Off to great start Hi everyone,

Crowned Miss Universe 1983, after winning the Miss New Zealand title, Lorraine Downes will be remembered by many locals as the beautiful Pakuranga teenager who made history with her pageant wins. After a modelling career she eluded the celebrity limelight for many years. Then, in 2006, Lorraine re-emerged and won the NZ version of TV reality show, Dancing with the Stars. I cannot express just how thrilled I am by the response to our first EastLife magazine which hit the streets early in April. It was so successful we have added a further eight pages to the May issue and again it is packed with great competitions, a wide range of articles to suit various tastes plus the latest on new products, fashion collections, cosmetic releases and more. Finally, as we enter the last phase of autumn, I am sure most readers are making the most of still warm temperatures even though long overdue April showers swept in to give gardens and farmland a drenching. That said, I do hope we are in for a mild winter and a chance to make the most of new season fashion looks – such great colours it would be a shame not to show them off around the town.

by Highland Park Shopping Centre at French restaurant La Casserole in the heart of the complex. Having dined there earlier in the year and thoroughly enjoyed the French-style menu, I was both surprised and delighted with the sumptuous array of finger food prepared and served to our guests. Everyone was talking about the eclectic and appetising mix of Asian and European fare. The restaurant’s talented crew certainly did us proud.

Saluting our Anzacs A proud, supportive and respectful crowd turned out for the ANZAC Day parade and civic service held mid morning at Stockade Hill in Howick. Representatives from a large number of community groups and organisations, together with the public, supported Howick RSA members in remembering those who fell at Gallipoli during the First World War and honouring all servicemen and women who died at or returned from the two world wars and other conflicts. Ten questions in ten minutes

Crowned Miss Universe 1983, after winning the Miss New Zealand title, Lorraine Downes will be remembered by many locals as the beautiful Pakuranga teenager who made history with her pageant wins. After a modelling career she eluded the celebrity limelight for many years. Then, in 2006, Lorraine re-emerged and won the NZ version of TV reality show, Dancing with the Stars. Now married to former Black Caps captain, Martin Crowe, EastLife caught up with the girl from Pakuranga.

As an image consultant, who is also a former Miss NZ and Miss Universe, do people have unreal or extremely high expectations of the advice you give them?

I was very blessed to grow up in a close, loving family. My memories of living in Pakuranga are great – school, friends, sporting activities. I always felt safe and life was relaxed.

Obviously, clients make contact with me because they want advice on their image so our relationship begins with them trusting me and my advice. I have been an image consultant since the 80’s and understand how clients feel throughout this magic process. Naturally, clients want a positive result; they trust me, and I don’t think I’ve ever had an unsatisfied client. If I felt a client expected something I couldn’t deliver, I would be honest and tell them I couldn’t help.

Next year you turn 50 what are your thoughts about reaching that milestone and your expectations of the future?

Would you encourage young women to participate in a NZ beauty pageant today? Personally, I think pageants are outdated. When I competed in them, they were the thing to do, especially if you wanted a modelling career. But today, if young women want to be models they can enter modelling competitions. However, in saying that, pageants can be fun; a way to develop confidence in performing on stage, and a way to travel if you go on to an international contest. Did you enjoy/participate in ballroom dancing before Dancing with the Stars and if not did your success inspire a desire to dance more often, if only on a social basis? I had never done any ballroom dancing before DWTS. However, prior to the show, I had been taking Argentinean Tango lessons in Wellington as a social hobby but that’s very different to ballroom tango. I absolutely love Argentinean Tango and don’t dance it nearly enough. It’s on my to do list again! How did growing up in Pakuranga influence your outlook on life if at all? www.eastlife.co.nz

Honestly, next year is just another birthday, I feel like I am the age I should be. Yes, I was born in 1964, so that makes me 50, no big deal. But when you say 50, it does bring a couple of things to mind. My Dad died at 54 and that was way too young, and if I live to say, 75, that means I only have 25 more years on earth, and that’s not a lot! As for my expectations of the future – through life experiences, I am learning to live in the now; it’s a good way to live. You really treasure what you have and who is in your life, and not worry about the future. What’s your favourite sporting or leisure activity and after such strong associations with both rugby and cricket do you ever tire of them? This is kind of embarrassing. People think that I am interested in rugby and cricket but this is so far from the truth! I have no real interest in either, never have, never will. I love watching the Australian Open and Wimbledon, so it’s tennis for me. My daughter is also a passionate ballet, contemporary, and jazz dancer, so dance is my absolute favourite sporting activity to watch. And what do I like to do? I love walking amongst nature (beach or bush), yoga and when I have more time, dancing Argentinean Tango! Tell us one thing about you that is little known to the general public? Because of my past as a beauty queen/model, people think that I lead a glamorous life but I don’t. I am

a down to earth person who loves family, nature and being around both of those things, not the public, jetsetting lifestyle. My favourite clothes are jeans, t-shirts and flat shoes, not ballgowns and high heels. What’s the first thing you would do if you became Prime Minister? I would put into primary schools, a syllabus teaching children to connect with their inner being; to learn to love who they are, to know that they are special and unique. Our children are our future, and if we can teach children the power of positive thinking from a young age, self esteem will help them develop into

positive and peaceful people who know how to treat others with love and respect. If you were stranded on a desert island, what item would you most like to have with you? My ipod with my favourite music. If you could invite three people to dinner – dead or alive – who would you ask? The hopes and dreams of

Brendan Donovan

Over Easter weekend, Kiwi film, The Hopes and Dreams of Gazza Snell, took to the small screen for the first time. But, since the film made its cinema debut in 2011, what has become of the man behind the pictures? EastLife reporter, JON RAWLINSON went in search of a few answers.

Written and directed by former Howickian, Brendan Donovan, ‘Gazza Snell’ depicts a local family coping with the trauma of a severe injury to its youngest child, set amidst the backdrop of many familiar Howick landmarks. In fact, the Snell family lived on Pickwick Parade, the very same street where I grew up! Since the film’s release, Brendan has been busy fostering the ‘hopes and dreams’ of a new generation, teaching drama direction to postgraduate and masters students at Auckland University’s film school; but he hasn’t let movie-making slide either! “If you’re teaching, you’re learning – that’s one of the greatest things about it,” Brendan says, “I’m working with very small classes of committed students and it’s great being able to help them express themselves through film. We have some fine storytellers among us, and, in general, New Zealanders want to see their stories on screen.” Brendan says helping to develop the talents of young Kiwi film-makers has been very rewarding.

We can’t just watch American and British shows; we’ll start to have an identity crisis!” Brendan began teaching at the university last year. However, he is still pursuing other film-making projects.

Brendan Donovan – loves to movie it. “The teaching is part time, so I’m still writing and directing,” he says. “I currently have several feature films in private and publicly funded development. “The NZ Film Commission has funded, Blue Smoke, for development, a script originated by former New Zealand Prime Minister and current US ambassador, Mike Moore. “I’m the writer on this project, which is about Maori entertainers in Sydney in the ’60s and ’70s. I have also been funded by NZ on Air and TVNZ to develop an original TV drama series, but that’s early days yet.”

Brendan says identity is crucial to the development of local stories, his own stories having been influenced by his East Auckland upbringing. “I had a pretty happy childhood out East, and when you’re happy, you can imagine great things. I did a lot of imagining on the beaches, in the bush and out on the gulf. It set me up to use my imagination to fund my life, which is truly satisfying for a creative person.” While the glitz and glamour of the film industry abroad may be a draw for many an aspiring film-maker, Brendan says he still calls New Zealand home. www.eastlife.co.nz

Every bug has this Thorne Van Gogh painted sunflowers, Constable, the English countryside and Picasso, well, who knows what he painted! But one Auckland artist enjoys the beauty of the basest of nature’s offerings, as JON RAWLINSON discovered. It’s a bug’s life for Jane Thorne, who says she appreciates nature’s most diminutive creatures and paints them in intricate detail. “I’m fascinated by insects because they’re essential to the world, yet often overlooked,” she says. Aucklanders may have seen Jane’s works in galleries throughout Auckland, but she says exhibitions out east have always held special appeal. “My paintings have been well received in east Auckland and I’ve sold quite a few to people there. My first exhibition was at Pakuranga Community and Cultural Centre and I’ve enjoyed exhibiting at Uxbridge; it’s a wonderful gallery that’s made a great name for itself. If asked to go back I’d definitely say, yes!” Most recently, Jane exhibited at Railway Street Studios in Newmarket. “It was my first solo exhibition and generated a lot of interest. There’s nothing like having a show with all your own work.” Entitled Origin of Species, it featured many creepy-crawlies, which Jane says offer more a visual than a scientific attraction to her. “Real bugs actually freak me out! Like insects, my paintings have evolved, but they’re not really about evolution. I just love [Charles] Darwin’s obsession with collecting, which has become my obsession; collecting images of bugs and painting them over and over again. “I like to be accurate in my depictions, and love learning what my bugs are and where they come from, particularly more exotic species found in museums. They have bugs from all around the world, with loads of brilliant colours and strange shapes.”

“The other artists here at Dornwell Studios are probably my closest influences. I love looking at the works of others and I’m really into Nigel Brown’s work. It has a genuine kiwiana feel. Because I paint some New Zealand bugs, my work is ‘Kiwi’ in a way; wetas, for example, you’re unlikely to see those in the works of overseas painters!” Jane’s paintings sell for $120, through to a few thousand for larger works. “My paintings are quite affordable, considering the amount of work I put in. However, I’d rather have them out there in people’s homes, than locked away as investments. “I understand people buy art as investments, but that doesn’t influence how or what I create. I paint for me first of all, which is true of most artists. That’s what makes art attractive and valuable, because it represents the originality and passion of the artist.” Jane will next exhibit at a group show at Railway Street Studios in Newmarket, from August 30.

No ‘Toms’, Dick or Harry all year round under harsh conditions to limit the yield and produce an intense flavour. These are picked as ripe as possible just before market day.

Listening to Anthony Tringham talk about the love of his life is enough to make you blush as red as a tomato. Ironically, it is this very fruit that is the object of the bespectacled farmer’s affections and one of the loves of his life. NATALIE BRITTAN visited Clevedon Farmers’ Market to unearth the secrets of this specialty tomato grower. Anthony Tringham and his family are regulars at the market going by the name of Curious Croppers – “growers of cranky but gorgeous vegetables”. But more curious are the names and personalities of the fruits of their labour including the Little Horrors, Spanish Red, Spanish Green, and Little Miss Sunshine. What’s more, they all have personalities to match. Spanish Green is described as the slightly bitchy cousin of Spanish Red. “The female ones are a little bit crazy and fickle,” Anthony says. On the Curious Croppers website, “she” is described as: “tart, edgy and sexy as hell. She will steal your boyfriend and then dump him. Fun at parties good in small doses, and not the marrying kind” – clearly not Anthony’s wife, Angela, then. “She married me because of my good looks and my charm, and stayed for the tomatoes!” Anthony jokes. But way before the markets began, Anthony worked the family farm.

The Curious Croppers use bio-controls such as parasitic wasps and ladybirds to keep the pests under control, and they use only the gentlest of sprays.

“Anthony was always the tomato grower – he was the one who went to Lincoln University,” Angela says.

But the big bonus is the way Anthony feels about each fruit. “They’re sexy and beautiful. Everyone needs them every day. Isn’t the tomato called the fruit of love? They’re beautiful and they’re fun. I love them all!”

They both agree it was Clevedon Market founder, Helen Dorresteyn, who “nagged” them to become part of the market four years ago. Since their debut, the Tringhams have expanded their range and their clientele. Chefs from top city restaurants such as The Grill, Depot and Euro are fans of the Curious Croppers formula.

However, tomatoes cannot grow on love alone. Blackbirds often devour the ripe tomatoes which means they have to be picked early.

Living city-side, the Tringhams commute to the country to work on their tomato farm near the market.

In spite of the blackbirds, the Curious Croppers continue to expand their range with additions such as tomatillos and the rainbow tomato.

As another market ends, the Tringhams marvel at their sales. “When we started here it was a bit dull,” they say. “Then we expanded and now it’s fun, it really is exciting.”

Marquesas magic Emeritus Professor Peter Oettli has in his bookshelf a small volume about the Marquesas Islands. It is a description of this remote part of French Polynesia as well as a guide for tourists but, as he explains, it is the dedication inside that makes it special. ‘To Peter. Come back again. Maururu roa, Vai.’ These warm words, handwritten next to a photograph of a Marquesan beauty standing beside a large, ancient stone tiki hold special memories.

Until 1987, the supply ship anchored offshore and its cargo was shifted by whaleboat. But in March of that year, Captain Théodore Oputu decided that with care and seamanship it was possible to enter the bay.

Vaihere gave me her autograph when I visited the Marquesas on the Aranui III as tour leader of a Calder & Lawson tour.

He anchored just inside the entrance and then, with cables attached to the cliffs by his intrepid Marquesan sailors, swung the ship around 180 degrees. The whaleboats were able to transfer both cargo and passengers in calm water to the wharf.

The ship took both supplies and passengers to the islands from Tahiti and Vai was one of the multilingual team of guides on board. A couple of years later I returned to these enchanted islands, 1500 km northeast of Tahiti, and I am still under their spell. But don’t imagine low-lying atolls with placid palm-fringed lagoons. Think craggy cliffs rising out of the deep sea, or steep pinnacles of basaltic rock, some of them up to 1000 metres high, forming a backdrop to villages nestled in shady valleys or coastal bays. I was up early on the day we entered Vaipaee Bay on Ua Huka in the Marquesas Group. The bay was only marginally wider than the length of our ship.

Now, more than 20 years later, we repeated the difficult and daring manoeuvre, the Marquesan captain ‘ice-cool’, while excited passengers walked forward and aft on the sidedecks, thrilled by the spectacle. Other spectators included a number of wild goats and horses which watched us from the high, barren cliffs – barren because these introduced animals had destroyed most of the native vegetation of the island. In fact, there are more wild horses and goats than humans – the population of Ua Huka is approximately 570. On the day we visited, the programme had us travelling in a convoy of fourwheel drive vehicles from the wharf to a mayoral reception in the grounds of

the museum. This was to be followed by a visit to an arboretum designed to restore the former lush vegetation of the island. On landing we were told to look for vehicles decorated with flowers. I ended up in the front seat of one flower-bedecked Land Rover. Our driver was an attractive young woman wearing (post-missionary!) traditional dress. Fortunately I speak some French so we exchanged a few pleasantries on the way to the museum. Like almost every occasion in the Marquesas, the mayoral reception involved a dance display. To my surprise, our driver was one of the dancers, extending a graceful

welcome to the small realm we were visiting. After viewing the beautiful arboretum, we carried on to a lunch of roasted goat at the coastal village of Hane. On the road again... Growing up in Auckland during the 1950’s EastLife editor, HELEN PERRY was part of that golden era when, come summer, many families packed up all their cares and woes and headed an hour north to the bach, tent or caravan site at Orewa. Modern infrastructure means the seaside town of Orewa is almost a suburb of Auckland and most of the basic baches from my youth are long gone. So, when offered a weekend away in an Oxford 65 caravan, I decided Raglan was the place for me to recapture the halcyon days of my youth. Many old timers will remember the iconic Oxford of yesteryear – there were hundreds trundling around the countryside, offering their owners comfortable, but compact living for family holidays. However, as technology, materials and wages, advanced at a rapid rate, the Oxford disappeared, replaced by bigger, swankier models with all the luxuries. That is until 2011 when Motek resurrected and rejuvenated the Oxford. I first discovered the new, reconfigured Oxford 55 and 65 at the Covi Motorhome, Caravan and Outdoor Show in Auckland and was delighted to see the former classic back with a modern twist. Then, out of the blue, some two years later, came the chance to take one away for a weekend, hence the idea of Raglan by the sea and a weekend escape with my sister-in-law.

Though I’m ashamed to say this was my first visit to the coastal Waikato town, I’m happy to report, Raglan completely charmed me. I fell in love with the scenery, the people, the great shopping and the cafes.

While sister-in-law and I have no qualms about sharing a queen-size bed, the double here looked a little snug for anyone other than partners so she took the bedroom and I, the single bed in the living area. And for someone who is a poor sleeper, I slept like a log.

The good man in my life volunteered to tow the van to Raglan (a tow rating of over two tonne meant we needed his vehicle). Once we were settled at the pristine and superbly run Raglan Kopua Holiday Park, he departed and we two set about enjoying ourselves.

The shower was extremely roomy, the hand basin adequate (good shelving in the bathroom) and I think the nifty loo does the job – not keen to do a clean-up job for just a couple of days away, we used the camp bathroom just a step from our site.

Despite mistaking the microwave for the TV (no glasses again) there wasn’t much my scrutiny of this compact form of living missed.

On this occasion we gave serious cooking a miss – just too much to tempt us into town. However, we did use the toaster and jug for breakfast. We also loved the security of being next to neighbours who were up for a chat and a rescue mission (see story

On the other hand, I’m not so sure if I would want to be constantly on the road even though our van was easy to tow. I like the idea of heading to a campground come next Christmas and bunking down for a month. Alternatively, a permanent site would be really great. And for me, it’s Raglan. With its glorious sea views and rural scenery, amazing beaches, bustling community and excellent amenities, it offers a lot; a site there, just 90 minutes from Bombay, has endless appeal. If it weren’t for my Oxford where would I be? I’d be in the hospital or inďŹ infirmary‌ So you don’t think so? Perhaps you’re even smiling at the thought. Well, let me tell you about my wonderful caravanning weekend, which had sister-in-law and I laughing most of the time. I might even have ended up in the hospital if one little incident hadn’t been resolved before I faced doing a Fosbury Flop out the window! But let me start at the beginning, which wasn’t great; not when my three and a half minute dash to pick up a book for ‘escape’ reading cost me a total $158.99. Just $8.99 for the novel; $150 for the parking ticket. Of course, you won’t have an ounce of sympathy for me because I was illegally parked. In a disability space. But I still felt marginally aggrieved. Like a dozen other cars I had double parked for several minutes waiting on a space to come clear. I twice circuited Pakuranga Plaza’s Aylesbury St hoping for that elusive park. Suddenly, two cars pulled out together and I swung into a space

then, on climbing out, saw it was a wheelchair park. I did hesitate, but the other park was free so I ran the two doors to Paper Plus grabbed my book and dashed back – three and a half minutes. Other space still clear but too late! OfďŹ Officer Do it Right was on the job with ticket in hand. Guilty as charged and a very sad $150 start to my weekend. Needless to say, this put me in quite a  flap resulting in me forgetting to grab my camera and leaving behind my pack with anti-perspirant, cleanser, hair brush and  flannel. Luckily, soap, toothbrush and paste were in another pack. But did the disasters end there? Not at all. Panicking about how late I was – caravan-towing husband was at least 90 minutes ahead of me (or so I thought), the plan being to meet in Ngaruawahia.

Finally, we were on our way. Thank goodness when husband rang 40 minutes later he was only just ahead of us, he too had been delayed by more than an hour. Well I’ve said a lot and we’re not even at Raglan yet. The rest of our weekend involved locking ourselves inside the caravan with no way out other than the window – just don’t ask; I have no idea how we did that. Thankfully, after a lot of yoo-hooing, the neighbour heard us and I didn’t have to employ a  flip- ip-flop out the window which I just know would have ended in a broken leg or, at the very least, a bent toe (and the inďŹ infirmary for sure). During the next two days I lost my car keys in town and found them again after traipsing to and fro between several destinations. I also discovered my book – the $158.99 book – was teenage reading and sci-ďŹ sci-fi to boot. Who would have thought it, Blood Ransom sounded like a good thriller to me. But that’s what comes from not having glasses when choosing!

On the motorway at last and then, oopsy, I missed the off ramp to pick up sister-in-law and had to travel in heavy southbound trafďŹ traffic a further two kilometres before I could turn around and head back.

And last but not least, the bottle of wine we intended for a night of merriment before hitting the sack was corked! And, you guessed it, we didn’t have a corkscrew!

Made the turn but then another error had me heading for Cavendish Drive rather than Roscommon Road.

Bucklands Beach has been thrust into the art and historic limelight at one of Auckland’s most revered landmarks, Highwic in Newmarket, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.

Once the home of the prominent Buckland family, the historic home has on display paintings and sketches depicting early scenes of Auckland, with Bucklands Beach taking precedence.

“For the extended Buckland family, summers at Bucklands Beach were a time to get together, relax, have fun and enjoy the beautiful land and seascape, which Colonel Morrow captured so well in his paintings and sketches,” says Cheryl.

Produced by Colonel Arthur Morrow, these works shed light on the life of the Buckland family and their outings to the coastal area on the Tamaki Peninsula. “Colonel Morrow was the son-in-law of Alfred Buckland – the original owner of Highwic,” says Highwic manager, Cheryl Laurie. In addition to their Highwic mansion, the Buckland family owned 141

The family – including Morrow – spent many summer months there horse riding, picnicking and swimming.

However, the trip from Newmarket to Bucklands Beach was not so easy. “The family would leave Highwic early in the morning, driving through Remuera in cabs drawn by teams of four horses. The trip by carriage on rough, gravel roads took five hours one way; an extraordinary length of time for a comparatively short distance, even by today’s standards of legendary traffic snarl-ups.”

An intriguing personality, Colonel Morrow was a military man through and through, yet highly artistic. A crack shot with a rifle, he won several prestigious awards for his target shooting, and had a distinguished military career in New Zealand serving in the Waikato War. He also had an abiding interest and passion for the country’s flora and fauna, as well as art. He passed away in 1937 at the age of 94 and his wife, Mariamne – the third daughter of Alfred Buckland – died in 1957 at the age of 102. “The Morrow collection is an important part of the Highwic story – and an important collection of NZ art in its own right,” says Cheryl. Inspired in Howick “Stimulating!� That’s how painter John Horton describes his art. “It evokes memories of places visited or encourages people to get out and enjoy our beautiful country,� he adds. Speaking from his home in Whitford, John continues to tell how living in Howick inspires him. “Being a coastal town, it provides plenty of artistic inspirations with its many tidal beaches and estuaries. Plenty of rural scenes toward the Whitford area. The town streets also provide good colourful scenes.� “I would describe my art as Artistic Representational which means capturing realistic images in a loose artistic technique. My preferred medium is oil which is utilised in a ‘wet on wet’ technique. It has taken a bit of time to perfect.�

Painting for more than 35 years, John has exhibited regularly at galleries in Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, Napier and Christchurch. He also takes time to share his talents,

conducting demonstrations and workshops for various Auckland art groups and was a tutor for evening classes at Pakuranga College.

He is a recipient of numerous awards and prizes from the Australian Artist magazine, New Zealand Fellowship of Artists, Franklin Arts Festival, Auckland Easter Show, and North Shore Art Awards. Further explaining why he paints: “I love the New Zealand scenery. It is so attractive and colourful to capture in paint. For a long time I resisted the urgings of friends to meet Nancy and join her circle of friends. Her strait laced demeanour never really appealed. However, with everyone sounding her virtues, especially when it came to looking a million dollars, I began to seriously consider what her friendship would mean. Finally, when faced with a special function and despairing of what to wear, I thought I should give this pushy Miss Ganz the benefit of the doubt and see what support she could offer. Well, from day one, getting to know her has been a struggle. She has pushed and poked at my figure faults and is seemingly determined to whip me into shape. Even when every fibre of my body is struggling against her ardent attempts to pull me in a new direction, she remains staunch – I will be her friend whether I like it or not and she will make me look a million dollars. Well, together, we haven’t yet achieved the million dollar look and while each encounter is hard work, and sometimes involves rough and tumble, I have to concede Nancy has made a big difference to my life.

Meet the real Nancy Ganz or one of her many undergarment personas. We don’t meet that often and when we do, I head out the door feeling in control if a little up-tight. I am now part of her circle of friends and find myself urging others of slightly rotund proportions to come and meet the amazing Nancy Ganz. Some days you’ll love her; some days you’ll hate her but she will do wonders for your figure and just when you need it most. You’ve probably realised the week I mentioned started with Nancy in tow. Her strict dressing guidelines can still make me grumpy and it’s always a mission to ensure we are on the same plane, especially as she is a little smaller than me. But I’ve warmed to her ways and have come to appreciate the wholehearted support of the wonderful Nancy Ganz!

Keep winter GINNY MCARTHUR – Outlook for Life. Ginny is not only a nutritionalist and personal trainer but also a marathon runner and regular on Newstalk ZB.

Personally, I think our primal hibernation instinct kicks in, telling us to eat more and move less in order to survive the winter. Yes, it is cold and dark but don your coat and hat, grab a friend, a high visibility vest and a torch and get out and train. If you really can’t face the outdoors, hire a bike or treadmill or join the gym. At Outlook we train outside right through winter and I think we only got wet twice last year! Exercising first thing in the morning helps you feel better for the whole day. Most colds are caught indoors in air-conditioned rooms not outside

in the fresh air. The fitter you are the better you are able to fight off colds and flu. Setting a fitness goal in winter helps to keep your Mojo and provides something to get out and train for. Of course, when we are sick during winter, we exercise less. Some research also shows that glucose receptors on fat cells enlarge when we have a cold, helping us to gain weight – good old survival mechanism again! Seasonal affective disorder or the “sads” can trick us into eating too many serotonin producing carbohydrates to help us feel better. In some studies women have eaten an extra 800 cals of comfort food a day in the form of rice, potatoes, pasta and bread. That’s potentially a 10kg weight gain over three months!

Insulate homes to save heating dollars and calories. Whilst you might burn calories keeping warm in a draughty house, research shows we tend to eat more when we feel cold. Aim to eat nutrient-dense, satisfying foods. For breakfast try porridge or other high fibre, hot cereals such as Weetbix or All Bran with hot milk. Add a sprinkle of slivered almonds and a dollop of Greek yoghurt for extra protein or go for eggs and baked beans on wholegrain toast; use grilled mushrooms and tomatoes too. Natural peanut butter with a banana on grainy toast is another favourite. Try toasted pita pockets with veggie soup for lunch, or what about a baked/microwaved kumara filled with cottage cheese, chilli beans, baked beans or leftovers?

With so many warming and healthy soups, stews and casseroles available, there is no excuse for eating badly through winter. Make the slow cooker your best friend. Add chickpeas, lentils, beans and pulses. Great winter veggies such as cauliflower, broccoli, leeks, onions, carrots, cabbage can bulk up meals with fibre and cancer-fighting phytochemicals. Just because salads don’t appeal there is no excuse not to eat your four handfuls of veggies in a day. Wonderful soups, ratatouille, moussaka, and chicken pies, curries, lasagnes and pizzas can all be served in healthy options. Stay healthy and well and avoid winter weight gain with natural antioxidants and exercise then you’ll keep your Mojo.

Skin care through the ages Most people like to think they take “reasonable” care of their skin but how many have been guilty of going to bed with the day’s makeup still on or spending a day out with no sun protection? Keeping skin healthy and looking fabulous involves a bit of work. In addition to a regular beauty routine (rather than a slap-dash regime) our skin can benefit from various treatments but, as we age, it’s important to choose the right one to suit our skin’s particular needs. Nothing reflects the movement of time as much as our skin. Here is an overview of a woman’s skin needs through the ages: • Teenagers: Hormones surge through the body causing changes to moods and skin; the onset of more oil production can trigger acne and unsightly breakouts. Medicated clearing facials will help

blemishes, remove blackheads, balance oil production and reduce inflammation. This is a critical time to reinforce the dangers that can result from exposure to UVA and UVB rays. Learning about skin at an early age will benefit youth for life. • Twenties to Thirties: At this time the ageing process starts to reveal itself in the first really visible signs. Small amounts of collagen and elastin start to break down and the skin’s natural hydration, known as hyaluronic acid, decreases. Therefore, it is vital to look at products that are suited to you and treatments customised for your skin. Best anti-ageing product at this age is a quality sun protection with additional antioxidants, multivitamins and anti inflammatory ingredients such as green tea and liquorice. • Thirties to Forties: If you haven’t yet done so, this is the prime time to invest in an anti-ageing eye product. • 800g Ikana Live Greenshell™ Mussels • 6 eggs • 1 cup self-raising flour • 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce • 100g feta cheese • Small bunch coriander

Place Ikana Live Greenshell ™ Mussels in pot with a small amount of water plus the juice from the pack.

Beat eggs, add flour, chilli sauce, feta cheese and coriander and mix to form a smooth batter. Add the chopped Ikana Mussels and mix in.

rlic a G roast lamb cutlets Ajay Zalte – executive chef, Novotel Auckland International Airport. Ajay is a Pakuranga resident and has worked in leading hotels and first class restaurants worldwide.

Ingredients:

• 12 cloves garlic, peeled • 6 x 170 grams Agria or roasting potatoes, sliced • Four small zucchinis, halved lengthwise • One tbsp rosemary leaves • Two tbsp olive oil • Sea salt and cracked black pepper • Eight double lamb cutlets, trimmed

Preheat the oven to 220°C. Place garlic, potatoes, zucchini, rosemary, oil, salt and pepper in baking dish, toss to combine and roast for 25 minutes. While vegetables are cooking, heat a frying pan over high heat and brown the lamb on all sides.

Mustard mint sauce • One and a half cups chopped mint leaves • One and a half tbsp seeded mustard • Two and a half tbsp honey

To make mustard mint sauce, place mint, mustard and honey in a bowl and mix to combine.

Serves four

Place lamb on top of the vegetables. Brush lamb with some of the mint sauce and roast for a further 8-10

minutes or until lamb is pink (medium done) and potatoes are soft. To serve, place the lamb and vegetables on serving plates and top with the remaining mint sauce. Serve hot, garnished with rosemary.

Dining at the historic Harbour View Hotel conjured up a charming picture of yesteryear.

Cafe scene big bait Go south, young man, may be a phrase EastLifers don’t really want to hear but recently HELEN PERRY discovered that Raglan was rich in glad eating places wooing foodies to this seaside region. Since sampling four eateries while visiting the coastal township of Raglan I have been ‘ragging’ a few cafe owner friends about the competition in another ‘village by the sea.’ Over two and a half days, everywhere we went, venues were pretty well packed out for lunch and dinner proving that at least this rural township isn’t short on chefs who can surf culinary ‘gnarlies’. We started on Friday night at Banteay Srey Khmer, a laid back café which has taken its name from a 10th Century Hindu temple in the Angkor region of Cambodia. The atmosphere bustled. Our friendly waitress was helpful and the simple menu reasonably priced. Once tasted, our dishes, with a element of Thai, went beyond the average mark. We shared entrees of beef satay (a little leathery) and probably the best crispy fried calamari I’ve tasted in some time. These big fat balls were coated with chilli sauce but it was the inner calamari that impressed; perfectly tender, it was melt in the mouth quality and ever so moreish. At $8 this dish was a winner. Afterwards, though tempted by a more traditional Cambodian curry, we finally settled for Pad Thai with prawns – tasty and flavoursome without being extraordinary. In all the www.eastlife.co.nz

fare here was nicely prepared and presented and our bill, including four glasses of wine, (we were walking) was under $65. On a perfect, sun-drenched day two, we lunched on the deck of Orca Bar and Restaurant with its lovely view of the inner harbour. Eating latish in the day and already booked elsewhere for dinner we opted for local Ruapuke sourdough bread with dips plus tea for two. Great bread, tangy, lemon-infused olive oil and generous bowls of hummus and dukkah – we were well satisfied. I decided this was a place (and a menu) to revisit. Cost for us was just $15.50. The prospect of eating in at the Harbour View Hotel had me positively excited. We had failed to secure a table the previous evening – packed to the gunnels – so booked for the Saturday night. Did I ever love the ambience, décor and old world charm of this beautiful building, the third on the site and built in 1905. Outside, patrons lined the verandah, many chatting to passersby. Someone strummed a guitar and sang. Inside, the dining room featured loads of timber, beautiful leadlights, brick fireplace, elegant drapes and a

sense of intimacy that made us loathe to leave. We both opted for fish of the day – pan-fried gurnard accompanied by a stuffed baked potato topped with cheese and a stir fry of capsicum and courgettes – just what this lady was longing for; fresh fish (REALLY fresh) with the lingering tang of sea salt! It was more than enough but could we look past the desserts? Simple answer, NO! My blueberry/apple crumble would have challenged many a city venue; full marks for presentation and a berry delicious crumble with gourmet ice cream. Sister-in-law’s chocolate tart with Grand Marnier did the trick for her. A lot better than your usual pub grub, we found nothing much to criticise here. Our last supper in Franklin was lunch at the Marlin Cafe at the wharf and boat ramp. Water’s edge stuff, the log cabin style was immensely appealing. We relaxed on the deck and ordered what turned out to be a gigantic platter of wedges with real bacon, cheese and sour cream of which we only managed half. Base price was $11.50 with $1.50 per extra and yet again warm service, inexpensive wine by the glass and another setting to die for.

The eastern corner of Auckland is home to several idyllic suburbs where living is easy but for an entrepreneur keen to escape the daily rat race of driving to the city then, perhaps, this Queenstown opportunity could be a significant turning point. Historic Gantleys building at Arthur’s Point, just out of Queenstown, site for one of New Zealand’s best known restaurants and the original home of Queenstown’s first policeman, went on the market last month.

Most people tend to change their decor about every 10 years opting for new paint or wallpaper and replacing furniture, soft furnishings and accessories. On coming up with her own take on these clever creations, Colleen Pengelly put her best foot forward and planted it firmly against the butt of other gardeners with similar ideas.

I saw some boot planters at a market and thought, ‘I can do much better than that’. So I went home, drummed up some old work boots from friends and started experimenting.�

The Howick resident says boots and shoes have long been used to pot plants but she has tried to create fun, funky planters that will add some kick to garden landscapes. And she has! “It started about two years ago when

In a secluded corner of the garden, I came upon our hardy fig tree laden with pendulous purple fruit glistening in the sun; a captivating configuration, like dazzling decorations on a Christmas tree. After gorging myself silly, I decided with such an abundance of fruit, to share my sweet bounty with friends and family. And maybe impress them with a little chutney or jam. Back indoors I searched for fig recipes online and was overwhelmed with all manner of facts and figures relating to this ancient fruit, which is actually the flower of the tree. The fascinating fig (Genus Ficus) has its botanical origins in western Asia, dating back more than 4000 years. It subsequently spread throughout the Mediterranean and beyond, thanks to ‘olde worlde’ colonisers and traders.

After learning all about figs, I was off to the neighbours, armed with a bulging basket, new-found knowledge and figgy fables aplenty! Three hours later I returned from my trade mission, a little worse for wear, having bravely battled a neighbour’s guard duck for entry to their property!

Minus the figs I proudly bore free range eggs, rhubarb and a smidgen of gossip; well, it does take time to negotiate a fair deal, I tell hubby, who replies: “Are you for real or a ‘figment’ of my imagination?”

That night, we dined al fresco on eggs Benedict, followed by fig and rhubarb crumble, complete with a cheeseboard and fig chutney. My intentions to clear out the wardrobe and stack firewood had ‘gone up in smoke’, but my day had been all the richer, inspired by time spent lingering beneath the boughs of our fig tree.

But there is nothing quite like sampling those sweet dew-dropped figs at first light, especially when gathered alone in my own Garden of Eden.

Taking the next big step So it’s time to take the next big step with your partner. That might mean getting married, but it might just mean moving in together. First, think about your assets; now think about your partner’s assets. Are they roughly equal? If they are, and you’re prepared to share with your partner everything you own now, and might earn in the future, then it’s not too much of a worry. However, if entering into the relationship with assets already in your own name you may wish

I don’t think I have ever been as excited to be in the building industry as I am now.

When I left school back in 1981 the country was in the midst of the great divide, with apartheid and sport at the forefront, along with a culture of beer drinking. Hard working tradesmen filled our pubs and building sites. Introducing young apprentices to jugs of Lion Red was a common initiation into the trade.

Nowadays builders must be licensed, be prepared to take ownership of their work and be proud of it. Our apprentices are the new breed being taught to incorporate these values into their every working day.

Last month I spoke about the movement in median house prices since mid 2007 in the Eastern Beaches area and how a new record had been set in February 2013 at $668,000.
