Home destroyed by blaze in Pakuranga A Pakuranga home has been destroyed after a fire that ripped through the propert at the weekend. A neighbour on Archmillen Avenue said she called emergency services after smelling smoke and seeing flames through the house’s window. She says by the time she got to the top of the communal driveway, the house was engulfed in flames. Four fire appliances responded to the incident. She says loud noises could be heard as the

presented its opening statement to the court. Crown prosecutor Mark Williams told the court Tai’s actions showed intent – no matter how briefly. “Mr Tai knew what he wanted to do. He loaded the firearm, disengaged the safety catch and he deliberately pulled the trigger with the clear intention to kill her or, at the very least, injure her.” Mr Williams said the relationship between Tai and Ms Koroheke was short, but “characterised by violence.” “That violence manifested itself with fatal consequences.”

He told the court Tai’s attitude towards Ms Koroheke “was one of control and suspicion. Chozyn had told friends that Tai had threatened to shoot her – and on one occasion, had pointed a gun at her.” The Crown alleges Tai also stabbed Ms Koroheke in the thigh with a knife on one occasion. “It was a relationship characterised by frequent violence and controlling behaviour at the hands of Tai.” Defence lawyer for Tai, Peter Kaye urged the jury to put their emotions aside and judge the case dispassionately. “We all know we’re here because a 22-year-old young woman has died. We can never bring her back…. equally, another 22-year-old in Mr Tai...is charged with the most serious criminal offence that our criminal law knows – murder. “Quite a sobering thought at the age of 22 for both of them isn’t it?” He asked the jurors to look at the word murder in documents as a “two sided mirror”, and also see the word manslaughter. “There’s no argument about the issue or whether it caused death. You cannot find him not guilty. It’s either guilty of murder or manslaughter,” said Mr Kaye.

One witness, who described her friendship with Ms Koroheke as “very close” and “like sisters” said the relationship between the defendant and victim was “a bit rocky, but it was clear they loved each other”. Samantha Douglas, who was in a relationship with Koroheke’s brother and lived with Tai and Koroheke at the address on Pakuranga Rd, said the pair argued frequently – and it got worse in the week leading up to the victim’s death. Douglas told the court the relationship between the two “got bad quick” and said she had taken Koroheke to hospital on two occasions – the first time because Tai had “smacked her [in the head] with a rock” which she estimated to be around 10cm in diameter. She said the day of the incident had been quieter than usual because Tai had been ignoring the victim. That afternoon, Tai had brought a double-barrelled shotgun into the house and was “showing it off,” the court heard. Ms Douglas was unimpressed. The victim and defendant allegedly argued later that day when Tai asked Koroheke for petrol money and she refused, saying: “he hasn’t talked to me all day, why should I help him?”

Douglas told the court she had witnessed Tai packing up his car. Tai reversed out only to come back down the driveway, where Ms Koroheke went out to see why the defendant had returned. She then ran back inside, saying “he’s got a shotgun”. Douglas told the court she, Koroheke and Koroheke’s brother Nacyn took cover in Douglas and Nacyn’s bedroom. She says it was a matter of seconds between Tai pushing the door to the bedroom open with the shotgun and Koroheke being shot. The court heard that Tai allegedly hit Koroheke in the head with the shotgun and said “You f*****g b**ch, before jabbing Koroheke in the stomach with the gun and pulling the trigger. Under examination from Williams, Douglas recounted how Koroheke held her right hip, looked at her [Douglas] and collapsed into her brother’s arms after being shot. Douglas said Tai and Nacyn then yelled out at her to call an ambulance. She then ran to a neighbour’s house to use a telephone. She said immediately after shooting Koroheke, Tai began crying and repeating “I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” The trial has been set down for four weeks.

ast week they were in Coventry, England, meeting Rotarians and this week Rotary International (RI) President Ian Riseley and his Kiwi wife Juliet are in this neck of the woods meeting influential leaders. Every since Mr Riseley took on the mantle of president RI, a humanitarian service organisation that represents 1.2m Rotarians worldwide, they have criss-crossed the globe meeting members of Rotary Clubs in Romania, Cyprus, Israel, Santa Barbara, Vancouver, Lebanon, Sidney, Italy and India. His wife Juliet, also past district governor, and he are both enthused about addressing 253 Rotary President-elects on a twoday training programme organised by Rotary District at the Waipuna Hotel and Conference Centre on the weekend. They passionately talk about the environmental initiatives that Rotary Clubs the world over have taken up with a vengeance. “Protecting the environment and curbing climate change are essential to Rotary’s goal of sustainable service,” they say. “My request of planting one tree per Rotarian, which would amount to 1.2 million new trees in the world is being followed enthusiastically,” says Mr Riseley who lives

He talks of the Rotary Peace Forests in Israel and in Iceland. “In Romania, the government heard about the initiative and has offered to donate 1.2m trees saying ‘we lack the resources to plant them, so are happy for Rotarians to plant them’.” A member of the Rotary Club of Sandringham, Victoria, Mr Riseley is a chartered accountant and principal of Ian Riseley and Co, a firm he established in 1976. However, during his stint as President he is now located at Evanston, Chicago, the headquarters of Rotary International. At the Friday evening dinner, he addressed around 300 Rotarians on the Rotary theme of ‘making a

difference’ and urged everyone to contribute to Rotary Foundation. Mr Riseley quoted Bill Boyd, only the second New Zealander to hold the post of World President of RI, saying: “We will never bring about a perfect world, but we can try.” He also acknowledged Rotarians Stuart and Vivian Searle, as he inducted Stuart, a Rotary Past District Governor and his wife Vivian to the Arch Klumph Society. Named after the sixth president of Rotary, the Arch Klumph Society recognises the Rotary Foundations’ highest tier of donors—those who have contributed $250,000 or more during their lifetime. “And luckily their children haven’t objected to it,” he said light-heartedly. The Riseleys are also major donors and Bequest Society members of the Rotary Foundation.

While community papers continue to hold a place in our households, daily newspapers have suffered - that was 10 years ago.” Local newspapers remain strong worldwide as communities become more diverse. “When we started the Times in 1972, it was a time of huge change and we have been for all of those years the recorder of our local history as it happened,” Mrs Neben said. “Without the local paper, who will take up the mantle of journal of record? As long as we have our support from the readers, advertisers, local council and the many other groups in our community, we will continue to serve. “In December we bought back a minority shareholding from Fairfax so we could be a true locally-owned and operated newspaper of which I am truly proud.”

The announcement made recentlythat Fairfax is closing 28 of its community and rural newspapers is a sad day for the free press. Many of the newspapers they are closing around the country were purchased as thriving locally-owned publications serving unique communities. he third annual Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car Show on Sunday was a “fantastic success”, says car show chairman Rev Dr Richard Waugh. “We had a record 837 cars and some motorcycles displayed, with crowd estimates between 7000 to 9000 people, assisted by more than 100 volunteers, and with all donations going to the good work of the Howick Historical Village,” he said. Car display numbers and public attending were up about 33 per cent on the previous year’s record attendance. The ambience of the treelined avenues at Lloyd Elsmore Park and the adjacent Howick Historical Village all made for a very special experience, he said. “We are always indebted to the many car clubs and car owners for their wonderful efforts preparing their magnificent cars for display,” Rev Waugh said. The car show would not be possible without the major sponsorship support from How-

BBQ sausages put to good use With the Botany Summer BBQ being a wash out in February due to incessant rains, Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross was left with quite a lot of food on his hands. He tried to reschedule the community BBQ event that he annually hosts with kids rides to go with the BBQ cooked by Highbrook Rotary Club. “We tried to reschedule it but the popularity of Flat Bush Hall meant that we couldn’t find a suitable date

until April. That’s too late to run a Summer BBQ, so we decided not to proceed,” he says. “It left us with the question of what to do with hundreds of sausages from the BBQ.” A large number were donated to Highbrook Rotary for their annual Fun Run. And last week, he donated the remaining sausages to the Breakfast Club charity, run by Flat Bush local Steve Farrelly.

The Breakfast Club puts all its efforts towards supporting children in need. “Each year our BBQ is about providing a free family event for locals to enjoy. “Although we couldn’t reschedule the date this year, I’m pleased we have been able to help children through Steve and the Breakfast Club,” he says. ➤➤Steve can be contacted on 021 906 734 or go to our website www. breakfastclub.org.nz

ith a cluster of summer events happening on the weekends, it seems like everyone is in a hurry to make the most of the sun shining before a change of seasons. Providing a platform for community organisations to showcase the services they offer was the Botany Community Day on the weekend at the Botany Town Centre. Citizen’s Advice Bureau, No 40 (Howick) Squadron, Air Training Corps, Howick Local Board, BotanyLife Community Church, St John, Fire Brigade, Howick Lions were some of the community organisations reaching out to the public and explaining what they do. arly Connections had one important goal when it first opened - to know each child and family by name.

Eight months on and the beautiful Beachlands childcare centre has become the home away from home for dozens of little ones. Their families are welcomed into the centre and encouraged to be part of the village that will help them grow and develop. Owners Sarah Harford and Vicki Toussaint say the centre was always intended to be a reflection of the close-knit Beachlands community and what’s important to them. “The feedback we are getting is that the centre feels like a home away from home for the children, and it’s great to see that we are achieving what we set out to do,” Sarah says. The venture originally started as Connections in the Home – a home-based childcare service focussed on helping children confidently engage in play, exploration and relationship-building in the home environment.

However when a growing number of families in the Pohutakawa Coast started looking to them for childcare, Vicki and Sarah were determined to build a centre based around in-home philosophies. “Children feel most comfortable at home, and when children feel comfortable they explore and learn. This is why making this centre feel like home is so important.” Sarah says. Sarah says it’s mostly the input from local families and the community that give the centre its homely feel. A community notice board allows parents to market their small businesses, families have started bringing

in vegetables to give away and they’ve partnered with Te Puru gymnastics to take the older children on weekly trips. Sarah says the biggest focus for them now is to continue developing with the children. New activities and room layouts are just some of many small changes the pair has introduced to ensure they are catering for the various ages and stages of the children. “We want the children to get the best start here and we want to support their needs and grow their passions.” But there are a few things she says that will always remain the same – keeping the centre small, delicious meals cooked onsite, and passionate educators. Council acknowledge that since 2010 Auckland has grown by 218,000 and that in 30 years a further 720,000 will be living in Auckland. Council also state that traffic congestion costs $1-2 billion per year in lost productivity – an issue highlighted by Bonney’s transport in the news 01/03/18. Traffic woes also impact negatively on our mental health. Social media is awash with complaints about transport times. South Auckland has been allowed to grow, with no new transportation infrastructure developed. We are now grid-locked during rush hours and this extends into the day, even weekends! My trip from Hunua to Mangere is a 45 minute drive, but takes two to three hours on workdays. Unacceptable! All our main arterial routes; Great South Road, Southern Motorway Drury to Papakura, Mill Road, Porchester Road, State Highway 22, Puhinui Road to Airport to name some, are single-laned! Council have planned very poorly by allowing development without first putting in infrastructure. It is time for the people of South Auckland to be heard. We deserve better. Council need to stop building and signing permits until infra-

structure is in place. This needs to be a mix of roading and public transport. Council talk of tolls on main arterial routes to deter users. How then do they expect people to travel to work, education, and leisure? If council do not want us on the road, then public transport needs to be markedly upgraded first. The train only goes in a straight line North/South. There is inadequate carparking at park and rides resulting in local streets being clogged all day. Buses do not go frequently enough to then pick up passengers (from the rail stations) and commute them around the local area. I encourage everyone to feedback on the 10 year budget and Auckland Plan 2050. Bikes on buses

Auckland Council should take a lesson from Honoulu and other cities in the USA. Fit bike racks onto the front of buses, and stop installing cycleways on busy roads. Cyclist cycles on residential streets to bus route from home, boards the bus and then alights first at stop, retrieves bike and completes journey to work or

Dumping has to stop

Garden waste that was dumped in Gills Road Pigeon Mountain Car Park on Saturday, February 24. A friend saw someone in a small truck (with sides) at around 12pm-1pm that was loitering in that area. The truck was loaded with large white bags which were tied at the tops. He felt a bit curious about what this person was up to but did not stop to observe. The waste looks like Yucca or similar soft wood which has been shredded. I live opposite this area and it is a place that people leave

rubbish and old household whiteware often, obviously when they do not want to pay to dispose of their unwanted rubbish. I would appreciate that this could be brought to the attention of the readers who may have an idea of someone that could have been involved in this unworthy behaviour. he latest monthly QV House Price Index shows nationwide residential property values for February increased 6.5 per cent over the past year and 1.2 per cent over the past three months. The nationwide average value is now $672,645. When adjusted for inflation the nationwide annual increase drops slightly to 4.9 per cent. Meanwhile, residential property value growth across the Auckland Region increased slightly by 1.0 per cent year on year which is the slowest annual rate since August 2017. Values also ticked up slightly by 0.8 per cent over the past quarter. The average value for the Auckland Region is now $1,053,948. When adjusted for inflation, values dropped 0.6 per cent over the past year. QV national spokesperson Andrea Rush said, “Values continue to rise faster in Wellington, Dunedin and many regional centres than in Auckland. The Hamilton and Tauranga markets have picked up in February after a sluggish start to the year while the Hawkes Bay continues to see some of the strongest value growth in the North Island. “Christchurch is the only main centre to see values drop over the past year, while many regional

areas of the South Island continue to see values rise including Nelson and Tasman, Central Otago and the MacKenzie District as well as Southland and Invercargill. “Low interest rates and the easing in the LVR restrictions has seen many more first home buyers active in areas where they can still afford to enter the market, while some investors also appear to be becoming more active now they need a slightly lower deposit.”

The Auckland market remains mixed with some areas seeing values continuing to rise and others seeing values drop slightly. The former Auckland City Council suburbs rose 1.2 per cent year on year but were down 0.2 per cent over the past three months and the average value there is now $1,239,086. Waitakere values were down 0.8 per cent year on year but they increased by 0.5 per cent over the past three months. The average value there is now $825,362; North Shore values rose 2.9 per cent in the year to February and 1.5 per cent over the past three months; Manukau was flat at 0.0 per cent change year on year, but values rose 1.3 per cent over

the past three months; Papakura values rose 2.3 per cent year on year and 1.5 per cent over the past three months and the average value there has now topped $700,000 and is sitting at $702,318; Franklin values also rose 1.6 per cent year on year and Rodney values were also up 1.5 per cent year on year. QV Auckland senior consultant, James Steele said, “The market remains sluggish with values holding for the most part, with a lack of good quality listings on the market and lower than normal sales volumes for this time of year. First home buyers remain active in the market and there is good demand for entry level housing stock. However, many are still finding it difficult to get the finance to purchase, with prices remaining high. “Properties that are not well presented, have outstanding maintenance or are damp or shaded for example are sitting on the market for longer. This is a change to when the market was very hot and everything was selling quickly.” Buyers appear to be more discerning and people are choosing not to sell as they are not guaranteed of being able to find anything else desirable in this market.

For example, different companies might make wall panels, or roof pieces or bathroom pods, or any of the elements that go into a building.” Mark Farmer, author of the game-changing United Kingdom report ‘Modernise or Die’ believed offsite is an important part of the KiwiBuild solution. His experience in the UK shows how government officials have taken on board the advice he provided in his 2016 report where he showed how 25 per cent of the British construction industry would be gone in the next 10 years as workers retired. A year after the Farmer Review, the British Government committed to prioritising offsite building methods for several departments including transport, health, education, justice and defence. Farmer is in New Zealand to discuss

He appeared at this week’s annual CoLab event in Auckland in partnership with the Industry Transformation Agenda, a programme to transform the entire building and construction sector led by BRANZ. PrefabNZ’s CoLab event explores ways to reduce the road-blocks to innovation through: • Better bank finance to enable first-time home owners to access traditional bank mortgages for prefabricated homes, • Good offsite guide which clarifies the process around building consent and compliance pathways to bring innovation to market, and • The Snug design competition to produce a range of pre-consented home patterns for smart compact one-bedroom dwellings for existing back-gardens – effectively ‘a home in my backyard’. Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford says: “CoLab is a golden opportunity to bring together some of the smartest brains and best entrepreneurs in construction.”

Instead of shipping in from abroad, a PrefabNZ ‘Capacity & Capability’ report demonstrates that Kiwi-based housing manufacturing firms and construction companies can deliver for KiwiBuild using off-site methods. Through using innovative building methods, PrefabNZ members say they could deliver around 7000 more homes each year from 2020. This would deliver 70 per cent of KiwiBuild’s target of 10,000 homes per year over 10 years. Manufacturers and builders surveyed by PrefabNZ say they are ready to reinvest around 8 per cent of revenue, and up to 20 per cent in some cases, to deliver KiwiBuild. “This is astonishing news,” PrefabNZ chief executive Pamela Bell said in a media statement. New Zealand housing manufacturers and builders are telling us that they are willing to forego some profit in the short term to deliver KiwiBuild. “This research is economic proof that our innovative construction industry does not

Bannister broke barrier A

world athletics giant has passed away with the recent death of Sir Roger Bannister at the age of 88. The tall, lanky doctor with the long loping stride sprinted away from pacemakers Chris Chataway and Chris Brasher to achieve what was deemed an impossible sub 4 minute mile at Oxford in 3m 59.4s on May 6, 1954. Up until then in had been a battle between the Englishman and gentlemanly Australian John Landy to become the first to do so. In one attempt by Landy in Australia, he blew his chance by stopping to pick up a fallen opponent but later reduced Bannister’s record to 3m 58s. That was the era of our own New Zealand hero Murray Halberg whose favourite distance was the mile before he won Olympic gold over 5000m at the 1960 Rome Olympics shortly before Peter Snell struck gold over 800m. Bannister never won an Olympic medal. But his 1954 British Commonwealth 1500m win over Landy in Vancouver was a classic when he swept past the Aussie’s right shoulder the moment Landy looked for him on his left. With Jack Lovelock (Berlin 1939), Snell (Tokyo 1964) and John Walker (Montreal 1976) becoming Olympics champions over 1500m, it was not surprising all

three New Zealanders would break world mile records. Snell broke the unbeaten Australian Herb Elliott’s 3m 54.5s by 0.1s at Wanganui’s Cook Gardens on January 27, 1962, and reduced it further to 3m 54.04s in Auckland on November 16, 1964. There was never any doubt that Tanzania’s Filbert Bayi and John Walker would be the male middle distance stars of the mid 1970s when they both broke American Jim Ryun’s world 1500m record at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth with gutsy front runner Bayi striking gold. With Bayi clocking a world record 3m 51s mile at Kingston, Jamaica, on May 17,1975, the race to become history’s first sub 3m 50s miler was on, just as it had been before Bannister cracked the 4m barrier 21 years earlier. It was Walker who did it that same year when running the last two laps solo to blitz the field at Gothenburg, Sweden, when I held his stop watch and called him the lap times. “How fast?” he asked when I ran across to him and showed him the stop watch in my shaking hand after he had finished. ‘Under 3 minutes 50 seconds,” I shouted. “Oh, my God?” he cried, clutching his head before throwing his arms in the air in ecstasy.

That race and his 3m 49.4s (10s faster than Bannister) provided the highlight chapter of my second book, Kiwis Can Fly. Walker’s time lasted almost four years before Sebastian Coe (3m 49s) lowered it on the fast Oslo, Norway, track in 1979. Coe lowered it further to 3m 48.53s and 3m 47.33s and in between Steve Ovett held the record at 3m 48.40s. But Steve Cram surpassed his fellow Englishmen when he ran a blistering 3m 46.32s at Oslo in 1985. That was 10 years after Walker, who was to become the first to run 100 sub 4-minute miles and the first 40-year-old to break a barrier Bannister had proved possible.
