Farewell my friend Hi everyone, June has arrived and with it the first real taste of winter – all those thunderstorms seem to have completely broken the drought and now it’s more water than most of us would like. But as ever, here in our eastern corner of Auckland, life is looking good despite the onset of the cooler weather.

This month’s cover shot of Seared Tuna with Mixed Salad and Wasabi was created by Masterchef New Zealand 2013 contestant Kelly Kaihea who cooked her way to the top three just missing out on a spot in the final. Kelly is also a director of The Beach House and Esplanade restaurants at Bucklands Beach and Eastern Beach respectively. The one sad note of recent times was the passing of local stalwart and council watchdog, Laurette Worsnop in April and then, in May, the death of her husband John. I used to welcome Laurette’s calls and loved her articulate speech and often pithy letters. I so regret not having the opportunity to thank her for all the times she made me smile. Hers and John’s passing, will leave a gap in the community.

PINK RIBBON fashion BREAKFAST A vibrant and fashionable crowd turned out in full force for the Pink Ribbon Fashion Breakfast held last month at Grangers Taphouse & Kitchen in Half Moon Bay Marina. Organised by local businesses Twirl Boutique, Marina Salon and Grangers, the fun-filled gala was a great effort which raised funds for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. Ten questions in ten minutes with

Norrie Montgomery

Celebrity photographer, Norrie Montgomery, known for his website The A-List, social pages in our Sunday papers and for photographing not just local but international stars, is a Howick resident with many awards and credits to his name. What first piqued your interest in photography and why did you choose to pursue it? I’ve always had a passion for photography; pictures mean more to me than the written word. I bought my first camera when I was a kid and photographed everything I saw. I loved to pick the photographs and relive all the adventures of taking those shots. That doesn’t change. This is the sort of job where no two days are the same; there’s not many jobs like that. It becomes a passion and it’s true what they say, if you really love what you do, it doesn’t feel like a job.

You are known for your social photography, in particular The A-List, but is there any other aspect of photography you would like to explore? I love weddings, portraiture, fashion, glamour, portfolios. I shoot everything and with each you need a different discipline. That’s why it’s such an exciting profession.

What type of event gets your creative juices flowing? I always love a good party but the bigger ones always stand out – TV awards, big launches, Auckland Cup Week and, one of my favourites, NZ Fashion Week. The latter has everything – glamour, fashion, celebrities, gossip, tantrums and tiaras. It is always a busy week for me. I also love big parties where people go all out to dress for the occasion. This year celebrates the fourth year of the Highlife A-List Winter Social at the Wharf. It’s a sellout every year and is something I really like doing and can see myself doing more in the future. Who are your favourite people to photograph and who has been the most interesting? Celebrities! I have probably photographed every celebrity who has come to NZ in the past 12 or so years – Lady Gaga, royalty, multi-millionaires, billionaires, rock stars, pop stars, movie stars and some disasters; Kardashians, prime ministers, presidents and sporting greats. I’m glad to say I haven’t really had a bad experience with any. The most interesting would be the movie stars and sport stars. Eva Longoria was a real sweetheart, Charlize Theron was Hollywood glamour personified, David Beckham, a super star, and Miranda Kerr, a beauty. What or who has shaped your style of photography? I can’t think of anyone who has really influenced my style but there are heaps of photographers that I admire, everyone from Horst P Horst and Helmut Newton to Richard Avedon, David Bailey and Bob Carlos Clarke. There is so much talent that you can gain knowledge and inspiration from. For example, go to art galleries and look at the way painters used light; they were the photographers of their day. Thing is they took months to capture an image which now takes 1/250 of a second. Do you have any tips for a young person considering a career in photography? There are more photographs being taken today than any time in history. Everyone with a smart phone can take a photo and with editing suites like Instagram people think that they are pretty good at it. But to make a

career in photography you have to ask: “can this profession make me a decent living? Will people buy my photographs or my services?” If you can’t make a living from it, keep it as a hobby. My big tip is: The only function setting you need on your camera is M. M means manual; it means you take control, you choose the aperture, your shutter speed and ISO. You create the photo not the computer chip so, take control, be adventurous, be creative and learn how to use this amazing piece of kit.

What areas/sites in Howick and surrounds have inspired you to capture them on film? I am very lucky to live on Somerville Road with the view to Whitford and it never ceases to amaze me every day. Driving my girls to school, I say to them, ‘just look at that view’. Fog over the estuary or bathed in a sunrise, it is always a beautiful sight; the best. But I must admit I have never taken a photograph, as a photo would never do it justice. Who needs a photograph when I can go out my gate and it’s right there. Photography aside what is your favourite sports/leisure activity? I love surfing. I haven’t had much time for it in recent years, but once a surfer, you’re one for life. I used to shoot surf contests in Europe, mainly France and spent six months living on the north shore of Hawaii shooting visiting surfers. Been there three times now and hoping to get back there this winter. The great thing about shooting surf is the ever-changing seascape, from sunrise to sunset. What’s the first thing you would do if you became Prime Minister? Wow, great question and I would do heaps. However, I think I would first put a stop on non-New Zealanders buying houses here. I would make it law that you have to be a NZ resident for five years before being permitted to buy a property; God knows how my kids are going to afford a house in Auckland. If you could invite three people to dinner – dead or alive – who would you ask? Easy – Jesus, Muhammad and Marilyn Monroe. I would get Jesus and Muhammad to sort out their act together to make this world a better place because they’re sure not singing from the same song sheet at present. Kelly Kaihea – mistress of the kitchen Best known as a director and Maitre d’ at The Beach House in Bucklands Beach, Kelly Kaihea’s culinary skills were virtually unknown to locals until she popped up as a contestant in Masterchef New Zealand 2013. Bowing out in the penultimate round, she took time to talk with Helen Perry about the grinding experience. After whipping, beating and creaming her way into the top three of Masterchef NZ 2013 some might think Kelly Kaihea had carved a place for herself in The Beach House kitchen beside husband and chef, Alex. “Heavens no, that’s strictly Alex’s domain,” says Kelly. “I’ve no desire to interfere there, I never have and never will, but at home, as a mum of two little girls, I guess it’s different. There’s still the breakfast, lunch and dinner routine to dice with.” However, after three months’ separation from her family, followed by an agonising 24-week wait before the final episode aired, and she could speak freely about the competition, life has been anything but routine. “It was Alex who pushed me to enter and I did so on the last day,” she explains. “It was a bit of a joke between us. Being from the hospitality industry I fully explained my restaurant interests and though I have never been part of our kitchen team or cooked there in any way, I still didn’t think I had a chance.”

unprepared for the long separation from her family. “I’m not an emotional person, I’ve always been very structured but Masterchef brought out the emotions in me. It was hugely stressful – the separation and the pressure of every show. On reaching the last couple of episodes I was completely exhausted.” It was The Grove’s chef and owner Ben Bayly’s dish which nearly did it in for Kelly. “His quail was perfection. I was thinking, I can’t do this, I’m just an amateur not top flight restauranttrained chef. I was so stressed I very nearly walked off the show.” The pressure didn’t stop once Kelly was eliminated from the top three – a smidgen too much creme fraiche on the marinated snapper being the difference between making the final and leaving.

Surprised to make the auditions, Kelly says while the first test went ‘okay’ she never thought to make the first 24. “Then when I reached the top 15 I was thinking, ‘oh, so I’m still here’. From there, it just snowballed.”

On arriving home, she recalls crying for nearly three hours and staying indoors for almost three weeks. “It was hard. For months I’d lived another life – no children to worry about, travelling here and there and walking into the Masterchef kitchen with no idea of what the challenge might be. Then after cooking and filming all day, being too tired to cook at night yet still needing to practise newly learned techniques and then getting the inspiration to do so at 2am.

Never expecting her personal Masterchef journey to take three months, Kelly says she was

After re-adjusting to her ‘old life’, Kelly says things went quiet until the first episode screened in February. Suddenly people realised she was among the contestants and the pressure was back on to keep mum. Furthermore, because she had grown personally throughout the series and formed many new friendships, Kelly was thinking about what she could take from the experience. “I was keen to do something for me.” But it was impossible to pursue new directions until the final had aired. Now that it has, and she is no longer fears letting seasonal secrets slip,

Kelly can focus on the future. With several ideas bubbling away in her personal ideas pot, she and a florist friend are considering running classes in plating, cooking, floristry, event planning and interior design – the latter making use of Kelly’s training and passion for this field. “I’ve also launched my Facebook page and there may still be some commitments associated with the show. But the restaurants no longer need my constant presence so I can plan how to use newfound skills. Fortunately, there are plenty of options in the pantry.”

Seared tuna with mixed salad and wasabi INGREDIENTS:

METHOD:

• 2tbsp white sesame seeds toasted • 150-250g premium big eye tuna loin • Flaky sea salt, fresh ground pepper • Bunch fresh coriander • 2tsp rice bran oil • 1tsp Japanese wasabi paste Miso Dressing • 24g white miso paste • 20ml rice wine vinegar • 6ml sesame oil • 10ml light soy • 75ml vegetable oil • 25ml water • (1/4tsp Japanese wasabi optional)

Salad • 8 fresh Italian parsley leaves • 8 fresh coriander leaves • 7 cherry tomatoes halved • 1 cup mesclun leaves • 1 cup white cabbage shredded • 1/2 cup cucumber julienned • 1/2 cup spring onion finely sliced • 2tsp white sesame seeds toasted Garnish • Balsamic glaze • Japanese wasabi paste • Coriander leaves • Julienned/mandolin fresh beetroot, carrot and spring onion

Rub tuna loin in oil and apply a thin coat of salt and pepper. Place in fry pan at a high temp and seal all four sides, approx 2mins each side. Allow to cool in fridge or to room temp. Rub with wasabi and roll in finely chopped coriander and toasted sesame seeds then roll in plastic wrap and place in fridge until needed. In a bowl whisk miso paste and vinegar slowly, add oil while whisking and soy. Add water and whisk until combined. Taste and add wasabi if desired. Set aside.

Place all salad ingredients into a bowl and toss; add the desired amount of dressing. To plate, trace the rim of the plate with balsamic, dot wasabi paste around inner edge and place tomato halves next to them. Pile salad into middle of the plate. Slice tuna into thin slices and lay around edge of salad. Top with julienned beetroot, carrot and spring onion. Add some coriander and parsley leaves to finish. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds, add some flaky sea salt to tuna if desired. Enjoy.

South by southwest Country music duo Helen and Ian Braithwaite may be miles away from Beachlands and Maraetai, but their ties to the coastal suburbs remain strong as NATALIE BRITTAN discovered. Former residents of the neighbouring areas of Papakura and Pukekohe, Helen and Ian Braithwaite are life members of the Beachlands Maraetai Country & Variety Music Club which meets every Thursday at the Maraetai Bowling Club. Musically inclined from an early age, Helen’s love for country music stemmed from her grandmother’s record player which played songs from old greats such as Tex Morton.

American Bob Everhart, president of the National Traditional Country Music Association in the USA. Bob was on the lookout for acts to perform at the National Old Time Music Festival in Anita, Iowa. “He said, ‘How would you like to be on American TV?’” Helen recalls. “I said, ‘yes, we’d love to’!” So, the Braithwaites headed for Iowa in 2007, where they performed at the festival and became the first of 11 Kiwi

Later, through music, Helen met husband, Ian, who was a drummer in an accordion band at that time. Not unsurprisingly, music truly became the food of love for the couple, and it wasn’t long before Helen taught Ian how to play the guitar.

Since then, they have been heavily involved in the country music scene. However, after 40 years, Helen and Ian are strumming a different tune on the North Island west coast where they own and operate the Taranaki Country Music Hall of Fame in rural Manaia. A museum, performance venue and one of the town’s biggest attractions, the hall of fame receives visitors from far and wide. And if that isn’t enough to keep these two musicians busy, they also tour the country performing regularly at various events. During their travels, the couple managed to attract the attention of

country musicians to be inducted into America’s Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame. “I was blown away; it was an amazing festival!” says Helen. “There were 10 stages and 600 acts. We even had a stage named after us!”

three albums, all of which have received airtime in Germany, USA and Australia. They have also been recognised with a multitude of awards.

They loved it so much they went back again in 2008.

Kelly cuts a fine seam

Living the fast life doesn’t mean a constant round of celebrity parties and jet-setting holidays for Kelly Coe, founder of fashion label Augustine. But, as Helen Perry discovered, it does mean a schedule that keeps her on the go day and night.

Running a business which has three flagship stores, supplies nationwide to 38 fashion boutiques and requires one week every three months to be spent in China, means the office is as close as the phone clutched in Kelly Coe’s hand. It is a multi-purpose tool from which she emails, phones, Facebooks and literally runs her company while still managing busy family commitments. At just 30 years old, the Bucklands Beach resident can recount a career that has zipped along at pace. The past four years has seen the launch of Augustine stores in Mt Maunganui, Newmarket and Ponsonby plus a demand for Kelly’s designs all over the country. In that time she has also established a solid commercial relationship with Chinese manufacturers and become a mother twice over – daughter Indiana is three years old and sister Demi, 18 months. Now Kelly is bringing her label to Howick. From mid-July Twirl in The Terraces will stock Augustine, providing local women with this beautiful and highly affordable fashion range. Having initially embarked on an advertising career, it took just one two-week internship for Kelly to realise the industry wasn’t for her – “I hated it.” Abandoning that path she moved into merchandising for Nike, a job that regularly took her around the country and to Melbourne. “I learnt such a lot. Nike was fastidious. Everything had to be carried out perfectly; product excellence and customer satisfaction were paramount.” Two years later and ready for change, Kelly accepted a modelling contract in Sydney – the willowy brunette already had considerable modelling experience in Auckland. www.eastlife.co.nz

Then, six weeks before leaving she met Nathan Coe. They were a seamless fit and after Kelly’s departure, property developer Nathan flew to Sydney every weekend for a month. “Then I returned for a function and ended up staying,” Kelly laughs. “Three years later we were married.” Back in Auckland, Kelly joined one of the country’s largest clothing manufacturers, High Society. “What I learned in three years there I couldn’t have learnt in 10 elsewhere. I’d always loved clothes and dressing up. As brand manager, the experience gained was invaluable. However, I could see a gap in the 20s to 40s market calling for affordable, dressy daywear.” Kelly decided to go it on her own. With a supportive and business-savvy husband, she took to the drawing board, set up appointments with 20 companies in China and headed to what is often called, the fabric capital of the world. “New Zealand-made would have been ideal but by 2008 the market was changing. People wanted great clothes but not at the price of New Zealand-made. We decided our first point of difference had to be affordability so China it was.” Despite many pitfalls, on her 18th appointment, Kelly struck patternmaking gold – a company that could deliver everything she asked and has done so for four years. “Now, I part design my range here but finish it in China. The fabric market I visit covers an area something like Picton Street in Howick to Cockle Bay and is just amazing. “When I see the fabrics I can visualise the design. The patterns and colours are so diverse I’ve never brought back one and seen it here. They fit my philosophy of ‘lux daywear’ which is to add a splash of sparkle and colour to clothing.

I also wanted to create garments which would encourage young mums to dress attractively. So often you see smartly dressed children while mum looks like she’s just climbed out of bed.” With her daughters now in Porse care two days a week, Kelly uses one of those days for office work and the other she spends at the Newmarket store. “Being hands-on puts me in touch with customers, I hear what they want and like. It is really important for me to listen and get a real feel for what they are saying.” Having now returned to the area where she spent the first eight years

of her childhood, Kelly says she loves the challenges in her ‘east life’. “We are a full-on couple; a full-on family, really. We are used to doing a lot in a short space of time, but living here, near the sea, does relax us and gives shape to our family life. That’s why I’m so thrilled Twirl will soon stock the Augustine range; I’m glad it will be so readily available to local women.” And, what of the name Augustine? Kelly laughs – “August is my birthday month and that of other family members. I’ve always liked August as a boy’s name too. However, having had girls, the next best thing was to name the business after August and add the ‘tine’ to make it more feminine. It’s as simple as that!” eastlife | june 2013 |

Kiwisaver – bLESSING FOR FIRST HOME BUYERS The introduction of Kiwisaver in 2007 presented all working New Zealanders with the difficult decision of whether or not to ‘opt in’ to a Kiwisaver Scheme. There are still varied opinions as to the actual long term benefits of Kiwisaver. However, one area where it has proven to be extremely beneficial is for first home buyers of all ages. With Auckland house prices and living costs soaring, the Kiwi dream of buying a first home is becoming a distant reality for most average New Zealanders. That is, of course,

With regular contributions your available Kiwisaver funds can grow surprisingly high over 3-5 years and, in the case of couples, both Kiwisaver funds can usually be withdrawn for the same property where both parties

are eligible for withdrawal. The only issue to be aware of is that your Kiwisaver funds generally cannot be used to pay a deposit amount to the real estate agent or vendor directly. They can only be used by your solicitor towards the purchase price on the settlement date. When completing the sale and purchase agreement it is therefore important to make sure that you don’t commit to paying an initial deposit of any more than what you can immediately afford to pay out of your own cash resources without using your Kiwisaver funds.

To be eligible to withdraw your Kiwisaver funds you must: • Have been a Kiwisaver member for three years or more; • Not have previously owned an interest in property; and • Intend to live in the property as your home. Water, water may be everywhere right now, but the cost at the tap remains the same, as JON RAWLINSON reveals.

Boutros Boutros Ghali, former UN Secretary General, said “wars of [this] century will be fought over water.” Considering my recent dealings with Watercare, it’s time for an opening salvo! Auckland Council organisation, Watercare, provides user-pays water services. Actual and estimated meter readings are taken on alternate months, and consumers billed accordingly. However, what happens when estimates don’t match up with readings on the meters outside our homes and we are charged for water we haven’t used? After moving to a new home I received an estimate much higher than the reading. I supplied my reading and was issued with a new bill. The company mistakenly based this estimate, in part, on previous owners’ usage. However, when I explained I would prefer to supply my own readings, rather than receive estimates, a Watercare customer service person responded: “Watercare is entitled to charge on the basis of estimated water consumption because, by using Watercare’s services, you accept the terms of the contract, and those terms state that Watercare may estimate water consumption and

charge accordingly... if estimated invoices are not paid, it may incur a late payment fee.” Terms and conditions, huh? Although I never signed anything or ticked any boxes, by turning on my tap, a contract was formed. Hopefully the Ts&Cs don’t also require I relinquish my first born, or become part of a human-centipede-style experiment! Seriously though, surely a contract whereby the ‘signatory’ has to ‘agree’, or be without an essential resource, is one entered into under duress, particularly when there is no equivalent competing supplier. I found it hard to believe that in cases where Watercare inadvertently overcharges customers, it would insist on payment under threat of penalty. So, I asked a few more questions. A representative replied, stating bills would be reissued if: “The next read date is greater than 10 days from today; or the difference in consumption is greater than 8kl; or the actual consumption is less than 50%.” But what happens if I have been overcharged by, say 40%? Could Watercare insist I pay anyway? Their response: “We treat each request to re-bill on a case-by-case basis. Your inference, that Watercare insists customers pay more than they owe when an actual

or manual meter reading has been taken, is simply not correct.” Simply not correct? Well, maybe it’s a little correct, otherwise the company would reissue bills in all cases, with no need for any criteria; at least that’s where my logic leads. When my next estimated bill arrived, I was again overcharged, this time by less than 40%. I provided a reading and requested an accurate bill. It was supplied and duly paid.

I contacted Watercare, thanking them for billing me correctly. But, I asked why, although my case did not meet their criteria, this was done. Eventually, their reason was forthcoming:

In your case it was deemed appropriate to re-bill... because you repeatedly expressed your dissatisfaction about the impact of the 4 kilo litre difference. Based on that as a goodwill gesture, on this occasion we have re-billed the invoice.”

However, I wonder if others, overcharged by Watercare – who don’t meet the criteria – would be successful, should they not become as big a pain in the water closet as I have clearly been. A few hundred litres or a few dollars is just a drop in the bucket; but surely consumers should be entitled to be billed only for the water they use?

Yasawa Island – island in THE the SUN sun ISLAND IN When winter is at its worst in New Zealand there’s nothing like retreating to sunnier shores. EastLife managing director REAY NEBEN soon learned that Yasawa Island provided respite from rain and cold.

On a wet, cold, winter day in New Zealand there is nothing more exciting than sitting in an airline lounge imagining the prospect of where and how hot you will be in three hours time. The Pacific PaciďŹ c offers wonderful holiday options which provide a taste of different foods and cultures and which also take the sting out of winter if only for a week or two. One such destination is Yasawa Island, a remote island in the far north of Fiji. A recent stay at the Yasawa Beach Resort and Spa realised a long time dream to visit this luxurious holiday hideaway. After landing in Nadi we boarded the small, twin-engine plane which flies ies daily at 2pm to Yasawa. The flight ight took about 40 minutes during which travellers could look down on hundreds of uninhabited islands. Landing on the small runway, stretching the width of the island, was breath-taking in more ways than one! Once landed, we were met by resort staff and transported to our accommodation. At that stage we had no idea of what we had let ourselves in for.

After a short and bumpy drive, we descended a hill and there, in the middle of nowhere, was paradise – golden sands, blue, blue water and a resort to die for. With only 16 bures, guest numbers are always limited and, in fact, during our stay, employees outnumbered guests. Impressively, from the time we arrived all staff members knew the first ďŹ rst names of guests making everyone feel welcome and special. Importantly, this was a resort where we could be and do virtually anything we wanted. It was certainly aimed at couples and the dining room was set for twosomes; personal privacy the priority. Pre-dinner drinks was the one time guests gathered together to discuss the activities of that day. The Sandpaper was delivered to us daily, advising on who was arriving the next day and who was leaving. As there was only one flight ight per day guests always left at the same time so, being in the foyer to say goodbye to someone you might have met only a day or two earlier, became a ritual. Among activities provided were picnics on remote beaches and, on our last day, we were seated on the

beach and served an exquisite array of food. Interestingly, The Yasawa Beach Resort and Spa is situated on the same island which is visited by the Blue Lagoon cruise boat. Bures were well presented and had both air conditioning and fans. The bathroom featured a double shower and the added luxury of an outdoor shower was magic. All products provided were Fiji Pure and replenished twice a day. Outside every bure was a coconut with a green flag ag to be used to let housekeeping know whether to service the room or not. We never actually saw our room being cleaned as the girls seemed to materialise

when we were elsewhere. For those seeking the ultimate in luxury, the resort had one extra infinity special bure with its own inďŹ nity pool and private beach. Often visited by American movie stars who want to escape the public and be completely private, it was a real gem. With the resort catering for all needs – a variety of activities for those wanting action or space to do absolutely nothing – it was a true escape from our usual bustling world. There was no television and poor cell phone reception although there was wifi in the main building for guest wiďŹ use. For those seeking a very special getaway with luxury galore, Yasawa Beach Resort and Spa is the answer.

Mel Bartholomew strikes me as a sensible man and a practical gardener. his new book, Square Metre Gardening, clearly helps people grow fruitful gardens in small spaces, pretty well regardless of conditions – patio, balcony, shade, sun, hillside or slope. In fact, he has spent 30 years perfecting the art of using just a few or every square metre, literally. Mel asks: “Do I really want a 10 metre row of cabbages? That would be at least 30 cabbages spaced 30cm apart. Why would I want 30 cabbages to be ready all at the same time? That’s too much cabbage to enjoy at the same time by one homeowner. how many people go to the shops and buy 30 cabbages once a year?” With those questions in mind, Mel began reviewing the single row method of vegetable growing, looking at ways to stagger planting and to plant less. he began experimenting with spacing, location and creating the perfect soil mix. To cut a long bean short, he came up with the idea of

A legend, The Fall Guys? Dragging my work-weary body to Newmarket to watch a Kiwi flick I’d heard little about was unlikely to be an afternoon delight. However, editors will have their way and mine was right on the money. The Fall Guys may not prove a Kiwi cinema classic, but it offers sound camera work, fair acting, and a wellcrafted, engaging narrative with a healthy dose of twists. The independent comedy/crime caper follows three wanna-be criminals with quite a tale to tell to police about cases of heroin that ‘accidently’ fell into their possession. Made by Howick’s own Scott Boswell and Rhys Cain, it’s not an essential exploration of Kiwi culture, and nor does it pretend to be, but I would say it is essential viewing. American and British influences are strongly felt – I couldn’t help drawing comparisons to The Usual Suspects and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. However, with comparatively

few New Zealand flicks of this genre on which to draw, such influences would be unavoidable. When Howick and Pakuranga Times journalist, Daniel Silverton, spoke to the pair prior to an advanced screening, Scott said: “The film [Quentin] Tarantino would make if he was born in Auckland... a twisted, balls-to-the-wall gangster

That’s probably a long bow to draw; unfortunately, if Tarantino was born in Howick, odds are he’d be working the popcorn machine instead. No dig at my home town intended, it’s just that this film had me wondering if cultural cringe is still alive in the suburbs.

It’s also a pity that local picture houses – such as the Monterey, whose original site is visible during a scene shot at All Saints Church in Howick – and the mainstream moguls, didn’t offer these filmmakers the chance to show this movie in their home town. Well done Rialto.

However, Howick-based portrait photographer Lisa Harrington, is experiencing an increase in demand for self-portraits, and says that’s a very good thing. Lisa Harrington says one of the best things about being a photographer is that she can capture a person’s spirit, their joie de vivre, and translate that into an image that will last indefinitely. “I take it as a very real privilege to be given the chance to photograph someone, it’s a sign of trust,” she says. “I did trust Lisa,” Maraetai resident Julie Smith says about her Beauty Photo Shoot. “I knew that she would capture my natural style and that’s exactly what she did.” Julie’s Before and After photos hang proudly in the Howick Studio and often raise comment from visitors who are wowed by the stunning shots. Julie has fond memories of the day – a morning of pampering, makeup and hair styling – followed by a surprisingly fun photo shoot. “I was

nervous at first,” Julie admits. “After all, the attention’s on you. It felt a little like being a movie star. But after the pamper session I felt relaxed and Lisa’s easy-going manner and quick work made me completely comfortable.” Lisa had advised Julie to bring in a selection of clothes from her own wardrobe, clothes that expressed who she was. “At first I was surprised that Lisa had asked for me to bring in some fitting clothes, because my everyday wear is oversized jumpers – casual and comfy. But she was right. The fitted clothes are so flattering.” Julie was so delighted with the images that she gifted one to her mother and hung the rest in her own home where she could enjoy them. “Every time I pass the photo of me in the spotted black dress I go, ‘wow that’s me’, and smile. It’s thrilling, a

Are your relationships GINNY MCARTHUR – Outlook for Life. Ginny is not only a nutritionalist and personal trainer but also a marathon runner and regular on Newstalk ZB. No, I haven’t turned into an agony aunt, but how can I convince you that relationships with both food and exercise are essential for good health and wellbeing? We seem to have forgotten that food is our fuel and is responsible for the very essence of who we are as physical beings. We need to remake the connections between good nutrient-dense foods and good health, and poor food choices with little or no nutrients and poor health. A diet of high fat, high sugar, high sodium, low fibre processed food = heart disease, diabetes, cancer and contributes to chronic fatigue, gout and some arthritis.

Surely we and our children deserve better? A diet which is high in fibre and wholefoods has the potential to prevent a number of cancers, heart disease and diabetes. A huge part of the problem is that we are time poor and rely on grabbing takeaway meals on the way home from work when we are too tired to cook. This quickly becomes habit and our culture around evening family meals starts to change. You would be truly alarmed to learn of the numbers of intelligent, wellmeaning people I see weekly who no longer cook! Buying on the way home every night has become the norm.

Look at this; • Fish and chips 1100 calories, 17 teaspoons sugar, 13 teaspoon fat per average serve. • Pizza (medium thick crust) 1746 calories, 31 teaspoons sugar, 17.5 teaspoons fat. • Large burger combo (with fries and coke) 1300 calories, 38 teaspoons sugar, 8.8 teaspoons fat. Let’s say you start your day with a good breakfast but then grab a burger for lunch and a pizza for dinner. If this happens on a regular basis you become a ticking health time bomb of excess sugar and fat with no fibre or nutrients to help your body to recover. You will feel too tired to exercise, so there goes the life-saving benefits of getting off the couch! The answer is to make small changes that will start to take effect straight away and that you can continue for a lifetime. I’m not saying that you have to live on celery sticks; I strongly believe in an 80-20 approach but we can’t go on living as we do.

We need to start eating foods that: • Boost brain power and mental clarity • Improve mood and energy levels • Support the immune system • Protect our hearts Healthy food choices make you feel and look great. Consider: • Raw fruits and veggies (is everything you eat cooked or processed?) • Low GI carbohydrates, wholemeal grains, beans and legumes, brown or basmati rice and kumara. Foods that release their glucose slowly help you to feel full, calm and balanced, increasing energy levels. • Lean proteins for growth and repair (healthy skin hair and nails) – chicken, lean meat, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds, beans and sprouts. • Good fats. Nuts, seeds, avocados, olive oil, oily fish are essential fatty acids that the body needs and cannot make for itself. Use the guidelines to construct your diet 80% of the time and feel the difference.

Ritz-ing FROM THE EAST A taste of the high life has come to neighbouring suburb Mt Wellington, and it’s here to stay. EastLife’s NATALIE BRITTAN stole away one sunny afternoon to enjoy high tea at the Waipuna Hotel & Conference Centre.

Imagine Hansel and gretel’s faces when they discovered the gingerbread house with its layer upon layer of edible surprises.

Clearly, the bar had been set high. But it was only when three tiers of delectable morsels emerged, that I knew just how high.

unlike the well-loved fairytale, there are no nasty surprises in this story. My dining partner and I were greeted by a charming setting – white linen and blue and white china paired with a view overlooking the shimmering Panmure lagoon and a piercing blue sky.

Without further ado, we set about conquering the mountain from the top. A merry-go-round of savoury bites encircled a nest of strawberry Persian candy floss – I was a starstruck child at the fairground.

Just launched this month, high tea is a first for Waipuna with the menu a creation of executive chef, Andrew Methven, who plans to keep introducing new seasonal flavours. Meanwhile, the tea poured – a rosehip and hibiscus blend – and bubbly flowing, our journey began with a sophisticated appetiser of hot smoked salmon in a sesame cone served in a glass. The tuile-like wafer crunched, the silky salmon seduced and the fresh tendrils of salad danced on our taste buds – a perfectly-balanced, harmonious Neptunian symphony.

The lines of traditional and contemporary blurred, as a crusty bruschetta toyed with goat’s cheese and tapenade, a cucumber sandwich kicked with rocket and mustard, and a salted caramel macaron oozed with gooey, sticky indulgence. Sweet may have been the code name for the lower two tiers, but it wasn’t cloying. A ruby red strawberry jelly with vanilla mousse stole the show, a playful siren with the cutest cloud of mousse on its head – a “mini cheesecake”, pronounced my partner. Other treats were more mature, such as a lemon poppy cupcake with a melt-in-the-mouth butter cream, and

a saffron and pistachio cake with lavender icing. Finally, no high tea is complete without scones and, again, no detail was spared. Served with unrestrained amounts of jam and cream, the date and orange scones were sublime. The cream, I was told, mimics Devon clotted cream from the Ritz, achieved

with a mix of ricotta and whipped cream – subtle, but heavier and more decadent than plain cream. Several dollops later, interspersed with sips of bubbly and refreshing tea, it was a divine note to end on. Sated, we left Waipuna leaving a trail of sweet memories – a path I’m sure to revisit sooner than expected!

Touted Auckland’s first dessert-only restaurant, Milse (pronounced millsay) certainly created a sugar rush of diabetic proportions when it opened recently at The Pavilions in Britomart. Curious to see what the hype was, I visited the hidden establishment one afternoon with some like-minded dessert fanatics. Down a cut-out kaleidoscope-esque tunnel we each traipsed, like Alice to Wonderland, and along the way a myriad of colourful morsels tempted eyes and taste buds.

Of course, the tunnel was jam packed with people trying to decide on a sweet delight – we were all passengers queuing for the dessert train. Nothing was labelled, and the candy-coloured domes and bars looked poised in their glass enclosures. Needless to say, we had a long wait ahead of us – just what we needed as the menu was enough to render the most decisive person helpless. When we finally cosied up in a little cave at the end of the tunnel, we had decided on a mango and coconut gelato on a stick; a rhubarb, custard

and olive oil verrine (layered dessert in a glass); a bitter chocolate and chilli macaron; cherry, lemon curd, pistachio and white chocolate gateaux (which strangely resembled the gelato on a stick); and a Valrhona chocolate, Armagnac and salted caramel gateaux. Jaw-droppingly beautiful, and stunning on a plate, it was as if angels had descended from above bearing heavenly treasures. And did they deliver? They looked and sounded magical enough, but

those looking for substantial or more traditional desserts fresh out of the oven – think baked cheesecakes, gooey puddings, custards and humble crumbles – may find something amiss. Otherwise sensational, adventurous eaters and patisserie gourmands will be thrilled. For me, the mango and coconut gelato stole the show and melted with little persuasion, tasting of pure, golden summer on a stick. Definitely a must-try and an eyeopening experience (tip: brush up on a glossary of French food!), I’ll be back for an encore – preferably in the evening for Milse’s a la carte menu.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD:

• 4 x 150 grams King Salmon portions • 400 grams cauliflower florets • 1 gram Marlborough saffron threads • 300 ml milk • 200 ml cream • 30 ml olive oil/canola oil • Sea salt and black pepper to season • Juice from half a lemon

Bring milk and cream to a boil in a pot slowly ensuring that the cream does not burn, add cauliflower and saffron.

Sauce Vierge • 1/2 cup chopped coriander leaves • 20 cherry tomatoes • 6 fresh basil leaves • 15 grams roasted and crushed coriander seeds • Sea salt and black pepper to taste • Juice from half a lemon • 75 ml olive oil

Cook till cauliflower is soft, drain and puree in a food processor, adding drained liquid as necessary to form a thick puree. Add lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste and keep hot. For sauce vierge warm the olive oil and combine with rest of the sauce ingredients. Hold at room temperature. Heat a pan, add olive oil and sear the salmon portions skin side first, add salt and pepper to taste. Finish cooking the salmon portions in the oven for 4 minutes.

treat from Jamie Oliver In April, EastLife featured an interview with international celebrity chef Jamie Oliver who talked about good nutrition and the role played by home gardens. This month we share some of his pukka pizza ideas.

With Jamie’s own range of wood-fired ovens due to hit the shelves here in New Zealand in the coming months, it’ll soon be time to tuck in and shout: ‘Viva l ‘Italia!’ Until then, loosen your belts as we’re in for a bellissimo ride through Italy, thanks to these great pizza toppings which can crown your own special home-made dough base, a commercial base if more convenient or see Jamie’s Italy for his personal dough recipe.

Spicy salami, courgette, basil, tomato and mozzarella • 4 tablespoons tomato sauce (see recipe) • 6 thin slices of firm courgette • 8 fresh basil leaves • 10 thin slices of spicy salami • 85g mozzarella

• olive oil • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Smear tomato sauce evenly over the pizza base. Lay over courgettes and basil, then salami – you want this to go on last so it goes crispy. Place small pieces of mozzarella in between the gaps, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Cook until crisp and golden.

Potatoes, mozzarella, rosemary, thyme and tomatoes • 6 tablespoons tomato sauce (see recipe) • 4 cooked new potatoes • small handful of fresh rosemary leaves • 1 teaspoon thyme tips • extra virgin olive oil • lemon juice • salt and freshly ground black pepper • 85g mozzarella

glug of olive oil, a small squeeze of lemon juice and a pinch of salt and pepper. Scatter them over the pizza base and put small torn-up pieces of mozzarella into the gaps. Cook until crisp and golden.

For the tomato sauce

• extra virgin olive oil • 1 clove of garlic, peeled and finely sliced • a bunch of fresh basil, leaves picked Smear the tomato sauce evenly over • 1 x 400g tin of good-quality plum the pizza base. To make tomato sauce, heat a saucepan, add a splash of oil and the sliced garlic and cook gently. When the garlic has turned light golden, add half the basil, the tomatoes and a few pinches of salt and pepper. I fell in love with Nelson and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since.” – Blake Twigden

Leaving the Whitford nest Whitford is losing one of its most famous citizens. Blake Twigden has decided to sell his lovely home and adjoining bird park and the latter, though not as illustrious as his paintings, nevertheless is a work of avian art which may now be lost to Auckland. HELEN PERRY revisited the artist seven years after first meeting him.

Internationally acclaimed artist Blake Twigden, also of Whitford Bird Park fame, is winging his way south – forever. For the past 25 years Blake has developed, tended and groomed his five-acre rural sanctuary encompassing a one-acre bird park enveloped by native bush, as if it were his most precious painting. But at 70, Blake is seeking new challenges in life, a visit to Nelson two years ago sparking a desire for change. “I just fell in love with Nelson and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since,” he says.

Then, earlier this year Blake spotted the perfect property down south – a gracious, two-storey character home on a quarter-acre section studded with trees and wandering paths. He knew he had found inspiration for life’s next brush stroke. On purchasing the property two months ago, Blake set about readying his own for sale. Crunch time for tenders is June 4, just as this month’s EastLife hits the streets so, I called on Blake to see just what it was he was leaving behind. A lot, it seems. The last time I sat in Blake’s kitchen was more than seven years ago when

he prepared and cooked us a divine lunch of crepes, scones and guava conserve. Hard work, a healthy diet and metabolism (of benefit to some and a drawback for others, as in moi) has kept his figure trim despite whipping up glorious meals for visitors. This time it was butter sautéed fennel, fresh peppered tomatoes and drizzled stuffed mushrooms complemented by a glass of fruity Gewurztraminer – who would have thought we were there to talk décor and design? Not when it was all too easy to discuss a myriad of topics that might start a world war in some homes but between friends just generated a feeling of intense pleasure and an appreciation that there are still people in this world with a balanced view on life – like us two. Just kidding. More to the point, breaking bread with companions has traditionally been a way of relaxing and making others feel comfortable and the Twigden home is definitely a place where one can feel extremely comfortable. The informal country-style kitchen/ dining room with beautifully crafted Kauri cabinetry exudes homeliness of the kind that makes a house a home. Not a home of pristine designer codes or lashings of minimalistic white, the interior is light, warm and spacious – an agreeable meld of traditional and contemporary. www.eastlife.co.nz

A generously proportioned lounge with windows/French doors on either side, plus fireplace, easily accommodates big sofas, and an eclectic array of furniture, even a baby Grand. There are three double bedrooms including the stately master bedroom with dressing room and absolutely massive adjoining bathroom – almost as big as an inner city studio! With ample off-street parking the original garage has long been converted to a light-filled studio or second living. There, a tropical twist makes for a room where work or play are equally at home. With its north-eastern outlook in one direction – sheltered courtyard, paddocks, sea views and the distant blue of Waiheke and Coromandel – plus lush flora at every other corner, there is a real sense of privacy and calm. Near the front door, a fern-shrouded waterway is home to countless frogs, while sheep keep the grass down in nearby paddocks. And, of course, over the fence is Blake’s magical bird park, testimony to his ardent love of nature. But he adds that prospective buyers daunted by such a commitment should be reassured that there are homes waiting for the birds all over New Zealand if need be – “the park doesn’t have to be a drawback.” Birds or no birds, whoever purchases this well-loved home, with its thousands of native plants, just a

minute or two from Whitford Village, will surely be well pleased. They are gaining a unique heritage property. Yet, after 25 years, one cannot conceive that this carefully nurtured paradise will no longer be Blake’s home.

Sadly, this charming man, with an insatiable love for preserving the environment, and whose paintings grace some of the world’s most prestigious homes and galleries, is determined to fly south, where undoubtedly he will find the perfect roost. eastlife | june 2013 |

Conservation scheme rocks Australia may be New Zealand’s largest close neighbour with the two countries rubbing along together nicely but as HELEN PERRY discovered, housing styles this side of the Tasman and that, reflect different architectural directions. Driving through the countryside surrounding Adelaide, the houses are a revelation, in particular, materials used and the way in which Australian design has taken the climate, especially the fierce sun, into account. In fact, the abundance of stone houses, many dating back to the 1800s, as well as those being duplicated today, at least in part, is impressive.

houses and commercial buildings. The Act also aims to ensure future development doesn’t detract from the special character of the district and that heritage attributes continue to be preserved. When travelling through the region’s townships it is fascinating to see large numbers of houses and other

And while many newer homes feature a stone or rock façade, with brick to the sides and rear, it is the conservation of historic stone homes (many being Federation bungalow and villa style), particularly in the Barossa Valley that is so impressive. The new Character Preservation (Barossa Valley) Act of 2012, recognises, protects and seeks to enhance the special character of the district and this includes its

buildings, being actively restored. In Tanunda, one of the area’s oldest and prettiest towns, it seems as if every second house has been given a thorough makeover.

And if the stonework is fascinating so too is the roofing. Like here, tiles are used extensively but tin (or long run, as many know it) is still hugely popular.

Interestingly, many of these tin roofs are painted red, often complementing red tinges in the rock or the commonly used red bricks.

There are many ways to help children learn about the wonders of nature, while having fun at the same time, as eastLife EastLife contributor, BARBARA Barbara WILLIAMS, Williams, explains:

Watching their plants grow and seeing their little garden patch become a haven for graceful butterflies will almost guarantee that youngsters love spending time outside. The following planting tips are designed to attract butterflies to the garden, which in turn, will attract kids away from TV and into the outdoors.

Host plants to attract caterpillars First, ensure there are a sufficient number of host plants to support caterpillar activity. Choosing the right plants is not only necessary for the success of a butterfly garden, but is a great opportunity to teach youngsters about metamorphosis and the butterfly life cycle. Because caterpillars are small and unable to travel far to find food, it’s a good idea to locate host plants near nectar-rich flowers that attract female butterflies. Keep in mind that caterpillars will eat the leaves of these plants.

While leaves that have been visibly affected by caterpillars aren’t the most aesthetically pleasing sight, those holes are proof that caterpillars are thriving. Looking for signs of caterpillar activity can also be an exciting process for youngsters. Alfalfa, clover, sunflowers, milkweed (or swan plants), hollyhock and nettle are all attractive to caterpillars, as are herbs, including dill and parsley. The leafy tops of carrots are a particular favourite of the black swallowtail.

nectar Nectar plants for adult butterflies Because adult butterflies feed on nectar of flowering plants, an ample supply of these is important. Butterflies are most active in mid to late summer, so plants that flower at this time are best suited to supporting them.

the most effective way to create a garden that will be filled with these showy creatures is to first learn about the types of butterfly to your area. Native flowering plants are generally the best choices, as the relationship between local plants and local butterflies is inherently symbiotic.

Plants such as butterfly bush and butterfly weed are named because of their appeal to butterflies. Zinnia, bergamot, bloodflower, daylily, black-eyed Susan, purple coneflower, heliotrope, tansy, garlic chives and blue cardinal flowers are also attractive to butterflies.

Helping your children to select and grow plants that will support caterpillars is important, but so too is creating a habitat suitable for butterflies. Insecticides will kill caterpillars feeding on affected leaves, so it’s best to avoid insecticides in a little one’s butterfly garden. Butterflies also need flat rocks for resting, orientation and

warming, and some coarse, wet sand to fill in puddles. Keep in mind that plants will need tending, a job that might be a bit too difficult for young children to manage on their own. To increase the odds of heavy butterfly population and allow greater observation of the butterfly life cycle, consider raising butterflies specifically for release in the garden after they’ve emerged from their cocoons. Butterfly kits are commercially available. Pizza ovens – hottest trends eastlife | landscaping

The latest trend to fire up homeowners is the wood fired pizza oven. Hot for landscaping and outdoor cooking, they come in a variety of rustic styles – indoor models too – however the idea is anything but new. In fact, it is positively medieval.

Wood fired ovens have been around almost from the dawn of civilisation – well, certainly from the Roman era and even today, it is Italy with which these efficient ‘cookers’ are associated. A number of well preserved, wood fired ovens have, in recent years, been unearthed in Pompeii, many thought to date back some 3000 years. Those excavated show a high level of engineering and craftmanship. Although other European countries also employed wood fired ovens, the Romans perfected the art of construction and those unearthed in Pompeii were found to be in remarkable condition, so good that with a few minor renovations, they could have been used for cooking again. Their excellent preservation was apparently due to the force of the volcanic eruption.

There are two types of wood fired ovens, ‘black’ ovens and ‘white’ ovens. The favoured ‘black’ ovens are heated by burning wood in a chamber and the food is cooked in that same chamber alongside the fire while it is still going, or cooked in the heated chamber after the fire and coals have been swept out. ‘White’ ovens are heated by heat transfer from a separate combustion chamber and flue-gas path, so the oven remains ‘white’, or clean from ash. While the traditional wood fired oven is a masonry unit, they can also

be built out of adobe, cob, or even cast iron. Although the prefabricated refractory pizza oven was created in Italy around the turn of the century, it really took off in the 1970s, with a renaissance of brick oven cooking.

Made from an assortment of bricks and ceramic materials which were well-shaped, insulated and vented, it appears that the larger, oversized ovens found were most likely built and owned by wealthy land owners who probably ‘rented’ them out to the local villagers. Even with the advent of electricity and gas, many Italians have continued to use wood fired ovens and many a Tuscan farmhouse has, or has had, an original pizza oven, some of which are still being used today. What’s more, many modern designs differ only

The next development in pizza oven design appeared in the 1990s, with the creation of modern refractory and high tech insulating materials. These reduced oven heat-up time from 2-3 hours to about 45 minutes and also featured excellent heat holding characteristics.

The final step came with the mainstream use of modern ceramic insulation, which made pizza oven installation faster, easier and less

expensive than ever. But, now, many homeowners are buying or building their own traditional wood fired pizza ovens using kitset or pre-assembled models. Some remain simple and in the style of the original ovens, other styles are more elaborate, adding to the ambience of landscaped courtyards whilst still providing a versatile cooking station. With their love of the outdoors, Kiwis are also embracing the rustic flavours of wood fired cooking and love to go Italiano-style when it comes to pizza. As a result, wood fired ovens are catching on especially with celebrity chefs, such as Jamie Oliver, promoting their use.

It often astounds me the number of people who make big financial decisions without a proper plan. My mentor constantly reminds me of the saying “failing to plan is planning to fail”.

For the past couple of months I have reported new record highs for the local median house price. Again, this month, from The REINZ statistics, we have a new record high of $691,000 (Eastern beaches -April) – up from the record of $675,000 for March, which was up from the record $668,000 for February and $636,000 in January.

Decisions which pertain to your money, your family and your life are important and need serious consideration. The Japanese culture is a fine example of this. The humiliation of failure through bad decisions has meant they have adopted a meticulous culture that ensures planning is a big part of their lives. I know us Kiwi folk all aspire to own, first a car, then our own home. And though it’s not easy at times, the end results can be priceless. Recent years have seen an unprecedented rise in Kiwis investing in stocks, property and financial institutions. As we know, this has also seen a lot of heartache with world markets crippling our little piece of paradise that we call New Zealand.

Sometimes the most arduous amount of planning can still come unstuck. Have a backup and a backup to backup your backup and don’t put all your eggs in one basket. In our business we have adopted the “failing to plan is planning to fail” motto and encourage clients to invest time into planning their renovation projects. The more homework done, the easier and safer it will be to protect your investment. Identify what you want to achieve. Write down your ideas. Use technology to research. Set a benchmark and make a timeline. Investment in planning will yield results. Let’s face it, no one wants the unpleasant shock of receiving an invoice way above their expectations. The number of sales for April (Eastern Beaches) was 217 – down from 258 in March but better than the 203 from February. This led me to research just how affordable housing is for the average person today. I like to keep things simple and after a lot of googling I found a very interesting calculator on the reserve bank website which served this purpose. Just as a measure I went back 30 years to the first quarter of 1983 and used $1 as a value. Thirty years on and that $1 equals $3.16 on the CPI, $3.60 for wages (great, an improvement), $3.11 for food (also an improvement), $2.39 for transport, $1.98 for clothing (thanks

China) but for housing $7.38. Quite a shock and a clear demonstration of how much harder it is for first home buyers to enter the market. More and more, we are finding that first home buyers need the assistance of parents, either with raising a deposit or as guarantors for mortgages, to help them onto the property ladder. Locally, competition for properties still remains strong with sales by auction still being prevalent. I have also heard from a couple of the local property rental managers that the numbers of properties available for rent has increased over the past month. If this trend were to continue, the flow on effect is typically that the investor buyer will be less likely to want to add to his or her portfolio allowing owner occupiers and first home buyers a better chance of securing their dream home. – Greg Roy AREINZ, Principal, Total Focus Property Ltd

When the new Mini Paceman was launched at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park recently, EastLife motoring correspondent, ALISTAIR DAVIDSON, attended the event and soon found his scepticism about its attributes was ill-founded. I’m easily confused, just ask my wife. That’s why it’s no surprise that I struggled to figure out how the allnew Paceman fitted into Mini’s bigger picture.

Eastlife had been invited to last month’s Paceman launch at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park. Not wanting to turn up looking like a complete plonker I visited the World Wide Web to learn more about this seventh addition to the local Mini range.

We also discovered that Enzed would only get a front-drive Cooper S variant (no all-wheel drive, which was a pity as it was hosing down outside) with a 135kW/240Nm 1.6-litre twin scroll turbocharged engine. That 240Nm torque figure increases to 260Nm on overboost.

Hmmmm. It looks a bit like a Mini Hatch, has three doors and appears to be about the same size. So what’s the point? No doubt BMW NZ, the local Mini importer and distributor, would make it all abundantly clear at launch.

The Paceman is targeting blokes (historically Mini appeals more to the fairer sex) who want a Mini that’s bigger than your garden variety three-door Hatch, don’t want a SUV, and like a bit of excitement in their lives.

At a wet and windy Hampton Downs I learned that the Paceman is based on the Countryman (the bigger all-wheel drive four-door Mini launched in 2011)

It all made perfect sense, except perhaps for the lack of all-wheel drive, but Mini’s marketing gurus assured us they are evaluating it.

With all the technical stuff out of the way it was time to brave the storm and do what we were all there for: hot laps around a race track. But first, we got to play on the motor sport park’s super slick skid pan in an all-wheel drive Countryman and a two-wheel drive Cooper S roadster.
