embers of a local family are devastated after the ashes of their loved ones were stolen from the Paparoa Cemetery. A local woman Olivia Mitchell went to visit her grandfather’s grave last Tuesday evening only to find the bronze plaques of three of her

family members had been pried off and the ashes taken. She says while the plaques can be replaced, she is heartbroken that the ashes were taken as well and hopes they will be safely returned to her family. “Our whole family doesn’t know what to do and are pretty wound up to think someone could stoop so low and be so heartless,” Mitchell says.

“We thought we were possibly looking in the wrong spot but [we] found old photos of us near the missing plaques and the two spaces where my uncle, pop and nana [had been] were empty. “[I am] absolutely gutted especially because it would have been my pops’ birthday today,” she says. The family has filed a report with

the police who are investigating. They have also reached out to the Paparoa Cemetery maintenance team to see if they have any more information. Sr Sgt Peter Kaveney said police received a report that the family ashes and plaques were stolen sometime between October 2017 and June 19, 2018. ➤ Turn to Page 3

unning a major world marathon is a once-ina-lifetime opportunity many can only dream of. For Steve Millar, it’s a dream that is about to come true. In just a few short months, Steve will know what it feels like to cross the Central Park finish line in the New York City Marathon. He will join over 50,000 runners on November 4 to tick the world’s biggest marathon off his bucket list. But he will do it a little differently. Steve will partake in the marathon in a speciallydesigned wheelchair, pushed by his brother-in-law Phil Moon. On April 16, 2016 – aged just 40 – Steve suffered an extremely rare medical event, leaving him paralysed on the right side of his body and with limited verbal communication although he remains fully present in understanding what is going on in conversations. His wife Tina Millar says she remembers the day of Steve’s accident like it was yesterday. She says she has spent every day since making sure

Steve’s life is just as exciting as it has always been. “Steve has always been such an active bloke and I couldn’t just let every day be a repeat of the one before,” says Tina. With this in mind, she set out to come up with ways to allow Steve to be active, despite his accident. In 2017, Tina’s brother Phil Moon who is a marathon runner decided it would be great to have his brother-inlaw take part in a marathon. So they set to work organising and settled on the half marathon across the ditch in Sydney. “This year we wanted to go one better as Steve absolutely loved it,” she says. “We initially tried for London in March and got a place only to then be told sorry no athletes can be pushed, self propelled only. Disappointed we tried for New York.” To make the trip extra special, they are ticking a few other things off Steve’s bucket list. Tina, Steve and Tina’s father will head to America together and go to Disneyland, followed by a Route 66 road trip to New York City. They will meet Phil in New York in time for the mara-

thon. “I’m so proud of all he has achieved and that he is determined and driven. He has a big countdown calendar on his wall he crosses off every night and is so excited for this trip,” Tina says. They are now trying to raise $12,500 to get Steve and his team to New York and also to help Steve continue physio and pay for his race chair. Steve’s Fundraiser

Local resident Andrea Martin has put her hand up to help raise funds for Steve’s marathon trip and is hosting fundraiser on Saturday July 29. From 9.30am to 1.30pm a number of fitness classes will be held at the Howick Leisure Centre to raise money for Steve’s trip. The classes will be taken by some of east Auckland’s finest health and fitness experts and entry is $5 per person. . Powerhooping, pilates and self-defence are among the classes on offer. overall sense the proposal was considered to fit into the scale of development that is contemplated under the Auckland Unitary Plan – Operative in Part (AUP(OP)),” Mr Dowding wrote. “The AUP(OP) is, in part, a response for the need to accommodate the huge growth currently being experienced and further predicted for Auckland. In the last three-four years Auckland has had to accommodate population growth of approximately the size of Tauranga’s population.” The previous legacy District Plans did not have a strategy to deal with this type of growth. “Accordingly the AUP(OP) allows for outcomes quite different to what communities were used to in their suburbs, and what has been consented to at 4-6 Richard Avenue represents a type of development that can be achieved (subject to resource consent) across most parts of suburban Auckland under the AUP(OP). “This proposal is not unlike other developments that have been approved in the eastern surburbs. There will be quite a change in the face of Auckland between the current suburban built environment and that allowed by the AUP(OP).” While there was a widespread concern by residents in the Richards Ave area about this development, council was not in a position to change or cancel the granted resource consent. “I am of the opinion that council followed the correct procedures in assessing the proposal, including not requiring the application to be processed on a notified basis.”

concerns and hopefully shining a light on the need for public discussion with residents before intense developments such as that in a narrow street.” Resource consent, he said, was passed quickly late last year. “Our petition expressed disappointment at the absence of any notification or consultation with residents about a development of such intensity,” Cull said. “We found out about it once the real estate agent began to promote the 10 houses.” Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown said he will meet residents on Friday to discuss their concerns. “Richard Avenue has traffic and parking issues due to its proximity to a number of schools,” he said. “This development will put further pressure on this street and I am concerned that the council has not taken this into account in its consenting process. “I was disappointed by the

response residents received from Auckland Council, which essentially said they were hoping for the best when it came to addressing these potential issues.” There are no plans to deal with the extra vehicles that will now reside on Richard Avenue, he said, and with parking in the surrounding area at a premium, especially during school hours, it would make transport issues in the area even worse. “I am also interested to understand more about what notification was provided to residents of this development prior to the consent being granted.” Meanwhile a letter to Mr Cull from Auckland Council’s James Dowding (manager resource consents south) in April said the proposal was approved under delegated authority by council staff on December 20, 2017. “While I note that the proposal triggered a number of matters for resource consent, in an

Grandad’s ashes stolen ➤➤from page 1 “Clearly, this must be a distressing time for the family and we sympathise with them,” Kaveney says. “We appeal to the person or people who took the ashes and plaques to do the right thing and return them to the cemetery. “At the same time, if any scrap metal dealers come across the plaques, they should call police.” Catherine Moore, Auckland Council manager of Auckland cemeteries says they take all issues like this very seriously and have asked the family to get in contact so council can investigate further. This is not the first time vandals have targeted the Paparoa Cemetery. In 2016, around 20 memorial plaques were stolen in an act of vandalism, pried off with what was believed to be a crowbar. The urns containing the ashes of loved ones were left exposed before being temporarily removed by cemetery maintenance. ■■ If anyone has any knowledge of this incident, they can call 250 2800. ore than 30 residents in a small Bucklands Beach street are up in arms about a development which will see 10 properties built on two sections. The residents’ grievance follows a similar protest about a development in Struan Place in Highland Park (Times, June 14). Residents in Richard Avenue, Bucklands Beach, are so incensed that every resident but one signed a petition expressing concern about the intensity of the development in a narrow street that directly links Macleans College, Bucklands Beach Intermediate and Pigeon Mountain Primary. The petition, initiated by resident Lucy Ye, acknowledges that it is appropriate for the land on the two sections of 4 and 6 Richard Avenue to be developed. “However we are concerned about the scale and intensity of the proposal to construct 10 properties on the two sections.” Another resident, Nick Cull, said residents are “profoundly concerned” about the additional traffic movement and parking congestion that the development will produce by adding 10 households on just two properties. There were also a significant number of children moving up and down the street. Also worrying was stormwater management on this site and the implications of this on surrounding properties and the impact on Auckland’s environment. “We also wish to express our concern about the development’s infringement of height regulations, Mr Cull said. “We are signalling to you our

With gum boots and spades in hand, groups of Rotarians and the Chinese community got their hands dirty, planting saplings of pioneer and specimen plants at the Mangemangeroa Reserve. The tree planting initiative by the Rotary Club of Howick and the Rotary Club of Somerville had a huge representation from the Pakuranga Chinese Association, along with a group of exChinese military. More than 40 Air Cadets and Friends of Mangemangeroa Reserve also contributed to planting 1000 trees on Saturday morning. Also there was Mike Turinsky, of the Howick Local Board for Botany with Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga, and wife Rebecca working towards Phil Goff’s goal of planting one billion trees over 10 years. Rotarian Jim Duckworth, who has lived right next door since 1950, has been tree planting since 1999 when Friends Of Mangemangeroa was formally established. Last year they

Bucklands Beach Intermediate students planting at Mangemangeroa Reserve. Photos supplied

A real effort this year from the local schools has seen more than 2000 plants added to the reserve by school students. The boys from Bucklands Beach Intermediate were planting manuka but the school also planted flax. This group of students planted 600 plants near the Whitford Road corner. They were excellent planters and were using eco-sourced plants grown at Somerville Intermediate and pricked out by Cockle Bay. Overall a total of 4000 trees have been planted in 2018. Included in this total are over 200 larger canopy species such as taraire, totara, puriri, kohekohe and kowhai. These plants have been ecosourced from the reserve (their seeds were collected from Mangemangeroa). This effort has involved all ages from preschoolers holding plants while Dad digs the hole to the retired preparing plant protectors for the canopy species.

rices for a new apartment at Pine Harbour will start at $1.63 million. Plans to build apartments and commercial units at the site on Jack Lachlan Drive in Beachlands have been granted resource consent. Empire Capital Ltd, owners of the Marina, are behind the development, called L175, the approximate longitude of the site. Simon and Paula Herbert are the owners of Empire Capital whose interests include Pine Harbour Marina. The key features of the development include: ■ The four buildings would be three-storey in height and are proposed along the northern boundary of the site, directly fronting the southern edge of the 190 Jack Lachlan Drive, Beachlands ■ Each proposed building includes a ground floor consisting of commercial tenancies (adjacent to the marina) and garaged parking spaces (adjacent

to the private road), together with upper floors consisting of residential units (including balconies); ■ Each building would have a height of about 9 metres above ground level (which increases up to 11m for mechanical plants and lift shafts) and a depth of about 13m; ■ The four buildings would be separated from one another by about 6m, to provide for access, landscaped areas and view shafts between the marina and the pri-

vate road. In addition, each building will provide a 3m veranda overhanging the public walkway adjacent to the marina (which will also be upgraded as part of the development). David Boersen, Empire Capital’s development manager, told the Times they are selling the apartments ahead of commencement of construction for which no date has yet been fixed. The apartments range from 120-150sq m in area and all are accessed by lifts and stairs.

The apartments all come with secured garage parking. “The high quality of finishes throughout reflects the highly attractive and desirable waterside location,” Boersen said. “Designed to be north-facing, all apartments are either two or three bedroom with generous master bedrooms and open plan living that faces out to the water.” Prices start at $1.63m which includes the secure garage car parking. “For our berth holders we are slightly amending the car park layout,” said Boersen. “By using the existing car parking area more efficiently and by adding some further roadside car parking, we are able to provide our berth holders with the same number of car parks postdevelopment as pre-development – albeit in slightly different location. We believe the independent commissioner’s decision to grant the consent reflects the careful planning and thorough design process we went through in order to ensure the design was appropriate for the site.”

Government’s housing plan in disarray During the election, the Labour Party campaigned on a promise of building 100,000 new houses over the next 10 years in addition to what was already going to be built. It’s become clear over their first nine months in charge that this was purely meant as a headline-

grabber and was never properly thought out. KiwiBuild was first announced in 2012, so you would think Labour has had plenty of time to figure out the details and should have hit the ground running upon their election into government. So far though, all we’ve seen is

an endless plea for help from the private sector as Housing Minister Phil Twyford realises there’s simply no other way to fulfil his goal. Given the Government’s reliance on working groups and reviews, it should come as no surprise that they can’t sort this one out on their own either.

News bites We are the champions Elim Christian College have just won 7 Cups for first place and 7 runner-up places at the Combined Region Sports Camp for Years 7 and 8 held at Totara Springs. The week- long camp was the most successful sports camp to-date for Elim Christian College says Carol Pottow, assistant principal Botany Campus: “Champions in Netball, Hockey, Mixed Soccer, Girls Basketball (pictured above), Indoor Soccer, Shooting and Wallball.”

In A Flash A television drama called In A Flash telling the true story of the six Elim Christian College students and their teacher who tragically lost their lives in a flash flood at Mangatepopo Gorge in April of 2008 will screen on Sunday. Those who died were Natasha Bray, Portia McPhail, Tara Gregory, Tom Hsu, Anthony Mulder and Floyd Fernandes, plus teacher Tony McClean. It will screen at 8.30pm on TVNZ 1.

Recent reports suggest only 18 KiwiBuild homes are currently under construction and at this rate Labour won’t get anywhere near the 100,000 homes they’ve promised. When National left office last year, 200,000 new homes were forecast to be built over the next six years, but this progress is now at risk as the construction sector deals with the confusion caused

Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga by the new Government’s policies. In addition to Phil’s KiwiBuild pipedream, the Government’s plans to drastically limit foreign investment and immigration is beginning to stall construction.

akuranga College is hosting a group of Saudi Arabian educators, who are here to learn about world class New Zealand schools. Two principals along with two English language teachers are part of a contingent of 71 educators and have travelled with their families (more than 200 family members) to Auckland as part of the University of Auckland Khebrat School Immersion Project. Under the Khebrat (Arabic word for experience) project, Saudi Arabian educators are immersed in 21 schools across the Auckland region. Arriving in mid-January, their ninemonth programme began at The University of Auckland English Language Academy and now the project is being led collaboratively by several professional development organisations within the university. The programme is funded by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Education. Visiting English language teacher Ali Alwadai says their government has spent more than $40,000 on each teacher and paid an extra allowance to accommodate their families. Apart from minor hiccups like getting used to driving on the other side of the road, and arriving late on the first day of school for the special powhiri hosted in their honour at Pakuranga College, he says it’s been a huge learning experience. Ali observes that teachers in this country have the freedom “to choose the type of texts in curriculum and that there is a strong partnership between the teachers and the principal”. “There are 139 teachers at Pakuranga College and it will probably take me an entire year to meet all of them,” he laughs. “It’s fantastic that the schools are future-focussed here.” Bader Alslooli, principal of

King Fahed Secondary School, says that out of the 1200 educators that were given the opportunity to be part of the programme in nine countries, principals of schools were given a choice of just two countries New Zealand and Canada. While Bader found it a bit frustrating to find an apartment in the city, he is now focussing on the Capstone Project. “It’s like the final piece of the puzzle where we think critically to come up with a project idea on how we can contribute to our education system.” Talking about the difference in culture he says, “We come from the other side of the world and our culture is very different. We’ve attended workshops at the University of Auckland English Language Academy and have learnt different Kiwi expressions as well as had reflective sessions on things that are culturally appropriate. For example, you shouldn’t point at people when you are talking. It is considered rude here,” he shares.

English language teacher, Ahmed Jabbari from AlDhabya Secondary School had a lot to cope with as he arrived on January 18 in Auckland and his wife gave birth to a “Kiwi boy Yahya” on February 2. “We were quite worried about her giving birth in a foreign country but all’s well,” he says. Ahmed is impressed by the focus on students. “Their voices are heard and they play a great role in deciding on their learning paths. They have a vision of their future.” Principal of Jubai Bin Muteem High School, Adel Alahmari had a bit of an incident when a notso-happy seagull attacked the expensive drone he’d bought to capture the natural beauty of New Zealand. He says the immersion programme is a valuable learning experience. “In Saudi Arabia the Ministry of Education makes all the decisions. This programme has given us a lot of ideas on how we can contribute to our education system.”

Operatunity’s Daytime Concert was absolutely entertaining.

Times photos Farida Master

‘It’s one of the best in series’ By Farida Master From rock n’ roll love triangles to soulful music and parodies, the Shake Rattle & Roll Operatunity Daytime Concert at St Columba Church on Tuesday was one of the best in the concert series. There was hardly anyone in the audience that wasn’t swaying to the music, shaking or tapping their feet as the vocalists and musicians did

their thing. Pop royalty Suzanne Lynch part of the iconic Kiwi duo The Chicks was quite the star as she paired up with rock star Pat Urlich (how does he move those hips and legs?), and Operatunity’s favourites Karl Perigo and Bonaventure AllanMoetaua—together the heady combination made perfect music. Accompanying them were highly talented and seasoned

musicians Ron Coleman, Bruce French and Ray Eade. Eye-catching costumes, entertaining banter and great timing on stage had the audience high on melodies with some of the all-time favourites from the 60s. With greatest hits from Elvis Presley, Bill Hayley and the Comets, Bobby Day, Shelley Fabares, Fats Domino and more, the audience couldn’t help but shake, rattle and roll with the music!

Great work team

I would like to pass on a huge congratulations to the people responsible for repairing the Mangemangeroa Reserve Walkway. They’ve done a fantastic job in making this accessible once again. We are so lucky to have a gem like this on our doorstep.

Look at our stream

After neighbours taking time and effort to create a stream environment to encourage wildlife and a working ecosystem, it is very disheartening to see the roughshod approach that the council has taken in its maintenance of this waterway. This maintenance takes no consideration of efforts made to beautify nor the establishment

Instead of treating this water as an ecosystem, its treatment appeared to treat the stream simply as a culvert. How disappointing.

■ Council responds: This is urgent emergency work that we are carrying out following a flooding event over Queen’s Birthday weekend, which was significant in this catchment. The stream blocked due to earth erosion and a collapsed retaining wall. We received several flooding

complaints and health and safety concerns from residents in the area. At this stage the works are focusing on clearing and restoring the flood flow passage and the associated downstream walkway culvert upgrade works. As part of this, the popular school walkway is currently closed until our work is completed. Normally we would not carry out these works during winter, however in this case it is required to prevent further flooding.

Winter is here, the air is crisp, and layers are a must. So if you’ve been suffering from painful varicose and unsightly spider veins, there’s no better time to get them treated using sclerotherapy or laser at Skinsite. Veteran dermoscopist and dermatologic surgeon, Dr Anthony Tam of Skinsite, says getting your veins treated in winter will not only give your more energy and alleviate aching or pain, but come summertime you’ll be shorts weather ready. Skinsite offers ultrasound guided sclerotherapy where problem veins are found and injected with a solution which irritates the vein wall and forms scar tissue. . Within time the scar tissue is absorbed by the body and the veins disappear, Dr Tam says. “I have patients often asking about what permanent treatments are out there for painful and unsightly veins, and with new technology we now have a straightforward treatment for many types of veins,” he says.

Flat Bush 7 – it’s all about sharing By Farida Master

F

or the first time principals of seven different schools in Flat Bush came together along with around 250 teachers and 95 support staff to share their knowledge and resources. They met at Ormiston Junior College on recently. Unlike most schools in a zone that are naturally competitive, Flat Bush 7 is an initiative focussed on collaboration to promote the local community of teachers, children and patents. Self-funded by principals of Mission Heights Junior College, Mission Heights Primary, Ormiston Senior College, Ormiston Junior College, Ormiston Primary School, Baverstock Oaks School and the still-to-open in 2019 Te Uho o te Nikau Primary School — there is no government funding involved. Instead, the local principals put aside money from their learning budgets to harness the power of collective intelligence. together to share creative practices and a progressive educational pathway in the community,” he says. “There is no competition here. When we started we understood what we

wanted in this area and we are all working towards that realisation.” He gives credit to Mary Wilson, former principal of Baverstock Oaks for encouraging collaboration in the fast developing area of Flat Bush. Veena Vohra, principal of Mission Heights Primary School, points out that Baverstock Oaks was the very first school which was part of the development of Flat Bush. “We have always been individual islands of excellence in each school with a lot of personal learning. So this is a great way for the staff to share the best practises and avail of the expertise we have in the community. “This also makes the transition from primary to senior college very easy for children and parents. We can even personally refer parents to go and see a particular person in another school.” The break out themes for the day were creative practice in schools, culturally responsive practice, student well being and building resilience, collaborative practice and curriculum connections, round table –strategic networking between schools. Heath McNeil, principal of Ormiston Primary, says there has been a history of a unique partnership with each of the new schools being initially hosted in other Flat Bush schools until they were formally established. Luke Sumich, principal of Ormiston Junior College, says they are building on initiatives like a collective scholarship of $1000 for Year 13 students who have excelled. “It’s about creating trust,” says Diana Patience, principal of Ormiston Senior College. “We are the only area in NZ with two junior colleges and one senior college and we want to educate the community about this model by demonstrating that by working closely together we are providing a seamless and legitimate pathway for all children, which normally doesn’t happen.” “Genee Crowley, the newly-appointed principal of Baverstock Oaks School, says she feels privileged to be a part of a community of schools that supports and helps each other. Mel Bland, principal of Te Uho o te Nikau Primary School, agrees saying she feels very lucky to be a part of a community of experienced principals who are mentors with a shared vision.

Keeping Sir Ed’s legacy alive Students help Nepal on the 65th anniversary of Sir Ed Hillary’s ascent of Everest

Mission Heights Junior College Year 9 Mountains Whanau students commemorated the 65th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary’s historic ascent of Everest by raising funds to help the people of Nepal. Students raised more than $1600 with bake sales, food stalls, games, and a challenge to run 8848m (the height of Everest) in less than two hours. The funds will help the work of the Himalayan Trust, founded by Sir Edmund Hillary in the 1960s to improve life for the people who made his adventures in the Himalayas possible. Global Studies teacher Miriam Martin Ortega said: “The students have been learning about Sir Ed and his inspirational achievements. One of the cornerstones of our school life is ‘leadership through service’, which is something Sir Ed demonstrated. “We are very proud to be able to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the summit of Everest in this way and to know we are helping to improve lives in Nepal, one of the poorest countries in the world.”

Legacy award for facing adversity By Farida Master

T

hey are victors of circumstances and not victims. That was the message resonated at a well-orchestrated evening hosted by the Inner Wheel Club of Howick at The Lounge in Howick. The highlight of the evening was a newly established `Leaving a Legacy, Dawn Johnston Koru Award’ presented to an inspirational couple Alan and Delwyn Breslau of the Burns Support Charitable Trust who have dedicated their lives helping burn victims globally. Being no stranger to adversity herself, Dawn - who instituted the award - was diagnosed with a congenital disorder with led to the spontaneous dislocation of the patellas in both knees. This hindered her walking which later led to bullying at school. Last year Dawn had a death scare as she was diagnosed with cancer. Wanting to leave a legacy behind, both Dawn, who has dedicated her life to volunteering, and her husband Del, a Rotarian of 45 years, were motivated to establish an award based on the Inner Wheel theme for 2017/18 year-‘Leave a Legacy’. “We wanted to provide some means by which the principals that have motivated me through my life, could continue,” says

Dawn and Del Johnston with Alan and Delwyn Breslau winners of the Inner Wheel Club of Howick, Dawn Johnston Koru Award. Photo Farida Master

Dawn, a foundation member of Zonta East Auckland and the Inner Wheel Club of Howick “My life has been full of challenges and this award pays tribute to a resident of Howick, Pakuranga and Botany who has overcome obstacles and turned a tragedy into a positively inspirational experience,” she says. Alan and Delwyn were completely taken aback when their names were announced at the Inner Wheel event that also marked the change of presidents for the year. For a 92-year-old who has been proclaimed dead twice and undergone more than 70 surgeries since surviving a plane crash —Alan is in great spirits. A former chemical engineer on a business trip, he was hor-

The Phoenix Society provides educational as well as peer support and hosts the World Burn Congress is named after the mythological bird that burns up in its nest and rises reborn. His wife Delwyn asked if she could have a copy of the speech as her husband’s hearing aid battery had gone flat and they didn’t have a spare on them. “The Koru that signifies new life is very special to me,” she said, accepting the award. Dewlyn, whose son also suffered serious burns when he was eight, met Alan at the Phoenix World Burn Congress and was inspired by the work he did. The couple is currently planning a trip to the US for the next Congress in September. “The Congress started with around 20 survivors but now we have around a 1000 turn up and they all look so happy. It is the largest gathering of burn survivors in the world that look forward to building a new life.” It is their chance to connect with others on the journey of recovery from a burn injury. “You will see people with no arms and legs but with big smiles on their faces at the Congress,”she says.

Were Fencibles settlers or soldiers? Historian Alan la Roche continues his series marking the area’s 170th anniversary this year

A

fter 20 years as front-line soldiers for the British Army in Afghanistan, India, or China, once they reached 40 years of age they were dismissed as too old to perform military duties. But retiring to Ireland during the Great Potato Famine or the unhealthy English Midlands’ industrial towns was not attractive. When they saw an advertisement in military barracks, many immediately enrolled for a free passage with food provided to New Zealand for their wives and families, with a two-roomed cottage ready on arrival on an acre of land that would soon be theirs, along with a church and school. Many Auckland newspapers debated - were Fencibles, soldiers or settlers? Generally they were seen as “old settlers”. Governor Sir George Grey, asked Earl Grey, formerly Lord Howick, as Minister of War and the Colonies, for 2500 soldiers to protect New Zealand. Earl Grey wanted a cheaper option which was to send about 500 old battleweary soldiers who could act in an emergency but New Zealand needed settlers to secure the country as British. Howick Fencibles saw no military action. They were a low-cost part-time Home Guard. After seven years

ANNIVERSARY from leaving their homes in Britain , the cottage and acre of land became theirs and they became full-time settlers. The 12 days military service “training” was seen as a waste of time, an unpaid nuisance. One Fencible missed one parade and was sent to prison for four months hard labour under the Mutiny and Articles of War Act. After working a 60 hour, six day working week (building roads) a military-enforced muster-parade and inspection at the site of today’s Prospect of Howick Hotel, they then marched to the Anglican or Catholic Church, where their wives and children were expected to attend. This took most of Sunday mornings and was grudgingly performed. About 50 Howick Fencibles failed to attend twice, then their cottage and acre was confiscated and passage money for him and his family, over 30 pounds, was taken out of his pension. Most had no savings. Some

became destitute due to these harsh regulations. To complain could result in corporal punishment such as flogging. Officers were of a different class. They were much younger than the Fencibles. They were well paid, had a large two-storey homestead with servants, on at least 40 acres of prime land. Captains received three hundred pounds wages per year. They could sell their homestead and farmland after their seven year term of service. Fencibles had to wear their uniforms every Sunday. It was dark navy-blue with scarlet-red collar, cuffs and epaulettes and a stripe down their trousers. Their senior officer described the uniform “as simple, serviceable and soldier-like”. The uniform was nothing like a regular soldier’s uniform in Britain. The Fencibles uniform in New Zealand was similar to a policeman or fireman uniform. SMost authorities considered Fencibles as settlers who could possibly assist with Home Guard like activities if required. They were not required. But they were the founding pioneer families of Howick. Alan La Roche Howick historian

ust 617 caps among the 23 players compared to 1339 from the team that won the 2015 World Cup and last Saturday night’s All Blacks capped a threetest whitewash with a 49-14 triumph under the roof in Dunedin. Yes the French did get some shocking calls once more from the referee and the TMO and proved to be very competitive for 40 to 50 minutes. But when the All Blacks cut loose, their fast, slick attack was far too good. Lock Scott Barrett put to rest fears they would continue to miss the injured Brodie Retallick with easily his best performance in the black jersey. Like Retallick and the late Sir Colin Meads long before him, he was in everything; a dynamic force that tormented the tourists throughout. There was also more reward than risk from mercurial Damian McKenzie, the featherweight first-five who punches like a heavyweight with his lightning thrusts that often lead to tries. He scored two himself, albeit with the help of a referee who blocked a would-be tackler, and his setting up of one of Rieko Ioane’s three was pure magic and exquisite timing. If a few little errors stopped McKenzie from getting the perfect 10 Ioane and Barrett deserved, his sharp attack and flawless goal-kicking earned him a 9. It’s also difficult to fault speed-

ster Ioane who is excelling on the wing after being tried at secondfive and centre earlier in the season by Blues coach Tana Umaga. My concern about injuryprone Sonny Bill Williams getting a start after such long break proved unjustified with the big man gelling nicely with McKenzie before he was sidelined with an AC joint shoulder injury that will keep him out for three weeks. With so many good midfield backs to choose from, including the versatile Jordie Barrett, the selectors won’t sweat too much over his absence. But they will be delighted with the progress made by McKenzie and Scott Barrett with the latter’s mobility suggesting he’s just as capable of playing in the No 6 and 8 jerseys. just as his father, Kevin, was. Certainly Scott has more to offer at 6 and 8 than Luke White-

lock whose forte is his defence and high work rate rather than his ponderous attack. That is also true of the lively Liam Squire when he is injuryfree. Selectors Steve Hansen, Ian Foster and Grant Fox will also have noted their team gained more ball from the breakdowns when clever technician Matt Todd replaced the athletic Ardie Savea at openside flanker. While a bad referee’s call tainted the second test when France was reduced to 14 men for much of the match, the margin of the home team’s wins in the first and third highlighted their superiority. That they could achieve it without the world class Read and Dane Coles said much for the depth of talent they can choose from. Coles’ replacement hooker Codie Taylor was, in fact, the outstanding first test player. While England may have saved coach Eddie Jones’ head from the chopping block with their third test win, South Africa deserved to win the series 2-1, just as Ireland did against Australia, albeit with the help of Israel Folau’s unfortunate yellow card when he collided in the air with Peter O’Mahony who retired injured. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author

DINING & ENTERTAINMENT ADVERTORIAL JH14055

Let’s join the party at The Franklin I t’s The Franklins’ first birthday on June 30 and you are all invited to the party. Starting from 5pm onwards, there will be a fiesta at the popular Taphouse located at the Pohutukawa Shopping Centre (near Countdown) that you wouldn’t want to miss. Co-owned by the same people who own the stunning casual dining venues Grangers and Marina Cantina at Half Moon Bay, The Franklin’s first birthday party is going to be a takeover party by Marina Cantina. It’s going to be a fun-filled night with a Mexican twist. To quench your thirst there will be a Margarita slushy machine pouring out luscious Black Dorris Plum Margaritas. The Marina cantina’s menu of hot favourites like popcorn chicken tacos and Cantina loaded fries with mouth-watering waffle fries covered in pulled pork and cheese curds and cinnamon dusted churros will be served. There will be salsa dancing through the night with DJs playing late into the night. Spot prizes for the best dressed will be given out... so maybe your gun wielding Mexican costume may win you a special prize. Also, look out for the Winter Fest on August 11. Make a note of it in your social calendar as White Chapel Jak-an acoustic band of amazing musi-

cians who have played all over New Zealand will be back to wow the audience in Beachlands along with other rock bands that will entertain at the Winter Fest. And with the exciting Rugby season already kicking off, The Franklin offers an amazing atmosphere to watch the games on the big screens. The sunny winter days are always good to drive over and check out Beachlands and check out the $15 week day express lunch. And on not so sunny days, the delicious wood fired pizzas on the weekends can keep the hearts and palettes warm. For those who enjoy a perfectly crafted brew there is a great range of Tap Beer – also a guest tap which changes with Craft beer for every taste palate. Locally sourced wines from local producers around Clevedon are also served. A landmark venue at Beachlands, The Franklin is a perfect venue for epic parties and celebrations. Art award for ecology I

t’s the only contemporary art prize in New Zealand with ecology at its core. Each year, the Estuary Art and Ecology Prize brings together artworks by local artists who have responded to the concerns of the estuary, highlighting the diversity and beauty of the environment as well as the need to look after it. The total prize pool is around $8300. The criteria for judging is sectioned in two parts conceptual engagement in which artists are invited to research and respond to the Tamaki Estuary, to underscore the ecological value of the waterway and encourage action against its pollution. It is also judged on artistic merit focussing on artworks that are intelligent and innovative to responses to ecology, and excel in the field of contemporary art practice. The top 20 are selected for the finalists’ exhibition. The artworks are delivered to Malcolm Smith Gallery over the next few weeks and installed for the second round of judging, held just prior to the awards presentation on July 7. The finalists announced earlier this week are Amanda Watson Green, Anne Yang, Brendan Kitto, Caroline Burton, Celia Walker, Gillian Green, James Wylie, Jana Wood, Jim Wheeler, John Johnston, Katy Metcalf, Kiran McKinnon, Marion Wassenaar, Michelle Farrell, Mish O’Neill, Reece King, Roma Anderson, Rozana Lee and Wei Lun Ha. and Culture, says that this year Paul Brobbel, senior curator and Len Lye Curator at the Govett Brewster Gallery Len Lye Centre, is a judge. “He grew up in Howick so it is a treat to have him back at home for the awards.” Paul, who went to Elm Park Primary, Bucklands Beach Intermediate and Macleans College, says: “Contemporary art wasn’t something I was aware of until I left high school. Studying art at high school towards further study was restricted to kids who can draw so I found my way to contemporary art through studying history and museology at Auckland University,” he says. He’s been associated with the Museum of NZ Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington, and with the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre, New Plymouth since. “The invite to judge the Estuary Awards was a welcome opportunity to think about contemporary art in my home town, something I’ve rarely had the chance to do. “Having spent nearly my entire career away from home it was interesting to bring the two things together for the first time and think about my home from an environmental perspective,” he says. “Looking at the art works submitted, it wasn’t easy selecting a top-20 as there was a very consistent quality - which points to the strength of the awards themselves, having run successfully over the years. “But there several that really hit a high note and I’m looking forward to seeing them installed for the final judging.” ■■ First place: $5000, Second place: $2000 – both donated by Howick Local Board. There are also two Merit Awards: a $150 Gordon Harris Gift Voucher. The People’s Choice Award of $1000 was donated by the Rice Family Partnership.

Proposals for KiwiBuild off-site factories sought T

he Government will invite companies to express their interest in setting up or expanding off-site manufacturing factories to make KiwiBuild homes, Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford announced at the weekend. “Cabinet has decided the Government will seek interest from both local and overseas companies to come forward with their plans,” Twyford says. One of the challenges for KiwiBuild is there isn’t the scale and capacity in the construction sector to build the number of houses New Zealand needs. “Since KiwiBuild launched in November, we’ve been approached by a number of highly capable international and domestic companies who are already using innovative methods such as off-site manufacturing to build quality houses quicker and more efficiently,” he said. “High-tech manufacturing of homes, as is done in Europe and North America, could allow us to build KiwiBuild homes at scale and pace.” Off-site manufacturing is significantly more productive so more homes can be built from the available workforce, he said. “It will help address some of the constraints the construction sector faces until we can train enough local builders. Innovative new products used in off-site manufacturing such as crosslaminated timber can dramatically speed up the time it takes to build houses – an estimated two to four times faster. “Housing NZ’s use of locallysourced and manufactured crosslaminated timber has resulted in their houses being built in four to five months instead of 14-18 months,” Twyford said. “PrefabNZ said earlier this year that off-site factory-built houses and apartments could see more than 7000 additional homes build every year from 2020. “Ultimately, this could mean we see large-scale factories established in New Zealand, working alongside existing off-site manufacturing companies and creating more jobs, more skills and more houses.

“Off-site manufacturing will be a game changer for New Zealand housing.” However National’s Housing and Urban Development spokesperson Judith Collins said Twyford has thrown in the towel on his promise his Government would build 100,000 houses with yet another plea to the private sector for help. “Mr Twyford’s announcement today (Saturday) that he would ‘invite companies to express their interest in setting up or expanding off-site manufacturing factories’ for houses is nothing more than another idea on the never-never, and another admission he can’t deliver on his promises. “It’s not that pre-fabrication is a bad idea, and National supports efforts to build more houses. “But KiwiBuild was first announced in 2012. Now six years later and after eight months in Government his grand plan amounts to a plea to the private sector to bail him out at some point down the track.” She said after six years and eight months Twyford couldn’t answer basic questions like how the industry would be funded, how the industry and buyers would get around bank lending restrictions, how he would

free up land to build houses on and how he would get around his Government’s immigration chaos to find the construction workforce needed. “His only hope is that the private sector he has so consistently disparaged will have the answers. Given this Government’s reliance

on reviews and working groups – more than 120 and counting - that’s not surprising,” said Collins. “Mr Twyford has spent years claiming he would build 100,000 affordable houses for New Zealanders, no ifs or buts. Now his KiwiBuild pipedream has descended into farce.”

The week long ‘live-in’ intensive takes place in the holidays after term three. From this group of 48 students, 24 are then chosen to form the SGCNZ Young Shakespeare Company, which travels to the Globe in 2019. Former BDSC students Pippa Neels, the first Head Girl of the school, currently works in theatre production in the UK, and recent BDSC graduate Kaitlin Mahar were both NSSP performers and Kaitlin Mahar , NSSP

HOWICK PRIMARY SCHOOL Inspiring confident life long learners

Howick Primary School is very focused on ensuring students transition successfully from their Early Childhood Education into the Primary School setting. While acknowledging our children come from a wide variety of pre-schools who support an effective move to school, we believe that the opportunity to come and “try before you buy” is a great way to ensure a smooth entry into the school. Sunflowers is our special programme, which operates on a Friday morning with the New Entrant teacher setting up the room so visiting children and their parents can come and experience the classroom for up to four sessions prior to starting. At the start, “visitors” sit together with the rest of the students on the mat and quickly become part of the class as the teacher includes them in an activity. When the time

comes the morning break, they join the established students eating morning tea and playing on the brand new playground. The session ends when the bell rings at 11am and everybody returns to class. Sunflowers has enabled our newest students to settle quickly and without the usual angst of leaving Mum or Dad as they already know what they will be doing and where they are going when they start proper “big school”. We have noiced a big difference between the children who have the benefit of Sunflowers and those who arrive and start school immediately. As we don’t have an enrolment zone, anybody is welcome to attend Howick Primary School. If you want to give your child the best start possible, enrol them at Howick Primary School for the most important journey of their young years, starting with Sunflowers. Head students’ blueprint for success T

ear 13 student Danny Mackenzie represented Elim Christian College in the NZ Secondary Schools Football team that toured the US recently. Danny, who plays for the Bucklands Beach Men’s First team says: “The New Zealand Secondary Schools Football Team—National U19 Representative team, I travelled with played six games. We won three, lost two and drew one. “It was quite an outstanding

tour when you think about the pool of players the universities such as San Jose State and clubs such as the LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes have access too. “Just goes to show that a small size school such as Elim can produce students of qualities that can compete against the rest of the world.” Danny is currently applying for a scholarship to US universities. “On a personal note I hope that this is just the begin-

ning and I will keep pushing and make my way up in this world through football,” he said. “God inspired me on this tour and opened my eyes to see the opportunities of pursuing football in America, one of the biggest growing football nations in the world. “I hope to apply for a football scholarship in the States for next year and hope to wear the fern on my chest again in the future.”

he opportunities at Howick College can set you up for life, Head Girl Inka Pleiss told the prospective students who toured the school recently at the open night. This sentiment was echoed by Head Boy Nathan Limm, who said the range of opportunities offered ensure there was something for everyone, no matter what their interests. These range from clubs, sports teams, service groups, performances and leadership opportunities. “I was introduced to the Pinnacle Leadership programme through the school. It allowed me to go on the Spirit of Adventure, Outward Bound and helped to break down my goals and make them achievable.” Both Inka and Nathan assured the young students that starting high school wasn’t as bad as they had initially thought. They remembered feeling nervous about the new bigger environment and expectations, however

with the support systems in place, and help from teachers and older students alike, ensure new students settle in quickly. Inka says “We don’t dump you in the deep end, we ease you in at the pace you’re comfortable with.” As Year 13 students who will be moving on at the end of the year, Inka and Nathan will be joining a long list of former Howick College students who continue to succeed and achieve. The school is proud to claim well-known names such as TVNZ political reporter Jessica Mutch, Silver Ferns cap-

tain Katrina Grant and Black Cap Mitch McClenaghan. Each year the school delights in hearing of the many alumni who graduate with degrees, Masters and PHDs as well as those who gain success and contribute in the various fields they enter. Inka passed on some words of wisdom “You can do anything with your life, all you have to do is discover your passion. Our school motto is ‘Inspiring a community of passionate learners – allow us to inspire you to find your passion.” The school’s three guiding values of Community, Commitment and Citizenship are an important factor in helping students achieve success. Nathan believes adhering to these values, combined with the multitude of opportunities and support from the school provide the blueprint for everyone to grow and reach their potential. Education Top marks for Trinity kindy

FOR ALL AGES

A

recent Government education review of Trinity Kindergarten has resulted in the highest of praise for the early childhood education provider. The kindy, a non-profit organisation based on the grounds of the Trinity Methodist Church on Pakuranga Road, received full marks from the Education Review Office (ERO) report this month. The report reccomended the centre is “very well placed” and will not need another review for four years, the longest time between ERO visits an early childhood centre can receive. In the report it states “children experience a very calm and settled” environment with access to resources that “reflect and support their curiosty and interests”, and as a result “children have a strong sense of belonging and security … they play happily and are kind to each other”. Head teacher Engela Nel says the four-year review status was something she and the staff had been working towards and aiming for. “Trinity is extremely proud of its ERO report, our focus is our tamariki and we delight in

learning approaches that cater for individual strengths, interests Photo supplied and needs of children.

seeing each and every child develop into an educated and confident individual,” she says. “Through this four year experience, not only have the children and their learning outcomes reached their full potential, but the teachers have grown in team spirit and in their own learning.” Trinity is licensed for 40 children over two years of age and currently offers two morning sessions each week for younger children and three school-hour sessions for older children. The centre’s philosophy promotes Christian values and learning approaches that cater for individual strengths, interests and needs of children. It highlights the importance of parent involvement

in children’s learning. Board member Candice Thum has had two children, now both school-aged, attend the kindy and says the centre provided excellent foundation for her children to be school ready. “For parents, the transition to school can be daunting, but both of my children made the transition really well. I think a lot of that is due to Trinity and the way it helped my children find their independence, confidence and place not only in the world, but in a learning environment,” Thum says. “My children still love Trinity and they often come back and read or share learnings with the older children.” Visit www.trinitykindy. co.nz or call Candice 021 633 364 for more details.

HOLIDAY CLASSES 9-20TH JULY MONDAY TO FRIDAY

We are only 4 months away from the end of year exams. Prepare for these now with our holiday courses of 2 hours per day and learn how to apply your knowledge to pass the exams well

Expert Tutors Small Classes Limited Spaces BOOK NOW

Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!” Fees During Term: Casual $ 50 per hour 10 Hours $450 ($45 per hour) 20 Hours $800 ($40 per hour)

PURC devotes day to Heart Kids P

akuranga United Rugby Club hosted a Charity Day on Saturday to support this year’s recipient Heart Kids. A special one-off playing jersey was pre-sold and worn by the Premiers against opposition Eden. The day started with The Charity’s representative Monty speaking about the Charity and then followed guest speakers Bronwyn and Sonja Ward and Michelle Dempsey. Bronwyn has been a Heart Kid for many years and Michelle (14) had her heart surgery five weeks ago. We were also lucky enough to have Charlotte and Dave Evans come with their precious son Lachie who had lifesaving open heart surgery at just five-daysold. There were several highlights of the day but what made it all worthwhile were the unexpected connections the heart kids’ families made with each other and the appreciation they showed to the club for running the fundraiser. You could see how much it meant to them. It is such a warm feeling to give something back to the community in both support and financial help. After the game, seeing one of our young Premier players come over and talk to Michelle – who is going

to be receiving his jersey - was a special moment. They listened to the Heart Kids speaking before the game and it hit home to them what this day was all about. Unfortunately the Premiers couldn’t quite secure a win (15-18) but for those of us in Dufty Bell Lounge, the day was a huge suc-

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, June 28, 2018 — 27

It’s official – Hugo’s a ref On a cold winter’s Saturday morning, you wont find this teenage boy playing Fortnight. Instead he is refereeing Auckland children on the rugby field. Hugo Clarke, who is in the Year 9 Sports in Education Programme (SIE) at Howick College, has only just turned 14 and is already contemplating a future as an international rugby referee. Hugo is building a name as a rugby referee, and receives many requests from teams asking him to ref their games. Disenchanted with the size of some of the players in the open rugby divisions which he used to play in, he decided to opt out of playing rugby in 2016 and instead took up a whistle. Hugo’s mum Jo said: “In 2016 Hugo saw a boy of similar age to him reffing at an U10 rugby tournament and he said to me, “I am going to do that. If that boy can do it, then so can I.” So over the summer of 2016/2017, Hugo started reffing touch rugby at Pakuranga United Rugby Club (PURC). Then last year he became the team ref for the Pakuranga Under 8 Blackhawks. Hugo went on to ref touch again last summer and continues to ref for the now U9 PURC Blackhawks. He has also reffed several U11 matches and recently reffed a college match between Pakuranga College and St Peters. Every Monday night, with the support of his stepfather Scott, Hugo attends the Auckland Referees Association course, and has recently

been assessed and presented with his official referee ARA uniform. Scott is an ARA rugby referee as well as a coach at PURC and he has been a huge support teaching and guiding Hugo as he develops the skills to become a better ref. He said there is a huge shortage of quality referees and Hugo has received a great amount of positive support from PURC, players and coaches. “In general, rugby referees get a lot of criticism yelled at them, however at Pakuranga United Rugby Club we encourage positive and supportive sideline behaviour from our spectators as refereeing is a voluntary role and one that not many people put their hands up for,” said Scott. PURC general manager Stephen Hackett said: “Hugo is a good young guy who has stayed in the game by becoming a referee, he has just received his official referee jersey and we are pretty proud of what he has achieved.”

Copies are available from locations across the district – visit eastlife.co.nz for pickup sites. An e-edition is also available.
