Our day to remember them T
housands gathered throughout the district to remember and pay tribute to our soldiers who served their country in WWI and in other campaigns. The Howick Dawn Service shortly after 6am and the Howick Civic Service at 11am on Stockade Hill on Anzac Day yesterday drew large numbers. Howick Local Board chairman David Collings delivered a speech while Pastor Phil Sproul made a scrip-
ture reading and prayer. Howick Brass were to the forefront once again and were drowned out briefly during the touching flypast. Howick College student Ethan McCormick drew much applause for his winning essay - the third time he’s won the right to speak at the service. The laying of wreaths was followed by the traditional march of RSA members and veterans to the RSA clubrooms for refreshments.

Tree removal begins at house damaged in storm By Nick Krause
T
A massive crane was required to remove part of the fallen tree which Photo Karen Cory Toussaint partially crushed a house in last week’s terrible storm.
“The house is uninhabitable,” Lorna told the Times. “There were three huge chunks of tree (in the house)...the house is virtually buried.” The tree (Times, April 12) came close to claiming Lorna’s life. She spent a night in Middlemore Hos-
pital after suffering bruising and lacerations. She was in the living room when the tree smashed into the house. She described the moment the tree came down. “When the tree hit the house I was hit by something. I fell into a

he Shelly Park family whose house was partially crushed by a massive tree in last Tuesday’s storm are looking for a temporary home. It could take around six months to have the house repaired assuming all works well with their insurance company. In the meantime Lorna and Rob and daughter Bronwyn (20) (the Times has agreed not to publish their surname) are looking for a rental in Howick after spending time with friends in Remuera. Meanwhile the 30-35 metre tree which demolished their living room and a good chunk of the rear deck and side of the house was partially removed by an enormous crane at the weekend. Due to the steep incline of the long and relatively narrow drive, the crane took up a position on their street, Aries Place.
crouch position. When the debris began to fall, it fell around me like an igloo,” she said. “Once the debris had stopped falling I pushed a hole through the igloo. When I stood up the tree was about two or three feet (60-90cm) from me. “I was in a pile of rubble. The tree had stopped. If the tree had continued I don’t think I’d be talking to you.” Meanwhile she is grateful for not just the lucky escape but the help of family, friends and neighbours. “I’m still recovering from my injuries,” she said. “We’ve got amazing friends who have come to help our daughter get out small precious things, art work, books and small pieces,” Lorna said. “Everything in the house is very wet. “We would like to just thank our neighbours...the neighbourhood is very warm and friendly.”

Trust comes to the aid of Historical Village A
grant from the Stevenson Village Trust has helped the Howick Historical Village out of a potentially stressful financial situation with a blow out on one of its major conservation projects. Late in 2016 the board of the Howick & Districts Historical Society decided to proceed with the conservation of the exterior of Sergeant Ford’s Fencible cottage in the village. The cottage was originally built in Panmure in 1848 and is a wonderful example of a Fencible Sergeant’s Cottage and is of considerable cultural heritage significance. It was relocated to the village in 1994 with original restoration work being carried out in 1996. In order to fund the project, an application was made to the Lotteries Commission and the Society used its own financial resources for the one third “partnership “funding that Lotteries require applicants to have before considering an application. The original cost of the project was $54,000 a substantial sum for a not-for profit-museum like the village to find. The application was made in February and a favourable decision was received in May. Work had commenced in April using the society’s “partnership” funding. As the work commenced

through the coming months and the structure and foundations of the building became more visible it was clear that the amount of conservation and replacement of rotten framing and foundations was far greater than original envisaged. The estimated total cost of the project was now $84,000. Having started, the society then made the difficult financial decision to carry on. As Howick & Districts Historical Society president Rob Mouncey said: “Once we start a project like this, it is very diffi-
cult to stop as to close the building up without remedial work being completed is an absolute waste of money.” The decision to proceed put the financial reserves of the society under considerable stress. Around this time, it became known that the Stevenson Village Trust was requesting applications from local community groups to support worthwhile local projects. “We made an application to the trust for assistance on the Sergeant Ford’s project and also to overcome Foundation
North declining the normal annual operating grant application we had made in May,” Mr Mouncey said. The Foundation North decision was “bitter sweet” as they had declined a $40,000 application for operational costs but had approved $150,000 for another major conservation project, the Maher Gallagher Cottage”. “We were delighted to be informed in November that the Stevenson Village Trust had approved our application and had generously topped it up as well,” Mr Mouncey said. “It was a huge relief to gain the funds we were awarded as it overcame two major hurdles, financing the conservation project and allowing us to continue to pay for our day-to-day operational costs. “We cannot thank the Stevenson Village Trust enough. The grant was not only a life raft, it has helped set us up to do some of the other work a museum like the village should be doing on collections management and audience development. John Russell, chairman of the Stevenson Village Trust, said: “The trustees were delighted to support the Howick Historical Village as it is community-based museum that has grown into a destination of regional significance.”

Dining with Obama By Farida Master
Ranjna Patel
Pakuranga local Ranjna Patel ONZM was really excited when she received an invite to the most sought after dinner hosted for former US President Barack Obama at the Viaduct Events Centre on his recent visit to New Barack Obama Zealand. How did I get here, was the first thought that crossed her mind when she was informed that she would be seated at the top level at the event centre along with a select 100 invitees. The rest of the 900 special guests were seated at another level at the invitation-only extravaganza. “I had to leave my husband and son who accompanied me since we were all invited separately. I was seated with (mental health advocate and former All Black) Sir John Kirwan and it was a huge privilege. We were all asked how we would like to be addressed. “There was so much security and we were told that we could take a picture with Mr Obama and have a minute or two each with him but we were all so tongue-tied,” she laughs. “Obama is just the way you see him on television, very real. “He started his speech saying that he was on a scouting mission for Michelle and his daughters Malia and Sasha to come out to New Zealand. I really do hope that Michelle Obama makes a trip here next year. I have already spoken to one of the women’s organisations to invite her here. Obama is all for women’s empowerment. He said that if there were only women leaders of countries around the world for two years, we’d see a lot less conflict and more children out of poverty, and the world would be in a better place.” Topping the talk was a fusion dinner prepared by the internationally renowned Kiwi chef Peter Gordon.
AN INVITATION TO LEADERS OF LOCAL HOWICK COMMUNITY GROUPS OPEN NOW AT BOTANY DOWNS
If you’re leading a local Howick community group that involves or has an interest in older people, please join us on Friday 11 May at 10:30am to learn more about the Village without Walls @ Howick.
Over the last few months, East Health Trust and HBH Senior Living have been exploring the concept of a ‘Village without Walls’ in Howick, based on successful virtual villages overseas. Designed to support older people to age well and overcome loneliness and social isolation, the Village without Walls concept is a community-led initiative that aims to work with other established community groups. We hope you or another member of your organisation can join us on Friday 11th May for an update on the results from our recent survey, to hear from a member of the Sydney virtual village at Waverton, and discuss the Howick initiative in more detail.

CycleXpress wheels into Howick CycleXpress is on the move. After 15 years in Panmure, Bruno Pfister is moving the business closer to home. The decision to move, Bruno says, was not only to be closer to home, but after multiple break-ins, the alternative was shutting up shop for good. With a motto of ‘repair not replace’, the company prides itself on its workshop which boasts a HAAS CNC machine, a lathe and a manual milling machine. They make their own bike parts too – they have a small online store and most of that product is made on site.

The Howick Business Association is happy to announce that the search for a new Town Centre manager has ended with the hiring of Howick local Jane Newbury. Jane needs no introduction to Howick since she and her husband Philip and their four children have been residents of Howick and Shelly Park for more than 30 years. A familiar face in the area, she is more than delighted to have a five minute drive to work. As the administration manager at the Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust for the past 11 years, Jane has lobbied for beautification projects and murals in the Howick area. She was also involved in the myriad of events hosted by the Trust, including the Annual Eye on Nature event at the Auckland Botanic Gardens that involved hundreds of school
children and their families. Jane’s work at the Beautification Trust saw her managing the removal and prevention of tagging and graffiti under the Auckland Council contract for the entire Auckland Southern region. Currently, Jane is fast settling into her new role as she meets up with different business and looks forward to bringing her vast experience in collaborating with different partners including the Howick Historical Village and Uxbridge. With former town centre managers like the dynamic Jenny Foster and Wendy Dunn, Jane has big shoes to fill but is already walking the talk as an event champion and promoter of businesses in Howick. She looks forward to reviving the Howick Business Association Awards apart from the other regular calendar of events hosted by the Howick Business Association.

ong-time Beachlands resident, Dennis Fillet, has joined the team at SO Renovate to help the 10-year old home renovation and building company expand into the East and South-East of Auckland – suburbs he knows and loves well. Dennis brings with him a wealth of experience, having managed his own building business and worked with other top home construction companies. Having worked within the industry for so many years, he understands well the challenges, issues and opportunities, especially when it comes to renovating older homes. He also brings an exceptional eye for detail with his history in cabinet making and the precision work required for super yacht joinery. These experiences now allow him to unlock the potential in homes across the east through SO Renovate – a leader in the field of home renovation, recladding and extensions, as well as new build house construction. Over the last 10 years SO Renovate has helped over 600 Auckland families realise their dream home ideas, and in doing so, built a strong reputation for high quality work work which is what drew Dennis to the business. SO’s unique end-to-end project delivery process was also a selling factor for Dennis. Their aim, along with SO Renovate’s team of over 50 professionals, is to ensure every project is delivered on time and on budget without the stress major projects can often bring. “There’s also great excitement when we get a new project underway. “Our clients are looking forward to realising a dream they may have had for a long time and they’re investing in their home. “It’s really important that the end
result lives up to those expectations and the process to get there is enjoyable for everyone,” says Dennis. SO has also been active in helping homeowners drive value from their sections. Property prices have flattened a little in recent months, by Dennis knows the demand is there and building rapidly. “We are around 9,000 homes short in the Auckland region to meet growing population demand. To recover from this, around 69 development proposals per month
need to be delivered to council. We’re a long way short of that, so demand will only continue to rise.” With this in mind, considering opportunities to add a rentable minor dwelling have becomes a popular option for many with larger sections. More bins needed at Lloyd Elsmore By Therese Henkin
T
wo youngsters are on a mission to make Lloyd Elsmore park litter-free. At a recent local board meeting the Farm Cove Intermediate School students appealed to the board to increase the number of rubbish bins in the park. “We are both frequent users of the park and we noticed the amount of trash in the part was increasing and getting annoying,” says 13-year-old Thomas Woodroofe. “The few bins that they do have in the park are always full and not emptied nearly enough,” Shi Ming Li adds. “And not where you needed them like round the skate park,”

says Thomas. The boys said they also frequently saw park goers littering because the nearest bin was too far away and people didn’t want to walk around with rubbish in their pockets. The boys reached out to their local MP Simeon Brown when

they didn’t receive a response back from the Auckland Council. It was Brown who suggested the boys present their idea to the Howick Local Board and ask them to prioritise increasing the number of bins at Lloyd Elsmore. The pair said their presentation at Monday’s Howick Local Board meeting was a success and they received positive feedback from the local board members. “They took it well, maybe aided by the fact that we were children,” Thomas laughs. The idea was sparked from a school project where the boys were tasked with “fixing a world problem”. Shi Ming says the key now is to keep an eye on whether action is actually taken.

Developer tests cloud estate storage After four years of development work, Howickian Andrew Holding and his colleagues are almost ready to go live with cloud-based software that promises to keep estate details safe and sound. At the May SeniorNet meeting, the concept of moving your estate information from the shoebox under the bed to the cloud will be discussed and Holding hopes to find volunteers to test the system.
“The concept of the shoebox in the cloud for estate management is a necessary progression for the modern globalised family,” says Holding. Feedback and volunteers to trial the software will be welcomed. Holding has worked in IT for more than 25 years and this concept was inspired when he and colleagues had difficulties tidying up family member’s estates, during a time that was already tough.

Folau and ‘that’ message
On Tuesday, April 17, TVNZ reported Israel Folau, internationally famous league player, as saying that all homosexuals would go to hell. How did his comment come about? I wondered how such a comment came to the hearing of the media and why it should be thought worthy of reporting. I have no doubt the situation was orchestrated, however, given the aggressive approach of the LGBT lobby. I am sure that league fans would not have been interested in eliciting his opinion on this. He is famous for football, not as a teacher of religion. Anyone should be able to express a personal opinion, however, especially if asked to, without this kind of response. The obvious intent in this case was to make ‘capital’ of it. What is the issue here? Freedom of speech or expres-

sion of personal belief? The Bible has been around, in its entirety, for 2000 years. All Christians accept it as their authoritative standard of all things pertaining to life and Godliness. It proclaims the message that all are sinners and must be saved from our sins. It tells us, among other things, that practicing homosexuality is sin. Folau is being faithful to his beliefs, as can be expected. Why the sudden ‘shock, horror’ reaction? It is not a new message. What lies behind the media reaction?

In the last few days apart from the Commonwealth Games, the NZ Herald news was taken up with ‘modern slavery’ or human trafficking in the form of prostitution and exploitation. All thanks to Helen Clark and the then Labour government that legalised prostitution, New Zealand is now a haven for pimps and sex workers. Your reports stated that sex workers enter NZ under all sorts of reasons but the underlying purpose was to use their bodies to make money. While there are those that are being trafficked, there are also those freelance sex workers who come to NZ because
prostitution is legal in NZ. With a weekly tax-free income of $1000-$2000, it’s no wonder that sex workers from other parts of the world are beating a hasty track to NZ. And there is no slur on them from their country folks while they are making the ‘big money’ here. The tax-free status is great for these sex workers, but when they are afflicted with diseases, who pays the bill? Worse to come is, what happens when they pass those diseases onto their unsuspecting clients? Should they get pregnant and want an abortion, again, who pays for the services? The latest news about a mother, Kasmeer Lata (and her partner Avneensh Sehgal) pimping her under-aged daughter is really disgusting. Since prostitution is legal in NZ, even as an illegal immigrant, she should have prostituted herself rather than wreck her daughter’s life! What after her imprisonment – will she be sent back to Fiji and her partner to India? Meanwhile, what happens to the children? Is it also time for this Labour government to undo the horrors that their government created?

More targeted rates?
I read with dismay the article written a few weeks ago regarding the proposed $67 targeted food waste bin rate. I am strongly opposed to yet another targeted rate being implemented by our council. Council needs to address the following questions before they just go ahead and load the ratepayers with further rates. Don’t forget they are wanting to introduce a targeted rate for Kauri trees, water rate for cleaning up our streams and rivers, and the transport rate which remains in place albeit for only three years.
Poverty isn’t always easy to see
Of course the petrol tax is also about to hit our pockets. How much more can we be expected to pay out considering our already elevated rates? Regarding these food waste bins: 1) will everyone in Auckland be charged this rate or does it go according to which area you reside in? 2) What about all those who currently compost at home? We attended the council-run composting course years ago where we were encouraged to start composting. We PAID for our Bokashi bins and began breaking down our food waste which has been highly successful and has cut back the amount of rubbish we throw out in our normal bin. Surely we should not have to now pay for something we will not use? 3) How will tenants pay for this? Landlords cannot be expected to foot the bill user pay system perhaps? Council seems to be doing another about-turn on how they will fund this venture. On their site from an article written in May 2017, they proposed charging for the normal bins as a pay-as-you-throw system and offering the food waste bins for free. Why the sudden change to charging for the food waste bins? Surely we should all be encouraged to recycle and compost. Charging people to do this is not an incentive. If they want to charge us then go ahead and do so on the normal bins which we have some control over. Of course this in itself will create other problems of illegal dumping etc but that is another issue. Some clarity and honesty from the council would be appreciated before they just go ahead and make decisions with little public consultation and loading the ratepayer yet again. This should be part of our current rates.
Lyn Roberts, Howick

You can help end poverty.
You can help end poverty. Poverty isn’t always easy to see in New Zealand, but it’s all around us—in our communities and our neighbourhoods, behind the doors of family homes, down alleyways at night, and even in the workplace.
But it’s everywhere, in every city and every town. And these people need your help— not only to survive, but to lift themselves out of poverty forever and live independent, happy lives.
Sometimes it’s hidden because the thousands of people living in poverty don’t want you to see it, for fear of being judged or ostracised. Other times it’s because people choose not to see it—after all, how could a country as beautiful and prosperous as New Zealand have so many people living day-to-day in poverty, often not knowing where their next meal is coming from?
The Salvation Army helps over 120,000 Kiwis each year, working to lift them out of poverty by providing a range of short and long-term support and guidance to those in crisis. We’re committed to ending poverty in New Zealand, but we can’t do it alone. You can make a difference to those in need, because seeing poverty is not enough—we must act now.

Community debate at its best F
ew issues are as controversial as a conscience vote in Parliament involving life and death. A vote which will be difficult for many of the 120 MPs that have to vote on the End of Life Choice Bill again before the end of this year. Earlier this week I hosted a public meeting and debate on this Bill. It’s a proposal that would effectively legalise voluntary euthanasia, or assisted dying. The End of Life Choice Bill has evoked strong opinions in both opposition and support of the ideas it confronts. The Bill, in the name of ACT’s
David Seymour, is what we call a conscience issue for Parliament. This means that your local representatives are not bound to vote down political party lines. Instead, it is our job to listen and attempt to reflect the values and positions we believe exist within our communities. Parliament is often said to be at its best when MPs have a free vote. We see well-researched and argued points, delivered with passion and meaning. The shackles of the party whips are dropped, and the normally forgone conclusion of votes disappears.
colleague for Helensville, Chris Penk, argued in opposition. In favour of the Bill, it was argued that the current law is unjust and forces people into harmful circumstances that undermine their dignity at the end of their life. Moreover, there were amble safeguards in place in the Bill to ensure that the decision and circumstances where such choices were made were true reflections of the individual making them. In opposition, it was argued that the nature of the choice being made was open to undue influence and coercion. Essentially, that

it was very hard to tell whether a good decision was being made and the consequence was irreversible and, in that context, the decision could never have enough safeguards. What will Census stats reveal? T Photo supplied
JH10924
If businesses keep doing the same – they will get less in the current market.
he 2018 census has just been completed and it will be interesting to see how the numbers have changed and speculate the impact for business growth in the Howick Local Board region. The numbers from 2013 showed the region has more residents who have higher incomes than other parts of New Zealand. Five years ago, residents had more cars per household, they were more highly educated, and they were more likely to work in professional, management, admin and sales roles. Business buddy CEO, Kirsten Hawke says continued growth and development in the Howick ward presents business owners with opportunities as well as challenges. “Finding the right staff, coping with new competition and even inefficiencies caused by traffic woes, all impact on local businesses,” says Hawke.
“We’ve all heard about working on your business rather than in it, but the reality is many business owners struggle to find the time.” At 4.6 per cent, unemployment is at its lowest level in many years and 2018 looks promising for the New Zealand economy, but it can also be challenging for growing businesses. “With increasing competition and population growth – if they keep doing the same as they have always done – they can expect less from their business.” “The most successful businesses constantly review performance and plan future direction, considering the changing business environment.” To support, inspire and challenge local businesses the East Tamaki company is hosting 7 ways to grow your business at their HQ on Wednesday May 9. “We will cover the seven key areas in your business that you
can influence and the strategies you can adopt to achieve growth,” says Hawke. “Entrepreneurs will look at their business like they never have before, and they will will be challenged to adapt. “The 90-minute event will help you understand the mindset change required to succeed in a changing business landscape,” says Hawke. 7 ways to grow your business is at 35 Allens Road, East Tamaki from 4.10pm -5.40pm on Wednesday May 9, 2018. Refreshments will be available, and every guest goes in the draw to win a door prize. More information go to events at www.businessbuddy.co.nz. ■■ We have a double pass worth $100 to give away to readers. For a chance to win, enter at www. times.co.nz in the competition section. Entries close midday May 7 and winners will be notified by email.
Twyford misleads on rail again Transport Minister Phil Twyford has once again misled New Zealand over his plans to fund transport projects, National Party Transport Spokesperson, Jami-Lee-Ross says. “On the AM Show this morning Mr Twyford was asked directly if he was taking money out of State Highways like Warkworth to
Whangarei to pay for public transport in Auckland, and he said he wasn’t. But his own figures show that over the first three years of this Ardern-Peters Government, he plans to pour $2 billion into mass transit projects like a tram down Dominion Road. “It’s misleading for him to say that he’s not taking money from roading and
putting it into trams when the Government’s own policy statement shows that he is indeed putting it into trams. “Does he think he can just pull this money out thin air? “The reality is that Phil Twyford is going to fund a tram project by cutting $5 billion from State Highway projects and by increasing fuel taxes for motorists.”

ANNIVERSARY
Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, April 26, 2018 — 15
Paparoa, Owairoa or Howick name?
Howick historian Alan La Roche continues his fortnightly column which provides some very insightful glimpses into Howick’s past in this, its 170th year. The area is preparing for big celebrations on the 175th anniversary
T
here was controversy in 1847 when Governor Grey replaced the centuriesold Maori name of Paparoa or Owairoa for the English name of Howick. The newspapers thought the euphonious names of Owairoa and Paparoa good names. Earl Grey, Lord Howick was responsible for sending the Fencible pensioners and their families to Howick, New Zealand. It was not until 1923 that the Howick Town Board officially adopted the name “Howick” as some people continued to use the names of Paparoa and Owairoa. The first Fencible-settlers and their families settled into a new life in Howick. They became good friends of local Maori who had been building their cottages and selling food around the village. Some of the Fencibles struggled with the long Maori names which they quickly accepted. Some of these are listed. Ngai Tai are the descendants of Maui-tikitiki-a-Taranga who fished up the North Island of New Zealand and are the tangata-whenua of Howick and
Pigeon Mountain.
Pakuranga. Waipaparoa-Howick Beach means “water of the flat rocks”. This name was used by early settlers and has been reinstated after the recent Ngai Tai Treaty of Waitangi settlement. Paparoa was a Maori name for Howick district and was later used for the flat lands of the Meadowlands Valley. Aotearoa means “land of the Long White Cloud” named by Kupe’s wife who in about 950 AD first saw and discovered New Zealand. Owairoa means “the place of the long river”. The view from Stockade Hill towards Waiheke looks “like a river”. Te Komiti is a name for Bucklands Beach. Pakuranga is a shortened version of Pakurangarahihi, “the day the earth caught fire”
Times photo Wayne Martin
and the story about Auckland’s volcanoes erupted. Mangemangeroa means the “long valley of the mangemange vine”. The vine was used for rope for fishing nets and for house building. Manukau means only birds, when the Tainui waka entered the Manukau Harbour they saw no people “only birds”. Some early settlers spelt it “Manu-cow”! Motukaraka [Flat Island] means Clarke’s Island [Maori for Karaka]. It also is called Motu Ika, Fish Island. Motukorea [Brown’s Island] means island of the oyster catcher birds. Some were trained to alert the pa of visitors approaching in pre-European times. Ohuiarangi - Pigeon Mt. named after a Ngai Tai ances-
tor who lived here. Early settlers saw many kereru, native pigeons feeding on the Pigeon Wood trees here. Okokino, for Mellons Bay means a bad wind or gusts that were a hazard for canoes or sailing vessels. Te Naupata Point is named after Coprosma repens-the shiny leafed coprosma, near Musick Memorial Radio Station. Turanga (the old name for Whitford) means “standing up” as you could stand up in your waka in the calm shallow water. When the Fencibles arrived most Maori in Howick had attended Fairburn’s Maraetai Beach mission school and could read and write the English language. There was a fashion amongst some of the Fencible grandchildren of using Maori names or using them as nicknames such as Tui, Rata, Ngaire, Ana [for Anne], Mere [for Mary] or Anaru [for Andrew], Hone [for John], Hori [for George] or Henare [for Henry]. These names are less common today. Alan La Roche, Howick Historian

Is this the solution to KiwiBuild? T
he capacity to build more quality homes is already within New Zealand, instead of overseas, new research from PrefabNZ shows. Instead of shipping in from abroad, the PrefabNZ ‘Capacity & Capability’ report demonstrates that Kiwi-based housing manufacturing firms and construction companies can deliver for KiwiBuild using offsite methods. Through using innovative building methods, PrefabNZ Members say they could deliver around 7,000 more homes each year from 2020. This would deliver 70 per cent of KiwiBuild’s target of 10,000 homes per year over ten years. In fact, manufacturers and builders surveyed by PrefabNZ say they are ready to reinvest around 8 per cent of revenue, and up to 20 per cent in some cases, to deliver KiwiBuild.  “This is astonishing news, said PrefabNZ chief executive Pamela Bell. “New Zealand housing manufacturers and builders are telling us that they are willing to forego some profit in the short term to deliver KiwiBuild. This research is economic proof that our innovative construction industry does not need a big multi-national outsider in order to deliver on the KiwiBuild promise.
“We can have several New Zealand businesses using innovative building methods working together, using home-grown materials and sharing specialist expertise. For example, different companies might make wall panels, or roof pieces or bathroom pods, or any of the elements that go into a building. PrefabNZ board chair Lauren Christie added: “This Capacity & Capability report is well timed to demonstrate the latent capacity and commitment of the innovative construction sector to deliver better homes for Kiwis under the KiwiBuild banner. Mark Farmer, author of the gamechanging United Kingdom report ‘Modernise or Die’ agrees that offsite is an important part of the KiwiBuild solution. His experience in the UK shows how government officials have taken on board the advice he provided in his 2016 report where he showed how 25 per cent of the British construction industry would be gone in the next 10 years as workers retired. A year after the Farmer Review, the British Government committed to prioritising offsite building methods for several Departments, including transport, health, education, justice and defence.

Cleaning the filters on your heat pump or dehumidifier will help achieve a cosier home.
Photo supplied
Beat the cold snap Winter is coming with the first cold snap hitting the country but you can make your home cosier with some simple, quick DIY. EECA Energywise advises prioritising cleaning the filters on your heat pump or dehumidifier so it runs properly. Technical expert Christian Hoerning says heat pump filters should ideally be cleaned every few weeks during winter because they can get clogged. If you own a dehumidifier, run it while you are heating the room. “Dehumidifiers work best
in warm rooms and all the electricity they use gets released as heat - so your heater needs to do less work. If the cold draughts are whistling through your home, Mr Hoerning suggests putting low-cost draught stopping tape around windows or doors and tightening up the hinges on doors and windows. He says it’s important to avoid lots of moisture in the home over winter because it increases the risk of mould. Air your home by opening windows and doors a few times a day, even in winter, he says.
Other top tips: ■■Dry clothes outside or in a clothes dryer that is vented to the outside – avoid indoor airing racks or clothes dryers that vent into your house. The moisture in the clothes will end up in your home, making it damp. ■■Avoid unflued gas heaters which release toxic fumes and make your house damp. Cheap portable electric heaters are safer and cost less to run. ■■Check your insulation to make sure it is up to scratch and hasn’t been moved over the summer.

Volumes down year-on-year says real estate institute
T
he median house price for New Zealand rose 1.8 per cent in March 2018 to reach a new record high of $560,000 up from $550,000 in March 2017 according to the latest data from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ), source of the most complete and accurate real estate data in New Zealand. Median prices for New Zealand excluding Auckland increased by 6.2 per cent year-on-year to a record high of $460,000. Additionally, three regions achieved record prices: ■■ Gisborne - up 17.9 per cent to $330,000 (up from $280,000) ■■ Hawke’s Bay – up 11.7 per cent to $445,000 (up from $398,500) ■■ Wellington - up 10 per cent to $583,000 (up from $530,000). Other regions that saw strong increases in price during March were Manawatu/Wanganui (up 12.3 per cent to $292,000) and Otago (up 11.1 per cent to $405,500). Prices in Auckland fell 2.2 per cent year-on-year to $880,000 but this was compared to March 2017 which saw the region experience the record price of $900,000. It’s also due to the mix of properties sold - the under $750,000 price band had 4 per cent more sales this March and the $750,000-$2 million price band had 5 per cent fewer sales. On a month-on-month basis, prices in Auckland increased 2.9 per

across the region which is driving prices up particularly in the Nelson Park Ward in Napier (+27.7 per cent), Ruataniwha Ward in Central Hawke’s Bay (+25.8 per cent) and Heretaunga Ward in Hastings (+24.7 per cent),” she continues. “As New Zealand’s second largest city, Wellington continues to shine as an attractive place to live with much of the growth being driven by areas outside Wellington’s CBD including South Wairarapa’s Martinborough Ward (+57.4 per cent), Porirua’s Eastern Ward (+48.0 per cent), Carterton District Ward (+27.3 per cent) and Upper Hutt City Ward (+25.6 per cent),” continues Norwell.

cent. The REINZ HPI demonstrated a 1.0 per cent increase indicating a more stable market. Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “March was a very strong month from a price perspective with record prices achieved for New Zealand, New Zealand excluding Auckland, Gisborne, the Hawke’s Bay and Wellington. Look-
ing at the whole country, median house prices increased in 13 out of 16 regions – the only regions not to experience an increase were Northland, Auckland and Taranaki. “This is the third month in a row now that the Hawke’s Bay has seen a record median price for the region. This increase has been driven by a high level of demand
The number of properties sold in March across New Zealand fell by 9.9 per cent when compared to the same time last year with 7768 properties sold in comparison to 8622 in March 2017 which saw the highest month for sales volume in 2017. The number of properties sold in Auckland during March decreased by 12 per cent year-on-year with 2386 sold in comparison to 2712 in March 2017 – again off the back of a high comparative figure. However, there were some strong regional increases in the number of properties sold year-on-year including: ■■ West Coast – up 18.9 per cent
from 37 sales to 44 – the highest number of sales for the month of March in 6 years ■■ Gisborne – up 8.7 per cent from 69 sales to 75 - the highest sales count since May 2016 ■■ Nelson – up 7.1 per cent from 99 to 106 ■■ Taranaki – up 3.1 per cent from 196 sales to 202 ■■ Marlborough – up 2.7 per cent from 113 sales to 116 – the highest sales count since May 2016. Regions with the largest year-onyear decline were Otago (-19.1 per cent), Wellington (-17.7 per cent) and Manawatu/Wanganui (-14.7 per cent). “Volumes were down across the country 9.9 per cent year-on-year and while at face value this looks like a low number, however, March 2017 was an extremely strong month in terms of the number of properties sold. March 2017 saw the highest number of properties sold of any month in 2017. Whilst the seasonally adjusted figure was also down by 7.8 per cent year-on-year, this is just one month’s worth of data following two solid months of sales, so we’re not overly concerned about this month’s volume,” says Norwell. “Again, we’ve seen a number of the regions post stronger results than some of the major centres, highlighting the buoyant economies in these areas,” she concludes.

Warriors slay Dragons I
doff my hat to a rejuvenated Warriors NRL team that is rewarding loyal fans after too many years of abject misery watching them disintegrate. Saturday night’s 20-12 top of the table clash victory against previously unbeaten St George Illawarra was as good a Warriors performance as I can recall since making their 1995 NRL debut. There has been a lot of trumpet-blowing since and deservedly when they made two finals. But The Last Post would have been a more appropriate rendition in recent years, especially last when they wound off losing eight on the trot. The transformation with just one loss to the Brisbane Broncos this year has been amazing, highlighted by their slaying of a Dragons side that has the best attacking record of the season to date. Yet smart as the Dragons are with clever attacking moves that include snappy
passing and sharp running, the Warriors’ courageous defence stopped them in their tracks, sometimes within a few metres of the try line, time and time again. Energised by fitness and strength coach Alex Corvo, they are playing with heart and conviction. They also have depth after making some smart buys to inject brains and a better balance to their attack. Interestingly, two of the better wins against the Sydney Roosters and Dragons came when star halfback Shaun Johnson couldn’t play because of injury and Mason Lino stepped into the breach. While Johnson is renowned for his pace, sidestep and swerve, Lino is no slug either and he and clever standoff half Blake Green have long, snappy passes that give the outside backs and classy skipper Roger Tuivasa-Sheck more time and space in which to attack. Another to shine with a strong game was newcomer Anthony Gelling, who had
Agnew’s Angle his first start filling in for injured strongman Solomone Kata and can expect a lot more game time. A big rangy bloke, Gelling also doesn’t lack strength and his offloads suggests big, powerful wings David Fusitu’a and Ken Maumalo can expect more try-scoring opportunities. No one in the game leaps higher to defuse bombs than the fearless Fusitu’a and the strong running Maumalo is running with far more conviction now. With fellow centre Pita Hiku adding sting to the attack and muscle to the defence, supporters can dare hope this year’s results are no flash in the pan. As the newcomers become familiar with the environment, cohesion should grow. So should confidence in the knowledge they beat the Dragons without not only

Johnson and Kata, but also champion second rower Tohu Harris who was concussed early. Tough Adam Blair and the talented Harris have joined sparky Isaac Luke and Simon Mannering as leaders of a pack that now has genuine depth. While pleased with the latest win, head coach Stephen Kearney is not making wild predictions. Wisely so when one considers there are some tough clashes to come. However this year all opponents will learn the Warriors are no longer the easy beats they were but are, in fact, the real McCoy. Meanwhile having observed that miracle from afar, poor Blues coach Tana Umaga will be praying the rugby union gods smile more kindly on his lost flock before some fans leave the Garden of Eden for Mount Smart. ■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

Ponies claim late win With the biggest crowd seen at Pakuranga United Rugby Club for many years, the Premier team started strongly and held a 22-6 lead at half-time. With the wind picking up in the second half and pressure mounting, Pakuranga were unable to hold on with Ponsonby
scoring in the 80th minute to win 25-22. Premier coach Chad Hopa said: ‘It was heart breaking to say the least as it also coincided being a club day as well. Lessons learnt and hopefully they will be put into place this week as Pakuranga travel west to take on Waitakere City.”

Nathan represented the Maori All Blacks in 1959, 1960, 1961, 1965, 1966 and was awarded the Tom French Memorial Maori Rugby player of the year in 1962 and 1966. After hanging up his boots, he became a Maori All Blacks selector (1971-1977), was the team’s manager on its tour to Wales in 1982 and served as
a New Zealand Rugby (NZR) councillor (1980-82). Nathan also appeared 37 times for the All Blacks including an unbeaten run of 14 tests between 1962 and 1967. The NZMRB has also reelected independent Board member Merewaakana Kingi for a further three years, and reappointed regional board
representatives Howard Peeti (Te Waipounamu), Arapeta Gibson (Te Tini A Maui) and Bernard Te Paa (Te Hiku O Te Ika). Rick Steedman (Te Hiku O Te Ika) replaces outgoing board member Jim Wetere who has stepped down as chair of Te Hiku O Te Ika after many years of valued service. Palmer said 2017 had been a busy and successful year for Maori rugby. “It was fantastic to see the Maori All Blacks involved in the DHL New Zealand Lions Series playing a key role in proudly showcasing Maori culture and Maori rugby to the world, despite not getting the result they were after. “From the spectacular powhiri performed to the British and Irish Lions team at Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where a world record 7800 people took part in a haka, to the carving of seven taiaha as trophies, and the manaakitanga extended to the Lions supporters across New Zealand, we celebrated our fantastic culture with our visitors.”

aori All Blacks legend Waka Nathan (Ngapuhi, Te Roroa, Tainui) has been made a life member of the New Zealand Maori Rugby Board (NZMRB). Nathan, who lives in Howick, received the honour - in recognition of the exceptional services he has rendered to Maori rugby - at the board’s annual general meeting in Wellington on April 18. The 77-year-old’s contribution to Maori rugby has been constant since he made his debut for Auckland before his 19th birthday in 1959 and toured the Pacific with the New Zealand Maori team later that year. “Waka’s record speaks for itself and he holds a special place in Maori rugby folklore for both his deeds on the field and his personality and contribution off it,” NZMRB chair Dr Farah Palmer said. Nathan was not able to attend the meeting to receive his life membership, which was accepted on his behalf by board member Bernard Te Paa.
