lympian Dick Quax has died after long and brave battle with cancer. Quax, 70, an Auckland councillor of Pakuranga, won a silver medal in the 5000m at Montreal in 1976. The Howick Local Board has expressed its sadness at the passing of Mr Quax, a Howick ward councillor. He died on Monday. Deputy chair Katrina Bungard said: “Dick has been a strong advocate for Howick during his time at Auckland Council and as councillor on the former Manukau City Council and he will certainly be missed. “Our thoughts and condolences are with his wife and family at this sad time.” Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross said: ‘My old friend and council running mate, Dick Quax has sadly lost his last race today (Monday). What a guy - Olympic hero, champion for his community, someone who put his blood and sweat into everything he did. “Dick was a politician with staunch views, but the conversations we had that stick in my mind the most are the many, many discussions we had about his boys Jacob and Theo as they grew up. RIP mate.” Sharon Stewart, Auckland Councillor for Howick expressed her deep sad-

Through hundreds of calls and text messages since the news broke, I know the people of Howick grieve with them at this difficult time and join me in thanking Dick for his service to our community over so many years. “I feel particularly lucky that I had the chance to serve alongside him in Auckland Council and can personally attest to his unwavering commitment to the job, even as he battled cancer. On bed rest from his home in Sunnyhills, he was instrumental in the repairs to the Rotary Walkway being completed ahead of schedule earlier this year and was determined to ensure the people of Howick were represented even through his illness. “I will miss his friendship and counsel dearly. Howick has lost one of its best today.” Rev Richard Waugh worked with Mr Quax for a time. “Dick was always a focussed person. He brought many

Dick Quax was a straight talking character whose Dutch stubborness and determination in the 1970s led New Zealand distance runners back to the glory days of Murray Halberg and Peter Snell a decade earlier. Coming to this country with his parents as a six-year-old, Quax developed into a brave, stylish runner who claimed a silver medal at the 1970 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games 1500m behind 1968 Mexico City Olympic champion Kip Keino. He was the only one with the

He was chair of Manukau City Council’s Community Safety Committee and lead the council’s ‘Safe City’ portfolio, this included representing the council’s Civil Defence responsibilities. Cr Quax was elected to Auckland Council in 2011 following a by-election to replace Jami-Lee Ross who resigned to become a Member of Parliament. He was re-elected, as a Howick ward councillor, alongside Cr Sharon Stewart, in 2013 and 2016. He was Chair of the Auckland Council’s Tenders and Procurement SubCommittee during the 2010-2013 term. Cr Quax was an unstinting advocate for Howick, Pakuranga and the eastern suburbs. He is known for his strong positions on high-density housing, public transportation and Auckland’s Unitary Plan. Cr Quax was also known as a steward of ratepayer funds, which was a particular focus in his 2011 maiden speech. A celebration of his life will be held at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell on Saturday at 1pm. The Times extends its deepest condolences to Mr Quax’s family.

learnings from his athletic success to local government and community service and I always admired his determination and passion. I enjoyed serving with him on the Pakuranga Community Board. He was one of our local heroes and characters and will be very much missed.” Mayor Phil Goff said: “We are all saddened to hear of the passing of Dick Quax today. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Roxanne and his children. “Dick served as a councillor, first on the Manukau City Council and then on the new Auckland Council, representing Howick Ward. “He was a passionate contributor in council debates, advocating strongly on behalf of his constituents. “On behalf of Auckland Council, we offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time,” said Mayor Goff. Councillor Dick Quax began his local government tenure in 2001 when he was elected to the Manukau City Council in the Pakuranga ward. He served three terms on the Manukau council, returning in 2004 to represent the new Botany-Clevedon ward. In the 2007 local body elections he ran for Mayor of Manukau City, losing his bid to Len Brown.

1976 Montreal Olympics when Quax claimed silver behind Lasse Viren’s repeat gold. That was also the Olympics in which Walker followed history’s first sub 3 minute 50 seconds mile of 3m 39.4s in 1975 with gold in the 1500m in the wake of Jack Lovelock (Berlin 1939) and Peter Snell (Tokyo 1964). Like Dixon, an emerging Walker was not spared Quax’s anger when, during an argument in 1973 he told him, “You won’t make a runner’s arsehole.” Yet that same year it was Quax who used his influence with European and British promoters to give Walker entry to the European circuit. Such was Walker’s progress that he and winner Filbert Bayi broke Jim Ryun’s world 1500m record at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games.

Father claims cop punched his son ■■By Therese Henkin

olice have defended the actions of a police officer who was seen to punch a teen in the ribs during an arrest. The arrest was filmed by onlookers and then posted to social media by the teen’s father Geoff Garnett following the incident in Highland Park on Sunday at around 3.30pm. Garnett said his 13-year-old son, Geoff Jr, had been aggressively arrested and believed it was for not wearing a helmet while riding his bike. He says the video prompted him to lay a formal complaint. Wendy Spiller, Area Commander
Counties Manukau East, says the officer is shown carrying out a tactic often used on suspects resisting arrest. Spiller says police had received a number of calls regarding the behaviour of a group of teenagers, with a member of the public telling police the boys were aggressive and trying to fight other people in the area. “Police staff quickly attended and tried to speak with the teenagers however the main aggressor, who was 13-years-old, quickly tried to get away from police on a pushbike,” she says. “[He] was biking into traffic and ran through a red light. The officer
managed to borrow another bike and following him for several minutes and caught up to him.” Spiller says it was at this point that people were filming on their cell phones and it can be seen in the video police trying to handcuff the teenager who was resisting arrest. The video shows the boy riding past on his bike, followed by a police officer, also on a bike. The police officer dismounts the bike and can be seen following the teen on foot. When the camera pans back to the boy, it appears he has been intercepted by a second police officer and pulled off his bike onto the ground where he is lying on his
stomach. The two police arrest and handcuff the teen. One police officer appears to struggle to get the teen’s left arm out from under his stomach during the arrest and is seen in the video to apparently punch the teen in the ribs as onlookers yell in protest. “The officer is shown carrying out a tactic that can be used to get an offender to release their arm so that we can put handcuffs on them,” Spiller says. Spiller says it is not uncommon for police to be filmed on cellphone cameras during an incident and have it posted on social media, but says often these videos don’t show
the full circumstances behind the callout. “More often than not these videos will only show a portion of what has happened and perhaps not surprisingly, rarely show the full circumstances, such as our staff being assaulted, abused or spat at,” she says. “Our staff come to work every day to keep the community safe,” Spiller says. On a daily basis our staff are subject to the most vile abuse in the course of their duties.” The teen is facing a number of charges including disorderly behaviour, failing to stop, dangerous driving and resisting police.

Pillars cherishes royal wedding gift ■■By Farida Master The timing couldn’t have been better. A phone call from the Prime Minister’s office asking if Pillars, a charity for children of prisoners, would accept a Royal wedding gift of 5k and if they could advise Prince Harry and Meghan Markle that their wedding gift had been accepted. It was testimony to years of hard work and dedication that had gone into building the charity. The royal couple had asked that in lieu of gifts, donations be made to chosen charity. The first phone call that Verna McFelin, Pillars founder and chief executive made, on receiving the good news was to Maxine Gay, Pillars’ acting northern regional manager. Maxine, based locally says: “It’s so wonderful that Verna founded Pillars 30 years ago and that Megan and Harry were married on the 30th anniversary of Pillars. Maxine says it is a big acknowledgement of the unique work that Pillars does to prevent intergenerational crime. “We start with an ambulance on the top instead of the bottom of the cliff.” She says that this year, Pillars which provides positive mentors for vulnerable children of prisoners - was one of the five finalists for the New Zealand Community Organisation of the Year. “Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is well aware of the work we do as is (Finance Minister) Grant Robertson, whose father was also incarcerated. “He is aware of how traumatic it can be for the family. “They are aware that there is a huge cohort of children of prisoners and how important it is to lift them from poverty and help raise their profile,” says the former trade unionist. “We’ve had 800 children in our programme and our one-onone mentors sign up for a minimum of 12 months involvement because our children have so many people in and out of their lives.” She says that a child of an incarcerated person is nine-anda-half times more likely to commit a crime. “There are around 25,000 children who are affected because they have parents in prison. Wacky wedding but it’ll be a very happy honeymoon Beachlands couple Steph Skilton and Brody Cleave had a wedding with a difference early today. They won a competition - WeddingTossers - with radio station The Edge giving them a free wedding and a honeymoon in Bora Bora in French Polynesia - but there was a tiny catch... the wedding proceedings were dictated on the flip of a coin. The couple had several losses with the coin flip shared on air each morning before the wedding. Instead of a horse and carriage, Steph’s arrival was by Zorb (with water); instead of a wedding dress she had to wear a grim reaper outfit; instead of confetti they got spaghetti. You get the picture. The wedding was in Matakana this morning as was broadcast live.
Skilton is a Football Fern and was based in New York with Syracuse University. Skilton has competed at the U17 World Cup (2010), U20 World Cup (2012), U20 World Cup (2014), along with the New Zealand Women’s National team in Cyprus, Brazil, America, and New Zealand. Cleave is a chiropractor in Howick. He has played sport has played at a high-level representing Auckland for rugby at a young age, New Zealand AFL and represented Oceania in the U18 Australian National Championships. In a recent Facebook post Skilton wrote wrote: “Can’t wait to marry you Brody Cleave - there’s not a day where I’m not smiling and laughing with you!”

App to fight stress and anxiety ■ BY FARIDA MASTER
E
xperiencing deep stress and anxiety at the separation of his parents was one of the triggers for Coby Molan to work on an app that could help teenagers like him. He says that at the age of 12 he got into trouble and was forced to live with his father. He was really scared because he had not heard good things about him. And while he gradually discovered that his dad was a great guy, he still suffers from anxiety that he had first experienced at a very young age. Using his personal story to connect with those suffering from mental health problems he, along with five other Year 13 students from Ormiston College, came up with a business idea for the Young Enterprise Scheme. Together they

formed a company called Canvas and worked on an app that provided stress-busting games, activities, music and meditation. The 21st century application is in partnership with Youthline which
will make people aware of its existence. It ties in with My Canvas campaign where Coby tells his story. “The application gives access to every single helpline in New Zealand. You can even use it as a journal
to record your thoughts,” says Sahil Chand, CEO of Canvas. “We worked on the idea along with our college therapist and counsellors from the neighbouring colleges. There are bubble-popping games with a soothing vibration on the fingertips. There is nothing like this in the market,” he says. CFO Coby says it is a perfect time to hit the market. “With so much mental health awareness, we hope to fight depression and stop it before it starts.” Canvas has also worked on a question mark campaign and has a barcode. Sales and marketing manager Vidur Ratna, says: “Scanning the barcode will take you to a website where there is a video promoting the app.” A plaque explains: “We are a business designed for the sole reason of relieving stress and anxiety through
the use of games and activities in our mobile application. We are named Canvas because everyone’s life is like a canvas we paint a part of it every day and sometimes the colours intertwine and we get stuck in the detail. “ Communications manager Aiden Wills-Kaio says that they plan to fully develop the app at the cost of $100,000. The team of Sahil Chand, Vidur Ratna, Ethan McCormick, Coby Molan, Aiden Wills-Kaio and Rico Pulley-Akavi say they plan to take it further through their university years and beyond. Young Enterprise Scheme has four tasks to compile a number of points to win Company of the Year. Canvas has already scored first place in east Auckland in Task One. They have already pitched their business proposal for Task Two and are confident of making it.

Tenants sour over centre plans ■ BY NICK KRAUSE AND THERESE HENKIN
Some tenants at Highland Park Shopping Centre are anxious as major redevelopment looms which will push them to relocate their businesses. Photo Nick Krause
A
t least two retailers at Highland Park Shopping Centre are seeking legal advice over redevelopment plans which will likely see them surrender their leases and leave the site. And one retailer is “a little bit sour” after investing $500,000 in his store in a major refit around Christmas 2016. Tenants were advised in February that the shopping centre was purchased by Foodstuffs North Island which intends to “completely redevelop that part of the centre comprising the specialty retail shops”. It intends to carry out a “comprehensive redevelopment in the short term which will, in time, lead to the development of Pak’n’Save”. “Where premises are required to be demolished as part of the redevelopment, NTC (The National Trading Company, part of Foodstuffs NI) will comply with its obligations under the terms of each individual lease,” a February 23 letter from managing agents Colliers said. “Once plans have been finalised, NTC intends to serve surrender notices to affected tenants in accordance with Section 12 of the relevant leases,” Colliers said. “We will keep you informed about when this is likely to occur as NTC’s plans are finalised.” One retailer, who asked not to be named, told the Times: “I am receiving legal advice as to my position at Highland Park. “Along with many tenants here, we are still in the dark as to the overall plans. I feel I know about as much as the management at present. I have no doubt the impact on the tenants and many, many loyal customers is going to be difficult to deal with.” Another retailer, who wished to remain anonymous, has had a business there for 10 years. “A lot of the community don’t want it (the redevelopment). Unfortunately, no-one wants this to happen.” He told the Times demolition is set for March 31. “Everything is so uncertain at the moment. We’ll have to relocate. Site options are very limited at the moment,” he said. “Overall, I understand it’s all business at the end of the day.

It’s our way of life here ... there’s ease of access. The main aim is to relocate to an equally convenient site. We are trying to find a way to inform our customers. “Admittedly, no-one is happy. We did $500,000 (of ) internal work (in the store) ... (we’re) a little bit sour.” Another retailer told a meeting of the Howick Local Board last week that “the bullying has started”. “Most of the small family businesses can’t afford to spend on big lawyers,” he said. “So we don’t know what the plan is. We’ve only had a short 15 minute meeting with Colliers.” He said there were no plans in place in which retailers could come back and secure space in the new complex. “That’s quite frustrating and disgusting ... what do the small family-owned businesses do?” “We support the local area, people from Highlands Retirement Village, Pakuranga Park Village – they all come to our shopping centre for small businesses, for small services. This is what we are. They have all been asking us “where are you guys going? Where do we go now?”. He said he was happy for Pak’n’Save to come in. “I am not against it. It’s good for competition but there should be some kind of support given to small businesses,” he said. “I don’t know whether it’s local government (which should step up) but somebody needs to be asking, ‘how are we going to protect small businesses?’ “The lease that everybody has signed says that we are protected and that we should be given space to grow our business while the renovation is going on. “There’s nothing. We have all been given a letter now that says
at the end of March 2019, we all have to be out.” He asked the local board how it could support or guide retailers. “My lease expires in 2024. They’ve told us there will be no compensation and people have spent a few thousands of dollars on renovations,” he said. “We have invested so much - I had to spend $25,000 on renovations such as repainting, re-carpeting the store. It’s all down the drain now.” Antoinette Laird of Foodstuffs NZ has reiterated that Foodstuffs North Island does not take ownership of the site until the end of June. “So we believe that we’ve been doing as much as we can to keep tenants up to speed within the realms of what we’re practicably able to do. It’s a very big project and we have a number of people working with us who are experts in their field, like (commercial real estate company) Colliers.” She told the Times they would have a clearer picture of what they’re planning for the site later in June which could help address some of the uncertainty tenants and locals have expressed. “We realise Highland Park is a hub and meeting point for many and we have absolutely no intention of eroding that – in fact, we’re setting out to give this important location an awesome makeover, in addition to creating jobs and an enhanced shopping experience,” she said. “We have indicated that a March 1, 2019 exit date is possible with a potential building and refurbishment programme taking approximately two years from that date, however, there are many contingencies we need to take into account as we look to develop and enhance the Highland Park shopping precinct.”
A Tribute to Dick Quax Instead of my usual column today, I wanted to give a few thoughts and reflections on our local Councillor Dick Quax, who passed away early on Monday morning. I have had the privilege of knowing Dick for a number of years, and have worked alongside him in my role as the local MP since September’s election. Dick was first and foremost a loving husband to his wife Roxanne, and dedicated father to his three children, Tania, Jacob, and Theo. He was a legendary Kiwi sportsman and a formidable advocate for Howick and for Auckland during his many years of public service. Dick Quax set a high standard of service wherever he focused

Poverty isn’t always easy
to see
Grandparents play an important role in their grandchildren’s lives and acknowledging it was Bucklands Beach Primary School that celebrated Grandparents Day on Monday. Grandparents were spoilt as they went back to school to have the time of their lives playing Snakes
and Ladder, doing paper cut outs, reading story books, talking about their family tree and trying to work out a 1920s puzzle. Some of the grandparents even class with their grandchild. Grandparents were also treated to afternoon tea as the school choir performed.

You can help end poverty. Poverty isn’t always easy to see in New Zealand, but it’s all around us—in our communities and our neighbourhoods, behind the doors of family homes, down alleyways at night, and even in the workplace. Sometimes it’s hidden because the thousands of people living in poverty don’t want you to see it, for fear of being judged or ostracised. Other times it’s because people choose not to see it—after all, how could a country as beautiful and prosperous as New Zealand have so many people living day-to-day in poverty, often not knowing where their next meal is coming from? But it’s everywhere, in every city and every town. And these people need your help—not only to survive, but to lift themselves out of poverty forever and live independent, happy lives. The Salvation Army helps over 120,000 Kiwis each year, working to lift them out of poverty by providing a range of short and long-term support and guidance to those in crisis. We’re committed to ending poverty in New Zealand, but we can’t do it alone. You can make a difference to those in need, because seeing poverty is not enough— we must act now.

Pyjamas round-up The Kidz First Jammies in June campaign has started off very strongly. The practice Creating Wellness is this year one of nine listed collection points for pyjamas. Already it has had a great response and it isn’t even June. “Between us and Pakuranga Chiropractic we have had about 40-50 new sets of pyjamas donated, and we expect much more,” says Dave Russell. The campaign asks the community to support Kidz First (Middlemore Hospital) by donating kids’ pyjamas and socks.

Reality show
Here’s to Howick’s ‘Heartbreak’ Kid ■■By Jon Rawlinson
T
he idea of sun, sand and sexy singles might seem quite remote as winter bites but that’s exactly what one former Howickian has been indulging in during filming of TVNZ’s new show, Heartbreak Island. While ‘what becomes of the broken hearted’ is yet to be ‘exposed’, the Times can reveal that at least one of the show’s co-hosts, Mark Dye, has made it back from location in Fiji intact! “The show went incredibly well,” he says.
“It really was the most fun job I have ever had. It has everything you want from a reality TV dating show: scandal, fun, revenge and of course, sex.” The 16 competitors may have eyes for one another but with $10,000 up for grabs, the show tests whether love will trump money. Mark says participants will turn more than just a few heads. “When I first saw them, I was shocked at how good looking they all were. I didn’t know we had people like that in New Zealand!” Along with his co-host, Matilda Rice,
Mark has helped corral participants through challenges designed to test their compatibility, with lust, love, laughter, tears and betrayal par for the course. But who will win out in this passionate game of love? It seems Mr Dye will never say... well, not yet anyway: “I can’t tell you who is going to win... TVNZ would kill me!” ➤➤From June 11, Heartbreak Island will run Monday-Wednesday nights from 7.30pm on TVNZ 2 with an uncut version from 9.30pm on Fridays (TVNZ 2 and DUKE).

Firefighter steps up big time Dannemora’s Andy Tomlinson is already looking at next year’s Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge having this month clocked the second fastest time to tackle the 1103 steps of Auckland’s 328m Sky Tower. The fastest firefighter and winner for his eighth year in a row was Josh Harrison of Mt Wellington Fire Brigade who set a new record for the event at 8 minutes and 11 seconds. Tomlinson, who spent 18 months at the Howick Station, completed the climb in 9m19s, while Gavin Mason of Queenstown Airport was third with time of 9m34s. Mason’s time was all the more remarkable given that last year he was diagnosed with the rare auto-immune disease Guillain–Barré syndrome and was barely able to climb one flight of stairs. The fastest woman up the tower was Ady McKenzie of Whangarei Fire Brigade with a time of 13m 12s. Contestants attack the stairs wearing up to 25kg of firefighting kit. Tomlinson, who is 195.5cm (6’5”) tall and weighs 95kg, admits the training regime was gruelling. He was hitting Proximity Apartments in Manukau which has a modest 15 floors. “Just to add to

queen’s birthday
A right royal celebration marked at Howick Historical Village tradition
Ahem...Happy birthday Ma’am
The Queen’s Birthday holiday is a moveable feast celebrating the birthday of Queen Elizabeth II who is not only Queen of Great Britain but also Queen of New Zealand. In New Zealand, the Queen’s Birthday holiday occurs on the first Monday in The Queen’s actual June. birthday is neither The Queen’s actual birth- in June nor October day is neither in June nor (as observed in October (as observed in Queensland) but in April. Stock photo Queensland) but in April. The sovereign’s birthday has been officially celebrated since 1748. It is a tradition that if a British monarch has a birthday that doesn’t fall in the UK summer months, they can have a second official birthday. This is because having a summer birthday means a higher chance of good weather during the Trooping the Colour parade for the monarch’s birthday. Elizabeth Alexandra Mary of the House of Windsor was born on April 21, 1926. In 1952, after the death of her father, King George VI, Elizabeth succeeded to the throne and was known thereafter as Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen is the monarch of 16 countries, the United Kingom and 15 commonwealth realms. ➤➤Source: officeholidays.com

any people woke a little bleary-eyed after sitting up into the early hours to watch the spectacular royal wedding of Prince Harry and his bride Meghan, now Duke and Duchess of Sussex. To continue with the feelgood mood and atmosphere, local people and visitors from far and wide, proceeded to the Howick Historical Village to enjoy the Great British Live Day Street Party on Sunday May 20. There was an incredible vibe at the village which was colourfully decorated with bunting and flags. Bright sunshine and mild autumn weather attracted a wide variety of visitors and the Street Party, games and Royal attractions were a great success. Visitors brought their picnic lunches and sat in groups around tables decorated in royal style, with special cakes and sandwiches temptingly placed on tiered cake stands, all within close proximity to a giant replica of Big Ben. The party goers were in royal company as Queen Victoria took tea and cakes on Eckford Homestead’s verandah overlooking her ‘subjects’. Her regal highness, Queen

Victoria and her Lady-in-Waiting were then escorted by John Brown, well turned out in his kilt and sporon (with the military in attendance) on a walk-about the village. Young trumpeter, Anthony preceded the group, announcing the arrival of the Royal party. Children were running around shouting, “The Queen is coming! The Queen is com-

ing!” The Queen then walked and chatted with her ‘subjects’. Steampunk brought their own original style and fashion as they partook of High Tea in the Puhi Nui homestead, played croquet on the lawn and mingled with the public. Their extravagant costumes attracted a lot of attention and interest. Children enjoyed
the many fun-filled activities including Roll a Penny, Fishing in a Barrel and the Woolsack Toss as well as participating in a Victorian school lesson, rope making, card decoration and butter churning. Interacting with Cherry the Clown who strode about the village on exceedingly long legs (stilts) was a highlight for many children. As a special acknowledgement of the royal wedding, many visitors were encouraged to write letters of congratulations to the Royal couple Harry and Meghan. These letters are winging their way to Buckingham Palace with a cover letter inviting Prince Harry and Meghan to visit the Howick Historical Village on their honeymoon to New Zealand later this year. Soldiers fired a five-gun salute in honour of the Queen which caused a flock of ducks on the village pond to rise up simultaneously in flight. The British flag was raised and lowered at the beginning and end of day with due respect paid to the Monarch, Queen Victoria - and all agreed it was right royal occasion enjoyed by all in attendance, at the Howick Historical Village.

COMMUNITY
Simeon signs on as patron of patrol group ■■By Kelly Teed They’re the unsung heroes of our community - and they want you to join them. You may have spotted Community Patrol cars or their shirts – but you may not be aware of all the good deeds they do. From educating community members on how to protect themselves against theft to acting as eyes and ears for the police, being a part of the Howick Pakuranga Community Patrol branch is about giving back to the community, says Counties Manukau District representative Graeme Walmsley. Mr Walmsley, who has been a part of the Howick Pakuranga Patrol for six years, says he decided to join when he retired and wondered what he was going to do with his newfound spare time. “One of the things being involved with community patrol is that not only giving back but also helping to keep it safe and those feelings are what motivate me. “When I was in a car park and the next minute I hear an Asian lady screaming having her car attacked by someone...to be able to go and help her, calm her down, get the police there and get her husband contacted – that’s the sort of activity where you sit down and think, that’s great.” MP for Pakuranga Simeon Brown has recently signed on as patron to the Howick Pakuranga Community Patrol and says he’s honoured to be a part of the organisation. “Community safety, and law and order are issues which I am passionate about, so it is a real honour to be involved in an organisation such as Howick Pakuranga Community Patrol. “The Community Patrol is a volunteer-run organisation and supports the work of the police. They provide a level of reassurance for locals who see them out and about keeping an eye on our streets and public places, and they work closely with the police to ensure our communities feel safe, and are safe.

group of students from Bucklands Beach Intermediate spent a morning cleaning up the area’s local beaches and came away with a load of rubbish. Called the Leo’s Group, eight students filled up nearly four bags of rubbish from the shores of Eastern Beach last week. One of two teachers who lead the group, Natasha Unkovich, says the kids collected bottle caps, nylon and rope and the trip brought about meaningful discussions with the students about caring for the environment. The Leo’s Group meets weekly with their two lead teachers Ms Unkovich and Anita Leeuw and Christine Ford from the Lions Club. Every week the group thinks of ways they can give back to the community through service, volunteering and collection. Recently Leo’s Group sold ice creams to raise money for Kidz First Hospital which went towards making activity packs for patients. “If we’re not out in the community, we are spending our meetings organising these different services for our com-

Teens heading to Microsoft comp ■■By Therese Henkin
T
he invention of a savvy new app has paved the way for three local engineers to make it to Seattle. Former Macleans students Winston Zhao, Sukhans Asrani and Andrew Hu will be heading to America in July to compete in the Microsoft Imagine Cup finals all thanks to a carpooling app they’ve created. The app, called UniRide, aims to connect students with other students looking to carpool. So far the three software engineering students have partnered with Auckland University as well as allowing students to sync with their Facebook friends list to help pair you with a suitable carpool
based on mutual friends and class timetables. They will be up against people from all over the world who have also come up with a genius invention in hopes of winning a $100,000 they will use to kickstart their new business venture. “With the way traffic is and the travel time from east Auckland, we had always tried to carpool but it was always difficult to organise,” says Winston. “In our experience, whenever we would try and carpool, there was nobody else available to jump on board and then when people wanted to carpool we always had too many people for one car.” He says it was this simple problem that sparked the idea.
The team of three recently competed in the Microsoft competition in Melbourne which earned them their placing in Seattle. They say the focus was on connecting university students with other university students to create a community of people interested in ride sharing into the city. “We found through a survey that the main deterrent for people to partake in carpooling was that they didn’t want to carpool with strangers, so we have worked really hard to create an app which pairs people with other likeminded people,” he says. Their app is currently in the Beta testing phase and is due to launch in January next year. ➤➤For more information on the app visit uniride.co
o you suffer from blurred vision? Do your eyes often burn? Do you have scratchy, itchy eyes? Do you sometimes have red eyes? Do you wake up with mucus around your eyelids? Do you suffer from arthritis, asthma, gout or diabetes? If you’ve experienced one or more of the above symptoms you should meet David Lee of Visique Botany Optometrist. He says that Dry Eye Syndrome affects more than 20 per cent of the adult population in Australasia and many people are unaware of this health condition. “It means that your eyes are not producing enough tears which results in dryness, irritation, redness, blurred vision and general discomfort in your eyes.” Our eyelids have special glands called Meibomian glands which produce an important oil layer to prevent the evaporation of tears. When there is a dysfunction in these glands, this can lead to Dry Eye Syndrome. This syndrome is also part of the natural aging process, as a side effect of many medications, or living in a dry or windy climate. People who have undergone cataract surgery, eye laser treatment or wear contact lenses may also be sufferers. Visique Optometrists have invested in an IPL equipment to treat the Dry Eye Syndrome. sive laser treatments, the Meibomian glands are stimulated to return to their normal function. Goggles are placed over the patient’s eyes and hydrogel is applied to the skin around the lower eyelid. The E-Eye IPL device is then used to apply a series of polychromatic pulsed light under the lower eyelid, a process that only takes a few minutes. This cutting edge French technology means results are visible within a couple of hours and for optimum results four treatments are required. Many customers have reported improved comfort and use less eye drops for dry eyes after the treatments. Visique Botany offer top quality and very friendly service. ew figures showing that first home buyers have taken out more housing mortgages with banks than any other buyer group in New Zealand over the past five years may mean that current housing policy is flawed says Property Institute of New Zealand chief executive Ashley Church. His comments are supported by the results of a joint report, released by the Property Institute and data company Valocity, which measures ‘mortgage registrations’ (the number of mortgages uplifted according to the different classifications that buyers identify with when they buy a property) which shows that first home buyers have dominated the number of new mortgages uplifted in each of the past 5 years in every part of the country except Auckland. “It’s fair to say that these results came as a shock. Every commentator in recent years has been concerned about the impact of house price inflation, on first home buy-
“We know from experience that property values roughly double in Auckland every 10 to 12 years.” – Ashley Church ers – so the discovery that they’ve been the largest group of buyers in the market is something of a bombshell”. Mr Church notes that the figures don’t include properties which were bought without the need of a mortgage or properties which were purchased by foreign investors who sourced their mortgage funds offshore but he says that it’s unlikely that these numbers would change the overall picture significantly. “Unless you buy into the now thoroughly-discredited claim that foreign buyers made up over 30 per cent of the market – these addi-

Mr Church says that this new information may lead to a review of current policies designed to support first home buyers. “Both National and Labour have been fixated on addressing the situation facing first home buyers in order to help more of them get into the market – but these figures suggest that this may not be the problem we all believed it to be,” Mr Church said. “If that’s the case, then maybe programmes like KiwiBuild need to be targeted more broadly and with a focus on making those homes available to those in the greatest need rather than only those who are buying their first home”. Mr Church says that the figures also provide a clear picture of the market, in general, over the past five years and demonstrate that the property market peaked in 2016. ➤➤Continued to page 13

Asbestos clarifications welcome relief “The guidance (released on Friday) clarifies that asbestos management plans are required when there is a risk that asbestos fibres will be released into the air, for example, when renovations or other building work occurs. “This means that asbestos management plans are not automatically required for all rental properties,” she continues. “As asbestos management plans can cost thousands of dollars, today’s (May 25) news will be a welcome relief to landlords and property man-
agers. “No doubt tenants will be relieved too, as this could have seen landlords seeking to offset some of the cost through rental increases,” she says. ➤➤The guidance for landlords and property managers can be found on the Worksafe website here: www.worksafe. govt.nz/laws-andregulations/operationalpolicy-framework/ operational-policies/policyclarification-residentiallandlords-and-asbestos/.

According to the Valocity data: The total number of mortgages uplifted in a 12 month period peaked at 164,000 in the year to March 2016 and
had dropped to 121,000 in the year to March 2018. This means that the total number of new mortgages in the year to March 2018 has dropped by 26 per cent off the March 2016 peak. In the year to March 2016, first home buyers uplifted 40,000 mortgages, nationwide, making them the largest group of new mortgage customers representing 24 per cent of all mortgages. By the year to March 2018 that number had dropped to 32,000 mortgages nationwide – although their share of total new mortgage business actually increased to 27 per cent Auckland bucked the national trend – with 18,000 mortgages (or 29 per cent of the total) being for the pur-
pose of refinancing in the year to March 2016. That figure had dropped to 12,000 mortgages by the year to March 2018 – but this lower number still represented 29 per cent of all mortgages. 33 per cent of properties, nationwide, are mortgage free – a figure which has remained largely unchanged over the past five years. Investors have never represented the largest group of new mortgage customers over the past five years. In the year to March 2016 they uplifted 29,000 new mortgages representing 18 per cent of all new mortgage business. By the year to March 2018 they had uplifted 19,000 new mortgages or just 16 per cent of all new mortgage business.

➤➤From page 12 “Almost without exception – the number of mortgages uplifted by every buyer group peaked in 2016 and has dropped away since then. That’s the clearest indication, yet, of when we reached the top of the market”. Mr Church says that, for those who follow New Zealand property cycles, this information allows them to predict where the market will go over the next 10 to 12 years with some degree of accuracy. “We know from experience that property values roughly double in Auckland every 10 to 12 years and, based on this rule of thumb, I’m of the view that the next cycle will start in 2021/2022 and that, by 2026 or 2027 the median house price,
From clutter to contemporary Lyn Wong’s kitchen is the heart of her home.
“We have a corner bi-fold pantry where the benchtop runs through the cabinet so she can have appliances plugged in and close the doors to hide any mess,” says Hannah.
But it was missing three key things – space, storage and practicality.
“I knew that there was a better way to use the available space and make the kitchen more functional.” Hannah Brown from Jag Kitchens had no trouble bringing Lyn and her husband Darrell’s vision to life.

everything has its own place.
It’s where she spends hours cooking and where she entertains family and friends.
“In its day the kitchen we had would have been amazing and really eye catching but there were a lot of things in the kitchen that were purely decorative and just not practical,” she says.
A Hafele Cooking Agent Pullout for oils and spices, which are used frequently in Chinese cooking, was put in near the cooktop for easy access. Jag Kitchens designer Hannah Brown with Lyn Wong in her simple, modern and well-designed kitchen.
and light brown timber wall cabinets and bar back. The 30mm Angola Black granite bench top and sleek stainless steel appliances gave the kitchen it’s stylish and modern edge.
The new kitchen is simple, modern and well-designed.
“A lot of the furniture in our home is heavy looking and with my husband’s love of hunting a lot of our decor is quite rugged so we wanted to kitchen to compliment that,” Lyn says.
Blue and timber accents and dated cabinets were replaced with warm, earthy tones and textures.
Kitchen designer Hannah says the kitchen had stayed the same since the house was built in the 90’s.
A crisp white was chosen as the base colour, and was brought to life with a seamless combination of dark warm grey tall cabinets
“The original kitchen had every design feature possible thrown in together with open shelves, wine racks, exposed drawers and blue
wooden handles,” she says. The original kitchen footprint was used and the layout stayed relatively the same, says Hannah. “The main focus was that the cooktop was on the angle of the benchtop and we wanted to move this to a straight wall for ease of cooking and also to add a powerful rangehood which is very important with Chinese cooking,” Hannah says. The layout stayed relatively the same, but the fridge was moved

place. Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “REINZ has been seeking clarification from Worksafe NZ regarding asbestos management plans and rental properties for a number of months now. “Clarity was needed because the wording of the legislation suggested that every residential rental property built before the year 2000 would require a comprehensive asbestos management plan. If this was the case, it would be a prohibitive cost for most landlords.
The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) has welcomed the policy clarification from Worksafe NZ on the requirement for asbestos management plans for residential rental properties. The clarification will be a welcome relief for landlords and property managers. On April 4 this year new rules came into force under the Health and Safety at Work (asbestos) Regulations which means that if you own or occupy a building which contains asbestos you needed to have a management plan in

to the end of the kitchen so that people could access it without entering the entire kitchen.
Lyn says working with Hannah and the Jag kitchen team was effortless and the kitchen came together just as she had hoped.
The pantry was made bigger and a pull out pantry was also added to maximise space and make reaching for ingredients easy.
“They had lots of ideas and advice and made sure they took into account everything we wanted for our kitchen,” Lyn says.
The sleek new cabinetry goes up to the ceiling, maximising the storage space and giving the kitchen a seamless look.
“They were happy for us to use our own tradesmen as well, which was great at helping us keep the costs down.
The kitchen features lots of drawers with Blum Orgaline Utensil and Cutlery inserts so
“The new kitchen is everything I imagined and I definitely have a lot more storage,” she smiles.

An inside view of Survivor island They were both hilarious and fun to listen to. From serious hunger pangs, to stealing scraps of food left behind by the film crew, to mud wrestling till they were ready to drop dead, best mates Matt Hancock and Dave Lipanovic gave the members of Rotary Club of Somerville an inside view of what really happens on Survivor NZ. The cool reality stars spoke about the toughest
game in the world that needs both strategy and physical strength as they regaled a captive audience with hilarious behind-the-scene anecdotes. “We thought there would be a fair bit of acting but once we landed on the island we were just given a rope and a machete and told this is it ... that’s when reality hit us,” said Dave. Mo’unga shows class H
aving bested Beauden Barrett in the Crusaders 24-13 Super Rugby triumph over the Hurricanes on a miserable wet Christchurch night, Richie Mo’unga highlighted New Zealand’s fortune in being blessed with so many world class first-fives. Take your pick - Barrett, Mo’unga or Damian McKenzie - each is a class act more than capable of serving the All Blacks with distinction few other teams can match. However, having been named International Player of the Year over the past two years, Barrett had looked set to become a permanent fixture as the All Blacks’ No 10 for many more to come. That is why classy Chiefs pivot Aaron Cruden decided to chase the big bucks abroad and why Highlander Lima Sopoaga will follow in his wake when the current season ends. With his speed, accurate crosskicks and happy knack of scoring tries, Barrett remains favoured to be the All Blacks’ selectors first choice. But as former first-fives themselves, Grant Fox and Ian Foster will be delighted with the development of Mo’unga and the electrifying McKenzie. Mo’unga has the same composure and game smarts as Sopoaga and has a happy knack of finding his supports after making a sharp break. His tactical kicking game on

a wet, chilly Christchurch night was far superior to that of Barrett’s. However none excite to the same extent as high risk dare-devil McKenzie who is being encouraged to temper his individual flair and work on improving his options. Certainly his kicking and passing game have improved and he is favoured to join the likes of PJ Perenara and Jordie Barrett on the bench as impact players. Meanwhile the highly regarded Hurricanes will be gutted they couldn’t beat a Crusaders team minus the suspended Joe Moody and Owen Franks and the injured Sam Whitelock, Tim Perry and Jordan Taufua. With Tim Bateman, Peter Samu and Braydon Ennor forced to leave the field injured, the Crusaders were left to scrape the scraps from the bottom of their barrel. ANNIVERSARY
Pakuranga Jaguars celebrate 50 years The Pakuranga Rugby League Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary this weekend. When it first opened in 1968, the club had only one team and for a while they also had softball and netball teams. Now heading into its 50th year, the club now has 12 junior and three senior rugby league teams. In the lead up to the celebrations, the club held a special “oldies” luncheon. It was a time for past players, members and their families to share memories about when they used to play for the club; and those stories were recorded and
will be shared during the jubilee celebrations. The 50th anniversary events will be held throughout Queens Birthday weekend from Friday June 1 until Monday June 4. The celebrations include a day of rugby league, where all the club’s teams have sent special invitations to clubs throughout Auckland to play at their home ground at Ti Rakau Park on Saturday June 2 and a community sports day on Sunday June 3. There’ll also be a mix and mingle night on Friday, a formal jubilee dinner and a champagne breakfast on Monday morning.

With Ivan Agnew
claiming the Super Rugby crown in his first season as Crusaders coach last year, Scott ‘Razor’ Robertson’s team has the forward power and sharp attacking edge to defend their title. Should they do so, Robertson could become a strong candidate to join the All Blacks coaching staff if Steve Hansen retires after the 2019 Rugby World Cup. However with an 89 per cent winning record and a chance to improve on it, Hansen’s record as head All Blacks coach will take some beating. Meanwhile the Hurricanes will seek to return to their winning ways away to the Highlanders on Friday night. The Blues host the Rebels at Eden Park at 5.15pm on Saturday before the Chiefs will attempt to make full use of home advantage from 7.30pm against the table-topping Crusaders. With Damian McKenzie and Augustine Pulu each scoring two of the Chiefs six tries in a hard fought 39-27 win against the Waratahs, the Chiefs will relish the challenge, especially with giant lock Brodie Retallick in devastating form. There are several great match-ups to kindle the interest of the selectors, none more than that between Mo’unga and McKenzie. ➤➤Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

Academy win goes to rising star Howick race driver Jordan Baldwin has topped the points-table of the 2017 New Zealand Elite Motorsport Academy to win the Ian Snellgrove trophy. The prestigious trophy, awarded in memory of long-time MotorSport New Zealand general manager and Academy programme trustee Ian Snellgrove, was presented to Baldwin during the MotorSport NZ annual awards dinner in Wellington on 26 May. New Zealand’s Elite Motorsport Academy is administered by the MotorSport NZ Scholarship Trust and run by tutors from Academy of Sport South Island and the University of Otago’s School of Physical Education’s Human Performance Centre. Last year marked the 14th time the programme has run. Baldwin, who turned 20 in March, was one of eight young motorsport competitors selected for the yearlong academy programme which started in July 2017 with an intensive week-long camp in Dunedin. He topped the points-table at the camp where par-

“It’s been one of the best weeks of my life. What you’ll learn is far more than you can ever learn somewhere else. The academy is run so professionally. Everyone involved does an amazing job.” Over the past year, Baldwin has mixed his university studies in commerce alongside the academy’s 12-month coaching programme and an impressive array of racing including taking out the rookie driver title for the six-round 2017-18 Toyota 86 Cham-
