Thousands of people turned up for Movie in Parks and couldn’t stop hugging and getting photographs with the life-size Princess Poppy doll that was to be awarded to the winner of the Times Princess Poppy Drawing competition. Also present were Minister for Social Development and Disability Issues Carmel Sepuloni, Labour MP Deborah Russell, ACT Party leader David Seymour, National MPs JamiLee Ross and Dr Pramjeet Parmar as well as Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy. Supporting the Race Relations Day and Multicultural Festival on Sunday night hosted by Steven Wong, chairman of the New Zealand

Excited about the launch of the association, its chair Peter Young said the idea is to bring multicultural communities together. “We will have fitness activities at the outdoor gym at Kilkenny Drive. We plan to arrange for a personal trainer to show residents how to use the gym equipment in parks,” Mr Young says. “A lot of old people don’t

There will be doctors who talk on holistic health and group walks. “Being a local resident, I learn that each ethnic group has different ways of improving health and wellness. “For example, Indians are into yoga and the art of breathing while Chinese do Tai Chi, group dancing in the park. The association’s deputy chair Karim Albayaa says that people in the area can come together for multi-cultural gardening at Barry Curtis Park and plant different trees representative of the country they come from. “We want more people to get involved in the society we live in. “There are also plans of having a new badminton court and a place where people can come together to play table tennis.”

Both eight-year-old Katelyn Stevenson and 10-year-old Jude Clayton were absolutely thrilled as their names were announced at the event and were presented with one pink princess each. Children shortlisted in the drawing competition were also awarded story books. rom princess of Niue to daughter of Niue, every island wants to put their claim on Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s baby, said Minister for Pacific Peoples, Aupito William Sio at a formal ceremony hosted to welcome the premier at ASB Polyfest on Friday. Having just returned from Niue and Samoa a week before, the Jacindamania was clearly at work as Mr Sio called her mother, daughter and princess of Niue. “Her baby’s birth is not only going to be celebrated in the length and breadth of Aotearoa but is also going to be celebrated by Samoa, Niue, Cook Islands, Tonga, Tahiti and every island that will want a stake in naming her,” he said at a formal ceremony at the Polyfest attended by Labour Party Ministers, MPs, members of the opposition and other stakeholders. “Every island wants to give Jacinda’s baby a name and the baby’s first birthday will be celebrated by hundreds of churches and every island,” said Mr Sio. Maybe you should call your baby Niue, suggested a high ranking government official from Niue.

The 37-year-old PM tried to make light of the flood of compliments saying, “That is very sweet of you to say that I am daughter of Niue but I have to earn it. I am so uncoordinated and if you see me dance....” Practically everyone at the event complimented the PM with a baby bump about her ‘special glow’, but Ms Ardern quickly brushed it off saying, “I am only sweating!” Looking positively
relaxed, she tried to focus on the young leaders instead at the iconic multicultural festival that celebrates song, dance, culture and diversity. Addressing the students at the MIT Niue Stage and the University of Auckland Samoan Stage, she said, “People keep saying that young people are our future, but I believe that they are our present, our now. “You give me hope that New Zealand is in good hands.”

Puppchino and dog treats With tails wagging and owners in tow, dozens of dogs took part in the Good Home’s SPCA fundraiser on Sunday. Around 20 dogs turned up throughout the afternoon to enjoy a puppchino and dog treat, says The Good Home’s food and beverage manager April Campbell. Spot prizes including dog toys and marrow bones were given to each of the dogs in attendance. The event raised around $220.
A Howick infant has been taken into care after suffering serious injuries believed to be consistent with domestic abuse. The four-month-old baby girl was admitted to Middlemore Hospital on February 18 where medical staff discovered significant fractures to her skull, ribs, arms and legs. The fractures have been described by medical experts as being of varying ages and classically associated with non-accidental injury. A police investigation into the incident has been launched and they are calling for anyone with information to come forward. While the child is expected to make a full recovery, police are “extremely concerned” by these injuries and Oranga Tamariki has been notified, says Detective Senior Sergeant Eddie Sutherland. The child’s family and neighbours have been questioned but police say they are no closer to finding out who inflicted the injuries on the child. Detective Senior Sergeant Sutherland says the safety and wellbeing of the child is paramount and she is currently in the care of Oranga Tamariki. “Police have not yet charged anyone however our enquiries are ongoing,” he says. “We are now urging anyone with information which can assist our investigation to do the right thing and contact police.” ➤➤Anyone with information is urged to contact the Counties Manukau Child Protection team on 213-8571 or anonymously to the crime stoppers reporting line on 0800 555 111. ➤➤You can also send police a private message on Facebook.

ROTARY
Celebrating culture and charity ■ BY FARIDA MASTER They are a fine example of immigrants making meaningful contributions to their community, said Dr Chung Hsing Chou director general Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Auckland, at a recently held Cultural and Charity Night hosted by the Rotary Club of Auckland South. Representatives from the Dove Hospice as well as Make-a-Wish Foundation present at the event were truly moved when the only Taiwanese Rotary Club in the country handed over a cheque of $15,752 to Make-a-Wish Foundation. Another cheque of $15,752 was gifted to Dove Hospice. “A lot of effort had gone into fun-

Great Easter eggstravaganza at East City It’s that time of year again – the Easter eggstravaganza is back at East City Wesleyan Church. The free community event is one of the biggest community events in east Auckland, helping children and families understand the meaning of Easter, why there are public holidays and the significance of Good Friday and Easter Day regarding the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Senior Minister Rev Richard Waugh says the eggstravaganza event attracts crowds of children and families to learn about the meaning of Easter. “To be well informed and well educated about Kiwi life, it is very important for young ones to be informed about the meaning of Easter and about why Christianity and its teaching about Jesus is so important to our world today. “Our many volunteers are very excited by our event and put a lot of preparation into the creativity and games and free activities.” ➤➤Head down to East City Wesleyan Church on Saturday March 24 at 2pm.

n ever-growing concern of mine is the proposal made by the Labour Government and Mayor Phil Goff to introduce a regional fuel tax for Auckland of 11.5 cents a litre. I recently held a public meeting in Pakuranga where I discussed this issue and was heartened to hear from many locals who agree that this proposal simply won’t work and won’t solve the transport issues facing Auckland. The key problem is that all existing tax on fuel is part of a “user pays” system, where people who drive their own vehicles are paying for the upkeep, improvement, and construction of the roads they use. The National Land Transport Fund (NLTF) is a sound system that invests our money back into the roads that directly correlate with the fuel we use. When this regional fuel tax was first proposed, Phil Goff quickly talked up the need for it to pay for things like light rail up Dominion Road and busways around Auckland, but residents of Pakuranga won’t ever use these services other than those being constructed locally through the AMETI project, which has already been planned for. Currently, as part of the price of fuel, we pay around 66 cents a litre
With Simeon Brown
Simeon SAYS in excise according to the AA, all of which is paid into the NLTF. In addition to that, GST is collected on the overall price of fuel, which amounts to about 10 cents a litre. Why should the residents of Auckland have to pay even more tax for things the majority will get no benefit from, when we are dealing with consistent rates rises each year and already pay a huge amount of tax on our fuel? The question is what can we do about this? The Auckland Council is currently going through a public consultation period on their 10-year budget and The Auckland Plan, which includes their desire for a regional fuel tax. I would encourage you to have your say, and you can visit the website akhaveyoursay.nz up until March 28 to make a submission. Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga
Your rights at work Your employment agreement is a record of the conditions of work that you have agreed to and if you’re an employee you must have a written employment agreement – it’s the law. “Even if you don’t have a written employment agreement, you are still entitled to minimum employment rights,” says Louise Boswell from CAB Pakuranga. “For example you can’t be paid less than the minimum wage, and once you’ve worked at a place for a while you’re entitled to paid annual leave, sick leave and bereavement leave.” “If your employer wants you to work a 90 day trial, they can only do this if it’s in your written employment agreement and you haven’t worked for them before. You also must sign the employment agreement before you start working for them. During the trial period you are still entitled to the minimum employment rights.” Louise says, “Another thing is

She is planning to move overseas towards the end of year. Her question was if her employer finds out she is leaving are they allowed to fire her. They can only dismiss you by giving written notice stating the grounds for termination. Looking forward to retirement in so many, different ways R
etirement ain’t what it used to be. It’s better. Retirees are not only living longer, they’re generally healthier and more adventurous. As you’ll see in our many stories in this special feature edition called Living the Dream, on average, 80 per cent of 65-year-old men can now expect to live until they’re 90, and 65-year-old women until they’re 94. How incredible is that? Sure, our retirees still love their gardens and social group meetings and walks but so many are going above and beyond and cashing up or downsizing the home to spoil themselves.
They are relocating to sunnier climates, taking on the great outdoors, enjoying cruising our beautiful oceans, buying or renting campervans to explore our gorgeous country and even heading abroad for guided tours in wonderful destinations. There are of course many considerations before the Big R rolls up, some fairly serious of course, including reducing debt, calculating adequate savings plans and determining when and if to sell the home. You’ll find a little guidance in this publication. Enjoy. Tramping – one of the many adventuruous activities retirees can enjoy. Photo supplied

happy, healthy retirement means finding the right balance of proximity to family and friends, access to healthcare and amenities, and a smart financial investment for financial freedom. Bloom Living offers an alternative to a traditional retirement village: freehold retirement apartments, right in the heart of where you want to live. The key word here is freehold so owners retain 100 per cent of proceeds from any future resale. Financial security is not the only reason for choosing an apartment in a freehold development. Social inclusion and connection to a community is vital to a healthy retirement lifestyle, and Bloom Hirstich is a great example of this. Conveniently located at 20 Alfriston Road, Manurewa East, Bloom Hirstich is a development with a very special history. The Hirstich family owned this historic vineyard site, known as Alfriston Vineyards, for more than 70 years and the name has been chosen as a lasting legacy to this. Bloom apartments are designed exclusively for those over 60 who want to downsize from a larger home without compromising on quality, and those wishing to remain in the community where they have raised families and put down roots. Based on a ‘lifetime design’ philosophy, the apartments enable owners to remain independent for as long as possible. Level access throughout is standard with plenty of space to move

Apartments have a private garden or balcony as well as access to a communal orchard and shared vegetable garden. But the real beauty of Bloom Hirstich is its location. Everything you might need is close at hand, including doctors, shops, banks, cinemas, gardens, clubs, sports centres and transport links. It’s also a short commute to the motorway, Manukau City, the Super Clinic, Middlemore Hospital and the airport. Bloom’s mission is to provide achievable, independent freehold retirement apartments so you have the freedom to flourish and enjoy your retirement, your way. It’s anticipated that Bloom Hirstich will be completed in September 2019. Visit bloomliving. co.nz to find out more.

Back to living life to the fullest
Ron and Ngaire’s 100% score for Bruce McLaren. It was a simple cat scratch that speeded up Ron and Ngaire Higgins’ decision to move into Ryman Healthcare’s Bruce McLaren retirement village. The decision was easy, unlike the healing process. Cleo their beautiful Birman cat with the big blue eyes clawed Ron on the leg at the beginning of 2017 and the result, says Ron, was an arduous recovery. “I ended up in hospital with an infection for ve weeks. “They had to open up my knee to clean out the mechanical part of my knee replacement and now I have what’s known as concrete knee, so I can’t bend it. “On top of that I had to carry around a bag of antibiotics which were being administered intravenously for another four months.” The experience underlined for the couple how much more difficult the everyday things involved in
home ownership were becoming. Comparing that time with life in the village now, Ron, 91, can think of a positive straightaway: “I don’t have to do lawns and cut hedges!” he laughs. Adds Ngaire, 89: “Mowing the lawns is heavy work for an elderly man! It was just getting to be too much.” And what with all the laundry, cooking and cleaning chores on top of that, home life was becoming quite difficult. The couple put their home in Hatelds Beach, Orewa on the market as they investigated retirement villages, however the search was over before it had even begun! “We came down to have a look near Howick for somewhere close to Ngaire’s daughter Denise and we didn’t even look at any other,” says Ron. “We just came here and decided this was it.” The couple, who met on a blind
date after being matched up by their best friends and recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary, have now lived in their serviced apartment at Bruce McLaren for eight months. They love the fact they no longer have to worry about getting all the little chores done - their towels are changed daily, the rubbish gets collected, and once a week the bed linen is changed and the apartment is vacuumed and cleaned. There’s also a cooked meal and morning and afternoon tea provided each day. “The food is just like my mother used to dish up at home, I think that’s very good,” says Ngaire. The effects of that, says Ron, have been huge as their lives have opened up again. “We have done a lot more being here than we were doing at home. There are a lot of trips and things and it’s more social. We’ve made quite a few new friends and
enjoy mingling with everybody at Happy Hour.” Ngaire adds that they’re just as happy enjoying a day trip out to Muriwai beach as they are sitting out on their balcony listening to the birds chirping in the hedge and chatting to their neighbours, catching a movie in the village cinema or people-watching in the village centre. “We’ve got a swimming pool here too and I’m a swimmer. It’s warm and always available,” she says. Ngaire is very proud of her good health, pointing out that she doesn’t take any medication at all, and loves to keep t and active by walking regularly and doing yoga when she can. These days, she admits, she’s happy just to walk around the village after what was supposed to be a quick walk back to the village from the shops down the road saw her recently getting lost and
ending up in Cockle Bay. “I got my pilot’s licence at 52 so you wonder how I managed to get lost but it’s a lovely walk around the building,” she laughs. The option of further health care facilities within the village care centre should they need them in the future was a huge factor. Ron adds: “If anything happens to me, there’s always somewhere for Ngaire to go and someone to look after her which to me is worth the weight.” And with all the help they need on hand and delivered by the friendly and helpful staff, life at the village is pretty good. “It’s fantastic,” says Ron. “My advice to other people who are thinking about moving in is you can’t go wrong. I think it’s 100 per cent!” Give Rose a call on 535 0225 to discuss your retirement living options and to arrange a private tour.

arnessing the healing power of horses reduces stress levels and improves quality of life – for people of all ages and abilities. Recently, residents from Ambridge Rose Manor got up close and personal with the horses at Ambury Park Centre and discovered firsthand how therapeutic the magnificent creatures can be. “Residents Richard Speight and Isobel Hayden were involved with horses all their lives, and both felt completely at home in their presence,” says Ambridge Rose Manor activities team member Pamela Hayde. The residents thoroughly enjoyed meeting the horses, but it wasn’t all foaling around. They had a special delivery for the trusty steeds in the form of pre-used and sterilised towels from Ambridge Rose Manor. “We wanted to do something that would benefit the local community,” says Hayde, who devised the initiative. “The towels are going to be put to good use rather than being thrown away and
they will be used to dry the horses when they return in from the paddock. “Everybody absolutely loved the experience and the visit was a huge benefit to all. “We hope to make further visits in the future.” Ambridge Rose Manor residents Richard Speight and Isobel Hayden reminiscing with the horses at Ambury Park Centre. Generating friendship T
oday’s children and older people often have limited opportunities for interaction. Families are living further away from each other, people are having families at a later age – children often don’t get the chance to spend time with their older relatives. This means limited chances for inter-generational learning and sharing. The Children’s Corner Howick and the local Communicare Friendship
Centre are partnering to create opportunities for preschoolers to engage with older people and cultivate special friendships. They are aiming to improve children’s awareness of ageing and develop a sense of caring and respect for the elderly. Inter-generational activities also increase mental and physical health in older people. An opportunity to nurture, share experiences and be creative increases self- worth, reduces
feelings of isolation and improves emotional wellbeing – the very essence of Communicare’s friendship centre. Diane Cornelius, owner of The Children’s Corner Centre, believes in the importance of providing these opportunities for children to develop empathy with the elderly. Diane says, “Children’s sense of self and belonging is fostered when they actively engage within their local community.”
Communicare Coordinator Sarah Gates says, “It’s wonderful to see the children with our members. Enjoying each-others company, being creative and keeping them young at heart.” The children join the members of Howick’s Communicare Friendship Centre sharing in a variety of crafts, games and activities. St Patrick’s Day celebrations turned the Bruce McLaren village centre into a sea of green as residents adorned themselves in wigs, hats and green clothing to mark the Irish national day. With village manager Chantelle Hand hailing from Northern Ireland, the occasion was given an extra air of authenticity, so much so that Ryman Healthcare’s chief executive Gordon MacLeod knew that Bruce McLaren was the place to be that day! The residents were entertained by children from the Doyle Academy of Irish Dance followed by live music and singing before the area was transformed again for a special cocktail night to launch the village’s annual art expo weekend. Chantelle said the atmosphere was ‘brilliant’. “It was a fantastic buzz. The food was amazing, the chefs really did us proud.

It meant for once the cocktail party wasn’t such a black tie affair as many people kept their green clothes on!” Sales advisor Rose Lawlor said it was an awesome way to launch what was a very busy weekend for the village. A steady flow of people passed through to see the artworks on display coming from as far afield as Remuera, Papakura, Orewa and even Tauranga and around half a dozen paintings were sold too. Another highlight from the same week was a day trip to the Hunua Ranges with the village’s activities coordinators taking two busloads of independent residents for the experience. “They took the portable barbecue and had lunch while they were there and they came back raving about the good time they’d all had,” said Rose.

Retirement planning saving for retirement A
sk anyone who’s retired and they will say to start saving for retirement as soon as you can. Even if it seems a long way off, it pays to start planning for retirement as early as possible. How much we need to save will depend on our own circumstances, but the sooner we start, the better the position we’ll be in when we eventually stop working. While NZ Super (the government pension) can help us get by, it’s our own savings that will help to make retirement fun and comfortable.
How much will I need to retire? Everyone’s retirement needs are different. To work this out, we can start by thinking about how long we will have in retirement, what sort of lifestyle we will want, and where we will live.
How many years will I have in retirement? There is no ‘retirement age’ in New Zealand. NZ Super is paid from age 65, but you don’t have to stop working
to get it. These days, more and more people are working beyond 65 either full-time or part-time. We’re living longer these days. On average, 80 per cent of 65-year-old men can now expect to live until they’re 90, and 65-year-old women until they’re 94. In the future, we’ll probably live even longer. These figures are based on the latest Statistics New Zealand cohort life tables. Let’s say we plan to retire at 65. We need to save or have another plan to provide the income we want for 25 years or more, and make sure our money lasts as long as we do.
What sort of retirement lifestyle do I want? What will our cost of living be in retirement? Some costs may go up (like healthcare) while others (such as education, clothing, housing, work-related travel) may go down. If we have children, they will probably be financially independent. We also need to think about what our goals might be in retirement – travelling to new places? Joining clubs,
going out to dinner and shows?
Will I live in my own home or rent? If we rent, we’ll need more savings to cover the cost – but on the other hand, we won’t have money tied up in a home. However, owning the place we live in, debt-free, will reduce the risk of rent increases or being asked to find a new place to live. We’ll have more control over our finances, but we will have to take care of maintenance, insurance and rates. Being mortgage-free by retirement is a great goal to aim for. The reason many people currently in retirement are able to manage financially is because they no longer have the burden of mortgage repayments.
Budget for retirement Getting close to retirement? It might be a good time to work out a detailed budget. Think about what weekly expenses might be in today’s money. Take basics into account,
such as insurance, maintaining the We also need to think about what our goals might be house and car, in retirement – travelling to new places? Your view Legalised rascism?
Marama Davidson is calling for the Government to facilitate the forcing of race-based wards on New Zealanders. This concerns me greatly because: • It is born out of a dictatorial and racist ideology. • It ignores the egalitarian wishes of “the people”. • It is condescending towards all those of Maori descent. • It disregards healthy human psychology. • It ignores the facts. As MP Ron Mark said in his speech in Parliament (28/6/17), this approach presupposes that all those with any Maori blood are the same and think alike. It also presupposes they are incapable of achieving on their own merits or abilities. Well, we all know that that is simply not true. We are surrounded by people of Maori descent who have shown they have the attitude, ability and fortitude to have a good and successful life without race-based laws greasing their paths. None of them have relied on racist policies. Ron Mark rightly says that any discussion about Maori representation would need to start with the question “which Maori”? As a New Zealander with Maori blood, the exmayor of Carterton (2 terms) and a long-standing MP, he is living proof that we don’t need apartheid in local government or anywhere else. Marama Davidson is very good at twisting semantics to imply she is doing God’s work, but her ideology only serves a power-hungry elite. It does nothing to help ordinary people struggling with everyday chal-

lenges. So please think of all New Zealanders and ignore the calls for legalising racism. Ensuring equal rights is the job of government. It is then up to us, our families and society to work for good outcomes. Arthur Moore Pakuranga
Where’s your pride?
The Auckland Council has more staff than the combined councils that were amalgamated to form the Auckland Council • Do you want your rates to pay for council employees to go into the entertainment business? • Movies in the parks, V8 car racing, pride parades, Music in the parks etc • Do you want unelected people who you can’t vote out making decisions for you? We have some costing us millions of dollars and they are flexing their muscles. There are many more cases that I have not listed that involve the use of ratepayers’ money for purposes other than core services. Councils are elected to provide water, roads, rubbish collections and other core services, not get into education, entertainment and child welfare etc. Arthur Moore Pakuranga
On going for walks through the neighbourhoods, there is no pride now-a-days in people keeping their properties neat and lawns mowed. It doesn’t take much to mow the lawn, it’s almost every second or third house in the street looking unkempt, and lawns unmowed for weeks on end. Most houses are rented but that doesn’t stop you making some effort in keeping your place tidy. Come on people, take some pride in your place whether rented or not. We are lucky in this country to still be able to live in a house. Margaret Castles Botany Downs
Doggone it, we’ve had enough
Council must stick to core business
Open letter to our Mayor, Mr Goff; I am penning this open letter as a law abiding licensed dog. I am writing to protest. We dogs love beaches, we love to paddle and swim and take our families there. It seems now every beach in our area is NO DOGS; most certainly during daylight saving. A few beaches are ‘’leash only’’ but how can you paddle and swim in a leash? I bet you couldn’t. A check of the internet reveals a number of supposed dog-friendly beaches that, sadly, are no more. Our nearest and only beach within
The document “Have Your Say” from the Auckland Council has a number of questions missing, as the questions asked are designed to provide the answers the council wants. Some of the missing questions are: • Do you want less (especially highly-paid) council employees with huge redundancy payments?
170th celebrations and the recent Brit & Euro Classic Car Show, held at Lloyd Elsmore Park. At the car show I much appreciated Reay & Brian Neben, and Nick Krause, attending, like they often do for other key community events. I am sure many people join with me in saying your good work is much appreciated. Rev Dr Richard Waugh Howick
a reasonable drive where I can play off-leash all year round is Maraetai. The same is true for most regional parks and reserves where my family cannot take me for those long weekend walks. Even for licence-paying dogs, Auckland is becoming, under your mayorship, a city of restriction and restraint. We have had enough of dogscrimination and demand our rights. There is talk of doggy disobedience days planned on certain beaches. You have been warned. Name and breed withheld due to fear of reprisals
Qantas goes gender-neutral How long will the tail wag the dog before the dog bites back? Qantas Airlines has issued a new list of permissible words which its staff must use in place of time-honoured and understandable words, in order to make some passengers and other staff members more comfortable. Out are words like wife, husband, Mum and Dad etc. to be replaced by spouse, partner and parents, and words like honey, love, guys, are to be replaced as they are too genderspecific. This is to avoid offending LGBT families. Not satisfied with changing the laws to suit their lifestyle, the LGBT’s now want to dictate how the majority must speak to avoid any possibility of offending them or being inappropriate. This would be a joke if it was not simply offensive. I know who I will not travel with from now on. Harvey Rosieur Howick
Well done the Times
I was concerned to recently read about a number of community newspapers around New Zealand closing up, due to Fairfax rationalising its operations. We can be most grateful that Times Newspapers is independent and locally-owned. Further, that the well-being and community spirit of our east Auckland community of Howick-Pakuranga-Botany-Flat Bush is strongly supported and fostered by the Times Newspapers team. Well done Times CEO and founder Reay Neben, editor Nick Krause, and the whole team, for all you do in our local community to foster efficient and important communication, sharing of news and public notices, and available jobs that are specifically focussed to our east Auckland community. Such support was ably demonstrated in your recent promotion and support of the Howick

(from $1.020m to $1.036m from 54 sales for the second half of last year compared to the same period in 2016). Barfoot & Thompson’s list of Auckland’s top 20 suburbs was compiled from sales records comparing July to December 2017 to the same period the previous year. Only suburbs with the highest percentage growth in median price, and 20 or more sales for both periods, made the cut. “Many of these suburbs, particularly Glen Innes, Orewa, Pukekohe and Hobsonville, are seeing significant investment in new housing and commu-
nity infrastructure. “Value is also being placed on good transport links. Most of the listed suburbs are in close proximity to motorways and are well serviced by bus and train stations, or, in the case of Hobsonville, a ferry service straight to downtown Auckland. “Affordability is also a factor in these suburbs’ rise to the top, with eight recording median values under our overall 2017 median of $843,583, and just over half of the list having a median under $1 million.” Mr Thompson says the strength of the company’s ‘hot
BEFORE
spots’ approach is in how it reflects trends in buyer preferences, market activity and the physical changes in suburbs all over greater Auckland. “These lists provide a unique view of buyers’ preferences and their measures of value for money, and how these shift around the city over time. It tells a very interesting story as Auckland continues to grow and evolve at pace. He notes changes in market activity over the last six to nine months means the value growth across the top 20 is more measured in comparison to previous lists, although still very strong. “The double-digit growth experienced by our list-leading suburbs during this period is a testament to the strength of their offering to buyers.” He says some previously high-performing suburbs failed to reach the sales number criteria, despite sustained value growth. “For example, suburbs like Ponsonby, Mission Bay and Kohimarama continue to attract good value growth but didn’t make the list due to sales volumes below the cut-off. Vendors are clearly holding on to their prized properties.”

ew areas of Auckland are feeling the heat according to Barfoot & Thompson’s latest list of ‘hot spot’ suburbs, which has been released twice a year by the company since 2015. “This list includes suburbs we haven’t seen in the running since 2016, and some completely new to the top 20,” says managing director Peter Thompson. “Unlike previous lists, this one is not headed by high-end suburbs, but includes a number of up-and-coming neighbourhoods, many in the midst of major growth and regeneration.” Glen Innes moves to the top spot, from 13th in the first half of 2017, with 19.2 per cent value growth and a median price well past the $1 million mark. In second and third place, Mt Albert and Orewa return to the list for the first time since early 2016, with 19 per cent and 10.9 per cent value growth respectively. The balance of the list features many newcomers including Pukekohe, Ranui, Mt Roskill, Hobsonville and Takanini, each with value growth between 4.5 per cent and 10.8 per cent. Howick comes in at number 20 with 1.57 per cent value growth

HPCC take 301 into final day Howick Pakuranga continued their charge to the Hedley Howarth Premier title at Lloyd Elsmore Park posting 301 in their first innings against East Coast Bays. The home side were in early trouble at 22/3 with Chris Groenink doing the damage for ECB. However, it was that man Donovan Grobbelaar who brought his side back into the contest, using all his experience in his run-a-ball 85. Grobbelaar hit 11 fours and three sixes in his knock, batting through the middle of the day with opener Bill Walsh (65). Howick suffered another mini collapse around the 50 over mark, losing a couple of quick wickets. It was the lower order who rallied for the home side, Adam Jones (45) holding things together at number 10 to ensure Howick Pakuranga passed the 300 mark. Groenink finished with 4-55 from 23 overs while Michael Ross was the surprise

package with 3-26. There was enough time for 17 overs from the Howick Pakuranga bowlers, with Jamie Brown and Grobbelaar claiming a wicket each to leave the game poised with ECB 51/2. Michael Ross (31*) and the in-form Seb Langridge (9*) will resume next week for the visitors to see if they can deny Howick Pak the title. HPCC’s Jim Allnatt said: “Our prems ended up having a fairly good position because the guys showed their character and hung in there all day against a top line bowling attack on a wicket that assisted bowlers, although to be fair, it seemed to play a bit easier as it dried out. “The boys have got it all front of them next Saturday but their fate is in their hands and that’s good. I can absolutely guarantee they’ll give everything they’ve got.” ■ Howick Pakuranga 301 (B Walsh 65, D Grobbelaar 85, C Neale 31, R Botadra 31*, A Jones 45; C Groenink 4-55, M Ross 3-26) playing East Coast Bays 51/2 (M Ross 31*)
Monk: Another success T
he sun was shining and the atmosphere was vibrant at Stockade Hill on Sunday as locals turned out in droves for the annual Howick Fun Run and Walk. Organising committee member Colin Monk said the event was once again a huge success, with a record number of local school participants. Mr Monk said the Rotary Club of Howick, with assistance from Howick College senior students and the Howick Coastguard, ran an extremely well-organised community event. The event offered three different courses to suit varying levels of fitness – walkers or runners could choose from a 5.9km primary course, a 6.9km intermediate course, or an 8.1km extended course, with five water stations available on the way all starting and finishing on Stockade Hill. All entry fees and sausage sizzle proceeds went to the Howick Coastguard. Mr Monk says the large

family involvement in this year’s event was a major success story and made it a “truly family affair”. Joining the school effort were a number of teachers and parents, more than the previous two years saw, which “added to the festive atmosphere surrounding the morning,” said Mr Monk. “We even had two wellknown school principals joining in on the run – what
a great example to give your pupils!” Bucklands Beach Primary School took out the win for the primary section with Bucklands Beach Intermediate taking out the intermediate division, both continuing their winning streak from last year. Mr Monk says with a number of schools participating for the first time this year, the Howick Fun Walk and Run “is becoming a must for
both teachers and parents to encourage their children to get off the couch and join the fun.” Final entrant numbers had not been finalised at the time of publication, but Mr Monk estimated participants were up 30 per cent from last year – a great effort from the Howick community! Spot prizes were generously donated by local businesses and handed out at the finish line. Mr Monk says the AvantiPlus roadster bike was a magnificent prize, as was the Charcoal BBQ and accessories donated by Mitre 10 Mega Botany. “Unfortunately, the names of the businesses are too numerous to include in this report, but their generosity is really appreciated by all those involved, both organisers and participants,” said Mr Monk. “It would not be possible to run these events without the support of grants from the Howick Local Board, Stevenson Village Trust, and the June Gray Trust, and this is really appreciated.”
