H&E routes lost to Go Bus By FARIDA MASTER

here is a simmering of discontent amongst drivers with the reshuffling of bus operators and bus routes in Auckland. The move is likely to see a reduction in hours for some local bus drivers. No jobs are likely to be lost. Auckland Transport is being blamed for a public tendering process where the focus has been on cents and dollars instead of service. A reader called the Times to inform that Howick & Eastern Buses (H & E) has lost the contract with AT to ferry people from East Auckland into the city. Once the present contract ends, some of their buses will not be allowed past Panmure so passengers will have to transfer to other buses or the trains, he said. Rudd Hughes, from First Union

that represents bus drivers, blames the Public Transport Operating Model (PTOM) for a tendering process of bus routes where it is the bus drivers who have to take the ultimate hit in terms of reduced wages. He says H & E Buses have lost the contract of some of the routes to Go Bus Transport, a major operator in Hamilton and now one of the biggest players in the business. “There is a lot of frustration amongst bus drivers who feel they have been exploited,” says Mr Hughes. “This affects quality of service as bus drivers who are entrusted with transporting people to work and back are working extra hours and fatigued which could be dangerous for passengers.” James Ireland, acting media manager for Auckland Transport, clarifies saying: “By the end of 2018 all

Auckland bus routes will be operated under contracts with Auckland Transport, approximately half of which have been subject to a tendering process and the remainder directly negotiated with the existing bus company. “Six local bus routes in the Botany, Howick, Bucklands Beach, Half Moon Bay, Pakuranga, Panmure area will be operated by Go Bus Transport Ltd following the East Auckland tender round. “In the case of East Auckland, the main trunk services along Ti Rakau Drive and Pakuranga Rd were not put out to tender, but will continue to be operated by Howick & Eastern following a contract negotiation process,” he informs. Mr Ireland says that the H & E Buses will also continue to operate all bus services in the Botany,

East Tamaki, Manukau corridor as a result of successfully bidding for two tenders, one of which has been operating since October 2016 (routes 352 and 353 through East Tamaki). “H & E will continue to operate the all-day service from Botany to the City via Ti Rakau Drive, Panmure, Ellerslie and Newmarket, which will operate at least every 15 minutes from early morning until late evening, seven days a week. “They will also continue to operate the Pakuranga Rd service (Botany, Cockle Bay, Howick, and Panmure). This route will continue to the City via the Motorway in peak periods, but off-peak will terminate at Panmure Interchange where customers will be able to transfer to either the Eastern Line train or the Botany to the City double-decker bus route. ➤ Turn to Page 5

ads get to travel through time this Father’s Day with the chance to experience a DeLorean Time Machine from the film Back to the Future. The 1980s DeLorean time machine replica will be at East City Wesleyans annual Father’s Day Blokes and Cars/ Bikes event this Sunday. East Auckland resident Mat Bedogni spent more than 1400 hours modifying the DeLorean to look like the one used by Doc and Marty McFly in the film. Bedgoni says he even received guidance from the directors of the 1985 film to ensure the car looked as close to the original as possible. The car enthusiast says everything from the colour of the wires to the placement of the screws is copied from the original, making it almost an exact replica.

“Being a young kid in the 80s it was the number one movie car and I think it still is. I always wanted a DeLorean, but it took about five or six years before I felt confident I could turn it

“I had a DeLorean filmmaker come to New Zealand and he was visiting all of the DeLorean car owners in the country,” Bedgoni says. “He has seen a lot of the DeLorean’s around the world for his film, but when he saw this car he said he’s never seen a replica movie car as accurate as this one. He reckons it must be in the top three most accurate in the world.” Bedogni says he loves being able to share the car with the community and see the joy it brings to other people. For $10 event-goers can get their photo taken in the DeLorean and receive a time travel certificate. There will also be a range of cars and bikes on display at the Father’s Day event, a free barbeque and drinks and a fire truck and an educational display by fire and emergency services. The event is free for community members of all ages.

Late note for dads to bosses Dads, uncles and big brothers get together at the Father’s Day celebration at Pigeon Mountain School to celebrate their role in the students’ lives and say a huge thank you to them. This year the event is being held on Friday, September1. The special blokes’ breakfast held

at the school is a well attended event and a feel-good morning. This year Principal Ian Dickinson has published a special note for the dads to take to work to give to their bosses to get the first part of the day off to attend! It says: ‘Dear Boss-I’ll be late in to work on Friday September1...

orking full time and having a three-monthold daughter would be enough to keep most people fairly busy. Throw in a bit of General Election campaigning for a highlycontested electorate and you start to wonder how Guy Hunt is still functioning as a normal person. If that wasn’t enough, he also plays golf, competes in IronMan triathlons and brews his own beer. Hunt is standing for the Green Party in the Pakuranga electorate – a safe National seat that’s been comfortably held by Maurice Williamson since 1987 – until now. Williamson announced last year that he would not stand for re-election in the 2017 General Election, instead accepting a diplomatic posting in Los Angeles. With Williamson out of the picture for the first time in decades, could it be time for a change of party in the seat? Hunt thinks so. “I think there is [a mood for change].Going out and talking to voters, there is a mood for green change. “People are aware there are water issues, climate issues, social issues and I feel like the National Party are not quite dealing with those at [the right] pace. “Maurice was there about 30 years [and now] Simeon [Brown] has come along, he’s still quite

young and new to the game and from talking to voters there is that mood for change – they are open to these new ideas.” Hunt – an accountant by trade – became involved with local politics after returning from London towards the end of 2015 and thinking he “could add some value”. He works as a Financial Controller for Bed Bath and Beyond at head office and says politics and business aren’t all that far apart. “I’m a business person and most businesses are operated on a sustainable approach; that’s where you’re looking at the three legs of a tripod – environment, social issues and economic issues. “You need to be profitable, you need to ensure people in your business are getting the right support and everything they need and you’re looking after the environment.” He says it’s simply a matter of taking those basic principles to a

government scale. “We need to make sure we’re doing it that way because at the moment I feel like we’re not doing it in a sustainable way.” It’s about the big picture, he says. “You can work in business and affect that one business you’re working in – or if you’re a consultant you might go out to a few businesses – but that’s still those few businesses. “We need to be doing things on a much faster, grander scale than we’re currently doing it and if you’re doing it company by company, it’s tough.” He said he put up his hand to try and get into Government to tackle issues such as climate change “in real time rather than deferring it 30 years down the track. “That’s the reason I got involved – I wanted to be involved that change and making New Zealand the clean, green 100 per cent pure image that we sell ourselves for.”

General Elections 2017 Election Day: Saturday, September 23

Meet the candidates

Welcome to part four of the Times’ General Election coverage. We have continued to run more detailed profiles of those pushing for your votes (visit www.times.co.nz under the News banner). Numerous groups are hosting election meetings featuring various candidates. The Times will be attending two – both of which will feature candidates for the major parties. The first public meeting we are attending will be the Pakuranga Electorate Meet-the Candidates meeting on Monday September 4 at St Mark’s Catholic Church, 334 Pakuranga Road at 7:30pm. St Mark’s has confirmed the candidates Simeon Brown, National; Barry Kirker, Labour; Carrie StoddartSmith, Maori; Guy Hunt, Greens and Suzanne Kelly, NZ First (meeting details, phone Rev Chris Sullivan 576 2888). The Times will also be attending the Botany Electorate Meet-theCandidates event on September 11 at 7.30pm at the East City Wesleyan Church Centre at 219 Burswood Drive, Botany. This meeting will feature Julie Zhu, Greens; Tofik Mamedov, Labour; JamiLee Ross, National and Jenny Marcroft, a NZ First representative. It will be hosted by Rev Dr Richard Waugh with Lloyd Wong as facilitator. (Phone 273-9044 for information). ■ If you have questions for the candidates you’d like answered, email editor@times.co.nz.

Bus routes change ➤ From Page 1 “Although off-peak services (the middle of the day including weekends) along Pakuranga Rd will no longer run all the way to the City, they will operate twice as frequently as the current services – at least every 15 minutes instead of generally every 30 minutes. Full details of the East Auckland New Network will be communicated to bus customers and households before the go-live date, starting with updated information on the Auckland Transport website.

Consultation

The East Auckland New Network, which will change all bus routes east of the Tamaki River, was announced by Auckland Transport in June

2016 following public consultation in late 2015. Q & A with Sheryll Otway, CEO Howick and Eastern Buses Does renegotiation of the contract with AT mean that H& E Buses have lost some of the routes to Go Bus? These routes were tendered and in any tender process there is the likelihood of change. Is it true that six bus routes that originally belonged to the iconic H & E buses in the area will soon be operated by Go Bus? We have certainly lost some iconic routes which are very disappointing Will this affect the H & E bus service to the city? The tendering process does

not affect the service delivery of any other routes. Will Express buses at peak time still be operating as usual? Everything stays the same, but as we are all aware things are always subject to change. Does the transfer of routes to Go Bus translate into less work for H & E drivers and less wages? Less work - well we have lost work, but drivers work under a 40 hour a week contract and that will not change. Are you required to have buses painted in the AT colours and is the cost to be borne by the H & E Buses? Yes all buses must be painted to run within the new PTOM environment and vehicle specs are specific to the contract.

Meet our newest reporter Therese Henkin (pictured) joined the Times last month. She comes with a background in magazine journalism. Previously Therese worked at Bauer Media having graduated with a Bachelor of Communication Studies majoring in Journalism in 2015. She is now ready

to take on the challenge of weekly deadlines, daily online reporting and community news. As a Howick local, Therese has always been interested in listening to and sharing the stories of those in the area, celebrating their successes and giving them a platform to push for change.

Outside of work Therese enjoys photography, travel, brunch dates and dressing her pug in a tutu. She hopes to one day learn to love coffee, so she never has to order a hot chocolate in front of a politician again. SIMEON BROWN NATIONAL PARTY CANDIDATE FOR PAKURANGA

I’m Simeon Brown, your National Party candidate for Pakuranga. I’m passionate about East Auckland and am seeking your support to represent these fantastic suburbs in Parliament. With a background in commercial banking and local politics, I have experience working for constituents and delivering results, and I will bring that same energy and commitment to the people who live here. Standing as the National Party candidate for Pakuranga, I have a clear set of priorities: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Smarter transport solutions that don’t punish motorists. More police and increased community safety. Supporting Pakuranga families and businesses. Continued improvements in educational achievement. Well-resourced local health services.

I would be honoured to be Pakuranga’s next local voice in Parliament.

News bites Correction Howick College’s new Innovation Stream has been awarded funding from the Ministry of Education (MoE), not the MoD. The error was made in editing. The funding will be used to upskill teachers in delivering the new curriculum.

School fundraiser Howick College’s MacDonald House committee held a fundraiser recently to support Ronald McDonald House Charity. The market day raised over $1000, with henna tattooing, food stalls, a photo booth and a ‘dunk the teacher’ stall on display.

Andrew Norton, a senior minister at St Columba Church, is having chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer at the moment. A keen photographer and poet, the church will host an exhibition called Soulscapes of his works next month. All the proceeds will be going to the Cancer Society and Dove House Hospice. Viewings are from Monday to Friday from 9am-3pm and Sunday mornings from September 3 to September 29 at St Columba Cafe, 480 Ti Rakau Drive. Soulscapes is an exhibition of landscape photography and poetry reflecting on Andrew’s journey of change, transition, surgery for pancreatic cancer and subsequent chemotherapy. Japanese students learn cricket By FARIDA MASTER

W

ith Twenty20 cricket having a worldwide fan following, it is little wonder that Japanese students want to learn more about New Zealand’s most popular summer sport from the Kiwis themselves. In a specially arranged session by Neville Nair, teacher in charge of cricket at Pakuranga Intermediate, held at the Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club, around 18 visiting Japanese exchange students were learning batting, catching and bowling skills for the first time. Mr Nair says that while baseball is a very popular sport in Japan, it is not difficult to transfer the skills from baseball to cricket. Seishi Takahashi, the coordinator

who brings the exchange students to Pakuranga Intermediate every alternate year, says it is a novel experience for the students. Twelve-year-old Noah Scordino from Pakuranga Intermediate says that last year when he visited Japan, he went to the same school as the Japanese students in the city of Sunmi. “I think Keita Suzuki who is an ace at baseball is doing rather well in picking up cricket,” he says. Francis Scordino, who is on the board of trustees at Pakuranga Intermediate, says there is an interest in cricket being added to the sporting options of school students in Japan. “As I understand it, there has been discussion at New Zealand national level regarding this, and given that

Japanese students were visiting the school, it seemed a perfect opportunity for them to have a go and then provide feedback in Japan.” Also training the students to play cricket is Danru Ferns, who is the Howick and Pakuranga Cricket Club’s cricket development officer. Part of his role is to work closely with the junior section of the club in providing coaching and training. The club has a new strategic plan which includes working closely with all local schools in the region, and offering them cricket coaching and tournament opportunities. Phil Gifford aka ‘Loosehead Len’, renowned sportswriter and broadcaster recently published a book “Looking after your Nuts And Bolts”. It highlights men’s health issues and aims to break down barriers that Kiwi blokes may face when it comes to awareness of ailments as we age. Phil suggests, “Instead of guys saying ‘what if I am diagnosed with something’, what they should be saying is ‘I’m going to get checked by an expert to be given the all clear so I can continue enjoying life. ment introduced a maximum duration of three years for lower skilled Essential Skills visa-holders. The change applies to those earning less than $41,538 a year and after the three years migrants would need to spend 12 months outside of New Zealand before they were eligible for another visa to work in another lower-skilled role. Woodhouse says the changes will also help strike the right balance between ensuring Kiwis are at the front of the queue for jobs and making sure employers have access to temporary migrant workers where there are shortages to sustain economic growth. He says it also ensures lower-

skilled migrants were clear about their future prospects in New Zealand. “It had been worrying me that people had been here a very long time for no pathway to residency,” Woodhouse says. “Being honest with them and being very clear with them on the prospects that they have for staying permanently when they do arrive is very important.” Woodhouse says we are fortunate, because these problems are the positive challenges of growth. “I’d much rather have that than the challenges of trying to stem the tide of New Zealanders flying offshore and a flaccid economy, because we certainly don’t have that.”

hile party hoardings are no surprise close to a general election, it’s not often you see New Zealand’s Immigration Minister as a human billboard. Michael Woodhouse took to the streets to campaign alongside Simeon Brown last Wednesday evening before taking on the role of quiz master at National’s annual Pakuranga Electorate quiz night. “I love human hoardings, its great fun. Although, I don’t usually do it in a suit,” he laughs. The Dunedin local says whether he’s campaigning on the streets or ensuring high quality migrants are filling skill shortages, he considers himself lucky to be in a position to help grow a strong economy and labour force for New Zealand. He says recent changes to temporary work visa conditions for migrants reflects that far more people want to stay in New Zealand permanently than the residents programme has the capacity to respond to. rog Puddles Child Care Centre, responsible for looking after hundreds of local kids around the Bucklands Beach and Half Moon Bay areas over the years, has changed hands. Jo Clarke, of Botany, has sold the business after 15-and-a-half years and finished up at the centre in Dianne-Louise Dr, Half Moon Bay, on August 4. “Gosh, I was looking at enrolments...we have had about 500 or so children over the 15 years I would say,” said Jo. “It certainly was a massive move, as Froggies was a huge part of my life for over 15 years. “I worked lots in the evening and was also so busy juggling work, my boys and all their after school activities as well as being heavily involved

in rugby, so I was always really busy,” she said. “I just really wanted to slow down, be less stressed and be a better mum for my boys. “The hardest part for me to walk away from is the wonderful team of teachers I currently work with; they are all fantastic and all have something special about them which makes Froggies such a fabulous place. Long-time staff members Tina Packwood and Moira Bridgeman are staying on at Frog Puddles. The new owner is a fully qualified teacher (privately owned) with more than 10 years experience in the industry. They, Kavita and Sandeep Bhatia, are committed to offering quality childcare for the local community.

Tackling youth offending head-on As this is my final column preelection, can I say thank you to the Botany Electorate for the opportunity to be your MP for the past six years. Crime rates have been trending down in recent years, mostly due to the excellent work NZ Police do in the community. A lot of emphasis has been placed on working with young people, and we have seen a 31 per cent reduction in youth crime reduce since June 2011. However, we want to do more to target the small group of young people who commit large numbers of violent and serious offences – such as aggravated

assault, aggravated robbery, and rape. If National is re-elected, we will fund a $60 million package over four years to target our most serious young offenders and help them to lead better lives. We will be creating a new Young Serious Offenders (YSOs) category for the approximately 150 hardened young offenders which will establish a year-long defence-led Junior Training Academy. The YSO will provide wraparound service for YSOs including support to address problems like addiction, mental health, or other drug issues, as well as support-

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, August 31, 2017 — 11

ing them through the curriculum good literacy and numeracy skills. The training will also focus on activity, and development of discipline and character. YSOs who fail to complete their time at the Academy will be sent back to serve an adult prison sentence instead. Other policies to target YSOs include tightening bail requirements, increasing the use of electronic monitoring, and removing the ability to be released early from any youth justice custodial sentences. We also have to understand that most YSOs often have few good role models and have the

ami-Lee Ross MP for Botany freedom to commit serious crimes. This is why National plans to hold negligent parents to account. Parents will be required to attend parenting education programmes, and ensure that breaches of parental orders are recorded on a parent’s record. We will be implementing instant fines for parents who have kids under the age of 14 wandering around the streets between 12am and 5am.

Night of glamour awaits at Uxbridge By KELLY TEED Jennifer Ward-Lealand could be referred to as Auckland theatre royalty. She’s been in the business for a number of years and has performed in plays such as The Book of Everything, Poor Boy and Osage County. On Saturday September 9, she’s bringing her unforgettable stage presence to Uxbridge Arts & Culture – a cabaret called ‘Falling in Love Again’. Jennifer says the cabaret was born after she played actress and singer Marlene Dietrich in a play. After spending six months researching her, Jennifer “couldn’t bear to let her go”. Audiences can expect an “incredibly glamorous night”, says Jennifer, with a repertoire of 17 Marlene Dietrich songs to perform. “It’s really, really beautiful,” Jennifer says of the show. “People get an immense amount of pleasure from the show [and] there’s nothing nicer than the smile spread across people’s faces when they hear a song that particularly resonates with them.” Dust off your glitziest evening gown and head down to Uxbridge Arts & Culture on Saturday September 9 for an unforgettable evening of glamour. ■ Tickets are available from Uxbridge Arts & Culture on (09) 535 6467.

ocal primary students recently got down and dirty planting young native flaxes and trees as part of the Trees for Survival initiative. Under the Trees for Survival NZ wide project, the children of Bucklands Beach Primary School have nurtured seedlings in their growing facility at the school and finally the big day arrived when the seedlings were ready for plant out. Armed with gumboots, parkas and gloves, the students, along with several parent helpers, teacher Jacinta Howie, Trees for Survival facilitator Eve Clarke and Half Moon Bay Rotary helpers Irena Giles and Terry Daniell travelled to Waiau Pa where

during a long morning stint they planted out some 800 young plants to stabilise the land. The site had been well cleared from gorse, hawthorn, woolly nightshade and other nasties and the soil was ideal for planting - soft rich and full of worms! Trees for Survival is an environmental education programme which involves young people growing and planting native trees. The programme creates community partnerships by engaging schools, their community, local businesses and councils all working together to restore our natural heritage. The aim of the programme is to grow native seedlings to plant on unstable

Success for HPHC Howick Pakuranga Hockey Club has wrapped up a strong season with both the Premier Women and Premier Men teams making it into their respective finals. Premier Women finished their season on a high with a fantastic 2-1 victory over arch rivals Somerville. Both teams had their Black sticks playing so the crowd was entertained to a very high caliber game of hockey. Howick shot into the lead early in the 1st half through a fine field goal from Black Stick striker Deanna Ritchie.

The second goal was scored by midfielder Lydia Velzian, off a brilliant counter attack initiated by Anita McLaren, who was outstanding. Somerville fought hard in the second half and pulled a goal back off a penalty conversion by Phoebe Steele. Somerville launched an all out attack in the last 5 minutes replacing their goal keeper with an extra field player, but Howick’s goal keeper made some brilliant saves to ensure the win for Howick Pakuranga. Auckland Council stopped kerbside inorganic collections in 2015 and introduced a new collection system (booking first), however, the property owner got $22.77(collection fee) refund if they didn’t want this service. We got refunds for 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 rating years which we think is quite reasonable - you use it, you pay it; you don’t, you get a refund. The collection fee is already charged with our rates. We think it’s also a good way to save our landfill. This year, however, when we looked at our rates invoice we found there’s no refund. We didn’t use the service last year! So we complained this to the council. And last week (a person) from council rang us saying there’s no more refunds, even if you don’t use this service. We’re sure thousands of home owners will have the same thinking as us (once they realise) such an unfair change!

New start for east Auckland AFL By Alex Braae, AUT Journalism Student

will be to turn the raw new recruits into footy players. “A game plan for our team is crucial. Obviously our team got spanked a lot last year,” he said. He noted the numbers at a midweek training a few weeks out from the opening match meant that the Hornets would be able to put out a full team and reserves bench, with spare players as injury cover. Given the size of AFL fields, fresh legs can make all the difference. Senior player Ryan White said he was looking forward to seeing rugby league players from the Hornets get involved with AFL. “They’ve got a very big community behind them. They’ve put the feelers out on their Facebook page and other ways they engage with

ith a new coach, a new name and new kit, an east Auckland AFL club is also looking for a new start. The Aussie Rules team formerly known as the Pakuranga Panthers have cut ties with the Pakuranga Rugby Club, and are now affiliated to the Howick Hornets Rugby League club instead. The Panthers have barely won a match since 2014, and have often struggled to get a full team on the field. However, with the 2017 Auckland AFL season about to get underway, numbers and enthusiasm are up for the newly formed Howick Hornets. New coach Andrew Azzopardi, who recently arrived from Melbourne, says his biggest challenge Howick Hornets on attack at the Preliminary Final last Saturday against Pt Chevalier Pirates. Times photo Wayne Martin

Hornets slip behind Pt Chev The Howick Hornets fought hard against the Pt Chevalier Pirates at the Trusts Arena in Saturday’s Fox Memorial Preliminary Final but ultimately failed to secure the win, going down 26-24. The Hornets were first to put points on the board with standoff Drew Radich touching down to score before converting his own for an early 6-0 lead. There were further tries to Jesse Keven, Nicolas Wilson and Longo Fotofili with conversions (3 in total) and a penalty goal to Drew Radich. The Hornets were only five minutes away from advancing through to this year’s grand final with the score at 24-22, but they lost their hold on to the battle when a pass was seized upon and Pt Chevalier ran in a 90 metre try to get them ahead and clinch the game. It was an unfortunate end to an extremely successful year for the Howick Hornets with new coach Shaun Clark elevating the team into the top three of the Fox Memorial competition. This high performance is also reflected at the Howick Premier 1st’s level who are in their divisions Grand Final this Friday night against Pt Chevalier. Another highlight to the Hornet’s season was the Under 12-13s Restricted team being crowned Auckland Champions.

their players and fans.” So far only two league players from the club have given AFL a go, but Azzopardi is confident more will join once the league season finishes. Howick Hornets official Denie Allen, who played a leading role in bringing the AFL team to the club, said Pakuranga had long been a rugby stronghold, and smaller codes needed to stick together. “I know that we’re able to offer a more unique situation for them that’ll mean they won’t be shoved in the corner and ignored. “That’s one thing, with us being on board with them, we’ll be able to provide club facilities and grounds so that they can be front and centre.”

Kaur brings European flavour to school

Farm Cove chef Jasbir Kaur has worked with the best in the world.

rience – we worked 16-hour days, and everyone only spoke Catalan, so I had to learn the language quick! “Each of the 29 dishes served had so many different elements, and in some cases, up to 10 chefs were needed just to put one plate together.” Amongst Jasbir’s favourites were the gazpacho sandwich, olives with mandarin essence, and a dessert which featured pistachios 32 different ways. “Every plate at Disfrutar is big on drama, and taps into all

the senses. For example, before eating one of the desserts, diners have to wash their hands in whiskey!” Jasbir will now pass on some of Disfrutar’s creative culinary concepts to wannabe chefs in Manukau, in her new role as general manager of tertiary education provider Ignite Colleges. Currently Ignite delivers hospitality training along with a range of other employmentfocussed programmes, and $1.5 million is currently being invested into the campus to set

up a state-of-the-art cookery school which opens in October. From its cutting edge commercial training kitchens, Ignite Colleges will dish up an exciting and unique range of culinary arts programmes, specifically designed by Jasbir. Courses will include some of the revolutionary ideas she picked up during her time at Disfrutar. “I want to bring about change in culinary arts in New Zealand, and add some real flair to cookery training.” It’s a task she’s well qualified for, having previously opened two successful cooking schools. She’s also been a regular chef on TV, has presented radio shows both here and overseas, and for the past eight years she has judged New Zealand’s top national culinary arts competitions. “I want to help New Zealand become more of a culinary destination, by training chefs who will push boundaries, innovate and inspire. By taking up the reins at Ignite Colleges, I have the opportunity to do exactly that, in the very heart of Manukau.”

29-course dinner is probably more than most could stomach. But for die-hard foodies, the opportunity to dine at Disfrutar, one of the world’s top restaurants, is well worth making an exception for. Renowned for serving the ultimate degustation feasts, Disfrutar is the brainchild of chefs from the globally acclaimed elBuili, and since opening its doors in 2014 has been showered with accolades, from Michelin Stars to Repsol Suns to Restaurant of the Year titles. Farm Cove local chef Jasbir Kaur has just returned from a three-and-a-half-month stint in the Disfrutar kitchens, where she worked with the best chefs on the planet, and discovered first hand why this Barcelona restaurant is booked out a year ahead. “Every top chef in the world has worked at Disfrutar or ElBuli at some point in their careers, so it has always been a dream of mine,” says Jasbir, who has 20 years of cheffing experience under her belt, here and in the USA. “It was a very intense expe-

ABs have fullbacks galore W

ith the injured Jordie Barrett out for the season and Ben Smith taking his sabbatical, one would think the All Blacks face a fullback crisis. Not so, when you consider Damian McKenzie, Israel Dagg and Beauden Barrett are all capable of filling the breech with aplomb. True, little McKenzie takes risks seldom tolerated at rugby test match level, but for each try he costs, he is likely to create many more. However, was McKenzie’s reckless pass that gifted Israel Folau an early long-range intercept try in Sunday’s 35-29 Dunedin thriller against Australia. While his helter-skelter daredevil antics bring rich rewards for

the Chiefs at Super Rugby level, at test level the All Black selectors probably believe boldness will not always be his friend if he’s AWOL at the back. Presumably that’s why they believe first-five is his best position. But as Aaron Cruden learned during Dan Carter’s reign, earning the right to wear the No 10 jersey is just as difficult now that Barrett has become the Cantabrian’s successor. McKenzie and Lima Sopoaga’s best chance of getting a start at first-five in this year’s Rugby Championship would be if Beauden Barrett starts at fullback, leaving Israel Dagg and Waisake Naholo as the best right wing options. However Dagg also remains a very good fullback, as does fellow

Crusader David Havili. With Australia giving the All Blacks a serious scare before Barrett’s second try sealed a nail-biting 35-29 win at Dunedin, it was skipper Kieran Read who stayed cool in the heat of battle. It was he who called Lima Sopoaga for the short kick-off which he won. And it was he who made a vital break leading to Barrett’s winning try. But full marks for the Wallabies for taking the All Blacks to the wire despite the dismal record of their Super 12 teams. They do have courage as well as a classy passing and running game. And it was good to see Will Genia, Kurtley Beale and Folau back to their best. Unfortunately, All Black Sonny Bill Williams was not and

made too many errors in conceding possession. On the bright side, left wing Rieko Ioane, prop Nepo Laulala and blindside flanker Liam Squire have all taken their chance superbly. While criticism has been levelled at the team for not maintaining the high standard of last year, not enough credit has been given to the outstanding defence of the Australians and British and Irish Lions in cramping their space. With the Black Ferns claiming the women’s rugby World Cup in Belfast last Sunday, New Zealand confirmed it is indeed the greatest rugby playing nation on earth. That win follows the success of the All Blacks in defending the men’s crown in 2015 and the Under

Agnew’s Angle 20 men comprehensively winning their world trophy earlier this year. The foundation for the Black Ferns’ 41-32 win over a strong England side was a strong forwards performance led by veteran captain Fiao’o Fa’amausili, with big prop Toka Natua scoring three of the team’s seven tries and lithe fullback Selica Winiata notching two. With little ball going her way, brilliant left wing Portia Woodman failed to add to the remarkable 13 she had scored earlier in the tournament. However she remains an absolute superstar, on par with the best of her All Black male counterparts. ■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author

Work on new Whitford subdivision underway A new development in Whitford has already sold more than half of its available sites. Whitford Manor Estate, on the corner of Whitford Park Road and Saleyard Road, is next to the Whitford Park Golf Club. Prices for the stand alone sites range from $685,000 to $970,000 - 25 have been already been sold. Barfoot & Thompson’s Marylin Van Wagoner said the subdivision offers a number of firsts for New Zealand including its own sewerage plant and bore water on site which will be treated via a water treatment plant. It will replenish independent water catchment at each site. All water tanks will be underground. Earthworks are rumbling along on the new subdivision. Mrs Van Wagoner said it will have mixed model housing featuring

Auckland Council requires that the subdivision reflects the historic nature of the area. Each individual site sale includes an initial concept plan tailored to the owners. St Kents nail 1st XV final

S

aint Kentigern College has won the Auckland Rugby Secondary Schools 1A Competition final in thrilling fashion beating Sacred Heart 26-19 at Eden Park on Saturday. It is the college’s fifth championship in seven years – the other years being 2015, 2013, 2012, 2011. The teams played in front of a crowd of around 8000. Sacred Heart had the advantage in the opening 35 minutes however a resurgent St Kents dominated wthe second half to take home the prize. The final produced an exceptional rugby contest between two very determined sides. Sacred Heart, playing with the advantage of a healthy breeze out of the north eastern corner, used their forward strength to stun Saint Kentigern with a 19-6 lead at half time. Saint Kentigern had a couple of chances in the first half but they were starved of the ball and spent much of the first half on defence. The wind made it difficult to play at the right end of the field. After half-time, with the change of ends, Saint Kentigern enjoyed much more possession and scored some exceptional tries. Mitch Gibson played a real captain’s game, scoring a try and tackling ferociously. Both Lui Sholtens and Benji Pauga scored magnificent
