A kind and sensitive soul, caring friend, devoted teacher, devout vegan and an animal lover were some of the tributes paid to Year 2 teacher of Wakaaranga School Izaac Michael John Black who died suddenly on February 19. At a beautiful Memorial Service held at Wakaaranga School on Friday afternoon, family, friends, colleagues, former teachers and former class mates spoke about how he was always there for them. “When I was going through a particularly dark phase in my life, he made sure he was around, helping me. He took me to a boxing ring and asked me to let off all my frustrations,” said one of his friends who described himself as part of a nerdy group that played

Touching tributes about the 26-year-old teacher being quirky, fun loving and a passionate animal rights activist-but most of all a caring human being, flowed at the gathering that celebrated his life. Izaac loved his hats and enjoyed wearing them. But he loved his sister’s pug more. “You shall always live in our hearts. You have taken a part of me with you,” said a friend. Izaac’s favourite song David Bowie’s Star Man was played at the memorial service, while a group of teachers got together to sing Bruno Mars’ ‘You can count on me like one two three’ which captured the essence of the muchloved teacher. Teen hit by bus A 16-year-old male sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Middlemore Hospital after he was hit by a bus. The incident took place at the intersection of Ti Rakau Dr and Chapel Rd around 3.30pm on Monday. The teenager is still in hospital in a stable condition according to a spokesperson from Middlemore Hospital. The hospital is unable to disclose what injuries the boy sustained. A police spokesperson says that initial enquiries suggest there is likely to be no charges laid in relation to this matter. Principal of Botany Downs secondary College Karen Brisden says: “The boy was admitted to Middlemore Hospital where he is being treated for his injuries. “His father has shared with us that he will be okay all things considered. “We continue to encourage our students to be aware of their surroundings and to follow the rules of the road at all times.”

Teachers swap ideas on making maths more fun ■■By Farida Master
M
any teachers fear being critiqued by their peers, and may not be open to their ideas being challenged, but Subash Chandar K, curriculum leader of maths at Ormiston Senior College believes that hosting a free, professional learning workshop for maths teachers in Auckland would be a perfect springboard for the introduction of technology in the subject. Around 70 teachers from 38 Auckland schools turned up for an inaugural maths day hosted recently at the college. The award-winning maths teacher felt that opening the doors of the college to maths teachers from other schools including Botany Downs Secondary College, Sancta Maria College, Mission Heights Junior College and Howick College, would also give them an opportunity to demonstrate leadership qualities as well showcase the work that the maths department at the senior college is involved in. “It was wonderful to see the teachers connect at the beginning of the year at our college.
Maths teachers from 38 schools learn how to make maths more interesting for students at the inaugural Maths Day workshop at Ormiston Senior College. Photo supplied
The workshops inspired teachers at the start of the school year,” says Mr Chandar K, winner of the Jim Campbell award, Kalman award and the Earnest Dunkan award. “A lot of teachers may wonder if they are going to get replaced by technology so it was interesting to have our department conduct workshops on how technology can enhance the learning in classrooms,” he says. Four different workshops
were ...Two-time Ernest Duncan award-winning maths teacher Elizabeth Sneddon led workshops on Personalised Learning in Mathematics and Statistics; Mrs Wiaam Al-Salihi on Teacher Desmos (that creates tasks and makes assessments easier for teachers —as they can see up to 30 screens at one go). Maths teacher Vimal Singh spoke about learning with Sphero robots while Kathryn Alberton conducted workshops on Technology in the
Classroom. “ With a shortage of maths teachers who are either retiring or leaving because they can’t afford to live in Auckland, this was a great platform for maths teachers to network, swap ideas and get excited about what they do, says Chandar K. “When teachers share, they learn more and invest more time in figuring out the problems when their ideas are challenged. That way they come up with better solutions.”

Foodstuffs North Island Ltd has bought Highland Park Shopping Centre, with a view to eventually bringing a new shopping option to the high growth east Auckland area. The centre will be redeveloped over time, Foodstuffs said in a media statement. The redevelopment will be designed to accommodate existing retailers and to ultimately include a Pak’nSave supermarket. The co-operative believes the proposed redevelopment will offer locals the opportunity to enjoy New Zealand’s lowest food prices. The current owners, Highland Centre Ltd, have owned the Highland Park Shopping Centre for 20 years. Over this time, they have come to know many of their tenants personally and, as such, the decision to sell was given a great deal of thought, the media release said. “After all these years, we are pleased to be able to sell to a 100 per cent New Zealand-owned company which is committed to providing a valuable service to the Highland Park and wider east Auckland community,” said Mark Townsend, director, Highland Centre Limited. Lindsay Rowles, Foodstuffs North Island general manager, property development said the purchase is an exciting milestone for the co-operative. “While we are still very much in the planning and evaluation stage, we are considering adding a Pak’nSave to the Highland Park and wider Eastern Bays area, which ultimately means we are able to offer customers more choice,” said Rowles. “The details are still to be worked through. Our focus right now is on working with the existing tenants to ensure they have all the information they need as the redevelopment begins to take shape.” The rights and interests of existing tenants will be taken into account, including the Countdown supermarket in the Centre which is not directly affected by the current redevelopment proposal. Colliers has been appointed by Foodstuffs North Island as the managing agent for the Highland Park Shopping Centre. They are handling the process on behalf of Foodstuffs and are responsible for all property, facilities and marketing management associated with the site. “We know the news that Foodstuffs has purchased the Shopping Centre could mean uncertainty for its current tenants, and we are very mindful of this”, said Rowles. “The Foodstuffs team wants all tenants, some of whom have been here for many years, to feel supported and, with Colliers, are endeavouring to make this process as seamless as possible.” A letter from Colliers to tenants seen by the Times said Colliers is now the first point of contact. Settlement is set to occur on June 30. Foodstuffs is working through redevelopment schemes but its intention is to completely redevelop that part of the centre comprising the specialty shops, the letter said. It does not currently intend to redevelop the standalone building fronting Pakuraga Road at the Pakuranga Road access points. Foodstuffs will be entering discussions with Countdown in relation to any potential redevelopment or refurbishment of the Countdown supermarket. Colliers will be writing to individual tenants as soon as it has further details of the proposed redevelopment and the likely impact of on respective tenancies.

Retirement village lift a ‘danger’ to residents ■ BY THERESE HENKIN
R
esidents of a local retirement village are frustrated as their demands to replace a dangerous elevator fall on deaf ears. The 19-year-old lift at Metlifecare Pakuranga Village regularly breaks down and elderly residents often find themselves trapped inside. Angela Scott, whose mother moved into the Pakuranga Village eight years ago, says the residents deserve better. “The lift is always being repaired for one reason or another and it’s just not good enough,” she says. “On one occasion that I know of, a 90-year-old lady got stuck and had a panic attack in the lift. “She is an asthmatic and didn’t have her puffer with her as she only went down to check her letter box. She was short of breath when they got to her and needed her puffer.” When the lift is out of action, the only other way of getting to and from the upstairs apartments is two flights of stairs. “The stairs are completely exposed to the elements, so the hand rails get slippery when it rains and the steps and

landings pool with water which is so dangerous,” Scott says. Scott says her 76-year-old mother is still receiving ongoing treatment for injuries she sustained when she fell down the village stairs in 2012. She says the “final straw” was receiving a distressed call from her mother when she became stuck in the lift once again earlier this year. In the nine days following this incident, the lift broke down four more times. Scott says in the most recent lift breakdown during the thunderstorm on February 10, the repairman from Otis Elevator Company deemed the lift too dangerous to fix at the time due to water going down the lift shaft. “[Metlifecare] pour so much
money into the new villages, which have brand new indoor elevators, while this lift is too dangerous to even repair when it’s raining,” Scott says. Scott was told by WorkSafe NZ that the Pakuranga village is deemed independent living quarters meaning residents should be able to get themselves around without assistance from a caregiver. According to WorkSafe, the lift can’t be labelled as mandatory operational access when the stairs are a viable alternative for what’s classified as independent residents. WorkSafe says it will oversee the way Metlifecare manage the risk of slips and falls. It has been suggested that residents who struggle with
the stairs move to a ground floor apartment, but Scott says this is an expensive venture. “They will get back what they put into the unit less 30 per cent, then they have to purchase the ground floor unit at current value,” Scott says. “My mum purchased hers eight years ago for $270,000. They are now selling for around $500,000.” Richard Callander, general manager operations for Metlifecare Pakuranga, says the safety and well-being of all residents and staff is a top priority. “We have undertaken an assessment of the lift by WorkSafe who, in discussions with our lift maintenance operators Otis, declared the lift to be operationally safe,” Callander says. “The lift has been regularly maintained over the years with any repairs carried out as speedily as possible.” He says the village has recently appointed an independent lift consultant to review the lift and provide a recommendation on its operation. “We are absolutely committed to the safety of all residents and the ongoing continued maintenance and safety of the village.”
A new National leadership
On Tuesday, the With National Party elected Simon Bridges as our Jami-Lee new leader and reRoss elected Paula Bennett as deputy leader. As the Party’s Chief Whip, it was my job to run the election process on the day. We had five candidates who ran for leadership with each making a strong case for how we can build on our current strengths as we head towards 2020. Our Party was able to have a widespread discussion about how we best act to hold this government to account and come up with policies that will help Kiwi families to succeed. This showed just how strong the depth of talent in our Caucus is and how energised our Party is to keep pushing for ideas to make New Zealand a better place to live, work and raise a family. Our Caucus voted and elected Simon Bridges as leader and I am excited about what the future holds for our party and for New Zealand. Simon will do a very good job. Our focus now is simple; we need to work together as a Caucus and Party to come up with ideas to improve the lives of New Zealanders. Sometimes this will look like us proposing new ideas and working with people to help put them in place and sometimes this will mean we have to oppose government policies that will take us backwards. That goal is something that united our Caucus under our new leadership team. I want to thank the other candidates for putting their name forward and adding their voices to this process. I also want to thank Bill English for his incredible twenty seven years as a Member of Parliament, National Party Leader and Prime Minister. Our Party would not be in as strong a position without Bill’s leadership. We are energised and ambitious for New Zealand and we are ready to put forward our case for a better New Zealand. The golf course will be closed to golfers on the day but open to the community for a day of family fun. Amongst a host of activities to keep everyone happy, there is also a fantastic opportunity to win a new car. The club’s secretary/manager Annette Smart said there’ll be something going on for all the family. “We are opening the course to the local community to come up and have a fun time,” she said. “There will be some activities with have-a-go golf. “We want to encourage the people of Howick to think seriously about their health. Golf is a fantastic way to nurture your health, as well as your wellbeing. “It’s a great way to keep fit, walking in stunning surroundings, enjoying the views and fresh air, as well as the company of your fellow golfers.” Families can expect fun activi-

to make sure we’re focusing on all aspects – that holistic approach.” He’s now spent 20 years in education and it’s hard to imagine this man doing anything else – but he hadn’t always planned on teaching. After graduating from university he worked for Telecom in New Zealand and in the finance department of NBC Television in London before deciding to head to teachers college in his late 20s. “And the rest is history,” he smiles. “It’s the best thing I ever did.” “Schools are awesome places to work. Kids are just...you get so much energy from them and there’s always something interesting happening. “You can come into work on a wet, cold, rainy Tuesday in winter and then the first interaction you have with a student just brightens your day.”

teve Hargreaves has big shoes to fill. His predecessor, Byron Bentley, spent 18 years at the helm of Macleans College before retiring at the end of last year. To follow on from that is “a little bit daunting” says Mr Hargreaves. “Byron’s so widely respected and he’s lead incredibly well for a long period of time. He’s the sort of person the Minister [of Education] would call and seek an opinion from.” While he’s new to the principal’s seat, he’ll be well familiar with the rest of the school — he spent 13 years there as a maths and economics teacher and a period in senior management before taking up the role of principal at Wesley College in 2015. He says it wasn’t easy to leave Wesley, where he felt he had settled in and was making progress. “It’s the kind of school where you really become a part of the place and the kids there are so open and interesting that you just become part of the family...leaving was really hard. “Last week when they came up to our [Macleans] assembly here and did a powhiri handover, I got quite choked up.” But he’s looking forward to being closer to his family again. “I was driving 40km down the road to Pukekohe every day, I never saw my kids. The Fire Brigade will also be there with one of their vehicles, and St John will be there too. “We are having a hole-in-one to win a car to cause a bit of excitement – there are terms and conditions (Ts & Cs) around this obviously,” said Smart. The vehicle is a 2018 Toyota Yaris valued at more than $27,000. “The Ts & Cs will be put on our website and will explain more about the rules around the holein- one competition,” she said. “It’s limited to a single hit by 105 people so book your turn in person on the day.” The club is hoping to make the Community Fun Day an annual event. ➤➤Watch www.howickgolf.co.nz for updates.

The garden where the unfortunate cat’s remains were left. Photo supplied
What happened to respect? We are writing this open letter in the hope it may help someone find what is left of their lost cat, and thank the wonderful neighbours who scooped up the body and dumped it on our drive. About 10 nights ago (around January 30) we had a knock at the door at dinner time. A distressed lady had hit and killed a ginger tabby cat on Whitford Road. She asked if it was our cat. We do not have cats and could offer no suggestion as to owners, although we had seen it on our property a couple of times. Then on Wednesday, February 7, I noticed a smell when walking down our drive. Someone had kindly scooped up the decaying cat remains from wherever they were and put them in a green plastic plant pot to carry the dead animal then tipped the cat’s body next to our raised flowerbed on the front drive. The somewhat sticky plant pot was left besides the body together with an expired registration tag (Honda Odyssey). The really sad thing for us is we moved up from rural Wellington
into Whitford some 2½ years ago and into a neighbourhood where clearly very few people have any time or respect for one another. About one year ago, whilst we were out, a neighbour (who has never introduced themselves either before or after the event) drove a dying sheep into our property and shut the gate telling our then 15-year-old boy it ‘was our problem now’. The sheep had terminal fly strike and died within 24 hours but not before it infected our stock. We also had a carcass to dispose of. Is it the way of Whitford to welcome new members of the community with gifts of dead and dying animals? What happened to respect and community spirit? The Bigley family Whitford Road
Well done Grangers, Basalt Really pleased to see our local restaurant and bar Grangers taking the lead in doing away with plastic drinking straws - and now I see that another Howick favourite, Basalt, have done likewise! I hope this initiative will inspire other local bars and restaurants to do likewise and reduce unnecessary plastic from entering our precious marine environment. Thanks to the management who’ve taken the lead. I will continue to support these restaurants and hope that other local establishments follow suit. Linda Robinson Half Moon Bay
COMMUNITY
Churches in the east celebrating unity T
he East Auckland Ministers’ Association kicked off 2018 with a new name, a new programme and a new chairperson, but with the same desire to serve the east Auckland community. Newly appointed chairperson Pastor Peter Morton unveiled the new name at the East Auckland Ministers’ Association’s 2018 launch event with around 50 local ministers in attendance. “We wanted our name to reflect the breadth of church involvement stretching from Pakuranga to Flat Bush across nearly 70 congregations, all doing great work and making a difference in their communities.” The breakfast event was hosted by Willow Park Christian Camp in Eastern Beach, a site familiar to many who have enjoyed the Camp’s hospitality and stunning beachside location at school and church camps as well as in using its convention centre facilities. Pastor Luke Brough shared learnings gleaned from the last 30 plus years as Senior Pastor to Elim Christian Centre in Botany Road. Pastor Brough described the early years meeting in Howick Intermediate School, then establishing its Botany Road presence on the edge of what was then a rural location on the edge of Howick, through to its multi-site presence as a church, school and ministry college in 2018. When asked what his secret to success and longevity in the role was Pastor Brough responded, “It’s

all about staying true to the vision of what you’re doing. But don’t take yourself too seriously. Find balance. Go fishing!” The Ministers’ Association will continue its monthly gatherings in 2018 with a refreshed programme including a range of speakers from across church and community. Pastor Morton believes it’s important for local church ministers to develop strong relationships to provide a foundation for serving the community together. “It’s important to us as churches that we’re really getting involved and making a great contribution into our community. So in addition to bringing pastors and ministers together, we’re also looking to hear from and work alongside local leaders in edu-
cation, government, medicine and social services.” The association will also continue running a sunrise service on Easter Sunday (April 1) on Stockade Hill which is a meaningful experience for many across the community. Ministers from the association will also continue to support the Anzac services run on Stockade Hill which have become very popular with the east Auckland community in recent years. Any ministers in the east Auckland area looking to connect with the association are welcome to contact the association by email at eaministers@gmail.com. The next meeting of the association is on Thursday March 22, 8:30am-9:30am at The River Christian Church.

THEATRE
Roots at Uxbridge REVIEW ROOTS
➤ Written by: Oliver Chong ➤ Directed by: Chye-Ling Huang ➤ Performed by: Amanda Grace-Leo ➤ Reviewed by: Kelly Teed ➤ Times rating: ★★★★ Uxbridge Arts & Culture was almost packed to the brim last Friday night for the opening night of Roots. The production – a bilingual solo show – was the first time Proudly Asian Theatre had branched out from central city suburbs and people turned out in droves to watch. While I’d seen a solo show before, I’d never seen a bilingual performance and my curiosity was
piqued from the beginning. The script, originally fully in Mandarin, was altered by Proudly Asian Theatre to alternate between Mandarin and English to make it more accessible to New Zealand audiences. Surtitles were projected onto a black screen in Chinese and English – a move which took some getting used to but not unlike watching a movie scene in a different language with subtitles. It was the premiere of Roots in New Zealand – and the first time playwright Oliver Chong has granted permission for the play to be performed by someone other than himself. The gender of the main character was also changed to reflect Singaporean-Kiwi actress Amanda Grace-Leo. The performance began with
three jugs of rice poured across cymbals and scattered on the floor – perhaps a symbolic representation of the way our family roots scatter across towns and countries through generations. It follows the journey of the main character, Hsu Hsien, and her quest to find her familial identity in the cultural confusion of Singapore. She arrives in China to reclaim her past, but ends up stumbling upon more questions than answers. As someone with Maori ancestry that I have only vague details of, I could relate to the character’s interest in knowing where she comes from and where her roots lie. But in the end, as they say, home is where the heart is. ➤ Catch Roots at Q Theatre this week from Thursday March 1 – Saturday March 3 at 6:30pm.
Thursdays @ Seven autumn concert series at All Saints Church will fill your evenings with magical sound. Take just an hour’s break at 7pm and drink in music ranging from delicate small ensembles to spectacular orchestral colours. Unusually, a gala Saturday night performance starts the series. Auckland Youth Orchestra earned a rousing reception on their last visit, and we welcome them back on Saturday March 3 at 7.30pm. This will be a full evening’s programme. It includes Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite, Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony and a flute concerto by Denmark’s most
prominent composer Carl Nielsen. The soloist will be award-winning flutist Anna Cooper. The series continues as normal, on Thursday evenings at 7pm, with a rich variety of artists and instruments: flute and piano, string quartet and organ, then to finish with, two unusual programmes: first, The Carnival of the Animals is a lively extravaganza with musicians, narrator and mime. Finally, the series closes with a visit to the folklore and fantasy of Bohemia. Thursdays, 7pm, at All Saints’, Howick. Admission is by donation at the door. ➤ Contact 534-6864.

t was a corporate affair with plenty of local businesses showing full support for the Waipuna Conference Suites Highbrook Fun Run, an annual event raising funds and awareness for local charities on February 21. The fun run organised by Highbrook Rotary was a good opportunity for companies and individuals from Highbrook/East Tamaki area to encourage team building and social responsibility. Difficult to miss was a sea of yellow –around 40 participants from the OfficeMax team having a jolly good time. A fun workout before the race got everyone warmed up. Also encouraging was a huge representation from Healthy Hearts, people who have suffered heart ailments and exercise to keep fit. Accompanying them were nurses for the one km walk. Overheard at the fun run/walk: a range of discussions from office politics to buying a new lounge suite, the boy next-door and a loss of $2 million in real estate— never a dull moment! Around 480 people who took time out to participate in the fun run were rewarded by free sausage sizzle by Mad Butcher and ice-cream. A running commentary by Jami-Lee Ross, also a Rotarian with Highbrook Rotary and live music kept everyone entertained at the well organised, fun event. Funds raised will be donated to four charities that include: Flat Bush Primary, Pillars, Middlemore Foundation and Comfort Kidz. ➤➤Winners from different categories are: Male: • 10 km Run - Barry Harrison time 00:43:51 • 5 km Run - Grant Lincoln 00:20:31 • 5km Walk - Geoff Prebble 00:37:48

Having trouble with your arthritic hips or knees?
Mr Habib Rahman, General and Bariatric Surgeon. Enjoyment of life is lost due to lack of ability to part-take in sports and activities. Obesity is a huge burden on individuals, societies, governments and the country due to health budgets, job productivity and quality of life. There are multiple factors in the cause of obesity, but the major cause is an imbalance in calories consumed and calories expended. Globally there is increased consumption of energy dense food; food rich in calorie content (fats and sugars) and an increase in physical inactivity due to the sedentary nature of many forms e.g., better modes of transportation and urbanisation. The policy makers, community leaders and all individuals should be alarmed by this killer epidemic. Each individual is responsible for their health and should take heed and do something about it today. Mr Habib Rahman is a General and Bariatric Surgeon. What is Obesity? Obesity is defined as excess accumulation of fat in the body. It is a very serious health issue for individuals, communities and countries. The world has never seen a greater health epidemic than the current world obesity epidemic. In 2014 according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) report 1.9 billion people were overweight and the trend of global obesity has doubled since 1980. New Zealand unfortunately is not a clean green country when it comes to obesity. We are the third fattest nation after USA and Mexico in the OECD nations. One in three adults above the age of 15 years is obese (31 per cent) and one in nine children aged 2-14 years are also obese (11 per cent). Obesity causes severe and chronic diseases, certain cancers and premature death. These are diabetes mellitus, obstructive sleep apnoea, and cardiovascular diseases including hypertension, heart diseases and stroke, musculoskeletal disorders especially osteoarthritis which is a highly disabling degenerative disease of the joints. Obstructive sleep apnoea is a condition which involves the stoppage of regular breathing during sleep. This is because of redundant fatty tissue at the back of the throat which results in lack of oxygen to the brain. This then jolts the body to kick start breathing again. Sleep apnoea results in broken sleep, tiredness and random falling asleep during the day. Certain cancers are caused by obesity, such as endometrial, breast, ovarian, prostate, liver, gallbladder and colon. Obesity leads to discrimination in society, employment, travel and various aspects of life. It is associated with poor self-image, lack of confidence and can often lead to depression and suicide.
Welcome to the Ormiston Weight Loss Service. Our service is intended to offer our community a surgical choice and clinical support, to assist in taking ownership of your health and moving forward to a greater place of wellness. WE’RE FALLING FOR AUTUMN
Tax changes focus on speculation R
evenue Minister Stuart Nash has confirmed the bright-line test on residential property sales will be extended from two years to five years in legislation currently making its way through Parliament. Mr Nash will introduce a Supplementary Order Paper to the Taxation (Annual Rates for 2017– 18, Employment and Investment Income, and Remedial Matters) Bill to give effect to the changes, which were signalled prior to the election. “The extension of the previous government’s bright-line test will help dampen property speculation and make homes more affordable,” Mr Nash says. “The previous government required income tax to be paid on any gains from residential property sold within two years of acquisition, with some exceptions. “The extension means that profits from residential investment properties which are bought and sold within five years will generally be taxable.” The proposal will ensure that residential property speculators pay income tax on their gains and makes property speculation less
As we start to leave behind a hot but wet kiwi summer, for many autumn is a fantastic time to be in the garden. With cooler mornings and evenings (no one is missing that humidity!) gardening can become pleasant once more. With the ground becoming moist, but still warm, it is ideal for planting trees and shrubs that will have time to establish before winter. Early season annuals start to arrive in store, such as pansies, polyanthus, calendula, poppies and snapdragon which will make a welcome change to your pots and garden beds. It’s also a great time to get some spring bulbs in the ground. There is a myriad of spring bulbs in store now, both in variety and colour. There’s always new varieties on offer to inspire, from rich plum colours perfect for a striking contrast against white and pastels, through to the eternally cheerful favorites like daffodils and freesias. The previous government required income tax to be paid on any gains from residential property sold within two years with some exceptions.

attractive. “We need investment which grows the economy and creates jobs, not the sort of investment which distorts the residential housing market. This measure will bring fairness back into the tax system,” Mr Nash says. “Reducing speculative demand will also help improve housing affordability for owner-occupiers. Current exemptions from the bright line test will remain. This includes the exemption for the main home of owner-occupiers
of residential property.” The extension to the brightline test will apply to residential investment properties purchased from the date on which the bill receives the Royal Assent, which is expected in March. The passage of the bill will also enable the Tax Working Group to factor the change into any consideration of a comprehensive capital gains tax. ➤➤For more information on the Bill, see http://taxpolicy.ird. govt.nz

real estate
A new website to help consumers make good decisions when buying or selling property, has been welcomed by Consumer NZ. Industry regulator the Real Estate Authority (REA) has launched settled.govt.nz as a source of information and guidance for homebuyers and sellers. “Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest financial decisions many Kiwis will ever make, with the potential to hugely impact their life,” Consumer NZ deputy CEO Karen McDonald says. “An independent resource,

tion about a property was the second most common issue raised. Advertising faux pas, poor customer service, and incorrect sale and purchase agreements rounded out the top five. Mrs McDonald says a recent Consumer NZ survey shows how heavily decisions around home ownership affect people’s lives. “Three in five homeowners with a mortgage were just getting by or finding it difficult on their present income and a third had cut back spending on essentials such as groceries or power.”

Blues show real promise G
enuine promise overcame the disappointment of a first round 41-34 Super Rugby loss to the Highlanders, but the Blues desperately need a win against the Chiefs at Eden Park on Friday night to confirm their improvement. A solid forward performance backed up by some touches of brilliance from Akira Ioane, his brother Rieko, Bryn Gatland and Matt Duffie offers hope despite suffering their 12th loss in a row to a NZ franchise. Akira Ioane was a national sevens star but, unlike his younger brother, his immense natural gifts have not made him the force he is capable of becoming in the 15-man game. Part of the reason is his body position has been too high and he has too often taken ruck ball flat-footed. There was a big improvement against the Highlanders when he was rewarded with two touchdowns and he will be even more dangerous when he roves wider in the manner of Kieran Read, makes breaks and sets up tries for others. With Jerome Kaino headed overseas at the end of this season, the athletic Ioane needs to continue his improvement if he is to challenge Liam Squire and Vaea Fifita as Kaino’s

successor. Another major plus for the Blues against the Highlanders was the form of third string first-five Gatland who capped an exceptional first half with a sharp try. Gatland doesn’t have the tricky footwork of Stephen Perofeta but does have much the same goal-kicking prowess and rugby nous of NZ Maori first-five Otere Black in taking smart options. With Blues newcomers Perofeta and Black suffering pre-season injuries, the cool-headed Gatland is taking his chance to impress, just as he did in the opening match against last year’s British and Irish Lions, coached by his father Warren. What he brings to a Blues squad big on flash but small on substance is a level-headedness the franchise badly needs. On Friday night he will face a fast and elusive opponent in the mercurial Damian McKenzie, who tried too much and was outplayed by Richie Mo’unga in the Chiefs 45-23 loss to the Crusaders last weekend. With so much strike power coming from Rieko Ioane and Matt Duffie on the wings, the extent of their effectiveness will depend on how well the

Sonny Bill Williams/George Moala midfield combination clicks. Having taken time to recover from the severe Achilles injury he suffered at the Rio Olympics, it wasn’t until the All Blacks northern tour late last year that Williams showed his real class with straight running, strong defence and his famed offloads. Tough as teak Moala is an immensely strong player but still needs to develop his passing skills if the Blues backline is to produce the cohesion necessary to win big games. He is also a good winger and the option exists for him to switch positions with Rieko Ioane should coach Tana Umaga want to take that gamble. It is one that would interest All Blacks head coach Steve Hansen who believes centre will eventually be Ioane’s best position. Meanwhile with Brad Webber, Charlie Ngatai, Anton Lienert-Brown and McKenzie featuring in the Chiefs backline, the Blues backs won’t be the only ones producing the fireworks. The Chiefs also have a strong scrum capable of causing big problems if the Blues’ big men don’t muscle up. ➤➤Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author
Good turnout expected for golf Howick RSA’s annual Welfare Charity Golf Tournament on March 9 is expected to attract a field of more than 120 players. Organised by the RSA’s Golf Section, the tournament is open to anyone - not just RSA members. The tournament hopes to raise at least as much as the $6000 raised last year. The funds will be donated to the RSA’s Community Welfare Trust which will distribute the cash to the areas of youth, education and welfare or to any public charity. The RSA’s secretary manager Scott Adams said the tournament this year will be at the Howick Golf Club at Musick Point. “This year Pakuranga Park Village are major sponsors of the tournament,” said Adams,
alongside Rebel Sport, Ideal Electrical, DB Breweries, Mayon Industries (Woodbine) and Steve Weston Jewellers as well as many local businesses. The tournament has been held for around 20 years. Howick RSA organises many community charitable events throughout the year however tended to largely operate under the radar, Adams said. “What we are trying to do is to highlight to the community we live in, is that we are here for you in many areas. “An association with the RSA is not necessarily a requirement, so if you have a genuine need, then we would be happy to have you approach us. The RSA Golf Section, all volunteers, have always done an amazing job.”

HPK top junior club in NZ The Howick Pakuranga Swim Club put on a dominant display recently at the annual Junior Festival Championships. Competition was fierce among the 400 swimmers, however HPK still walked away with 68 medals in total as well as claiming the title of top club for another year. Club captain Ella Crowe secured the first gold medal of the meet by dominating the 400m freestyle to win by more than 10 seconds. Not to be outdone, the club’s top male swimmer Chris Jiang repeated the feat by taking out the boys 400m freestyle by more than 10 seconds, rocketing HPK to lead over the competition after just two events. There were some stand-out swimmers over the weekend, including Mulan Chan See with 12 golds and one silver, Ella Crowe with four gold, five silver and three bronze and Chris Jiang who dominated his age group with eight gold, five silver and a bronze. These swimmers went on to win their age groups and rank first in New Zealand. Other medallists include Miandi Oosthuizen, Anna Ye, Julian Ling, Taanmay Annappa, Danielle Asiata, Daniel Cieplinski, Ezanda Green, Eric Yang and Daniel Loh.
Cricketer opens new gym ■ BY KELLY TEED
H
e’s a renowned international cricketer but he still calls Howick home. Mitch McClenaghan began his illustrious career on the pitch of the Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club many years ago. Since then, he’s gone on to play for the Auckland Aces, Black Caps and in the Indian Premier League. These days, he’s focusing on domestic T20 after turning down a contract with New Zealand Cricket, but he’s still involved heavily at helping out at his local club - a “Howick Pakuranga Cricket player through and through,” he says. He’s also just helped bring the latest exercise craze out east with an F45 studio in Howick, following in the footsteps of his Sydney Thunder teammate Shane Watson, who co-owns multiple F45 gyms in Australia. McClenaghan, 31, says he was drawn to F45 while recovering from a knee injury. “[I was] trying to find a way to stay fit throughout my career. I was massively into crossfit but when I started international cricket I found it wasn’t something I was capable of maintaining because it was time-consuming and needing to be technical as well which brought injuries into my cricket.” He says the intensity of cricket has

changed and players who aren’t physically fit will also struggle with performing mentally. “F45 meant I could manage my injuries [with] short and sharp sessions. Now I’m getting older I’m interested in getting the most out of my workouts and not screwing my body up. “Cricket’s become more professional and T20’s taken over international cricket. You need to be fitter, you need to be more agile and ...it’s more of a power sport than it was potentially 15-20 years ago.” McClenaghan says the rise in social media and online keyboard warrior abuse has made it harder to develop a cricket career in the spotlight. “You can already see with young kids, how much harder it is day to day. As you get older you start getting thicker skin but when people start abusing 16/17 year olds starting out, that’s not okay.” He says it’s time to make a stand and stick up for the next generation coming through. “I think it’s going to be harder for young cricketers coming up with social media, career’s going to be in the spotlight and everyone will have access to them. “If there’s ways of raising awareness and having ramifications down the line...if we identify it now then hopefully something happens with it,” he says.
