Flat Bush 7 – schools to share knowledge and resources ■■By Farida Master

14-year-old journey with all the schools in Flat Bush being brand new. “The collaboration between the schools has existed for a long time so it was easy to have a day where all of us came together to share creative practices and a progressive educational pathway in the community,” he says. “There is no competition here. When we started we understood what we wanted in this area and we are all working towards that realisation.” He gives credit to Mary Wilson, former principal of Baverstock Oaks for encouraging collaboration in the fast developing area of Flat Bush. Veena Vohra, principal of Mission Heights Primary School, points out that Baverstock Oaks was the very first school which was part of the development of Flat Bush. “We have always been individual islands of excellence in each school with a lot of personal learning. So this is a great way for the staff to share the best practises and avail of the expertise we have in the community. “This also makes the transition from primary to senior

or the first time principals of seven different schools in Flat Bush came together along with around 250 teachers and 95 support staff to share their knowledge and resources. They met at Ormiston Junior College on Tuesday. Unlike most schools in a zone that are naturally competitive, Flat Bush 7 is an initiative focussed on collaboration to promote the local community of teachers, children and patents. Self-funded by principals of Mission Heights Junior College, Mission Heights Primary, Ormiston Senior College, Ormiston Junior College, Ormiston Primary School, Baverstock Oaks School and the still-to-open in 2019 Te Uho o te Nikau Primary School — there is no government funding involved. Instead, the local principals put aside money from their learning budgets to harness the power of collective intelligence and the diversity of thinking as they share their school narratives. Principal of Mission Heights Junior College Ian Morrison says that it has been a

college very easy for children and parents. We can even personally refer parents to go and see a particular person in another school.” The break out themes for the day were creative practice in schools, culturally responsive practice, student well being and building resilience, collaborative practice and curriculum connections, round table –strategic networking between schools. Guest speaker Kaila Col-

bin from the Ministry of Awesome spoke about `Riding the exponential wave of change’— what nanotechnology, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence and robotics have in common, and what do they have to do with us? The theme tied in well with future focussed schools that thrive on innovative learning. Heath McNeil, principal of Ormiston Primary, says there has been a history of a unique

partnership with each of the new schools being initially hosted in other Flat Bush schools until they were formally established. Luke Sumich, principal of Ormiston Junior College, says they are building on initiatives like a collective scholarship of $1000 for Year 13 students who have excelled. “It’s about creating trust,” says Diana Patience, principal of Ormiston Senior College. “We are the only area in NZ with two junior colleges and one senior college and we want to educate the community about this model by demonstrating that by working closely together we are providing a seamless and legitimate pathway for all children, which normally doesn’t happen.” “Genee Crowley, the newlyappointed principal of Baverstock Oaks School, says she feels privileged to be a part of a community of schools that supports and helps each other. Mel Bland, principal of Te Uho o te Nikau Primary School, agrees saying she feels very lucky to be a part of a community of experienced principals who are mentors with a shared vision.

Uncle Stan celebrates 101 years in style ■■By Therese Henkin It’s not every day you see a centenarian on a motorbike. But Stan Hilliam was made a promise by his doctor that if he reached 100 years of age, he would get to ride pillion on a motorcycle around the block. So at the grand old age of 101 Stan hopped on the back of his doctor’s motorbike with his family cheering him on. Stan’s niece Lynette Mitchell says it was a memorable moment the family will treasure forever. “A few years ago Uncle Stan was admiring [Dr Clarke’s] motorbike outside the Panmure Surgery and [Dr Clark] said he would make him a deal. If he made it to 100, he would take him for a ride,” she says. It was all set to go ahead last year on Stan’s 100th birthday when he suffered a fall which resulted in a broken hip. “So that was the end of that,” says Lynette. But a year later, even though he was now using a walker to get around,

Stan couldn’t see why, with his hip healed, he couldn’t still take Dr Clark up on his offer. The ride took place on Stan’s birthday, with family travelling from all over the world for a birthday celebration in Howick. If the motorcycle trip was anything to go by, Stan isn’t ready to slow down. He is a firm believer in striving to make the most out of life and is always seen helping others. His love of learning and the English language sees him spend a great deal of time studying the dictionary. He loves to go on outings and is the first to put his hand up for activities at his rest home in Ellerslie. He takes great pride in being the spokesperson for the residents in his wing at the monthly meetings. Lynette says Stan is in exceptionally good health for his age. “A nurse asked him if he still felt the same inside as he did when he was 21. His reply was ‘no, I had no brains then!’ ” she laughs.

residents along with a handful of police, locals and retailers were led by Ruth Davy, executive officer at the Gut Cancer Foundation, completing gut crunches to music add-

ing a bit of excitement to a regular day at the mall. The Gut Cancer Foundation is a dedicated charity working tirelessly to spread the word about gut can-

cer which is the most common and deadliest form of cancers in New Zealand. Nearly half of those diagnosed with gut cancer die within five years.

The #NationaCrunchDay campaign on Thursday was to create awareness and help fund on-going research, diagnosis and treatment to improve survival rates.

Mission Heights Junior College Year 9 Mountains Whanau students commemorated the 65th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary’s historic ascent of Everest by raising funds to help the people of Nepal. Students raised more than $1600 with bake sales, food stalls, games and a challenge to run 8848m (the height of Everest) in less than two hours. The funds will help the work of the Himalayan Trust, founded by Sir Edmund Hillary in the 1960s to improve life for the people who made his adventures in the Himalayas possible. Global Studies teacher Miriam Martin Ortega said: “The students have been learning about Sir Ed and his inspira-

tional achievements. One of the cornerstones of our school life is ‘leadership through service’, which is something Sir Ed demonstrated. “We are very proud to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the summit of Everest in this way and to know we are helping to improve lives in Nepal, one of the poorest countries in the world.” Prue Smith, general manager of the Himalayan Trust said: “The Himalayan Trust is so proud and honoured to see just how much work the Mission Heights Junior College students have put into this event. “To Sir Ed, his greatest achievement was not climbing to the summit of Everest, but helping

Four locals recognised on Queen’s Birthday Honours list and Linden May Johnson, a longtime volunteer of Howick, was also awarded a Queen’s Service Medal. “It is a massive honour and privilege especially when I feel like I still have so much to do in fact in the rainbow space,” Inspector Phillips told the Times. “I feel like I am just getting started. I have great support people and partners around me who must have supported the nomination so I feel a little embarrassed that I get the award when it is so much of a team

effort.” Meanwhile, Mrs Johnson said she has been involved as a volunteer in a number of different organisations and activities all her life. “I believe that growing up on a farm in a very small community on the West Coast taught me the value and benefits of working with other like-minded and sharing people to achieve a result unachievable without their help such as haymaking while the weather was fine. “I feel very honoured to have been

nominated for this award by wonderful caring people, many of whom have also been volunteers.” When the Times contacted Martine she was in Canada attending a conference of the World Blind Union. Speaking from Ottawa she said that she was very surprised when she first heard a month ago that she was honoured. “I feel really humbled. It’s so nice to know that while you are busy doing the work you are passionate about, someone has nominated you.

This is a huge acknowledgement and inspiration for me since there is so much more to be done for people with disability in terms of creating a better environment and transport in developing countries,” she says. “The only person I shared the good news with was my husband when I got a letter asking if I’d accept the Queen’s Service Medal and if all the details mentioned are correct. But now we will celebrate with the family once the announcement is made.”

Fox qualifies for US Open Championship

Flooding batters east Auckland M

uch of east Auckland is recovering after heavy rainfall and flooding battered Auckland over the weekend. The streets of Pakuranga turned into streams and several motorists who were trying to drive through heavy surface flooding became stranded. On Cascades Road water rose up to window level according to residents. Studfall Street in Pakuranga became so severely flooded that one man was seen rowing a small boat down the road. Residents in all parts of east Auckland experienced flooding with the worst affected areas being Half Moon Bay, Pakuranga and Highland Park. Basements and backyards were flooded and at least 20 homes in the area have suffered serious water damage. Fire and Emergency services said they responded to 50 call-outs in Howick alone on Sunday.

Beachlands’ Ryan Fox has added to his already successful weekend by qualifying for the 2018 US Open Championship at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club this week. With rounds of 65 and 71 at the open sectional qualifying at Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, England, Fox continued his form from the European Tour to secure a place in his fourth major championship which commences on June 13. After playing two Open Championships and one PGA Championship, this will be his first US Open as he looks to join fellow Kiwi and 2005 US Open champion, Michael Campbell in the history books. “Massively excited to qualify for my fourth major, I have never played the US Open before, so to get to play one in New York at Shinnecock at one of the most iconic US Open venues is going to be pretty special, I can’t wait,” said Fox. The unique thing about his qualification is that Campbell qualified for the US Open through the same sectional qualifying. The USGA-introduced European qualifying for the first time in 2005, which took place at the exact same destination, Walton Heath. The eventual US Open champion had to sink a six-foot birdie putt on the last hole of qualifying to secure his place in the US Open and the rest is history. Fox has enjoyed a great few weeks on the European Tour’s Rolex Series with his form continuing to go from strength to strength after finishing

T51 and T8 in the last two weeks, so he will have high hopes and a positive mindset entering one of the globes biggest events. “It’s been a pretty surreal four days really, obviously finishing with a top 10 initially with a great last round and doing a lot to secure my card for next year, then high-tail it back to London for 36 holes today,” said Fox. “It was certainly nice to continue the form from yesterday’s round into today and I’m just very happy and hopefully it can continue for another week or so entering the US Open.

OPINION

Alternatives to new taxes

MATTRESS

With Jami-Lee Ross

L

ast week, Auckland Council voted 13-7 to keep pressing forward in their attempt to impose a new regional fuel tax on Auckland. National has consistently opposed regional fuel taxes in Auckland since we repealed a previous attempt to impose them in 2009. The primary reason for this is because we believe that adding 11.5 cents to the price of fuel imposes an unnecessary burden on Auckland families. In Government, National didn’t need to impose new regional fuel taxes in order to fund transport. We managed to harness the dividends of a growing economy and apply sound fiscal discipline to transport investment which meant that projects could be funded without imposing new costs. That approach allowed us to fund projects such as the AMETI

Eastern Busway in partnership with Auckland Council without requiring new taxes on Aucklanders. This is a project that will provide huge benefits in connecting our community with a public transport corridor. We should not be attempting to erode the benefits we gain by raising taxes at the same time. So how would National fund key transport projects such as the AMETI Busway in Auckland without resorting to new taxes? The first place to start is to look at the ability of Auckland Council to find savings in its own budget. The regional fuel tax is projected to raise $150 million. For the Council to raise that, they would only need to find 4 per cent in savings from their budget. To put that in context, Mayor Goff promised to find between 3-6 per cent of savings when he was elected. If the Council could follow through with this promise,

Jami-Lee’s JOTTINGS

a regional fuel tax would not be needed. National was also able to fund a record $32 billion infrastructure package in Budget 2017 because of the growing economy. That package would have allowed us to continue putting large investment into public transport and into key roading projects like AMETI, the East-West Link and Mill Road. This all goes to show that regional fuel taxes are not needed. They will impose a large economic cost on the regions in which they are imposed and there are other ways to ensure projects get completed without resorting to new taxes. ➤ Jami-Lee Ross, MP for Botany

COMMUNITY

Maintenance and project delays frustrate board members ■ BY THERESE HENKIN Some local board members are fed up as community maintenance and funded projects continue to fall by the wayside. Long standing board member Adele White says Auckland Council and Auckland Transport are letting the community down as continued delays to community projects frustrate residents. She says simple things are not getting done and enough is enough. “The people of Howick have massive pride in their town. They pay substantial rates and they quite fairly seek a decent standard,” White says. “There has been a broken bench seat sitting in the middle of Howick Village for months now. There is nowhere for bus users to shelter outside the Good Home because the bus shelter was destroyed by a bus months ago.” She says the list of small things that haven’t been done goes on. She is also disappointed at the constant delays the board is experiencing with the completion of

funded projects. “We have been waiting for a chess table to be installed in Fencible Walk for nearly two years now and the turnaround for the buses at the Half Moon Bay Ferry Terminal was supposed to be opened in December last year.” James Ireland, an AT spokesperson, says Auckland Transport has discussed nine different possible local board funded projects this term. “The Howick Local Board has proceeded with investigation of three, all of which followed the expected timeframes,” he says. “The bus shelter on Picton Street was knocked down around 14 months ago. It has not been replaced because the footpath is very narrow in that area and fitting the shelter on the foot path in a way that does not obstruct the Good Home’s windows and access is difficult.” Ireland says the Howick Local Board is working on a Howick Village Centre Plan that will remove some parking and may provide a wide enough footpath for a new bus shelter.

“It would not be financially sensible to install a new shelter anywhere until details of this plan are confirmed by the Howick Local Board.” With regard to the bus turnaround, Ireland says the project has taken much longer than expected due to delays in contract negotiations and AT have apologised to the board for the delay. The project is due to be finished next month. Auckland Council community facilities general manager Rod Sheridan says overall the Howick Local Board’s project delivery programme is currently one of the five highest achievers across all local boards. He says is based on the projected forecast for completion and indicates that progress with delivering the Howick Local Board programme is on track. “There will always be projects which are delayed for a range of reasons and the delivery team is focussing on getting these resolved. Fencible walk is one of these projects,” Sheridan says.

Local Board member Garry Boles says the last 12 months with Auckland Council have been an ongoing challenge. “The last 12 months have become a constant battle, with multiple complaints from the community arriving daily – many of these regarding the condition of our parks and walkways, and several asking when storm damage from January will be repaired. We advise residents to follow the recommended procedure for the quickest response by calling the Auckland Council Call Centre.” “Weeks later board members

are being called back by the complainants saying they have had no contact from council and their issues have not been resolved,” says Boles. Boles, who oversees the parks and recreation portfolio, says he regularly receives emails from members of the public telling him “what he should be doing.” “I can assure you that when we receive complaints, these are immediately directed to the council staff responsible. In response they reassure us the problem will be addressed.” Auckland Council community facilities general manager Rod Sheridan says the unprecedented nature of April’s storm

and the continued heavy rainfall is responsible for the state of the parks and reserves. He says the initial response to the storm was to make sites safe for public use. For a full week following the storm, arborists worked around the clock, he says. “The volume is immense and has stretched capacity in many areas, resulting in delays to other core maintenance work. However, we are working through the backlog and expect to be on top of it in the coming weeks.” He says calling the Auckland Council contact centre is the best avenue for getting these issues resolved.

This, combined with a genuine passion and commitment to exceptional customer service, means your Travel Associates consultants will tailor-make a holiday perfectly suited to you. Travel Associates have nine other locations around New Zealand as well as 42 stores across Australia. It was established in 1998 as part of Flight Centre, providing a boutique travel agency with a total focus on uncompromising customer service and premium travel offering unique experiences and the ultimate in luxury travel. Cruiseabout Howick has been offering cruise expertise in the same spacious office for the past five years and Travel Associates Manager and Cruise Specialist, Michelle Sutton, has been there from the beginning. As a Cruise Specialist, she is joined by Natasha Warfield from the Parnell Cruiseabout. Both have CLIA [Cruiseline International Association] accreditation, love all forms of cruising and take the matching of the right cruise for each customer and making sure they get the most out of that cruise, very seriously. The other two members of the friendly team, Jo-Anne Wright and Cheryl Dunleavy have more than eight years each as Travel Managers with extensive personal travel and are experts in building tailor made holidays and flights.

Manager and Cruise Specialist Michelle Sutton says, “We are a very friendly team with a huge amount of travel experience. We are specialists that cater to niche markets and provide competitive airfares, special interest tours, Luxury Ocean and river cruises, rail journeys etc with the benefit of our knowledge and Flight Centre backing. “Our experienced consultants have done a lot of travelling themselves which is why it is easy for them to tailor individual holidays to suit each client.” Personal Travel Manager Jo-Anne Wright who looks after corporate travel says that they often give cli-

ents more than what they come for, at a better price. A former flight attendant, Jo-Anne has travelled the world and says it is her passion to keep clients excited about where they are going and what they are doing when on holiday. “We are highly skilled and use all resources we have to give them the best holiday, whether they are travelling for a conference or are on a romantic getaway or just want to travel with a girlfriend.” Adding a special touch to her clients’ holiday is something Personal Travel Manager Cheryl Dunleavy enjoys. “I could surprise them with

a cake or a bottle of champagne in their hotel room or with something at the airport or on the aircraft on their special day,” she says. Cheryl makes it a point to go to the airport when a group she has booked is checking in. “We care very much for our clientele and they feel secure that we take the stress away from travelling,” says Cheryl. “So many people don’t check their passport expiry or forget they need a visa for certain places. We are on call and all our contact details are with our clients. In case of an emergency all they need is to get in touch with us.”

Wherever the tide takes you

Personal Travel Manager and Cruise Specialist Natasha Warfield, who is a travel buff and has travelled 29 countries, says that she loves getting immersed in different cultures and sharing her personal travel experiences with her clients. “Since the last 10 years we, as a family, prefer to go on cruise. It is our preferred way of travel. On a cruise you don’t feel rushed. Your food, entertainment, travel is all pre paid and you know what is available at every port. “You unpack only once and wake up to a different destination every day which gives you a snapshot of what the place is going to be like and ... it gives you a chance to decide on the place of holiday for your next vacation. “As Kiwis we want to get out there and see the world and we are here to give people different travel experiences.” Manager and Master CLIA Accredited Cruise Consultant Michelle Sutton especially enjoys providing exceptional and friendly customer service. She loves the local community feel in Howick and has seen Cruiseabout build a very loyal customer base that she is determined to continue to grow and look after. The Travel Associates slogan is ‘Our Experience Counts’ and the team at Sutton and Turner certainly have the passion, knowledge and experience to really live up to this. End of an era for Pakuranga Madrigal Choir

fter 43 years together, The Pakuranga Madrigal Choir is coming to an end. They are disbanding and will embark on their own journey’s following the announcement of choir lead Neil Guyan’s retirement. After a series of health complications, Neil has had to give up the role he adores, marking the end of an era for the choir. Over the years, the choir has shown resilience in the face of adversity, with Neil guiding them through threats to the funding and housing of the choir over the years. The journey started in 1969 when Neil, who at the time was Pakuranga College’s head of music, established the school’s madrigal choir for those who enjoyed choral pursuits. The choir was prolific and went on to win many awards. However, after leaving school, some of the students who belonged to the choir craved the opportunity to sing again. So in 1972 Neil decided to establish the madrigal choir

for adults which was originally called the Pakuranga College Evening Class Madrigal Choir. Vicky Stone, who has been a choir member since its inception, says Neil was the soul of music in Howick. “He has had a huge impact on musicians and singers in this area over the years and has taught so many students who have gone on to reach incredible heights in their music,” she says. She has fond memories of Neil’s enthusiasm inspiring a sense of passion and drive in everyone he taught. Vicky says the choir has been in recess for almost a year awaiting Neil’s decision on whether

he could continue to lead the choir following his health complications. “His retirement has left a huge gap in the music scene here in Howick and I just don’t think anyone would have been able to take his place leading the choir.” But while ill-health may have slowed him down, the 72-yearold will never lose his love of music. Despite his limited eyesight stopping him from reading music, he is still seen playing piano and organ from memory at All Saints Church. “We all have such fond memories of Neil and the choir, we will miss him.”

This album was Nathan’s fist gold selling album in New Zealand and went onto produce a whole new generation of musicians and producers and to change the local musical landscape. The show will draw on past albums from his extensive back catalog plus some brand new material and is a show of an artist at his creative peak playing music from the heart.”

New Zealand born musician Nathan Haines is heading to Uxbridge this month. The vocalist and saxophonist will take the stage against all odds for a special concert on June 16 after a throat cancer diagnosis last year left him unsure if he would ever play again. He will be joined by his brother Joel Haines on guitar, Alan Brown on Hammond organ and keyboards, with his regular stellar rhythm section of Mickey Ututaonga on drums with Karika Turua on bass providing a solid, grooving foundation. “I’m very excited to be back and to be able to play again” says Nathan. “I’ve been through hell and back again since I was admitted to hospital for life saving surgery on boxing day 2017. I’ve had to rethink a few things and try and rebuild myself physically, but music for me is a healing force in the universe and as such it will give me the energy I need to play alongside my brother and close friends”. An evening with Marjan ‘M

arjan is a beautiful story teller who transports you when she sings’ are some of the rave reviews she has got. “When she tackled the lovely jazz standard ‘Detour Ahead’ (Ellis/Frigo) she owned it completely. That hint of smokey voice, that delicate phrasing; being adventurous while showing deep respect to the composition”, says another review. Now the versatile entertainer is heading to Uxbridge on Saturday June 9. Marjan has spent virtually her whole life as a performer. Her resume includes acting in numerous feature and short films including ‘6 Days’, which has its world premiere in 2017. She is equally talented as a vocalist and songwriter having performed at such diverse events as Auckland Jazz Fes-

tival, Tauranga Jazz Festival, Creative Jazz club Aotearoa, Christmas in the Park, Jazz & Blues Club, and numerous performances at Music in the Parks and the Cornwall Park Series. Marjan features on pianist Kevin Field’s The A List album, a finalist in the New Zealand Music Awards 2016, and has collaborated, performed and recorded with some of the best musicians in the country. Of Persian descent, Marjan has drawn inspiration for her creativity from a wide range of sources – including the music and traditions from her indigenous culture along with the western musical styles of jazz, pop and R&B, particularly the artistry of Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. She is in demand as a voiceover artist in the advertising and corporate world.

Watch out – Paxsters about On Monday, 21 May, I attended a medical appointment at the former Greenlane Hospital. After surviving the journey, (three buses to get there and three buses to get home) I found myself staring down the barrel of an oncoming NZ Post Paxster. These NZ Post Delivery vehicles take up the entire width of the footpath. Initially I thought they would slow down and stop until we could negotiate our path past one another carefully and safely. Oh, how wrong was I! The Paxster did not slow, did not stop but definitely was going to continue to go, even if it was through me. I stepped aside onto

the wet muddy grass bank and fortunately avoided being run over. After contacting NZ Post on several occasions, the only response has been from their call centre to say the person responsible for delivery services had been unable to contact me for a whole week. This unfortunately means the

More mums wanted for study

Further to your article (Times, May 31) we were witness to the incident outside the car park at Highland Park. The restraint showed by the police was commendable. The young man and his band of friends were a total disappointment and their lack of respect during and after the arrest was, to say the least, disgusting. I am amazed that Mr Garnett has the audacity to criticise the police for his son’s behaviour. They showed great restraint under provocation from a gang of youths. Advice? change your son’s attitude and the future may be better for him and his gang of friends. Paul Rayner

I am looking to enrol local pregnant mums into research study ran by the University of Auckland. I’m a research midwife based at the Liggins Institute at Auckland University. We are currently undertaking a huge research project in the impact on the current diabetes thresholds in NZ on women and children’s health. We currently are approaching 3000 recruited mums across Auckland, and hoping to achieve numbers over 4000 in order to provide accurate findings to assist in the provision of effective health care for future generations.

Boys’ behaviour was disgusting

PaxsterCam footage has been overwritten. How convenient for NZ Post! If incidents like this are being ignored by NZ Post, it will only be a matter of time before a pedestrian is badly injured by one of these vehicles. I find it hard to believe this one was being operated within Safe Operation Procedures and, if it was, then this needs to be changed at the pace the Paxster was being operated at! Please warn all your readers to be wary and alert around these Paxster vehicles for their own safety. Michael Phillips Howick We are hoping to improve our profile in the eastern suburbs, and so increase recruitment from this area. Please do not hesitate to contact me at c.overfield@auckland.ac.nz. Get rid of him The partner of the woman who sold her daughter for sex was arrested at the airport trying to flee to India. Why did the police not carry his bags to the plane and send him on his way? Surely we would be better off without him. So now we have to pay to house him in prison for four years, when our lock-up facilities are overflowing. Australia sends their wrong-doing NZ citizens back home. Why can’t we do the same and we probably would

Reader Barry Wood is worried that people are harvesting shellfish after heavy rain. In this shot of his you can just make out toilet paper under the manhole cover. Photo supplied

Not good for your health How do we educate our new settlers that it is not advisable to collect shellfish for three or four days after heavy rain? On Sunday morning (June 3) three sewer manholes overflowed onto Cockle Bay. Later that day, the beach was busy with people collecting cockles. not have to spend millions building new prisons? Bob Wichman, Botany

We just want our pictures back To the person who broke into my basement last week, or his parents or friends or employer (because one of you will know who I am writing about). What you stole was of little commercial value, and by now you will

I spent some time trying to warn and educate the collectors of the pollution but due to language problems, most could not understand. I advised Auckland Council of the problem so we will see what their response is. Barry Wood , Cockle Bay have discovered that the two hard drives were both quite old, and they have only a limited life. More importantly, you will have discovered that the contents of each were almost identical and that they contained photographs that go back just on 100 years. They are irreplaceable, but mean nothing to anybody but my family. You know the address of the house you broke into, so I am asking you to just put them in my letter box. Auckland Council pushes for online voting trial

Education

Duo good for a laugh ■■By Farida Master

C

omedy is hard work say Howick College students Josh Black and Catherine Thomas who recently performed at the NZ International Comedy Fest. Fourteen-year-old Josh along with 16-year-old Catherine Thomas auditioned for an impromptu stand-up hosted by Class Comedians 2018, a group of comedians who visited the college. The scholarship drama students didn’t realise there was an ongoing selection process and were pleasantly surprised when they were told that they had won themselves a place in a 50- hour free workshop with some of the best internationally-known comedians. “Though both of us are drama students, doing stand-up is far more terrifying,” says Catherine. “In a play you are hiding behind a character but here you are on your own. Though once the audience starts laughing at your first joke then it gets easier. “The best thing in life is to make people laugh and though comedy was never on my radar, I’ve discovered that I love doing stand-up and I want to keep doing it,” she says. They also learnt that there are different genres of comedy that range from story- telling to observation, one liners, comedic theatre, musical comedy and lots more. “We didn’t realise there is so much theory work involved,” they say. Josh says the trick is to write a joke

and keep working on it until it sounds better. “The first time I auditioned, I spoke about the annoying habit my parents have of talking loudly on the phone,” he says. “You can tell a real story and add some drama to it. Or then look at things in your life that you’ve had a wee giggle at and then develop characters. “Like for instance I have a friend who is quite weird so I use him as a character and keep adding things that he may or may not have done,” says Josh, who has always enjoyed theatre sports. “You have to keep going over and

over your one-liners and use them on your friends and see which one works the best.” At the Comedy Fest, Josh spoke about the time he broke his leg on a playground while on a date with a girl. Catherine, who enjoys a political slant, told the story of her being a hockey umpire but has no control over the men who are much older and don’t respect her. Now that the duo have had a taste of stand up comedy they have been doing more Open Mic nights, and both agree that it been rewarding and has made them more positive as they look at the funnier side of life.

Auckland Council’s Governing Body has given its in-principle support for conducting an online voting trial in the 2019 local government elections. At a meeting last month, the Governing Body approved the council’s submission on the Local Electoral Matters Bill. The submission supports amendments to the Local Electoral Act 2001 to increase democratic participation and enable trials on alternative voting methods, such as online voting. With the Bill currently before the Justice Select Committee, the Governing Body gave its in-principle support to running an online voting trial among a small subset of voters in the next local government election, subject to a number of conditions being met. These conditions include enabling legislation being passed in time to allow an online voting system to be implemented for 2019, online security risks being managed appropriately, confirmation of an acceptable level of costs, and final Governing Body approval before any trial goes ahead. Mayor Phil Goff says it’s inevitable that online voting is the future and if we continue to

rely only on the postal system we risk losing a whole generation of voters who experience the world online. “We need to adapt to changing circumstances with how people participate in democracy, access information and communicate. There is strong support for online voting with 74 per cent of Aucklanders telling us after the 2016 election that they would prefer to vote online. “It won’t solve all of the problems of low voter turnout at local elections but we should be looking to facilitate a 21st century way of voting that is more accessible for our growing and diverse communities. “Online voting could work as effectively here as it does overseas but it is sensible to trial it first rather than jump in and do it across the board” says Mayor Goff. Auckland Council will now investigate if a trial is feasible. It will explore joining with other councils to run one trial together, run a request for proposal process to engage a preferred vendor and establish a timetable and budget. If a trial is deemed feasible a formal proposal will be presented to the Governing Body for final approval.

Apprehensive all blacks With so many players missing so much rugby because of injuries or suspension, the All Blacks have cause to be apprehensive heading into their first test against unpredictable France at Eden Park on Saturday. However there will be relief that Sam Whitelock, Ryan Crotty and Sam Cane have been cleared to play with Whitelock taking over the captaincy from Kieran Read who is still recuperating from back surgery. Unfortunately he won’t have Brodie Retallick as his locking partner after the Chiefs’ ironman suffered pectoral damage in his team’s 34-20 loss to the Crusaders. Having gone through no fewer than 70 players since the start of last season, France finished fourth in the Six Nations with two wins, the most satisfying being a 22-16 triumph against England. They beat Italy 34-17, lost to Scotland 32-25 but went very close against Wales and champions Ireland, losing 14-13 and 15-13 respectively. With Morgan Parra, Yoann Maestri, Maxime Médard and brilliant midfield back Wesley Fofana all returning from injury, they will be that much stronger. While question marks hover around the lack of match play experienced by the All Blacks forwards, their backs remain a classy act despite the withdrawal of Sonny Bill Williams with a knee injury. In Crotty, Anton Lienert-Brown, Ngani Laumape and Jack Goodhue they are blessed with plenty of midfield depth outside brilliant halves Aaron Smith and Beauden Barrett.

Named International Player of the Year over the past two seasons, Barrett is not making the dazzling breaks he once did and is not coping with the rushed defence as well as Crusader Richie Mo’unga who has outplayed him and the Chiefs’ Damian McKenzie in recent games. A cool, calm tactician in the mould of Dan Carter, Mo’unga reads the game beautifully and showed against the Chiefs he possesses a snappy side-step that can elude the best defenders. However Barrett remains an exceptional talent and will probably remain the national selectors’ first choice first-five for some time to come. Nevertheless with Mo’unga and McKenzie challenging, he knows he can’t rest on his laurels. Last year the selectors favoured the Williams/Crotty midfield combination once Williams recovered from the Achilles injury he suffered at the 2016 Rio Olympics and he rewarded them with a particularly good game against Wales at Cardiff. However the hard-running Laumape was the outstanding

second-five of the Super Rugby championship, scoring 15 tries, and the ever-reliable Crotty remains a better second-five than he is a centre where Lienert-Brown’s clever ball distribution has set up so many tries. With the back three of Ben Smith,

Rieko Ioane and Waisake Naholo in sharp form, the All Blacks will seek to move the ball wide if conditions allow. However with Joe Moody, Owen Franks, Sam Whitelock, Sam Cane and Liam Squire all short of match play, the French will fancy their

chances of dominating the All Backs pack. As a consequence, coach Steve Hansen could ring the changes off the reserves bench earlier than usual. ➤➤Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author
