he Arts out East Festival 2018 will highlight the culture and talent available in East Auckland.

Catering to all ages, a jampacked day of entertainment will begin at 10 am with a breath taking performance from the Edgewater Kapa Haka group.

The day will continue with drop-in workshops – where you can join in on a contemporary jewellery class with local artist Sarah Walker-Holt, or try your hand at traditional Chinese calligraphy and much more.

There will be dance troupes taking stage, with a range of performers available to entertain and even teach a move or two to try out while listening to headline act Alae playing in the theatre at 12.30pm.

There will some pop-up art events including the Fortune Cookie Cart and a site specific installation from Veronica Herber.

Coffee will be available on the day from the Uxbridge Café and for food; you can take your pick of food trucks serving hand-rolled sushi from The Temaki Truck or grab a refreshing soda and scoop of ice-cream from The Marilyn There’s something for

A construction company has been ordered to pay up more than $13 million to remedy massive and widespread leaky building defects at Botany Downs Secondary School.

The order was made in a High Court judgment against H Construction North Island Ltd – formerly Hawkins Construction North Island Ltd –

by Justice Downs.

The judgment notes the school opened in 2004 and has 1906 students and 118 teachers. Hawkins built the school’s buildings between 2003 and 2009.

The plaintiffs – the Minister of Education, the Secretary for Education and the school’s Board of Trustees – contend nine buildings leak because of a host of construction defects – and will cost more than $17m to repair. They argued Hawkins was liable in negligence to meet this cost.

“Hawkins accepts the buildings suffer what it refers

to as ‘issues’ and related poor workmanship,” the judgment says.

“But it submits they comply with the Building Code.

Hawkins contends its contractual relationship with the plaintiffs precludes liability in negligence in any event.

“Affirmative defences are advanced too including limitation defences under the Limitation Act 1950 and Building Act 2004, and contributory negligence.”

Justice Downs said in his summary that Hawkins is liable to pay the cost of remedying defects (specified in the 88 page judgment).

Hawkins must pay the plaintiffs $13,424,967.40 and GST on this sum.

“The sum is not small but Hawkins was paid approximately $28m to build the school,” Justice Downs says.

“Pupils and teachers have not had the benefit of healthy code-compliant buildings for eight years and the award reflects the amount necessary to repair the school.”

Lucky escape for boy after manhole scare A

n 11-year-old boy is lucky to be alive and relatively unscathed after falling down an uncovered manhole in Botany.

Dylan McKenzie was playing with friends at Logan Carr Reserve on Kilkenny Drive with a group of friends when he saw a sheet of plywood on the ground.

He picked it up with the aim of using it to make a hut with his friends; however he didn’t see the hole underneath.

“I didn’t know the manhole was there...then I fell 4.4 metres but didn’t break anything except my phone and I sprained my wrist,” says Dylan.

He recounts the events bravely now, but Dylan’s mother Paula McKenzie says the experience was traumatising for her son.

“He was actually really scared.

He was having a sleepover at a friend’s house...when they got back to the house they rung me and said ‘can you come and pick me up’?

“He was scared of going to sleep the next couple of nights because of the dark...you can imagine how dark it would have been down there with a tiny bit of light just up the top.”

warning tape around a nearby tree but he didn’t see it as he approached the plywood from the back of the tree.

Ms McKenzie says Auckland Council was “fantastic” upon learning of the incident, but told her they had no job references logged with the site and were not responsible for the tempo-

rary fix of plywood and warning tape – which begs the question, who was?

“Why didn’t they call the council and report it? Plywood is obviously not a solution.”

She says when Dylan initially told her about the fall, she took it with a grain of salt.

“I thought surely it can’t have been that deep but he took us to the park the next day and showed us and I just wanted to cry thinking ‘oh my god, you fell down that?!’”

Auckland Council has since retro-fitted the manhole Dylan fell down with a safety grille and replaced the cast iron lid on top.

In an email to Ms McKenzie, the council reassured her precautions had been put in place to prevent future incidents.

“The particular manhole in Logan Carr Reserve, Howick is in a secluded area under a large tree on the edge of the bushclad gully that flows through the reserve. The manhole is approximately 4.4m deep. A pipe 875mm diameter passes through the manhole and its outlet to the watercourse is 13m away in the bush.

“We do not know how the lid was removed, however our contractor discovered plywood over the opening and caution tape around the tree. The cast iron lid

has been re-installed and a safety grille fitted beneath the lid. Two more manholes on the large diameter pipes in the reserve will also be retrofitted with safety grilles.

“In 2013 and 2014 the council assessed its manhole assets through a specially developed risk profiling system which identified approximately 600 manholes for inspection. These were inspected, and many were found already to have been made safer by having more secure lids or safety grilles fitted, and 421 more across Auckland were fitted with these same safety treatments,” the email said.

Both Dylan and Mum are aware it could have been so much worse.

In October 2009, two-year-old Aisling Symes was found dead after falling down a stormwater drain in west Auckland a week after she was reported missing from her home.

While it’s a tough loss for Dylan losing his phone which he saved up his paper run money to buy his own cell phone, they’re in no doubt that he’s had a very lucky escape. ➤➤Auckland Council has a 24/7 call centre where missing or displaced manholes should be reported immediately. Call 301 0101.

Clevedon village residents will soon be able to connect to mains water and wastewater services. Watercare has recently reached an agreement with local landowners and developers to build and fund infrastructure for the village.

Construction of water and wastewater networks may begin at the end of the year and will include a water reservoir and wastewater pump stations.

Watercare commercial manager Carl Tucker says: “We expect the contract to be awarded mid-year with detailed design to be completed after this, and we anticipate connections to the network will be available early 2020.” Clevedon has been zoned for growth under the Unitary Plan. Water will be supplied by the Ardmore Water Treatment Plant on Creightons Road.

The wastewater network will be a vacuum system similar to Kawakawa Bay, with wastewater being transported via Papakura for treatment at the Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant.

It is anticipated that new properties within the village will connect to the network, says Mr Tucker.

Existing properties within Clevedon Village that are currently on private water supplies and on-site wastewater systems will also be able to connect to Watercare’s water and wastewater network. Costs are still to be determined. Watercare will be providing more information over the coming months as the details are ironed out. Tucker says the announcement is good news for residents and the environment as the township has a legacy issue with failing septic tanks and pollution of the environment.

Ruth’s book gifted to 3500 prisoners

New projects worth $54m

T

he first time Ruth Hammond, founder of the Classy Crafts in Howick, heard a voice calling her name out in the middle of the night, she was nervous. She looked beside her but found her husband fast asleep.

She pulled the duvet over her head, but the voice called three times.

Then a thought entered her mind, ‘Ruth I want you to get up and write.’

Unable to ignore it, she reluctantly got out of bed and started writing at 3am.

“You can’t argue with silence.

You don’t win. The writing wasn’t expressed the way I usually speak,” explains Ruth about the strange phenomena that started 30 years ago.

“The next morning I woke up and told my husband that something unusual happened.

I thought he would laugh at me but he was visibly moved when he read the inspirational verse.

“Over the following nine months I received 66 writings and noticed that my husband treasured them. He meticulously dated and numbered them. He thought it was something important and was mystified.”

“The writing came to an end after nine months and gave a lot of strength to my husband who was later diagnosed with cancer.”

After his death the writings were locked away in a cupboard for 28 years while Ruth got busy with teaching and then later began jewellery designing.

However in 2014, there was a life-changing moment when time stood still.

“I went to pick up my 44-yearold son Greg for lunch and found him dead in bed.”

But even as Ruth came to terms with his sudden and unexplained death, she found that there was

a certain peace and strength that never left her.

“I felt supported.

Something told me it was a heart attack though I had to wait for 10 months to get the coroner’s report confirming it.”

Ruth had a calling to resume writing.

In hindsight she thinks that if Greg hadn’t died, the beautifullypresented book entitled `soft whispers... small shouts... deep waters’ would have never happened.

On Mother’s Day her elder son gifted Ruth a coffee table book, ‘The Beautiful Gifting of Art’ by Merrilyn Jaquiery, one of New Zealand’s finest wildlife artists who at times wakes up in the middle of the night with bursts of inspiration to start painting.

He urged her to go and meet her.

The women shared their personal experiences and Merrilyn introduced her to a gifted media and graphic designer who had designed her book.

Ruth had 2000 books published of her personal conversations with God. “I repeatedly said, ‘What do I do with 2000 books?’”

“One day, the thought came into my mind, “I want you to give

them to prisoners.”

“Well, I didn’t know anyone remotely associated with prisons and wondered how I could possibly achieve what I believed I was being nudged to accomplish.”

Two weeks after the thought, a new minister to the church, a former chaplain at the Spring Hills Correction Facility, introduced Ruth to chaplains at prisons for women. They placed an order of 880 books.

She was also inspired to start writing another book, ‘Being with God’ which the regional NZ chaplains approved as a gift to prisoners. To date 3500 copies have been requested and distributed.

“It’s not as if I need to sit in a quiet place to write. At one time we had almost 14 people together for a Christmas lunch when the words just flowed.

“I don’t mince my words and neither does God,” she laughs. “I once tried to grammatically correct a sentence and I was firmly told to leave it the way it was.” ➤ Books available at Classy Crafts and online at www. softwhispersbook.co.nz

Goodman Property Trust (GMT), the stock exchange-listed company which owns Highbrook Business Park, has commenced two new industrial projects totalling $54.1 million.

Utilising almost four hectares of development land, the preleased facilities will add 19,467sq m of rentable area to the portfolio and generate over $3.3 million of annual income once completed.

The new commitments add to the large volume of work currently underway with the total value of these projects now $233m.

Goodman (NZ) Limited’s chief executive officer John Dakin said it continues the strong momentum of the last 18-24 months and further progresses the rapid build-out of our strategic land holdings.”

The projects include: ➤ A design-built warehouse facility of 14,050sq m for Australasian packaging specialist NCI at Savill Link in Otahuhu ➤ A 5417sq m warehouse expansion for national carrier and existing customer, Move Logistics at Highbrook Business Park.

Excluding land allocations, the two projects require additional investment of $39.5 million.

“Regional growth and the impact of online retailing is driving demand for well-located industrial and business space facilities across Auckland,” Dakin said.

“With portfolio occupancy of 99 per cent we are effectively at capacity.

“To alleviate the supply shortfall we are intensifying our development programme with a combination of build-tolease and design-built facilities.”

East gets taste of $28 billion transport plan ■ BY THERESE HENKIN

A

$28 billion transport investment to fix Auckland’s Transport has been unveiled and east Auckland has not been forgotten.

The AMETI Eastern Busway and a transport corridor connecting the airport with Botany are among those projects mentioned in the Auckland Transport Alignment Project (ATAP) package, which aims to transform our city.

However little is mentioned about the plans for the East West Link and only one stage of the Mill Road transport corridor has been confirmed.

Transport Minister Phil Twyford says the $28b plan will “help ease the awful congestion that has been caused by a decade of under-investment”.

Botany MP and National transport spokesperson Jami-Lee Ross says the ATAP announcement contains “very little that is new” and, in effect, is a reannouncement of most of what the former National Government was doing.

“The key differences are that there is a new tax being put in place, trams are planned for Dominion Road, East West Link has been canned in its present form, and Mill Road is only a halfway-house option compared to what we would have been doing,” he says.

“On Mill Road specifically, National was going to designate that corridor as a four lane state highway and build it without the need for ratepayer contributions. That is a saving of $500million for the council.”

Ross says he is pleased that the Eastern Busway is a continued priority for Auckland, despite being dropped down the list in favour of trams on Dominion Road.

He says the new link between the airport and Botany has always been a long term project. “When the Manukau City Council built Te Irirangi Drive it was made deliberately wide to accommodation a busway in the future.”

Auckland Transport’s chief infrastructure officer Greg Edmonds says the release of ATAP brings more clarity for the public about how AMETI Eastern Busway sits within the strategic network and future plans for connecting Botany with Puhinui.

AMETI Eastern Busway was identified as a long planned critical project that expands Auckland’s rapid transit network from Panmure to Botany.

Some $1.2 billion has been allocated to the project which will start with construction of the Panmure to Pakuranga stage in late 2018.

AMETI Eastern Busway will introduce 7km of dedicated, congestion-free busway between Botany and Panmure.

This will mean less than 40 minutes by bus and train between Botany and Britomart in peak hour when the busway is operational in 2026.

The project will also include a Reeve’s Road Flyover, 7km of cycling lanes and walkways, two new bridges across the Tamaki River and Pakuranga Creek and three new stations and interchanges.

The report also indicates future plans to continue rapid transport from Botany to the Airport. While the highest priority section of this corridor is between the airport and a major new interchange at Puhinui train station, connecting this corridor with Botany Town Centre is a key future priority, the report states.

“This signifies further progress towards bringing transformational transport infrastructure, better travel choice and improved services for the people of South East Auckland,” Edmonds says.

Little is said about the East West Link, only that the investment for this has been reduced by about $950 million from the National government’s original plans.

The Mill Road corridor has been split into two phases, with only one stage considered an immediate priority leaving the corridor largely incomplete.

The proposed Mill Road corridor was to provide an additional strategic northsouth corridor for south Auckland, connecting Manukau and Drury to the east of the Southern Motorway.

However Hunua MP Andrew Bayly says only completing the first phase of the project means the people of Pukekohe, Waiuku, Karaka, and Drury will face continued delays and congestion.

“Today the Government has scrapped most of that project by only promising to follow through on the first stage of the northern section – from Manukau to Alfriston School. This drop off point is a road to nowhere,” says Bayly.

“There will now be a yawning transport gap between Papakura and the Stevenson’s Development at Drury. By disbanding the proposal to create an alternative four-lane expressway, it means that the announcement will have no real effect on reducing traffic congestion.”

Record set for brave Ella

We reprint excerpts of the winning essay read at Anzac Day Memorial Service on Wednesday last week.

Oh, the rains One to kill on impact The other a creeping barrage of droplets But is it water at all For water is triumphant Roaring like a crowd Not the final blow or slow sinking feeling Not the thick, crumby sludge it tows Now it is the ship floater A salty brine of widow’s tear A disease that hides and lingers Upon soldier’s breath A watery, bitter aftertaste The rains Oh, the rains At the outbreak of World War One, New Zealand marched off enthusiastically to a war that was supposed to be finished by Christmas. 1918 was in stark contrast to this ideal, and while Gallipoli and the battles that followed forged our identity as a nation, I think that the war’s end also changed our outlook. We were no longer the innocent, young nation we had been, but had grown older in a way. We had lost this innocence, we had now experienced war’s cost.

Today, 100 years on, is a time of remembrance. A time to remember the pain, the grief, the scars, the stories, the fight and the human sacrifice. A time to remember the rains, the ships, the widows, and the bitter aftertaste- all but items in a collection that was 1918.

Lest we forget.

M

y heart is exploding and I am so nervous, says Kat Yearbury as she gets ready to board a flight on Thursday evening to St Louis, Missouri for a medical procedure that will change her daughter Ella’s life forever.

Apart from feeling breathless there are so many emotions going through her mind as she talks to the Times hours before she flies to the US. She is overwhelmed.

It’s been a year of rigorous fundraising with practically one or two events a month to raise $150,000 required for the selective surgery and other costs involved.

Born premature at 25 weeks, Ella was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus and epilepsy. Doctors said that she would never walk or talk.

But Ella beat the odds, despite undergoing 13 surgeries and a grim prognosis.

Last year it was a meeting with an American paediatric neurosurgeon Dr TS Parks who visited Auckland that changed things for Ella’s family. Dr Parks has done several spinal cord surgeries enabling kids with cerebral palsy to walk independently for the first time in their lives.

ing funds for the surgery that comes at a cost. And while the entire community along with good-hearted Samaritans in New Zealand whole-heartedly supported her, she soon found that she couldn’t get travel insurance for Ella due to her condition.

They were required to fly a specialist doctor and a special paediatric nurse to take care of Ella in case of an incident.

Kay says she is grateful for people’s generosity of spirit as they have done everything from hosting a charity night where they auctioned music superstar Ed Sheeran’s guitar and fundraised $30,000 to baking sales, movie nights, garage sales, fun runs, quiz nights, and even breaking the Guinness World Record for the maximum number of fairies in one place.

They managed to smash the record by having 928 fairies at the Fairy steps 4 Ella, #IBelieveInFairies event— 57 more than the current record held by St Giles Hospice in England which was 871 fairies.

“I was so touched when some of the kids even emptied their piggy banks and one of them did a stand-up show at 50 cents a ticket to raise money for Ella,” she says.

While Kat was thrilled to reach the set target of $150,000, unfortunately the airline sponsorship fell through.

Bryre Eason, an education support worker in east Auckland who is very close to the family, says that the family now needs money to get home after the surgery and for months of physiotherapy.

A big support to the family,

Bryre occasionally has Ella over to her place just to give the family some respite.

“She has never stayed overnight at anyone’s home and when she had a sleepover at our place her mum couldn’t believe it,” says Bryre, who first met Ella at GlowKids, a charitable trust supporting children with special needs.

Bryre was also recently involved with another fundraiser for Ella at the Highland Park Community Centre that had three mediums do psychic readings for the audience.

Lest we forget Last week, New Zealanders around the country gathered to remember those who sacrificed their lives in its defence.

We had two moving services in Howick on Stockade Hill, and I was privileged to lay a wreath in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Every nation has its opportunities to come together and consider its founding principles, its vision for the future, and the values that guide it. For New Zealanders, Anzac Day is such a time.

The World Wars changed the world at a cultural and societal level. It is hard to talk about high ideals when we consider the dead, wounded, and broken men who returned from war, and the families and communities ravaged by grief left to pick up the pieces.

But the Anzacs did not die or suffer in vain. They fought perhaps at the most basic level, for their families and loved ones.

They fought for justice and truth.

They fought against the tyranny of those who wished to dictate the lives and freedoms of men and women around the world.

By giving their lives in service, the Anzacs upheld democracy and human dignity. The freedoms and duties of our society are thus a heavy mantle weaved by the deeds and heroism of the Anzacs.

Anzac Day is more than just recording the actions of soldiers 100 years ago. It is about asking ourselves: given this inheritance, what do we have to do?

Anzac Day is a tradition of freedom informed by truth and what is just; the willingness to do the right thing no matter the cost irrespective of fashion or contemporary whim.

This is the firm foundation of our national identity, and this is the reason why we keep coming back, every year, to remember the Anzacs.

Anzac Day is a challenge: to live our lives with duty, courage, and selflessness, so that by the grace of God 100 years from now, our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will look back on our time and see us as men and women worthy to be called children of the Anzacs.

e’s a good mechanic. The last time seasoned politician and former Speaker of the House David Carter visited east Auckland he not only campaigned for the then aspiring National Party candidate for Pakuranga Simeon Brown but also fixed his wife Rebecca’s car which had broken down.

“Well, I am a farmer at heart. I should know how to fix things,” Mr Carter told a SuperBlues (60+ National at heart) meeting hosted

by Pakuranga MP Mr Brown. The senior politician with a passion for agriculture touched on a range of topics including the time the government got rid of supplementary income and tax support for the farming community, which ironically contributed towards New Zealand lamb being a premium product all over the world.

“Prior to that New Zealand meat was underpriced but the shift helped the farming community to relook at the way they worked and reposition lamb in the export market,” said Mr Carter who hails from a family involved in politics for many decades.

For someone who loved his job as Minister of Agriculture, Biosecurity and Forestry, Mr Carter admits he was taken aback when he was called on by former Prime Minister John Key and asked ‘what about being the Speaker of the House’.

And while he wasn’t too keen, he soon realised that saying no to the Prime Minister would put an end to any other chances of career advance-

ment. “I was nervous as hell when I started. It was the greatest challenge to be apolitical and divorce myself completely from the National Party,” said Mr Carter who now admits that being Speaker of the House was one of the best experiences of his life.

“It is a very isolating position and it’s important to have the respect of all parties.”

He clearly remembers the times he threw 17 people out and had to even ask his former boss Mr Key to leave the chamber.

“He was all wound up at question time and a bit of it was deliberate, I suspect.

“Mr Key was being quite abusive.

So I had to make a call. It is important to have discipline. When the speaker rises to his feet, everyone’s microphones get cut off.

“I think that was the time the Labour Party finally saw me as being fair and giving every member of the Parliament a fair go,” said Mr Carter When asked if it is difficult to watch his successor perform in a very different style and how he copes with the inconsistency of decisions, he said: “You just got to suck it up.”

The postie who happened to be there, called emergency services and the neighbour picked up the severed thumb and finger and put them in a wet cloth inside a plastic bag, placing it on ice in a chillybin.

A team headed by Stanley spent 14 hours in two surgeries, reconnecting the bones, nerves, blood vessels tendons and skin of the thumb and finger. It was a successful surgery and the 62-year-old Mr Mulholland recovered well, once the bones healed.

Stanley who specialises in skin cancer treatment and cosmetic surgery has presented and published at a number of international meetings. He has also been the Scientific Convenor of the New Zealand Plastic Surgical Scientific meetings.

The caring plastic surgeon has been appointed as an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery within the Faculty of Medical and Health Science at the University of Auckland.

Warning of ‘disastrous impact’ of tax changes

roperty Institute of New Zealand chief executive Ashley Church is warning of ‘an exodus’ of landlords from the property market in the wake of Government proposals to change the tax treatment of property investment and says that plans to ‘ring fence’ property tax losses will have a disastrous impact on the market and will significantly worsen the shortage of rental accommodation in our largest cities.

Mr Church’s comments follow the release of an issues paper outlining a proposal to change the rules around the tax deductibility of losses associated with the ownership of rental properties.

The effect of the changes would be that the costs associated with owning a rental property (interest, rates, insurance, maintenance, etc) could no longer be offset against other income as has been the case for many decades.

Instead, these losses would be ‘ring fenced’ and could only be applied to profits made on the property against which the costs were incurred.

The Government is claiming that the moves are “an effort to level the playing field between speculators, investors and home buyers” but Mr Church says this is nonsense and shows a continuing misunderstanding of the difference between ‘speculation’ and ‘property investment’.

“This Government continues to have a blind spot when defining these terms.

‘Speculators’ are people who are in and out of the market very quickly – sometimes within just a few weeks or months – and who seek to make money through renovations or quick capital gain.

Mr Church says that treating the two in the same way demonstrates an unacceptable ignorance of how the property market works and says that ringfencing tax losses will be the ‘final straw’ for many investors and will largely have the effect of pushing them out of the market – further compounding an already serious rental crisis.

In encouraging feedback on the proposed changes Revenue Minister Stuart Nash has said that the “persistent tax losses” that many property investors declare on their investments indicate that they rely on capital gains to make a profit.

However, Mr Church says this is simply another example of ‘woolly thinking’ and a lack of experience by the new Government.

“Yes, most investors make a loss on the day-to-day operation of their property in the early years – but properties do eventually become profitable at which time tax is paid on that profit just like any other business activity.

early on is offset by an eventual return to the taxman later on – and without the ability to claim those early losses many investors would abandon the market, or wouldn’t enter it in the first place”.

Mr Church says that this would have a devastating effect on the rental property market.

Mr Nash also says that “In conjunction with the recently announced extension to the bright-line test, ring-fencing losses from rental properties would make property speculation less attractive and level the playing field between property investors and home buyers.

Mr Church disagrees and notes that the extension of the ‘Bright Line’ test to 5 years already means that speculators – the group the Government claims to be targeting – will now be paying their fair share of tax but says that ‘further moves will punish a group who are performing a public good’.

The coveted Jetstar Super Swim Squad brought together 36 youngsters from around New Zealand for the annual camp. The swimmers qualified for a place in the squad by winning their age group in the 200m OceanKids event at one of six qualifying events in the Banana Boat New Zealand Ocean Swim Series.

The youngsters were mentored by a stellar coaching line up headlined by three-time Olympian Dean Kent. Dean will be supported

by Olympic swimmer/canoeist Steven Ferguson, Commonwealth Games swimmers Laura Quilter and Ellen Quirke, and respected surf lifesaving swim coach Jack Gavin.

Robin Crowe, father of squad members Ella and Grace Crowe, says; “The Jetstar Super Swim Squad is a fantastic opportunity for children to be trained by top New Zealand swimmers and to develop long-lasting friendships with other children that they will swim with for years to come. All the kids have loved it, they have the biggest smiles on their faces and the coaches this year have been fantastic.”

The aim of the camp is to back New Zealand’s future swim stars by offering expert tuition to develop their technical skills and help them to build confidence by providing an opportunity to meet and talk with a range of high-performance athletes.

Welcome back to our Kiwi Ko A

t last, a Lydia Ko triumph to give heart to a country which has quickly grown to love its South Korean-born golfing sweetheart.

That she should achieve it a few days after her 21st birthday in the Mediheal Championship on the same tricky San Francisco course she had won two Swinging Skirts tournaments made it more special. Especially so when coming almost two years since enjoying her last victory when she was world No 1.

A lot of water has passed under the bridge since, along with coaches and caddies and a different set of clubs as she sought perfection in a sport that is notorious for it treacherous twists.

Many experts with far greater expertise than me have offered reasons why Ko’s game dismantled to such an extent she dropped in the rankings to No 18.

Certainly many of us have wondered, beyond understanding her need to improve the length of her drive, why she wanted to change a wheel that had won her professional tournaments since she was 14.

Some, like highly-rated American coach David Leadbetter, claimed it was parental control that took her away from him when she enjoyed so

much success.

While the length of her drive did increase, it remained far short of the biggest hitters on the LPGA circuit.

And her putting stroke didn’t appear as fluent as it had been. Which could have had a lot to do with decreasing confidence.

Many years ago I read an article relating to a group of highlyrespected psychologists who came to the conclusion that perfectionists were under-achievers.

Having achieved so much at such a tender age, only a fool would claim lovely Lydia is an under-achiever.

However the theory could partially explain her losing her magic touch over the past few years.

That she should regain her Midas touch in such spectacular fashion on the playoff 18th hole with an eagle against Aussie Minjee Lee’s

birdie was a magnificent achievement worthy of such a special sportswoman.

Hopefully this signals a bright new era in a women’s game that has grown immensely thanks to the injection of so many incredibly gifted young players who have been encouraged by Lydia’s precocious success.

Whereas she was one of a kind, now she is one of a half-dozen.

Hopefully this long-awaited latest victory will give her the confidence to regain Queen Bee status ahead of so many, mainly Asian, princesses.

That’s the egg on my face for singing the praises of the Warriors for their thrilling NRL win against the Dragons before the mighty Melbourne Storm thrashed them 50-20 after a short turnaround.

Full credit to the victors and champion coach Greg Bellamy for their near-perfect execution and making me eat humble pie. But I’m sticking to my belief the Warriors will bounce back and make the top eight playoffs.
