the West Coast taught me the value and benefits of working with other like-minded and sharing people to achieve a result unachievable without their help such as haymaking while the weather was fine. “I feel very honoured to have been nominated for this award by wonderful caring people, many of whom have also been volunteers.” When the Times contacted Martine she was in Canada attending a conference of the World Blind Union. Speaking from Ottawa she said that she was very surprised when she first heard a month ago that she was honoured.
“I feel really humbled. It’s so nice to know that while you are busy doing the work you are passionate about, someone has nominated you. This is a huge acknowledgement and inspiration for me since there is so much more to be done for people with disability in terms of creating a better environment and transport in developing countries,” she says. “The only person I shared the good news with was my husband when I got a letter asking if I’d accept the Queen’s Service Medal and if all the details mentioned are correct. But now we will celebrate with the family once the announcement is made.”

I have great support people and partners around me who must have supported the nomination so I feel a little embarrassed that I get the award when it is so much of a team effort.” Meanwhile, Mrs Johnson said she has been involved as a volunteer in a number of different organisations and activities all her life. “I believe that growing up on a farm in a very small community on

Tenants sour over centre plans
MATTRESS
By Nick Krause and Therese Henkin
A
t least two retailers at Highland Park Shopping Centre are seeking legal advice over redevelopment plans which will likely see them surrender their leases and leave the site. And one retailer is “a little bit sour” after investing $500,000 in his store in a major refit around Christmas 2016. Tenants were advised in February that the shopping centre was purchased by Foodstuffs North Island which intends to “completely redevelop that part of the centre comprising the specialty retail shops”. It intends to carry out a “comprehensive redevelopment in the short term which will, in time, lead to the development of Pak’n’Save”. “Where premises are required to be demolished as part of the redevelopment, NTC (The National Trading Company, part of Foodstuffs NI) will comply with its obligations under the terms of each individual lease,” a February 23 letter from managing agents Colliers said. “Once plans have been finalised, NTC intends to serve surrender notices to affected tenants in accordance with Section 12 of the relevant leases,” Colliers said. “We will keep you informed about when this is likely to occur as NTC’s plans are finalised.” One retailer, who asked not to be named, told the Times: “I am receiving legal advice as to my position at Highland Park. “Along with many tenants here, we are still in the dark as to the overall plans. I feel I know about as much as the management at present.“I have no doubt the impact on the tenants and many, many loyal customers is going to be difficult to deal with.” Another retailer, who wished to remain anonymous, has had a business there for 10 years. “A lot of the community don’t want it (the redevelopment). Unfortunately, no-one wants this to happen.” He told the Times demolition is set for March 31. “Everything is so uncertain at the moment. We’ll have to relocate. Site options are very limited at the moment,” he said. “Overall, I understand it’s all business at the end of the day. It’s our way of life here...there’s ease of access. “The main aim is to relocate

to an equally convenient site. We are trying to find a way to inform our customers. “Admittedly, no-one is happy. We did $500,000 (of) internal work (in the store)...(we’re) a little bit sour.” Another retailer told a meeting of the Howick Local Board last week that “the bullying has started”. “Most of the small family businesses can’t afford to spend on big lawyers,” he said. “So we don’t know what the plan is. We’ve only had a short 15 minute meeting with Colliers.” He said there were no plans in place in which retailers could come back and secure space in the new complex. “That’s quite frustrating and disgusting...what do the small family-owned businesses do?” “We support the local area, people from Highlands Retirement Village, Pakuranga Park Village - they all come to our shopping centre for small businesses, for small services. This is what we are. “They have all been asking us “where are you guys going? Where do we go now?”. He said he was happy for Pak’n’Save to come in. “I am not against it. It’s good for competition but there should be some kind of support given to small businesses,” he said. “I don’t know whether it’s local government (which should step up) but somebody needs to be asking, ‘how are we going to protect small businesses?’ “The lease that everybody has signed says that we are protected and that we should be given space to grow our business while the renovation is going on. “There’s nothing. We have all been given a letter now that says at the end of March 2019, we all
have to be out.” He asked the local board how it could support or guide retailers. “My lease expires in 2024. They’ve told us there will be no compensation and people have spent a few thousands of dollars on renovations,” he said. “We have invested so much - I had to spend $25,000 on renovations such as repainting, re-carpeting the store. It’s all down the drain now.” Antoinette Laird of Foodstuffs NZ has reiterated that Foodstuffs North Island does not take ownership of the site until the end of June “So we believe that we’ve been doing as much as we can to keep tenants up to speed within the realms of what we’re practicably able to do. “It’s a very big project and we have a number of people working with us who are experts in their field, like (commercial real estate company) Colliers.” She told the Times they would have a clearer picture of what they’re planning for the site later in June which could help address some of the uncertainty tenants and locals have expressed. “We realise Highland Park is a hub and meeting point for many and we have absolutely no intention of eroding that – in fact, we’re setting out to give this important location an awesome makeover, in addition to creating jobs and an enhanced shopping experience,” she said. “We have indicated that a March 1, 2019 exit date is possible with a potential building and refurbishment programme taking approximately two years from that date, however, there are many contingencies we need to take into account as we look to develop and enhance the Highland Park shopping precinct.”

jects which are delayed for a range of reasons and the delivery team is focusing on getting these resolved. Fencible walk is one of these projects,” Sheridan says.
Park maintenance a constant battle By Therese Henkin Local Board member Garry Boles says the last 12 months with Auckland Council have been an ongoing challenge. “The last 12 months have become a constant battle, with multiple complaints from the community arriving daily – many of these regarding the condition of our parks and walkways, and several asking when storm damage from January will be repaired.” “We advise residents to follow the recommended procedure for the quickest response by calling the Auckland Council Call Centre.” “Weeks later board members are being called back by the complainants saying they have had no contact from council and their issues have not been resolved,” says Boles. Boles, who oversees the parks and recreation portfolio, says he regularly receives emails from members of the public telling him “what he should be doing.” “I can assure you that when
we receive c omplaints, these are immediately directed to the council staff responsible. In response they reassure Garry Boles us the problem will be addressed.” Auckland Council community facilities general manager Rod Sheridan says the unprecedented nature of April’s storm and the continued heavy rainfall is responsible for the state of the parks and reserves. “In the three-day period immediately following the storm, Auckland Council’s contact centre received more than 2000 calls relating to downed trees – this is more than we what we usually receive in an average month,” he says. He says the initial response to the storm was to make sites safe for public use. For a full week following the
storm, arborists worked around the clock in 12-hour shifts and were continually redeployed to high-priority sites to clear trees that had compromised power lines, and fallen across houses, roads and cars. “The volume is immense and has stretched capacity in many areas, resulting in delays to other core maintenance work. However, we are working through the backlog and expect to be on top of it in the coming weeks,” he says. “On top of this, the continued above-average rainfall is creating delays to mowing work. In April we saw a 180 per cent increase in rain. This continued into May and NIWA’s regional predictions are indicating that there will be a 50 per cent increase in rain through to July.” He says calling the Auckland Council contact centre is the best avenue for getting these issues resolved. If people have already done so with no response, he says, they should touch base with the contact centre again for an update.

ome local board members are fed up as community maintenance and funded projects continue to fall by the wayside. Long standing board member Adele White says Auckland Council and Auckland Transport are letting the community down as continued delays to community projects frustrate residents. She says simple things are not getting done and enough is enough. “The people of Howick have massive pride in their town. They pay substantial rates and they quite fairly seek a decent standard,” White says. “There has been a broken bench seat sitting in the middle of Howick Village for months now. There is nowhere for bus users to shelter outside the Good Home because the bus shelter was destroyed by a bus months ago.” She says the list of small things that haven’t been done goes on. She is also disappointed at the constant delays the board is experiencing with the completion of funded projects. “We have been waiting for a chess table to be installed in Fencible Walk for nearly two years now and the turnaround for the buses at the Half Moon Bay Ferry Terminal was supposed to be opened in December last year.” James Ireland, an AT spokesperson, says Auckland Transport has
discussed nine different possible local board funded projects this term. “The Howick Local Board has proceeded with investigation of three, Adele White all of which followed the expected timeframes,” he says. “The bus shelter on Picton Street was knocked down around 14 months ago. It has not been replaced because the footpath is very narrow in that area and fitting the shelter on the foot path in a way that does not obstruct the Good Home’s windows and access is difficult.” Ireland says the Howick Local Board is working on a Howick Village Centre Plan that will remove some parking and may provide a wide enough footpath for a new bus shelter. “It would not be financially sensible to install a new shelter anywhere until details of this plan are confirmed by the Howick Local Board.” With regard to the bus turnaround, Ireland says the project has taken much longer than expected due to delays in contract negotiations and AT have apologised to the board for the delay. The project is due to be finished next month. Auckland Council community facilities general manager Rod Sher-

Auckland Festival of Photography The Auckland Festival of Photography is happening now throughout Tamaki Makaurau. This annual festival brings work by top photographers from across the country and, in the past few years, has broaden to include international artists also. At Malcolm Smith Gallery we are pleased to present an exhibition by creative duo Tiger Murdoch. Tiger Murdoch’s practice uses public spaces, institutional and otherwise, to stage topical conversations on poverty, discrimination, class hierarchies, injustice and exclusion. This exhibition, The Insider to produce an entirely democratic exhibition, inviting everyone and anyone to submit content to be included. In 2017, Tiger Murdoch exhibited The Insider at the Blue Oyster Project Space, exploring through social participation and provocation the meanings and valences of the term “insider” in the city of Dunedin. The Insider at Malcolm Smith Gallery this year extends the project to Auckland’s eastern suburbs. For the Howick iteration, Tiger Murdoch invited members of the

public to share written and visual responses to the idea of the “inside” – “What is the Inside? What are the implications of the Insider?” – through posters in public spaces, social media and the gallery. Responses have been formatted into large scale wall paste-ups that position, using the visual language of political communication, community voices, claims and contention at the centre of an institutional space typically reserved for the expressions and perspectives of art world insiders. In other parts of Uxbridge, two more photographic exhibitions are on display. Andrea Selwood presents an exhibition entitled Home Science. It explores connections between light, water and altered states of matter through images centering on a vortex motif – all captured as photograms – photographs made without a camera. We also have a digital exhibition by the Howick Camera Club – this shows the dynamic and wide ranging talents of the club members. All exhibitions are on display until 30 June. Alternatives to new taxes Last week, Auckland Council voted 13-7 to keep pressing forward in their attempt to impose a new regional fuel tax on Auckland. National has consistently opposed regional fuel taxes in Auckland since we repealed a previous attempt to impose them in 2009. The primary reason for this is because we believe that adding 11.5 cents to the price of fuel imposes an unnecessary burden on Auckland families. In Government, National didn’t need to impose new regional fuel taxes in order to fund transport. We managed to harness the dividends of a growing economy and apply sound fiscal discipline to transport investment which meant that projects could be funded without imposing new costs. That approach allowed us to fund projects such as the AMETI Eastern Busway in partnership

with Auckland Council without requiring new taxes on Aucklanders. This is a project that will provide huge benefits in connecting our community with a public transport corridor. We should not be attempting to erode the benefits we gain by raising taxes at the same time. So how would National fund key transport projects such as the AMETI Busway in Auckland without resorting to new taxes? The first place to start is to look at the ability of Auckland Council to find savings in its own budget. The regional fuel tax is projected to raise $150 million. For the Council to raise that, they would only need to find 4 per cent in savings from their budget. To put that in context, Mayor Goff promised to find between 3-6 per cent of savings when he was elected. If the Council could follow through with this promise, a regional fuel tax would not be
ami-Lee Ross MP for Botany needed. National was also able to fund a record $32 billion infrastructure package in Budget 2017 because of the growing economy. That package would have allowed us to continue putting large investment into public transport and into key roading projects like AMETI, the EastWest Link and Mill Road. This all goes to show that regional fuel taxes are not needed. They will impose a large economic cost on the regions in which they are imposed and there are other ways to ensure projects get completed without resorting to new taxes. ■ Jami-Lee Ross, MP for Botany

App to fight stress and anxiety By Farida Master
E
xperiencing deep stress and anxiety at the separation of his parents was one of the triggers for Coby Molan to work on an app that could help teenagers like him. He says that at the age of 12 he got into trouble and was forced to live with his father. He was really scared because he had not heard good things about him. And while he gradually discovered that his dad was a great guy, he still suffers from anxiety that he had first experienced at a very young age. Using his personal story to connect with those suffering from mental health problems he, along with five other Year 13 students from Ormiston Senior College, came up with a business idea for the Young Enterprise Scheme. Together they formed a company called Canvas and worked on an app that provided stressbusting games, activities, music and meditation. The 21st century application is in partnership with Youthline
which will make people aware of its existence. It ties in with My Canvas campaign where Coby tells his story. “The application gives access to every single helpline in New Zealand. You can even use it as a journal to record your thoughts,” says Sahil Chand, chief executive officer of Canvas. “We worked on the idea along with our college therapist and counsellors from the neighbouring colleges. “There are bubblepopping games with a soothing vibration on the fingertips. There is nothing like this in the market,” he says. Chief financial officer Coby says it is a perfect time to hit the market. “With so much mental health awareness, we hope to fight depression and stop it before it starts.” Canvas has also worked on a question mark campaign and has a barcode. Sales and marketing manager Vidur Ratna, says: “Scanning the barcode will take you to a website where there is a video promoting the app.” A plaque explains: “We are a business designed for the sole
reason of relieving stress and anxiety through the use of games and activities in our mobile application. We are named Canvas because everyone’s life is like a canvas we paint a part of it every day and sometimes the colours intertwine and we get stuck in the detail. Canvas help you relieve that stress and get you back on track to paint your ‘perfect picture’. “ Communications manager Aiden Wills-Kaio says that they plan to fully develop the app at the cost of $100,000 and are confident of getting the funding. The team of Sahil Chand, Vidur Ratna, Ethan McCormick, Coby Molan, Aiden Wills-Kaio and Rico Pulley-Akavi say they plan to take it further through their university years and beyond. Young Enterprise Scheme has four tasks to compile a number of points to win Company of the Year. Canvas has already scored first place in east Auckland in Task One. They have already pitched their business proposal for Task Two and are confident of making it.
Fox qualifies for 2018 US Open Professional golfer Ryan Fox, of Beachlands, has added to his already successful weekend by qualifying for the 2018 US Open Championship at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club this week. With rounds of 65 and 71 at the open sectional qualifying at Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, England, Fox continued his form from the European Tour to secure a place in his fourth major championship which commences on June 13. After playing two Open Championships and one PGA Championship, this will be his first US Open as he looks to join fellow Kiwi and 2005 US Open champion, Michael Campbell in the history books. “Massively excited to qualify for my fourth major, I have never played the US Open before, so to get to play one in New York at Shinnecock at one of the most iconic US Open venues is going to be pretty special, I can’t wait,” said Fox.
Ryan Fox is going to the US Open. Photo supplied
The unique thing about his qualification is that Campbell qualified for the US Open through the same sectional qualifying. The USGA-introduced European qualifying for the first time in 2005, which took place at
the exact same destination, Walton Heath. The eventual US Open champion had to sink a six-foot birdie putt on the last hole of qualifying to secure his place in the US Open and the rest is history. Fox has enjoyed a great few weeks on the European Tour’s Rolex Series with his form continuing to go from strength to strength after finishing T51 and T8 in the last two weeks, so he will have high hopes and a positive mindset entering one of the globes biggest events. “It’s been a pretty surreal four days really, obviously finishing with a top 10 initially with a great last round and doing a lot to secure my card for next year, then high-tail it back to London for 36 holes today,” said Fox. “It was certainly nice to continue the form from yesterday’s round into today and I’m just very happy and hopefully it can continue for another week or so entering the US Open.

Watch out – posties’ Paxsters about On Monday 21 May, I attended a medical appointment at the former Greenlane Hospital. After surviving the journey, (three buses to get there and three buses to get home) I found myself staring down the barrel of an oncoming NZ Post Paxster. These NZ Post Delivery vehicles take up the entire width of the footpath. Initially I thought they would slow down and stop until we could negotiate our path past one another carefully and safely. Oh how wrong was I! The Paxster did not slow, did not stop but definitely was going to continue to go, even if it was through me. I stepped aside onto

Boys’ behaviour was disgusting
More mums wanted for study
Further to your article (Times, May 31) we were witness to the incident outside the car park at Highland Park. The restraint showed by the police was commendable. The young man and his band of friends were a total disappointment and their lack of respect during and after the arrest was, to say the least, disgusting. I am amazed that Mr Garnett has the audacity to criticise the police for his son’s behaviour. They showed great restraint under provocation from a gang of youths.Advice? change your son’s attitude and the future may be better for him and his gang of friends.
I am looking to enrol local pregnant mums into research study ran by the University of Auckland. I’m a research midwife based at the Liggins Institute at Auckland University. We are currently undertaking a huge research project in the impact on the current diabetes thresholds in NZ on women and children’s health. We currently are approaching 3000 recruited mums across Auckland, and hoping to achieve numbers over 4000 in order to provide accurate findings to assist in the provision of effective health care for future generations.
Paul Rayner
This unfortunately means the PaxsterCam footage has been overwritten. How convenient for NZ Post! If incidents like this are being ignored by NZ Post, it will only be a matter of time before a pedestrian is badly injured by one of these vehicles. I find it hard to believe this one was being operated within Safe Operation Procedures and, if it was, then this needs to be changed at the pace the Paxster was being operated at! Please warn all your readers to be wary and alert around these Paxster vehicles for their own safety.
We are hoping to improve our profile in the eastern suburbs, and so increase recruitment from this area. Please do not hesitate to contact me at c.overfield@auckland.ac.nz.

Get rid of him The partner of the woman who sold her daughter for sex was arrested at the airport trying to flee to India. Why did the police not carry his bags to the plane and send him on his way? Surely we would be better off without him. So now we have to pay to house him in prison for four years, when our lock-up facilities are overflowing. Australia sends their wrongdoing NZ citizens back home. Why can’t we do the same and we prob-
ably would not have to spend millions building new prisons?

A
n independent review of the response by Auckland’s emergency management agencies to the major storm event that hit the region in Auckland will be carried out in the coming months. The review, scoped by the Auckland Civil Defence and Emergency Management Coordinating Executive Group (CEG) and endorsed by the council’s Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group Committee, will identify successes and areas for improvement, as well as any steps that could be taken to mitigate future risks. Mayor Phil Goff says the April storm impacted hundreds of thousands of Aucklanders and is a wake-up call for Aucklanders to be prepared for increasingly more frequent weather events. “We have also made a long
term commitment in our budget planning to improve the resilience of our region’s infrastructure and ensure our service delivery operations are up to scratch,” he says. Auckland Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group Committee Chair Sharon Stewart acknowledged the scale of the April storm and depth of the Auckland agencies’ response. “Emergency responders, council staff and volunteers knocked on more than 7,000 doors, distributed 21,500 litres of drinking water and delivered 273 portable toilets. “This was the biggest power outage in New Zealand history. Widespread power outages have a tremendous effect on all aspects of daily life and this response required all agencies in the CDEM Group to put their
heads together to communicate with and support affected communities. “As emergency-focussed agencies we plan and prepare for situations like this but there is nothing like a major response to test your systems and look for ways to make them stronger. We look forward to working together with our colleagues across the group to review how we performed in April,” says Councillor Stewart. Approximately 183,000 Auckland households (around 30 per cent of the region) were affected by power outages, with some without power for more than a week after the storm hit. This impacted on communication and telecommunication, some households ability to pump water for sewage systems, food storage and preparation, and heating.

English Grandmaster Gawain Maroroa Jones was in action at the Howick-Pakuranga Chess Club taking on 22 players in a simultaneous display in support of three local players being selected for the NZ Olympiad team headed to Batumi, Georgia in September. Those selected were Federation Master Ben Hague, Federation Master Daniel Gong and Woman Federation Master Jasmine Zhang. And behind every good man is a woman, with his lovely wife Woman International Master Sue Maroroa in support of her husband. She used to play at the Howick-Pakuranga Club, but they both now play for England. One of Gawain’s opponents was his father-in-law Temu Maroroa. Gawain recently came second in the European Individual Championship, and qualified for the World

he timing couldn’t have been better. A phone call from the Prime Minister’s office asking if Pillars, a charity for children of prisoners, would accept a Royal wedding gift of 5k and if they could advise Prince Harry and Meghan Markle that their wedding gift had been accepted. It was testimony to years of hard work and dedication that had gone into building the charity. The royal couple had asked that in lieu of gifts, donations be made to chosen charity. The first phone call that Verna McFelin, Pillars founder and chief executive made, on receiving the good news was to Maxine Gay, Pillars’ acting northern regional manager. Maxine, based locally says: “It’s so wonderful that Verna founded Pillars 30 years ago and that Megan and Harry were married on the 30th anniversary of Pillars. Maxine says it is a big acknowledgement of the unique work that Pillars does to prevent intergenerational crime. “We start with an ambulance on the top instead of the bottom of the cliff.” She says that this year, Pillars which provides positive mentors for vulnerable children of prisoners – was one of the five finalists for the New Zealand Community Organisation of the Year. “Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is well aware of the work

He is aware of how traumatic it can be for the family. “They are aware that there is a huge cohort of children of prisoners and how important it is to lift them from poverty and help raise their profile,” says the former trade unionist. “We’ve had 800 children in
our programme and our one-onone mentors sign up for a minimum of 12 months involvement because our children have so many people in and out of their lives.” She says that a child of an incarcerated person is nine-anda-half times more likely to commit a crime. “There are around 25,000 children who are affected because
they have parents in prison. We work with the whanau and the children to help bring stability into the family. “This award catapults those children from obscurity and allows Pillars to talk about it,” she says. The Royal wedding gift will go towards an educational scholarship to help a couple of children a year.

Haines heads to Uxbridge New Zealand born musician Nathan Haines is heading to Uxbridge this month. The vocalist and saxophonist will take the stage against all odds for a special concert on June 16 Nathan Haines after a throat cancer diagnosis last year left him unsure if he would ever play again. He will be joined by his brother Joel Haines on guitar, Alan Brown on Hammond organ and keyboards, with his regular stellar rhythm section of Mickey Ututaonga on drums with Karika Turua on bass providing a solid, grooving foundation. “I’m very excited to be back and to be able to play again” says Nathan. “I’ve been through hell and back again since I was admitted to hospital for life saving surgery on Boxing Day 2017. I’ve had to rethink a few things and try and rebuild myself physically, but music for me is a healing force in the universe and as such it will give me the energy I need to play alongside my brother and close friends”. Nathan celebrates 25 years next year in 2019 since his ground breaking debut album Shift Left was released in 1994. This album was Nathan’s fist gold selling album in New Zealand and went onto produce a whole new generation of musicians and producers and to change the local musical landscape. The show will draw on past albums from his extensive back catalog plus some brand new material and is a show of an artist at his creative peak playing music from the heart.

Where do you come from? ‘W
here do you really come from’? Most migrants can identify with the question that has been asked innumerable times. Gemishka Chetty, a South African Indian and photographer/ videographer used her passion for capturing humans behind a camera in a way that depicts the internal conflict migrants face with their identities and a sense of belonging to their country of origin and the country they now call home. A part of the Arts Out East Festival recently held, Gemishka says that her photography exhibition at the Pakuranga Library portrayed the underlying tones of racism that questions identities. “The exhibition also proudly celebrated the multicultural background that makes up the rich DNA of Auckland,” she says. “It was not only me but also my friends and strangers I’ve met who felt the same way about our culture and identity as migrants living in New Zealand,” says the young artist who writes and performs poetry that reflects stories of personal conflict with her identity. “I chose photography to express this strong theme for others to see and relate their own stories. My personal journey with my identity has lead me to reclaim my ethnicity, and no longer carry the shame of eating banana curry sandwiches for lunch during high school,” she says. Gemishka is an artistic production manager with a theatre company that has also co-created a web series called Brown Noize.

“When I return to the Philippines I feel like one woman, and when I stay in New Zealand I feel like another woman. This is my internal conflict. I feel like I need to act reserved in this country and that I have to hold back on my fierceness. As a performer this challenges me. When I return to the Philippines, I feel at ease with the noise, the colours, and my family. But still, I never quite feel at home here or there.”

Pakuranga Park Village celebrated Samoan Independence Day with a very special performance on Friday. Residents sat in awe as students from Edgewater College’s Samoan Cultural group sang and danced in a very special cultural showcase. Three students Precious Ameke, Angelicia Siuta and Ericka Tofa performed alongside their teacher Leitu Samaseia. The day included teaching the residents Samoan words and phrases as well as inviting residents to join in the dancing. The event was organised by the Village’s activity assistant Lupe Hill as part of Samoan Language Week. Village spokesperson Valerie Ellor says the event was a huge success with the residents and the beginning of a new partnership with Edgewater College.

Increasing pressure on housing stock lies ahead R
esearch shows home buyers intend to get more active, but sellers less likely to go to market There are many more buyers than sellers intending to be active in the New Zealand property market in the next 12 months. This was a major finding in research released this month by realestate.
co.nz, the country’s largest property listing site. Commissioned by realestate.co.nz, the Horizon Research survey examined buyer and seller intention to participate in the property market in the near future. The research results show that 6.4 per cent of the adults 18 years or over surveyed are definitely looking to buy in the next

12 months, but only 2.8 per cent of people stated they are definitely looking to sell in that same period, says realestate. co.nz spokesperson Vanessa Taylor. This equates to a shortage of around 3.6 per cent of homes across the New Zealand marketplace, representing a significant number of properties currently not on the market, she says. “Even taking into account new builds which are underway and not included in these numbers, there will be an increasingly serious shortage of properties for keen buyers.” “Not surprisingly, the biggest pressure is evident in Auckland,” says Taylor. The research shows that in the Auckland Council (super city) catchment, those who said they were definitely looking to buy lifted to 9.5 per cent (from 6.9 per cent in November 2017). However, those who intended to sell fell from 4.3 per cent to 2.6 per cent in the same period. “This represents a widening gap between definite buyers and definite sellers. “In November the shortfall between definite buyers and definite sellers represented around 9000 homes. “With more buyers saying they want to get into the market, the shortfall in the
number of homes that would be required to meet that stated demand has widened to around 32,700,” says Taylor. Of the six local government areas identified in the Horizon Research survey, only Tauranga City had more sellers (3.9 per cent) than buyers (1 per cent) intending to be active in the next 12 months. In Christchurch City there was a significant gap between buyer and seller intention, with 15.5 per cent definitely looking to buy in the next 12 months and 4 per cent definitely looking to sell.
Current stability in national real estate market The research from Horizon shows the buying and selling intentions of New Zealanders in the next 12 months. Real time statistics from realestate. co.nz show the current market nationally is relatively stable, says Vanessa Taylor. New listings are slightly down compared to May 2017 (a 0.3 per cent decrease) and overall, total housing stock is marginally up one per cent (24,477) compared to May 2017. The Auckland region pulled down the overall national number of new listings with a 4.4 per cent fall compared with the

same period last year, but this was balanced by a lift in new listings in 13 of the 19 regions. The average asking price for a New Zealand home is $648,218 representing a 0.4 per cent decrease on April 2018. “It paints a picture of more choice and stable pricing in modest terms,” says Taylor.
“We are entering the winter period and typically the market starts to go quiet, but people still buy and sell property. The winter months are typically slower with less volume than the summer months, which gives buyers and sellers more time to consider opportunities.”

Changes to Auckland’s water and wastewater charges
CD261340
PAKURANGA COLLEGE Enrolment Procedures for 2019
We’d like to let you know that the amount you pay for water and wastewater services will change from 1 July 2018.
Year 9 enrolment packs will be available through contributing Intermediate Schools or from the College Reception from Thursday 5 July 2018. In-Zone enrolments will be by post or hand delivered to the Reception Office (open 8:00am till 4:00pm) with a closing date of Friday 24 August 2018. Out-of-Zone applications must be lodged at the Reception Office by 4:00pm on Wednesday 5 September 2018. If required, a ballot will take place on Wednesday 12 September 2018. There will be NO places offered for Out-of-Zone Year 10-13 enrolments for 2019.
The adjustment is necessary to cover increased service delivery costs and the need to invest in new and existing infrastructure to cater for Auckland’s growing population. All of the money we receive from you goes into operating, maintaining and expanding our infrastructure. We do not receive any additional funding from Auckland Council or the government, nor do we pay a dividend to Auckland Council.

Are All Blacks apprehensive?
W
ith so many players missing so much rugby because of injuries or suspension, the All Blacks have cause to be apprehensive heading into their first test against unpredictable France at Eden Park on Saturday. However there will be relief that Sam Whitelock, Ryan Crotty and Sam Cane have been cleared to play with Whitelock taking over the captaincy from Kieran Read who is still recuperating from back surgery. Unfortunately he won’t have Brodie Retallick as his locking partner after the Chiefs’ ironman suffered pectoral damage in his team’s 34-20 loss to the Crusaders. Having gone through no fewer than 70 players since the start of last season, France finished fourth in the Six Nations with two wins, the most satisfying being a 22-16 triumph against England. They beat Italy 34-17, lost to Scotland 32-25 but went very close against Wales and champions Ireland, losing 14-13 and 15-13 respectively. With Morgan Parra, Yoann Maestri, Maxime Médard and brilliant midfield back Wesley Fofana
Agnew’s Angle all returning from injury, they will be that much stronger. While question marks hover around the lack of match play experienced by the All Blacks forwards, their backs remain a classy act despite the withdrawal of Sonny Bill Williams with a knee injury. In Crotty, Anton Lienert-Brown, Ngani Laumape and Jack Goodhue they are blessed with plenty of midfield depth outside brilliant halves Aaron Smith and Beauden Barrett. Named International Player of the Year over the past two seasons, Barrett is not making the dazzling breaks he once did and is not coping with the rushed defence as well as Crusader Richie Mo’unga who has outplayed him and the Chiefs’ Damian McKenzie in recent games. A cool, calm tactician in the mould of Dan Carter, Mo’unga reads the game beautifully and showed against the Chiefs he possesses a

snappy side-step that can elude the best defenders. However Barrett remains an exceptional talent and will probably remain the national selec-
tors’ first choice first-five for some time to come. Nevertheless with Mo’unga and McKenzie challenging, he knows he can’t rest on his laurels.
Last year the selectors favoured the Williams/Crotty midfield combination once Williams recovered from the Achilles injury he suffered at the 2016 Rio Olympics and he rewarded them with a particularly good game against Wales at Cardiff. However the hard-running Laumape was the outstanding second-five of the Super Rugby championship, scoring 15 tries, and the ever-reliable Crotty remains a better second-five than he is a centre where Lienert-Brown’s clever ball distribution has set up so many tries. With the back three of Ben Smith, Rieko Ioane and Waisake Naholo in sharp form, the All Blacks will seek to move the ball wide if conditions allow. However with Joe Moody, Owen Franks, Sam Whitelock, Sam Cane and Liam Squire all short of match play, the French will fancy their chances of dominating the All Backs pack. As a consequence, coach Steve Hansen could ring the changes off the reserves bench earlier than usual. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author
Sadness at end of a magical era for Pakuranga Madrigal Choir By THERESE HENKIN
Stan Hilliam turned 101 years old recently and celebrated by riding a motorcycle around Sheralee Place in Howick. Photo supplied
Celebrating 101 years in style By THERESE HENKIN It’s not every day you see a centenarian on a motorbike. But Stanley Hilliam was made a promise by his doctor that if he reached 100 years of age, he would get to ride pillion on a motorcycle around the block. So at the grand old age of 101, Stan hopped on the back of his doctor’s motorbike with his family cheering him on. Stan’s niece Lynette Mitchell says it was a memorable moment the family will treasure forever. “A few years ago Uncle Stan was admiring [Dr Clarke’s] motorbike outside the Panmure Surgery and [Dr Clark] said he would make him a deal. If he made it to 100, he would take him for a ride,” she says. It was all set to go ahead last year on Stan’s 100th birthday when he suffered a fall which resulted in a broken hip. “So that was the end of that,” says Lynette. But a year later, even though he was now using a walker to get
around, Stan couldn’t see why, with his hip healed, he couldn’t still take Dr Clark up on his offer. The ride took place on Stan’s birthday, with family travelling from all over the world for a birthday celebration in Howick. If the motorcycle trip was anything to go by, Stan isn’t ready to slow down. He is a firm believer in striving to make the most out of life and is always seen helping others. His love of learning and the English language sees him spend a great deal of time studying the dictionary. He loves to go on outings and is the first to put his hand up for activities at his rest home in Ellerslie. He takes great pride in being the spokesperson for the residents in his wing at the monthly meetings. Lynette says Stan is in exceptionally good health for his age. “A nurse asked him if he still felt the same inside as he did when he was 21. His reply was ‘no, I had no brains then!’ ” she laughs.

After 43 years together, The Pakuranga Madrigal Choir is coming to an end. They are disbanding and will embark on their own journey’s following the announcement of choir lead Neil Guyan’s retirement. After a series of health complications, Neil has had to give up the role he adores, marking the end of an era for the choir. Over the years, the choir has shown resilience in the face of adversity, with Neil guiding them through threats to the funding and housing of the choir over the years. The journey started in 1969 when Neil, who at the time was Pakuranga College’s head of music, established the school’s madrigal choir for those who enjoyed choral pursuits. The choir was prolific and went on to win many awards. However, after leaving school, some of the students who belonged to the choir craved the opportunity to sing again. So in 1972 Neil decided to establish the madrigal choir for adults which was originally called the Pakuranga College Evening Class Madrigal Choir. Vicky Stone, who has been a choir member since its inception, says Neil was the soul of music in Howick. “He has had a huge impact on musicians and singers in this area over the years and

has taught so many students who have gone on to reach incredible heights in their music,” she says. She has fond memories of Neil’s enthusiasm inspiring a sense of passion and drive in everyone he taught. Vicky says the choir has been in recess for almost a year awaiting Neil’s decision on whether he could continue to lead the choir following his health complications. “His retirement has left a huge gap in the music scene
here in Howick and I just don’t think anyone would have been able to take his place leading the choir.” But while ill-health may have slowed him down, the 72-yearold will never lose his love of music. Despite his limited eyesight stopping him from reading music, he is still seen playing piano and organ from memory at All Saints Church. “We all have such fond memories of Neil and the choir, we will miss him.”
