Lucky escape for boy after manhole scare By KELLY TEED
Dylan McKenzie didn’t see the manhole was there and fell 4.4 metres.
Times photo Wayne Martin
An 11-year-old boy is lucky to be alive and relatively unscathed after falling down an uncovered manhole in Botany. Dylan McKenzie was playing with friends at Logan Carr Reserve on Kilkenny Drive with a group of friends when he saw a sheet of plywood on the ground. He picked it up with the aim of using it to make a hut with his friends; however he didn’t see the hole underneath. “I didn’t know the manhole was there... then I fell 4.4 metres but didn’t break anything except my phone and I sprained my wrist,” says Dylan. He recounts the events bravely now, but Dylan’s mother Paula McKenzie says the experience was traumatising for her son. “He was actually really scared. He was having a sleepover at a friend’s house...when they got back to the house they rung me and said ‘can you come and pick me up’? “He was scared of going to sleep the next couple of nights because of the dark...you can imagine how dark it would have been down there with a tiny bit of light just up ➤ Turn to Page 3 the top.”
East gets a taste from $28b transport plans By THERESE HENKIN
A
$28 billion transport investment to fix Auckland’s transport network has been unveiled and east Auckland has not been forgotten. The AMETI Eastern Busway and a transport corridor connecting the airport with Botany are among
those projects mentioned in the Auckland Transport Alignment Project (ATAP) package, which aims to transform our city. However little is mentioned about the plans for the East West Link and only one stage of the Mill Road transport corridor has been confirmed. Transport Minister Phil Twyford says the $28b plan will “help ease the awful
congestion that has been caused by a decade of under-investment”. Botany MP and National transport spokesperson Jami-Lee Ross says the ATAP announcement contains “very little that is new” and, in effect, is a re-announcement of most of what the former National Government was doing. “The key differences are that

Stockade Hill - the final hearing T
he final battle for Stockade Hill and our precious views took place on Friday April 27 in the Fencible Lounge of the Howick Library building. This is the fourth year of Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association’s battle for Stockade Hill, and the second day of the hearings on Council’s Plan Change 3. Many people believe that the issue of Stockade Hill views were sorted out some time ago. Alas, that is not the case. Last year the council agreed to make
changes to protect the views but this required two changes to the Unitary Plan’s Mixed Housing Urban area and two further hearings. This opened up the an opportunity for those those both agreeing with and those disagreeing with the council’s decision to be heard equally On Friday the Fencible Lounge was packed to capacity with supporters wanting our iconic views retained. evidence to present to the commissioners pointing out the importance of retaining the 360 degree views for all the thousands of people who signed our petition and rejecting the limited viewshaft now proposed by council in their latest Plan Change. This change created a new limited viewshaft giving limited protection to the views from the Rotary toposcope only between Flat Island and Rangitoto, and removed protection for views from Ridge Road as you enter Howick. The local people told Auckland Council very clearly that maintenance of the Stockade Hill amenity along with its wide sea views, the views entering the village from Ridge Road and the views over the surrounding countryside with its heritage associations, and the views of our volcanic cones are important for their social, economic and cultural wellbeing as prescribed by the Resource Management Act. Then, as a masterstroke, a scale model of Stockade Hill was unveiled showing the barricade effect of proposed higher density buildings on the views from the lower parts of Stockade Hill. This told the tale as nothing else could. It was crystal clear that implementing council’s intensification plans will ruin Stockade Hill views in perpetuity. A standing ovation followed! We now await the commissioner’s final decisions in June, after they have heard the council’s final evidence, and the reply from Housing Corporation who are arguing against any extension of view protection and demanding the retention of intensification capacity. GMT kicks off new projects G
oodman Property Trust (GMT), the stock exchangelisted company which owns Highbrook Business Park, has commenced two new industrial projects totalling $54.1 million. Utilising almost four hectares of development land, the preleased facilities will add 19,467sq m of rentable area to the portfolio and generate over $3.3 million of annual income
once completed. The new commitments add to the large volume of work currently underway with the total value of these projects now $233m. Goodman (NZ) Limited’s chief executive officer John Dakin said it continues the strong momentum of the last 18-24 months and further progresses the rapid build-out of our strategic land holdings.”
The projects include: ■■ A design-built warehouse facility of 14,050sq m for Australasian packaging specialist NCI at Savill Link in Otahuhu ■■ A 5417sq m warehouse expansion for national carrier and existing customer, Move Logistics at Highbrook Business Park. Excluding land allocations, the two projects require additional investment of $39.5 million.
“Regional growth and the impact of online retailing is driving demand for well-located industrial and business space facilities across Auckland,” Dakin said. “With portfolio occupancy of 99% we are effectively at capacity. To alleviate the supply shortfall we are intensifying our development programme with a combination of build-to-lease and design-built facilities.”
High School Musical comes to Pakuranga A hot favourite with thousands of tweens all over the world, the upbeat and Disney High School Musical comes to Pakuranga College On May 9-12, Pakuranga College will host four shows of this year’s production of the Disney Channels hit movie, High School Musical On Stage. High School Musical centres on the main characters Troy, the star athlete at a smalltown high school, who falls for academic beauty Gabriella at a holiday karaoke party. When they return to campus, Troy and Gabriella audition for the upcoming school musical. Meanwhile, the jealous Sharpay conspires to squelch their chances. The contemporary musical is full of catchy, entertaining songs plus lots of colour, song, dance and laughs. Year 13 student Jehann Daruwalla who plays Troy, the lead in the musical says that he has grown up watching the movie. “When I heard that our school production this year was going to be HSM, I thought I would have a go and audition. “The challenge of accepting the lead role in this production is exciting as I identify with the character Troy Bolton. He is an athlete whose main focus is on sports but he also wants to try out something different and he auditions for his school play.” There was a great turn out for auditions and the main cast members braved the cold after the recent stormy weather for their very first photo shoot. Sharpay says: “The audience can expect a show and a half, full of surprises, laughs and giggles, moments where you cringe and feel bad for the characters. I love my character, because she’s the mean girl. I’d only ever played quirky or nice characters, so it’s definitely hard to play the opposite. “It is easy for me to play a character that fakes confidence because she is secretly insecure —-and that’s just a normal high school student.” Shows will be held on Wednesday May 9, 7pm, Thursday May 10, 7pm, Friday May 11, 7pm and Saturday May 12 at 7pm as the Pakuranga College Hall. Boy escapes manhole ➤➤From page 1 The Somerville Intermediate student said there was yellow warning tape around a nearby tree but he didn’t see it as he approached the plywood from the back of the tree. Ms McKenzie says Auckland Council was “fantastic” upon learning of the incident, but told her they had no job references logged with the site and were not responsible for the temporary fix of plywood and warning tape – which begs the question, who was? “Why didn’t they call the council and report it? Plywood is obviously not a solution.” She says when Dylan initially told her about the fall, she took it with a grain of salt. “I thought surely it can’t have been that deep but he took us to the park the next day and showed us and I just wanted to cry thinking ‘oh my god, you fell down that?!’” Auckland Council has since retro-fitted the manhole Dylan fell down with a safety grille and replaced the cast iron lid on top. In an email to Ms McKenzie, the council reassured her precautions had been put in place to prevent future incidents. “The particular manhole in Logan Carr Reserve, Howick is in a secluded area under a large tree on the edge of the bush-clad gully that flows through the reserve. The manhole is approximately 4.4m deep. A pipe 875mm diameter passes through the manhole and its outlet to the watercourse is 13m away in the bush. “We do not know how the lid was removed, however our contractor discovered plywood over the opening and caution tape around the tree. The cast iron lid has been re-installed and a safety grille fitted beneath the lid. Two more manholes on the large diameter pipes in the reserve will also be retrofitted with safety grilles. “In 2013 and 2014 the council assessed its manhole assets through a specially developed risk profiling system which identified approximately 600 manholes for inspection. These were inspected, and many were found already to have been made safer by having more secure lids or safety grilles fitted, and 421 more across Auckland were fitted with these same safety treatments,” the email said. Both Dylan and Mum are aware it could have been so much worse. In October 2009, two-year-old Aisling Symes was found dead after falling down a stormwater drain in west Auckland a week after she was reported missing from her home. While it’s a tough loss for Dylan losing his phone which he saved up his paper run money to buy his own cell phone, they’re in no doubt that he’s had a very lucky escape. ■■ Auckland Council has a 24/7 call centre where missing or displaced manholes should be reported immediately. Poverty isn’t always easy to see in New Zealand, but it’s all around us—in our communities and our neighbourhoods, behind the doors of family homes, down alleyways at night, and even in the workplace.
But it’s everywhere, in every city and every town. And these people need your help— not only to survive, but to lift themselves out of poverty forever and live independent, happy lives.
Sometimes it’s hidden because the thousands of people living in poverty don’t want you to see it, for fear of being judged or ostracised. Other times it’s because people choose not to see it—after all, how could a country as beautiful and prosperous as New Zealand have so many people living day-to-day in poverty, often not knowing where their next meal is coming from?
The Salvation Army helps over 120,000 Kiwis each year, working to lift them out of poverty by providing a range of short and long-term support and guidance to those in crisis. We’re committed to ending poverty in New Zealand, but we can’t do it alone. You can make a difference to those in need, because seeing poverty is not enough—we must act now.

Transport budget reaches east ➤➤From page 1 He says the new link between the airport and Botany has always been a long term project. “When the Manukau City Council built Te Irirangi Drive it was made deliberately wide to accommodation a busway in the future.” Auckland Transport’s chief infrastructure officer Greg Edmonds says the release of ATAP brings more clarity for the public about how AMETI Eastern Busway sits within the strategic network and future plans for connecting Botany with Puhinui. AMETI Eastern Busway was identified as a long planned critical project that expands Auckland’s rapid transit network from Panmure to Botany. Some $1.2 billion has been allocated to the project which will start with construction of the Panmure to Pakuranga stage in late 2018. AMETI Eastern Busway will introduce 7km of dedicated, congestion-free busway between Botany and Panmure. This will mean less than 40 minutes by bus and train between Botany and Britomart in peak hour when the busway is operational in 2026. The project will also include a Reeve’s Road
Flyover, 7km of cycling lanes and walkways, two new bridges across the Tamaki River and Pakuranga Creek and three new stations and interchanges. The report also indicates future plans to continue rapid transport from Botany to the Airport While the highest priority section of this corridor is between the airport and a major new interchange at Puhinui train station, connecting this corridor with Botany Town Centre is a key future priority, the report states. “This signifies further progress towards bringing transformational transport infrastructure, better travel choice and improved services for the people of South East Auckland,” Edmonds says. Little is said about the East West Link, only that the investment for this has been reduced by about $950 million from the National government’s original plans. The Mill Road corridor has been split into two phases, with only one stage considered an immediate priority leaving the corridor largely incomplete. The proposed Mill Road corridor was to provide an additional strategic northsouth corridor for south
Auckland, connecting Manukau and Drury to the east of the Southern Motorway. However Hunua MP Andrew Bayly says only completing the first phase of the project means the people of Pukekohe, Waiuku, Karaka, and Drury will face continued delays and congestion. “Today the Government has scrapped most of that project by only promising to follow through on the first stage of the northern section – from Manukau to Alfriston School. This drop off point is a road to nowhere,” says Bayly. “There will now be a yawning transport gap between Papakura and the Stevenson’s Development at Drury. By disbanding the proposal to create an alternative four-lane expressway, it means that the announcement will have no real effect on reducing traffic congestion.” The ATAP package allocates more money than the $26.9 billion the previous National Government planned to spend, but Twyford says the council’s planned regional fuel tax will make up the shortfall. ■■ To view the full report go to https://www.transport. govt.nz/land/auckland/atap/.

y heart is exploding and I am so nervous, says Kat Yearbury as she gets ready to board a flight on Thursday evening to St Louis, Missouri for a medical procedure that will change her daughter Ella’s life forever. Apart from feeling breathless there are so many emotions going through her mind as she talks to the Times hours before she flies to the US. She is overwhelmed. It’s been a year of rigorous fundraising with practically one or two events a month to raise $150,000 required for the selective surgery and other costs involved. Born premature at 25 weeks, Ella was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus and epilepsy. Doctors said that she would never walk or talk. But Ella beat the odds, despite undergoing 13 surgeries and a grim prognosis. Last year it was a meeting with an American paediatric neurosurgeon Dr TS Parks who visited Auckland that changed things for Ella’s family. Dr Parks has done several spinal cord surgeries enabling kids with cerebral palsy to walk independently for the first time in their lives. Relieved that her daughter has been accepted for the dorsal rhizotomy procedure at St Louis, Kay set her heart on raising funds for the surgery that comes at a cost. While the entire community along with good-hearted Samaritans in New Zealand whole-heartedly supported her, she soon found that she couldn’t
They managed to smash the record by having 928 fairies at the Fairy steps 4 Ella, #IBelieveInFairies event— 57 more than the current record held by St Giles Hospice in England which was 871 fairies. “I was so touched when some of the kids even emptied their piggy banks and one of them did a stand-up show at 50 cents a ticket to raise money for Ella,” she says. While Kat was thrilled to reach the set target of $150,000, unfortunately the airline sponsorship fell through. Bryre Eason, an education support worker in east Auckland who is very close to the family, says that the family now needs money to get home after the surgery and for months of physiotherapy. Lest we forget
AN INVITATION TO LEADERS OF LOCAL HOWICK COMMUNITY GROUPS If you’re leading a local Howick community group that involves or has an interest in older people, please join us on Friday 11 May at 10:30am to learn more about the Village without Walls @ Howick.
Last week, New Zealanders around the country gathered to remember those who sacrificed their lives in its defence. We had two moving services in Howick on Stockade Hill, and I was privileged to lay a wreath in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Every nation has its opportunities to come together and consider its founding principles, its vision for the future, and the values that guide it. For New Zealanders, Anzac Day is such a time. The World Wars changed the world at a cultural and societal level. It is hard to talk about high ideals when we consider the dead, wounded, and broken men who returned from war, and the families and communities ravaged by grief left to pick up the pieces. But the Anzacs did not die or suffer in vain. They fought perhaps at the most basic level, for their families and loved ones. They fought for justice and truth. They fought against the tyranny of those who wished to dictate the lives and freedoms of men and women around the world. By giving their lives in service, the Anzacs upheld democracy and human dignity. The freedoms and duties of our society are thus a heavy
Over the last few months, East Health Trust and HBH Senior Living have been exploring the concept of a ‘Village without Walls’ in Howick, based on successful virtual villages overseas. Designed to support older people to age well and overcome loneliness and social isolation, the Village without Walls concept is a community-led initiative that aims to work with other established community groups. We hope you or another member of your organisation can join us on Friday 11th May for an update on the results from our recent survey, to hear from a member of the Sydney virtual village at Waverton, and discuss the Howick initiative in more detail. When: Friday 11th May, 10:30am Where: Fencible Lounge, Howick Library, 25 Uxbridge Road, Howick, Auckland RSVP: by Tuesday 8th May to 09 538 0827 or email Lee.Warmington@hbh.org.nz
Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga mantle weaved by the deeds and heroism of the Anzacs. Anzac Day is more than just recording the actions of soldiers 100 years ago. It is about asking ourselves: given this inheritance, what do we have to do? In peace, we risk taking freedom for granted and so risk its abuse. Today, we must continue to fight for the democratic principles upon which our nation was founded: the preservation of the right to speak and think according to our conscience, and the protection of the vulnerable and disenfranchised in public debate. We must use our freedoms to serve the common good for all in our society. Anzac Day is a tradition of freedom informed by truth and what is just; the willingness to do the right thing no matter the cost irrespective of fashion or contemporary whim. This is the firm foundation of our national identity, and this is the reason why we keep coming back, every year, to remember the Anzacs. Anzac Day is a challenge: to live our lives with duty, courage, and selflessness, so that by the grace of God 100 years from now, our grandchildren and greatgrandchildren will look back on our time and see us as men and women worthy to be called children of the Anzacs.

Getting ethics into business By Farida Master
C
KC13369-V2
onscious consumers are the biggest growing consumer group in the world and a lot of businesses want a piece of the pie, said Jemma Whiten, director of Marketing and Digital Ecostore as she addressed students of Saint Kentigern College on Thursday. Businesses are realising that having ethical practises is a good pay off. Surveys say more than 70 per cent of people are happy to pay more for products or services provided by companies with a proven commitment to positive environmental impact. Talking to business students studying Ecostore as a case study for their International Baccalaureate (IB) exams, Ms Whiten gave an overview of complexities involved in working with overseas markets like China and the US. “The fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) market is a very complex business and success is about getting so many things right. It’s about building a brand with purpose and meaning, a brand that consumers love,” she said to NCEA Level 1 Business students. “To get consumers to love a brand, you have to connect with consumers and understand how everyone ticks. You have to create trust and credibility, which is not easy. Ms Whiten gave students an insight into the research and development, manufacturing process,

supply chain, brand strategy and business management aspects of Ecostore. Head of commerce at Saint Kents Vaishally Patel said students have been studying the inspirational story of Ecoman entrepreneur and activist Malcolm Rands as part of the curriculum. The story of the organic gardener and hippy from Northland who built the pioneering global brand is a textbook example of humble beginnings. “This was a good opportunity to be hands-on and get a deep insight of the intricacies of the marketing and operations of a sustainable product,” said Ms Patel.

Welcome to the Ormiston Weight Loss Service. Our service is intended to offer our community a surgical choice and clinical support, to assist in taking ownership of your health and moving forward to a greater place of wellness. Bariatric Surgery assists in weight loss and may be recommended as a last resort when diet, exercise and medication have not been successful and if obesity related conditions such as heart disease, asthma, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea and type II diabetes
have worsened, among other problems. The aim of the surgery is to reduce the food-holding capacity of the stomach so the patient has a feeling of fullness after eating very little. Without hunger pangs, the person tends to lose interest in overeating and is more likely to stick to a low-kilojoule diet. When you choose Ormiston Hospital Weight Loss Service for your surgery, you choose the most experienced surgeons, treating you in the well-established Ormiston Hospital. We are dedicated to offering you a complete and comprehensive service with a fixed fee that will provide you with the best level of care through your journey to improved health.

Stanley Loo BHB, MBCHB, FRACS (Plas) Plastic Reconstructive & Cosmetic Surgeon
How do you find a good Plastic Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgeon you can trust? Often, the proof is in the work they do and the success rates of surgeries. There’s nothing like a happy patient who gives a glowing testimonial. In Dr Stanley Loo’s case there are several sincere testimonials on the website that express deep gratitude.
Mr Stanley Loo consults at East Care Specialist Centre, Ormiston Specialist Centre and operates at Ormiston Hospital. Here are some testimonials from happy clients:
‘Dear Mr Stanley Loo – Thank you so much for the care to the “Highest standard” when you operated on myself recently for the bilateral breast reduction. Please continue to be like this as an example to others also, although sometimes hard I’m sure. I am very happen to inform you ALL is mending beautifully and I am leading a full, active, physically comfortable life. Wishing you all the best for your future.’ — EB ‘Dear Stanley – I have been so happy with my results after your surgery, the only thing I regret is not doing it sooner. Thank you for your care and patience with me through this process.’ — AS It is easy to see that Stanley Loo, a fully trained and qualified Plastic Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgeon who has extensive experience in a wide variety in plastic surgical procedures – including Asian cosmetic surgery, eyelid surgery, otoplasty, abdominoplasty, liposuction, breast augmentation, skin cancer treatment, scar revision, carpal tunnel release, ganglion removal and dupytrens excision—-has changed people’s lives forever. New Zealand trained with extensive overseas fellowship experience in Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea, Stanley is committed to the highest standard of care and professionalism.
He is also a consultant surgeon at Middlemore Hospital where he specialises in cleft lip and palate surgery, microvascular surgery, head and neck surgery, hand surgery, melanoma and skin cancer treatment. Stanley runs New Zealand’s only microvascular course at Middlemore Hospital teaching microvascular skills to all surgical trainees and specialists who require these skills. One of the cases that Stanley worked on made newspaper headlines when Mr Mulholland of Helensville chopped off his index finger and the thumb of his left hand in a wood splitting machine. He and his neighbour were splitting firewood when the hydraulic machine severed his thumb and index finger. The postie who happened to be there, called emergency services and the neighbour picked up the severed thumb and finger and put them in a wet cloth inside a plastic bag, placing it on ice in a chillybin. uyers could save more than $1 million by choosing an apartment as their entry point into top Auckland suburbs says the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand. For buyers looking to gain an entry point into some of Auckland’s top suburbs such as Parnell, Epsom and Takapuna they could save more than $1 million dollars by choosing to purchase an apartment rather than a residential property according to research from the REINZ. The median price for apartments in Parnell was $772,500 compared to a residential median price of $2,067,500 – a difference of $1,295,000. For Epsom the apartment median price was $865,000 compared to a residential median price of $2,100,000 – a difference of $1,235,000 and for Takapuna the median price of an apartment is $817,500 compared to a residential median price of $1,870,000 – a difference of $1,052,500. Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “For those wanting to gain an entry point into some of Auckland’s top suburbs, considering an apartment rather than a residential property is a much more affordable way of getting into some of these areas. Apartments have come a long way in the last 20 years to having top-end fixtures and fittings, eco-friendly/energy saving features and extensive com-

What about the rest of the country or is this just an Auckland ‘thing’?
munal areas. “A saving of more than $1 million to live in a fantastic location or a good school zone is not something to be ignored,” continues Norwell. Other top Auckland suburbs included: ■■ Mount Eden – a saving of $970,500 ■■ Grey Lynn – a saving of $867,000 ■■ Freemans Bay – a saving of $750,000 ■■ Remuera – a saving of $656,400. Significant savings for first time buyers can also be found in some of Auckland’s entrylevel suburbs such as: ■■ East Tamaki – a saving of $527,000 ■■ Mt Wellington – a saving of $442,500 ■■ New Lynn – a saving of $280,000 ■■ Manukau – a saving of
$142,500. “For first time buyers apartments are an excellent way to get a foot on the already expensive Auckland property market. Apartments are usually close to public transport and other amenities such as cafes or restaurants, gyms and other retail outlets. But most importantly, they’re in a price bracket that people can more realistically actually afford. “An apartment may not be the property that a young couple end up living in their whole life, but it allows them the chance to build up equity in their apartment and then further down the track if they plan a family it means that they can then look to make the next step to a larger home with more room,” says Norwell. The one anomaly that REINZ’s research uncovered in the Auckland market was
While the majority of apartment sales are in the Auckland market there were also significant savings that could be made in other areas across the country including: ■■ Wellington’s Mount Victoria and Thorndon with savings of $719,750 and $467,328 respectively ■■ Papamoa Beach and Mt Maunganui with savings of $258,000 and $157,000 respectively ■■ Whitianga apartments represented a saving of $152,500 when compared to a residential property, and ■■ Queenstown apartments represented a saving of $894,000 when compared to a residential property – the greatest saving outside of the Auckland region. “A look at the regions also presented two further anomalies where it’s cheaper to buy a residential property rather than an apartment – in Tauranga where it actually costs $216,250 more to buy an apartment and in Christchurch Central we’ve seen the same thing, where it’s $35,000 cheaper to buy a residential property than it is to buy an apartment,” says Norwell.

Warning of ‘disastrous impact’ of tax changes
Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, May 3, 2018 — 15
FOR SALE CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION
P
roperty Institute of New Zealand chief executive Ashley Church is warning of ‘an exodus’ of landlords from the property market in the wake of Government proposals to change the tax treatment of property investment and says that plans to ‘ring fence’ property tax losses will have a disastrous impact on the market and will significantly worsen the shortage of rental accommodation in our largest cities. Mr Church’s comments follow the release of an issues paper outlining a proposal to change the rules around the tax deductibility of losses associated with the ownership of rental properties. The effect of the changes would be that the costs associated with owning a rental property (interest, rates, insurance, maintenance, etc) could no longer be offset against other income as has been the case for many decades. Instead, these losses would be ‘ring fenced’ and could only be applied to profits made on the property against which the costs were incurred. The Government is claiming that the moves are “an effort to level the playing field between speculators, investors and home buyers but Mr Church says this is nonsense and shows a continuing misunderstanding of the difference between ‘speculation’ and ‘property investment’.
D
L SO Private landlords provide the lion’s share of rental accommodation in New Zealand – and in doing so they have saved the State billions over the past few decades. Photo CMG Toronto
“This Government continues to have a blind spot when defining these terms. ‘Speculators’ are people who are in and out of the market very quickly – sometimes within just a few weeks or months – and who seek to make money through renovations or quick capital gain. ‘Investors’ are Landlords – people who are often in the market for decades – and who perform an important social service by providing accommodation over long periods of time. Mr Church says that treating the two in the same way demonstrates an unacceptable ignorance of how the property market works and says that ringfencing tax losses will be the ‘final straw’ for many investors and will largely have the effect of pushing them out of the market – further compounding an already serious rental crisis. In encouraging feedback on the proposed changes Revenue
Minister Stuart Nash has said that the “persistent tax losses that many property investors declare on their investments indicate that they rely on capital gains to make a profit. However, Mr Church says this is simply another example of ‘woolly thinking’ and a lack of experience by the new Government. “Yes, most investors make a loss on the day-to-day operation of their property in the early years – but properties do eventually become profitable at which time tax is paid on that profit just like any other business activity. “Private landlords provide the lion’s share of rental accommodation in New Zealand – and in doing so they have saved the State billions over the past few decades. Scaring them out of the market is foolhardy, bloody minded, and will constitute a massive ‘own-goal’ for the Government.

Unseen, Unknown: Unveiled
Unseen, Unknown: Unveiled is currently on display at Malcolm Smith Gallery and features works by six artists, all considering how we perceive artworks and the ways in which meaning can reveal itself slowly. The exhibition considers the invisible history an object, subject matter or material has and how the artist’s intentions can influence our understanding, adding to our subjective experiences. Ben Abdale-Weir contributed one of two texts exploring the exhibition and explains “the metaphor of the veil, or more precisely unveiling, used here describes a transition in perception; transition from seeing something purely as it appears, to having a greater understanding of what it is… simply seeing something certainly is not to know it.” Former Howick resident, Pamela Wolfe is one of the artists featured. Her painting, Large Roses in Glass Vase (2016), is a seemingly traditional still life, however Wolfe says plants are a metaphor for the fragility of our own lives and includes flowers often in her works as their preservation is crucial to our survival. As part of the exhibition, we are hosting two public programmes coinciding with the Arts Out East Festival. The first is Bright Ideas, a free morning talk series and on Wednesday 9 May at 10am Wanda Gillespie will be discussing her works that feature in Unseen. On Thursday 17 May join us for a tour and in-depth discussion on all

Youngsters attend national swim camp A
group of budding young Kiwi swim stars came together over the weekend for a three day camp. The coveted Jetstar Super Swim Squad brought together 36 youngsters from around New Zealand for the annual camp. The swimmers qualified for a place in the squad by winning their age group in the 200m OceanKids event at one of six qualifying events in the Banana Boat New Zealand Ocean Swim Series. The youngsters were mentored by a stellar coaching line up headlined by three-time Olympian Dean Kent. Dean will be supported by Olympic swimmer/canoeist Steven Ferguson, Commonwealth Games swimmers Laura Quilter and Ellen Quirke, and respected surf lifesaving swim coach Jack Gavin. Robin Crowe, father of squad members Ella and Grace Crowe, says; “The Jetstar Super Swim Squad is a fantastic opportunity for children to be trained by top New Zealand swimmers and to develop long-lasting friendships with other children that they will swim with for years to come. All the kids have loved it, they have the biggest smiles on their faces and the coaches this year have been fantastic.” The aim of the camp is to back New Zealand’s future swim stars by offering expert tuition to develop their technical skills and help them to build confidence by providing an opportunity to meet and talk with a range of high-performance athletes.

Heavy rain didn’t take the shine of the Pakuranga United Rugby Club (PURC) Premiers’ performance against Waitakere City on Saturday. Pakuranga won 57-0. While the drenched pitch levelled the game out for the first 15-20 minutes, with good ball skills and patience Pakuranga started to gain control, said premiers coach Chad Hopa. Comfortably up 31-0, changes were made with all players receiving good
minutes. “With 14 players unavailable for the game due to injuries, it was good to see no further players in the casualty ward and a few players looking to return to action when we face Marist at home this coming weekend,” Hopa said. Hawkins to pay $13m for defects Psychological drama at HLT By Nick Krause A construction company has been ordered to pay up more than $13 million to remedy massive and widespread leaky building defects at Botany Downs Secondary School. The order was made in a High Court judgment against H Construction North Island Ltd – formerly Hawkins Construction North Island Ltd – by Justice Downs. The judgment notes the school opened in 2004 and has 1906 students and 118 teachers. Hawkins built the school’s buildings between
2003 and 2009. The plaintiffs – the Minister of Education, the Secretary for Education and the school’s Board of Trustees – contend nine buildings leak because of a host of construction defects – and will cost more than $17m to repair. They argued Hawkins was liable in negligence to meet this cost. “Hawkins accepts the buildings suffer what it refers to as ‘issues’ and related poor workmanship,” the judgment says. “But it submits they comply with the Building Code. Hawkins contends its contractual relationship with the plaintiffs precludes
liability in negligence in any event.” Justice Downs said in his summary that Hawkins is liable to pay the cost of remedying defects (specified in the 88 page judgment). Hawkins must pay the plaintiffs $13,424,967.40 and GST. “The sum is not small but Hawkins was paid approximately $28m to build the school,” Justice Downs says. “Pupils and teachers have not had the benefit of healthy code-compliant buildings for eight years and the award reflects the amount necessary to repair the school.”
By Kelly Teed Audiences of Howick Little Theatre’s latest production can expect to be glued to their seats in the latest psychological thriller. Written by Hugh Mills in 1956, The House By The Lake follows Maurice and his sister, Stella, who make plans to murder their stepbrother due to his interfering in their finances and how he’s made his brother lose his job.
As they go about executing their plan, Maurice’s wife Janet stumbles across some conclusive evidence of their plan and Maurice decides she must be done away with, too. But not all is as it seems – director Andrew Gordon says the heroes and villains of the story are very convoluted which leads to a “fantastic, gripping story on stage.” Gordon, whose theatre background stems from acting, speaks
highly of both the cast and crew of the production. “It’s fantastic acting, the set is amazing – we have a fantastic designer and it’s a wonderful job with the lights, it feels as if you’re right there in the mood with the actors. “It’s very much on the edge-of-your-seat stuff.” ■■ House By The Lake is on at HLT on May 5 to 26, 8pm. Matinees May 6, 13, 2pm. Tickets available from iticket.co.nz.
Honouring the Fallen Many shops, schools and outlets paid tribute in some way to our fallen soldiers prior to Anzac Day. Among them was Howick Library and the new bookstore in Howick Village, Poppies. The small shell in the Poppies window was loaned by Mary Lenton (pictured) and stands beside a huge bronze shell case from Howick Antiques. Meanwhile Times’ Janine Hickmore came across this nice display at Howick Library.

Welcome back to our Kiwi Ko A
t last, a Lydia Ko triumph to give heart to a country which has quickly grown to love its South Korean-born golfing sweetheart. That she should achieve it a few days after her 21st birthday in the Mediheal Championship on the same tricky San Francisco course she had won two Swinging Skirts tournaments made it more special. Especially so when coming almost two years since enjoying her last victory when she was world No 1. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since, along with coaches and caddies and a different set of clubs as she sought perfection in a sport that is notorious for it treacherous twists. Many experts with far greater expertise than me have offered reasons why Ko’s game dismantled to such an extent she dropped in the rankings to No 18. Certainly many of us have wondered, beyond understanding her need to improve the length of her drive, why she wanted to change a wheel that had won her professional tournaments since she was 14. Some, like highly-rated American coach David Leadbetter, claimed it was parental control that took her away from him when she enjoyed so much success. While the length of her drive did
Agnew’s Angle increase, it remained far short of the biggest hitters on the LPGA circuit. And her putting stroke didn’t appear as fluent as it had been. Which could have had a lot to do with decreasing confidence. Many years ago I read an article relating to a group of highlyrespected psychologists who came to the conclusion that perfectionists were under-achievers. Having achieved so much at such a tender age, only a fool would claim lovely Lydia is an under-achiever. However the theory could partially explain her losing her magic touch over the past few years. That she should regain her Midas touch in such spectacular fashion on the playoff 18th hole with an eagle against Aussie Minjee Lee’s birdie was a magnificent achievement worthy of such a special sportswoman. Hopefully this signals a bright new era in a women’s game that has grown immensely thanks to the injection of so many incredibly gifted young players who have been encouraged by Lydia’s preco-

cious success. Whereas she was one of a kind, now she is one of a half-dozen. Hopefully this long-awaited latest victory will give her the confidence to regain Queen Bee status ahead of so many, mainly Asian, princesses. Splat! That’s the egg on my face for singing the praises of the Warriors for their thrilling NRL win against the Dragons before the mighty Melbourne Storm thrashed them 50-20
after a short turnaround. Full credit to the victors and champion coach Greg Bellamy for their near-perfect execution and making me eat humble pie. But I’m sticking to my belief the Warriors will bounce back and make the top eight playoffs. Meanwhile with the exception of the hapless Blues, NZ Super Rugby teams know how to snatch hardfought wins with flattering scorelines.

She is maintaining Merit for her topic tests and internals so far this year, she feels it is because you gave her a solid foundation last year which has taken her well into this year” “We believe, your tips and guidance enabled him to do well” “Thank you very much for everything you did for him” “I’m sure that your maths lessons really helped” For a complete list, go to www.brainstormtuition.com
Exams are only 5 months away! ENROL NOW Enrol now and take advantage of discount rates for paying a term in advance (see next column). Parents should note that NCEA students are doing ongoing internal assessments during the term which count for credits in exactly the same way as do end of year exams so these should be taken very seriously, especially by those students seeking merits and excellences. Enrol now to do practice tests and to find out what the examiners are looking for when you write your answers.

Last round Hurricanes magic overcame the tenacious Sunwolves 43-15, Manasa Mataele’s brilliance spearheaded the Crusaders’ 21-8 win against the Brumbies and Lima Sopoaga’s penalty at the death killed the John Mitchell-coached Bulls 29-28. Four wins to keep all four in the top six but all four will concede they were far from perfect. ■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author
TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”
