neighbour of the Bucklands Beach home left sitting precariously on the edge of a collapsed cliff says she is disappointed with Auckland Council’s lack of concern for homeowners of Clovelly Road’s cliff top houses. This follows a massive landslip in which a 10-metre high cliff face collapsed claiming half of a Clovelly Road home’s backyard on Sunday. A slab of the deck has been left hanging over the cliff and occupants of the neighbouring properties have been warned off going too close to the edge. The slip was filmed by Bucklands Beach resident Ben Dellabarca who says his dogs were underneath the cliff just moments before it collapsed onto Eastern Beach. The concerned neighbour, who declined to be named, says these slips are devastating for home owners, and the process of making a claim with the Earthquake Commission (EQC) – who deal with these sorts of problems - can take months.

“One of our other neighbours had a slip at Easter time and he is still trying to deal with EQC... council don’t seem to care all that much if the cliff collapses, because it’s not their problem, its EQC’s problem,” she says. “Further down the road, a house was condemned just a few weeks ago after another slip.” The Clovelly Road resident says taking precautions to protect her home from the same fate proved a lengthy and drawn-out process. She says it took more than two years to have a retaining wall signed off by council that would protect her home from landslips. The wall was signed off just weeks before Sunday’s slip. “When we bought this house we were told by the geotech engineers who surveyed the property that the land we were on could be unstable,” she says. “We decided to put the wall in, but it just got held up by council. They made us bend over backwards to get it done and it’s only just been completed now.”

She says she is glad to finally have it completed, fearing for the safety of her home and her family. Auckland Council geotechnical engineer Ross Roberts says houses built on cliff tops face unique risks and Clovelly Road has a history of instability. “The council has today investigated the slip and its impact on the buildings directly at the top of the cliff face. “We have also ensured the area below the slip is made safe for the public, including putting up signage,” Roberts said on Monday. “Neither the property filmed by a member of the public nor two neighbouring properties are considered dangerous.” He says unless there is further movement that directly affects any buildings, this is a private matter and will be dealt with by individual owners and EQC. Former Local Board member and Clovelly Road resident Steve Udy says people need to understand the dangers of chasing a beautiful view.
“There are a section of houses along Clovelly Road which are built in what I think is just a shade too close to the cliff. “When they build those, they must understand Auckland’s coastline is fairly crumbly and there are risks,” he says. Udy says there needs to be a sensible look at how many houses the Eastern Beach coastline can sustain and people need to be cautious when extending their properties towards the cliffs edge. There needs to be clearer distance guidelines from Auckland Council, Udy says, to ensure property owners are building a safe distance from the edge of the cliff. The Clovelly Road property of former Manukau City mayor Sir Barry Curtis succumbed to a cliff collapse in 2008. “We need to be very sensible, the council, property developers, owners, everyone, and look at how much intensity can a fragile area like this stand,” says Udy. “I think Mother Nature is saying this is too much.”

is a key determinant of how a government is doing. “Contamination of water up North is not a situation we should be facing in New Zealand. We need to attack the problem now if we don’t want to boil our water.” The former Pakuranga College student says she is not one of those “loony hippies” that people think the Green Party to be. Currently juggling a 20-hour freelance assignment as outreach manager at the Red Leap theatre and a 10-hour job as programme assistant at the Basement Theatre in the city, she has her hands full with a movie fundraiser An Inconvenient sequel : Truth to Power for the Green Party at the Monterey Cinemas on Thursday August 24. She is also busy producing a live documentary theatre show titled OTHER [Chinese] at the Q Theatre on Thursday, September 7-16. It’s too close to the General Election date and she moans saying, she doesn’t have the luxury like some other young candidate of being a full-time politician. And while she looks at the backbenchers in Parliament and marvels at “the way they can dodge the question so well”, she says she is “looking forward to helping support the Labour Party and also hold them to account”.

he last few weeks have been tough for Julie Zhu. The Green Party candidate for Botany says she took a day to grieve and is now continuing her fight so that former Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei’s resignation is not wasted. With a background in arts, theatre, film and photography she is of the opinion that young people must be involved in politics. The 24-year-old is passionate about standing up for what is right. “East Auckland has such a diverse population and I think leadership should be well represented so that people have an equal go.” She says that being young and Asian, it is important for her to open up the gates for other young women of colour to feel confident enough to be heard and step into public life. “I never had an ambition to be involved in politics and always thought it to be distant and boring,” says the young actress, director and producer of theatre and films. She first contested for the Local Board elections, Botany subdivision in 2016. Julie is quick to point out that she has always been passionate about social change. “I feel strongly about promoting

social justice,” she says. Born in Xi’an, China, she arrived in NZ at the age of four, living almost exclusively in east Auckland. She attributes being a part of the Green Party as plain common sense. “I am standing for a party that believes in protecting the environment, social justice, reducing inequality and understanding people who are not necessarily like you,” she says, about wanting to change the fabric of society. “Climate change has been the biggest existential crisis of our generation and from going carbon neutral in 1950 our carbon emission has gone higher by 19 per cent – which

General Elections 2017 – Election Day: Saturday, September 23
Dunne done with politics Peter Dunne is bowing out of politics. The United Future leader has announced he will not seek re-election in the upcoming General Election. Dunne has been the MP for Ohariu for 33 years and sole leader of United Future since 2008. United Future’s Botany candidate Damian Light is number two on the party list and has called Dunne’s announcement “a real shame.” “He [Peter Dunne] is part of the reason I’m in politics so it’s a real shame.” Light said “we always knew this day would come….but the party’s always been more than just Peter. “We’ve got good policies and good candidates and we’ll continue campaigning.” Light said while Dunne’s announcement has made the campaign harder in some ways, it’s “still the same election and same campaign.” On being asked if he would step up as party
leader, Light told the Times they hadn’t had those discussions yet. “We don’t really have a precedent for this.” Dunne said in a media statement that “the current political environment is extremely volatile and unpredictable. “However, I have concluded, based on recent polling, and other soundings I have been taking over the last few weeks, that, the volatility and uncertainty notwithstanding, there is now a mood amongst Ohariu voters for a change of MP, which is unlikely to alter.” He said the shift in voter sentiment is “quite at variance” with polling and other data he had seen throughout the year which he had based his earlier decision on to seek a 12th term as MP. Dunne said that while he is “naturally extremely disappointed”, he recognises and understands the change and absolutely respects ” the electorate’s prerogative to feel that way.”
‘Maori party values align with community’ By THERESE HENKIN
S
he knows it’s a blue electorate, but Maori Party’s Carrie Stoddart-Smith isn’t backing down. “I wanted to stand in a general seat for the Maori Party to show the bicultural foundation of New Zealand... and remind people that being Maori isn’t separate from mainstream politics,” she says. However, she admits that with the Pakuranga seat being held by National for the last 30 years, it’s going to be a challenge. But she has a game plan. The policy analyst, who currently works in Maori development, says that while there are a lot of National voters in the area, with Labour catching up, voters would be smart to look at who National’s support partners are that might get them over the line. “I think the election’s looking to be a first past the post kind of election. People are going to pick red or blue for the party vote,” she says. “National have already said their preferred part-

ners are there existing support partners so there is the opportunity for Pakuranga to give me their seat vote if they are still really hard out on voting blue, knowing that it will secure them a seat for someone who will work with National,” she says confidently. She also points out that the Maori Party share the same whanau-first values prominent in the Pakuranga electorate.
“It’s not just about getting Maori to vote for me, it’s about getting everyone to see the value in having the Maori Party values running through our electorate. The Maori party values actually align with the community.” She says that although the Maori party is willing to work with either Labour or National for the good of the country, Jacinda Arden’s elevation to Labour party leader has given them options. “Seeing a younger woman having that massive impact and getting people engaged again, is good, I love it. I think Labour has been idling by for so long that people were losing hope in what they could achieve.” The mother of three says she is pleased to see votes moving from NZ First to Labour. “The amount of support that NZ First were gaining, given a lot of the things that they were campaigning had an anti-immigration sentiment, a protectionist economy sentiment, didn’t make it look like our future would be very prosperous or equi-
table with them if they had too much power,” she says. Stoddart-Smith says what she wants to see are culture, commerce and community link up to create a thriving local economy in Pakuranga. “We are trying to get more people involved in business to future- proof our workforce and not just the Maori workforce, but the entire country’s work force. It’s about ‘What are we going to do to create jobs for the younger people out here, and grow our local economy?’” She says a huge part of this is about bringing people together on a cultural level and encouraging the shared connections between cultures. She hopes by forging strong international relations in the community and getting people working together would see growth in small to medium enterprises and family-run businesses. “Better growth out this ways means hopefully we don’t all have to sit in the traffic to get jobs out in the city.”

General Elections 2017 – Election Day: Saturday, September 23
Enter the dragon
By NICK KRAUSE
I
’m fascinated by the business card Wetex Kang hands me. It’s heavy and embossed, a respectable card for the Maori Party’s first Asian candidate (he’s standing in the Botany seat). The flipside is more intriguing and features a dragon, one of the most symbolic of Chinese emblems, and the taniwha, also a supernatural creature, this one from Maori mythology. It is not unlike a serpent or dragon. The similarities provide another little clue to the thinking, and there would have been much, behind the Maori’s Party’s move to have this pharmacist beekeeper front them in an electorate that has been ruled by National’s Jami-Lee Ross since 2011. Kang, of Malay and Chinese descent, points to the genealogical ties to Maori spanning several millennia. It’s all in the DNA. The clincher for the Maori Party though would have been the Census stats. Says Kang: “Botany is an ethnically diverse electorate where 39 per cent of the electorate are Asians.” (More than 45 per cent are European and Pacific peoples around 12 per cent). Why stand? “I have been friends with (Tuhoe Maori activist) Tama Iti for 15 years. He was my client. We recently

reconnected,” says Kang. 44. It’s important to know Kang is multi-talented, and is not geographically confined. “I’m a beekeeper. I have three businesses. I have a factory that makes health products like protein powder, capsules. “I also work for Gloriavale – I would be down there to work with them.” Wait, what? Gloriavale, the controversial, isolated religious community on South Island’s West Coast? Yup. They need consultants too, one of Kang’s other skills. He will offer advice on anything from regulatory affairs to, er, beekeeping. Which is how he comes to be back with Tama Iti. “He’s a beekeeper. I’ve been training him for about three months – four guys including his son in the Urewera National Park. Hopefully they can turn it into some-
thing more tangible for the community.” Half his 600 hives are in Ruawai (30km south of Dargaville in Northland) “There is a teaching apiary at the college and we’ve offered apprenticeships there. There’s one at the moment. We want to take three more apprentices.” Yes but how did he come to join the Maori Party? “Initially it started as a joke then I went to the candidates’ workshop (which is) when I realised this was quite massive. Around 5000 years ago we had the same whakapapa (genealogy),” Kang explains. “Tama Iti joked, ‘I guess we left you fullas behind in the waka’.” Tang’s campaign will focus on immigration, cultural integration, law and order, green energy and health. Re NZ First’s Winston Peters: “He’s a bully and a racist against
Maori. He wants to demolish the Maori seats.” Re incumbent Jami-Lee Ross: “Jami is number 27 on the National list so he’s going to get in regardless.” His wrap-up: He want an Asia-Pacific cultural village and Maori Wardens to assist with law and order. A cultural village has been discussed with the One Pacific Party (in June the Maori Party ratified a deal with One Pacific that it hopes will broaden its support base). This village could be set up either on council land or Manurewa marae. “It will showcase the Asian and Pacific cultures. It will be a place for the whole community, for groups to practice tai chi, (anything) - it’s almost like China Town,” he says. “It’s about sharing with younger and older people that New Zealand is inclusive.” Kang, who lives in Avondale with his wife and two children (boy and girl aged 7 and 9) lived in Kilimanjaro Drive, Botany when his family moved up into the area. They are looking at moving to Whitford. It will be good for his bees and his family. And it comes back to family, he says. “They’re (Maori Party) not trying to turn you into Maori – you have to retain your own identity. My billboard says to celebrate diversity. It features four Chinese characters – four oceans, one family.”
Voting in an Election
Voting in a General Election begins two weeks before Election Day (September 11). You can vote whenever is convenient for you. To be eligible to vote in an election, you need to be enrolled by the Friday before Election Day (September 23). The easiest way to vote is to go to a voting place in your electorate during the voting period. There’ll be someone there to show you where to go and what to do. However if you can’t get to a voting place, there are other options available to you. Information about where, when and how to vote is available closer to election day for any general election or by-election. This information will also be in your EasyVote information pack, which you will receive about a week before election day, or on freephone 0800 36 76 56. If you have an EasyVote card take it with you when you go to vote and give it to the person issuing your voting paper. It will help them find you on the electoral roll. They’ll ask you your name and address then give you a voting paper. If you don’t have an EasyVote card, you will need to give the person issuing your vote your full name and address. If your name isn’t on the printed roll at the voting place, you’ll need to fill in an extra form.
Reasons your name might not be on the printed roll ■ You’re not enrolled ■ You enrolled after the roll for election day was printed ■ You’re enrolled in a different electorate ■ You’re on the unpublished roll
Get ready to roll. You will now have received your new rubbish bin. From Monday 4th September we’ll be starting bin collections. Auckland Council will no longer collect rubbish bags after Friday 1st September. To make sure your rubbish is picked up, put it in your bin and place the bin on your kerb by 7am on your usual collection day. Text your address to 3169 to sign up for a free text reminder to find out when it’s time to switch from bags to a bin. To find out more, phone 09 928 0334.

Second book launched for local author Hammond Howick author Ruth Hammond has just completed her second book, ‘Being with God’. Due to be launched on Sunday, September 3 ‘Being with God’ is a book of encouragement which invites us to have our own conversations with God about the issues facing each of us in today’s world. The following are reviews received by Ruth: — This is a beautiful personal reflection of Ruth’s journey into a deeper understanding and experience of God. With gentle simplicity, as she shares the thoughts of her heart, her wisdom ‘rings bells’ of understanding, and prompts us into graceful reflection on our own relationship with the God who is Love. – The very Rev’d Peter Beck, Dean of Taranaki/Pirihi matamua o Taranaki

as we are. The simplicity of the writing, the simplicity demonstrated of us approaching God as being a part of our everyday life and the simplicity of our listening to God’s voice in our ‘at-one-ment’ with God, when reading ‘Being with God’ illustrates the fullness of how we can have a continual growing relationship with God. Every life is individual. Ruth speaks of the things in her life, and of how she is aware that in and through those happenings, there are insights for her in her continuing conversation with God. ‘Being with God’ shows how our lives can be enlivened as though a 3D dimension has opened to us. This book is one which is long overdue in its helpfulness. – Jan Harvey

Performance states that on February 22, 2011, New Zealand experienced its second most deadly earthquake. “The magnitude 6.3 quakes struck the Canterbury region, killing 185 people and injuring 2000 more. It caused an estimated $15 billion worth of damage, making it the world’s third most costly earthquake event in history,” he says. Wally Rice of Rices Mall adds that the seismic reinforcement of the Bakehouse has taken place in line with current building requirements and to the highest possible level to minimise risks resulting from seismic activity.

imeon Brown was just 17 when he set his sights on parliament. It was 2008 and after watching in admiration as his grandfather sat on the Eketahuna Borough Council for years, he joined the National party, determined that he too would make a difference. He may not have been able to vote at the time of the 2008 general elections, but he did learn what it takes to be a voice for those who need it, he says. “I couldn’t vote but I tried to make sure that everyone at my high school who could vote did vote. I wasn’t what you would call a disengaged youth,” he smiles. “I am and always have been driven by my belief that this country can be better and politics is a way to make positive change.” The 26-year-old brushes off criticism that he is too young to stand for the Pakuranga electorate. “I’m only going to get older, and I’m only going to get wiser,” he says. “But I put myself out there on my experience and my determination to work hard for this electorate, be a strong voice and make sure that Pakuranga is well represented in parliament.” He says that if anything, being younger allows him to bring greater energy to the role and better reach the youth of New Zealand. “I’ve recently graduated from university, I’ve got a student loan, and we’ve recently bought our first home. I understand the challenges facing young people and young families. So I think that helps me better relate to those issues, and to be able to

encourage young people to get involved.” He says he’s determined to speak to as many people as possible, especially those who feel their vote won’t make a difference. “It’s a matter of really making sure that they realise that their vote is their voice,” he says. He says representing all members of the Pakuranga electorate is not a responsibility he takes lightly. “For me being a local member of parliament is about serving the community and being available and accessible, I want to demonstrate that through my campaigning but it’s also about going forward, if elected that’s how I intend to work.” Brown has knocked on more than 3000 doors so far, sometimes accompanied by his wife Rebecca. “Door knocking puts me at
people’s front doors where they are the most comfortable and I am the least comfortable,” he laughs. “It’s also about listening to what’s important to them. If I’m elected I want to be someone who is known for listening to the community and making sure we take people’s concerns to Wellington.” While the Pakuranga electorate seat has remained safely in the hands of National’s Maurice Williamson since 1987, he says he’s not taking a single vote for granted. “You can’t take people’s support for granted. It needs to be earned and it needs to be something you continue to work for,” he says. “This campaign is designed to demonstrate the National party is active and we want this vote not because we deserve it but because we’re working for it.”

Barry Kirker, the Labour candidate for the Pakuranga electorate, has vented his frustration at the prospect of being charged $500 to do a meet-and-greet walk through at the popular Pakuranga night market. “As a local candidate in Pakuranga I get no funds from the party at all for the election and have to meet all campaign expenses myself,” he told the Times. He has paid for my own election hoardings and flyers. “When I found out the Pakuranga markets have a policy of having to pay $500 for a candidate to walk through there and meet people, I was frustrated as that is something I could not possibly afford to do,” he said. “I had hoped for (new Labour party leader) Jacinda Ardern to walk through on a visit to the electorate but that could not occur due to cost and also the
fact that National Party had paid for exclusive access on that night she was most available. Kirker believes the practice raises issues with access to information and barriers to democracy. “The National Party can afford to pay the $500 so they are likely to be the only party that will meet local voters at that lively public-type spot. It’s like you can only access the people in certain settings if you pay. He concedes he sent an email to the night market owners with a poorly worded sentence, “which in hindsight could have be construed as a threat, noting that ‘negative media coverage could be coming your way’ “. “I was meaning if people found out about this policy, they might be discontented and that could end up coming to the attention of the media. Neither myself or the Labour Party intended to seek media
attention on this issue,” he said. “I have since apologised to the night market guy about that offending aspect of my email.” However, he remains concerned that Pakuranga Labour is able to visit the night market unless it pays $500. “There are no plans to take this any further.” The NZ Herald reported that market owner Paul de Jonge said the decision to have “exclusive rights” for a single political party to campaign on any given night was because parties that campaigned at the night markets before the last election were “disruptive” to business. The cost to political parties, which is about double that of food stalls, the Herald said, includes a prime double spot with table and chairs, and allnight access for party members to mingle with the market crowd.

Residents quarry battle underway By Marianne Kelly
The Clevedon quarry has operated since 1963.
A
fund-raising campaign has been kicked off by Clevedon residents who are trying to stop expansion of a local quarry. Auckland Council received about 250 submissions of which more than 200 opposed Fulton Hogan’s application for Resource Consent to expand its operation in McNicol Road, previously known as Warren Fowler Quarry. Truck movements would be increased by up to 1300 per cent. The company proposes to increase annual production over several years to two-three million tonnes a year. The quarry has operated since 1963 and is identified in the Auckland Unitary Plan as a significant resource for the Auckland region. It contains a large amount of high quality Greywacke rock which is used as aggregate in the construction industry. Fulton Hogan says Auckland’s demand for aggregate is set to increase significantly. At the same time, supply is slowing as other quarries around the region reach the end of their lifespans. The Clevedon Protection Society is calling for restrictions to truck movements. It’s not seeking to close the quarry but wants Fulton Hogan to urgently reconsider its application. If the proposal is consented by the

council, the society says it will destroy the unique Clevedon amenity and rural lifestyle. It fears the community and environment cannot sustain what is being proposed and the proposal must be substantially reduced so as not to create irreversible environmental and social damage. The society is engaging legal and technical experts to represent it at the hearings either this November or in February. Its public petition currently has close to 1600 signatures and it is conducting a social media and community communication campaign. Fulton Hogan is currently responding to the council’s request for more information. The company wants adverse effects, such as truck noise and vibration, dust and pollution, impact on property valuations and the social impact deemed out
of scope which would prevent submitters presenting evidence on these issues at the consent hearing. Currently the application is considered restricted discretionary which means the council can only control those matters allowed under the Unitary Plan. The application may change to a full discretionary activity which would open Fulton Hogan up to all effects. The society says it would be a small win for the community. At issue, a society spokesman says, is how the quarry expansion does not consider the housing intensification in Clevedon village. Fulton Hogan says its application proposes mitigations including an off-road bridle path for horses and walkers on part of McNicol Road and traffic lights on the single-lane Tourist Road bridge.

Cancer Society needs help this Daffodil Day T
he Cancer Society’s annual flagship event Daffodil Day – one of the most iconic fundraising and cancer awareness events in New Zealand – falls this year on Friday, August 25. Over the years, the Cancer Society has seen progress both preventing and treating cancer, however, more people are still being diagnosed in New Zealand each year, and greater support is needed right across the country. “There are over 22,000 Kiwis getting diagnosed with cancer each year, and it’s slowly increasing” says Daniel Glover, the Cancer Society of New Zealand Communications and Marketing Manager. But there is hope – treatments are getting better, and research is providing results each year. More people are surviving cancer than ever before and this is a direct result of the community’s support to raise funds that are used for research. “When people ask if the money they are donating actually makes a difference, we can say absolutely. But we still have a long way to go, so the research is vitally important. “From research funded by Daffodil Day donations, we are seeing results in new breakthrough immunotherapy drugs and treatments, which are now available both in New Zealand and around the World,” commented Glover. “Research is crucially important, but we also provide a range of support services locally right across the country, including: information, health promotion and education programmes to reduce cancer risk, awareness campaigns and programmes” said Glover. Now in its 27th year, Daffodil Day raises awareness of cancer and is the biggest generator of funds for the Cancer Society. The daffodil is one of the first flowers of the spring season and with its bright yellow bloom represents hope for the one in three New Zealanders affected by cancer each year.
Now in its 27th year, Daffodil Day raises awareness of cancer and is the biggest generator of funds for the Cancer Society. Photos supplied
ANZ has been the principal sponsor of Daffodil Day since the event began. Donations received will go towards vital research into better ways to detect, treat and reduce all types of cancers. They will also fund a range of support services, information booklets and health promotion activities. People wanting to support the Cancer Society can do so by donating directly with a street collector, at any ANZ branch, or online at daffodilday. org.nz.

We shouldn’t build on cliffs We walked across the boardwalk from Half Moon Bay to Buckland’s Beach, and saw this major slip. My brother-in-law is a geological engineer with a Doctorate, and he always said that the geology of New Zealand is too young to ever make building on a cliff a safe option. Mary Pepping
What are our bullying rates? Japan’s youth suicide rate, like ours, is one of the highest in the civilised world. Japanese authorities gathered statistics on a month-to-month basis and discovered the highest numbers occurred always in the weeks that followed children returning from a term break leading to the conclusion that bullying in schools was at the centre and prime reason for youth suicide. For the victims of bullying, the return to school after a break is

extremely traumatic and, in many cases, could lead to suicide. Could it be that by removing bullying in New Zealand schools we could witness a dramatic drop in youth suicide? Certainly, a very good reason for our Minister of Vulnerable Children to see if our suicide rates match Japan’s in the first weeks of a new term in schools and whether NZ schools in which bullying occurs have a higher suicide rate than nonbullying schools. I am blind, or visually impaired to be precise, and walk regularly with a guide dog which I have had for two years. It is my first dog, so I am definitely not an expert at walking with a guide dog but hopefully improving all the time.
I walk in the Meadowlands/ Cockle Bay area in the vicinity of Howick College and surrounding streets. I wear a yellow or orange high visibility vest and the dog’s handle/ harness was red and silver, and (we) have just changed to a flouro yellow one. Every so often I either bump into someone or they bump into me. I don’t know which but it is invariably me that apologises first. Many don’t even respond. It doesn’t particularly worry me for myself, but actually for the other persons. In the days when I could see, I would give a wide berth to an elderly person on a walker, a lady with a pram or pushchair or people with dogs. Now people want to squeeze past you and are surprised when they get bumped. People have said ‘good morning’ to me from a few metres away and still bump me. Only today a lady snarled at me because I didn’t get out of her way. When I told her, ‘I’m actually blind’, she did apologise but didn’t realise I couldn’t see her. It can be difficult to know if someone is coming towards you as a blind person has to rely on their hearing and this is made more difficult with noises such as passing traffic. My main point of this letter is to say maybe people should give other pedestrians, blind or otherwise, a bit more space when out for a stroll. I, for one, won’t feel good if I knock someone else to the ground. Kim Ponse, Cockle Bay

East Auckland Youth Forum visits Parliament By Kelly Teed
A
group of politically-minded students from East Auckland visited Parliament recently. The East Auckland Youth Forum consists of two senior students from each of the schools in the wider area and was set up last year by MP for Botany JamiLee Ross in conjunction with the Youth MPs for Botany and Pakuranga as a way of engaging with young people. Ross said the group – which meets monthly – is a way for him to connect better with young people and a way for them to have access and a relationship with him as their local representative. The group left Auckland first thing in the morning and flew back late that night. Ormiston Senior College student Vaneel Ram described it as “very tiring – very hands-on since the morning”. The 17-year-old said it was interesting to see how the different parties interacted off camera. “You think they’re all enemies but behind closed doors they’ve
got a sense of mutual respect – it’s really intriguing how they can still have a close relationship.” Howick College student Inka Anouk said she was also surprised by the camaraderie among politicians off camera despite the insults slung during question time and in media interviews. She said she enjoyed meeting all the MPs for both parties and seeing how “human” politicians are. “Parliament is really one big family, even though they’re on opposite teams.” The students watched Question Time live and met with a variety of parliamentary staff including Prime Minister Bill English, Speaker of the House David Carter, Minister for Education Nikki Kaye, Associate Minister for Tertiary Education Louise Upston, Leader of the Opposition Jacinda Ardern, Opposition Chief Whip Kris Faafoi and journalist Patrick Gower among others. The trip was 18-year-old Hannah Templar’s second time visiting parliament as part of the group – she also attended last year.

After getting to grips with the small print in the viewshaft documentation and seeking further clarification, there is a message that we must put out. The Plan change is a draft which can be changed back during the consultation period due to pressure by those wanting to develop and intensify and councillors will look at the number of submissions for and against to make the final decision on keeping the Proposed View shaft. We are calling on everyone - all our supporters and those who signed the petition. All of the public who want to see our views preserved are urged to take the two minutes necessary to sign the submission online at http://www.aucklandcouncil. govt.nz/EN/planspoliciesprojects/ plansstrategies/unitaryplan/Pages/ publiclynotifiedonlinesubmissionform3.aspx It is important to support the Plan change. Auckland Council has finally lifted the veil of secrecy they had placed over their decision whether or not to save the views from all around Stockade Hill. Despite the early trumpeting that we the public had won a resounding victory, the reality, alas, is the reverse. We are expected to be grateful that only those who can walk to the very top of Stockade Hill will, in future, get any glimpse at all of the Gulf – because that’s all there will be. Gone will be those breathtaking water and island views spreading before you as you walk or drive around the base of the hill, replaced by an impentrable wall of concrete and brick. It is totally scandalous that the precious views from the approach to this historical village could be destroyed. Would Council have the nerve to do the same to the Auckland War Memorial and Domain? Stockade Hill and its environs are a national treasure and should be treated as such. I hope our Local Board will continue to thump the table and demand justice. form we would suggest adding a note to ask that the viewshaft be extended to cover from the entrance to Howick at Stockade Hill on the western side of Mellons Bay Rd and extending the whole way along the seaward ridgeline to Parkhill Road restoring the original heights under Manukau City Council for the protection of views (not the current heights which means 12 metres high). The Viewshaft as notified allows higher block building from the Howick Christmas tree end of Stockade Hill approaching the top of the rise, then restricts heights beyond this in Mellons Bay Rd. The other concern is that there is no more protection of building height from Crawford Reserve to Parkhill Rd. The old Crawford Reserve viewshaft at street level has been replaced by the new viewshaft from the top of Stockade Hill. Gayleen Mackereth, Howick

We must prevent run-off
Lyn Chapman’s letter is right on the money (Times, August 17). Run-off into our streams and waterways is an unknown time bomb. Silt and other pollution could be the course of the alarming decline in the shellfish population at our local beaches. Cockle Bay, which has its cockles monitored yearly by MPI, has had a decline of over 50 million cockles over the last 5 years. Some of this decline can be attributed to the large number of collectors that are seen there every low tide but I suspect silt and pollution is an added problem. Drastic measures will be needed to halt this decline. You only need to look at the colour of the water after heavy rain to see the effect of this run-off. We all need to do our bit to help prevent run-off from earth works and other pollution entering our streams and waterways and the end of the season for collecting shellfish at Cockle Bay can’t come soon enough. Barry Wood, Cockle Bay
Problem areas
As we come closer to this year’s elections, we need to focus on what caused the massive problems we now have in the country i.e. traffic overload, hospital overload, excessive street parking and housing to name a few. The government now expect the population at large to fix these problems by paying out massive amounts of our money while they have created the problem by non-existent management knowledge and experience. A massive uncontrolled immigration was allowed and encouraged without any anticipatory management skills. No amount of spin from smiling-faced politicians will remove the facts and will only reinforce the evidence of the lack of management knowledge and experience. This of course arises due to the fact that ‘management skills’ at the party selection are not considered within the candidate selection criteria and enforced at people’s democracy at large. If voting for the same candidates continues as it has, we can expect more of the same. I McIntyre, Howick

New curriculum wins MoD funding By Therese Henkin
A
n innovative new curriculum has seen Howick College awarded funding from the Ministry of Education. Howick College’s Innovation Stream has received $80,000 from the Ministry’s Teacher Led Innovation fund which will be used to upskill teachers to continue delivering the new curriculum. The curriculum is designed to make students creative, critical, perceptive and integrated thinkers using future focussed learning, says curriculum leader Angela McCamish. Instead of taking the traditional core subjects of mathematics, science, English and social studies, these subjects are incorporated into new areas of learning, called Innovation Stream courses. These courses still include the

English comes into it when students write reports, critique their own work or analyse articles,” says Ms McCamish. She says the big difference in this curriculum is not what is being taught, but in the way content is applied and assessed. In the traditional science experiment of drop the egg, where students build a contraption to protect the egg from breaking when it is dropped from a significant height, the innovation stream used 3D printers to print their designs of a mars rover to protect the egg during the experiment. McCamish says students will have the ability and knowledge to sit mainstream exams, but will be better developed in six key areas of learning: Character, Citizenship, communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. “This isn’t a class just for the
gifted and talented, this is for students who are passionate and think a bit differently from the rest,” says associate principal Louise Addision. “We want to prepare students to thrive in a world driven by technology, to take initiative, collaborate with others and use a range of expertise to create new things,” she says. This year was the first time running the innovation stream with a year nine class of 28 students. The school is currently taking applications for next year’s innovation stream classes, which will include two year nine classes and one year 10 class. The aim is to eventually adapt the curriculum to provide a level one and level two NCEA curriculums in the coming years, the pair say. Applications for the 2018 Innovation Stream classes close on August 25, 2017.

$150 instant fines for illegal window washers By Therese Henkin Hefty fines will be handed out after new legislation rules window washing illegal. An amendment has been made to the Land Transport Act which says pedestrians who wash or offer to wash a vehicle or part of a vehicle on a road will incur an instant $150 fine unless the vehicle is legally parked. The legislation targets those taking part in unsolicited windscreen washing at intersections. The law change comes after Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross drafted a Bill in September last year to fast track the ban on window washing and grant Police the power to fine them. While it’s rare for parliament to agree to an amendment from an MP who is not a Minister, Ross says it reflects the need for Police to have greater power to tackle window washing and keep the community safe. Police and council have been calling for parliament to help them out with a better law to tackle window washing for some time and Ross is pleased to finally see this happen. “Not every window washer is dangerous or intimidating,” he says. “But police and the council have countless reports of window washers obstructing traffic, forcing their services on people who do not want them, or even attacking members of the public.” Acting Inspector Stephen Richards says that for Police the law change is mostly about preventing harm on the roads and keeping the public safe. “Firstly it is not safe for the window washers, many of them being young people, to be running in and out of traffic. Their safety is important,” he says. “Secondly members of the public

have the right to be safe and feel safe when they are using our roads. The feedback we have had from motorists is that they feel threatened and intimidated when they are approached at an intersection.” Richards is confident the new legislation will see very few repeat offenders. For those who do reoffend, Richards says the police will work with them and if unemployment is an issue they will be pointed in the direction of point them towards agencies and partners of the Police who can support them into other forms of employment. myself and I thought I wouldn’t mind having a go at it – and here we are.” It’s the people he thinks he’ll miss most. “You’ll miss the students [and] you’ll miss the staff. Just mixing with people.” As a student, you don’t often see teachers – let alone principals – for the kind of people they really are. They pile you with homework and assignments and occasionally scold you for being late to class, or an untucked uniform shirt. But what we don’t realise until after we leave school is just how hard they work and how much they genuinely care about and want their students to succeed. As I sat down with Mr Bentley six years after leaving the school - admittedly after I impulsively checked to see if my shirt was tucked in - I saw a whole new side to the man I listened to in assembly nearly every school week for five years. His obvious passion for the entire body of the school – staff, students, senior leadership team and beyond – shines through. He speaks passionately of the achievements of current and former students, which he says is married up to being well supported at home along with “dedicated, high quality staff that the school has always had”. “We’ve tried to keep going for the last 18 years in my time… the aim is to have every student to leave here with a qualification – a ticket to ride – if you like. “It’s got to happen. We’re let-
“G
ood morning school.” It’s a phrase any student or teacher who has passed through Macleans College at some point in the last 18 years will surely recognise. For many, it will be synonymous with former deputy principal Jim Lonergan’s infamous “Roll call please” at the end of each school assembly on a Friday. As a proud Macleans graduate, I have strong memories of the routine assemblies. The school would stand as the principal and head prefects would walk across the stage to be seated where Byron Bentley would deliver the well-known phrase and the school would be seated. But come the end of Term 4, Mr Bentley will cross the stage for the final time. Many of the former – and presumably the current - school community were shocked by the news - and after 18 years in the role, the surprise is understandable. But “it had to happen sometime,” said Mr Bentley, smiling wryly. He’s spent more than 40 years in the education sector – he initially cut his teeth in the role of principal at Western Heights High School in Rotorua for six years before moving to Macleans. ting them down if we don’t do that.” He credits the whanau house system and the vast range of extra-curricular activities available as helping drive the academic success that Macleans has become so well-known for. “It’s a broad term – not everyone has to go onto university – but the vast majority aspire to do that and that’s good. We’ve got other pathways – if you want to become successful in a trade area or a vocational area - call it what you like, it’s all the same to us. “We just want to make sure you get there,” he says. He’s a strong supporter of the music in schools – he says it’s “one of the crown jewels of the school”. Now in its 38th year, the school is no longer young, says Mr Bentley. “When I started here back in 2000, it had two previous excellent principals and I was just hoping to emulate them and keep enhancing the school. “I had to keep enhancing it and that’s been the goal and hopefully that’s been achieved,” he says. “I just hope that the breadth and depth of that achievement can carry on year by year – and there’s no reason why it can’t.” After 18 years of school bells and routines, there’s no concrete plan for what’s next for the education extraordinaire. “[I’ll just] take stock really.” As for that final school assembly? “I’m just going to have to steel myself.”

If you don’t need to move anytime soon - current market prices are largely meaningless to you. roperty Institute of New Zealand chief executive Ashley Church is applauding last week’s decision by Prime Minister Bill English to take debt-to-income ratios off the table as a tool available to the Reserve Bank. Earlier this year the Reserve Bank asked for the Government to give it authority to use debtto-income ratios – a mechanism which would allow the Bank to limit what borrowers could borrow to a multiple of their income – and was in the process of completing a round of consultation before formalising use of the tool. However, at a press conference last week the Prime Minister announced that the Government will not be giving the Reserve Bank authority to use this tool and also said that he saw no further need for extra tools for the Bank. Church says that the decision is ‘fantastic news for kiwis’. “Finally, we’re seeing common
sense prevail. DTIs would have been a draconian addition to an already over-regulated mortgage market and their introduction would effectively have locked first home buyers out of the market. We’ve been a strong vocal opponent of this idea since it was first suggested and have been preparing a submission that was due to be submitted to the Reserve Bank by the end of the week”. Church has also welcomed the Prime Minister’s comments calling on the Reserve Bank to give Kiwis a timeframe for the removal of Loan-to-value rations. Mr English had suggested that the property market has come off the boil and that it was reasonable for people to expect the Reserve Bank to remove these restrictions. “We absolutely agree. The Property Institute has led the charge against these restrictions for the past two years and we’ve been particularly vocal in our
opposition to their imposition on first home buyers who have been squeezed out of the market by them. It’s encouraging to see that at least one political party is waking up to the damage they’re doing and we can only hope that the incoming Reserve Bank Governor will take notice and exercise a more informed approach to the market”. Church says the other political parties now need to declare their hand on LVRs and DTIs prior to the election. “It would be great to see a clear consensus on this matter so that we don’t find ourselves in this position again. Tools like these constitute an artificial constraint on the market and trade short term expediency for long-term solutions”. “They’re not the way to solve our housing problems. The only real solution is to build a lot more houses, and the infrastructure to support them, as quickly as possible”.

t’s not a game one normally associates with the young. So then what are students of an intermediate school doing playing indoor bowls and even excelling at it? Somerville Intermediate School principal David Ellery says retired couple Graham and Nolene Wilson have been visiting the school every week without fail and trained the kids to play indoor bowls. “It’s a sport that you might not associate with children of this age, however they have taken to it like ducks to water,” he smiles. “It’s opened up a different kind of sport to those who perhaps aren’t into the outdoor team games. Mr Ellery says that Graham and Nolene have been doing this for four years now and have developed a wonderful rapport with the youngsters. “It is truly a success story and Graham and Nolene have gone about it in such a quiet and humble manner. “Their voluntary efforts have resulted in both Auckland and National championship wins for the kids. “They are real treasures to the community.” Somerville Intermediate student Niall Vincer, who has been playing

indoor bowls for a year, says that 18 of them have been playing the game competitively. “I think it’s a good sport because it has a degree of luck but also uses strategy, patience and skill.” The 13-year-old, who visits the Howick Club three to four times a week for extra one-on-one coaching sessions says that it also involves a lot of communication and teamwork. He is now doing some serious training for the New Zealand championship coming up next week in Wellington. Niall who also plays rugby, cricket and golf says that it took a little while for it to sink in that he had won the Auckland Junior

it doesn’t preclude anyone on the basis of gender or gait. “It needs more thinking than muscles, and we like to keep the medals coming,” says the 77-yearold who introduced it to students in schools to keep the love for indoor bowls alive. Interestingly, Graham devoting time and energy to train students has initiated other partnerships between the school and community. Seven ladies from the Bruce McLaren Retirement Village have started helping some of the students of Somerville Intermediate with their reading skills, which is turning out to be another mutually rewarding relationship.

Pinetree remains Kiwi immortal ers of my amateur era, he was “the greatest”. While most of today’s fans have switched that honour to Richie McCaw, I cannot separate them and can only speculate just how much better Meads would have been as a full-time professional away from his Te Kuiti farm. Hard, fast and immensely strong, his courage was highlighted when he played in South Africa with a broken arm. A gentleman off the field, he was a ruthless, feared executioner on it who wasn’t above delivering the occasional crunching punch. However he never intentionally put the boot in despite once being ordered off against Scotland. Still, it was amusing seeing him adopt the peace-making role when breaking up skirmishes when in 1971 he captained New Zealand to their historic one and only series loss against the British and irish Lions. In terms of character, strength and skill, Sir Colin, like Everest conqueror Sir Edmond Hillary, will remain a unique Kiwi immortal whose memory will endure. From a humble, hard-working farm boy, he became a national icon.
Agnew’s Angle team-mates. However, with a try and an assist, he had been a major contributor to the Blues’ triumph against the Lions and one suspects his best is still to come. Meanwhile praise for will o’ the wisp fullback Damian McKenzie who celebrated his first test try against an outclassed Australian backline until Kurtley Beale, Israel Folau and super sub Tevita Kuridrani carved through with some scything runs in the second spell. Meads would have applauded the sterling work of All Black locks Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock and appreciated the improvement shown by Joe Moody in what was his finest test. As a bloke who was a loose forward before becoming the world’s greatest lock, he would also have been impressed with the power and pace of No 6 Liam Squire who ably filled the big boots of veteran Jerome Kaino. Farmer “Pinetree” Meads was not much heavier than 100kg in his playing days but, to rugby support-

t was fitting the All Blacks whacked Australia 54-34 in their Sydney Bledisloe Cup rugby test on the eve of Sir Colin Meads’ death. Being a proud New Zealander and one of the game’s true legends, that win would have put a smile on his dial. However that fierce furrowed frown would have emerged in the second half when the Wallabies outscored his favourite team four tries to two. Full credit for the Aussies gritty fight back after trailing 45-6 with a half-hour to play. But it didn’t say a lot for the All Black reserves who, under coach Steve Hansen’s reign, usually make a storming finish. Still that first half was near perfection in amassing six tries through smart execution with Aaron Smith and Beauden Barret combining sweetly, Ryan Crotty running great lines and Rieko Ioane and Ben Smith all class on the wings. Having started by misfiring with two offloads, Sonny Bill Williams recovered to run straight and hard. It hasn’t been an easy year for him, starting late after recovering from the Achilles injury he suffered at the Rio Olympics. And being ordered off in the second test loss against the British and Irish Lions would have hurt his pride knowing it allowed the tourists to draw the series against his disappointed
