As winners they join the likes of Bic Runga, Opshop, Ladyhawke, The Broods, Anika Moa, Brooke Fraser and many more successful Kiwi musicians, who have won the competition before them.

Band members Sabastian Munro, Logan Anderson and Mark Tohovaka say they are shocked and humbled by their win.

The Rockquest is the largest and most well-known music competition in the country and one of the largest cultural competitions for NZ secondary schools involving about 800 students from over 300 secondary schools. The boys walked away with $10,000 of musical equipment from the Rockshop and an $8000 recording and video grant from NZ On Air plus other prizes.

While the boys haven’t decided how they will use their prize money, they feel very privileged and say the new equipment will be help set them up for a future in the music industry.

The win will also help them gain valuable exposure, they say.

They will also spend a year with a mentor from the music industry to guide them through the next phase of their career.

Howick College’s head of music Mr O’Ryan and principal Iva Ropati were both present at the finals to see the boys perform and take the win.

This was the first time Howick College has had a band in the national finals.

hat do you call a line of politicians struggling with the Maori part of our anthem?

Nervous. I won’t name names. It’s not gracious.

Some struggled. I struggled. We’re all human.

Especially before God. I don’t know the belief systems of any of the candidates. That’s fine.

But the pressure was on from kick-off. There was an opening prayer.

Then the anthem. Then delivery of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops’ 2017 Election Statement, the opening of which read thusly: “We hope for positive, pro-life attitudes and policies.

Love and care for the unborn, the vulnerable, the disabled, the elderly and the different, are marks of a compassionate society, as are wellfunded palliative care services. Legalisation of assisted suicide undermines trust in the medical profession and puts vulnerable groups in our society at risk.”

Everyone seemed in agreement that this all made perfect sense.

And just when the candidates thought they may not have to get up and face the music after all, a speaker came forth and gave unto them this curly question: “Where do you stand on legalising Euthanasia and Decriminalising Abortion?”

Your time starts now. Rev Chris Sullivan welcomed the five candidates to Monday night’s election meeting at St Mark’s Catholic Church, Pakuranga. Crowd? More than 100, fewer than 200.

Those fighting for the Pakuranga seat vacated by long-time MP Maurice Williamson are Simeon Brown (National), Barry Kirker (Labour), Suzanne Kelly (NZ First), Carrie Stoddart-Smith (Maori) and Guy Hunt (Greens), were under the pump. The time master was strict. Very strict.

which cannot be decided by MPs in Parliament” but by binding referendum.

Brown agreed both issues were conscience issues “which means that each MP must decide”. And, straight off the song sheet his leader Bill English used in the Leaders’ Debate on Newshub on the same night, Brown said he didn’t see the need to decriminalise abortion as the regulations had been in place since the 1970s.

He had a number of concerns however with assisted suicide and was open to the views of the electorate.

Hunt came out flying and, like the Labour leader Jacinda Ardern on Monday night, emphasised abortion should not fall under Crimes Act legislation. With medically-assisted death, he would support a law change provided a number of safeguards were in place.

Kirker said Labour was going to refer the abortion legislation to the Law Commission for review. “Personally I don’t need a change to the law.”

No to euthanasia too. “The Bill before parliament now, I

would be voting against it.”

MPs will be forced to vote on whether or not euthanasia should be legal, after the End of Life Choice bill from by ACT leader David Seymour was drawn from Parliament’s ballot in June.

Stoddart-Smith doesn’t believe it’s a matter for politicians. “My conscience vote will be the vote of the Pakuranga electorate.”

And she was adamant the inclusion of the abortion law under the Crimes Act was a violation of human rights.

And they fielded loads more questions.

“What will you do to make sure everyone has a decent standard of living, that workers receive decent wages (at least the Living Wage), that beneficiaries receive enough, and that everyone has decent warm, dry and affordable housing?” (Two minutes each) Stoddart-Smith talked of the living wage, a new category of social housing, cost of living adjustments on benefits, a universal student allowance, more funding for emergency

Kelly: “Bridging the gap between rich and poor; providing government assistance for first home buyers...(we) also want to provide a minimum wage of $20 in the next three years.”

The Super Gold card would give seniors three free doctor’s visits a year and 10 per cent off electricity bills,” she said.

Brown: “The National party believes that the best way to lift people out of poverty is a strong economy and (strong) education (policies).”

Hunt: “No one should live in poverty.” The Greens would increase all benefits by 20 per cent including Working for Families and would raise the minimum wage to $17.50ph and keep raising it. They would also lower tax rates. “Everyone earning under $150,000 would be better off under Green policy.”

Kirker: “We’d immediately increase the minimum wage to $16.50...and then $17.25.”

Labour would make a winter energy payment. Re housing, the party would tackle speculators in a bid to slow down the market and they would assist tenants.

Creditable performances from all of them really.

ed tape is strangling business and growth and needs a massive shake-up, according to Anthony Smith, the ACT Party candidate for Hunua “Businesses at all stages get overregulated slowing down or stopping their potential for growth in New Zealand,” he said.

“We would reform the Resource Management Act which is the biggest brick wall in the way on New Zealand business. Also we would look at reforming any form of loopy regulation.”

Housing presented a range of problems.

“The cost of housing is unacceptably high especially in Auckland where we also have a significant housing shortage,” said Smith, 27, who loves travel, arguing politics and spending time with family.

“The high cost of housing is pushing costs onto tax payers as the Government increases spending on emergency housing.”

He suggested tools such as income-related rent subsidies and accommodation supplements could help those struggling to get into affordable accommodation. “(We need to) incentivise councils to consent more land for development and build more infrastructure, by sharing a portion of GST collected from construction,” he said.

How to vote

If you have an EasyVote card, take it with you when you go to vote and give it to the person issuing your voting paper. It will help them find you on the electoral roll.

land’s schooling system “which so far have been very successful”. “(We would) also allow for state and integrated schools to voluntarily apply for partnership school status, giving those schools who want it the same flexibilities enjoyed by partnership schools. “(We would) increase the government funding of independent schools. ACT will remove the funding cap and will increase the per-student funding – independent schools would receive 50 per cent of that of a state school student.”

Reeves wants new school at Beachlands J

on Reeves, the NZ First list candidate in Hunua, would re-open all the rural police stations closed in New Zealand in the past year and buy land for a high school in Beachlands.

Reeves, 45, is going up against incumbent Andrew Bayly (National) and wants voters to give NZ First their party vote to ensure he gets in on the list.

“For the first time Hunua electorate will have two MPs. Competition is good and I believe having both myself and a local electorate MP can only mean more attention will be given to the region by Central Government,” he said.

“It will also mean if you have an issue and feel the local electorate MP has not helped resolve it, you will be able to contact me, as your New Zealand First List MP based in Hunua electorate.

“That is why it is very important you party vote New Zealand First this election.”

He feels the major issues are mass open-door immigration and housing; Auckland Council and Auckland Transport; a secondary school for Beachlands and crime.

“New Zealand First demand

1800 extra police on the beat within three years. This is catchup to pay for the freeze and cuts made to the police by the National Government,” said Reeves.

“NZ First will ensure all rural police stations are no longer single-staffed. We will reopen the 41 rural police stations National has closed down in the past year.

Whitford/Beachlands will have additional staffing resources allocated.”

Reeves, the co-owner of an advertising company and an account manager for a media company, was the co-ordinator and co-founder of the Public Transport Users Association and committee member of the Campaign for Better Transport. He is lobbying for better transport and investment in public transport.

“Ironically, last year Mayor Phil Goff campaigned on wanting more transparency and, once in power, immediately dumped the only two democratically-elected board members off the board of Auckland Transport,” Reeves said.

“Now ratepayers have no voice in that organisation. I will personally work to change Auckland

Council and Auckland Transport and other out-of-control Council Controlled Organisations.”

On immigration and housing, he is blunt. “If we do not slow housing demand through taking a breather on mass-immigration, we will never get on top of the current housing crisis,” “It is reported we are short of 250,000 houses, yet in the past 12 months only 29,500 were built across the entire country. We will never catch up at that rate.”

And on education, he is equally unequivocal.

“With the huge developments and expansion occurring in Beachlands, it is absolutely clear it is time for Central Government to purchase land in the district for a future secondary school.

“For the past nine years the current Government has only paid lip service to this issue.”

United Future announces new leader United Future has a new leader – and it’s one of our very own.

Botany candidate Damian Light has been appointed new leader following the news long-time leader Peter Dunne would not stand for re-election in the upcoming General Election.

Dunne has been the local member of parliament for the Ohariu electorate for 33 years.

He cited the “current political environment...extremely volatile and unpredictable” as contributing to his decision to step down.

Light has represented United Future as candidate in the last four elections and is currently the spokesperson for Auckland Issues and Diversity.

He recently released the party list – of which the top four candidates are all under age 40.

Light said this “shows our commitment to future generations”.

“There is a good mix of new candidates and those with experience, plus a wide range of personal and professional experience.”

Light has served on the party board as well as party secretary and president.

“Running for parliament is all-consuming and I’d like to acknowledge the unwavering support I’ve received from my family and boyfriend throughout this campaign,” he said.

As the new manager of the Howick Village, I have come to find that Howick Village is a busy place all of the year around. With event planning underway, AGM’s just around the corner and Christmas looming, there is no shortage of tasks to do.

I am enjoying the friendliness of both business owners and shoppers, who are very encouraging of the role that the Business Association plays within the Association‘s membership, and in the community. Thank you to everyone who has shown support and have made me feel very welcome. Both business and community share the same space, so it is logical we all work together for the betterment of Howick Village as a whole.

Planning is well underway for the annual Midnight Madness event to be held on November 17. We are looking forward to seeing the odd superhero and/or princess, maybe an Elvis or two, along with face painters, Sammy the train and other entertainers and performances throughout the night.

Alongside the Midnight Madness event, there will be the lighting of the Howick Christmas Tree on Stockade Hill. Businesses are planning activities in-store, from photo booths to competitions. The town centre readies itself for spring.

We are expecting another busy market season with stallholders offering produce, gifts and treats for those attending.

The market is on each Saturday morning, from 8.30am – 12.30pm, so head along and find some deliciousness from our market, or stop and have something to nibble on at one of our local cafés.

The planters that are in the middle of the main streets have been coned off recently, and a number of shoppers have been wondering what is going on with them. The good news is that the planters are being refurbished, so we expect these to look fabulous over the coming weeks.

It was a pleasure to present prizes at the recent Howick Historical Society’s Daffodil and Camellia Show, held recently at the Fencible Lounge (Howick Library) last week, with the organizer being presented with the most prestigious recognition of service from the northern daffodil society. The large array of daffodils was evident and very passionate people leading the fray. Being involved with events such as this just makes my day!

nger, hurt, anxiety and depression are some of the emotions parents experience when a child is diagnosed with autism.

Life can be challenging and lonely for a parent whose child is on the Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Talita De Lange is one such mother who felt her dreams were dashed when she was informed that their son Michael was on the spectrum (varying levels of autism) in Dec 2014.

“We attended courses on autism and the support we experienced by being with other families who were going through a similar journey was so precious and uplifting,” she says.

Hearing about stories of progress and breakthroughs helped but when the courses ended, Talita found it hard to keep in contact with the families.

Fortunately, when she spoke about it to the St Columba Presbyterian Church (at 480 Ti Rakau Drive), they suggested that that perhaps they could have a get-together for a few families sharing the same journey.

That’s how the St Columba Special Kids Playgroup and Families Support Group was formed.

Held every Monday and Wednesday from 12.30-2.30pm, the playgroup sessions are a good opportunity for mothers to relax whilst their children play in a safe and relaxed environment.

“We share stories of hope and talk about light at the end of the tunnel,”

says the mother of five-and-a-halfyear-old Michael and four-year- old Sonja who are both on the spectrum.

“Talking to other mothers dealing with special needs children helps us to share tips on coping in school, toilet training or dealing with aggression.”

The playgroup that is held after the neurotypical (normal children) playgroup in the mornings at the church and run by Dawn Preest – helps both mothers and special needs children to have a social connection and form friendships.

“It’s hard for our children to be in public places where they feel a sensory overload.

“Our kids often struggle in crowded playgroups because of noise or social over-stimulation, so this small group was perfect.

Simon Randall, the council’s acting head of operational management and maintenance says Watercare was sent to investigate.

“They have been to the site and can confirm there are no issues or overflows from the wastewater network. They have also sampled the water and confirm there is no indication of wastewater present in the waterway,” he says.

“There is a large residential catchment above the stream so there is always a risk that pollution may be tipped from a private drain. This could be a one-off.”

Randall says blue-green algae, which can affect people, livestock and pets that swim in and drink from algae-contaminated water, is unlikely at this time of year given the weather conditions.

However on Monday a specialist from council’s Healthy Waters team looked for potential algal blooms.

Results from the lab have not yet been released to the Times.

“The council would not be proactive with warnings at this stage until we knew what we were dealing with, if anything. In the meantime, we urge dog owners to report any illnesses to their vet,” he says.

devastated dog owner is warning others to be careful after her dogs were poisoned at Eastern Beach’s Macleans Park.

Shirley McNaught rushed her two labradors to Buckland’s Beach Vet Clinic last Tuesday afternoon just hours after they went for a walk at Macleans Park.

McNaught says her 3-year-old black lab Archie started vomiting less than two hours after going for a swim in one of the streams at the park. He deteriorated quickly suffering from seizures, vomiting and tremors.

McNaught’s other dog Hine suffered similar symptoms after being caught eating Archie’s vomit. The dogs were placed on a drip and administered medication in an effort to save their lives.

While Archie improved, Hine was rushed to Manukau After Hours Vet Clinic (MAHVC) to be monitored overnight.

The dogs are now home safely.

The vet bill was almost $2000, which the pensioner says has put a huge strain on her financially.

McNaught says she is very disappointed with Auckland Council’s slow action following the incident.

“When the vets were trying to get information on any bait that had been laid or spraying that had been done, it took two hours

to get a response back from council. My dogs could have easily died in the meantime,” she says.

“I don’t think the council are taking this seriously. The council aren’t monitoring what’s going on in our parks. They pass them off to contractors, but who’s actually checking that the parks are safe?”

Niki Hotter, a staff member at MAHVC, says Hine was one of three dogs that have presented at the clinic with these symptoms in the last few weeks after being walked in Macleans Park.

Hotter says all three dogs developed tremors and life-threatening seizures only hours after walking in the park near the flying fox.

The vets treating the dogs suspect blue-green algae toxicity is the cause of the poisoning.

MAHVC has been in contact with council which confirmed no bait had been laid down in recent months and no spraying had been done recently.

Local resident Vicky Williamson said on Monday she saw a sign warning dog owners about the poisonings near the flying fox. She said that when she contacted Auckland Council about the notice she was told “it would be removed as it didn’t have approval to be posted on council property. “I said then I was notifying council that there is a problem with dogs being poisoned and asked if she would please

Painting and artist reunited News bites Waste-free Ag Day Brookby School is working hard to gain it Bronze Enviro Award, which it is being assessed for in November.

“As part of getting this award, for the first time this year we are running our Ag Day on September 24 as a ‘waste- free’ event where we try and reduce as much rubbish as possible as well as diverting as much as possible from landfill,” said Enviro teacher Sarah Blong.

The main way we are doing this is having reycling and compost stations on the day that will be manned by our enthusiastic Enviro Council students as well as teaming up with some super helpful Howick College Enviro students. We are also using compostable food packaging as part of this strategy.”

Thieves steal ice cream

Police are investigating a burglary at the Whitford BP petrol station early on Saturday morning.

The business was closed at the time. Police were called at around 3.30am by someone who had witnessed people attempting to break in via the front door. Police attended and discovered that the bottom window of the front door had been smashed.

The offenders had taken ice cream and other food items.

Police said enquiries are ongoing to identify and locate the offenders.

Viewshaft tweaks T

he Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association (HRRA) is seeking adjustments to the viewshaft protection around Stockade Hill.

By putting in place a viewshaft, Auckland Council is following through with the requirement won by the HRRA at the hearings of the Unitary Plan when Judge David Fitzpatrick recommended that the council work with HRRA to establish a new viewshaft for Stockade Hill, said HRRA chair Gayleen Mackereth.

Since the official Plan Change 3 creating the new viewshaft to preserve the views from the Rotary rotunda (or “toposcope” ) indicating the islands of the

Gulf and other geographical features visible from Stockade Hill, HRRA has been “hard at work checking the fine print and remeasuring some of the assumptions in the proposed viewshaft”.

“HRRA is preparing an extensive submission applauding the work which has gone into the viewshaft preparation but recommending that the viewshaft be extended to the apex of Stockade Hill in line with the low rise Howick Village Centre Plan and are also urging protection for the views as one enters Howick along Ridge Rd,” Mrs Mackereth said.

“HRRA is also drawing attention to the larger view

from Stockade Hill with views to the city and Sky Tower and at least seven volcanic cones, views which, they feel, are all worthy of viewshaft protection.”

Mrs Mackereth said they are disappointed that the Mixed Housing Urban high level intensification zone still applies instead of reversion to Single Housing zone as under Manukau Heritage Zone.

HRRA have been urging citizens to fill in the online submission form to support or amend the proposed viewshaft on the council website.

The submission process closes today (September 7).

Spring festival packed with power

By FARIDA MASTER Sitting in the front row and swaying to the rhythm of the beat at the Koanga Festival hosted on Saturday at Somerville Intermediate School was Whaea Taini Drummond, a familiar Maori figure known to all schools in the area.

Twenty- six years ago, when Mrs Drummond had a vision of Koanga Festival with the idea of introducing the love for Maori culture in the school curriculum, she never imagined that the festival would grow to this magnitude.

Saturday morning didn’t curb the enthusiasm of hundreds of students from 38 primary and secondary schools in Howick, Pakuranga, Botany and Whitford. The powhiri started with blessings by Mrs Drummond, while students of Pigeon Mountain and Bucklands Beach Intermediate carried the ceremonial waka down the aisle to the stage at Somerville Intermediate.

Months of hard work and training unfolded on stage as kapa haka groups accompanied by guitarists won the audiences over with their powerful and enchanting performances.

As we approach the Elections it would appear to some that we have a chance to elect candidates who could direct our nation where it needs to go.

The great Roman Empire decayed from within. I think we are in a similar situation here in NZ. There is a sense of despair as if we have lost our moral compass. Tolerance is the ‘in’ word and reflects our prevalent cultural attitudes. We tolerate the changed definition of traditional ‘marriage’ being a union of a man and a woman, to now be inclusive of LGBT. We demand that euthanasia be available on request. That drug freedoms beginning with marijuana be liberalised. The present culture of ungodly liberalism of sexual and drug permissiveness progresses incrementally.

We are rotting in the core.

Outside we look great – even the economy is bubbling along, but inside we are decaying away with little or no leadership.

Have a close look at how our politicians voted in the past on these moral issues. Fortunately there is one who stands out above the others when it comes to moral integrity. Check it out for yourselves. Strong families have always meant a strong nation and righteousness always defines great nations so make sure your vote counts and reverse the downward slippery slope.

Do you want the senior vote?

Political Parties beware – we might be old but we still have a voice.

Watching the news last night (Wednesday, Augusut 30), the election bribes keep coming from all the political parties promising what they will do for us if we vote for them.

We hear promises like extending parental leave with time off for both parents, free postsecondary education for a year along with an additional $50 per week for university students.

One promise that is sadly missing is what will these parties do for pensioners. We are the forgotten generation who have worked hard all our lives, been honest law-abiding citizens – for what?

Many are living on the bread line struggling to make ends meet, costs are rising but pensions are not – $50/week would go a long way to help pensioners pay their bills. The National Party promised us 66 per cent per person of the average wage but have only delivered 33 per cent Seniors need to be recognised as the people who fought in wars and helped build New Zealand to what it is today. Our politicians chase the seniors votes as they are the most reliable voting bloc but deliver nothing to earn that vote.

Political parties beware – we all have children and grandchildren, all with a vote!

No one likes to see people suffer in their old age at a time in life when they should be enjoying themselves.

Is it a case of – if our politicians ignore us long enough we will all die off and the problem will go away? Politicians will grow old themselves but perhaps they will not need to depend on the pension to live on.

Ferries the way forward

Of all England’s commuters only 9 per cent use public transport.

Of those 9 per cent, only 1 per cent use rail and 3 per cent use water transport or ferries.

On those statistics, long-term would suggest a pier and ferry terminal of Howick beach served by buses (long-term) would be a better option and more cost-effective than the proposed railway route along Ti Irirangi Drive.

The bald fact is trains are the worst mode of transport at delivering both passenger and luggage nearest to home.

The fact that 91 per cent of all English commuters prefer their own private transport is a figure that will rise with the advent of the cheaper electric cars and vans. It points to ferries and fast-track bus lanes being far more cost effective and efficient at delivering passengers close to home than rail.

A proud display at historical village L

ew Duffet was truly moved when he heard that the Howick and Districts Historical Society were going to honour the memory of his favourite horse Logan by installing a beautiful fibreglass horse with a carriage at the village.

It’s the same horse wagon that Logan used to cart children and adults around, on Live Days at the historical village. The proud display is in front of the Puhi Nui homestead.

Lew and Logan were a familiar sight for over 10 years as they would happily trot down Church Street and round the pond, back up to Logan’s hitch-

ing post by the Courthouse.

“Logan was no ordinary horse and never put a foot wrong,” says 78-year-old long standing volunteer who has been associated with the historic village since the last 17 years.

The former engineer still visits the village on Wednesdays to restore old wagons and custom designed carts.

Lew, an avid horse trekker bought Logan from the sets of Xena: Warrior Princess in the year 2000.

“He was a friend to me and in the mornings when I stepped out, it was like he always wished me good morning with a

whinny.”

Sadly at the age of 18, Logan developed a tumour in his throat and passed away on April 4, 2014.

Though Lew owned Logan’s sister Fleur, things were never the same.

However, with this thoughtful gesture Lew is thrilled that Logan now lives on forever in the hearts of all those who had known him or will get to hear about him at the village.

Visitors to the village will get an opportunity to get dressed in costume and have their photograph taken sitting on the buggy as a photo memento.

On the back of our August show of recent works by Russell Hollings, we are continuing our string of painting-focused exhibitions with Changes Of Direction

by Peter Hall which runs from September 1-14. Hall’s works are charming and bright, often featuring familiar landscapes, flora and fauna.

I feel like this show couldn’t come at a better time as we are now into spring time with new blooms and warmer days just around the corner.

What I find so appealing in Hall’s paintings is the intentional flat perspective and the way he breaks up his landscapes with abstraction and

pattern repetition, a visual technique that would be drawn from his long and successful career in textile design.

Hall’s experience as a designer has greatly influenced his style and approach to painting and now that he is no longer being bound by strict design disciplines, his experience lends itself to using minimal colour palettes, giving his work a bold and somewhat pop art feel.

While the paintings often have a minimised depth of field, this tends to make me imagine them as paper dioramas, where you could step into Hall’s inspired world and move beyond each facet.

A full-time opportunity has become available for a motivated individual who is passionate about gardening and maintenance, preferably with heritage gardening experience.

Primarily responsible for the management and maintenance of the planted landscape of Howick Historical Village and managing a small team of volunteers. There will also be periodic requirements to contribute directly to the conservation activities around the Village.

Key Skills Gardening experience and an interest in heritage gardens and plants is essential.

Ideally you will possess 3 to 4 years’ previous horticultural experience, including the use of a range of horticultural maintenance equipment, but we will consider candidates with less experience.

A full manual driver’s license is preferred and your customer service skills will need to be exemplary.

This is an active outdoors role, so physical fitness and good health is essential along with the ability to follow instructions and work within a small team.

This is a permanent, full time role, 40 hours per week on a flexible basis to meet requirements of the position, generally week days but with some week-end work required.

Local selected for U18 Futsal squad I

t was on his third birthday at Anchorage Park Kindergarten that Arzan Todywalla’s father noticed his son kick a ball at the speed of a rocket.

Arzan was 18 months old when his parents migrated to New Zealand. The young parents went through all the normal struggles as new migrants to ensure their children did well in life.

After recognising Arzan’s talent, dad Viraf secured his admission at Fencibles United AFC when he turned six, expecting that after some years of practice, their son would be ready to play competitively.

However, Arzan proved himself within the very first year by winning Most Valuable Player of the year in 2007 alongside other accolades – and he hasn’t stopped.

In 2011, Arzan participated in a Futsal trial, a variant of football played indoors on a hard court that is smaller than a football pitch with

five players on each team. He was selected and began to enjoy the challenges Futsal provided.

Since then, Arzan has represented New Zealand overseas in the game and won the title of ‘All Star’ in 2014 – a much sought-after title by more than 500 Futsal players in New Zealand and Australia.

Arzan has recently been selected as part of the Oceania Football Confederation U18 men’s Futsal team to play in the inaugural U18 National Futsal Squad competition at Bruce Pulman Park, Takanini, from October 4-7.

“I am excited and feel honoured to be a part of OFC U18 and very grateful to the coaches Marvin and Bakkr to train, support and above all believe in me.

“I am looking forward to gain utmost experience and try my best to make my nation New Zealand proud,” said Arzan.

etball coach Janine Southby produced two master strokes that led to her rookie Silver Ferns team winning the Quad Series in Invercargill at Australia’s expense on Sunday.

One was matching 1.92m goal keep Kelly Jury against 1.93m Diamonds goal shoot Caitlin Bassett to counter the Aussie sharpshooter’s usual height advantage.

The other was switching the bibs of her own shooters to allow the more mobile Bailey Mes to play goal attack.
