Will coalition last? N
ational party whip and Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross has raised questions as to whether a NZ First coalition with Labour and the Greens can last. “Already we have seen over the weekend the first disagreement where the Greens say they will legislate for the Kermadec Ocean Sanctuary, but NZ First says they will block it,” Ross told the Times. “NZ First and the Greens do not make natural bedfellows, but I suspect they will work to paper over any cracks that form. “I hope they do hold it together for the sake of the country. Dysfunctional Government doesn’t hurt politicians. It hurts the economy,
investment, growth, and opportunity.” Meanwhile Alan Papprill, Botany’s Labour Electorate Committee secretary, said that based on evidence from previous Labour-led coalitions, there is no reason to doubt that the NZ First leader will work constructively in the Ardern Labour-led Government. “The mature manner in which the negotiations were conducted have certainly ensured that there will be a close and cooperative working relationship between all the parties that will ensure that this is a government that will endure.” Speaking for the first time since NZ First leader Winston Peters’

come as a surprise to many. “But, I wish the incoming Labour/ Green/NZ First government good luck. Voters expect stability and growth from a government, and that will be their challenge.” Asked how much thought had been given by National to work with the Greens as coalition partners, Ross said he received a lot of public feedback suggesting the party should work with the Greens. “We tried. If the Green Party was truly an environment party, it would position itself to work with either Labour or National, and they would ultimately get more gains for the environment that way,” he said. ➤ Turn to Page 3

decision last Thursday to support a Labour Party-led Government, Ross was deflated that the National Party would not be in Government. “It is naturally disappointing for us as MPs, but more disappointing for New Zealanders and those that supported National at the recent election,” he said, “Prime Minister Bill English won the support of 45 per cent of New Zealanders. In our local area, six in 10 voters chose National. The election’s outcome was more of an MMP result, rather than an election result, Ross said. “Winston Peters has now chosen to support a Labour/Green coalition. That is his right, but it will have

owick Local Board is bringing the area’s history in to the 21st Century with the launch of the Howick’s Heritage mobile app. The interactive walking app allows users to discover the history of Picton Street and explore some of the nearby landmarks through a range of historic images, interactive maps and audio commentary. The app also features a digital panorama on Stockade Hill using augmented reality technology. “It’s an exciting development for us because it brings Howick’s rich history to life, opening it up to a whole new audience of both locals and visitors,” says Howick Local Board member its culture and heritage portfolio lead, Adele White. “In a world where people seem to live their lives through their phone or tablets, if we want to keep our heritage alive for future generations we need to move with the times so we hope people embrace it.” For those wanting more stories about the Howick area, with the app there is a link to download STQRY – another mobile device application that features more detailed history of the area across several topics. The project is one of several identified in the Howick Heritage Plan, adopted by the local board in 2016. “Already we’ve included the names

of four soldiers with Howick connections to the war memorial on Stockade Hill, historical images are etched on to the glass panels of the new Half Moon Bay ferry and over the next few months we hope to have interpretative signs and plaques installed at several sites,” says Ms White. In launching the app, the local board paid tribute to the work of respected Howick historian Alan La Roche who has provided the content and to project coordinator Humphrey Beeson. “It’s been a labour of love to get to this point and would never have gotten off the ground without their dedication and hard work,” says Ms White.

Writer, historian, illustrator, naturalist, sailor, cyclist and nonagenarian. There’s no shortage of words to choose from when it comes to describing Sheila Natusch. There is, however, an extremely well-made film about her extraordinary life. No Ordinary Sheila is aptly named. Directed by Hugh Macdonald, Sheila’s cousin and produced by author Christine Dann, the documentary explores the life of Natusch and the fiercely independent, talented and creative woman that she was. I’d wager it near impossible to watch this remarkably well-told story and not feel inspired to live life to its fullest. In her words: “I’m interested in living and getting the last bit of fun out of life there is” – and that she did.Born on Stewart Island in 1926, Sheila was never destined to have an ordinary life. The film follows her from early childhood, into her young adult years where she formed a friendship with renowned New Zealand author Janet Frame as they attempted an unsuccessful foray into teaching together and then further into later life.

Excerpts of interviews mixed in with archive footage and a fantastic soundtrack entwine together to create a beautiful masterpiece offering a glimpse into the making of Sheila. The final moments of the film were simply beautiful – so much in fact that I was nearly brought to tears. An emotional montage of Sheila’s life made all the more moving by a perfectly suited musical ensemble in the background. Sheila passed away in early August, just days after she saw the film of her life at the sold out Wellington premiere where it finished to rapturous applause. In Sheila’s words, the film was “just brilliant”. A brilliant film for a brilliant lady – it’s only right I suppose. In those final few moments of the film, Sheila’s sheer determination shines through during an interview with Radio New Zealand’s Kim Hill. “I’ve got cancer of the liver but I ignore it,” she says matter-of-factly. What about treatment? “There’s nothing they can do. I’ll just fade away in my own time…it’s nothing.” What an extraordinary attitude from someone who certainly was no ordinary Sheila.

Sheila’s story really is extraordinary
Food trucks will be coming to east Auckland. The Howick Local Board has recently approved an application for an ice cream van to operate out of Lloyd Elsmore Park, Barry Curtis Park, Cockle Bay Reserve and Macleans Park. Super Kool Ice Cream will now be able to serve ice cream cones to park-goers on warm summer afternoons for a trial period of three months. They will be operating between 12pm and 5pm on weekends and in the schools holidays. The contract
CP0816-V4
will be re-evaluated at the end of the trial period but Howick Local Board’s Garry Boles, lead of the parks portfolio, says he hopes the Super Kool Ice Cream truck will be the first of many. “The board agrees that allowing food and coffee trucks to operate out of our local parks could create a really good vibe in the community,” he says. “Imagine in summer having bands playing on a stage, with food trucks and stalls easily accessible. It would turn our parks into a hot spot for summer afternoons and the community will get good use out of it.”

Winston Watch comes to an exhausting end After nearly a month of watching and waiting in anticipation, New Zealand finally has a Government
W
inston Peters announced his decision on Thursday evening to form a coalition with the New Zealand Labour Party, making Jacinda Ardern the youngest Prime Minister of New Zealand in 150 years.
Here’s what we know so far: ■■ The Green Party will be in a Confidence and Supply role. ■■ Winston Peters will be Deputy Prime Minister and hold the Foreign Affairs portfolio.
Winston Peters

■■ The Green Party will hold the portfolios of conservation, climate change, women and land information as well as associate roles in finance, environment, transport and health. Green MP’s holding ministerial positions will be James Shaw, Jan Logie, Eugenie Sage and Julie-Anne Genter. ■■ Labour will have 16 ministers inside cabinet and five outside. Inside Cabinet will be: Jacinda Ardern, David Clark, Clare Curran, Kelvin Davis, Chris Hipkins, Iain Lees-Galloway, Andrew Little, Nanaia Mahuta, Stuart Nash,
Damien O’Connor, David Parker, Grant Robertson, Jenny Salesa, Carmel Sepuloni, Phil Twyford and Megan Woods. Outside Cabinet will be: Kris Faafoi, Peeni Henare, Willie Jackson, Aupito William Sio, Meka Whaitiri. ■■ NZ First is expected to hold portfolios in economic development and an associate education role for Tracey Martin. Ron Mark is expected to hold the defence portfolio. ■■ National has pledged to be the “strongest opposition ever”.
Will Labour, NZ First, Greens arrangement work? ➤➤From page 1 “National was very open to working with the Greens, however there was almost no interest from them.” And what did he think of Winston Peters and his decision? “It’s not so much what I think of him, it’s more a case of what his voters think of him,” said Ross. “We have always known that he can flip any which way. Whether his voters realised
they were signing up for a Labour/Green government, that has priorities like cannabis legalisation, is another story. “Whichever side of the Parliament I sit on, I am grateful for the support of 21,000 locals in Botany this year. This endorsement, with an increased vote, is hugely appreciated. I will continue working hard on their behalf.” ■■ Brown saddened by Winston’s decision
Simeon Brown, the newlyappointed MP for Pakuranga, said he is disappointed with last week’s announcement. “I’m saddened by the decision made (last week), which means that even after winning the largest share of the vote in the 2017 election, National is unable to form a government,” said Brown. “I truly believed that the best way forward for New Zealand was to continue with a Bill English-led National
government, and Pakuranga agreed, with 61.7 per cent of the party vote going towards National. I want to wish Jacinda Ardern and her new coalition all the best, as their success, is New Zealand’s success. “Regardless of who was going to be in charge, I am committed to being the best Member of Parliament I can be for the people of Pakuranga, and now more than ever I am looking forward to the next three years.

Fireworks are fun for us, but they can be incredibly scary and stressful for animals. As we head into Guy Fawkes night, here are some tips to make sure your furry friends are safe: • If possible, stay home - they’ll be less stressed with company. • Walk dogs before the fireworks start - this will help tire them out and hopefully put them to sleep. • ALWAYS keep dogs and cats inside when fireworks are being let off. • Close all windows and doors, block off cat flaps to stop pets escaping and keeping noise to a minimum. • Draw the curtains, and if the animals are used to the sounds of TV or radio, switch them on. • If dogs start to look stressed, remain calm yourself remembering that as “pack leader” your dog looks for guidance from you. • If you have small pets that live outdoors, don’t forget to partly cover cages / pens and aviaries with blankets for sound proofing. • Take special care of elderly or nervous animals – speak to your veterinarian before Guy Fawkes about whether calming medication would be suitable. • Make sure your pet is microchipped, or has a collar on with up to date contact details in case they are panicked by the fireworks and escape.

Small changes can make a big difference incentive has been running, the goal of minimising plastic bags consumption has been impressive. It is estimated at least 30,000 plastic bags have not been consumed in this time. On top of this, just over $1600 has been raised for Women’s Refuge by the one in three customers who have chosen to donate to the cause. Caroline Eve is extremely pleased with this initial response. It really does show that local communities can make a big difference by instigating small changes. I magine how many plastic bags Caroline Eve customers are going to save in the months to come!!

Recently shoppers at your local Caroline Eve store in Howick have been making small changes to help reduce plastic bag consumption. And at the same time, they are supporting their local Women’s Refuge organisations. Since August, every time you make a purchase at Caroline Eve, you are asked if you would like to put the purchase in your own bag. This saves using a new plastic bag. If you wish to use a new bag, you are asked to donate 10 cents to Women’s refuge. Caroline Eve’s nationwide initiative, “Bags of Choice”, is completely voluntary. And in the nine weeks this

Feedback Pharmac needs boost
JH10924
Cancer touches all New Zealanders in some way and the number of cancer diagnoses is on the rise, with 1 in 3 of us likely to be diagnosed in our lifetime. Giving hope, in the fight to beat cancer, new immunotherapy medicines are emerging with better survival data than we’ve seen before. Yet, because of New Zealand’s strict system for funding, many of these essential new medicines are not currently available to all who need them. As New Zealanders, we should be challenging the new Government to ensure cancer is seen as a priority, not only in terms of faster access to specialists and treatment; but also faster access to the most effective medicines. Patients may be getting diagnosed more quickly, but in many cases they are being given treatments which have been superseded in most other countries. Medsafe is one of the best agencies in the world at registering new medicines. Medsafe’s appraisal and approval timelines are consistent with other global regulators such as the European and Australian agencies. However, New Zealand is the only OECD country with a capped pharmaceutical budget and while Pharmac does its best within the existing budget, the trade-off is lack of access to new medicines. A study by Professor Frank Lichtenberg noted that between 2006 and 2010, about 12 per cent of deaths from cancer within five years from diagnosis would have

been avoided if cancer survival in New Zealand was the same as Australia. Every new tumour type must go through the same time-consuming application, committee review, potential reapplication, ranking and negotiation process. This leads to long delays and no guarantee of eventual funding. Currently, the average wait time for Pharmac funding is more than three years. Things are very different overseas. For example, in Germany medicines are funded immediately upon registration followed by a formal reimbursement process that is concluded within one year. Other countries in Europe have recognised immunotherapies’ significant potential to treat multiple cancers and have taken specific steps to ensure timely access for their citizens. Closer to home, the Australian Health Minister Greg Hunt announced recently that he had asked the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (Australia’s Pharmac equivalent) to “find a way” to assess cancer medicines that treat multiple tumours, to help ensure timely patient access. During the election campaign the New Zealand First party included a policy to conduct a review of the efficiency and efficacy of Pharmac’s operations and of the adequacy of pharmaceutical funding. The Labour party pledged to immediately begin work on an early access to medicines scheme that will give patients access to innovative life-

Taxes help everyone
Margaret Scott says “it is not fair that the taxpayer forks out to help the poor”. I would say it is simple natural justice. A person’s situation in life is caused by a myriad of factors, not least luck. A lot of how you end up in life is down to where you started out - ie an accident of birth. In recent times we seem to have returned to the concept of the ‘undeserving’ poor. Nobody ‘deserves’ to be poor. Poverty is largely down to structural imbalances in the economy – the gap between rich and poor is at the highest level it’s been for decades. Poverty is built in by how much goes to the very rich - cutting taxes to the rich while cutting benefits and services makes those at the middle and bottom poorer. Trickle-down economics is a fallacy. Taxation is the fairest way to pay for essential services and to make sure we live in a society where everyone is able to live decently. Societies which fail to address inequality suffer at all levels. Taxation is a percentage, so those who have less pay less. Even the top rates of tax only apply on income above the top rate. I would far rather pay a little more tax than see increasing levels of homelessness or old folk waiting ages for hip replacements. Personal responsibility is all very well, but which of us hasn’t made the odd poor choice in our lives? Whether it sinks you or not is largely down to luck. Instead of resenting paying taxes, how about being a little compassionate. After all, there but for the grace of God go any of us.

saving new medicines. The National party has increased the funding to Pharmac over its term in government. It appears that all parties have in some way recognised that there is work to be done to improve access to medicines. A boost to the Pharmac budget of just $40 per person and the introduction of a mechanism for rapid access to breakthrough new medicines would mean we truly would have a world-class system for medicines funding in New Zealand.

Big celebration for local Baha’i By Farida Master
T
here were around a 100 get-togethers hosted during the Labour Weekend as the Baha’i community welcomed people into their homes to mark the 200th birth anniversary of prophet Bahá’u’lláh— a Persian nobleman born in Tehran in 1817. Locally and internationally, Baha’i members are organising a string of events over the next month to invite the public to learn more about their world view of peace, oneness of humanity and worldwide unity. “It’s heart-warming to see so much diversity in east Auckland,” said Behzad, as he and his wife Tahereh Eghdamian welcomed guests to their home in Flat Bush. Talking about a faith
that accepts and appreciates diversity, he said, “The earth is our country and mankind its citizens. The mission of Baha’u’llah is to unify humankind and bring people from different cultures to live as one family, without prejudice, a family that works together to bring about transformational social change.” An award-winning PhD student in structural and earthquake engineering, Shahab Ramhormozian added a musical touch to the evening by playing an ancient Iranian bowed-string instrument called the Kamancheh. He described it as “an ancestor of the violin”. The musical performance was followed by grand Persian fare. Further down the road in the semi-rural area of Flat Bush at the home of Jamaliyeh and Steve

Drake there was a mix of different cultures and Interfaith leaders of the community sharing a beautiful aromatic meal. An eclectic mix, also present was a young group of French students of different faiths, on a world tour of 20 countries and five continents to study different interfaith initiatives. “Our main goal is to make an inventory of the most relevant interfaith initiatives that we find during the tour,” said 21-year-old Bettina Borgel. Tofik Mamedov, Labour Party candidate for Botany in General Election 2017 with roots in the Republic of Azerbaijan, was spotted at both the gatherings that had a sprinkling of people from Iran, Russia, Turkey, France, UK, India, Sri Lanka and New Zealand celebrating diversity.

Super specials at Visique Botany I
f you need new glasses, you should go along to Visique Optometrists in Botany for some unbeatable specials on offer in November. These specials include a free comprehensive eye test (usually valued at $59) when you buy spectacles. The other offer is when you buy one pair of glasses, you get another free (terms and conditions apply). “We do a comprehensive eye test. We check for glaucoma, cataracts, and visual fields and take a photo of the retina,” manager, Irene Leong explains. “This is an excellent offer for the month of November,” she adds. For the ‘buy one pair of spectacles and get one free offer’ the selection on offer includes a huge range of contemporary and classical styles.
Visique Optometrists also have invested in new IPL equipment to treat the Dry Eye Syndrome, which affects more than 20 per cent of our adult population. Our eyelids have special glands called Meibomian glands which produce an important oil layer to prevent the evaporation of tears. When there is a dysfunction in these glands, this can lead to Dry Eye Syndrome. This syndrome is also part of the natural aging process, as a side effect of many medications, or living in a dry or windy climate. People who have undergone cataract surgery, eye laser treatment or wear contact lenses may also be sufferers. Through a series of safe, noninvasive laser treatments, the Meibomian glands are stimulated to return to their normal function.

Excitement builds for Jungle Book offering By FARIDA MASTER
I
t’s almost 11 years since Pakuranga Heights Primary School has hosted a major school production. And students are counting days for the drama to unfold on stage. Rehearsing for one the all-time-favourite Disney production The Jungle Book, 150 senior students have been working on the epic adventure for the last four months. “All of our senior students have been involved in the
production in some way,” says Bronwyn Browne, junior teacher who is working with Melissa Quinn to bring the production together. “Whether it is singing in the choir, dancing, making costumes, sound and lighting, hair and make-up, designing the backdrop and scenery or being in the front of the house selling tickets — every child has a role to play. This is to show that every part is critically important for the success of a production,” she says. “Also, this collaborative

Ardmore Water Treatment Plant opens its doors to locals Watercare is hoping to see lots of local faces when the annual Open Day at Ardmore Water Treatment Plant takes place on November 18. “We are aware that we have a lot of neighbours and whilst we correspond with people from time to time, we’d love this opportunity to meet them faceto-face and show what we do,” says Watercare southern water treatment manager, Nolwenn Lagadec. “Each tour guide is a member

of our staff and they have plenty of great stories to tell, as well as lots of interesting facts and details about how the Ardmore Water Treatment plant treats Auckland’s drinking water to the highest standard.” The Ardmore water treatment plant treats up to 350 million litres per day of water abstracted from four dams in the Hunua Ranges. It is the largest water treatment plant in New Zealand, utilising 83 clarifiers and 30
filters, with water flowing under gravity from the Hunua Ranges, through the plant and into Auckland’s water supply system as far as the North Shore. Each tour lasts around 45 minutes and a reasonable level of fitness is required as it involves walking and climbing some stairs. Children over the age of 12 are welcome. ■ To make a booking and for more information, email open. day@water.co.nz.

Howick Local Board member Adele White loves a creative challenge. When she is not dealing with local transport, heritage or regulatory matters, she enjoys stepping out to capture the beauty of nature on her camera. Here are some snapshots she shares with the Times readers. “I was doing seven-day black and white Photos of your Life Facebook challenge which was just a bit of fun. “Basically, people take the seven pictures and post one each day, challenging someone else to do the same. I am often challenged by my sister in Australia.” Currently she has challenged Howick Local Board member John Spiller to bring some black and whites to the table. Watch this space.

SLEEPYHEAD BEDS
ceanz Seafood market on Ti Rakau Drive in Botany Downs was recently named as Auckland’s Top Chip Shop 2017. The award is the run by The Chip Group which is a division of Potatoes New Zealand. To qualify for the award, stores have to produce chips with a fat content below 9 per cent. Once qualified, stores are mystery shopped and a number of factors are assessed in deciding the winner. This is the second time the Botany store has won the award and the sixth time an Oceanz Seafood outlet has taken out a regional award. Store owner Ali Lokhandwala paid tribute to his staff when collecting the award and in particular head cook Rita Harris who has been at the Botany Outlet for over ten years. Ali calls Rita the “Fish & Chip Mother” as her dedication to
producing a consistent quality product is what has kept the store at the top of its game over a long period of time. Ali said other keys to their success was using the best quality oil, changing it regularly and also having access to the best quality, fresh fish in New Zealand which helps ensure that the oil is well maintained. While quality oil and fish are much more expensive, it does allow Ali to sleep better knowing his customers are getting the best product that is available. Oceanz Botany are celebrating their 13th birthday this week and the award proves that it is not an unlucky number for everyone. Come visit Oceanz at 451 Ti Rakau Drive to see their great collection of fresh and frozen seafood along with the award-winning Fish & Chips – you won’t be disappointed.

Does migration affect prices?
Spring sale
Net migration flows & house prices – is there a connection? Auckland Property Market Research for October 2017 presents some interesting data
R
ecent migration data from Statistics New Zealand indicates that net migration continues to grow at record levels as New Zealand’s economic growth outpaces many other developed countries, including Australia. Using net migration figures from Statistics New Zealand and sales data from REINZ, the latest Crockers Property Investment (CPII) survey compares long-term migration across major New Zealand cities and look for links to the trends seen in housing prices for those areas. Of interest is the clear pattern of migration dips in March-May and November each year. This suggests that selling property may not be recommended during these periods as demand may be lower, and conversely, these periods could be good times to buy. Focusing on the major centres in the North Island, Auckland has generally experienced steady growth in house prices over time, with the median house price increasing 35 per cent since July 2014. Over the same period, net migration has contributed approximately 7 per cent to Auckland’s population, showing that median house prices have increased at a faster rate than net migration.

Crockers Property Investment Index
This month the Auckland Rental Property Investment Index has decreased, but remains on par with the Performance Index. This reflects an increase in the proportion of investors planning to ‘make no changes’ to the size of their property portfolio, coupled with a corresponding decrease in those planning to ‘increase’ their investment. The Auckland Rental Property Performance Index has also decreased, following two consecutive months of improvement. This movement reflects an increase in the proportion of investors who feel their portfolios will perform ‘the same’ and a decrease in those who feel that their investments will perform ‘better’.

Auckland sales & rental update
■■ Auckland median prices and sales numbers The median sales price has increased slightly from $825,000 to $831,250, but is now approximately 1 per cent lower than the same time last year. Meanwhile, sales volume has improved slightly from 1791 to 1916 but remains lower than the same point last year (20 per cent down from August 2016). ■■ Auckland Rental Prices The average Auckland rent for a 2-bedroom residential property has remained stable at $479, while the 2-bedroom rent across New Zealand has decreased slightly from $400 to $385. This has resulted in the Auckland 2-bedroom premium increasing slightly from 20 per cent to 24 per cent. The average rent for 3-bedroom properties in Auckland has softened this month from $616 to $610, while rents across New Zealand have also decreased slightly from $460 to $450 – resulting in the Auckland 3-bedroom premium to increase slightly from 34 per cent to 36 per cent.
In the latest CPII survey in association with IPSOS Crockers asked investors about their intentions to move out of Auckland and compared responses to similar questions asked in June 2012, July 2015 and June 2016. A total of 82 per cent of respondents to this latest survey plan to stay in Auckland over the next year – this has increased slightly compared to previous years. A relatively small proportion of Auckland property investors are planning to relocate elsewhere within New Zealand (7 per cent, down 3 points since June 2016), while only 2 per cent are planning to move overseas within the year – on par with the results seen in previous waves. OPEN HOME For the few that plan on leaving Auckland, www.braycostainless.co.nz the main reasons are ‘quality of life’ (64 per cent), ‘family reasons’ (36 per cent) and ‘housing affordOPEN HOME ability’ (27 per cent). Of the total sample, 98 per cent live in New Limited Stock • Must Go! Zealand and own property. Perhaps not surprisingly, given the nature of the Crockers database, TABLES From inc GST the majority (64 per cent) of respondents felt OPEN HOME that they would ‘retain their property for rental income’ should they need to move away, up 6 points since June 2016, while only 25 per cent OPEN HOME would ‘sell’ their property (down 4 points since OPEN HOME last wave). The majority (75 per cent) claim they would ‘use a professional property management company’ – this figure has grown 10 points since 2016 and is STOOLS From inc GST currently at its strongest since we first asked this CHAIRS inc GST question in June 2012. Teed running for Mental Health By Kelly Teed
I
f you know me at all you’ll know I’ve never been an athletic person. It’s not entirely through lack of trying — I’m very much a ‘have a go’ person. It’s just that my brain never properly sends those co-ordination signals from my head to my limbs. I was never the first person picked for sports teams in PE class at school, I was never going to get any sports awards and the only way to get me to run voluntarily was if you set an axe-wielding clown or maniac with a chainsaw onto chasing me. Are you getting the picture yet? Historically, running and I have not mixed. And yet at some point earlier this year, things changed. I enrolled in a 10km race on Waiheke despite only ever running that distance once before – two years prior on a treadmill. I’d love to say I trained extensively but the truth is I ran approximately three kilometres, three times before struggling through the race where I remembered exactly why I don’t run. So naturally, I got home and signed myself up to run 21.1km in the Auckland Barfoot and Thompson Half Marathon in October. Yes, you read that right. I’m running 21.1 kilometres from Devonport to Victoria Park with a few loops and detours on the way. Why would I put myself through such torture, I hear you ask?
The answer is simple. I’m running to raise money for charity. Not just any charity – a charity close to my heart. I’m running as a charity hero for the Mental Health Foundation. Suicide. It’s a big word. No one really likes to think about it, let alone talk about it. And yet whether or not we talk about it, it happens. Far more frequently than we’d care to admit. Recent provisional figures show New Zealand’s suicide rate has increased for the fourth year in a row. Between July 2016 and June 2017, 606 people took their own life. Let’s just let that number sink in. Six hundred and six people – in our tiny country – decided that their lives were no longer worth living. That’s more than the number of students in a lot of schools around the country and to be honest, I find that statistic truly horrifying. New Zealand has some of the highest suicide rates in the developed world and I refuse to sit back and accept things the way they currently are. People should not have to wait weeks on end for professional help – especially not people who actively want to die. Depression is a dark, lonely place. Multiple emotions running through your head all at once – including, but not limited to, anger, inexplicable sadness, dread, guilt, self-hate and loathing. It’s an ongoing battle in your mind. Simply getting out of bed is an overwhelming thought, let alone having a shower and getting dressed. The negativity feels like a constant weight physically

dragging you down. I know firsthand how debilitating it can be because I have been there before. I understand how everyday tasks can become ten times harder. On a good day, I could go out and
socialise. I could laugh with my friends and have fun and quiet the little nagging voice in the back of my head. But on a bad day, simply having a shower and getting dressed was a huge accomplishment. I didn’t know why I was sad, I just was and I was angry with myself for feeling that way. I was filled with selfdoubt, convinced my friends didn’t actually like me and that no one would really care if I spoke about how I was feeling. I was scared of being told that other people had it worse, I was scared of being accused of lying and I was scared that people would judge me for how weak I felt for feeling the way I did. I became a master of deception. I’d go to school and try to function normally but no one knew the dark thoughts in my mind. No one knew I would come home and cry myself to sleep. When I finally did ask for help, all my fears proved to be false. I was believed immediately and signed up to counselling. When I eventually spoke out publicly a couple of years later, I was met with even more love and support. Since I’ve started running, my mental health has improved significantly. Even just going for a short 10 minute jog can do wonders for clearing my mind. It’s easy to think that ‘one person won’t make a difference’ but that’s where all the difference can be made. So on October 29, I will take to the streets to pound the pavement for
21.1km and while I silently curse myself for putting myself through the pain and torture, I will remind myself I am one of the lucky ones. I was lucky to not have to wait weeks or months on end for professional help like so many do. I’m lucky to have people surrounding me who love and support me, I have coping techniques and the ability to recognise when I’m going downhill mentally.I count myself as lucky because I saw the light at the end of the tunnel when so many people don’t and now I want to help as many people as I can out of that dark, lonely tunnel because I know what it’s like.I am alive - and that makes me one of the lucky ones. I’m running to raise as much as possible for the Mental Health Foundation. Frank, Ailsa celebrate 60 wonderful years By Farida Master The first time Frank Morris set eyes on Ailsa Hilliam, it was at a dance at Eden Roskill RSA, in the summer of 1955. A young and handsome Frank purposefully walked towards the girl who had caught his fancy to ask her for a dance. But at the last minute he changed his mind and asked the girl sitting beside her instead. Laughing, Ailsa recalls: “He wasn’t sure if I was a good dancer so he asked my friend.” However Frank couldn’t resist asking Ailsa for the next dance. The rest is history as the couple got married two years later on November 30, 1957. They read out a telegram that they received from one of their friends that read: ‘Been raining hope you have a little son later, best of luck’. Aisla clearly remembers her wedding dress had the best satin you could buy with a silk organza overlay and a guipure lace neckline. Their wedding was featured in the New Zealand Herald newspaper. They will be celebrating their Diamond Wedding Jubilee on November 25 at the Summerset by the Park Retirement Village,

which they moved into six years ago. Walking down memory lane as she leafs through the beautifully preserved black and white wedding picture album, Ailsa says how she had to leave her

job at Ceylon Tea once she got married at the age of 21. “In those days women were not allowed to work once we got married....though I think the rule changed, six months after our wedding,” she says.

The reason behind it, says Frank pointing to his stomach “is because women would soon have a big tummy. Also women took too long to do shopping during their lunch break at work,” he laughs.
Parents to three daughters (Wendy, Kristine and Raewyn) and son (Stephen); grandparents to 18 grandchildren and six great grand children, Frank says he has been a planner all his life and has been working hard at organising their 60th wedding anniversary, to which he’s invited 60 people. Having worked in fields that required planning and production, he takes pride in getting his three daughters getting married, in a span of 11 months in the same year. “That’s what they wanted, and none of them wanted a joint wedding.” Apart from being a keen dancer, Frank spent a lot of his time on the field, playing soccer and cricket while his wife was immersed in a world brush-stroked with colour and creativity. Ailsa is a talented landscape artist who exhibits her works of art all over New Zealand. Her painting adorns the wall of the retirement village as well. Ask her about Frank, the man she has spent her entire married life with and she smiles saying: “He’s a cool man, pretty cool, most of the time.” As for 82-year-old Frank, he simply looks into his wife’s eyes and says, “I love you.”

Making a welcome return Marie Raos HPCC Premier Men were declared 371/6. Andrew Morrison 145, Daniel Young 79, Andy de Boorder 66. Takapuna were on 33/1 at stumps with Danru Ferns 1/12. The match continues next Saturday at Lloyd Elsmore Park. Howick Pakuranga started well in the Hedley Howarth two day championship on a wellprepared Lloyd Elsmore wicket by staging an opening stand between Bill Walsh and Daniel Young of 84 runs. From that point on, the home side remained in complete control throughout the day amassing a formidable 371 before snatching an early wicket against the playing through champions Takapuna in the eight overs left for play. New World HPCC Premier Women played two more matches in the Pearl Dawson T20 competition at Shore Rd winning against Papatoetoe and losing to Takapuna. The match against neighbours Papatoetoe ended in a tie at 88 each and a bowl off was needed to decide the winner. Fortunately Howick New World HPCC won this narrowly by taking two wickets to Papatoetoe’s 1. Scoreboard:

Wallabies’ victory delivers timely lesson W
hile Matilda had cause to waltz in celebrating the Wallabies’ 23-18 Suncorp Stadium rugby test triumph, the All Blacks fans were left to ponder on the importance of their missing stars. While Lima Sopoaga and Scott Barrett have made progress this year, they didn’t have the impact of the testhardened Beauden Barrett and Brodie Retallick, both of whom have won International Rugby Player of the Year awards. Nor does Damian McKenzie, hero of the hard-fought Cape Town triumph against South Africa, have the all-round game of Ben Smith who is on a well-earned sabbatical. Other first stringers out of action with injuries include nippy right wing Nehe Milner-Skudder and props Owen Franks and Joe Moody who have been replaced by Waisake Naholo, Nepo Laulala and Kane Hames who have all done the jersey proud. It reflects well on the depth of talent at the disposal of
selectors Steve Hansen, Ian Foster and Grant Fox who have not been afraid to give youth its head. Another to grab his chance was Jordie Barrett who would probably have been preferred to McKenzie as the starting fullback had injury not sidelined him for the season. With Rieko Ioane, Ngani Laumape, Vaea Fifita, Ofa Tu’ungafasi and David Havili other recent All Blacks who will be joined by newcomers Matt Duffie. Jack Goodhue, Tim Perry and Asafo Aumua on the northern tour, the selectors are building for the future. Harbour and Blues right wing Duffie, a former St Kents student, has a good all-round game and has been preferred to Julian Savea. At 20, electrifying left wing Ioane is already a star and speedy blindside flanker Fifita scored a sensational try in his test debut against Argentina. The prolific try-scoring fast and powerful Aumua has the potential to be an even better attacking hooker than Dane
Agnew’s Angle
Coles. Meanwhile full credit to Australia for their longawaited win against an All Blacks team that lacked discipline and were punished accordingly by referee Wayne Barnes. With Kurtley Beale and Israel Folau dangerous attackers and Reece Hodge capping his early intercept try with a crucial 53m penalty goal, Australian pride was restored although two earlier wins against them ensured the Bledisloe Cup remains in NZ. The truth of the adage “when the going gets tough, the tough get going” was reflected in the bone-crunching tackles made by Sam Cane and captain Kieran Read. Apart from a senseless kicking away of possession in the dying stages, Sonny Bill Williams had his best game of the season and was the pick of the backs.

Meanwhile another Canterbury versus Tasman Mitre Cup 10 premiership final this Saturday in Christchurch reflects the strength of the Crusaders franchise. Having taken the Ranfurly Shield from Canterbury with a magnificent comeback, Taranaki would have fancied their chances but were pipped 30-29 by Tasman. Although losing their semifinal 35-24 to Canterbury, North Harbour can reflect on a good season under astute coach Tom Courtney with their 50-plus win against woeful Auckland a highlight. Having beaten a much improved Northland 49-21, Wellington should win the championship final against tenacious Bay of Plenty who accounted for Otago 48-32. A return to the premiership would be just reward for the Lions who have Jackson Garden-Bachop, Thomas UmagaJenson and Wes Goosen starring in a classy backline.
