The investigating Fire Risk Management officer Phil Faidley said the cause of the fire could not be conclusively determined.

Looking back at 2017 merville Shopping Court on Meadowlands Drive, Howick as well as a shop at Newmarket Plaza in Newmarket. Mr Fung, who has an office and factory at East Tamaki, said he is “very upset” that both premises have been hit since the beginning of 2017.

Bringing in the Lunar New Year At the stroke of midnight, there was a rush to light a thousand incense sticks at the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist temple in Flat Bush. The fragrance of incense filled the air as the young and old gathered near the main shrine at the temple on Friday evening to make light offerings and seek the blessings of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Venerable Abbess Manshin led a prayer service. The Lunar New Year was welcomed with the ringing of the morning bell, a roll of drums and the traditional Lion dance.

Students welcome new principal Tuesday morning was the first day back at school for students at Bucklands Beach Primary School (BBPS), and the students had a lot of questions to ask the new principal Kelly Slater-Brown. “Where have you taught before?” “How many children do you have?” were some of the questions thrust at Mrs Slater-Brown. The school organised a formal welcome ceremony for the new head of the school, along with three new teachers Michael Grimmer, Lorna Foulger and Anushka Zaveri.

Green go-ahead for Botany-Pakuranga branch The Botany-Pakuranga branch of the Green Party has kicked off to a grand start after the first public meeting was held on February 16. It was attended by around 20 people, including MP Marama Davidson. Campaigning, fundraising, markets, door knocking and event hosting are top on the list of activities for the Botany-Pakuranga branch in the lead-up to the general election on September 23, said event organiser Julie Zhu. The 24-year-old has been involved with the Green Party for three years.

Retiring after 43 years at Pakuranga College She entered the portals of Pakuranga College as a newly married, 21-year-old. After spending more than four decades at the college, Kay Davies retired last Friday at the age of 65, marking an end of an era. Mrs Davies aka Mrs Thorn has been a “much loved aunty/grandmother ” to many international students as well as Dean of Rimu House to different generations of students. Always dressed impeccably, some refer to her as the elegant ‘Lady Kay’.

An expensive day’s catch

Three men have been sentenced and fined a total of $3750 at the Manukau District Court in relation to one of east Auckland’s most contentious fisheries offences. On February 2, Tremain Maaka, Tobias Maaka and Rian Stuart were charged with possession of undersized snapper, undersized scallops and undersized kingfish.

Time to bin the bags

Residents in the former Manukau City Council area will say goodbye to rubbish bags this year as Auckland Council introduces rubbish wheelie bins for a new service starting in September. Ian Stupple, Auckland Council’s general manager Waste Solutions, says almost 110,000 wheelie bins will be provided to houses in the Manukau and Howick wards.

Looking back at 2017 Fun and games at summer festival For years they partnered with the Military Tattoo for one of the main events in the Howick calendar. But for the very first time, Howick Lions Club went solo to run the Howick Lions Summer Festival on Sunday at Lloyd Elsmore Park. With support from the Howick Local Board, they managed to pull off a fun show.

Black Caps call up ‘biggest call of my life’ It was the phone call every cricketmad Kiwi child dreams of getting one day. Martin Guptill had suffered a hamstring injury at training and had been ruled out of the upcoming Eden Park match against South Africa. The call turned a dream into reality for 20-year-old South African player Glenn Phillips of the Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club. “When he said ‘yeah, we’d like you to play in this upcoming T20’ it’s sort of unreal because you dream about it and you don’t really know how to react except be ecstatic about it.”

Five to stand for National The National Party has confirmed five people will contest the Pakuranga electorate seat which will this year be vacated by National MP Maurice Williamson. Mr Williamson is to take a diplomatic posting in Los Angeles. In July last year he announced he would not seek re-election at the General Election in September. To avoid triggering an expensive and disruptive by-election, the MP agreed to remain in Parliament until at least six months before the election.

Bridge upgrade long overdue The dangerous Chapel Road Bridge is to be upgraded. The bridge, more than 60-years-old, has been the site of multiple crashes in the past decade. Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross said the upgrade was long overdue. Between 2006 and 2016, there were 56 crashes on this section of road - 26 injury crashes, including four fatalities and six serious injury crashes. “It’s just not good enough for this section of road to sit like it is for much longer,” Mr Lee said.

What it doesn’t do is track the volume or record the weight of the household rubbish,” he emphasised, binning the conspiracy theory.

It’s been years in the making, and now the $5.9 million brand new ferry pier at Half Moon Bay has been officially opened by Mayor Phil Goff. The fully-sheltered, beautifullydesigned pier replaces the old dock at Half Moon Bay, providing a modern and safe ferry experience for commuters. During the last five years, patronage of the Half Moon Bay ferry pier has increased by more than 50 per cent. To manage the growing demand, Auckland Transport added four more ferry services to Half Moon Bay last October. A new bus stop and bus turnaround area are scheduled to be built near the new pier soon.

Losing their locks for a cause It was meant to happen a week earlier but songstress Adele had them postpone their plans. Helping Adele’s die-hard fans make it to Mt Smart Stadium come rain or sunshine was a priority for Howick and Eastern Buses operators. There was a sense of bonhomie and laughter as the Howick and Eastern lunch room was converted into a barber shop for the day and men and women drivers lined up to cut off their locks for charity.

School awaits news on world record There’s no current world record for the biggest pirate sword fight in the Guinness Book of World Records. That’s something Owairoa Primary School hope they’ve changed. On April 6, 923 participants gathered to take part in the Great Pirate Clash — a sword fight of epic proportions in the hopes of setting a new world record. The fight, which took place on the school sports field, lasted for approximately 15 minutes as mini pirates battled one another from various ship bases. “It’s one of those weeks we’ll never forget,” said Owairoa Primary School teacher William Howard, who organised the event. Now, it’s a waiting game as the school eagerly awaits a response from the Guinness Book of World Records to discover whether the endeavour to set a new world record was as successful as the fight itself.

Thousands turnout for Anzac Day service The glint of medals in the morning sun, a sense of pride, honour and camaraderie, an Anzac Day parade, a flight of Warbirds, the firing of the Minute Gun, laying of wreaths on the cenotaph at the memorial service at Stockade Hill - all marked the 102nd anniversary of the Gallipoli landings by Anzac troops. The turnout at both, the Dawn Service as well as the 11am Civic Service in Howick was huge. “We may be rivals on the sports field but are comrades on the battlefield,” said chair of Howick Local Board David Collings about returned servicemen and women across the ditch. Students of local schools and other youth groups all assembled at the Stockade Hill to reflect and honour the fallen heroes at the special memorial service—lest we forget.

Turiarangi Tai, 22, appeared in the High Court at Auckland on Wednesday morning in front of Justice Simon Moore. He pleaded not guilty through his lawyer to charges of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. Ms Koroheke was fatally shot at close range on April 4 at an address in Pakuranga in what is believed to be a domestic incident. Another woman charged with being an accessory appeared alongside Tai in court and pleaded not guilty. She was granted interim name suppression.

Chatsworth Crescent residents had their Sunday morning plans disrupted as they awoke to discover many cars on the Pakuranga Heights street had been the victim of tyre slashing overnight. Roy Dormer’s car was one of those targeted in the event which he said was “kind of uncalled for”. He was driving to church in the morning when he heard a funny noise and discovered one of his tyres had gone flat. Upon closer inspection, he discovered the tyre wasn’t just punctured, but had been finely cut. Another Chatsworth Crescent resident estimated around $2500 worth of damage had been caused. Area prevention manager Senior Sergeant Steve Richards said frontline police staff were aware of the incidents and would be carrying out extra patrols in the area.

World Masters rugby player on the mend Steve Ioane, the Ponsonby player who collapsed in a game against a Pakuranga United Rugby Club (PURC) side in the World Masters Games clash last week, has been under the knife and is improving. Ioane, a relative of All Blacks star Rieko Ioane, suffered a medical event during the Pakuranga Presidents v Ponsonby EPs game last Thursday. A Ponsonby Rugby Club representative told the Times Ioane suffered a heart attack and had surgery on Tuesday and is “on the mend”.

‘That’s not on!’

Ninety-year-old Colin Stonex is in shock after having a nasty fall caused by loose gravel chips on the newly sealed Kilkenny Drive in Dannemora. His neighbour Tweety Tang spotted him sitting on the footpath with blood trickling down his face, hands and knees. Ms Tang and the lawn mowing man working on Mr Stonex’s section at the time called for an ambulance and rushed him to hospital. After the story was published online Auckland Transport spokesman Mark Hannan said in a post: “Auckland Transport had no idea about the extent of Mr Stonex’s injuries from his

accident. As a result we provided technical information about the work on Kilkenny Drive. We have now asked the Times for Mr Stonex’s details so we can offer any assistance we can in his recovery.”

Dead man’s name confirmed by police Police have today confirmed that a male found dead on a property in Whitford was missing man John Prangley. Mr Prangley, 55, left his Whitford address on Thursday, April 13. Police said on April 28 that he did not take any personal belongings with him and had not made contact with family or friends which was out of character for him. On Wednesday, police said they were at the scene of a sudden death at an address in Whitford. They did not believe the death was suspicious. The matter will be referred to the coroner.

Respected cop “taken far too early” He was a well-respected police officer, family man and a pillar in his community. Forty two-year-old officer Jeremy Field died at his Beachlands home from natural causes on Sunday, April 30. He leaves behind wife Jane Field, who is also a police officer, 12-year-old daughter Faith and 10-year-old son Preston. More than 1000 people gathered at Elim Christian Centre East in Botany on Thursday, May 4, to farewell Mr Field in a cer-

emony that included a rousing haka. The service was followed by a private cremation. Counties Manukau east area commander Inspector Wendy Spiller, who spoke at the funeral, said the dedicated officer was an integral part of the local community. Building trust between police and the community, particularly with teenagers, was something Mr Field was especially skilled at and passionate about, she said. “He was a fantastic officer, involved in all facets of the community.” “He will be missed.”

June Shots fired at Headin’ Home bar Shots were fired and staff were threatened as an armed robbery took place at Headin’ Home Bar on Ti Rakau Drive on Wednesday afternoon. The disguised offenders entered the bar around 12:30pm where around a dozen customers were inside. Two of the offenders, who were armed with firearms, threatened the staff and forced the customers to lie down on the floor. Shots were fired before the offenders fled the scene with cash and into a white car that was waiting outside. A number of police were immediately called to the scene and surrounding area while the Eagle helicopter and several dog units also carried out searches of the area.

What makes us human? Nicola Jackson’ exhibition The Bloggs finished our 2017 year off with a bang! If you weren’t able to see it last year, there is still time - the exhibition closes on Saturday January 13. The Bloggs – a title that refers to the British colloquialism ‘Joe Bloggs’ to denote the typical everyday man – considers what it is that makes us human. Nicola Jackson has created her version of an anatomy museum, filling vitrines and cabinets with a range of curious objects and adorning the walls with paintings of inquisitive characters. We are finishing the show with a free workshop for children, working with Nicola herself to use human features to decorate a plate. See our website for details on this event. Owairoa playground gets Spiderman seal of approval Spidey senses were tingling at Owairoa Primary School on Thursday afternoon as the school’s new playground was officially opened. But a playground wouldn’t be complete without thorough testing and who better to test it out than Spiderman himself? As he leaped and bounded across the playground, Spiderman even decided to show off his strength by lifting a member of staff above his head to loud cheers and applause from both teachers and students in the crowd. The playground, named Cole’s Corner after deputy principal Colin Cole, was decked out with streamers as the newest student of the school took on the honour of cutting the ribbon. Mr Cole, who has been a member of the school board for 15 years, said it was an honour to have the playground named after him, and an opportunity to give back to the community.

Sissons claims world cup title Former Macleans College student Ryan Sissons has picked up his first world cup title following a closefought finish in the ITU Madrid World Cup in Spain on Sunday. Sissons won in a total time of 1 hour 53 minutes, just eight seconds ahead of France’s Raphael Montoya. A huge lead group of 28 contested the first of the seven climbs on the bike course before a group of five (France’s Leo Bergere, Montoya and Simon Viein along with Stefan Zachaeus (LUX) and Sissons) pulled away on the final lap, triathlonworld.com reported.

Police calling for witnesses to suspicious approach Police are calling for witnesses to come forward after a Somerville intermediate student reported being followed on her way home

from school last week. The student, aged 11, reported being approached by two men wearing high visibility vests in a white van. They then followed her to a pedestrian alleyway where the girl managed to hide until they left before walking to meet her mother and notifying police. Acting Detective Senior Sergeant John Love said the girl was walking along Meadowland Drive, near Howick when the incident took place. Police canvassed the area but could not narrow down a suspect as it was too full of people with too many similarities to the report. Somerville Intermediate principal David Ellery confirmed the school was aware of the incident and had advised parents through email immediately after finding out. Mr Ellery said students had been informed and given a safety briefing around keeping themselves safe.

The recent terror attacks in the UK have left many on tenterhooks and wondering just who will be next. As it emerged that ISIS has claimed responsibility for a hostage incident in Melbourne on Monday night, it may feel slightly too close to home for some in New Zealand. However Defence Minister Mark Mitchell says we shouldn’t let fear affect how we live our lives. Mr Mitchell, who was in the area to campaign alongside National Party candidate for Pakuranga Simeon Brown, recently returned from the Defeat ISIS Conference in Copenhagen where he met with fellow Defence Ministers from 12 nations in the Global Coalition to defeat the extremist group. Speaking to the Times at Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts, Mr Mitchell said New Zealand had “outstanding security services” and that our defence forces were doing a “tremendous job in Iraq” as part of the wider coalition taking the war to ISIS. But he knows the fight’s not over. “It’s going to take continued commitment and resolve to make sure that we destroy ISIS.”

Theft “gutting” for local BMX club A local BMX club is offering a $500 reward after falling victim to theft for a second time over Queen’s Birthday Weekend. The Mountain Raiders BMX Club, based at Lloyd Elsmore Park had its two new team gazebos stolen over the long weekend. The gazebos, with the club’s signage on them, cost around $3000 and were only bought by the club just before Christmas. Club president Adam Darby said the repeated theft is “really gutting.” The club, which operates on donations and minimal funds, has building insurance but not contents insurance due to the high excess involved, so the stolen items were not able to be replaced under insurance.

Locals recognised in QBE Honours Seven individuals from the area have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday 2017 Honours List. Two were appointed Officers of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM), three were made Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) and two were awarded The Queen’s Service Medal. Those recognised were: ■■ Avon Cook – ONZM - Shamrock Park - For services to the manufacturing industry. ■■ Graeme James Steel – ONZM – Pakuranga - For services to sport. ■■ Ray Kenway Haffenden – MNZM - Howick For services to rugby league ■■ John Roy-Wojciechowski – MNZM – Howick - For services to the Polish community and philanthropy

Police minister Paula Bennett has announced that $1.8 million will be made available for robbery prevention at dairies, superettes and small local businesses. Businesses assessed as being at high risk of violent robberies will have the opportunity to apply for co-funding to support the purchase of panic and high volume interior alarms, DNA spray, fog cannons and time safes, she said. The money comes from the Justice Sector Fund and will be aimed specifically at small family or individually-owned businesses at risk that require financial assistance to install better security measures.

July High interest loans hitting community hard The service manager for Pakuranga and Howick Budgeting Services JL Holyoake says high interest online loans are financially ruining some of the community’s most vulnerable people. People are going online to get small loans to cover things like groceries between pay cheques she says, and not realising how quickly it all adds up with some interest rates up to 700 per cent.

“It’s an accident waiting to happen” The problem of a parking lane for residents on the busy Cascades Road being used by private vendors to sell cars is a long-standing one. And it’s getting worse with traffic congestion increasing on a road and with one entire lane being used as an unauthorised car yard. Locals want to know why the council isn’t issuing parking tickets.

Frustration over delay in Bucklands Beach restoration Concern is mounting over continuing delays relating to a restoration project at Bucklands Beach. Former Howick Local Board member Steve Udy says he is disappointed the Board has not yet prioritised repairing the sea wall and included it in its long-term plan. “I think that the local board needs to grasp the urgency and start to move on this, rather than just drifting with the current,” he says. “Within five years, if we leave the wall as is, it’s going to collapse and take the road down with it.”

“Turn landfill into park & Ride” With mounting frustration over increasing traffic congestion, there is a dire need for a central transportation hub featuring a park and ride facility according to Howick Local Board member Peter Young. Mr Young suggests that instead of spending millions of dollars on the creation of a free public park and reserve on the 53 acres of land bequeathed to Auckland Council, part of the Greenmount landfill could be used to create a central bus station.

Decile systems dropped

Dumping the school decile system will remove the stigma attached to the rankings and help remove misconceptions and bias, the president of Secondary Principals Association of New Zealand has said. Michael Williams, who is also principal at Pakuranga College, said the decile modelling is a crude mechanism for schools that have students who need a bit of extra resourcing because of disadvantage. Education Minister Nikki Kaye on Monday confirmed the Government will replace the decile system with a better one.

Looking back at 2017 Education Minister’s new lease on life good news for schools Education Minister Nikki Kaye says cancer has made her hungrier than ever for positive change. Kaye, who only stepped into the role as Education Minister in early May after undergoing treatment for breast cancer last year, visited Pakuranga College last week to meet the students and principals from local schools. The Minister says her cancer diagnosis has taught her a valuable lesson about not sweating the small stuff, which she is using to help her create the greatest amount of change.

‘We needed this for morale’ – Mamedov Jacinda Ardern’s elevation to leader of the Labour Party today will boost confidence and shore up morale, says local candidate Tofik Mamedov. The dramatic turn of events this morning saw Andrew Little quit as leader. He says no one was happy about Little’s resignation but the countries focus was just on “Andrew Little not faring well at the polls.” He says the party is excited to have Jacinda Arden as leader of the Labour Party.

Window washing could be banned in days Window washing at intersections will be banned within weeks, if not days according to Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross. Ross in September last year drafted a Bill to stop window washing and give police the power to fine them.He has also launched a petition asking for public support for the law change. The National Party senior whip told the Times he has managed to negotiate and get through the Parliament this week an amendment to fast track the ban on window washers.

‘He saved a life on Friday’

A Pakuranga local is being hailed a hero for his quick thinking following the Gossamer Liquor store theft. Robert Walters arrived at the store on Friday afternoon, just minutes after the theft, to find the store owner collapsed on the concrete outside the store. “My instincts just kicked in... I started performing CPR and John, the neighbour from next door, ran out and assisted in the CPR, which the ambulance driver says might have been what saved his life.”

Massive landslip at Clovelly Road’s clifftop house

A neighbour of the Eastern Beach home left sitting precariously on the edge of a collapsed cliff last week says she is disappointed with Auckland Council’s lack of concern for homeowners of Clovelly Road’s cliff top houses. She says despite the obvious risks to her property, it took more than two years to get a retaining wall signed off by council that would protect her home from landslips.

Fear for Beachlands drink drivers

A $150 fine slapped for window washers

Ten drivers were pinged for drink driving in Beachlands last weekend, and police are concerned. Counties Manukau Police ran a Road Policing Operation which targeted drink drivers and found nearly one in 26 cars driving through the Beachlands roundabout had an alleged drink driver behind the wheel. Beachlands was one of the main target areas for the two day operation that was carried out over Friday 5 and Saturday, August 6.

Hefty fines will be handed out after new legislation rules window washing illegal. An amendment has been made to the Land Transport Act which says pedestrians who wash or offer to wash a vehicle or part of a vehicle on a road will incur an instant $150 fine unless the vehicle is legally parked.

H&E routes lost to Go Bus There is a simmering of discontent amongst drivers with the reshuffling of bus operators and bus routes in Auckland. H & E Buses have lost the contract of some of the routes to Go Bus Transport, a major operator in Hamilton and now one of the biggest players in the business. The move is likely to see a reduction in hours for some local bus drivers. No jobs are likely to be lost.

Jami-Lee speaks out on local election drama MP for Botany Jami-Lee Ross has spoken out in defence of his involvement in the 2016 local government elections, saying he would “absolutely” do it again. A $100,000 Botany by-election was forced when former Howick Local Board member Lucy Schwaner, who is married to Ross, walked out of the inauguration ceremony. “I supported my wife and the team during the local body elections and I don’t resile from the fact I supported my wife,” Ross said.

Concern over new park contract The grass may not be greener, but it certainly will be longer in the Howick Botany ward parks and reserves. Grass will be allowed to grow up to a maximum of 200mm tall, almost as high as a litre milk bottle, before it needs to be cut, and trees could go without pruning for as long as five years. These are just two of the Key Performance Indicator measures in Auckland Council’s latest parks maintenance contract for the Howick Botany ward.

One of 51 COL’s in Auckland, the Howick Coast COL is about schools working together to improve performance levels among all students. The Howick Coast COL comprises eight local schools – Beachlands School, Botany Downs School, Brookby School, Clevedon School, Howick College, Howick Intermediate, Howick Primary and Maraetai Beach School.

Lightning blows up garden and fuse boxes A Cockle Bay Couple is counting their lucky stars after lightning struck their property, blasting the garden and blowing up two fuse boxes. Ashley and wife Lorna, who asked not to have their surnames published, and their dog had to move out of the Trelawn Place house following the lightning strike on Monday at around 4.50pm. Ashley said lightning struck the Norfolk pine on the property. The percussion from the strike was enough to blow out the neighbours window.

Fundraising success for Hillary House Students of Hillary House at Macleans College have once again banded together to fundraise thousands of dollars for the Himalayan Trust. The Himalayan Trust is an international non-profit humanitarian organisation that works in the Everest region of Nepal bringing quality education, safe water and better healthcare among others to the remote, mountainous region.

council put forward a change to the Auckland Unitary Plan (called proposed plan change 3) that seeks to protect views of Rangitoto, Hauraki gulf and the Islands from a public open space – Stockade Hill, Howick. For this year’s NIWA South and East Auckland Science and Technology Fair, Dylan created a device which can detect concussions and measure the impact of collisions during the sports games.

October Future bright for BBAFC girls

Girls at Bucklands Beach Association Football Club (BBAFC) have capped off a fantastic playing season. The 12th grade premiership team wrapped up with a fine winning performance at the Western Springs Auckland U12 girls knock out tournament. The winning goal was scored by Beth Stephens in the final in the second half of extra time — a goal made more special by it being her birthday.

Success on the slopes for Elim Corina Hooper from the Tamaki Estuary Protection Society Inc. Holds a young pied shag which died from starvation at the Panmure basin.

Pied Shag colony in trouble The starved body of a young pied shag is a harsh reminder that Auckland’s only suburban pied shag colony is dwindling. The shag was pulled out of the Panmure Basin, where they have nested and lived for years, on Sunday afternoon during a planned clean up of the Tamaki Estuary. Corina Hooper, a member of the Tamaki Estuary Protection Society, says overfishing has taken the Pied Shag colony from more than 150 breeding pairs 20 years ago, to only five breeding pairs today.

Guess who is coming for lunch? It’s not every day that the Prime Minister, Bill English taps you on the shoulder and wants to know how you are doing. There was a mix of emotion as people at the Botany Town Centre food court looked startled and excited as Mr English casually introduced himself to diners. He chatted, laughed, posed for selfies, signed autographs and even bent down to tie a three-year-old boy’s shoe laces.

As his first official act as Pakuranga’s new MP, Simeon Brown took to the streets waving the most important human hoardings of his campaign. The signs had a simple message for the Pakuranga electorate, ‘Thank you’. “I’m incredibly grateful and thankful to the people of Pakuranga for putting their trust and support behind me, and electing me to become their next MP,” says Brown.

Elim Christian College has won the Secondary School North Island Championships this week. The girls’ team, coached by Tody Granat, has remained the defending champion as the number one girls snowboarding team in the North Island. CELEBRATE SUMMER!

Looking back at 2017 Taking of shellfish at Cockle Bay could be banned for several years to allow the fishery to recover. Such a move is under consideration now and will be dependent upon a scientific survey. Although recreational cockle gathering is stopped each year, concerned residents have pushed hard to end shellfish harvesting for a longer period. The Cockle Bay community has filed a petition with Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross. Residents believe the beach should be closed for cockle gathering for at least several years.

School gets set for its golden jubilee There is a buzz of excitement as Elm Park School prepares for its Golden Jubilee celebrations. Principal Trish Plowright says that deputy principal Belinda Johnston, who is orchestrating the 50-year celebratory event on October 28, has been sieving through thousands of old photographs in school albums. Discovering quaint pictures from the time the school was first built in 1967, Ms Johnston has been posting them on the school Facebook page. “The history of our school was lost over the years which is why the jubilee organising committee has been trying to piece it together,” says Ms Johnston. They struck gold as they connected with the first deputy principal of the school Des Jack, now 90, who filled in some blanks with names and details.

November

Stop and give yourself a pat on the back - now is the time to take all your produce into the kitchen and create wonderful fresh meals, salads, desserts and cocktails for your family to enjoy! Nothing beats a fresh picked posy of flowers around the house, and lazing outside in the garden with the scents and sights of your efforts, it really is so rewarding!

New MP moves in

No doubt you will be busy harvesting your summer crops like tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, courgettes, eggplant, new potatoes and spring onions; pick every day to encourage continuous fruiting – especially peas, beans, eggplant, cucumbers and courgettes. Keep planting new lettuce and herbs regularly too, to ensure a consistent supply throughout the summer.

The signage is up and Simeon Brown’s new office is officially open for business. More than a month after he was elected as the MP for Pakuranga, Brown says he is happy to finally be settled into his new office. He is encouraging the community to get in touch for a “catch up or a cuppa” in his new space at 120a Pakuranga Road, the premises of former long-time Pakuranga MP Maurice Williamson.

In the flower garden, summer flowering annual and perennial plants can still be planted out into gardens and pots, but make sure that you are watering them regularly as they get established. If you are planning a trip away at this time arrange for a neighbour, friend or family member to water your garden while you are on holiday, or consider investing in a programmable water timer. Mulching around your plants can also reduce the need to water - it keeps roots cooler and can even help conserve up to 70 per cent of the available water. Your roses will be looking fantastic at this time of year, so just remember to keep dead heading regularly to encourage more blooms. Be vigilant for pest and disease, especially on the new growth and flower buds. Regular spraying with a combination fungicide/insecticide is a great idea, and for best results use Yates Ready To Use Rose Gun - a combination that targets common rose pest and diseases.

Kiwis bringing kids out of poverty

Huge win but battle not won The Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association (HRRA) is celebrating what it calls a huge victory for the Stockade Hill battle to save the views. “But people still need to put in submissions to ensure this battle is won,” said HRRA chair Gayleen Mackereth. “We are pleased council is heeding the public outcry and our petition for the protection of Stockade Hill Views, firstly with Plan Change 3 in August which created a new viewshaft protecting views from the top of Stockade Hill and now with the latest plan change.” Plan Change 4 rectifies the errors published on the GIS viewing maps on the council website allowing 18 metre Mixed Use commercial and apartment buildings “totally blocking the magnificent sea views as one enters Howick round Stockade Hill, and over-dominating the sweeping view of Howick and our historic Selwyn Church”.

O’Sullivan sets sights high

Talk about great expectations. Big things are expected of Dr Lance O’ Sullivan. Described as a passionate public health campaigner, the New Zealander of the Year 2014 is poised to be the new leader of the Maori Party for 2020. Many in the know predict that he will resurrect the Maori Party after it was wiped out in this year’s General Election. Dr O’ Sullivan has also been pipped to be a future Health Minister who will implement huge changes after the 2020 elections. Could he even become Prime Minister at the next General Elections? Given his fierce passion to eradicate poverty and bring about a dramatic change in the health sector coupled with leadership skills, expertise, charisma and a huge media presence – all point towards the making of a great leader. Not many are aware that the 45-year-old doctor from Kaitaia, who has collected plenty of awards including Champion of Public Health and Maori of the Year 2013, grew up in Highland Park.

Preparing for the future

In 1964, Ayrlies Garden was simply a large piece of land with a small cottage placed on it. Today, it sprawls across some four hectares of rolling terrain, with large lawns, ponds and waterfalls. The magnificence and scale of Ayrlies Garden is such that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Such is the sheer size and wonder of the gardens that it takes its toll and with owner Beverley McConnell now in her eighties, her son John McConnell says the focus is now on preserving the garden and wetlands for future generations. “We made the call that we wanted to keep the garden for as long as we can into the future,” he said.

More than 21 per cent of the population in Philippines live in extreme poverty, fighting dayby-day to survive illness and malnutrition in subhuman conditions. And every day generous New Zealanders are doing their bit to change that. Today 633 Filipino children are being nurtured, educated, developed and equipped by Kiwis through Tearfund’s Compassion sponsorship programme in the Philippines. “These children have grown up living on rubbish dumps, living in and around sewers, scrounging for food and clean water,” says Noel Pabiona.

Looking back at 2017 Howick is this month celebrating its 170th birthday — and it is inviting the community to join in. It is a prelude to massive 175th anniversary celebrations and organisers are looking for ideas and interested parties. Lead organiser, Howick Local Board’s Jim Donald, said the first order of business is a birthday lunch on Sunday November 19 at the Howick Club. “This 170th is the beginning of preparations for the 175th,” said Donald.

United Future to disband

United Future party leader Damian Light has announced the party will disband. Light, who stood as the party’s Botany candidate in the 2017 General Election, said in a press release the party is “extremely proud of what we’ve achieved over the past 15 years working alongside the government of the day, both National and Labour”. By August 2017, United Future had become the party with the longest continuous role in New Zealand government for 100 years.
