Rock-a-hula, Baby! When winter first made itself felt a couple of months back I vowed this was the year to avoid the cold as much as possible. And I’m making good on that promise to myself.

Beauty pageants for young, single women abound but there are few that acknowledge married women. However, Mrs India 2015 in Auckland last month revealed not only the physical beauty but the inner beauty as well as the opinions and abilities of married Indian women. This month’s cover shot showcases local contestant Shaheen Ali, a director of Oceanz Seafood Botany, who won three titles and whose pageant story appears on page 17. Two quick trips to Australia, eight weeks apart, gave some respite from our bone-chilling frosts although neither short break was exactly tropical. But, finally I can look forward to some real summer weather – it’s Hawaii here I come. So, as EastLife hits the drop boxes I’ll be sipping cocktails and having some ‘rockin’ fun in the sun, a-slicin sand!’ Or at least that’s how the King – Elvis – told it in his classic movie, Blue Hawaii. Of course, I will miss the rugby action . No, I’ll be back for the World Cup. I’m talking about six- year-old grandson’s efforts on the field. Now starting to grasp the rudiments of the game, albeit in its very junior form, he is starting to show some natural pace – from those long, long legs – and is even scoring tries!

Finally, who is feeling the joy of daffodils and tulips, irises, jonquils and earlicheer flourishing in local gardens and filling florist shops, too? Indeed, spring is here!

Books aside, this month’s EastLife includes our Q & A with one of New Zealand’s most enduring entertainers – comedienne, dancer and a true entrepreneur, Debbie Dorday. This ageless performer who can still hip-swing and high kick now lives north of Auckland but once was a Howick local.

That’s why I’m so thrilled that new children’s book, Piri’s Big All Black Dream, by Jared Bell has hit the nark with the little one. It featured in last month’s EastLife, and I just had to have a copy for three-year old. It really is tailor-made for very little rugby dreamers, a delightful – and true – story about one of our most celebrated All Blacks, Piri Weepu.

Hear their take on popular numbers by the likes of Michael Jackson and Queen. More information can be found at uxbridge.org.nz.

Legendary Vocal Groups September 22, 11am-1pm, Picton Centre, 120 Picton Street, Howick While Madonna Ciccone might justify charging hundreds of dollars a ticket, the good folk at the Picton Centre wouldn’t dream of it! Instead they’ve brought together a star-studded lineup featuring such greats as The Drifters, Platters, Temptations, Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, The Beatles and The Supremes while charging a whole lot less. Q&A

WITH

Debbie Dorday

Over the past 16 years there will be many who have watched the inimitable Debbie Dorday, dance, sing and bring laughter to audiences all over the country. She and show biz partner, Jim Joll take their two-person show to big and small towns, north and south, but perhaps New Zealand will best remember the former Bucklands Beach and Howick resident as the high-kicking star who brought theatre/restaurant, Burgundy’s to Parnell. For 12 years she gave Auckland the kind of show time that hadn’t been seen here before and hasn’t been seen since. where were you born and raised? when did you first come to nz and when did you return after your years in london? I was born in Hartfordshire but spent my young childhood in New Zealand. I returned to London aged 9 but then came back to New Zealand, settling in Manurewa, with my husband where our three Kiwi kids were born. We later moved east to Bucklands Beach and Howick and were there right throughout the kid’s schooling and my years at Burgundy’s. We never returned to live in England. you father was a clergyman, as was your grandfather and uncle, was there a time when you thought of a religious vocation? Do you still have links to a church? No links to the church now but, besides all the clergy, my grandmother, Constance Maude Clougher was a missionary and in 1907 went to the highlands of New Guinea to teach and preach. How brave was she? But, no, I never felt a call in that direction. On the other hand, preaching and performing are probably quite similar – you gotta hold the audience’s attention with a touch of razzle-dazzle! what spurred your mother into sending you to a stage school in london when you were just 10 years old? were you already a ‘dancer’ or involved in drama and what was education like in such a school. Looking back, this is funny. I was talented at ballet from a young age and my dad thought I should audition for the Sadler Wells Ballet School. But when we left Ngaruawahia for London, my mother wanted me to audition for a stage school instead. She said: “you’ll learn acting, all types of dancing and singing too, but don’t tell Daddy!” Well, I successfully auditioned and was there for seven years. It was also

6 | eastlife | september 2015

an agency for stage kids so lots of hard work – TV, film work, modelling, all of which paid for the school’s high fees. Daddy never did know it wasn’t Sadler Wells. We didn’t lie, he just didn’t ask. Had he done so he probably wouldn’t have minded as he was always proud of me. Because students were always doing acting jobs, the standard of education was a bit low so I had to do some catch up along the way. The school wanted me to do drama and musical comedy in London as a career but one day, without asking anyone, I auditioned for the MOULIN ROUGE in Paris, packed my case said, ‘bye bye’. I was just 17.

in the show and the dancers were like family so it was very tough to give it all away. The lease was up and I was burnt out. The saddest night was the last night – after 12 solid years of wonderful shows, it was all over. in the early days of Burgundy’s your daughter was part of the show too – is she the same Jodie Dorday who appeared in series such as Xena Warrior Princess, and Burying Brian?

For the next couple of years I travelled all over Europe with some fabulous shows. But by 20, I had met my first husband, Alan Dorday. After my dad married us in his Sussex church, we headed for New Zealand to settle down and have a family. I didn’t put on dance shoes or eyelashes again..,well, until much later, that is!

yes, the same Jodie. We shared the stage at Burgundy’s for five years. We loved dancing and doing comedy together. Then she told me she wanted to do drama. She is instinctive and a natural at playing characters. Jodie played many parts during a time when there was a lot of theatre, film and television dramas going on. She now lives in Australia with her Aussie husband and little boy Jackson but misses the stage and NZ. However she tells me she is looking for the right play so one day she and I can tour NZ living in vans like gypsies!

how did you come to start Burgundy’s in Parnell and what ended it all?

have either of your other two children, Jason and Joshua, been bitten by the showbiz bug?

By the time the children were at school I was missing the stage and dancing so I started working in Auckland shows – Annabelle’s nightclub, television and others. Many shows later I started dreaming of a theatre restaurant with a classy show and fabulous costumes. I found an old cinema in Parnell, auditioned Kiwi dancers, designed costumes, employed staff and then took a deep breath.

Neither took to the stage and were young at the time of Burgundy’s so were tucked up in bed at home.

With huge help from my second husband, Mike, and the kids, I opened Burgundy’s which ran from 1984 until 1996. The dream had come true and the shows were a roaring success but working so hard, day and night, took its toll. Financially it was tough too with up to 42 staff to worry about. My daughter Jodie was

The dancers (I keep in touch) still tell me that Burgundys was the best time and they were so happy being able to earn a living performing for 12 years. But, when the theatre closed, I really thought my stage days were over. Then I met the amazing Jim Joll. Little did I know that for 16 years – and still going strong – he and I, backed by

Burgundy’s forged a new era in auckland’s entertainment industry and it was an overwhelming part of your life. Do you miss performing and managing the big event and do you ever mourn the fact that there’ll never been another, “See you at Burgundy’s!”

my husband Mike, would perform in virtually every little and big town up and down the country. The singing, comedy, and well costumed shows are exhausting but we all love it, as do audiences. If we, or they didn’t, I wouldn’t bother but for now I still get that buzz, so I’m very lucky. what does your present two-person road show with Jim require and how often are you away travelling? After meeting Jim I was well rested and up for a challenge. Together we sorted a fresh road show with 50 costumes, lights, sound, equipment – all this, plus one husband, and one show partner in two motor homes and a trailer! For 16 years we’ve travelled from Invercargill to Whangarei, Gisborne to the West Coast, over and over. It is a true show business adventure entertaining all sorts and all ages. We are away about five times a year for several weeks on end. We need to be very versatile and have built up seven different shows so, now, we get repeat bookings from year to year. at your stage of life, what toll does the show take on your stamina or are you staying a few pirouettes ahead? EastLife understands you still go full throttle to give audiences a ‘knock your socks off’ experience. Knocking people’s socks off is great but it can be strenuous. However, as long as I get a good night’s sleep and eat well, it’s all good, even if a couple of pain killers and a bit of chocolate is the norm before going on stage – haha, don’t tell, Jim! Many people think of you as a dancer, but you have regaled audiences as a comedienne, and entertained them as a singer – how much of your stage persona is the ‘real’ Debbie Dorday and do you take her home with you? www.eastlife.co.nz

I think I am two different people. Debbie Dorday on stage is full-on; off stage I’m quite quiet and a housewife too. But, stick on my eyelashes and slip into fishnets then away I go. That’s the Debbie most people recognise! how long do you think you can keep up the shows and what does the future hold? We’ll go on as long as we can give people a show to remember – and I can still put on the silver heels. The future is my other life, my family. A wonderful husband and five lovely little grandchildren keep me laughing. if you could give an academy award to any three new zealand performers who would they be and why? That’s easy, I’d give Academy Awards to all performers who put their full energy and talent into live shows and never let their audiences be disappointed no matter what! Jim Joll would deserve one and so would the NZ Ballet Company. tell us one thing about yourself that people aren’t likely to know. When I was 12 years old, in a play in the West End, I completely buggered up the lines and never wanted to get on a stage again. I have never told anyone this including my mum although my agent was informed. Funny thing, I had forgotten that until you asked. if you could, which three people (living or dead) would you invite to dinner and why? The missionary grandmother I never knew would be one, Graham Norton to keep it light and funny and I’d mix it up with Bette Midler cos she is still going as strong and wonderful as ever. www.eastlife.co.nz

Although Victoria Koszegi dipped out of the 2015 MasterChef New Zealand race in episode five, she hasn’t given up on the dream of opening her own cafe or restaurant. However, a booming real estate market is presently keeping the local Barfoot and Thompson consultant on her toes. So, while planning is very much a hot potato, she has no date in mind yet.

“First I need to find the right location and the right people – you don’t want to go into something like this hare-brained. And, while the real estate industry is strong I also have a chance to build up some funds to make the proper start.”

Victoria who studied hotel management in Australia and is a graduate of the prestigious Swiss Hotel Association, was involved in hospitality for a number of years overseas before returning to New Zealand some three years ago. “I entered the MasterChef contest after seeing an advertisement on television,” she says. “Friends who know my passion for food urged me to have ago and I thought, ‘why not? Life is too short not to try’.” Though she admits the first cookoff was nerve-wracking Victoria comfortably made the Top 24. “I was then lucky to be picked in the first eight who went straight into the

MasterChef house. The remaining 16 had to cook off for the other eight places.” Moving into the house with 15 new companions had its challenges. “But everyone was very respectful of each other and, really, we bonded well considering our different personalities and temperaments.” Of course, in the MasterChef kitchen there were highs and heartaches. “It all looks so easy when you watch the programme on TV. I used to think, ‘I can do that, or that’s a cut or vegetable I would have no trouble with. But, in reality, it was a lot tougher than I expected.”

And it was, indeed, a tough night that Victoria encountered on the evening she left the MasterChef kitchen – “nothing went to plan and once things went wrong, I just couldn’t pull it back.” However she says she wouldn’t have missed the experience for anything. “It was so encouraging meeting like-minded people who shared a common interest in food and cooking. Many had similar aims and I think our enthusiasm rubbed off on each other. “It was also fabulous to meet such talented chefs in our judges. They were all inspiring but, in particular, I really enjoyed Al Brown who gave such good advice and was so encouraging. His city restaurant, The Depot has long been a favourite of mine so learning from him was a huge bonus.” Although now out of the MasterChef contest, and back working in real estate with her mother, well-known local, Anne Koszegi, Victoria says she is still following the series on TV. “I’m backing Sarah and hope she makes it through although I also hope Hayley and Richard do well too. But whoever takes the big prize is sure to deserve it.”

SLAEVE to love Auckland Teen, Ezekiel Crawford, was taking it from the streets (inspiration, that is) recently when the cutting edge fashion designer had his turn on the catwalk at NZ Fashion Week. There, the young designer turned heads with his SLAEVE Clothing label, which is designed to blend internet sub-culture with high-end street wear, inspired by Auckland City itself. Ezekiel says his style concept, ‘pale-street’, draws heavily on the new ‘pale’ aesthetic, characterised by a sense of minimalism and clean lines. “I create because I love it. For me, creating provides meaning and purpose that I otherwise wouldn’t have... We use only the best materials, and a luxurious texture is very important to us. As soon as you try on one of our garments, you can feel the difference in quality straight away!” Fashion Week organisers were so impressed that a second show was later staged with Ezekiel’s garments incorporated alongside those of more established brands.

Smile wins judges vote ‘ There’s no disputing that Shaheen Ali is beautiful. With her sultry eyes, clear skin and youthful energy it’s hard to believe the 2015 Mrs India contestant, who combines business, parenthood and study, also had time for the Auckland pageant. Shaheen talked to HELEN PERRY about the experience.

Beauty pageants have often come under fire for promoting an idealised view of women. So, when law student, mum of two and a hands-on director of Oceanz Botany, Shaheen Ali was asked to enter Mrs India it was, in her words, ‘a bit of a shock.’ “However, I decided to accept the invitation because over the years I’ve learnt that womanhood can be expressed in many different ways and who is to say which is the most valid? “I’ve always believed in beauty and brains, in fact, they can work very well together,’ she laughs. “And I reject the idea that only the unintelligent or shallow enter beauty contests; that’s laughable. I believe we have been created with inner and outer beauty and this contest recognised both as well as encouraging and paying tribute to confidence, dignity and intellect.” Although initially hesitant, Shaheen says the whole experience gave her a better appreciation and understanding of the benefits such a competition can have. “While there was an element of politics involved, the contest provided opportunities to form some great friendships, acquire greater self-assurance, gain a new learning experience, and generally to express those qualities special to women. It was also a chance to exhibit inner and outer beauty in a whole new way.” One of 13 contestants, with the ultimate title going to Rupal Solanki, Shaheen says she couldn’t be happier after taking out three titles – best smile, best interview and best makeup. “And I couldn’t have done it all without the enormous support from my mother who was there to help every step of the way.” The entrants’ long day started with the interview process in the morning then carried on to the talent section from which seven were chosen to perform at the evening event. Shaheen was one of the seven and sang a Sufi song reflecting on the spiritual aspect and dimensions of Islam. www.eastlife.co.nz

Then it was on to the Indian wear section and beachwear before the glittering pageant that night during which the evening wear was judged. “The final night was a unique experience mixed with excitement and nervousness. But it was so enjoyable. I felt I related well to the other women, and while we all brought something individual to the contest, we also had a lot in common. “My life has been enriched by the experience; it was another way to excel and to win best smile was truly meaningful. I’ve been through a few hurdles myself so I hope that smile reflected my inner beauty.”

learning in New Zealand really was wonderful.” After she and Ali married, they became parents to Shabal and Alisha, and also worked in their respective fields before eventually buying Oceanz Seafood, Albany. “We later sold the Albany business and bought Oceanz Botany which keeps us really busy as we are still living in Albany!” says Shaheen. “But the future looks bright and once I am finally through my degree I have a lot I want to do.”

I’ve always believed in beauty and brains, in fact, they can work very well together,’ she laughs. And I reject the idea that only the unintelligent or shallow enter beauty contests; that’s laughable. I believe we have been created with inner and outer beauty and this contest recognised both.”

With the pageant now over, Shaheen is again concentrating on her law studies at Auckland University of Technology – three days a week – even though she also spends two days a week at Oceanz and has two children to keep her on her toes, an eight-year-old son and a daughter aged five years. “I’m a woman after all and used to multi-tasking,” she says with that winning smile. “Ultimately, though, I want to establish an institution to promote the wellbeing of women and especially those Indian women who come to this country, are struggling with the language, and possibly abuse and are still very much subject to some of the prejudices of their homeland. “These women make many sacrifices; the least they deserve is to have their own identity and dignity which can lead to greater satisfaction in life.” And Shaheen well knows what it’s like to face leaving her homeland and embarking on a new life. her father died when she was 14 years old and then at 16 she and her future husband, Ali came to New Zealand. They both studied at Victoria University in Wellington where they gained business management degrees. “My dad instilled in me an eagerness to learn and eastlife | september 2015 |

Young designer cloaked in glory Sewing a fine seam was crucial for former local, Khrishae Teriaki, when she knew 10 garments created by students from her NZ Fashion Tech diploma course would be chosen for a New Zealand Fashion Week event. Her care and creativity paid off when she stitched up the top prize edging out the nine other finalists selected to walk the runway in the 2015 Resene NZ Fashion Tech Colour of Fashion challenge. Taking their inspiration from the vibrant colours of India, whilst also embracing the ‘summer-season’ Resene paint colours, each outfit was designed and made from beautiful hand-loomed Indian silk saris. Khrishae chose a dazzling cobalt blue based on paint colour, Resene Resolution Blue, for her hooded coat and dress, a contemporary take on Little Red Riding Hood and cleverly made from one sari. “I wanted it to be edgy but at the same time bold and beautiful,” she says. The contemporary feel and “flowiness” Khrishae aimed for won the approval of the judges, fashion curator, Doris de Pont; Director of NZ Fashion Tech, Val Marshall-Smith; and Marketing Manager of Resene Paints, Karen Warman. Val Marshall-Smith said “It’s a look I can see any of the world’s leading

young fashion influencers wanting to wear to a glamour event. “It carries bold colour well, it responds well to the brief and it makes skilful use of the five metres of fabric Khrishae had to work with. To make both a coat and a dress from her sari was exceptional.” Growing up in Maraetai, and now living in Mangere, Khrishae says hoodies were always her favourite garment and she’s made countless numbers of them, but this has to be her most amazing effort. Her prize from the Resene competition is a trip for two to Dunedin to attend two shows at iD Dunedin Fashion, as a member of the audience, in 2016. But with the first stage of the New Zealand/India education collaboration for NZ Fashion Week (August 24-30) now over, Khrishae and 19 other Prime Minister’s Scholarship winners, including Samantha Williams from Pakuranga and Samuel Malloy, from Farm Cove, will also travel to India in November for another career-defining opportunity. There, 20 outfits including eight that opened the four Resene Designer Selection Shows will be recreated in new colours and will be shown at a fashion show hosted by the Bannari Amman Institute of Technology at its vast and modern university campus in Sathyamangalam, Southern India.

David Fels, owner of Showcase Jewellers, Howick, says jewellery is all about love – true love, friendship, families, even pieces you’ve fallen in love with. That’s why he and his team love hearing your stories and making your dreams come true. There are no two ways about it: jewellery is good for the soul. The ring thing Who doesn’t love a beautiful ring? The message here is to have fun. Large, statement cocktail rings are like loud personalities: they don’t like competition. So keep other fingers free of bling. Stacking rings can look fabulous; be sure the rings have flat edges and single stones, so they all sit neatly. Don’t be afraid to wear contrasting ring styles on each finger: rings are made for visual interest, so matching them isn’t important.

Necklaces: the golden rules There are many ways to go when it comes to adorning the neck. Here are some handy tips next time you’re pondering which direction to take. • LAYERS – Mixing and matching necklaces can look casual cool when done right. Just make sure the lengths and shapes are varied and stop short of three strands. • DRAPING NECKLACES – These are strands that go low, nearly to your

“Master, what is the path to good health?”

be undone with a dysfunctional thyroid.

“Why do you ask, Grasshopper?”

6. Get rid of parasites, bad bugs and fungi. They will steal your nutrients and put toxins in your body.

“Because I see so many people around us unwell, sick and dying. It grieves me Master.” “Grasshopper, our bodies were meant to live in a certain way. The further we stray from that path, the sicker we become. Some people get sicker faster and more deeply, but it all comes from moving away from how we have evolved to live. Alas, knowing the path is not enough. You have to want it enough.”

7. Enjoy your life. This is how it is meant to be. Unhappiness, stress and anger will kill you as surely as an arrow through the heart. 8. M ove as you were meant to move. Our bodies were designed to exercise. It does everything from turning on good genes to cleaning cell receptors. “Master what are cells…...?”

1. S leep well and wake refreshed. When sleeping you repair and balance for the new day. You need a minimum of 7 hours each night. 2. Digest and absorb your food. Most people put food and supplements in their mouth, but only part of them are used because they do not have enough stomach acid or stomach enzymes to digest the food or supplements. Heal and nurture your gut. It is where all the action happens.

“Shut up Grasshopper, I’m on a roll.” 9. Reduce the toxins entering your body: food additives, chemicals, pesticides, and so much more. 10. Focus on what’s truly important in life: loving someone/something that is more important than you, looking forward to things both short and long term, being of service to others and finding and following your great dream.

3. Put good things in your mouth. Eat real food. Things that your body needs, not that just taste nice. Life is to be enjoyed, but not at the expense of death.

“Master, is this like the ten commandments of health?” “No, Grasshopper, shut your face. I haven’t finished.”

• Avocado – Avocado is high in potassium, vitamin E, heart-healthy fats and fibre. Avocados are great for your skin as well as your heart health. The mono unsaturated fats in avocado have been shown to reduce belly fat. Eat 1-2 avocados per week maximum, as they are high in calories.

4. F ind your body’s deficiencies. We are all different. Find out what it is that your body needs that it is not getting. In this time of depleted soil and toxins, sadly, we all have deficiencies.

11. Be as great as you were meant to be. Most of us live our lives being busy. We settle for second best. Listen to your little voice. We all have one. Be as great as you were destined to be.

• Hot Chillies – All chillies have a thermo-genic effect and have been shown to reduce appetite and increase metabolism. 1tsp daily of chopped, dried or powdered chilli, if you can tolerate it will do the trick.

5. Find your weakest parts. You are only as strong as your weakest parts. Find them and fix them. A strong heart, a quick brain can

• Quinoa – Quinoa is an ancient grain (actually a seed) with high fibre and protein content. It is also a valuable source of zinc, magnesium and folate. Have half a cup, measured cooked, every second day, with a protein and salad for lunch. • Salmon – Fresh salmon is high in Omega 3 fatty acids which are good for your heart and your

metabolism. Have an 85g-125g serve for one – three times a week. • Green vegetables – Think spinach, kale, silverbeet, broccoli, courgettes and Brussels sprouts. These are great disease fighters with very little calorie content. Aim for 1-2 cups cooked every day. • Low fat cottage cheese – Low fat dairy is a great recovery food post exercise. The calcium in low fat dairy has also been shown to facilitate fat burning. Have half a cup every second day. • Berries – Fresh or frozen, all berries, but especially blueberries, are super low in calories yet packed with disease-fighting antioxidants. Use daily in smoothies, with oats or muesli and in yoghurt. • Venison – New Zealand venison is a super lean, high protein red meat. Use weekly as steak, sausages, mince or patties. • Cocoa – Use in its raw and unsweetened state, in smoothies and bliss balls, or as dark chocolate, preferably over 70% cocoa. High in anti-oxidants and just enough to fill the craving without triggering over-eating. Have 2-4 squares three times a week. www.eastlife.co.nz

Dealing with stress Talk to the team at your local Jetts club for more health tips and exercise information. This article is provided by Olly Coffey, Development and Support for mibodycoach.com, and consultant to Jetts 24-Hour Fitness. There are three factors we all have control over when aiming to improve our health and fitness. The first two, diet and exercise, are obvious. The third – stress – is sometimes overlooked.

require this physical response. A missed appointment, heavy traffic, skipping a meal or a bad night’s sleep, in isolation, are easy to cope with.

Addressing your lifestyle is as important as watching what you eat and partaking in regular physical activity. Another key element in lifestyle management is limiting stress levels.

Each of these small stressors, however, drives the body to release stress hormones and sends our body into what is termed a catabolic state. Our immune system is suppressed and our body actually breaks down its tissues to fuel its immediate survival.

The body views all stresses as lifethreatening. In response to stress, it temporarily shuts down ‘non-critical’ bodily functions, such as the immune system, so it can ‘fight’, or ‘flee’ from the immediate threat it is facing. This primal mechanism is designed to help save our lives when faced with danger.

In times of chronic stress, our body is continually exposed to catabolic hormones. We can become sick due to a suppressed immune system and our muscle, bone and connective tissues will slowly begin to break down.

In today’s world, however, most of the stresses we face don’t

eating, or how active you are, if your body is stressed, you will find it hard to improve your health and fitness. Of course, elements of your lifestyle can be controlled to ensure that you don’t subject yourself to chronic stress. Here are simple steps you can take: • Be organised: Worrying about deadlines, complaining about hectic schedules or feeling like there are not enough hours in the day is often a product of being disorganised. • Sleep: Sleep is vital. This is when the body recovers and rebuilds. If you have a poor night’s sleep, aim to get to bed earlier the next night and don’t push yourself.

• Stretch and recover: If you are feeling run down, tired or lacking energy, focus on stretching, breathing and reduce the intensity of your workout for that day. Find the time to relax and take some time out, even if just for 5 minutes while you listen to your favourite music! • Drink water, eat nutritious foods: Your body views poor nutrition, or becoming dehydrated, as a threat to your life. Feed your body nutritious foods and drink regularly. • Ask for help or delegate: Sometimes, when you are busy, it is better to stop and take stock of a situation or your schedule. If you can delegate a task to someone else, this may be the best course of action.

Power off family on campaign Overuse of smartphones, tablets, computers and television is contributing to some Kiwi kids being overweight, overtired, and under-achieving at school. EastLife looks at the problem. With more than half of all New Zealand children indulging in more than two hours of screen time per day – according to Ministry of Health figures – clinical psychologist Nigel Latta says parents are struggling with the issue of how much screen time is too much. “The scientific consensus is pretty clear that ideally children should have no more than two hours per day of screen time, but it’s also very clear these guidelines are being ignored all over the developed world,” says Latta. “However, this is not just about setting boundaries for kids, but also setting boundaries for ourselves. Research also shows that, in general, parents’ personal screen time use, and their attitudes towards it, is a significant predictor of how much screen time children have.”

Nigel Latta’s Top Tips: Screen Time Nigel Latta suggests parents follow these five key steps if they are concerned about the amount of screen time in their children’s everyday lives:

Latta, an ambassador for the Hyundai Power Off/Family On campaign this month, says research clearly supports the idea that excessive time with smartphones, tablets, computers and television can have a negative effect on children.

1. Lead by example. Set limits on your own use first.

He says the nationwide campaign, which encourages families to switch off and spend time together during the weekend of the September 5 and 6 is a great way for parents to introduce the concept of a ‘power off’ time to kids.

3. Set limits for everyone about where devices can be used, such as: • No devices at the dinner table

“Technology is great,’ says Latta, “it opens up all kinds of exciting possibilities, but like everything it’s a matter of balance.”

2. Decide exactly what kind of devices children need and when they need them. For example, a nine-year-old probably doesn’t need a mobile phone; you also don’t need every kind of device in the world.

“Sleeping near a small screen, sleeping with a TV in the room, and more screen time are all associated with shorter sleep durations and later bedtimes for kids.”

With one-third of Kiwi kids currently classed as overweight, international studies show there is a clear relationship between increased screen time and increased BMI as it reduces activity levels and sleep time.

Performance at school also suffers. One Spanish study of adolescents found that the more screen time young people had, the worse they did in school, with similar studies around the globe finding that high screen time was associated with poorer mental health and academic outcomes.

Reduced sleep time is of serious concern given how important it is for developing brains and mental health, adds Latta.

“All this clearly shows that parents are right to be concerned about the impact of excessive screen time and so initiatives like the Hyundai

www.eastlife.co.nz

• No devices at cafes • No devices at grandma’s house • No looking at a screen during an actual conversation with an actual person • No devices after a set time each night. 4. Make offline life as interesting as you can by encouraging children to be involved in real world activities. 5. Have regular ‘device-free’ days or evenings where the family does something together that doesn’t involve screen time. For more information on the Hyundai Power Off/ Family On initiative, visit www.poweroff.co.nz

Power Off/Family On campaign are important,” Latta says. “It’s not any single issue, but the sum of all the different parts which is the problem. “If your child is not getting as much sleep, not getting much exercise, their social contact is reducing, and they are becoming increasingly dependent on screens for positive feelings, then all of those things are creating an imbalance.” “Technology isn’t bad. In fact, technology is great and it affords our children opportunities we could never have dreamed of. But the trick is keeping it all in balance. Not too

much, not too little.” Mums and dads also need to learn to ‘switch off’ more in order to set a better example for kids. “You can’t set limits on your children if you don’t set limits on yourself,” says Latta. “If you’re sitting checking emails, and Facebook, and reading the online newspapers, it’s no different to them being on their consoles or Instagram. If you want your children to power off, then you have to power off too. “You have to show them that real life happens in real life and not in posts or status updates.” eastlife | september 2015 |

Local’s watercolour world Multi-award-winning Pakuranga painter, Amanda Brett, displays a unique perspective on the world. After recently returning from a sojourn to Italy, the gifted artist spoke with JON RAWLINSON.

Rome all you want to but Tuscany is the place to be, according to accomplished local painter, Amanda Brett. Widely travelled – having painted towns in a number of Asia-Pacific countries – she says her latest journey to Tuscany fuelled both inspiration and motivation. “I hadn’t realised before travelling how important new stimulation is for my art. So far, about 45 paintings [have resulted from the trip] – maybe with a couple of works in progress. That’s a lot of work in a relatively short time for me.” Over a four-month period – three in Lucca, Tuscany; the remaining time spent visiting Rome, Cassino and Venice – the watercolourist, who specialises in still life and street scenes, avoided the tourist traps to focus on the nuances of everyday life. “I’m a city girl, so I need to embrace that. Life is what happens when we’re involved and busy doing our thing,” she says. “There are enough paintings of monuments in the world and nowhere near enough of real people in real environments.” Her medium appears well matched to her subject matter. “When you’re out in the street, you have to really observe what’s going on. Fast paintings [of busy scenes] are usually good in watercolour. “And why would you want to paint with anything else? Watercolour is so beautiful, luminescent; it runs crazy, if you let it, and almost paints for you. There are always plenty of beautiful surprises and you just have to relax and let it happen. There is a challenge though, because it doesn’t want to be controlled.” While Amanda says she prefers to capture life as it unfolds – rather than paint from sketches or photographs – after snapping plenty of pictures some lingering tastes of Tuscany could yet develop. “I do take time to set up, to observe www.eastlife.co.nz

and check out the light but, basically, I just jump straight in. I have 7500 photos on my camera and another 3500 on my phone. I may do some painting based on them, but after spending all those beautiful days painting outdoors, it’s so boring to paint from a photo!”

counsellor to discuss pursuing her studies at art school, was similarly disappointing.

By assisting students in ‘brushing up’ on their skills at a weekly class at Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts, in Pakuranga, she has learnt to better understand the intricacies of her own techniques.

“He said ‘Oh, don’t worry about that [going to art school], you’re only going to get pregnant!’ There was a lot of that attitude back then. But the good thing was that he set me a challenge; in a way, I have to thank that idiot for motivating me! Then again, how many girls did he say that to and it had the opposite effect? What a stupid man!”

After arriving home to an Auckland winter, Amanda is already set on a Tuscan return next year, while also planning an exhibition ‘when in Rome.’

“The big problem with artists teaching is that we do a lot of things intuitively, but to help someone achieve their goals, we need to truly understand what we’re doing in order to explain properly,” she says.

“The main purpose of the trip this year was for reconnaissance, to paint and build relationships. I had the best time, met some great people and the opportunities have just fallen into my lap,” she says.

Amanda turned a lifelong hobby into a profession just five years ago. However, experiences as an enthusiastic high school student almost curtailed her artistic aspirations.

“I’m all booked to go back. I have a workshop set to go at The Watermill in Tuscany and I’ve already received interest through my website – amandabrett.net. Personally, I’d go back next week, but students here in New Zealand will need some time to plan.”

“I was thrown out of art class!” she exclaims, “I presented my charcoal drawings to get into the class and the teacher asked if I was going to colour them in. I thought ‘I’m not coming to a colouring-in class!’” Later, a visit to a vocational

Fortunately, Amanda’s determination has led to life as an accomplished painter, winning approximately 35 awards and prizes, while receiving widespread recognition. “It’s not that I want to be famous at all, but it’s interesting when I’m walking down the street and someone comes up to me. Although it is better when I have makeup on; a lot of the time I’ll be in my ‘uglies’ or just out for a run or something! “Overall though, I don’t have to sell paintings. That’s not what I’m in it for. I’m in it because I just love the process.” eastlife | september 2015 |

Cruisy family holiday Forget the Sloop John B or red sails in the sunset, P&O cruise liner, Pacific Jewel which took RACHEL WATTS over the ocean blue in style for seven nights, proved to be the ideal vessel for a costeffective family holiday. Few family holidays come cheap these days so, when planning a getaway for four, including a 16-yearold step-son and seven-year-old daughter, all thoughts turned to cruising as a way of satisfying our various wish lists. My one and only cruise experience was a four night, trans-Tasman break some 15 years ago with a group of girlfriends. The rest of the family had only dreamt of such a holiday. But I can’t say we had the perfect start. We expected some queues but found the long wait to board, and subsequent wait for luggage, daunting. Before we had actually left port, in Brisbane, we were having second thoughts. Luckily as we cast off, a festive ‘sailaway’ party was in full swing and we were soon relaxing with drinks in hand. The initial downhearted mood had lifted and, from that moment, it was all smooth sailing. From the outset, we each found our niche. The Kid’s Club was outstanding. Staff members were friendly, energetic and well organised. The club, which opened daily from 9am-10.30pm (closed noon till 2pm for lunch) offered a host of exciting activities – so many that daughter, Shanae was often torn between its full-on programme and the many other on board activities. There was also a teen drop-in centre but 16-year-old Bailey preferred to make the most of the swimming pool, spa and open air big screen. We adults also found plenty to keep us on the go. Then there were the Edge outdoor activities providing thrills for young and old such as a flying fox, the Segway obstacle course, a bungy trampoline, the Titanic Moment and much more. Although these were user pays, they were well worth the extra charge – a fantastic extra that many cruises do not offer. Night after night, a cavalcade of shows offered fabulous entertainment as did party events and the two formal evenings. There were four restaurants and several bars including the Oasis, restricted to adults and set apart at the rear of

the ship – lovely when you wanted to escape rowdy youngsters. Both partner, Stephen and I enjoyed a couple’s massage at the day spa (approximately $300 per couple) and, in advance of one of the formal nights, Shanae and I had our hair styled at the salon – a nice way for mums and daughters to enjoy some special time together. When it came to dining we could not fault the restaurants. We took most of our meals at The Pantry with its various cooking stations or at The Waterfront – a la carte. All meals at these venues were included in the fare and at The Waterfront, our waiter provided the best service we have ever encountered. However, Stephen, Bailey and I also booked into the upmarket Luna Restaurant for a special night out. The Asian-inspired banquet – Thai on the night we visited – was amazing. The food was beautiful and there was so much of it even our 16-year-old rugby player conceded defeat after vowing he was going to try it all!

Meals presentation, and hygiene in all restaurants, was outstanding and the two formal nights added a real sense of glamour. In addition, a new event, the Bianco Party night, for which all the decorations were white and everyone dressed in white, was one of the best party nights. Everyone entered the spirit of the occasion, dancing the night away. Strangely, some seasoned cruise travellers felt the entertainment onboard the Pacific Jewel was a little quiet compared to some ships but we didn’t find it so. In fact, we saw a different show every night and didn’t manage to cover all the activities offered. During our seven nights/eight days we enjoyed three days in port, first at Airlie Beach, then Cairns and finally, Port Douglas; the balance was just right for a short cruise. At Airlie Beach we spent the day lapping up the joys of the community lagoon and its activities (free of charge) and also visited the nearby markets – a pleasant departure from on board life.

The next day we docked at Yorkey’s Knob and spent the day in Cairns, visiting The Dome where the power jumps, rope courses with zip lines, and a mini zoo – koalas, reptiles, birds and crocodiles – kept us fully occupied. Final stop was lovely Port Douglas where we wandered the village area then made our way to the Wildlife Habitat – fascinating for our youngsters who really enjoyed this attraction. And if the animals we saw on shore thrilled us, so too did two sightings of whales and one of dolphins while we were at sea. These were all announced by the captain which gave everyone a chance to watch these wonderful mammals cavorting in their own habitat. As our seven days drew to an end, we were really regretful we hadn’t managed a slightly longer cruise, 10 or, perhaps, 14 days would have been great. Throughout, we were impressed by the ship’s cleanliness and the www.eastlife.co.nz

fare deal Our cruise on the Pacific Jewel was booked directly through P&O Cruises at a cost of just under $3500 for the four of us. By booking the early bird special we received a free room upgrade and $100 on board credit. Our fare price included accommodation, all meals at The Pantry or The Waterfront restaurants, on board entertainment and most activities.

attention to detail in our 4-berth cabin which was roomy enough for our purpose as we only slept and showered there. Replacement towels, creatively folded to represent animals, especially charmed our daughter. Perhaps the only disappointment was the final night when only one of the several bars fielded entertainment. It was packed so many missed out on seats and it

almost seemed as if our cruise was already over. We had hoped to end on a really high note – a last fun night – but it was decidedly quiet, leaving us feeling a little flat. But nothing could really detract from this fantastic family holiday which managed to provide for our different ages and preferences. It was great not having to lug baggage around, something that is particularly difficult when young children are in the

holiday mix and soon become tired of dragging their own small bags. We appreciated being able to unpack at the outset and thereafter forgot about suitcase living. With linen replacements and cleaning all done when we were out of sight, we had few chores to think about and felt we were treated like kings and queens. We couldn’t have asked for more and, now, it isn’t a matter of if we will cruise again but, when!

We joined the cruise in Brisbane, our flights costing just under $2000 for four. However, P&O cruises also depart from Auckland for Australian and Pacific Island destinations. Without that family airfare included, these are extremely cost-effective and may give a couple of extra nights on board. Bar drinks were generally around $7.95 for a range of beers and $10 for cocktails. At $26 per bottle for a sparkling wine, this was less than at most Auckland restaurants. A $49 per person soft drink package was available and this covered unlimited soft drinks for the duration of the cruise, especially suitable for the children.

Although great escapes from Auckland are more often reserved for summer, it is possible to find idyllic destinations not too far from home, with a warming winter welcomes on tap, as JON RAWLINSON discovered.

Spice up your Winter with theseup great Spice your vineyard Winter with packages! these great vineyard packages!

Expectation of a romantic weekend at Magic Cottages at Takou River fell away sharply when the All Blacks lost to the Wallabies on August 8. With the decider to be played while partner and I were supposed to be ‘off the grid’, what was a fan to do?

Visitors to Waiheke never fail to find things to do, places to see and superb vineyards and cafes to sample fine island-made wines and food. Tempted? Then try these gourmet options and make your way there with Fullers. Wine and Dine

Initial attempts at compromise fell flat when I said, although it was soon our anniversary and I did love her, I loved rugby first! So, I bit my tongue and soon after left thoughts (and views) of Eden Park in the rear vision mirror as we headed north to Takou River.

When tackling the drive from Auckland (approx 4 hours, 30 minutes) awash with stormy weather, I expletively questioned the validity of the expression ‘the winterless north’. To say Ian and Anna Sizer’s Takou River property is secluded is an understatement; although not too far off State Highway 10, it is a delightful oasis in harmony with its surrounding bush and native gardens. The couple has obviously worked very hard to create this oasis, yet also to make it seem effortlessly in keeping with its environment.

Featuring five self-contained cottages, varying in size, (partner and I stayed in the smallest, the Magic Cottage) the property really does allow guests to get away from it all. And yet, this is no ‘back to basics’ retreat. Sure, the Magic Cottage has no WiFi, cell phone reception or (shock horror!) TV, but it does have full kitchen facilities and internet available through the office and the nearby Lodge. Overall, finding the right word for this cosy (yet delightfully decorated and functional) cabin is tough, but I’ll give it a go... wow! Ian and Anna’s taste in decor is exquisite. All those little touches – such as fresh lilies on the nightstand and flowers floating in the cottage’s own private, outdoor bath (with hot water on tap) – stitch this luxurious fabric together.

While bereft of some ‘mod cons’, Takou River does offer outdoor activities, including kayaks to explore the river and bushwalks. Historic sites and crafty shopping are also in abundance nearby, particularly in Kerikeri, Waitangi and Paihia. Chilly temperatures and occasional showers saw partner and I favour sites and shopping over forest trails, although I did brave a very quick dip in the river!

Although this escape would be better suited to summer loving than as a winter getaway, bring the 4x4 (the road down is steep and could be difficult after heavy rain), a good book and (most importantly) great company, and it’s sure to offer a gratifying experience at any time of the year. So much so that as we grudgingly packed our bags on the final day, we wondered if it would be possible to simply claim squatters’ rights and barricade ourselves in!

On the ‘happy wife, happy life’ scale, Takou River raises the bar so high Olympic hurdlers would struggle to step up, and partner is already hinting (with the subtlety of a sledgehammer!) that we should return come summer. Oh, and thanks to the good folk at the Pioneer Restaurant & Bar in nearby Waipapa, (not to mention the missus, who was game for a meal) I didn’t miss the Bledisloe Cup decider after all. You see, lads, if you play your cards right, a man can have his romance and his footie too! • Note: Accommodation options vary; gourmet dinners and spa treatments are available with some packages. See takouriver.com for details.

A highlight of the stay was our evening in the Kiwi Hot Tub, as part of our Riverside Romance package. Sampling a bottle of bubbles, we soaked up the atmosphere in a little pool of pleasure while watching the river roll by.

A quick note: those keen on a little ‘glamping’ should also check out this option at Takou River. Located near the Kiwi Hot Tub, it’s glamping with a capital G!

Alpacas on show ‘Andes’ animals to have around the lifestyle block or farm, alpacas are becoming increasingly popular as pets, or to breed for their fleece and a number of EastLife readers south of Whitford, have them on their properties. What’s more, there are a good many other lifestylers who would just love to keep these charming animals in their bigger backyards but fear a lack of know-how.

Well, now’s the time to find out more. Just head to the 2015 Alpaca Expo at Mystery Creek Events Centre near Hamilton this month where visitors will see appealing alpacas by the score. The expo, which runs from September 18-20, encompasses the National Alpaca Show, the National Fleece Show, an alpaca photography competition, trade stalls and exhibitions plus a whole lot more.

Grant Latham from Shadow Wood Farm at Bombay says the expo is the biggest alpaca event on the calendar and is a great place to see the two main breeds, the many different colours and to learn about keeping these herd animals – “if buying you really need at least two,” he says, “and there will be opportunities to purchase.” For more information visit www.alpacaexpo.co.nz.

Leading the charge... Local resident and history buff CHRISTINE MILES gives the low down on the history behind some of our thoroughfares and well known places. Howick’s Union Road, which runs down the hill from Whitford Rd and back up the other side to Botany Rd, is reminiscent of the Union Charge in the Battle of Waterloo for which it is named. Howick historian, Alan La Roche says, “Union Road commemorates the Union Charge in the Battle of Waterloo, when the Royal Regiments, the Scots Greys and the Inniskillens from Ireland [commonly known as the Union Brigade] under Sir William Ponsonby … came over a ridge to see Napoleon’s troops below.

imagine sitting on one’s horse as the massed French army – thousands of men – came over the horizon. The stench and filth of war is easily overlooked and impossible to imagine by those who have not experienced it. It’s perfectly within one’s imagination though to feel pity for the boy soldier who cried out that he didn’t know the enemy was going to hurt him. Or to regret the death of a soldier whose fall exposes a picture of his wife carried in a trinket tied around his neck.

“They thundered down, annihilating over 2000 French troops using their big horses and sabres.”

But war is war so what really is the significance of the Union Charge?

In With Napoleon at Waterloo, British Cavalryman Dickson describes in detail the battle that was fought that day. From his memoirs, it’s easy to

Dickson writes: “It was not till afterwards that we soldiers learned what the Union Brigade had done that day, for a man in the fighting

ranks sees little beyond the sweep of his own sword. We had pierced three columns of 15,000 men, had captured two Imperial Eagles, and had stormed and rendered useless, for a time, more than 40 of the enemy’s cannon. “Besides, we had taken nearly 3000 prisoners, and, when utterly exhausted, had fought our way home through several regiments of fresh cavalry. That, my friends, is why, from the Prince Regent to the poorest peasant, from the palace to the lowliest cottage, the name

of the Union Brigade was honored throughout the land.” These days, it’s best not to charge down Howick’s Union Road, as if you’re part of the Union Charge. You’ll likely get clocked for speeding, and while paying a fine is painless compared to sacrificing one’s life, it’s still an option best avoided. STEPPING BACK IN TIME – YOUR CHANCE TO WIN Kupapa: The Bitter Legacy of Maori Alliances with the Crown While mainstream views of history can ‘gloss over’ more controversial and complex realities, historians such as former lawyer, Ron Crosby, delve into every aspect of any given case. In Kupapa, Ron explores the reality of the New Zealand Wars, confronting the widely held misconception that the wars between Crown and Maori featured clear lines of allegiance. Telling the story of Maori who (depending on definition and situation) were neutral or allied to the Crown, this book seeks to understand their motives in struggles with other native New Zealanders. From promises of security with the Treaty of Waitangi to (effectively) a series of bloody conflicts raging from 1845 to 1872, Kupapa proves civil wars are anything but. www.eastlife.co.nz

History is never clear cut; however, Ron provides an accessible, intricately crafted book which could be considered essential reading for anyone wishing to better understand our shared past. • Ron Crosby: Kupapa: The Bitter Legacy of Maori Alliances with the Crown | RRP $65 | Penguin NZ

Childcare made easy Rockabye Early Learning Centre takes the care and education of young children seriously. Today centre owner Caryn Mawkes has helpful tips to transition children into childcare. Knowing these secrets will make settling your children into childcare a breeze. Starting childcare is a big step, for children AND for parents. These tips are designed to take the stress out of the journey ahead. The most essential part is to ensure you and your child both settle into childcare as calmly and happily as possible. This transition process can take time and it is totally normal for parents to feel as if they are on an emotional roller coaster. Try and keep any negative emotion at bay in front of your child as he or she can pick up on these feelings which could make them apprehensive and anxious about childcare. Here are three important steps to settle your child into childcare.

Plan Prior to your child starting, arrange a visit to look around the centre. Many centres also like children to do several visits to help this settling process. These visits are usually short and sweet to begin with then gradually increase to longer periods. They will help you and your child to connect with teachers and are a perfect time to chat about your child’s individual routine and needs.

your child and make this an enjoyable experience no matter how nervous you feel. A valuable experience for you and your child is to prepare their own ‘special childcare bag’. This may include a comforting item from home that helps your son or daughter to feel safe and secure. Many centres also suggest including a family photo or a “Book about Me”. These pictures help calm and reassure a child that the teachers know the family.

Settle Walk away! Don’t look back! It can be so tempting to drag out this farewell; to have one last cuddle; or to pop back and sneak a peek to see how your child is settling in. It is so hard to do….I KNOW! However, it is helpful for your child to have a short, warm and loving goodbye. Dragging it out just makes the separation more painful. You can always go to the car and make a quick phone call to the teachers if you need to. Talk with them about how your child is settling in and consciously model a friendly and relaxed relationship with them. Children will trust those that you trust.

Before starting, talk to your child about this exciting new transition; there are various books in the library that may help put little minds at ease about starting childcare. A helpful one to read together could be, Maisy goes to Preschool.

Once children gain a sense of belonging, they will start exploring their surroundings, begin to engage in social activity and develop a passion for knowledge that sets them up for a lifetime of learning. Remember that every childcare centre has its own philosophy on how to assist children through the settling process. Ask the teachers if there are any tricks and tips that they recommend for settling your child into their new environment.

Kumara CLAIMS CROWN Beetroot has been beaten! In a shock result, a Kiwi veggie, the kumara, has left beetroot red faced in defeat as fortunes favour another flavour!

fish of The MonTh

HAPUKA

Hapuka is one of New Zealand’s premier fish species. If you’ve not tried hapuka before, then you’re in for a surprise. It’s everything you might expect in fish, and then a whole bunch more. It is moist, flavoursome and leaves a lingering taste that is unbeatable. Hapuka can grow up to 100kg in size. They are caught throughout New Zealand with smaller fish caught in coastal waters while the larger ones are found in depths of up to 800m. Hapuka is a good source of selenium. Selenium is an important nutrient that is necessary for a healthy immune system, for the production of thyroid hormones and the maintenance of hair and nails. Hapuka can be cooked in a variety of ways, however, always treat the fish with care to preserve its delicate flavour and succulence – allow it to be the star of your dish, rather than drowning it in sauce. For frying, heat a large pan with oil. Add the fish, carefully seal and brown for about three minutes. Turn over the fish, add some butter and cook for around another three minutes. Pour butter back over the fish and finish with a squeeze of lemon and parsley. Yum!

he adds. “Although it may not have come out top in the voting stakes, it is still a much loved staple on the plates of many New Zealanders.”

Inspired by the #VoteBeetroot campaign launched earlier this year by LeaderBrand, kumara (championed by Kaipara Kumara) was a late entry in the race. However it managed to pip beetroot to the post, securing more than 80% of the vote in an online petition. “It’s great that kumara came out on top, I knew it would win,” says Anthony Blundell, managing director of Kaipara Kumara. “Our New Zealand-grown kumara stand was extremely popular at the recent Food Show and we had a heck of a lot of fun throughout the day.” To discern which vegetable would taste the fruits of victory, LeaderBrand launched a six-week, online campaign, culminating in The Food Show, Auckland. And, the good news is, the company will now submit kumara to the Government for consideration as our official national vegetable. Bevan Roach, LeaderBrand’s marketing manager, says he expected kumara to prove popular. “We knew there would be a lot of support for kumara, however both beetroot and kumara are quintessentially Kiwi, neither would be out of place as our national vegetable. “Beetroot was [also] hugely popular at The Food Show, so Kiwis definitely still have a taste for it,”

KUMARA SOUP WITH THAI FLAVOURS Thanks to Kaipara Kumara, here’s a sweet little recipe featuring a warming blend of flavours and ideally prepared using orange or gold kumara. Serves 6

ingredienTs: • 750g orange or gold kumara, peeled and chopped • 1 tbsp oil • 2 tbsp red curry spice paste • 3 cups fish, beef or chicken stock or water • 1 cup coconut cream • Sprigs fresh coriander or parsley • Finely diced red pepper (capsicum)

MeThod: Heat the oil in a large saucepan, add curry paste and fry for one minute. Add kumara and stock or water, then bring to the boil and simmer until kumara is soft. Add coconut cream and cook for further 10 minutes. Blend mixture in a food processor until smooth, adding water if it is too thick. Serve topped with coriander and red pepper and enjoy. WOOP makes a meal of it When preparing dinner there is a need for speed, but frozen TV dinners need not be all that appears on the mid-week menu, as JON RAWLINSON explains. Last month, with the cupboards near bare shortly before that big, supermarket shop, partner and I were looking down the barrel at a dinner of fish finger sandwiches – such is life. And then it arrived... a nondescript refrigerated box labelled simply: ‘WOOP!’ While the parcel may have been small, it contained quite the bounty from duck legs, Angus steak and salmon, to fresh kale and spinach. And yet a problem remained: how could a pair of borderline workaholics, after a lengthy commute, set about creating gastronomic delights, even with all ingredients supplied? Fortunately, flavours can favour the brave, because WOOP (World On Our Plate) featured detailed menus and prepared portions, such as sauces and vinaigrettes. So what could possibly go wrong? Well, actually not much! Meals provided were: • Confit duck with caramelised apple, green beans and braised red cabbage • Cherry vinegar-glazed smoked salmon, creamy leek and potato mash, with a side of kale • Angus Steak with horseradish sauce, roasted winter vegetables, and cream and nutmeg spinach Come night one and we were already off script, mixing and matching

various elements of the dishes; well, you can lead a culinary philistine to fine dining, but he won’t always follow the menu. However, sharing bits of this and that, we enjoyed every mouthful. All in all, dishes were truly tasty, particularly the duck, with little prep needed. In fact, this lack of effort required is really my only criticism. Attuned to prepping while I cook, I was at a loss being left – after popping food into either the microwave or oven – simply waiting to be plating; still, I’m sure I could learn to assign those few minutes to something! While these recipes (due to

techniques or more obscure ingredients) would usually fall into the ‘don’t bother cooking this at home’ category, thanks to items being pre-prepared, WOOP allows for restaurant-quality meals in minutes.

Rules as they struggled through preparing gourmet dishes. Partner and I wondered what all the fuss was about considering cooking up such creations with Woop’s help was so very easy for us!

Better off red Red is far from dead! That’s the message from ANZ, following the bank’s research into the red meat industry. The annual ANZ Privately Owned Business Barometer survey found, while top performing farmers were achieving excellent returns on investment, many are receiving more modest returns and experiencing comparatively flat growth. Improving efficiency will be crucial in reaping the benefits of “incredible opportunities” which are now available, says Graham Turley, the bank’s managing director commercial & agri. “The red meat industry is at a tipping point. The challenge now is to narrow the range of performance across the industry. “High performers have confidence in the future of the industry and they back their ability to make a difference to the productivity of their business. “The industry is part way into a real success story; the challenge remains how to get greater uptake and follow through on the initiatives to take it the rest of the way.” In all, 275 red meat businesses of varying size, location and structure were surveyed by ANZ.

Ingredients • 200gm Whittakers white chocolate • 250ml cup condensed milk • 2/3 cup flour • 7 tbsp butter, chopped • 1 egg • Icing sugar for dusting • 5 scoops vanilla ice cream • 200gm frozen strawberries • 60gm sugar • 125gm small, diced mango (tinned or frozen if fresh not available) • 100gm tinned mango puree • 30gm white chocolate shavings for garnish

For the mango confit Mix together diced mango and mango puree and hold at room temperature. For the chocolate fondant Melt the white chocolate in the microwave. Add the chopped butter and microwave it for 10 seconds. When the butter is completely melted, mix well and set mixture aside to cool down.

Method

Beat the egg with an electric mixer and mix in the condensed milk. Add the white chocolate and butter mixture and mix. Sift in the flour and mix well.

For the berry coulis Defrost strawberries and place in pan with sugar over low heat till sugar dissolves and berries are soft. Remove from heat, let it cool and

Grease the moulds and coat them with a little flour. Pour in the batter, making sure to leave 1cm from the top. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 180°C (fan forced) for 18 minutes.

Remove from the oven and wait for five minutes before gently unmolding the puddings. Dust with some icing sugar and serve immediately with diced mango confit, berry coulis and vanilla ice cream. Chef’s note: Chocolate fondant should be baked and served immediately to ensure molten liquid flows effectively. The fondant mix can be pre-prepared in advance and baked when required.

Eighty years on, the World champs have again found their Cup runneth over with kindness as Anchor milk refreshes its partnership with the All Blacks. “In the mid-30s Anchor partnered with the formidable All Blacks and, in doing so, showed what being New Zealand-made was all about: goodness, growth, strength and greatness,” says Clare Morgan from Fonterra. “New Zealand was built on the hard work and broad shoulders of its farmers. They tamed the land, and made it productive. True grit and determination have always been the making of our dairy industry and our other world famous exports such as the All Blacks.”

She adds the DNA of dairy farmers and their communities have made a huge contribution to All Blacks success, on and off the field. “While Fonterra farmers have provided the milk that’s fuelled many generations of All Blacks,

their farms have also been the training ground for a good number of greats including George Nepia, Sid Going and Colin ‘Pinetree’ Meads,“ she says. “The work ethic and hands-on attitude of dairy farmers lends itself to performing well at.” www.eastlife.co.nz

sow good! Success may start at breakfast, but what does it take to six-seed? According to Venerdi, it’s a slice (or more) of Sourdough Six Seed bread (or toast), and after a recent taste test, EastLife is inclined to agree! Okay, so maybe it won’t necessarily ensure we achieve, but because it offers natural energy and nutrition, while being organic, glutenfree, dairy-free, low in sugar and low in fat, it certainly give us a healthy head start to the day. Venerdi Organic Sourdough Six Seed is available (RRP $7.99 per 600g loaf) from selected supermarkets and specialty food stores.

can-do aTTiTude Fans may pray for a blackout (of sorts) come October’s Rugby World Cup final, but it’s likely it’ll be all ‘white’ on the night if they follow the recipe of the Originals. To commemorate the All Black Originals’ highly successful tour of the UK, 110 years ago, Steinlager has announced the triumphant return of its limited edition white can, as savoured in 1987 and rereleased in 2011. If cans and Cups go together, let’s hope this is a Stein of things to come!

My Favourite Thing Art of glass

100 year old pianola tunes into laughs

If you can’t spot the difference, maybe you need new... glasses! Designed to hold up to four wine glasses, Bosch’s new GlassSecure Tray ensures stemware will receive optimal cleaning in the dishwasher.

This month EastLife asked Chris Bull from The Lounge in Howick to tell us about her Favourite Thing. Coming from an interior design background we expected the reply to be a decor item so when she said, “our pianola”, we thought it worth a drumroll. Here Chris tells us why the pianola is so special

What’s more, as they’re kept secure, there’s no need to handwash again. So it’s simply a case of bing, bang, (Bosch) and wash!

Like a lot of people I have several items which are really precious to me but right now my NEW favourite thing is our pianola which is set up at The Lounge, in Wellington Street, where it fits the decor perfectly. But it’s not its look, its age, or its sound that ultimately endears me to this novel instrument; I love it because it makes me laugh. Every time I work the pedals and its belts out a tune, I get the giggles.

EziBuy has just launched its fresh and gorgeous spring collection of homewares. Each piece is beautifully designed and bang on trend for this season, without the heavy price-tag. Whether you love bursts of colour or mono patterns, you won’t be disappointed! Check it out at www.ezibuy.co.nz.

But at the moment I am struggling to get a turn as Tony has taken to playing it any chance he can. And that is what makes it so amusing and, of course, the music is hardly modern day pop! But let me tell you a story first of all. Some years ago Tony [Chris’ husband] and I bought a VW, then we bought another one thinking we’d have a ‘his’ and ‘hers’ which was silly because we nearly always went everywhere together.

framestoday@gmail.com

Chris Bull with her pianola.

Well, every time we went out in those cars it was a load of fun. They made us laugh. The pianola is the same. It’s a source of constant amusement and cheers us no end. How we ended up with it is another story, again. It started when a lovely gentleman, Malcolm Ludsby gave us nine pianola rolls – the hole-punched rolls are turned by a pneumatic system to make the music but we had no pianola! We decided we had to buy one so looked on Trade Me and found five for sale – 4 in the South Island and one in the north and amazingly, that

open mon-fri 9-5 sat 10-2

one was in Highland Park! We couldn’t believe it. Then, when we went to see it, we discovered it had originally been owned by people in Cockle Bay and had virtually come full circle. Manufactured in 1913 it was in great condition, a little stiff, but once the dust was blown away it worked almost perfectly. Anyway, to cut a long story short, it is now at home in The Lounge where staff and guests all love to have a whirl – you just can’t help but love something that makes you laugh.

EziBuy hits home

Everyone at The Lounge loves it; it’s fun and I am inspired to go back for some refresher piano lessons so I can play it properly as well as working the pedals so that it plays automatically.

Clock watching HANDS ON COMPANY: Time may be on our side, but its march doesn’t need to be monotonous, thanks to a little Swiss style. For centuries, Switzerland has produced some of the world’s finest clocks, and since 1839, L’Epée has continued this tradition. While classic, sophisticated elegance is present

throughout its range – particularly demonstrated by the La Tour and Duel Black Pearl lines – the Starfleet range shows this company also keeps ticking into the future. Di blossoms in Queenstown Look who’s docked at Queenstown’s newest shopping centre, The Landing – it’s former Whitford resident and local business owner, Di Bowbyes, who has taken her gorgeous array of faux flowers south. Di, who started Everlasting Daisies in Bishop’s Gate, Botany South, way back in 2006, moved to Queenstown at the end of last year. Now shoppers there are enjoying the wow factor of hundreds of stunning blooms which never wither and die. They are also benefiting from Di’s creative floristry and her commitment to offering a selection of gifts that are just a little different from the norm. Of course, here in the Howick Ward locals enjoyed the benefits of Everlasting Daisies for many years, in particular Christmas products of the likes seldom found elsewhere. Former local, Di Bowbyes inside her new Everlasting Daisies store.

And, although Everlasting Daisies

may be lost to Bishop’s Gate, the chance to order from Di is still there – either online when her new website is up and running or personally when visiting Queenstown. Once again visitors will find she has a shop where stunning flowers almost defy description. Di says she when the opportunity arose to open at The Landing “it was a no brainer!” “I was lured by the fantastic location and great parking, which brings in plenty of foot traffic, as well as compatibility with surrounding businesses. After moving down here with a container full of stock, it has all worked out perfectly.” Located in Frankton close to Queenstown airport and Remarkables Park retail centre, The Landing opened in December last year and has attracted a diverse and exciting retail composition.

Spring trumpets arrival of pretty weigela With spring officially here, one somewhat old fashioned, but very pretty shrub, is sure to be in the pink soon, or perhaps the crimson, the white or the cream! Weigela makes a lovely addition to any garden.

Weigela florida is not so readily seen about town these days having, seemingly, fallen out of favour, perhaps because when flowering is over it can be, depending on the variety, a little nondescript. But it is an easy shrub to grow being frost hardy and not too fussy about soil type. If placed in a mixed border it will be a star while it flowers. What’s more, with smaller properties the norm today, this plant when well pruned, is a beauty – a healthy plant will give an illusion of leafy fullness without the worry of it growing too big. Pruning weigelas when flowering is over, usually late spring – although flowering may go on a little longer – helps keep them well formed and looking healthy. All shoots that have borne flowers should be cut out quite ruthlessly before the tips start to make new lanky growth that will flower the following year. Early trimming will also prevent inadvertently pruning off next year’s flowers. Any shoots left on the ugly husks of old flowers can ruin the overall look of the bush during the following year and in time growth will become floppy and sparse. Pruning encourages vigorous shoots to grow lower down in the bush. Mature plants should also

have some older wood removed from ground level each year so that the whole shrub undergoes a constant process of renewal. If seeking to rejuvenate, don’t trim more than one-third of the branches out from the bush. If the weigela bush is made up of more than onethird of these older, thicker branches, then remove only one-third of the shrub and plan on repeating the process next year. Named after 19th-century German botanist, Professor C F Weigel, the plant should be pronounced ‘vygella’ (with a hard ‘g’) but most people pronounce it as, ‘wygeela’. Originally found in North China, Korea and Manchuria by Robert Fortune it is believed they were first imported to England in about 1845. Following the opening of Japan to Westerners,

several weigela species (sometimes referred to as weigelia) were ‘discovered’ by European planthunters in the 1850s and 1860s, though they may have already been known to locals. Brought to Europe from the light woodlands of Eastern Asia, these deciduous shrubs/trees are admired for their showy little, trumpet-shaped flowers that are generally carried in groups of three or four on short shoots on branches produced by the plant during the previous year. Perhaps the most common and most popular is the delicate pink W. Florida variegata although there are many other varieties with colours ranging from soft pink to deep rosy purple, crimson, white and cream. Most reach about 5ft, although some can grow taller and wider, making them more appropriate

for large gardens. Pruning, of course, will control their size and hand pruning usually gives a better result than using large hedge trimmers. W. Florida variegata is also favoured for the clean variegation of its leaves which unlike some weigela give it another dimension when not in flower. Although it can be found in nurseries, weigela can also be grown from cuttings so if someone has a bush you admire then see if they are willing to part with a suitable cutting. Hardwood cuttings of naked shoots are best taken in winter, or semihardwood shoots in high summer. Feed with a little rose fertiliser and also mulch to give new plantings a good start and to boost flagging trees. Weigelas are not fussy about soil pH, are happy in sun or light dappled shade, and are not particularly prone to pest attacks. While they can be a stand-alone shrub in the garden they look best among other flowering shrubs in and can look especially eye-catching in an old-fashioned, mixed border.

I am often asked, “What is the secret of your success?”

The very best tenants come in all shapes and sizes and from all walks of life. You cannot gauge who will suit without meeting the individuals and spending face-to-face time with them.

Well, like all business there are a lot of ingredients that should be present to ensure this, including hard work, diligence, industry knowledge, meeting customer needs, good communication and more. The list goes on and on but I believe the reason we stand out is that we are a small, owner-operated business in which we know are clients and look after their specific needs. Having a close-knit team, which works hard every day, ensures we deliver the service clients expect. The most important thing for our clients is a well-run tenancy. For the owners, this means the best returns and the property being well cared for. For the tenants, a safe, secure and wellmaintained home to live in. The only way to make sure that everyone is happy is by selecting the right tenants for the right property. I always say that if we have the right people, we can deal with any event that comes along and, believe me, when you do this job for long enough, you see it all.

By meeting prospective tenants, and talking things through, we can decide if they are who they say they are. Median rise CONTINUES ‘ Total Focus Principal, GREG ROY AREINZ, gives an update on the local real estate market happenings.

Figures released from REINZ for July again show an upward movement in the median sale price for our area – Eastern Beaches – to $940,000, a new record and a 1.9% increase from June and a 25.3% increase from July 2014.

All these figures are for our area whereas taking Auckland as a whole the July median at $735,000 was an increase of 21% from a year ago but a slight decrease from June’s $755,000. Across the country the median moved to $465,00, up 11.8% from the $416,000 of July 2014. There were 8121 unconditional residential sales in July, a 37.8% increase on July last year and an increase of 9.4% from June.

The number of sales at 193 was slightly up on June’s 186, and for the second month running, giving us an average price of just over the $1 million. So, with the median at $940,000 this represents a dramatic 33.3% increase over two years from the July 2013 median of $705,000. Looking back a bit further to the lowest dip of the last cycle – September 2008 – when the median was $475,000, we have more or less doubled the median in just under seven years.

One of the price increase driving factors is the shortage of housing stock in Auckland and a recently released report from Westpac has identified that an estimated 10,800 dwellings a year could be built by Auckland’s construction industry over the next eight years without a serious risk of oversupply. This is 30 per cent more than the current level of construction.

Looking back a bit further to the lowest dip of the last cycle – September 2008 – when the median was $475,000, we have more or less doubled the median in just under seven years.”

So, whereabouts on the cycle are we? Will the current levels of increase remain, and if so for how much longer? Will the market have a correction downwards and if so how much? I am reminded of a story I heard some years back about a medieval king who, tired of living through feast or famine times, assembled his wise men and set them a task of finding a statement that would get him through life. The wise men, after much deliberation, came back with these four words – “This too shall pass.”

OPTING FOR A NEW LIFESTYLE Lifestyle blocks in the Auckland region are still in big demand with the area recording the largest increase in sales – up by 218 – in the three months to July 2015 compared to July 2014. What’s more, the median price for lifestyle properties in Auckland rose by $50,000 (+5.6%) from $897,500 for the three months to July 2014 to $947,500 for the three months to July 2015. REINZ rural spokesman, Brian Peacocke says the lifestyle market continues to maintain very strong momentum, with the figures for the three month period ending July 2015 showing a substantial increase on the same period 12 months ago. “The total volume for the period is at a record level although sales for the month of July 2015 indicate a slight easing from June 2015. “The national median price is just $5,000 below the high reached in May 2015.”

Share offers Olde Fartitus to the public lives! Part 1 Wynyard Wood consultant, RICHARD OSBORNE, whose specialties include commercial law and intellectual property law, writes on issues concerning the business community

The Securities Act 1978 (SA), which regulated offers of shares to the public, has now been overtaken by the Financial Market Conduct Act 2013 (FMC) administered by the Financial Markets Authority (FMA). As its name suggests, the FMC regulates the way in which shares are offered for purchase by third parties by way of documentary disclosure to the offeree. There are some exceptions to those rules. They include employee share schemes. The underlying principle is whether the offeree knows, should know or can find out about the offer. Illustrating that point, one exception to the FMC rules is when the offer is made under the company’s constitution or pursuant to a shareholder’s agreement. Another exception to the FMC rules is for particular offerees. For example, are they institutional investors or eligible persons? Those offerees are considered able to make their own decisions without FMC protection. This is because of their investment history and current asset base. The point to note is that for any general offer, offerees could be

exempt and non-exempt, so a precise analysis is required in each case. In contrast, another exception to the FMC rules is defined in terms of the type of offer itself not the status of the offerees. An example is the so-called small offer where the price is below $2 million. The exemptions are not absolute. They require cut-down disclosures or warnings and notices to the FMA. Sometimes they ban advertising. Generally, they cannot be misleading or deceptive. Overall, while the exceptions are designed to avoid the major difficulties in defining a public offer under the SA, they are not easy to navigate and some of the exceptions are difficult to apply in practice. So take care and advice.

As kids, we used ‘nong nong’ to mildly describe an idiot! In Australia they just use ‘nong’ once. But we are more articulate. We are! An ‘old fart’ is apparently... ‘an elderly person, who holds views that are considered, old-fashioned’. Wot? The term ‘old fart’ is usually attributed to an elderly man. Did you know that farts are gender-specific? Well, that surprised me too, team. I wonder how one can tell... Now, where wuz I? Oh yes. To be even meaner, folks add ‘silly’ to it, to become... ‘Silly Old Fart’ [SOF] Still better than being a LOL, right? Many moons back, as a busy Maverick, I decided to investigate this apparent ‘condition’. The best ‘alternate’ thinkers always approach things, like this cliché, from a different perspective. I determined that the definition, ‘old fart’, had nothing to do with ‘age’, or... with the ‘other thing’. You know.

In fact, the youngest ‘old fart’ I ever met, was only 17 years of age. He was part of a small group of adult and youth Scout leaders, discussing future activities. I had been invited as a consultant to the meeting. An idea was presented. The chairperson asked for comment. One boy stood up. He said... ‘We can’t do that, because we have always done it this way.’ Immediately I experienced a ‘maverick moment’. It’s thrilling. It is. Penny wise?

go-to-guide to get ahead

time to teach children about money

Kill your Mortgage and Sort Your Retirement The go-to-guide for getting ahead By Hannah McQueen RRP: $29.95

Basic arithmetic may be child’s play to some but managing money is often a struggle even for adults. With Money Week 2015 running from August 31-September 6, HANNAH McQUEEN, founder of financial personal training company, enableMe, urges parents to introduce ‘money talk’ into everyday conversations with their children – and to start from an early age.

Too often people have a cavalier approach to spending with lack of money management skills making it all too easy to forget more important financial issues such as paying off the mortgage quickly and reducing debt.

Money management is one subject that you won’t typically find in the parenting books and yet being financially savvy is an essential life skill.

In her latest book, Hannah McQueen, founder and director of personal financial training company enableMe, shows readers how to get serious about their money with great tips on how to pay off the mortgage quickly.

This is particularly so in our current climate of credit, where it is easy for our young people to borrow rather than work and save for what they want – be it a phone or a car.

In this book Hannah provides the skills to create a surplus and save hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest payments. She helps kill mortgages with her clever advice on how to cut day-to-day costs so that extra money is available to put into mortgage payments. Use her triedand-tested budget plan and learn about compound interest so you can pay off your mortgage in much less time than the standard 25-30 years, while still having a life.

Money is an important issue that influences many aspects of life. It can cause stress, discomfort, insecurity and anxiety. It can hinder career paths, impact on decisionmaking and it can have a detrimental effect on relationships.

With options for creating wealth, whether through investing, buying property or owning a business, and help in sorting out future retirement by building up extra wealth, Kill Your Mortgage and Sort Your Retirement is a practical guide to changing financial habits for the better.

WIN! a copy Hannah McQueen has given EastLife three copies of her book to give away. To enter the draw complete the competition form at eastlife.co.nz. One entry per email address/person; entries close September 30, 2015.

We need to encourage our young people to have a healthy relationship with money. They need to feel confident about being able to manage their finances and this can be achieved if parents and other adults set a good example by passing on the concepts of saving and spending as well as explaining the basics of how money works and, importantly, the pitfalls of credit.” It is never too early to start and by playing ‘shops’ with toddlers and letting them ‘pay’ on shopping trips is a great way to introduce the topic. For older children:

• Explain why adults work and the concept of pay day. • Talk about how much money comes into the household and how much goes out (use percentages if you prefer not to reveal the actual figures). • Discuss the idea of budgeting – draw up a household budget • Talk about saving and borrowing –

and the interest paid on loans. • Use cash on shopping trips to make money more tangible. • Encourage your children to always check the price tag before buying anything. • Encourage them to ‘earn’ their own money – either with your help or, if they are old enough, via a weekend job.

SKILLS-ful effort bags bronze ‘

It wasn’t just the All Blacks winning BIG over the Aussies recently, Bo and Pip from All About Promo, have scooped yet another award at the recent Australasian Promotional Products Association (APPA) Awards, held in Sydney.

The Skills Organisation wanted to encourage their staff, clients and suppliers to sow the seeds of remembrance, so we developed stylised, branded pots and poppy seeds to help them achieve this.”

Determined to help their client, The Skills Organisation, demonstrate its commitment to ANZAC commemorations, All About Promotions’ mother and daughter team, Pip and Bo Burns, thought well and truly beyond the obvious staple items and went with something innovative and memorable: ‘Grow your own Poppy Pot.’ “The Skills Organisation wanted to encourage their staff, clients and suppliers to sow the seeds of remembrance, so we developed stylised, branded pots and poppy seeds to help them achieve this,” says Bo. “The pots were delivered to desks on April 23 – at a very special time to remember and share stories. The feedback they received was extremely positive.” Judges at the annual awards said it was: “A thoughtful, internal campaign that had a much greater impact than was originally intended. A simple idea – well executed – with gratifying emotional connection between recipients.” They awarded All About Promotions a bronze for Promotional Excellence in the Business to Business programme. “We are thrilled with the judges’ decision and to be recognised on such an important international level,” says Bo. Katherine Hall from The Skills

Promotions’ pair, Bo and Pip, clinch bronze at APPA awards. Right, All About Promo’s award-winning ‘poppy pots’. Organisation is also impressed, both with results of the marketing campaign and All About Promotions’ recent recognition. “We may all want to be superheroes, but Bo, Pip and team come really close! There’s a reason why All About Promotions wins Australasian awards regularly, they are extremely good at what they do!” she says. No strangers to success, All About Promotions has won four other APPA and local awards in recent years. As a result, the company’s award shelf is looking very full, with more space needed (no doubt) for future awards.

Bo and Pip are passionate about their association, (APPA), which they say focuses on promoting integrity, professionalism and creativity amongst its members, with good business practices and high standards. “We’re proud to be part of a group which really is committed to ensuring our clients benefit from the very best this industry can offer,” says Bo. “Promotional products are tangible marketing tools and easily align with digital and online marketing. Marketers spend more than $144 million (NZ) each year on promotional products for one reason... they work!”

Bo, Pip and team are available to discuss potentially award winning promotional ideas at their East Tamaki showroom. “Simply give us a call (09 273 2666) to confirm a time to visit. Right ‘Hon’ Key Whether we see Key as captain of our country, or merely the taxpayer’s number one employee, there’s no question that John’s job keeps him very busy indeed. And last month was no exception, as these little ditties recount.

Good job, John Not content to be a ministerial tourist, Right Hon John does (much to his credit) get his hands dirty with a high profile portfolio of his own, Tourism. And business is booming, according to his recent announcement. “We have more people coming to New Zealand than ever, spending more and staying longer, helping boost our economy and creating more jobs and opportunities for New Zealanders,” he said. In the year ending July 2015, 3,002,982 people visited our shores, seven percent more than last year. And they proved rich pickings, leaving a total of $8.7 billion in their wake, up 28 percent, Key confirmed. “This is a huge milestone for an industry that continues to excel and is a testament to that hard work and the fantastic New Zealand experience offers. Tourism is our second-largest export earner and the industry continues to go from strength to strength. I have every confidence that... the best times for the industry remain ahead.”

Heir here – Key, countries and martial advances Despite our PM being present for Singapore’s 50th anniversary of independence, and his coming referenda, it seems Mr Key’s allegiance to Mother England and our Crown Prince, Charles, is in no way flagging. In August, John was amongst dignitaries invited to anniversary celebrations of Singapore’s secession from the British Empire 50 years ago. He said: “New Zealand is honoured to be one of a small number of countries invited to celebrate this historic occasion... and to reflect on an important partnership that has been characterised by resilience, and innovation. “Singapore is also an important economic partner, importing over NZ$1 billion of New Zealand goods www.eastlife.co.nz

PM, John Key (Minister of Tourism), in Queens-town. in the past year. It is a major source of investment and serves as a regional hub for many New Zealand companies.” On the other hand, come November, when HRH, Prince Charles visits his South Sea dominions, John will extend a right royal welcome, bestowing the honorary titles of: Admiral of the Fleet of the Royal New Zealand Navy, Field Marshal, New Zealand Army, and Marshal of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. Of course, Key had to be granted permission by the Queen before drafting her boy into our military. “These appointments recognise the consistent and strong support Prince Charles has maintained for the New Zealand Defence Force,” said Key. “The Prince [has] demonstrated a deep empathy and understanding for the contribution and sacrifice of our Defence Force personnel in conflicts and peace-keeping operations around the world.” Again, considering Key’s great flag debate, when Charles is given his marching orders one must wonder as to which colours our new commander will troupe.

PM: “hands off” on homes? Rather than helping Kiwis open doors to home ownership, the Greens believe Key is locking them out. Recently, Green Party Co-leader, Metiria Turei, said the Government’s efforts to address Auckland’s housing shortage are insufficient.

“John Key’s hand’s-off approach to fixing the housing crisis is failing Aucklanders. Prices are already out of reach of everyday Kiwis and... the problem’s only going to get worse. The National Party [is] determined to leave Auckland’s future in the hands of the market... clearly the market is working against Aucklanders – and so is this ‘do-nothing’ Government!” Thankfully, despite her fire and brimstone comments, Ms Turei is keen to offer Key advice. “The Government could be undertaking a large-scale homebuilding programme in Auckland, using its access to low-risk, lowinterest finance. A full capital gains tax and a ban on non-resident foreign investors would [also] be good steps to dampening speculation and protecting first-home buyers.” While John didn’t provide a direct response to Ms Turei’s comments to EastLife, a spokesperson for the PM was quite at home with outlining National’s efforts to date: “Tackling supply is a priority and the Government is working to free up more land faster through our Housing Accords and Special Housing Areas. We’ve also introduced initiatives to constrain building materials costs, rein in development contributions and cut compliance costs. “Latest building and consent figures from Statistics NZ show that residential building in Auckland is the strongest it’s been in a decade... The Government is committed to helping more New Zealanders into their own homes.”

All we can say is, if Government and Ms Turei aren’t committed already, then maybe they should be!

Key ‘Cooks’ up thoughtful gift Donating buildings (or funds for their development, at least) may be an old school political move, but it’s a classic for a good reason, ultimately voters tend to prefer schools and hospitals for some strange reason! So, it’s encouraging that John Key is set to gift the Cook Islands up to $11.7m towards rebuilding its national secondary school, Tereora College. “Schools are both a cornerstone of the community and places of learning which help prepare our young people for the future,” he said. “It is these students who will form the next generation of leaders and who will build on the relationship our countries have forged over the past 100 years.” Key’s gift marks celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Cook Islands’ selfgovernance in free association with New Zealand. “This unprecedented arrangement was established in 1965, and since then our two countries have worked together to forge a unique relationship that is stronger today than ever... New Zealand wants to mark the occasion with an enduring gift to Cook Islanders.” Mr Key visited the islands in early August and played host to the Cooks’ Prime Minister, Henry Puna, later in the month. eastlife | september 2015 |

Through foot and fin – a Gold is a rare commodity. However, as JON RAWLINSON recently discovered, going for gold is quite the common occurrence for two rising sports stars. While one goes in boots and all, the other sticks it out beneath the surface, yet former Howick College students and step siblings, Evie Millynn and Louis Flavell-Birch, have one very important goal in common – to perform for New Zealand on the international stage.

Time on her side When the final whistle blew on the Football Ferns’ final pool match recently, every ‘Peg’ was not a winner; the scoreboard in Winnipeg, Canada read: China 2 – New Zealand 2. A good result in some ways considering the Football Ferns have never won a FIFA World Cup game, but not good enough to progress in the tournament. Looking on, Evie Millynn was frustrated with the result, especially considering a dubious hand ball call went against her team. But, back at her parents’ home in Cockle Bay, Evie contends that, in pro’ sport, sometimes that’s just the way the ball bounces. “I was disappointed because we had high expectations to go through to the second round. We felt a bit hard done by with some decisions, but you can’t control those things so there’s no point getting too upset about them,” the 20-year-old midfielder says. “We are a really good team, but we needed to be more clinical and simply score more goals. It is annoying because I think we played some really good football; we just couldn’t get the results we were after.” Although Evie wasn’t required on the field this time, she is already a veteran of three age-grade World Cups and has a promising career ahead.

evie millynn the Football Ferns. It was a really huge event with far more media and, obviously, all the best players in the world. For me, it was about gaining experience and, hopefully, next time – when I’m more experienced and older – I’ll have more opportunities.

reached the quarter finals] there was quite an increase in funding so we were able to go on more tours, which was a huge help. There’s not heaps of money that goes to the players – it’s okay as a student, but if you had a mortgage it’d be tough!”

While the last result may always weigh on players’ minds, it’s always the next that’s most important. And, with the Olympics looming, the Football Ferns will soon have another chance to take on the world.

However, lucrative overseas contracts could see her ply her trade offshore in future.

Hopeful of selection for Rio, Evie’s well aware that there is much work to be done in order to make the grade.

“It was a little [frustrating watching from the sidelines], but I was still part of the team and pushing the others along, which does help.

Although New Zealand Football may not be cash rich, she says it is a professional organisation which offers players reasonable support.

“This was my first World Cup with

“I would like to head overseas eventually – quite a lot of the girls do – but I’m focused on my studies [health science at AUT] and I’d like to get into physiotherapy. After I finish my degree I will probably look at it, though.” Evie hasn’t ruled out a return to the USA (winners of this year’s World Cup) where she attended San Diego State on an athletic scholarship, mid 2013- mid 2014.

“[In the USA] they have the money, facilities and such a great following. The support is way beyond anything I’ve seen in women’s football,” she says. “I came back to New Zealand because I wanted to get my foot in the door with the Football Ferns ahead of the World Cup. I don’t think I would have made the team if I stayed over there.” Wherever her goals lead, Evie seems determined to give life her best shot; and even thoughts that this talented Fern is ‘gonna be a Gunner’ should not be dismissed! “There are lots of possibilities, although nothing’s certain,” she says. “I haven’t really thought which club I’d most like to play for, but if I could choose any team, then maybe an English side... maybe even Arsenal!”, she laughs. www.eastlife.co.nz

Top of the world – under the water While his step sister, Evie, may be aiming for a spot in the Football Ferns’ Olympic squad, Louis Flavell-Birch has recently enjoyed a successful run at underwater hockey’s World Age Group Championship in Spain where his Under-23 team claimed bronze. “I was quite emotional [about not winning gold], but now that I look back and reflect, I think we played a really good, hard style of hockey. We were all there to play our best, and that’s what we did,” he says. This is not Louis’s first medalling affair; the Under-23 Men won gold at the CMAS Underwater Hockey World Championship in Hungary, 2013, which also included Elite and Masters teams. “There was a lot of pressure to win again, and we’d lost some key players [now aged over 23]. We were expecting it’d be harder this time but were still confident. Obviously www.eastlife.co.nz

I’m disappointed that we couldn’t retain our world title, but it was still awesome to stand on that podium, and to represent our country.” Louis’s team defeated Columbia 5-4 in the bronze playoff, while Turkey claimed gold against Australia. Other results were: gold for the U19 men, silver for U19 women and a fifth placing for the U23 women. “I am really happy for the U19 men because it had been nine years since they had won a championship after winning silver at the last three or four. They definitely deserved their gold,” Louis adds. In general, New Zealand teams have performed well at world championship events across the grades, including four golds and two silvers in Hungary. A member of Pakuranga Underwater Hockey Club, Louis says the sport

is on the up and up, with locals, in particular, taking to it like ducks to water. “In New Zealand’s main cities, underwater hockey is popular, obviously not on a level with some other sports, but it’s growing every year with more schools and clubs competing,” he says. Now 20, and working towards a degree in performing arts at AUT, Louis first tested the waters at Howick College (aged 13), following the fins of his older sister and Auckland rep’, Alice. The school has produced a number of internationals during more than 25 years involvement in the sport. The recent championship saw Howick College progenies Hamish Arthur (U23 Men), Annabelle Fletcher Jones, Emma Bavelaar, and Farrah and Vanessa Brill Holland (U19 Women) on the team sheets. Others with local connections were Joanna Chamberlin from Clevedon (U23 Women), and ex

Pakuranga College student, John Cole (U23 Men’s coach). However, underwater hockey remains an amateur affair. Louis says he envies step-sister Evie to a degree (when it comes to funding), but the versatile sportsman has no regrets about pursuing his laurels elsewhere. “Underwater Hockey New Zealand does put money towards each team but it’s nowhere near on a level with football. Most of the team work and we [largely] pay our own way. We do some fundraising too,” he says. “I played football [Fencibles United] when I was younger and sometimes think if I stayed with it, I could have been on a similar path [as Evie]. But I really love my sport. It has unique challenges – because it’s a three dimensional sport you have to be aware of things going on above and below as well – and the adrenalin buzz is amazing!” eastlife | september 2015 |

NZTA: I owe you While the New Zealand Transport Agency may be quick to hold out its hand for registration fees, how quick is it to offer a refund? JON RAWLINSON ‘cheques’ this out. How much could one expect to pay for a vehicle which had (most likely) been crushed into a cube for almost 12 months? Well, the answer could be up to a full year’s registration; that is if New Zealand Transport Agency criteria are not followed. In January, one of our vehicles gave up the ghost and considering its age, it was time to put the old girl out to pasture. With its registration set to lapse, I thought I’d just wait it out then call in a wrecker to collect its carcass. However, I soon learnt (from a rather obtuse customer ‘service’ representative at NZTA) that the wheels of bureaucracy wouldn’t turn that smoothly.

would still be liable for registration fees, even on a vehicle set to be turned into a hunk of crushed metal. An NZTA spokesperson later confirmed this: “When a vehicle is left unlicensed for a period of more than 12 months the registration will lapse, and any outstanding licence fees will remain payable. “Continuous Vehicle Licensing requires a vehicle remain licensed at all times unless placed on exemption or the vehicle’s registration is cancelled.” So, instead, my partner (registered owner) had to stand in line, hand over the plates, fill out a form (these

I was told that, unless procedure was followed, I

are not available online) and pay $10 for the privilege. Ah the joys of going by the book!

However, I wondered whether this was an expensive way to send a sum of, wait for it… $6.14!

I asked if we would be refunded the balance left on the registration, knowing this would only be a small amount, and was told NZTA would ‘decide’ whether or not we would be refunded. Hang on! Since when can a government agency simply choose not to refund money it owes?

NZTA did call shortly beforehand offering to pay this princely sum directly into my bank account, but as I was not the registered owner of the vehicle, I declined this invitation.

It turns out, since always! While NZTA was quick to accept the $10 ‘processing fee’ and suggest we’d receive a cheque, months on, no cheque arrived. To shine a light on a shady place, I began being annoying and lo and behold, approximately four months after my initial call, we received a cheque by courier with handwritten address and signature required… talk about service!

Perhaps (as I had emailed from my work address and mentioned this little tale may be told in print) NZTA pulled out stops usually stalled for the average punter. I requested clarification: “The Transport Agency does not generally process refunds for unused vehicle licensing fees of less than $10, as the administrative costs involved are greater than the refund value.” So, why was I issued a refund when others ‘generally’ would not be? I put this to spokesperson but did not receive a reply. Apparently, it was worth their time and money to send me my $6.14, but not to confirm why I received such special treatment. I guess this sets precedence though and I am, after all, richer with knowledge for the experience.

Intelligent lightweight construction with a higher proportion of aluminium helps make the Coupé lighter than its predecessor.

Coupe with a capital C Mercedes-Benz is adding a Coupé to its C-Class family. Athletic and sporty, the vivid, new Coupé cuts a fine figure on the road and embodies modern luxury. At the same time, its interior raises elegance and style to a sporty level. A dynamically configured chassis, with optional air suspension, forms the basis for a high level of suspension comfort, low road roar and tyre vibration, agile handling, and driving pleasure. Lightweight construction to reduce

weight, excellent aerodynamics and high performance yet efficient engines likewise contribute to this. To underscore the Coupé’s sporty nature, the suspension is 15 millimetres lower than that of the Saloon, making it a very athletic proposition when combined with the standard 17-inch tyres. With an 80 millimetre longer wheelbase than its predecessor, the C-Class Coupé is also 95 millimetres longer and 40 millimetres wider. The increased vehicle volume above

all creates more spaciousness for the driver and front passenger. There is more shoulder room, elbow room and headroom in all seats.

The two diesel models are equipped with an enhanced four-cylinder unit developing 125 kW (170 hp) or 150 kW (204 hp).

Powerful and efficient four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines with ECO start/stop function provide for sporty performance and driving pleasure. They consume up to 27 percent less fuel compared to the outgoing model.

Light-alloy components include the wings, bonnet and boot lid.

There are initially four petrol engines available, from a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine in the C 180 with 115 kW/156 hp to the two-litre C 300 with an output of 180 kW/245 hp.

At the same time, the body is now much stiffer and stronger thanks to the use of high-strength materials, which has a positive effect on not only driving dynamics and noise levels but also crash safety. Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe goes on local sale mid-2016.

Traditional meets modern Mazda’s fourth-generation MX-5 promises to be a real show stopper when it launches in New Zealand this month. Twenty-six years on from the launch of the iconic roadster, the design team has struck a balance between traditional and modern and created a perfectly proportioned, lightweight sports car. The new car remains true to the MX-5’s rich history but the design has been evolved, and pushed, to create a vehicle that not only looks incredible but will be an absolute thrill to drive. The interior of the all new MX-5 www.eastlife.co.nz

matches the exterior for look and quality, further enhancing the driver’s total experience. A snug yet comfortable cockpit puts the driver at the heart of the action. A new seat and steering wheel design work in harmony with a new shifter layout to provide greater comfort and less fatigue while dialing up the special connection between car and driver.

New MX-5 has an aluminium bonnet, boot lid, front fenders, and soft top parts to reduce weight.

A new soft top design and onestep operation allows for easy use whatever the weather.

The GSX-grade launched this month features a six-speed manual and a SKYACTIV-G 1.5-litre petrol powertrain.
