So the PM’s pregnant…pause….! My mind is still reeling since the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern announced the wonderful news that she is pregnant – like the rest of the nation I am so pleased for her especially in light of the conception difficulties she implied.
LIMBER UP IN STYLE: One way to leg it through summer without letting festive feasting add on the kilos is to stay tight with an exercise regime. What’s more you’ll feel extra good working out in t(r)opical tights from Auckland company, Rose Road, whose tagline is ‘move the body, express the soul’. With a range of bright, colourful and ‘expressive’ patterns to choose from. Check out more on page 31.

However, just six months ago it seemed the consensus of opinion was that the PM’s baby plans were no business of the public. Remember the bollocking, AM presenter Mark Richardson received when he asked Jacinda Ardern if she was planning a family and how might she handle both parliament and parenthood (a question any legitimate journalist should be asking especially of a female PM who had already raised the subject herself)?

Last August, one news headline declared: ‘No, we don’t need to know about Jacinda Ardern’s baby plans. Ever!’ Well, now we do know; how the worm has turned! Harking back to last year’s debate, I also recall Richardson’s critics
Fortunately, Ms Ardern seems to have a sound arrangement with

On the other hand, watching television soon after Ms Ardern’s announcement, I did hear a presenter rattling off the names of several male MPs who were also celebrating the arrival, or impending arrival, of babies. Whoever said we would never ask a male MP about his parenthood situation seemed to have got that wrong. But the PM’s situation is vastly different than that of most male MPs facing fatherhood – for example, they don’t have to recover from what can be a physically taxing experience, they don’t need to consider the likes of breastfeeding or even expressing milk and they don’t need to deal with what can be strong maternal instincts.
Now that the PM is pregnant it seems to be everyone’s business?
Ph 09 271 8020 www.eastlife.co.nz
proclaiming we would never ask male MPs about their parenthood plans or even show much interest in their baby news – one article went so far as to say no one was interested if Bill English had six kids when he was PM (hang on, I was. I kind of liked it that he was dad to a tribe and PM, too).
her partner and, hopefully, six weeks will be enough for her to enjoy the bonding experience. However, it seems ironic that only a few months ago the media didn’t want a bar of baby talk; now it is ‘inspirational!’ And, I’m wondering just how much attention will be given to this baby. Somehow I don’t think it will be ignored; some people are even suggesting Jacinda’s new arrival will be New Zealand’s equivalent to Prince George, by George! So, I’m thinking Richardson’s original question about balancing parliament and parenthood may well raise its head again and I’m just as sure it will be ‘dammed if we do ask and damned if we don’t.” Then again, there’s nothing new in ‘we the messengers’ being shot is there?

As we plunge ever forwards into 2018 (and back to work) it’s not unusual to find that we do so with a little less spring in our step as the year wears on. Sure, there are plenty of supplements and potions designed to help boost our energy but they can come with strings attached. Thankfully, Berocca’s Forward range boasts less sugar than some similar beverages so what goes up doesn’t necessarily need to come down with a harsh sugar crash. Q&A Jacqui Wadham
with Franklin A&P society event co-ordinator
It may take a village to raise a child but it requires the efforts of folk from both town and country to pull off a quality A&P show. Recently, EastLife chatted with the Franklin A&P Society’s event co-ordinator and former Whitford local, Jacqui Wadham, who is in the midst of bringing together the new Counties Power Pukekohe Show. A committee member with the society for more than 20 years, and former chief horse steward, Jacqui is now taking on responsibility for being the woman behind the show, behind our region.
How did you come to take on the new event co-ordinator’s role? I have been secretary of the organisation since 2006. When the previous show planner resigned, the society restructured positions within the office. As I had worked in conjunction with the show planner in the past, and had also worked in a similar environment at the ASB Showgrounds Easter Show, the committee asked me to step into the event co-ordinator’s role. This not only covers the A&P Show but any events that are hosted here.
When did you first learn to ride and do you still ride for recreation e.g The Hunt?
We understand you train racehorses. Do you live on a lifestyle block, a farm or in town and have you been a trainer for very long? How do you find the time to combine both roles?
Do you train your own horses or do you train clients’ horses? Where do you train – at home or elsewhere? Do you own thoroughbreds yourself and are you a punter too?
My late husband and I began training racehorses when we moved to Pukekohe in 1972. Harvey held the licence but I was always hands-on. When he passed away in 2013, I became a trainer in my own right. The early morning starts for the horses works in well for my job here at the showgrounds; you get into a routine!
I am available to train clients’ horses and currently the horse I have in training is a family partnership giving us a lot of fun. I train out of Counties Racing Club here in Pukekohe although I do have a small track at home suitable for quiet work. No, I am not a punter although I may have a little flutter occasionally. I prefer to win stake money – haha.
My Grandmother bought me my first pony when we lived in Remuera and I grazed it in Victoria Ave – believe it or not we used to ride to the St Heliers Pony Club up Peach Parade onto Ladies Mile and out to Mertons Road past Winstone’s quarry! Imagine doing that now. We later moved to Whitford and I joined the Papatoetoe Pony Club at Flat Bush. My parents were also part of a group who established the original Whitford Pony Club. was very competitive at pony club events, representing NZ in show jumping, dressage and eventing. I also enjoyed hunting. As the urban sprawl creeps further towards Pukekohe, is there still a future for Franklin A&P and other such shows? Unfortunately, urban sprawl is inevitable. Even though some people think we occupy council land, the Franklin A&P Society owns the 52 acres that the showgrounds sit on. This makes us a bit different when many shows are being pushed aside because they are not the landowner. Do women who work full time outside of the home, or a farm, still enter competitions such as cake baking, preserves, vegetable growing etc or are these talents a dying art? The Home Industry section at Franklin is still extremely well supported across all facets of the event. Each year we do subtle changes to the classes just to keep people on song. This year we have introduced an oil section for cold pressed oils. What about local men do they still want to compete in events such as Counties Strongest Man, wood chopping log sawing and the like? I’m not sure yet if there are local men involved in this year’s Counties Strongest Man event, however, the wood chopping has attracted several local choppers with the Waiuku Axemen always in contention. This year the wood chopping is on for the two days with a NZ Championship carded. Is organising the A&P show a year round effort or does it all come together in two or three months? It would be nice to think it only takes two to three months work! Once we tidy up this year the brains will start rolling again to see what new attractions we can find and how we can improve what was done right or wrong. We are always questioning ourselves as to how we can improve. This year the show has gained a key sponsor and while it is still managed by the Franklin A&P Society it has been titled, The Counties Power Pukekohe Show. How helpful has this sponsorship been and what are the gains? The show gaining major www.eastlife.co.nz
Jacqui Wadham – leading events for the Franklin A&P Society. sponsorship from Counties Power has been fantastic and very motivational to us all. For us, having Counties Power involved has certainly inspired others sponsors to become involved. Has there been any reaction to the name change from locals or hasn’t it sunk home yet? If it hasn’t, do you think the new name will be welcomed? We have had some comments but when we explained that, unfortunately, Franklin does not register as a place (township) but Pukekohe does most folk seem to understand. To get outsiders to the show we need to use Pukekohe – it is what registers in people’s minds – they live in the township of Pukekohe, they see it in newspaper reports, it will be on their GPS, on
motorway signs and more. If you could grow any plant or raise any animal what would it be and why?

Harness racing – risky business paying off? In simple terms, when it comes to the ‘gee-gees’, success quite literally begets success. But ensuring the right begetting is being done often comes down to an experienced, award-winning horse breeder such as former Howick local Tony Dickinson. JON RAWLINSON explains.
For decades, Alta Dream Lodge – run by Tony and Val Dickinson – has produced pacers for the harness racing track both here and abroad. Unfortunately, Tony says, today’s Kiwis are favouring more pastimes than simply rugby, racing and beer. “The sport is not as strong today as it was in the past,” the once long time Howick resident explains. “I think it’s because there are just so many more options when it comes to sport and gambling. There’s been a quantum shift in terms of how people get their entertainment; there’s much more available, more competition.” Despite more sports chasing the same dollar, overseas demand for Kiwi horses remains strong. I ask whether, subsequently, New Zealand has become more breeding ground than racetrack. “Yes. Harness racing is still very popular abroad, in Europe and the USA, so they need top quality horses, which we are known to provide. We might become even more of a breeding ground, but our racing base must be kept to current levels at least.” Future fortunes depend on New Zealand’s racetracks proving grounds for future champions, at least, he contends. Overall, Tony remains optimistic there are still enough Kiwi punters keen on racing to keep the sport’s wheels turning. “There have been plenty of opportunities for the racing codes – that’s harness racing and gallops as well as greyhounds – to hold the line, if you like, but in the recent past they just simply haven’t done enough to hang on to their audience.
14 | eastlife | february 2018
“They are working hard on it now and I think changes at the Racing Board are making a difference. I am hopeful we’ll see a resurgence in the racing industry in future and there are signs that could happen.”
Got to know how to foal ‘em After many years living in Howick, Tony began breeding horses soon after he moved with his wife, Val, to a Karaka lifestyle section in the 1970s. Unlike his sister’s, Tony’s passion for horses was born of a penchant for a well-placed wager. “My sister, Ann, was the one into riding; she was with the pony club and later rode with the Pakuranga Hunt. She actually married into the Eisdell Moore family [well known for their connection to the hunt],” he reflects. “I always had an inkling that I’d like to get into the industry. I used to bet a couple of dollars at the TAB and loved to listen to the races; it
just evolved from there.” Many years on and the thrill of harness racing still has Tony all ‘a-flutter’. “I still back my own horses, but only with $10 or $20 each way, so when people say I must have made a packet out of a win, I can always say I had a small investment,” he smiles. “Gambling is just a small part of the total package for me; all part of the fun.” The fun of breeding champions began in earnest with a mare called Alta Serena. Sold by the couple for just $3500, she would go on to win $600,000 for her owners, which put Alta Dream Lodge on the map. Other top lots which followed include Alta Christiano, Alta Maestro, and Alta Camilla, a broodmare which has brought the Dickinsons some rich rewards indeed. “The foundation blood in Alta Camilla is very strong and there has been a prolific number of winners from her. We sent her to the best stallions we could afford and hit the jackpot – she’s not missed yet; she’s had five
foals and all have performed exceptionally well.” Although the services of a skilled trainer are invaluable – and drivers provide much more than just ballast on the back of a sulky – nature and nurture are crucial to a pacer’s winning (and whinnying) formula, Tony confirms. “I could say [victory on the track] is all down to clever breeding,” he laughs. “But there is a heck of a lot of luck involved too.” After many years, and plenty of winning runs from his horses, Tony claimed a win of his own. Late last year, he was recognised at the North Island Harness Racing Awards for his ‘Outstanding Contribution to Harness Racing’ – which includes 20 years on the executive of the North Island Standardbred Breeders’ Association. “I was petrified about going up to get the award but I was very proud,” he says, modestly. “Breeding and selling horses is just something we do all the time but this award came totally out of the blue. [It was] great recognition from my peers.”
Fresh horses, future champs When the ‘who’s who’ of the horsey set descends on Karaka for this month’s Australasian Classic Yearling Sale (for standardbreds), Tony Dickinson from Alta Dream Lodge expects a filly named Alta Louisa, in particular, will catch the eyes of buyers. “She is the first foal from
Alchemist, who won 16 races and $330,000, so we’re more than hopeful we’ll get good return.” A colt, Alta Destiny – from an American mare, Samantha Q – is also one to watch, he believes. While any future victories by these two – the latest in Alta’s prodigious line – look set to
profit others, Tony still gets a kick out of seeing any of his brood cross the line first, and there’s a more tangible benefit too: “You have to bear in mind that plenty of other people see horses we’ve bred winning too,” he smiles, “Which, I must admit, isn’t too bad for business!” www.eastlife.co.nz

Twelve steps to the
Perfect Wedding
Every couple wants their wedding to be absolutely flawless. Achieving perfection, however, requires quite a bit of organising. Here are a few things to remember when planning your big day. CHOOSE THE DATE
MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS
SHOP FOR YOUR ATTIRE
Consider the day and date carefully. Make sure your closest friends and family members will be able to attend especially if you want a weekday wedding when many people are at work. If your sister is pregnant or your best friend is planning a trip, take that into account in order to avoid disappointment.
Book the venues for your ceremony and reception as soon as possible, especially if you’re wedding is in summer. Popular venues are often reserved up to a year in advance. If planning an outdoor wedding ensure there is a room or a wellsheltered area available should it rain on the day; even during the best of summers storms do occur. Book honeymoon accommodation and, if applicable, flights.
Start shopping as early as possible so you can find the best deals and make the right choices. Check with your bridal store if gowns can be altered down the track should you lose or gain weight and ensure you know how far out from the wedding the retailer requires this to be done. If a gown is coming from overseas, last minute alterations may not be possible.
SEND OUT INVITATIONS
Think about how you’ll accessorise your outfit for the ceremony and don’t forget about makeup and hair trials – book your hairdresser early, she may be in big demand especially for Saturday weddings. When shopping for bridal and attendants’ gowns think about the men’s attire at the same time although this may be booked a little later. Also consider the colour of attendants’ attire; will it be part of an overall colour theme?
DRAFT THE GUEST LIST Make a list of all the people you’d like to see at your wedding. But, keep your budget in mind as more people mean higher costs. Ensure both sides – bride and groom’s family – are given equal share of the guest list unless it has been agreed otherwise for a particular reason.
MAKE A JOB LIST TOO List all the things you need to do ahead of the big day and prioritise. Some bookings will need to be made as early as possible others can be left till later. Consider the professionals you will book and who among family and friends can help. Attire is a given but don’t forget transport (wedding cars or other), hairdresser, florist, cake maker, photographer, entertainer, marriage celebrant and, of course, venues.
The earlier you send out ‘save the date’ cards and invitations, the better. While six weeks prior to the wedding was the accepted standard for many years, eight weeks is now more common. However don’t send out months in advance in case invites are put aside and forgotten or they result in hasty replies with people then cancelling closer to the date. Be sure to ask invitees to RSVP – use an email address for ease of reply. This will also encourage guests to respond promptly. Posted replies are fast disappearing. This is also a good time to designate bridesmaids and groomsmen.
Choose your wedding bands wisely — after all, you’ll be wearing them for the rest of your life!
DRAW UP A FLOOR PLAN
CHOOSE THE MENU
Visit the venue as many times as you need to. If you’re planning to hire a band, display a slideshow or organise a karaoke session, confirm that the location allows it.
Is your goal to please as many people as possible or to step off the beaten path? Do you need to plan vegetarian/vegan options or kid-friendly snacks? Determine what type of meal will be served at your wedding, and don’t forget drinks and desserts as well as canapés to be served after the actual ceremony during the time your photographs are being taken, often elsewhere.
DECORATE THE VENUE Get in touch with your florist and decorator to discuss your ideas and ask for advice. If you’re on a tight budget, consider taking care of the decorating yourself — enlist the help of friends and make sure you start early.
CHOOSE AN MC Who will be the master of ceremonies for the event? Someone you know or a hired pro? Also think about the music. www.eastlife.co.nz
VISIT A JEWELLER
IMMORTALISE THE DAY Book a professional photographer early, guests may also take photos but these will be less formal and can be affected by lighting, rain or camera quality. Photo-booths and disposable cameras are great for capturing candid memories, but couples usually want an album of creative, professional shots too. eastlife | february 2018 |

wed with a Looking your absolute best come the wedding day lies in your preparation.
finishing touches
healthy glow
Many brides aim to shed a few excess kilos, so starting a healthy eating plan with plenty of exercise, as well as drinking two litres of water a day, are good habits to form well before the big day. Not only will you be toned but a clear complexion and a sense of wellbeing should be added benefits. Walk with friends, attend a yoga class or join the gym – they are all great ways to start exercising. If time is short consider a personal trainer. Acne, broken capillaries, spider veins and other skin problems can be resolved with regular visits to a beauty salon prior to the big day. Glycolic skin peels and micro-dermabrasion are means to keeping skin looking polished and in tip-top condition. Don’t leave it all to one beauty session a week before the wedding. Sometimes, a late start can see the skin blemishes erupt and these may need several treatments to correct. Regular facials and massages are key to looking healthy and relaxed. Many salons and day spas offer a wedding package, which includes hair and makeup consultations and trials, manicures and pedicures. Others have packages tailor-made to hens’ nights, where the bride and her bridesmaids are pampered from top to toe.
“The beauty of the day wasn’t measured by the layers on the cake or the fabric of her dress, but the way he looked at her when she walked down the aisle.” whitening is an affordable and simple way to achieve sparkling teeth while other dental work is available to cover a chipped tooth, gaps or loss of a tooth. Consult your dentist early so that when the big day arrives your smile will be remembered for all the right reasons.
Prior to the big day pay attention to brow shaping as well as brow and lash tinting or go all out for lash extensions. Long, lustrous eyelashes are an asset when it comes to close up photography. Hands are vitally important too especially as many photographs focus on the ring, signing of the register or the clasping of flowers. This means nails should be manicured and painted. If your nails are notoriously poor, book for a set of gel nails so you can show your hands confidently.
♥ SHOES – Decorate your feet with elegant ankle-strap shoes. Popular styles are delicate and feminine and bear a resemblance to anklets.
♥ EMBELLISHED GLOVES – Long or short gloves are trending this season especially fine lace, fingerless, wristlength gloves. Choose a pair embellished with rhinestones or pearls for an elegant, romantic touch. ♥ SHOW-STOPPING SHOULDERS – Bare shoulders are on trend. Popular dress styles include strapless, halter and off-shoulder.

AN
five good reasons to
marry in winter
The idea of a winter wedding might raise a few doubts but they actually have a number of upsides!
LOWER COSTS Getting married in winter will often save you money. How? For one, you’ll be purchasing your attire at a slow retail time of the year. What’s more, florists, decorators and caterers may be more willing to negotiate.
Gifts
SCHEDULING FLEXIBILITY
Gourmet, eco-friendly, original, unusual —there’s no lack of choice when searching for the perfect wedding favour for your guests.
It can be a lot easier to secure winter reservations for your big day: churches, reception venues, caterers and entertainers are usually less busy at this time.
SEASONAL MAGIC Be inspired by winter magic to add a special touch to your wedding. Create winter white ambience with twinkling white or silver decorations representing icicles, snowflakes and glittering baubles. Include some silver frosted faux trees. Turn heads by arriving in a velvet cloak trimmed with feathers or down. Perhaps your photographer could create a winter backdrop for some or your photographs.
COsY MEMORIES Treat your guests to the cosiest of wedding breakfasts by serving them hot beverages – such as mulled wine – by the fire or give
them warm blankets as a gift. Ensure your venue emanates warmth and a sense of shutting out the cold, somewhere with couches and throws, against the backdrop of those wintery decorations.
HONEYMOON IN THE SUN A winter wedding in New Zealand means couples who want to honeymoon in the sun can. The Pacific Islands, Northern Queensland (Australia) and South East Asia are all affordable, warmweather escapes. Some folk may even take the whole wedding to the Pacific – an option that has become extremely popular. Of course, there is also the option of a European honeymoon if the budget allows or, perhaps, Hawaii. As you can see a winter wedding has many advantages so, think about it!
for guests
A small gesture goes a long way in thanking them for being with you on one of the most important days of your life. But despite all the choices, choosing the right favour is never easy. Here are a few ideas. Start by setting your budget; this will narrow down your choices and save time. Then think about the theme of your wedding, if you have one. You could have pretty candles for a romantic wedding; a small, potted cactus for an eco-friendly or exotic wedding; wine glasses for a vineyard wedding reception; floral coasters for a garden wedding — the possibilities are endless. There are gourmet treats (truffles,
candies, jams), decorative trinkets (photo frames, magnets, vases) and useful objects (themed playing cards, notepads). You could give a short-lived gift, such as a heartshaped chocolates, or you could chose a souvenir keep-sake. Where possible, gifts should include the date of the wedding and both your names and, remember to include the likes of colouring pens and book, lollipops or soap bubbles for younger guests. Search through specialised stores to find inspiration and ask friends which favours they have received and enjoyed at other weddings then add your personal touch! So, perfume, coffee, a travel diary or time-honoured choccies — what will you choose? For your big day to be as magical as you hope, you’ll have to think of everything beforehand and be organised.

Thumbs up for city sojourn Holiday escapes generally take Aucklanders well beyond their home city but over the festive period, HELEN PERRY, with husband in tow, spent two nights in the heart of the city, an experience she highly recommends.
We had only to walk through double doors from the foyer lounge to be confronted by a plethora of attractive eateries, a fascinating maritime walk, places of interest and a glittering sea. We had planned to book in then head for Waiheke Island on our
first day; the Fullers Twilight wine tasting and dinner tour appealed. But from the moment we arrived in town, The Viaduct enthralled us. What’s more we managed to snaffle an early 6pm booking at Soul Bar & Restaurant on the proviso we were out by 7.30pm which actually suited us.

Seemed like a plan to me so we booked in at The Sebel (apartments) located above that corner of The Viaduct which is home to a string of restaurants such as Giraffe by Simon Gault, Portofino, The Viaduct Grill, Soul Bar and Restaurant, Danny Doolans and several others.
The Viaduct offered just outside.

finesse. Although seated inside, we were close to the windows so enjoyed the best of both worlds. Furthermore our evening turned out to be doubly enjoyable. Not only was the meal memorable but we ending up chatting with guests at tables on either side of us – young American honeymooners and a retired American couple who were returning to the South Island for their second visit. What a pleasure it was talking to them all. And, what a pleasing meal we enjoyed, too – tuna carpaccio, oysters from three regions and trevally on toast with parsley lemon mayonnaise for starters followed by mains of hapuka topped with crayfish ravioli and truffle dressing, broccolini with Nancy’s mustard crumb (very yum) and red skinned potatoes. To finish – the best ever ginger crème brûlee with pear sorbet, ginger bread and walnuts like I’ve never had before. Presentation and that ginger/walnut crumb were superb. Replete, a walk to the silos was in order before we popped back upstairs for a coffee and nightcap, www.eastlife.co.nz
a little TV, then lights out! Our second day was equally as enjoyable. It started with poached eggs on toast at Giraffe by Simon Gault with a side of bacon for me and a side of mushrooms for my man – the latter were, indeed, magic! I must ask the chef for his recipe. Afterwards we took the maritime walk, reading ever plaque along the way – fascinating history. We were equally intrigued by several yachts owned by the Tino Rawa Trust – their histories and preservation made for interesting reading, too. We certainly learned something new. Then it was onto…
Riverhead Cruising with the Red Boats: Funnily enough, I had read about this cruise in our very own EastLife magazine and immediately decided we must do it one day. Well, December 28 was that day – warm, sunny, calm; ideal for the 90-minute trip each way with full commentary ($35 per head) and including a two-hour stop over at the Riverhead Tavern for lunch
(the latter booked and paid for separately). What a delight. Locals and visitors would surely enjoy this outing as much as we did. With bar service and snacks available on board, patrons quickly settled in for the tranquil journey upstream, most of us learning a lot along the way. On arrival we were directed to our table on one of several decks outside this grand old lady (completely renovated in 2010), where green and leafy, 100-yearold oak trees provided the perfect canopy. Glimpses of the river below completed the picture. The lunch meals were simple bar food – fish and chips with salad, burger and chips, steak sandwich, nachos and the like – inexpensive (around $14-$18) with plenty of beer and wine options. However, on those days
when the cruise brings guests for dinner (dependent on tides) I saw there was a more extensive and upmarket selection of dishes. Frankly, I could have stayed much longer. The location was an idyllic spot; you know the kind of place songs are made of – down by the riverside, up a lazy river, rolling on the river, river of dreams and a whole lot more.…. But, before we knew it, our Red Boat beckoned and it was back to town with the leisurely cruise seeing more than few heads nodding including my own! Indeed, this was a day to remember as was our whole Viaduct escape – perfect location at The Sebel, eclectic dining choices, sightseeing galore (Waiheke next time), and a chance to renew our acquaintance with this stunning part of Auckland. A return break is in the pipeline. eastlife | february 2018 |

Classic Rhymes for Kiwi Kids While rhymes as bizarre as: ‘Twinkle, twinkle little bat, how I wonder what you’re at’ are best left to the original mad hatter, Lewis Carroll, Classic Rhymes for Kiwi Kids isn’t quite classic in nature. Instead, Peter Millett (with a little help from illustrator, Scott Tulloch) presents a book of well-known rhymes which have been adapted to take on a more ‘Kiwi’ flavour. Promoted as ‘Fred Dagg meets Mother Goose’, this book is sure to have little ones insisting this is how those rhymes of old actually go! • Peter Millett: Classic Rhymes For Kiwi Kids | RRP $19.99 | Bateman Publishing
Making snacks more fun Rockabye Early Learning Centre takes the care and education of young children seriously. Today, centre owner Caryn Mawkes has some helpful tips for making snack times more interesting. After days and days of the same snacks, kids may become less interested in what is served to them. While there are only so many snacks which are easy to prepare, nutritious, and cost effective, with a little imagination, some everyday snacks can easily be made more appealing and interesting.
Colour the snack Many snacks can be coloured with just a drop or two of food colouring. Kiddies will love drinking green milk on St Patrick’s Day or eating blue pudding in the summer.
starlight stables
Let your child help to make the snack
Wild horses couldn’t drag many a girl (in particular) away from stories about wild horses, and Soraya Nicholas’ Starlight Stables books offer no exception. In the latest installments Brumby Rescue and Barmah Brumbies) Poppy must prove she has what it takes to tame her wild horses. Tales of a giddy-up kind of kid from Aus who’s giddy about equines, these books are sure to occupy many a reader’s attention... until they start to ask for a pony of their own, that is!
The age of your child will determine how much of a snack they will be able to prepare by themselves. Something as small as letting children serve themselves may be enough to get them more excited about what they will be eating. Depending on the snack, your child may be able to mix or assemble it.
• Soraya Nicholas: Starlight Stables – Brumby Rescue & Barmah Brumbies | RRP $15.99 each | Penguin Random House
Flying Furballs – Most Wanted Roll over Snoopy, Claude D’Bonair from the cat air corp is in the air and he’s gunning for any dog-gone dog he sees. In a world where cats and dogs are at war, they’re going at it like, well, cats and dogs in this book by Donovan Bixley. When Claude’s ‘bird’ goes down behind enemy lines, high jinks turn to hi-jinks as the heroic feline attempts to out-fox his enemies, trying to survive with at least one of his nine lives left intact. This action-packed adventure – the latest in a bestselling series – is sure to entertain boys, girls and parents too. • Donovan Bixley: Flying Furballs – Most Wanted | RRP $14.99 | Upstart Press

bananas after listening to the Dear Zoo book with monkeys in it. You can also talk about how a snack is made/grown, its nutritional value, or how it was prepared.
Name the snack Giving snacks fun names which allow children to use their imagination will make them more appealing e.g. Annie apple or Oscar orange. Most parents know that a great day out can very quickly turn to custard if children go too long between drinks (or snacks). Try these ideas for a quick fun, fast foods to bite on the run:
Educate your child about the snack
• Cheese and rice crackers • Apple slices, raisins, mandarin segments, blueberries, grapes. • Hummus and carrot sticks. • Cashews or almonds and dried apricots • Cheese pieces (good for at home when dinner’s running late) • Mini sandwich shapes: use heart, star or crescent shapes for bitesized Marmite, peanut butter or jam sandwiches. • Celery “boats” filled with cream cheese or peanut butter. • Digestive biscuit “sandwiches” filled with cream cheese. • Savoury pikelets: Add some grated carrot, crushed frozen peas or other finely chopped vegies plus a cup of cheese to your usual pikelet recipe.
If the snack is related to a theme, talk about this with your child who may have a lot more fun eating
With the school year set to begin, we hope you enjoy trying some of these quick and easy snacks.
Shape the snack Many snacks such as cheese, jelly, and breads can be easily shaped with a cookie cutter. Some storebought snacks, such as crackers, biscuits, and fruit snacks, will already be shaped to make them more kid-friendly.
Early Learning Centre • Hours 7.30am-5.30pm, full & part time • Positions for children aged 0-5 years • Our family relationships are important to us. Education Review Office in April 2014 rated our centre in the top 5%. They stated: Consistent, effective teaching practice; Children happy and settled, with a strong sense of belonging; Children involved in rich literacy, numeracy and science opportunities

warrant of fitness YVONNE VANNOORT, from Sanctuary Dental, Bishop Dunn Place, Botany talks about protecting your teeth over the holidays.
Celebrating the month of love with Vivo
Regular servicing is a given if cars are to perform properly and avoid costly or inconvenient breakdowns. Teeth need regular attention too if they are to remain in good order, do their job well and go the distance.
This month Vivo Hair & Beauty Howick and Pakuranga look at what’s trending for Valentine’s Day and romantic dates. With another February here we’ve gone from the silly season to the season of love and undoubtedly hearts will be humming as Valentine’s Day approaches. And surely, both young and mature couples will be scrambling to look their best throughout this month of romance when who knows what might happen! With that in mind, Vivo is dishing out the trends and must haves to consider. Hair perfumes are poised to be a big hit this year with Goldwell’s range hitting the spot for love birds seeking premium scents at affordable prices. These gorgeous fragrances will set you back a mere $48 and a spritz or two will last for hours – a definite hit for Valentine’s Day. Alongside gorgeous scents, Vivo stylists understand the importance of good hair for any occasion so, this year come in for a date night blow-dry, hot off the Vivo blow-dry bar, for just $49. Choose from five wearable looks, sit back and relax in the hands of our stylists. As for beauty, our beauty team is
all about facials this year. Be it a hydrating, lifting or a moisturising facial, ensure your skin receives the attention it deserves before your big date or getaway.
Early intervention, as the result of regular dental checks, means small problems are unlikely to become big and, sometimes, painful problems.
“It will help make-up sit on the skin so much better, and for longer too,” says Vivo beauty manager, Siobhan Chant. “If going make-up free, a facial can also benefit skin by providing an extra glow and plumped up look.”
A dental WOF looks for decayed and/or cracked teeth or fillings. All areas of the mouth and the gums are also examined with the dentist also checking out jaw joints, wisdom teeth, signs of cancer, bite and medications that affect teeth, diet and nutrition.
Senior stylist, Gina, from Vivo Salon in Howick, raves about pastel hair colours. A pop of colour is at the top of her Valentine’s wish list this year. “Whether opting for a touch of pastel pink or a light rinse of purple, your hair can be your best accessory with our Goldwell pastel colour range,” she says. So, there you have it; between well-nourished skin and pastel coloured, sweet-smelling hair, you are sure to achieve a stunning look. Whether you are celebrating with friends, family or a partner, these tips are sure to make yours a memorable one. See you in the salon!

Decayed teeth can often be sorted with a simple filling, however, over time, the tooth may need to be extracted or have a root canal (if you want to keep the tooth in place). The earlier we can help the better.
Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss so this needs to be identified and treated as early as possible. Apart from causing smelly breath, gum disease is linked to heart disease, diabetes, strokes and low birth weight babies. That’s because gums act as a barrier and when they are infected and inflamed, bacteria enters the blood stream via the compromised barrier. The monitoring system we find most beneficial for people, is a six-monthly visit to one of our very gentle hygienists, together with a yearly check by one of our dentists supported by two-yearly X-rays. Prevention is certainly better than cure and overall health depends on it so, don’t wait too long.

TREATING DRy EyE Owner-optometrist of Eyes of Howick, KRISTINE JENSEN talks about a dry topic – keratoconjunctivitis sicca.
What IS Dry EyE?
What caN you Do to hElP?
Dry eye or keratoconjunctivitis sicca is one of my favourite optometry topics; not only do I suffer this myself but it is also the most common eye condition I diagnose and treat in my practice. It may cause any or all of the following: • Gritty or itchy eyes • Foreign body sensation • Sore, stingy or red eyes • Watery or tired eyes • variable vision or glare sensitivity
• Improve your blink – blink more frequently, particularly when reading and using digital devices. If eyes begin to feel gritty, relax and take 10 slow, complete blinks.

Generally there a two types of dry eye: • aqueous deficiency – the lacrimal gland fails to produce enough basal tear layer. • Evaporative dry eye – due to (MGD) meibomian gland (oil glands of the eyelids) dysfunction resulting in reduced oil component to tears. Causes may include: • age – evaporative dry eye is more common as we get older • gender and hormones – women are more often affected than men, menopause, and hormone imbalance being associated. • general health – rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid dysfunction, Sjogren’s syndrome, Rosacea. • medication – antihistamines, antidepressants, some blood pressure medicines, Parkinson’s medication and oral contraceptives. • Environment – dry, dusty or windy climate, air conditioning, contact lens wear and computer use.
• get hydrated – you can hydrate eyes from inside and out by ensuring your fluid intake is sufficient while reducing alcohol and caffeine. Tear supplement eye drops can also help replenish the tear film while some include electrolytes to enhance the hydration effect. Wear wraparound glasses which have a ‘moisture seal’ creating a more humid environment for eyes and increasing comfort. • clean me – thoroughly remove eye make-up so there is no debris clogging the meibomian glands. If you have blepharitis, a special eyelid cleanser may be recommended. • Warm me up – hot compresses work well for evaporative dry eye. your optometrist can supply a special heat pack for your eyes, otherwise just try a warm facecloth held over your eyes for up to 10 minutes, twice daily.

Al Brown’s special catch Ideal for the summer table, fresh fish is always on trend but never more so than when it comes from Freshcatch, the company which delivers fresh fish from dock to door. Here, Al Brown provides with a recipe using porae, a delicious eating fish which looks a little like tarakihi but has also been mistaken for snapper. It has a silvery body with a blue/green tinge on top and bluish fins and can be identified by it ‘big lips’ and long pectoral fins. Juveniles have a dark blotch along their sides. Don’t be dismayed by the little patch of brown muscle on the top of the shoulder when filleted. This is normal; it is not a bruise or infection and tastes no different to the other flesh so, discover this species with the following recipe.
Freshcatch Herb Crumb Al says: Baking fish is a simple and healthy method of cooking. The addition of a crumb brings more flavour and a delightful crunchy texture to contrast the delicate fish.
• Flaky sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper • 6 portions 150gm skinless porae (or similar, medium/large flaked fish)
Serves 4
Method:
Ingredients:
Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Tear baguette into small, rough pieces and place in a mixing bowl. Add panko, chilli, lemon zest and juice, chopped herbs, and melted butter. Mix ingredients together until the bread is buttery and moist. Season well with salt and pepper.
• 1/2 baguette (crust cut off) • 1 cup panko • 1/2 chilli (seeds removed, finely diced) • 1 lemon (zest and juice) • 1/4 cup chives • 1/4 cup chervil • 1/4 cup mint • 1/4 cup basil • 1/2 cup parsley • 100gm butter (melted)
Lay out your portions of fish and season with salt and pepper. Carefully pack herb crumb on top of the fish, trying to cover as much
as you can. Transfer fish onto a greased oven tray, then bake for 10 to 15 minutes until the crumb has turned golden and crispy, and the fish feels firm when you squeeze the sides.
Serve with a squeeze of lemon.

Tiny home no hobby house Often enough, the biggest ideas in business grow from the smallest of seeds. And yet, for one local family, a big dream actually involved something on a much more diminutive scale. JON RAWLINSON explains. After moving down the line to the Bay of Plenty, Peter Bartlett may have been looking to manoeuvre towards retirement but, instead, this former builder’s would-be hobby provided the foundations for a family business. “I thought this [building tiny houses] would be a bit of a hobby business for Dad,” Peter’s daughter and company director, Rebecca Bartlett, laughs, “But now he’s probably working harder than ever!” When plans to build an income producing unit at their Maretai property fell flat, Rebecca and her partner (Maihi McLean) soon found themselves on a roll with a new business, Tiny House Builders. “Even before starting digging [on the unit], we would have been thousands of dollars down in architects’ fees, resource and building consents and services thrusting through the road for drainage. And, after all the stress, we wouldn’t have been able to create the income to pay for all the work and also allow us to get any money out of it,” the former Howick College student says.
Looking to live large in a tiny house? Rebecca Bartlett and her team are ready to build you your own dream home. For more information, contact:
“Then, about a year ago, I saw a tiny house online; it seemed like the perfect solution. We started building one and a few months later it was done. We took it to the home show in Tauranga and had thousands of positive comments; people just loved it!”

Thought to have been born of the global financial crisis, the tiny house movement is gaining momentum worldwide. Here in New Zealand, tiny homes have been embraced by people from all walks of life.

“How people are looking to use them has been very interesting. Some want them as baches; some for permanent living. Retirees see potential for living on their children’s sections in a tiny house, and others see them as a first step onto the property ladder,” Rebecca says. “yes, our tiny houses may be small but, then again, they’re probably
bigger than some apartments in Auckland City!” They could even prove a perfect pick for orchards or other businesses employing seasonal labour, she adds – “easy accommodation!” Thanks to one clever feature in particular, Kiwis are also being driven towards the economical, www.eastlife.co.nz
more eco-friendly ‘tiny life’ these homes offer. “They’re actually classed as vehicles [by councils] because they’re on trailers and their maximum size is defined by New Zealand’s towing rules,” Rebecca explains. “Once taken off, there are added building consent issues which need to be addressed.” When it comes to selling these

While such compact living may not suit pack rats, size can make a difference in more ways than just one.
If we can find suitable neutral corners when the wheels fall off on domestic bliss, home could still prove sweet, especially when bills roll in.

smaller. Also, tiny houses require less power – they’re so easy to light and heat and so well insulated that the power bills are the smallest you could ever imagine.” Rebecca confirms. “However, yes, I think people do need to consider [the lack of space] if they’re in a bit of a ‘flighty’ relationship!” Fortunately, we Kiwis are a get-along kind of people… aren’t we readers?

Lower sales volumes for 2017 1.8% over the year from December 2016’s $855,000.
Total Focus Principal, GREG ROy AREINZ, gives an update on the local real estate market happenings. The new year’s real estate market is showing some signs of renewed energy. The level of enquiry is better than the same time last year and open homes attendance levels are steady and rising. The Real Estate Institute sale statistics for December 2017 show that our area, Eastern Beaches, rounded out that year with a fall in the median price back to $1,031,000, just above December 2016’s $1,021,500 and down considerably in a month from November’s $1,130,000. In summary the median for 2017 fluctuated between $1,022,500 and $1,140,000 giving little in the way our direction is really heading. Sales numbers for December were
Auckland is feeling the effects, with the Real Estate Institute calculating that there are 30% less investors in the market now with many looking to sell their portfolio rather than expand it.
138, down from November’s 151 but up on December 2016’s 118. Realestate.co.nz is currently showing 347 properties for sale in the area, continuing the trend of decreasing stock levels. This time last month we had and 395 and the previous month was 447. A year ago it was sitting at 346.
Buyers are being cautious, and vendors are looking to hold their prices. Some vendors are seeing the new Cv’ as the value of their properties and, for a number, this is just not the case. Across the country total sales for 2017 were 68,737, down 15.7% compared to 2016. Nationally the median rounded out the year at $550,000, up 5.8% from December 2016’s $520,000. If you take Auckland out of the nation totals, the median increase was 6.6% now $450,00 from $422,00.
For Auckland overall, the year proved hard work on agents with the total number of sales down nearly a quarter for 2017 compared to 2016. volumes for Auckland in December were 1693 sales down on November’s 1925 and down on December 2016’s 1808. The median price for Auckland for December was $870,000 up
Looking at the regions there was a
mixed bag with 13 out of 16 regions seeing median price increases in December. Three of those regions experienced new record medians – Waikato up 11.7% year-on-year to $525,000 (a $35,000 increase since November 2017 and a $55,000 increase since December 2016); Bay of Plenty up 20.4% year-on-year to $598,000 (a $23,000 increase since November 2017 and a $101,500 increase since December 2016); and Wellington up 4.7% to $560,000 (a $10,000 increase since November 2017 and a $25,000 increase since December 2016). Nationally the amount of property for sale rose 9.3% (from 22,521 to 24,610) compared to 12 months agov so all up, 2018 should prove an interesting year for real estate. Please feel free to contact me anytime on 0274 966 966 to discuss your property needs.

Polo to the people! The New Zealand Polo Open may be widely considered to be New Zealand’s top polo competition. And yet, there’s a new(er) kid on the block that similarly sees illustrious players up on their ‘high horses’. JON RAWLINSON explains. Polo may be a right rural pursuit but, down here in the antipodes, it’s rapidly becoming a favourite of city folk too. Bringing a sport enjoyed by royal sorts to everyone, Heineken Urban Polo (February 24 at Shore Road Reserve, Remuera) is an exhibition tournament featuring some of the world’s best players and horses... of course, of course. “Urban polo is referred to as ‘gladiator polo’,” Kel Ainsley from Ainsley Polo explains. “It’s a three-on-three format designed to make the sport more accessible to city people. If they can’t come to the country, we bring the game to them, so there’s more exposure for the sport. And, it’s a good, fun day out too.” Ainsley Polo will provide plenty of fresh horses for the affair, as well as ensuring professional players from around the world catch their plane in time to mount up. Both Kel and his brother, Ross, will be competing, for the Glenfiddich and Haagen Dazs teams, respectively. Urban Polo follows hard on the hooves of the Land Rover NZ Polo Open – February 18, at Auckland Polo Club, Clevedon, one of this country’s oldest and most prestigious high-goal (or top level) tournaments. Both expect to provide plenty of riveting ‘divoting’ entertainment. The Taupiri Polo Club (of which Kel is president and Ross, club captain) hosted its own event, Polo in Pukekohe, in December. “Spectators have always been welcome but this was the first time we’ve run an event advertised to the general public,” says Kel. “Some friends, who play polocrosse, asked if they could jump in and we thought ‘why not’? It’s probably unheard of to have both sports on show at one event.” The Ainsley’s property doubles as home ground for the Taupiri Polo Club since it was moved north years back; a name change is

Home on the range Since moving to New Zealand approximately 14 years ago, the Ainsley brothers (Ross and Kel) have built a successful business, breeding and selling polo horses, tack and saddles, as well as providing training for horses and riders. “We chose Pukekohe because it’s close to the airport for when international clients come over and when we go overseas to compete,” Kel explains. “Auckland Polo Club [based in Clevedon] is close by, too.” “If we drive down the road for half an hour here, we’ll see 10 horses and probably try eight of them; if we did the same in Australia, we’d
probably only see a couple and not try either. The size of the country comes into it but it’s more just about the quality of the horses New Zealand produces.” Originally from New South Wales, both have represented high-goal (top level) polo teams, including Australia. “We were born and raised on a farm and have been riding all our lives,” Kel confirms, “When it comes to sports, there’s not a hell of a lot we haven’t done on a horse!” Although Ross isn’t on hand when I drop by, that’s not unusual; he’s somewhat more of a globe ‘trotter’ these days, a walking (and riding) advertisement for the business. On the other hand, Kel (along with his wife, Lucy) keeps the home fires burning.

watching people play, he can see the type of horses they’ll need.” Matching the right horses to the top pros is no easy task and neither is breeding the best. “Genetics plays a huge role. We’ve been breeding polo horses for a long time in order to get the quality of stock we have. You could have a horse which is just a freak, put any Joe Blow on him and it’ll go really well, but that person won’t get the best out of it. It really comes down to making sure players have horses best suited to them.” The pair has also competed at a top level in polocrosse, a much newer adaptation of the sport, more akin to mounted lacrosse than horseback hockey.
“I did that [follow the polo seasons] for about 20 years. I still travel to compete now and then, but I’m not based overseas anymore,” he says.
“We were introduced to polocrosse when we were at pony camp. Both sports are great fun to play and there are a lot of great people to play them with. They’re adrenalin sports; you get quite a kick, especially when you win.”
“Ross, who started before I did, is still going. Even when he’s playing abroad, he keeps our face in the game. If people are looking for a horse, he’ll hear about it and, by

Stream-line – let’s do IT! Sometimes it can be tough to know what the ‘IT crowd’ is saying; it’s almost as if they speak a different language! Fortunately, the Stream-line team has been on hand to help with common sense solutions, delivered in plain English, to a wide range of businesses.
When one of Stream-line’s satisfied customers – leading landscape design and build company, Natural Habitats – required IT solutions as sharp as their gardening tools, Stream-line director, Del Mobin, was on hand to help. “With a largely mobile team based nationwide, Natural Habitats needed a one-stop IT solution. We began by providing personalised services covering day-to-day user and server support as well as advice and implementation of new software and mobile phone plans,” he says. Financial benefits flowed with a mobile phone review and change in provider (to Spark) resulting in annual cost savings of approximately $62,000. Del and team are currently upgrading Natural Habitats’ internet connection (to fibre with Chorus), and implementing a new job management system. “We are reviewing a wide range of job management systems to find the perfect fit – one which allows for the mobility of their team and efficient reporting,” says Del “We’re assessing all available products to see how we can integrate the best technology into the business.” Natural Habitats’ founder, Graham Cleary, says these new projects are an example of Stream-line’s personal service, from which his company has benefited for more than a decade. “Stream-line’s team has provided us with all the technical and strategic IT support we’ve required
Graham Cleary from Natural Habitats (centre) with Dom Tutty (left) and Del Mobin both from Stream-line. to grow and shape our business,” he says. “From IT infrastructure to mobile and landline phone management, as well as any other related issues that may have popped up, they’ve been available at a moment’s notice to help.” Technical expertise and strategic planning advice have been invaluable, allowing his team to focus on its core business, Graham continues. “In a way, they aren’t just a service provider, they are an integral part of our team and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to any other potential client,” Graham confirms. Along with Dom Tutty, Del Mobin from Stream-line has overseen Natural Habitats’ growth (in more ways than one!) since they first began managing the business’ IT infrastructure, mobile and landline phones and more.
“It’s always nice to receive such wonderful feedback,” Del smiles. “While ensuring IT systems run smoothly is what we do best, freeing up our clients to do what they do best is what we’re really all about. We’ve obviously been right on task with Natural Habitats, that’s for sure!” Attending to IT issues of any sort and, more importantly, preventing them from occurring in the first place, has proved a successful course for Stream-line to master with regards to numerous other clients too. While nothing in life is certain, except death and taxes, many of the company’s other clients will tell you that IT issues can be added to that list. “We can’t predict the future,” says Del. “But we can prepare for it. Using the latest technology, including remote monitoring and maintenance, we can keep

downtime to a minimum, working quickly to resolve any problems that do arise. “Just as a good builder always measures twice so he only cuts once, we know effective planning is key.” What’s more, thanks to Streamline’s cloud-based solutions, no matter how wild the storm, clients’ important files are kept safe and secure. However, there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach. “With each and every new client, our work begins with a thorough consultation,” Del adds. “Take a look at our website [www.stream-line.co.nz] or call us on 0800 453 750. We’ll arrange a free, no obligation assessment and help you take your first step towards better IT solutions.”

Good fencing
makes for good neighbours! • When considering purchasing a property, it is always important to check the physical boundaries and to establish the boundary pegs, if possible, although sometimes they may have been lost or removed, especially on older properties.
Director at Fencible Law, Richard Galbraith, talks about fencing regulations and setting boundaries. On the whole our Eastern community gets on with one another as neighbours. We see very few serious disputes but with higher density housing moving into older, more established areas I thought it would be timely to remind everyone of their rights as a neighbour and perhaps provide a few commonsense tips for preventing an appearance on ‘Neighbours at War’. Any subdivision is an expensive exercise and anxiety levels can run high. As a developer it is extremely important to communicate throughout the development process with neighbours, or future neighbours. It is only natural for a home owner to be worried when a development or subdivision is beginning on adjacent land. Conversely, developers want to create homes and new sections that should add value to the area. Therefore, if the lines of communication are kept open it should be a ‘win-win’ for all parties.
which should be addressed when buying and selling a property. They may prompt questions to ask at the outset if there is any doubt concerning a boundary or fence location.
• Every title for a property will have a survey plan attached to it showing the boundaries. Buyers should look for obvious disparities between the existing layout of the section and the layout on the title.
• Fences must be on the boundary line (unless the true boundary is difficult to fence).
• If home owners selling their property know there is something not right about the boundary or fence location and doesn’t disclose it during the sales process, they can bear some liability for the misrepresentation.
• Actual boundaries were fixed by survey when the land was first subdivided and cannot be altered without the consent of anybody whose property is affected. • Just because there is an existing fence or hedge in place doesn’t mean it designates the exact legal boundary.
comply). If correct procedure is not followed, the occupier of any adjoining land may not be liable to contribute to the cost of the fence.
• In the first instance, building and repair costs are to be borne equally between adjoining owners.
• Note that the fence must be appropriate to the type of setting (eg rural or residential).
Hopefully, with good communication and a realistic view, you will be able to resolve any untoward fencng matters between you and your neighbour without the need for legal assistance.
However, if this is not the case, we recommend you contact a lawyer • Subdivision developers • Before the fence goes up, ask sooner rather than later. Proud to be lawyers in the heart of Howick
We know Jacs If it’s tough at the top, it’s no picnic at the bottom either! However, that doesn’t me ‘we the people’ need be left in the dark about what echoes through the lofty halls of parliament, does it? Despite the ‘summer hols’, it seems New Zealand’s PM has been reluctant to shirk her work, keeping at least one hand on the tiller of our ship of state of late, as these reports (based on reports from her office) indicate.
Jacs – labour’s on! During last year’s election campaign, a certain insensitive former international cricketer was lambasted for asking Ms Ardern what would happen should she fall pregnant while serving as our PM. It appears we are about to find out! “We’re both really happy,” the Prime Minister recently said, when announcing that she and her partner, Clarke
Gayford, are expecting their first child. “We wanted a family but weren’t sure it would happen for us, which has made this news unexpected but exciting.” She says she first knew of the pregnancy on October 13, soon after ‘Uncle Winston’ made the choice to form a coalition government with Ms Ardern’s Labour Party. Although this means (co-incidentally) that the PM could benefit from her government’s extension to paid parental leave, which comes into effect from April 1, she intends to take just a short break from running the country. For six weeks, deputy PM, Winston Peters, will have the helm, however Ms Ardern intends to be “available” during this time. If it’s true that (so the story goes) the Lord created the universe in six days, one has to wonder just how much Mr Peters can accomplish in six weeks as acting PM! “Clarke and I are privileged to be in the position where Clarke can stay home to be our primary

caregiver,” Ms Ardern continued. “[We] have always been clear we wanted to be parents but had been told we would need help for that to happen. That’s made this news a fantastic surprise.” We guess the moral of this story is that, in politics (as in life) one should always expect the unexpected. EastLife would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Prime Minister and prime-motherto-be. Seriously, Jacs, we’re absolutely thrilled for you!
Mourning Jim While our PM may be exemplary of Labour’s ‘young Turks’, she was full of tribute to one of the left’s old guard recently. “There are few figures in New Zealand politics like Jim Anderton. A man of deeply-held values and ideals, he was practical and compassionate. We mourn his loss, and extend our heartfelt sympathies to Jim’s wife Carole, his family and friends,” Ms Ardern said soon after Mr Anderton’s passing last month. The former Deputy PM, Labour Party President and Alliance leader was a man of integrity, compassion and dedication to public service, she added.

Right Hon grants hons One of the first official pieces of business for New Zealand’s top parliamentary ‘Right Hon’ this year was to ladle out the accolades. Although recipients of 2018 New Year’s Honours were chosen by the previous government, their ranks included at least one notable of leftward leanings. “It is a pleasure to welcome in the New Year by recognising exceptional New Zealanders,” Ms Ardern said recently. “I acknowledge a personal mentor, colleague and friend, the Honourable Annette King, for her appointment today as a Dame Companion of The New Zealand Order of Merit. “Annette’s example as a cabinet minister, electorate MP and our longest serving woman MP, is one members across parliament strive to emulate. She is well respected across the political spectrum and loved by her community.” Others to feature include former National MP, Georgina Te Heuheu (Dame Companion of The New Zealand Order of Merit) and renowned children’s author, Joy Cowley (Order of New Zealand). “As an aunty, I love reading books to my nieces, so it’s lovely to congratulate Joy Cowley,” the PM continued. “Her extraordinary contribution to literature and literacy is treasured... she has brought delight to many young New Zealanders, as well to those who read her books to them.” The full list of 2018 New Year Honours recipients is available via dpmc.govt.nz. www.eastlife.co.nz
The Captain Class From the All Blacks to the New York Yankees – and one could also make a case for the Black Caps, considering their recent run – the finest sports teams often have one thing in common: effective, efficient and respected captaincy. In this book, Sam Walker investigates whether sports’ best leaders (such as our own rescue helicopter flying superman, ‘Sir’ Richie McCaw!) are born or made. While sport may be Sam’s testing ground (or playing field) understanding leadership is universal and crucial. Whether on battlegrounds or in boardrooms, influential captains can make all the difference between profitable victories and crushing defeats. • Sam Walker: The Captain Class | RRP $38 | Viking / Penguin NZ
Droning on... Wynyard Wood consultant, RICHARD OSBORNE, whose specialties include commercial law and intellectual property law, writes on issues concerning the business community A drone is an unmanned aerial vehicle. Entry level models are usually in the form of mini, multi-rotored helicopters, are not particularly expensive and are widely available. As a result, they are seen in increasing numbers in private and public places. If flying a drone, you are a pilot and, as such, are subject to the New Zealand Civil Aviation Rules. These are permissive. The regulatory approach is to encourage training and awareness for drone pilots especially around airfields rather than have a series of ‘do not’ rules. In this respect, among other information and training sources, the Civil Aviation ( www.caa.govt. nz) and Airshare (www.airshare. co.nz) is extremely helpful. As far as Civil Aviation rules are concerned there are two parts, Parts 101 and 102. For most recreational purposes, if a drone is 25kg, or less, then Part 101 applies. The basic requirements under Part 101 are that the drone must be flown safely, in daylight, within line of eyesight, in good weather conditions, no higher than 120 m high, not too close to aerodromes or airspace, and,
importantly, in respect of fly-overs, the pilot must have the consent of those below and the controllers of the land being flown over. These last requirements are relevant to health, safety and privacy. Drones are potentially dangerous to persons and pets. The safety hazard also extends to property risk. There is no requirement for recreational drones to have insurance but there are policies available which cover recreational and commercial risks such as damage to the drone and its peripheral systems. There are links to other policies such as professional indemnity and cyber liability, statutory liability and privacy. On privacy, this is a major operational issue. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner has produced a new guidance resource about security cameras and drones for home owners, recreational drone users and retailers available on their website. In essence, the recommendation is, ‘Don’t be creepy! Don’t record activities that would otherwise
be private. Don’t point a security camera directly at a neighbour’s property, doors or windows.’ Getting consent from land owners and controllers could be more difficult if the fly-over is transient. However, use of public land areas does raise important consent issues. Public bodies such as Auckland City have specific guidelines on drone use. They are more restrictive than Part 101 requirements and it is imperative that pilots are familiar with both sets of rules. The legal risks in drone flying is illustrated by at least two cases in recent years where, in the excitement of filming an incident, drones have interfered with rescue operations leading to prosecution. The other side of drones is their use for surf rescue in Australia. So, take advantage of operational training, be aware of the rules, and consider insurance especially in relation to third party risks.
