Quax, the pathfinder By IVAN AGNEW

D

ick Quax was a straight talking character whose Dutch stubborness and determination in the 1970s led New Zealand distance runners back to the glory days of Murray Halberg and Peter Snell a decade earlier. Coming to this country with his parents as a sixyear-old, Quax developed into a brave, stylish runner who claimed a silver medal at the 1970 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games 1500m behind 1968 Mexico City Olympic champion Kip Keino. He was the only one with the courage to go with the great Kenyan’s searing pace and at one stage actually led him. An outspoken individual who berated his fellow Kiwis for sitting on pacemakers like himself rather than attempt to reach international standards, Quax was the pathfinder who set Rod Dixon and John Walker on the road to glory. Not that he gave them an easy ride. On one occasion upon fending Dixon off in a Wanganui mile, he retorted to Dixon’s protest by telling he needed to get used to it if he wanted to became a true international. “You are just a boy,” he scoffed. That boy went on to claim an Olympic bronze medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics behind Finland’s Pekka Vasala and Keino and narrowly missed another bronze at the 1976 Montreal Olympics when Quax claimed silver behind Lasse Viren’s repeat gold. That was also the Olympics in which Walker followed history’s first sub 3 minute 50 seconds mile of 3m 39.4s in 1975 with gold in the 1500m in the wake of Jack Lovelock (Berlin 1939) and Peter Snell (Tokyo 1964). Like Dixon, an emerging Walker was not spared Quax’s anger when, during an argument in 1973 he told him, “You won’t make a runner’s arsehole.” Yet that same year it was Quax who used his influence with European and British promoters to give Walker entry to the European circuit. Such was Walker’s progress that he and winner Filbert Bayi broke Jim Ryun’s world 1500m record at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games.” Unfortunately, injury prevented Quax from competing after he had dominated the European circuit over 5000m the previous year. Although there had been some early disagreements, the three middle distance musketeers of New Zealand athletes became firm friends. Like 1983 New York winner Dixon, Quax stepped up to the marathon with such success than he set a world mark on making his debut. Later he became a coach and a Manukau and Auck➤ Tributes P4, P5 land councillor. Dick Quax was an outspoken individual who berated his fellow Kiwis for sitting on pacemakers like himself rather than attempt to reach international standards. Photo supplied

eachlands couple Steph Skilton and Brody Cleave had a wedding with a difference early today. They won a competition - WeddingTossers - with radio station The Edge giving them a free wedding and a honeymoon in Bora Bora in French Polynesia - but there was a tiny catch... the wedding proceedings were dictated on the flip of a coin. The couple had several losses with the coin flip shared on air each morning before the wedding.

Instead of a horse and carriage, Steph’s arrival was by Zorb (with water); instead of a wedding dress she had to wear a grim reaper outfit; instead of confetti they got spaghetti. You get the picture. The wedding was in Matakana this morning and was broadcast live. Skilton is a Football Fern and was based in New York with Syracuse University. Skilton has competed at the U17 World Cup (2010), U20 World Cup (2012), U20 World Cup (2014), along with the

He has played sport at a high-level representing Auckland for rugby at a young age, New Zealand AFL and represented Oceania in the U18 Australian National Championships. In a recent Facebook post Skilton wrote wrote: “Can’t wait to marry you Brody Cleave - there’s not a day where I’m not smiling and laughing with you!”

Firefighter steps up for challenge

ADVERTISERS

Dannemora’s Andy Tomlinson is already looking at next year’s Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge having this month clocked the second fastest time to tackle the 1103 steps of Auckland’s 328m Sky Tower. The fastest firefighter and winner for his eighth year in a row was Josh Harrison of Mt Wellington Fire Brigade who set a new record for the event at 8 minutes and 11 seconds. Tomlinson, who spent 18 months at the Howick Station, completed the climb in 9m19s, while Gavin Mason

of Queenstown Airport was third with time of 9m34s. Mason’s time was all the more remarkable given that last year he was diagnosed with the rare auto-immune disease Guillain– Barré syndrome and was barely able to climb one flight of stairs. The fastest woman up the tower was Ady McKenzie of Whangarei Fire Brigade with a time of 13m 12s. Contestants attack the stairs wearing up to 25kg of firefighting kit. Tomlinson, who is 195.5cm (6’5”) tall and weighs 95kg, admits the

training regime was gruelling. He was hitting Proximity Apartments in Manukau which has a modest 15 floors. “Just to add to the training prior the event, the stair climbing at Proximity, indoor rowing and Assault airbike were my main training tools. “This is with the team at Crossfit East Tamaki, on Nandina Ave.” This was second attempt. Last year he was third. “For me, next year I’m keen on improving my time.” Results from the previous year

gives the contestants “poll” position for the challenge. Firefighters taking part raised more than $1.25 million for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand. Some 950 firefighters from New Zealand, Australia and the US took part.

Frustrated boaties want new pontoons

By Therese Henkin

F

rustration is mounting as boaties spend another week without the pontoons down at Half Moon Bay. The pontoons were damaged beyond repair during the January 5 storm and were removed shortly after the storm for safety reasons. Twenty weeks later and local resident Stewart McLaren says he’s still unable to launch his boat at Half Moon Bay because its larger size means launching it off the fixed concrete ramp risks damaging the fibreglass hull. He has reached out to Auckland Council and says he’s been told they might have to wait a further six months before the pontoons are replaced. McLaren presented his case to the Howick Local Board last week and asked why it is taking so long to repair “a key sports facility?” He says since the boat ramp was re-opened on January 12, the pontoons have been missing leaving only the concrete boat ramp. “If a ramp is concrete it’s best that you don’t have the boat intercept the concrete ramp for obvious reasons – damage to the propeller, to the hull or whatever,” he says. He says for anyone with a reasonable sized boat, launching off the ramp as a solo-fisherman is near impossible and even for team of two, launching a bigger boat with-

out the pontoons is tricky. “The current process if you have two people is that once the boat is in the water, one person is left in control of keeping the boat from hitting the concrete ramp, while the other parks the car and trailer,” he says. “Assuming one of them has managed to hold it against the wind and the tide, the second individual has to find a way to get onto the boat without letter it touch the concrete ramp. “Either he has to wade in up to his chest if it’s full tide and climb onto the back of the boat or somehow manoeuvre the boat sideways so he can then climb on the boat sideways, again without the boat touching the ramp.”

Auckland Council head of operational management & maintenance Agnes McCormack says the pontoons needed to be removed to enable structural inspections and were found irreparable. “New pontoon units, fixing hardware and sleeves to extend the height of piles have been ordered. This will enable reinstatement with every effort being made to futureproof respective structures, such that any future storm events have a minimal impact on subsequent operation and use,” she says. “Dive inspections of the existing piles have also been completed. This has identified that the concrete boat ramp has been undermined by the storm surges and will require repairs. In addition, she says six of the 14 piles are too damaged to be reused and will also need to be replaced. The other piles will be strengthened and lengthened by installing sleeves over them to minimise the impact of future storm event, she says. “We appreciate that this facility is an extremely popular boat launching facility and are doing everything we can to get the new pontoons installed as quickly as we can. The replacement of the new pontoons and pile extensions are expected to be completed before Labour Weekend 2018.” Labour weekend is 42 weeks after the January storm.

Cop allegedly punched teen during arrest By Therese Henkin Police have defended the actions of a police officer who was seen to punch a teen in the ribs during an arrest. A video of the arrest was posted to social media by the teen’s father Geoff Garnett following the incident in Highland Park on Sunday at around 3.30pm. Garnett said his 13-yearold son, Geoff Jr, had been aggressively arrested and believed it was for not wearing a helmet while riding his bike. He says the video prompted him to lay a formal complaint. Wendy Spiller, Area Commander Counties Manukau East, says the officer is shown carrying out a tactic often used on suspects resisting arrest. Spiller says police had received a number of calls regarding the behaviour of a group of teenagers, with a member of the public telling police the boys were aggressive and trying to fight others. “[Police staff] tried to speak with the teenagers however the main aggressor, who was 13-years-old, quickly tried to get away from police on a pushbike,” she says. “[He] was biking into traffic and ran through a red light. The officer managed to borrow another bike and followed him for several minutes and caught up to him.”

Spiller says people began filming on their cell phones and it can be seen in the video police trying to handcuff the teenager who was resisting arrest. The video shows the boy on his bike, followed by a police officer, also on a bike. The police officer dismounts the bike and is seen following the teen on foot. The boy is then intercepted by a second officer, pulled off his bike and is arrested and handcuffed. One officer struggles to get the teen’s left arm out from under his stomach and is seen in the video to apparently punch the teen in the ribs. “The officer is shown carrying out a tactic that can be used to get an offender to release their arm so that we can put handcuffs on them.” Spiller says it is not uncommon for police to be filmed on cellphone cameras during an incident and have it posted on social media, but says often these videos don’t show the full picture. “More often than not these videos will only show a portion of what has happened and perhaps not surprisingly, rarely show the full circumstances, such as our staff being assaulted, abused or spat at.” The teen is facing charges of disorderly behaviour, failing to stop, dangerous driving and resisting police.

A Tribute to Dick Quax

Bach Musica is back Bach Musica NZ continues its 2018 concert series with two very distinct composers of the early 19th century in the grandiose setting and great acoustic of their musical residency at Auckland Town Hall on Sunday, June 3 at 5pm. Bach Musica NZ is delighted to have two-times Wallace National Piano Competition winner and next Gen star pianist Lixin Zhang to open the evening with Frédéric Chopin’s Piano Concerto No 2. This piece, composed by the young Chopin in 1829 even before he had finished his formal education, was designed to display his mastery of the instrument. Fittingly, it is the 16-year old already highly-awarded virtuoso Lixin who presents the work of this bold, innovative pianist-turned-composer. In the second half of the evening, Bach Musica NZ introduces to Auckland audiences a New Zealand Premiere of the moving Requiem by Camille Saint-Saëns. Once described as the French Mendelssohn, the composer completed this commissioned work in eight days. For this concert Bach Musica NZ is delighted to present four of

New Zealand’s finest national and international soloists: soprano Sophie Sparrow, Dame Malvina Foundation Alumna; mezzo Kate Spence, NZ Mobil Song Quest prizewinner and Winston Churchill memorial Fellowship holder, international tenor Oliver Sewell, Resident Artist at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and Samoan bassbaritone Joel Amosa, one of the country’s rising opera stars. Under international conductor and music director Rita Paczian this promises to be a night not to be missed.

nstead of my usual column today, I wanted to give a few thoughts and reflections on our local Councillor Dick Quax, who passed away early on Monday morning. I have had the privilege of knowing Dick for a number of years, and have worked alongside him in my role as the local MP since September’s election. Dick was first and foremost a loving husband to his wife Roxanne, and dedicated father to his three children, Tania, Jacob, and Theo. He was a legendary Kiwi sportsman and a formidable advocate for Howick and for Auckland during his many years of public service. Dick Quax set a high standard

A fundraising evening held for Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association last week at Howick Little Theatre attracted a full house. Howick Little Theatre treated the audience to its thriller The House by the Lake – A shortcut to death and a supper. Directed by Andrew Gordon, the season ran for the month of May. The fundraiser supports hard work by the Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association (HRRA) and its lengthy legal battle to save our precious views of the Hauraki Gulf from Stockade Hill. The funds are to go towards the legal bills, most of which were covered by funds raised in the community. “The HRRA is grateful for the support, energy and enthusiasm the Defencibles bring to Saving Stockade Hill views,” the HRRA said.

“At last count they have over 649 followers on their Save Stockade Hill views Facebook page. Visit www.facebook.com/ stockadehill/. “Many people believe the battle was won and that the danger is over. Sadly it’s not!” the site says.

The History

• Sept 2013 Unitary Plan provided for no zoning changes to the area surrounding Stockade Hill. • These properties were then secretly “upzoned” to allow high rise development. • After mass public protest, Auckland Council decisively voted against changes • But the unnotified upzonings were never actually withdrawn. • We went to court, losing on a technicality. But the judge

recommended a remedy be sought. • Council agree to develop a plan change to fix it. • The result offered few concessions and the high-rise zones were still there. • April 2018, we appealed the proposal. • A decision by Auckland Council on this matter is now expected after 1st June 2018. “What can you do?” the site asks. “We need your help - we need a show of force. Get your friends and family to follow our Facebook page.” Val Lott, who has been a part of the fundraising campaign, said: “I’d like to add a big thank you to all the many Howick businesses who sponsored prizes for the raffles, in particular New World who donated two coffee machines valued at $100 each.”

lympian Dick Quax has died after long and brave battle with cancer. Quax, 70, an Auckland councillor of Pakuranga, won a silver medal in the 5000m at Montreal in 1976. The Howick Local Board has expressed its sadness at the passing of Mr Quax, a Howick ward councillor. He died on Monday. Deputy chair Katrina Bungard said: “Dick has been a strong advocate for Howick during his time at Auckland Council and as councillor on the former Manukau City Council and he will certainly be missed. “Our thoughts and condolences are with his wife and family at this sad time.” Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross said: ‘My old friend and council running mate, Dick Quax has sadly lost his last race today (Monday),” “What a guy - Olympic hero, champion for his community, someone who put his blood and sweat into everything he did. “Dick was a politician with staunch views, but the conversations we had that stick in my mind the most are the many, many discussions we had about his boys Jacob and Theo as they grew up. RIP mate.” Sharon Stewart, Auckland Councillor for Howick expressed her deep sadness at the news. “Dick Quax was a long-time friend, colleague, and fellow advocate for Howick, and I was shocked to hear he had passed away this morning,” says Mrs Stewart. “My thoughts and condolences are with Dick’s family; his wife Roxanne, and his three children, Tania, Jacob, and Theo. Through hundreds of calls and text messages since the news broke, I know the people of Howick grieve with them at this difficult time and join me in thanking Dick for his service to our community over so many years.” “I feel particularly lucky that I had the chance to serve alongside him in Auckland Council and can personally attest to his unwavering commitment to the job, even as he battled cancer. being completed ahead of schedule earlier this year and was determined to ensure the people of Howick were represented even through his illness.” “I will miss his friendship and counsel dearly. Howick has lost one of its best today.” Rev Richard Waugh worked with Mr Quax for a time. “Dick was always a focussed person. He brought many learnings from his athletic success to local government and community service and I always admired his determination and passion. I enjoyed serving with him on the Pakuranga Community Board. He was one of our local heroes and characters and will be very much missed.” Mayor Phil Goff said: “We are all saddened to hear of the passing of Dick Quax today. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Roxanne and his children. “Dick served as a councillor, first on the Manukau City Council and then on the new Auckland Council, representing Howick Ward. “He was a passionate contributor in council debates, advocating strongly on behalf of his constituents.

“We remember him also as one of New Zealand’s finest athletes, representing us at the Olympics and international events. “On behalf of Auckland Council, we offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time,” said Mayor Goff. Councillor Dick Quax began his local government tenure in 2001 when he was elected to the Manukau City Council in the Pakuranga ward. He served three terms on the Manukau council, returning in 2004 to represent the new Botany-Clevedon ward. In the 2007 local body elections he ran for Mayor of Manukau City, losing his bid to Len Brown. He was chair of Manukau City Council’s Community Safety Committee and lead the council’s ‘Safe City’ portfolio, this included representing the council’s Civil Defence responsibilities. Cr Quax was elected to Auckland Council in 2011 following a by-election to replace Jami-Lee Ross who resigned to become a Member of Parliament. He was re-elected, as a Howick ward councillor, alongside Cr Sharon Stewart, in 2013 and 2016. He was Chair of the Auckland Council’s Tenders and Procurement Sub-Committee during the 2010-2013 term. Cr Quax was an unstinting advocate for Howick, Pakuranga and the eastern suburbs. He is known for his strong positions on high-density housing, public transportation and Auckland’s Unitary Plan. Cr Quax was also known as a steward of ratepayer funds, which was a particular focus in his 2011 maiden speech. “My platform for the Howick by-election was based around the need for council to focus on its core activities and spend our ratepayers’ money wisely and to make our region affordable so that everyone can enjoy living here,” Cr Quax said. He is survived by his wife Roxanne and children Tania, Jacob and Theo. A celebration of his life will be held at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell on Saturday at 1pm. The Times extends its deepest condolences to Mr Quax’s family. ■■ More, Simeon Brown, page 4

Extremely popular with the locals, Elephant Thai has just got a new chef, all the way from Marriott Hotel, Thailand. The chef is known to have very high standards in terms of quality of food and uses just the very authentic Thai ingredients like fresh lemon grass and green chillies— even if it takes him hours to scan the markets. Last heard, he served a group of very happy diners Mussaman Beef, an ancient royal Thai curry which was cooked in coconut milk for over six hours till the beef was absolutely tender. Elephant Thai which first opened its doors in 2005 instantly transports you to Thailand with its unique decor and table of fare.

announcing the arrival of the Royal party. Children were running around shouting, “The Queen is coming! The Queen is coming!” The Queen then walked and chatted with her ‘subjects’. Steampunk who were special visitors to the village brought their own original style and fashion as they partook of High Tea in the Puhi Nui homestead, played croquet on the lawn and mingled with the public. Their extravagant costumes attracted a lot of attention and interest. Children enjoyed the many fun-filled activities including Roll a Penny, Fishing in a Barrel and the Woolsack Toss as well as participating in a Victorian school lesson, rope making, card

decoration and butter churning. Interacting with Cherry the Clown who strode about the village on exceedingly long legs (stilts) was a highlight for many children. As a special acknowledgement of the royal wedding, many visitors were encouraged to write letters of congratulations to the Royal couple Harry and Meghan. These letters are winging their way to Buckingham Palace with a cover letter inviting Prince Harry and Meghan to visit the Howick Historical Village on their honeymoon to New Zealand later this year. Soldiers fired a five-gun salute in honour of the Queen which caused a flock of ducks on the village pond to rise up simultaneously in flight.

any people woke a little bleary-eyed after sitting up into the early hours to watch the spectacular royal wedding of Prince Harry and his bride Meghan, now Duke and Duchess of Sussex. To continue with the feel-good mood and atmosphere, local people and visitors from far and wide, proceeded to the Howick Historical Village to enjoy the Great British Live Day Street Party on Sunday May 20. There was an incredible vibe at the village which was colourfully decorated with bunting and flags. Bright sunshine and mild autumn weather attracted a wide variety of visitors. Visitors brought their picnic lunches and sat in groups around tables decorated in royal style, with special cakes and sandwiches temptingly placed on tiered cake stands, all within close proximity to a giant replica of Big Ben. The party goers were in royal company as Queen Victoria took tea and cakes on Eckford Homestead’s verandah overlooking her ‘subjects’. Her regal highness, Queen Victoria and her Lady-in-Waiting were then escorted by John Brown, well turned out in his kilt and sporon (with the military in attendance) on a walk-about the village. Young trumpeter, Anthony preceded the group,

Lively Entertainment at Riverhills School’s 50th By MARILYN BAKKER

T

he hardworking staff and pupils of Riverhills Primary School must have groaned when they woke to wet weather on the 12th of May, 2018, the morning of the school’s 50th Jubilee celebrations. Bouncy castles and outdoor activities went by the board as rain settled in. Fortunately forward thinking Principal, Sarah Allen and school staff had a Plan B tucked up their sleeves and moved quickly to get an indoor programme underway. Leading the Powhiri were kaumatua, Daniel Warren

and Hemi Raukura . A group of current pupils welcomed the many visitors to the school with song and dance and made everyone feel at ease. Board member Aaron Tregaskis, congratulated the school on this milestone event and thanked staff and pupils for the successful organisation of the day. Current Principal, Sarah Allen, and Past Principal 1997-2015, Christine Mason’ gave their view of what made Riverhills School such a special place – not bricks and mortar, not educational programmes – much more – it was tangata, tangata, tangata

(people, people, people). The diversity of the school was highlighted, when Sarah spoke of eighteen different cultural groups represented at the school. To reinforce this, pupils gave a fantastic concert of original dance items, dressed in colourful costumes (representing different cultures) they had worked co-operatively, to complete, ready for the day. Sharing memories over a delicious morning tea, past pupils remembered the friendships they formed, the teachers who influenced them and the fun they had outdoors in the playground with their mates.

A delicious and gigantic 50th Jubliee cake was cut by Mrs Annette Tiorori-Thomas, a foundation pupil who is currently a long-serving teacher at Riverhills Primary and the candles blown out by the newest small pupil of the school, Felicia Smith Hughes. A titoki tree was planted, a plaque put in place and three pupils, Jaden Pineda, Dylan Dimagiba and Emerald Flesher read their original poems to the gathered crowd to commemorate this very special occasion. The ceremony finished with the raising of the school flag. For me personally, it was a chance to look back on my

long association with the school from the early seventies as a school committee member, later joining the staff as a teacher. My three children all did their primary school learning at Riverhills Primary and have fond memories of staff, friends and activities there. I have only admiration for Sarah, teachers and pupils

as I look at the beautifully presented classrooms each displaying a high standard of work on the walls and am delighted to learn the school roll is increasing steadily. Congratulations to the pupils, parents and staff of Riverhills Primary School on a job well done and on a successful and enjoyable 50th Jubilee celebration.

A dog lover himself, owner of Ormiston Cafe Sanjay Luthra says it is not only about a new community getting to know each other but also about their fourlegged companions getting an opportunity to meet up and have some bow-wow time. He introduced the idea of doggy happy hours for pet owners to bring along their pets on the first Saturday of the month. He says after seeing many families enjoying quality time at the weekend and their dogs being left behind at home, he created an event where dogs can socialise with each other for a couple of hours and enjoy some treats. “The first time we had almost 40 dogs of all breeds and while some of them were very friendly and played together, others we were more reserved,” he says. “We serve them free dog treats and ‘puppyccinos’ as they join in for some paw-time in the patio outside the cafe. “A lot of times when I am at the cafe I feel bad that I have to leave my dog behind at home so this is a good opportunity for our furry friends to socialise.” The idea of a Yappy Hour was

uckland Council’s 10-year Budget sets out $26.2 billion of investment over the next decade to address critical issues of traffic congestion, housing affordability and protecting the environment. Auckland Mayor Phil Goff on Tuesday released his final proposal. The 10-year Budget proposal: • Largest council transport investment of $12b over the next 10 years (including $4.3b from leveraging the Regional Fuel Tax). • Cleaning up Auckland’s waterways and beaches with new investment of $452 million in stormwater infrastructure through a water quality targeted rate. • Protecting Kauri and our

native flora and fauna with an additional $311m from a natural environment targeted rate to fund pest and disease control. • Adapting to Climate Change and protecting communities with the establishment of a $40m Climate Change Response Fund and an additional $90m for coastal asset management. • Investing in sports and culture by establishing a contestable fund of $120 million for sports and recreation facilities and an additional $20m funding for the Auckland Art Gallery. • Delivering improved social outcomes with the expansion of The Southern Initiative into West Auckland to increase

employment and life skills for young Aucklanders and $475,000 to help Auckland City Mission redevelop its Hobson Street site. • Restricting the average general rate rise to 2.5 per cent for this term of council and continuing Value for Money programme of section 17a reviews and a new corporate property strategy saving $117m to deliver efficiency and effectiveness at council. Mr Goff said: “This build-it budget is going to get Auckland moving with investment of more than $26b over 10 years to reduce transport congestion, unlock greenfield housing development, clean up our beaches and protect our environment.

Grandparents Day at BBPS Grandparents play an important role in their grandchildren’s lives and acknowledging it was Bucklands Beach Primary School that celebrated Grandparents Day on Monday. Grandparents were spoilt as they went back to school to have the time of their lives playing Snakes and Ladder, doing paper cut outs, reading story books, talking about their family tree and trying to work out a 1920s puzzle. Some of the grandparents even attended class with their grandchild. Grandparents were also treated to afternoon tea as the school choir performed.

Meet Howick’s ‘Heartbreak’ Kid By Jon Rawlinson

“When I first saw them, I was shocked at how good looking they all were. I didn’t know we had people like that in New Zealand!” Along with his co-host, Matilda Rice, Mark has helped corral participants through challenges designed to test their compatibility, with lust, love, laughter, tears and betrayal par for the course. But who will win out in this passionate game of love? It seems Mr Dye will never say... well, not yet anyway: “I can’t tell you who is going to win... TVNZ would kill me!” ■■ From June 11, Heartbreak Island will run MondayWednesday nights from 7.30pm on TVNZ 2 with an uncut version from 9.30pm on Fridays (TVNZ 2 and DUKE).

T

he idea of sun, sand and sexy singles might seem quite remote as winter bites but that’s exactly what one former Howickian has been indulging in during filming of TVNZ’s new show, Heartbreak Island. While ‘what becomes of the broken hearted’ is yet to be ‘exposed’, the Times can reveal that at least the one of the show’s co-hosts, Mark Dye, has made it back from location in Fiji intact! “The show went incredibly well,” he says. “It really was the most fun job I have ever had. It has everything you want from a reality TV dating show: scandal, fun, revenge and of course, sex.” The 16 competitors may have eyes for one another but with

News bites Pyjamas round-up The Kidz First Jammies in June campaign has started off very strongly. The practice Creating Wellness is this year one of nine listed collection points for pyjamas. Already it has had a great response and it isn’t even June. “Between us and Pakuranga Chiropractic we have had about 40-50 new sets of pyjamas donated, and we expect much more,” says Dave Russell. The campaign asks the community to support Kidz First (Middlemore Hospital) by donating kids’ pyjamas and socks.

ew figures showing that first home buyers have taken out more housing mortgages with banks than any other buyer group in New Zealand over the past five years may mean that current housing policy is flawed says Property Institute of New Zealand chief executive Ashley Church. His comments are supported by the results of a joint report, released by the Property Institute and data company Valocity, which measures ‘mortgage registrations’ (the number of mortgages uplifted according to the different classifications that buyers identify with when they buy a property) which shows that first home buyers have dominated the number of new mortgages uplifted in each of the past 5 years in every part of the country except Auckland. “It’s fair to say that these results came as a shock. Every commentator in recent years has been concerned about the impact of house price inflation, on first home buyers – so the discovery that they’ve been the largest group of buyers in

From clutter to contemporary Lyn Wong’s kitchen is the heart of her home.

“We have a corner bi-fold pantry where the benchtop runs through the cabinet so she can have appliances plugged in and close the doors to hide any mess,” says Hannah.

But it was missing three key things – space, storage and practicality.

“I knew that there was a better way to use the available space and make the kitchen more functional.” Hannah Brown from Jag Kitchens had no trouble bringing Lyn and her husband Darrell’s vision to life.

everything has its own place.

It’s where she spends hours cooking and where she entertains family and friends.

“In its day the kitchen we had would have been amazing and really eye catching but there were a lot of things in the kitchen that were purely decorative and just not practical,” she says.

the market is something of a bombshell”. Mr Church notes that the figures don’t include properties which were bought without the need of a mortgage or properties which were purchased by foreign investors who sourced their mortgage funds offshore but he says that it’s unlikely that these numbers would change the overall picture significantly. “Unless you buy into the now thoroughly-discredited claim that foreign buyers made up over 30 per cent of the market – these additional purchases would be on the fringes and are likely to confirm the overall trend”. Mr Church says that this new information may lead to a review of current policies designed to support first home buyers. “Both National and Labour have been fixated on addressing the situation facing first home buyers in order to help more of them get into the market – but these figures suggest that this may not be the problem we all believed it to be,” Mr Church said. ➤➤Continued to Page 15

and light brown timber wall cabinets and bar back. The 30mm Angola Black granite bench top and sleek stainless steel appliances gave the kitchen it’s stylish and modern edge.

The new kitchen is simple, modern and well-designed.

“A lot of the furniture in our home is heavy looking and with my husband’s love of hunting a lot of our decor is quite rugged so we wanted to kitchen to compliment that,” Lyn says.

Blue and timber accents and dated cabinets were replaced with warm, earthy tones and textures.

Kitchen designer Hannah says the kitchen had stayed the same since the house was built in the 90’s.

A crisp white was chosen as the base colour, and was brought to life with a seamless combination of dark warm grey tall cabinets

“The original kitchen had every design feature possible thrown in together with open shelves, wine racks, exposed drawers and blue

wooden handles,” she says. The original kitchen footprint was used and the layout stayed relatively the same, says Hannah. “The main focus was that the cooktop was on the angle of the benchtop and we wanted to move this to a straight wall for ease of cooking and also to add a powerful rangehood which is very important with Chinese cooking,” Hannah says. The layout stayed relatively the same, but the fridge was moved

to the end of the kitchen so that people could access it without entering the entire kitchen.

Lyn says working with Hannah and the Jag kitchen team was effortless and the kitchen came together just as she had hoped.

The pantry was made bigger and a pull out pantry was also added to maximise space and make reaching for ingredients easy.

“They had lots of ideas and advice and made sure they took into account everything we wanted for our kitchen,” Lyn says.

The sleek new cabinetry goes up to the ceiling, maximising the storage space and giving the kitchen a seamless look.

“They were happy for us to use our own tradesmen as well, which was great at helping us keep the costs down.

The kitchen features lots of drawers with Blum Orgaline Utensil and Cutlery inserts so

“The new kitchen is everything I imagined and I definitely have a lot more storage,” she smiles.

➤➤From page 14 “If that’s the case, then maybe programmes like KiwiBuild need to be targeted more broadly and with a focus on making those homes available to those in the greatest need rather than only those who are buying their first home”. Mr Church says that the figures also provide a clear picture of the market, in general, over the past five years and demonstrate that the property market peaked in 2016. “Almost without exception – the number of mortgages uplifted by every buyer group peaked in 2016 and has dropped away since then. “That’s the clearest indication, yet, of when we reached the top of the market”. Mr Church says that, for those who follow New Zealand property cycles, this information allows them to predict where the market will go over the next 10 to 12 years with some degree of accuracy. “We know from experience that property values roughly double in Auckland every 10 to 12 years and, based on this rule of thumb, I’m of the view that the next cycle will start in 2021/2022 and that, by 2026 or 2027 the median house price, in Auckland, could be around twice what it is now”.

According to the Valocity data: The total number of mortgages uplifted in a 12 month period peaked at 164,000 in the year to March 2016 and had dropped to 121,000 in the year to March 2018. This means that the total number of new mortgages in the year to March 2018 has dropped by 26 per cent off the March 2016 peak. In the year to March 2016, first home buyers uplifted 40,000 mortgages, nationwide, making them the largest group of new mortgage customers representing 24 per cent of all mortgages. By the year to March 2018 that number had dropped to 32,000 mortgages nationwide – although their share of total new mortgage business actually increased to 27 per cent Auckland bucked the national trend – with 18,000 mortgages (or 29 per cent of the total) being for the purpose of refinancing in the year to March 2016. That figure had dropped to 12,000 mortgages by the year to March 2018 – but this lower number still represented 29 per cent of all mortgages. 33 per cent of properties, nationwide, are mortgage free – a figure which has remained largely unchanged over the past five years. Investors have never represented the largest group of new mortgage customers over the past five years. In the year to March 2016 they uplifted 29,000 new mortgages representing 18 per cent of all new mortgage business. By the year to March 2018 they had uplifted 19,000 new mortgages or just 16 per cent of all new mortgage business.

Short housing supply increases rents, creates working poor While the focus has been on house prices and first home buyers, little attention has been paid to the drastic need for extra rental accommodation according to NZ Property Investors’ Federation executive officer Andrew King. The last few years have seen record population growth which has caused a sudden need for extra housing , he said. This fact demonstrates that, while the Salvation Army has said that high rents are creating the working poor, the problem is also one of insufficient supply of rental housing.

A tenant told the media that “years ago it was easy to get a home, but now it is so hard”. Approximately 85 per cent of rental properties in New Zealand are provided privately. Most of these are supplied by ordinary Kiwi’s trying to provide for their retirement. Around 75 per cent of rental property owners have just one property. Rental property providers have been unfairly judged and criticised over recent years, with cost increases, regulatory changes and poor court decisions making it extremely hard to provide homes for people.

It currently costs around $6500 a year to buy and provide the average New Zealand property as a rental. This is on top of the purchase price for the rental and this will increase to more than $10,000 a year if ring fencing proposals are introduced. “We need to realise that rental property providers are an essential part of providing housing in New Zealand” said King. “The harder we make it to provide homes for the tenants, the harder and more expensive it will be for tenants to find homes.”

Visique Botany treats Dry Eye Syndrome

D

o you suffer from blurred vision? Do your eyes often burn? Do you have scratchy, itchy eyes? Do you sometimes have red eyes? Do you wake up with mucus around your eyelids? Do you suffer from arthritis, asthma, gout or diabetes? If you’ve experienced one or more of the above symptoms you should meet David Lee of Visique Botany Optometrist. He says that Dry Eye Syndrome affects more than 20 per cent of the adult population in Australasia and many people are unaware of this health condition. “It means that your eyes are not producing enough tears which results in dryness, irritation, redness, blurred vision and general discomfort in your eyes.” Our eyelids have special glands called Meibomian glands which produce an important oil layer to prevent the evaporation of tears. When there is a dysfunction in these glands, this can lead to Dry Eye Syndrome. This syndrome is also part of the natural aging process, as a side effect of many medications, or living in a dry or windy climate. People who have undergone cataract surgery, eye laser treatment or wear contact lenses may also be sufferers. Visique Optometrists have invested in an IPL equipment to treat the Dry Eye Syndrome. Through a series of safe, non-inva-

sive laser treatments, the Meibomian glands are stimulated to return to their normal function. Goggles are placed over the patient’s eyes and hydrogel is applied to the skin around the lower eyelid. The E-Eye IPL device is then used to apply a series of polychromatic pulsed light under the lower eyelid, a process that only takes a few minutes. This cutting edge French technology means results are visible within a couple of hours and for optimum results four treatments are required. Many customers have reported improved comfort and use less eye drops for dry eyes after the treatments. Visique Botany offer top quality and very friendly service. New spray treats cramps Three young woman reckon they’ve come up with a treatment for muscle cramps. Pranisha Prasad (finance director), Pranita Prasad (chief executive) and Claudia Nair (marketing director) formed Simplicity, a Young Enterprise team from Ormiston Senior College. The company is producing a muscle cramp spray. “Spray away is a unique product which allows you to continue playing and enjoying your sport, as it helps to subdue muscle cramps,” Claudia said. “The spray is a chemical free and drug-free product and environmentally friendly.

Historian Alan La Roche continues his series marking the 170th anniversary of Howick and warms us up for the big 175th celebrations that are planned.

“Being athletes ourselves, we face muscle pains and spasms. There are many people out there that encounter this common problem,” Claudia said. “So as a team, we wanted to create a product that would help with this recurring trouble”.

GMT posts strong result Goodman Property Trust (GMT), the NZX-listed industrial and office property owner, has recorded a statutory profit of $207.2 million before tax for the year ended March 31, compared to $220.5m previously. GMT, owner of Highbrook Business Park, said the successful execution of the trust’s asset sales programme and the re-allocation of capital into its growing development pipeline is focusing investment in the strongly-performing Auckland industrial market. This strategy is strengthening the balance sheet and contributing to GMT’s strong financial and operational results. Highlights for the period include: ■ A statutory profit of $207.2m before tax, compared to $220.5m previously. ■ Operating earnings of $119.1m before tax or 9.25 cents per unit,

compared to $121.7m achieved in the previous period. ■ Cash distributions of 6.65 cents per unit, representing around 95 per cent of GMT’s cash earnings of 6.99 cents per unit. ■ Contracted asset sales of $243.9m, with a further $323.9m conditionally sold post-balance date. ■ Commencement of seven new development projects with a total project cost of $164.8m. ■ Greater balance sheet capacity with a look through loan to value ratio of 25 per cent, expected to reduce to less than 20 per cent after settlement of all contracted sales. ■ Extension to the retail bond programme, with two $100m issues. ■ A 6.5 per cent increase in net tangible assets, from 130.4 cents per unit, to 138.9 cents per unit at March 31, 2018.

T

he selection of the site for the village of Howick in 1847 was strategically chosen to deter a possible attack on Auckland or Howick by unfriendly Maori from Thames and Waiheke. Thames Maori under Taraia Ngakuti Te Tumuhuia, often called Taraia, was a fierce old Maori cannibal. He was feared by pakeha settlers in Auckland. Since 63 per cent of the Fencibles in Howick were Irish, they were friendly with Maori as both Maori and Irish had been bullied by the English for years. Taraia resented the European take-over of Maori land. Taraia of Ngati Maru was remembered for his attack in the Hawkes Bay with his cannibal warriors who also travelled to Cook Strait joining with Te Rauparaha plundering and killing followed by attacking a Kati Kati pa in 1842. Taraia did not sign the Treaty of Waitangi and supported Maori in the Waikato by not sending his men into the Waikato War, New Zealand’s Civil War. Howick might have been an ideal “lookout” site to watch for

Taraia by Gottfried Lindauer. Image supplied

waka [canoes] from Thames and the Howick Fencibles might be first to engage with them. Howick village had no protection such as a blockhouse or a stockade until 1863. If unfriendly Maori had attacked Howick, these old army pensioners, their wives and children could have been under threat. In 1849 there were 774 residents in Howick, 262 in Onehunga, 334 in Panmure and 296 in Otahuhu. The Howick Fencibles were known for their grumbling and discontentment but being Irish they were seen by officials as being dispensable. They lived in the hollow, now known as Howick Valley, bordered by Cook Street, Union Road, Ridge Road and Picton

Streets, and could not see the sea. Possibly facing south some thought it might be warmer, as if they were still in England? Why were the majority of the Maori Armed Police Force, 10 in number, in Howick with a European sergeant and corporal? The Howick Fencibles saw the Maori police as being unnecessary and a waste of Government funds, in a military settlement! Possibly Howick needed extra protection? If there was a military crisis in Auckland, it would take a day for a messenger to run to Howick and another day to assemble, check muskets and march nearly 30km to Auckland including crossing the Tamaki River on the old punt. Fencibles were not given ammunition in case they misused it. Taraia and his Ngati Maru tribesmen were intercepted by the two resident missionaries, James Preece and the Rev Thomas Lanfear who stopped an attack on Auckland or Howick. Taraia was paid 50 pounds by the Government to keep out of the Waikato War. One Ngati Maru family joined in and, as a result, about 200,000 acres of the Hauraki rohe (iwi territory) were unjustly confiscated, hence a recent Treaty of Waitangi settlement. Agnew’s Angle a happy knack of finding his supports after making a sharp break. His tactical kicking game on a wet, chilly Christchurch night was far superior to that of Barrett’s. However none excite to the same extent as high risk dare-devil McKenzie who is being encouraged to temper his individual flair and work on improving his options. Certainly his kicking and passing game have improved and he is favoured to join the likes of PJ Perenara and Jordie Barrett on the bench as impact players. Meanwhile the highly regarded Hurricanes will be gutted they couldn’t beat a Crusaders team minus the suspended Joe Moody and Owen Franks and the injured Sam Whitelock, Tim Perry and Jordan Taufua. With Tim Bateman, Peter Samu and Braydon Ennor forced to leave the field injured, the Crusaders were left to scrape the scraps from the bottom of their barrel. Having achieved what predecessor Todd Blackadder couldn’t in claiming the Super Rugby crown in his first sea-

son as Crusaders coach last year, Scott ‘Razor’ Robertson’s team has the forward power and sharp attacking edge to defend their title. Should they do so, Robertson could become a strong candidate to join the All Blacks coaching staff if Steve Hansen retires after the 2019 Rugby World Cup. However with an 89 per cent winning record and a chance to improve on it, Hansen’s record as head All Blacks coach will take some beating. Meanwhile the Hurricanes will seek to return to their winning ways away to the Highlanders on Friday night. The Blues host the Rebels at Eden Park at 5.15pm on Saturday before the Chiefs will attempt to make full use of home advantage from 7.30pm against the table-topping Crusaders. With Damian McKenzie and Augustine Pulu each scoring two of the Chiefs six tries in a hard fought 39-27 win against the Waratahs, the Chiefs will relish the challenge, especially with giant lock Brodie Retallick in devastating form. There are several great match-ups to kindle the interest of the selectors, none more than that between Mo’unga and McKenzie. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer and author

The Pakuranga Rugby League Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary this weekend. When it first opened in 1968, the club had only one team and for a while they also had softball and netball teams. Now heading into its 50th year, the club now has 12 junior and three senior rugby league teams. In the lead up to the celebrations, the club held a special “oldies” luncheon. It was a time for past players, members and their families to share memories about when they used to play for the club; and those stories were recorded and will be shared during the jubilee celebrations. The 50th anniversary events will be held throughout Queens Birthday weekend from Friday June 1 until Monday June 4. The celebrations include a day of rugby

aving bested Beauden Barrett in the Crusaders 24-13 Super Rugby triumph over the Hurricanes on a miserable wet Christchurch night, Richie Mo’unga highlighted New Zealand’s fortune in being blessed with so many world class first-fives. Take your pick - Barrett, Mo’unga or Damian McKenzie - each is a class act more than capable of serving the All Blacks with distinction few other teams can match. However, having been named International Player of the Year over the past two years, Barrett had looked set to become a permanent fixture as the All Blacks’ No 10 for many more to come. That is why classy Chiefs pivot Aaron Cruden decided to chase the big bucks abroad and why Highlander Lima Sopoaga will follow in his wake when the current season ends. With his speed, accurate crosskicks and happy knack of scoring tries, Barrett remains favoured to be the All Blacks’ selectors first choice. But as former first-fives themselves, Grant Fox and Ian Foster will be delighted with the development of Mo’unga and the electrifying McKenzie. Mo’unga has the same composure and game smarts as Sopoaga and has

Academy win goes to rising star Howick race driver Jordan Baldwin has topped the points-table of the 2017 New Zealand Elite Motorsport Academy to win the Ian Snellgrove trophy. The prestigious trophy, awarded in memory of long-time MotorSport New Zealand general manager and Academy programme trustee Ian Snellgrove, was presented to Baldwin during the MotorSport NZ annual awards dinner in Wellington on 26 May. New Zealand’s Elite Motorsport Academy is administered by the MotorSport NZ Scholarship Trust and run by tutors from Academy of Sport South Island and the University of Otago’s School of Physical Education’s Human Performance Centre. Last year marked the 14th time the programme has run. Baldwin, who turned 20 in March, was one of eight young motorsport competitors selected for the year-long academy programme which started in July 2017 with an intensive week-long camp in Dunedin.
