Vester bids farewell By FARIDA MASTER
At Edgewater College everyone cares about each other, says Principal Allan Vester who is ready to hang up his boots.
Times Photo Wayne Martin
Trial by fire aptly describes Allan Vester’s appointment as principal of Edgewater College 23 years ago. The entire Nelson Block was ablaze and he was called in to handle a major crisis even before he officially took over the hot seat at the principal’s office. “Technically I wasn’t the principal then but had to make some quick decision,” Mr Vester recollects as his long run as principal of Edgewater College draws to an end. “It was not the kind of start you anticipate,” he says. Anyone who has seen Mr Vester, 65, literally jump hoops whilst doing the sound and lighting for any of the college productions knows that he is not the sort who sits behind a desk. Known to roll up his sleeves and get jobs done, he readily helps a cluster of primary and intermediate schools in the area with the sound and lights at their events. Reflecting on his tenure as principal, he says that maintaining the roll of a low-decile school located in a high socio-economic area has been the biggest challenge over the years. ➤ Turn to Page 3

Medical staff alerted police to the girl’s injuries, describing them as being of varying stages and classically associated with nonaccidental injury, suggesting she had been deliberately harmed on a number of occasions. The infant was immediately taken into the care of Oranga Tamariki and police launched an investigation. While the child is expected to make a full
recovery, Detective Senior Sergeant Eddie Sutherland said last week that police were “extremely concerned” by the injuries and looking for anyone with information. The NZ Herald reported that the family of the girl “closed ranks” when they were questioned by police and refused to give information. The pair have since been remanded on bail and are next due to appear in the Manukau District Court later this month.

wo people have been charged in relation to a case in which a baby was beaten. The case involves a 4-month-old girl who was badly beaten and suffered significant injuries. The Howick infant had 16 fractures to her skull, arms and legs in what was believed to be a domestic violence incident. Last week a 28-year-old man was charged
with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and appeared in the Manukau District Court on Wednesday. A 30-year-old woman was charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice and appeared in court on Thursday. The infant was first admitted to Middlemore Hospital on February 18, after her family took her to the doctors and the child was referred on to the hospital.

ast Wednesday we attended one of the largest funerals to be held in Howick for a long time. The very sudden loss of young mother Belinda (Bindy) Jane Burns was a huge shock for all who knew the family. Belinda was the much-loved eldest daughter of Pip and the late Wes Burns who for many years owned Wes Burns Appliances in Howick. Since 1974, the year Belinda was born, I have known the family and my girls have played netball with both Belinda and her sister Bo. This loss was really personal to me and my family. The funeral was a magnificent send-off to Belinda with more than 700 people attending the ceremony at All Saints Anglican Church in Selwyn Road, Howick. It is so sad to attend a funeral where most of

the congregation are young. The haka that Matt, Belinda’s young brother, and others performed was haunting and a sign of huge respect as the hearse left the church. Belinda passed away sud-
denly at home on March 22. Her death notice said it all. Devoted and loving mum of her precious eight-year-old AnikaJane Aramanu, and step-mum of Kaira, Saskia, Lexie and Blake; cherished sister of Alistair, Grant, Bo, Matt and Selwyn; adored aunty of Lucy, Sophie, Charlie and Grayson; partner and friend of Paul and Matariki, and sorely missed by her many family and friends. Belinda attended Cockle Bay Primary and spent her senior years at Diocesan School for Girls. She played for Howick United Netball Club and was also a Counties Manukau netball representative. Belinda had a larger than life personality and a successful career in sales and marketing. As Bo put it in an earlier tribute: “We have no words, only an ocean of tears! The heartbreak is real, the reality is not.” ■■ Reay Neben is managing director of Times Newspapers

The Times last week reported that Harcourts Preet & Co had gone into administration. Administrators Meltzer Mason confirmed to the Times that it was shortly to file an administra-
tor’s report with the Companies Office. Preet & Co’s Botany offices had closed while the Howick and Pakuranga offices remained in business. A media report in January said an investigation had been launched into “abnormalities” in the trust account of Preet’s multi-agency group. About $1.7 million of trust account money is said to be involved, according to a person familiar with the situation, the NZ Herald reported. A Real Estate Agents Authority spokesperson told the Herald: “The REAA has completed its investigation into the abnormalities in the trust account of Preet & Co. The matter is now in the hands of the (Real Estate Agents Disciplinary Tribunal) tribunal.”

But for Peter Sund, new owner of Harcourts’ Howick and Pakuranga offices, property has been a life-long interest. “I have been involved in the buying and selling of property since I was 19,” Sund says, adding that his real estate knowledge and experience has grown alongside his naval career, and expanded since his retirement in 2006 after 20 years’ service. Sund is excited about bringing that expertise to the newlybranded Harcourts People First Real Estate Limited in Howick and Pakuranga, and enthusiastic about the opportunities that lie ahead. “There is huge scope to grow the business here, and really cement our place in the community. Howick and Pakuranga each have their own unique feel and their own communities, but they have many similarities also,” he said. “They’re both very family oriented and enjoy some great coastal locations, as well as great local amenities. “I’m really looking forward to helping our team work with people from all walks of life, so they can close the deal on their new properties in this area.” Harcourts CEO Chris Kennedy says he is thrilled to welcome Sund and People First to the Harcourts family. “I’m very optimis-

Bucket list of complaints By Farida Master
N
ot many residents are aware that Auckland Council is proposing a targeted rate of $67 per year to fund a food scrap collection once a week. It will mean a third small (bucket) bin to which will be collected every second week. According to Waste Management staff, the red lidded-bin which is for general waste will be checked and if food waste has been binned inside, a sticker would go on it and the bin will not be collected. The new bucket bins will be hand-picked and emptied into another contractor’s truck. A consultation summary of Draft Auckland Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2018 says: “Nearly half the weight of an average household rubbish bin is food. It generates unwanted greenhouse gases in
landfills and we think there’s a better way to manage it – by introducing a kerbside collection for food scraps across urban Auckland. “We can process food waste for useful purposes, such as making compost or generating energy. “We’ll also keep supporting initiatives to help you reduce the amount of food waste you produce, and to compost at home. “Over time, as weekly collections of food scraps remove the largest (and often smelliest) volume of waste from bins, we expect to be able to reduce refuse collection to a fortnightly service.” The bins have already been delivered to some areas of Papakura and have had residents complain of maggots and blow flies hanging around the bins. “If you forget to put the bin out one week, it will be two

weeks of blow flies. The light bucket bins also tend to be blown on the road,” says a resident. Some people have commented on social media about forgotten rubbish being dumped into parks and streams or into other people’s general waste bins. Auckland Councillor Sharon Stewart is disappointed that there has been no public consultation for the food waste bins. She says she has had calls from concerned residents asking about the small food waste bin. “People are having trouble finding any mention on the forms about the proposed targeted rate of $67,” she says. Mrs Stewart wants to make sure everyone has been consulted. “Elected councillors will be considering your feedback — this is just one of the questions being asked on the AK Have Your Say.”
No opt out of food scrap bins Parul Sood, Waste planning manager Auckland Council responds to queries about the new foods waste bins that will be shortly introduced with a targeted rate of $67. By Farida Master ■■ Does everyone have to have the bucket bin or is it optional? What about those who are composting the food waste in their backyards? Like with the household recycling bin service, people cannot ‘opt out’ of the food scrap collection – the service will be covered by rates in the areas it will be provided. The food scraps service will be provided to all households in the urban Auckland region. Aucklanders can choose whether or not they actually use the food bin. However, the average Auckland household rubbish bag/bin contains around 45 per cent food waste, so using the bin will significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. This will not only save residents money on rubbish disposal, but it will benefit the environment. The new food scraps service does not replace home composting. The food waste bin takes all types of food scraps including the ones that are not easily composted, such as meat, small bones and shellfish. The new food scraps service will also provide those households who currently are not able to home compost with a

service to reduce their waste to landfill and provide them with a means of recycling their food waste. Up to 75 per cent of composters would also use the service as part of a complementary system to managing a household’s food waste. Some items like meat, bones and seafood shells are tricky to compost at home but are more easily processed at commercial level because of the scale and types of equipment used. The council actively encourages residents to compost and have a number of schemes in place to support this. However, research indicates that a lot of people can’t or have not got the opportunity to compost, so the food scraps service gives everyone the opportunity to reduce their waste and do their bit for the environment. ■■ When will it be introduced in East Auckland? Auckland Council is aiming to progressively introduce a food scraps collection service across the region by 2021. As of last week, approximately 18,000 properties in Papakura began receiving the service. And we have got no complaints so far. Exact timelines for the implementation of this service
in other parts of Auckland have not yet been determined. ■■ Why is there no mention of the cost in Have your Say Auckland? The targeted rate is mentioned in Issue 3 of the 10-year Budget. ■■ Is it true that the red and yellow lid bins will be collected every second week and the red lid bin which is for general waste will be checked for food waste and fined accordingly? The rubbish collection service will continue to run weekly for the immediate future. However, over time, Aucklanders will not need to put their bins out every week. As weekly collections of food scraps remove the largest volume of waste from bins, we expect to be able to reduce refuse collection to a fortnightly service. Aucklanders can choose how often they want to have their bin emptied – only putting the bin out when it’s full can save residents money. There will be no changes to the fortnightly recycling service. To encourage residents to use the food scraps service and divert it from landfill, we do have bylaw provisions that prohibit food scraps to put in the refuse bin.

Z’s tough security drives offenders away By Farida Master
Z
Energy service stations have installed security systems costing up to $20 million. Mark Forsyth, general manager retail Z Energy, says that it is not only about installing fog cannons, but also about working on an environmental design that makes it safer for everyone involved. Fog cannons dispense fog so dense that the offenders cannot even see their own hands. Environmental designs mean no big trees to shield the outer view, bright led lighting and clean lines which make it possible to spot a dodgy character from a distance - even at 3am. Making sure that staff are safe behind glass doors are the steel bollards; high quality digital CCTV that helps police with facial recognition; a license plate recognition camera system that alerts those behind the counter, way before the person has stepped into the gas station. “There is a safe where all the cash goes in so there is no cash to steal. Two keys are required to open the safe and staff only have one. It means that people go to jail for stealing 40 bucks.” says Mr Forsyth.
Z Energy retailer Wayne Kennerley (left) with general manager retail Mark Forsyth.
Being a bigger organisation, Z Energy (203 sites) has invested millions in sophisticated hardware and software to create situational awareness and train staff. “A DNA spray just above the door can squirt the offender with a spray without them knowing about it. And you can’t wash it,” Mr Forsyth says. “The cops can use an infrared light on the suspect and it will reveal the location and time of offending.”
A steel cigarette dispensing machine behind the counter is also wired to the computer and makes it impossible to steal tobacco. “With all the security measures in place, staff members have more time to escape to a safe room that has a reinforced steel door. Once inside they can raise an alarm and press the button to the fog cannon,” says Wayne Kennerley, who operates multiple Z outlets in the area.
Times photo Farida Master
“We have to constantly think ahead and keep updating our security systems. All these measures have dramatically reduced the crime rate at our gas stations.” Judging by the number of recently-reported aggravated robberies at dairies in the Waikato, young offenders appear to have moved out of Auckland. Word on the street has it that a break-in at Z Energy is just not worth their trouble.
Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, April 5, 2018 — 5
Fog cannons could be answer By Farida Master Police are encouraging vulnerable shopkeepers and dairy owners to install fog cannons as a security measure to deter break-ins and aggravated robberies. “Fog cannons are an effective deterrent to offenders by releasing a dense, thick fog making it all but impossible to see,” says senior sergeant Michael Schmidt. The fog cannons activate very quickly and fill a retail premises within seconds, providing an effective prevention tool to increase the safety of retailers. The fog makes it difficult for offenders to get their bearings once activated and at the same time gives the retail staff enough time to retreat to a place of safety. Wanting to help shop keepers who have been repeatedly attacked, the Government has announced a package to subsidise fog cannons provided retailers meet the criteria based on a potential threat threshold— which takes into account factors such as vulnerability, whether the premises is subject to repeat victimisation, number of calls for service to police and whether premises are located on or near major roads and crime corridors. The high at-risk shop owners will pay only 10 per cent of the price of the fog cannon. The rest is subsidised by the police. While police are already working with retailers who have been identified as fitting the criteria, others have the option of self-referring to the scheme through contact with local police. “Shops and retailers are a significant part of the community and, as such, the community has a part to play in preventing robberies and thefts from stores,” says Sgt Schmidt. “The public are encouraged to contact police if they see a vehicle parked in a strange manner or anyone acting in a suspicious way as we need to work together to ensure the safety of everyone in our community,” he says.

Umupuia Beach clean-up H
ot on the heels of the Volvo Yacht Race crews cleaning an Auckland beach, a group of Hunua School students from Years 5-8 cleaned up Umupuia Beach. A representative from Sustainable Coastlines visited the school and addressed the issues the world is having with plastics and other rubbish affecting marine life, said Hunua School deputy principal Kris Burden. So on March 16 they headed to the beach on a mission. “When we first arrived, we looked at the beach and wondered why we were there, it looked spotless,” Mrs Burden said. “Two hours later we had collected six bags of rubbish … clothing, fabric, fishing line, hooks, food wrappers, and so much glass! We couldn’t believe how much rubbish there actually was, all having the potential to harm marine life or people.” Year 7 and 8 students also conducted a few experiments of their own. “There is a lot of discussion on the internet about the tiny pieces of plastic and plastic beads that contaminate the sand, so we wanted to know if Umupuia Beach was affected by this,” she

said. Students set up stations in four tidal zones. First of all, they collected any plastic they could see inside the hoops. Then it was time to test the sand itself. “We had seen an experiment where you place sand in a glass, added water and stirred. Every time, tiny pieces of plastic could be seen swirling in the water,” said Mrs Burden. “So we tried it for each of our four
stations. We tested each station five times. On each occasion no plastic was found, only small pieces of plant came to the surface. We wonder how typical this is in New Zealand beaches? “We were able to take one bag back to school so we could conduct an audit. While we categorised, sorted and counted the rubbish, we created artworks that really made us think of the impact it all has on planet earth.”
Playground commemorates Koro By FARIDA MASTER There was rain forecast but the sun is shining brightly and that’s because our Kaumatua Koro Percy is looking down at us from the skies and smiling at us, said Matua Tapu (Pou Tikanga o Te Whanau Rautoetoe) at the blessing ceremony of the new playground at Riverina School last Thursday. The school’s new playground, funded by various charities including the Lion Foundation and the Rae and Ernie Johnston Memorial Trust, has been dedicated to the memory of Kaumatua Koro Percy who passed away at the time

the funds were being raised for the playground. Mr Tapu, along with students, sprinkled sacred water from Mt Taranaki on the grounds of the playground. “The students have been waiting for a long time for the new playground to be officially opened,” said school principal Caroline Chawke. The ribbon was cut by Sylvie Wilkinson of Pakuranga Rotary and the Rae and Ernie Johnston Memorial Trust, after which all the students were treated to ice cream. Moments later, the kids were at play—making the most of the newly opened playground.
Education a key priority for National When Simon Bridges announced his National Party portfolio reshuffle, I was privileged to be selected as the new associate spokesperson for education. National has a formidable education team, with Nikki Kaye remaining our primary spokesperson, Deputy Leader Paula Bennett picking up tertiary education, Jo Hayes taking on Maori education, and Nicola Willis responsible for early childhood education. Last week, Nikki launched a petition asking the Government to improve the quality of school and parental reporting, in light of their decision to scrap National Standards. National believes that parents should be able to see how their kids are doing at school and that schools should be held accountable for lifting achievement, which was the key focus of this policy. As part of the last election we campaigned on a policy to widen the scope of National Standards to report across more of the curriculum. However, we recognised this would require a significant amount of time and investment and committed to retaining National Standards until we could adequately upgrade them. In scrapping National
Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga Standards without a replacement ready to take their place, Labour changed the National Administration Guidelines to remove the requirement for schools to report achievement information to the Ministry of Education. This means schools are now able to decide their own method of reporting, or indeed whether they even report to parents at all. This will result in confusion for parents who may want to see how their child is progressing both within their school and compared to the rest of the country, as there will no longer be a nationwide picture of achievement. The petition we have launched also calls for investment in online tools to ensure parents and teachers can have confidence in the data that’s being reported and have a greater frequency of reporting in the future. To sign the petition, visit nikkikaye.national.org. nz/school_and_parents_ reporting. Simeon Brown MP for Botany
Tiny house, big dreams for Bobbie
Bobbie Cornell’s tiny house was relocated from Waiheke Island to the Bay of Plenty.

The growing interest in tiny houses continues to capture the imagination. Architect/concept designer Bobbie Cornell, who went to school in Bucklands Beach, has embraced the tiny house movement – and its frustrations. She designed and built her own version on Waiheke Island and last Monday – after a couple of hiccups – had it shipped via ferry to Half Moon Bay. The trailer carrying the house is this week awaiting a driver for the final trip to the front yard of Bobbie’s place
in Tauranga. It is currently perched on her mum Mimi Hung’s property in Half Moon Bay. “The tiny house movement is gaining momentum, especially for younger generations who want to fight the housing /mortgage battle instead of being tied up with a 20-30 years of mortgage,” said Mimi. “She hopes to be debt-free in less than five years. Bobbie and friends are passionate about it, full marks for trying.”
This shot has Movenpick in the background - where Bobbie Cornell lived for a while when she was at Bucklands Beach Primary School, and her mum ran the corner dairy there. Photos supplied

As frequent users of the Lloyd Elsmore Park, we have been noticing the rubbish levels are just getting worse. The rubbish is just being left around the park and it is particularly bad around the skate park and BMX track. There are bins so please use them. As you already know, huge amounts of litter don’t make it to the bin. Almost 25,000kg of plastic waste is littered every day, according to Toko. This is a major problem and the litter is particularly bad around Lloyd Elsmore. By helping to fix the Lloyd Elsmore problem you can spare a few of the 100,000 animals that die each year. So we hope that you read to our letter and thank you to whoever is reading this. Please, stop littering at Lloyd Elsmore and around Pakuranga.

Hang on a minute Jim! Re Friends of Macleans Park (Times, March 12). I am writing in response to an article about Howick Local Board member Jim Donald’s proposal to form a group to be called ‘Friends of Macleans Park’. Garry Boles, member of the Howick Local Board, had been in discussion with me about whether Eastern Beach Action Network (EBAN) wished to change its name to Friends of Macleans Park. (Jim Donald will surely have known about this.) I advised Garry near the end of February that I would contact him after seeking the opinion of others. We were waiting for the return of a questionnaire from our members on the subject before making a decision. Eastern Beach Action Net-
work (EBAN) was established in 2002 when a group of residents came together to protect the park from a development that would have destroyed the recreation area at Eastern Beach (a development that Jim Donald supported). Since then, while we have remained a small group, we have continued to advocate for the park along with other matters affecting Eastern Beach. As an elected councillor in 1999, Jim Donald played a significant role in ensuring a major land swap between Macleans College and Macleans Park was heard by two Commissioners rather than the Hearings Committee. The land swap that followed was unnecessary and has been extremely damaging to Macleans Park. The visual nightmare in the photograph
I have attached to this letter is one of the problems resulting from that swap. It didn’t need to happen. At a Howick Local Board workshop in 2014 Jim gave his support for another land swap with the school, inevitably damaging to the park, but yet to go before the Howick Local Board. I cannot say whether Jim’s publicised desire to clear drains in Macleans Park is genuine or political gimmickry. I do however think he should have shown us the courtesy of waiting until he had heard whether or not we intended to change our name to Friends of Macleans Park before advertising a new group with that name.

New plan to manage erosion at Cockle Bay
STOCKTAKE CLEAR OUT UP TO
T
he Howick Local Board will fund $250,000 for urgent works at Cockle Bay Beach as part of a revised plan to repair coastal erosion. The revised plan is the result of input from local residents, concerned about wave reflection and sand loss at the popular beach. The funding will go towards repairing the damage caused by a storm, combined with king tides, which wreaked havoc on the coastline in January. Initially engineers recommended extending the seawall, but after meeting with the local board and residents, have revised the plan. “Residents told us they were concerned that extending the vertical sea wall would actually cause more wave reflection and lead to sand loss so wanted our engineers to rethink that,” says Auckland Council’s head of operational management and maintenance, Agnes McCormick. “They made some good points so we asked the engineers to have another look and what we plan to do now is enhance the existing wall and retain the temporary rock structure we put in place in January and to transfer sand from the eastern end of the beach to the area immediately to

this to restore public access and the look of the beach.” Howick Local Board chair David Collings understands the locals’ concerns and says it is great that council’s community facilities and coastal erosion teams have been able to address these. “The experts are telling us that the work is urgent, they made some temporary repairs in January but if we get another bout of weather like that there could be real problems.” “The real pleasing thing is that after some delay we are now able to get this addressed, have it fit in with the community expecta-

tions and most importantly, that it comes in under the original budget.” The local board has long maintained and advocated for a regional fund to manage coastal erosion but with no regional funding available, it has agreed to fund this work due to the urgency. At its meeting this week the board also noted that work at Mellons Bay Beach, which was also extensively damaged in the storm, will be funded out of a regional community facilities budget and were given an update on plans for Eastern and Bucklands Beach beaches.

PM misleads over fuel taxes The Prime Minister has repeatedly misled New Zealanders by claiming the previous Government was planning a 20 cent per litre fuel tax hike, as she has tried and failed to sell her Government’s transport plans, National’s Transport spokesperson JamiLee Ross says. “New Zealanders are about to be whacked by an increase of up to 25 cents a litre – or $15 every time they fill their cars. At the same time the Government is planning to gut regional roading funding so it can pump more cash into trams in Auckland. “Motorists and communities right around New Zealand are about to be hammered at the petrol pump – yet get fewer new roads – and the Prime Minister’s justification amounts to ‘Well the previous Government was going to charge 20 cents a litre more too’. “Well that’s bogus. The previous Government had committed to new roads right around New Zealand because the National Party understands how important they are to our regions. But while officials had recommended an increase to pay for some of them, we rejected that advice and committed to the projects under existing funding allocations. “We were very clear on that during the election – the same one where the Prime Minister also promised no new taxes. “The Prime Minister has also pointed to a 17 cent

ADVERTORIAL CP2268A
Memories at Waipuna Hotel & Conference Centre A sh Gera has cooked for Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Janet Jackson. But the newest chef at Waipuna Hotel isn’t fazed by his celebrity clientele.
“They’re just ordinary people,” he says nonchalantly. Ash began cooking around the age of 17, simply because with two working parents, it was “necessary to do so”. Born and raised in India, Ash was brought up with food being a very large part of life – and so enrolling in culinary school seemed a natural step, he says. “The word passion has been possibly overused...but I found my sanity around the cooking side of it,” says Ash, calling it his first love affair. His first job was in Dubai at what he calls a “playground for the rich and famous.” “I fell in love with the place, the process, [and] everything around that. “I could connect to the people and the cooking itself – the rush you get doing the service, the pressure, everything happening at once, everyone yelling [and] lots of pans clanging...it all gave me an exhilarating rush,” he said After two and a half years in Dubai, Ash discovered New

Zealand on a backpacking trip and instantly fell in love. “The first thing that came to mind was the pictures you draw when you’re little, the sun going down behind the mountains... that’s exactly what you could see in real life and I thought if you’re going to live somewhere, that’s the place to live.” Ash is now seven months into the job at Waipuna and says it’s the “feel good culture” of the social enterprise that makes it
so enjoyable. “I’ve got sous chefs who have been here for more than seven years, a restaurant manager [who has been here] 20 years, a banquet manager who has been here for a defining three decades, our baker has been here 24 years or so – it’s very unusual in the hospitality industry to retain people for so long.” He’s now looking forward to what’s on the horizon. “We are in the business of creating memories [and] what an incredible way to create memories,” he says. It could be as simple as the taste of fresh tomatoes that haven’t been chilled before or having a bottle of good single estate extra virgin olive oil as a staple in your kitchen cupboard - or delicious vinegar to season the final product. Be it the comfort of a slow braised meal on a cold day or exquisite truffles, every meal can be a lasting experience, he says. “It’s been a brilliant seven months and I’m sure there’s lots more to come.” ■ Head to Wellingtons Restaurant at Waipuna Hotel & Conference Centre, 58 Waipuna Road, Mt Wellington. Many offerings in April April begins with a multitude of events on offer as part of A Taste of UXBRIDGE, our annual open week. This year it is spanning 10 days and includes a collaborative artmaking workshop on Sunday April 8, Bright Ideas on Wednesday April 11 and a tour of Scott Eady’s exhibition on Friday April V. See the website for a full listing of activities. Later in the month, Unseen, Unknown: Unveiled, a new exhibition curated in partnership with COCA’s Alice Tyler, will be opening. Unseen looks at works by artists who reflect on things unnoticed and the obscured energies that play within the overlooked. Works by six artists come together to reveal different perspectives and expose new ways of seeing. Each artist takes a unique point of view, considering distinctive spiritual, environmental, emotional, or historical forces and explores how these influence our lives or physical world. Included is a work by Pamela Wolfe, a past resident of Howick, whose highly-detailed paintings of floral arrangements are well-known by many. These compositions are not simply a still-life exercise;
Seeker 2 (Kai) by Wanda Gillespie, on display as part of Unseen in April. Photo supplied
Wolfe includes wilting flowers to reflect a wider concern for the changing balance of our ecosystems, particularly the dwindling bee populations and the ongoing struggle to conserve the beauty of nature. Two large ‘paintings’ by recent Elam graduate Matilda Woods will also be on display. Woods has been investigating the layered utility of the ubiquitous woollen blanket in the context of her own and New Zealand’s history. Exploring issues related to domestic environments, family, gender, and race, Woods intervenes with paint on the blankets and by doing so questions the materiality of the object and offers the audience the opportunity to deliberate as to whether she is erasing or adding to its history. Please join us for the opening celebration of this exhibition on Saturday April 21 at 2.30pm. Zoe Hoeberigs Manager Curator Malcolm Smith Gallery

chats with a fledgling ‘warbird’ whose gift of the gab, no doubt, cracks up those on the ‘up and up!’ We also focus on a photographer who has seen parts of NZ most of us can only dream about and we highlight the amazing wood works of local artist, Jane Allnatt. We also talk with roller derby competitor, Holly ‘Golightly’ aka Brady and visit two enterprising women whose Akari range of natural skin care products is all about the benefits of coconut oil. Of course, there’s plenty more so be sure to pick up your free copy of the April edition. Copies are available from locations across the district – visit eastlife.co.nz for pickup sites. Hornets pave the way for women
After a brief stint in the 1990s, the Howick Hornets are entering a new era of women’s rugby league once again in a bid to get more girls involved in the sport By Tiffany Salmond
F
emale teams are the newest addition to the Howick Hornets club this year after a push from Auckland Rugby League to get more girls involved in the sport. Last year ARL created an under15 and under-17’s female grade to see whether it had potential. Thanks to the success of the competition they have decided to run it again with the addition of an under-13 girls grade. The new female grades have slightly different rules to the boys with 20 minutes each way and nine players on each team. Howick Hornets club captain Denie Allan says the club have always had girls playing in the junior teams alongside the boys, but once the girls reach the age of 12 they are no longer allowed to due to safety reasons.
“The whole idea of this is to get more girls playing. They will then eventually enter the women’s grades which will create a much greater competition for them in the future,” says Mr Allan He says when ARL presented the new concept to the club, everyone thought it was a fantastic idea. “Some of the best rugby league juniors we’ve had are all girls so it’s a real shame that they were not able to play anymore. “It seemed like a really good way to keep them in the game. It’s a logical pathway to follow,” says Mr Allen. Howick Hornets youth girls development officer Dean Diamond says he would love to see the girls teams become a permanent fixture at the club. “Eventually I would like to see Howick have a women’s side as well and a couple of feeder teams.

Howick Pakuranga miss out on podium
“It’s pretty hard at the moment as it’s in the middle of the touch and tag seasons so it has been difficult to get the girls to sign up at this stage,” says Mr Diamond. Auckland rugby league general manager Greg Whaiapu says getting more female players involved in rugby league is a key area of development for them. “We want to give young women in our game the best possible chance to develop their skills, while providing them with grades to ensure they can play right through from juniors to our senior women’s competition. “At last year’s Women’s Rugby League World Cup, 21 of the 24 players selected by the Kiwi Ferns came from the Auckland competition, and that’s something we want to build on going forward,” says Mr Whaiapu. TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”

Warriors deliver knockout R
ather than the knockout Joseph Parker hoped to deliver to Anthony Joshua’s ‘glass jaw’ in Cardiff, it was the Warriors NRL defeat of premier favourites Sydney Roosters that provided the past weekend’s sporting highlight. Four wins in a row to charge to the top of this year’s ladder compared with a string of losses to end a dismal 2017 speaks volumes for the smart infusion of some new blood to get the team’s heart pumping. What was most pleasing about the 30-6 Sydney result was not the tries scored but the magnificent defence on the Warriors goal line that restricted the Roosters to one. This without talented Shaun Johnson (groin), whose two late drop goals sunk the Canberra Raid-
ers, and defensive king pin Simon Mannering who has yet to start this season. With Mason Lino making a fine fist of standoff half, experienced Blake Green played a smart scum half’s game with probing kicks and long skip passes which team-mates hit at pace. It provided an interesting contrast to Johnson’s half pace lateral runs and passes that too often reach the hands of his mates at the same time as opposing tacklers. In fairness, Johnson can be a game breaker and his tackling has become more robust. But I want to see him return to his instinctive, elusive running game and let the clever Blake be the backline general.
With centre Peter Hiku and Solomone Kata running hard and captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck in devastating form, it was a pity powerful right wing David Fusitu’a didn’t receive more ball though he did score a corker from a towering Lino cross kick. With Tohu Harris and Adam Blair leading the forwards and Bunty Afoa running powerfully, the Warriors are reaping the benefits of the work put in by outstanding fitness and strength coach Alex Corvo. Meanwhile, while trainer Kevin Barry had cause to complain about the Italian referee prematurely breaking up the in fighting in Joseph Parker’s world heavyweight boxing clash against Anthony Joshua in Cardiff, no one could dis-
pute Joshua was a clear points winner before 80,000 fans. Nor do I give much credence to Barry’s claim that Parker should have thrown more double lefts. That’s okay if your feet are going forward too, but too many punches from both boxers fell short of their target. If 26-year-old Parker is ever to be given another crack at 6ft 6in Joshua, Barry will need to teach him to bob and weave a la Joe Frasier or Mike Tyson so that he can get in hitting range to deliver rips, hooks and uppercuts. While Joshua fought better in the thriller against Wladimir Klitschko, the Parker camp made a bad mistake in underestimating him. However the personable Parker did have
Agnew’s Angle the satisfaction of being the first fighter to go the distance with him in 21 fights. With a multi-million dollar purse to set him up for life, Parker should enjoy his consolation prize even though he is no longer unbeaten after 25. At 26, he will get better. So, too, will Joshua, who is just two years older. Meanwhile former Aucklander Ben Lam continues to star with four tries in the Hurricanes 50-19 Super Rugby demolition of the rejuvenated Rebels while the Blues scored six tries but let in six in their 63-40 loss to the Sharks. ■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author
Team drops in before Games The seven-member New Zealand squash team for the Commonwealth Games had a send-off at the Howick Squash Club in preparation for the Gold Coast. Howick Squash Club was chosen as the location because of its progressive nature and will be using i-squash to promote the sport to younger generations. I-squash is a new way of encouraging kids and adults to take part in the game. Squash NZ also wanted to
take the team to a club in a suburb rather than the regular Remuera Rackets Club or national squash centre, a club member said. The New Zealand team was able to mix and mingle with the enthusiastic crowd at the club. For coach and former Commonwealth Games medal winner Glen Wilson it was an opportunity to see some of the community where he lives. Wilson resides in east Auckalnd
area when he is in New Zealand. Stars of the send-off were the top Kiwi players Joelle King, now ranked No 4 in the world, and Paul Coll who is ranked ninth.
