oodstuffs North Island Ltd has bought Highland Park Shopping Centre, with a view to eventually bringing a new shopping option to the high growth east Auckland area. The centre will be redeveloped over time, Foodstuffs said in a media statement. The redevelopment will be designed to accommodate existing retailers and to ultimately include a Pak’nSave supermarket. The co-operative believes the proposed redevelopment will offer locals the opportunity to enjoy New Zealand’s lowest food prices. The current owners, Highland Centre Ltd, have owned the Highland Park Shopping Centre for 20

years. Over this time, they have come to know many of their tenants personally and, as such, the decision to sell was given a great deal of thought, the media release said. “After all these years, we are pleased to be able to sell to a 100 per cent New Zealand-owned company which is committed to providing a valuable service to the Highland Park and wider east Auckland community,” said Mark Townsend, director, Highland Centre Limited. Lindsay Rowles, Foodstuffs North Island general manager, property development said the purchase is an exciting milestone for the co-operative. “While we are still very much

in the planning and evaluation stage, we are considering adding a Pak’nSave to the Highland Park and wider Eastern Bays area, which ultimately means we are able to offer customers more choice,” said Rowles. “The details are still to be worked through. Our focus right now is on working with the existing tenants to ensure they have all the information they need as the redevelopment begins to take shape.” The rights and interests of existing tenants will be taken into account, including the Countdown supermarket in the Centre which is not directly affected by the current redevelopment proposal. Foodstuffs North Island as the managing agent for the Highland Park Shopping Centre. They are handling the process on behalf of Foodstuffs and are responsible for all property, facilities and marketing management associated with the site. “We know the news that Foodstuffs has purchased the Shopping Centre could mean uncertainty for its current tenants, and we are very mindful of this”, said Rowles. “The Foodstuffs team wants all tenants, some of whom have been here for many years, to feel supported and, with Colliers, are endeavouring to make this process as seamless as possible.” ➤ Turn to Page 3

Teen hit by bus A 16-year-old male sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Middlemore Hospital after he was hit by a bus. The incident took place at the intersection of Ti Rakau Dr and Chapel Rd around 3.30pm on Monday. The teenager is still in hospital in a stable condition according to a spokesperson from Middlemore Hospital. The hospital is unable to disclose what injuries the boy sustained. A police spokesperson says that initial enquiries suggest there is likely to be no charges laid in relation to this matter. Principal of Botany Downs secondary College Karen Brinsden says: “The boy was admitted to Middlemore Hospital where he is being treated for his injuries. His father has shared with us that he will be okay all things considered. We continue to encourage our students to be aware of their surroundings and to follow the rules of the road at all times.”

If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise. By the woods, we mean Star of the Sea Park, and by surprise, we mean a brilliant performance from Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre. A cast of 25 students between the ages of 15 and 20 will perform The Insect Play for four nights only – the culmination of eight weeks of hard work. In The Insect Play, a tramp/narrator falls asleep in the woods and dreams of observing a range of insects that stand in for various human characteristics in terms of their lifestyle and morality: the flighty, vain butterfly; the obsequious self-serving dung beetle and the ants, whose increasingly mechanised behaviour leads to a militaristic society. The anthropomorphised insects closely mimic post-war human society. HCYT deputy principal Kelly Raos says they deliver about eight productions a year of varying levels, however outdoor productions only take place every two years. “Performing outdoors at Star of the Sea Park is an amazing opportunity for the older students to experience the magic and added challenge of live, outdoor theatre,” she said. ■■ THE INSECT PLAY – performs outdoors at HCYT, 29 Granger Road, Howick on Thursday March 1, Friday March 2, Saturday March 3 and Sunday March 4 at 7.30pm. Tickets $10. n Tuesday, the National Party elected Simon Bridges as our new leader and reelected Paula Bennett as deputy leader. As the party’s Chief Whip, it was my job to run the election process on the day. We had five candidates who ran for leadership with each making a strong case for how we can build on our current strengths as we head towards 2020. Our party was able to have a widespread discussion about how we best act to hold this gov-

ernment to account and come up with policies that will help Kiwi families to succeed. This showed just how strong the depth of talent in our Caucus is and how energised our party is to keep pushing for ideas to make New Zealand a better place to live, work and raise a family. Our Caucus voted and elected Simon Bridges as leader and I am excited about what the future holds for our party and for New Zealand. Simon will do a very good job. Our focus now is simple; we

need to work together as a Caucus and party to come up with ideas to improve the lives of New Zealanders. I want to thank the other candidates for putting their names forward and adding their voices to this process. I also want to thank Bill English for his incredible 27 years as a Member of Parliament, National Party Leader and Prime Minister. Our party would not be in as strong a position without Bill’s leadership. Jami-Lee Ross, MP for Botany

Congratulations to the Howick Village Association for hosting the first ole’ Howick Hoe Down event where town meets country. The fun, family event with plenty of entertainment for kids and adults alike, was hosted on Saturday on Picton Street. Times Newspapers gave away a prize for the best window display at the event. Equally successful was the action-packed Howick Lions Summer Festival hosted on Sunday at the Lloyd Elsmore Park. The fun community event on a bright, sunny day was well-organised and had a great turnout.

Brothers Luke and William Davis won first and second place in both the sand saucer and vegetable animal competition organised by Avenrose Florists.

people person. I believe you’re someone who likes to organise events, and would enjoy being the face of the association to council organisations, customers and stakeholders in our community. Someone like you understands the importance of keeping well informed of changes in laws, rules and procedures that can affect the smooth functioning of a public organisation like the Association. You have worked to build your skills as a manager. Your formal and your informal education, has been a lifelong search to understand and experience which has taught you how to do your best work. One of the world’s greatest sales trainers, Zig Zigler, said, “You can have everything in life if you help others get what they want”. Also defines good management. Obviously, this is a great position and super location surrounded by hard-working committed business people. The community loves this place

as well because every business that operates here has earned their way in. We value thoroughness and the ability to focus so I have put a special word in this paragraph to weed out the sloppy people, half-hearted people, inattentive people and people without a sense of humour. Anyone skimming through job descriptions and blindly blasting out resumes won’t see this line. But you are actually reading this job description, aren’t you? Nicely done. Put the word “Zig” in the subject line of your reply and I’ll give your resume the same respect you’ve given this job description I’ll actually read it. Any application that does not have Zig in the subject line will go directly into the trash. I am Ron Larson, representing Howick Village Business Association, looking forward to reading your resume. ■ Send your resume to: manager@ howickvillage.co.nz.

You won’t read about this job in the classifieds because I’m looking for a manager who’s not looking for a job. Maybe it’s you. Are you the kind of manager who enjoys making other people happy? T

he East Auckland Ministers’ Association kicked off 2018 with a new name, a new programme and a new chairperson, but with the same desire to serve the east Auckland community. Newly appointed chairperson Pastor Peter Morton unveiled the new name at the East Auckland Ministers’ Association’s 2018 launch event with around 50 local ministers in attendance. “We wanted our name to reflect the breadth of church involvement stretching from Pakuranga to Flat Bush across nearly 70 congregations, all doing great work and making a difference in their communities.” The breakfast event was hosted by Willow Park Christian Camp in Eastern Beach, a site familiar to many who have enjoyed the Camp’s hospitality and stunning beachside location at school and church camps as well as in using its convention centre facilities. Pastor Luke Brough shared learnings gleaned from the last 30 plus years as Senior Pastor to Elim Christian Centre in Botany Road. Pastor Brough described the early years meeting in Howick Intermediate School, then establishing its Botany Road presence on the edge of what was then a rural location on the edge of Howick, through to its multisite presence as a church, school and ministry college in 2018.

AUCKLAND’S FUTURE IS IN YOUR HANDS We have some big decisions to make that will affect Auckland, and we need your help to make them. From transport to the environment and the priorities in your local area, now is the time to have your say. It’s easy to find out more and give your feedback online, or attend a local event.

The 2018 Executive (from left to right) Rev Richard Waugh, Association Chairperson Pastor Peter Morton, Rev Brett Jones and Pastor Mark Van Wijk. Absent: Mike Turinsky. Times photo Wayne Martin

When asked what his secret to success and longevity in the role was Pastor Brough responded, “It’s all about staying true to the vision of what you’re doing. But don’t take yourself too seriously. Find balance. Go fishing!” The Ministers’ Association will continue its monthly gatherings in 2018 with a refreshed programme including a range of speakers from across church and community. Pastor Morton believes it’s important for local church ministers to develop strong relationships to provide a foundation for serving the community together. “It’s important to us as churches that we’re really getting involved and making a great contribution into our commu-

nity. So in addition to bringing pastors and ministers together, we’re also looking to hear from and work alongside local leaders in education, government, medicine and social services.” The association will also continue running a sunrise service on Easter Sunday (April 1) on Stockade Hill which is a meaningful experience for many across the community. Ministers from the association will also continue to support the Anzac services run on Stockade Hill which have become very popular with the east Auckland community in recent years. The next meeting of the association is on Thursday March 22, 8:30am-9:30am at The River Christian Church.

Having trouble with your arthritic hips or knees?

Mr Habib Rahman, General and Bariatric Surgeon. Enjoyment of life is lost due to lack of ability to part-take in sports and activities. Obesity is a huge burden on individuals, societies, governments and the country due to health budgets, job productivity and quality of life. There are multiple factors in the cause of obesity, but the major cause is an imbalance in calories consumed and calories expended. Globally there is increased consumption of energy dense food; food rich in calorie content (fats and sugars) and an increase in physical inactivity due to the sedentary nature of many forms e.g., better modes of transportation and urbanisation. The policy makers, community leaders and all individuals should be alarmed by this killer epidemic. Each individual is responsible for their health and should take heed and do something about it today. Mr Habib Rahman is a General and Bariatric Surgeon. He consults at Ormiston Surgeons, Ormiston Hospital, Botany Junction and can be contacted on (09) 277 8249. What is Obesity? Obesity is defined as excess accumulation of fat in the body. It is a very serious health issue for individuals, communities and countries. The world has never seen a greater health epidemic than the current world obesity epidemic. In 2014 according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) report 1.9 billion people were overweight and the trend of global obesity has doubled since 1980. New Zealand unfortunately is not a clean green country when it comes to obesity. We are the third fattest nation after USA and Mexico in the OECD nations. One in three adults above the age of 15 years is obese (31 per cent) and one in nine children aged 2-14 years are also obese (11 per cent). Obesity causes severe and chronic diseases, certain cancers and premature death. These are diabetes mellitus, obstructive sleep apnoea, and cardiovascular diseases including hypertension, heart diseases and stroke, musculoskeletal disorders especially osteoarthritis which is a highly disabling degenerative disease of the joints. Obstructive sleep apnoea is a condition which involves the stoppage of regular breathing during sleep. This is because of redundant fatty tissue at the back of the throat which results in lack of oxygen to the brain. This then jolts the body to kick start breathing again. Sleep apnoea results in broken sleep, tiredness and random falling asleep during the day. Certain cancers are caused by obesity, such as endometrial, breast, ovarian, prostate, liver, gallbladder and colon. Obesity leads to discrimination in society, employment, travel and various aspects of life. It is associated with poor self-image, lack of confidence and can often lead to depression and suicide.

Welcome to the Ormiston Weight Loss Service. Our service is intended to offer our community a surgical choice and clinical support, to assist in taking ownership of your health and moving forward to a greater place of wellness. Bariatric Surgery assists in weight loss and may be recommended as a last resort when diet, exercise and medication have not been successful and if obesity related conditions such as heart disease, asthma, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea and type II diabetes

Boat ramp

In early January the boat ramp in Half Moon Bay suffered damage thanks to a storm coupled with a king tide. The broken pontoons were taken away and that’s been it. There appears to be no notice to boaties given as to when they will be repaired. Just wondering if the Times could perhaps investigate this one further. I’m like other boaties, I know, unable to use the ramp in its current form without some degree of difficulty and then therefore…risk. Once you start jumping in the water trying to hold a 20ft+ boat straight so it will go back on the trailer with wind, current and other craft….too hard…and dangerous.

Board needs to get on with it We share the concerns of many residents in Cockle Bay, Mellon’s Bay, Howick Beach and the Eastern and Buckland’s Beaches, over the recent storm effects on our beaches which we have long-maintained are core community assets. Residents become concerned and rightly so, when little is done to protect those assets. In July2017 the Bucklands and Eastern Beaches Residents and Ratepayers held a public meeting inviting council, Howick Local Board members and the council coastal erosion team. At this meeting concerns were

STOCKTAKE The board’s excuse that it does not have money to start to resolve the issues is not quite correct and in our opinion is a fob-off, according to the Bucklands and Eastern Beaches Residents’ and Ratepayers. Times photo Wayne Martin

raised by the public about the effects of erosion and flooding from major storm events. There was considerable discussion about what could be done to protect our beaches in the future. Very workable solutions were put to the meeting by Bruce Kendall (admittedly focusing on Buckland and Eastern Beaches but very much applicable to all our beaches). Council officers from the Coastal Erosion Team commented at the time about the quality, scope, and workability of the solutions proposed, and promised to get back to the community, with proposals to address the issues after running their options by the Local Board. Auckland Council’s Coastal Erosion Team presented their options for beach erosion to the Local Board in November 2017 and it would have been reasonable to expect the Local Board to prioritise an action plan on the basis of the report. Regrettably, there has been no such action to date. It is fair to say

that even if a plan had been put into place November/December 2017, it may not have lessened the impact of the storms on our beaches in January. But at the very least they would have plans and options to present to us, rather than knee jerk reactions and inappropriate wall solutions after the event. The board’s excuse that it does not have money to start to resolve the issues is not quite correct and in our opinion is a foboff. The Local Board has a significant amount of money for local discretionary projects well in access of $1 million. It also has a $2.9m discretionary transport budget (roads are at risk from beach erosion). Our message to the Local Board is get on and fix the problems - you have funds and we need you to move!

All for one and one for all

It was a full house at the opening of the New Zealand Mao-Qiang Opera Museum at Yongjie Li’s residence on Sunday. Photo supplied

March is beginning with the opening of our most ambitious community exhibition yet. Over the past few months, Scott Eady has approached local schools, youth groups and businesses with propositions to participate in projects that will become integrated into the exhibition, 1 and ALL. These projects reflect memories Eady has of the area and the people he has come to know that reside in the Howick community. “I visited Uxbridge and the Howick beaches with my parents a few months back,” explains Eady. “My father picked up a sea shell worn by the waves into a napkin-ring form. He reminisced about his years as a Boy Scout. The shell, he told us, was called a ‘woggle’; a loop or ring of leather or cord through which the ends of a Scout’s neckerchief are threaded”. Scout groups from the local area have been invited to contribute their own woggles to a cumulative display and have been encouraged to incorporate their own interpretation of this practical, yet elegant object. They will sit beside a sculpture by Eady, referencing his father’s woggle. Clay workshops have been run at Uxbridge in the lead up to the exhibition, offering anyone from the community the opportunity to create a portrait from clay-sourced locally. Eady’s friend is a drainlayer and

gathered the material from a building site nearby. Clay will also be on offer in the gallery for those who would like to contribute a portrait to the display. These projects, and others, will come together over the course of the exhibition to create a space for exploration and consideration, incorporating the common threads continuously relevant in Eady’s practice, emphasising the act of making and encounter, operating somewhere in the realm between object, space and audience. Join us on Saturday March 3 at 2.30pm for the opening of this exhibition. Zoe Hoeberigs Manager Curator Malcolm Smith Gallery

e could have easily bought a bigger house with the money but he invested it (around $200,000) in a precious art collection. So passionate is Yongjie Li, specialist advisor, Community Empowerment Auckland Council about Chinese Opera that he has accommodated an art museum at his home. The community worker celebrated his birthday and the Chinese Lunar New Year at the weekend with the opening of New Zealand Shandong Art Gallery and the New Zealand MaoQiang Opera Museum at his residence in Highland Park. Mao-Qiang is a local folk opera style from the Jiazhou Peninsula of Eastern China. Presenting the collection for future generations, he said: “It took me about 30 years to collect

the old records, cassette tapes, historical articles, drama brochures and costumes at the cost of half a million Chinese dollars. “This collection contains approximately 600 hours of audio and video records covering the Mao-Qiang stageperformances from the 1950s to present. I feel privileged to bring these valuable, historical records for protection and display to the New Zealanders; but also feel sad as the national cultural essence has lost its popularity in its hometown,” he said. The living room was packed with special guests that included influencers of the Chinese Community, lovers of art and opera, Chinese authors as well as David Collings chair of Howick Local Board along with Adele White and Mike Turinsky, members of the Howick Local Board. While Mr Collings had high praise for Yongjie’s commitment

for the collection, Mr Turinsky admitted that being a migrant himself “when you come to a new country you leave your heritage behind. “I got a little emotional when I saw the heritage collection that reminds me of my home and the heritage I have left behind”. Adele White said she was moved by Youngjie’s passion to celebrate his heritage and how privileged she felt to share the beautiful treasures showcased at his home, which could possibly be housed at the Te Papa Museum someday. With congratulatory messages flowing in from different parts of China, Karen Johns, Yongie’s former boss at Manukau City Cuncil, said she had done many things in her life “but the best one so far was employing Yongjie who is a perfect bridge between cultures and is passionate about reaching out to local communities”.

Tax changes aim at speculation R

evenue Minister Stuart Nash has confirmed the bright-line test on residential property sales will be extended from two years to five years in legislation currently making its way through Parliament. Mr Nash will introduce a Supplementary Order Paper to the Taxation (Annual Rates for 2017– 18, Employment and Investment Income, and Remedial Matters) Bill to give effect to the changes, which were signalled prior to the election. “The extension of the previous government’s bright-line test will help dampen property speculation and make homes more affordable,” Mr Nash says. “The previous government required income tax to be paid on any gains from residential property sold within two years of acquisition, with some exceptions. “The extension means that profits from residential investment properties which are

less attractive. “We need investment which grows the economy and creates jobs, not the sort of investment which distorts the residential housing market. This measure will bring fairness back into the tax system,” Mr Nash says. “Reducing speculative demand will also help improve housing affordability for owner-occupiers. Current exemptions from the bright line test will remain. This includes the exemption for the main home of owner-occupiers of residential property.” The extension to the brightline test will apply to residential investment properties purchased from the date on which the bill receives the Royal Assent, which is expected in March. The passage of the bill will also enable the Tax Working Group to factor the change into any consideration of a comprehensive capital gains tax. ■■ For more information on the Bill, see http://taxpolicy.ird.govt. nz

As we start to leave behind a hot but wet kiwi summer, for many autumn is a fantastic time to be in the garden. With cooler mornings and evenings (no one is missing that humidity!) gardening can become pleasant once more. With the ground becoming moist, but still warm, it is ideal for planting trees and shrubs that will have time to establish before winter. Early season annuals start to arrive in store, such as pansies, polyanthus, calendula, poppies and snapdragon which will make a welcome change to your pots and garden beds. It’s also a great time to get some spring bulbs in the ground. There is a myriad of spring bulbs in store now, both in variety and colour. There’s always new varieties on offer to inspire, from rich plum colours perfect for a striking contrast against white and pastels, through to the eternally cheerful favorites like daffodils and freesias. Remember if you stagger your bulb planting over several weeks it will ensure you get a longer flowering period in your garden so it’s worthwhile to find out which varieties flower early in the season and those that flower later in spring. Ask our experts in store to help you select what you need. In the vege patch, plant seedlings of cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, beetroot, winter lettuce, Brussels sprouts, spinach, carrots, leeks, silver beet and winter herbs, like parsley, chives, rosemary and mint. You’ll be eating gourmet food from your own garden all through the seasons.

A new website to help consumers make good decisions when buying or selling property, has been welcomed by Consumer NZ. Industry regulator the Real Estate Authority (REA) has launched settled.govt.nz as a source of information and guidance for homebuyers and sellers. “Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest financial decisions many Kiwis will ever make, with the potential to hugely impact their life,” Consumer NZ deputy CEO Karen McDonald says. “An independent resource, such as settled. govt.nz, goes a long way to help Kiwis make informed decisions, and help them avoid blunders that could cost them dearly in the long run.” According to the REA’s latest survey, just two out of five Kiwis are confident the real estate industry is professional. About one in five is confident it’s transparent. In 2017, real estate agents providing incorrect or misleading information topped the issues raised in consumer complaints and inquiries to the REA. Failure to disclose defects or other important information about a property was the second most common issue raised. Advertising faux pas, poor customer service, and incorrect sale and purchase agreements rounded out the top five. Mrs McDonald says a recent Consumer NZ survey shows how heavily decisions around

Blues show real promise G

enuine promise overcame the disappointment of a first round 41-34 Super Rugby loss to the Highlanders, but the Blues desperately need a win against the Chiefs at Eden Park on Friday night to confirm their improvement. A solid forward performance backed up by some touches of brilliance from Akira Ioane, his brother Rieko, Bryn Gatland and Matt Duffie offers hope despite suffering their 12th loss in a row to a NZ franchise. Akira Ioane was a national sevens star but, unlike his younger brother, his immense natural gifts have not made him the force he is capable of becoming in the 15-man game. Part of the reason is his body position has been too high and he has too often taken ruck ball flat-footed. There was a big improvement against the Highlanders when he was rewarded with two touchdowns and he will be even more dangerous when he

roves wider in the manner of Kieran Read, makes breaks and sets up tries for others. With Jerome Kaino headed overseas at the end of this season, the athletic Ioane needs to continue his improvement if he is to challenge Liam Squire and Vaea Fifita as Kaino’s successor. Another major plus for the Blues against the Highlanders was the form of third string first-five Gatland who capped an exceptional first half with a sharp try. Gatland doesn’t have the tricky footwork of Stephen Perofeta but does have much the same goal-kicking prowess and rugby nous of NZ Maori first-five Otere Black in taking smart options. With Blues newcomers Perofeta and Black suffering pre-season injuries, the coolheaded Gatland is taking his chance to impress, just as he did in the opening match against last year’s British and Irish Lions, coached by his father

Tough as teak Moala is an immensely strong player but still needs to develop his passing skills if the Blues backline is to produce the cohesion necessary to win big games. He is also a good winger and the option exists for him to switch positions with Rieko Ioane should coach Tana Umaga want to take that gamble. It is one that would interest All Blacks head coach Steve Hansen who believes centre will eventually be Ioane’s best position. Meanwhile with Brad Webber, Charlie Ngatai, Anton Lienert-Brown and McKenzie featuring in the Chiefs backline, the Blues backs won’t be the only ones producing the fireworks. The Chiefs also have a strong scrum capable of causing big problems if the Blues’ big men don’t muscle up. Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

Warren. What he brings to a Blues squad big on flash but small on substance is a level-headedness the franchise badly needs. On Friday night he will face a fast and elusive opponent in the mercurial Damian McKenzie, who tried too much and was outplayed by Richie Mo’unga in the Chiefs 45-23 loss to the Crusaders last weekend. With so much strike power coming from Rieko Ioane and Matt Duffie on the wings, the extent of their effectiveness will depend on how well the Sonny Bill Williams/George Moala midfield combination clicks. Having taken time to recover from the severe Achilles injury he suffered at the Rio Olympics, it wasn’t until the All Blacks northern tour late last year that Williams showed his real class with straight running, strong defence and his famed offloads.

Cricketing star brings F45 studio to Howick

HPK top junior club in NZ The Howick Pakuranga Swim Club put on a dominant display recently at the annual Junior Festival Championships. Competition was fierce among the 400 swimmers, however HPK still walked away with 68 medals in total as well as claiming the title of top club for another year. Club captain Ella Crowe secured the first gold medal of the meet by dominating the 400m freestyle to win by more than 10 seconds. Not to be outdone, the club’s top male swimmer Chris Jiang repeated the feat by taking out the boys 400m freestyle by more than 10 seconds, rocketing HPK to lead over the competition after just two events. There were some stand-out swimmers over the weekend, including Mulan Chan See with 12 golds and one silver, Ella Crowe with four gold, five silver and three bronze and Chris Jiang who dominated his age group with eight gold, five silver and a bronze. These swimmers went on to win their age groups and rank first in New Zealand. Other medallists include Miandi Oosthuizen, Anna Ye, Julian Ling, Taanmay Annappa, Danielle Asiata, Daniel Cieplinski, Ezanda Green, Eric Yang and Daniel Loh. It was another very successful year for the Howick Pakuranga Swimming Club which once again proved to be the top junior club in New Zealand.

changed and players who aren’t physically fit will also struggle with performing mentally. “F45 meant I could manage my injuries [with] short and sharp sessions. Now I’m getting older I’m interested in getting the most out of my workouts and not screwing my body up. “Cricket’s become more professional and T20’s taken over international cricket. You need to be fitter, you need to be more agile and ...it’s more of a power sport than it was potentially 15-20 years ago.” McClenaghan says the rise in social media and online keyboard warrior abuse has made it harder to develop a cricket career in the spotlight. “You can already see with young kids, how much harder it is day to day. As you get older you start getting thicker skin but when people start abusing 16/17 year olds starting out, that’s not okay.” He says it’s time to make a stand and stick up for the next generation coming through. “I think it’s going to be harder for young cricketers coming up with social media, career’s going to be in the spotlight and everyone will have access to them. “If there’s ways of raising awareness and having ramifications down the line...if we identify it now then hopefully something happens with it,” he says.

e’s a renowned international cricketer but he still calls Howick home. Mitch McClenaghan began his illustrious career on the pitch of the Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club many years ago. Since then, he’s gone on to play for the Auckland Aces, Black Caps and in the Indian Premier League. These days, he’s focusing on domestic T20 after turning down a contract with New Zealand Cricket, but he’s still involved heavily at helping out at his local club - a “Howick Pakuranga Cricket player through and through,” he says. He’s also just helped bring the latest exercise craze out east with an F45 studio in Howick, following in the footsteps of his Sydney Thunder teammate Shane Watson, who co-owns multiple F45 gyms in Australia. McClenaghan, 31, says he was drawn to F45 while recovering from a knee injury. “[I was] trying to find a way to stay fit throughout my career. I was massively into crossfit but when I started international cricket I found it wasn’t something I was capable of maintaining because it was time-consuming and needing to be technical as well which brought injuries into my cricket.” He says the intensity of cricket has
