Fundraising stars Hi everyone, Well, temperatures have dipped but here’s hoping this month’s EastLife will warm you through because it’s packed with great articles about fascinating people, places and products as well as gorgeous goodies to win. In fact, check out the amazing overnight cruise giveaway for eight people put up by Discovery Cruising. It’s valued at $1700 and is a wonderful prize for friends or family to share.
With an eye for design, Sammy Tiongson has created an exceptional living environment at his Dannemora home. The interior décor is defined by his appreciation of shape, form and colour, reflecting a sense of style that has stamped a modest building with a sense of grandeur. See story page 40.
Last month’s comments about irritating habits prompted a few emails and, on the home front, it seems traffic, traffic and more traffic is frustrating readers. I sympathise with those who are becoming irked by road works along Ti Rakau Drive – especially when new road closures suddenly cut off side streets
putting motorists, especially those unfamiliar with the area, in a spin. Other major gripes have been lane jumping and what seems to be an increase in red-light running – both so dangerous and sure to spark road rage gestures.
dedicated residents ‘in the pink’ and working towards a cure for a form of cancer that has affected so many lives in different ways – you are all stars! And, on that note, I’m on my way, catch you all next month.
But, have patience everyone and, please, don’t be tempted to run an orange, or worse, a red light. With all the ongoing changes, the result could be a really nasty accident. Then there’ll be regrets and recriminations especially when the only gain might have been a few metres. But enough of griping; surely we can all feel thrilled at the way locals embraced Pink Ribbon Month and during June raised many thousands of dollars for the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation through pink ribbon breakfasts. How wonderful to see

10 TEN
Ten questions in ten minutes with
Jeneen Hunter
Jeneen Hunter is perhaps best known to many people as the mother of supermodel and celebrity Rachel Hunter, but surprisingly, every Saturday this talented and creative woman can be seen in Howick showcasing her stunning Fairyfotos at the Classy Crafts market in Cook Street. What prompted your interest in fairy art? My granddaughter when she was six years old; just at that fairy age and wanting to ‘be’ a fairy. So I took photos and being a photographic retoucher and colourist by trade, I put her together as a fairy. She loved it and so did others and so, it started. I still have that first precious fairyfoto – Renee-inspired, but I think I’ve improved a bit since then. How do you create your personalised fairy images? Taking photos of flowers, landscapes and ‘things’ then making up my own backgrounds and templates. At present I have about 30 backgrounds to choose from and I just keep creating. Colour and design make it easy to personalise a wee fairy. Have you always considered yourself to be a creative person and are there other crafts in which you are interested? Yes, I’ve always been creative. Colour and design inspires and interests me. The computer and Photoshop have opened up a whole new world so now I am into digital art. I love making posters and business cards, anything that fires the imagination. Then, if I run out of creative things to do in this way, I change the furniture around or paint a wall in a new colour! Fronting a craft market stall are you often or seldom recognised as the mother of Rachel Hunter? Well, not really sure; about 50/50 I guess. I am so proud of both my daughters and my grandchildren so it’s always nice to receive compliments. How often do you see Rachel and/ or your grandchildren – does she/
6 | eastlife | july 2013
they come to you or are you able to go to there? On average I see them twice a year; Rach more now she is doing New Zealand’s Got Talent. Isn’t she good? Well, I think so! And L.A. for Christmas; I enjoy that. It’s the usual NZ Christmas as far as the food goes but very snuggy with a fire because the weather is colder. Does Rachel’s celebrity status intrude on your everyday life? No, I don’t let it intrude on my life. We are a close family but it’s important that we each live our own lives, which in turn, reflects our individuality. Tell us one thing about Rachel as a child that is perhaps little known to the public. Mmmm – I don’t think at the adult
age Rach is that I have the right to reveal any childhood antics. Rach was the perfect child!!?? We just had to ask – did you ever have a crush of Rod Stewart when you were young? Definitely, NO to his music. However, I liked the set of 1930’s oldies that he put out. My dad was a musician and had his own band so I grew up around music. I played the piano and tried the violin – that didn’t work but I have always been a jazz and classical music fan. I also love the floaty New Age music which drives my family mad but it calms me. What is the first thing you would do if you became Prime Minister? Well, that will never happen! From fairy lady to Prime Minister – ha! All that manipulation, deception and
twisted intentions that seem to be part of governments world-wide – not a job for a simple fairy lady. I would need a very magic wand to make a difference. If you could invite three people to dinner – dead or alive – who would you ask? Albert Einstein – what a mind that man had. I would love to listen to his magical words of hope and wisdom. Artist, Richard Doyle – from where did he get his inspiration; such beautiful, interesting paintings. Actress, Audrey Hepburn – an elegant woman with heart and beauty. And then, just so we could all communicate, medium Kevin Cruikshank – I’d make the meal stretch somehow! www.eastlife.co.nz

“It’ll be beautiful platters of small bites and finger food for cocktail parties, bridal showers, hen’s parties, christenings and all sorts,” says Meg. “We’ll be caterers for the night and serve too!”
Locally, Simon is a fan of high-profile Kiwi chef, Al Brown and also happens to be old family friend of Auckland restaurant king, Simon Gault, who once operated the former Bell House Restaurant in Pakuranga.
But with so much in the works, will the clatter of silver drown out wedding bells for the couple?
Although Meg is the staunch local, Simon appears to be a strong convert. “I absolutely love Howick and Half Moon Bay,” he says. “The longer we stay here the better it gets. It’s an amazing place to bring up kids!”
“We’re still engaged,” says Meg. “Contrary to popular belief!” quips Simon; Meg laughs, saying a magazine had published rumours of their engagement being called off. “We’re getting married this year,” Simon affirms. “It’s just a matter of scheduling. Locally, too, we hope!” After a fairytale proposal at The Beach House two years ago, it seems the Bucklands Beach restaurant, Meg’s favourite, could be a strong contender venue-wise. “It has special meaning for us,” says Simon. Ironically, fellow local Kelly Kaihea from The Beach House made the penultimate round of Masterchef New Zealand 2013. “She did really well,” says Simon. “It was nice seeing another local going for it.” That said, the couple’s own time in the limelight hasn’t come to an end yet. “We are recognised wherever we go especially when we’re together.” But like regular people, they, too, have their own celebrities to look up to. “I think Gordon Ramsay is just outstanding,” says Meg. “The difference between him and other chefs is that he continues to cook just like he wants to. He’s in complete control of everything. He has his finger on the pulse the whole time.”
Likewise, their Aussie counterparts were smitten with this part of the world when they visited for the instant restaurant. “They thought it was beautiful. They were quite stunned. They absolutely loved New Zealand. It was a real treat for them.” Simon and Meg have continued to maintain ties with some of the MKR gang. David Hopgood (one half of the soldier boys) visited for 10 days and stayed with them, and they have stayed in Sydney with Helen Demetriou (one half of the Greek siblings) and her husband. Upon reflection, they have all arrived at the same conclusion. “You can’t do something like My Kitchen Rules and expect life to be the same,” says Meg. Looking at their cosy lounge now, cleared to fit in more than 20 people, including celebrity hosts Pete Evans and Manu Feildel, there is little trace of any competition heat. However, if visitors peer at a bookcase beneath the breakfast bar of the kitchen, there are signed cookbooks of Pete and Manu’s as well as a volume of My Kitchen Rules: The Cookbook 2 which never made it to New Zealand shores.
In the meantime, the busy foodies enjoyed watching their successors battle it out on screen. Watching this year’s show obviously brought back memories and some hindsight. “We now know not to sweat anything; just go with your gut and trust your own palate, not what everyone else is thinking.”
Simon adds: “You can actually achieve anything if you set your mind to it. I would never in a million years have thought we could have done what we did.” “And still be together!” says Meg with a smile. www.simonandmeg.co.nz

If burning the midnight oil is anything to go by, Annabelle Lochead must be in need of a new wick.

After two years of late nights, the mother of two completed an interior design course with flying colours at the well-recognised Nanette Cameron School of Interior Design based at Te Tuhi in Pakuranga.
And that wasn’t the end of the experience. The people at Fluid Interiors were so impressed with her efforts they offered Annabelle a job as a designer. “And I’m just loving it,” says the eclectic designer. “I really wanted to do something creative, and it was so lovely to be given the opportunity.”
But Annabelle took home more than just flying colours. The top student’s portfolio was also recognised as the best in her year by German furniture systems manufacturer, Hettich. As a result, she received a three-day design experience as her prize. This began at Hettich New Zealand in East
Possessing a Bachelor in Fine Arts as well as overseas experience as an auctioneer’s photographer, Annabelle felt interior design was the right outlet for her creativity and decided to take it further. She asked for recommendations from prestigious furniture retailer Cavit & Co in Parnell and was referred to the Nanette Cameron School of Interior Design – a name many industry professionals have identified as a source of quality grounding for budding interior designers.
classes in the next – all the others were full-time.” Despite being part-time, Annabelle says there were high standards to adhere to. “It was highly professional, not just a hobby course.”
Looking it up online, Annabelle found that the course was perfect. Because of her two children under five, she needed something that could fit around her busy lifestyle.
This was further strengthened by the fact that students were under the tutelage of Nanette Cameron herself, a well-respected figure in New Zealand’s art and design landscape and a former long-time Pakuranga resident.
“It was flexible enough that I could do day classes in the first year, and night
“The teachers were wonderful and incredibly supportive. I was especially
impressed with Nanette’s love of architecture. She gave me a global perspective of design; it wasn’t just restricted to New Zealand. I’ve been so inspired by everything and the spirit of competitiveness in the course has driven me forward.” Although the work load was significant, Annabelle says it never felt like work. “That’s what happens when you love what you do. “We see terrible things every day but doing the course was such a wonderful opportunity to study beautiful things that make our living environment better.”

Firm ticks on after 60 years Time has always been on Mathias Timmermans side. He is the sixth generation watch and clockmaker in his long family line and his New Zealand business, originally named Timmermans Watch and Clock Repairs has been established for more than 60 years. Talking to HELEN PERRY he reflects on his success. At 85 years of age and looking 10 years younger, Mathias Timmermans is still managing director of Timmermans – Manufacturers of Fine Jewellery. He attends every board meeting and the watch on his wrist, an Omega, ensures he is never late. However, it is son Stephen who now handles the day to day running of the Botany Town Centre store as well as neighbouring Rokoko, a complementary business he and wife Diana own. Matt originally trained under his uncle in his Netherlands home town of Arcen. He was the first of his siblings, which include four brothers and two sisters, to emigrate from Holland in 1952, although plans had been in the wind before the Second World War. “My father originally thought to immigrate to South Africa but then war broke out in 1939 and put an end to all thoughts of leaving. “Finally, early in 1952, I made my way to Auckland, stopping first at Melbourne before taking an eighthour sea plane flight across the Tasman to land at Mechanics Bay.” Matt wasted no time looking for a job. Walking the length of Queen Street to Karangahape Road, he came across Pascoe’s Jewellers where founder James Pascoe offered him a job. “But I told him the pay wasn’t enough,” says the skilled tradesman. Carrying on his search he arrived at Brownson’s Jewellers where he secured a job in the workshop. There, fate seated him next to a 17-year-old apprentice, Neville Burke whom many will remember from Burkes Traditional Jewellers in Howick. “Neville was the first person I spoke to properly and we have remained firm friends,” says Matt. However, within eight months of starting work, the enterprising Dutchman had left Brownson’s and opened his first shop on the corner of Ewington Ave and Dominion Road in Mt Eden. Before the building was demolished in the ‘60s and the site turned into a park, Matt had moved his store to the www.eastlife.co.nz
nearby Valley Road shops where it operated up until the early 1990s. He also had another shop in Glenfield from 1971 which closed in the late 1980s. But the big step, which was to influence the future of the business, came in 1965 when Timmermans became a foundation retailer at the newly-built Pakuranga Town Centre. The shop remained there until it relocated to the new Botany Town Centre in 2001. “I’ve always believed in being where the people are and it seemed to me that the new Botany Town Centre would attract a lot of shoppers,” Matt says. “We deliberated and, despite our many years at Pakuranga, decided to make the move. The decision was a good one despite fluctuating economic times.” As an octogenarian, albeit an active one, Matt no longer plies his trade but says, his is a disappearing art.

October, family and friends who gathered to celebrate included people such as Neville Burke and many former employees including Jeff Honeybun, who now owns Jeff Honeybun Jewellers in Howick. They all saluted Matt who says, “I have been extremely lucky in life; I did exactly what I set out to do and it all came to fruition.” But perhaps son Stephen best sums up this remarkable man: “My father has never backed down on anything he set his mind to. He’s been an innovator in business and never been afraid to embrace new ideas. “Dad was diagnosed with cancer five years ago and given eight months. He’s still here and well. “He is still the incredible role model he has always been to his children and grandchildren; to his friends and employees. We couldn’t have a finer person to look up to.” eastlife | july 2013 |

Career follows select path She received global recognition for her work more than 22 years ago, but Pakuranga College alumna Julie Collier is not one to rest on her laurels. Natalie Brittan catches up with the accomplished composer and journalist now living in the Wairarapa.
Music, politics and horses may not have a lot in common but it’s a threeway harmony for ex-local, Julie Collier, who left our eastern shores more than 30 years ago. The author and composer of award-winning radio programme Witches Academy won a gold medal at the Oscars of radio awards, the prestigious New York Festivals’ Radio and Print Awards, in 1991. Originally written as a musical, Witches Academy was adapted into an hour-long family music programme for National Radio. At the time, Julie, a National Radio broadcaster, produced, wrote and voiced the lead character. Shortly after the award, the then 32-year-old mother of toddler Rosie accompanied her husband, former chief press secretary and prolific writer, Michael Wall, to Europe where he completed his eighth novel, Cardinal Sins. “I could write a book on ‘How to Take a Two-year-old Around Europe Without Pulling Your Hair Out!’ ” laughs the former Pakuranga College deputy head girl. Back in New Zealand, she returned to work for National Radio in Wellington where she hosted music feature, Home Grown, for two years. However, music has played second fiddle to journalism in her career. Fifteen years ago, Julie founded and is still editor of a news and information service called Select Committee News (SCN) which reports the goings-on of Parliament’s Select Committee. The only one of its kind in the country, Julie says she saw the need to inform specific businesses and agencies about bills and legislations that pass through the doors of the Select Committee.
16 | eastlife | july 2013
“Nobody had ever done it before. We were the first to establish an internetbased newsletter as a primary method of communication. We broke a lot of fresh ground. Years ago you could only get a bill in paper form.” Despite the fast-paced developments of today, SCN can still lay claim to its exclusive status. “For 80% of the time, we’re the only people [at Select Committee meetings]. We cover submissions made to the Select Committee from around the country.” An idea that took shape over a glass of wine, this unique news portal has heightened Julie’s awareness of democracy in the New Zealand. “When involved in a Select Committee process, you quickly understand that democracy is alive and well in New Zealand. It’s such a fantastic country to live in and we’re so lucky to access our MPs the way we can.” She says the last 15 years have been an eye-opener. “We have seen the most amazing submissions to select committees.... the coverage is a broad sweep across society and is apparent every day in the Select Committee. It’s the most fascinating part of government.”

horse families, and a retired pony on their land. Julie herself is skilled in the equestrian art of dressage.
An email newsletter goes out to subscribers every week detailing the week’s happenings. Up to 30 pages long, these newsletters reach law firms, government agencies and specific businesses.
In addition, her latest EP, Stars for Breakfast, can be downloaded for free on her website, www.juliecollier. net.
“It’s sold by word of mouth,” says Julie. “It’s like a secret society and we’re very lucky to have a loyal client base, many who have been on board from the beginning.” Although the buzzing Beehive is her business base, at home, Julie lives a tranquil life on five hectares of rural Wairarapa land where she and her husband have bred sport horses for more than 10 years. Today, it’s a trim operation but the couple still maintain two Holsteiners, of the esteemed Littorio and Corlando
While the horses and SCN are enough to keep anyone’s hands full, Julie has managed to keep music in the picture having released three albums – Witches Academy, Susan the Sausage and The Coming of Age which are all available on iTunes and Amazon.
Meanwhile, Witches Academy remains very much a crowd favourite having been successfully translated onto stage, radio airwaves, and will soon take its new form in print with illustrations by Nikki-Slade Robinson, a leading children’s book illustrator. Julie says creativity has been a significant part of her life. “The actual process of being creative is incredibly important to one’s sanity. To sit down in the quiet somewhere and to create something that wasn’t there before is a huge experience and everyone can do it. You just have to have confidence.” www.eastlife.co.nz

growing good Maraetai may be a long way from tropical isles in the sun but the close-knit, East Auckland community has had a growing influence on the people on one particular Tongan island as Jon Rawlinson discovered.
When a devastating cyclone ripped through Tongan isle, Vava’u, some 10 years ago, John Ross lent a hand with an aid project which evolved into a new family business, Heilala Vanilla.
A stylish restaurant and bar, with great atmosphere and cosy fireplace featuring delicious Thai cuisine.
Now the company has launched the Heilala Vanilla Foundation, which aims to further John’s charitable work. Company director, Jennifer Boggiss, says her father’s philanthropy stems from the family’s rural roots.
John moved to Maraetai in 2001 and is active in the company and the charity. In developing Heilala Vanilla, which takes its name from the national flower of Tonga, he has established more than a business growing beans in Tonga to be processed in New Zealand, he has formed a partnership with the people of Vava’u. “Dad was a dairy farmer who also grew corn and squash, and vanilla growing was an expansion on this,” Jennifer says. “He even visited vanillagrowing countries to gain a better understanding of this unique crop.” Describing her father as a hardworking man of many talents and incredible energy with a calm, yet entrepreneurial spirit, Jennifer says as a retired dairy farmer, he wasn’t about to head to the bowling club! “Instead, at 72 years old, he became instrumental in re-building Tonga’s vanilla industry.” Established on the principles of fair trade, the Heilala Vanilla Foundation is a registered charity which, on completion of harvest will donate a percentage of its vanilla bean sales to worthy causes on Vava’u. High School. “Because Dad now looks after the growing and crop supply in Tonga, he spends up to six months a year there and the balance here,” says Jennifer who now lives with her family on a semi-rural Tauranga property. “We have a small greenhouse on our land in Te Puna, with some 20 vanilla plants – the greenhouse needs to be heated and humidity created. Vanilla grows typically 20 degrees either side of the equator so Vava’u is perfect.” And success runs in the family, Jennifer’s brother, Geoff Ross, built a global brand with 42 Below vodka. “Having witnessed Geoff’s journey from garage to the boardroom of Bacardi was probably my greatest inspiration. If I can do with Heilala Vanilla what he did with vodka, I will be proud but I doubt vanilla will move as fast off the shelf as vodka!” Yet, the vanilla company’s products have experienced their share of fame. “Seeing Heilala Vanilla in the MasterChef Pantry on TV made my heart sing,” Jennifer says. “I am also delighted to see our products named on the menus of some award-winning restaurants worldwide and on the shelves of prestigious retailers. It means they are making an impact.”

All a matter of history What’s in a name – or to be more precise – what’s in the names of our local streets? CHRISTINE MILES from the Howick Historical Village gives the low down on the history behind some of our thoroughfares.
Uxbridge Road, Howick may be a sedentary suburban byway today but its name is something of a long shot.
‘
In fact, the street’s roots lie in warfaring times, being named for Lord Uxbridge who lost a leg at the Battle of Waterloo (June 18, 1815). Uxbridge commanded some 13,000 allied cavalry and 44 guns of horse artillery. One of the last cannon shots fired in the battle collected his right leg. According to anecdote, he was close to the Duke of Wellington when hit. “By God, sir, I’ve lost my leg!” he exclaimed, to which Wellington replied, “By God, sir, so you have!” Surgeons performed an above-knee amputation using neither antiseptic nor anaesthetic and Lord Uxbridge, true to his nature, remained stoical and composed.
Uxbridge Road’s roots lie in war-faring times, being named for Lord Uxbridge who lost a leg at the Battle of Waterloo.”
During the amputation, according to his aide-de-camp, he smiled and said, “I have had a pretty long run. I have been a beau these 47 years, and it would not be fair to cut the young men out any longer.” According to another anecdote, his only comment through the dreadful procedure was, “the knives appear somewhat blunt.” Uxbridge wore a succession of wooden legs for the remainder of his
life. His original leg was buried in a garden in Waterloo, Belgium, and quickly became a significant tourist attraction. However, it wasn’t until 1847 that his named was bestowed on the wellknown street in central Howick. It came about following a visit to the newly formed village, and its army pensioner (Fencible) settlers, by Lt Col Godfrey Mundy and Governor George Grey.
It was recommended Howick streets be named after military or naval heroes and major battles, hence, Uxbridge Road and many others EastLife will feature in later editions. In the meantime, take a walk down Uxbridge Road, perhaps you’ll even recognise the shape! It’s Howick’s link to a bygone time. – Researched by Christine Miles from the archives at Howick Historical Village

Christie – a mother’s fight for justice
books | eastlife
Everyone’s been talking about the deeply personal and thought-provoking memoir recently released about teenager Christie Marceau, killed by Akshay Chand while on bail.
too soon. It is fitting that royalties from sales will go to The Christie Marceau Charitable Trust which helps teenagers attend programmes such as Outward Bound and Spirit of Adventure and helps New Zealand’s youth follow their dreams.
Christie is written by her mother Tracey Marceau who writes, “Christie will never tell her story herself. But as the mum of such a bright star, I will ensure she is heard. I will never give up because I know that she never would have.”
The tragic murder of Christie on the morning of November 7, 2011, is still vividly recalled by many new Zealanders. But for Tracey Marceau that day was a mother’s worst nightmare.
Raw, moving and thought-provoking, the book is a tribute to a daughter taken
A young man entered her home, pushing
Tracey to the side before kicking and stabbing her daughter. Christie died in her mother’s arms.
Her killer, Akshay Chand, was released on bail just a month earlier for kidnapping Christie, during which he threatened to rape and kill her. Christie had begged the courts to keep him in custody, fearing for her life. Christie is the book readers will find difficult to put down. There will be few who won’t identify with Tracey Marceau’s grief or questions raised.
Book weighs in on grocery market The ritual of grocery shopping is not generally something to talk about, save maybe the receipt at the end of it! However, Pakuranga journalist John Winters has found a particular characteristic unique to New Zealand supermarkets to talk about, and has even written a book about it. From the UK, John arrived on Kiwi shores in 1999 and noticed that grocery stores here were largely owner-operated and came under
the umbrella of the largest market share holder, Foodstuffs. The only other major competition was Countdown and its franchises, Fresh Choice and SuperValue, owned by Woolworths in Australia. In his book, Checkout, John explains how the owner-operator model works and why it exists in New Zealand. Published independently, the book details the impending merger of Foodstuffs Auckland and Wellington that will move
the heart of this nationwide industry to Auckland. Offering shoppers a glimpse behind stacked supermarket shelves and an in-depth view with business implications for those in the industry, this book is a little different – not the average browse by the magazine aisle, that’s for sure! Charismatic river cruise River cruising has been embraced by keen travellers the world over so, EastLife managing director REAy NEBEN decided to find out whether the APT Rhine and Danube River journey from Amsterdam to Budapest was as good as it sounded. Part of an extended European holiday, our river cruise booking had me excited from day one. I couldn’t wait to board the Euro-Star in London and make our way first to Brussels and then Amsterdam where we were to join the rest of our ‘cruisey’ companions. Having always been a travel ‘do-it-yourselfer’, it was the first truly organised trip of my life, and provided a chance to tick a few things off my bucket list. I recommend it to everyone.
Next, a cruise briefing and opportunity to meet fellow travellers, who were a real mix of ages and nationalities. Most were well travelled and liked the idea of this type of cruising. Only 12 Kiwis and two Australians among the group but many passengers had visited New Zealand at some time.
‘
After arriving in Amsterdam we were very happy to reach our overnight hotel and enjoy a leisurely evening before catching our boat the next day.
The first night was in port at Amsterdam. The next day we were taken on a tour of the city before setting off towards the Rhine and our next destination – Cologne.
From our window excitement heightened as we watched the Amalegro sail into port. The following morning, dragging our huge suitcases (big mistake) we headed for the ship which was to be home for 15 days.
I really believed I would be lying on deck chairs, reading books during the cruise. Wrong. Even when sailing during the day there was so much to see we couldn’t take our eyes off the sights.
As soon as they saw us, the crew ran down the wharf took our bags and escorted us on board where we were greeted by the captain – so far, so good. We were then shown to our cabin with its fabulous Juliette balcony, en suite, television, internet and all the mod cons of a first class hotel.
Most of the walking tours were included in our booking but there were four optional extras. We went on all four. The first – Wurzburg – provided a bus trip to medieval Rothenburg which I am glad we did. This picture book, walled town, home to the famous Kathe Wolhfahrt Christmas Store, was truly charming.
There was plenty of wardrobe space and the bed was high enough to hide our bags.
Passau involved a day trip to Salzburg and being the birthplace of Mozart this was a must do trip for me.

Words cannot describe how wonderful this cruise was. It took us on an amazing journey to magical places – what more could one ask?”
Returning to the ship, which had sailed onto Linz, we drove to the lakes of Mondsee and the church where filming for the Sound of Music took place. In Vienna there were two optional tours, the first, to Schonbrunn Palace and the other, to a Mozart and Strauss concert. All dressed up in our best it was an evening of grandeur and excellence. Every day I wrote in my diary, “tomorrow must be an easy day” but came to the conclusion that sleep could wait until after the cruise because there was just too much to see and do. The whole experience was fantastic.
The crew looked after us so well and the meals were truly gourmet. Each time we left the cabin it was tidied and new towels put out. Choosing a tour highlight was difficult. From the highest locks – there were 68 – to fabulous cities such as Budapest, Vienna, Nuremberg, I loved it all. This trip was the holiday of a lifetime offering luxury and unbelievable service. But, of course it had to end and did so in style, in beautiful Budapest. There could not have been a finer choice of finale. After a day or two in Budapest we flew to Florence, then on to Rome before heading home. Words cannot describe how wonderful this cruise was, a feeling which I know was shared by all 140 passengers on board the Amalegro. It took us on an amazing journey to magical places – now, what more could one ask?

found FOuND While the beaches of the Coromandel may prove quite the attraction during summer, when the sun doesn’t have its hat on, what does the town of Whitianga have to offer? JON RAWLINSON found a haven that proved a pleasure, despite the weather.
Hidden away on Cook Drive, surrounded by its residential neighbourhood, The Lost Spring is easily missed. However, those who find their way through its palisadelike gates will soon discover an oasis where luxury is available on tap.
After a morning of strenuous relaxation, we both felt a little peckish. Generally speaking, The Lost Spring Café menu is well priced, with mains averaging around the $20-30 mark, however, we opted to share the Mixed Grill Platter ($44).
On the invitation of the Lost Spring team, my partner and I recently stopped by for a quick dip; instead we found ourselves immersed in luxury that kept us swimming past sundown.
Featuring organic lamb koftas, organic razorback wild boar sausage, organic steak, free-range chicken, prawns and a stuffed jacket potato
At the heart of this mini resort are its two geo-thermal pools – one hot, one soothingly warm. Temperatures, I understand, can range from a mild 32°, to a scintillating 41 degrees C. Surrounded by beautifully maintained native bush, it was easy to forget that the busy ‘metropolis’ of Whitianga was just a stone’s throw away. Clever landscape design shields visitors from the world, allowing romance to flourish. Due to the chill in the air, partner and I were most reluctant to leave the warm waters to experience The Lost Spring’s other offerings. Fortunately, as meals and opulent cocktails were served poolside, we didn’t have far to travel.
Secluded pools in native surroundings complemented by gourmet food.
with dipping sauces, this platter fairly had our taste buds tingling. Although the portions weren’t enormous, all items were loaded with flavour and a delight to partake. Following another leisurely swim, my partner booked for an Island Facial treatment. At $150, the hour-long pampering session left my wallet a little worse for wear. But a happy
lady makes for a happy life, so in that respect, it was worth every cent! Partner returned, to find me relaxing in the hotter of the two pools with a good book. She extolled the virtues of therapist, Nadya van Amelsfort and her practised hands. Just when we thought we had at least glimpsed everything The Lost Spring
had to offer, the sun set and we were left bathed in excellently appointed lighting. It must be said that, due to the price tags accompanying the spa treatments, The Lost Spring is probably not an anytime retreat – at least not for poor, starving journalists. But with one-hour swim passes available for $35 ($60 for day passes), professional service, reasonably priced food and beverages, and package deals on offer, it seems a basic taste of opulence doesn’t have to cost the... earth.

The Augustine range of New Zealand-designed dressy, ‘luxe’ daywear is heading for howick and this month will become available at unique fashion boutique Twirl.
Designed especially for fashionconscious women in the 20s to 40s age group, Augustine’s new spring collection is a breath of fresh air – feminine, with a dash of soft, floating florals that encapsulate the season.
For this reason, Tina stocks only one size per style in most of her range except for jeans and some jackets. And now, she has extended her size range to encompass sizes 8-18 in many labels.
Twirl owner Tina hegley-Smith says she is delighted to add the Augustine collection to her store which specialises in New Zealand-designed garments, shoes and jewellery.
“In particular, Nellie Smith, a New Zealand-designed and made range, as well as Thrive, provide for bigger sizes, although several other collections are now offering up to size 18 too.”
“I opened Twirl to add a new shopping dimension to howick. As a working mum, I didn’t have time to travel to Newmarket, Ponsonby or Parnell to look for something unique and I was tired of seeing the same labels in local shopping malls.
“Appreciate your body for what it is and don’t hide behind your clothing. “Shop less, wear more! Choose styles that suit you, choose quality, invest in key pieces that you can mix and match and be ruthless – get rid of clothes you don’t wear. I would love to help you look and feel beautiful.”
LABEL: AUGUSTINE

By choosing brands that regularly update their collections (some up to eight times a year), Tina ensures her stock is constantly evolving. each time customers visit, there is something different in store.
Inspired by fashion she has seen around the world, particularly in europe, Tina encourages Kiwi women to feel more confident about themselves and to stop hiding behind black, loose or ill-fitting clothing.

“Bulk fashion can be incredibly unappealing – nobody wants to be the same, we all want to feel unique and to have our own style. From the beginning, I’ve been passionate about wanting to offer customers individuality and styles with personality.”
And what a range Twirl has in store – gorgeous labels such as Ketz-ke, Seduce, and Zafina – all from New Zealand designers. Then, when it comes to shoes, check out Kathryn Wilson’s Miss Wilson collection and the fabulous Minx range from Whitford designer Cushla Reed.
From pretty dresses for day and evening to bright, colourful prints, elegant tops, blazers and resort wear, these one-of-a-kind garments celebrate femininity and style for women of all ages.

T’is the season to be merino eastlife | fashion
Warm and fashionable pieces to tide us through winter are at the top of many shopping lists now that winter has well and truly arrived.
Of course, those in the know have long frequented Georgia Boutique in Pukekohe for all the latest merino fashions which form the backbone of the winter clothing industry. As a result, Carla and Maureen Van Tiel from Georgia have become the go-to experts for this marvellous material thanks to their competitively priced homegrown and manufactured merino label, The Merino Story. “The key to selecting good quality merino is to look for New Zealandmade,” says Carla. “It’s a superior product, and by buying New Zealand-made, we support our home grown industries.” Looks can be deceiving when it comes to imported merino, cautions Carla. “After one or two washes the garment may begin to pill, hole and itch.”
This is partly due to some imported fabrics being made from inferior merino. In contrast, New Zealand manufacturers adhere to high standards of production. Kiwis have created a product to be proud of, says Carla. “Merino is such an incredible fibre. Warm and soft, it drapes beautifully on the body. A breathable, renewable resource, it is part of our farming heritage.”
“For instance, superfine merino is lovely and soft for wearing next to the skin,” says Carla.
These days, it is not at all uncommon to see men’s suits, wetsuit ponchos, cocktail dresses and designer couture all made from merino. “Gone are the days of old-fashioned sportswear,” says Carla.
Touted as a luxury fabric, merino is gaining fashion high ground with more and more designs, creations and collaborations being introduced each year. Manufactured according to weight and purpose, this top of the range wool can be used for a variety of functions.
Carla adds: “There are some exciting trends being seen on the catwalk with some collections pairing merino and silk, merino and leather, and merino and lace. There is some amazing printed merino available too.” And if that doesn’t cut the cloth, this popular material is as hardy as it is sustainable.
“Odour and stain-resistant, and antiwrinkle, quality merino is a valuable investment – it should last a long time if cared for correctly,” says Carla.
“Top designers here and overseas see merino as an amazing fabric, and produce cutting edge design because of its excellent handle and drape.
“Advances in fabric technology have meant that contemporary, high quality merino is now machine washable. Follow the care instructions on each garment and ensure that machine washable merino goes through a wool or delicate cycle and in a cold wash.
“It also holds colour incredibly well, and we produce merino in great new colours to complement current fashion for the season.”
“It is important to use a wool detergent, as modern washing liquids contain active enzymes that can cause holes to form in your merino clothing.”

When buying your first suit consider when and where you are likely to wear your suit such as: • Job interviews • Balls • Weddings • Racing carnivals • Funerals • Important meetings Then you’re in a better position to consider the following:
Fabric If you’re only going to buy one suit, make it 100% wool because: • Wool is natural so breathes well • It will keep you cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s cold
Wayward Heir by Rembrandt available from Rembrandt Botany Downs.
Style
Alternatively, wool/polyester is a good choice because: • The addition of polyester adds durability • It is usually a more cost-effective option
Not to be overlooked. Go for a single breasted, two-button jacket. This will suffice for every occasion and until you’ve earned your stripes, it’s best to stick to the basics. Never button the bottom button of your jacket.
Colour colour
Pair the jacket with flat front trousers (no pleats). We prefer the hem of our trousers to sit just above the floor when wearing no shoes. With shoes on, there should be a small break in the leg near the hem.

If you think your first suit will be your ‘go-to’ for a while choose either: • Plain black • Plain navy • Plain charcoal These colours can be worn yearround making them very versatile.

#' " While selective hearing is a problem that seems to affect a lot of men, your husband’s problem may actually be the result of a change in his hearing levels. Even a small change in hearing level will make it harder to focus on a voice, understand it, and remember what was said! Speech is made up of many different sounds layered on top of each other. The higher-pitched sounds give much of the sharpness and clarity to speech. As we get older our ability to hear high-pitched sounds gets worse – even more so if we have been exposed to loud noises. Poor high-pitched hearing makes it harder to hear people when we are not face to face with them, when there is another noise going on in the background, and when we are not paying attention to the person who is speaking. High-pitched hearing loss can affect our listening concentration, and can even affect our ability to remember what we have just heard! COffEy is the National PT Manager for Jetts Olly Coffey fitness New Zealand. He is a REPS-registered Skills Fitness Active Assessor and plays an important role in ensuring our personal trainers are fully equipped to meet the diverse needs of all Jetts members. We all know that to lose weight, we need to watch what we eat and increase our activity levels. However, reducing stress levels through improved sleep routines and effective planning could be the missing link you need to achieve your weight loss goals. While a one-off stress response can be easily tolerated, repeated bouts of stress pays its toll. In this state, your body will prevent any attempts at weight loss. Proteins in your muscle are broken down, fat is stored in response to the blood sugar spikes and your energy levels will peak and crash. Trying to maintain an exercise plan while in this stressed state can also lead to illness, injury or burnout. However, regular sleep, adequate
nutrition and effective planning, will all serve to reduce stress levels. In addition, by improving your fitness, you are better able to tolerate stress and its effects. This means, by being organised and reducing as many potential stresses in our busy lives, we can increase the odds of achieving weight loss goals. Virtually any form of exercise can relieve stress. Even if you are not fit and feel out of shape, you can still make a little exercise go a long way.
By simply adding a short walk to your end of work routine, your body and mind can unwind more effectively. When your body is less stressed, you sleep better and are inclined to exercise more, thereby giving your body a better chance of losing weight!

Up to date with dinnerware There’s an incomparable pleasure to dining at home be it with the family or for a special celebration. But whatever the occasion JOCELYN WILSON from Studio of Tableware says there’s no substitute for quality, design and function when it comes to tableware.
Fine dining establishments are few and far between; the crème de la crème of restaurants compete with a myriad of eateries for custom.
Now, our pressurised workday existence has taught us to develop a more casual and universally enjoyed approach to at-home entertaining. It is less structured, even ‘spur of the moment’ at times.
Such places survive by providing memorable food, superior wines, exceptional service and attention to detail that ensures perfection.
A simple meal is prepared (sometimes on an outdoor cooker) with everyone in close proximity. Nobody misses out on the proceedings.
However, much of the hospitality market has moved to bistro format and today, it is very much a ‘give it to me now’ concept. The same applies to entertaining and dining at home.
Another scenario is ‘drinks and nibbles’ where there are enough nibbles to be regarded as a meal!
In bygone days invitations were sent out 2 or 3 weeks in advance and food preparation commenced several days prior with the day of the dinner spent on elaborate preparations.
But what does all this have to do with dinnerware? Despite today’s ‘casualness’, lifestyles can still be enriched with tableware.
Guests would be plied with a multicourse, gastronomic sensation during which time the hosts would ensure food and wine was continuous whilst they often missed out on much of the conviviality. Dishes piled up in the kitchen awaiting the departure of guests before being tackled.
There’s no substitute for quality, design and function and your tableware becomes a reflection of your lifestyle. Finely crafted, well balanced cutlery and the correct glassware will give even a casual gathering a sense of style. Continued overleaf

From previous page It is no longer essential to have a magnificent, lidded soup tureen, a tall coffee pot or every size and shape of serving dish. Modern needs no longer require such extensive tableware. However, if you do want them – and there has been a shift back to high teas and classical dinner parties – they are still available in many ranges at The Studio of Tableware. But first the basics: A ‘dinner set’ was regarded as a 36 piece matched set (6 place settings of 6 items) or a 48 piece matched set (8 place settings of 6 items). However, thinking has changed from ‘dinner sets’ to ‘sets of dinnerware’. For today’s family of four it is possible to have just one dinner set that is expandable to meet the requirements of any entertaining, provided the quality of the dinnerware will ensure that it won’t disappoint. Let’s look at the two set scenario: • Set A – covers ‘family only’ days for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In most cases 8 each of the following components will meet their daily requirements: dinner plate 27cm, lunch plate 21cm, a large bowl 21-23cm and a small cereal/noodle bowl. Eight pieces of each item should get a family through with a single daily dishwasher load. Coffee or tea drinking can be regarded as a separate event so cups, saucers and/or mugs can have the same or a different look. • Set B – covers entertaining guests. For this exercise consider six guests
denby - imperial blue and the family so, 10 people in all. Ten of each component will usually suffice as follows: dinner plate 27cm, lunch plate 21cm, a large bowl 21-23cm and a small cereal/noodle bowl. Cups, saucers and/or mugs can be added. On the other hand you could simply opt to expand Set A by the required extra components for the Set B scenario. In either case accessories can be added when required – platters, serving bowls, vegetable dishes, milk jug, sugar bowl, cups, saucers, sauceboat, various small bowls and even a teapot. Choose a shape and pattern/colour that will enhance your dining table and your décor but which will also give you pleasure. Then consider what type of ware is best for you. • Bone China gets a substantial amount of its strength from bone dust which is fired into the body. It is very strong and remarkably light weight. • Porcelain, similar to bone china, without the bone and its strength comes from a slightly heavier body.
• Fine China is a similar body and has similar attributes to porcelain. • Stoneware is extremely strong and has been fired to a very high temperature. It is considerably heavier than all of the others and tends to produce more noise in use. • Earthenware is low fired, has less strength and tends to lose the definition of the decorations and glazes more quickly than the others. Remember, it is all ceramic and will break if dropped on the floor or marble bench top. It is also susceptible to heat shock and should not be treated as oven to table ware. The Studio of Tableware has access to most of the famous brands but after more than 30 years’ experience stock has been refined and the following is recommended: Bernardaud: French Porcelain, one of the oldest manufacturers from the Limoges region. Production includes white embossed decorations through to highly decorated and gold encrustations. Bernardaud produce all of the porcelain sold
under the brand Christofle. Dansk: A Danish inspired production with a truly Scandinavian influence. Denby: English stoneware of distinctive design and decoration of very high quality. Lenox: The largest manufacturer in the USA (and one of the largest in the world) is renowned for its superior bone china and prolific decoration of products that have become universally popular. Portmeirion: Stoke-on-Trent fine china renowned for botanical and floral decorations. This company also produces Spode and Sophie Conran branded products. Rosenthal: German porcelain manufacturer of exceptional quality recognised as the most technically advanced in the industry with timeless designs that have no equal. The brand Thomas was developed by Rosenthal to offer a range of more affordable products; many have become biggest sellers as the designs have proved to be enduring.

Preserving precious works Conservation framing, once considered an expensive option, is now the preferred and recommended choice for many people framing artwork and treasured pieces says framing expert BARRY McCORMICK. Here he explains how conservation framing protects and preserves. These days, people frame anything from a pair of baby booties through to war service medals. Instead of placing those special mementos of people and places in the drawer they want them on display and preserved for future generations. True conservation materials, including mat board, backing and glass, will protect artwork from sunlight and other damaging environmental effects such as moisture. Sound conservation framing helps prevent mildew, fading or other forms of discolouration. Older mat boards surrounding existing artwork, or matting not made to conservation standards, can fade and even change colour entirely over time and unprotected works may become irreparably damaged. Always use conservation materials
for original works and limited editions and if parents have children’s art they want preserved ensure it is framed with acid-free backing and board. Ironically, while light is the source of all visual pleasure in art, it is also the environmental factor which most threatens the preservation of many works of art. In combination with air and humidity, plus acids from poor quality framing materials, light has been shown to initiate fading, discoloration and deterioration in a wide range of materials commonly used in art. The damage-causing light is ultra violet, or UV light. This light, which causes sunburn and wrinkles, will ruin framed memories, turning them yellow and brittle and making colours less vibrant. This damage
is irreversible, as no conservation treatment can restore colour once light has damaged materials. Of course, artworks or photographs should never be placed in direct sunlight, but removing them from light’s way isn’t always enough. UV light is present in every light source found in the home or office including skylights, unshaded windows and fluorescent and halogen bulbs. Conservation glass protects artworks using an invisible, patented coating which blocks 97 per cent of damaging UV light without affecting the look of the framed image.
Most museums have set the standards when it comes to prolonging the life of their exhibits often requiring that the most lightsensitive objects be displayed at reasonably dim light for no more than 10-12 weeks of the year. While at home, illuminate art at the lowest possible level practical for viewing. The human eye is perfectly able to see colours at very low light levels if ambient lighting is used. Feel free to pop in and see me with any framing questions. www.bmgalleries.co.nz

A touch of glass designer style Sammy Tiongson and Jason Sarten’s modest, one-level home in Dannemora looks like many others in the street. But as Helen Perry found out there’s no telling a house by its brickwork. Dusting must be a nightmare for Sammy Tiongson and partner Jason Sarten. Their exquisitely furnished home houses a multitude of cleverly grouped, ivory vases not only on one dresser but throughout every room. All are beautifully accentuated by a prolific array of artworks, the dominant colour – red! This dramatic fusion of red and white is skilfully integrated not with grey or black but various earthy shades of taupe and tan, the whole effect, one of individuality and design excellence.
Yet, there isn’t a flicker of dust in sight. And it’s Sammy who is credited with having a designer’s eye for colour, balance and sheer creativity. “I just love texture and mixing together different surfaces – fur and feathers with silky, smooth ceramics, shimmering glass, soft suede and more.” Though the majority of items come from local stores and garden centres, Sammy, who travels for work (he is a buyer and designer for Pumpkin Patch) and for pleasure, can point enthusiastically to pieces from Paris, Bangkok, Italy and his homeland, the Philippines. “When I see something I love I just think about where it will fit and once that’s decided I buy it. However, I’m just as likely to put a large, outdoor fixture meant for the patio on top of my bench!”
Add to this a meld of textures, stunning light fixtures, mirrors of varying shapes, statuary, plus cushions and throws galore and it’s evident that housework here is no five minute whip around.
And that’s exactly what he’s done with a huge, red-glazed ceramic pot filled with greenery and blood red anthuriums. It makes an immediate statement and, yes, there’s still plenty of room to cook and serve!

From the white tiled foyer with lighting spiral of rectangular crystal pendulums and a sofa table topped with sensual, white vases and glorious red birds to the adjacent lounge featuring more vases, graceful figurines, opulent cushion-covered couches and a magnificent two metre, metal sculpture screening a ‘dead’ corner, it is breathtaking. On the dining table eight or nine glass urns and pedestal cake stands make a stunning centrepiece while in the family area one just has to love the tall, red pedestal clock.

Then there’s the mirrors of various shapes and sizes, another reflection of creative whimsy. From room to room, contemporary furnishings, with some adept classical touches – few people could so successfully combine antique cherubs and pottery tiles with 21st century sophistication – Sammy’s ingenuity is evident. And who else would think to take a curved cane screen and have it converted to an impressive canopy over the bed? “I love to experiment and I think I’ve proved you don’t have to be enormously rich to achieve a stylish home,” Sammy says. “Jason and I are just ordinary working people who love beautiful things.” That may be so, but you can’t call this design genius ordinary. He worked in the Middle East for seven years, spent six months in New York – “a lonely place if you have no work or few friends” – and then found his niche in New Zealand with Jason. “I just love it here,” Sammy says. “I left Manila with very little, now I have a job, a lovely home and a partner. I am a happy man.”

Interior indulgence A picture may be worth a thousand words but neither pictures nor words come close to describing the opulent range of furniture at Bradfords Interiors.
Set to celebrate its diamond jubilee in October, this long-standing furniture retailer on the corner of Great South and Rockfield Roads brims with beautiful items of elegance and inspiration – the kind that can drive interior designers, stylists and home decor enthusiasts mad with desire.
Of course, with the focus also on Italian-made or designed, Bradfords carries globally renowned brands such as Ciacci, Bonaldo, A.L.F., and Valdera. The Saporini lounge suite range, in particular, is very popular, says Mark. “It’s pure Italian leather, handmade and designed in Italy and there’s nothing quite like it. We have factories in Italy exclusively producing these products for us.
Focused largely on Italian-made or designed furniture and accessories, Bradfords today is owned and operated by Mark Pheloung and his sister Janis Grindle, children of one of the original owners.
in quality, design and price.
Priding themselves on exclusivity wherever possible, Mark and Janis agree they could fill the showroom tomorrow and not duplicate a single item – no mean feat considering the 2000sqm of space.
From leather lounge suites and lavish banquet tables to stunning decorative features such as vases, mirrors and wall art, these exquisite products showcase the wonderful marriage between art and design.
“Even now, we’re still introducing new models – items that have never been seen in the country before,” says Mark.
Eye-catching contemporary designs are expressed by stainless steel fixtures – “stainless steel is visually softer than chrome” adds Mark – mirrored tables and glass ornaments which exist alongside classics – for example, a rustic farmhouse-style table made from 200-year-old timber.
What’s more, the creative strengths of this Half Moon Bay resident are also evident in many items which he has personally designed for the showroom which is unrivalled locally www.eastlife.co.nz
“The more eclectic the range, the
easier it is to mix and match. We’re big fans of combining new and old – it’s right on trend at the moment.” However, quicker to stand out are the price tags which are neither unmentionable nor exorbitant. Importantly, now, after 60 years, Bradfords continues to uphold the values of quality, excellence and innovation on which it was founded. When it first started out in Newmarket’s Broadway, the family-owned business’s specialty was custom designing and making furniture – something it still does to this very day and which has inspired Mark’s creative bent.
“As a result of our rich history, we have a strong relationship with Italy, one that has existed for more than 35 years helping us to remain at the forefront of furniture in this country.” Contact Bradfords for a FREE in-home consultation or call into the stunning showroom for a taste of splendour.

Sculptor’s skill blooms This year, as Spanish porcelain maker, Lladró, celebrates its diamond jubilee, The Gift Room in Remuera, the largest stockist of Lladró in New Zealand, marks 21 years. So, when Lladró flower sculptor Adela Oller visited Auckland as part of the company’s 60th anniversary Australasian tour, The Gift Room hosted an event for customers to see Adela at work. Helen Perry went along too.
After creating hundreds of thousands of Lladró flowers during her career with the famous porcelain company, sculptor Adela Oller has left an indelible imprint or, more accurately, fingerprint, on her artworks. That’s because every day she carefully uses her thumb and forefinger to press into shape, petal by petal, the many different flowers that appear on countless Lladró pieces. These range from a single or pair of flowers through to a barrow load, each one individually crafted by hand so that it could never be said any two are exactly the same. Amazingly, Adela has been part of the Lladró team since she was 14 years old yet she never tires of making flowers, especially roses, her favourite bloom because, “when finished they look like nature.” Through an interpreter – Adela speaks only Spanish – she said on finishing school she followed her older sister into Lladró’s employ in her home town of Tabernes Blanques. “A three-year apprenticeship included moulding, painting, casting and many other aspects of porcelain sculpture.” But it wasn’t long before her tutors noticed Adela’s ability to form delicately crafted flowers and this became her specialty area. “We all have different roles; some
do the moulding, some assembling, some paint faces, others apply glaze; mine is making the smallest flowers.” One of many flower sculptors, Adela said works such as Flowers of the Seasons, which features some 300 flowers and was first made in the 1970s, remains truly individual because, as new pieces are created, different artists work on the blossoms. “I don’t make all the flowers for every piece we produce. In that way each sculpture is always different because sculptors have their own sensitivity to a piece, their own style and way of creating each petal.” While the rose remains her most admired flower, Adela said the introduction of sunflowers to the floral range this year had been exciting. Two new pieces to mark the 60th anniversary – Heaven’s Harvest and Skirt Full of Flowers – both include sunflowers chosen because Spain is often considered the country of sunshine. Though happy to remain on ‘flower watch’ Adela said she would love time to develop her passion for painting landscapes. But in the meantime flowers it is – up to 15 a day. It can take a week to create enough flowers for one of the
large, complex pieces and watching Adela at work, it’s easy to see why she has been chosen for this exacting task. Her nimble fingers work quickly yet accurately shaping each tiny petal which she then wraps around the previous one. Using a small tool, resembling a fine crochet hook without the hook, she teases the petals open until each tiny bloom is finished.
Adela Oller displays new Lladró release, Tray with Peonies.
It is a job that requires infinite patience, a great deal of skill and, definitely, a love of nature. Adela’s flowers are, indeed, her legacy.

Designer originality big hit They say shopping local is great, but as it turns out for one Three Kings couple, it was Jag Kitchens in the east that yielded far and away the best results for their new kitchen. The stainless steel bench was the final straw for Tom and Theresa Van der Wee. After deciding to renovate their home of four years, they were on the lookout for a new kitchen and someone to do the job. “We thought we’d try the ones here because it was close and local,” says Theresa. However, Tom, an experienced boat builder and builder, had specific requirements. “They couldn’t think outside the box. They thought we knew nothing and didn’t like that Tom wanted things his way – they couldn’t work with that and Tom wouldn’t have a bar of it.” Instead of subsiding, frustrations continued to mount. “The bench was going to cost us our entire kitchen budget! We were exasperated.” Then, just at the right time, their renovations team recommended Jag Kitchens. “They said they’d done some work with Jag Kitchens and their work was top notch,” says Theresa. Visiting Jag Kitchens in the Danske Mobler Home Centre in Botany, the couple instantly gelled with kitchen designer Angela Purdy. “Ange is just awesome. We had been told ‘no’ so much and all of a sudden it was ‘yes’ all the way – we were stoked. We even got the bench we wanted and stayed on budget!” Angela says this was largely thanks to Jag Kitchens’ astute selection of suppliers. “We use RH King & Sons and they’re very reasonably priced – our clients are quite often surprised!” Just as well the Van der Wees persevered with the stainless steel – the result is stunning. Steering away from conventional kitchens boasting flashy, polished elegance, the Van der Wees went instead for individuality and clean, aesthetic design. “We wanted something fresh, something that feels like a bach in your house. I didn’t want a very packaged kitchen,” says Theresa. Hovering from the high ceilings are one-of-a-kind pendant lights www.eastlife.co.nz
with exposed cables, designed and made by Tom. Beneath, the chunky, waterfall style bench and breakfast bar takes pride of place and is married with a light, honey-coloured cabinetry embellished with a subtle wood grain. A plywood pillar, also made by Tom, extends from the ceiling to one end of the bench, creating height and dimension. Polished stainless steel retro handles and gleaming white butcher tiles further add to the kitchen’s character. Unexpected orange colours burst from the lights, stools and accessories, adding a twist and paying homage to Tom’s Dutch heritage. A big hit with family and friends, the kitchen is the centre of attention. “They all love it. They’re really envious of my kitchen! The bench gets rave reviews and everyone loves the details, the colours, the lights, and the sense of space.” While aesthetics are a priority, Angela made sure the kitchen worked as well as it looked and her suggestion of an on-bench pantry was a winner with Theresa. “That’s exactly what we wanted because I want to use my things regularly – like my mixer. If you put it down there, you’ll never get it out.” The social factor is great too, adds

the mother of two young children. “I love the openness of the kitchen and the breakfast bar. My kids actually do sit here and chat with me – it’s wonderful.” Overall, the experience with Angela has been amazing, says Theresa. “It felt good to be able to trust someone who knew what worked, and because it’s the first time we’ve renovated our own home, it helped to have that support. We’re very happy and it’s been well worth it. The kitchen is my favourite part of the whole house!” Specialising in custom-sized kitchens designed to exactly fit the room without resorting to filler panels, Jag Kitchens has its own manufacturing plant and also uses a sophisticated 3D computer design programme to show clients beforehand exactly how their new kitchen will look. And remember, Jag Kitchens designs and builds to all budgets with advice and design service being FREE OF CHARGE. Power co’s ‘perks’ SPARK DEBATE Words often carry more than one meaning. Even a little word, such as ‘perk’, can mean different things to different people. Similarly, ‘free’ and ‘fee’ are very similar in look, yet worlds apart in terms of meaning. JON RAWLINSON finds out. While the dictionary defines ‘perks’ as: ‘money, goods, or other benefit to which one is entitled’, it seems power company, Mercury Energy, has a whole new meaning in mind. Moving to a new home we received our ‘Perks’ programme booklet, with discount vouchers and a ‘welcome to the neighbourhood’ letter. However, the welcome was short-lived; a few months on I’ve discovered there’s no such thing as a free ‘perk.’ Noticing our Mercury account had been debited – with no explanation, online at least – to the tune of $2.50, I requested an explanation, expecting this to be a simple oversight. Seven days later (after I had paid our bill) I received a rather vague reply: “With reference to the Perks rewards programme, the dates for the first debit is to take place on the due date
and explained we didn’t wish to sign up, but was told, following the trial, the company would contact us to confirm whether or not we wished to continue; they didn’t! However, to Mercury’s credit, this issue was swiftly resolved. The representative went on to say:
of your bill… this will take place each month where the Perks fee is applied to your account and debited on the due date of each invoice.” My response was to access Mercury’s Perks’ website to unsubscribe. Considering discount vouchers are so common these days – particularly through sites such as GrabOne, Yazoom and Dailydo – I simply don’t wish to pay for ‘perks’ that can be obtained elsewhere without charge.
“I have removed the Perks from your account and also credited your account with the $2.50 Perks fee you were charged for this month.”
However, the website shows no obvious way to unsubscribe from the programme and, when trying to log in, using my Mercury username and password, I found access was denied.
property... this particular offer was for a three-month free trial and after that ended, the membership fee of $2.50 would have been charged on a monthly basis. All of this information should have been made clear by our staff.”
I contacted Mercury again, asking to be released from ‘Perks’, and received the following response: “You were signed up for Perks when the account was opened for your
The missus was told about ‘Perks’
A good result, but still, I am at a loss to understand how Mercury could have the audacity to call a programme ‘Perks’ and then charge a membership fee. I benefit from perks at work, including coffee, newspapers, and the use of the ‘net to write angry letters to certain organisations, but have never had a ‘perks’ fee deducted from my pay packet. In light of recent events, maybe I best check with the boss!

Mix it up
Water, water everywhere it’s needed
Why use 10 different appliances when only one is needed? Combining superior German design and innovation, the magical Thermomix does everything – except, maybe, serve! It chops, beats, mills, mixes, whips, grinds, kneads, minces, grates, juices, blends, heats, stirs, steams and weighs anything under the sun to make breads, sorbets, soups, curries, risotto and more.
Ever get that sinking feeling when opening up the latest water bill? Last month I outlined difficulties regarding accurate billing from Watercare, provider of water and waste water services to Auckland homes. The question remains, what can be done to cut down those water bills?
Prep time is minimised to seconds and minutes, and slaving away in the kitchen will soon be a thing of the past. This wonder machine even self cleans, so there’s absolutely no excuse to say “no time to cook”. Officially launched in New Zealand just last year, this handy kitchen helper will be a godsend to busy households. Free in-home demonstrations can be booked by contacting Thermomix on 0800 766 966. RRP $2410.
Fortunately, as the weather lately has shown, water need not come complete with a price tag. A simple rain barrel connected to a downpipe from the home or garage roof can stop money going down the spout.
One company that specialises in rainwater collection systems, Rainline, has a wide range of products, and I’ve personally found its 210 litre rainwater butt (available for $128.95) to be most useful. The smallest in Rainline’s range, it comes complete with a stand.
Because Watercare not only charges for usage – it also levies a wastewater fee on 78% of water drawn from the tap, in addition to a fixed wastewater fee – any drop we collect contributes to savings. – Jon Rawlinson
After purchasing one of these handy products (pictured) and installing it at the back of our garage, our water bill has significantly reduced. We use the water not just for the garden, but also for washing dishes, filling our fish tank and even filling the washing machine.
Thanks to Rainline, EastLife has a 210 litre rainwater butt & stand to give away to one lucky reader. To be in to win, simply visit the competitions page at www.eastlife.co.nz and complete the form. One entry per email address / person; entries close July 31, 2013. Winner notified by phone or email.

Myoga – true ginger ninja Ever heard of the ginger ninja? Well, it appears as though it has been alive and thriving in Kiwi gardens since visiting these shores in the 1990s from its native Japan, as Russell Fransham explains. Are you old enough to remember the first capsicums appearing in supermarkets and withering because nobody knew what they were? I remember people in the 1960s referring to them rather xenophobically as ‘foreign muck’. Now, we have whole-heartedly embraced their unique flavor and their many uses in our daily diet. These days we have another unusual immigrant awaiting to be fully unearthed by Kiwi gardeners and cooks. With just as many different culinary uses as capsicum and an exciting future in our cuisine, it is known as myoga (Zingiber mioga). Myoga is a native Japanese edible ginger that is a favourite in Japan and much sought after here by expat Japanese people. But it’s unknown by almost everyone else. Unlike other edible gingers, it is the unopened flower buds that are palatable and not the rhizomes. The buds emerge from the soil and are bronze-green and deliciously crunchy, similar to sweet, young, gingery celery heart, if eaten raw. Myoga is easy to grow and very productive, thriving in any friable, compost-rich garden soil. It doesn’t produce seed so can’t spread beyond the garden and become a pest, although it is a perennial that is easiest to manage if kept separate in its own garden bed. Because it is a woodland plant in the
wild – as are most gingers – it thrives in bright dappled light. It is easy to grow anywhere because it disappears below ground by the time the frosts arrive, emerging again in spring. Every spring I spread a layer of rich compost over the soil before the new shoots start to emerge. It is deciduous, losing its 90cm, leafy shoots in May and coming up again from the root mass in September. Commercial growers in Japan use untreated sawdust as a mulch around the plants to suppress weeds and provide a loose clean medium for the growing buds. The flower shoots come up from the soil separately from the leafy stems and the pale yellow flowers open at ground level. The unopened buds are harvested just as they appear through the soil.
Myoga can be cooked in many different, delicious ways. Unlike the well-known ginger root, the flavour is quite delicate and mild. It adds a subtle, gingery flavour to dishes, such as soups, stir-fries, many Asian-style seafood dishes and salads and is sensational when shredded and fastfried in tempura batter.
In NZ, this starts in February and continues into April if buds are picked regularly, which stimulates continued production. Outside myoga’s native range there seem to be no diseases or pests to attack it.
Myoga buds can be thinly sliced lengthwise and used in sushi, halved and dipped in teriyaki sauce as an appetiser, or finely shredded with lime juice as a stuffing for ripe avocado.
Myoga is also full of the same beneficial compounds that make all the edible gingers so valuable for human health and disease resistance. It certainly makes a terrific home garden crop, providing a nutritious, versatile vegetable through the autumn months, which can also be blanched and frozen whole for use throughout the year. Having grown myoga for many years, I can’t imagine doing without it now. – Contributed by Russell Fransham from Russell Fransham Subtropicals

The meaning of life... Bill Potter – the Business Maverick. Bill is a Speaker, FriendCoach*, blogger, author and... The 3Guy*. www.speakers.co.nz/billpotter.html www.btob.co.nz/the-business-maverick Oh, excuse me. Could you please tell me what Life is, exactly... Here is my take on it. I say that Life is so simple… it’s embarrassing. It is like a tube of toothpaste – there’s no going back. It is like a cappuccino – frothy on top, but the substance is underneath. It is like weeds; they flourish, in the
toughest circumstances. Life is like an airport – the end result is worth the hassle. It is like a banana – because the best is more than skin deep. It is like a bubble bath - you don’t know how good it is, until you try it. Life is like an egg - it is fragile on the outside, but it contains magic within. It is like chewing gum – you
find it in the most unusual places. Life is like a parking ticket – it is a random selection. Life is like Christmas – you can miss the substance for the glitz and the glitter! It is like eating vegetables – the harder it is to take, the better it is for you. Life is like smoking – we just do things anyway, even if it kills us. It’s like money – the only ones who criticise it… never have much of it! Life is like television – you have to change channels often, to enjoy the best. It’s
like underwear – too often we least appreciate those things closest to us. Life is like Social Media –a lot of it is artificial. Life is like buying a Lotto ticket – we don’t want to make the investment, but we’d really like to get the prize. Life is a choice. And guess what? You have to make it. Poep!! And... Life is like second teeth… usually, there is no second chance. Oh. So where exactly, is the best life? In the east of course. Cheers. – duitdammit@xtra.co.nz
The Importance of a Last Will and Testament Benjamin Franklin so famously once wrote, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” We all know that death is a certainty. It can strike anyone, anywhere and at anytime and it has devastating effects on family and friends.
set out in the Administration Act. These rules do not always mirror what you might expect to be ‘usual’ in certain circumstances leading to unwelcome surprises and frustration for your close family.
The least we can do for our loved ones is to take appropriate steps to ensure that our testamentary wishes are both clear and well known by putting in place a valid Last Will and Testament whilst alive.
By way of example, a surviving spouse or partner is not necessarily entitled to receive ALL of their deceased spouse or partner’s estate on death. This can result in family assets having to be sold in order to meet competing entitlements under the intestacy rules.
If you were to die without a Will you would be deemed to be intestate and your estate would be divided in accordance with the intestacy rules
Not having a Will also complicates the estate administration process and increases the risk of disputes arising amongst your family, particularly
where they have differing views on what your wishes might have been. This may lead to claims potentially being made against your estate by disgruntled family members. Having a valid Will should therefore be seen as an essential tool in your estate planning armoury. As with any legal document care must be taken to ensure your individual circumstances are properly reviewed and that your Will is carefully drafted to reflect your individual needs and circumstances. This is particularly important where you have complicating personal circumstances such as lumpy families, disputes or family

breakdowns or any other unusual family arrangements which might lead to claims being made against your estate. You should, therefore, always seek professional legal advice and assistance with the preparation of a Will. By doing so you will help to avoid or drastically reduce the risk of claims being made against your estate. You will also ensure that your loved ones have a clear and concise understanding of your intentions and wishes leaving little room for unnecessary arguments, disputes and heartache to arise after you have gone. – Richard Galbraith, Fencible Law

Time vs timing If you asked me what my parents bought me for my 10th birthday, I wouldn’t be able to tell you. I do, however, remember those special times that did not cost them a cent – my mum wrapping her arms around me when I was sad and telling me, “I love you my special little man” and dad hauling my brother and I out of bed in the middle of the night to watch our beloved All Blacks playing in the United Kingdom.
Jetts Fitness Centre have proved worthwhile.
Growing older I have discovered the importance of making time and also the importance of timing. I own a relatively new, fast-growing renovation business. Trading my builder’s apron, hammer and work boots for a desk, computer and a pile of plans needing to be priced was something I would have never contemplated 10 years ago.
I must admit I was a bit concerned when dad pulled his wallet out at the first stand we came to, but was relieved that we didn’t return home with a new tractor. It was great to be able to spend time with him. We were both amazed at the calibre of our young entrepreneurs and inventors and the wide range of new products on display. Dad and I had a great day.
However, the time was right recently to trade my 30 years experience as a builder and become a business man. Trading the hammer for a desk has presented challenges. Putting on weight and getting prescription glasses are two of them. A trip to the optician and membership at
So, on that note I think it’s time for me to sign off. But one last thought, my personal trainer at Jetts Howick (Daniel Nicholson) reminded me it only takes 2% of the hours in a week to train at the gym – pop in and see him if you need a push. – Nick Neben, Smith & Sons Howick
Being super busy with business is great, but it hasn’t stopped me from taking time for the important things. Recently I took a day off work to accompany my dad to the National Agricultural Fieldays at Mystery Creek. Dad has a lifestyle block in Drury and had never been before. What a fantastic day!

small dip recorded
Total Focus Principal, Greg Roy areinz, gives an update on the local real estate market happenings. The median house price rise has, for the first time since November 2012, finally had a drop – be it a small one. The REINZ stats for May for the Eastern Beaches was down to $687,000 from its all time high of $691,000 in April. Economists have predicted that we will still see a rise in the next 12 months but it will not be as dramatic as we have seen over previous months. It’s still the old supply and demand equation. On the demand side there is a lot of talk of overseas buyers driving the prices up. Tony Alexander, BNZ chief economist has conducted a survey of real estate agents and found that “only between 8% and 9% of New Zealand dwelling sales are to people located offshore and maybe half of those buyers intend shifting here.” On the supply side I checked on the number of dwelling consents issued and found that, for all New Zealand,
in April 2013, compared with April 2012, new dwellings consented, including apartments, increased 43 percent to 1,755. This is a move in the right direction to help ease things. Also of interest, for the same months, the value of non-residential buildings increased 35 percent to $308 million. A new supermarket for Howick? I note that online property journalist, Bob Day, reported that Foodstuffs (Auckland) Ltd, through one of its subsidiary companies has applied to Auckland Council for a new supermarket for Howick. The application is to establish a supermarket with gross floor area of 3484m2, plus a parking area for 163 cars on the corner of Wellington Street and Union Road. Foodstuffs operate the Pak ’n Save, Four Square and New World supermarkets. Rumour is that the new store will be a New World.

RECIPES DINING PRODUCTS PANTRY ROAST
Roast day perfectly done rain, what rain? there may have been blizzards in the south and downpours in Auckland but HElEn pErry didn’t notice a thing. Despite having a bird’s eye view of the waitemata Harbour from Mikano restaurant at Mechanics bay, i was oblivious to the weather being much too busy tucking into one of the most scrumptious roast dinners i’ve ever experienced. And i’ve had a lot of roasts in my time. in fact, the official launch of Selaks new Zealand roast Day, set down for Sunday, August 4, and which this year goes international, not only highlighted an old Sunday favourite but showed the humble roast can hold its own in the contemporary dining world. Of course, a roast dinner has become as much a part of the family table in new Zealand as it was in britain, home of the early colonists who came here for a new life bringing with them this oven baked tradition. then, over the years other immigrant nationalities adapted the roast to their new Kiwi way of life often giving it a cultural twist of its own. Croatian immigrants, the Selaks family, is the ideal example. the family’s original vineyard in west Auckland was frequently the venue for large celebrations, the roast, cooked on

with the fish and meats came roasted root vegetables with red wine vinegar and thyme, sautéed silverbeet with raisins and pinenuts (my favourite) and a salad of roasted baby beetroot with watercress and goat’s cheese.
today, be it beef, lamb, pork or chicken, the roast remains a favourite enjoying wide ranging ethnic interpretations. And Mikano’s interpretation at the launch struck the right flavour buds with guests.
All were served with Selaks reserve wines – what could have been better.
this year’s annual event also explores roasts of the world with ambassador and launch MC, nici wickes creating a selection of roast recipes with an international flavour. these can be found on the Selaks nZ roast Day website, which also features an eCookbook available for free download. it showcases selected recipes from nici and from previous ambassador chefs, johnny Schwass, jule biuso and paul jobin. but, after attending three past roast Day launches, my hat goes off to robert Flack and his team at Mikano. they certainly found their way to my heart through my stomach – so much culinary truth in that old saying. the Mikano menu started with a round of moreish canapés served with Selaks reserve Sparkling brut
Finally, the cinnamon and vanilla panna cotta was the best, its creamy, almost crème fraiche texture, teamed with red wine pear, pure perfection.
nV. then, at the table we were treated to entree platters of woodroasted vegetables including pickled grapes (a real novelty for many) and chargrilled garlic bruschetta. these were served with Selaks reserve Marlborough Sauvignon blanc 2013. by this time, i was starting to wonder if i would manage the actual roast. but, of course, i did – Croatian spitroasted lamb, latino roasted pork with a spice rub and, true to Mikano tradition, oven-baked pacific whole snapper with coconut chilli sambal.
i was going to write more, but frankly, i am still much too replete, need a sleep (just like the old days after mum’s Finnish take on the Sunday roast) and i just cannot do justice in words to such a successful afternoon. but i will remind readers to save the date – Sunday, August 4, 2013 – nationwide, in your dining room or someone else’s. be sure to make it a family event or one you share with good friends. bring back the good old days, or give the event your own international twist and wash it all down with a glass, or two, of premium Selaks wines – you’ll have a...feast!

The culinary magic of Secret Thai Garden may have bewitched Aucklanders from far-flung corners of the city, but there are bound to be some late bloomers – such as myself.
biting into the light, airy squares shot me straight to cloud nine. The soup, on the other hand, was grounded, hearty, and homely – a worthy pairing for the exquisite ambience. The additions of onion and tomato to the classic dish were unconventional but, nonetheless, pleasant.
The Otahuhu restaurant’s converts had gone to town about its wondrous charm so I had an idea of what to expect before my husband and I visited one evening.
Fresh smells of rain and timber filled the air – it even smelt like Thailand. We were certainly thousands of miles away by then; our minds luminous with memories of a popular holiday destination.
On this occasion, however, words and descriptions were utterly redundant. Past the shadowy entrance, we discovered a tranquil paradise of twinkling fairy lights, musical streams, genuine tuk-tuks (complete with WOF!) and cobbled stones. Natural elements such as stone, timber, iron and flora paved a passage that never seemed to end – our eyes widened with each step. Sitting down at our table at the end of this lovely labyrinth, we were still awe-struck by the dream-like setting. Luckily, smiley Thai hostesses were present to snap us out of it
It’s hard to keep a secret safe when it’s a good one. The same applied for NATALIE BRITTAN whose lips couldn’t stay sealed after experiencing Secret Thai Garden.
with drinks and menus demanding attention. It was refreshing to be asked how spicy we wanted our meals – hot for me, medium for him. For starters, we had Thai-style canapés and creamy chicken soup, tom ka gai. The former dish was a dainty version of prawn toast and
Then, the mains arrived accompanied by steaming heart and star-shaped mounds of rice crowned with colourful garnish. I had elected for yum talay from Secret Thai Garden’s new menu featuring unique provincial dishes of Thailand. And the label did not disappoint. In fact, the flavour was an alive and
kicking ringer for a spicy seafood salad in a plastic bag I had eaten straight off the streets of Bangkok. More refined, this version contained meatier ingredients such as mussels and prawns. The hubby’s ginger beef was zingy, saucy and peppered with seasonal twists courtesy of the chef in the shape of Brussels sprouts – now that was different. I could even spice things up with ruby red studs of chilli in a pottle of vinegar – a big bonus for my chilliinfatuated self. Taste buds burning flavour, it was just what we needed for a wet and miserable winter’s night. Although the place was vast and sprawling, it was intimate enough for the two of us. Secrets were whispered that night, secrets heavy on our hearts and we left feeling lighter, refreshed, and in love with Secret Thai Garden and what it represents.

motoring Mustang on silver screen From appearances in James Bond’s ‘Goldfinger’ to Steve McQueen’s ‘Bullitt’ and now ‘Need for Speed’, the Ford Mustang has had one of the most prolific entertainment careers with appearances in nearly 3000 feature films and TV shows. The 2000 remake of ‘Gone in Sixty Seconds’ produced another iconic pony in the form of Eleanor, the silver and black 1967 Mustang driven by Nicolas Cage. That car was recently sold at auction for more than US$1 million and has spawned numerous replicas. With a resume like that, Mustang may some day get its own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As Mustang celebrates its 50th birthday next year, it will hit the silver screen once again in DreamWorks Studios’ ‘Need for Speed’.
‘

The film’s star, Aaron Paul (‘Breaking Bad’), will be joined by a one-of-akind, customised Mustang playing the role of the hero car.
this Mustang has a 900hp (671kW) all-aluminium supercharged 5.8-litre V8 modified by Ford Racing.

To top it all off, the car gets a custom paint job with specially formulated silver topped by blue stripes that glow when struck by light in the dark.
Created with the help of designers at Ford, the one-off Mustang is perfectly cast for the high-stakes racing and stunts included in the film.
