BEWITCHING STYLE: Witchery’s First Edition Collection makes a bold statement that is wholly black and white – no shades of grey! Designed to combine with the upcoming release of Witchery Swim, First Edition has women effortlessly covered for day or night. This sophisticated, waisted dress, featuring softly-draped, wrap-style skirt and daring baring of arms and cleavage, is just one in a range that goes against the colour grain. See page 41.

Exhilarating events raise spirits It’s been an exciting month. The Rugby World Cup saw plenty of early morning risings and, of course, by the time this issue of EastLife hits the streets the outcome will be known. I’m sure readers can imagine how I would feel, sitting in Sydney, surrounded by Aussies, watching the final! I’ll tell you how it went next time but, as I write this ahead of the game, I sure do hope it will be my sister-in-law and I who will be loudly crowing! RWC aside, my little sojourn to Sydney for a girls’ weekend (extended) meant some summer wardrobe shopping, a few Christmas presents (I know, we don’t really want to think about the festive season being at our heels) and a little bit of relaxation – dining and wining, of course! Earlier in the month there was a night with Neil Diamond, well, at his concert actually. Great fun (see page 28) and just wonderful to hear this pop legend still belting out those Hot

August Night favourites of 1972. Yes, the man was in fine fettle although age is beginning to catch up, but only just. However, playing to a truly captive audience, no one really cared that at 74 he wasn’t going to sing and move like a 31 year old! The almost capacity crowd was just happy to hear his signature numbers still being sung with gusto and having the opportunity to hear most of them. Yes, I remain, forever a fan.

November 2015 ➤ guy fawkes Papakura Fireworks Spectacular November 6, from 6.30pm, Massey Park, 2 Ron Keat Drive, Papakura Whether you’re a fan of that best of British traditions of blowing things up to commemorate the thwarting of the Gunpower Plot, or not, there’s something to be said about a good, old fashioned fireworks show. And, once again, thanks to Papakura Lions and the local board, we can enjoy a brilliant display in safety. In addition, visitors can expect all the fun of the fair, with local schools, dance troupes and musicians providing even more entertainment. For details, contact Papakura Lions (via lionsclubs.org. nz). Spooks & Sparks November 7, 4.30-10pm, The Trusts Arena, 65-67 Central Park Drive, Henderson Where do ghastly ghouls go once Halloween is done? And where can we safely go a little crackers when celebrating Guy Fawkes? Well, the answer to both is to go west as we trust in Trusts to deliver a fun-filled family night. In addition to the fireworks (30 minute display), rides and more await; spot prizes will be up for grabs along with giveaways for the best dressed. See thetrustsarena. co.nz for details.

All proceeds go to support World Child Cancer’s Pacific chapter; tickets from Ticketek.co.nz. Waiheke Island Garden Safari November 7-8, Waiheke Island, various locations Why the heck head to Waiheke? There are numerous reasons but (we think) the best is certainly The Jassy Dean Trust’s annual garden safari. So, load up the Woody with the boards on top and head on over for a wonderful excuse to explore a marvellous place. As for when to go, check for ferries (via sealink. co.nz), but remember that while the island may run on island time, the boats don’t! More details available at waihekegardensafari.co.nz. Pohutukawa Coast Garden Ramble November 21, 10am-4pm, locations vary From country cottage to subtropical and native-style gardens, the Pohutukawa Coast Garden Ramble is again set to feature some of New Zealand’s best backyards. And yet, that’s exactly what organisers of this event are expecting as they encourage all comers to take planes, trains and automobiles (or boats) to Queens Wharf this month. And, in addition to the journey, this expo is all about the destinations, with a wide range of travel-related exhibitions featured. If we didn’t need a holiday after negotiating city traffic, we certainly will afterwards! See thetravelexpo. co.nz for more information.

Q&A

with botany town centre manager

Bronwyn Anchor

Negotiating the stormy seas of the retail world requires more than just a capable captain – a sturdy anchor is also invaluable. Fortunately, Botany Town Centre benefits from both, thanks to the efforts of its centre manager, Bronwyn Anchor.

Considering there are four major malls and various smaller centres nearby, has Botany Town Centre found a niche supported by locals? The town centre format of Botany accommodates a range of community activities and we enjoy strong community links and involvement. We see the centre as a hub for the local community to come together and spend quality time with family and friends. We host a number of community events throughout the year. Our research tells us that, for a regional centre, Botany has a strong retail offering, with 25 percent more floor space than a typical regional centre, with a high proportion of prominent national retailers. What business background did you have before taking on the top job at Botany Town Centre? Before joining AMP Capital at Botany Town Centre, my more recent roles included six years with Westfield, where I worked in three shopping centres, including Riccarton Shopping Centre during the earthquakes. Before that I worked at Flight Centre NZ in finance, retail management and other roles for 10 years. Are you mostly confined to your office or is there time to move around the mall meeting/greeting tenants? That’s the beauty of my job: how many people get paid to spend time in a shopping centre? It’s great to not be desk-bound and I walk the centre every day to enjoy its buzz and the social aspects. Do you have any special interests and do you have as much time for these as you would like? I recently fell in love with Maraetai, which I think is the best-kept secret in Auckland, so I sold up from central Auckland to live the dream out east. I have restored an unloved house to its former glory and enjoy spending time in and around the water, running with our dog, swimming and paddleboarding. There are never enough

6 | eastlife | november 2015

hours in the day, so I make the most of daylight saving. How stressful is your job and have you thought of throwing in the towel and taking on a less pressured role? I am fortunate to have one of the most experienced, supportive and passionate centre management teams in the country. This keeps the stress levels manageable. Our customers and retailers also take much pride in Botany Town Centre, and their ‘ownership’ of the centre is a great support. It’s certainly a challenge to drive away from the beautiful beach I live near each morning, but to date I’ve kept turning up for work! Do you have time to enjoy centre events? How important are they? Events are at the core of what we do to complement our retail and hospitality offers, and they’re the best way to connect with the community and make Botany Town Centre a community hub. We really try to create events that are family-focused and suited to a growing and diverse community, and I particularly love the lifestyle-centric events such as the Summer Fun Run. The launch of the Botany Community Garden earlier this year was a highlight, and our recent Botany Design Awards were again a big success. Everyday Heroes Day celebrates the people who keep us safe in the community and is always a special day. Every event has a place in my heart! The centre has undergone considerable changes and upgrades in its retail layout over the last 2-3 years. What changes would you like to see in future and are there fresh plans in the pipeline? As with most shopping centres, development is key to remaining relevant and competitive. We have a development master plan that has our continual focus. We are currently working on a couple of exciting proposals including another restaurant – watch this space!

Would you welcome better transport links and would you encourage a rail connection between the centre and the new Manukau station or even to the central city? Botany Town Centre is a key transport hub, particularly for buses, as it covers services to a wide range of regions. Bus services have increased from 233 on a typical day in 2007 to 456 today, and this continues to increase. We would welcome rail to our doorstep, however this is outside of the scope of the AucklandManukau Eastern Transport Initiative.

I would work closely with the Government on improving/increasing social housing and housing affordability. I think the current mayor’s focus on public transport improvements is to be applauded. If you could ask any three people (living or dead) to dinner, who would you invite and why? Ellen DeGeneres: because she is quirky, funny and inspiring, and a great role model for just being herself – Graham Norton for the same reasons, if Ellen was busy.

Is online shopping a threat to the future of the mall?

John Key: because there’re a few things I’d like him to do; I have a list!

We believe shopping in store is still a significant leisure activity for Kiwis and shopping centres are still where people go to meet their friends, shop and enjoy the environment.

Kate Sheppard, leader of New Zealand’s women’s suffrage: for helping Kiwi women gain the right to vote in New Zealand. I am proud that we were the first country in the world to give voting rights to women.

If you could be mayor of the SuperCity for a day, what would be your first priority and why?

And, just to be cheeky, a fourth: Jean Batten, our greatest aviator. www.eastlife.co.nz

EXHIBITION LAUNCHES artist’s biography When an exhibition of paintings by artist Peter Hall opened at the Monterey Gallery, in Howick last month, the occasion went hand in hand with the launch of a short, and absolutely stunning, biography on Peter’s fascinating life and career – see story pages 14-15. Photographer Garry Brandon captured the event.

Jazz artist opens new chapter It’s been more than two years since EastLife’s NATALIE BRITTAN discovered the delightful paintings of a jazz aficionado who has led a fascinating life to say the least. She caught up with the still local artist recently to chat about his newly launched biography. When a large, smooth-covered book landed on my desk, memories from my first encounter with its subject the multitalented Peter Hall, flooded back. I recalled a narrow hallway in Mellons Bay, covered from ceiling to floor in paintings and a small studio with a red chest of drawers brimming with jazz CDs. Now, in “downsized” Shelly Park, it’s almost déjà vu. We enter a not dissimilar hallway and weave through the garage to Peter’s studio furnished with the same red, lacquered drawers. He still turns up the music while painting – “fortunately the lady next door likes the music I play!” he quips. This time round, everything seems less chaotic, more organised. Perhaps, I muse, it’s this new order that has helped Peter organise his thoughts to produce his biography, My Life, Art and Love of Jazz. Or it could be lady luck and wife-to-be, Lynne Hodges, who has been the driver for the book. “I had this idea for Peter to write down all the special wonderful things that have happened in his life because it’s really been quite extraordinary,” says Lynne. Calling on Lynne’s relative, long-time publisher and journalist, Reg Birchfield for assistance, a plan was hatched 12 months ago to produce a tome that would celebrate the colourful life that Peter has woven. From surviving the London bombings during World War II and watching jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald and Stan Getz perform, through to work which has taken him around the world, designing fabrics and prints that have subsequently sold in large department stores such as Marks and Spencer and House of Fraser, Peter’s story is nothing short of breathtaking. and Maurice Kane in New Zealand. In fact, many may well recognise the Jenny Wren collection or the Verdure (“a Mary Quantlike daisy”) print, which has been revived and is on display at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Wearing many hats – painter, textile designer, drummer, teacher, director, farmer, husband and father – Peter has shown it is possible to squeeze a great deal into one lifetime. “Time is so valuable particularly if you have any creativity. To get up and create something or respond to that creativity is just marvellous and I’ve managed to do it all my life,” he says. And Peter’s biography reads like a movie – his conversational dialogue takes readers through the different periods in his life, juxtaposed with paintings, textile designs, photographs, posters and memorabilia, all artfully arranged by his son, Daniel (yes, a designer too!). “It’s a coffee table book with words and pictures,” says Peter modestly. While Peter may call it that, my editor goes as far as saying she could see “musical notes just tripping off the page”. Above all, Peter hopes to contribute something that future generations can enjoy, a philosophy he adopts in painting too. “If you’re adding something to the world instead of taking it out then you have purpose in life.” Of course, this purpose-driven creative is not about to rest on his laurels. He has ideas for other books already forming and painting is still a regular activity. “There’ll be another mountain to climb. I won’t sit around waiting for it, that’s for sure!” And when he does, I again hope to be there to tell his new story. • My Life, Art and Love of Jazz retails for $40 and is available at selected bookstores including Readaway Books and Paper Plus in Howick, and Whitcoulls in Botany. www.eastlife.co.nz

LITERARY GEMS – FROM PETER HALL’S BIOGRAPHY • “During the night, dad arrived home, his greatcoat covered in dust and peppered with shrapnel slashes, his helmet dented and bashed. To my young eyes, he always looked exhausted.”

• “These food parcels were always enthusiastically and ceremoniously welcomed into the house. We didn’t get them as regularly as we should have. Some simply didn’t make it to Britain. All too often, Nazi u-boats sent them to the bottom of the Atlantic.” • “But life outside the classroom was anything but boring. I was a bit of a beatnik and dressed and acted like I thought an art student should. Cigarettes, generous quantities of beer, wild student parties and a goodly number of girlfriends provided seriously attractive options.” • “I purchased a second hand drum set from a retired dance band drummer and joined a band. It took me two years of cycling 10 miles each day to pay off my purchase in 10 shilling instalments. Our band practised in a local church hall which we sometimes shared with a group who we didn’t really rate. They went on to become the Rolling Stones.” • “The design that really established my professional career was created the following year. It was called “Tambour” and consisted mainly of a series of lines. It was very simple but it won a Cotton Board award. I still don’t think it was a very good design but it featured in Tatler magazine and generated great personal publicity.” • On a thrilling encounter with jazz musician Stan Getz: “He’d been skiing in Switzerland and broken his leg or something. He turned up in a plaster cast and played sitting on a chair. He’d brought a group of young musicians with him. The place went wild. Everyone was standing up and cuddling each other.... I’ve been hooked ever since.” • “The boys moved into the barn – across the paddock from the main house – where they entertained mates and maidens and listened to excessively loud music. Family apartheid suited us all perfectly.”

Tea and pee a powerful formula When Linley Jones soon departs her home of more than four decades, she will leave behind a lavish garden bursting with of beautiful shrubs and trees but she won’t be leaving behind her book collection, including her own published junior fiction and shorts stories for adults. Prior to the packing, HELEN PERRY talked to the Bucklands Beach author about her latest publication, Apple Tea and Camel Pee. There’s no doubt that a book title such as Apple Tea and Camel Pee raises questions...and eyebrows. But from where did it spring? For those who take the time to become immersed in Linley Jones new release, in particular the short story from which the book takes its name, the origin soon becomes sadly, painfully and shamefully clear. Our – that’s the collective human ‘our’ – treatment of the elderly and infirm is well known (if not always publically acknowledged), for not only being persistently patronising, but often dismally degrading. And, in this brief but poignant short story, Linley captures the very essence of our frequent (mis)behaviour towards those in decline. Perhaps, this pearl of a short story will prompt inner fears in those brave enough to think ahead to what their own decline into old age might bring, but Linley rather hopes it will precipitate a kinder understanding of old age and fresh respect for lives frequently lived beyond the knowledge or interest of carers. “I was once at a function where some of the elderly seemed to be snubbed by the young. But I happened to know that these older women had done amazing things in their lives. For example, one was a radar operator during the Second World War and another had travelled on a troop ship to care for wounded soldiers. But, now, because of their age, it appeared they had a ‘cloak of invisibility’ cast over them.

filled dining room looking out on to a cottage garden that is full of colour and harmony, I can’t help but appreciate Linley’s ability to disconnect from all that beauty to cram, so succinctly, into an acorn cup what dying days may hold, whilst remaining so tremendously upbeat, herself. Of course, there’s also a lot of ‘age’ in her garden to rejoice over – flora planted decades ago just like some of the ideas for her stories which have grown and flourished over time. For example the idea for her first book, PS I love You Gramps was geminated when Linley and her husband, Leslie spent four months sailing around New Zealand.

“So, yes, I wrote this story, hoping to make young people more aware of the importance of valuing the elderly in society.”

“We visited a calf club day on Stewart Island and while wandering around, I told one little girl her horse was lovely to which she replied, very poker faced, “it’s not a horse, it’s a rabbit” And indeed her horse did have ‘rabbit ears’, a grandfather’s kindness to a grand-daughter, who desperately wanted to own a rabbit but had only a horse for Ag Day!”

And, sitting in the author’s sun-

were the first to be published nearly 20 years ago, initially by Shortland Publications, which was taken over by US publishers, McGrawHill, from whom she still receives royalties.

stories and I’m especially grateful to Adrienne Morris from AM Publishing who assisted in producing it.”

Her stories are often based on family and personal experiences with some becoming required reading in schools. While full of adventure, they also contain the subtle lessons of life that confront most people as they grow and mature, such as her latest children’s book, On The Edge.

Although writing has always been part of her life even before being published – “frequent letters to the editor kept me busy!” – Linley is also a keen sailor, she and her husband having enjoyed several long sojourns sailing around the Pacific and beyond. They also enjoy tramping and revel in time spent with their four grandchildren – all living overseas.

“When my first book was published relatively easily, I thought it was always going to be a breeze, but it isn’t that way at all. However, when a project does come to fruition it is immensely satisfying.”

In addition, Linley’s garden is a picture, backing on to Howick Golf Club which affords it a wonderful green vista beyond the blooms. And it’s in the garden where she often gains inspiration.

Well-known in junior fiction circles, Linley has also written for the adult market – her short stories winning literary awards and accolades.

“I’ll be weeding or planting and suddenly have a thought. That’s why I always have paper and pen handy; I grab them, scribble down an idea then carry on. Of course, the germ of a story can spring from anywhere; you just have to be ready for it.”

However, Apple Tea and Camel Pee is an adult first which is entirely her own work. “Previous works have appeared in collections of short stories and poems that have included various authors,” she explains. “But, finally, I had enough for a book of all my own

Rafter’s current aspirations It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll. However, buoyant in mood, one rapid runner is confident of cool runnings to come – JON RAWLINSON explains. Rocking her raft down some of the most treacherous waterways in the world is second nature to Sarah Christie. And, yet, during the upcoming IRF World Rafting Championship (WRC) in Indonesia (Nov 29 – Dec 8), the ex-Macleans College student will meet challenges around every bend.

Love of the rocks

“There’s a lot of tough competition in the Open Women’s grade, so we’ll have to paddle to our strengths and place in all four of our races to accumulate enough points to ensure we come home with a medal,” she says.

Follow any river downstream and it’ll lead (eventually) to the sea; follow your dreams, however, and the whole world awaits!

“In Indonesia, we’ll have a lot to learn [about the river] ... and fast! Achieving the cleanest runs takes incredible teamwork, power, and speed. We can’t wait for the competition to begin! Our passion is paddling; we will be ready for the mental and physical exhaustion and prepared to paddle our hearts out!” During the event, the women’s team will attempt to win a fifth world title. Since first competing in WRC events in 1999, the team has scooped a remarkable medal haul of 10 gold, 10 silver and four bronze medals across sprint, head-to-head, slalom and downriver disciplines. Sarah says she will need to draw on every drop of experience gleaned over her 12-year career as a river guide. “Although I have competed in national competitions for several years, this is my first year at the World Rafting Champs. I didn’t compete last time – even though the event was right here in Rotorua – because I was pregnant. Now that my son’s nearly two, it’s time to race again! “My strength lies is my river guiding experience and ability to read the river. I sit on the back left, which is a pivotal position, where my role is to power the raft forward and, at the same time, make correctional strokes to keep it running straight through the rapids.” www.eastlife.co.nz

Raised in Bucklands Beach, New Zealand representative white water rafter, Sarah Christie, began to dabble with the paddle after moving to Rotorua. Taking to the sport like a duck to water, she began a 12-year career as a guide.

Above: Sarah Christie – New Zealand White Water Rafter. Above right: Sarah (left) guides enthusiastic youngsters down Kaituna River. Of course, solid teamwork will prove vital. Unfortunately, while many international teams are able to train every day, this is not so easily done for Sarah and the rest of the crew – Nikki Kelly, Sarah Uhl, Anne Cairns, Nikki Whitehead, Marnie Fornusek, Corrina Gage and Kelly Wood. The team is based throughout the greater Bay of Plenty area.

And balancing work and sport with home life can also prove tricky. “I am not going to lie, it is challenging! I have two sons, Taylor (18) – who travelled with me to Japan and Canada, and has also been keen on rafting since he was four – and Adam, two in December,” she says.

“We need to work together, focusing on technique, making sure we are all on the same page, paddling and thinking as one when it comes to running lines and rapids down the river.

“Having a tight schedule and a good plan helps, and my partner, James, is hugely supportive. He and my friends and family help take care of Adam, while I’m out training. And I’m also very lucky to have the support of my employers at Tamaki Maori Village.”

“We all work fulltime, so our main opportunity to train is at the weekends. In some ways it is a disadvantage, although when we do get together we make the most of our time, as we know it’s especially valuable.”

As amateurs, Sarah and team rely on sponsorship and fundraising to make their way at the Worlds. To help these courageous ladies (or the Masters team) achieve their goal for gold, see givealittle.co.nz and search for NZ Women’s Raft Team.

“When I was 17, I began an after school job for a company called Adventure Photography. I went white water rafting for the first time on the Kaituna River, and I was hooked! The following year I started training as a guide. I worked in Japan for two seasons, in 2000-01, and three in Canada, 03-05, while returning to Rotorua during the off season – following the summer, basically,” she says. While falling in love with the wildlife and scenery of Canada, Japan offered an altogether different challenge for the intrepid traveller. “Japan was a real eye opener. Initially, I couldn’t speak Japanese and most clients had limited or no English, so every night I’d try to memorise safety instructions in Japanese, just hoping it would all sink in!” Although Sarah’s career has taken a new turn – she now negotiates the business world, working in a sales and marketing role in Rotorua – Sarah’s latest on-water challenge is perhaps her greatest, attempting to secure gold at the IRF World Rafting Championship (see main story). eastlife | november 2015 |

Reel-ising screen dream Since Niu Han, first came to grips with a camera, the Pakurangaraised filmmaker has been making quite a scene on screen, as JON RAWLINSON explains.

Getting those last few scenes in the can can be tricky for anyone intent on making all the right movies in showbiz. And Pakuranga’s Niu Han is doubly loaded as he takes an epic shot at success beside the canals of Venice. Following critical acclaim, Han was recently given the chance to present his latest project (A Most Peculiar Man) to Biennale College – Cinema and Alberto Barbera, director of the prestigious Venice Film Festival. Should his work make the ‘cut’, Han’s team will receive €150,000 to produce the film for screening at

the fest’ (August-September next year). The team will also be invited to Venice to attend workshops in December and January. Han says he was “thrilled” his project could soon be developed, complete with a bigger budget than he is used to. “I worked on this film for years, but I put it aside because it needs a certain amount of funding to realise. “I am now writing my new draft of the full script, which I hope to turn into the best possible version, but selection [for festival inclusion] depends on many factors.”

Han’s team is one of 12 selected from among young filmmakers worldwide; only three will progress. “All the projects are exciting pieces of cinema. We all made friends and were given advice by amazing

professionals; I would congratulate any team that wins the funding,” Han says. “I will be really thrilled to have the opportunity to make A Most Peculiar Man and show it in Venice because I know it will make a mindblowing film!”

Cast and crew on set of Land of Nobody at Pakuranga College. Rex, front right; Han, back second from right and in photo below.

Praise from PaK’s Mac “He still calls me Mr Mac!,” exclaims Land of Nobody actor, Rex McIntosh. “Even though he’s around 30, Han is so respectful.”

When the former Pakuranga College drama teacher heard ex pupil, Niu Han, needed a hand with a film in 2013, Rex was amazed. However, the opportunity was just too good to pass up.

Han’s next likely release, Land of Nobody, (in post production) holds special significance. The film was shot largely at his alma mater. “All the school scenes were filmed at Pakuranga College with the help of marvellous students from the drama department and the school orchestra.

Although now primarily based in Beijing, Han spent his formative years in Pakuranga, where his family still resides. It was during his school days at Pakuranga College that his interest in film was first fuelled, however he originally intended to play a different part in the art world. “When my classmates David Collins and Jim Benson made their featurelength film Doomsday and premiered it locally, I realised movies could actually be made by ‘normal’ people! “Painting was my passion and it still is in some ways; however, cinema is fluid painting in motion and in time, with a giant canvas illuminated in the dark. I find the medium very beautiful.” His first foray into filmmaking came while attending Elam School of Fine Arts. “I began making short films out of frustration from lack of meaning in ‘making art’. They [his films] were almost ‘too narrative’ for the art www.eastlife.co.nz

Nobody, (in post production) holds special significance. The film was shot largely at his alma mater. “All the school scenes were filmed at Pakuranga College with the help of marvellous students from the drama department and the school orchestra. My former English teacher [Rex McIntosh – see secondary story] was brilliant with his performance. There is a lyrical sense about him; I’ve always admired Mr McIntosh,” says Han. context, but too ‘artsy’ for the filmschool crowd, so it was a constant struggle to find a comfortable place to be. But I had a most enjoyable time studying. “Later, when living in New York, I went to a night school film programme and that was when I began to think I could become a filmmaker for real.” A string of films followed with Han undertaking a range of roles. However, his auteur focus has resulted as much from necessity as by design. “I write, direct, shoot and edit my films for practical reasons. I have done everything out of both choice and necessity. Then again, many respected filmmakers make films this way, even when they do have the budget. In future, if I’m able to pay professionals, I would still be happy to work with like-minded producers, cinematographers and editors.” Han’s next likely release, Land of

“Land of Nobody, is about the meaning of life beyond success and failures. It’s a celebration of our human limitations, and I hope people can connect to that comforting feeling that it really is okay for us to be who we are.” While Han waits to hear whether his Italian adventure is set to continue, he’s hopeful that his life to date will prove just a prologue to an intriguing career. However, he is keen to return to New Zealand to settle down one day. In the meantime, he doesn’t even know the meaning of the words ‘go Hollywood’! “I’m not sure about what the term ‘go Hollywood’ means! Hollywood is home to many of the greatest films, and art-cinema can often be a bore. “Everyday I’m just endlessly thankful that I can keep doing what I’m doing, which is all about trying to make compelling cinema that feels human and brings people together.”

“It was like a bolt out of the blue when my agent said Han was trying to get in touch about working with him on Land of Nobody. It surprised me because he was not that outgoing at school, although I did try to bring him out of his shell,” says Rex. “Han said I had inspired him to get into filmmaking, which was very flattering, and I was pleased to accept the part.” Taking on the role of Mr Birnam, Rex soon found himself in a story billed as: ‘A surreal fairytale of complex parallel worlds.’ “I was a bit surprised by the storyline. At one point I found myself sitting in the assembly hall at Pakuranga College talking to a ghost! I love such things in acting; very surreal!” In fact, the college was more than just an ‘old haunt’ for Rex; it became the primary setting for the film and featured other staff members – including Mike Young who provided the music – and students. Rex enjoyed every minute of the project; working with an exciting, young director who allowed him plenty of room to flesh out his character with adlibs. “Han’s totally positive, enthusiastic and works with his actors to help bring out the best in them,” says Rex. “It was a delight to work with him.” Land of Nobody is currently in post production while the sound track is completed. Han hopes it will be released soon. eastlife | november 2015 |

Great War realism impacts on visitors To ensure her children know their own country and all it has to offer, SARAH ELLIS headed to Wellington with the family primarily to extend her 10-yearold’s interest in politics and see the unique Te Papa Exhibition commemorating 100 years since the beginning of The Great War.

Arriving in the capital city at lunchtime we took the time to walk the short distance from our hotel to The Beehive and Parliament buildings. Even though The Beehive is an iconic Wellington building on close inspection you can see why it has been voted the world’s fourth ugliest building! Both the exterior and the interior are somewhat underwhelming and we could see why our tour guide quickly moved away from the 1970’s eyesore to the simply beautiful Parliament building. Its Edwardian-Neo Gothic style reflects our European heritage. Our free one-hour tour was informative and full of laughs as our satirical guide of 15 years’ experience explained the history of the building and our political system. Well worth the visit!

The following day the weather took a turn for the worse as Wellington’s famous southerly kicked in. So it wasn’t pleasant walking from our warm Bolton Hotel to Te Papa.

became very real and we actually felt a personal connection to them.

On reaching the museum we were glad of our 9.30am arrival, half an hour before opening time, because the queue was already forming. Of course, this was a weekend – queues are less evident during the week.

Once inside we really appreciated why ‘The Scale of Our War’ is used to describe this exhibition – the size of the figures made by Weta Workshop are immense as is their detail. Furthermore, it brought home the enormous cost of human life in the Great War, a reminder we appreciated. Combined with the individual stories of characters depicted, those soldiers

At one point I did wonder if the rawness and life-likeness was too much for our 5 year old – but at the end of the exhibition there is a bowl of Maori cleansing water to wash away some of the horrors – the spiritual effect was indeed cleansing. The exhibition is FREE and is open

Not so plain flying Forget wild Vikings pillaging foreign shores and sub zero temperatures, when it comes to creating a more Nordic experience for passengers, Finnair has raised the bar. When passengers board the airline’s new Airbus A350 XWBs, they will be greeted by clouds drifting across a blue sky throughout the cabin. The latest LED lighting – including more than 16 million colours – sets the mood, with scenarios including the Northern Lights, all developed to suit time of day, destination or season. However this bright idea is just one of many designed to conjure up thoughts of the north, Finnair’s chief commercial officer, Juha Järvinen, explains.

‘ for four years so there is plenty of time to see it, but I suspect New Zealanders may go more than once during this time as there is a lot to take in both visually and emotionally. On day three we visited Weta Workshop, or Wellywood as it has been dubbed. Our tour guide also provided commentary about the city including the hotel and room number of actor Viggo Mortensen while he was here filming Lord of the Rings – she assured us she wasn’t a ‘stalker’ just an enthusiastic fan – Yeah right! The same afternoon we headed away from the squeaky clean Lambton Quay to Cuba Street. Littered with quirky cafes, bars and restaurants it wasn’t hard to find a nice place for lunch. The previous night we dined at Logan Brown enjoying the $45pp Bistro Menu – couldn’t fault the food, atmosphere or location – the ‘Tastes to Share’ entrée was mouth-watering and certainly had us salivating for the next course. The Wellington trip provided us all with a ‘favourite’ excursion; mine was the Sir Peter Jackson exhibition at the Dominion Museum, a journey through the www.eastlife.co.nz

four years of The Great War. The door of the exhibition opens and visitors are welcomed into 1914 and the cobbled streets of Belgium. As we wended our way through the dimly lit street and past charming shops, we were treated to recordings of people chatting and the hustle and bustle of the market place. But along the way the real story starts with the assassination in Sarajevo of Archduke Ferdinand and the sparking of the First World War. As we progressed through the exhibition, we were confronted with sights and sounds of war, including the trenches with gruesomely injured soldiers. We walked over encased dirt taken from the battlefields of Bellevue Spur, Passchendaele and were stunned by the limited food rations dished out to the men who were then expected to go into battle – nourishment was small indeed. This journey back in time included viewing original black and white photographs that Sir Peter has had coloured. These photos were some of the most haunting of war – seeing the blue, brown and green eyes of those young New Zealanders staring into the camera,

The massive, lifelike replicas of soldiers at war – their rage, fear and pain seeming so utterly real – have visitors gasping at the graphic scenes which are part of the Te Papa exhibition commemorating 100 years since the start of the First World War.”

made the horrors of war and these young soldiers so very real. It’s as if we could see into their souls. The exhibition finishes with a gallery of photos that come with a warning due to the graphic nature and a fantastic replica of Chunuk Bair at Gallipoli. It was both humbling and horrific.

“With the Finnair A350, we want to offer the best of Nordic hospitality. Our aim has been to consider every little detail, from the personalised service by our cabin crew to the details of the cabin design. The Finnair A350 experience is all about passenger comfort.” The extra wide body of the A350 allows for wider seats with extra legroom. Passengers can enjoy state-of-the-art Nordic Sky seatback entertainment systems, and partake of a menu featuring delicacies including vendace roe mousse, warm smoked arctic char and wild reindeer. In addition the A350 signature drink, Blue Sky, is a mix of French champagne and Finnish blueberry liquor. And, female passengers in business class can even take advantage of a dedicated Ladies’ Room, stocked with cosmetics and other supplies. Kiwis looking to scan Scandinavian vistas will be able to board bus on the Helsinki-Shanghai route from November 21, 2015.

While the First World War exhibitions were the highlight of our Wellington visit, there is a great deal more to see and do in the capital and much of it is free of charge. So, if you can snaffle a cheap flight for a weekend or a few days during the week, do take in the exhibitions and peruse some of the inner city sights; it shouldn’t cost a great deal. Walk the streets and the waterfront, try a cafe or two and I’m sure you’ll love Wellington as much as we did! eastlife | november 2015 |

Fin-filled experience Spotting the dorsal fins of one of the world’s most beloved mammals on the Hauraki Gulf is no ‘fluke’ thanks to the assistance of qualified guides, as JoN RAWLINSoN discovered during an experience which provided more than simply surface appeal.

FERRY ACRoSS THE HARBoUR To ToWERING RANGIToTo It’s a beautiful day, you’re at a loose end and the sparkling Waitemata beckons. or perhaps it’s family time and the kids are looking for new mountains to climb. So, why not hop a Fuller’s ferry to beautiful Rangitoto, the island that Aucklanders can see from almost every part of the city but which many have never visited?

There are sandy coves too and great walking tracks including a hike to the summit. Alternatively, take Fullers 4WD ‘train’ journey up to the base of the summit where it’s a short walk along a wooden boardwalk with steps to the very top – the views are spectacular.

For a truly different experience and a real change of scenery, the 600 year old volcano, which forms the distinctive island, will enchant conservationists, nature lovers, trampers and active youngsters too!

Now that the warmer days are here, there’s nothing more invigorating than a Rangitoto ramble – just pack yourself a lunch and a drink, be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and head downtown to the Fullers ticket office.

A pest-free sanctuary, Rangitoto’s unique landscape of rugged lava crops and lush native bush is home to a variety of wildlife and visitors are asked to exercise great caution so they don’t inadvertently carry any pests across from the mainland.

And if you’re savvy, as well as content to enjoy an off peak sailing, you might even grab a ‘hot seat deal’ by going online (conditions apply). For more information on sailings to Rangitoto Island visit www.fullers.co.nz.

THE HAURAKI GULF STARTS WITH US

“Fancy a little fish and ships?” I asked the missus earlier this year. of course, further explanations were required, so I presented her with vouchers for Dolphin Planet’s Dolphin Watch cruise on the Hauraki Gulf. our first voyage, unfortunately, developed into more ships than fish (yes, readers... I know they’re mammals!) as no dolphins were spotted. However, we still greatly enjoyed the day – it had been a long time since we landlubbers had set to sea. Fortunately, Dolphin Planet offers return vouchers should Flipper and Co be otherwise engaged, so we again set about our (albeit limited) stevedoring, preparing for another pop at taking a shot with cameras at the ready. We were soon rewarded as a pod of common dolphins practically surrounded our vessel. Ducking and diving alongside and in front of the boat, these playful creatures were a delight to behold and stayed around for quite some time. We certainly never tired of watching them. And, yes, we’ve all seen them on TV or at marine parks, but there’s simply no substitute for observing wild dolphins in their own habitat. of course, the star attraction was our finned friends, but I was particularly impressed by the hospitality. From initial emails and text messages with

directions and weather updates, to a fine spread at lunch, and the chatty, knowledgeable guides, Dolphin Planet’s customer service was fantastic. And, thanks to crash courses on marine biology (on board), and books, passengers were well informed and entertained with fun facts. I was also very impressed by Dolphin Planet’s child-friendly approach. Not only were children effortlessly enlisted as transfixed, keen-eyed lookouts – and, later, as temporary captains, taking turns at steering the boat home – they also revelled in the chance to shout ‘jump!’ to intrepid, bungy-bound tourists from beneath the Harbour Bridge. Well done Dolphin Planet, thanks again for a ‘brine’ time on the ocean waves.

Local journalist, RoBYN YoUSEF has visited Samoa on several occasions over the past three years and admits she is smitten by its beauty and, in particular, by the people, or what is called, The Samoan Way. on her most recent visit she dined at new resort Return to Paradise and uncovered a delightful tale. The pristine beauty of secluded Samoan beaches has long been admired but way back in 1953 the Pacific nation attracted international fame after the movie Return to Paradise was filmed there.

Return to Paradise

– ACTRESS REVISITS 62 YEARS LATER

Sixty two years on a reunion of remaining cast members, crew and descendants was held at the elite resort named for the film and opened last year on the site of filming. Importantly, American actress, Roberta Haynes, who starred opposite Gary Cooper as the dusky romantic heroine in the movie, was among those who returned to Matautu Beach near the Samoan village of Lefaga where the film was shot. Now aged 86, her visit was sponsored by Samoa Pure and Fijian Airlines with the three-day event attracting about 100 guests, including three main members of the original cast and crew members along with family members and descendants. The $20million, 100% locally-owned resort, was officially opened for business in october last year. Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, presided over the special dedication service at the Lefaga Village. Fans of the NZ MasterChef television series had a tantalising peek at the resort earlier last year when contestants cooked there on the golden sands of picturesque Matautu Beach. A 2012 episode of the American television series, Survivor, was also filmed on this beach. The resort, itself, is set on 40 acres on the southern coast of Upolu – 25 minutes from Faleolo International Airport and a 45-minute drive from Apia Wharf.

Return to Paradise Resort back earlier this year they were well established – exotic, lush and colourful. I watched the sunset from the Rock Pool Cocktail Bar and I think I also witnessed a marriage proposal taking place in a fale-for-two set on the black lava rocks. Return to Paradise enjoys a magically romantic setting and, appropriately, future plans include a glass wedding chapel to be built on a rocky outcrop. The resort has already hosted several weddings (for local Samoans and for overseas visitors) and both local and international conferences.

I first visited the resort in August 2014 and was absolutely transfixed by the natural beauty of the setting, along with the respect shown for Samoan culture in its design.

The big three-day reunion raised the resort’s profile even further. It included a charity auction and gala night at which Ms Haynes was guest speaker and where a Richard McCaw All Black jersey was sold at the auction for $2400.

The tropical gardens were newly planted then, but when I went

Elegantly-appointed, Return to Paradise offers four swimming pools,

massage facility, on-site restaurant, conference facilities (notably the Gary Cooper Room) and two bars – including the ‘swim-up option’. Hiking, diving and snorkelling are all on offer along with reef fishing and beach volleyball. There are even impressive Blow Holes to visit. The sumptuous rooms feature marble floors, leather furniture, silk curtains and lavishly-styled bathrooms. All have a patio offering sea or pool views and some have plunge pools. However, it is the island ambience and the use of traditional Samoan design which is special. The restaurant is built in the fale style with carved posts and sennit-bound ceiling work with ocean breezes wafting through open walls. Guests can take part in regular Fiafia nights, which include Polynesian buffet meals and Samoan fire dancing. The entire project is all about “Samoan pride” with most of

the staff consisting of villagers. The owners work closely with the tribes from whom they lease the land and the entire project has been carefully managed to maintain the natural beauty of the location. When guests leave the resort staff want them to remember those island sunsets, but hope their most vivid memories will be of the Samoan people and their welcoming ways. or, as they say there, “Fa’a Samoa” – The Samoan Way. What’s more, while Roberta Haynes said at the reunion she probably wouldn’t make another visit to Samoa, she added that her heart had been stolen by the Samoan Way. She then paid the island high honour by saying she had requested, that on her death, her ashes be spread on Matautu Beach, such was the impact of this beautiful location on a beautiful lady. eastlife | november 2015 |

Summer’s coming and so is the sun with all those harmful UV rays. That means it’s time to protect our skin and, just as importantly, our eyes! Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is the enemy when it comes to the eyes and though a hat will help, it won’t fully protect against reflected UVR. Christmas shopping smarts! Six weeks to Christmas and some folk will be totally organised. A good many more will still be rushing around on Christmas Eve in a last minute giftbuying panic. So check out these tip to make Christmas shopping a breeze • Gift dilemmas calls for exchange cards. That way recipients can swap their gift for something else. An official exchange voucher is best but if a store doesn’t issue them, check if a swap can be made by presenting the receipt. Also ask what time frame is available for exchanges. • Buying a gift card? Be sure to check the expiry date. Short expiry dates mean the card can become worthless before it can be redeemed. If receiving a gift card use it as soon as possible to avoid losing it. • Extended warranties are often offered to purchasers of electronic goods. Remember, that the Consumer Guarantees Act means retailers have to repair or replace faulty goods or refund your money which means an extended warranty may not be worthwhile. • When buying for children, safety is of utmost importance. Watch out for toys with small parts that can be easily pulled off and swallowed. If it has batteries, make sure the child can’t get to them. Keep replacement batteries well out of reach. Check recommended age levels. • Buying on line occasionally has its problems such as the purchase that never turned up! And sometimes what arrives is not what is expected – it may fail to look like the on-screen photo or be nothing like what was described. If the retailer refuses to put things right, contact your bank for a credit-card or debit-card chargeback. If a claim is accepted, the money will be returned. An unsuccessful claim may cost $5-$10. • Under the Consumer Guarantees Act, online retailers that arrange delivery have to ensure items arrive on time and in good condition. Under the Act, retailers have to put things right when an item arrives damaged, not the courier. If you have problems with an overseas trader, you can visit econsumer.gov for information about consumer rights in other countries. • Always check receipts and bank statements. It’s a busy time of year and mistakes happen.

Neil Diamond

– you are still the words, you are still the tune

Like many other baby boomers, HELEN PERRY ran the peak hour traffic gauntlet heading for the Vector Arena last month for a second taste of Neil Diamond glitter. His previous 2011 concert prompted her review to be in letter format. This month she repeats the exercise delighted that the singer’s return to Auckland gave her husband a chance to hear a ’70s fav still doing his stuff and pretty well too!

Dear Mr Diamond, Thanks goodness your heeded my letter of four years ago when I requested, no begged, that you return to the New Zealand stage at least one more time. With the passing of decades,, I’d have sworn thoughts of you on a hot August night would leave my head. I was wrong. And I while one thing might have made me forget – red, red wine (and, in this instance, a crackling rosie) – really, all I’ve been able to think of these past few years is another concert so the man about my house could stop feeling so hard done by that he’d missed one hot February night at Vector in 2011.

Thankfully, I did not have to beg or borrow from friends (or the bank manager) for funds to send said man to far flung parts to hear you sing. You came back! As compelling and as gutsy (well almost) as last time and my man was there to hear you. Perhaps there wasn’t quite the same level of energy or fulsome voice of concerts past but I didn’t spot a person in the packed stadium (and most were middle aged or more) who wasn’t whistling, hollering, stamping or applauding your 10 carat performance. Yes at 74 you can still give younger men, of similar showbiz ilk, a run for their money. In fact, I don’t think Monday night’s audience sat down for too long at

all – they were there to cheer and revere the man who, for many, was heartthrob material a generation ago. And, it seemed to me you were still very much the heart throb again in Auckland last month – polished, pumped and packing Hot August Night charisma as if it were yesterday – and again you gave a concert performance that will, no doubt, last a lifetime for those who were there. Some might have thought the lighting, the timing, the razza-ma-tazz a little too slick but not this chick. I’m all for more of Diamond – you, cherry, cherry, still tug at the heartstrings of nostalgia. Helen Perry www.eastlife.co.nz

SIX WAYS To ELIMINATE SIBLING RIVALRY Rockabye Early Learning Centre takes the care and education of young children seriously. Today, centre owner CARYN MAWKES has helpful tips on dealing with sibling rivalry. It is every parent’s dream of a wonderful relationship between their children, but disagreements are unavoidable between siblings. Children are likely to fight over toys and tease one another. Despite a parent’s best efforts, sibling rivalry is a natural part of growing up and reasons why siblings fight include: • new baby – to an older sibling, the arrival of a new baby can mean sudden competition for parental affection and attention. • age – assertive two-year-olds and bossy five-year-olds may be a bad mix, or hormonal teens and nosy younger siblings. • stress – disruptions at home can turn a child’s world upside down and lead to increased fighting. • hunger, boredom or lack of sleep – the usual triggers behind grouchy children won’t do sibling relationships any favours. • parents – children are notoriously alert to any signs of parental unfairness. They may feel you’re giving more time, attention or material goods on their sibling.

tips to minimise sibling rivalry: • New baby – talk to your child about the baby’s impending arrival and their special role as big brother or sister. Set aside time with the older sibling after the baby arrives. Encourage your child to be proud to be a big brother or big sister.

• Comparing – avoid pointing out your children’s differences in front of each other. Children certainly pick up on these comparisons. Remember, fair treatment doesn’t have to mean identical treatment, e.g. older children may deserve a later bedtime. • Stay out of children’s arguments – you may have to settle a spat between toddlers or pre-schoolers, but older children will probably settle an argument themselves if left alone. If children try to involve you, explain they’re both responsible for creating the problem and ending it. Don’t take sides. • Let your children know that violence is unacceptable. Ensure children are made aware that you will not stand for any violence between them. • Set aside areas for each child – give them their own space. Keep each child’s own personal things apart from shared ones. They are more likely to want to spend time with each other if they don’t HAVE to all the time. • Have family fun together. Whether watching a movie, tossing a ball, or playing a board game, you are creating a peaceful way for children to spend time relating to each other. This can help ease tensions between them and also keeps you involved. Many children fight over parental attention but fun family activities can help reduce conflict. Make your home a safe place, where each child is seen as an equal and is appreciated, hopefully our tips will help create a harmonious home.

Early Learning Centre • Hours 7.30am-5.30pm, full & part time • Positions for children aged 0-5 years • Our family relationships are important to us. Education Review Office in April 2014 rated our centre in the top 5%. They stated: Consistent, effective teaching practice; Children happy and settled, with a strong sense of belonging; Children involved in rich literacy, numeracy and science opportunities

Wild lives revealed Proving truth can be stranger than fiction, the best biographies always offer ‘lively’ reading. This month, we take a closer look at three such books, with copies to give away.

over the top and back by Tom Jones While we still wait to find out what’s new with pussycat, what is new with sex bombing, kissing, thunderballing crooner Tom Jones will soon be revealed! Telling the tale of a boy from nowhere who rose to stardom – from humble beginnings as part of a poor, Welsh coal-mining family, to his heyday in Las Vegas and beyond – this autobiography follows the rise, fall and rise again of Tom Jones. Notes from the Velvet Underground: The Life of Lou Reed On October 27, 2013, rock ‘n’ roll icon, Lou Reed, finally ‘met his man’ and ‘rode into the sun’, passing away aged 71. In this book, biographer Howard Sounes examines the life of this fascinating singer/songwriter. From his early days with band, The Velvet Underground (at one time managed by modern art legend, Andy Warhol), through mental health problems, bisexuality, three marriages and addictions, this book explores all corners of an innovator of modern music who really was ‘a gift’ to more than just the women of this world.

• Howard Sounes: Notes from the Velvet Underground – The Life of Lou Reed | RRP $40 | Double Day / Penguin Random House

The Outsider by Frederick Forsyth Former RAF pilot and investigative journalist, Frederick Forsyth has been at the forefront of intrigue since his youth. And while his numerous novels delve into murky depths with thrills offered at every turn, his fiction perhaps pales in comparison to his own, captivating experiences during a life well and truly lived. In this autobiography, Forsyth takes us places most novels dare not tread.

The forgotten Hutchinsons Local resident and history buff CHRISTINE MILES gives the low down on the history behind some of our thoroughfares and well known places. Hutchinsons Road, with the Pakuranga Highway at one end and Bleakhouse Road at the other, was once farmed by William Walker Hutchinson (1838-1922) who, along with his wife Mary Ann, had 14 children. For such a large family, one would expect to know more than simple facts such as the family home being situated at the top of the road, that two children died in a scarlet fever epidemic, that a son missing for five long weeks was found drowned one Christmas Day – identified by his shirt stud – and, that once year, the Pakuranga Hunt dashed across their farm. However, General Hutchinson (17571832) – for whom the road was not named – is a bit more interesting in light of his connection to other military heroes recognised in Howick. Yet, he seems to have met a similar fate, of

not being remembered for anything in particular although the part he played in the Battle of Alexandria is recorded. As a volunteer Hutchinson fought alongside Abercrombie as aide-decamp and later, still voluntarily, as second-in-command, taking charge when Abercrombie fell at the Battle of Alexandria. While Abercrombie was a man who was looked up to by his men, Hutchinson was scorned. He slouched. He had ungracious manners, and a temper. In the aftermath of the Battle of Alexandria when the conflict had been won but not conclusively ended, and while Hutchinson contemplated strategy with the minimal resources available to him, the forces fretted about ‘nothing happening’. Lieutenant-General Sir John Moore

was more generous, describing him as ‘an accomplished man, and a man of sense.’ And Moore was right. The Battle of Alexandria was finally drawn to a successful conclusion under Hutchinson’s direction.

In his despatch to Lord Hobart, Hutchinson writes “… It was my Fate to succeed a Man who created such a Spirit and established such a Discipline amongst them [the Army in Egypt], that little has been left for me to perform except to follow his

As for Howick’s own Hutchinson – he too has faded into obscurity for those who did not know him; yet his name lives on, and from time to time, we remember.

After his retirement, Hutchinson faded into obscurity before his death in 1832.

Laying perfect foundation ‘ Many women, who have endured poor foundation matches, are almost certain to find a shade to suit should be delighted by the arrival of Kryolan offering 340 colours.

For me, the Kryolan HD Micro Foundation Mattifying Liquid works best for my skin and I’ve been delighted with the outcome.” – Karima Rapson

Any woman who has gone through the hit and miss of finding the perfect foundation to suit her skin tone, will know what a struggle it can be.

you want and discuss your options with a makeup expert.

For some, it takes several purchases to strike gold or rather, cream, tan, bonze or one of the multitude of subtle in-between shades that will suit them best. And some women never quite find the ideal colour.

• Never try and match your foundation colour by testing on your hand, wrist etc. the foundation must be tested on face, preferably along the jawline. Your hand can be a completely different colour and texture to your face.

What’s more, with the 2013 Census identifying 213 different ethnicities now living in New Zealand, finding the ideal shade is a struggle for about a third of women.

• Check the colour test in natural daylight; it should blend into your natural skin colour.

From the largest groups – New Zealand European, Maori, Chinese, Samoan and Indian – to the smallest, such as Chamorro, Corsican and even Inuit, women are driving a growing demand for make-up as diverse as their skin tones.

“Discovering Kryolan foundation was a breath of fresh air! There are so many colours available and I would definitely encourage anyone who has found it difficult to find a match to visit the brand’s Newmarket store for a consultation.

Yet research shows that most beauty ranges are still limited. However, international make-up brand, Kryolan has one of the widest ranges of foundation colours in New Zealand – 340 in total, across 17 different ranges.

“For me, the Kryolan HD Micro Foundation Mattifying Liquid works best for my skin and I’ve been delighted with the outcome.”

Karima Rapson who had previously struggled to find a suitable foundation, says she had long searched for a foundation that was high quality, long lasting and blended perfectly into her skin.

Diamond Jewellery

Midge Holding, a professional TV and film make-up artist for 38 years, owns the Newmarket Kryolan boutique as well as another store in Christchurch. She says unlike other brands, the Berlin-based brand makes its own make-up, using photo spectrometers to measure and monitor skin shade colours with pinpoint accuracy.

Handmade Jewellery

“About 40% of Auckland’s population is now made up of different ethnicities,” she says.

• The perfect foundation for everyday wear should look natural and blend out uneven skin tones making the skin look flawless, it should not look like a mask.

“Darker skins in particular have long been under-served, with limited ranges of colours but Kryolan is changing all that.

• Always wear a primer under your foundation.

“With our 340 colour-true foundation shades across 17 ranges for different skin types we can provide the perfect match for any and every skin tone,” Midge says. Her tips for choosing the right foundation: • Unless you know exactly what you need, do not purchase online. • Decide on what sort of coverage

BAROMETER

ALTIMETER

• If you have sensitive skin ask to have the foundation applied and wear it for a day before buying to ensure it doesn’t react with your skin. • If redness is a problem, use a yellow-based neutraliser under your foundation • Your skin can change with the seasons and as you age, so what suits you now may not always be the perfect choice for the future.

Cutting edge! Lads enlisting lady loves to help transform them from hairy beasts to top-cropped Romeos might find such services come with strings attached. Sure, home haircuts can carry perks – at salons men shouldn’t flirt with sleek stylists or beefy barbers for that matter! – but when a ‘date night’ is required in return, a man’s finances could easily end up as short as his new do. Thankfully, Remington has come to the rescue of said beleaguered blokes with the Rapid Cut Hair Clipper, designed to help make short work of those knotty mops. With cord/cordless rechargeable functionality, stainless steel blades, and attachments ranging from 1.5-15mm, even the most DIY-challenged chap should be able to make the cut. But this is no ‘fire it up and she’ll be right’ type of power tool, turning out enough new crew-cutted recruits to service the navy – or the Village People, come to

think of it. Instead, due to the Rapid Cut Hair Clipper’s curved blade design, many a fair Barnet can be fashioned and precision ‘manscaping’ (as opposed to man-scalping) undertaken. What’s more, the entire unit is showerproof – it’s called multitasking, guys – and washable for convenient cleaning. So, maybe it’s time to face follicles, men, and realise that while our partners may be helpful for many reasons, they can now be liberated from the tedious chore of taming our wayward manes. The Remington Rapid Cut Hair Clipper (RRP $169.99) is available from electrical retailers and carries 2-5 year manufacturer’s warranties.

SooTHE SENSITIVE SKIN Stress, worry, medication, food intolerances, and environmental influences can all disturb the skin’s healthy balance so for those who describe their skin type as sensitive, it’s important to use skin care creams which restore that natural balance. Weleda’s new Almond Sensitive Skin Body Care range has been specifically designed to calm, soothe and support sensitive, allergy-prone, inflamed and dry skin. Packed with skin-calming natural ingredients – sweet almond oil, shea butter and beeswax – the new range works to hydrate and restore skin’s natural balance with all products pH skin balanced, clinically tested and dermatology-approved. Weleda Almond Sensitive Skin range: body wash (RRP $20.90 200ml), body lotion (RRP $36.90 200ml) and hand cream (RRP $23.90 50ml) available from health food stores and pharmacies.

REVEAL YoUR NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL SKIN Grooming brand Remington has brushed up on skin care, launching the Remington Revitalise Facial Cleansing Brush. This electronic, waterproof cleansing brush goes where hands can’t, its state of the art technology delivering a 10x more effective cleanse than a manual clean. The dualaction rotating and vibrating motion works to thoroughly remove make-up and impurities trapped in pores while the deep cleansing action helps improve the absorption of nourishing skincare ingredients. Catering to different skin types, it includes three interchangeable heads – normal for an everyday deep cleanse, sensitive for gentle daily cleansing and massage to revitalise dull, tired skin – and has three adjustable cleansing speeds. A LED light around the brush head illuminates the face to easily spot impurities. The Remington Revitalise Facial Cleansing Brush (RRP $159.99).

It’s our second birthday and we’re celebrating! This year, thanks to you, our lovely customers, Hair at the Terraces has just got busier and busier. So we added a new senior stylist – Louise – to our team in March. And, now, to cope with the pre-Christmas rush, we’ve also employed Jade as a salon assistant. Last summer it was so hot that we fitted venetian blinds which changed the salon’s look and helped keep out early morning sun. In the winter we were delighted (and humbled) that the Howick Village Business Association judged us as the Best Professional/Service Business in Howick. And when we won the Supreme Award as well, we were truly blown away. Tanya completed her hairdressing qualification in August. And now it’s october and Christmas is nearly here. Which precious metal should you choose for your ring? Here is a quick guide to help you decide.

NOW OPEN TIL 5.30PM WEEKDAYS

• WHITE GOLD: Placing white metal next to white diamonds looks fantastic because it creates a continuous, streamlined look that’s both classic and contemporary. An extremely popular option, white gold is plated with a hard element called rhodium which resists scratches and tarnishing, creating a lovely reflective appearance. However, it does wear away with time so periodic re-plating is recommended. • PLATINUM: Rare, and consequently expensive, this naturally white metal has a cool lustre and is the “hardest” precious metal making it the most resistant to damage of all the precious metals. This means it’s ideal for active lifestyles. It’s also hypoallergenic, which is a nice bonus for those with sensitive skin. • YELLOW GOLD: Yellow gold is a true representation of gold’s natural colour and, although yellow gold may have fallen behind in the popularity stakes over recent times, it’s making a comeback. It is truly a classic precious metal with its inherent treasurable properties being celebrated by the earliest civilisations. Its warm patina comes from the metal’s natural qualities and appearance. • ROSE GOLD: Rose gold is an alloy that is increasingly on-trend thanks to its elegant, romantic look. The gorgeous pink hue is created by altering the yellow gold alloy to

include a little more copper but less silver.

NEW ZEALAND FASHION ONLINE

• STERLING SILVER: Silver is generally used for less expensive jewellery due to its relatively “soft” and less durable qualities making it unsuitable for setting precious stones such as diamonds. However, it has the “whitest” colour of all the precious metals making it perfect for situations where the design necessitates the colour but not the expense of other white precious metals. If you can’t decide on which to choose, then combine two or even three metals. A mix of different colours will give your ring a modern feel that’s right on trend. On the other hand there’s nothing more traditional than having diamonds set in white gold or platinum combined with a yellow gold band.

Never…Never… Never… Ever, Ever Give Up CLIVE PLUCKNETT, Naturopath, P.G.Dip. Anti Aging Medicine, P.G.Dip. Cancer Nutrition, P.G.Dip. Mental Health Nutrition, MBA, BA, P.G.Dip Science

The story goes that Winston Churchill went back to his old school to give an address. By way of introduction the headmaster said, “listen carefully lads, you are about to hear from one of the greatest men of our time.”

This is the secret of outrageous success, happiness, and health.

Then you try this practitioner and that. Eventually, you accept that there is no cure and that you are stuck with your condition. You give up. But, if you listen carefully you will hear an almighty moan from your body because it hasn’t given up. It will fight to the death to serve you. The body is a self-healing mechanism. It is truly amazing. Nothing else can do this. The only thing stopping it doing this is you giving up too soon. Pick any condition. I pick migraines, because it is where two bodies just had victories. I get many migrainers. There are many causes of migraines. You start with the most obvious causes. The bulk of the cases are resolved here. Some are more difficult and you have to keep working through the tests and possibilities. With three recent cases, it took a lot longer than usual. With one it

turned out to be a genetic defect, with an inability to convert a particular vitamin into a useable form and when we gave the body the activated form….whammo – paydirt – 18 years of migraines gone. With another, I suspected a lithium deficiency. “Nah Clive, been there already and it did nothing.” “What sort of lithium was used?” “I have no idea.” “Well try this form. You have come this far, what is there to lose?” Whammo – paydirt – 10 years of migraines gone. The third gave up on me. That is absolutely fine, as long as he did not give up altogether. I pray he kept going and achieved his goal. This is not about migraines. It is about not giving up. It is about realising your destiny, your potential. Your practitioners may give up. You may give up. Your body will never give up. At bewell, we respect what your body is capable of doing and we help it to get there.

in your stride It’s time for couch potatoes to slip off the settee and step out on a new regime to improve health and fitness. And, thankfully, there is something to suit even the most unmotivated. Dancing, swimming, running, cycling, walking are just some ways to keep bodies in motion. Also consider rock climbing, tramping or tai chi or take up a sport – golf, touch rugby and kayaking can work wonders for the long-time slothful.

Churchill approached the podium. There was a hushed silence. Eventually he broke it, “Never….. never…..never, ever, ever give up”. Then he sat down.

Giving up is easy. You go to the doctor, you do the tests, the results help little. You take the drugs. You go to another doctor, more drugs. You go to another doctor, but this time it is not about your body, it is about your mind, so different drugs to help your “depression”.

Take exercise

The choices are many but, as with anything, gaining fitness and losing weight (if needed) takes time. It’s important to start out right and continue in a safe way. For some, walking is the simplest way to begin. It’s not only one of the easiest ways to become more active it’s FREE! Often underrated as a form of exercise, nevertheless it is ideal for people of most ages and fitness levels. But when starting out it pays to pace oneself. First of all, a pair of shoes is all the equipment really needed. Any shoes or trainers that are comfortable, provide adequate support and don’t cause blisters will do to start with but talk to a footwear professional for advice. Wear loose-fitting clothing that allows freedom of movement and even if walking to work, wearing your usual work clothes with a comfy pair of shoes, should be fine. For long walks, take a small backpack with water, a healthy snack, sunscreen, a sunhat and perhaps a change of top too. Add in a light, waterproof jacket if the weather looks iffy.

and 4000 steps a day anyway, so reaching 10,000 isn’t too difficult. If, you can walk fast for only a couple of minutes to start with, that’s fine. Don’t overdo it on the first day; you can build up distance and speed. Begin every walk slowly and gradually increase your pace. After a few minutes, try walking a little faster. Towards the end of your walk, gradually slow down your pace to cool down. Finish with a few gentle stretches, to help improve flexibility. From walking to the shops or work, to walking the dog and joining an organised group walk, try to make every step count. Importantly, make walking a habit, part of your daily routine. Use stairs instead of elevators, walk the children to school, leave the car behind on short trips and arrange an early morning or after work walk with a friend. Add variety to your walks. Most places offer interesting walks, including parks, walking trails, nature reserves, Rotary’s Tamaki Estuary walk and more. If you need encouragement, join a walking a group. It’s a great way to make new friends and find constant motivation.

Start slowly and build your walking regime gradually. To gain any health benefits, walking needs to be faster than a stroll – fast enough to raise your heart rate and break a sweat.

Finally, set a goal such as walking 1000 steps in around 10 minutes then start adding extra steps. Pedometers are a fun way to work out your average daily steps and before long you will find you are walking faster and further. Your breathing will improve and for those who have gained weight over winter, the extra kilos should begin to disappear.

Try to walk 10,000 steps a day. Most of us walk between 3000

Perhaps, then, you’ll think about a more advanced form of exercise! eastlife | november 2015 |

Dine with us – lunch and dinner!

Weekend dining in Howick has been given a fresh burst of flavour with local favourite Xacuti now opening for lunch on Saturdays and Sundays. This avant garde restaurant, which has done much to spice up local dining with its clever fusion of Goan and Portuguese cuisine, has just celebrated its first birthday and can be proud of winning favour with patrons and leading food critics. Co-owner and head chef, Rasika says with the warmer weather, it was time to review the dinner menu and to also offer weekend lunches when people are out and about. Subsequently, a value plus, twocourse lunch is now on the table priced at just $45 for two people.

With Xacuti – pronounced sha-cutee – now visited by many regulars, Rasika says the lunch menu will include innovative flavour twists which she hopes will not only attract new diners but also galvanise the tastebuds of those regulars all over again. For example:

tamarind puree, chick pea noodles

From Little Small –

• Saffron and French vanilla cream brulee, pistachio biscotti, stone fruit coulis

• Potato sourdough , Bombay-style green chutney, olive oil, black garlic amul butter • Bisi bele bhat Goan sausage aranchinis, smoked cheddar, tomato chutney • Polenta Upma cakes, tempered curd dip, curry leaves dust From Sharing is Caring –

Patrons can mix and match, choosing from smaller ‘tantaliser’ size options, ‘Sharing is Caring’ plates and ‘Sweet As’ desserts. “At this stage lunch is available only at weekends but with the Christmas countdown started we will take weekday booking for corporate and social club events of 10 or more.”

• Spicy rabbit momos, capsicum relish, ponzu sauce • Scallops balchao, candied pork belly, pickled pearls, parsnip, powdered chilli oil • Spiced chick pea tart – potato patty stuffed with dried whole milk,

From Sweet As – • Falooda trifle – coconut sponge, rose arroz doce, Turkish delight, fig ice cream, whipped orange blossom auglase, saffron jelly, and basil seeds

But dinner patrons won’t miss out. Many of these dishes will also be available in the evening together with Big Plates (mains) of which new additions include: • Smoked salt marinated chicken recheado with buffarella and olive tapenade, chutney potatoes, makhani sauce, dill oil and lotus root • Prosciutto-wrapped Konkani masala venison, nutmeg spiced mushroom dauphinoise, bay veg thoran with wild berry jus • Beef scotch fillet ularthiyathu , horseradish colcannon, asparagus foogath, spiced eggplant caviar and spiced onion ring

www.xacuti.co.nz

Accompanying the revised menu moves, Xacuti will also feature weekly specials on the dinner menu – a main dish and either a dessert or an entree. “Mayank [Rasika’s husband and business partner] and I are really excited about going forward into our second year,” Rasika says. “We have an experienced and dedicated team on board including myself, Mayank and Maitre d’, Luv Sharma, who worked at Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant, Bread Street for two years.” “We usually change the dinner menu every six months but with everyone so excited about enjoying summer evening dining and socialising, I wanted to offer regulars something a little different when they fancied a change, hence the specials board.” And the improvements don’t stop there. A revamped wine list includes a classic mix of reputable New Zealand, Australian and European wines and although BYO wine is still part of the restaurant’s service it won’t be available when Grabone or similar vouchers are presented.

Food bites Rice is nice but some things just have so much more flavour and visual temptation as demonstrated by the findings of these foodie meanderings locally and further afield.

Cheeky beef a winner:

Fish of the Month

red gurnard

Funny how meat cuts go in and out of fashion just like garment styles. Back in the popularity ‘steaks’ beef cheeks are being served on plates all over the country including at Waipuna International Hotel and Conference Centre where executive chef, Ajay Zalte’s interpretation is a hearty and absolutely melt-in-your-mouth dish that is difficult to fault. In fact, when EastLife editor, Helen Perry and her husband dined on this dish at Waipuna recently, the servings were so generous they took home doggy bags containing more than enough for dinner for three the following night... and that’s no bull!

Famous words translated:

From Oceanz Seafood, The Hub, Botany Get your hooks into this – red gurnard fillets have a sweet and tasty flavour that is popular with children.

version, too) rich chocolate torte, orange and almond cake, luscious, meringue-topped Louise cakes made the old fashioned way and many other sweet enticements are on display. Sit down to Devonshire tea, bite into a toothsome goodies and indulge in a little nostalgia for bygone days.

Food of the gods:

Marie Antionette’s famous words, “let them eat cake” take on new meaning at a delightful Howick teahouse named (we guess) for the 18th Century French queen. Step inside Antoinette’s and be charmed by hanging lights fashioned from china cups and saucers before being tempted by an array of cakes that are easy to lose your head over.

Rotorua’s Eat Streat has captured the patronage of locals and visitors alike offering great dining and socialising options. After a $2million dollar upgrade to create a pedestrian mall with covered walkway and retractable roof, this corner of town, packed with restaurants and bars, offers lots to get hot about.

customers. Travellers planning to stay in the tourist Mecca should check out the three-course $28 meal option – superb value and quite the taste sensation. For example a starter could be a thick pumpkin, yoghurt and cumin soup or perhaps bread and dips (enough for two!).

Gurnard is a member of the scorpion fish family. The English name is derived from the French word Grondin, which relates to the croaking noise they can produce.

Mains offer several options but the porterhouse steak topped with a skewer of two fat, grilled prawns and a bacon-wrapped scallop comes with yummy veg accompaniments. And, there’s no ending this meal before dessert.

Gurnard are shallow water, bottomdwelling fish, found around NZ on sandy sea floors at depths of up to 180 metres. They feed on crabs, shrimps and worms, often ‘walking’ over the ground on their long pectoral rays, which they also use to sense prey. They are relatively shortlived and quite productive meaning good stock levels are being maintained.

Yes, ambrosia – sweet, whipped, fruity and piled into a cracking toffee basket – so, so good and an ideal way to finish. Indeed, it’s easy to be passionate about Ambrosia!

Smooth moves for summer It’s time to go nuts over summer! And, at EastLife we’ve been craving some of Lisa Craven’s tantalising smoothie recipes from her new book, Juice It! Blend It!. Try these.

Double Almond Smoothie INGREDIENTS: • 1 banana, fresh or (preferably) frozen • 1 cup almond milk (see recipe) • 1 tbsp cacao nibs • 1 tbsp ABC (almond, brazil nut & cashew) butter • 1 tsp coconut nectar •P inch of cinnamon

METHOD: Peel the banana and cut in half. Add all the ingredients to the blender. Blend and enjoy!

Almond Milk INGREDIENTS: • Pinch of sea salt • 1 cup almonds • 4 cups filtered water, plus extra for soaking nut milk bag

Ronald’s believe it... or not! Can we really trust the word of a clown? It appears not following a recent visit to McDonalds. Keen to bust my hunger, I counted up the shrapnel after checking the restaurant chain’s website to confirm the price of the Georgie Pie Hunger Buster.

However, when placing my order, I was told the price had increased to $12.50. Luckily (as otherwise I would have needed to return home sans burger for want of a 50 cent piece) the manager honoured Ronald’s promises.

It stated: ‘Pinch yourself, this is really happening. [Georgie Pie Hunger Buster] provides a warm welcome at just $12. Believe it.’

Of course, prices go up, but shouldn’t advertising be current, even online? Harvey Norman might beg to differ!

52 | eastlife | november 2015

So I posed this question to Ronald’s people. A spokesperson replied: “It’s a simple case of this page not having been updated... if there is a discrepancy in the advertised price, the policy is that the customer should be charged the lower amount. “Due to human error, the price was not updated when the change occurred in mid-September.”

We’re all entitled to make mistakes – with many responsibilities to juggle, Mr McDonald is bound to drop the ball once in a while – but advertising an incorrect price (effectively overcharging customers for approximately a month at least) is no laughing matter. The price online has now been updated, so I do ‘believe it’... now. – Jon Rawlinson www.eastlife.co.nz

Ajay Zalte – executive chef, Waipuna International Hotel and Conference Centre. Ajay is a Pakuranga resident and has worked in leading hotels and first class restaurants worldwide.

INGREDIENTS • 250g brown sugar • 125g unsalted butter, chopped • 8-12 tinned apricots, halved • 2 eggs • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 125g plain flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 1/3 c pouring cream • Crème fraiche or fresh cream to serve

METHOD: Combine 150g brown sugar with 60g butter in a heavy-based saucepan and stir over low heat until combined and smooth. Remove from heat and pour into a well-greased, round, 23cm cake tin, spreading evenly. Place apricots halves on top, cut-side down

Using an electric mixer, beat remaining butter with remaining sugar in a bowl until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each, then stir in vanilla. Combine sifted flour and baking powder into a bowl with a pinch of salt. Fold dry ingredients into butter mixture, add cream and mix well. Spoon mixture over apricots and bake at 175C for 40 minutes, or until cooked when tested with a skewer. Stand in tin for 5 minutes before turning out on a plate Serve with crème fraiche Serves eight Chef’s note: Cake will keep in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Moondarra and me Let those blessed cheesemakers take their time; thanks to Moondarra, we don’t need to! Blended with honey and rolled in ground pistachio nuts, this cream cheese brought a smile to the lips of one EastLife writer in particular. While this delightful dairy darling is often paired with dried fruit or served atop crackers, crostini or bagels, it can also be employed in this dippy little recipe for:

Honey & pistachio lamb dip INGREDIENTS:

METHOD:

• 360g Moondarra Honey & Pistachio cream cheese, softened • 250g lamb mince • 1/2 tsp ground cumin • 1/2 tsp ground coriander seeds • 1 clove garlic, finely chopped • 1 purple onion, finely sliced • 2 tbsp parsley, finely chopped • 1/3 cup pistachio nuts, roughly chopped • 1/4 cup Greek yoghurt • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice • 1 tbsp honey • Wholemeal flatbread, torn

Heat oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add mince, garlic, onion and dried spices.

www.eastlife.co.nz

Cook for a few minutes until meat is browned, onions are softened and spices are fragrant. Remove from heat. Whisk cheese in a bowl before transferring to a serving bowl. Top with warm lamb mince, drizzle of honey, yoghurt, pistachio, lemon wedges and flat bread.

Moondarra Honey & Pistachio Cream Cheese is available (RRP $5.39) from supermarkets nationwide. eastlife | november 2015 |

MY Favourite Thing

Christmas at Highwic

Shoe collector’s bespoke armoire

With the gardens of historic Epsom home, Highwic, bursting with spring flowers, visitors can look forward to a floral extravaganza next month featuring all the colourful fun of the festive season.

This month EastLife takes a look at Whitford shoe designer CUSHLA REED’S prodigious shoe wardrobe housing her extensive and colourful collection. She tells us why the handmade affair is at the top of her list of most prized possessions.

The first Highwic Christmas Garden Festival takes place, Saturday and Sunday, November 21 & 22, building on Highwic’s former Sweet Pea Festival. Highwic manager, Cheryl Laurie says the new festival will be bigger, with a range of spectacular flowers including chocolate cosmos and six varieties of dianthus in the Heaven Scent range developed by renowned horticulturist Dr Keith Hammett.

As the owner of Minx Shoes, a shoe wardrobe is an obvious choice. But it’s much more than just a piece of furniture – I had a hand in designing it and it’s a personal investment. Actually, it was my husband who started the ball rolling. I’d just had my second daughter, Abbey, and to celebrate my 40th, he wanted to do something special. He commissioned a family friend and fellow local, Sam James, who specialises in fine furniture.

“We’ll also have a show garden of sweet peas and Christmas-themed flower beds in festive red and white. The overall experience will be stunning,” Ms Laurie says. Dr Hammett will lead garden tours at 11am and 2pm on both days, and will have high quality sweet pea seed available for purchase.

I hit it off with Sam and we’re still great friends. I love working with young talents who have the craft and skill to create something I would be happy with. And coming from a handmade shoe background I didn’t want my new addition to be mass produced.

Inside Highwic, the living garden festival theme will continue with an exhibition of avant garde pieces created by designers from Auckland Floral Art. Entertainment will include harpists, carols, hand bellringers, as well as two pipers and drummers from the Auckland Grammar School Pipe Band.

I knew how I wanted it to function and I also wanted to use natural timbers with the timber grain on show. We used an unusual, naturally dark, African hardwood called wenge [from the Millettia Laurentii], as a feature on the shelving and throughout the wardrobe. It contrasts with the main timber, American white ash.

And for people wanting to tackle early Christmas shopping, the Highwic Christmas shop, is open daily up to Christmas Eve. Admission: $10 pp including Heritage New Zealand members; children free. Visit highwic.co.nz

There are closed cupboards – for hiding practical footwear! – on either

At the beginning everything was neatly stacked but as you may have guessed, I’m running out of space! I’ve lost count of the number of shoes in there, but it’s definitely in the hundreds.

It took about eight weeks for the wardrobe to be finished and I was amazed at how heavy it was, although it is all solid timber.

My husband has been dropping some hints to sacrifice a few pairs but the wardrobe will always be a part of our lives – it’s now a family heirloom.

Chives – if a herb grows in the garden, does it make meal?

It’s been said that life is like an onion, you peel it away one layer at a time. However, who really wants to peel away one layer after another only to find there’s nothing in the middle? With that cheery thought out of the way, we’ll leave the philosophising aside and get down to the gardening. In fact, we look instead at the modest chive and discover that what this herb lacks in complexity, it more than makes up for in substance!

What are chives anyway? From the onion family, chives (Allium schoenoprasum) actually gain their name from the French for onion, cive. Common (or onion) chives are most often grown however, garlic chives – the leaves of which carry a sweet garlic flavour – are also quite prevalent. Aside from their flavours, the most obvious difference between the two is that common chives grow

to roughly 30cm in height and feature purple flowers, whereas garlic chives grow a little taller, have broader leaves and white blooms. Although they are perennials, chives will die down in winter in all but the warmest areas. Chives should not be confused with society garlic (Tulbaghia violacea). Although society garlic looks similar, its leaves are edible and it also tastes similar to sweet garlic, it is a different plant; a case of same, same, different!

When, where and how to plant In the northern North Island, chives can be planted year-round. However, those in cooler climes should take a break from planting during winter. or consider growing indoors. When growing from seed, find a section of the garden which receives full sun. Alternatively, consider planting in pots or containers to locate in a sunny area.

Seeds should be sown into freedraining soil at a depth roughly three times their diameter, with plants spaced approximately 5cm apart. Ideally, soil temperature should be between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius to ensure germination. Alternatively, if time is a factor, consider purchasing the plants themselves. Both plants and seeds are readily available from garden centres and online.

Care Although chives enjoy full sun, they do not like dry soil, so be sure to water regularly, particularly during the hotter months. While their flowers are attractive, they can inhibit the growth of leaves. Flowers should, therefore, be pruned when they appear.

Pests and diseases Chives aren’t badly affected by pests or diseases. In fact, they are actually quite handy when grown as companions to everything from

cucumbers to roses and even fruit trees. That’s because their oniongarlic properties tend to deter a number of pests and even help control some fungal diseases. Thrips, mites and slugs can cause chives a few problems, but these are easily treated with various products, which are widely available, as well organic solutions.

Harvest Chives should be ready to harvest from one and a half to two and a half months after sowing.

Uses and nutrition Thanks to their mild onion (or garlic) flavour, chives can be used in a wide range of dishes from savoury muffins to stir fries and pastas but are most commonly used in stuffings, salads or as garnish. The flowers are also edible and offer a sweeter flavour. Rich in iron, chives are said to help lower blood pressure. In addition, some claim they can stimulate appetite and aid digestion.

GOING TO POT? If your garden has gone to pot, this month is the time to re-pot flagging plants. Fresh potting mix can work wonders for tired plants, freeing their roots and, with a healthy dose of fertiliser such as Nutricote, or Phostrogen, giving them a healthy dose of nutrients. Make sure your container plants aren’t hanging out for water either; add Saturaid to potted plants which will help them make the most of water through the summer. Hanging baskets, in particular, should be ready for replanting. www.eastlife.co.nz

Accounting for good taste While wedded bliss frequently originates at Beachlands’ Brookwood Lodge, garden ramblers will soon behold more beauty than that presented by blushing brides alone, as JON RAWLINSON discovered. For more than a century, Brookwood’s beautiful villa has watched time and tides roll by – albeit from a distance. But, during the upcoming Pohutukawa Coast Garden Ramble, cottage gardens on the four-acre property will take centre stage.

Originally from South Africa, Heather and Brian moved to Greenlane in 1982, settling in Beachlands later that same year. Reluctant to leave their 100 year old villa behind, they re-sited their house soon afterwards.

Owners, Heather (head teacher at Pakuranga Kindergarten) and Brian (an accountant), Brooke look forward to welcoming ramblers.

With help from a dedicated local builder, contractors, and a healthy dose of elbow grease, the couple developed home and gardens, opening Brookwood Lodge as a B&B and wedding venue eight years ago. Their sons (Grant, Stuart and Michael) have also lent a hand over the years.

“We love our property and living in Beachlands, although the council rates are eye-watering!” Heather laughs. “I think ramblers will enjoy our flower gardens and the roses, in particular; we have a wide variety which gives us a good show each year. I think roses are the highlight of a visit here, especially when they’re in bloom during November.” The gardens also feature cherry trees – likely to have finished flowering by the time the ramble rolls around – expansive lawns, a veggie garden, mini pine forest and plenty of fruit trees, berries, and nuts. Although the couple has hosted more than their fare share of animals (aside from the party variety common during post nuptial celebrations), these days the wedding hosts are more sheepish when it comes to this particular variety of husbandry. “Over the years we’ve had various animals, mainly to mow the grass, and they were fun for the kids to be

“We both enjoy the garden and most work is done on weekends. It is much easier now to find the time for gardening as all our sons having left home and there are fewer demands on our time,” Heather says.

Ready to Ramble? This year’s Pohutukawa Coast Garden Ramble (November 21, 10am-4pm) visits a delightful dozen properties (including Brookwood Lodge) throughout Maraetai/ Beachlands. Proceeds from the event will be used to support a worthy cause – the Thoo Mweh Khee School on the Thai/ Burma border – so there’s plenty of reason to ramble on again! around too,” Heather explains. “We inherited chickens when we moved in and have since had ponies, cows,

goats, sheep, ducks and geese. Currently, we have three sheep; we find them easiest to manage.”

This year is the Brookwood’s first involvement in the Pohutukawa Coast Garden Ramble. When approached by organisers, Heather was delighted to take part. “After Pauline [Gardner – event organiser] detailed how charity would benefit from the funds raised, we said ‘yes’ straight away to helping out! “While we’ve since been kept very busy with many hours of tidying and weeding, it’s all in the name of an excellent cause, so we’re delighted to be involved.” www.eastlife.co.nz

Oil or stain for cedar homes?

TimberTECH director MARK RALPH provides welcome advice on how to keep exterior cedar looking its best at all times

URBANO INTERIORS

Spring is sprung, the birds have sung, and … oh, enough with the rhyme! Here’s the thing – the days are getting longer and warmer and those who own a cedar home may well be thinking now’s the time to spruce it up a bit. Smart thinking; in which case, you might also be asking yourself: should I have it oiled or stained?

Cedar loves oil!

www.urbanointeriors.co.nz

Here’s the answer. All else being equal, oil is the way to go, no contest. You see, while stain only coats the surface of the wood, oil gets right in below the surface. Once there, it works in partnership with one of cedar’s basic features. Cedar is naturally oil-rich, and when it’s alive and growing as a tree, its oil provides great protection against the weather, insects and mould.

French Style Furniture direct from the importer

Once we harvest cedar, mill it and place it on a house, it no longer produces its own protective oil. Over time, the wind, the rain and – especially the sun – rob it of oil, leaving it dry and unprotected from mould and other damage. When good quality oil is applied, cedar sucks it deep into its cells where it can repel everything that nature throws at it. Given such a great benefit, why would you stain your cedar? There’s only one good reason, really, and that’s if it’s already stained. In that case, the cost to remove the stain before oiling will be prohibitively high and most people are better off to just reapply stain regularly.

New showroom now open

Cedar is a naturally oilrich timber. Applying a good quality oil regularly can help it maintain its natural protection against wind, rain and sun damage.”

We’re here to help! The difference between oil and stain shows up when preparing cedar for restoration. Sanding stain may reveal previously hidden insect, sun or moisture damage. With an oil recoat on a well maintained property, it’s just a quick, gentle clean with a bio-degradable wash, a short drying period and then the re-oiling itself. Simple and effective. To make our oil treatment even more successful we use Wood-X, which we developed with paint company Resene to suit New Zealand conditions. Christmas off to a cracking start The young at heart with a love of all things festive will be overjoyed to see the Christmas in Karaka Ramble is back on the calendar this year.

Sara Chitty and family

After a three year absence, this popular event, showcasing some of Karaka’s most exclusive homes decked with boughs of holly and a whole lot more, is again set to attract visitors on Saturday, November 21. A dozen homes will be dressed in a variety of seasonal themes to help raise funds for Te Hihi School and among them are two with a shared common heritage. One is the double storied, arts and crafts home of Bru and Linda Goldfinch, moved seven years ago from its original Kidd Rd site to Dyke Rd in Karaka where it has undergone extensive renovations. Built around 1933 by a local farmer Mr Carpenter, it then passed into the ownership of the Winstone family and had two more owners before being purchased by the Goldfinch family. Linda fell in love with the house on visiting it as a child, and despite its reputation for being protected by a benevolent spirit, there is nothing ghostly about the transformation. Furnished with antiques and decorated in period wall colours, the house will be prepared for the ramble by Linda herself, with traditional decorations (lots of pine, no tinsel) and in keeping with the property. Three Christmas trees in different colours and vintage toys including a rocking horse, promise to invoke memories of Christmas’ past. Another home, a contemporary Stonewood house, which will also feature in the ramble, now occupies the Kidd Rd site. It is the home of Mark and Sara Chitty, built after their family-owned Haunui Stud was relocated to Karaka from Clevedon five years ago. The move proved fortuitous – not only have the Chitty’s gained a beautiful new home with two separate wings and a magnificent vaulted living room, but Mark swears that it’s a lot easier “to grow horses in Karaka!” Now the family is looking forward to having the house decorated for Christmas in Karaka. www.eastlife.co.nz

With children in mind, the decorations are being undertaken by Party by Design, the theme incorporating wonderful Dr Seuss decorations in the main living area while the children’s playroom will have its own Christmas tree and feature a large Lego display. Haunui Farm is also hosting the event’s Christmas Marketplace where some 30 stall holders will offer a variety of gift ideas and artisans can be seen at work. Visitors who have pre-ordered lunches form St Margaret’s Cafe will be able to enjoy them in the comfort of the farm’s guest house. There will be food trucks and a coffee cart on site too. Musical entertainment will be courtesy of students from Te Hihi School. Devonshire teas will also be available at other ramble venues. Homes on the tour will be individually styled by 10 designers plus two talented home owners. Their brief is to keep the integrity of each home while highlighting its best feature. Visitors can expect to see some novel

themes and outstanding decorative touches in the ramble which is considered one of the district’s most outstanding and popular events.

JANe WilSHeR, from elite Property Management, talks about ensuring rentals provide market returns. Here at elite Property Management we have recently been appointed to look after a property in the Sunnyhills area. it’s a lovely, four-bedroom family home with a modern kitchen, two bathrooms and generous living areas. The property is in really good condition throughout and sits in a lovely position with views to the water from several rooms. For a lot of people, this would make a lovely place to live and is a place people would be proud to call home. A rental property since new, the owner recently decided to cash up as he didn’t feel he was getting a good return on his investment. This is where the story gets interesting because the investor was a private landlord who clearly didn’t know the market rent for the property he owned. The old tenants, who left the property just before the sales marketing began, were paying a weekly rent of $530.

several really good applications for the house and the really difficult thing was deciding who the successful applicants would be. More ups than downs Bright Line Tax start of 1 October.

Total Focus Principal, Greg Roy areinz, gives an update on the local real estate market happenings.

The media is full of reports that Auckland’s property boom has come to an end and auction clearance rates are down but surprisingly September sales numbers, and the overall median price, just aren’t tallying with this – in wider Auckland, anyway. Figures just released from REINZ for the month of September show Auckland, overall, had 3158 sales and achieved a new record high median price of $771,000. Looking at the number of sales, this is an increase of 38% from September 2014 and up 5% on August’s 3002 sales. On the median price this represents an increase of 25.4% from September 2014’s $615,000, and a $31,000 (+4.2%) rise compared to August 2015. Our area of Eastern beaches,

Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank has loosened the LVR rules for properties outside of Auckland.

however, was a bit more in agreement with the press reports. Whilst the 211 sales for September was up slightly from August’s 184, our median dipped slightly (down -1.3%) from August’s record high of $977,500 to $965,000. This still represents a median price increase of 18.7% from September last year. The number of days to sell remained at 34 days. Current stock levels are again up from prior months with there being 370 properties from the area currently showing for sale on realestate.co.nz – in the same week last month it was 349 and two months prior to that, 236, so more choice is definitely now available. The results for September may well be a reflection of people getting in and completing sales prior to the new

Banks were allowed to allocate only 10% of their new lending to customers with less than 20% deposit; that’s now been moved to 15%. This will allow more first home buyers to get into the market plus give Auckland investors new opportunities in the provinces. Tight competition in Auckland has already been driving investors to look outside of the city and this is evidenced with the Waikato/Bay of Plenty for example, having seen its highest median price rise over a three-month period since the late 1980s hit a new record median price of $390,000. As we approach Christmas how Auckland’s market will round out in that last quarter is, I am sure, something that a lot of people will be eager to see.

Give me the hire life

Easy to pay says McClay Doing business with the dreaded IRD is, apparently, easy as ABC these days, according to Todd McClay, and set to get even better.

While CEOs of market leading organisations value the importance of effective branding, this focus doesn’t always filter down to the rank and file they employ.

Identifying the recently-released business reference group survey, the Revenue Minister says doing business with Inland Revenue is exactly 23% easier than last year.

In an increasingly competitive market (whether selling cola products, car parts or oneself), it literally pays to stand out from the crowd. Former east Auckland local, and author of You’re Hired, Tom O’Neil, says when it comes to branding, a personal approach is crucial.

“Inland Revenue’s stated aim is to save taxpayers time and money and it is working. Innovations [already in place] help make paying tax simpler. As proof of that, the number of outstanding tax returns last year was down 21.5% on the previous year.”

“So many people massively undersell and let themselves down in job hunting. We are now ‘brands’, whether we understand this or not. Therefore, we need to learn how to manage our brands,” he says.

After spending his formative years in the Howick/Pakuranga area, Tom has practiced what he preaches; the personal development specialist, recruitment and human resources consultant, author and motivational speaker has gainfully employed his own advice. Today, Tom runs a CV development and career consultancy. His latest book shows how personal branding and use of social networking have become essential to success.

The survey assesses ‘levels of effort’ in dealing with government departments. McClay credits a range of factors, including an uptake of voice recognition services, with sparking this easier interaction. “Businesses cite online GST filing and the ease of contacting the IRD as two of the major reasons for paying their tax getting easier [and] more people are doing a lot more online. In the past year, 67% of returns and almost 83% of payments were done online.” He adds that National’s Business Transformation programme is also bearing fruit. “As we move closer to the completion of Business Transformation, which achieved all of its milestones this year and is still under budget, customers will see continuing improvements to the way they interact with the revenue system. Business Transformation will change how people will interact with the IRD.”

Right ‘Hon’ Key Being well ‘red’ is important in a better understanding of our world; closer links to our Asian neighbours appears essential to John Key. This month, once again we report on some of the recent activities of the PM, as seen through the eyes of the EastLife team.

Nice ‘Yuan’ John! The PM was (yet again) seeing red (China) recently, announcing support for a new air service between Christchurch and China as part of the Tourism Growth Partnership. Confirming the Government will invest a further $1.5 million (in addition to $270,000 approved late last year) over three years, the Minister of Tourism will be hoping more travellers will come fly with... Key! “Government investment will help ensure ongoing sustainability of the service and help deliver economic benefits to Canterbury, the South Island and the rest of New Zealand,” Mr Key said. “This new service is great news for the people of Canterbury, who have worked hard to rebuild their economy and are now beginning to see the benefits of their hard work.” In addition to being high flyers, it seems Chinese visitors have also been big spenders, with annual arrivals (up 23 percent in the past year) spending more than $1 billion. And, overall, Mr Key said the tourism sector is in “great shape”, with numbers up 28 percent over 12 months and spending reaching $8.7 billion. To help part visitors with their cash, Mr Key has announced further funding through the Tourism Growth Partnership. The Government has now invested $10.5 million in 20 projects, including tours and even an app to help visitors manage their itineraries. “We want to attract more visitors to New Zealand and we can do this by identifying and responding to new market opportunities and looking at what additional products and services we can provide,” said

76 | eastlife | november 2015

the PM. “I am really excited about the range of projects we are helping fund.”

National’s ‘annus sortof-all-right-ish’ Although the opposition may contend the first year of this Government’s third term may not have been an annus glorious, the PM appeared very confident about his party’s achievements. Identifying ‘Key’ points, including the economy, the Christchurch rebuild (yes, that’s still going on!) and family matters, John said his party is delivering on its commitment to help all New Zealanders. “Our careful management of the books has meant we’ve been able

to introduce new policies to support New Zealand families... helping young New Zealanders into their first home through our HomeStart programme, and by working with local councils to free up more land faster through Housing Accords.”

to focus attention on the most pressing issues and find ways to resolve them.

He cited education and health as particular areas of achievement.

Key milks TPP deal

“We are continuing to invest heavily in health and education... delivering more elective operations and spending more on hospice and palliative care. We have extended free doctor’s visits and prescriptions to children aged under 13, extended paid parental leave, reduced ACC levies and we’re increasing benefit payments,” Mr Key said. And economic growth could prove the best medicine for families. “Families are also being helped by an economy which is continuing to grow... Like all New Zealanders, we have a shared interest in building a strong economy that provides opportunities for Kiwi families and businesses to get ahead here in their own country.”

Key speech noted Although the news has already been spread, at EastLife we simply had to comment on Key’s calls in New York, New York last month. Pointing to insecurities in the UN’s Security Council, the PM told the General Assembly: “More than 160 leaders have shown up in New York this week to mark the enduring importance of the United Nations over the past 70 years, yet we do so against the backdrop of the worst refugee crisis since World War II. “It’s time for the Council to do its duty to those who have lost their lives, their loved ones, and for the millions who have been displaced.” He said real action was too often blocked by internal divisions and encouraged the Security Council to improve efforts

“We cannot afford to let the Council go from an institution with failings to a failed institution.”

Dairy me and goodness, gracious, (Tim) Groser, what an effort there’s been to finalise a Pacific trade deal in Atlanta! While the TPP (Transpacific Partnership) trade agreement isn’t all that John Key and co (let alone other parties) hoped for, at least now it’s signed. Generally speaking, dairy tariffs largely remain in place, while others have been eliminated. “We’re disappointed there wasn’t agreement to eliminate all dairy tariffs but overall it’s a very good deal for New Zealand,” said the PM shortly after the deal was done last month. “We’ve seen with China how a free trade agreement can boost exports and deepen trade and investment links.” Fears that Kiwis might have to pay more for a taste of medicine will not be realised, according to John. “Many concerns raised previously about TPP are not reflected in the final agreement. For example, consumers will not pay more for subsidised medicines as a result of TPP and the PHARMAC model will not change,” he said. Still, the Greens are not keen and ‘Shaw’ TPP will fail. “Whichever way you look at the TPPA, it’s a bad deal. After five years of talking, Tim Groser and the National Government have failed to achieve an agreement that is in New Zealand’s best interests,” co-leader, James Shaw said. “TPPA is a bad deal because the costs will be worn by everyday New Zealanders while the benefits will go to private companies.” Key estimates TPP will benefit the New Zealand economy to the tune of $2.7 billion a year by 2030. Part 1 Many in the newer generations tend to say, ‘Me and society’. We know messages like... ‘Looking after #1’, ‘What’s in it for me? (WIIFM)’ and ‘I love me, myself, and I’. However, these expressions are not all negative. You are often the best qualified to look after #1. It is fair to ask what is in it for you, if you are going to participate in

something. You are allowed to state that you... are quite a ‘hot’ human bean. If you don’t do a little selfpromotion, very few folk will step up on your behalf, and praise you like crazy. Probably because they are somewhat busy, promoting their selves. Unless you belong to Hermits Inc., it is very tricky to get the best out of society, while engrossed in the worship of your immodest self. A ‘good society’, is a launching pad for you, to achieve... ‘best life’.

By the Code Most small to medium companies can ignore the New Zealand Securities Exchange (NZX) and its Takeovers Code (TC) run by the Takeovers Panel (TP) because they don’t have many shareholders and their shares aren’t listed for public trading. However, there is a potential trap for New Zealand registered companies with 50 or more shareholders, such as where

they are umbrellas for individual businesses or professions (medical services being an example). In those cases, they could become code companies by accident and subject to the restrictions on share dealing contained in the TC (which is designed for NZX listed companies). The advent of crowd-funding through share investments in start-up

Simply defined, a ‘good society’ might be this : ‘a structured system of community, sharing customs, laws, organisation, values, continuity, security, identity and opportunity, for those who live within it.’ These elements will fail, if people are too self-absorbed to share and help.

Wynyard Wood consultant, RICHARD OSBORNE, whose specialties include commercial law and intellectual property law, writes on issues concerning the business community companies, where the public offer restrictions of the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013 (FMC) are relaxed for on-line type investment in small amounts, increases the risk that unlisted companies could become code companies. The TP has just released the Takeovers Code (Small Code Companies) Exemption Notice 2015. It applies to non-listed code

companies which have total assets of $20m or less. Upon appropriate disclosure and approval (effectively 95%) they can opt out of the Code rules in relation to share issues but not other forms of control transactions (share buybacks being an example). Overall, this is a complicated area that can catch out the unwary.

New RX features Lexus-first blacked out rear pillars, which provide a dramatic ‘floating-roof’ effect. This is an overseas-spec F Sport model.

Lexus lap of luxury A bold new look, improved safety systems and more advanced technology are the key features of the fourth generation RX mid-size, luxury Suv that goes on sale early December. New Zealand will offer buyers a choice of RX 350 and RX 450h models in varying grade levels. RX350 is powered by a 3.5-litre direct injection 221kW, 370Nm v6, with all-wheel drive via a new eight-speed transmission. RX 450h hybrid, also all-wheel drive, has a 230kW total system power (engine and electric motor) and a CvT transmission. Both models will be available in entry, F Sport and limited grades. RX’s look is highlighted by the lexus signature spindle grille with a chrome-plated surround, triple l-shaped leD headlamps (F Sport and limited grades) and all new leD fog lights and daytime running lights. From the rear, l-shaped taillights wrap around the sides of the vehicle to create a wide profile and authoritative presence. All RX models feature newly designed 20” alloy wheels. The lexus Safety System + helps avoid or lessen

collisions across a wide range of vehicle speeds. it integrates several of lexus’ existing active safety technologies into one package, including Pre-Crash Safety System, lane Departure Alert, lane Keeping Assist (lKA), Automatic High Beam, and All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. The new RX cabin features high levels of luxury and comfort and lexus-first features such as laser-cut wood ornamentation (limited), which was developed by yamaha to provide an extra feeling of sophistication.

gO ANyWHeRe leXuS lX 570, the flagship lexus Suv, has had a major styling makeover with only the door panels carried forward from the previous model. efficiency and performance is improved with an eight-speed automatic gearbox replacing the old model’s six speed unit. The 5.7-litre v8 engine remains unchanged as lexus says it has more than sufficient performance

with 270kW of power and 530Nm of torque. inside, lexus went from dashboard to tailgate to increase the luxury appointment of the lX 570 with a new wood trim and heated and ventilated second row seats to complement those in the front. Standard equipment and price will be announced later this year.

Rear seat occupants will be treated to more legroom, and newly-developed seats are available with heating (F-Sport and limited) and power reclining (limited) features that both enhance convenience and provide a sophisticated, luxurious feel. RX’s fully independent suspension system, with MacPherson struts at the front and double wishbone at the rear, has been tuned to deliver improved handling performance and ride comfort. RX F Sport has Adaptive variable Suspension (AvS); the driver can select the AvS-enhanced Sport S+ mode, in addition to eco, Normal and Sports S settings, via the Drive Mode

Select control located on the centre console. Full specification and pricing will be announced at launch. www.eastlife.co.nz

Going hyper over blue Subaru of New Zealand is going Hyper Blue with the launch of two limited edition sports variants in the eye-catching one-off colour scheme. The Hyper Blue models come with unique details that will help their buyers stand out from the crowd even more. The WRX Premium Hyper Blue

Limited Edition, which retails for $56,990, boasts blacked-out 18” BBS alloy wheels, door mirrors and badges, plus blue stitched leather seats, centre console, door trim, gear shift knob, gear shift boot cover and steering wheel. The STi version with the same features, and a rear spoiler, retails for $65,990.

Just five WRX Premium SLTs and five WRX STI Premiums are available in the distinctive hue.

AMG GT S right on track

A sharper Focus The high-performance 2016 Focus RS is expected to arrive at Ford New Zealand dealerships from mid-2016. Producing maximum power of 257kW / 440Nm from its specially tuned 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine, mated to a sophisticated all-wheel drive system, allnew Focus RS will retail for $69,880. There are four ‘drive mode’ settings, including an industry-first ‘drift mode’. Focus RS has its own unique exterior appearance, which gives the vehicle a more muscular and powerful character. The design has been optimised around the more extreme functional requirements for the RS, including cooling for the engine and brakes and aerodynamic performance.

With a lap time of 1:35.57 minutes, Mercedes-AMG GT S achieved one of the top three times ever recorded in the contest.

The Mercedes-AMG GT S continues to pick up awards. Last month US car magazine Motor Trend chose the V8 sports car as its “Best Driver’s Car”. AMG GT S lined up against nine other sports cars at the Laguna Seca race track in California, where it easily achieved the best lap time. www.eastlife.co.nz

“The Mercedes-AMG GT S has the sharpest, most precise steering we have ever felt on any Mercedes or AMG vehicle,” said Motor Trend editor-in-chief, Ed Loh. “It makes massive power from a compact, high-tech turbocharged V8 engine. “What most impressed my team is how well the GT S was able to combine these elements.

Inside, Focus RS has a host of unique sporting features and detailing including signature RS-branded Recaro shell seats; binnacle gauges displaying turbocharger boost pressure, oil temperature and oil pressure; and distinctive blue RS stitching on the seats, steering wheel, floor mats and interior trim.

“It put all of its horsepower to the ground like an all-wheel-drive supercar and gripped the road through high-speed corners like a winged racer.” At the end of the long and extensive series of test drives, the Motor Trend editors concluded that the GT S is “the best sports car Mercedes has ever built”. eastlife | november 2015 |
