The team can stand proud after EastLife was named Best All Round Lifestyle Magazine with its sister publication Rural Living, being highly commended. Ironically, EastLife was then runner up to Rural Living in the associate category for the Frank Veale Memorial Award for the Most Improved Newspaper. Wonderfully, senior writer, Jon Rawlinson was runner up, Best Senior Sports Journalist, narrowly missing out to Daniel Silverton from sister publication, Howick and Pakuranga Times. EastLife junior writer, Natalie Brittan was runner up, Best Junior Feature/ Lifestyle Journalist Award and Wayne Martin, representing EastLife, was runner up, Best Feature Lifestyle Photographer. I applaud their efforts and commitment. Yes, I can definitely say that was

But with that all done and dusted, I’m now happy to report that this month’s EastLife has some super prizes to be bagged, a wealth of reading for these indoor days, and a look at some chic winter fashions.
Finally, just as EastLife was going to print, we received the very sad news that well-known local resident, Sylvia Jones, a life and founding member of the Pakuranga Choral Society, president of Phoenix Club, which raises funds to benefit hospices in Auckland and the oncology unit at Auckland Hospital and a member of Probus, passed away after a short illness.

the high of the month but, then, on my return, I had to turn down a last minute trip to Malaysia. Because it meant flying off on the Monday of Queen’s Birthday (when I was booked to be in Rotorua), I just couldn’t manage it. So, how unlucky is that? But really, nothing could quell my enthusiasm after an invigorating conference in Queenstown where community newspapers showed they were doing a great job.

with
Winston Peters
When we look back and weigh everything he’s done, will we realise Winston’s the one? While New Zealanders may be divided as to whether Mr Peters is the one to lead us, one thing’s for sure… he certainly values New Zealand First. This month, we put some questions (and even received some answers!) to the controversial Northland (and one-time Hunua) MP.
Did your role as Hunua MP help shape you as a politician? I was fortunate to be able to represent the people of Hunua which, back then, was a very marginal electorate. I learned much from the experience of an electorate which comprised threequarters of Otara with parts of Howick and a significant farming area. Now that you’re representing the people of Northland, will your focus shift from New Zealand generally? The history of New Zealand political representation has been through a candidate being elected in an electorate seat, so the focus for MPs has always been on the seat and the wider, national picture. While, more recently, we’ve moved to both electorate and list representation, the New Zealand First list MPs all do their utmost to represent their regions and maintain electorate offices. My election in Northland has not changed that focus. Unfortunately, not all parties follow our example. Northlanders have been let down by both electorate and list MPs of the National Party. The neglect has been astounding, even the Prime Minister admits that. With Northland being a largely rural region, what specific plans do you have to bolster the agricultural and horticultural sectors there? Northland has huge potential, with a climate that is suitable to grow almost anything. There are many people (in Northland and outside) who have ideas to take the agricultural and horticultural sectors forward. New Zealanders are innovative, but the monetary and financial settings of governments over the last three decades have seriously hindered, rather than helped, them. I hope, as an MP, to ensure they can progress their ideas as quickly and as easily as possible. It is exciting that, since the election, we are getting calls from people who have ideas and see opportunities for Northland to grow. Recently we had a call about trials for growing large yams – that’s just one example. Look at the Hikurangi farmer who is developing a gas project
6 | eastlife | june 2015
to turn effluent into biogas energy; that’s the kind of innovation that can be fostered through support from various government agencies. Do you think New Zealand First has the support of farmers in Northland and nationwide? New Zealand First has always been supportive of farmers and during the by-election campaign there were certainly plenty of handshakes for us! It is the rural people who produce the bulk of our exports and we want more of that wealth returned to the regions and provincial industries. We are concerned about the escalating cost of land, which is pricing some keen, young Kiwis out of a start on the land. We believe overseas ownership is one of the main causes of this. All over the world, countries are recognising the need to protect land ownership for their present and future citizens; why don’t we? New Zealand First has recently put forward a bill to get mediation in place for farmers who face receivership as dairy prices drop and farm borrowing is so high. Rural people understand that improving the economy brings job creation and better livelihoods for all. How important is it that rural industries are strong in rural regions such as Northland and Hunua? All rural industries must have the infrastructure and services that urban industry takes for granted. There were promises made during the by-election on roading, bridges, faster broadband and wider cell phone coverage – we expect National to deliver on all of these. These are exactly what rural industry needs to stay competitive. Take sawmills (for example) in Northland. They need more spending on roads so www.eastlife.co.nz
‘
Auckland is choking from haphazard, random, unfocused and unplanned development alongside highly inflated growth. The urban population is small against huge urban sprawl on a treadmill seemingly going nowhere fast. That goes for real wealth or traffic speeds.”
logging trucks can get through in all weather. Many sawmills have closed because there has not been enough focus on helping rural industries that add value. Instead, logs have been piled up on our wharves and been shipped offshore, with little value added. The result has been a huge loss of production and jobs in the regions. Parts of rural Auckland (franklin in particular) are being urbanised to cope with an expanding population. could parts of southern northland see the same fate? Auckland is choking from haphazard, random, unfocused and unplanned development alongside highly inflated growth. The urban population is small against huge urban sprawl on a treadmill seemingly going nowhere fast. That goes for real wealth or traffic speeds. It’s always a balancing act between land needed for housing and land for production. Unfortunately, farmland is often sold up when profits from hard work on the farm are nowhere near as good as accepting the dollars a developer offers when demand is way in excess of supply. It is not as though that demand is natural www.eastlife.co.nz
Winston Peters with New Zealand First caucus following the 2014 general election. growth; it’s inflated growth caused by high immigration and offshore, nonresident buying. Gradually, Aucklanders are learning just what a fool’s game this is. However, when New Zealand First was putting this out many years ago, the inevitable response was to shoot the messenger whilst ignoring the inevitable message. The biggest opponents of our message of instability in land and house availability are now headlining their concerns, which their past stupidity and support for helped bring about. That’s why we have distinct plans so there will be realistic designation between urban and rural areas. The optimum outcome would be housing development on present urban land and the least productive land while keeping highly fertile land for farming and other rural industries. where do you stand on the flag debate? New Zealand First believes the first referendum question should be: Do you want to change the flag? New Zealanders are not being given that choice as the first question [in the first referendum] is about what design we want the flag to be; we believe everyone who does not want a change should write Keep our Flag or KOF on the referendum paper. This will be an informal vote. There could well be more informal votes than others. Such a vote would not make a second referendum credible
[regarding which design, including the current flag, we would prefer]. Our Facebook posting on the flag has gained huge support. could winston Peters be compared to winston churchill? how about to richard nixon? if not, which politician throughout history do you think you’re most similar to and why? Winston Churchill, but only to the extent that many things I warned my country about have sadly come to pass. When Churchill finally became Prime Minister after the outbreak of the Second World War, one of his first expressed hopes was that it was not too late. In all other respects I don’t think any of us can say we are similar to another in character. Any chance you’ll ever stand again in hunua or are you expecting to ‘fight them on the paddocks and never surrender’ northland? We will defend what we have won. realistically, do you think new Zealand first can upset the Greens to become our legitimate third party? We plan to upset the present political imbalance. There has been much debate about the need for sound succession plans for farmers. how sound is new Zealand first’s plans for succession of leadership? New Zealand First has a caucus of capable, intelligent and aspiring
MPs, but there is no talk of any of us retiring at present. you were once captain of Auckland Maori and trialled for nZ Maori in rugby as well. considering this, and Mr Key’s propensity to be seen at All Blacks’ matches, which party would win a world cup of rugby/politics? New Zealand First, because we have played at a higher level. if you could grow any plant or raise any animal imaginable, what and why? The moa. Having the biggest bird in recent centuries would be (excuse the pun) a real feather in our nation’s cap! if you could be PM for one day, what would you do first and why? Change the Reserve Bank so our currency settings reflect our utter dependency on being an export (and not an import) nation. That would cause remaining policies to change in line with where real wealth for New Zealand comes from and get us back to being a high per person, per income nation and real wealth creators whilst giving everyone a fair go. if you could invite any three people to dinner, living or dead, who and why? Winston Churchill, for his wisdom, courage and character; Albert Schweitzer for his humanity; Elizabeth I, who had more real ability than any man of her era. eastlife | june 2015 |

Free-styling Helen channels talents in twIN directions Every journalist loves a scoop and TVNZ reporter Helen Castles has enjoyed her fair share. However, it is more than a stroke of luck that her ‘other career’ as a Special Olympics swimming coach has provided her with many inside stories, which may not always make headlines, but are great news for her students, as HELEN PERRY discovered. Helen Castles arrives at our interview straight from a TVNZ training session hopeful there’ll be no photographs today. She looks beautiful – we could have done the photos. Instead we organise to do them at Lloyd Elsmore pool when she and her Special Olympics Howick-Pakuranga swim students are together – “they’ll love that, they’ll be really excited,” she smiles. Animated by the prospect, Helen delightedly tells me her ‘special swimmers’ will be ecstatic that they might be in ‘the paper’! In fact, her whole face lights up when she talks of her ‘amazing’ pupils, their consistently happy demeanour and their desire to do well. “Win or lose they just love competing and are so excited just finishing a race. Even if last, you’d think they had won. Training and competing gives them such a sense of purpose.” Helen has coached with the team for the past five years, but her first association with Special Olympics goes back many years. “My sister and I were competitive swimmers when young and my first swim coach was long distance swimmer, Sandra Blewett. At the time, Sandra was very involved with Special Olympics and, as her students, we sometimes went along to provide support,” she explains. “I was impressed then, so five years ago, with family demands easing, I decided I wanted to give some kind of support again. I phoned Special Olympics Howick-Pakuranga and I’ve been coaching there ever since.” Although, this year, Monique Irvine is the only Howick-Pakuranga swimmer who will be heading to the LA2015 Games (July 25-August 2), Helen is confident she will not only do well at her first off-shore international competition, but will be a great ambassador for New Zealand. “It’s not always about being the fastest or the strongest; Monique will be in competition with people of

Helen with her twin boys Jayden, left, and Xavier. Right, with swim students. similar ability and, for them, it will be about pride of competing, going the distance and achieving the finish line.
“If he does the Rangitoto swim next year, Jayden is keen to swim with him. I might too!”
“However, she has upped her training and because she has competed previously in athletics, she is set on making an impact.”
Chatting over pizza and a wine, Helen continues to amaze me with her apparent ease in coping with a less than conventional career path.
Despite juggling her journalism career with her coaching passion, Helen is also mother to 11-year-old twins, Jayden and Xavier; they too are progressing into competitive swimming.
There’s not many who could strike out for the Bahamas as a teenager, give birth to twins when only 20 years old – “they were such easy babies. Really, it wasn’t at all stressful”, – work various part-time jobs to fund her studies (“And to keep from becoming bored!”) as well as coach Special Olympics, all while workding towards her goal of reporting for television news!
For this reason, Helen knows well what it’s like to be an early riser, up before dawn for training sessions. “I coach the Special Olympics swimmers just one night a week but I’m up at 5.00am three times a week to get the boys to training,” she says. Beyond this, Helen’s dad, Pat Castles, is also a keen swimmer, and recently took part (for the 20th time!) in the 4.6km swim from Rangitoto to St Heliers Bay. “Dad always could swim, but he was a smoker and it was only when my sister, Claire, and I were swimming that he gave up the cigarettes and took lessons to improve his breathing. Before we knew it, he’d joined a Masters team and was racing. These days he even helps me with coaching from time to time.
As we talk, this self-effacing young woman continues to show warmth and passion for the role of Special Olympics in the community. She again talks of the joy and laughter her students bring to her life. “They have fun; we all have fun; everyone is happy and their exuberance is heart-warming. Win or lose, they are always elated.” Inspired by the commitment of her students, nevertheless Helen brushes aside any suggestion that she is responsible for their dreams coming true. “I love helping them and it’s a thrill
‘
And the best part is seeing the medals being dished out. Everyone gets so excited; it really is the most rewarding part of coaching. In fact, you could say I’m the selfish one; I sometimes think I get more from my pupils than they get from me!”
to see them competing, but the real hard work of fostering their talent is done by their families who are so supportive and willing. “And the best part is seeing the medals being dished out. Everyone gets so excited; it really is the most rewarding part of coaching. In fact, you could say I’m the selfish one; I sometimes think I get more from my pupils than they get from me!” On that inspirational note, it’s time to depart although we do toy with the idea of another wine! Sadly we are both driving, so another day perhaps. www.eastlife.co.nz
Relaying flip side of Helen Castles The Special Olympics can rely on making headlines at least every four years, but one swim coach for this organisation’s unique athletes, Helen Castles, makes the news most nights of the week! In her ‘other life’ as a TVNZ reporter, Helen Castles’ career path took her from schoolgirl dreaming to print, then radio and finally to her original objective, television reporting. Born and raised locally, Helen attended Elm Park Primary, Farm Cove Intermediate and Macleans College where her favourite subjects were:“English and media studies, of course!” Intent, even then, on a journalism career she dived into a part-time www.eastlife.co.nz
news writing course at Auckland University of Technology while still at school. But Helen’s TV ambitions were interrupted when, at 17, she met trainee pilot, Phil Boughey. “When Phil’s work took him to the Bahamas, I went too and I fell pregnant with the twins [Jayden and Xavier) when I was 20. We came back to New Zealand just before they were born.” Back in Auckland Helen didn’t let motherhood deter her study aspirations. “I was accepted for the communications degree course at Manukau Institute of Technology and, even when Phil’s job took us to Northland, I was able to fly down with the children, leaving them with my mum while I attended lectures.”
When the twins were three, Helen scooped a job with the Northern News then a year later moved on to the Northern Advocate.
says she has a strong network of contacts in the north and still travels there when required – “there’s never a shortage of news.”
“I enjoyed print, but I had my heart set on television. The route to TV is often through radio, so when given the chance to join Radio Live, with More FM, I grabbed it. I had four great years there covering mostly Northland before finally striking gold with TVNZ where I am also covering Northland for TV ONE news.
But away from the newsroom, she is still a busy mum, heavily involved in her boys’ swim activities whilst also devoted to her coaching role with Special Olympics Howick-Pakuranga.
“I’ve been with them for three years now and love it. The job takes me all over the place, every day is different and I meet all sorts of people. I couldn’t be happier.” Although based in Auckland, Helen
And she couldn’t have been more thrilled when pupil Monique Irvine, who will attend the LA2015 Games, won the Disabled Athlete Award at the Howick Sports Awards last month. Joanna Lee Richards and Laurinne Laing also won Service to Sport awards for their contribution to Special Olympics Howick-Pakuranga. eastlife | june 2015 |

Back from the front line After last-minute advice gave AARON WHYTE a place at the 100-year commemoration of the First World War’s ill-fated Gallipoli campaign in Turkey, the Pakuranga local returned humbled by the courage and sacrifice made by the ANZACs – Australian and New Zealand soldiers, many just lads still in their teens. Here he talks of the moving experience. Standing at the commemoration site near Anzac Cove in the hours leading up to the dawn service, a barrage of emotions and curiosities came over me. I understood the significance of the occasion, and had studied the tragic facts of the Gallipoli campaign, but I was unsure as to how I would respond to being there in person. As I walked along the picturesque coastline, the rugged and unforgiving terrain that would have greeted the soldiers as they landed on the beach that fateful morning in 1915, was immediately apparent. The narrow beach of Anzac Cove quickly gave way to the steep hillside, where troops were commanded to climb at great cost. I couldn’t help wondering if the soldiers knew their objective was doomed from the outset. The overnight camp out allowed all of us there the opportunity to get a sense of how harsh this environment might have been for the troops.
The evening was clear and mostly calm with only a light sea breeze. We had all come prepared for singledigit temperatures with thermals, jackets and sleeping bags made of the latest materials, yet there were still plenty of people commenting on how cold it was. How did those brave soldiers cope when a lack of supplies left them unprepared for the temperatures that see-sawed from hot days to bitterly cold nights, particularly later in the campaign as winter bore down on them? With 10,500 people in attendance to pay their respects this year, there was a real feeling of camaraderie amongst us. As the site filled up throughout the evening those that had been sleeping were happy to make room for those arriving and it was fantastic to talk with several people to find out their reasons for making the journey and what it meant to be here. As someone who does not have family links to Gallipoli and the ANZACs, it was a privilege to share the occasion with so many descendants. Shortly before the dawn service began at 5.30am, the mini documentaries which had shown during the night finished and it became eerily silent with equal parts contemplation and anticipation. The service itself evoked mixed emotions.
www.eastlife.co.nz
Above: Ceromony preparations at Anzac Cove. Below: Aaron Whyte visiting one of the cemeteries overlooking Anzac Cove. There were plenty of tears shed for those who fought at Gallipoli during those nine months with so many of them paying the ultimate sacrifice for King and the country we are lucky to call home today. But I also felt extremely proud to be there, remembering their bravery and perseverance despite the obstacles that lay in front of them. At the conclusion of the dawn service, daylight showed the capacity crowd for the first time. Once again it was a tearful moment with the realisation that every one of us represented a fallen ANZAC soldier who never left Gallipoli. With several hours until the New Zealand service at Chunuk Bair, I took the opportunity to visit many of the cemeteries on the peninsula. All gravestones continue to be dutifully
maintained by the Turkish people, as if they were their own fathers, husbands or brothers. Stopping to read as many inscriptions as possible, it was heart-breaking to see the majority were in their late teens and early twenties. Whether they enlisted as a sense of duty, to serve alongside brothers and mates, or to see the world beyond New Zealand, it was a situation that my generation would find extremely difficult to comprehend if placed in similar circumstances. These two, short days were truly a oncein a lifetime experience, that I will remember for decades to come. The memories will be shared with family and friends. If the opportunity arises for any readers to visit the Gallipoli peninsula, I would highly recommend it – you won’t come away unmoved and you will be filled with respect and admiration for these young, fallen soldiers.

Going Sydney-side Undoubtedly, many locals will indulge in a quick trip to Australia over winter and Sydney is a likely destination. Shopping may well be the catalyst but there is more to Sydney than its fabulous malls. During a recent six-day sojourn in the New South Wales capital, HELEN PERRY discovered some great foodie hot spots.
ThE lAGOOn, wOllOnGOnG Head down the South Coast for an hour and you’ll come to Wollongong, a lovely seaside city in the Illawarra region. It’s name is said to mean ‘seas of the south’ in the Aboriginal language while other suggested meanings include ‘great feast of fish’, ‘hard ground near water’, ‘song of the sea’ and ‘sound of the waves’, all of which give an inkling to its location. A favourite holiday spot with Sydney locals and tourists, there are countless activities to keep visitors happy but one place that is sure to delight foodies is The Lagoon, winner of numerous restaurant awards. Diners here enjoy an amazing array of fresh seafood including king prawns, lobster, Queensland mud crabs, Sydney rock oysters, local fish and scampi from the deep oceans of Western Australian, as well as quality grain-fed beef and poultry. And just to tempt the tastebuds contemplate these – entree: seared jumbo North Atlantic scallops with cauliflower puree, raspberry infused balsamic and crispy prosciutto; main: grilled Moreton Bay bugs served with rice and a chilli, ginger or garlic cream sauce.

Located on level five in the Westfield Mall, heart of Sydney, this upbeat circular restaurant and bar surrounded by glass is a great place to lunch. With its emphasis on seafood – hot and cold – plus delicious salads, there’s plenty to please.
Take a leisurely drive out to this rustic cottage cafe, situated in leafy Bilpin, gateway to the Blue Mountains. But book first! It’s open for lunch Friday to Monday and dinner Friday to Sunday and it’s the in place to go.
Last but not least – The Gewurzhaus. Not a restaurant but home to the most amazing range of fragrant spices and herbs, salts, peppers and sugars.
Try the $19.50 tasting plate which is likely to offer Albacore tuna, verjuicepoached kingfish, prawn cocktail and roasted king salmon with French breads. Alternatively check out the barramundi – crumbed, grilled or beer-battered – served with salad and crispy fries – all good stuff. Cod & Co is just the place to rest weary feet and revitalise after a morning of shopping.
Always booked out, once sampled, it’s easy to see why. Roaring, double-sided fire on cooler days, character decor with exposed timber and corrugated iron, deck for sunny days and, most importantly, a contemporary and innovative menu to die for. Local ciders, beer on tap and a great local wine list add to the flavour. Yes, the food here is exceptionally good, the ambience tranquil and the drive most enjoyable!
Located in the historic Strand arcade in the heart of Sydney, this shop, which is a chef’s delight, opened in 2010, and invites shoppers to lift the lid and inhale the abundance of exotic aromas. But be careful – some are highly aromatic and may get up your nose! Joking aside, visitors really will discover intriguing spice and herb blends representing many different cuisine styles and suitable for virtually every type of dish. The team there mixes and mills more than 100 unique, quality blends and also stocks a selection of new and vintage kitchen wares. Additionally, cooking classes make this a must-visit destination for foodies and cooks.

Family holiday goes full cycle ‘ A New Year’s resolution to make 2015 the year to explore New Zealand ahead of overseas holidays has seen the Ellis family of Howick plan a series of local getaways. Here SARAH ELLIS recounts her delight at discovering the attributes of Waihi and the Karangahake Gorge.
Waihi is no longer ‘that place’ travellers drive through on their way to Tauranga or another Bay of Plenty town. It is a ‘bona fide’ tourist destination offering a blend of history, natural beauty and beaches. Whilst we had scoped out and planned our cycling adventure through the Karangahake Gorge and Cycle Trail, we had no idea of other
attractions we were to encounter in and around this historical town. The Cycle Trail follows the old railway tracks between Paeroa and Waihi for approximately 40km, (or 80km round trip). However, for novice and family riders there is a shorter trail which can be enjoyed without compromising the experience and breath-taking scenery. We booked and hired our bikes from Waihi Bike Hire and opted to cycle 1km to the Goldfields Waihi Train Station and then take the 6km train ride out to Waikino. From there we mounted our bikes and cycled the gentle 8km trail to The Gorge. On arrival we took some stunning photos of the imposing and rugged
Being Welsh, I have seen many mining displays, and been down some actual coal mines, but I have never seen such a creative and informative exhibition as this. The friendly staff enthusiastically showed off this impressive centre with its interactive displays and holographic ghost theatre.
Gorge before embarking on the somewhat precarious ride through the old 1km tunnel. It was dark and cold, but very exciting for the kids. Tip: take a couple of torches to see your way through. Making it through the dark tunnel we picnicked on the other side and rested our legs before heading all the way back to Waihi. In total we rode approximately 24km, but, timed right, it is possible to take the train back from Waikino, saving the extra 6km of biking – check the website and timetable on line – waihirail.co.nz.
the moderately fit, and even though we are not really a biking family we managed reasonably comfortably. However, if a little unfit, be sure to take plenty of breaks, food and water and you should enjoy it without too much strain. Don’t forget your camera as there are many photo opportunities including old rusted gold mining equipment, which is a continuous reminder of the area’s famous and tough past. The following day we took it pretty easy with a leisurely stroll around Waihi taking in the gorgeous little statues that have been erected to celebrate children. It wasn’t hard to find a quirky café for lunch as there appeared to be as many cafes in Waihi as there are in Howick! My kind of place! What’s more I understand there is a fabulous restaurant, The Falls Retreat, located along the Hauraki Rail Cycleway opposite Owharoa Falls which has a great reputation. We missed out on this occasion but next time! Before heading back to Howick and thinking that we had pretty

much covered Waihi apart from viewing the open cast mine for which the town is famous, we had to think again, as we came across the new Gold Discovery Centre, directly opposite the mine. The centre opened last year after the local community realised it needed to preserve the town’s gold mining history for future generations. Now, being Welsh, I have seen many mining displays, and been down some actual coal mines, but I have never seen such a creative and informative exhibition as this. off this impressive centre with its interactive displays and holographic ghost theatre. It was well worth the entry fee and the kids loved it, especially learning how to play ‘two up’. The centre also takes tours around the Martha Mine so visitors can actually get inside the fence to the mine. World class! www.eastlife.co.nz
Reluctantly leaving Waihi for the trip home, and wishing we’d also had time to explore the shoreline at Waihi Beach where we stayed (heavy rain precluded any beachcombing), we couldn’t help but stop again at the Karangahake Gorge and walk across the suspension bridge just to take in the extraordinary scenery once more – simply stunning. On our leisurely drive back to Auckland we also stopped at ‘The World Famous in New Zealand’ Paeroa, where, naturally, we took photos of the giant L&P bottle and
also perused the antique shops for retro treasures. Then we came across The Pancake Shop where we had the largest pancakes ever – who knew you could do so much with the humble pancake? The Eggs Benny pancakes were amazing! Our family mission this year has been to have fantastic experiences and adventures in our own country. Waihi, with it’s historical past, cycle track and stunning environs, ticked all the boxes. eastlife | june 2015 |

Rats make great pets! Contrary to the stereotype that Hollywood has unfairly pushed onto ALL rats, domesticated rats are clean, extremely smart, and very social toward humans making them one of the best ‘pocket pets’ around! Rats have become popular for young children seeking the companionship of a dog but who are unable – as I was – to convince Mum that they will do ALL of the work. With rats, kids can take on nearly all of the care and work themselves! So here’s a bit of information to hopefully equip you when the pleading starts. • Company: Rats should always be kept in same-sex groups of two or more—this means that when your little one asks for one rat, this automatically means at least two. Rats that live on their own are often more stressed, more prone to disease, and more likely to develop behavioural issues. On the up side, caring for two rats is no more work than caring for one! Keep in mind, though, that pet rats should come from a breeder who has handled them regularly since birth. • Housing: A rat cage should be a minimum of 75L capacity for 1-2 rats. A large, wire bird cage makes
excellent accommodation for rats as it provides ideal ventilation, climbing opportunities, and great flexibility for set-up and ‘decoration’. The bedding in a rat house should NOT be cedar or pine shavings. In fact, stay away from any soft woods. Research has shown that the phenols in cedar and pine, which make them smell nice, can actually cause respiratory difficulties as well as liver and kidney damage. Aspen shavings are considered the safest. • Food: One of the best commercial foods you can buy for your rat, aside from Lab Blocks, is Nutro Natural Choice Lite dog food! Seed mixes should be fed only as a supplement for rats. And as a fun treat try blueberries, carrots, broccoli, or cooked pasta (hold the sauce!)! So, push the image of city sewer rats from your mind and consider that pet rats can provide your children with hours of companionship and help to teach them responsibility with only mild parental involvement. Doesn’t sound so bad when you put it that way, does it?

Good sports write turn Whatever happened to our heroes? Well, if we take a leaf out of David Riley’s books, we’ll find they’re closer than we think! To help stop young boys (in particular) falling behind in the literacy statistics, the teacher from nearby Tangaroa College penned a series of books. He says inspiration struck soon after the Kiwis won the 2008 Rugby League World Cup. “My students wanted to read about the players, but there was nothing suited to their age group. As a teacher, I knew how valuable material that could interest them was. So I decided to share some of the behindthe-scenes stories of inspirational achievers in sport,” he says. Since then, David has published five books featuring sportspeople with local connections. Two (Samoan Heroes and We Are the Rock) are collections of shorter profiles – featuring the likes of Frank Bunce, Tana Umaga and David Tua – while the others (Off Loading with Sonny Bill Williams, Jammin’ with Steven
‘
Adams, and Steppin’ with Benji Marshall) focus on individual sports stars. Because his subjects are wellknown, and the example they set, so significant, the stories of Sonny, Benji, Steven and others have been well received. “The books are designed to inspire young people. I talk about challenges sportspeople have faced, how they overcame them, and how (sometimes) they failed. I don’t look at ‘failures’ in sensationalising ways – such as with SBW’s conviction for drunk driving – instead I try to show how these athletes learnt from their experiences.” By taking his subjects out of the media spotlight, and portraying them using language, younger readers appreciate the valuable life lessons that are on offer. “It’s good for them to learn how these achievers are just normal
people who have dreams and challenges, successes and failures. “I try to find links between the sportspeople and young readers – such as how SBW carries a notebook into meetings, is an avid notetaker and how he likes to read. These are all things Sonny didn’t do so much when growing up, but he knows their importance now,” David says. Although David’s books are available through schools and libraries, they can also be purchased at readingwarrior.com, from Wheelers Books and select Paper Plus stores. His newest book, Samoan Heroes, is out now.

A novel suggestion What’s the story, readers? Well, judging by these recent releases, there are many to choose from!
A Decent Ride by Irvine Welsh In his latest work, Irvine Welsh is on the Juice! Billed as his funniest, filthiest book yet, A Decent Ride follows the story of ‘Juice’ Terry Lawson as he prowls the streets of Edinburgh wreaking havoc. But this time, he may just have met his match. Fans of Welsh’s work will be familiar with his loveable rogue, Juice, and other characters in this book, although those yet to experience his unique style should easily follow. To read more about Irvine Welsh, see the June 2014 issue of EastLife at eastlife.co.nz for our interview with the man himself. • A Decent Ride by Irvine Welsh. Published by Jonathan Cape and Penguin Random House. RRP $36.99.
The Assassin, by Clive Cussler and Justin Scott Can Isaac Bell discover the identity of an assassin, and for that matter the identity of his victim? Readers will discover answers to these questions as the private detective becomes enmeshed in a
tale of murder with thrills at every turn. A seemingly straightforward investigation into John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil monopoly is about to reveal some interesting discoveries indeed! • The Assassin: an Isaac Bell Adventure by Clive Cussler and Justin Scott. Published by Penguin. RRP $37.
So, Anyway by John Cleese In this highly humorous – yet informative – autobiography, John Cleese leads readers through his life, from childhood to the present with a book which proves he is every inch (and there are a few of them!) as much a writer as a performer.

But, more than that, the book shows he’s a keen student of the art and science of comedic structure. Including some ‘interesting’ stories about his first impressions of New Zealand, Cleese (whose original family name is Cheese!) really does show off his chops – both in smile and (occasionally) snarl – while providing insights into a plethora of comedy greats. Proving he’s more than just an ex-Python, and far from ready to meet his maker, in this book Cleese is at his best. • So, Anyway by John Cleese. Published by Random House. RRP $37.99 or $54.99 (hardback).
Highly confronting! exploits not so easy In the instance of Lydia Bradey’s mountaineering tale, Going Up Is Easy, judging a book by its cover, or rather its title, would be pointless. That’s because the exploits contained within are anything but ‘easy’.

Everest ascent, where she climbed oxygen-free to the summit at the age of 27. She also recounts her many hair-raising expeditions through Alaska, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, India, China, Europe and New Zealand.
The first woman to have climbed Everest without oxygen – and still the only New Zealander to have done so – Lydia is one of this country’s most experienced high-altitude mountaineers, and her personal journey is fascinating.
The 1988 Everest ascent was marred by controversy – which Lydia addresses. Left on the mountain by her team members, she made the final ascent alone with no one to share her remarkable feat.
Despite being a non-sporting only child, raised by a single mother, she grew up with an enduring ambition to climb 8000-metre peaks.
Although her claim to the top was later formally acknowledged, she had to face detractors who did not believe her.
In her book, Lydia tells of her historic

lived on the edge, depicting a woman propelled by curiosity and passion to become one of the greatest female high-altitude adventurers of all time. Yet Lydia is candid about the highs and the lows of these emotionally taxing expeditions: the tough times, the grief of losing fellow climbing companions, joy in the beauty of nature, gruelling and changeable mountain conditions – and making a summit. Co-written with acclaimed novelist Laurence Fearnley and stunningly illustrated, Going Up is Easy is an inspiring and powerful story. • Going Up is Easy by Lydia Bradey. Published by Penguin. Exceptional all-round education King’s College is unique in the way it prepares its students for post-school success both in terms of unparalleled preparation for university and for the real world. King’s has a distinctive strength in recognising, developing and realising the unique potential in each and every child. The College focuses on finding the right pathway for each child – not on teaching large groups of students the same thing. Class sizes are limited and a low pupil-to-teacher ratio ensures students are given greater individual attention in the classroom. This approach is paying dividends. In 2014, 90% of students achieved University Entrance and 11 won ‘topof-the-world’ Cambridge International Examination results. The House system at King’s is perhaps one of the most special aspects of school life. It provides an excellent network of support for each student to individually develop. Within their Houses, students have opportunities to celebrate their interests and passions, build lifelong friendships, and take on roles and responsibilities, which allow them to grow in confidence when dealing with their peers. Housemasters and House staff are heavily involved in the daily life and progress of students in their House, and are also a key point of contact for parents. The relationships that are established within the Houses are renowned for the strong support they provide, both at school and beyond. At King’s, the learning journey for www.eastlife.co.nz
each student extends beyond the classroom. All students spend time at the College’s venture camp, Ahuroa, where they develop outdoor skills and self-awareness, including appreciation of the outdoors and the natural environment. All Year 10 students spend approximately one month away from home and school on the Adventure Challenge. During the month, they take part in a broad spectrum of outdoor activities.
from computer programming, barista training and gaining qualifications such as a NAUI dive certification. Headmaster, Michael Leach says: “The vision of King’s College is to provide the best all-round education it is possible to obtain. This enables our students to become young men and women of fine character – confident yet grounded, kind, respectful and socially aware”.
Underlying this journey are some course-specific learning objectives, which revolve around giving students a better understanding of themselves, other people and the wider natural environment. King’s College believes that the development of strong values begins through service to others. By creating opportunities for students to engage with the community, the school aims to teach them the value of putting faith into action. More importantly, students learn that serving others is a lifelong and highly rewarding responsibility. Each week students volunteer their own time to help those in the community who really need it. Since the establishment of this service scheme, King’s College has developed relationships with a number of community agencies that it now works alongside. In addition to sports, House events, Chapel services and cultural practices, an exciting range of activities is provided to boarding students who stay over the weekend. Superior Bay lifestyle The sunny Bay of Plenty is a magnet for retirees and Tauranga’s lovely Copper Crest Village Estate for seniors (60+) offers a fabulous villa lifestyle. Copper Crest has been designed with a clear vision to create a premier retirement village that provides independent living in a safe and secure environment, as well as allowing residents the freedom to get on with life. Here, residents enjoy the village activities and companionship that an amenity-packed Meridian Centre offers. They also have the peace of mind that if away, their villa and garden are taken care of. The Meridian Centre has a heated swimming pool, spa, gymnasium, library, cinema, lounges, full kitchen and dining, all furnished like a 5-star hotel! Imagine how amazing it would be to have all this at your fingertips? The villas at Copper Crest Village Estate are built with a lovely, elevated, northerly aspect. They have an excellent finish and the chattels are top of the line. Add to this high ceilings (2.7-metre stud height) plus lots of double glazed tinted windows built to capture the sun.
After being invited to one of Tauranga’s retirement villages for an exercise class and a lunch to meet some of the residents approximately 10 years ago I came home very impressed with the concept of living in a community with security and companionship. Ted, my husband, did not agree and said, ‘over my dead body’. Two years later he decided maybe we could just go and have a look. He then decided it was not such a
crazy idea, so we duly looked at all the available villages. I started a notebook with the pros and cons of each village and we made our choice. When we heard the Meridian Centre was to open at Copper Crest we came and had a look and were very impressed. We sold our house by private sale to our neighbour’s friends, who were moving to Tauranga. They were happy to wait until our house was
built at Copper Crest as they were able to house-sit for friends of theirs just down the road from us. So, some things are just meant to be. Astrid made things very easy for us, with a choice of section and house plans with alterations as required. Bruce, too, has been very helpful. We are both very happy that destiny sent us here. Retirement – New life adventure While many retirees want to stay in their own homes as long as possible others are keen to enjoy all the advantages moving to a retirement village can afford.
well as monthly/annual costs, before making a decision. When considering a retirement village, it is important to think about where you want to live, what size home you want and the level of independence you desire. Do you want ground floor or upper level living and do you need car parking?
However, exploring the options may still be confusing especially when there are retirement villages and resorts, rest homes and possible nursing care to consider. What’s more, for many people there is nothing to hold them to a particular area. Sometimes moving out of town is the more affordable option and also an opportunity to embark on a new life adventure.
Ask about maintenance and security, medical and long term care, recreation, finances and what level of input you have or require. Ask family members, a specialist service or your lawyer, to help ensure the best possible care to suit your needs as you progress through your retirement.
Fortunately, there is a range of attractive options offering everything from total independent living to serviced apartments as well as hospital care should health issues arise. In every case, residents enjoy physical security, medical support and social activities with no worries about home maintenance.
Taking the stress out of moving
For many, their choice of retirement living will also mean no fretting over cooking, bills, or transport to shops or medical visits. For those still active and enjoying good health, a retirement village scenario usually means they can still travel, have visitors to stay and even remain employed. You are likely to find recreational facilities such as a swimming pool or bowling green plus communal lounges, a restaurant, library and more. And such establishments all offer outings and a range of versatile in-house entertainment.
Feeling excited by the freedom and opportunities that come when moving to a retirement village even though it may be in another district or town but daunted by the work involved? Moving house can be stressful but it doesn’t have to be.
living overseas so many retiring Aucklanders do not have children living nearby. Even if they do, families are often too busy with their own lives to be available when parents start the massive task of down-sizing and moving.
For many folk, life may have involved moving around to different homes in various locations with each new home providing more space for the family and its evergrowing possessions.
It’s a daunting job preparing the home for sale, decluttering and then packing, organising movers and selling or gifting unwanted possessions.
The professional team can help in the disposal of items or arrange for their donation to charities of your choice. Packing of items for storage can be organised especially if possessions are being kept for family members who are offshore.
There’s liaison with real estate agents and solicitors to consider and, finally, unpacking at the new location. Too often, at this important stage of life, many people have to go it alone.
For many people help given by trained professionals to prepare the home for sale, including general house and garden maintenance, and finding a real estate agent, if needed, is truly appreciated.
But, Elderly Assist is one organisation which can help with down-sizing and decluttering, then packing and relocating.
This is a company which can manage an entire move or just parts of it, without “taking over”. Visit www.elderlyassist.co.nz
But this time, with the family now gone, the retirement move may be to a smaller, stand-alone villa, or a village apartment offering less housework, a sense of ‘lock-up and leave’ and freedom to travel. But, that may also mean down-sizing.
For those whose health requires a higher level of care, an on-site hospital facility is a feature of some villages. Check for such details as
Statistics NZ estimates that some 800,000 New Zealand citizens are

A life changer...
LocAtor AttAcHMentS For LoWer DentureS the team at PDP Denture Studio understand the challenges faced by denture wearers. even the most expertly crafted dentures can be challenging in some situations. What many people don’t realise is that although upper dentures are held in with suction, lower dentures are not. Full lower dentures basically just sit on the lower jaw and balance, relying on the muscles of the face to hold it in place. now, this sounds simple enough, but when you add the movement of the lower jaw, the tongue and then of course food! Well, let’s just say it can be challenging and at times extremely difficult, particularly for novice denture wearers. With modern drug therapy, disease control, treatment techniques and healthcare innovations, today’s seniors are living longer than ever. According to statistics, 26% of all seniors over 65 will lose all of their natural teeth. these edentulous seniors are actively looking for ways to improve their quality of life. Finding a solution to their edentulism (missing teeth) is a priority. After almost 27 years in the industry, Leah taylor and her dedicated team have helped thousands of people from all over new Zealand, Australia,
tHe teaM at PdP deNture studio the Pacific Islands, even as far as the united Kingdom and the States, with their dentures. now, they are excited that finally there is an affordable solution for denture wearers who are tired of gooey, messy adhesives, or are just leaving their lower dentures out altogether! the Locator Attachment is here! For some denture wearers the mere thought of being able to laugh, eat, smile, sneeze and cough with confidence is a thing of the past…and public speaking? Well that’s just been terrifying. the introduction of Locators can change all of that. the denture-wearing public wants a treatment option for edentulism that is reliable, easy and ultimately allows them to improve their quality of life and their overall health, all while being able to fit within their current financial situation. Many edentulous patients are discovering, either through their social networks or via recommendations from their dentist, that dental implant therapy

these versatile attachments can be fitted to new dentures, or can be added to existing dentures. “these Locators are a life changer” says award-winning clinical dental technician, Leah. “that is what our patients tell us! they have gone from not being able to wear their dentures, to eating all the foods they love again!”
may be the ideal treatment for their edentulism. once the patient begins considering dental implant therapy, they will, understandably, have some concerns: • Fear of invasive surgery • cost associated with treatment • Length of treatment protocol • How their life will change with implant-retained dentures the team at PDP Denture Studio are here to help inform and assist patients in understanding the implant-retained over-denture treatment.
the Locators are small, easy to care for and clean, and are easily placed without pain by a dental specialist. After a healing period of around three months, the denture is then fitted with the attachments at PDP Denture Studio and from then on it’s eat what you want, cough, sneeze and laugh to your heart’s content. I used to be totally grounded in science. Double bind, placebo, control studies and I were best buddies. I could mix it with the best, quoting studies and counter studies. Every now and then I would listen to someone talk about energy medicine, just for a chuckle. Over time, I stopped chuckling. I was impressed by results and energy medicine was delivering them. In life, when you reach these challenge points, you can try and discredit what you do not understand or you can try and understand it. To do this, you have to take your ego into the back yard and bury it and then come back and have a good look at the evidence. The evidence is compelling. Energy medicine has featured since the beginning of man. We just managed to find reasons to ignore the evidence of some of the greatest cultures that worked with it.
Sophisticated equipment is now available to measure the energy in different parts of the body and compare it to the resonance of healthy tissue. Sounds whacky? Well it gets even wackier. If energy is low in some part of the body, then this is said to be the foundation of dis-ease. These energy deficits and the reasons for them can be identified. Everything has a resonance: parasites, bacteria, toxins, disease, everything. They can be identified via this resonance.

Some are better than others. More than 5000 doctors in Europe use the ETA scan. This scan is also used in Chinese hospitals. This is the same scan we use at bewell.
When it comes down to it, how could it be possible for a half clothed Indian gentleman or a bald headed Chinaman to know more than one of our illustrious, orthodox practitioners?
The field of energy medicine is too big to do it justice in one article. It may, however, be the answer you didn’t know you were looking for. If you have tried everything conventional medicine has to offer and not achieved wellness, this could be the answer for you.
So what is energy medicine? It is based on the premise that energy is the foundation of life and health. This energy can be measured.
At bewell, we combine science, naturopathy and energy medicine. Visit our website www.bewell.net.nz for more information.

Personal enhancement procedures respected plastic surgeon, MArtIn reeS from Marina Specialists addresses the desire by many people to improve on biological features they were born with or changes that have occurred through ageing.
‘
Human nature is such that many of us are not content with how we look or ‘who we are’ for some reason. nearly all of us have an aesthetic sense that we use to recognise what is beautiful in life; a flower, a bird, child or one’s partner; even one’s self! equally there are some creatures, sights or people that we do not like to look at as our aesthetic sense of beauty is offended, which is an unpleasant experience. We all have a strong sense of personal identity from seeing ourselves in photos (as other people see us) or in the mirror as we usually see ourselves ( the reverse of how we actually look!) Some people are unfortunately born with features that are outside the ‘normal range’ (biological variation). Some of us as we age change considerably and become something we are not used to seeing...a face or body reminiscent of our mother or father! that person looking back at me is no longer ‘me’ as my brain remembers but the image of an old man or woman. So many patients tell me things like this. the photos taken at a family wedding often catch one unawares, ‘side-on’ showing that humped or hooked nose, or a thick, fat neck that isn’t obvious from the front when looking in the mirror. this may precipitate a person into seeking professional advice from a

Lacking motivation? the key to creating high levels of motivation is to tap into emotional drivers and strive for goals that you are passionate about.
talk to the team at your local Jetts club for more health tips and exercise information. this article is provided by oLLY coFFeY, Development and Support for mibodycoach.com, and consultant to Jetts 24-Hour Fitness. People often refer to motivation as if it were a special gene or trait that is beyond their own control – “I can’t do that because I have no motivation. In reality, you have complete control over your motivation levels. By highlighting what motivates you, those traits such as having drive, determination, dedication, willpower and the single-minded focus to successfully achieve your goals will naturally come to the forefront. What is motivation? or more to the point, what is your motivation? What are you passionate about, what will inspire you into action and what will lift you when you feel like giving up? Yes, you need a goal, but your level of motivation hangs on what this goal means to you. Your goal guides you, but your action is fuelled by your feelings about what success will feel like. this becomes your motivation.
How will you feel when you achieve this goal, what will you be able to do once you have achieved this goal, how will your life change once you have achieved your goal?
Sometimes we need to do things that may not motivate or inspire us. In these cases, you need to attach meaning to your goal so that it taps into your desires.
the key step is to make a distinction between your goals, what you need to do to achieve your goals and your motivation. Losing weight or earning more money, are both fantastic goals. to achieve these goals you need to get out of bed early to ‘walk around the block’, or ‘get into the office early’.
You may be told that you need to improve your health for example. While this may not inspire you directly, you could use something you are passionate about such as spending time with grandchildren.
Your goal to lose weight or earn more money, are unlikely to lead to those sacrifices or ‘actions’ required unless you are highly motivated. What on earth would motivate you to get out of bed on a dark and cold morning to walk around the block, or get into the office early? You need to have strong emotional drivers such as, ‘I will have the
EVERY JOURNEY STARTS WITH A SINGLE STEP
confidence to walk down the beach in my swimwear this summer’, or I will ‘save enough money to go on that holiday I have planned’ in order to motivate you into action. Your sacrifice needs to be seen to be worth it, or else that devil on your shoulder will talk you out of action every time. unless you are emotionally invested or inspired to do something, motivation levels will be low.
Your goal could then be to improve your health; your motivation is the opportunity to spend better quality time with your loved ones. When you are losing focus or enthusiasm about those actions required to improve your health, you can draw upon your motivation, which is to spend quality time with your grandchildren. What motivates you?

Foods to fuel your body GINNY MCARTHUR – Outlook for Life. Ginny is not only a nutritionalist and personal trainer but also a marathon runner and regular on Newstalk ZB. Every single cell of who you are and what you are and how you think comes from the food that you choose to put into your body. Every 7-10 years you turn over all your cells to make a whole new you. If you are eating rubbish then you have created a whole new you out of rubbish so you are going to feel like rubbish too! It’s like putting fuel into your car; if you fill a petrol car with diesel or a diesel car with petrol you won’t go very far! In fact, to be honest an awful lot of people I see look after their cars way better than they look after their bodies! Take the emotion out of it; you cannot fill an emotional hole with chocolate biscuits. Food is fuel for your body; it
is very important so, take time to plan your meals for the week. Shop from your meal plan and then spend some time at the weekend prepping your food for the week. Also make sure you drink enough water. Every process that turns food into energy from your saliva throughout your digestive tract requires water. If you are even a little dehydrated you slow this process down. We need water to make synovial fluid so that our joints can work smoothly. We need water to flush out our kidneys and to help to prevent kidney stones. And, of course it is also great for your skin. Try to eat within two hours of getting up, to rev up your metabolism.

Include two to three calcium serves a day, preferably from low fat dairy or alternative sources. Aim for four handfuls of fibrous veggies – lots of different colours – and for fibre and antioxidants ensure two to three serves of fruit a day. food Dawn of new era for Fisher House recipes | profile | products | pantry | dining guide
The arrival of a new owner heralds a new beginning for one of Highbrook’s most esteemed dining venues bringing a refreshing wave of change for the district. Fisher House in Kerwyn Ave is now under the ownership of savvy businessman, Mark Nicholls, who has an uplifting passion for the wellestablished local name. Once the family home and famed Ra Ora Stud of the late Sir Woolf Fisher, of Fisher & Paykel, Fisher House now serves as an all-day, all-week dining destination for hungry locals and office workers alike. With some 30 years experience at Auckland’s top restaurants, including inner city bigwigs such as SkyCity, Mark knows a culinary gem when he sees one. “I’d been working behind the scenes of Fisher House for nearly a year and I could see its potential,” he says. “So when it became available I simply couldn’t pass it up and took the plunge.” In a relatively short time, Mark has set his sights on turning around the business by incorporating welcome changes. Gone are the once haphazard hours; now, Fisher House is open Monday to Friday, 6am until late. Weekend hours are similarly consistent but from 10am onwards. More importantly, the restaurant is open seven days for breakfast/

As the day wears on, diners can then relax and unwind in the bar or dining room, sitting down to an elegant setting with dimmed lights, white linen and gleaming glassware.
A well-executed upmarket experience awaits, courtesy of the expert culinary and front-of-house team boasting a mix of old and new talents. Patrons are made to feel welcome and comfortable in the capable hands of their hosts.
weddings, garden parties and celebrations are sure to be a success. On a nice day nothing beats sitting out in the fabulous garden terrace bathed in sunshine whilst enjoying a sumptuous weekend brunch, lunch or after work drinks.
In light of the new alcohol limits, Mark has even introduced a range of beers and wines with a low alcohol content so people can relax and have a glass or two without having to worry about driving later.
“It’s a place for families and the community to gather and create memories as we transform ourselves into a destination worth visiting,” says Mark.
In fact, recent feedback has reported a stellar dining experience, says Mark. “People have already noticed a huge difference. ‘Amazing’ has been pretty much the word of the day!” And in the summer, the warmth of Fisher House extends to its manicured gardens, where glorious

Banana Chimichanga (Chimichanga de Platano) Forget ‘boom chicka wawa’, when it comes to spicing things up in the kitchen, it’s better to go for a little ‘Ban Chimichanga’!
Place rolled tortillas into deep fryer or pan with enough hot oil to cover. Fry until golden. Remove and drain on paper towels.
While the infamous ‘Elvis sandwich’ was made with similar ingredients to this little beauty, Banana Chimichangas is a Mexican delight which is sure to be ‘King’ of the kitchen.
Combine sugar and cinnamon in a shallow dish. Roll drained tortillas in this mixture. Cut each in half, serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.

Moa may be extinct, but on the bright cide(r) at least the legacy of a long legged bird with bite remains. this is clear with Moa Brewing co.’s latest apple cider. However, while this crisp, refreshing beverage is as Kiwi as they come, thanks to the use of French oak chips during the fermentation process, it possesses a flavour with much to oo-la-la about! And, because it contains less sugar than many similar offerings Moa founder, Josh Scott, reckons it seems to answer his questions as to “why French women don’t get fat”! Moa Apple cider is available (rrP $21.99-$25.99 per 12 pack) from most liquor outlets and supermarkets.

Hearth of the home If there is one criticism of today’s contemporary homes it’s that sometimes minimalist decor and streamlined architecture can lack personality. However, with more people installing fireplaces – gas or wood-burning – there is an opportunity to give the modern home added character. Fireplace surrounds, which have made a big comeback in renovated villas and bungalows, are impacting on new homes too.

Among the options for surrounds are timber, marble, plaster or stone and, in some cases, the inclusion of a cast iron fascia will provide that extra note of elegance. Importantly, surrounds can be ornate or simply sculpted to fit with traditional or modern interior design.

Bell House still a property of note After featuring renowned chef, restaurateur and MasterChef New Zealand judge, Simon Gault in the Chef’s Collection, April edition of EastLife, we decided to take a fresh look at Bell House, where Simon opened his first restaurant in the late 1980s. Our thanks to Howick Historical Village for kindly supplying the information. The lovely 1851 building now known as Bell House is considered the jewel in the Howick and Districts Historical Society’s crown. Although not always so, it is now an NZ Historic Places Trust Category One listed building, and the onus is on the society to care for it appropriately. The house began its life near the Pakuranga Creek, having been built in 1851 for Captain C.H. Montressor Smith, a Fencible officer. He also built up a land holding of 195 acres and this, plus the house, was sold to Joseph King in 1856.
Above and below right, Bell House as it is now, below left, Bell House c.1898.
Photos Howick and Districts HIstorical Society
In 1868, Scotsman, David Bell purchased 89 acres from King and, after King’s death in 1893, David’s son Alexander purchased the remaining land and the house. He moved the house across the paddocks to its present site in Bell Road (adjacent to the Howick Historical Village) in 1895. It became his family home, and his wife and some of his children continued to live in the home after his death in 1925. Ownership of the house eventually passed to his children – David, Dufty (Robert Allan) and Elsie, the latter two buying out David. Although Dufty owned the farm, after his marriage he lived off-site in Howick but Elsie remained in her beloved family home. At the time of her death in 1963, she had recorded her wish that the house be preserved. Dufty rented out the house for several years, then in 1972, in accordance with his sister’s wishes, Bell House and three quarters of an acre of land was donated by Dufty Bell to NZ Historic Places Trust subject to the Howick and Districts Historical Society being permitted to use the property for as long as it could use and care for it. www.eastlife.co.nz
The NZHP Trust, together with the society, undertook a programme of repair and upgrading with advice from architect John Stacpoole from the Ministry of Works. Funding for this came from considerable donations made by Dufty Bell. The society also took out a debenture issue of $8,500 in 1975 to raise money for a sprinkler system. The building was leased by the NZHPT firstly to Gordon and Gene Campbell who opened tearooms and a restaurant in 1976. Some years later in 1987, a young and ambitious Simon Gault (MasterChef New Zealand judge and leading chef/ restaurateur) opened Bell House as a fine dining restaurant.
Following on from the departure of Simon, Bell House was leased to a series of restaurateurs. In 2003, legal ownership of Bell House was transferred to the society. But, then, in 2008 the building was damaged by fire when heat from an open fire in the downstairs fireplace penetrated to the old, dry kauri boards causing the surrounding timber to catch fire. Extensive restoration took over a year to arrange and complete. An upgrade of the toilet area, enabling disabled access, was also done at this time. A further grant from the R.A. Bell Trust in 2011 allowed the external restoration to be completed. The
kitchen was also fitted out. Today the onus is on the Howick Historical Village to care for it and to promote it as a venue hire. With its wrap around verandahs offering indoor and outdoor flow, Bell House, today, is a popular venue for wedding receptions, events and seminars, exhibitions, meetings, office parties and other functions. It has modern conveniences with the reception room accommodating 50 people seated, or 70 people standing, a far cry from the days of being one of the district’s earliest Settler homes. Aloha hibiscus, how are ya? the dowdiest garden can shine just by adding a beautiful hibiscus. Available in dwarf varieties to plants that grow as high as 2-3 metres, this tropical charmer, which blooms in a multitude of colourful shades, can also be grown in pots. Here eastLife takes a closer look at this stunner which is the national flower of both Malaysia and Korea. the hibiscus couldn’t be further away from home in new Zealand. We have our own native flowers such as the elegant clematis paniculata or the fiery pohutukawa, but let’s face it, we’re no island paradise fit for the hibiscus. Imagine the rustle of grass skirts and the gentle sway of beautiful, bronzed Hula girls dancing to the tune of the ukulele. no self-respecting Hula maiden would be caught without one of these beautiful five-petalled blossoms in her cascading dark hair. It stands to reason a certain deep redthroated variety is even named after the Hula Girl.
or sparkling wine and imparts a pretty pink colour while also subtly sweetens the drink. It takes the cake in desserts such as wild hibiscus pavlovas and makes starring debuts in a variety of jams, jellies and glazes to add pizzazz and amp up the gourmet factor.
tahitian women wear it in the same way; not as a decoration but to symbolise their availability for marriage – and they probably don’t stay available for very long, not when wearing the hibiscus! Highly valued in ancient times, some varieties are dubbed the rose of Sharon along with a few sisters from the mallow (malvaceae) family. So rosemallow, another of its names, makes perfect sense. And yes, this delightful ‘marshmallow’ was derived from the root of a plant from the mallow family. thought to be a native of India, Indonesia, Malaysia and West Africa, the striking colours of the hibiscus rosa-sinensis is befitting of the warm climates in these parts.
Likewise, hibiscus teas are pleasant to drink and are often used in combination with other herbal ingredients to enhance flavour while maintaining health benefits.
But lo and behold, this subtropical beauty blooms in our nippy new Zealand autumn (although it does need to be planted from late spring to early summer) and there is more to this delicate flower than meets the eye. For starters, it comes in all colours of the rainbow, from deep shades to light pastels. Its flowers may be shortlived (a day or two), but new buds appear every morning, and virtually all year round if conditions are right.
Gardens scattered with freshly-fallen hibiscuses can be a pretty scene, although they may annoy some. not just beautiful on the outside, the hibiscus plant also offers a number of health and beauty benefits. the flowers are known to serve as an astringent and its root is used to soothe overactive mucous membranes, which make it suitable for colds and winter ills. In particular, the hibiscus sabdariffa or roselle, is often used in herbal remedies and studies have shown that it lowers blood pressure in hypertensive patients. It may also help in lowering cholesterol levels, mimicking the benefits of red wine.
Beauty gurus in Asia have used the flower as hair dye and its bark is also used to regulate menstruation. Fashionistas are catered for too, with the bark used in grass skirts and for wigs in Polynesia. For some winter hydration, try hibiscus seed oil which is chock-full of vitamin e and other moisturising goodies that feeds and quenches thirsty skin effectively. Beauty on both the inside and out is a rare find. So grow a little slice of island paradise in new Zealand, and wait for the Hula girls to dance in the garden – all through autumn!
It helps that this variety exudes exquisite flavour and fragrance, and gourmet stores including Sabato, nosh and Farro are known to stock wild hibiscus flowers in syrup. A single flower is exceptionally dazzling when steeped in champagne

toILet rAnGe FLuSH WItH SucceSS A ‘wee’ new toilet will have environmentallyaware householders skipping to the loo in glee. the new Kohler reach compact toilet is designed to deliver water savings of almost 600 litres* a week and has improved cleaning efficiencies too. Ideal for smaller bathrooms and en suites, it carries a 4 star WeLS rating, having a 4.5 litre full flush and 3 litre half flush. traditionally, toilets have featured an unglazed open rim, however, Kohler has chosen the more efficient box rim and added a smooth glaze. the advantage of this is that there is a more even water distribution during the flush, which improves the cleaning of the bowl. In addition, glazing on and under the rim prevents bacteria from breeding, a great feature given this area is difficult to reach with cleaning materials.
the design of the reach is in response to the current trend towards streamlined fixtures for more compact bathrooms and en suites. unlike conventional toilets the reach protrudes a mere 600mm, instead of the usual 650 to 720mm, while its profile is one of soft curves and clean lines, with no angles or ridges to trap dirt or dust. Another benefit of the reach is the soft close seat with chrome hinges – it closes quietly and gently.

Postcards make a great collectible as they are small, relatively inexpensive and there is a wide variety of subject matter. Some old postcards are truly antiques, being over 100 years old. Antique postcards give us a glimpse into the past, showing examples of places, fashions and humour from another time. ‘ Innovative Interiors creating the perfect teenage retreat... Keeping a teenager’s room tidy is seldom easy but when Karla Wairau asked Innovative Interiors to come up with storage suggestions for her teenager daughter’s new, but small retreat, the company came up with a practical and attractive perfect solution to make the most of the space. When the teenager in our house decided it was time for more independence, a move downstairs into a newly created room was on the cards and so the challenge began! When we purchased the house a few years ago we felt then that the large lower area would be perfect as a future teenage retreat. And suddenly, eldest child, our daughter, was ready to take advantage of the space. The room designated for her was a rectangle; not huge, with an internal door, small window and double doors at one end leading to an outside pool. Our issue was that it was a blank room requiring clever use of space because of its size. First on the list (after initial sound proofing, of course) was the need for storage. We wanted a wardrobe to run full width across the end of the room and floor to ceiling. Anyone with teenagers – well, a teenager like mine – will know that young people want everything to www.eastlife.co.nz
have a place; they want functionality and they want it to look funky. As it turned out, Innovative Interiors was to meet our brief perfectly, making the process as easy as possible. The offer of a free consultation with a no-obligation quote immediately gave us peace of mind so we got started. The promise of space efficiency was a big hook; the idea that everything would be in the wardrobe with no need for additional furniture in the room, other than a bedside table, suited perfectly. After spending time browsing Innovative Interiors extensive website and discussing various options with design consultant, Linaire Vipond, the ultimate space was created. We chose a design from the Classic range, an elegant, floor-mounted wardrobe system allowing for an extensive selection of accessories to suit our daughter’s needs.
Linaire’s initial drawing was done to our measurements and followed our brief. Project manager Murray Clinch then carried out an on-site measure, another little bonus that ensured peace of mind that the install would be smooth. As a limited DIY person I was also grateful of his building background as he was able to offer additional tips regarding finishing and lighting of the room. A quick trip to the Innovative Interiors Mt Wellington showroom followed the measure and quote process. Though this wasn’t really necessary it meant as a family we could all agree on the final finishing accessories. Sliding doors were chosen to

complete the look and to provide a superior finishing touch to the wardrobe. Sleek aluminium frames, that glide along the tracks with the lightest touch, came with the option of various panels. We chose a three-door system to allow for the most flexibility and ease of access – two panels in white and one with a mirror finish which are not only practical (who doesn’t want a full-length mirror in their room?) but also give a very upmarket look. The install was quick and easy and the result amazing. So, why not take in your plans or measurements and start brainstorming on the spot, or phone 0800 80 30 50 for an on-site appointment?

Causes and effects Total Focus Principal, Greg Roy areinz, gives an update on the local real estate market happenings.
Is it just me or is this year disappearing fast – we are nearly half way through and we have certainly seen an incredible movement in the Auckland property market over the past few months. However, April sales statistics from REINZ for our area show an easing off in both the number of sales and the median price from the record highs of March. The median eased back from March’s $878,750 to $873,000 and the number of sales returned to a more typical 191 down from March’s 276. Naturally the total value of sales for the month also came back to $186,780,800 from March’s record of $272,039,226. The number of listings still remain low and a recent check I undertook on realestate.co.nz for our area showed
that there were currently under 300 properties for sale – that’s across all price ranges and for properties from the Panmure bridge, across Pakuranga, over to the peninsula and down to Botany and Mission Heights. This doesn’t give the buyers a lot of choice. Over past months I have discussed the driving forces behind the Auckland market, those being the urban limits, population increase – especially from immigration – and the historically low interest rates borrowers are currently enjoying. The low rates have many causes and effects. They give borrowers the ability to take on larger and/or further mortgages making for a new market of property investors. Low return rates also drive those with money to invest, to look at
alternatives from leaving their monies on deposit with a bank. These people also turn to the housing market. The up-surge in house prices, without a corresponding increase in rents (well not to the same extent) has, however, dropped the return on residential rentals from the typical 4.5-5% yield down to 3.5-4%. On the other hand, capital gains are more than making up for this shortfall.
The Reserve Bank, with its new 30% deposit levels, and the Government with its new tax – on Auckland properties bought by investors and sold within two years – have both stepped in to try and curb the price hikes. I hope that they do have some effect and we see prices stabilised. This will be welcomed by those that just can’t get into the current market to buy their first home as well as families trying to move up to their next home but who are unable to buy conditionally and don’t want to take the chance of selling first and then joining the furore at an auction to try and buy their next home.

Good advice pays, not costs I am one of the first in my group of friends to reach the Big 50 and had an amazing weekend.
Nick Neben is a director of specialist renovation company Smith & Sons Howick and a time-served builder of more than 30 years experience. Ever since starting my monthly column in EastLife I have strongly focused on the importance of maintaining homes. For 99% of Kiwis who own a home, it is the biggest investment they will ever make and it needs to be protected. Whether you own a 70-year-old bungalow, a 1990’s brick and tile townhouse or a contemporary, 5-year-old masterpiece, they all need regular maintenance. The experts reckon that spending between 1-2% per year of the value of your home on maintenance is essential to ensure you protect your investment. This may seem a lot of money, but depending on the type and age of your home, this will vary. The change of seasons, which has put autumn behind us, is an important time to ensure spoutings www.eastlife.co.nz
and downpipes are clear of leaves or other growth, stormwater channels and cesspits are cleaned out and vegetation is cut right back away from the cladding and windows to allow airflow and to let the sun through. It is also important to ensure ventilation, insulation and heating are all performing the way they should be. Regular washing down and cleaning of roof and cladding is important to stop mould, fungus and lichen taking hold and breaking down the different protective surfaces that are there to enhance the way your home looks. When sitting in my accountant’s waiting room the other day I read this on a poster: Good advice pays, not costs. I feel those words are relevant to all those who have taken time to read my column and value the importance
‘
My son Jamie and his girlfriend travelled up from Queenstown, my step-brother Phil and partner, Sandra flew in from Sydney and lots of others came up to Auckland from all around the country.

of looking after their homes. For those who ignore my advice, it will cost you in the end! With Queen’s Birthday Weekend just gone, I marked a personal milestone celebrating my 50th birthday with family and friends.
Unfortunately, my daughter, Cherylee, who lives in the outback of Western Australia couldn’t make it (it broke her heart not being here) but we had a drink or two on her behalf. A big thanks to Nobby and Tommy from The Secret Thai Garden in Otahuhu for putting on a truly memorable experience on the Saturday night and to all those special people that joined in the celebrations. Till next month, keep warm and don’t forget to clear the leaves from those gutters, look to repairs that could prove more costly if unattended and keep paths clean of slippery green growth. eastlife | june 2015 |

When considering property investment or any other business transaction, prudent organisations and/or individuals always take advice about the tax implications on any income from that investment. tax on capital gains has always been a hot topic for people considering investment in property. traditionally, here in new Zealand, the idea of taxing capital gains on investment property has been demonised but for most it has long been considered inevitable. Future generations may have no idea why this country was without an effective tax on unearned wealth for so long. recent announcements as part of the Government’s 2015 Budget have brought this point to the fore. Generally, the announcement was seen as an attempt to restrain everincreasing Auckland house prices but the fact is that many of the rules around tax liability already applied. Property Institute chief executive Ashley church applauded the new suite of tax and property measures but labelled them more ‘welcome tweaks’ than major policy changes.

He has said that the decision to tax capital gains made on property sold within two years was a change in emphasis rather than a new policy. “It’s been government policy to levy tax on anyone buying an investment property with the intention of selling it at a profit within 10 years of purchase, for as long as I can remember. So, the real change here is
that the Government is giving the IrD more resource to police that policy within the first two years of that purchase. the changes will mean that there is a tightening up of the ‘intention rule’ the IrD already had in place. So if you buy a property intending to sell it to make a profit, you get taxed on it. exemptions to this will be established with the new bright-line test. If the property sold is the seller’s main home, if it is part of a deceased estate or inherited, or if it is transferred as part of a relationship settlement. Many believe these changes will have little effect on the Auckland housing market or on investors’ long term strategic plans. It’s most likely that savvy investors will take advantage of the current boom and hang on to their properties for years to come. the reserve Bank’s recent announcement that Auckland property investors would need at least 30 per cent deposit to get bank finance from october does, of course, target this area exclusively. Whether it will successfully slow the Auckland housing market only time will tell. Meanwhile, for those who have invested in the Auckland market the good news is that demand for rental properties is still very strong. With rents rising year on year and house prices continuing to rise I think the old expression ‘safe as houses’ still applies. business A financial problem shared
news | comment
is a problem halved
HANNAH McQUEEN, founder of financial personal trainers – enableMe, says talking honestly and openly about money will reduce your financial stress. Listen up anyone feeling stressed about money…you are not alone. A recent survey into banking habits in New Zealand has thrown up a few facts and figures showing a third of Kiwis think that dealing with money is stressful and overwhelming. The survey is not wrong, money is hugely stressful. We can’t live without money. It’s one of life’s necessities. Money affects our own lives and those of family and friends. It impacts on our health, our wellbeing and our relationships. Did you know that money is now cited as one of the major causes of marital breakdowns? I agree with the saying that money can’t buy happiness but if finances are being severely mismanaged, that can cause an awful lot of angst. What’s more, according to the survey (conducted by consumer research company CanStar Blue), 43% of people who participated say they are uncomfortable just thinking about their long term financial future. While most will experience a bit of financial stress from time to time, this figure rings alarm bells for me. The point at which you begin to ignore financial problems is the point at which problems will start to escalate.
I do understand that often when presented with an uncomfortable situation it’s easy to put it into the ‘too hard’ basket and blank it out. However, while this may be fine for things such as rsvp-ing to an event you are in two minds about attending, money is too serious an issue to sweep under the carpet. If concerned about money or worried about your financial future, now is the time to address whatever is on your mind and talk about it. It’s true that Kiwis don’t have a great track record of talking about money. Many of us grew up in households where money talk was taboo. But as a nation, we are getting better at discussing our finances. We still have a long way to go but as a financial personal trainer, I am witness to changing attitudes. And I’m delighted that personal financial advice is no longer viewed as the preserve of the wealthy. My clients are ordinary people from a range of backgrounds. They consult me because they have a financial problem, which they realise won’t go away unless they tackle it, or they simply want a better handle on their money so they can make financial
progress in their lives. This usually includes paying off their mortgage. I applaud these people. It’s not easy opening up if in a financial pickle. It takes courage. I have seen people who have kept financial secrets from partners for years, sometimes to the tune of debts into the hundreds of thousands. Such cases are extreme but at least those people have been brave enough to take financial responsibility for their actions and became proactive in making amends. Of course, you might not need a third party advisor at this stage. You might just need to sit down with your partner and talk about how you feel about your financial situation. As a family you may be overspending and need to re-dress this balance. Or you might want to discuss how
to save for a well-earned holiday. It might be that you are amongst the 43% of New Zealanders who find it hard to even think about the financial future. In which case, you absolutely must air your concerns. Make a regular time slot with your partner and review your finances. Know what your income stream is and know your outgoings. If more is going out than is coming in, draw up a realistic budget. Set some milestones and list some financial goals so you can plan for the financial future too. And, be reassured – sharing your problems really will cut down on stress levels. A study last year by researchers, from the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business, scientifically proved that the best way to beat stress was to share your feelings – and sharing with someone in the same situation yields the best results.

Opt in or miss out Wynyard Wood consultant, RICHARD OSBORNE, whose specialties include commercial law and intellectual property law, writes on issues concerning the business community Most small companies have nine shareholders or less. Under the Companies Act 1993 all companies had to audit their financial statements. The shareholders in small companies usually resolved not to do so. The basic rule was that an audit was required. From April 1, 2014 that rule changed. A company with nine shareholders or less does not have to audit its financial statements. (Financial statements are not mandatory in all cases.) Now, under section 207K of the Companies Act 1993, if a company has nine or less shareholders and it prepares financial statements it does not need an audit.
‘
Now, under section 207K of the Companies Act 1993, if a company has nine or less shareholders and it prepares financial statements it does not need an audit.”
The ‘opting in’ right has to be exercised within the opting period. In most cases, by the date, which is five working days before the day, which is six months after the start of that financial period.
However, shareholders with 5% or more of its voting shares can give notice to the company that they want an audit. They opt in to the audit requirement.
If the shareholders’ attention is focused on the finalisation of the prior financial year accounts it is easy to miss the opportunity to have the next year’s financial accounts audited. The six months opt in period could lapse without an opt in notice.
A point to note is that often the financial statements for one financial year will not be signed off until well into the next financial year (six months or later is not uncommon).
This could be significant if a shareholder wants to move from no audit in one financial year to an audit in the next financial year. So opt in or miss out.

But then, only wimps want ‘easy’.
Firstly, there has to be a positive attitude to any change. People resist change, mostly because...
Being ‘different’ is difficult, but thrilling, with a capital ‘D’. You enter the zone where the greatest pleasure is doing what people say you cannot do. Yesss!
...they believe they will lose their place, in the current ‘system’. The clever ones ‘get over it’, and adapt, going on to create a greater good.
One of my fave quotes comes from Ralph Waldo Emerson: ‘Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead, where there is no path, and leave a trail.’ It is a core principle of our PATH Course. Your ‘EastLife’ features local people, who are doing ‘different’ things everywhere. Yay! Are you? ‘Innovation’ is a hot buzzword right now. Unfortunately, there is more talking about innovation, than actual innovating. You’ll find very few businesses, councils or government departments et al, which have someone actually responsible for... ‘innovation’. Oh, you noticed already. When were you last invited to offer an idea or concept that would make life better? Innovation is more than a talkfest about weird (wacky, even) and wonderful scenarios for the future.
Sceptics can learn much from their children. In my speaking, coaching and mentoring work worldwide, I offer my power strategy, ‘Do it Differently!’ Do you have an exciting project (Yes you have!), with a tentative process for bringing it into being and a methodology for testing, applying and measuring it? Then, turn off telly, flick away Netflix, forego your Facebook, tweeze your Twitter and... go make stuff happen. A legacy awaits you. No gun needed
to make rabbit range runaway success Starting a new business is tough at any time, but even more so when one has an eight-month old daughter and is still learning the motherhood ropes after a career in the beauty industry. Yet one local’s fledgling baby wear venture – OMA rapeti – has hopped ahead at speed. Amanda Baunton talks to HELEN PERRY about the run so far. Convinced her first child would be a boy, Amanda Baunton was delighted, if somewhat unbelieving when she gave birth to 3.3kg (7lb 3oz) Olive. And, with a drawer full of neutral coloured garments, she was soon shopping for more feminine babywear to put her little girl in the pink. “What I found was plenty of cute outfits but all of a similar ilk. Many prints and patterns seemed quite cheesy and I wasn’t always impressed with fabric quality.” Having grown up with a seamstress Nana and a mother who also sewed for the family, Amanda was an able sewer but had done little on her machine in years. However, spurred by her desire for more on-trend babywear, and with encouragement from husband Andrew, she set about making first a pair of moccasins and then a pair of pants for Olive – a beautifully-made, original pattern which was to form the basis of her OMA rapeti label. “I called them I Heart flamingo pants because of the pattern and when I idly put them up on my Facebook page. I was amazed at the requests from friends to make more. That was when the idea of developing my own range for newborns to five years old really took hold. Always up for a challenge, I decided to give it a go.” Like most newborns, Olive slept 80 per cent of the time so the first few months went smoothly, says Amanda. But as her daughter grew, pressures built. “I have two wonderful step daughters, Ava and Maia, who www.eastlife.co.nz
monopolise Olive when they are here – in fact, the OMA in my label is an acronym of the first letter of all their Christian names. And from the beginning, mum has helped with the sewing. Yet, as the range expanded it became apparent I would need help.” Fortunately using an East Auckland Facebook situations vacant site her appeal for a part-timer machinist was answered. “Amazingly, a mum from just a few streets away put up her hand and that’s worked out great.”
‘
Amanda also discovered online chat site, Mummy Matters where she made contact with a number of mums operating home-based businesses meeting the needs of children. Before long she had also found someone to assist with pattern drafting, giving her more time for designing and sourcing fabrics. Having previously held education and management roles for leading professional hair care companies, L’Oreal and Wella, Amanda’s former super busy career stood her in good stead to grow her new enterprise. “Although it’s been unbelievably hard going – I’ve never worked so hard in my life despite previously doing 50-60 hours per week – one year down and I’m going from strength to strength. I sell primarily online through Facebook and have a following of more than 6000 fans. It’s incredible how far you can go through social media these days.
New Zealanders are renowned for their tall poppy syndrome so it’s a challenge to put myself out there without feeling like I’m tooting my own horn. Yet, I figure if no one else is doing the job then I’d better do it!”
“The OMA rapeti range has also featured in a leading baby/parenting magazine as part of an autumn fashion shoot; that was really exciting but because of the label’s rapid success I get so enthusiastic that it’s hard to remain modest. “New Zealanders are renowned for their tall poppy syndrome so it’s a challenge to put myself out there without feeling like I’m tooting my own horn. Yet, I figure if no one else is doing the job then I’d better do it!” One of Amanda’s biggest challenges has been making everything to order with just a one month turnaround, “especially as I put a lot of detail into the design and making”. As a result
Amanda Baunton she is now looking to introduce a seasonal ‘off the rack’ range. “OMA rapeti is the overall label with ‘Where’s rapeti’ my signature range,” Amanda says. “The name is indicative of the little grey rabbit which features just inside the pocket on every garment. And because my mother has contributed so much to the business I’m thinking of introducing a ‘Nana rapeti’ range to allow mum to use her creativity.” Looking ahead Amanda says her short term goal is to do a detailed business course to help her produce a viable long term goal. “First I need my own website. Then, eventually, I would love a chain of OMA rapeti stores here and in Australia but that could be a way down the track as life, as well as business, is pretty well sewn up for the present.” eastlife | june 2015 |
