What a month October was, by the time this edition hits the streets I am hopeful we will have a decision made on who is going to govern us. But it wouldn’t ’’t surprise me if we still do not. Enough said, little snippets of Summer are here, tantalisingly close, then as quickly as they come they are gone. With longer days we should now see more of the sun, weekends in the garden, days at the beach, time outdoors - even the mere thought brings a smile for most of us. Enjoy those days until next month. Take care

Well, the good folk at Gaze think so! These talented interior architecture and design consultants are on a mission to make office spaces (similar to the one pictured on this month’s cover) become much more user friendly than ever before. Well, the niceties (and un-niceties) have been completed, the new Government has been sworn in and the nation now waits to see how the Big Three (or should that be medium size one and undersize two) will perform over the next three years. There will, of course be questions. Having looked over the many promises made in the Labour Party’s fiscal policy it seems to me as if everyone’s Christmases may come at once, but I wonder how many pledges are viable. The party has set a target of lifting 100,000 children out of child poverty by 2020. With this in mind wages will be boosted by introducing Fair Pay Agreements and raising the minimum wage to more than $16 an hour and up to $20 an hour by 2021. Families will also benefit from higher Working For Families payments and a Best Start payment to families with babies and toddlers. On the other hand, the announced 10 cent per litre tax on fuel for Aucklanders will no doubt erode those benefits in this part of the country. Or don’t struggling
families own cars? I may be nit-picking but I see Catch 22 situations emerging. What’s more, when I see the word ‘free’ as in free tertiary studies, I’m a bit sceptical. There’s not much that comes truly free in the world so I’m thinking the taxpayer will be footing this bill. I’m impressed that our new Prime Minister is keen to be everything to everyone – she has, indeed, promised to be a PM and a government for ALL New Zealanders; I hope so. Certainly she is measured, self-assured, and not afraid to do battle. And, I believe we will see some great battles between the Government and the Opposition and, perhaps, some sibling rivalry in the Coalition, too.
But looking at the allocation of finance portfolios – Grant Robertson as Minister of Finance came as no surprise – I had to smile at four associate Ministers of Finance;I guess the new government wants all three parties to have a say – did I mention bun fight last month? That aside, the PM is said to dream of heading an active government working alongside people to ensure that they have all their needs met. Perhaps that’s all it will be, a dream...or not. She has started by showing some mettle but can she keep scrapping between the minor parties at bay for three years or more? Like the rest of the nation I will have to wait and see. In the meantime, it is now full steam ahead with Jacinda and Winston at the helm and James Shaw riding on their coat tails.
Ms Adern seems genuinely earnest in her desire to create an even better New Zealand than what we have had and I expect that in settling on a large executive – 31 cabinet ministers, ministers outside of cabinet and under secretaries – she is intent on making a sound start.

Q&A
with chamber of commerce ceo
Michael Barnett
On the road from his Karaka property by 5.30am-ish and home again around 5.30 to 6pm, Auckland Chamber of Commerce CEO, Michael Barnett, can truthfully claim to be ‘fit’ for business. His early start means he is at the gym ahead of his working day, a routine he sees as important for coping physically and mentally with an incredibly diverse workload. While that ‘load’ includes steering the vigorous, not-for-profit association in its support of profitable business growth and numerous mentoring and advocacy roles, it also means keeping on top of a multitude of other local and national industry positions. Subsequently, EastLife asked Mr Barnett about his work/life balance.
You now live on a lifestyle block but have you always lived rurally or did you grow up a ‘city boy’ and are you Auckland ‘born and bred’. I grew up in Hamilton, one of a family of eight – I am a twin. I lived in Christchurch and Wellington then came to Auckland. I also built a small holiday home in Parekura Bay in the Bay of Islands and when I sold it I owned a six acre property in Orongo Bay; that’s when the “lifestyle block “ as a style of life got me. What ‘qualifications’ did you bring to the Chamber of Commerce when you took up your role 30 years ago? It wasn’t the qualifications it was the awareness by the Chamber that it was time to change. Change from an organisation that had support from the upper end of town and membership that ‘belonged’ because it was the right thing to do. The SME sector was dominating and there was an expectation that people should not be members just for sake of it – members wanted value and they wanted a voice that could provide them the best platform from which they could operate their businesses. This included anything from talent to infrastructure, policy to local government. Previously, I
12 | eastlife | november 2017
had a career in manufacturing, distribution, marketing, start up and procurement. Most people are familiar with the Chamber by name but do you think people (in general) know enough about what it does? No, I don’t believe they do and that’s our toughest role – to tell. On one hand people need to look at the advocating we do and the services we offer including advice, international trade, networking, training and mentoring and then take into account the 1000 people we place into employment with our members each year – disadvantaged youth and migrants. It’s gratifying our members are prepared to give such at risk people a chance. In general, do you think most SMEs know they can seek mentoring from you? Increasingly, yes, but it takes time and marketing investment. What do you see as the Chamber’s most important roles? I look at our “WHY “and that is to provide the best platform from which our members can operate. So, for some it’s the help at the start, for others it’s exporting, others infrastructure, others providing a collective voice – it varies for them all – some just want
to grow their businesses through networking. How much influence, if any, does the Chamber have in advocating for businesses with industry bodies? How about when lobbying government regarding business/ economic policy? We have some good relationships with Government at local and national level. We have made a huge difference on infrastructure over the years some noisy, some behind the scenes. Obviously we have worked closely with Government on migration and that shows with our employment success; the same goes for youth. From a local government perspective we meet regularly and present often. Not all the work is in a media headline or “the Chamber says!” How successful is the Chamber in working toward youth employment and encouraging young people into career opportunities/growth? Very, it’s one of the things I am proud of instigating. In the time you have been with the Chamber has your role changed? My role changes every day with a range of issues that need dealing with on behalf of the business
community, the state of the economy, the trade we do or intend doing, the policies we face and the governments we need to work with. How has the Chamber itself changed/developed over the past 30 years? The Chamber is more than double the size it was 30 years ago. It is a significant property owner and has influence across a wide range of areas and partnerships. Can you do justice to the many roles you fulfil? Not only are you chairman of the Chamber but chairman of the Auckland Children’s Santa Parade Trust, chairman of the Local Government Forum, chairman of the Auckland Business Leaders Group and so the long list goes on. what do you do to remove yourself from the business world? I operate at a high level, have very talented people many of whom have been with me for well over 10 years. I know what I am good at and I delegate. I don’t do trivia and I am focused on the things I can change or contribute to. However, I do enjoy cycling in summer, I’ve done Round Taupo three times (180K), I love photography and enjoy scenic rather than people but with family there are always occasions to capture as memories.
then start work at 6.45. Unless I have an after work commitment, I drive home at 4.30pm. I use the time to listen to ZB and catch up on the day – there is no daily grind only time which I make work for me. How big an impact do the Super City’s transport woes have on its businesses? What dollar figure in lost productivity would you estimate?
You live on the outreaches of Auckland and work in the city how do you deal with the daily grind of peak time traffic or can you work glide time and miss it?
The cost in productivity is billions. Until we have politicians who are prepared to accelerate their decisions and investment actions, we will have that cost and the opportunity to catch up on our decades of lack of infrastructure investment will be lost.
My day starts the same every day – I wake at 4.45am, drive to the Northern Club and go to the gym

Takanini, through to Pukekohe and wider Franklin), what needs to be done to ensure local workers get to work on time? Could rail be the answer or do we need to widen/improve existing roads?
Auckland has a $15b shortfall in infrastructure – commit what NZ could afford, and internationally tender the balance as PPP’s (Public Private Partnerships) and get the work done.
The answer will be a mix of road and rail and other innovative ways such as ride sharing and flexible work hours. The biggest problem we have is that we while we know we are growing, we have not made decisions at the pace we needed to so we could manage that growth – we now have growth and catch up.
If you could ask any three people living or dead to dinner, who would they be and why? My father – he died when I was under 40 – he never saw his return on his investment as a father.
Yes, as above.
Leonard Cohen – his poetry and music have been a big part of my life. There are poems I felt he wrote for me but know he didn’t yet would like to know what were his reason behind the words.
If you could be Minister of Finance for one day, what would you do first and why?
Nelson Mandella. I had a two hour lunch with him one day – he was wise and funny.
How about congestion charges on the motorway or is there another way?

Book journey leads to NASA ‘ Twelve months ago EastLife magazine talked to Botany author, Farida Master, about her newly released biography on international human rights campaigner, Zebranoo Gifford. Now, ROBYN YOUSEF picks up the story which saw Farida and Zebranoo touring the USA.
Imagine standing up at the podium at NASA’s Goddard Space Centre in Washington DC, USA, and lecturing to some of the world’s best brains on leadership, sustainability, conflict and peace? Well, Farida Master did just that this year and while admitting to some pre-nerves, this Indianborn Kiwi journalist has heaps of chutzpah and believes anything is possible Her journey to Goddard began long before her visit there in August this year. It began in 2013 when she made a short trip to her homeland of India, never imagining it would culminate in a two-year project to research and write a biography followed by a whirlwind book tour of the USA which included the NASA experience. She certainly never envisaged the highlight of that American trip – her address to Goddard Greenbelt’s civil servant workforce including scientists, engineers, academia, technicians and guests from federal and county agencies. That experience stemmed from her unexpected connection with UK-based Zerbanoo Gifford – “a fearless woman who has held fast to the causes of equality and global justice despite all odds.” The Indian-born, human rights activist was the first Asian woman to stand for parliament in Britain, and is founder of charitable organisation, the ASHA Centre. After 30 years in journalism, Farida was searching for a fresh challenge when she met up with Gifford – a fellow Zoroastrian – on that fateful trip to India. Both women are followers of one of the world’s oldest monotheistic religions and Farida says: “I connected with Zerbanoo at a time
16 | eastlife | november 2017
of my life when I was freelancing. Initially we communicated by email but then decided to meet in India at the end of the year. Within 10 minutes of meeting we were talking about working on a biography,” Farida says. “Zerbanoo invited me to London and suggested I should go straight there. A phone call to my husband and daughter (they always encourage me to follow my dreams) and I was off to stay with her for three and a half months, shadowing her and wading through her huge attic packed with archives of newspaper cuttings and letters. I didn’t even have time to return home for extra clothes!” But, the 55-year-old didn’t need many outfits. She spent most of her time in that London attic doing research for the biography on Zebranoo. Two years later, Zebranoo Gifford’s incredible drive, her many challenges and the success of ASHA, a unique leadership centre she founded for youth in the Forest of Dean in England, was all detailed in Farida’s book, Zebranoo Gifford – An Uncensored Life. It was published in December 2015 by HarperCollins and launched at the Times LitFest in India before being introduced here in New Zealand in January last year. “Writing a biography is an obsessive experience – you think constantly about that person and really try to get into the recesses of their mind and soul,” Farida says. “It’s almost as if you are possessed by a subject and stop living your own life because 24/7 you are thinking of the different nuances of their life, trying to understand the deep psyche, the intricacies of their inter-personal relationships, what drives them, and why they

did certain things or reacted in a particular manner – all in a nonjudgmental way.” The biography was so successful it was the catalyst for Master’s and Gifford’s book tour of the US which was lauded wherever they went – it even gained a significant mention in the prestigious magazine, Harper’s Bazaar as well at the India Times of New York. “Thousands of books are published every day so we decided it was important to be proactive and take the message of the book to a very diverse audience,” Farida explains. “It gave us an opportunity to reach out to hundreds of people and work at grassroots level....to take a page out of Zerbanoo’s biography: ‘You can achieve anything, nothing is impossible’.” And the success of the ambitious tour went way beyond the women’s expectations. “We spoke to a hugely diverse section of people – from Turkish women at the Turquoise Centre in Houston, to the Open New York Centre in Manhattan, a motley gathering of race relations and a women’s group at George Washington University, the Argentinean Tango group and groups of Indian women in Philadelphia, book clubs in New Jersey and several Zoroastrian Associations,” Farida explains. “Our book was also celebrated by society hostess and humanitarian Meera Gandhi at her historic home which once belonged to first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. It was a who’s who of influential people who turned up in full regalia. This was the New York event covered by Harper’s Bazaar.” www.eastlife.co.nz

Other highlights included being interviewed by American leadership coach and author, Leslie Grossman, at the New York Open Centre, lunch at the UN headquarters in New York, with UN representative Janet Salazar and also at NASA with an associate director for earth sciences, Dr Dorothy Zucker and several heads of departments. But, for both women the lecture at Goddard, in the world’s oldest and largest space centre, NASA, was especially memorable – “We had to pinch ourselves when we saw the electronic signboards at NASA announcing our event,” Farida says. Invited to speak at Goddard as part of the leadership colloquia series, of which the general focus was NASA’s organisational values and the role values play in leadership authenticity and courage and having transformational conversation that implements organisational and cultural change. Farida says the feedback was amazing. “There were so many questions asked and everyone had something to share. To think that at one time I had wondered what conversations we would have with the best brains in the world. And, yet, we all found a special connection and conversations just flowed.” Now back at her Botany and Ormiston Times desk, where she has worked for the past three years after a prolific journalism career in India and New Zealand, the question is: What’s next for Farida? For now, she’s enjoying her job and says she will always write. “But I don’t believe in saying ‘no’ to any opportunity so if there are other biographies to be written I’d like to be involved with some.” And, like the subjects of her books, I’m picking Farida will always be standing up for others of different cultures and beliefs, promoting leadership among the young and celebrating shared humanity. www.eastlife.co.nz

Pet insurance brings owners peace of mind EastLife talks to Pet Doctors about the value of pet insurance and how it can provide peace of mind when loved animals suffer from illness or injury which may require extended veterinary care. Insuring pets shouldn’t be seen as a luxury. It is the best thing you can do for them and your own peace of mind.
Petplan and Southern Cross Pet Insurance. Pet insurance policies vary in cover and cost and can be tailored to your particular needs.
Pet insurance has been around a long time, with the first policy apparently being sold in Britain in 1947.
It’s important to research what will be best for you and your pet. Remember, the policy and provider which is best for your neighbour’s cat, may not be the best for your dog!
New Zealand has one of the highest pet ownership rates in the world, and while pet insurance is becoming more popular, only four to seven per cent of New Zealand pets are insured. By comparison, in the UK the number is between 25-30 per cent, and in Australia between 10-15 per cent. Pet insurance provides partial or full cover for the veterinary treatment of a sick or injured pet. Unlike human healthcare, which is subsidised, there is no government subsidy for the care of our pets. For this reason a trip to your vet will likely be more expensive than a trip to your doctor. There are three main providers in New Zealand – Pet-n-sur,
Most policies, as with human health insurance, will exclude preexisting conditions, so the sooner you insure your puppy or kitten, the less likely it is there will be exclusions. To request a free pet insurance information pack from Pet Doctors visit www.nzpetdoctors. co.nz/pet-insurance
It’s well known the first three years of a child’s life are very important; that’s when all the ground work is being formed in the brain. Because children are learning and developing rapidly, it’s important this development takes place in a loving, caring and stimulating environment where individual needs are well catered for. It is also important for all children in an early childhood centre – regardless of their background – to feel included and accepted. At some point in a day or a week, children may look for a reliable person to whom they can go to for reassurance or a safe place where they feel relaxed and can gather their thoughts before going off to play again. Sometimes even the best early childhood setting can seem overwhelming because of the noise and number of children which is why having quiet spaces and a person they can confidently go to is so important.
We do not recommend a particular pet insurance brand, but we do strongly encourage all pet owners to have pet insurance.
Most children will choose someone they feel comfortable with and then it is up to that teacher to be available to meet their needs, be it with a bucket of water to splash in or with a reassuring cuddle.
Pet Insurance can prevent heart wrenching decisions over treatments and help you give your pet the best care.
When children play together they learn about socialising and communication as well as sharing and how to make friends.
Some children find these skills difficult, so it is great for them to mix and play with other children to whom these skills come easily and who will include the less confident in play. Sometimes a quiet chat is needed with the children about how everyone is different but we are made that way for a reason; everyone has their own talents and children need to learn to recognise and respect that individualism. As teachers in early childhood education our team is committed to helping each child see him or herself as a capable, confident learner, ready to take on the next adventure, with us by their side to encourage them. As children learn tolerance and respect for each other, they will also develop qualities of compassion and sharing – we aim daily to foster these attributes.
The best thing you can do for your pet is be prepared. At Pet Doctors we encourage all pet owners to insure their pets. We don’t mind which particular company you choose to have your insurance with, but we are happy to help you decide what is the best option for you and your pets. If you have any questions, or if you’d like some advice please come in to talk to us and ask us for a free pet insurance information pack.

Learn to become mindful Mindfulness expert, Leah Chandler, from Kids-Fit Australia, shares five useful tips to help children become more mindful. There’s a trick to teaching youngsters to become more mindful, that is, being more aware of the moment whilst recognising and accepting one’s own feelings and thoughts. I encourage children to try the following but also suggest that mums and dads show their youngsters how and do it with them. • When you wake up – be on your own and for two minutes – lie or sit down, close your eyes and focus on breathing slowly in and out

from the bottom of your belly. Pay attention to how your body and mind are feeling today. • Each day, write a list of five things that make you grateful and then close your eyes and imagine each one and why you are grateful for it. • Take three mindful breaths before doing homework, tests, participating in competitions or when feeling stressed at school. Breathe in and out slowly and
breathe from the bottom of the belly. This will help settle nerves and you will become more focused. • Eat slowly and focus on taste and texture; savour your food. Try this at least once a day to practice mindful eating, which means you will be more aware of what you are eating and why! • Take a few minutes for yourself each day, especially when feeling
tired or overloaded. Go for a walk through a garden or park (always take a parent or big sibling with you so they can help you stay safe, even if they sit away from you). Or just hang out in your room or the backyard and relax and breathe. It is a great way to bring your mind and body back to calm state, especially after a big day at school. If these help you then maybe you can teach a friend to be mindful too!

Refreshing changes New housing, new shopping complex, new offices, new roads – Beachlands is booming with contemporary urbanisation making its mark. But in the ‘old town’ there remains a sense of the quiet seaside environs which originally attracted the area’s long time residents. What’s more HELEN PERRY discovered that community spirit is at its very heart.
Many hands make light, or so the saying goes. And, in Beachlands, these oft quoted words have once again proved true. Last month, the first Beachlands Art Exhibition to take place in the Beachlands Memorial Hall since its foyer was rejuvenated marked the successful second stage of a makeover project begun earlier in the year with repainting the historic Log Cabin, a complementary community facility just down the road. Local artist, Jennie Jonker, who co-ordinated the exhibition, involving some 29 local artists, also guided refurbishment of the hall entranceway which includes a recycled timber display cabinet she, herself, restored. “Despite all the new development going on around Beachlands, the older streets and original village centre retain their laid back quietude and with two solid facilities available to the community it makes sense to see them in good condition and put to use,” Jennie says. Although owned by Auckland Council she says both are in the care of a community trust. “When it was decided the Log Cabin needed a fresh look, more in keeping with its seaside location, four paint colours were chosen and locals were invited to vote on their favourite. Now the interior is a soft www.eastlife.co.nz

Then, when it came to the hard graft Jennie says volunteers turned out by the dozen and had the painting down to a fine art – it took just one weekend to complete the job. That done, it was time to focus on the hall. “The foyer is just the beginning, next comes the interior. The art exhibition was a great way to

celebrate and demonstrate ways in which the hall can be used. In fact, the area is growing so fast, most days there is something going on at either the hall or the cabin, often both.” And, Jennie herself has benefited from the facilities. “I’m now a keen volunteer but in the past I attended Log Cabin art classes run by Helen Blair and I have also taught children’s art there. However, when you’re teaching others there’s not a lot of time for your own work. “I’ve been painting all my life, acrylics and oils, starting back in the Netherlands where I took classes. Then my partner and I with our four children immigrated to New Zealand 11 years ago settling
here in Beachlands. However, having the time to commit to the easel isn’t always easy so my painting tends to come and go in waves.” And, right now, Jennie’s art is on the back burner while she devotes herself to the business of restoring recycled and unique timber furniture. “I’m really enjoying it,” she says. “The work still includes an element of art; I have to be creative and think of solutions but I also have to be practical.” So, perhaps that’s it for now until Jennie adds, “but, yes, I really must get back to painting, I don’t want to let slip something I love.” eastlife | november 2017 |

Vivo Holiday Season Skin and hair tips
Showing your
true colours
This month Vivo Hair & Beauty Howick and Pakuranga provide tips for keeping hair and skin healthy over summer. Between travel plans and gift buying, there is no doubt that the festive season and summer vacations are nearly here. Importantly, everyone wants to look their best throughout the holidays so the teams at Vivo Howick and Pakuranga have come up with four top hair and skin tips to add the shine.
Cleanse skin with Micellar Water Regardless of hectic schedules, start and end the day with this effective facial cleanser. It removes sweat and poreclogging debris from your complexion, creating a nice, clean base. Beauty therapist Lainey from Vivo Hair & Beauty calls it her miracle product. “Made up of tiny balls of cleansing oil molecules suspended in soft water, Micellar Water cleans on a deeper level than many cleansers and is a great three-in-one product – make up removal, a wash and a moisturiser!”
Remember sunscreen If heading away for the holidays do toss an extra bottle of sunscreen in your bag. Use Skinnies to protect your skin without the hassle of oiliness or white residue. New to Vivo, and already a team favourite, Skinnies is a broad
spectrum sunscreen and beauty gel combined. It provides long-lasting UV protection plus 80 minutes water resistance. Its lipid soluble vitamins and potent antioxidants moisturise and repair, while the soft shimmer and tint in Skinnies evens up skin so you look as good as gold!
Owner-optometrist of Eyes of Howick, KRISTINE JENSEN talks about colour vision.
Hair Fragrances
I see your true colours Shining through I see your true colours And that’s why I love you So don’t be afraid to let them show Your true colours True colours are beautiful Like a rainbow…..
Hair absorbs and carries fragrance longer than skin, so while hopping from one place to another, hair fragrances are a great way to stay smelling fresh for longer.
Just as Australians are voting on marriage equality the above lyrics come to mind. With our diverse society, I believe New Zealand is enriched by its many cultures, religions and outlooks on life.
The Kerasilk range of hair perfumes from Goldwell are alluring, complex and very sophisticated; they’ll carry you from day to night. Choose from four hair fragrances at only $48 each.
Every one of my own staff bring something unique to the table; I have realised over the years we can all learn from each other and enjoy and benefit from our differences.
Treat your tresses Minimise styling time with soft manageable tresses. Nourish hair with a great leave-in post wash product or indulge your hair in the shower with a leave-in treatment. By regenerating and nourishing your hair it will fall into place naturally. Senior stylist, Gina from Vivo Howick says in-salon and at-home hair treatments are a great way to keep hair looking and feeling good – “They can also save time on styling!”
So speaking of true colours, here are a few colour vision facts; • Within the retina we have 2 types of light sensitive cells or photoreceptors; rods and cones. • Rods work only in low light and detect either light or dark • There are 3 types of cones that detect red, green or blue light. Cones work best in bright light which is why we can’t see colour in the dark! • Neither rods nor cones work their best in mid light; making this the most difficult light condition for our vision – this is why driving at dusk can be tiring. Despite having only 3 types of
cones; our brain allows us to see millions of colours. When coloured light is reflected from an object, each of the 3 coloured cones are stimulated differently depending on the colour of the object. A yellow item will stimulate both the red and green cones. This information is then sent to the visual part of the brain where it is analysed and allows us to perceive colour. Do we all see the same colours? Some of us have a colour deficiency; in fact 8% of males and 0.5% of females have some degree of colour vision defect. Furthermore, there are different degrees of colour deficiency. Red-green colour vision defects are the most common and lead to difficulty distinguishing between some shades of red, yellow and green. Blue-yellow defects are rarer and cause problems with differentiating shades of blue and green and also dark blue and black. Then there’s a rare form of colour vision called tetrachromacy whereby some women have 4 cones. This may allow them to enjoy a diversity of colours which is 100 times greater than that which is accessible to the rest of us! So that’s it, a little philosophy and little science. Embrace your true colours and let them shine…. www.eyesofhowick.co.nz

Personal enhancement procedures Respected plastic surgeon, MARTIN REES from Marina Specialists addresses the desire by many people to improve on biological features they were born with or changes that have occurred through ageing.
‘
Human nature is such that many of us are not content with how we look or ‘who we are’ for some reason. Nearly all of us have an aesthetic sense that we use to recognise what is beautiful in life; a flower, a bird, child or one’s partner; even one’s self! Equally there are some creatures, sights or people that we do not like to look at as our aesthetic sense of beauty is offended, which is an unpleasant experience.
What is vitally important is to engage with a plastic surgeon you feel comfortable with; someone whose integrity you can trust, who has many years of experience with well-honed surgical skills to produce consistently good results with a minimum number of unwanted side effects.”
We all have a strong sense of personal identity from seeing ourselves in photos (as other people see us) or in the mirror as we usually see ourselves ( the reverse of how we actually look!) Some people are unfortunately born with features that are outside the ‘normal range’ (biological variation). Some of us as we age change considerably and become something we are not used to seeing...a face or body reminiscent of our mother or father! That person looking back at me is no longer ‘me’ as my brain remembers but the image of an old man or woman. So many patients tell me things like this. The photos taken at a family wedding often catch one unawares, ‘side-on’ showing that humped or hooked nose, or a thick, fat neck that isn’t obvious from the front when looking in the mirror.
This may precipitate a person into seeking professional advice from a plastic surgeon as to what can be done to ‘reverse the clock’ or take 20 years off the face. Some people like to ‘grow old gracefully’ and simply accept themselves as they are. They are perfectly content with themselves and their lives. Others struggle with the effects of ageing and want to fight against it as strongly as possible.
subtle changes are all that are needed.
Modern surgical techniques and medical advances can produce some astounding transformations for the better. Big improvements are often possible; sometimes
This person must be able to offer high quality surgery and be available for post-op care and support. No one regrets buying quality.

Going for the cheapest price with a holiday thrown in at a distant and exotic destination may be a good idea at the time but I’ve seen many complications and bad results from ‘cosmetic tourism’. It is much better not to go to someone whose credentials, skills and training cannot be easily ascertained. At Marina Specialists we offer quality surgery in a quality facility with quality after care by highly skilled surgeons with many years of training and surgical experience to produce results you will be pleased with and we can be proud of!

ACUPUNCTURE AND MALE INFERTILITy DR JENNy LI is a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine. She holds a Bachelor of Acupuncture, a Masters in Health Practice and is studying for a PhD in Clinical Acupuncture Science majoring in fertility. Dr Li talks about male infertility.
Male infertility shouldn’t be viewed as a single condition, but rather as the symptom of a few possible male reproductive disorders including dysfunction during sexual intercourse, ejaculatory impotence, immunological causes, sperm plasma abnormalities, iatrogenic origin, systematic diseases, congenital abnormality, injury of the testes, male subsidiary gonad inflammation, endocrinal origin, and other issues.
The pathology of male infertility can be summarised in TCM by six main patterns: • Qi Deficiency due to congenital deficiency from parents • Qi or/and blood deficiency due to prolonged illness or exhaustion • Liver Qi stagnation due to emotional disorders • Obstructed semen due to internal toxin and injuries • Internal cold retention due to debilitation of ‘Life Gate Fire’ • Genital inflammation and infection due to poor lifestyle and diet Based on above, the general approach to TCM treatment of male infertility involves replenishing and enriching kidney essence; harmonising internal environment; regulating organ functions; balancing yin and yang and clearing toxins and other pathogenic factors.
Among them all, the key to male infertility is said to lie in the kidneys. In TCM concepts of reproduction, the kidneys store the fundamental essence of reproduction and human life which supports birth, development and maturity, as well as determining ageing and death.
TCM treatment methods include a combination of acupuncture, herbal medicine and health management covering lifestyle and dietary modifications. They work together to help improve male sexual ability and function in order to achieve the success of pregnancy. In addition, acupuncture has been shown to potentially have a positive effect on sperm maturity, quality and fertilisation ability.
Male fertility is also associated with other organs – the liver governing the Qi (energy); the heart, controlling blood circulation; the spleen and stomach, transferring food essence and providing the www.eastlife.co.nz

resource for kidney essence.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), male infertility is a result of imbalances between yin and yang, disorders of Qi (energy) and blood, internal factors of deficiency and excess in organs, as well as external environmental and lifestyle influences.
The kidney is the organ of water, the abode of yin and yang, the sea of essence, and it determines life and death. The Gate of Life, is where the original life essence of the individual is based. We are warm-blooded beings, and from this Gate of vitality comes our ability to be warm. When we die the fire from Gate of vitality goes out, our bodies grow cold and we cease to live.
– WHy yOU SHOULD CARE
Snoring, or any breathing that is audible, is a sign of airway restriction. As air is sucked in and out, it is the airway that vibrates causing the noise. When the airway is partially or fully closed, it is this noise or vibration that puts the brain on alert. It can happen many times a night which results in poor sleep quality and tiredness during the day. Tired people are more likely to be irritable and short tempered and that affects relationships with spouses or partners and family. They, too, can suffer disturbed sleep from your snoring which makes them tired. A tired brain doesn’t concentrate well and can result in poor memory that affects work life as well. Disturbed sleep associated with snoring can result in an enhanced appetite which can cause weight gain and makes the problem even worse. Then there is also a higher risk of heart disease, strokes and other health issues. People with snoring problems are more likely to need the bathroom at night as hormones that affect the bladder are disrupted. Impotence can also be related to sleeping disorders.
Alcohol makes snoring worse as it relaxes the muscles of the airway. Sleeping on one’s back has much the same result as gravity affects the airway. Women after menopause are at a higher risk of sleep disturbances and snoring too. The good news is that there are ways to monitor your sleep at night and find out what’s happening. We have a device that screens your sleep when at home and, depending on the result, we can make a simple device which can be worn comfortably in the mouth at night. It brings your lower jaw forward and opens the airway. People who have been prescribed CPAP machines can benefit from these as well. Health-wise, relationship-wise, work-wise.....it is very wise to care if you snore! Contact us if you do.

Infertility is an increasing social and medical problem globally. According to World Health Organisation statistics, infertility afflicts 14% of couples with 20% caused by male dysfunctions and another 30% involving problems between both parties. In other words, male infertility is a factor in about half of all cases.

frog in your throat?
ruby’S JEllybEan tomS a SWEEt trEat
An encounter with a blue frog at the table could be quite the ‘surreal’ experience; however, such situations are all too common for Kiwis who take a different approach to breakfast than enjoying their daily bread. Blue Frog’s range of cereals features only organic and natural ingredients, with products suited to vegan, paleo or gluten-free lifestyles. The latest in this range, Crunchy Peanut Butter with Cacao and Zesty Raspberries, is now available at selected supermarkets and wholefood stores (RRP $17.49). What a hopping good way to start the day!
It’s said good things come in small packages and when you pop a Ruby’s Jellybean Tomato in your mouth, the sweet explosion from this tiny ‘fruit’ is sure to be a big surprise. Red, snack-sized and ever so tasty, these sweet tomatoes are ideal in lunchboxes, delicious in a salad or add to a quick pasta dinner. To enhance their flavour keep them in a bowl in a cool, shaded spot (not the fridge) so they are handy when needed. Ruby’s Jellybean Tomatoes are available in the fresh produce section of all Countdown supermarkets nationwide (RRP $6.99 per punnet).
hoW WEEt it iS Rodney So’oialo could eat a stack of them and Chris Jack plenty too, but, while we don’t know how many Weet-Bix our current crop of All Blacks can tackle, apparently they can now do so with far less impact on their cholesterol levels. In addition to offering plenty of fibre and iron and B vitamins, Weet-bix Cholesterol Lowering (RRP $7.69 per 440g pack) features plant sterols, intended to actually help lower cholesterol.
hiP to bE SQuarE! One EastLife writer says, while he can’t stand it, his missus loves caramel. Then again she also claims to love him so we’re not sure what her opinion is worth! As Fibre One Salted Caramel Squares pack a salty zing along with their delectable, gooey sweetness, both said writer (a bit of an old salt) and his long-suffering ‘sweetie’ both enjoyed these soft baked treats. So, maybe there is some accounting for taste after all. Fibre One Salted Caramel Squares (RRP $4.99) are available from supermarkets nationwide.

Seasonal fruit
PACKED WITH NATURAL GOODNESS
Eating fresh fruit is a natural, easy way to boost wellness during spring’s variable weather and with the 5+ A Day philosophy it’s easy to access good sources of vitamins and minerals to help the immune system do its job well. Seasonal fruit, such as mandarins, oranges and lemons, taste great and are still in abundance. So, by combining healthy eating practices with exercise, the chances are you’ll meet summer feeling fit and fine. Here are some quick 5+ A Day tips on how seasonal produce can help boost immunity, while adding a burst of colour to everyday meals. But grab them quick, some of these fruits will soon make way for new season pickings.
tamarilloS Originally from South America, tamarillos arrived in New Zealand in the 1890s. Low in fat and calories, they are a good source of vitamin C which is essential for the growth and repair of our skin, teeth and blood vessels. Peel tamarillos before using them in your meals as the skin can make them taste bitter. Use a sharp knife to peel the tamarillos, or cover them with boiling water for about two minutes, then plunge into ice water and pierce the skin; it will then slip off easily. For breakfast or a quick dessert, chop some peeled tamarillos and mix them with stewed apples to add flavour and goodness to porridge or low-fat yoghurt. Casseroles and stews can be given a flavour boost by adding whole peeled tamarillos or slices.
manDarinS Two mandarins provide 180 per cent of daily vitamin C requirements. For a healthy workday lunch, gently toss together mandarin segments, salad greens, chopped spring onion, sliced capsicum and shredded chicken. Finish with a homemade dressing. Salsa is another great way to add a sweet, tangy flavour burst to winter meals. Peel and dice mandarin segments and mix with finely chopped red onion, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice, olive oil and chopped coriander. For extra heat, add chilli. Mix gently and serve with grilled chicken breast or with tacos.
kiWifruit Kiwifruit is nutrient-rich thanks to its high-fibre content, vitamins, antioxidants and minerals. As well as being a good source of vitamin C, green kiwifruit contains an enzyme which aids digestive comfort; and gold kiwifruit helps the body to absorb iron from food. At breakfast, dice or slice a kiwifruit and add it to your porridge or cereal. For a nutritious midmorning snack, mix chunks of peeled kiwifruit with low-fat yoghurt. Try mashing or blending a peeled kiwifruit into your favourite vinaigrette or salad dressing for a fruity twist.
lEmonS
orangES
A good source of vitamin C, this tangy fruit has many uses from baking to perking up salads and marinades. For a fresh slaw, toss finely sliced fennel and chopped walnuts then, as a dressing, squeeze over fresh lemon juice, red wine vinegar and olive oil. When roasting root vegetables, squeeze over the juice of one to two lemons and tuck the halves in around the vegetables. Once the vegetables are cooked, squeeze over the juice of another half a lemon and sprinkle with plenty of chopped flat-leafed parsley. Alternatively, prepare an Italian gremolata – finely grated lemon zest mixed with finely chopped parsley and garlic – and sprinkle over savoury dishes before serving.
Juicy, thirst-quenching oranges are a favourite in many households. They have many health benefits including being a good source of vitamin C. The juice, zest and fruit can be used in sweet and savoury dishes. For a Moroccan-inspired lunch, combine cooked couscous with cooked shredded chicken, fresh mint, chopped pistachios, and one peeled, chopped orange. Gently combine peeled and thinly sliced oranges with sliced red onion, feta cheese and olives for a colourful salad. Sprinkle over finely chopped fresh mint or coriander and finish with a homemade vinaigrette before serving. If you fancy a sweet, zesty beverage, mix freshly squeezed orange juice with your favourite herbal tea.

In a Remuera city garden At the heart of Auckland is its leafy green suburbs and, at the heart of those JON RAWLINSON found Keren McDonnell. When spring finally deems to put in an appearance, keen gardeners will find plenty of rambles on which to ramble. And, while these may offer numerous garden gates to peer over, the Auckland Garden DesignFest is perhaps without peer when it comes to the splendid nature of properties on display. “It’s a great cause and a bit of fun. I love talking to people about gardens so I’m really looking forward to it,” says designer, Keren McDonnell of M&M Landscape Design. “It’s a win-win, really, being able to show people what you’re passionate about while helping some good causes in the process.” During the fest’ (November 25-26) Keren – an experienced landscape designer – will present her own home garden in Remuera for the first time. “Our garden was such a big project that it’s just nice to show. Any garden design is a collaboration between designer and client. I would have been happy to show a client’s garden but the beauty of this one is that we’ve handled the entire project all at once.” Drawing on inspiration from gardens she visited at the Chelsea Flower Show during her years in London, Keren has used planting to ensure privacy, developing an oasis in suburbia with views of Rangitoto. She has also maximised space to make this a most useable area, complete with split level lawns, entertaining area, and a pool and spa. “Proportion and scale were very important to me and I wanted to design something that was contemporary but also suited the style of the house [a 1920s arts and crafts home],” she explains. “We really wanted a family-friendly garden but one where children’s things didn’t take over. It’s quintessentially a family garden with European influences – strong lines and structure – which fits in with the house while having just a touch of whimsy.”

Keren McDonnell Originally from Manawatu and Taranaki, Keren and her husband (Paul) lived in London for 10 years prior to settling in Remuera in 2011. “My parents are both avid gardeners and horticulturalists and we lived on a fruit and flower farm when I was young, so gardening is in my blood. “Paul and I lived in Battersea close to where they hold the Chelsea

Flower Show, so I went along and found plenty of inspiration.” A generous slice of that English country garden inspiration, it appears, has been transferred to her Remuera backyard, albeit with decidedly Kiwi additions. “I like using perennial planting, which people don’t use that often, as well as native plants, but not in a traditional way. Rather than in their

wild state, I tend to trim natives to make them more sculptural, or I use different combinations,” Keren says. “I look to design a garden as if I was painting a picture – thinking about what plants work best for the climate or environment. It’s all about shape, texture and colour of the overall garden. I enjoy creating beautiful things; it just gives me tremendous satisfaction.”
PRESERvING AUCKLAND’S LEAFy GREENS Despite a growing demand for housing in Auckland, landscape designer, Keren McDonnell, believes our city’s green spaces must be retained. “From a holistic point of view, I think it’s very important. We need space where kids can run around and where we can grow a few veggies. I think Auckland Council should be more acutely aware of that,” she says.
“I’m quite a fan of English writer and designer, Monty Don. He advocates the benefits of growing and getting your hands into the soil as a way of connecting to nature as well as simply for our own personal satisfaction and mental stability.” Although Keren has trained as a town planner, these days she is kept busy helping her clients create beautiful, functional
outdoor spaces, often where space is at a premium. “With urbanisation, I think people want to make the most of the space they have. Larger gardens in the city are a luxury, but you can still get a lot from smaller spaces,” she says. “It comes down to clever planning and placement. And, to ensure privacy, strategically-placed planting is a wonderful thing.” www.eastlife.co.nz
BALANCING INVESTMENTS
Monterey gallery still evolving 18 years on
Local Authorised Financial Adviser DAVID MORGAN discusses role of shares in long term investment planning.
This month, Monterey Gallery co-owner, HOLLY DAVIES talks about the gallery’s new exhibition featuring the abstract work of Mo Stewart and ceramics by Kiya Nancarrow.
With a new government taking over in Wellington change is in the air. Many are already looking towards 2018 and wondering what the future holds. Regardless of our political perspective, the future is always uncertain.
Last month we celebrated Monterey Gallery’s 18th birthday and it’s no small feat that this humble little gallery has continued to evolve for nearly two decades in our beautiful but far east Auckland suburb! It wouldn’t be without the continued support of our patrons, artists, our faithful regulars, new friends and the Howick Village community, so, thank you! It’s hard to believe just nine months have passed since I started at Monterey and it has been a roller coaster of back-to-back exhibitions, eight in total so far, but we’re not stopping yet – we have two more exhibitions before the end of the year and next up is a solo show of paintings by Mo Stewart which opens on November 4, 3pm. If you’ve had the pleasure of seeing Mo’s earlier works you’ll know she hasn’t always focused on abstracts. Her earlier paintings included huge bodies of stunning portraits and even a period where she painted highly detailed tin-can cities complete with matchbox cars and crowds of tiny pedestrians. Abstract painting was a challenge Mo set upon herself a few years ago and her intention is to find balance between calm and chaos with her heavy, oversized brush strokes and soft graphite details. Gesture is evidently important within her search for those harmonious combinations and the optimum balance is an elusive thing. Each painting transforms

When making investment decisions we also look to the future and, in planning for the uncertainties of life, ask ourselves; How long should I work? How long will I live? How do I grow my wealth?

Understanding how to invest to achieve long-term objectives, whilst managing short term risk, is essential. ‘Growth Assets’, such as shares, have consistently outperformed bank deposits over longer periods of time (e.g. 10 years plus). And this is true despite periodic market downturns.
several times but countless layers hiding beneath add positively to the overall texture of each piece. Mo has been a practising artist for over 15 years and she has been a finalist in the Estuary Art Awards, placed second in the Franklin Art Awards and first place in Royal Easter Show. Her paintings will be accompanied by elegantly coiled ceramics made by Waiheke-based artist, Kiya Nancarrow.
The New Zealand share market has returned an average 10% per annum for the past 10 years, a period that includes the Global Financial Crisis. A 30-year measure of global markets averages almost 8% per annum. In an age where bank deposits pay an inflation-adjusted 2%-3% per annum, the inclusion of shares in investment planning
may be vital to the achievement of long-term goals and a comfortable retirement. But we must get the balance right. Share markets perform well over long periods but they can be volatile over short periods so it is important investors retain a portion of their assets in more stable investments. This helps avoid the need to sell assets at an inopportune time. The right balance will differ from investor to investor, based on factors such as age, life expectancy and needs. An Authorised Financial Adviser can help make the most of your investments. The past few weeks have also seen exciting changes at Spicers – the company has renamed and rebranded as “AdviceFirst”. The change coincides with our expansion and the broadening of our advisory services which now include investment planning, Kiwisaver, personal insurance and specialist business insurance. Whilst we love the new look, it is important to acknowledge our long history as “Spicers” and the high regard with which it is held among our clients. For Mark, Rebecca and myself, it remains business as usual.

363 EAST TAMAKI ROAD
EAST TAMAKI’S NEWEST BUSINESS HUB Own your premises, not lease! Today’s cost of funds = it is cheaper for you to own than lease. Every property cycle has a time when it is viable to secure ownership, reduce occupation costs and build an asset base. Gaze Smart Property Solutions have worked their signature magic on the five-acre site at 363 East Tamaki Road. What was previously the Downer’s head office and Manukau City Council building has received a million-dollar facelift to become a smart, contemporary commercial space comprised of five separate units. An accessible location on a main arterial route makes the prospect even more enticing for business owners. The office strata titles range from 220-260m2 and priced from $835,000, including carparks. It’s an exceptional opportunity for astute investors and those who seek to purchase and occupy their own business space, instead of costly leasing. There are 48 carparks onsite and naming rights are available. Top floor (Tenancies D and E) is occupied by Advanced Security, who control all CCTV and security, while the ground floor (Tenancy A) is well-suited to a courier or distribution business, with separate and direct access to the carpark. Separate to, but finished in the same contemporary colour scheme and located 20 metres from the main building, the neighbouring storage warehouse offers 29-109m2 of self-contained space. This comes at an average cost of $1500 per month for 80m2 and is an accessible, convenient addition to the already enticing business prospect.

Owning business premises Advantages of owning premises:
You own a business. You operate from rented premises. You work hard, take risks, take the bumps, and have a successful enterprise. Then it’s time to sell up and move on. Now, the big question – will you realise full value?
• Fixed costs/no rent. Purchasing premises avoids exposure to increasing rent. In today’s market it’s possible to secure a fixed-rate mortgage loan with potential to refinance later at a lower rate to reduce total costs. When the mortgage is repaid, monthly occupation costs can be eliminated.
Possibly not. But a new East Tamaki business hub at 363 East Tamaki Road, could be the answer to realising full value if and when the time comes to sell your business. Here’s a ‘snapshot’ of how owning a floor at the new development shapes up against leasing: • Lease: 222m2 x $230psm plus 8 car parks at $15 each pw = $57,300 pa • Purchase: $850k at 4.5% interest only = $38,250 pa CEO and founder of TPT Group, Mike Marr says owning a commercial property makes sense. “It provides flexibility and agility to your business and creates long term value, allowing business owners to create a significant property business.” He adds that a convenient location is often vital to success. Combined with the other factors which generate goodwill, location can influence the inherent value of a business.
Business owners who can’t transfer their premises to a new owner may find they can’t fully realise upon years of hard work. Most commercial leases contain restrictions on assigning, subletting or transferring the leased premises to another party. This is usually necessary and reasonable from the perspective of landlords who obviously have the right to ensure any successor to a business, or to a lease, has a reasonable chance of keeping up the rent. However, such restrictions can go beyond simply obtaining the reasonable consent of the landlord and, in rare cases, may allow for that consent to be withheld arbitrarily. Such additional restrictions can impede the sale of a business and deprive a business

owner of its full value. Determination of what is a reasonable basis for a landlord to withhold consent to the assignment, sub-letting or transfer of a lease is often dealt with specifically by the terms of the lease, but can also be a subject of dispute, delay and uncertainty. By the time final determination is made, the deal in question may be long gone. Lease terms can be advantageous or a hindrance – a long lease commitment may sit on the wrong side of the balance sheet if potential new owners of your business don’t want to occupy the premises. Had you owned the premises, then the site could be sold separately at market rate, or tenants sourced to support an ongoing asset investment.
Get yourshelf sorted!
• Tax deductions. An owner can deduct depreciation and mortgage interest payments, which reduces tax liability. Repairs, maintenance, taxes and other costs can be written off. Improvements, may also qualify for depreciation tax advantages. • Location. Owning offices provides a permanent location, delivering a location ‘brand’ to customers. • Investment/capital gain. Over time the premises is likely to gain value, adding to the company’s capital valuation. That gain may be realised as income when the business is sold. If keen to own business premises contact David on 021 908 888 to find out more about the new owner-occupier opportunity at 363 East Tamaki Road. – Submitted by Gaze Corporation, Interior architecture and design consultants

Changing nature of housing leads to more co-ownership in howick Director at Fencible Law, Richard Galbraith, talks about the increase in co-ownership and its implications.
The last 20 years of unprecedented immigration into Howick and its surrounding areas has seen home prices soar. Sadly, this has changed the traditional method for our younger generation and made it more difficult for them to follow the Kiwi dream and purchase their first home in Howick or Pakuranga. It can still be done but usually involves some form of co-ownership or parental support financially. Life was simple when I first practised law in Howick. A young person or couple saved hard for a few years for a deposit, found a house, went to a bank for a first mortgage and, welcome to your first home! Ninety percent of our first home conveyancing transactions were of this nature – simple, safe and great for the new house owner. Now, only 10% of transactions are this simple.
down are substantially greater when money and home ownership is involved. We now have to address various matters: What happens if your child’s relationship breaks down? What happens if a parent dies? Are there funds available to treat other siblings fairly? A Co-Ownership Agreement (or Property Sharing Agreement) is an absolute must. Practical issues in co-ownership need to be addressed in an agreement. These include: •U p front and future capital payments •O ngoing expenditure for maintenance • Borrowing arrangements • Payment of rates and insurance

Still waiting for spring rush ‘ Total Focus Principal, Greg Roy areinz, gives an update on the local real estate market happenings.
The spring rush is yet to really start but there has been reasonably good attendance at our open homes and auctions. As reported last month, there are serious buyers out there but a shortage of listings from which to choose. REINZ September sales statistics just released show the median for our area had a upwards resurgence to finish at $1,086,500, up from August’s $1,022,500 but down 2% from September 2016’s $1,107,000. When you look back two years, the median was $964,000 and five years ago it was just $635,000. The volume of sales, however, continues to be very average with a total of 120 sales for the month. This was down on the same month
last year when we had 137 and well down on September 2015’s 211. The holdup with a new government being formed appears to also be holding up new listings coming to the market with realestate.co.nz currently showing 306 properties for sale in our area. This is up slightly from the same week a month earlier but down from the same week last year when we had 330. For Auckland overall, the numbers are similar with the median moving up slightly from last month to settle at $845,000 which is where the median was 12 months ago. Sales are well down with only 1591 for the month compared to last month’s 183 and they are
Auction numbers have also declined. Properties sold by auction across New Zealand in September numbered 807, a fall of 54.5% on the same time last year. Auctions now represent only 14.9% of all sales nationally.”
well down on a year ago when there were 2321 sales. Current Auckland listings stand at 7429 and are actually up on the same time last year when there was 6513 available. Nationally, there were 5428 properties sold during September which represented a fall of 26.2% year-on-year being down from 7352. This is the lowest number of properties sold in the month
of September for six years. If you take Auckland out of the equation, nationally volumes still decreased by 23.7% year-on-year. Auction numbers have also declined. Properties sold by auction across New Zealand in September numbered 807, a fall of 54.5% on the same time last year. Auctions now represent only 14.9% of all sales nationally, and Auckland, which traditionally sees a large portion of properties by auction, had a decrease of 57% in comparison to September 2016; only 422 (26.5%) of all properties sold in September were via auction. Looking at the time left before Christmas it’s difficult to know if we will see an increase in market activity or not. Please feel free to contact me anytime on 027496 6966 to discuss your property needs.

More on ‘clubbing’ Wynyard Wood consultant, RICHARD OSBORNE, whose specialties include commercial law and intellectual property law, writes on issues concerning the business community Some time ago we commented on changes to the way clubs, societies and associations are regulated. They are a huge part of New Zealand life, generally small, with a limited asset basis and run by enthusiastic members, banded together for the love of a communal activity such as sport, culture or another pastime. Sometimes, they have a wider focus, perhaps allowing communal administration of property or other assets as part of a wider activity or ownership structure. But, in all cases, the members cannot obtain a personal benefit from the grouping. It is not like a company where a share gives a right of personal property in its assets. The current law regulating such groups is the Incorporated Societies Act 1908. Two points spring from the name, first, the association is incorporated, that is, it becomes a legal person like a company and, secondly, the law of regulation was passed more than 100 years ago. The law regulating
companies was upgraded in the Companies Act 1993. Basically, this Act sets out how to run a company, the rights and responsibilities of the directors and shareholders, how meetings are called and decisions made, especially voting and, to a degree, how disputes are settled. Generally, a view developed that the law governing clubs, societies and associations needed updating, with closer attention paid to the modernised company law set out in the Companies Act 1993, especially around giving a clear roadmap for running a club. Accordingly, a draft of a new Incorporated Societies Bill has been under review by the voluntary sector and others, mostly positively. The Bill has finished consultation and is now back with government (notably the Ministry of Business Innovation and Development). It gives much clearer guidance to those running clubs, societies and association on all matters relating to those mutual associations. The expectation is that the final form
of the Bill may be introduced into Parliament sometime in 2018 with possible enactment in 2019. From enactment, the current plan seems to be for a staged implementation period of an initial two-year period relating to existing clubs with the legislation coming fully into force in four years. Subsequently, it appears there is no need to panic. However, as with the Companies Act, change is coming, inevitably. It should force societies to reconsider what they are doing and their opportunities and risks – are their assets sufficient to sustain them for the future, should they combine with similar clubs, do they have unfettered access to publicly-owned assets for the foreseeable future (club rooms, sports grounds and so on) and what are the demographics of the members? Ideally, the impending legislation should be a prompt to consider how the current governance of the club could be improved and where it is heading to, by itself or with others similarly placed. From that perspective, the leisurely pace for introducing the new rules should not obscure the importance of re-assessing the underlying position of the club and its future.
Hideaways by Sam Stuchbury Some may have to live in the big smoke but, come the weekend, we Kiwis are keen as mustard to get away from it all – as anyone who’s ever negotiated the Southern Motorway on a long weekend Friday will confirm! From beachside baches to tramping huts and hunting shacks, this book charts our love affair with homes away from home. • Sam Stuchbury: Hideaways | RRP $55 | Godwit / Penguin Random House
Apartment Living New Zealand Clever thinking allows Catherine Foster to think inside the box. As pressure continues on housing stocks, more Kiwis are embracing apartment living. Consequently, utilising smaller spaces (less than 90m2) to their full potential is a challenge for architects and designers. However, the apartments featured in this book reveal that compact homes need not want for style and sophistication. • Catherine Foster: Apartment Living New Zealand | RRP $50 | Penguin NZ

Made to motor, made to measure ‘ When it comes to motorsport merchandise, Rik Dalton knows more than most about supplying teams and fans with products they love. Whether fans follow Holden, Toyota, Ford or others, they like to look the part and Rik’s company delivers the right looks to suit.
Apparel by Design Ltd New Zealand and Apparel by Design Australia Pty Ltd, founded by Rik in 2005, are well known for their manufacturing and distribution agreements with WRC Rally, Supercars, Super Tourers, Toyota Racing and various individual race teams. From the outset, these relationships showed key sponsors – predominantly large corporates – the high quality merchandise that could be aligned to their uniform and promotional requirements. Rik’s previous apparel experience – which included establishing and running Russell Athletic in New
Zealand from 1993 to 2001 and holding licence agreements with Super League, AFL, NBA, NHL, NCAA, NFL and both Counties Manukau and North Harbour Rugby – were strong credentials as he embarked on his new direction. It also allowed him to further his motorsport passion. With ABD specialising in customdesigned, custom-made apparel and merchandise, using high end offshore factories, many multinational companies were attracted as customers. Subsequently, ABD now distributes to New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, USA, Italy, Israel and the United Kingdom.
The company’s design, production and quality control processes are extremely detailed so Rik and wife Crystal have a team who are fluent in several languages and who have spent many years specialising in their areas of expertise.
As a company we believe in old school values of honesty and integrity and always strive to deliver the best possible product to fit customers’ budgets.”
“While we deal with some very large corporate customers, we pride ourselves on our local service based around a great team of local people. What’s more, we can still supply the smaller runs for small to medium business’ and sports teams needing uniforms and merchandise,” Rik says. But it is the motorsport related industry that has Rik running on all six cylinders (or should that be eight). ABD’s involvement with New Zealand’s only Supercar event
began more than 12 years ago and during that time Rik has seen the race move from Pukekohe to Hamilton and back to Pukekohe. “For most of this period ITM has been the major sponsor and its support office and individual stores do an amazing job in maximising sponsorship through merchandise and promotions,” he says. “As a company we believe in old school values of honesty and integrity and always strive to deliver the best possible product to fit customers’ budgets. “The vast majority of ABD’s customers started with them in the first couple of years of business and their referrals are the best advertising tools you could ask for. ABD in Australia, and here in East Tamaki, are proud to be associated with ITM and, of course, the Supercar series. In particular, we are all looking forward to the early November meet at Pukekohe.”

With so many players coming and going from Super Rugby, it’s easy to forget some of the rugby heroes who once graced Auckland’s garden of Eden. JON RAWLINSON recently encountered one such giant who may have given the game away, but remains a genuine hero.
Blues steel(er) Jim Coe
While big Jim Coe may have donned the black, red and white of the Counties Manukau Steelers more than 100 times during his career, the lock-solid second rower was also one of the first ‘Blues brothers’. So, where is he now? It turns out Jim has discovered that, although life’s a beach, saving lives is no picnic! “When people refer to surf lifesaving as a sport, I cringe a little bit. First and foremost it’s an essential emergency service and when there’s an emergency it’s all hands on deck,” the Karioitahi Surf Club president says. “That said, the sport aspect is a great recruitment tool. Like rugby, surf lifesaving is very much a team game; as an individual, you get out what you put in. And, with any sport, my philosophy is that you’re not there to participate, you’re there to win.” A lifeguard since the age of 14, it’s long been Jim’s job to ensure Aucklanders who flock to his piece of coast don’t end up at home with Davey Jones. In addition to playing for the Blues in 1997, Jim also represented NZ Maori more than 20 times. If the Mitre 10 Cup (the NPC in old money) is rugby’s backbone, then it’s men like him who form its vertebrae. “I came through the same era as old Pine Tree [Meads]. It was hard, physical rugby. There was plenty of mud and no cameras around. You stood there, toe to toe with your opposite, and basically beat the shit out of each other until someone gave in!” he grins. Although the sun set on his playing days as it rose on rugby professionalism, Jim did manage to reap some financial reward. “Playing for the Blues gave me enough money to buy a boat. I was also working [at Glenbrook Steel Mill] so it made for some long days. It’s always nice to have money, but www.eastlife.co.nz

it was never about that for me; I just played rugby for the love of it. “I had offers to play overseas but I enjoyed my summertime here (and my surf lifesaving) so much that I wasn’t keen to swap it for another six months a year of being covered in shit!” These days Jim can still find himself in the proverbial – managing his family’s farm – but it’s when visitors to his beach find themselves in difficulty that he best not be caught without a paddle! “I’m still actively patrolling. Last
year, I did about 125 hours and performed rescues. There’s always competition with the younger ones keen to beat the old fulla!”
motorbikes on the beach. Those incidents together really stretched our services and put our skills into practice.”
Early this year, Jim’s team (including the old fullas) were pushed to their limit when a “perfect storm” brewed at Karioitahi.
Fortunately, the team rose to the challenge, later earning the club the Northern Region ‘Rescue of the Year’ award.
“A woman was swimming and got into difficulty [and] we also had a search for two others – we weren’t certain if they were on land or in the water,” he recalls. “And, if that wasn’t enough, we then had a head-on collision between two
“Winning games was great because it meant all that training resulted in points on the board. This type of situation was similar; our training resulted in three or four families ending up with their loved ones coming home, so you could say that was a win for us too.” eastlife | november 2017 |

discover something new about carwashing T.J’s CarWash Botany has just installed the very latest in automatic carwash machines – the Supremo Autowashe!
Broken, English Although Bill English may feel a little broken by the outcome of coalition talks, our new PM appears set to build on alliances forged at the negotiating table.
They include:
• Pre blast – any abrasive material is blasted off the car, eliminating the risk of surface damage. You could say, “we wash your car before we wash your car.” • Sensofil Plus brush material. A first in New Zealand this produces a high quality wash result without surface damage. Furthermore, as the machine is washing your car, the brushes are also being washed. We use lots of water to keep things clean during the wash process.
46 | eastlife | november 2017 ADVERTORIAL
We know Jacs Winning isn’t everything (or practically anything) when it comes to an election if one doesn’t Win-ston it too! Or, as one reader commented: ‘New Zealand – a country where we all get to vote but it’s your granddad who picks the winner’! Now that we have a new Prime Minister, our Mind our English column (which reflects on releases from the PM’s office) will seek to discover how well... We Know Jacs.
Made in Germany by Christ Wash Systems, the world’s leading carwash makers, it’s been named Supremo Autowashe for not one but four very good reasons – it has four main features not available on any carwash machine in New Zealand.
• Four jointed vertical brushes which contour to the shape of your car delivering far more contact with the surface and producing a superior wash result. All that touches your car is the tips of the Sensofil Plus brush material reducing pressure points on corner areas. A single axil brush on normal automatic machines cannot achieve this. Twice the wash for the same money!
GAME OF THRONES: Can ‘queen Jacs’ aspire to NZ’s political pantheon with a legacy to match those of (from left) ‘Key-sar’, ‘Passing Bill’ and the colossal ‘Wins-some’? Cartoon Antonio Parsons
• Contour directional drying – another newbie in New Zealand. The specially designed drying agent delivers a result like you have never seen before. There lots more, too. Supremo wash option applies a high p.h. detergent product to car wheels and lower panels dealing to that heavy road grime and brake pad build up. While some modern wheel shapes are hard to clean, the isolating wheel brushes do a first class job. All this can be activated via cash, debit or credit card from the driver’s seat – best value, best result. The new (primarily Labour) ministerial list also features four from NZ First (Mr Peters as Deputy PM) while the Greens have three ministers outside of Cabinet. “Across the board these members have the experience, expertise and drive I want in our team so we can make the right decisions to tackle the challenges our country faces,” Ms Ardern announced recently. She specifically referenced the health system, healthy homes, child poverty, homelessness, cleaner rivers, tackling climate change, regional development, immigration and a crack down on foreign property speculators as areas of priority. “The majority of people voted for change to the status quo and that’s why we are committed to taking a new approach to how our country is governed and how the economy is managed. This will be a government of action. We will be
determined and focused on what needs to change to make life better for all New Zealanders.”
Who Trumped? If the sound of Gabriel’s trumpet is a sure fire sign of judgment day, then we have to wonder whether Jacinda’s call from a Trump has changed her judgment of the US president. “The President was genuinely interested in our election, and spoke about the coverage it had received in Washington DC,” she confirmed – dare we suggest that at least the Russians weren’t as interested as Donald in our election as they were in his? “I look forward to carrying on talks around our role in the Asia Pacific region, and our commitment to a strong relationship with the United States,” Ms Ardern continued. Left-of-centre, professional politician, Ms Ardern, and the, well, who knows what self-proclaimed amateur, The Donald, may find they have some things in common as their relationship continues; after all, neither ascended to power on the back of winning the popular vote, at least! www.eastlife.co.nz
Hit the highway on a Honda can also find their dream bike at Botany Honda.
We all like to get away from it all during summer. But sitting in a hot car, sizzling in an inevitable traffic jam on the notorious Southern Motorway certainly isn’t Danny Evans’ idea of an escape from the rat race.
“If you’re looking for a more retro style street bike, the CB1100RS is a great choice. It’s reminiscent of ‘70s’cycle style but, thanks to modern engineering, it’s much easier to handle.”
“Nothing compares to the freedom of the open road, but before you can experience that, first you need to get ahead of the traffic!” the Botany Honda owner says. “Once you do, though, there’s no better way to experience a Kiwi summer than from a bike.” Making the right choice when it comes to what to ride isn’t always straight forward, so Danny and team are on hand to help. “It really comes down to individual preference and the experience of the rider, of course,” he explains. “If your style is more laid back, then a CMX500 Rebel (learner legal) or the sleek VTX1300 Fury could be for you.
If a brand new, cutting edge ride is just a little too much for the wallet to handle, then maybe one of Botany Honda’s used models would fit the bill.”
Take a cruise on a CMX Rebel this summer, available now from Botany Honda. “Both these bikes are cruiser style, which means they’re perfectly suited to people who really want to take their time in heading wherever the road leads.
something like the VFR1200 Crosstourer would be more suitable – a very comfortable ride with big padded seats and heated grips.”

Rapid success in land of the rising sun Going with the flow might seem like a good idea but attempt that when riding the rapids and you could find yourself up a certain creek with no means of propulsion! Fortunately, one particular Kiwi crew recently managed to keep their cool while on a mission to rock the boat, as JON RAWLINSON explains. They may not come home to thousands of adoring fans at the airport but the New Zealand Women’s Open Rafting Team deserves such a warm welcome. Recently back from the biennial International Rafting Federation’s World Rafting Championship (WRC) in Japan, former East Auckland local, Sarah Christie, is pleased to be sporting silver. “I feel we competed well, fair and hard. I’m content with the result and think it reflects how the championships went,” she says. “Obviously, like every other team there, we wanted to win the coveted world title, but we’re happy with how our team performed and the overall result.” This year’s competition was tough as usual, she adds, and even saw the hopes of reigning champs (the
48 | eastlife | november 2017
Czech Republic) sink as they failed to place. Sarah’s team claimed second overall in the six-woman championship, securing gold in the Sprint event, silver in the Downriver section and bronze in Slalom along the way. Home river contenders, Japan, took out top honours. “There is always a definite advantage having the worlds in your own country [but] they are a classy crew who consistently place in the top three at worlds.” Consistency is in no short supply for the Kiwi team either; they’ve placed in the top three at every such event since 1999. After claiming a win at home in 2013, the team also finished second overall in Indonesia, 2015. I ask the ex Maclean’s College pupil
NZ OPEN WOMEN: (from left) Anne Cairns, Sarah Christie, Kelly Wood, Corrina Gage, Nikki Kelly, Sarah Uhl & Nikki Whitehead. whether she’s a bit sick of second place. “It’s not an issue of ‘getting sick’ of second!” she exclaims. “We are competing against top athletes from all over the world who want exactly the same thing; each river and competition is different. We go to worlds to compete to the best of our ability. But yes, we would love to step back up on the top of the podium soon.”
Whether Sarah and her teammates will ride Australia’s Tully River back to the top at the next worlds won’t be known until 2019, but readers can bank on the fact that these keen sportswomen will make every effort to do so.
