One little boy's wish to walk

hen Ethan Jones arrived in this world, nearly three months earlier than he should have and weighing only 1.4kg, his family had no idea what lay ahead for him.

Daily physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, speech therapy, conductive education and regular Botox injec-

tions in his legs to reduce stiffness are the reality for the now fouryear-old.

Ethan has cerebral palsy (CP) and in a few short months will fly to St Louis Children’s Hospital in America for life changing surgery.

At the moment, the youngster cannot walk or stand and struggles to sit independently.

ocal teacher Subash Chandar K couldn’t believe his luck when he was told that he was selected to be the commander for a Mission to Mars.

From experiencing a gravity-defying moon walk in a space suit, to designing and building their own rockets, the curriculum leader for maths at Ormiston Senior College won a week-long experience at the US Space and Rocket Centre in Huntsville, Alabama.

Having just returned from a life changing journey at the NASA space camp, the award-winning teacher who won the National Excellence in Teaching Award in February this year is literally spaced out.

Talking about the completely immersive experiences, the ASG Space Camp Ambassador for NZ Award says there was a range of physically challenging tasks as well as mental exercises thrown at them for 12 hours a day.

“Most things were competitive,” he says.

“We stayed at the University of Huntsville. There were educators from all over the world, a lot of whom had been either sponsored or paid for the experience at the space camp.”

“Our team Zarya’s highlight was the collaboration and teamwork involved in simulated space shuttle landings. We did the low earth orbit mission where they’d throw anomalies at us and as commander for Mission to Mars, I had to make sure that our space shuttle mission was a successful one.

“It was quite intense as our ship could crash, but we made it. We laughed and cried, we supported each other and we pushed our limits. We won the mission, graduated and got wings. I even got a commander patch,” he says.

The simulated moon walk as well as the multi-axis trainer was a huge attraction, he shares.

“It was such an awesome

experience. It’s based on a real life astronaut training simulator where you are strapped and get flipped upside down. But if you keep your eyes open you don’t feel dizzy at all. Though I had breakfast that morning, I didn’t get sick because the stomach is a centre of gravity on that machine,” he explains.

Now, the maths enthusiast who is known for leading

professional learning workshop for Maths teachers in Auckland plans to filter some of the big ideas that he was fired with at the space camp.

“I need to figure out how to get our kids to the space camp.

“It’s important for them to get inspired and invigorated.

Life will never be the same after that mind-expanding experience.”

Howick Local Board has classified Bucklands Beach Domain and Morrow Avenue Reserve as recreation reserves.

Both are Department of Conservation land managed by Auckland Council, and they must be classified under the Reserves Act. It’s good news for Bucklands Beach Sea Scouts, which needs the correct classification in place before it can have its

lease renewed.

The move also means both can be vested in trust to the council, a move that allows the council to manage the reserves in line with its own policies and processes.

Howick Local Board has been told council officers support recreational reserve status because it reflects what the areas are now used for and will allow the land to be used to its full potential while

protecting its ecological value.

Bucklands Beach Domain is four land parcels, three in Morrow Avenue subject to the Reserves Act, and Lot 51 in Clovelly Road, owned by the council since 1964, but not for reserve purposes.

The change aligns it with the Reserves Act. Morrow Avenue Reserve is one parcel occupied by the Bucklands Beach Bowling Club.

Smart pole helps foil boy racers at Brookby It doesn’t look much but its cutting edge technology and it’s helping a tiny rural community combat a modern menace.

Energy company Vector has installed one of the country’s first “smart poles” on the corner of Brookby and Twilight roads in Brookby, a favourite haunt of boy racers.

As well as carrying power lines, the smart pole can be used for other functions such as LED street lighting, CCTV, EV (electric vehicle) charging, wi-fi and weather monitoring.

It is now waiting for the CCTV cameras the community hopes will put a stop to the boy racers.

Spearheading the move is resident

Jenny Edmunds who back in May got fed up with having her nights ruined by the sound of cars doing burnouts at the intersection.

She contacted Hunua MP Andrew Bayly for help and he suggested holding a public meeting with residents, police and Franklin Local Board representatives.

The meeting decided the answer was CCTV cameras with plate recognition technology.

But where to put them? Mr Bayly set up a meeting between Ms Edmunds, supporters Selwyn Pellett and Alistair Grant and Vector which came to the party with the smart pole.

It was installed last weekend.

Z Post has confirmed that it is partnering with Paper Plus Howick from Monday August 26.

Kiwibank announced last September it is to close its Howick branch and that New Zealand Post would look for a local business to take up some of its services.

NZ Post said this week that collaborating with Paper Plus Howick would help to deliver postal services and bill payments currently available from the Howick NZ Post and Kiwibank.

The new agency will be directly across the road from the current PostShop.

New Zealand Post head of retail Mark Yagmich said in a media statement that the group is thrilled to be working with Paper Plus Howick.

“We already successfully work with businesses in this way in over 800 locations across the country, and have done in many locations for years.

While we acknowledge this is a change in how people access these services, we do hope people enjoy the fact our new partner is located just right across the road from our current location,” he said.

“This model of working with local businesses works well for our customers, who often enjoy longer opening hours.

“It is also more financially sustainable for NZ Post, in an everchanging mix of postal services usage - the decline of mail, versus the significant increase in parcel services. It’s also good for the businesses we work with, as they enjoy additional income both from transacting postal services on our behalf and by having more customers coming through their doors to pick up their parcel or send a postcard,” he says.

NZ Post said there will be no changes to the services available at the Howick PostShop until August 26.

The Howick PO Box Lobby will remain in Howick, and NZ Post will be communicating directly with customers.

Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown is welcoming the news that New Zealand Post is retaining postal and bill paying services in Howick via its partnership with Paper Plus.

“There has been a lot of uncertainty in the area following the announcement last year that the NZ Post branch in Howick would be closing, but I am pleased that NZ Post followed through on their commitment to retain local services.”

News bites Grants announced The New Zealand Community Trust has awarded many grants in the Auckland region for July, including several for local groups. Fencibles United AFC has been awarded $20,000 toward the salary of the director of football; Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club has been granted $6800 for replacement carpet for indoor cricket nets; Ormiston Hoops Basketball Club Trust was granted $2000 towards the salary of the administration secretary; Pakuranga Croquet Club $2754.83 towards AED (defibrillator) and Wakaaranga School was granted $20,000 for towards weatherproof canopy.

Police appeal for information in Flat Bush assault

Flex appeal – age no barrier to CrossFit glory Cockle Bay resident Amy Myring is on top of the world after claiming gold at the NZ CrossFit nationals competition held at the Avantidome in Cambridge.

The 48 year old, who trains out of CrossFit Raw Strength in Howick, competed recently in the Women’s Masters 40-50 Year old division after pre-qualifying as one of the nation’s top eight athletes in that age bracket.

Held over two days from July 20, 21, the gruelling competition format encompassed CrossFit workouts ranging from a 400 metre swim, to a one rep maximum Olympic Snatch Lift.

After winning the title in 2017, this latest win has put Amy on cloud nine and adds the latest triumph “seems sweeter because I am older”.

Amy got into the sport nearly six years ago when CrossFit Raw Strength opened in the Les Mills building in Meadowlands.

Becoming a champion requires the obligatory hard work and dedication. She trains six days a week, for between one-to-two hours in each session dependant on what competition she is preparing for.

There is a massive amount of varied preparation for CrossFit, as Amy says “you need to be competent in many areas of strength and fitness, as we do a variety of gymnastic movements, running, swimming, rowing and weight lifting”.

Auckland on the 28th-29th of September where she will compete with a partner, and following that will again try to make the cut for the CrossFit Games. Held in the United States, the event is the pinnacle of the sport with parallels drawn with the Olympics.

Qualifying is this coming October and currently Amy sits 26th in the world after the most recent qualifying round, with the top 10 going to the big dance.

A tough, but not impossible task there is no chance of Amy is shying away from the challenge, as she puts it “CrossFit is the hardest but most rewarding sport I have ever done”.

n assault in Flat Bush recently has police appealing for the public’s help to identify the suspects.

The incident took place on Cooladawson Drive just after 5pm on July 9 where a man was walking to his car and was assaulted by another man.

Police believe the assault was unprovoked.

The victim was released from hospital but is still recovering from his injuries. Police want

information about two vehicles of interest that were caught on CCTV at the scene of the assault.

The first vehicle is a grey or silver vehicle that is believed to be a late model Nissan Dualis and was carrying one of the offenders.

The second vehicle is described only as white and was carrying two female occupants at the time.

Police are also looking to identify one of the offenders, described to be of Maori or Pacific Island descent and of heavy build.

He was wearing a white top with a dark-coloured sling bag across his back.Police would also like to speak to a man who was wearing a yellow hi-viz jacket and was walking nearby at the time of the incident.

This man is not a suspect but may be able to help detectives with the investigation. Anyone with information can contact Counties Manukau Police on 261 1300 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Celebrating a special birthday This month The Children’s Corner Howick is celebrating the 150th birthday of Maria Montessori, the founder of the amazing, peace-driven, educational philosophy.

Born on August 31, 1870, she was the first female medical doctor in Italy and a true pioneer in her field. She developed the Montessori approach to education based on independence, respect, a love of learning and following the interests of the individual child.

Dr Montessori created a

carefully planned environment that allow the children’s natural abilities to flourish. Montessori schools exist around the world and her influence can still be strongly felt to this day.

Centre owner Diane Cornelius said, “To celebrate Maria Montessori’s birthday we thought it would be lovely for the children to plant some trees for our garden and, in a nod to Dr Montessori’s Italian heritage, we chose lemon trees.

of the world around them and our pre-schoolers will learn so much through nurturing these fruit trees and watching them grow.”

Helping Ethan to find his feet ➤➤From page 1 “At night he can’t even turn himself over so he calls out to me to turn him over.”

When Ethan was born, Melissa says she and husband Owen were told he would likely be a vegetable, never able to walk, talk or do anything for himself.

“Here he is, talking, eating and doing so many things they didn’t think he would be able to and as long as he doesn’t give up, neither will we,” she says.

Melissa says the SDR surgery involves snipping the nerve that causes Ethan’s muscle stiffness, allowing him to move and function more comfortably.

“For us it’s about giving him the best life he can live. He will finally

have some independence and not be living in constant pain,” she says.

“This surgery will guarantee he will be able to walk with the assistance of a walker or crutches and it’s his only chance to ever be able to walk independently.”

Following the surgery, Ethan will have to completely retrain his muscles, much like a baby learning to walk for the first time.

The surgery is not available, nor funded, in New Zealand and with a $150,000 price tag, the Jones family has been fundraising to cover the costs.

This September they will be hosting their final fundraiser to raise the remaining $40,000 needed to cover post-surgery rehabilitation for Ethan.

Ethan’s Wish to Walk Comedy Night Fundraiser is on Saturday, September 7 at the Howick and Pakuranga Netball Court Hall, Lloyd Elsmore Park.

The comedians include Eli Matthewson, Angella Dravid, Paul Douglas and others.

Schools raise cash for mental health

tudent leaders from east Auckland schools have been collaborating for a number of weeks to organise fundraising initiatives across the region.

In addition to mufti-days and blanket drives, head students and prefects from Pakuranga College, Howick College, Macleans College, Edgewater College, St Kentigern College, Sancta Maria College, Ormiston Senior College, Botany Downs Secondary College and Elim Christian College, along with members from the Howick Youth Council, hosted a Charity Concert on Thursday August 1 to raise money for Mike King’s `I Am Hope’ Foundation—that helps Kiwi kids get free mental health counselling and support .

Featuring music ensembles and dance groups from all nine schools, this was also a great

There was an amazing turnout, with over 250 tickets sold. Along

with a generous donation from Hynds Foundation, the event raised a total of $2450 for ‘I Am Hope’.

New defibrillator at Howick beach Howick Lions and Howick Volunteer Coastguard have announced a new lifesaving joint venture.

They now have a defibrillator that is available to the local community 24/7 from the outside of the Coastguard Building at Howick Beach.

This has been made available through the fund raising and

generosity of the Howick Lions Club. The defibrillator is located in a lock box on the western side of the building.

Access to open the lock box is gained by calling 111, Ambulance.

The 111 operator will ask for the location of the box and the caller will be given a code to unlock the box thus getting access to the defibrillator.

At the same time a St John Ambulance unit will be despatched to the location.

The defibrillator is a very userfriendly model.

Poppies gets behind Stockade Hill campaign H

owick bookshop Poppies has been encouraging people to re-read and rehome their books – with all the proceeds going to a very good cause.

“In these times of downsizing and clearing out clutter, many of us have a lot of books we simply don’t know what to do with.” said Poppies owner Tony Moores.

“Our fundraising book swap scheme invited the public to bring in their unwanted books.

We put them on display for anyone to swap a book for a gold coin donation.”

They were inundated with books - so much so, that they

had to call a halt to the bags and boxes of donated books that came pouring in from generous donors.

Book hunters of all ages were able to pick up a bargain with a mass of titles, both old and new, that ranged from fiction, biographies, children’s books, arts and crafts and cooking.

As well as finding new homes for hundreds of books, the preloved book sale raised $700, all of which has been donated to the ongoing campaign to Save Stockade Hill Views.

Sixty years, a blink of an eye for the Shelly Park Cruising Club Six decades.

This is how long the Shelly Park Cruising Club has been around giving boaties the chance to meet and support other likeminded people.

Later this month they will be commemorating 60 years with a big celebration bringing together members past and present at the Maraetai Beach Boating Clubrooms.

The club was formed in 1959 by a small group of men who had boats that they needed moorings for, and a need for mutual assistance with maintenance of the boats and their moorings.

They would get together to take part in summer cruises, boat races, family picnics and working bees.

Activities included a winter racing series for the yachts, summer cruising races, a single handed race, a two handed night race around Waiheke and a ladies race for which a lady had to be on the helm throughout.

The annual picnic, a bonfire night, and the annual prizegiving social were other highlights of the club’s social calendar.

Even though the times have changed, and some of the club’s original activities have dropped off such as the regular racing series, the cruising club is still one of the last boating clubs of

its kind where members provide mutual assistance to each other in all aspects of boating.

The picnic is still held each year on a nearby island beach (Motuihe, or Waiheke), now with many original members bringing not only their children but grandchildren with them.

The family-orientated club shares the love of boating from generation to generation.

Summer cruises and bi-annual working bees are also still on the yearly agenda.

Over the years the club has also developed operating codes of best practice for environmental protection when maintaining their boats and exceptional health and safety practices.

They have also developed lasting and valuable relationships with neighbouring clubs such as the Howick Sea Scouts who they have shared the reserve with for many years.

Recently they signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Howick Sea Scouts for increased and continuing mutual support and involvement in each other’s activities.

Six decades on and the cruising club is here to stay.

Tarnica Park safety campaign paying off A

community campaign to increase safety at a dangerous east Auckland park is finally making progress.

Residents who live near Tarnica Park in Northpark, led by local man Gordon Luke, have been working for months supported by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross to stop young people from engaging in anti-social activity at the park.

They previously presented a petition to the local board in March that calls for lights and a security camera to be installed at the park and have addressed the board’s members with Mr Ross twice.

A group of the residents and Mr Ross met at the local board room at Pakuranga Library for 90 minutes last Saturday with board members and a council officer to talk about the problems and find a solution.

Mr Luke said there’s been two stabbings at the park and people have been verbally abused there.

“We’ve had two fires at the park.

We have graffiti at the park and we’ve had rubbish dumped there.

“We want to do something to make this park safer for our kids and for everyone who uses that walkway [through the park] into Botany.”

A lengthy discussion ensued about how many times residents had phoned police to report incidents at Tarnica Park.

The board members said just five calls had been made to police about the park in the past 10 years accord-

Mr Ross said it felt like the meeting was focusing on why the local board won’t do anything, “rather than what solutions can be arrived at”.

Board member Adele White suggested a sensor light be installed by the children’s playground at the park as “that’s a gathering place where people drink”.

She said it would be solar-pow-

ered so it wouldn’t need to be connected to a power source and would be activated by movement.

Board chairman David Collings said the light would need to be industrial-strength and vandalproof.

He apologised to the residents for the length of time it’s taken to find a solution to the problems at the park and committed to having the light installed by summer.

Market remains quiet through winter months T

he New Zealand property market remains quiet through winter, with quarterly value growth remaining at 0.1 per cent.

Despite this subdued growth, many regional areas including the Western Bay of Plenty, Hutt Valley and Porirua continue to see values steadily rise, supported by a strong regional economy. Over the past year, average national property values steadily increased, up 2.2 per cent.

Meanwhile, residential property value growth across the Auckland region decreased by 2.6 per cent year on year and by 0.8 per cent over the past quarter. The average value for the Auckland region is now $1,025,389.

As per usual, as we emerge out of winter, we’re expecting a slight increase in listings and sales volumes although this won’t have a substantial impact on market trends.”

Value growth remains slow across Auckland’s suburbs. North Shore values dropped 4.3 per cent in the year to July and by 1.5 per cent over the past three months. The average value there is now $1,171,694. The former Auckland City Council central suburbs dropped 2.9 per cent year on year and by 0.5 per cent over the past three months and the average value there is now $1,209,861. “Now there is much more efficient use of space. I can now take things out of the dishwasher and put them straight in the drawers. It’s amazing how well it works,” he says.

The clean, white and bright look of the renovated kitchen sits well with the overall look of the house.

“We used Dezignatek doors with Rhonda profiling which is a modern yet traditional look,” says Nairi.

Modest price drop pushes up sales numbers T

he Auckland residential property market underwent a modest but definite shift in July with property sales prices falling and sales numbers rising.

“The modest fall in both average and median prices in the month was enough to unlock sales numbers, with July sales being their highest in the month of July for three years,” said Peter Thompson, managing director of Barfoot & Thompson.

For the previous three months sales numbers were more subdued with prices tending to edge higher.

In July the fall in prices compared to the average for the previous three months was relatively small in the case of the average price at $919,648 (down $12,000) but more significant in the case of the median price at $800,500 (down $41,000).

The fall in prices has contributed to a greater number of sales conditional on buyers selling their own property going ahead.

In July it resulted in sales numbers at 879 being 11.8 per cent ahead of those in June, 16

per cent ahead of the average for the previous three months and 5.9 percent ahead of those for July last year.

“It is a positive sign that the Auckland market is getting through the traditional winter downturn in better shape than in the previous two years,” said Thompson.

“Another positive sign was new listings for the month at 1154 being well ahead of those for June (up 14 per cent) and those for July last year (up 9.2 per cent).

“A feature of July’s sales was the relatively high number of sales of property in the under $500,000 price category, which at 15.9 per cent of sales was significantly higher than we normally see.”

It points to the higher number of apartment and terrace housing sales showing in the monthly statistics, and the growing acceptance in Auckland of this form of housing.

“It can be anticipated that this growing sector of the market will continue to impact on the average and median sales prices

being achieved,” he said.

“Sales of property in the $1 million plus and $2m plus sales category combined made up 28 per cent of all sales in the month.

These price categories regularly make up a third of all sales.

“At month end we had 3864 properties on our books, the lowest number for sale in the past 17 months.

“With buyers re-entering the market, now represents a good time for those considering to sell their property to list.”

The rural and lifestyle markets experienced a second consecutive positive month, particularly to the south of Auckland.

“Sales of rural and lifestyle property in the under $1.5m price category were solid, with a number of properties that had been on the market for some months changing hands. In this area it has led to a shortage of available listings.”

To the north of Auckland while rural and lifestyle sales were positive, sales activity was being restricted with listings not matching buyer interest.

Owairoa Primary celebrates International Day We are the world, that’s what it felt like as we walked into the gates of Owairoa Primary School on Friday morning. More than 900 students dressed in their national costumes for a parade, showcased an array of 57 nations, all in one school, for International Day. The staff morning tea started off on a fun note as Principal Alan McIntyre asked some of the teachers to say hello in different languages from bonjour to hola, guten tag, namaste, which had one of the Irish teachers light-heartedly share a greeting when translated meant ‘let’s go to the pub’. Later in the day, the little ones performed on stage as they showcased cultures from around the world.

Learn some responsibility

Well done Michael (“Family wants police to admit fault in crash”, Times, July 11) for causing the taxpayer more expense.

Your 16-year-old daughter made a bad mistake which is going to cost the police to repair their car.

Now you are trying to put the blame on them (just to get your insurance money) and demand an inquiry, ultimately at taxpayers’ expense.

Your daughter did not see a white car on a well-lit road. What more is there to say apart from the fact that she was not even allowed to drive that late.

I too had a “collision” with a youngster who crashed into the back of me, writing off the car and giving me whiplash with ongoing problems. He accused me of being too old, not indicating, brake light not working (it did) and suddenly stopping (for oncoming traffic as I was turning into my street).

His mother’s insurance company paid me out but never a word of apology from the family.

Take responsibility please and teach your kids the same.

There have been multiple offences including stabbings so for such a small number to be reported is an oxymoron and either shows we are hypochondriacs or that there is something going on internally with our team in blue.

The Luke family, Mr Ross and Howick Local Board member Mike Turinsky have done an incredible job on behalf of the residents to get a commitment in principal to have additional lighting for this area. Mr Turinsky had also gone the extra mile talking to residents on how they would feel more comfortable talking to police as well as inquiring whether security involvement would be beneficial This is hard mahi that will continue to be played out and we can only hope that the level the local board will only begin with is sufficient enough. It would also be good to see a bit more from the Botany and Flat Bush Ethnic Residents Association regarding why you shouldn’t be scared of retribution for calling the police.

It is only as a united community that we are able to tackle our community’s issues.

With the research the team mentioned above have put in, all of them have said our migrant population have shared that they are scared of what will happen if they call 111.

However having them show up would probably do a lot to combat this and I look on with a lot of interest the result of the District

Democratic Emergency Aucklanders should back a mayoralty that is inclusive, visionary and looks to restore Auckland’s confidence. Council’s culture and continued waste and incompetence is crippling our city. I don’t blame many Aucklanders who are feeling disconnected to a city that witnesses the mana of the faceless bureaucrats outweigh the mana of the citizens.

Auckland is pinned with a democratic emergency that is holding us back from our great potential.

Phil Goff’s leadership has failed to address the arrogant and out of touch CCOs. I have no doubt many Aucklanders have a vast vocabulary when it comes to describing their frustration with Panuku Development or Auckland Transport.

‘The City of Cones’ seems more fitting these days as I have great sympathy for the small-business owners affected by the CRL mess.

We need a council that work constructively where Auckland gains greater partnership with central government, councillors aren’t shut out of key strategic decisions, Local Board’s voices are heard and the CCOs are called to account.

It is time to restore democracy back to the people and address many of our serious social issues.

uckland Council’s revised policy on Dogs and related Dog Management Bylaw come into force from November this year.

From December to March 1, dog owners will be able to take their four-legged friends to beaches and parks between 10am and 5pm in areas where the local board has already implemented time and season rules.

The aim is to give dog owners flexibility to enjoy more daylight hours rather than waiting until the evening.

It also helps communicate the rules clearly to the public and allow for greater consistency across Auckland.

There are no proposed changes to local dog access rules (where dogs are allowed under control on leash, off leash or prohibited areas and designated dog exercise areas).

Local dog access rules (the type of access dogs will have) are still determined by local boards.

The changes were based on feedback from 8025 dog owners and non dog owners across Auckland on what they want to get out of their park and beaches experience.

There have also been changes to multiple dog ownership requiring anyone living in an urban residential area would need a license to own more than two dogs.

The Pakuranga Choral Society is hosting ‘Around the World in Song’ at All Saints Church in Howick on Sunday August 18. The concert of Folk songs will kickstart at 2.30pm. Tickets sold at the door: Adults $25, Seniors $20, Children (under 12) free.

A number of changes have been made to the dogs and related dog management bylaw.

This creates an opportunity for the council to work with dog owners to make sure that their property is best suited to transitioning to owning more than two dogs.

A further change is that if a dog has been classified as menacing due to bad behaviour, the owner can ask the council to reassess their classification if the owner

can provide evidence of a dog behavioural assessment report.

They must also prove their dog does not have any further infringements in a 12-month period, and the owner obtains a responsible dog ownership licence from Auckland Council.

While not a guarantee, this aims to incentivise responsible dog ownership.

The Gentleman All Black T

o those who knew him, Wairarapa farmer Sir Brian Lochore will always be known as The Gentleman All Black Captain.

For the many thousands his life touched, he will be remembered as a friend, even if their acquaintance was brief. Such was his charisma and gentle, genuine manner.

A humble, modest man with a firm handshake, Lochore had time for everyone. And the New Zealand rugby public loved him for it.

I hadn’t heard of him until listening to an All Black trial radio broadcast in the 1960s when a vocal bunch of Wairarapa supporters could be heard chanting his name above the call of the announcer.

While fans debated whether King County’s Colin Meads or Hawkes Bay’s Kel Tremain should take over the All Blacks captaincy following the retirement of Wilson Whineray, coach Fred Allen recognised something special in Lochore as a leader of men.

So it was him whom he chose in 1966. And the men he led until 1970

Sir Brian Lochore had time for everyone. And the New Zealand rugby public loved him for it.

Meanwhile ladies golf has found a bright new star in smiling Japanese star Hinako Shibuno who clinched the British Open with a glorious 18-foot putt on the last hole to beat American Lizette Salas by one shot.

A rookie playing her first tournament outside of Japan, the delightful 20-year-old, known as The Smiling Cinderella, enchanted the large galleries with her sweet nature, hand touching, long drives and exquisite putting.

Not that there was anything special in that final round first nine when she went out in 37. But the smiles got broader as she scored five birdies for 31 over the last nine to come home in dramatic style.

Earlier she had twice done better, coming home in a remarkable 30.

Never in 59 years of journalism can I recall an athlete having such fun in a demanding sport in which nerves can become easily frayed.

And the public loved her for it.

It was a performance we have long been hoping Kiwi sweetheart Lydia Ko would deliver but the former world No 1 failed to make the cut. It could be time for her to get rid of her mental demons by taking a long break.

Shibuno, meanwhile, has the golfing world at her feet, just as a precocious Ko did as a teenager. We will watch her progress with fascination.

Meanwhile we await a muchimproved performance from the All Blacks against Australia in Perth on Saturday in the knowledge the Wallabies scrum is not the pushover it once was.

May the best team win - so long as it is New Zealand.

Both Teuila and Nanise played in the 2019 BEKO competition, which saw Nanise named ‘Player of the Year’ for the Northern Marvels.

She was also awarded a Training Partner Contract with the Northern Mystics.

The three girls were also part of the Howick College Netball team that won the Secondary School Netball Nationals in 2017.

This was the first time the school had ever qualified and then gone on to win the competition.

The P2P programme, run in partnership with High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ), aims to identify, develop and retain emerging athletes capable of consistently delivering success at an international level.

The girls’ selection was based on the quality of their performances throughout 2018 and 2019 as Netball New Zealand sought top performing athletes with the potential to make the New Zealand squad for the World Youth Cup 2021 in Suva, Fiji.

The girls certainly have an impressive record. All three played for the U19 Auckland Fiji Netball Secondary (AFCN) Representative Team in 2018. Leehava was selected again

Swinging for the fences

By JIM BIRCHALL With spring threatening an appearance; it won’t be long before the thwack of maple on cowhide rings around Lloyd Elsmore Park as baseball takes centre-stage.

The sport is still developing in New Zealand and has traditionally jostled with cricket, tennis and sister-game softball for summer participation.

Recently however, Auckland’s diverse population and pay TV access to Major League Baseball has resulted in an upward trend in player numbers.

One of these agents of change, local club the Howick Hawks, have been putting out sides in the Auckland baseball competition since the early 1990s and have fielded youth teams since 1993. Currently it has more than 200 registered players, a fair chunk of the estimated 1500 nationwide.

Club president Glen Campbell started his involvement in baseball after seeing an ad in the Times which led to his son ditching cricket for America’s national pastime. Hard work paid off for both Campbell’s sons Scott and Aaron, who played college ball, and, in Scott’s case, professionally after being drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the mid 2000s.

In total 18 players from the club’s youth ranks have progressed to play for US colleges, highlighting the Hawks’ strong coaching and

nurturing infrastructure and development pathway.

The Hawks’ home has been Lloyd Elsmore Park since 1998 after moving from their original base in Eastern Beach to the purpose-built, three field facility which hosts under-age national championships and was utilised for the World Masters Games in 2017.

Campbell would like to see further investment at the park and has a vision to create a baseball hub in east Auckland. He is currently lobbying council for $800,000 for the addition of three new light towers, allowing for games and practices 12 months a year.

Pair take second in Youth Champs B

ucklands Beach Yacht Club is celebrating two of its sailors, current Tanner Cup champion and skipper Blake Hinsley (Botany Downs Secondary College) and Nicholas Drummond (Macleans College).

The pair finished second overall in the RS Feva World Youth Championships.

The regatta was won by another New Zealand crew, Simon Cooke and Oscar Masfen, who took the Open Title.

Hinsley and Drummond led the Youth Championship going into the final two races, but couldn’t quite hang on and had to settle for second place, a fantastic effort in a fleet of 200 competitors from 23 nations.

In the centre is the Commodore of the Follonica Yacht Club who were hosting the Feva Worlds and he is holding Bucklands Beach Yacht Club’s burgee which was presented to him.
