Spring has now Sprung with bulbs flowering, and spring growth sprouting, days getting a little longer and warmer – all the signs that summer is on the way. Lots happening in the Real Estate world with plenty of enquiry, good bidding at Auction and our last months Auctions all sold under the hammer. In August the Total Focus team again took on the silent challenge to raise funds for the National Foundation for the deaf. The challenge involves being sponsored for, and undertaking 4 tasks whilst wearing earmuffs to understand and appreciate what life is like to be hearing impaired. You can still donate to this very worthy cause by visiting: https://silentleadershipchallenge2017.everydayhero.com/nz/team-total-focus

When first built some 40 years ago, this home really was ahead of its time with a walk in wardrobe, separate laundry, wide stairwell and lots of light. Downstairs a true mancave with generous garaging, plenty of room for a workshop, plus under house storage, lets be honest you can never have enough. Positioned well for all day sun, this superb family home enjoys elevation and distant views. With its generous section kids will just love to run and kick a ball. The adjoining school will appeal to families with kiddies, so you will never be late for school again. This original home is in good condition and has been very much loved and looked after over the years, with its retro kitchen, plaster ceilings and timber floors a little bit of thought & effort will transform this yesteryear gem into something really special again. A must see home before you commit to anything else. www.tfproperty.co.nz Bed

Politics, politics The easy commute of the last school holidays – Pukekohe to Botany – seems a million years ago. We are now back to the morning crawl, always worse than our return trip home in the evening.
DOWN THE rABBIT HOLE: If you can’t trust a hookah-smoking caterpillar sitting on a magic mushroom ‘who’ can you trust? Because the nature of identity is slippery at best, asking Whitford’s Natalie Hugill (aka Lilly Loca) who she is never a straight forward question. However, this burlesque beauty’s most important identity of late was Absolem (a character from Alice in Wonderland), which she played during an awardwinning performance at the recent Grand Tease NZ final. I’ve even left an hour later but that was worse. If congestion charging is introduced I wonder what the timeframe will be – 6am-10.30am and then again from 3pm to 7pm? What the heck, the Southern Motorway is nearly always congested so maybe they should just toll it! Traffic aside, I’m now looking forward to taking my eight-year-old grandson to Matilda, The Musical. In fact, this is destined to be a busy theatre month as I’m also off to see Roger Hall’s, Last Legs at the ASB Waterfront Theatre; it’s sure to generate lots of laughs. However, I didn’t laugh when I read (as we were going to print) that since her resignation as Green Party co-leader, Metiria Turei has had more nominations than anyone else for New Zealander of the Year. My goodness, what does that say about Kiwi values? Here we have someone who aspired to lead the country admitting first, to benefit fraud and then to electoral fraud! Ms Turei broke the law, admitted to knowing about similar acts of benefit fraud and
only reluctantly resigned as her party’s co-leader. She showed no remorse and her confession seemed to be about gaining political advantage which worked for a time and now seems to be attracting added admiration. I have to ask all those people who think she’s New Zealander of the Year material if that’s the kind of standards they expect of all future leaders of our country? I recognise her behaviour has highlighted a huge underlying problem that obviously needs addressing but that doesn’t justify it. She may have wanted a better life for her children but I ask, what lesson has she ultimately taught them? And what lesson are those who condone, even applaud, her actions, teaching young people – that we hold in esteem cheats and liars? I believe Ms Turei needs to be taken to task just like any other lawbreaking citizen. And, surely, Kiwis must recognise there are such a lot of wonderful people who deserve the title of New Zealander of the Year ahead of Ms Turei. As the election looms, I hope readers are taking time to look at promises being fired our way. on listening to National and Labour’s transport proposals, I see merit in both. However, I hear Chamber of Commerce head, Michael Barnett
is alarmed at Labour’s proposal to scale back the East West Link. He says before the opening of the Waterview Tunnel, NZTA traffic counts indicated some 11,500 vehicles a day came off the Western Ring Route at onehunga. This could increase to about 14,000. If the East West Link is abandoned he believes this traffic will be forced to go through the onehunga retail area adding to heavy congestion on Neilson and Church streets. “Currently 6000 trucks a day use Neilson St, many to access the Southdown Rail Freight terminal,” Mr Barnett says. “With Labour and National both confirming a third rail line between Wiri and Westfield, a substantial increase in road and rail freight access to the rail terminal is projected. The East West Link will be even more critical to the efficient access of trucks to the rail head.” Because I believe canning the East West link will further add to our congestion woes, I’m listening to all arguments. I hope you are too.

Exotic, erotic, racy, pacey – that’s the nature of burlesque yet it has evolved and undergone many transformations from those far away days of Mae West and Gypsy Rose Lee.
of burlesque talent and Natalie, who had previously won Grand Tease Hamilton 2017 as well as several individual categories in that heat, took out the supreme title with her performances.
Here in New Zealand there is renewed appetite for burlesque and as some local audiences can attest, Howick’s own Natalie Hugill, aka Lilly Loca, has spent years making it an art form. And now she’s won the country’s Supreme Grand Tease title for 2017, the industry’s highest accolade.
Lilly performed her award-winning classic burlesque act, ‘Absolem’, inspired by the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland.
“I’m ecstatic, all the hard work has paid off and it was wonderful to see such a positive reaction in Christchurch. Coming on top of my recent trip to Hollywood and then winning Grand Tease Hamilton (see August 2017 EastLife, pages 10&11) I couldn’t be more thrilled.” Grand Tease New Zealand is New Zealand’s premiere nationwide burlesque competition with winners and runners-up from three regional heats – Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch – as well as wild card entries, competing in the Grand Finale in Christchurch last month. It showcased some of the crème de la crème
She also appeared as her drag king character (who she took to Hollywood), Gary Krumbert and also performed an improvised burlesque act to Snoop Dogg! In addition to the supreme title, Natalie also won Best Neo Burlesque and also Best Costume. “It [the competition] has filled me with renewed vigour and now I would just love to see more people involved in this element of the performing arts. If anyone wanted to learn the art of burlesque I teach others through my Bambina Burlesque Academy and I am always happy to offer advice to those interested.” For more information visit www.vavavoomproductions.com and www.grandtease.com

Last Legs September 12-27, show times vary, ASB Waterfront Theatre, 138 Halsey St, Auckland City He who’s on his last legs may indeed laugh longest! In this play, New Zealand’s Deputy PM is all set to open a new wing of the Cambridge Retirement Village. While some plan to protest his arrival, others are less enthused during this story of shenanigans and skulduggery by Kiwi comedy legend, Roger Hall. This black comedy, presented by Auckland Theatre Company, engages in sex, death and politics, all of which, it seems, are best served... old! Visit atc.co.nz/whats-on.

Q&A Joan Withers with
A woman’s work may never be done but, by golly, Joan Withers won’t give up until it is! Not only has this local climbed the corporate ladder, Joan’s shattered the glass ceiling in the process. From bank teller to holding top positions in such organisations as the Radio Network, Fairfax Media, Auckland Airport, ANZ New Zealand, TVNZ and Mighty River Power, Joan is one of New Zealand’s most successful businesswomen. What’s more, she has recently published her second book.
You left school aged 16 and became a bank teller. What’s been crucial to your climbing so high on the corporate ladder since? Is there still a glass ceiling for women when it comes to top level executive positions in New Zealand? A good work ethic, being able to persuade great people to work with me, getting my MBA (Master of Business Administration) and having fantastic support at home. The ceiling still has shards so there is a lot of work to be done before NZ business can really access the full pool of available talent.
Win! A Woman’s Place by Joan Withers In this inspiring book, Joan Withers shares insights into her career success. To be in to win a copy, complete the form at eastlife.co.nz and enter this month’s prize code: ELSEP1203 One entry per person/email address; entries close September 30, 2017. Winner notified by phone or email. • Joan Withers: A Woman’s Place – Life, leadership and lessons from the boardroom | RRP $40 | Penguin Random House
You primarily made your mark in the media industry, with Fairfax and TVNZ. What is it about this industry which so inspires you? Media does get into your blood and my experience goes back to the 1970s. Media is important in so many ways especially to a properly functioning democracy. What does traditional media (such as print and TV) need to do to stay relevant in the internet age? Today’s media consumption is very different to how it was even five years ago. Content is king. Making great content available on platforms audiences want to access is the only way media can survive. Because of the massive impact of competing global giants (such as Facebook), the advertising funded model becomes challenging. Media owners need to differentiate offerings in order to monetise them. Companies are learning to distribute text, video and audio content digitally. The use of mobile devices for accessing content is growing exponentially. Journalists need to be capable of re-purposing material. In an age where everyone is a medium (via the internet), how important is it for professional news

media to set a good example with regards to integrity? Truth, accuracy, fairness and balance are fundamental cornerstones of good journalism. We need to hear competing views on issues but be able to clearly discern what is fact and what is opinion. During major news events, New Zealanders want to see, read and hear highly respected, credentialed media sources. Which has been most enjoyable/ challenging/fulfilling role you’ve undertaken in your career? Most have had all three attributes. The role at Radio i/i98FM stands out as it was my first CEO role during an incredibly exciting era of deregulation. I was able to test theories studied during my real life – and they worked! As there were only some 35 people in the business I knew everyone well and we were successful while having great fun too. Currently, you’re chair of Mercury NZ Ltd and The Warehouse Group, and a director of ANZ New Zealand. How difficult is it to juggle so many demanding roles? Does it leave enough time for family? My workload is less than many directors and almost any CEO. I try to compartmentalise my life and ensure that, whenever possible, my weekends are free. Being a director, rather than a CEO, does leave greater flexibility so I can spend time with my granddaughter and new grandson. A practical way to power through my workload is doing board prep’ early in the morning. This allows uninterrupted time which speeds up my reading and improves comprehension and retention. You’ve won a number of awards – including NZ Women of Influence, Chairperson of the Year in the Deloitte Top 200 Management Awards, CAANZ Media Excellence Award and NZ Shareholders Beacon
Award. Which of these (or any others) were you proudest to receive and why? I was incredibly proud to receive all of them. The biggest thrill was the University of Auckland Distinguished Alumni Award in 2015. Given I left school at 16, with only School Certificate as a qualification, I was especially honoured to be recognised by the University where I did my MBA. A Woman’s Place is your second book – the first being A Girl’s Guide to Business. How important is it that women (or men) who succeed in anything find the time to reach out and help others, as you do with your books? My key objective was to show young women that no matter how humble one’s background, you can make it in the business world. It is critically important we share experiences to help the next generation of business leaders reach their full potential and be the best they can be. www.eastlife.co.nz

If you could be Minister for Communications for one day, what would you do first? I would endeavour to untether TVNZ from its Crown ownership as a commercial entity, but retain a taxpayer-owned, multi platform public service broadcasting arm
– possibly through Radio New Zealand. If you could invite any three businesspeople, media personalities or authors to dinner, who would you ask? Helena Morrissey – former CEO of
the Newton Fund, founder of the 30% Club in the UK and Europe, which has driven a significant increase in the number of women on FTSE 100 boards. Dominick Dunne – a brilliant writer and raconteur who had such amazing experiences during the
halcyon days of Hollywood. Reading his articles in Vanity Fair was a treat to be savoured. Thomas Piketty – author of Capital in the Twenty-First Century. He’s a French economist whose research provides fascinating insights into the drivers of inequality.

Fijian renaissance When JESMA MAGILL started looking at Fiji as a mini break destination she didn’t anticipate the changes she would find after a 15-year absence. But rather than being dismayed she found just about everything to her taste.
We shouldn’t have been surprised that Fiji has changed – a lot. There’s now a much broader range of holiday options for the super wealthy to the super budget-conscious. The number of luxury resorts has really flourished and I suppose that’s not surprising – Fiji is a glorious tropical paradise. The ‘Greek Islands South Pacific-style’ are practically on our doorstep and there’s much more to discover than sandy beaches lined with coconut palms swaying before an azure sea. This stunning volcanic chain comprises 333 islands so when my travel buddy suggested we head to Natadola Bay Golf Resort on the mainland’s Coral Coast, my eyes glazed over. I don’t do golf. Cocktails by the pool and sunbathing, yes!
And, although I prefer to swim in the sea, with coral reefs dominating Fiji’s seascape, finding decent, all day swimming can be tricky. Travel buddy continued: “Five star InterContinental Golf Resort & Spa was voted one the 10 best beaches in the world and has the longest stretch of beach on the mainland,” he enthused. That’s when I said: “Beach? Say no more.”
Nestled amongst 35 acres of tropical gardens, the property pretty much does offer something for everyone.
There’s also the exclusive Club InterContinental, the first of its kind in Fiji, on a plateau overlooking the bay.
Just 45-minutes’ drive from Nadi Airport, the resort is eight years old and its inception was bold. The place is huge but the layout, based on a Fijian village, shows clever attention to detail and different areas are scaled down to give a better sense of intimacy.
There are 266 rooms, world-class dining, a luxury spa, three swimming pools, an 18-hole golf course, a kid’s club, wedding pavilion, state of the art conference facilities plus authentic Fijian hospitality and cultural experiences of which memories are made.
With 91 suites, this is luxury on steroids; think personalised service, even butlers! Of course, there are plenty of water sports available and I liked that jet skis weren’t for hire there. Golf buggies transport guests and luggage, and the slightly larger Bula

Bus chauffeurs people around the resort; ideal if you’ve slipped right into laid-back mode. And, for those who prefer to burn off holiday excess, the Fitbits sure get a workout.
The balcony was more an outdoor room with lounging chairs, an oversized sofa and the resort’s piece de resistance – on every balcony, a freestanding Cleopatra bath.
Our room was magic – spacious, with natural, soothing décor and a large marble bathroom. We pushed the glass sliding doors right back, preferring the sliding teak screens; great for privacy and natural ventilation at night.
Just a short walk to the beach, this is the quieter end of the resort overlooking the Lagoon, which really is the channel between the mainland and nearby Navo Island.
Restaurant options suited every guest mood from intimate to buffet largesse. Our favourite was Navo Restaurant, close to our room, away from the crowds and overlooking
the water. The cuisine lived up to expectations, showcasing the freshest seafood and local produce enhanced with island and global cuisine influences. The yellow fin tuna was the best I’ve ever had. We left the Natadola Bay feeling refreshed and that’s how Fiji felt too. It’s politically more stable, hospitality has come of age, it feels safe and it’s so close to home. All that, and a tropical paradise too.

We didn’t leave the resort at all and
the extent of our exertions consisted of walking to the massage cabana at the water’s edge, circumnavigating Navo, and complimentary yoga classes in the ultimate studio – on the lawn in the early morning, looking out over the bay.

Tricky Rotorua gallery in the frame Rotorua’s tourist attractions are well known to most New Zealanders but when SARAH ELLIS visited the thermal city recently she and her family discovered a tricky new attraction where more than 50 trick art pieces of life-size and hyper-realistic murals invite visitors to be part of amazing optical illusions.
With no work, no school and my husband away on business it seemed like a perfect time to get away with the children and have some midwinter fun.
So, with the affordable entry fee paid we headed on in to have some fun and see how we were transposed into some amazing places from standing
on cliff ledges to crossing deep ravines via a log and so much more. We all had our favourite scenes and even retraced our steps to take more photographs of those we liked best. However, we all agreed the final epic scene resulted in the best illusion which drew a great response on Facebook and Instagram. Most of us know Rotorua has some amazing places and events to visit and
experience. Even in the middle of winter, the gondola and luge, for example, had massive queues. So, for a bit of relaxation we headed to the Polynesian thermal pools for a therapeutic soak – just divine!
and I was fine, staying warm for hours – just what was needed.
However, I have to admit I was worried about getting out as the air temperature all day had been below 5 degrees Celsius but, by some miracle, the heat had seeped deep into me

But, to prove just how cold Rotorua was, the city had snow while we were there! I didn’t quite understand why so many retailers and our hotel staff were outside, filming on their cell phones. Then I learned that snow was an extremely rare event in town so what a treat to have seen it all. Once again, Rotorua surprised.

The gallery was on Fairy Springs Road just as we drove into Rotorua from Auckland. On arrival, staff members were very friendly and carefully explained the concept and the tricks behind capturing the best photos.

The best place to go within driving distance looked to be Rotorua where we had heard of a newly opened 3D Trick Art Gallery. Having seen some great photos of a similar gallery in Melbourne, we headed to the Bay of Plenty with camera phones charged.

Japan for all seasons Japan has lured many adventurers to its shores since Marco Polo introduced this fascinating country to the world in the 13th century. However, until recent years, it has held a reputation as being expensive to visit and, due to language, difficult to travel around. That has definitely changed with Air New Zealand operating daily direct flights to Tokyo (increased to 10 per week in peak months). Japan is also a great stopover option for flights to or from Europe. Wendy Wu Tours has just released its 2018/19 Japan brochure to the
New Zealand market so visitors can make full use of their stopover. This year there are more than 60 group departures across four itineraries ranging in length from nine to 14 days. The range of tours which take in the cherry blossom season and the autumn colours period has increased and there are many independent itinerary ideas that can be used to extend stays or create completely bespoke itineraries. New for 2018 is a classic tour “A Week in Japan” which is perfect for those wanting to view the iconic sites
for which the country is renowned within a tight time frame. The tour takes in such sights as Tokyo, Mount Fuji, Geisha homeland-Kyoto, Nara for its Todaiji Temple and deer park, historic Osaka as well as experiencing the Shinkansen (bullet train) and delectable Japanese cuisine. The New Zealand general manager for Wendy Wu, Paul Dymond says: “This is our biggest programme ever for Japan and probably the largest number of group departures in the New Zealand market. We have more tours and departures and we have also been able to offer the best prices ever.”
The team at Helloworld Howick have a well-respected record when it comes to placing clients on Wendy Wu tours. Shelley and Gerald have both travelled to Japan at different times; their visits have been to different areas and resulted in different experiences. The ‘Hay’day of Kiwi ice hockey is in full swing. Recently, JON RAWLINSON spoke with Oliver Hay, the youngest of five siblings to represent New Zealand on ice.
Oliver Hay – ice in his blood Keeping one’s head in the game is no easy feat, particularly when there’s an opposing roster full of guys barrelling along on blades at around 20 miles an hour with the (clandestine) intention of removing said head with big sticks! In such situations it pays to play it cool, as Ice Black and Botany Swarm winger, Oliver Hay, would attest. The latest member of the Hay family to don skates at international level was learning the ropes on the rink before he even entered a classroom. “I’ve always joked that I was born on skates,” he says. “My older brothers used to take me to trainings. I was probably only two the first time I went on the ice and I began skating when I was about four. My first game would have been when I was five or six.” While he believes this early start has helped him develop as a player – having now already represented his country at two world champs – Oliver believes a passion for and knowledge of the game is just as important as silky skills on skates. “I’ve known some pretty good players
18 | eastlife | september 2017
which team I played for, but I grew up watching the Bruins and, now that I’m living [in Boston] I love going to see them. Playing for them some day really would be a dream come true.”
From left Libby-Jean, Oliver, Joshua, Andrew and Elizabeth Hay. who have gone into the sport in their early teens but it’s not just about skill, you really have to understand the game. When you’re brought up with the sport, your hunger to play grows.” And that hunger is in no short supply among the Hay family, which features five New Zealand hockey representatives (including Oliver) and a former president of the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation in its ranks – see secondary story. Since completing his high school studies a couple of years back (on scholarship at the Canadian
Photos Mike Froger
International Hockey Academy near Ottawa), Oliver has been following the winter, splitting his playing time between Auckland and the USA. Now aged 20, he is considering whether to pursue a US or Canadian college scholarship or play professionally in Europe. Whichever path he takes, his ultimate goal is to play in the NHL. “If I get the opportunity I’ll pretty much be the first from this continent to do so; the chances would be similar to winning Lotto, though. “I wouldn’t really have a choice about
Until then cutting a fine figure skating with the Ice Blacks certainly won’t harm Oliver’s chances. Earlier this year, the team claimed silver at the Ice Hockey World Champs, narrowly missing promotion to world Division 2A. “I was pleased with how the team played,” Oliver says. It would have been great to have beaten China and won gold but they have a strong side with a decent number of professional players. Hopefully, next time we can go the whole way and be promoted; that’s the goal.” During September 7-9, the Ice Blacks will take on the Australian Mighty Roos during the Ice Hockey TransTasman Challenge. Oliver believes his team can upset the higher ranked side. “We have quite a young team, with some new players,” he says. “I think they’re a bit above us as a hockey country but we’re not that far behind and we’ll be giving it our best shot.” www.eastlife.co.nz
BoRN To SWARM Although the Botany Swarm may not have had a ‘season in the sun’ so to speak – finishing a disappointing fourth – oliver Hay is optimistic that soon enough he, like his brothers (teammates Andrew and Joshua), will claim a New Zealand Ice Hockey League title. “We haven’t had the season we wanted,” oliver concedes. “We’ve had a few injuries and things haven’t gone our way. The competition is 100 times better than it used to be. Every year, better imports are coming in and New Zealand players are stepping up too. “When the Swarm won those titles [2007, ’08, ’10 and ’11], we had the best core players in the country and imports weren’t that relevant. Now, the [Canterbury] Red Devils and [Southern] Stampede have some top imports, who have played high level professional hockey, as well as great local talent.” oliver believes the presence of better imported players is helping to grow the game in New Zealand. “Yes, 100 percent! I think there’s room for Kiwi players to step up as well, but, when you’re playing alongside guys of that quality, you definitely learn a lot.” www.eastlife.co.nz
Making Hays... ‘Hay, Hay, Hay’ would be a most apt chant when the Botany Swarm competes. And yet, when oliver Hay and his older brothers – Andrew, former captain of the Ice Blacks and a long time Swarm skipper, and Joshua, who’s also clocked plenty of ice time with both squads – hit the ice, their style is anything but ‘agricultural’! Asked if he and his brothers could be considered ice hockey’s answer to rugby’s Barrett boys, oliver laughs dismissively; fair enough too as it seems there’s more Hay in Kiwi hockey than in an Amish barn! The eldest of the brothers, Ryan – with whom the family affair with hockey began – also represented New Zealand, at u18 level. And, one of the two Hay sisters, LibbyJean, plays for the Ice Fernz. oliver fondly recalls the first time he, Andrew and Joshua competed together for their country, at the 2014 Ice Hockey World Champs
(Division 2b) in Spain. “We became the first three siblings to play together for New Zealand and I became the youngest to do so. Also, LibbyJean was playing in Italy at the same time, so that made it even more special,” he says. The siblings’ mother (Elizabeth) and father (Grant) have been heavily involved in administration – Grant is a past president of the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation and current Swarm general manager. Following the 2014 tournaments, this remarkable family was recognised by the International Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. “We had to send in our jerseys from that year,” oliver says. “It’s a real honour knowing that my jersey is hanging next to those of some of the best players to ever play the game.” He credits sibling rivalry has
beneficial in helping him perfect his skills. “I don’t go out of my way to be more ‘flash’ than them but it’s always good to have that extra competition. It’s mostly in practices where you see [the rivalry]; Josh scores a goal, I score a goal, Andrew shuts me down on D, that kind of thing,” he says. “I wouldn’t say we have a sixth sense, but they’re the two players I can best communicate with and that helps on the ice.” Even when the current crop of Hays hang up their skates, oliver believes there’s a good chance another will sprout. He says the newest addition to the family, Cruz, could be a likely ‘draft pick.’ “Libby-Jean is still with the Ice Fernz but recently took some time off to have a baby,” he explains. “Her partner, Jordan [Challis] also plays [Swarm and Ice Blacks] so I think their boy will be on skates soon enough as well!” eastlife | september 2017 |

ADVERTORIAL
Enter the dragon By Nick Krause I’m fascinated by the business card Wetex Kang hands me. It’s heavy and embossed, a respectable card for the Maori Party’s first Asian candidate (he’s standing in the Botany seat). The flipside is more intriguing and features a dragon, one of the most symbolic of Chinese emblems, and the taniwha, also a supernatural creature, this one from Maori mythology. It is not unlike a serpent or dragon. The similarities provide another little clue to the thinking, and there would have been much, behind the Maori’s Party’s move to have this pharmacist beekeeper front them in an electorate that has been ruled by National’s JamiLee Ross since 2011.
stats. Says Kang: “Botany is an ethnically diverse electorate with 39 per cent Asians.” More than 45 per cent are European and Pacific peoples about 12 per cent.
I’ve been training him for about three months – four guys including his son. Hopefully they can turn it into something more tangible for the community.”
Why stand? “I have been friends with (Tuhoe Maori activist) Tame Iti for 15 years. He was my client. We recently reconnected,” says Kang, 44.
Half his 600 hives are in Ruawai (30km south of Dargaville in Northland). “There is a teaching apiary at the college and we’ve offered apprenticeships there. There’s one at the moment. We want to take three more apprentices.”
It’s important to know Kang is multitalented, and is not geographically confined. “I’m a beekeeper. I have three businesses. I have a factory that makes health products such as protein powder, capsules. I also work for Gloriavale – I would be down there to work with them.”
Kang, of Malay and Chinese descent, points to the genealogical ties to Maori spanning several millennia. It’s all in the DNA.
Wait, what? Gloriavale, the controversial, isolated religious community on South Island’s West Coast? Yup. They need consultants too, one of Kang’s other skills. He will offer advice on anything from regulatory affairs to, er, beekeeping.
The clincher for the Maori Party though would have been the Census
Which is how he comes to be back with Tame Iti. “He’s a beekeeper.
Yes, but how did he come to join the Maori Party? “Initially it started as a joke then I went to the candidates’ workshop (which is) when I realised this was quite massive. Around 5000 years ago we had the same whakapapa (genealogy),” Kang explains. “Tame Iti joked, ‘I guess we left you fullas behind in the waka’.” Tang’s campaign will focus on immigration, cultural integration, law and order, green energy and health. Re NZ First’s Winston Peters: “He’s a bully and a racist against Maori. He wants to demolish the Maori seats.”
Wetex Kang (right) with Tame Iti. His wrap-up: We want an Asia-Pacific cultural village and Maori wardens to assist with law and order. A cultural village has been discussed with the One Pacific Party (in June the Maori Party ratified a deal with One Pacific which it hopes will broaden its support base). This village could be set up either on council land or Manurewa marae. Kang, who lives in Avondale with his wife and two children (boy and girl aged 7 and 9) is a former Kilimanjaro Drive, Botany resident. The family is looking to move to Whitford. It will be good for his bees and his family. And it comes back to family, he says. “My billboard says to celebrate diversity. It features four Chinese characters – four oceans, one family.” Authorised by Wetex Kang 337 Chapel Road, Flat Bush, Auckland

In fine festival voice The growing popularity of a cappella choirs could be attributed to movies such as Pitch Perfect, to television show, The Sing Off and even to TVNZ’s recently screened, The Naked Choir, but Janene Houghton told HELEN PERRY that Auckland’s Stellar Singers can thank their conductor and mentor, Brian Lee not only for raising the profile of a cappella singing but for the choir organising Auckland’s upcoming VoCo Festival. VoCo – Vocal Community – Festival will not only hit the high notes, but the many and varied notes of gospel, folk, jazz, barbershop and even choral singing when it comes to the stage in Auckland this month. And, among the 20 musical groups, and almost 800 performers, will be festival organiser, the Stellar Singers led by Brian Lee whose vision it was to host the event. What’s more, tucked amongst The Stellar Singers will be former Whitford local, second alto, Janene Houghton who is on the event committee and has been a member of the choir for the past three years. “We can put this whole festival down to one person with a massive musical vision and that’s our musical director Brian Lee,” Janene says. “He came to New Zealand 23 years ago with limited English and found singing in a choir not only helped him learn the language but to connect with people. “His love of voice, wide involvement in music generally and a cappella

Janene Houghton in tune with VoCo Festival. singing has shown him how a festival like this can benefit the whole community. His idea of bringing together a wide range of genres and contemporary groups on one platform, and in a professional manner, has inspired us all.”
For Janene, Brian’s enthusiasm has paid personal dividends. “Music has been a part of my life since childhood,” she explains. “My parents Henry and Norma Smith were founding members of the former Assemblies of God church,

It’s a sing thing... When the stars come out in Auckland, it’ll be time for some of the finest singers to shine. In addition to the Stellar Singers, a wide range of vocal groups will perform, including the City of Sails Chorus, Auckland Chamber Choir, Auckland Youth Choir and The Real Group from Sweden. Culminating in two concerts – VoCo Concert, September 23, Victory Convention Centre, Freemans Bay, and The Real Group Concert, September 24, Bruce Mason Centre, Takapuna – the festival also features a number of other workshops and events. singing group, Chrysallis, but it wasn’t until my husband, David and I moved to Hong Kong that I joined a choir.” With David’s job as a Cathay Pacific pilot taking the Houghton’s to live in Hong Kong where their three daughters were born, it wasn’t long before Janene discovered the American Women’s Association Choir. It was a great group for helping ex-Pats to connect but it also introduced me to the joys of being part of a choir.” In 2003, David was posted back to New Zealand and the couple bought a five-acre lifestyle block in Whitford. “I’m a city girl at heart but David came from a farming background; the Whitford property suited us both and it was a wonderful place for our girls to grow up. Back in New Zealand, Janene was again keen to reconnect with a choir so she joined the Pakuranga Choral Society. “The members were great and certainly gave me renewed confidence but then, when the King’s Singers were touring New Zealand, I attended one of the group’s master classes focused on a cappella singing and working with the Stellar Singers. “I just loved the diversity of age groups – 17 to 60 plus – the contemporary feel and the range of music styles. I decided to audition and, amazingly, I made it through although, initially, it was a huge challenge to sing without music accompaniment. There’s nowhere to hide if you make a mistake and I felt quite exposed! “But that’s where Brian’s encouragement and direction was so wonderful. He urged us not to www.eastlife.co.nz
worry about mistakes; that we would adjust. He has also kept us interested, even excited by providing a funky mix of modern a cappella music which has been inspired by the likes of The Real Group (from Sweden and here for the festival), The Idea of North, The Swingle Singers, Pentatonix and The King’s Singers.” However, while the Stellar Singers has had the opportunity to take part in many fun events – such as backing American singer/song writer, Josh Groban at the Vector Arena – twice – Janene says she also loves gigs held in small venues, country locations and communities where the choir just sings for the love of it. “Basically, we all just love to sing – together. It brings us a great deal of joy.” Although she says she is not ‘solo material’ Janene has appreciated being exposed to the works of many local composers – “I especially enjoy the works of David Hamilton who often includes parts for altos; that’s why I love his compositions,” she laughs. With rehearsals every Monday night at Baradene College, her youngest daughter at Auckland University, and the older daughters (twins) now working and living in the city, the family’s move to Remuera two years ago has worked out well for everyone including Janene who is an audiologist at Soundskills in Greenlane. “Being closer to town has certainly been an advantage while helping to co-ordinate the VoCo Festival,” she says. “Now it’s just down to the finishing touches ensuring everything is correlated and working harmoniously and that the audience hears some really diverse and enjoyable singing – all unaccompanied, of course!”
Hi school
– here I come!!!!!
Rockabye Early Learning Centre takes the care and education of young children seriously. Today, centre owner Caryn Mawkes talks about preparing children for school. Starting school is a big step for children and parents. The most essential part is to ensure you and your child settle into school as calmly and happily as possible. The transition to school can take time and it is normal for parents to feel as if they are on an emotional roller coaster. But, it is important to keep negative emotion at bay in front of your child. Children can easily pick up on feelings which might make them apprehensive about school. To support you and your child in this exciting new school chapter, here are three important steps:
Plan When deciding on a school consider the school prospectus, Education Review Office Report (ERO), contacting the school directly, word of mouth and see if you are ‘in zone’ for the school you are interested in. Look at the school’s values and see if they suit yours. Most school have websites with up-to-date and relevant information. When enrolling your child ensure you put down his/her name as early as possible to give the school time to plan for its teaching team. When your child starts school, you will incur many costs. Some of these are: purchasing a uniform, school fees, stationary, and before and after school care if required.
‘
So, today is your day! Your mountain is waiting so… get on your way. – Dr Seuss
Prepare Before starting school talk to your child about this exciting new transition using positive language. Begin with ‘transition to school visits’, where you may meet the teacher and be shown around the school. Encourage your child to take responsibility for personal belongings. This is all part of developing self-help skills which will be required at school.
Settle A little organisation goes a long way. Ensure he/she is at school well before the bell goes. This will provide a chance to sort his/her belongings, talk to peers and to settle into the day. Discuss with your child as to where after-school pick up will be. Try to stick to the same place. Talk with your child about how the day went; ask, “what was the best part of your day?” This keeps the experience positive. Talk with the teacher as to how your child is settling in. Once children gain a sense of belonging, they will confidently explore the new school surrounds, socialise and form friendships.
Early Learning Centre • Hours 7.30am-5.30pm, full & part time • Positions for children aged 0-5 years • Our family relationships are important to us. Education Review Office in April 2014 rated our centre in the top 5%. They stated: Consistent, effective teaching practice; Children happy and settled, with a strong sense of belonging; Children involved in rich literacy, numeracy and science opportunities

Keeping it Help your child avoid tooth decay YVONNE VANNOORT, from Sanctuary Dental, Bishop Dunn Place, Botany talks about helping children protect their teeth. As a dentist and a mother, this topic is dear to my heart. Tooth decay not only causes discomfort to each child with teeth sensitive to hot and cold foods and who has difficulty eating, but also causes the body stress from infections and abscesses. I see parents who are very upset when this happens especially when they do their best to ensure their children’s teeth are healthy. They also feel guilty and that it’s their fault! We all know that cleaning and diet has an influence on tooth decay. But what can be done when the cleaning regime is good and care is being taken to avoid sweet foods and drinks yet decay is still occurring?
out of balance; they are a good indicator that the body is missing something. • Use foods that are easily digested and that support the good flora of bacteria in the digestive system. These include fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kefir and kombucha. • Eat at least one nutrient-dense meal a day e.g. bone broths are easy to make and supply minerals. • Eat good quality fats. • Ensure grains, nuts and seeds are soaked to remove the phytic acids. (Google to learn more about this.)
Here are some other things that can be done to support the body: •B e aware that the body needs minerals. When minerals are low in foods consumed (e.g. processed foods or foods that don’t absorb well in the digestive system), then decay will follow. The condition of teeth is often a sign that the body is
• Food sensitivities can alter the absorption of foods. Be aware of this and seek help from a health practitioner to identify these sensitivities.

In order to look forward sometimes we need to look back. This month owner-optometrist of Eyes of Howick, KRISTINE JENSEN reflects on her past and local roots. My great-great grandparents, Charles Baverstock and Mary Cross departed Liverpool, England on September 23, 1860 and arrived in Auckland on January 22, 1861, via Melbourne. They are recorded as Mr and Mrs Baverstock in the passenger list but rumour has it that they eloped and were married by the captain during the voyage. Both from Sevenoaks in Kent, he being gentry and she the groom’s daughter, meant the relationship was frowned upon by their families. T hey brought with them some acorns – a reminder of home. And, when they settled in East Tamaki, in an area later known as Flat Bush, the acorns were planted and seven oak trees grew. They went on to have 14 children residing in their homestead, Seven Oaks, situated along what is now Baverstock Road. The Baverstock cottage is deemed an historic building and has since been relocated from the original site, (now the Chapel Rd Buddhist Temple) to be utilised as a community centre at Murphy’s Bush. The Baverstock grandchildren went on to marry into prominent families – all
now having roads bearing their names such as Cyril French Drive and Preston and Hill Roads. It is on part of the original Baverstock family farm that a new school was developed early this century. In the heart of the school are some large oak trees which were originally planted by Charles Baverstock. Planning of the school buildings was done carefully to ensure the survival of those trees and the school was aptly named, Baverstock Oaks School. Charles and Mary were keen to have a church in the area and were instrumental in helping form St Paul’s Anglican Church. This still stands today, along Chapel Road. Charles passed away in 1886 and was the first person to be buried in St Paul’s cemetery. Mary lived a lot longer and died in 1920. I recall my grandmother sharing her fond memories of visiting Granny Baverstock (Mary) and the fun times they had in Howick and Cockle Bay. I myself have lived in this area for more than 10 years, but in learning a little more of my personal ancestry, it is nice to truly be a local. The Baverstock cottage

She and six friends have been on a huge fundraising campaign – Cycle Cambodia for Cure Kids – with the aim of reaching a $35,000 target. After such a positive response – their first event at Soul Bar in the city netted $27,000 – Carmen and friends, Arna Suttie, Beth Morris, Gillian Westbrooke, Frances Bostock, Imogen Neale and Leah Tawhai, are now hoping to raise additional funds for orphanages in Cambodia before they depart on October 18. “We are all so thrilled that the round of events over the past few months, plus generous donations, has far surpassed our initial $35,000 goal,” Carmen says. “We now feel we would like to do something for the Cambodian people too; we know there is a great need there.” The Cambodia cycle will be based out

eaving skin cancers untreated is not a pretty sight and it could cost you your life. Putting off surgery will almost certainly mean the tumour will grow bigger, be more invasive and this results in a bigger operation. In many areas simple excisions can be done but skin flaps or grafts may be required on the face or legs where there is little spare skin available – and in many cases if there had been earlier detection then extensive surgery could have been unnecessary. The key to surviving skin cancer is being aware of your skin lesions and their changes and, importantly, having regular check-ups on any suspicious lesions. Where needed, dermoscopy and biopsy will improve diagnosis and aid successful treatment. Knowing the rules does not always mean we follow them, so: • Avoid sunburn. • Check dark moles for increasing size, crusting, itching or blackness. • Over 65 and noticed lots of moles and spots? Have an annual skin check. • Early diagnosis may mean only freezing or topical chemotherapy cream is needed.

Acupuncture in harmony with fertility Dr Jenny Li is a 4th generation practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). She holds a Bachelor of Acupuncture from Chengdu TCM University – founded by her great grandfather in 1930 – and a Masters degree in Health Practice from Auckland University of Technology. She is currently studying for a PhD in Clinical Acupuncture Science majoring in fertility. Today EastLife talks to Dr Li ahead of a regular column from her on using acupuncture to assist women with fertility issues. There’s no doubting the faith and appreciation expressed by mums who have benefited from fertility assistance by Dr Jenny Li or their delight in successful pregnancy outcomes.
because she realised that although New Zealanders have widely accepted acupuncture as a frontline treatment for pain conditions, many are unaware that Chinese Medicine can be used to alleviate women’s problems.
Numerous letters outline details about consultations, subsequent treatment and pregnancies which culminated in the birth of a child some thought might never happen. They express admiration for Dr Li’s knowledge and passion for helping them deal with fertility difficulties.
“Many women’s problems are due to ‘disorders’ such as unstable levels of female hormones rather than physical disease. Chinese Medicine employs the person’s own energy to regain the original balance with no use of chemical drugs which can be important for women trying to become pregnant.
Specialising in gynaecological services, fertility treatment and obstetrics with a special interest in pain management, Dr Li has owned and operated her Natural Harmony acupuncture clinic in Auckland for 11 years and is ACC accredited.
When Sonya Driver’s 30-yearold sister was diagnosed with a melanoma it made Sonya look differently at a number of beauty products including tanning options. Although still wanting a tan, she was no longer comfortable with her options; sun tanning was, in her mind, too high a risk and she felt spray tanning was laden with chemicals that easily absorb into the bloodstream. Her solution? Develop a safe, natural tan alternative. She came up with the Eco Tan range which doesn’t contain synthetic colouring and is made from natural cacao (chocolate), herbs, flower extract, fruit extract and chamomile from Mother Earth. It is the first tanning manufacturer to be certified organic by the Organic Food Chain under the Australian government. In addition to the tanning products, Sonya developed a range of vegan, natural and organic body products to complement Eco Tan. The Eco Tan range – tanning www.eastlife.co.nz
solutions that are vegan, toxic free, synthetic free and cruelty free, includes: • I nvisible Tan – Express selftanning crème • Winter Skin – Gradual tanning moisturiser • Cacao Firming Mousse – Luxurious deep bronze • Face Tan Water – suitable for oily and acne prone skin • Extreme Exfoliant Glove • Natural Coconut Sunscreen – SPF 30+, 3-hours water resistant (vegetarian) Eco by Sonya Driver – natural body care to support Eco Tan products, feature the same benefits and include: • L emongrass Cleansing Foam – for normal to oily skin. Soap free, SLS free and synthetic free. • Coconut Mint Body Wash – for normal to dry skin. Soap free, SLS free and synthetic free. • Pink Himalayan Salt Scrub • Coconut Body Milk • Coconut Deodorant • Organic Personal Outdoor Spray
“I practice integrated medicine, using both TCM and allopathic (mainstream) medicine,” she explains. “When diagnosing a client, I use mainstream hormone and blood test results among other appropriate test reports as well as traditional Chinese medical diagnostic methods.” As a qualified tertiary educator in New Zealand whose articles have been published, Dr Li says she changed the focus of her work from pain management to gynaecology and fertility
“I want them to know there are natural and effective methods to help them in the journey of making a baby before they become desperate and give up.” Dr Li offers individualised treatment programmes and says it is extremely satisfying to see a successful outcome for couples who desperately want children and have struggled to conceive. “With the benefits and holistic improvements acupuncture generates in both women and men – physiologically and psychologically – it is often more possible for couples to then reach a satisfactory result when using IVF. Acupuncture is about increasing the success of IVF but more on this next month!”

• 100ml reduced salt beef stock • 1 tbsp cornflour, mixed in cold water • 2 tbsp lite sour cream
Method Heat the olive oil in a frying pan; sauté the onions and garlic until transparent. Increase to a high heat and pan-fry the diced venison with the paprika, thyme and pepper until lightly browned. Remove and keep warm. Reduce to a medium to high heat and sauté the bacon and vegetables until soft. Add the cranberries, tomato paste, red wine, vinegar, lemon zest, mustard and stock. Combine with the diced venison and bring to the boil.
Reduce the heat, cover and simmer for an hour, or transfer to a casserole dish in a moderate oven and cook for the same length of time. If necessary, thicken with cornflour solution and return to the heat for a couple of minutes. Stir in the lite sour cream
before serving with rice or potatoes. Tip: This goulash can also be used as a pie filling, or cooked in a crockpot. For more recipes, or to buy Duncan NZ venison, see duncan-nz.com.
5+ a day’s famous five winter soups It’s soup-er, it’s doop-er it’s a simple meal for winter! Thanks to 5+ a day, here are a few quick ways to warm up on a cold evening. For more inspiration see 5aday.co.nz.
Kumara: Heat oil in a saucepan, add a chopped onion and garlic. Sauté for a few minutes. Add a pinch of chilli flakes and a pinch of ground ginger, cook for a minute before adding peeled and chopped kumara. Pour in stock or water covering the vegetables and simmer until kumara has softened. Remove from heat and puree with a stick blender. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Carrots: Sauté a chopped onion in olive oil. Mix in chopped carrots,
ground allspice. Serve with a dollop of low-fat yoghurt.
Parsnips: Wash and roughly chop parsnips and place on a roasting tray. Drizzle over olive oil, toss to coat and roast in a hot oven until golden. In a pot, heat olive oil and sauté a chopped onion with a tablespoon of dried rosemary. Add the caramelised parsnip, cover with vegetable stock and milk. Simmer for a few minutes. Blend until smooth. Season to taste. Broccoli: In a saucepan, gently add vegetable stock, simmer until carrot is cooked. Remove from heat, puree. Whisk in 1 tbsp of honey, a squeeze of lemon juice and a pinch of
sauté sliced garlic, sliced ginger and half a teaspoon each of ground coriander and ground turmeric. Add a splash of water, cook for a minute. Add roughly chopped courgettes and
coat with the spices. Pour in 400ml of stock, simmer for three minutes. Add a couple of handfuls of chopped broccoli and kale, and the juice of a lime. Simmer until vegetables are soft. Before blending, add fresh parsley. Pulse until you have a rich, green soup with flecks of kale. Serve with a sprinkle of chopped parsley.
Cauliflower: Remove leaves, rinse and cut cauliflower head into florets. Place in saucepan with four cups of water and salt. Cover and simmer until cauliflower is soft. Remove florets and place in a blender. Carefully pour in some of the cooking water, cover and blend until smooth. Season and top with drizzle of olive oil, a thin slice of parmesan.
fresh fundraising Chocoholics best get up and hit the supermarket to find their next fix should a fresh approach to fundraising live a long and healthy life. Taste
Try our latest flavours of the month and experience a range of new products with a real taste difference. EastLife is always on the lookout for new products to tantalise the tastebuds of our readers.
In-cider trading... Sent a bottle of Magner’s Cider, an EastLife writer (who’s somewhat teetotall) was driven to drink! Reserving his taste buds for suds which tickle his fancy, he promptly hit the bottle store soon after for more of this Irish delight. With many modern ciders, it seems brewers are scrambling to compare apples with pears... bananas and even goji berries. However, Magner’s Original seems to stick to the knitting, serving up real deal, all-apple cider. That said, Magner’s does provide a number of other varieties for those who are perhaps a little more adventurous than our oft cantankerous writer.
Tea time’s fabulous five Crafted using some of the world’s finest tea leaves, fruits, herbs and native New Zealand botanicals, these teas are designed to deliver a tasty drop while supporting our wellbeing. What’s more, Ti Ora, whose ambassador is the beautiful Rachel Hunter, now has five new flavours: Lemon & Honey Camomile with Manuka Leaf, Peach & Passionfruit Green Tea with Kawakawa, Cinnamon Chai Tea with Horopito, Spiced Apple & Rhubarb Fruit Tea with Manuka Leaf, and Strawberry & Pomegranate Green Tea with Kawakawa.
A most bearable liking of bean-ing Sharing round ‘round the table We have one thing to say about healthy snacks... balls! Okay, so we have a little more than that to say about Tasti Smooshed Balls. For one, they are indeed ‘tasti’ – when the EastLife team received a few bags full recently, said bags were empty in no time. We loved that they were moist, sweetened with fruit, GMO-free, vegan-friendly and contained only real, natural ingredients, so they’re meant to be good for us too. Lastly, they’re now available in five fabulous new flavours – peanut butter & caramel, almond & cashew, roasted hazelnut & cacao, apricot & cacao and berry, cashew & cacao RRP $2.29 per pack. Enough said?
vintage roundup
To ensure no animals were harmed in the making of their meal, some may accept a lack of flavour, but a certain EastLife carnivore refuses to make such a sacrifice! Fortunately, because Bean Supreme’s range of wholefood burger patties don’t shirk their work when it comes to taste, when said meat muncher heard a new variety had ‘bean’ released he was practically salivating at the prospect. Made using chickpea and cauliflower, ancient grains, turmeric and ginger, new Masala burger patties provide plenty to sink our teeth into while satisfying even the most bloodthirsty members of the family.
gewÜrztraminer – making a name Here are two across a price point that you might like to try:
Wine columnist and connoisseur, DENNIS KNILL, gives his view on new releases and awardwinning vintages. Some wine lovers prefer to drink only the tried and true aromatics with sauvignon blanc and chardonnay weighing in as the most popular choices. Thanks largely to a new generation of winemakers, Kiwis are becoming a lot more adventurous consuming a wider range of white varietals produced by some of our enterprising wineries. If its adventure that you’re after you can take your pick from riesling, pinot gris, viognier, arneis, verdelho, chenin blanc, albarino, semillon, www.eastlife.co.nz
gruner veltliner and gewürztraminer. Whilst pinot gris is the strongest varietal represented in this group, gewürztraminer is arguably the most aromatic and exotic of all. It’s a relatively uncomplicated, dry, crisp wine that’s clean and fresh on the palate. Packed with ripe fruity flavours it is easy drinking and the perfect food match with Asian or spicy cuisine. Gewürztraminer is passed up by many of our wineries and finding one, let alone finding the right one, may not be in everyone’s grasp. Even pronouncing the name can be difficult.
Villa Maria ’13 Single Vineyard Ihumatoa gewürztraminer RRP $29.95 Another award-winning wine from Villa Maria. Rich and concentrated with an array of aromatics embraced with a delicate acidity and a spiciness that will please.
Loveblock’16 gewürztraminer RRP $21.95 A good example of what this wine is all about. Deep in colour with a ripe and fresh nose. Balanced with a mouthfilling clean acidity and a fresh spicy finish makes this a well-integrated and appealing wine. eastlife | september 2017 |

Growing Food the Italian Way When in Italy, do as the Italians do! In this book, Fabian Capomolla serves up a cornucopia of gardening know-how.
Mirror, mirror on the wall who’ll be the tallest of them all? The tiniest green fingers are again toiling in soil as the Daltons Sunflowers in Kindergartens project sprouts again.
To grow the Italian way is to enjoy life itself; taking this approach, Fabian draws on his experiences of livin’ la Vida Lucca (in Lucca, Tuscany) to show how the simple things can yield so much. From how to set up and maintain a veggie patch, to an extensive A-Z plant guide, this book is designed to help readers decide what to grow and when, while also offering advice on how to avoid or rectify problems along the way. But what’s the point in knowing exactly how to grow a bounty of veggies if we don’t know how to best enjoy the fruits of our labour? Because Growing Food the Italian Way features a feast of flavoursome recipes, we can learn how to cook up classics just like Nonna used to too! • Fabian Capomolla: Growing Food the Italian Way | RRP $44.99 | Macmillan Publishers NZ

The biennial completion involves more than 11,600 pre-schoolers who, between now and December 6, will be cultivating their gardening skills and nurturing beds of sunflowers in the hope of growing the tallest and the widest sunflower heads in the land. While the long and the broad across 10 kindergarten associations will be in the running to win major prizes, all participating gardens will go in the draw to win a gardening workshop, featuring award-winning landscaper Xanthe White. At the end of the project, kindergartens will also nominate their “Daltons best little gardener,” to receive a certificate of their own and a prize pack, courtesy of Daltons. Among the 220 participating kindergartens, eight are located within the Howick/Pakuranga/Botany/Maraetai districts with each kindergarten having received a Daltons starter pack with everything the children need to grow their own Kings Seeds Skyscraper sunflowers. These flowers have the potential to grow up to four metres high – the tallest sunflower ever grown in the project’s history was a massive 3.12 metres tall, and a previous sunflower grew through the roof of a kindergarten deck, much to
the delight of the little gardeners. While there are some great prizes up for grabs, more importantly the children will learn valuable gardening skills and knowledge such as sowing seeds, caring for seedlings, planting them out in the garden and daily plant care.
The project, which runs until December 6 with winners announced on December 8, also offers a range of activities and learning opportunities teachers can integrate into aspects of the early childhood education curriculum.

Works spring from rich background This month, Monterey Gallery co-owner, HOLLY DAVIES talks about the gallery’s new exhibition featuring the inspired works of wellknown artist, Peter Hall. On the back of Monterey Gallery’s August show of recent works by Russell Hollings we are continuing our string of painting-focused exhibitions with Changes Of Direction by Peter Hall.
It’s home show time! Put chores to one side for a bit because with spring comes the Auckland Home Show with more than 500 companies exhibiting the latest in building, renovation, furnishing and home improvement. For ‘home makers’, the September show is a place where the latest products, services and trends for home and outdoor living can be seen and compared like-for-like, feature-for-feature and price-forprice. In addition, there are free seminars, expert advice, cooking demos and plenty of exciting ideas, inspiring solutions and handy discounts. Kitchens and bathrooms are always top of the list and again there is a huge array of brands and displays, with every possible bath, tap, cooker or dishwasher on show. Laundries aren’t neglected either. This year outdoor Ideas by Auckland Landscape Supplies brings together inspiration and knowhow, with 15 different landscaped outdoor garden areas on show. And, as always, landscape designers will be on hand to offer ideas on how to upgrade outdoor living areas, and to offer quotes on full garden design and implementation packages. The ever-popular ‘Ask the Building & Renovation Experts’, a free

consultation service with Finesse Residential, provides a welcome opportunity to discuss ideas, plans and inspiration with an expert. With the resurgence in wall coverings and colour, design advice is available at the ‘Design Renovate Decorate’ seminar series sponsored by Resene. Those who don’t yet have a house can choose from an wide selection of home builders at the show, covering all styles and building methods. Then there’s, The Street. Sponsored by Barfoot & Thompson, it is a fullscale walk-through feature of the latest innovations in landscaping, materials, plants and cost-effective portable home concepts. It features ready-built homes with fully landscaped sections, gardens and water features. For the final touches on that new build or renovation, home security needs have combined with new technology trends to create a vibrant new category, Home Automation. Auckland Home Show, WednesdaySunday September 6-10 at the ASB Showgrounds, Greenlane, 10am – 9pm, (6pm close on Sunday). Tickets: Adults online $18, door sales $20; seniors $16; children (under 18) no charge.
Hall’s works are charming and bright, often featuring familiar landscapes, flora and fauna and I feel as if this show couldn’t come at a better time as we are launching into spring with new blooms and warmer days just around the corner. Hall’s back story is as rich and colourful as his paintings. Born in 1938 in London, he studied at the Royal College of Art in the 1960s where he was a classmate of celebrated artists such as David Hockney and Zandra Rhodes. This was a time when traditional rules of art-making were being heavily challenged, pop art was emerging, and music and everyday fashion were being liberated from their previously conservative limitations. After his formal art and design training ended, Hall began a successful career in textile design, which took him from the UK, to Europe, South Africa and New Zealand. His experience as a designer has greatly influenced his style and approach to painting; his textile colour palettes were restricted to a maximum of 12-18 colours due to the limitations on printing screens available per design. No longer bound by strict disciplines, it is a skill which has helped Hall minimise the

use of too many unnecessary colours and shades, giving his work a bold, somewhat pop art feel. What I find so appealing in his paintings is the intentional flatness in perspective and the way he breaks up his landscapes with abstraction and pattern repetition, another visual technique that would be drawn from his abstract textile design patterns. While the paintings often have that minimised depth of field this tends to make me imagine them as paper dioramas, where you could step into Hall’s inspired world and move beyond each facet.

Get creative This month’s series from G.J. Gardner Homes on building the dream house, explores areas which call for creative design. After the basic nuts and bolts of building a new home have been sorted, then comes the exciting time when clients finalise all the things that go into their new home – making decisions about colours, materials, lights, fittings, window treatments, floor coverings and much more. It a chance to really make the new home personal; to put into practice all those ideas and thoughts that went into scrapbooks such as magazine clippings, photos of show homes, fabric, wallpaper and paint samples, special finishes and many other clever little features. This is an incredibly exciting part of the journey but it can seem daunting at times. And sometimes it can be a reality check. Some of the choices you may think of making could have a significant effect on the budget and while they need to add to the living environment they also need to be practical.
great but show all the dirt as do very dark carpets – remember children love to roll around on carpets so keep practicality in mind if you have a young family. Hard surfaces create echo and noise and while blinds may look great they can also prove cumbersome over entry and exit doors and sliders. When choosing a G.J. Gardner plan, those embarking on building will find that all the company’s homes are fully spec’d. This means all
components such as the kitchen appliances, light fittings etc are included in the price. Most G.J. Gardner plans include recommended options; we choose different specifications to suit different styles of plans and the cost of the home. This also enables us to provide a preliminary estimate of what the home will cost because all the components are contained in our computer system.
If you want to change out individual items, for things that you have chosen independently, it is easy to substitute products or components such as taps, sink, benchtops etc. The same applies to exterior choices. However, please note that G.J. Gardner uses only proven products and well known manufacturers and will not take responsibility for customer supplied materials and fittings.

If clients are not 100% confident about making some of the many choices required, one of G.J. Gardner’s colour consultants will be happy to provide advice and guidance on the styles they like and the look they want to create.”

the heritage of this most traditional of instruments with a note-d reference to science fiction.
However, this most unusual musical piece comes not from the hut of a lonely goat herd; nor was it conceived by a Swiss miss (or mister). Rather, this FAB-U-LOUS piano was created by England-based manufacturers Edelweiss and French-born (Londonraised) designer, Dio Davies.
“I took my love of films such as Tron and Blade Runner and their technological aesthetic – and the colours from my travels: tropical sunsets, flamingos and coral shells – and used crisp, dazzling acrylic to transform this hand-crafted artisan instrument into a vibrant work of art,” she adds.
“It’s a piece of furniture that starts the party!” says Dio, “Edelweiss was the only company I could find that could build this piano, and help me realise my dream. I wanted something magnificent but musically precise; and their craftsmen were able to configure the exact design, colour and materials I was looking for.” What Ms Davies was looking for was a self-playing piano which respected
But it’s not just renowned designers such as the delightful Dio who are able see their grand piano dreams come to life. In fact, anyone can configure their own design thanks to Edelweiss – see edelweisspianos.com/piano/buildyour-own for details. And, shipping to New Zealand can be arranged by contacting the company.

Influences in the market ‘ Total Focus Principal, Greg Roy areinz, gives an update on the local real estate market happenings.
With a variety of outside influences, the current property market continues to flat line. Election years traditionally bring with them a slow down in the market with many people holding off on decisions to either buy or sell while the country goes through the process of electing a government. Add to that new loan restrictions, (LVR) introduced last year, and the fact that we were naturally at the top of the property cycle anyway, what we are now experiencing is understandable. Going forward, I have seen reports of predictions both ways – that this is just the start of an overall collapse, through to predictions of another boom commencing in 2018 – time will tell! What I can tell you now, though, is that for July the REINZ figures show there were 115 sales locally.
Election years traditionally bring with them a slowdown in the market with, so it seems, many people holding off on decisions to either buy or sell while the country goes through the process of electing a government.”
The last three months have seen the number of sales slipping from 171 in May, to 132 in June, and compared to July 2016’s 151 sales, we are down in volume year on year by approx 24%. However, our median continued its recovery from the previous three months to settle at $1,090,000 – up 2% from June’s $1,069,000 and up 1.4% from July 2016’s $1,075,000. The highest median we have had was in March this year at $1,140,000 so we are down approx 4.4% from the height of the market. Days to sell dropped from last month’s 40 to 37 and the number of properties for sale in the area stayed level with realestate.co.nz showing (at the time of writing) 318 properties for sale, compared to 317 last month.
FOR SALE
For Auckland overall, the picture was slightly different with a small drop in the median month on month, and year on year. The median at $830,000 compares to last year’s July ($840,000) and this year’s June ($850,000). Looking at the regions, the North Shore and Waitakere saw decreases in their median price only since July 2016, with Waitakere being most significant at -9%. On the converse, Auckland city central moved up from $830,000 to $915,000 but this was down from last month’s $1,002,500.
Sales volumes in the Auckland area overall took a big hit from last year’s figures. Sales for July were 1666, down from June’s 1827 and when compared to July 2016’s 2399 we have a downward movement of 30% year on year. So, mixed messages all round. Nationally, the median came in at $518,000, up 3.4% year on year. For July four regions posted new record median prices year on year – Otago up 15.3% to $400,000, Nelson up 20.2% to $493,000, Northland up 23% to $455,000 and Hawke’s Bay up 25.8% to $400,000. I have seen some calls for the LVR’s to be lifted for first home buyers. Whilst this would certainly help them get on the property ladder, the market is currently giving them great opportunities to buy without having to compete with the investment buyer. Speak from the heart The eulogy is usually an integral part of a funeral – an opportunity to talk about a loved one’s life, achievements, personality and those special attributes everyone admired.
While the organ and piano are traditionally present in churches and funeral chapels, these days music and songs may be recorded and played over a speaker system. What’s more, other instruments often feature and these may be anything from a violin or clarinet through a full on rock band.
Usually it contains anecdotes and the speaker’s fond memories and is a way for mourners to hear about how their loved one was appreciated by others. It helps them make peace with the death and to share grief.
• Stories and anecdotes about the person which were meaningful to you • Highlights of the person’s life • Career • Accomplishments or humanitarian acts • Hobbies, interests and participation in any organisations • Poems, quotes or biblical references that might be significant Think about how the person would like to be remembered and include events leading up to his or her death. Say how he or she influenced your life. Talk with others who are addressing the funeral and ask what they plan to say. It will help you recall stories and ensure there is no doubling up. Ask the family if
A time for music There was a time when funeral music was mostly hymns, sometimes quite sombre and often written centuries ago. But times have changed and both music and songs at modern funerals are now very different.
If asked to give a eulogy, it is usually because you have been close to the deceased and know a lot about his or her life. Simply, it is the main speech given at a funeral to celebrate the life of the deceased.
Nevertheless writing a eulogy can be daunting so, first, gather your thoughts then jot down memories and thoughts about the deceased. You can fine tune it later. While making notes keep the following in mind:
celebrate life
there is anything special they want mentioned.
means you could omit this from your speech.
Once you have written down your thoughts, pick out the most important. You might work in chronological order or if a theme emerges, make use of it. For example, if the deceased loved sailing and you have one or more stories about days on the water, then the eulogy could use this as a theme.
Think about the length of the eulogy. Speaking time is usually two to 10 minutes, so time your speech and advise the pastor or celebrant leading the service. This way you will know if it needs cutting or whether you could add a little more.
Include humorous anecdotes as well as the serious. Importantly, keep the speech personal and meaningful to you, the deceased and the family. If including a poem, quote or biblical reference, ensure it, too, has meaning and relevance. These are not expected but including one may help people relate to your stories. A quote or poem is often used at the beginning or end of a eulogy although sometimes, other people will be earmarked to deliver a special poem or reading which
While there is no set time length for the eulogy, don’t be too long-winded or too short. Decide which aspects cannot be left out and if there is anything best left unsaid. Finally, remember that emotions can overwhelm on the day but if you have practised your eulogy, it will be easier. You have been chosen by the family because of your unique relationship to the deceased, your ability to speak or your relationship to the family. Giving the eulogy is an honour, so speak from the heart and be honest. Humour and truthfulness are always appreciated.
Not only is the format of services being personalised, the genre of music being played is too – just about anything goes. The main thing to remember is that music chosen should have been significant to the person whose life is being celebrated. It should set the tone for the service, offer comfort to those grieving and be meaningful. Remember to listen to the songs you are considering; sometimes what sounds like a great tune, may have some inappropriate words. Also, talk to family members about preferences, look at the deceased’s own music selection and consider whether the songs chosen will be easy for the mourners to sing if that is required. Sometimes a loved one will have been in a position to choose funeral songs ahead of his or her death and this should be respected. While options today are almost limitless, do keep within the bounds of good taste even if the funeral is unconventional – the music and songs really should respect and honour your loved one.
ROCHELLE FLEMING will tailor a memorable funeral, honouring your loved one which reflects their story and personality in a warm and dignified way.

Choosing a casket Dealing with the loss of a loved one and making funeral arrangements is never easy, however, Wendy Hunt, manager at Fountain Funerals says one aspect families usually wish to discuss is that of the casket and because this is a very personal decision, they often appreciate the following information. Can I use any type of casket? For most families, casket choice is an important decision; for others, it is not so important. There are a number of influencing factors when choosing a casket: • Personal taste • Religious requirements • Cultural requirements/expectations • Financial • Pre-arranged instruction “Most funeral homes offer a comprehensive range of caskets and help families select one that suits their individual requirements
and financial situation,” Wendy says. “Casket choices range from plain customwood (medium density fibreboard – MDF) up to an ornate American-style couch casket. Some options that need to be delivered from a distance or made to order, can incur a delay of 24-48 hours.” Customwood caskets made of MDF – available in most styles, with most finished in a wood grain foil veneer for a timber look which can include rimu, mahogany, hickory, cherry, maple, plain custom wood or painted to any colour a family may choose. Solid timber caskets – Traditional solid timber caskets include rimu, mahogany, oak, pine, macrocarpa and totara. Couch caskets – rectangular as opposed to the traditional casket shape, these are available in customwood (MDF), with more ornate styles available in solid timber. Also available are imported American-style
couch caskets made of solid timber or metal, in a variety of finishes. Coloured or themed caskets – some families prefer to customise a casket by painting it a particular colour, adorning it with a special scene, or having it supplied with a plain finish on which family and friends can paint or write personal messages. Eco-friendly options – most funeral directors can procure on request an untreated radiata pine casket. This style of casket which may be shaped or rectangular, is fitted with rope or wooden pine handles and may be lined with unbleached calico. Natural cane/fibre caskets are also popular. Wendy adds that some people who ask about cardboard caskets still wish to have a chapel service with pallbearers, or have the casket at home. “However, it is difficult to source an acceptable standard of cardboard casket that would not restrict choices,” she says.

Do your children, grandchildren and friends know the defining moments of your life? Do they know the day you laughed so hard you cried? Do they know your proudest achievement or your favourite teacher? Do they know who taught you to ride a bike, swim or drive a car? The sharing of your life story isn’t something that has to be done in your absence, don’t leave it up to someone else to tell your story – do it now, when you can enjoy being a part of the conversation. We plan for so many events in our life, but New Zealanders don’t appear so keen to plan for their funeral. As Funeral Directors, every day we see the difficulties families have when trying to make the decisions which will best honour their loved one’s life. Why not ease your family’s burden by letting them know your opinions ahead of time. When the time comes, these conversations can be transformed into a meaningful gathering to remember and celebrate your life. Sharing your opinions on your final farewell and the sharing of life stories combine to give your family the background and support to know the important information has been discussed in advance — so at the appropriate time they can focus on supporting each other and saying goodbye. We encourage you to take the time to talk about your life and your final wishes. Resthaven has two well appointed locations in Howick and Manurewa with a qualified team of funeral directors to take time to talk to you about honouring and celebrating your life. ‘Honouring and celebrating life’
Take time to talk
Smoking the ‘nasties’ The decision by the New Zealand military to become ‘smokefree’ a little while back saw them come into the crosshairs of a cross JON RAWLINSON as he explains. Creeping along ahead of the front line in Italy, my granddad and his men were (no doubt) rather stressed. However, the sheer fear of falling to a Nazi bullet was (somewhat) alleviated when General Bernard Montgomery rocked up, bold as (top) brass in his armoured car, or so the story goes. After enquiring into the ‘state of play’, old Monty offered the lads cigarettes. While Bernie didn’t smoke – he believed it to be a ‘filthy habit’ – he said that if my grandfather and his men made the choice to risk their skins for King and country, they’d damn well earned the right to ‘have a fag’!
parting shot
Many years later, here in Granddad’s adopted country, Kiwi soldiers will now be denied this choice. Recently, The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF)
announced it would ‘go smokefree’ by 2020. At an event in Parliament, ASH New Zealand’s Robert Beaglehole welcomed the NZDF’s decision, made on behalf of its soldiers. “This is a huge milestone; the NZDF is one of the largest employers in New Zealand with over 14,000 personnel, and the biggest government department to go smokefree... We hope this decisive action can be an example to other government agencies and major employers.” We get it. As a certain South Park character would say: ‘Smoking is bad, mm-kay.” But if men and women are capable of making the decision to put their lives on the line, shouldn’t they also be trusted to decide whether or not to not partake of a legal product which may damage their health? Apparently, it’s okay to put a gun, a
tank, or a fighter jet, for that matter, in the hands of a teenager and train them to kill, as long as we don’t let them smoke themselves while they ‘smoke’ others. Thank God the NZDF and old Beaglehole are here to make their decisions for them. By doing so they’ll doubtlessly save many lives. I’ll leave you with this. To (mis)quote a man much wiser than I, from a generation closer to that of my dear old granddad: First they came for the smokers, and I did not speak out – because I was not a smoker. Then they came for the sugar-lovers, and I did not speak out – because I did not eat junk. Then they came for the drinkers, and I did not speak out – because I was not a drinker. Then they came for me – and there was no one left to speak for me.

Overcoming overlap in charities Wynyard Wood consultant, RICHARD OSBORNE, whose specialties include commercial law and intellectual property law, writes on issues concerning the business community New Zealanders seem to be community involved, joiners, givers and committee members. This public spiritedness is reflected in the creation of a large number of charitable bodies for our population size of just under 5 million.
There are about 30,000 charities registered with the Charities Commission and approximately the same number of societies or clubs registered under the Incorporated Societies Act 1908. There is often an overlap between the two groups.
Often those voluntary associations are registered under various Acts (for example, the Charitable Trusts Act 1957, Incorporated Societies Act 1908) and are regulated by various statutory bodies (for example, the Charities Service and the Registrar of Incorporated Societies).
The question to be asked is whether the desire to join and create has led to too many of both kinds of association? Would they have more resource and focus if they considered co-operation? That is a hard question because it
so, you’re a leader? Pt 1 In searching for ‘leadership courses’, Uncle Google stated... ‘About 465,000,000 results (0.50 seconds)’. After an amazed, short lie down, in the spirit of the election, I will take a look at this elusive status sort of defined as... ‘leadership’. We seem to have more ‘leadership courses’ than fallen leaves in autumn, but... precious few real ‘leaders’. It’s not about ‘titles’, like boss, manager, supervisor, controller, person-in-charge, chairperson, superintendent et al... but, a 3be© combo of: character, competence and confidence. It’s a ‘persona’ thing. Not a ‘title’ thing. After all, we know how
some folks acquired their ‘titles’... Sadly, the term ‘leader’ does not discriminate between a good or bad one. The majority of ‘command’ appointments in an organisation, are mostly, a ‘person-in-charge’ type. There are more definitions of, and listed qualities for, a ‘leader’, than there are ‘likes’ on Facebook! For now, I give you my version, to play with: A ‘Real Leader’, defines, creates and leads the vision, the goals and the desired outcomes of an organisation, using a dynamic format, style and continuity, that inspires others to
requires surrender of the freedom to do your own thing and give up ownership of what you have created. However, legislative changes will force association members and their governing boards to face this issue. The Incorporated Societies Bill has been out for public submissions and by all accounts has been received positively. On the basis that there is no significant change, (in broad terms) the Bill will provide a modern legislative framework for the formation and incorporation of clubs and associations, along the lines of the Companies Act 1993. If some kind of consolidation of effort between one or more associations is thought useful then a branch system could be considered (currently
possible under a 1920 amendment to the 1908 Act). Depending upon tax and financial reporting, a new incorporated society could be formed and the assets and activities of existing associations transferred into it or, the provisions of the new legislation allowing formal amalgamation, could be applied. Timing for changes is not definite but legislation is likely next year, coming into effect in 2019 probably on a staged basis over the next four years. Overall, it is time for a change. The governing bodies of voluntary associations, charitable or otherwise, should start to re-consider the current operation and future opportunities. Changes are coming.

DIVERSITY KEY To RISK MANAGEMENT
Since ‘Right Hon Key’ gave another MP a turn at New Zealand politics’ top job late last year, EastLife has minded official releases from ‘our English’. However, as election day looms and all roads lead to Wellington, we set aside the minutia and conjecture to focus on one simple (yet all-encompassing) point... have the ‘powers that be’ done enough to continue to be in power?
PASSING OF BILL? First Key, then Little, Turia and even Dunne (insert pun here!) stepped away from party leadership. However, while some of the players may have changed, it seems the Government’s game remains the same. Recently launching his party’s bid for re-election, the PM laid bare what he believes to be the primary differences between National and Labour’s vision for the nation. “Voters will have an important choice [between] National’s plan to keep New Zealand moving forward... or an unstable, untested group on the left that would risk it all with

unpredictable and unclear policies,” Mr English said at the recent National campaign launch.
Income requirement has been a hot topic for a number of years due to the low interest rate environment that seems to be never-ending. Most of our advice is helping clients earn a good return while ensuring risks taken are managed properly and carefully.
“Hard working New Zealanders aren’t an ATM for the Labour Party... Here’s the thing: we don’t need more taxes, if we manage the Government finances well.”
The best way to manage risk is to diversify and also ensure liquidity. Below are a selection of Funds that, with the help of our investment committee and independent researcher, (Mercer) we are able to offer with confidence.
That’s a pretty big ‘if’ right there, Bill! Will ‘our English’ be ‘Key’ to National’s chances of securing yet another term? or will he soon prove that by saying New Zealanders don’t vote based on personalities he doesn’t know... Jacs?

that pay quarterly or annual income plus provide capital movement which has been very good in past years. Please note the income payments are not equal to the total return but can be sold to provide income if necessary. These funds can be turned into cash as quickly as one week, however, the main point to consider is market timing, e.g. if the fund has dropped due to a market movement then it may be better to wait for a recovery. While these funds might be only one part of an overall portfolio, I am simply showing that an investor can still be diverse and liquid while achieving good returns. There is no need to invest all your eggs in one basket in order to gain good return. If invested in the above four funds only, you are still spread across 120 different companies and three asset classes which are carefully selected by professionals and monitored regularly. We have more than 400 different options to choose from. These cover all asset classes such as shares, property, bonds, fixed interest, infrastructure, commodities and emerging markets. While these examples may not be appropriate for your situation, I am happy to meet with no obligation or charge to discuss investments that suit you and your family.
