Has it arrived or hasn’t it? Who knows so make the most of it, could it be an early summer, how long will it last, sentiments of the property market and about as predictable. All I know is all we have is today, the past is simply history and the future a mystery. Which ties in nicely with the ending of yet another year, and of a poem I recently read, that said “live as if this is all there is” – which simply means enjoy the now. On that note have a very Merry Christmas and if you are taking a break may it be filled with happiness and good health. Thank you once again for all your support over the past year. Take care till next year QUOTE OF THE MONTH Have you liked

Christmas dreaming THOU ART VERY CLEVER: Jenna Brockett certainly knows how to use her imagination and her artistic skills. The Pakuranga graphic artist has created a puzzle book for children, which is sure to keep them absorbed for hours. What’s more, A, B Seek, may well have a few adult puzzle fans sneakily trying to spot the host of items hidden on each page. Loads of fun and perfect for the Santa sack you can read about Jenna’s creativity on page 30.

I guess, like me, there are plenty of readers out there saying, “Where has the year gone?” Unbelievably another Christmas is upon is and I’m wondering if I’ve met Santa’s ‘good girl’ criteria. If I have, and I’m in line for a gift or two, I’m ordering a Cocoon Thai massage, a winter holiday in Vanuatu and a little bit of cosmetic work on this ageing body...oh, and just an average size win on Lotto would be good too! Yes, in these busy times, sometimes it’s lovely just to dream. What’s more, last week I did manage three gorgeous dream days in Queenstown. The weather was near perfect around 23, 24 degrees, blue skies and warm right up into the evenings which remained light up to 9pm-ish. This sojourn wasn’t about sightseeing as such but we did so enjoy our Million Dollar Cruise which I rate as one of the most enjoyable and best value attractions on offer – $39 pp for 90 minutes leisurely (and informative) cruising on a part of the lake not so often visited. We stayed at the Novotel which was perfectly located lakefront and a few steps from the main mall. I’ve stayed at many a Novotel but this Novotel rates high on my

In particular, at the hotel and local restaurants, we spoke to many young people from all around the world who were in Queenstown on working holidays. I wish I could write to their mothers and tell them how proud they should be. Wherever we went these young adults were welcoming, courteous and full of banter. In a world where we so often see the both the terrible and sad side of today’s youth, it was refreshing to see so many making the most of life’s opportunities. That they were relaxed, outgoing and comfortable chatting with every age group was a pleasure to observe. It was also great to experience Queenstown’s new transport initiative – a bus ‘Go card’ system. Just purchase a card for $5, load it up with dollars, ($10 minimum) and then use it to go easily from A to B or just to see the local district. At $2 for most close-to-town zones, it is great value.
We were lucky enough to be there during the one week of free bus transport and went all the way to Arrowtown and back for no charge – absolutely fantastic. So thank-you Queenstown, we had a ball riding the buses and seeing rose-filled suburbs – loved those views from Fernhill way! Well, I’ve prattled on longer than I should so I’ll leave you all to get on with your Christmas shopping, baking and decorating but not before you take some time out to enjoy this month’s EastLife. You’ll find some great gift ideas inside, read about admirable locals, and, hopefully, enjoy our take on fashion, food, books, beauty, travel and trivia. To you all, the warmest of Christmas greetings – enjoy the season!
Helen Perry Editor P.S. I think I better ask Santa for some bathroom scales too, I have a feeling festive fare may get the better of me.

Q&A
with former howick retailer
John & Peggy Lovell
Former Howick retailer John Lovell was the face of Silks Jewellers for 25 years. His retirement mid-2017 and sale of the business, which went beyond diamonds, watches and fine jewellery to include branded costume jewellery, crystal, gifts and beautiful homewares, left a hole in the Howick business area. So, what became of this long-time local? EastLife found him living in the beachside suburb of Orewa so we asked him about his new life. What about Peggy – has she taken up new interests; do you share the same hobbies?
Since selling your Pakuranga home of 39 years and moving to Kensington Park in Orewa, have you missed your former neighbourhood?
Peg and I worked together for more than 50 years so we are used to doing things together. For Peg it was an easy transition to have me around. Obviously, we still share a lot of activities, but she now has time to enjoy singing, cooking, reading, meeting with friends, walking the beach and also making new friends. We both have time to enjoy the theatre, shows and travel.
We have wonderful memories of that time, but we wanted to downsize within Auckland and as Orewa is only 45mins away, we can still see our friends regularly. Life is a book with many chapters, and we have started a new chapter a short stroll from the beach. What about Howick? You were a well-known retailer, do you miss the buzz of business, regular customers and the village? Yes, after so many years in Howick we do miss the interaction of our regular customers, and the stimulation of the business, but not the long retail hours on our feet, and the never-ending dusting, cleaning and polishing of stock. Howick village to us was the Jewel of the East… now, Orewa is our Jewel by the Sea. What type of home have you moved into? Is it an apartment, stand-alone villa? Kensington Park has both of those but we chose a sunny two-bedroom apartment with generous living space. As it was brand new, Peggy was able to decorate it in a fabulous, light and airy coastal style which we love. It was far easier to downsize than we expected. What is it that you like about life in Kensington Park? How liberal is your lifestyle? Are there any restriction on what you can do? With more than 600 residents living here there’s a real sense of community. Being freehold there are a good mix of residents from all walks of life and ages who take pride in their properties www.eastlife.co.nz
These days people live longer so are retirement resorts/villages attracting younger retirees?
Joan and Peggy Lovell – living the good life.

and have a vested interest in ensuring the place always looks great. A quarter of the 40 acres has been allocated to beautiful landscaping and recreation areas and a residents’ association is responsible for their upkeep. This means the stunning gardens are well cared for.
Do you still do work within your own profession?
When it comes to the social side, it’s like living in a resort – no time restrictions – where people are having fun. We like Orewa beach, which is only a six-minute stroll away, and the town centre which is also an easy walk – nice shops, lots of cafes, restaurants, pubs and two supermarkets. Alice Eaves Reserve with walking tracks is also nearby; great for those with dogs.
How active are you in the Kensington Park community?
Is there anything you would like initiated at Kensington Park? We already have fabulous facilities with the heated pool, gym and sauna – there are veggie gardens and orchards, too. I think a community hall or indoor space, which could be used for hobbies, music, pilates and family functions, would be a great asset.
Of course, having been in jewellery all my life it is part of me and I’m always interested in new design and developments. I can assist family and friends but I find myself taken up with other interests now.
Quite active within my own building as I am on the Body Corp committee and also help organise social activities within our group. It’s easy to become involved with all sorts of things and it’s fun! Have you taken up new interests of hobbies? Yes, keeping fit, playing Mah Jong and planning our next trip – we just lock up and go. I have also started helping in the Kensington Park office to promote the park from a resident’s perspective, so most weekends I can be found in the sales suite talking to people about life here…it’s exciting describing all the good things on offer.
There are no age restrictions at Kensington Park as it’s not a retirement village, but it has all the great lifestyle benefits of being one i.e. it’s safe, secure and well maintained. I’m not sure of the breakdown but there is a mix of ages here. The attractiveness of the lock and up leave idea is not limited to retirees. I think the coastal location, design and structure of the park appeals to a large cross section of people, some of whom I know as they have come from Howick. If you could be chairman of Greypower for a day what would you do? I would encourage retirees to keep busy, explore new opportunities, live for the moment, be eccentric now, don’t wait for old age to wear purple – live bold! If you could ask any three people to dinner living or dead who would they be and why? Richard Branson – I like his entrepreneurial success. Ari Seth Cohen – for his outlook on fashion. Tony Bennett – for his art and singing experiences. eastlife | december 2017 |

Cycling Cambodia – country of contrasts A massive fundraising effort for Cure Kids earlier this year by CARMEN BIRD and six friends later resulted in the group embarking on a six-day cycling tour of Cambodia. This is Carmen’s account of that incredible journey. I’m not sure if I can put into words my recent experience of Cambodia. Cycling with my six ‘Cure Kids’ friends – Arna Suttie, Frances Bostock, Imogen Neale, Leah Tawhai, Beth Morris and Gillian Westbrooke – and seven others, some 350 kilometres in the scorching sun was gruelling but the warmth and struggles of the people tugged at our heart strings. Who could forget some of the faces we encountered – not me; I have thousands of photos to remind me of the places we visited – the magnificent scenery, historic buildings and the beautiful Cambodian locals we met. Despite the country’s chequered history and vast poverty, it was astonishing to see and meet such happy and welcoming people.
being the four years from 1971-1975 during which Pol Pott orchestrated the killing of more than one million of his own people. The effects or that war are still trickling down the generations. Poverty is everywhere – but still we saw smiles all day, every day. The children, in particular, were beautiful – so sweet yet streetwise, too. I now understand why it was that Angelina Jolie adopted a Cambodian orphan.
It seemed that at every stop on our tour the children gravitated towards us and we to them. One of our group, Frances Bostock, had brought with her packets of toothbrushes and toothpastes which we handed out with lollies we purchased along the way – it’s all about balance! With so many hungry children – temple kids desperate to sell you a postcard or a pair of elephant pants – our gifts seemed trivial in
the wider scheme of things but the children were so grateful. In contrast to the great poverty, the landscape was absolutely breathtaking. My photographer’s brain was constantly in overload trying to capture everything. We rode along roughly tar-sealed roads and jungle paths to hidden, overgrown temples and we travelled down red clay roads with no shelter where the clay seemed to bounce even more heat on to us.

Cambodia’s past is littered with wars, the most horrific, in my mind,

This impromptu camping was never a problem, we would use the homeowner’s toilet, which I might add, turned up some surprises. We came across all sorts in those toilets – frogs, scorpions and spiders big enough to give you nightmares! Our travels also took us to so many temples and the only way to
describe them is ‘mind-blowing’. We saw incredible structures built thousands of years ago. Most were now falling down and overgrown with astonishing trees and roots – think Tomb Raider which was filmed at the biggest and most infamous temple, Ankor Wat and at Ta Prohm temple. Though there were tourists galore visiting the same spot, they didn’t detract from the magic. Prior to the trip, I wondered at the number of temples on the itinerary, thinking we might soon be ‘all

templed out’. However, each had its own individual character and beauty. We never failed to be in awe of each new place we visited. One of the absolute highlights was the floating village of Kampong Phluk on the outskirts of Siem Reap, an incredible sight that sent my camera into overdrive once again. The village was home to about 5000 people and the houses were built high on stilts or were buoyed by the use of petrol containers. Continued on page 16

Every time we stopped we were greeted by another family. Surprisingly, as we cycled along, Yann, our Cambodian guide would spot a suitable house where we
would pull over – all 14 of us! There we would set up camp, usually near an outside table and before we knew it the owners would come out to say, hello.
D
It was like cycling in front of a hot oven with the door open; waves of hot air and sweat everywhere! Nevertheless, this was an amazing way to see a small portion of the real Cambodia – it really does take visitors off the beaten tourist track. We were frequently immersed in the gravel back roads and rural areas and it was there that we met so many beautiful people.

The many faces and flavours of Cambodia. From page 15 In the summer rainy season the village can rise by up to 10 metres and the locals live of the lake fishing and crocodile farming. It was fascinating watching children of all ages playing on the boats – not much rugby in their backyard! Again, the people were very poor and clean water was not readily available. Life expectancy was 54 years old. In our spare time we enjoyed wandering through the markets; such an eclectic, busy hive of local chaos. With stall holders desperate to make a sale, we tried to spread our purchases and share the love. Subsequently, we came home
with beads, coconut bowls, boholooking woven bags and elephant print pants. Food was another high point, I had been told it was fabulous and it was – so much fresh, delicious fruit and vegetables as well as herbs and spices plus attractivelooking and tasty dragonfruit which featured at most meals. We also ate at a few selected tour restaurants and Beth hunted out some cafes to try – Vibe was a firm favourite with beautiful, raw, Instagram-worthy smoothie bowls and drinks. I think we all felt a bit guilty at the irony of enjoying the local
Khmer food when there was so much poverty. It certainly made as appreciate our privileged lives on a whole new level. We have all come back with plans and a desire to help. After many days traversing the superb countryside we had one day in Battambang, an endearing little town with some lovely French buildings left over from a time when Cambodia was a French protectorate. We stayed in a gorgeous tropical spot on the outskirts then headed off first thing for our last day of cycling – 350 kilometres completed. What a great sense of achievement we all felt.
Our last couple of nights in Cambodia were spent in Phom Phen with a bit more market shopping and exploring the city. We had dinner at Romdeng, a restaurant set up to help disadvantaged youth – tarantula on the menu with lime sauce along with other exotic but yum dishes for those of us who weren’t quite so adventuresome. On our last evening we headed out on a river cruise, cocktails in hand as the sun set over the Mekong. It was the perfect way to end a lifechanging trip in a special country with spectacular landscapes and incredible people – worth every turn of the pedal!

Eagle-eyed golfer still in the swing While some of the world’s best female golfers faced tough conditions during the recent McKayson NZ Women’s Golf Open in Auckland, New Zealand selector, Lisa Herbert was hard at work behind the scenes co-ordinating a large team of volunteers. HELEN PERRY talked to her about the event and Lisa’s own golf career.
Golf enthusiasts turned out in their thousands to see some of the superheroes of women’s golf playing at Windross Farm, Ardmore in late September but few would have realised that on the sidelines, was arguably one of New Zealand best amateur female golfers. Twice crowned World Left Handed Women’s Golf Champion in her younger playing days, Lisa still ranks highly among the world’s leading lefty female golfers and is well regarded in all levels of amateur golf. Last year, the Howick Golf Club member led the Auckland team to victory in the NZ Women’s Masters Championship claiming the coveted Russell Grace Cup although this year the team had to settle for third. On the other hand, Lisa missed the Canterbury Shield challenge (individual honours) at the same tournament by just one shot. But there was no time to dwell on those loses; the McKayson event loomed. “They needed volunteers so I put up my hand to co-ordinate the walker scorer volunteers. On this occasion it was a good choice
20 | eastlife | december 2017
because when they weather turned foul I was tucked away inside a tent rather than out on the course recording scores!” Joking aside Lisa says the event was outstanding. “Interestingly, because Windross Farm is a links course, it probably meant the women played on longer in the bad weather than they might have on a parkland course where the number of trees would have deemed it more dangerous to continue.” Lisa acknowledges that the tournament and, in particular, Kiwi professional, Lydia Ko’s part in encouraging some of the top female players to come to New Zealand, has been a big boost for women’s golf in this country. “It’s always hard for our women to experience that kind of competition; mostly they have to go to Australia to be tested against top players. So you can imagine how excited everyone was [about the McKayson]. “On the first day I think the organisers were totally unprepared for the masses that came out to watch; it was phenomenal. Some
spectators were surprised at how exposed the course was but it can’t have much in the way of trees because of the Ardmore airfield being nearby. “It’s a very good links course even though it’s a bit of an anomaly. Links courses are usually close to the sea and can be quite sandy. This is peat based and away from the coast.” In addition to her co-ordinator’s role Lisa also helped out in the merchandise shop and had an opportunity to meet chairman of the naming sponsor, (global apparel brand McKayson), Min Cheol (M.C.) Kim. “Despite the weather, he was really enthusiastic about the tournament and his commitment for the next couple of years.” I ask is it worth it for the players to come to these far reaches. Lisa diplomatically replies: “I think it would improve the number of top players attending if the tournament was scheduled around the same time as the Australian Women’s Open in January/February. Players would be more likely to head south
if they could play back to back tournaments. As for Lisa, it’s unlikely she will be involved if the McKayson does remain in Auckland. After 14 years in the Flat Bush/Botany area, she and her family are heading to greener courses in Palmerston North. “We have previously lived in Palmy and feel the time is right to return to a less hectic lifestyle and be nearer family. My husband, Warren, is a photographer (mainly working in real estate in Auckland) which is a business that is easily relocatable. “I have a mobile coffee business with my customer run in the Manukau/East Tamaki area. I am looking at selling it and will look for employment when we shift. “A change in lifestyle and more regular working hours might mean we can both play a bit more golf!” While having played for ManawatuWhanganui in the past Lisa says she grew up on the Kapiti Coast. “My favourite golf course is still www.eastlife.co.nz
‘
Paraparaumu where, guided by my golfing parents, I started playing as a 10-year-old and just took to the game.” By the time she was in her late teens Lisa Aldridge, as she was then, was making her mark on the national scene. “I started a golf professional traineeship in the mid 1990s with the intention of becoming a coach. Then life took me in other directions and I didn’t complete the course.” But, she has no regrets. “I have a fantastic husband and two amazing kids that I am enjoying watching grow into great people – nothing could be better than that.” However, sticking with amateur golf didn’t stop this natural from proving she had what it takes to sink putts and she clearly remembers the thrill of being part of the winning Queen Sirikit Cup team when the Asia Pacific teams championship was held at Paraparaumu in 1999. “We won in an exciting play off against Chinese Taipei; that’s still right at the top of my best golfing moments.” www.eastlife.co.nz
Since becoming age qualified to play in the New Zealand Masters, Lisa has been part of the Auckland team on three occasions and was also delighted to lead the team’s win last year. “I really do prefer match play and now I mostly play pennants; I find it more exciting than stroke play. It fits my game better these days as I don’t have much time to practice and, therefore, I’m quite unpredictable.” And, that’s evident in her 1.2 handicap index – a former team mate once observed: ‘the rest of us practice and play all the time; Lisa doesn’t play as much as she could but still comes out cold and makes par.” Lisa laughs and says it depends on the course. “Paraparaumu is my favourite but I can struggle on others including Pukekohe, lovely as it is. “As a left hander, I draw the ball left to right but a lot of courses with dog legs are designed to be right to left which is the case at Pukekohe. It’s just something I have to work on. Now that I’m
I’m a bit old fashioned when it comes to grooming young talent. I’ve seen some very young players doing little else but practice, practice, practice. I believe life should be more balanced at that age with time taken to just be a teenager.”
older and wiser I have learnt to lower my expectations and cherish the times I do get to play. “I still want to play well, and be competitive, but I guess with having a family and other commitments – call it life balance – golf is not the ‘be all or end all’ for me.”
Despite being encouraged by the growing interest, Lisa says, “I’m a bit old fashioned when it comes to grooming young talent. I’ve seen some very young players doing little else but practice, practice, practice. I believe life should be more balanced at that age with time taken to just be a teenager.
While content to play when and if she can, Lisah admits with the likes of Lydia Ko and also former Pakuranga player, Cecelia Cho, who now plays the Korean LPGA circuit, there is a great deal more interest in women’s golf although pay parity with men seems a long way off.
“Many young women have turned professional in their mid-teens and I wonder how long it will be before they are burnt out or over their best when, in fact, they could be playing top golf up to their 30s and beyond. My advice is to work hard but be patient. In the long run, slow and steady can prove as successful as shooting to stardom at a young age.”
“With interest having ramped up in recent years, more girls are taking it up at a younger age and while female professionals are well paid compared to those in many codes they’re still a long way from pay parity with the men. “However, as the women’s game grows, and there is spectator demand, including for televised events, then more sponsors will come on board to gain exposure. This could lead to more money in the prize pool.”
And, with that, it seems Auckland’s loss will be Palmerston North’s gain as Lisa says she is committed to giving something back to the game and the organisation that has done so much for her during her career. “I’m happy to continue selecting for NZ Golf as long as they are happy for me to do the job and who knows where else the game will take me in time.” eastlife | december 2017 |

Tis the season Rockabye Early Learning Centre takes the care and education of young children seriously. Today, centre owner Caryn Mawkes has some helpful tips to make the festive season a homemade affair. There’s nothing quite like watching the joy on children’s faces when Christmas comes around. It’s a time for sharing, giving, gathering with family and friends so why not make it a handmade affair? Here are some suggestions to get started.
Tips for festive season pet care EastLife talks to Pet Doctors about ensuring loved pets are well cared for over the Christmas and the holiday season. As Christmas draws nearer it’s important to start thinking about fur family members and what the festive season might mean for them. Firstly, if you are heading out of town and leaving your pet in the care of a cattery or kennel, or even with friends, it’s important to make sure vaccinations are all up to date. It will put a dampener on the Christmas spirit if you turn up to drop ‘Fluffy’ at the cattery but are turned away due to lapsed vaccinations. So, be sure to check your pet’s history in advance and call your vet if you are unsure about any details. At the same time, it’s a really good idea to take care of flea and worm requirements, too. Also, beware of any little hungry hounds keen to sniff around the
Christmas tree in search of edible presents because wrapping paper is not a successful deterrent! For sure, chocolate Christmas decorations will soon become a poisonous midnight snack! At Christmas, extra food around the house is standard in most homes, especially if there are guests coming and going. So, make sure everyone in the family, including grandma and granddad, know not fall for begging eyes as it’s not just us who should watch our weight at this time of year. It’s also important to make sure toxic foods such as chocolate, grapes and avocados are out of pets’ reach. Finally, it’s worth double checking your vet clinic’s opening hours over December and January and also ensure you know the correct details for after hours care, in case you need it!
Christmas Crafts – Make decorating the Christmas tree a family affair by encouraging children to create their own decorations. Here are some child-friendly and practical decorating ideas.
• Handmade Christmas wrapping paper using your child’s art work • Use cut out shapes of your hands to form a shape of a wreath or Christmas tree • Create your own snow globe using an old jar and a special laminated family photo
Baking – Everybody enjoys receiving yummy Christmas treats. Here are some easy recipe ideas.

Christmas –
IN SANTA’S GOOD BOOKS? Come Christmas Day, it’ll be toys that will capture the attention of little ones. However, once all the madness of the day itself is over, it’s often books which become long-term favourites, such as these new and recent releases.

From a huge exploding mince pie and a pet abominable snowman, to jolly old Saint Nick being arrested for burglary, the subject matter in this book is bound to have little ones (and parents too) laughing right through the holidays.
Heart-warming foundling, Hetty Feather, is back in Jacqueline Wilson’s latest book. An unexpected gift leads Hetty into an encounter with the dreaded Matron Bottomly. Is Hetty destined to miss out on all the festive fun or will a dear friend come to save the day?

Deb’s creations keep Finley Rose, left, and Lincoln Bin super busy.

New Highbrook day care centre, Active Explorers, doesn’t have a carpenter or odd job man on the payroll. It has Nanny Deb! Handywoman, casual teacher, Girl Friday, Deb Lawson is a rare breed in today’s world as HELEN PERRY discovered. Give Deb Lawson a toaster cord, light switch, vacuum cleaner pipe, plumbing joint, wooden pallet, an array of tins or any number of building materials and before you know it she will have created a bus, a boat or maybe a bulldozer. The former primary school teacher, now turned early learning centre all-rounder, knows playtime paraphernalia doesn’t have to come from a children’s toy shop. “There are hundreds of recyclable items which can be turned into durable and captivating equipment which will keep little ones busy on and off all day,” says Deb, who is best known as Nanny Deb to the centre’s children. With as little as a hammer, some string and a few nails – well, maybe a bit more than that, a drill never goes astray – and this creative will soon have that bus, that boat or that bulldozer underway. Not to mention the likes of a music wall, a sound centre, a hole-inwww.eastlife.co.nz
one golf ramp or even a whole adventure playground for little ones. “I’ve always been a bit of a handyperson,” she admits. “I hate waste and I like making things, so that works out well.” Indeed, put the two together and what does Deb get – a wide range of preschool activities which foster children’s motor skills, imagination, sense of balance, eye/hand co-ordination and more. But, perhaps more importantly, she is building respect for resources and recycling. “I’m lucky to have a son who is a builder and a brother-in-law who is an electrician; I source a lot of items from their off cuts. Other tradies throw in bits and pieces too. Nail it all together, add a wheel and an old duvet cover and you have the makings of a sail boat or take an electrical spool, an old TV remote, some keys and a pot of paint and I’m on the way to constructing a handsome car for pre-schoolers.”
Deb says there’s always something going begging and by using a little imagination, parents and others can save money and gain a great deal of satisfaction from their carpentry efforts. “For example, you don’t have to be highly skilled to make an activity table. Once you have a suitable table or a board to form a table top, start attaching things such as light switches, counter bells, a zip, shoe laces, small tins that open and shut, a pile of pierced plastic bottle tops slid down a blunted of nail so they can twist and turn, Velcro... in fact, anything tactile that feels, good, makes a noise, moves and inspires curiosity. “Little children will spend hours turning, twisting, banging, ringing
and exploring the table and it will probably be a more durable, more exciting and less expensive than a shop bought plastic model.” While Deb never seems to tire of creating new educational ideas to foster interaction and a sense of adventure, she says at Active Explorers it is respect for the planet’s resources and commitment to recycling that impresses her. “Children here learn to clean up after themselves and to appreciate that what some people call waste, usually has many other uses. Hopefully, this is a lesson they will take with them through life. In the meantime, I’m enjoying the chance to use my skills in a practical way while still interacting with youngsters.” eastlife | december 2017 |

Wise counsel inspires
through painful times New Zealand’s health services, including the mental health system, have been under scrutiny this year with criticism of funding and care coming from many parties. EastLife spoke to one man for whom these issues have hit particularly close to home. Health workers, care organisations, patients and politicians have expressed concern at ‘cracks’ in the country’s mental health system, inadequate health funding and shortfalls across the health arena. Now, the new government has pledged to make an extra $8 billion investment in health over four years and, among its raft of objectives, it has promised to streamline cancer care in New Zealand by establishing a National Cancer Agency. It has also pledged to initiate within the first 100 days, a review of mental health and addiction services to identify gaps in services. But many are sure to ask is enough
being done quickly enough. One person who could, perhaps, pass comment, is Auckland Chamber of Commerce CEO, Michael Barnett. Last month Mr Barnett was the subject of EastLife’s Q&A but his moving responses to questions on his battle with throat cancer and the tragic loss of his son to suicide prompted us to publish these separately. Mr Barnett’s poignant insights highlight the difficulties faced by those in a health crisis but his encouraging words reveal how he coped with personal challenges. On coping with diagnosis, followed by successful but severe
treatment for throat cancer, Mr Barnett said:
over the next six months and has changed the way I live my life.
Attitude. I still have fallout from the side effects of cancer but I had an extremely supportive wife and understanding children. I was also supported by a committed employer and board.
My diagnosis was confirmed by phone on the last Friday in April. At the time I only knew I had cancer. I had no idea where, no idea how bad and my most demanding question was – “how long?” My next meeting was with my doctor on Monday morning. So that weekend I died a hundred deaths and shed a thousand tears.
Here is a piece I wrote for [former All Black] the late Jock Hobbs’ book – he was diagnosed about the same time and we communicated during my treatment. It may seem odd, but Jock and I never discussed rugby. My relationship with him was an extension of the man who gave to others, because he could. At the end of April 2010, I was diagnosed with throat cancer. Jock received similar news at about the same time. We knew each other, but not well. That changed
Before long I was in a regime of radiation and chemotherapy with overwhelming family prayer and support. Nevertheless, what I needed was to communicate with someone who knew intimately the issues I was dealing with. I approached Jock. We tended to communicate by email. Sometimes I thought Jock must be the worst typist in Wellington. He always responded

but often his messages were short or at other times a string of words, each with a message but always providing hope. The message that had the greatest impact on me, and which showed the measure of Jock, came near the end of my treatment. Anyone who has experienced cancer and the cruelty of the cure, will know the nights I refer to – lying awake, early morning, no hope, just despair and discomfort and a sense of futility. I emailed Jock and asked him “when you have those nights what do you do?” He came back to me with a string of words, some of which I will share – ‘Acknowledge’; ‘Express’; ‘Support from family and friends’; ‘Best quality professional help’; ‘Pray’; ‘Be in this moment as much as possible’; ‘Meditate’; ‘Believe’. That email created a coping platform for me throughout my treatment and recovery. The words I haven’t included, but which have had the greatest impact were, “Change the things you can”. As parents or leaders, managers or people coping with life we have events that just occur and others which bring issues to us. Often we dwell on the past in the hope that we can change it and yet all you and I can contribute to, is solutions for the future. We can be aware of the past, but we can’t change it; we can only influence the future. www.eastlife.co.nz
Jock’s other words became behavioural changes for me then and remain with me now: I had cancer – I needed to acknowledge that and tell those around me. Express – on those days of highs and lows I needed to share. Family and friends certainly helped carry the load and prayer and meditation became a meaningful part of what I do. So many people knew Jock as a business leader and New Zealand rugby player. I experienced him as a mentor, a friend and a special source of humanness. Having also tragically lost a son to suicide EastLife asked Mr Barnett whether he had faith in the Government being able to make headway in such areas and did he see how more preventative action could be taken? He responded:
me of him and working with family as they dealt with grief in different ways – all things that life had not prepared me for. I look back now and note that how he died, and why he died, has been dealt with differently by people, and sometimes not at all. One day my brother called. We talked of the bridges that link us to the people we have loved – sometimes images, sometimes music and sometimes other people. He talked about the music played at a wedding to reflect a special romantic moment for most present but that sometimes it is also the music played at a funeral for someone in the room; it represents a moment of sadness for them and extreme happiness for others. Bridges, but with different destinations, we thought.
My brother also said, when the muscle in our head has a wiring problem or is weakened by prolonged grief or the stresses of living, we don’t talk about it, in fact, we treat it with shame or silence. For some reason, we don’t accept that this ‘muscle’ should be treated in the same way we treat other muscles in our body. He suggested that people need to think about this ‘muscle’ in the same way we do other major organs in our bodies and if we did we would probably treat people with what we all refer to as ‘mental illness’, differently. I’m glad my brother called.
My son died a year ago – it was suicide so there were murmurings of mental health but nobody talked too much about that.
My brother talked about mental health. He said it surprised him that when a sportsperson damages a muscle in the leg, arm or shoulder, the muscle is rested, massaged or treated to bring it back to top performance. He noted the same thing happens for those who survive a heart attack – we don’t think twice about resting or stenting or treating that muscle so it returns to full strength albeit with a handful of pills that need to be taken for the rest of our lives.
It’s been a year of seeing faces and shapes in the street that look like him, hearing music that remind
Often with the heart surgery there is a scar which becomes a badge of honour, a graphic reminder of
I don’t think it’s the Government’s sole role which will make a difference. I wrote this piece (see below), suggesting people need to change the way they think about mental health. To achieve this will take leadership and champions; Government will have a role.
the strength and grit it takes to be confronted by a major scare and yet deal with in a way that later delivers a quality of living and life.
To sum up we asked, if in dealing with his son’s passing and also his own traumatic illness did he ever consider retiring or resigning from his role as CEO of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce? The measure of the man is reflected in this answer: “No. When I was sick with cancer I never believed I would die, I believed I would survive and, as a result, be a better person. So did my mother who prayed more than me and visited most Sundays and blessed me with Lourdes water. After all, what would I achieve from resigning?” eastlife | december 2017 |

Seek and you will find... perhaps! Pakuranga graphic artist, Jenna Brockett knows how to draw the interest of youngsters, her newly published book offering a unique and interactive challenge for little art and book lovers alike as HELEN PERRY discovered.
I spy with my little eye something beginning with A, and B, C too and, of course, D. In fact, with every turn of the page in Jenna Brockett’s new book, A, B, Seek I spy all sorts of animals and objects lurking in a black and white network of leaves. Two years in the making, this ingenious little book may be designed for children but more than one adult has been seen trying to spot just what is hidden in the foliage.
came from separate artwork I was already playing with using fairy tales and TV shows as the catalyst for finding hidden objects. I originally created pictures on a large canvas then sold them as A4 posters and also as cards but the book has been a much bigger project.”
find hiding amongst the 26 letters, this book offer hours of fun and, as Jenna says, can be explored two ways – by looking at the word list then finding the corresponding items in the picture or by studying the picture and writing down as many hidden objects as possible before comparing them to the list.
Jenna says all the pictures in A, B, Seek were hand drawn with each letter taking about 20 hours to plan, design, sketch and draw.
Aimed primarily at children aged two to 12 years, and ideal as a Christmas or birthday gift, nevertheless many people have added the book to newborn baby gift parcels, recognising that the black and white images provide early interest and stimulation for babies.
“I started the book in 2015 after first experimenting with just one letter, the letter M. People loved the idea and I could see the potential of using the whole alphabet to create an educational book which would test children’s powers of observation.
“Along with each picture there is also a list of the hidden objects on the opposite page. Each page deals with one letter of the alphabet so all the hidden objects start with that letter. Some are quite tricky; not as clear cut as children might think.”
“However, the ‘I Spy’ theme

I enjoy exploring my creativity.’ Although she has dabbled with several mediums, Jenna says she prefers to draw so preparing the book was especially pleasurable. “But I’m now working a cloth nappy design so that’ll be different!” While A, B, Seek (RRP $30) is available from selected bookstores, Jenna mostly sells from her website – www.prints-princesses.co.nz or at weekend markets. ‘Twas the 12 days A year in hair – best of Christmas... vivo haircuts 2017 This month Vivo Hair & Beauty Howick and Pakuranga reflect on hair trends that impacted on 2017
‘Tis the season to be jolly – Kristine Jensen, owner-optometrist from Eyes of Howick, gifts readers 12 fun facts about eyes and vision
It has been a remarkable year at Vivo from winning Best Hair Salon at the Best in Beauty Bauer Awards to sending two Vivo stylists to Barcelona, Spain to compete at a global, live, hands-on hair competition.
1
Eyes began to develop 550 million years ago. The simplest eyes were patches of photoreceptor protein in singlecelled animals.
With all that has been accomplished this year, and more still to come in 2018, it really was the stunning hair styles coming out of Vivo Hair Salons – created by professional Vivo stylists with magic flair – which made 2017 so memorable. Here are some of our top trends from 2017.
2
Your eyes began developing just two weeks after conception. Knowing how complex these organs are, it’s little wonder it took so long to get them right! If you ever marvelled at the miracle of life, now you know there’s even more reason to marvel; those little eyes are masterpieces in themselves!
3 4
Newborns don’t produce tears until 4-13 weeks old.
Eyeballs remain virtually the same size throughout life, while the nose and ears continue to grow.
5 6 7
An eye is composed of more than 2 million working parts. Corneas are the only tissues which don’t have blood.
Eyes heal quickly. With proper care, it takes about 48 hours for a minor corneal scratch to mend.
8
Humans blink about 12 times every minute, with each blink lasting about 1/10 of a second
9
Humans and dogs are the only species known to seek visual cues from another individual’s eyes, and dogs only do this when interacting with humans.
10
People who are blind can see their dreams if they weren’t born blind.
11
There’s actually a hole at the back of the eye (retina) where the optic nerve attaches creating a blind spot in one’s vision. You don’t notice this ‘hole’ in your vision because eyes work together to ‘fill in’ the gaps. The eyes are pretty amazing in what they can accomplish!
12
Some 39 million people, globally, suffer from blindness. Six times that number have a vision impairment of some kind. Be thankful for your good vision and healthy eyes each day of the year – and work to maintain that health by seeing your Eyes of Howick Optometrist regularly! How many of the 12 did you already know? www.eyesofhowick.co.nz
Salt Spray – you’ll be amazed at the staying power!
The Lob Known for its versatility, the lob looks perfect on any face shape. Marrying a ‘short bob’ with long to medium length hair, this hair cut strikes the perfect balance between short and long – it wears as the perfect accessory for any occasion. The Lob was also one of our most asked for salon looks in 2017 and is a style that just keeps on giving.
Hair Waves Not so much a cut but more of a style, hair waves are easily achieved with a hot styler. They were one of the most sought after looks this year and popular throughout all the seasons. While extremely chic, this stunning wave effect can take you from day to night without much fuss especially when set in place with KMS Sea
All over colour While the effectiveness of highlights may have an everlasting place in our 2017 book of style, this year also saw all-over hair colour take a prominent front seat. It was, and still is, all about shine, one tone colour and uniformity in style. All-over colour is making a definite come back with popular shades being reds and browns! And, remember, with the right stylist, colour and look can easily be maintained. So, that marks another fantastic year in the hair industry for Vivo – we now look forward to seeing our regular and new clients in the year ahead – the team can’t wait ! Check out the Vivo website for great new client offers and packages.

Your smile is one of the most simple gifts that you can give to those around you. Your smile says that you are at peace with your own world and therefore the wider world too. Part of my work as a dentist is to enhance the smile of people who seek my help. I find that many people want to improve their smile so they can feel more confident about how they present themselves to the world. To do that may involve changing some old fillings which have become discoloured in the front teeth, straightening and tidying up the position of teeth with braces (which can be clear) or
simply whitening your teeth for a brighter look. Whitening teeth at home is safe and easy and you can take it as fast or slow as you want. You can also top it up occasionally and keep your teeth white and fresh all year round. The process involves putting a peroxide gel into plastic trays which fit specifically to your teeth. You wear the trays for about an hour a day. This can be an easy and cost effective way to enhance your smile. My wish for you is to smile confidently and give your gift of a smile to many others!

labnEh – DiPPinG GooD DunK! Now’s the time to go dippy over a new range Labneh ‘dunkers’ from The Collective which offer some seriously great flavours. Labneh (pronounced lab-neigh), originates from The Mediterranean and is a natural, strained yoghurt – silky ‘n’ spreadable thick. Now, chefs from the Collective have created a delicious texture that’s similar to that of soft cheese and paired it with delicious flavours, perfect for dipping. Theses labneh dips come in 150g tubs (RRP $3.99) with five Middle Eastern inspired flavours – capsicum pesto; harissa; sweet chilli; smoked tomato; and Moroccan relish. Gluten free, they are suitable for vegetarians and are free of artificial colours, flavours and preservatives – just right for summer entertaining.
DrinK on thE bat... We might require a Red Bull to give us wings but to truly take off we could consider a Fruit Bat Passionfruit instead. The latest in Mac’s range of craft beers, this fruity little brew boasts a robust 7% ABV – it may send you flying, but set it aside if driving! – with the tart taste of passionfruit. Available in four-packs of 330ml bottles (RRP $14.99), Mac’s Fruit Bat Passionfruit IPA is available only until March 1, so we’d best drink up before the summer sets!
wiSE uP, SucKErS! Mission’s festive favourite These days, the bird’s not the only word at Christmas. And yet, despite the plethora of goodies now available, to ensure we ‘pig out’ in traditional style, no festive feast would not be complete without...

Quiet market waiting game Auckland, overall, had a median of $850,000 – down 3.2% from October 2016’s $878,000 but up slightly from last month’s $848,000.
Total Focus Principal, GREG ROY AREINZ, gives an update on the local real estate market happenings.
‘Wait and see’ seems to be the sentiment out there in the market – well, certainly in Auckland. The new Government has made lots of promises and comments on the housing market resulting in a great number of prospective buyers – and to a lesser degree, sellers – sitting on their hands in response. Figures from REINZ for October show that the market in our local area has quietened down quite a bit since the election. There were only 111 sales, which is considerably lower than the last time the market took a dip back in 2008. Normally, we only see numbers this low in January when everyone is away on holiday and not actively buying.
The median has also slipped a bit from September’s $1,086,500 to $1,065,000 and the days to sell dropped back slightly to 39. The median for October 2016 was $1,120,000 – so we are down 4.9% from there. The biggest change, however, has been stock levels. The number of properties available locally on realestate.co.nz has jumped from 306 last month to 447 currently. So, if you are in the market to buy there is definitely more to choose from. As a result, we have found that there are a number of first home buyers taking advantage of the quieter market and finally securing a home.
Total sales numbers were 1632, compared to last month at 1646, and October 2016 at 2055. Across the region, days to sell edged up slightly to 37, two days more than in 2016 and the number of properties for sale in the Auckland region has increased by 17% from the same month last year. Nationally, the median was $530,000, up 3.9% from October 2016’s $510,000. If you take the Auckland market out of the national statistics, the median price is a new record high of $440,000 which is up 8.5% from October 2016’s $405,500. Four regions had record highs – Waikato – up 9.9% to $500,000; Manawatu/Wanganui – up 11.5% to $290,000; Canterbury – up 4.7% to
$450,000 and Otago – up 14.4% to $412,000. This week also saw the release of new CVs for Auckland properties. The increases seem to be all over the place. One owner of an apartment in an inner city suburb reported an 8% CV increase while others in the same block had a 33% increase. Meanwhile an apartment in the complex immediately next door had a 50% increase and a single house on the other boundary showed a 60% increase – very confusing. Auckland Council reported that Howick had an average 45% increase – which is more in line with the increase in the median price from 2013 as opposed to that from 2014 when the last valuation was undertaken. Please feel free to contact me anytime on 0274 966 966 to discuss your property needs.

PYRAMID DESIGN SCHEMES: Some sceptics may still question who built the pyramids but, at EastLife we would never question this; it was the Germans, of course! Weihnachtspyramide (or Christmas pyramids) have been erected in homes throughout Germany – often hung from ceilings – since the Middle Ages. Thought to have originated from the Ore Mountain region, these ingenious decorations (also known as carousels) feature decorated frames and candle

Building a home? Why choose G.J.’s? This month’s series from G.J. Gardner is how to achieve your perfect home while also looking at the many reasons to build with the country’s largest residential building group. The idea of owning a brand new home doesn’t have to be a dream, and for those who are keen to build, G.J. Gardner Homes can help aspiring homeowners make that all important first step, plus a whole lot more. G.J. Gardner Homes is made up of 28 locally owned and operated franchises all over the country, making them part of your local community. This provides every client with direct access to the owner of the business who is responsible for building their new home. What’s more, during the planning stage G.J.’s are happy to go and see clients at their place after hours so there is no disruption to work schedules.
An all-inclusive building package means your local G.J. Gardner franchise will also provide a specification sheet covering every item in your home, including any extras required. To make sure every client comes away without any surprises, G.J. Gardner systems are put in place to ensure clients are provided with precise details of every aspect of their project – detailed plans, comprehensive specifications and a reliable schedule for completion with nothing left out. Because G.J.’s project manage everything, every step of the way
with a building contract covering costs, workmanship, material guarantees, completion dates and other key issues, clients can enjoy their build stress-free. Most importantly – talking to your local G.J. Gardner Homes franchise costs nothing! Customers quickly know where they stand.
At the end of the day, G.J.’s want their clients to have a good understanding of the processes and have their new home built just the way they want it. Because being able to have every customer recommend G.J.’s to their closest friend is what G.J.’s strive for every day.
JU0284
Once clients have decided on the design for a new home a comprehensive quote is usually available within 48 hours, if not sooner. This can include concept drawings showing the floor plan and elevations, a site plan and a full schedule of what is included.
Renowned for proven value, G.J.’s has excellent relationships with some of New Zealand’s most respected building material suppliers and as the country’s largest residential building group, it can purchase materials and fittings at a lower cost, therefore passing the savings onto their clients.

‘
Women’s sport (in general) is more in the spotlight these days, which is awesome, and with the contracts we have now, it’s looking up,” she adds. “More people are taking notice, which means more games, more sponsors and that’s where the money comes in.”

Howick’s ace of Hearts To reach the pinnacle in any sport, one needs drive and devotion. These qualities have been exemplified by one Auckland Hearts’ and White Ferns’ cricketer, in particular, over and over again. But, just as money makes the world go ‘round, it also keeps international sport in spin. JON RAWLINSON explains.
Good sports don’t necessarily make great money. While Rugby’s Black Ferns – who claimed their fifth Women’s World Cup earlier this year – may still be battling for professional contracts, their cricket counterparts are somewhat better off. White Fern, and Auckland Hearts’ all-rounder, Holly Huddleston, says a deal secured last year has made her (for one) better prepared to compete on the international stage. “It’s a weight off my shoulders. I don’t need to worry about having only a few hours [to train] after or before work; I can just get on with it,” the Howick local explains. “It’s important we get enough so we can really put in good performances on the park and help grow the game.” Following last year’s increase for contracted players, White Ferns receive somewhere in the 20-40k per annum ball park. I don’t ask Holly exactly how much she receives – my mum always said that was vulgar – but at least she can keep her bank balance in the black while pursuing her passion fulltime. To put this into some perspective, a former schoolmate of Holly’s who’s reached an equivalent level in his sport benefited from a pay rise last year. However, as All Black captain, Kieran Read is thought to earn more than Holly per annum; about a million dollars more. “To be honest, I don’t think I ever said more than one or two words to him back then; he was head boy and I was just a little fifth former,” she laughs. “Kieran was always good at cricket too so I actually thought he could’ve gone on to be a Black Cap.” Okay, so achieving pay parity may still be some way off, but Holly remains philosophical; ultimately it’s the number of fans in the stands which determines whether cricket’s women receive a fair amount of money for their runs. “Women’s sport (in general) is more in the spotlight these days, which is awesome, and with the contracts we have now, it’s looking up,” she adds. “More people are taking notice, which means more games, more sponsors and that’s where the money comes in.” Having grown up watching cricket with her www.eastlife.co.nz
mum, Holly was always keen on the sport, but the decision to leave a solid day job behind her in 2015 wasn’t taken lightly. “After my first year [playing for the White Ferns], my fitness let me down. I felt I couldn’t really progress in cricket because I couldn’t give as much time to it as it needed,” she says. “I wanted to play in England [Middlesex] which meant I’d need to stop working. It was very scary. My parents were awesome, really supportive. They said, as it was my dream and I only had a short time when I’d be able to do it, they would help me out.” While playing English County Cricket can result in quite the windfall for batsmen, its batswomen are not paid to play, although Holly confirms her accommodation was provided and she secured some paid coaching gigs. Originally a keeper, Holly set aside the gloves to focus on bowling when playing with the Northern Districts Spirit. It would prove an important step in her career. Since her debut for New Zealand in early 2014, the fastmedium has become a spearhead of the Ferns’ bowling attack in T20 and One Day formats. Although she considers test cricket to be the pinnacle of the old leather on willow code, this wily wicket-taker is unlikely to doff a test cap. “Unfortunately, we don’t [play tests] anymore,” she explains. “I think it just comes down to time and scheduling. I would love to play one; as a bowler there’s more strategy, more overs and plenty more opportunities to give it your best. “I feel the women’s game needs a return to test cricket. To be fair, though, I really think T20 is the way to go when it comes to promoting women’s cricket. Hopefully, the fan base that could build up as a result may allow the funding for tests to return.” Maintaining match fitness can also prove problematic for New Zealand’s finest female cricketers who play far fewer fixtures at the top level than the Black Caps. “We don’t play as often as the men but the amount [of international cricket] we’re playing is on the increase,” she confirms. “We’re also getting to play overseas against different opposition more often too, which is important.”
SETTLING SCORES... During this summer’s women’s One Day and T20 competitions, the Auckland Hearts will be hoping a return to title fame is on the cards. All-rounder, Holly Huddleston, will likely prove a particularly thorny customer for batters to manage. “Batting is still a massive ‘work on’ for me; bowling is my biggest strength. I’ve been working on changing up the ball at the death in T20s and that’s when my ability to swing the ball really comes into its own,” she reveals. “I’ve probably taken a few more wickets than I’ve hit sixes. Hitting a six is just unbelievable but you can’t beat the feeling from taking a wicket; it’s such a rush, especially when you bowl an absolute jaffa and the batter has no hope of even getting close to it, that feels fantastic!” Fresh laurels during the domestic season could go some way to soothing the agony which resulted in more than just one ‘broken Heart’ during the Women’s Cricket World Cup earlier this year. “We were all very disappointed. [White Ferns’ captain] Suzie Bates hit the nail by saying we just didn’t perform as we should have against the best teams; it just didn’t happen,” the fast-medium says. The team’s bid for a second World Cup ran as short as their run chase, managing a mere 79 in response to India’s 265. “India turned up to the park and we didn’t. We bowled really well to keep them to an average score but we just didn’t back it up with the bat. “I didn’t play that game. It’s not the best to be dropped, first and foremost, but then for the game to go the way it did was just awful! I felt helpless because with no control over the situation; the best I could do was run on drinks.” I suggest a few drinks afterwards may have helped too; she laughs but she’s right to remain positive because, in sport, there’s always another cup around the corner. Come next November, Holly hopes she and her team can deliver some sweet revenge during the T20 World Cup in the West Indies. Recently, the Ferns made some impressive progress on the road to retribution, picking up two wins from three ODIs followed by a clean sweep of the four-match T20 series against Pakistan during a short tour of the UAE. Their next campaign will be a home series against the ‘Windies’ early next year. “Playing at home is massive for us. It’s a little bit chillier here than in the West Indies, so they might not like it too much,” Holly laughs. “But they are a force to be reckoned with. We’d be confident, but it all comes down to what happens on the day.” eastlife | december 2017 |

We know Jacs Phew! A month is a short time in politics when it comes to a new government that’s keen to ‘do this’! So, while we just can’t keep up with the energetic Ms Ardern concerning all her wheelings and dealings, we can zero in on just a few reports from the PM’s office, as seen through the eyes of the EastLife team.
Apparently, we don’t know Jacs well enough! Unfortunately, it wasn’t until last month’s issue went to print that we noticed a small, yet significant, error in this column... we spelt ‘Ardern’ wrong! Our apologies to the PM for this egregious error (aka a typo) on behalf of the writer in question and our editor. And apologies to ‘Dave’ who picked up on our mistake; if you’d like a job proofing our magazine, we would love to have you on board. While we couldn’t pay you for your time, we’re sure the sense of satisfaction you’d receive from this task would be ample reimbursement for your trouble. Jac’s chats to ‘The Donald’.
Merry Politics! While Santa may be making a list so too is our new PM. “When my government was sworn in just over four weeks ago we promised action and we’ve made huge strides on many issues already,” Ms Ardern announced recently. “By Christmas we’ll make further important progress, putting families at the heart of everything this government does.” From extending paid parental leave to 26 weeks and raising student allowances, to increasing contributions to the New Zealand Superannuation Fund, the Government’s 100 Day Plan appears to offer plenty for Kiwis of all ages to unwrap. “There’s much more for this government to do, but I’m proud of the progress we’ve made and the difference we’re making to the lives of many New Zealanders,” the PM added. Of course, as with Christmas, it’s not really a fat man from the North Pole who pays for all such gifts, unfortunately, that’s where the Tax Working Group comes in...
‘
mean PM!) Mr Trudeau and Donald ‘happiness is a warm gun’ Trump.
We want children to have the best start in life. Evidence shows having a parent at home as long as possible to care for a child provides a huge benefit...”
Up North for a while? On the campaign trail, media ‘spinner’, Mark Richardson – by that we’re referring to the fact the former Black Cap was a part-time spin bowling option, of course – was chastised for asking Jacinda Ardern if she was expecting to be expecting. However, it turns out the PM has been expecting... to implement some big changes for the littlest Kiwis and their parents. “Cabinet decided to increase the duration of parental leave entitlements to 22 weeks from 1 July 2018, extending further to 26 weeks from 1 July 2020... This is a key part of our Families Package and one all three parties of government have been proud to support because it’s the right thing to do.” The right thing to do? Careful, Ms Ardern, better stop saying things like that or the people might confuse you for a person rather than just a politician! “Some 28,000 parents currently enjoy 18 weeks of paid parental leave, but that’s one of the lowest in the OECD,” she continued. “We want children to have the best start in life. Evidence shows having a parent at home as long as possible to care for a child provides a huge benefit for that child’s development... This is an investment in families that will benefit children and all of society.”
This much is Trudeau Millennials may simply adore Justin (baby, baby, baby, oh!) Bieber, but those from Gen X or Y are more likely to have eyes for Justin Trudeau. Shortly after our new PM’s election win, Ms Ardern spoke with Canadian heartthrob (we

We’re picking she may well have enjoyed one of these encounters just a little more than the other.
The lady’s not for Turn(bull)ing Ahead of her recent sojourn to Sydney, Ms Ardern accentuated the positive about her meeting with her Australian PM, Malcolm Turnbull – aka the only Aussie politician who’s not also a Kiwi, it seems! “The Trans-Tasman relationship is New Zealand’s most important. Our economies are among the most integrated in the world with strong trade.... We are stronger together on the international stage,” she said. During the previous government’s tenure at the top – as Bill English rightly pointed out – Kiwis have been flocking home from Oz to ‘God’s own’. Whether that’s more to do with our ‘rock star’ economy or recent measures, which have seen New Zealanders enjoy a less favoured status across the ditch, is open to conjecture.
Homes – if you want two? When foreign speculators come knocking, NZ won’t be home to some offers, that is if the Government gets its Act together. Recently, Ms Ardern confirmed that overseas buyers intent on stocking up on this country’s housing stock may soon be turned away. “We are determined to make it easier for Kiwis to buy their first home so we are stopping foreign speculators buying houses and driving up prices. Kiwis should not be outbid like this,” she said. “The previous National government chose to put foreign speculators ahead of Kiwi families, but we have chosen to protect Kiwi families and New Zealand’s best interests.” A planned amendment to the Overseas Investment Act will seek to classify residential housing as ‘sensitive’, with the consequence that non-residents or non (NZ or Australian) citizens will need to build should they wish to buy. www.eastlife.co.nz

Legit Design – catch of the day! Carbon graphite is commonly used in fishing rod manufacturing, but you won’t find aramid fibre in many fishing rods today. Due to its light weight and resilience, aramid fibre is widely used in many aerospace and military applications such as bullet proof vests. Now, the same composite is being skilfully crafted into Legit Design fishing rods. “We are able to achieve this by using carbon graphite with exceptionally strong aramid reinforcement in our rods,” says founder, Hirofumi Iitaka. “In fact, Legit Design is one of the few fishing rod manufacturers in the world which is using aramid fibres successfully on a global scale. Our product R&D focus has always been on weight reduction and blank strength! We are confident that at the end of the day, our rod users will not only feel the quality of our rods, but also
It is a fishing technique which uses various styles of lures designed to create movements which are irresistible to the target fish species. appreciate and understand the spirit of our rod design.” Legit Design fishing rods can be found in Japan, Taiwan, China, Singapore, France, Brazil, Thailand, UAE, Australia, and, now in Aotearoa-New Zealand. These rods introduce a new and exciting thrill to jig fishing and also bring users an unparalleled fishing experience. Globally, many anglers have become addicted to this longstanding style of fishing, and jigging has gained its popularity in New Zealand in the recent years.
However, the reasonable physical strength and fitness level required in jigging may deter many anglers to give this style of fishing a go. And, this is one of the most crucial reasons why using a quality, light-weight yet strong jigging rod will make all the difference and provide a much more enjoyable experience.
all fishing requirements such as light snapper fishing in Hauraki Gulf to more demanding, heavy weight kingfish. “Jigging has been around for a long time but modern day technology has taken it to new heights. It’s an exhilarating way to fish and is both satisfying to experienced anglers as well as to those trying it for the first time. Christmas cheer
– who is accountable?
Wynyard Wood consultant, RICHARD OSBORNE, whose specialties include commercial law and intellectual property law, writes on issues concerning the business community The Health and Safety Act at Work Act 2015 (HASAW) is now in force. Its name is self-explanatory but what does the Act do? Its purpose is to eliminate or minimise risk to workers in their workplaces. It does so by focusing on a person conducting a business or undertaking, other than simply being a worker (termed a PCBU). An undertaking is an activity that doesn’t have to be carried out for profit or gain. Voluntary associations conducting activities for community purposes are excluded as PCBU’s. Next, a PCBU has the primary duty to eliminate or manage workplace risk to an extent that is reasonably practicable. This important term involves a balancing of risk assessment and its elimination or realistic management. In terms of a particular workplace there could be more than one PCBU, so they need to co-ordinate their responses to these duties. The specific duty of a PCBU who manages or controls a workplace is to “ensure, so far as is reasonably
practicable, that the workplace, the means of entering and exiting the workplace, and anything arising from the workplace are without risks to the health and safety of any person.” An officer of a PCBU includes a director of a company or a partner in a partnership. Their duty is to use due diligence to ensure the PCBU follows its primary duty. Due diligence means keeping up to date on risk, instigating risk management procedures and monitoring them. Lastly, a worker at a PCBU also has the duty to: • T ake reasonable care for their own health and safety •M ake sure that their acts or omissions do not adversely affect the health and safety of other persons •C omply, as far as is reasonably able, with any reasonable instruction that is given by the PCBU to allow the PCBU to comply with the Act
• Co-operate with any reasonable policy or procedure of the PCBU relating to health or safety at the workplace that has been notified to them. A failure to carry out any duties carries the risk of significant fines and penalties for officers, workers and PCBU’s. Now, with the Christmas season approaching and the prospect of workplace celebrations, this can be a time of lowered inhibitions (alcohol being a major contributor). Negative consequences, such as personal harassment, are reflected in issues arising under the employment, privacy, human rights and criminal law. Those celebrations will also raise wider alcohol consumption duties for PCBU officers and workers. First, alcohol consumed at work is a workplace risk even if, for example, an alcohol affected car crash or other accident occurs on the way home. The alcohol risk at Christmas parties will have to be managed primarily by the officers of PCBU’s.
They will have to assess any alcohol limits (reduced in 2014) and to whom they apply (the 20 years of age and lower dividing line being significant). Officers of PCBU’s will have to relate those risks to the HASAW requirements and educate workers as to how those risks apply to them. They will have to put host responsibility policies in place and identify and deal with vulnerable individuals. They will have to provide food and non-alcoholic alternatives for workers with options, other than driving home, as backstops. Workers, of course, have the responsibility (backed up by employment agreements) to follow those directions. However, the primary responsibility stays with the PCBU and their officers. The question then remains – as an officer of a PCBU are you prepared sufficiently for the coming season of Christmas cheer?
