Woman bashed at home By THERESE HENKIN
A
woman has been assaulted in her Dannemora home after she walked in on a burglar. The victim, who wishes only to be known as Mrs K, arrived home early last week to find an intruder rummaging through her belongings in her home on Chapel Road. The mother and wife suffered bruising and a concussion after being punched in the head by the intruder when he turned on her as
she was yelling for help. “I don’t feel safe in my own home after this,” she says. “It was terrifying. At first I thought I saw him holding a gun and when he came towards me I thought, ‘he’s going to shoot me’.” She says she arrived home to find the internal access door between her garage and lounge wide open, despite having closed the door before she left the house that morning. “I knew something was wrong
before I even saw the man running from my lounge to the kitchen,” she says. Mrs K says she started calling for help, knowing the intruder had seen her. “Suddenly he came towards me, pushed me into the car and punched me in my face three times. I just blanked out and collapsed.” She called the police no more than five minutes after the assault which took place around 1pm on Monday October 30, she says.
Mrs K says the intruder was a middle-aged man of mixed European and Maori or Pacific decent, dark hair and was wearing a tidy white t-shirt and shorts. Mrs K says he was driving a silver Volkswagen hatchback. Police responded to the incident and say the matter is currently under investigation by the Tactical Crime Unit. Mrs K is urging residents to be careful and be on the lookout for suspicious activity in the area.

t 81, Howick lawn bowler Vern Patterson is a winner despite suffering a severe stroke in 2000 that put him in hospital for three months and on rehabilitation for a year. Last Friday the popular Vern’s happy grin grew wider when he and secondyear rookie Warren Williams were the C Green winners of the Howick Bowling Club’s Howick and Pakuranga Times sponsored 2x4x2 pairs. He has come a long way since achieving his ambition of walking unaided out of hospital 17 years ago and having a hot drink in his left
paralysed hand “without scalding myself.” Vern admits bowls success has not come as easily as the raffle prizes he once regularly won when taking his favourite numbers, 1 and 99, after the day’s play had ended. But win or lose, the grin remains for a happy chappy whose attitude has endeared him to fellow bowlers since neighbour Martin Smith brought him along to the Howick club’s Have a Go mate day in 2001. ■ Friday’s winners: 1st Warren Williams and Vern Patterson; 2nd Helen Ongley and Alison Irvine; 3rd Diane Klomp and Danny Belsham.

No buses here, thanks By Therese Henkin
T
he new bus network in east Auckland isn’t being celebrated by everyone. Some Union Road residents are facing two bus stops being established directly outside their properties come December 10, and they’re not happy about it. The new bus stops are proposed outside 30 and 41 Union Road in Howick as part of the new bus network being rolled out across Auckland. “The biggest issue with these bus stops is that they aren’t safe,” says Anthony Brobbel, whose house will directly be impacted by the proposed bus stops. Brobbel says if the bus stops go ahead, they will be situated where there is currently ‘no parking’ lines and will force motorists to cross the road’s yellow centre line to overtake buses which have pulled over. He says adding bus stops to a road that already has issues with people speeding, and experiences significant traffic back-log during peak times is a dangerous move. “Using Google maps to measure the distance from kerb to kerb, this appears to be the narrowest point of the road,” he says. “And with several buses stopped along this stretch of road, vehicles are crossing the solid yellow centre line to pass; it’s an inevitable acci-
dent waiting to happen.” Brobbel also worries that when buses are stopped, motorists will have no visibility when pulling out of the Union Road shops and neighbouring driveways. Despite his prompt and detailed objection letter, Brobbel says he waited weeks for a response before receiving a response that “danced around the safety concerns”. He says the letter also mistakenly referred to Dannemora Drive instead of Union Road. Brobbel says he was also shocked to see a bus using the proposed location as a bus stop before the consultation period had ended. “They are asking for these submissions under the illusion that we have a fair say and we have fair opportunity to object,” he says. Auckland Transport (AT) spokesperson James Ireland says bus drivers are not allowed to stop in the proposed bus stop location before a bus stop infrastructure is established and this matter will be taken up with the bus company. “We are definitely taking the consultation process seriously. We don’t want people to be unhappy with the new bus network,” he says. Ireland says all decisions relating to the location of new bus stops is reviewed by qualified and experienced road

safety experts before ratification. “A statutory committee established in every local government jurisdiction responsible for making sure that only safe and legally compliant modifications are made in the road corridor.” “We admit that a driver could be hemmed in by the yellow centre line and would have to wait until bus moved again, this could result in a minor delay for the driver. As a transport agency we need to balance this minor inconvenience versus the wider benefits of the project,” he says. Ireland says bus stops also have different considerations to the considerations for ‘no
stopping’ lines. “Buses only stop for a short time a couple times in an hour. Buses do not sit in place like a parked car and all access is on the footpath side unlike in a car.” Brobbel says he is disappointed with AT’s response and feels they are dismissing the safety concerns. “You only have to listen to road safety campaigns to know that anything can happen in a few seconds. If AT and the police are actively advertising that, then telling me the buses will only be stopped for 20-30 seconds is not justification to proceed.” The new east Auckland Bus network will be rolled out on December 10, 2017.

Warning after motorcyclists’ deaths P
olice have issued a safety warning to motorists following the recent deaths of two motorcyclists in separate crashes. Senior Sergeant Stephen Richards, Area Prevention Manager, Counties Manukau East said police have been out in force last week emphasising the importance of making safe decisions on local roads. “Over the past two months four lives have been lost on roads in the Counties Manukau East area and we urge all motorists to be mindful of basic road safety rules to help ensure everyone is safe,” he said. “Two of the four people that lost their lives were riding motorcycles and police remind motorcy-
clists of their added vulnerability on our roads.” One motorcyclist died on Ti Rakau Drive on Wednesday, October 25, following a crash involving a bus. Another motorcyclist was killed a week before that, on October 18, in Stancombe Rd near the Fo Guang Shan Temple. Motorcycle riders are the highest-risk group on New Zealand roads, being 19 times more likely to be killed or injured than car drivers over the same distance travelled (NZ Household Travel Survey, 2009-2013 data). “To reduce crashes that involve motorcycles, we need motorists to be extra vigilant and make safe decisions on our roads. Motorists should always look
out for motorcycles and need to be extra cautious when turning right and when pulling out at intersections.” Extra care when making these manoeuvres could help prevent a crash involving a motorcycle. “Our focus is on engaging with motorcycle riders to raise their awareness around safety and remind them of their vulnerability,” he said. “All road users should respect each other and be aware that they each have responsibilities to uphold. Police urge motorcyclists to take extra care by following some basic safety rules: ■■ Have the appropriate licence and the correct size of motorcycle
for it. ■■ Ensure your motorcycle is registered, warranted and in safe working condition. ■■ Wear the right safety clothing and footwear. No bare skin or jandals! ■■ Wear an approved safety helmet. ■■ If you are riding a motorcycle that was manufactured on or after January 1, 1980, the headlight must be switched on at all times when on the road. ■■ Ensure you comply with any conditions of a graduated (learner or restricted) drivers’ licence. ■■ Visit the website www.rideforever.co.nz for tips and training on riding motorcycles safely and improve your skills.
Name released
Police have released the name of the person who died following a crash on Stancombe Road, Flat Bush on October 18. He was 27-year old Robert Peter Silva-Ewins from Flat Bush. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Silva-Ewins,” a police spokesman said. The Serious Crash Unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Just a week later, another motorcyclist was killed in the area following a fatal crash involving a bus on Ti Rakau Dr, last Wednesday afternoon. It claimed the life of 54-year-old Brett Howard Dodson.
Countdown to Santa parade The Howick Santa Parade is just little over three weeks away and elves are working busily putting the final touches to the Christmas floats and costumes. The annual parade, which attracts thousands in what is one the largest Christmas parades in the country, will see the main street turned over to local clubs and groups for an afternoon of festive fun. Organiser Emma Smith of Times Newspapers said excitement is mounting as the big day draws near. “Float registrations are coming in thick and fast,” she said. “It’s gearing up to be another
wonderful parade. Registrations are now open and any local schools, groups or businesses can go to our website www. howicksantaparade.co.nz to download entry forms.” She is confident the parade will attract another strong showing of artistry and talent. “Last year we had more than 50 groups take part which was our biggest parade ever,” she said. “Let’s hope we can smash that record this year.” ■■ When: Sunday, December 3 ■■ At: Parade starts at 2.30pm ■■ Where: Picton Street, Howick

Rices Mall, Howick
Iconic clock overhaul Howickians who like a good chime will be pleased to know that the Rices Mall solar-powered clock on Picton Street has recently undergone a major overhaul, just like Big Ben in London. Well not quite – Big Ben will take four years to service and overhaul and the Howick clock not quite so long! Installed in 1990 by Russ Rice, this quality Seiko clock was probably then the only one of its kind in New Zealand. With a choice of two chimes, West Minister (currently playing) and Ave Marie, the chimes can be heard four times each day at 8am, midday, 4pm and 8pm to the delight of the shoppers, retailers and visitors to the Village. Electronics fix-it man, Jeff Quedley of Whitford states that the clock is still in good condition and shows the quality of Seiko manufacturing of the day. He was pleased to service Howick’s iconic clock so that Howickians and others can continue to enjoy a good chime.
Des, left, and Larry have been a focal part of the Howick community for more than three decades.
Duo hanging up their aprons! After more than 30 years serving Howick Village and the wider community, Howick Village Butchery as we have known it is shutting up shop. Not only do Des and Larry serve up delicious tasty meats
(including Howick’s worldwide famous gourmet sausages), you will also have freely thrown in a dose of good old Kiwi humour! Their generosity in supporting Howick groups
must also be noted. Sorry Boys I (we) know you didn’t want a fuss but Howick will miss your friendly waves and smiles when passing by your window each week and I am sure hundreds of others
will also. You have done Howick proud. Thank you! Oh, and I have heard we will still be retaining our Butchers shop for your convenience. Watch this space!!! Hugs, Janine (Times Newspapers)

Principal: media got this wrong A
local school principal is “disappointed” with a national news story published online suggesting the school allegedly told students they couldn’t sit their NCEA exams if voluntary school fees weren’t paid. Botany Downs Secondary School told the Times a Stuff news story’s headline was incorrect as the issue in the spotlight is subject fees and not voluntary school donations at all. The news site reported that a mother was fuming after her daughter arrived home saying she wouldn’t be sitting her NCEA exams unless her school donations were paid. However school principal Karen Brinsden said the misunderstanding has arisen because the school had not effectively communicated when the NZQA admission slips would be available. “The theme of school donation was never raised by any party, parent and or journalist. It was disappointing the story title chosen by the (stuff.co.nz) journalist as it was misleading to the pub-
lic,” she said. At the end of each of the senior awards ceremonies, she explained those students who had completed their clearance process (i.e. outstanding library books, sports uniform and or subject fees) were issued with their NZQA examination admission slip and were able to go on study leave. “While we had communicated to both parents and students over the preceding weeks the clearance process and informed them of outstanding items, we had inadvertently omitted to communicate that NZQA admission slips would be issued at a set date and time,” Brinsden said. “Students who had yet to complete the process were asked to return over the coming days to do so. We have never withheld an admission slip.” Students are able to download them from the NZQA website and have them authorised by the Principal’s Nominee at school. “We sent a communication out to all parents on Friday morning and apologised for any misunderstanding this may have caused,” Brinsden said.
“I would like to thank parents for the positive way they engage with the school and for their ongoing support of the college. “ Meanwhile NZQA’s deputy chief executive assessment division Kristine Kilkelly confirmed to the <ITALICS>Times it had spoken to the college about this issue. “The school regretted any confusion their administrative processes have caused and confirmed all students would be receiving their admission slips,” she said. Students can also access their learner login on the NZQA website to print their admission slip for NCEA examinations. NZQA has advised the school to review the way it communicates on these issues in future. “All students registered in NCEA are able to sit their exams and we are concerned when we hear a school may be preventing entry to examinations until charges, fees or voluntary donations are paid,” Kilkelly said. “We remind all schools that they should not attempt to collect money for any reason by preventing access to examinations.”

who are part of the young Z Club,” says Gay Gallagher an active member of Zonta East Auckland that recently celebrated its 30th Anniversary. “It’s not only about saying no to violence but Zontains have also been proactive to initiate change,” she says. Gay cites the Loves Me Not campaign that Zonta supported for the last three-and-a-half years in secondary schools. The Loves Me Not initiative explores healthy relationships and the sensitive subject of relationship abuse and consent. Following the death of Sophie Elliot at the hands of a former boyfriend that shocked the nation, it became clear that she had been in a typically abusive relationship. Sadly neither
Sophie nor her mother had been able to read the tell-tale signs. The Loves Me Not campaign aims at lowering the levels of domestic violence through education. “It’s about recognising healthy and unhealthy relationships. The campaign targeted at Year 12 students enabled young adults to be in a safe and positive relationship.” Empowering women through service and advocacy, Zonta works towards promoting justice and universal respect for human rights as it works towards law changes to prevent female genital mutilation, human trafficking and violence against women that includes psychological, physical and sexual violence.

At a time when the world is horrified with high profile women sharing their survival stories of sexual harassment, abuse and assault, Zonta East Auckland is working towards the Orange Splash Day to be held on November 25. The ongoing advocacy campaign sends a strong message to raise awareness against unacceptable levels of violence against women and girls around the world. Members of Zonta East Auckland, a part of an international women’s organisation dedicated to changing lives, will be handing out around 3000 orange ribbons to individuals and businesses in the Howick area. The orange ribbons signify that leading a dignified life free of violence is not just a women’s issue but a societal one. The #METOO campaign that has gone viral on social media with hashtags being used in 12 millions posts in the first 24 hours is proof of the magnitude of the problem — rampant not only amongst economically disadvantaged girls but also women of substance and celebrities who finally decided to come out with the shameful secret. The ongoing advocacy campaign Zonta Says No that kick-started in November 2012, continues with the anti-violence initiative in local communities. “We intend to splash Howick township with ribbons and a display the rotunda and Howick Library. There will also be Police officers supporting us, as well as students from Macleans College

Cookie time for charity By THERESE HENKIN
T
he Cookie Time Christmas cookie sellers hit the streets this week and Eastern Beach resident Sarah Accorsi is with them, cookie buckets in tow. The first time cookie seller says she is thrilled to be getting out in the community for a good cause. “The best part is bringing a little bit of Christmas magic to people and organisations,” she says. Accorsi will spend the next seven weeks visiting businesses and locals in the east Tamaki area to raise money for charity through cookie sales. Accorsi says she is most excited to raise awareness for Cookie Time’s hero charity, The Blind Foundation of New Zea-

land. “I didn’t know much about the Blind Foundation to start with,” Sarah says.
“They aren’t a big charity, and not many people know how to support them so it’s great to be able to bring a little bit of
awareness to the foundation.” This year $200,000 of the money raised will go towards charities supported by the Cookie Time Charitable Trust and a further $50,000 will go the Blind Foundation of New Zealand. Accorsi says not only is she excited to learn valuable skills on how to run her own business, she is thrilled to be part of raising funds for those who need it. “There are people out there facing challenges we may not even realise or know anything about and if we have the ability to help out, big or small, we should,” she says. “There are so many aspects of the Christmas cookies campaign that motivate us all to hit the streets and sell as many buckets as we can.”

What can I do for you? The Howick and Pakuranga Times has kindly offered me the MP for Pakuranga opportunity to write a regular column in their paper, alternating with my friend and colleague in Botany, Jami-Lee Ross, and I wanted to use my first one as an opportunity to thank the people of Pakuranga for electing me as their new Member of Parliament. It is a great honour and privilege to have been elected to represent you, and one of my biggest priorities as the new MP is to ensure that the people who live here and that I represent in Parliament know who I am and how to reach me. Since the election, I’ve been very busy getting my feet under the desk and stuck into the role and my new responsibilities. My primary obligation is to my constituents, and to ensure that you receive assistance with a range of issues when you’re having difficulty resolving it on your own. This can be about almost anything, from an immigration matter, to a WINZ problem, to trouble with ACC, or even just to raise your concerns with a local or national issue. One of the jobs I’ve been focused on in my first couple of weeks is getting my new office open, and on making sure you can find me. You may have already noticed that I’ve taken over the Pakuranga Electorate Office from my predecessor, Maurice Williamson, which is located at 120 Pakuranga Road, and our mailing address is PO Box 51-258, Pakuranga 2140. The office phone number will also remain the same, (09) 572 0000, or if email is your preferred method of communication, you can get in touch at pakurangamp@parliament.govt.nz. I encourage you to get in touch anytime, as I am here to serve you and help with whatever I can. Going forward, I’ll be holding regular constituent meetings on Monday mornings where you can make an appointment to meet with me face-to-face. I’m looking forward to the next three years as your MP, and will be looking to engage with our community as often as I can to make sure you and your family are represented on the issues that matter to you. A Sunnyhills School teacher has received a prestigious award for excellence in teaching. Kim Madden recently received a Jim Campbell award for Excellence in Teaching for her role as a specialist maths teacher. She received the award from Gillian Frankcom, president of the NZ Association for Mathematic Teachers. Mrs Madden’s role includes upskilling the teaching of mathematics through the whole school and working with students to increase their learning in mathematics. The award citation says Mrs Madden has had an “amazing impact” on students in the ‘below standard’ mathematics category, with 89 per cent of students at and above the standard and the subject now the strongest curriculum area of Sunnyhills School.

Clarks Beach take win The final round of the Covic Shield and Plate championship was played at Pakuranga Golf Club at the end of October. Sixty five players fronted this most difficult of Covic - Counties-Manukau Veterans Inter Club - club courses. Whilst Wattle Downs were the winners of the round with a massive 160 points, Clarks Beach were solid with 154 and their second place was good
enough to become the Covic Shield Champions for 2017. In the Covic Plate Championship, it was no surprise that home team Pakuranga won the round with 159-points, and Kevin Gibb returned the best round of the day with a personal score of 46-stableford points and won the Covic Claret Jacket as the most deserving player of the day. Pakuranga finished fourth overall.

The online videos shot by Sami reflects their personal relationships as they bond with families of different nationalities as well as personal sentiments of people wanting a peaceful existence as they live with conflict. “There were so many small initiatives by Israeli and Palestinian groups that work towards a peaceful co-existence,” says Eloi. “I was also very impressed with the way Sri Lanka and its people have coped after a 30-year civil war,” adds Bénédicte. “It’s just been nine years since the civil war is over but the people are so kind and friendly and helpful.” For Sami it was the people of Lebanon that struck a chord. The short video tells a moving tale. After a seven month InterFaith tour co-founded by Coexister, Sparknews and supported by Kaiciid (a knowledge hub interested in interfaith mapping), the team returns to France in February for a month to process all that they have learnt. Following that they travel throughout France to share the InterFaith initiatives they’ve gathered on the tour with schools and educational institutes helping to shape young minds to combat existing attitudes and strive towards a peaceful coexistence. ■■ Follow their journey on www. interfaithtour.com ■■ Facebook: InterFaith Tour ■■ Twitter: @iftour

hey are on an epic InterFaith Tour spanning 20 countries and five continents. I met four French students at Jamaliyeh’s and Stephen Drake’s home in Flat Bush as they partook in the inter faith celebration to celebrate 200 years of the birth of the founder of the Baha’i faith. They even offered to shoot pictures with their professional camera that we published last week. Interestingly, the group of four that is mature beyond their years comprises students with different beliefs— Bettina Borgel, a 22-year-old of Jewish faith; Bénédicte Charrier, a 22-yearold atheist; Eloi Deschamps, a 22-year-old Catholic and Sami Trouchaud, a 21-year-old Muslim. In the last four months they have travelled to Finland, Estonia, Albania, Lebanon, Cypress, Israel, Palestine, Tanzania, Madagascar and Sri Lanka before arriving in New Zealand. With a pit stop of around 10 days in each country, the idea behind the InterFaith Tour is to address questions of identity and interfaith initiatives as they get an exciting global perspective on cultural and religious diversity. Hungry for information that builds mutual understanding across cultures, they get involved in an array of activities
in different countries and have interfaith dialogues on finding new ways of enabling social cohesion. “We’ve met people from a multitude of cultural organisations, religious leaders, youth groups, members of the City Council and municipality and education institutes,” says Eloi who takes on the role of a programmer as he plans the group’s stay with host families and travel itinerary. “We go into private spaces by living with host families all over the world and conduct interviews on the interfaith backgrounds of each country.” In Auckland the group stayed with Jocelyn and George Armstrong. Jocelyn is the chairperson, of Religious Diversity Centre that has former Prime Minister Helen Clark as its patron. The enterprising team of four who are documenting their journey on camera and on social media now head for Peru, Costa Rica, Gautemala, Cuba, Mexico followed by Canada, the US, Iceland and Ireland. “We produce different types of videos about what we’ve learnt,” says Bettina. “It could be the daily life in that county or the promotion of different interfaith initiatives.” Talking about people and places that touched their hearts, Bénédicte and Eloi say it was Israel and Palestine.

I complained to Auckland Transport about the fact that part of the road from Cheriton Road to Paisley Road had been re-made a fortnight ago. Fulton Hogan had remade the road beautifully two weeks ago but yesterday (Thursday, November 2) and the day before had now ripped up the kerb stones, damaged the brand new road and destroyed quite a bit of the new seal. However after two phone calls to Auckland Transport, one of which was put down while I was speaking, I finally spoke to the two people who eventually admitted to being in charge of the project. One was busy eating lunch at 1100 and was too engrossed to stop eating while we discussed the project and their apparent disgraceful performance and

destruction of the brand new road. Between mouthfuls of food, clattering of knives and forks, he attempted to tell me the story. I was amazed that if the kerb stones need replacing, that job would have been done first, before destroying the old road. He said that while laying the new road some incompetent driver of a scraper had damaged the kerb while laying the road, hence the need to do the kerb stones then repair the road. However the good news is that the repair/renewal of kerb stones is not to ratepayers account (apparently) but to Fulton Hogan the contractor (yeah right). Apparently there is another surface to be done to the road as you will notice a huge gap between the join of Paisley Road and Mellons Bay Road. I was assured that the finished road would be perfect.

I wish to commend Jami-Lee Ross on his recent temperate and restrained article on the result of the recent General Election. (Howick and Pakuranga Times, November 2) As National’s MP for Botany, Jami-Lee might have been forgiven for a smidgen of invective or even a tear or two over his party’s exclusion from government by Winston Peters’ decision to run with Labour and the Greens, but no, he refrained from such unproductive complaints . Whatever one thinks of Winston’s decision, there is no good reason to cavil over the way MMP handed him the decisive vote on which parties were to form the new government. It is admirable that Jami-Lee encourages Jacinda as the new PM and wishes her well. He rightly notes, that despite a political disappointment, this is not the end of the world, and that the sun will continue to rise on New Zealand and its green, green grass. Let us also hope that all our MPs perform as professionals for the good of the country in the three years of a new government that lie ahead.

Why are we using Aussies?
It seems such a shame we need to contract out to an Australian company to maintain our green areas and dead head our flowers, albeit with hopefully New Zealanders. Not doing such a good job if one looks around at the ‘paddocks’ growing where once there was regularly mown grass. If cost-cutting is the excuse, how about city council salaries?

Open Letter to Micheal Xiong, Auckland Transport Re: Proposed New Bus Stop 141 Clovelly Road Dear Mr. Xiong, Once again Auckland Council fails the ratepayers of this city badly. In spite of us lodging an objection on the grounds of safety issues and your assurances that we would be kept in the loop and provided with feedback regarding the 141 Clovelly Road bus stop, what has happened? Nothing, not a single word has come from you and this morning (Tuesday, October 31) the Fulton Hogan contractors arrived and marked out the bus stop footprint. This is just another prime example of the left hand having no idea what the right hand is doing.

Metal bins wrong
If plastic takes a thousand years to break down in the sea, who was the sorry engineer and designer who was no doubt paid a lifetime’s salary to produce the metal rubbish bins all the way along our eastern beaches? After three years, because of salt spray, they are no longer operable and in another three will mostly be rusted hulks creating the mother of all eyesores for our visitors to guffaw about. It’s not rocket science to realise plastic would have been a better option and, while I’m at it, who is the Australian contractor contracted to mow our reserves? Like the litter bin designer, he must be laughing all the way to the bank.

Can the Labour coalition last? (Times, October 25). Auckland Transport is running flash new buses. Why didn’t it buy hybrid power plants? They are emission-free when stationary and starting off. With carbon dioxide over 400ppm, we’ve already locked in 5 metres of sea level rise. The only question is when - how fast will Antarctica break up? Yet Auckland Airport is spending billions to expand on low-lying land. It is nigh impossible to reduce emissions from our farms without reducing stock, so we must reduce emissions from transport. What have we done? Increase them dramatically. The answer is not more roads. Half our emissions come from farming. Farmers lived in denial and National bought carbon credits. Time to face reality. Bill English is a fair and decent man. He deserves a knighthood. But National deserves to be in opposition. It ignored the science and gave no leadership. It wasted another nine years. Mankind faces an existential threat. If National wants to help the country it will help the government because we’re all in the same boat. And it may not float.

Colour and culture comes to Howick The ninth annual Russian Christian School Fundraiser, organised by the Salvation Army, Howick, was once again a great success. The Auckland-wide Russian community brought the Village Rotunda to life with a variety of Russian music - fast toe-tapping gypsy music on the violin, gentle strumming of the harp and fiery guitar playing to name a few. Singers and dancers wore Russian ethnic costumes, adding vibrant colour and culture to the scene. Many bystanders joined the Russian dancers and it was delightful to see young
children jigging about in time to the music. Special thanks go to the Salvation Army Store, Rices
Mall and its tenants, and Howick Village shoppers and retailers for their support of this worthy cause.

f you’re a parent feeling like you’ve been doing a slightly less than stellar job as of late, you can usually take comfort in the fact that it could always be worse. You might have been a bit impatient, you might have dropped the ball on a few occasions and you might
feel like you’ll never figure out parenting but chances are you haven’t abandoned your four-year-old daughter in order to become a guard at the infamous Auschwitz death camp. Such is the story of Helga Schneider, a German woman whose mother did just that and whose experience Let Me Go is loosely based on. Let Me Go follows Helga (Juliet Stevenson) as she deals with the longstanding effects of her mother’s abandonment of 1941. Set in the year 2000, the film
also details the effects of this abandonment on Helga’s daughter, Beth (Jodhi May) and granddaughter, Emily (Lucy Boynton), who up until this point had remained blissfully unaware of the life history of their (great) grandmother Traudi (Karin Bertling), who they believe to be dead. When Helga receives a letter telling her that Traudi is close to death, Helga shares the truth with Emily who then volunteers to accompany her to Vienna to meet her dying great-grand-
mother. While the film itself struggled to capture and hold my attention, I was drawn in by some strong acting performances - of Juliet Stevenson and Karin Bertling in particular. The reluctance of Stevenson’s character to acknowledge her mother as that and Bertling’s character’s eventual desperation for her daughter to do so showed the emotional scars of Traudi’s desertion, even nearly 60 years on, and not just on Helga, but her daughter and granddaughter too.

The announcement by Phil Twyford that KiwiBuild houses won’t be means tested is an expensive middle-class bribe, according to the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union. Joe Ascroft, economic advisor at the Taxpayers’ Union said: “The aim of KiwiBuild is to provide ‘affordable housing’ but as long as you haven’t owned a home before, you will be eligible, irrespective of your income.” “Young doctors and lawyers will be thrilled to start their property portfolios with a large subsidy from taxpayers, but it’s not particularly efficient social spending. The Minister should reconsider his proposal, and income test KiwiBuild applicants so resources go to those who most need it.”

Amazing Granite Benchtop adds wow factor A large titanium gold honed granite bench is the piece de resistance in a very dramatic kitchen designed by Jag Kitchens for Gaye and Nigel Powell of Mission Bay. The beautiful eye-catching bench at the heart of this contemporary kitchen has spectacular veining and a large waterfall end. The new kitchen includes cabinetry in Arctic Grey with accents of Carbon and has black recessed handles. It has a bold bronze light fitting (with an embossed white interior on the shade) centered over the sink. The space is enhanced by the rich colour of the existing wooden floors. The Powells moved into the seven-year-old home just over a year ago and have set about putting their stamp on the property with a collection of stylish furniture (antique and modern blended beautifully), colourful art pieces and quality oriental rugs. The Powells’ first major change has been to update the kitchen and adjoining laundry. “The original kitchen was all very white and had no personality, while the laundry didn’t suit us

the way it had been designed,” Gaye explains. On discovering that that Jag Kitchens also work on laundry renovations, she collaborated closely with Jag designer, Megan Dyer, to make a workable plan for both the areas. A piece of the same stunning granite used in the kitchen was used in the laundry as well. The cabinetry is the same Arctic Grey as the kitchen, but with some white accents to create a lighter look. “Before the laundry was a space dominated by dark cupboards, it now feels lighter and is so much easier to use. I also have a favourite feature – a hanging rail to hang shirts on,” Gaye adds. She believes these two
renovated rooms are not only more functional than they previously were— but also flow better and fit in more with the character of their vibrant home. “In the kitchen, we have the benchtop extended right into the windowsill area – making the benchtop deeper and more streamlined. This was a slightly tricky job with the granite, but works well. It’s great to work at the bench and enjoy a nice view into the garden at the same time.”

“The whole project went very well, Megan worked very hard at it and the result is absolutely perfect,” she adds. And designer, Megan, is also delighted with the outcome and enjoyed working with the Powells on the project. In the new kitchen, all modern appliances have been used. The fridge is a double door icemaker and the oven tower includes a double oven with a built-in microwave.
The rangehood is a super quiet model with a remote mounted motor and there is an induction cooktop. The kitchen also has spaces for separate wine and beer fridges on the outer side of the peninsula bar. Jag Kitchens specialise in custom-designed kitchens and have their own manufacturing plant. The staff also use a stateof-the-art 3D computer design programme to show clients beforehand exactly how their new kitchen will look.

Market unfazed by political change Despite the number of homes on the Auckland residential property market increasing to their highest number in more than five years in October, the average and median selling prices for the month remained firmly fixed. The average selling price for October at $910,537 was down 0.9 per cent on the average price for the previous three months while the median price at $830,000 was the same as the average median price for the previous three months. “The Auckland housing market has been unfazed by the political change that has occurred,” said Peter Thompson, managing director of Barfoot & Thompson. “There was definitely downward pressure on prices, and this can be seen in the small variations in October’s prices when compared with the average and median prices for September, and October last year. “However, when looked at within the bigger picture of the last three months, the market has not changed with prices remaining stable. “There has been no panic selling, any hopes of post election price increases have evaporated, the new Government has done no more than confirm its pre-election commitments and buyers are still being cautious making
purchase decisions. “The biggest market change post election is that new listings at 1733 for October have lifted substantially, and was the highest since May. “Sales numbers during the month remained subdued, and at 634 were at their lowest since February, and were the lowest in an October for seven years. The longer than normal time lag between election night and the formation of the new Government contributed to sales numbers remaining low during the month. “The combination of high listings and low sales saw the number of listings at month end reaching 4451, the highest it has been for more than 5 years. “The market is now well set for an active run in to year end. “Clarity is returning, and we have now entered what is traditionally the strongest sales period of the year.” During October , 60 properties, or 9.7 per cent of all properties, sold for under $500,000 while 225, or a third, sold for under $750,000. “This was a similar number (211) to those that sold for more than $1 million. “Rural and lifestyle sales activity to the north and south of Auckland mirrored what occurred within the city limits. Buyer interest was strong but cautious, and new listings increased.”

Ten years on, the total numbers of homes listed has slumped to 24,307 (October 2017). “The property market historically follows a cyclic trend, and this past decade has seen a steady increase in asking prices while the total stock for sale continues to fall,” said realestate.co.nz spokesperson, Vanessa Taylor. “This is inspiring many Kiwis to think outside the square when it comes to letting go of the quarter acre dream, and recreating the notion of what makes a home,” she says. “In October 2007, we were months away from entering the period of the global financial crisis. New Zealand was hit, albeit relatively lightly, she said, but it was a period when lending was tight, house values dropped and new housing construction fell dramatically. “The GFC hangover meant it took years for the property market to recover,” said Taylor. “Recently, as more Kiwis started to return to New Zealand permanently, along with the number of migrants from other countries, New Zealand found itself behind the eight ball when it came to sufficient housing numbers.”
New property listings in October 2017 down 8.4 per cent
It’s only in the last three years that the fall in available property for sale has been quite so significant. In October 2014, total housing stock sat at 39,917, compared to 24,307 in October 2017, almost a 40 per cent fall. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that home ownership is out of reach. “There is more creative thinking coming into our housing vernacular, such as the Tiny House movement, co-housing with a central hub, as well as apartment and duplex options,” Taylor said. “The exciting thing is that as we move through to the next property cycle, we will have more options to suit our lifestyles, much like other large metropolitan cities across the world.”
Real-time statistics from realestate.co.nz show that new property listings were down 8.4 per cent in October compared with the same month in 2016, with 10,778 homes newly listed for sale across the country. “This is not a surprise. We have had a challenging winter and that dominated decisions, because people always want to show their homes in the best light. “When there’s rain, wind and cool temperatures, prospective buyers tend not to venture out as much” says Vanessa. “We also had an election with property as a significant focus, so it’s no surprise people would wait to see the outcomes.” Every region in the North Island experienced a fall in new listings, with the exception of the Hawkes Bay which was up by 3.6 per cent compared to October 2016. Auckland, which by its sheer size can impact the overall market nationally, experienced a 9.3 per cent fall in new listings. The 3,705 new listings were minimal in a market of this size. In the South Island, Nelson registered the highest number of new listings for October compared to the same month in 2016, with 235 new listings.

Key amongst them on the evidence of the Kiwis 74-6 thrashing of Scotland is born again Te Maire Martin and 21-year-old test newcomers Nelson Asofa-Solomona and Addin Fonua-Blake who have the potential to become Kiwi greats. Martin, 22, is the 87kg standoff half who was dumped by the Panthers as Nathan Cleary’s halves partner and relegated to the NSW Cup before being snapped up mid-year by the North Queensland Cowboys for a reported bargain $A50,000 ($55,370). Having replaced severely injured legend Jonathan Thurston to partner Michael Morgan, Martin learned a lot from both and played his part in the Cowboys fairy tale charge to the grand NRL final where they bowed out to the
Agnew’s Angle mighty Melbourne Storm. A beautifully balanced, deceptively illusive player, the cool-headed Martin capped a classy performance with three tries against the Scots, the same as right wing Peta Hiku. Repeating that performance against the fiery Tongans poses a far more severe test because the Pacific Islanders showed they too have the smarts to go with the power they demonstrated in their thrilling 32-18 triumph over brave Samoa compared with the Kiwis 38-8 win over the same side. Never have I seen a happier, flag-waving crowd create such a wonderful atmosphere at a New Zealand event of any kind as both teams provided an epic battle in Hamilton that celebrated the massive contribution Pacific Islanders have brought to sport.
A shame, therefore, that some fans should engage in fights off the field after their teams showed so much controlled fury and respect on it. While Cowboys star Jason Taumalolo had a strong game, Sio Siua Taukeaho was the outstanding performer in a powerful Tongan pack when he accumulated an incredible 250 metres. Having received few chances to demonstrate their worth in the halves for the NZ Warriors, it was pleasing to see how well Ata Hingano and Tui Lolohea adapted to test footy with the former particularly outstanding, With Fonua-Blake hitting the scales at the same 118kg as the late Jonah Lomu and Solomona 6kg heavier, the Kiwis also have muscle up front to meet the challenge, especially when one adds the pace and power of the 111kg Martin Taupau. Add the massive defensive contribution from Simon Mannering and it’s a strong pack which is spoilt for choice at hooker with Thomas Leuluai,
Danny Li and Elijah Taylor to choose from. With Roger Tuivasa-Sheck starring against Scotland and Martin and Dean Whare’s slick passing offering scoring opportunities for those outside them, the improved backline cohesion provides special satisfaction. If only the Warriors could follow suit. Meanwhile the All Blacks’ match against the Barbarians at Twickenham was supposed to provide a platform for the up and comers to show they were ready for test rugby. Instead it was two flankers, one a former All Black and the other a Johannesburg Lion who hasn’t won Springbok selection, who captured the spotlight. Steven Luatua, with two long runs from intercepts, had a rousing first half which no current All Black could match, while the speedy Kwagga Smith was the star of the second. Crashes aren’t accidents By FARIDA MASTER Shock, panic, distress, guilt and anger are just some of the emotions that people experience after a car crash. According to the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), there were 378 road fatalities in the 12 months to October 27. Weekly road deaths in Auckland totalled 53. The crash data is derived from traffic crash reports completed by police who attend fatal and injury crashes. Taking the students of Elim Christian College through the motions was the flagship Rotary Youth Drivers Awareness (RYDA) programme held recently at Pakuranga United Rugby Club. The programme is for 15-17-year-old students and was hosted by the Rotary Club of Somerville, in conjunction with Road Safety Education, a provider of road safety education for youth. The idea behind it was to educate young people about road safety as they approach a time in their lives when they start driving a car or are passengers in cars driven by one of their peers. “Peer pressure has a huge effect on young students. The programme addresses students as both drivers and

passengers on how to change the environment in the car rather than focussing solely on the driver,” says Dorothy Conor, RYDA’s programme coordinator. The two main messages are: ‘It’s my life and my choices so what actions could I take to keep me and my friends safe’ and ‘Crashes aren’t accidents’. Students are also briefed on distracted driving which is one of the most common causes of car crashes.
“Talking on a mobile phone is a common reason for distracted driving, which can lead to ‘inattentional’ blindness. If you are talking on your mobile phone while driving, you may be looking through the windshield and you think that you are focused on the road, but chances are that you can’t see everything that is going on in front of you even though it’s in your field of vision,” she says.

Statistics show that talking on a mobile phone (even hands free) draws nearly 40 per cent of mental resources away from the task of driving. “It leads to loss of vision because of inattentional blindness caused by lack of attention. It’s when an individual fails to perceive unexpected stimulus that is in plain sight,” she says. Police personnel also address fatigue, human error, the Graduated Licensing System and attitude. The Speed and Stopping session looks at how a vehicle carries half its speed into the last quarter of its stop. It also points out that when one doubles the speed, the braking distance is multiplied by four. The one-day intensive programme is broken into six modules including meeting a crash survivor who shares their personal story of the struggles they faced after their road crash. The road safety programme to tackle youth road toll had a profound impact on students and as president elect of Rotary Club of Somerville Lisa James puts it, “The programme is an absolute must for every 15-17-year-old. It’s a no brainer.”

‘It’s all down to dedication’ By KELLY TEED Andrew Barrett is dedicated to his sport. He wakes up at 3:45 every morning to go to the gym until 6am, before heading to work. All up, he estimates he spends about three hours per day training, seven days a week. His mealtimes work like clockwork and don’t change - ever. On Sunday, he prepares all of his meals for the week – usually a big task for the average person but an even bigger challenge for Andrew. When he spoke to the Times, he’d prepared 40 meals for the week. The hard work is paying off though – Andrew currently holds the 2016 Mr WFF NZ Sport Model title, the 2017 Auckland Title and the Pan Pacific title as well as recently receiving his Pro card. It’s a challenge – but that’s the best part about it, says Andrew. “There’s heaps I really like about it [and] one is that it’s extremely difficult to do – especially long term.” He points to the difference between most people who prepare to compete in one competition then return to normal and long-term competitors who constantly train in preparation for the next competition and says maintaining the strict nutrition is the hardest part of all of it and compares it to eating like a dog. “I know exactly what I’m having throughout the day because it’s the same thing as yesterday and the day before that - 365 days of the year it doesn’t change except for a two hour treat meal window each week. “I’ve been constantly dieting since January – and even then I probably still followed some kind of plan over the Christmas break as well.” This month, he heads to Singapore’s Kallang Theatre to compete among the world’s best at the World Fitness Fed Asia Pacific Pro/Am championships where he’s simply hoping to improve on his last effort. “I think it’s getting yourself to a point where you feel like you’re better than the last [competition] “As long as we get on stage and we look better than the last time, as long as you’re better than the last competition, you’ve won.”
Draw for prems The top of the table clash between Marie Raos Ray White and Parnell premier men’s side ended in a disappointing draw because the loss of the first day’s play made achieving a result virtually impossible. Parnell resumed from its overnight score of 20/1 and made a mandatory declaration after 52 overs at 225/5. Andrew Lane top scored with 94 and McGregor -Sumpter chimed in with 69. Danru Ferns 2/47, Adam Jones 2/46 and Bill Walsh 1/31 shared the wickets. The home side had 51 overs to score 226 and fell short at 188/8 when the end of play was called. After a steady start with Howick Pakuranga losing wickets at 39 and 87, fortunes swung to both teams at various times but a chasing team always needs to take a few risks and with four overs to go Howick put up the shutters with Ferns and Rudi Botadra batting through to stumps to ensure a comfortable draw. Andrew Morrison continued his run of golden form with 50 with Skipper Bill Walsh and new recruit Cameron Neal 27 all scored runs but nobody was able to go on and put together the big score needed to win the match. Life doesn’t get any easier for the Premiers next week when they meet top of the table University at Colin Maiden Park. ■ Matches this week: Marie Raos Premier Reserves vs Eden Roskill at Lloyd Elsmore Park; Howick New World Premier Women vs Waitakere University at Lloyd Elsmore Park

Greatness calls for Te Maire Martin Page 23
APC attracts another star name T
he Australian Production Cars will welcome Dannemora’s Andre Heimgartner to its ranks for its 2017 season finale at Wakefield Park across November 18 and 19. Heimgartner – who has impressed recently as a ‘super sub’ for Supercars team Brad Jones Racing at the Bathurst 1000 and Gold Coast 600 as well as for GT outfit Craft Bamboo Racing – will co-drive with Dunlop Super 2 Series star Nathan Morcom in the Team DPO Ford Focus RS. Morcom is currently one of four drivers in the hunt for the outright and Class A1 titles, alongside Bob Pearson and brothers Grant and Iain Sherrin. Earlier in the year, Morcom had the services of Supercars star Chaz Mostert as co-driver, however Mostert is otherwise committed for the November 18-19 weekend. “Andre is such a talent and we were very impressed with his Supercars efforts at Bathurst and the Gold Coast – super late callups didn’t stop him from putting in great performances and his race-leading efforts on the Gold Coast by up to 20 seconds on the rest of the field in particular certainly got our attention,” Team DPO team manager Scott Fulcher

said. “When we knew Chaz couldn’t make it to Wakefield, we knew we had to find someone who could jump in and do a great job. After his amazing ‘super sub’ appearances in October, Andre made total sense and we were very pleased when he agreed to come on board with us for the final round of the APC season.” Heimgartner, who is Melbourne-based, has just returned from New Zealand, where he followed up his maiden Supercars podium result of the Gold Coast with a drive in the BNT V8s at Pukekohe Raceway. “The amount of track time on offer in the Australian Production Cars is really impressive, we are talking hours and hours of racing
plus practice and qualifying time at every event on their calendar,” Heimgartner said. “Nathan and Chaz have done a really good job so far and while Chaz won’t be in contention for the title by virtue of missing Wakefield, Nathan will be and so I am determined to do the best job I can to help him bring it home. “Team DPO is a great outfit and I have heard good things about the Focus – I can’t wait to see what we can do around Wakefield Park later this month. ”The Australian Production Cars’ final round of 2017 will hit Wakefield Park Raceway on November 18 and 19. Two 300km races will be held, one on each day, with live streaming to cover all the action on both days.
