HAND IN THE DIRT: Once again visitors to the Auckland Botanic Gardens are being treated to outstanding artworks in this year’s Sculpture in the Gardens Trail. Clevedon sculptor, James Wright’s Hand in the Dirt is proudly featured on this month’s cover of EastLife, just one in this impressive exhibition of extraordinary sculptures. Throughout, I was constantly amazed by the abilities, flair, know-how and inventiveness of the many people we interviewed as well as their commitment to getting things done. It seems unbelievable that nearly seven years have gone by since EastLife was launched and I have seldom had to wonder where the next article or interview was coming from. And, now, as we launch into a new year and a new decade, already I am excited about upcoming events and prospective achievers who have started to cross my path. There are so many positives to highlight although I’ve also come down hard on actions that I have had to think long and hard about and with which I haven’t always agreed. Sometimes answers to a problem seem simple when in reality

In the meantime, Kiwis across the nation last month watched as another tragedy unfolded at Whakaari/White Island in the Bay of Plenty. It was only a year ago a colleague gifted her dad a visit to the island; I had kept the contact details in hope of gifting a similar trip to my husband. That is unlikely to occur now. Like others I was shattered by the loss of life and the terrible injuries some survivors have suffered. My husband was born in Whakatane and, up until a year or two ago, I regularly visited the nearby Bay of Plenty town, Kawerau, to see an ageing friend who has since

passed away. Subsequently, I have always felt a special affinity for that part of the Bay. I now hope spirits and livelihoods will recover from this blow. In the meantime, it’s all about the future, starting with a new year, a new decade – 2020 is upon us bringing change and fresh challenges. I’m sure we will all be watching the world stage as the United Kingdom tries to deal with Brexit and, surely, we will be watching the USA too as Donald Trump embarks on an election year. Many other nations will, no doubt, be in the limelight too. But for now it’s warmest thanks to all our readers and advertisers for their support – here’s hoping for a fruitful year ahead and one which brings much better times than 2019.

NE W SH AP E TO GA RD EN S The Sculpture in the Garden trail at Auckland Botanic Gardens never fails to impress and this year’s exhibition is no different – yet again extraordinary works by extraordinary sculptors are making their impact on visitors. Twenty impressive sculptures by experienced and emerging New Zealand artists are on display until March 1, the result of the curatorial panel of Linda Tyler, Rachel de Lambert and Brett Graham pouring over scores of submissions before making their choice. Those selected are bound to delight, surprise and raise conversation. Auckland Botanic Gardens manager Jack Hobbs says everyone at the gardens has been excited by response to the display which occurs every two years. “There were 90 submissions and I feel the 20 selected have a great range of styles, themes and materials. They include art works from some of New Zealand’s best as well as from new and emerging artists,” he says. In addition to the diverse range of new, contemporary sculpture, the permanent collection of 22 sculptures, already established, add to the overall appeal of the exhibition. Over the course of summer, between 300,000 and 400,000 visitors are expected to attend the free event, which covers a two kilometre trail. What’s more, an onsite café, plus lovely picnic areas, mean there’s no need to go hungry while enjoying a few hours wandering.

Wayne Huang – REAR COMMODORE, POWER, BUCKL ANDS BEACH YACHT CLUB

Pakuranga resident and a former local board member, Wayne Huang, was last year elected Rear Commodore Power (power boats) at the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club, the first member of Asian descent to be elected to management. Wayne holds a Masters of Commerce in economics from the University of Auckland and has many years of business experience but he has long been a power boat and fishing enthusiast, a passion shared by his family and which prompted him to become a member of BBYC in 2012. We asked Wayne about his present role and its challenges.

As a member of BBYC for eight years we understand you are a great believer in being active in the community. Is BBYC your only interest in this area? No. I have served on the Sunhyhills School Board of Trustees and for several years I served on the Botany Local Board (including as deputy chairman). I was also an inaugural member of the Howick Local Board. How is it that you joined BBYC? I’d always wanted a power boat and saw it as an interest my whole family could enjoy, Buying one has meant we can enjoy days out on the water, including fishing, but as part of a club we can also enjoy social activities and have had the opportunity to meet and make many new friends. Did you expect to be elected to your new role last year and what was your reaction? Not at all so I felt humbled and privileged to be given such a responsibility. I also felt my election reflected the club’s openness, inclusiveness, and commitment to connect to the wider local community. Since taking up the position what have you been specifically involved in? I have been especially keen to integrate new settlers and youth into our culture of water sports. BBYC is a key centre for local water sports in our community. Subsequently, our first bilingual seminar on an introduction into www.eastlife.co.nz

BBYC was attended by some 150 local residents. Afterwards 14 local youth plus three adults enrolled for our ‘learn to sail’ school holiday programme and 24 new people joined the club the following month. More than half were new migrants living in the Howick ward. I am always trying to encourage participation and interest among local youth so with about 50 recently registering for BBYC’s junior learn to sail school holiday programme (starting January 13, 2020) I was thrilled. Many of these have come from local migrant families due to that successful bilingual seminar in September 2019. However, now we need more coaches and tutors. There are opportunities for volunteers to be involved and BBYC will train people to be coaches. Even though you are Rear Commodore Power, you seem to have taken an active interest in sailing too – can you also sail and if not would you consider learning to sail? I have owned my power boat for seven years and loved it, as do the family, but more and more I have become keen to sail so now I crew on a yacht every Friday for the members’ races. I’m learning as I go and I’m really enjoying it.

My role is largely as a facilitator for the group and events but I go out too, especially on fishing days; my 10 year old son loves to come too – he is mad about fishing. Our last fishing day was organised in conjunction with the Big Fish Bay & Tackle Co and had 69 entrants. It was a fun day with prizes and was open to the wider community. Is there any other area, or activity (or more) you would like to see introduced? Yes, I am really keen to foster more sister club and international co-operation. BBYC is the second largest yacht club in New Zealand with great potential to grow. We need to consider how we can fully utilise that potential. By encouraging more international student participation, including through holiday sailing and boating programmes, we will have more to invest into equipment, facilities and training. Building our water sports programmes will benefit local and young people. BBYC is keep to further develop the youth sailing facilities at Granger Point.

On the flip side, what kind of power boat activities does the club host?

added more birds to the park and I also joined the Auckland Bird Association to help me learn. Subsequently, I have been a vicepresident of the club. Definitely, my garden and my lovely birds – pheasants, canaries, finches, parrots and others – keep me busy. What do you do for a ‘day job’? I have my own educational school in Highland Park and in light of that I want to use my international experience and network links to generate interest in, and to benefit all groups I am involved with. If you could be Minister of Recreation for a day what is the first thing you would do and why? I would facilitate a nationwide water safety programmes covering boasting, sailing, on-shore fishing, beaches, lakes and so on. Water safety is more than learning to swim although that is, of course, so important in a country like New Zealand. If you could ask any three people (living or dead) to dinner who would they be and why? In terms of boating, Grant Dalton, CEO of Team New Zealand for the Americas Cup. swaps newsprint for Carbon Kopi Some readers may remember Natalie Brittan, a popular writer who worked on EastLife for several years. She’s moved on – literally – immigrating to the UK two years ago with her husband Chris and their two young children. ANGELA KEMP caught up with Natalie from her London home and heard the transition hadn’t been as smooth as she’d hoped but after some initial trials she has embarked on a new journey. Chris finally had his surgery a week before Christmas 2018.

In the EastLife office Natalie Brittan was renowned for her delicious home baking which her colleagues were lucky to sample on a numerous occasions. So, it came as no surprise when we learned she and husband, Chris, had opened a café in the UK capital. Natalie met British-born Chris while a student in Auckland working towards a BA in linguistics from the University of Auckland followed by a journalism diploma at AUT. Chris worked for an IT company in East Tamaki before he set up his own company, Ginger IT. After graduating, and on the lookout for a job, Times Media magazine editor Helen Perry quickly identified Natalie as a young talent and wasted no time employing her.

“He was discharged on Christmas Eve but was back in hospital with an infection on New Year’s Eve,” Nataie says. “I drove Chris to Bristol and stayed in a hotel with Ellie while his parents looked after Leah during the surgery. They were great and really looked after us.

And, it seems there was some foundation to her niggling fears when doctors found abnormal results during a health check for Chris.

“And, I was right, she turned out to be a fine journalist, skilled feature writer and a great baker to boot!” Helen recalls.

“Initially, we didn’t worry too much as Chris has had slightly abnormal results for most of his life. We thought the doctor was just being overly cautious,” Natalie says.

In fact, Natalie’s interest in cooking led to two of her favourite assignments – “interviewing Sky City chef Nic Watt when he first came back from London and opened MASU restaurant was big for me at that time and I loved covering Nadia Lim’s My Food Bag story,” she says.

“But, as we later found out, his decision turned out to be prudent when one of the scans came back with a shadow – a 7cm tumour on the adrenal gland. It was so big it was putting pressure on the liver as well. The usual course of action is to remove it immediately.

After leaving magazine life for a stint at AUT as its web editor, Natalie and Chris became parents to Leah, now aged five. Then on New Year’s Eve 2016 when Natalie was newly pregnant with her second child, Chris suggested he’d like to return to the UK.

“He was diagnosed in September, two months before we were due to leave New Zealand. Bringing our move forward, Chris headed off with Leah to get the ball rolling with the NHS for surgery. I waited behind with Ellie to sort out the move. I missed Leah’s third birthday and we were apart as a family for a month.”

“I was kind of expecting it at some stage of our lives but I felt the timing was awful,” she says. “The Brexit vote was still sinking in and six months later Grenfell [tower fire] would happen which seemed to compound my sense of foreboding.” www.eastlife.co.nz

Settling down to life in England, the couple initially lived with Chris’s parents in Devon while Chris went for hospital appointments in Exeter. After a fraught couple of months, including several lost referrals,

“The next six months were rough, he was constantly down with something or other, and was generally weak and in pain.” Eventually, the couple decided to relocate to London and Chris resumed work when he felt well enough. “We’re not country people and craved the pace and reliable internet of the big smoke plus all the city comforts that we were used to Auckland,” says Natalie.

On their fifth attempt (which they had decided would be their last) the Brittan’s successfully secured a corner site in Hammersmith and named it Carbon Kopi in deference to New Zealand’s affinity with black and the Malay word for coffee. Natalie says they received invaluable help setting up the business through the ‘Kiwis in London’ Facebook page. “It has been amazingly supportive and loads of Kiwi businesses offered to help out – our signage was done by a Kiwi for a great price, our baristas, Hiro and Eve, were both found through that channel and our cups are supplied by Decent Packaging (known as Innocent Packaging in NZ). Finally, we felt we were on the right path.” Chris and Natalie now take it in turns to work in the café at weekends while the other looks after Leah and two-year-old Ellie.

“We’d always toyed with the idea of opening up our own café, and after more than 20 years in IT, Chris was ready to do something different; this was going to be our chance to start anew.”

In the short time it’s been open, Carbon Kopi has been lauded as having the best coffee in London but as yet customers haven’t sampled Natalie’s tasty baking.

Although neither Chris or Natalie had very much hospitality experience, Natalie had waited tables as a student, and Chris had helped in his grandfather’s butchery as a young lad.

“I haven’t made anything for the customers because there’s alot of red tape involved to have my home kitchen certified by the council and we don’t have a kitchen on the premises.”

“Once the decision was made, it was incredibly difficult to find the right premises. Some required too much work; others didn’t have the right conditions. Some vendors didn’t accept our offer, while others would go for another offer at the last minute despite initially accepting ours and, in some cases, the demand for financial security was too high. We lost thousands in legal fees and shop design fees.”

While the journey from journalist to coffee shop owner hasn’t been easy, Natalie says with perseverance it’s possible to build a new career even in a metropolis such as London. School focused on BROAD LEARNING EXPERIENCES

With its vast, tree-lined grounds, Howick Primary School can count itself fortunate. Principal, Leyette Callister says with plenty of trees of varying degrees of climbing difficulty, children are encouraged to test their confidence and grow their tree-climbing skills. “The school is active across a wide range of initiatives,” Mrs Callister says. “We have a very active parent community which has successfully fundraised over the past two years for a new junior playground, shade cover for the large junior sandpit area and also, a “SolaGola Walkway Canopy” for the senior school. “Ongoing projects include further “SolaGola Canopies” in the junior school and development of our Garden to Table/Enviro Classroom.”

Rockabye Early Learning Centre takes the care and education of young children seriously. Today, centre owner Caryn Mawkes has some helpful tips becoming more organised.

Principal of Pigeon Mountain Primary School, Ian Dickinson, outlines the school’s education philosophy. Schools invest a great deal of time thinking strategically in order to be confident that their core statements and values are fit for purpose in this ever-changing world. At Pigeon Mountain Primary School we have spent a great deal of time in 2019 looking closely at our vision of providing ‘Education with a Heart’. We have sought out the voices of our students, teachers and parent community for their perspectives. What we have learned has filled us with great satisfaction that the vision is even more relevant now than it was in 2001 when it was first introduced. Through consultation with our community, we learned that parents felt the statement resounded with them strongly. “I think this vision truly expresses the need of the times. I have always appreciated how the school [PMPS] develops values in the students. In a world which is increasingly becoming divided, empathy and love is truly what is needed,” said one. Another said: “Small things can have a HUGE impact not only on academic and learning successes, but also on personalities and behaviour and can model them [students] on to a good path of citizenship. Our students also expressed strong opinions with some pointing to specific events and features which they appreciated. For example: “Pigeon Mountain doesn’t just teach you about maths, writing, reading and life skills. It also teaches you about kindness and how to be a good person.” “I think it is good having ‘Education with a Heart’... Monday morning assembly and talking about our school values. I love the way our school runs under that vision and that we are a school that cares about the environment too.” So, with feedback from many of our stakeholders, we reached the conclusion that heading into 2020, and beyond, providing ‘Education with a Heart’ is not only the perfect vision statement for our school but it is a way of being all those things which we aspire to bestow on our students.

Everyone seems to complain about being so busy nowadays. That’s no surprise considering the wealth of information, activities and opportunities we have at our fingertips. But it also means that one of our most precious resources, ‘time’, is becoming even harder to control. A big part of not having enough time is the fact that people are not organised enough. If you’d like to add a bit more order to your family’s life here are seven ways to become more organised. • The weekly menu – The most time-efficient way is to plan the meals a week ahead. This will make your supermarket shopping a whole lot quicker. In the morning, pull anything out of the freezer that needs to defrost during the day and chop up some veggies. If there is anything you can do early to make the dinner time rush go smoother, do it. • Family calendar – Keep a wall calendar in the kitchen with every family member’s comings and goings: school activities, work schedules, travel dates. Digital calendars may be helpful for those who are IT-savvy. • Cupboards – We all know that there is never enough storage in our homes. It is a lot easier to find things when they are stored

and labelled appropriately. Using smaller containers is a great way to organise bits and bobs i.e. – sewing box, first aid kit, arts & crafts. • Laundry – Doing a load of washing every day adds only minutes to your daily routine. This will mean you do not have to spend your entire weekend doing loads of washing. • A ‘go bag/basket’ for the car – Why not keep all the gear your family takes on outings in one bag in the car. This will ensure you always have a picnic blanket, ball, sun screen and umbrella for those impromptu moments. • Unwanted items – Fill a box with ‘things’ you’re unsure about and pack it away for a year. Be sure to write the date on the outside. If you don’t use anything in the box for an entire year, you don’t need it and can get rid of it. • Mail and correspondence – Sort mail, invitations and school newsletters when they are received. Either trash, file, respond, or take the appropriate action — don’t let mail and other papers build up. It’s always easy to think and plan when everything around you is in perfect order. Good luck in being more organised and hopefully these helpful hints will provide that fresh start you’re looking for.

With so many sweet foods and soft drinks coming to the fore over summer holidays, good dental health, especially for children, can be a challenge. So, here are a few suggestions to help children maintain good tooth care over the festive period. Take care with sticky foods which cling to teeth and have the potential to cause more harm than other foods. Raisins are often given as a healthy alternative to sweets but they are high in sugar and can stick in the grooves of the teeth thereby promoting decay. Try to keep fizzy drinks in moderation and encourage youngsters to drink plenty of water. Fizzy drinks are so acidic that they dissolve the teeth quicker than you would expect. They should be an occasional treat only!

So, in efforts to produce more sustainable packaging, Carlsberg is working to develop the world’s first paper bottle. “We are pleased with the progress we’ve made on the Green Fibre Bottle so far,” Myriam Shingleton from Carlsberg Group says. “While we are not completely there yet, the two prototypes are an important step towards realising our ultimate ambition of bringing this breakthrough to market.” Made from sustainably-sourced wood fibres, the prototypes are 100% biobased and fully recyclable. The Coca-Cola Company, The Absolut Company and L’Oréal are also working with Carlsberg on the initiative.

pork salad Preparation Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS • 4 NZ pork leg steaks, each 150g or 1cm thick • Salt and pepper • 1 tsp vegetable oil • 1 tsp sesame oil Salad: • 1/2 cucumber, finely sliced • 300g green beans • 200g sugar peas • 300g bean sprouts • 1 bunch coriander, leaves only • 2 whole oranges – segments • 200g mesclun mix or rocket or salad greens

METHOD Heat the vegetable oil and sesame oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Season the pork leg steaks with salt and pepper and fry in the pan for 4-5 minutes on each side. Set aside to rest and cool. Mix all of the dressing ingredients

playing the angles A fateful accident in his twenties had tragic consequences but it also set George Taamaru on a road he may never have travelled, as JON RAWLINSON discovered.

It’s a hot summer’s day so I’m not best pleased to walk 10 minutes or so from the closest parking spot to meet George Taamaru at his Auckland City workplace. However, after chatting with this inspirational, yet unassuming sportsman, I’m not quite so fussed about the walk back, thankful that, unlike George, I have two good legs to help me manage it. Since losing a leg in a motorbike accident, the former Panmure local has often found the road ahead of him particularly challenging. How does he do it? He makes the most of what he has. “You have to try and find the right angles and use different techniques,” he says of sport and life in general. “I do different planning than able-bodied athletes; I have to find different ways, ways which work for me. It’s all about attitude and determination, in order to achieve anything.” In recent years, this former Cook

achieved by able-bodied athletes, yet this accomplished paddler does his best to ensure nothing holds him back.

Club, George trains on the Tamaki Estuary, so tackling fresh water (as he will need to at nationals) requires added preparation.

In competition, waka ama can reach speeds averaging up to (approximately) 20 kilometres per hour over a 1km course (according to Waka Ama NZ). Considering the world record for running a kilometre stands at an average of just over 28kph, that’s pretty quick! It’s faster than most can run on two good legs.

From sprints (250-500 metres) up to marathon races (30-75kms) waka ama (or va’a) racings feature individual and team events. Next on George’s agenda is the National Sprint Championships at Lake Karipiro, Jan 12-18.

“The boats are heavier [less buoyant] on fresh water so we need to work harder. When training on salt water we sometimes use tyres to slow us down [to simulate added resistance] and we also do some fresh water training on Lake Pupuke too.”

“You need leg strength as well as upper body strength. [Able-bodied] athletes can be much faster than I am because they can kick off both feet,” George explains. “A lot more core work is needed than with kayaking and, probably, more muscles are involved with waka ama. The main difference to dragon boating [a similar sport] is that you paddle on both sides of the boat.” George might not be able to push his vessel to the highest speeds

“I compete in sprints as well but I prefer the longer races because there’s more strategy and endurance [both physical and mental] required. Also, I still need to lose more weight to be better in the sprints. ‘When I was competing in powerlifting [in the 2000s], I weighed 158kg – and I’m still a big guy. Since the 2018 World Championships in Tahiti, George has been on course to securing top honours, something he hopes to do with the New Zealand team at this year’s IVF (International Va’a Federation) World Sprint Championships in Hawaii. All going well, the Tokyo Paralympic Games is also in his sights. “Hawaii is my main focus. Getting to my fourth Paralympics is definitely a goal, but I wouldn’t ring the bell too early. In addition to his own efforts on the water, George has been involved in coaching for the past five years or so – especially with sessions suited to adaptive paddlers – helping ensure New Zealand continues to fare well in waka ama. But sport is not all about winning, he adds. “We’re doing events through Waka Ama New Zealand to introduce young ones to the sport. Developing discipline and the right attitude to life is so important whether they go on to compete or not,” he says. “I grew up going fishing on waka ama with my grandfather, so I also love that we’re helping carry on a traditional [practice].” www.eastlife.co.nz

AN UPLIFTING STORY George Taamaru isn’t bulletproof but, especially since an accident in 1992, he has given everything in life his best shot. “I was in my early twenties, in Rarotonga, when I had the [motorbike] accident. Before that, rugby league was my main sport – I was picked for a few games for the Cook Islands and played a test against Great Britain,” he says. “When you’re young you feel bulletproof, you do silly things. I didn’t know I had lost my leg until I woke up in hospital; I felt like I was nobody anymore, like I was useless. It was [devastating], very much so.” George’s road to recovery was not a case of smooth sailing, but determination proved his

This tenacious Cook Islander rose to the occasion after making contact with paralympians through his gym near Panmure’s Lagoon Pool & Leisure Centre, then known as Swimarama. From the early 2000s, he represented New Zealand at various championships including the Commonwealth Games (2002 and 2006) Para Sport sections

George also secured numerous national medals and titles before another accident (of sorts) put an end to his powerlifting ambitions in 2009. “I tore my left pectoral muscle. I tried to nurse it through swimming but every time I went to the gym, it hit me again. Every month in EastLife we take a look at official releases from the Prime Minister’s office, which often includes a little tongue-in-cheek commentary regarding political successes and disasters. However, in December, a disaster hit which puts all others into perspective. WHITE ISLAND ERUPTS Less than 10 months after a most unnatural disaster in Christchurch, a natural disaster in the Bay of Plenty has prompted a compassionate response from our Prime Minister. “To those who have lost or are missing family and friends, we share in your unfathomable grief at this moment in time, and in your sorrow,” Ms Ardern said soon after December’s White Island eruption. “We grieve with you, and we grieve with them.” Although lives were lost, others were saved, thanks to the efforts of emergency services. “I want to acknowledge the courageous decision made by first responders and those pilots who made an incredibly brave decision, under extraordinarily dangerous circumstances, to get people out. As a result of their efforts, a number of people were rescued from the island.”

CHRISTCHURCH CALLING... On 15/03/2019, a call to prayer was followed by an act of terror unparalleled in New Zealand’s history. Our Prime Minister appears determined that her call, in response, will continue to resonate. “The March 15 terror attack showed the lengths terrorists and those who support them will go to magnify their harm beyond the borders of any single country,” she said late last year. “Social media was used in an unprecedented way as a tool to promote an act of terrorism and hate. We are working together to ensure that doesn’t happen again.”

Some may argue the best way to improve children’s education is to pay teachers more, but our Government is betting that upgrading schools couldn’t hurt either. “I’ve visited plenty of schools and I’d be hard pressed to name one that didn’t have need. You hear horror stories about kids learning in damp, mouldy classrooms,” Ms Ardern said in December. “Nearly every school and community in New Zealand will benefit from this windfall investment. I’m proud that students and teachers will be the first to benefit from our infrastructure upgrade.” Money received from these one-off grants (equating to $693 per student) will allow schools to improve facilities, covering everything from roofing and guttering to heating and lighting. “This package [$400m for state schools] is a real shot in the arm for our schools, giving them the

The issue in question was a promise Mr Faafoi made to assist in an immigration matter. “Kris was not the Associate Minister of Immigration at [the] time, and he had no ministerial responsibilities for immigration matters,” Ms Ardern added. “While Kris’s communication didn’t have the clarity I expect, the Minister has assured me he never actually took any actions that sought to influence the case... This should have been dealt with in a much clearer manner and I’ve made my views on that very clear to him.” We guess that clears that up.

NO TIME TO WASTE? There was a time when plastic was considered fantastic but times and tides have changed. Following on from the Government’s ban on ‘single-use’ plastic bags, the PM plans to go even further to reduce plastic waste. “Our ban on plastic bags has already made a difference as we confront our enormous long-term challenge to tackle plastic waste,” Ms Ardern said last month. “We can ensure that New Zealand’s future is not full of throw-aways but of smart innovations and practical steps to reduce, reuse and recycle.”

Our Minister of Broadcasting may have been guilty of a little miscommunication of late but our PM has made every effort to ensure her views on Kris Faafoi’s faux pas are loud and clear.

The next step will focus on phasing out packaging and beverage containers (including meat trays, cups and takeaway food containers) made from PVC and polystyrene in exchange for recyclable alternative.

“I’ve told Minster Faafoi I expect better from him,” Ms Ardern said. “Minister Faafoi has apologised for his poor handling of this issue.”
