MP: Nasty, vicious attacks on Local Board By KELLY TEED
M Kang cleared of bribery P4

P for Botany Jami-Lee Ross has spoken out in defence of his involvement in the 2016 local government elections, saying he would “absolutely” do it again. A $100,000 Botany by-election was forced when former Howick Local Board member Lucy Schwaner, who is married to Ross, walked out of the inauguration ceremony after losing her bid for chairperson to David Collings by 5
votes to 4. Two of the board’s members stood at the ceremony and declared they had been bullied and approached to vote for Schwaner. Shortly after Schwaner’s dramatic exit, her resignation letter was sent to media, citing no confidence in Collings as leader. At the Meet the Candidates evening at East City Wesleyan Church on Monday evening, a pointed question was directed to Ross. “Reflecting on the difficulties of your involvement in recent local
government electioneering, do you think it was wise for a member of parliament to be so involved in local government election matters? Any regrets and learnings?” the question said. Ross was off his seat and half way to the lectern before the question was even finished. “I supported my wife and the team during the local body elections and I don’t resile from the fact I supported my wife – I think a good husband would support their wife.
“I got involved with helping my wife and a group on the local board because back in 2013, that local board wasn’t functioning well and we got together a group to try and change the local board - that was successful and in 2016 I supported them again.” Ross said “if anyone out there standing for election wanted my advice and support I’d give it because that’s what you do as a good local MP. ➤ Turn to Page 11

ead bored of interviewing politicians mouthing the same lines is the only reason former journalist Chlöe Swarbrick got into politics. Recently invited to Howick Intermediate to talk to students on how every voice counts, the former radio journalist turned Green Party candidate for Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill, told them that if they wanted to make a difference they had to stand up and be counted. “Every Mayoral candidate I asked about their hopes and dreams for Tamaki Makaurau said the same things. “I got the impression that none of them were really interested in solving the problems that we face.” Only a third of Auckland votes, she says. “I don’t think that represents democracy.” “I was so frustrated and complained about it to my producers and they said they why don’t you do something about it,” says the former Auckland Mayoral candidate. “So I googled the requirements of candidates standing for office

and found that I had to pay $200 and get two people to endorse me.” The 23-year-old says she is keen to explode the myth of stereotypes. “When you think of politicians, you think of old dudes... not me. “They are 50-year-old men in suits who have the money and power. And they would like it to stay that way. “But I had no money when I started out at the age of 22.
“In fact I had a huge debt after I had graduated from university in law and arts. “I wondered how I’d ever be able to afford a home,” she says. The young entrepreneur took on the challenge of enrolling as a candidate for the 2017 General Elections which follows her much-publicised Mayoral run.. Chlöe’s entry in the political arena was instantly hailed as the arrival of the youngest candidate, and that’s where the story ended. “No one took me seriously as age became my defining feature. “However I was pleasantly surprised that I got 30,000 votes and had lot of people asking me what happens next? “The reason I am with the Green Party is because I strongly believe that New Zealand values are green values,” she says to the school students. “While I have been asked by the school not to speak about Green Party policies as there will be other party candidates talking to you, I can tell you that we were the only party that didn’t congratulate Mr Donald Trump when he took over as President. “We don’t believe in racism and sexism.”

Former prime minister presents challenge coin to Baljit Kaur By FARIDA MASTER
Excellence Award of $2000 to building apprentices. The award is to encourage trades training in secondary schools. Talking about the electorate, Ms Kaur says that Hunua is experiencing ‘growth pains’ as parts of it change from a semirural electorate to urban suburb. “The nature and geographical spread of the electorate means the issues differ across the region. Eastern suburbs like Beachands and Maraetai could do with a post primary school as students are bussed into Howick. “There are no facilities for aged care, and youth lack a place to meet, hang out, make music and art.” There is plenty to be done, she says. “The older folk have had to move from Hunua where they’ve lived all their lives and raised children, due to no options for residential care in the area. Developers have simply not planned for the need of seniors.

“Further, I will advocate for improved health, housing, transportation and employment opportunities for my electorate. “I will lobby to divert funds allocated for improving road safety towards Hunua. Labour has plans to invest in more electric trains. I will press the government hard to implement these plans which will ease pressure on the roads and make commuting to work a much less stressful experience, not to mention reducing carbon emissions.”
Simeon Brown, the National Party candidate for Pakuranga, has welcomed last week’s National Party transport policy summary that details National’s plan for a growing New Zealand. “National is committed to building and maintaining an efficient transport network across the country, to ensure we have the infrastructure required to support our strong economy,” says Mr Brown. “As the candidate for Pakuranga, I’m particularly pleased to see continued emphasis on projects like AMETI and the associated Reeves Road flyover. When completed, these improvements to our local road infrastructure will play a large role in reducing traffic congestion around the electorate.” Today’s policy summary reaffirms a previous announcement by National to accelerate both the construction of the Reeves Road flyover, and the completion of the AMETI Eastern Busway. “Other key parts of National’s transport policy are to bring forward planned work on projects like the East-West Link, the widening of State Highway 20B to improve eastern access to the airport, and to add Airport-Manukau bus priority lanes on State Highway 20,” says Mr Brown. “These projects and others will not only improve traffic flow in Pakuranga, but across Auckland, improvements that are desperately needed sooner as we move more people and freight on our roads.” “If elected, I’ll continue to push for more transport solutions that will ease traffic congestion and provide effective options for commuters in the Eastern suburbs.”

t’s not very often that a former Prime Minister calls on an upcoming politician to tell her that he sees great potential. Labour candidate for Hunua Baljit Kaur was pleasantly surprised when she discovered that Mike Moore, former Labour Prime Minister of New Zealand and Director-General of the World Trade Organisation as well as former ambassador to the United States invited her to his home in Maraetai and gifted her a book titled The 9th Floor. Authored by journalists Guyon Espiner and Tim Watkin, the book presents indepth interviews with five former Prime Ministers of New Zealand—Geoffrey Palmer, Mike Moore, Jim Bolger, Jenny Shipley and Helen Clark— reflecting on the time spent at the 9th floor of the Beehive. Elected at a time when the country was heading to bankruptcy, Mr Moore spoke to Ms Kaur about the New Zealand political landscape and sug-
gested she read the book that gives a deep insight into the prime ministerial decisions that shaped New Zealand. “I was touched that he presented me with a Challenge Coin of the time he was with the World Trade Organisation. It was a huge honour for me,” says the Indian-born Labour candidate for Hunua. Ms Kaur says that attending election debates, public events, campaign meetings, door-knocking, having media interviews and working on fundraising events—along with a full time job with Southern Cross—is a huge learning curve. And with a well-grounded leader like Jacinda Ardern supporting her, she feels empowered. “At our Labour Party fundraiser, Jacinda asked me if she could do the auctioning and she was so good at it. “A bottle of whisky signed by her, got us $1000,” she says. Last week Ms Kaur accompanied Ms Ardern to a building site where she announced the Prime Minister’s Vocational

oting in the 2017 General Election kicked off in earnest this week when advance voting places, and will go through until election day on Saturday September 23. The first EasyVote packs started arriving in voters’ letter boxes on Monday, with 3.16 million to be delivered over the week. EasyVote packs are being sent to all voters who were enrolled before August 23 and include a personalised EasyVote card which makes voting quicker. There are 485 advance voting places around the country, up from 295 in 2014. Opening hours vary between voting places to
suit local needs. “There has been a big increase in advance voting over the past two elections, so this election, we are providing even more voting places in convenient locations where people can cast an early vote,” says Alicia Wright, chief electoral officer. “People will also be able to enrol, check or update their enrolment details at any advance voting place – so they’ll be able to enrol and vote at the same time. “Advance voting places are located where people live, work, study and shop, including universities and shopping malls, and many of them are open after

Maori party president Tukoroirangi Morgan accused the New Zealand Herald “beefed up” on its front page last week. “Today’s <Tuesday’s>decision by the commission confirms what I said last week – that Wetex is the victim of a smear campaign led by a troublemaker angry that he didn’t want her as his campaign manager. Mr Kang, who is contesting the Botany electorate, said the smear campaign was “down-right nasty and vicious”. “My family has been affected in ways I cannot describe. Better infrastructure Growing pains for Hunua for Hunua - Bayly N
ational MP Andrew Bayly says ensuring the Hunua electorate gets its fair share of infrastructure and resources is top of his priorities list. Bayly, who has been the MP for Hunua since 2014, is particularly determined to push for improvements in high-growth areas such as Beachlands, Maraetai and Clevedon. While Bayly is pleased with the improvements already seen in the electorate since he was elected, including plans for a new 4-lane expressway between Pukekohe and Drury underway and funding for a new electrified railway between Pukekohe and Papakura, he says there is so much more he wants to do. He says often people underestimate how much communities along the Pohutakawa Coast are set to grow and the significant demand for good public transport, schools and watercare upgrades there is. “Auckland council has priorities across the whole of Auckland City and it’s my job to be

A little gem in the vibrant village, Lily Whyte has become a Howick icon, standing the test of time and finding its way into the hearts of many. Customers who travelled from near and far to experience the Lily Whyte charm and high-quality garments can always trust they would be greeted with a warm smile and friendly chat from business owner Judy Bruce. Judy says she couldn’t be leaving the store in better hands with the new owner, Meg. Meg says she is excited by the opportunity and will continue to provide the service that the people of Howick expect and have come to love. She says she can’t wait to meet all the Lily Whyte Lingerie customers so please pop in to store and say hello. General Elections 2017 – Election Day: Saturday, September 23
Botany candidates answer some hard questions By FARIDA MASTER and KELLY TEED
R
espectful. That’s the impression that around a 100 people who attended the Meet the Candidates Night (Botany electorate) on Monday evening, got. The event organised, by Rev Dr Richard Waugh and Lloyd Wong at the East City Wesleyan Church in Burswood, started on a beautiful note with Bucklands Beach
Primary student Cail Bowlin singing the national anthem. There was no heckling, heated arguments or candidates biting off each other’s heads – was the unanimous feedback from spectators who had gathered on a chilly evening to meet the Botany candidates for the General Election. Which says a lot about sitting National MP Jami–Lee Ross, Labour candidate Tofik Mame-
dov, Green Party candidate Julie Zhu and NZ First candidate Jenny Marcroft (not contesting from the Botany area but from the Tamaki electorate). However missing on stage was the newly-appointed leader of United Front and Botany candidate Damian Light and Maori Party candidate for Botany Wetex Kang. Both have been in the spotlight of late.

They would have added some fire to the debate some felt, but Lloyd Wong, facilitator for the evening, explained that polls indicated minor parties have little or no bearing on the election result. With a tight time frame, each candidate was given three minutes to outline party policies on housing, transport and immigration. Mr Mamedov missed out on some time as he started by requesting the audience to observe silence in memory of the people who lost their lives in 9/11 terror attacks. He spoke about his personal journey as he arrived in Auckland from a shower of bullets between Azerbaijan forces and the Russians. Ms Zhu impressed people with her fluency in Te Reo Maori as she welcomed the audience and thanked the organisers. MP for six-and-a-half years, Mr Ross spoke about the blend of multiculturalism and how Botany remains a family-friendly area with good schools and people who care about their footpaths. Ms Marcroft said she had been a broadcaster sitting on the fence and has now decided to use her voice in a different way and step out from the comfort of the studio and onto the frontline. Policies outlined, it was question time on subjects including the teacher shortage, superannuation, the employers’ contribution to KiwiSaver ceasing once staff turn 65, law and order, mental health and suicide. However one took Mr Ross by surprise, referring to the controversial walk-out of his wife and former Howick Local Board member Lucy Schwaner moments after being sworn in last November. “Reflecting on the difficulties of your involvement in recent local government electioneering, do you think it was wise for a Member of Parliament to be so involved in local government election matters? Any regrets?” Sale ends MrSunday Ross 5pm answered it calmly and continued answering questions with the ease of a seasoned politician.

Euthanasia was a hot topic. Ms Zhu shared about her father passing away earlier in the year. “He was brain dead and I know what it is to relieve the suffering of the individual as well as family,” she said. Going to Azerbaijan to meet his grandmother whom he was closest to just before she died, Mr Mamedov said: “I can understand why people may want to use euthanasia because of the suffering. But I’m against it. In my personal experience, I saw my grandmother in her last nine days and I cherished every minute of it. I wouldn’t take that away from her or myself.” Mr Ross spoke about a conscience vote. “People should have the freedom of choice and with rules in place. There should be no pressure,” he said. “We should go for a binding referendum,” said Ms Marcroft. Public vote on the candidates: ■ Mr Ross: Experience speaks, precise and to the point answers ■ Mr Mamedov: compassionate, man with a heart. ■ Ms Zhu: switched on, fiery politician in the making ■ The event: great way to see and hear Botany candidates in person

Concern over new park contract By Therese Henkin
T
he grass may not be greener, but it certainly will be longer in the Howick Botany ward parks and reserves. Grass will be allowed to grow up to a maximum of 200mm tall, almost as high as a litre milk bottle, before it needs to be cut, and trees could go without pruning for as long as five years. These are just two of the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) measures in Auckland Council’s latest parks maintenance contract for the Howick Botany ward. The KPIs were released to East Tamaki Heights resident Mark Hanson, who says he was keen to find out if the council would hold the new contractor to account financially for failure to meet the KPI requirements. The Botany local says it was “just a simple inquiry” that was treated as a Local Government Official Information Act (LGOIMA) request by Auckland Council. The response said the grass on a neighbourhood park “should be no shorter than 50mm and no higher than 200mm” and the tree trimming allows for “a cyclic tree pruning rotation of five years for street trees.” “That’s almost as tall as a litre bottle of milk and it’s too long. I think the council has been a bit of a soft touch on this on this maxi-

mum measure,” Hanson says. The new contracts were given to Australian company Ventia and came into effect in July. “Its early days, so yes let’s give them some time, but I don’t hold out much hope. All these contractors want to do is the bare minimum – and it’s our money, we’re paying for it.” Simon Randall, the council’s Acting Head Of Operational Management And Maintenance says he is confident that Aucklander’s can expect to see expect better maintenance of their local parks under the new contracts. “Our maintenance contracts, including for parks, are outcomes
based now – this means they carry out the work as and when it’s needed rather than on a preset schedule,” he says. The LGOIMA response said “The contracts have performance management mechanisms for failure to meet contract KPIs and a dedicated team that will monitor the outcomes and deliverables. “Council retains the right to withhold up to 10 per cent of a monthly invoice for continuing, non-mitigated performance breaches.” Mr Hanson said while ‘continuing non-mitigated breaches’ was fairly open, the council response is encouraging. Howick local board member John Spiller says he has seen a significant deterioration in park maintenance in recent years and is looking forward to improved outcomes with the new providers. “My view on mowing frequencies of parks and reserves is that this should be carried out to provide maximum enjoyment and access to these special places with an emphasis on frequency over the warmer months,” he says. “It seems a wasteful practice to mow at set frequencies throughout the year when people are not using the parks nearly as much over late autumn, winter and early spring.”

Treatment ‘best thing I ever did’ By Kelly Teed
F
Faye Braddock was desperate to improve her quality of life.
she spent 32 days – 29 of which were gruelling treatment days – before arriving home on June 25. The standard time frame to know whether or not the treatment has worked is generally three years – but for Faye, the change was near

instant. “They call it the HSCT rollercoaster – you come up and down and it could be three years before you reach your full capacity, but crikey it was instant for me,” she said.
“We went out for a walk around Cornwall Park and took the kids to the playground and to the observatory. We parked further out and walked, had a little run, played with scooters – there’s just no way I could have done that before. “There’s no way I could have spent a day at the park with the children and go out and have fun together like we did that day. It’s just incredible.” She says she enjoyed the long flight home because “this is where it all ends, but this is where it all starts as well.” Previously, Faye had said she was inspired by the story of Australian woman and previous MS sufferer, Kristi Cruise. Before the AHSCT treatment, she’d been confined to a wheelchair. Three years after receiving the treatment, she ran a marathon. “I’d love to be able to do something like that,” she says now. “I don’t know how to train but I’d love to learn how to train just because I could. “I’ve never felt better in my life.”
There were nasty, vicious attacks, says MP ➤➤From page 1 “My wife made a decision to resign from the Howick Local Board last year. She felt the board was dysfunctional and she felt, as a group of them did, that they would try and change the leadership of that board from within. She was not successful.
“She knew that the dynamic on the board, where there were nasty, vicious attacks and there were personalities there that would make her life hell, so in the interest of herself and her own mental health and our family, she had to walk away and I think walking away from
something and standing up and saying ‘this isn’t working for me, this isn’t working for the situation, walking away was the right and honourable thing to do’. “Yes it cost money. Democracy does cost money. That Howick Local Board needs a lot of work to change it and work it out but
my wife made a decision she felt was in the best interest of the community to walk away from what was a particularly nasty situation on that board. “I hope the public look at that board more at the next local body election. Would I support my wife again? Absolutely.”

aye Braddock is a very different woman to the one she was two months ago. When the Times last spoke to her in late March, she was battling extreme fatigue and struggling with her cognitive function and mobility. She struggled finding the right word in sentences, couldn’t walk far and was far from operating at full capacity. Desperate to recover and improve her quality of life for her young family, she was busy fundraising for the only known treatment to stop Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in its tracks – Autologous Hematopoetic Stem Cell Transplantation (AHSCT). MS is a long-lasting autoimmune disease that affects the brain, spinal cord and central nervous system. It causes the immune system to attack the myelin which wraps around nerve fibres to protect them. Without this outer shell, nerves become damaged which in turn prevents the brain from sending signals through the body correctly. The longer MS is left without treatment, the more damage that is caused. AHSCT is still seen by some medical professionals as an experimental treatment. It is a type of transplantation that uses the person’s own stem cells which are collected, stored in sub-zero temperatures and then replanted at a later date after a high dose of chemotherapy or immunosuppressive therapy. The immune system then begins to rebuild itself, theoretically with no memory of the MS disease. Faye travelled to Moscow where
“The scary thing about MS is you just don’t know what lies ahead. I didn’t want anything else to lie ahead, I just wanted it to get no worse. But the fact I’ve just had this massive U-turn and things are just incredibly functional, way better than even before. “I haven’t felt this good since before I had children.” It wasn’t until feeling better that Faye realised just how sick she had been before. “Now I’m back at work I’m realising what a poor job I was doing before I went away. Now I’m doing the same thing and I’m thinking ‘crikey’. Before it would take me a whole day to do something and I don’t even know if I was doing it properly “It’s just having that comparison – it’s only going to a place when you went to before and you think ‘wow I couldn’t do that, but now I can’”. In the first Times story, Faye spoke of her two young children and how they needed her to be fully functioning as a parent. Now, she’s able to chase them around the park.

Mr Goff, please explain?

The Auckland Council has produced a booklet for Council employees called ”Lessons for Successful Mana Whenua Engagement” which include statements such as: ■ Prioritising Mana Whenua contact and engagement (along with the local board, as key governance stakeholders) ■ Mana Whenua should be engaged earlier than the general public (i.e. earlier in the project development lifecycle) and, in line with local boards, should have greater levels of shared decision-making power than other stakeholders ■ Set up project governance structures that reflect the importance of Mana Whenua as cogovernors. ■ Empower Mana Whenua to propose the scope and extent of their involvement. This gives priority to Mana Whenua and is not democratic. Also are they not beating the gun by describing Mana Whenua as co-governors. when co-governance has not taken place and the majority of our councillors are still democratically elected and this is the way it should be. What is going on and what is Mayor Goff up to?

Who would kill a cat?
I was horrified to read that someone thought it would be fun to shoot a cat with a slug gun (Times August 10) and I dread that this is a missing, loved pet that had wandered off. I know how hard it is to have a pet wander off and I hope this never happens to the one that I lost. It is unkind and illegal to do that to humans; but what serious offence could the cat commit for this person (or people) to perceive them as so deserving? Cats can be hard to love if they aren’t particularly sociable or friendly. I know from owning one like that but that doesn’t make it ok to torture and kill them. I hope this person (or people) who killed this cat in such an inhumane way are caught and sent to prison. I send my condolences to the owners of this cat; and any other pets killed in ways like this. It’s not clever or amusing.

Question of leadership
Good leaders are visionaries and without a vision, our people suffer. Are you looking for leadership in the political circus? Don’t. It’s not there. Visionary leadership lies elsewhere. Politicians often enter with good personal ambitions to improve life

Sign of things to come? In its so-called wisdom, the Auckland Council has decided to revise the way inorganic waste is collected. In future, ratepayers will have to book a pick-up from their properties with the council. Many will decide not to, and others will dump for all New Zealander. But the party-line truncates personal vision. It then becomes sufficient for them to draw the generous salary/perks package and to respond glibly to public pressures either from the liberal left or from the conservative right. Vision, truth, patience, wisdom, goodwill and righteousness are all hallmarks associated with good leaders. The opposite is true too. Deception, corruption, greed, nepotism and dirty politics we associate with corrupt leaders. Have a look at Hillary Clinton in Washington DC to see how deep that entanglement works. Visionaries are rare but, having said that, they are present here in NZ in all walks of life and they are doing a remarkable, unheralded, life-affirming work. Their efforts amongst us are acknowledged.

Misleading advertising?
The electronic and print media are inundated with various advertisements offering free hearing checks. Wide publicity is afforded enticing unsuspecting persons affected by various forms of hearing loss. Attracted by the advertisements my wife and myself, senior citizens, visited two institutions attempting to obtain some relief for our hearing deficiency and obtain some professional advice. Regrettably we had no meaningful relief from the two institu-
their rubbish anywhere they like. The attached photos show dumped rubbish around Pigeon Mountain Reserve (Pigeon Mountain Rd by the tennis courts, and also Gills Rd).

tions we visited. The checks were superficial and the endeavours of the audiologists were essentially directed to the marketing of the hearing aids. The availability, easy terms of purchase and affordability, my wife and myself (found) was naturally disappointing. While in a state of despondency, a close family friend advised us to visit Hearing Therapy – Life Unlimited, commending this institution for highly professionalised services. Two months ago we visited this institution and were so please by the exemplary and admirable manner (in which) we were advised. The checks were comprehensive and the exact problems ascertained. The audiologist who conducted the checks displayed a rare sense of professionalism and dedication to duty. She allayed our fears and apprehensions and was extremely friendly. It is a commendable institution.

Good work with bins
Congratulations to the contractors who empty our recycling bins and now our new Red Tops. Several weeks ago the empty bins along part of Chapel Road were placed on their sides so that they weren’t blown away by blustery winds and even positioned in such a way that the lids had a better chance of staying shut. I’m told that the Red Tops have been treated similarly. Well done!

St Kents win nationals T
he Saint Kentigern girls football team has won the nationals for the first time beating Mt Albert Grammar (MAGS) 6-5 on penalties after drawing 4-all at the end of extra time at the weekend. MAGS lead 2-0 at half-time but St Kents evened the tally at full-time. St Kents beat Rangiora in the semi-final and Westlake in the quarter-final. Meanwhile the college’s netball team has won the Upper North Island Championships beating MAGS in the final 39-38. They now move on to the National championships in October in Rotorua. St Kents’ sport manager Lynne Scutt said Tori Kolose, Ashleigh Garner and Tayla Earle were named in the tournament team while Earle was named mid-courter of the tournament and also player of the tournament . And St Kents’ badminton boys were second in the NZSS badminton champs.
News bites Grants for locals The New Zealand Community Trust has awarded a number of grants Auckland-wide, including to numerous local groups. Pakuranga College received $30,000 towards bleacher seating, Totara Park Riding for the Disabled received $3000 towards the salary of a group coach, Auckland Ice Figure Skating Club $4615.20 for ice hire from Paradice Botany, Bucklands Beach Yacht Club $10,000 towards the purchase of outboard engines, Howick & Districts Historical Society $10,000 for maintenance work at the Howick Historical Village. The St Kents girls football team are national champs after a nail-biting final.
“It’s the first time in many years Saint Kentigern have entered a boys team into the nationals champs,” said Scutt. Seeded 4th going into the tournament, the boys won their first four games convincingly, then drew with top seeds Westlake, beat the second

consecutive play-off loss. Fitzpatrick hit a closing six-under 64 to end on 14 under. Fox is 22nd in the European Tour’s points and has won close to 1 million Euros ($1.65m). Fox told the Times: “(I’m) happy with the week, especially after having a bit of time off. I expected a bit of rust but played some nice golf. The course was fun to play and Crans-Montana was a spectacular place to stay. His next tournament is the KLM Open in Holland starting today (Thursday).

Hospitality, tourism serve up more jobs The hospitality and tourism industry is one of the fastest growing industries on jobs site Seek, driven by strong growth in tourism numbers from both domestic and foreign visitors. Nationally over the past three months [May to July 2017], job ads on Seek for the Hospitality & Tourism industry grew 9 per cent when compared to the same period last year. Janet Faulding, general manager for Seek New Zealand, said hospitality and tourism is currently the 11th largest advertising industry on Seek [May to July 2017]. “Helping fuel job ad growth on Seek across the hospitality and tourism industry is the increasing demand for professionals to service the rising number of tourists visiting New Zealand and an increase of Kiwis travelling domestically,” said Faulding. “The latest International Travel and Migration report, conducted by Stats NZ, found the number of international visitors to New Zealand rose by 10 per cent y/y in June 2017 when compared to June 2016,” said Faulding. Over the past three months, the jobs in the hospitality and tourism industry that offered the most opportunities on Seek were predominately food service roles: MOST JOB OPPORTUNITIES – % GROWTH MAY-JULY 17 V MAY-JULY 16 ■ Chefs/Cooks 7% ■ Management 9% ■ Bar & beverage staff 19%

ension. That’s what audiences can expect at WWW.HLT.ORG.NZ Howick Little Theatre’s latest production, Dial M for Murder. The psychological thriller, directed by Alex Gleed, focuses on Tony, an ex-professional tennis player who has recently retired and thus his income drops. In order to inherit some cash, he hatches a plan to have his wife – who he married for money – killed. A cunning plan...except it all goes horribly wrong. Gleed says audiences can expect to be taken on a thrilling journey as they watch Tony try to cover his tracks and avoid detection. The play is “not a very conventional murder mystery,” says Gleed. “[It] operates entirely on tension – and a lot of subtext as well.” Unlike a traditional whodunnit, where the audience is left to figure out what has happened, Dial M for Murder attendees will be fully informed from the start, leaving the characters to muddle their way through the events. The play has been in almost constant production around the world since being written by Frederick Knott in 1952 before being adapted into a film by Alfred Hitchock in 1954. Gleed describes it as a “timeless classic” that” has serious longevity”. “People who really enjoy Hitchcock films and suspense and being on the edge of their seat will really enjoy it.” ■ Dial M for Murder is on at Howick Little Theatre now until September 30. roperty Institute of New Zealand chief executive Ashley Church says the latest Institute poll points to a sea change in sentiment about house prices. According to the regular poll, which is commissioned by the Institute, the number of people expecting house prices to rise in the next six months is down to 30 per cent – the lowest level since the poll started in November last year and well down on the June result of 43 per cent. Mr Church says a definite trend is now clear. “When we started this data series in November last year, the number of New Zealanders expecting house prices to increase in the next six months outstripped the number of people expecting prices to flatline by a huge margin. “But our August poll, shows the number of people now expecting house prices to rise, is dwarfed by those expecting property prices to stay the same”. Mr Church says that those who are expecting ‘no change’ in prices have jumped from 28 per cent, in November last year, to 45 per cent, in August – while those expecting property price increases have nearly halved from 56 per cent to 30 per cent. However, Mr Church says that, while the change in poll results is
dramatic, it doesn’t reflect widespread panic about house prices falling. “The expectation of a decrease in prices has risen from a low of 8 per cent in November – but it’s still only at 17 per cent – which suggests that people haven’t bought into the hype about a ‘correction’”. Mr Church says that the results can partly be explained by the fact that this is an election year. He points to recent data released by the Property Institute in partnership with data company Valocity which indicates that that there is a direct relationship between elections and a slowdown in the housing market and he says that the turnaround in sentiment illustrated in the Institute’s latest poll may be a reflection of that. “Since April, the trend has been dis-
tinct. Whether or not it’s a combination of the election, Reserve Bank constraints on the market or bank rationing of credit, this latest poll shows that Kiwis are not expecting house price inflation to continue at anything like the levels they were expecting just last year”. He says warnings that mortgage interest rates are trending upward is probably also impacting on market perceptions. “Clearly, many home owners are nervously eyeing their borrowing levels and monitoring interest rates, while investors may also be reassessing their position. It’s a scary time for those who are highly geared”. Mr Church notes that fears about foreign investors having an impact on house prices are also tapering off with the poll showing that people now see other factors as increasingly important. “In every poll we’ve done we’ve asked ‘who has the biggest impact on house prices’ and foreign investors have repeatedly been singled out as the biggest factor by a good margin. But our August poll shows that developers are now right up there.” “There’s been a slight softening in people’s attitude to foreign investors, and a hardening of their views towards domestic influencers.”

Sopoaga deserves start

gainst a fast moving, in-your-face defence, I believe Lima Sopoaga and Ryan Crotty would form a better All Blacks combination than Beauden Barrett and Sonny Bill Williams. While only a fool would argue against Steve Hansen’s 89 per cent success record as New Zealand coach, the Barrett/Williams combo has struggled this season against Argentina and the British and Irish Lions. Individually, both have special gifts with Barrett’s brilliance earning him the International Player of the Year award last year, just as Dan Carter did culminating with the All Blacks 2015 World Cup triumph. Interestingly, Carter’s World Cup success justified the loyalty shown him by selectors Hansen, Ian Foster and Grant Fox in the face of critics who claimed he was well past his used-by date. Hansen has always put great store by experience and Carter delivered with a masterly, all-round performance when it counted most.

Agnew’s Angle Blessed with greater speed and try-scoring habit, Barrett is a sharper attacker than Carter. But he lacks his superb tactical nous and ability to put team-mates into gaps with a perfectly timed draw and pass. Consequently, Barrett and his team struggled against Argentina before Sopoaga came to the rescue to slot into first-five and guide the All Blacks to a 39-22 win with a composed performance. However Hansen was adamant Barrett would remain the starting No 10 for this Saturday’s test against South Africa and bridled at suggestions Sopoaga was the more reliable goal-kicker. In truth, with Sopoaga giving the backline better direction, Barrett looked more comfortable at fullback from where he scored a sharp try in

the dying stages. Interestingly that was set up from a sweetly-timed pass from Ngani Laumape, his Hurricanes team-mate who replaced Sonny Bill Williams. With Ben Smith on sabbatical and injured Jordie Barrett out for the season, Beauden Barrett looks the best No 15 fit in their absence. To accommodate Williams, the selectors have shunted Ryan Crotty out to centre despite the fact his communicative skills and all round skills make him the best No 12 in the country. Certainly he was a major success there last year when combining so successfully with international rookie Anton Lienert-Brown. The other second-five option is the powerful Laumape, scorer of an amazing 15 tries this season for the Hurricanes. However he could be a more dangerous attacking threat at centre if the selectors wished to experiment. Meanwhile, it seems they will stand by Barrett at 10 in the hope he can overcome the problems he has faced against

Success for Fencibles girls Fencibles 11th Grade Girls soccer team are on their way to the top. Coach Stewart Taylor says the girls have been dominating their age group for a number of years, winning the Auckland Football Federation Championship for tenth grade last year so convincingly that they decided to skip playing 11th grade and play them up to 12th grade this season. “This meant for a lot of the girls who were still only 10 and 11 years old they were playing against 12 and 13 year old girls, “said Taylor. “They played the first round of grading for 12th grade which consisted of around 26 teams, which were to be split into 1st, 2nd and 3rd division. “Our girls were put into the 12th grade 1st division going on to finish the championship in 4th place against some really strong teams and clubs, this was a fantastic achievement as a lot of clubs do not like to play kids teams up a grade.” The team is currently training for their end of season trip to the Nationals Soccer Tournament in Taupo on October 13 and 14.

a swarming defence. Like Barrett, 78kg Damian McKenzie is an electrifying, crackerjack attacker who can shred any defence but has a few chinks to his armour. Against the Pumas he struggled to cope with the high punts rained on him because he stood too deep. Sometimes his penchant for hanging around the breakdowns also leaves his team exposed to counter attacks when possession is lost. Still he remains a brave, exciting player, although his best position still looks to be first-five. Also exciting is dynamic Tongan blindside flanker Vaea Fifita who showed incredible pace in scoring a try that rivalled Ian Kirkpatrick’s Christchurch one against the 1971 British and Irish Lions. Having twice beaten Argentina before the weekend’s 23-all draw with Australia, South Africa will fancy their chances against the All Blacks. ■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author.

Mission totally possible By KELLY TEED
T
housands of people will take part in the Sydney Marathon this month – but two local men are doing it with a point of difference. Brothers-in-law, Steve Millar and Phil Moon are heading across the ditch to take part in this year’s half marathon event – but it will be no ordinary race. On April 16 2016 – aged just 40 – Steve suffered an extremely rare medical event, leaving him paralysed on the right side of his body and with limited verbal communication although he remains fully present in understanding what is going on in conversations. Steve’s wife, Tina recalls the events of that day like it was yesterday. “Steve was out on a job at work when he started to feel unwell. He phoned his dispatcher but what Steve was saying and what the dispatcher was hearing were two completely different things.” Thanks to GPS tracking in Steve’s vehicle, the dispatcher was able to send an ambulance to Steve’s aid who had fallen unconscious. He was rushed to Auckland City Hospital and into a six-hour surgery where it was revealed he had suffered an arteriovenous malformation (AVM). An AVM occurs when a tangle of blood vessels in the brain – or on its
surface bypasses normal brain tissue and directly diverts blood from the arteries to the veins – essentially causing a bleed on the brain. AVMs are thought to occur in less than one per cent of the general population. Steve was put into an induced coma for 2-3 days to help reduce the swelling on his brain. “It was scary,” recalled Tina. “He was on life support machines, his head was bandaged up, there was tubes and bits everywhere.” As Steve slowly progressed, he was transferred from ICU to the critical care unit before being transferred to Middlemore Hospital where he spent the next seven months. After finally arriving home on January 4 2017, brother-in-law Phil was struck by a brainwave. “[Coming home from hospital is] obviously a really big adjustment. After a period of time you get into a routine and it’s a little bit like groundhog day, going from bed to lounge, bed to lounge,” he said. “Steve was always pretty active – [he’d] take his mountain bike to Woodhill [forest], go fishing. He doesn’t like sitting still for long. “I’m quite active myself… and I sort of thought ‘why does this have to be it? Why can’t we do something?’ “The original idea was to do the Auckland Marathon,” said Phil. “I asked Steve if he was keen and he lit
up like a bloody Christmas tree.” But after discovering the Auckland Marathon didn’t allow wheel chairs, it was back to the drawing board. After some more research, they settled on Sydney. It’s been far from an easy process – in fact the beginning was “continual dead ends,” said Phil. But as word spread, offers of help began flooding in. Disability sports organisation ParaFed donated a retired Paralympics wheelchair that an engineer in Hamilton helped to modify to Steve’s needs. The result is a nifty little contraption- Steve drives with his feet and controls the brakes while Phil pushes it from behind. The pair trains frequently – both in the chair and at the gym where Steve has become something of a local celebrity. Despite the seemingly never-ending roadblocks, Steve and Phil – and the huge support crew behind them – refuse to give up. “The nicest thing is this whole journey and that Steve has something to look forward to. Life doesn’t have to be about sitting in a lounge and a bedroom and every time Steve gets in that chair – he’s an expert in steering it – he just lights up. “It’s neat to have that one thing everyone can share in. Steve really enjoys it – he doesn’t seem to care if it’s raining. I say ‘no we can’t go, it’s raining’ and he says ‘well why not?’
That quip earns a cheeky smile from Steve. Phil fights back emotion as he speaks of their goal to see Steve walk with assistance the final few metres of the course. “Anything’s possible really. “The thought of crossing the finish line in Sydney is pretty special – it’s just a matter of what next.” ■ Find out more about Steve’s journey at millars-path.com ■ Steve requires ongoing physical therapy to help him walk again – to donate go to givealittle.co.nz/ cause/millarsmarathon

For a complete list, go to www.brainstormtuition.com
We are only 2 months away from the end of year exams. Prepare for this now with our holiday courses of 2 hours per day and learn how to apply your knowledge to pass the exams well
TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”
