‘Covid-19: the kids are fine’ By NICK KRAUSE
O
rmiston Junior College has been mentioned in an announcement regarding a third case of the deadly coronavirus Covid-19. Media have reported that the Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield confirmed that the third case was a man in Auckland in his 40s. “He has close family members who have returned to New Zealand after spending time in Iran recently,” the NZH Online reported.
Bloomfield said two schools, where some of the family have had contact, have been notified. They are Auckland Grammar and Ormiston Junior College. The case was reported to the Ministry at 6pm last Wednesday. However he said the chance of wide-spread community outbreak remains low. NZH reported: “Bloomfield said the man does not require hospitallevel care, and is in self-isolation. “The man’s family remains in self-isolation too. The man’s part-
ner, who has been unwell, is also being tested. The man himself has not travelled to Iran – but his family did. The family was on flight QR 0920 from Doha to Auckland.” The Ministry is urging anyone on that flight to contact Health Line 0800 358 5453. Katrina Casey, Deputy Secretary, Sector Enablement and Support at the Ministry of Education, told the Times that it was important to note that while family members have been confirmed with the virus, in
all cases the children have now been away from school for several days, continue to be well and show no symptoms of COVID-19 “The safety and wellbeing of all our students and staff is a priority for all in education,” Casey said. “We have been and will continue to work closely with the Ministry of Health, in this case the Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) to support the four schools that last week were identified as having connections to four students who were close contacts
of people confirmed (with) having COVID-19. “In each case the ARPHS prepared advice for principals to send to parents when the announcement was made. With the support of ARPHS, we continue to provide information and other support to the schools. The nature of information and support to schools will vary depending on how close their connection is to confirmed cases of COVID-19.” Ormiston Junior College did not respond to Times requests for comment.

The Inland Revenue Department’s (IRD) decision to no longer accept cheques for payment will make it much more difficult for a vast number of New Zealanders to manage their finances and seems to ignore the realities of modern banking, says Simeon Brown, MP for Pakuranga. “As the old saying goes there are two certainties in life – death and taxes, yet this decision by the IRD is making it very difficult for some Kiwis to comply with the latter! “Many New Zealanders,

for a lot of them can be too difficult to use and often creates concern about falling victim to scams. “It can also be impractical
because of where people live.” “So this will have a big impact on rural communities who still find the NZ postal system more reliable than their internet connection. “There is a reason that most banks have decided on long transitionary periods to move people away from in-person or postal banking to online banking. “The National Party has recently launched a nationwide petition calling on the government to reverse this decision by the
IRD and continue to allow Kiwis to manage their taxes by cheque. “One day, online banking will be the way everyone manages their finances, but the transition will take some more time. For now, cheques remain a popular and efficient way to pay the bills, with nearly 7 per cent of payments to IRD being made this way.” The petition can be signed online at www. andrewbayly.national.org. nz/cheque_petition and physical copies can be signed at Simeon’s Pakuranga office.

Row breaks out over restricted staff parking at Botany Town Centre
By FARIDA MASTER
S
taff and tenants at Botany Town Centre are upset over management’s decision to limit parking spaces to employees. From March 2, it is a first-in firstserved. If staff miss out, they must find parking off site. Claudia McNulty, an employee who works at the town centre, says that the closest parking that is free for staff is at least 1.2km away in suburban streets. Urging people who are working at Botany Town Centre to sign an online petition that has collected 3500 signatures, she says that while designated parking spaces for staff will free up extra slots for customers, “without staff there would be no revenue for the mall that has just had $78 million worth of redevelopment”. The petition reads: “For the people who are working in restaurants and Hoyts where finish times come close to, if not past, 11pm; it is not safe to be walking down the road a few kilometres to their cars. “While it is understood that parking restrictions and payments are part of Auckland life, paid parking is generally contained to the city centre and areas such as Newmarket and Ponsonby, not the likes of humble Botany. “There are plenty of reviews on Google that rave about how plentiful parking is at Botany Town

Centre. During busy periods such as Christmas and New Year’s, staff should be able to continue parking across at the Botany College as has been arranged for years to free-up parking for the valued customers. “Centre staff come from all walks of life: uni and high school students with part time jobs to serve you food or help you find a different size in that shirt you like. “They’re the lovely travel agents that help you book your holidays or the hairdresser that you see every few months to get your hair done. “They’re the obliging cleaners that point you in the direction of the shop you’ve been looking for
while cleaning up around you. “This change will impact our safety and security. “So, please, help us bring attention to this issue by signing this petition to stop paid parking at Botany Town Centre,” signed Claudia McNulty. Botany Town Centre manager Kerrie Hughes told the Times: “Customer experience is a top priority for Botany Town Centre, and this includes ease of access to parking. “Following feedback from customers and tenants on parkingrelated matters, we undertook a complete review of the current car park monitoring services and

identified changes to improve the experience for customers visiting the centre. “We are aware of the online petition. Since introducing enforcement and paid parking for our tenants and staff, we have engaged in discussions with our tenants to understand their immediate concerns. As a result we have identified an additional overflow area for tenants and staff to use if the three designated parking areas are full. ”We want to reassure customers, retailers and staff that safety is a priority. We encourage anyone who doesn’t feel safe to contact Centre Security or NZ Police
directly,” she said. In answer to that Claudia points that the overflow parking is the street behind the town centre, which is residential. As for the paid parking for staff and tenants she says, “At this stage it is a $3 flat rate, which at five days a week would be an extra $700 or so per year.” More recently, centre management have sent an updated notice that says the staff may move their cars closer after the mall closes at 6pm, or Thursday and Friday late nights at 9pm, says Claudia. “The notice mentions that there is CCTV as well as sufficient lighting on site and that staff no longer have to notify the centre if they are in on their rostered day off if they abide by the other car park rules.” Clautdia says the support they’ve had is overwhelming and she will keep the petition open for the time being, more so since residents at Armory Dr have started complaining that town centre staff have been taking up their parking space and need to find their own. As we go to press centre manager Hughes responds: “The additional overflow parking for staff and tenants is located on site between two of the designated paid parking areas at Botany Town Centre. We want to reiterate that staff, tenant and customer safety is a priority and parking on site is supported by the security measures we have in place on a daily basis.”

Ross said. He said National should return the donations or transfer the money to the Electoral Commission, RNZ reported. “I doubt the National Party knew at the time that the money was foreign – I certainly didn’t either – but now that they will have that information to hand, they need to show leadership and do the right thing.” Meanwhile the National Party, from who he is estranged, was quick to respond on Thursday. “The National Party is unaware of what Mr Ross was referring to today in Parliament and have not seen the document he referred to,” a National Party spokesperson said. “We stand by our previous statements on this matter and are confident that the court will establish the clear facts. Until that Court process is complete it is not possible for us to say more at this stage.” Ross appeared in Auckland District Court on February 25 to answer charges brought by the SFO in relation to National Party donations impropriety. He and two others each face two charges of ‘Obtaining by deception’. The charges relate to donations paid to the National Party. He and his co-defendants have denied the SFO charges.

Last month I joined 80 other MPs in supporting the Abortion Legislation Bill to advance further. In the next two weeks it’s likely abortion reform will be across the line. Every so often issues crop up in Parliament where MPs exercise “conscience votes” on matters often controversial or involving questions of morality. Parliament finished debating voluntary euthanasia just a few months ago. Now abortion law reform is on the table and we are being actively lobbied by both sides. That’s healthy in a democracy. What’s also healthy, in my view, is that we view this issue through the prism of women’s health. Right now, abortion is still a crime. There is a 1970s-inspired work around that sees the vast majority of women that have to make their hardest life decision on mental health grounds. The proposed Abortion Legislation Bill would see this issue removed from the Crimes Act and a health approach taken instead. Up to 20 weeks a doctor would be able to treat a women purely on health grounds. After 20 weeks abortion services could only be performed if two doctors reasonably believe it is clinically

This proposal is remarkable similar to how the law is implemented right now, but with one key difference: we won’t have a law on the books saying women are criminals if they want to make decisions about their own bodies. Two thirds of MPs said this law reform should become law. That seems about right to me when I consider surveys in Botany I have run lately have come back about 60/40 or 70/30 in favour. After hearing the different arguments for and against, and looking at local surveys, I intend to cast further votes in favour of modernising this outdated law. I accept there are passionate views on either side of this debate. For some, any abortion services are a moral outrage. How I vote will not please all people, but I am prochoice in this matter. I challenge other local MPs and candidates with different positions to seriously answer this question: should it ever be a crime for a person to access the health services they need? ■■ Jami-Lee Ross is MP for Botany

ndependent Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross, under parliamentary privilege, has accused the National Party of receiving foreign cash from China’s Communist Party. RNZ reported that Ross, speaking in the debating chamber last Thursday, called on National to return about $150,000 which he said he had learned originated from China. “Ross also sought to make public two flow-charts prepared by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) which he said showed the flow of money but was blocked by the Speaker due to legal concerns,” RNZ said. “These donations are linked back to China, are linked to the Chinese Communist Party and with ease entered New Zealand,” he told MPs. RNZ reported that Ross said he first learned about the origins of the donations last year after taking his own concerns to authorities. “What I learned was that large sums of money, adding up to around $150,000, coming directly out of China in Chinese yuan, over [two] successive years ended up as political party donations. “Two individuals – Shaoli Xie and Shaona Zhang – were used as conduits for the donations.” The funds eventually made their way to the National Party and that was where the money remained,

Mill Road, a major link from the eastern suburbs to Papakura and Drury running off the top end of Murphys Road, is included in major Government transport infrastructure spending. Minister of Transport and Urban Development Phil Twyford said NZ Upgrade transport investments in South Auckland will lay the foundations for a future town at Drury and represent a new way to help the city grow. “Our Government is investing $2.4 billion in roads and rail to unlock growth in South Auckland and support a new town at Drury, as well as further development at Paerata, Pukekohe and Karaka,” Twyford said.
“This includes $1.35b to build Mill Road, $371b to extend the electrified rail network to Pukekohe, $247m for new railway stations, a park and ride facility, and a bus and rail interchange at Drury, and $423m to improve State Highway 1 between Papakura and Drury South. “Instead of transport infrastructure having the catch up with housing development, we are investing in the roads and rail from the outset. “Drury will be a wellplanned community with all the jobs, facilities, retail and public spaces people want.” He said families who move there will be able to do so without needing to have a car.

says “it’s a great opportunity for art lovers”. “Art Resale Week is for preowned art needing a new home. It’s the perfect event for anyone decluttering, downsizing, restyling, or who has artwork no longer liked – or never liked! “Now’s the time to check your walls, shelves, attics, cupboards and under the bed.” Edwards says Art Resale Week is a chance for Uxbridge Arts and Culture to facilitate the trading and exchanging of art pieces. “To make this an exciting and successful event for sellers, buyers and Uxbridge, we’re looking for a broad selection of good quality art, sculpture and objects d’arte that are well presented, in good condition and sensibly priced.” Any supporting information and documentation about the artworks or artists will add value, she says, with the three price categories being: up to $1000; $1001 to $5000; and more than $5000. “Art Resale Week gives people a schedule to work towards if they’re decluttering, downsizing or having a change of style, and includes a donation to our beloved public arts and culture centre in East Auckland.” Edwards adds the event is “not for new work or for artists selling their own pieces”. For more information and to submit artworks for consideration, go to www.uxbridge.org. nz, search Art Resale Week.

New faces, fresh thinking, same great service New faces at Pat Callinan Accounting are bringing fresh thinking and progressive ideas, and Melt Louw, new owner as of last year, is excited for the future. “We have a great team in place here at 22 Picton Street, and I believe we are very well equipped to look after the broad range of clients – both current and potential – that exist on our doorstep here in East Auckland,” says Melt.
Core values Pat Callinan Accounting has been taking care of local accounting needs for nearly two decades, and has become something of an institution at the top of the village. The business is well known for straight-forward practical advice and its warm approachable style, and Melt is determined that these values will remain central as the business transitions into a new phase. “I have worked in the organisation for six years, so consider myself the bridge between past and present. “I have a deep appreciation for the strong values that have guided our business in the past, and am committed to maintaining them. “However, I see lots opportunity for the future, and have spent the last few months building up the right team to

take us there. “We had a few retirements at the back end of last year and, whilst it’s always sad to say goodbye to colleagues and friends, it does provide an exciting opportunity to assess our capabilities and challenge the way we do things.
New depths of experience and expertise Melt himself is a very experienced chartered accountant, as well as having legal qualifications in his native South Africa. He has boosted the accounting team with David, Jane and Christy, all of whom add depth, experience and specific skills to the already strong Margaret and Richard, whom clients know well. With Sharon and Pamela managing reception and admin, Melt believes they are now a heavyweight local accounting practice. “Accountancy is changing and our clients need more from us than tax returns and GST advice. “They want information and lots of it; intelligence and data on how their business is performing, advice on what software platforms to work with, forecasting models and information on the economic landscape.

“Our role is to make sure we have the right people in place to deliver it.”
Systems and processes As well as investing in people, Melt has spent time reviewing and updating the business’s internal processes and systems. “We had a lot in place but weren’t necessarily extracting all the efficiencies available from them.
“With considerable investment of time and resource over the last six months, I’m confident that we are making the most of the great systems we have, and our clients will see the benefit.” It’s exciting times for Pat Callinan Accounting (2016) Ltd. Melt is looking forward to welcoming new clients to the portfolio so if you are looking for an accountant, he’d love

Transgender talk
I applaud recent articles (New Zealand Herald, 28/2 and 0203) concerning the transgender athlete, Laurel Hubbard. The NZH presents the transgender topic in a fair and balanced manner. I have not, as yet, heard of people complaining, protesting or in any way taking the NZH to task. Therein lies an issue. The NZH, through these articles, stimulates public interest and discussion of the topic. The NZH has done what the universities of NZ should be doing, the very institutions “committed” to free expression, muzzle debate. Recently, Massey cancelled a speaking occasion called “Speak Up for Women”; part of its Feminism 2020 event. Speakers were unable to air views on transgenderism and athletic fairness. Massey University claims they are “…committed to the values of academic freedom, the freedom of speech and the freedom of expression, as values that lie at the very heart of the tradition of a university and academic inquiry”. Massey claimed that discussion of transgender sport would “hurt the vulnerable”. But has the NZH customer base experienced “health and safety” issues since the NZH articles? Or, are there “actors in bad faith” at our universities - and officials kowtowing to aggressive minority opinion? There is a public interest in such issues being aired, discussed and resolved. “Silence by threatened violence” on campuses reflects a

Stem professionals’ needed Engineering New Zealand is looking for east Auckland Stem (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) professionals to inspire the next generation and volunteer for the Wonder Project Rocket Challenge – a programme designed to get young Kiwis excited about science, technology, engineering and maths. Local schools are signed up and waiting to be partnered with a Stem professional that can enhance their learning and spread wonder to their students. Over six to eight weeks in term 2, students work with their teacher and a Wonder Project Ambassador to design, build, and launch their very own water rocket. I note your headline in the Times (February 11) OUT! (water tanks running dry in rural areas) and now realise that although the Auckland Council spouts water conservation, you should see their property Auckland Council/Auckland Transport-owned commercial property at 7 Reeves Rd, Pakuranga. For weeks now the water has run out of the ground and into the stormwater and has done so off and on for years with a few attempts by WaterCare to stop it. They have been told on more than one occasion. Added to this, since the property became council-owned, it has been a maintenance disgrace. A burntout shop has not been rebuilt but just boarded up and burns/lawns are not maintained.

Banks need looking into
The New Zealand banking industry should have been subject to an intensive, intrusive inquiry immediately after the Australian Government’s inquiry. NZ citizens are now paying the price for the lack of urgency. Now becoming apparent, NZ citizens are having their accounts closed (while out of NZ on holiday) without any ethical professional explanations apart from saving the banks money. Further, the procedures, reasons, justifications for closing individual and business profession accounts is not disclosed adequately. Basically it is intended to save the banks money by reducing or capping employee numbers and eliminating services. Small private or business customers are being targeted. There is also considerable and growing evidence that the banks are practicing what can only be interprested as selective discrimination by closing the accounts of individual customers, businesses, enterprises which have a history of contact with the African scams con fraud over the past 10 or more yeas yet tens of thousands of Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands – world citizens – were exposed. Under normal circumstances there is the opportunity to refer the matter to the NZ Banking Ombudsman but how much support will the average NZ citizen get given that the office of the Banking Ombudsman will, or already is, overwhelmed and has little effect especially for private citizens.

Howe Street pavements
Walking up Howe Street this morning (March 5), I came upon a worker again spraying the broken concrete. I spoke to the man who told me that it was he who did the initial spraying two years ago and that then, the council had run out of money. He assured me, with a smile, that the work was scheduled for August after the new budget year begins in July. I had also noticed that just after your piece appeared in the Times, the worst uneven bits of the path had had the asphalt hot mix laid. Coincidence, do you think, or did you have a hand in shaking up the council? Thanks, either way, for your interest.

What’s the deal with this virus? In Friday’s Herald is an editorial urging Kiwis to travel locally on account of this coronavirus global epidemic. In the same edition is the Finance Minister letting us all know how much money the economy loses if Chinese visitors and students are denied entry until further notice. Whose opinion do we listen to? Universities are complaining of lost revenue from Chinese students who apparently are describing sanctions as racist. Where are any priorities regarding Kiwis and their wellbeing and safety?

Our congratulations to the organisers of the Brit & Euro Classic Car Show at Lloyd Elsmore Park on Sunday. Living just across the road, this was our first time to see what was an simply amazing display of vehicles. It was a real eye-opener to see what is quite probably just a fraction of the vehicles squirrelled away in garages all over NZ and to realise the $ value tied up in them! The display was so well organised and in such a good location also making it accessible for those on mobility scooters too. It was nice to be able to chat with owners who were all keen to talk about their vehicles. Great

I took part in the March For Life march against abortion today (March 2) and was encouraged to see the turnout for the march. Lots of men, women, teenagers and children. I was also impressed with the views of the various people I talked to – doctor, engineer, sportsman etc on the value of life. Certainly very touching to know that there are very caring people in NZ! The New Conservative Party had a good number of members in the march which indicated that they do place a value on life including life still in the womb. My stand is that if any political party has no regard for those who do not have a voice, then that party will not be getting my vote, and quite a few of my friends feel the same way. One thing is obvious from the bills cooked up in Parliament, that most parliamentarians can’t see very far ahead. As it is, NZ’s abortion rates are in the tens of thousands annually – at least 13,000 yearly - and to allow late-term abortions is almost turning it into genocide! Can’t the current parliamentarians see the need for a ‘next generation’ to continue in NZ? If the next generation is reduced, who will be running the country as well as forking out for their superannuation?

Fire risk warning F
ire and Emergency is asking Aucklanders to take extra care after recent fires on lifestyle blocks on the outskirts of the city. Region manager Ron Devlin says people should avoid activities which can cause a spark like using a chainsaw, mowing lawns, burning rubbish and driving vehicles with hot exhausts through long dry grass - especially during the afternoons, the hottest hours of the day. “Three fires started on lifestyle blocks around Karaka and Clevedon in the last couple of weeks from sparks caused by machinery work,” he said. The dryness for this length of time is unusual for Auckland and people are urged to take extra caution. While there has been a little bit of rain, it hasn’t been enough to change the fire risk in Auckland. “Some of our biggest fires happen in autumn when people mistakenly think the fire risk is less and stop being so careful. There

is still a total fire ban which means no fires are permitted. “We’ll need a lot of rain to reduce the fire risk and the rain that is forecast is not enough. “The dry weather is also putting pressure on Auckland’s water supply - especially those on tank water - and we’d rather not have to use this to put out a completely avoidable fire.” He urges residents wait until conditions become less dangerous and the fire ban is lifted before burning rubbish and
doing machinery work on lifestyle blocks. “We are constantly looking at the conditions and will lift the fire ban as soon as we can. Until then, there shouldn’t be any reason to light a fire,” Devlin said. “Please be vigilant. Talk to your family, neighbours, and friends about how not to start fires and if you see smoke call 111.” ■■ Go to www.checkitsalright.nz to find more information on how to reduce the risk of fire.

ational Party leader Simon Bridges has criticised the government’s response to Covid-19, saying the economic response to the outbreak has been sub-par. He said businesses deserve a signal on where the Budget 2020 is headed so they have confidence the government has a plan if things get worse. Bridges told RNZ’s Morning Report last Wednesday that middle income earners deserve tax relief as the outbreak persists. “I think there’s a very strong case for tax relief for middle income earners, those households I’ve said were struggling.” Bridges wouldn’t say whether he would consider benefit increases to help lowincome families in case of an economic downturn. Bridges said Finance Minister Grant Robertson hasn’t been giving people a clear enough view of the economic outlook. “At least, they should be sig-

Landlords – ever thought of yourself as a criminal? U
nder the proposed changes outlined in the Residential Tenancy Amendment Bill, currently before the Social Services and Community Select Committee, landlords now have a much higher chance of being charged with criminal offences regarding their rental properties, says Sharon Cullwick, executive officer of the New Zealand Property Investors’ Federation (NZPIF). Cullwick points out that along with the removal of the 90-day no cause evictions, another major concern for landlords is the high number of unlawful acts which have been included in the Amendment Bill. Prior to the current Coalition Government, Cullwick says, the Residential Tenancy Act listed 24 unlawful acts against landlords.
However new proposals in the Bill have dramatically increased this to 60 unlawful acts, and 24 criminal offences and Pecuniary Penalties (up to $50,000) whereas only 17 are listed against tenants. Also, the powers of the Tenancy Services Compliance and Investigations Team will be increased. This team will now have improvement notices and enforcement undertakings included in their jurisdiction. “For example, something as minor as failing to supply the tenant with a change of your address could result in a $750 fine,” Cullwick says. “Something as simple as not replying to a tenant in a ‘reasonable timeframe’ regarding any minor changes they would like to make to the property could
result in a $1500 penalty. “On the New Zealand Parliament website under a section on the Residential Tenancies Bill it says that the Bill aims to balance the rights and obligations of tenants and landlords. “As a rental property provider, if you feel that this balance is not being achieved and you are concerned about this increased level of penalties to which you will now be exposed, even though you have the best of intentions of providing a satisfactory home for your tenants, you are encouraged to make a submission to the Social Services and Community Committee before the March 25 2020 deadline.” ■■ Details for this can be found at www.nzpif.org.nz.

0800 SHADES / 0800 742 337 99% UV Protection now recovered the fastest. “That said, there are still parts of Auckland where values are lower than a year ago and these tend to be pricier suburbs – such as Parnell, Mission Bay, St Heliers, Campbells Bay, and Takapuna. The fastest-moving suburbs in the year to January 2020, with areas such as Glen Eden, Otahuhu, and Northpark, all seeing property sell in less than 21 days (median). Otara is up 6.5 per cent over the past year, Northpark 3.8 per cent, and Glen Eden just short of 3 per cent. Overall, the general
momentum across Auckland looks set to continue to push up prices for the foreseeable future. “However, the minidownturn over 2018-19 did little (if anything) to improve housing affordability, while at the same time, there is a large amount of new supply coming onto the market now and over the next year or two,” says Davidson. “For these reasons, it looks unlikely that this upswing in the Auckland property market will be as big or as long-lasting as previous episodes.”

Auckland’s residential property market has clearly turned a corner in the past three to six months, says CoreLogic senior property economist Kelvin Davidson. After seeing average property values fall by about 3 per cent from peak ($1,055,831 in March 2018) to trough ($1,025,193 in August 2019), the rebound has now seen them rise to a new high of $1,057,556 in February. “This has come on the back of increased buyer confidence, rising sales activity, falling listings and falling days to sell,” says Davidson. “In short, more buyers are competing for a smaller pool of available properties for sale, which is creating a sense of urgency and supporting upwards pressure on prices. “The previous falls in values were largely concentrated in Auckland City and the North Shore, with more gentle declines in Rodney, Manukau, and Waitakere. “The flipside is that Auckland City and the North Shore have

NRL marketing simply the best
Have a go at walking netball Jim Birchall
By JIM BIRCHALL
T
he NRL has launched its new season with a new video which features a spectacular re-working of the Tina Turner classic Simply the best. It got me thinking how much better the NRL does at promoting their game than Super Rugby does in the video. The nostalgia of grand final yesteryear blends nicely with a modern take on the game, while nodding its head to indigenous culture and their peoples contribution to the game. The video isn’t without its detractors however. Comments have arisen in the Australian media from disgruntled country folk who don’t feel the ad includes them and focuses too much on the glitz and glamour of the Sydney clubs. I couldn’t actually remember if Super Rugby had put out a promo video for this year’s competition but after a cursory look on YouTube, I came across a bland, awkward video of players interviewing their peers (for the NZ version) bereft of any hype or throwbacks, essential to induce misty-eyed sentiment in the rugby public.
The NRL have used a re-working of a 1980s campaign featuring Tina Turner for their 2020 launch. Photo smh.com.au
Super Rugby crowds were down six per cent for the 2019 season. Current numbers are hard to come by, perhaps closely guarded by club marketing people. However, you only have to turn on a game to witness empty stadiums across NZ, including in a traditional rugby strongholds of Christchurch and Wellington. Adding to this is an unpopular conference system, boring scrum re-sets, hysteria over ‘high’ tackles and the ridiculous implementation of ‘All Blacks minutes’ to players within or on the periphery (ex St Kents players Brayden Ennor, Dalton Papalii et al) of the All Blacks,
it’s fair to assume the game at the second tier is in trouble. The increasing commercialisation of the All Blacks and the development of an ‘us versus them’ mentality when it comes to Super teams is concerning. Coaches are reported to be exasperated at the restrictions placed on star players and fans are being robbed of seeing the best up close, all to preserve NZR’s meal ticket. Perhaps new CEO Mark Robinson can remedy the disconnect generated by his money-hungry predecessor Steve Tew. The competition also starts way too early, slap bang in the
middle of the cricket season. Eden Park ground staff have the unenviable task of transforming the goofy-shaped home of sport to be rugby compliant from week to week. The NRL on the other hand has a later start in March. I don’t believe Super Rugby gets the jump on it as the NZR boffins would have you believe. After doing a quick, unscientific poll, it seems people actually prefer that NRL starts six weeks later. By then everyone seems to have had enough of rugby’s encroachment into their beach time and welcome the arrival of a game that showcases great athletes, close results and the ball being in play for more than 90 seconds at a time. It’s not like the NRL has a monopoly either. However much they are paying their marketing people, it isn’t enough. Competing against AFL, A-League, Union, and the increasing popularity of combat sports, they have performed Jesus-level miracles to cement second spot in viewership and squeeze maximum juice from a sport with a minor international profile.

Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre is pleased to offer the latest craze in netball, Walking Netball! There is a free trial session on Wednesday March 25 at 6:30 pm. No need to register - just turn up on the evening. “Go on, grab a friend and have a go at walking netball,” said spokesperson Amanda Dyason. “Walking Netball is a slower version of the game we all love; it is netball, but at a walking pace.” It originated in England about five years ago and now people all over the world have started playing Walking Netball for the fun, laughter and camaraderie the social session brings, as much as the health benefits on offer. Walking Netball has been designed so that anyone can play it regardless of age or fitness level. From those who have dropped out of the sport they love due to serious injury, to those who believed they had hung up their netball trainers many years ago, Walking Netball really is for everyone. The rules are the same as traditional netball with just a few exceptions. She said the obvious one is that everyone must be walking; a player must always have one foot in contact with the court, so no jumping or running is possible. An extra step is allowed which reduces the impact of stopping and improves the momentum of the game. Players are also given 4 seconds with the ball. “Walking Netball sessions are designed to be fun and flexible and largely follow the same format as any other netball session,” Dyason. “You don’t need any special kit to take part, just clothes that you feel comfortable exercising in, suitable footwear and a drink bottle. This great version of the game is for anyone who would like to get a bit fitter or come and meet new friends and have a laugh!” Alternatively register a team or as an individual for the 6-week introductory season. ■■ When: Wednesdays 10am or Thursdays from 6:30pm ■■ Where: Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre, Lloyd Elsmore Park, 451 Pakuranga Road ■■ Cost: $210 per team or $40 individual registration ■■ For more information and to register see our website www.hpnc.org.nz

Blues go marching on
A
three-game Super Rugby winning streak culminating in a 24-15 victory against the dangerous Hurricanes in Wellington has confirmed the Blues’ longawaited improvement. The latest, following wins in South Africa against the Bulls and powerful Stormers, demonstrated real character within a strong tackling performance which would have warmed the cockles of defence coach Tana Umaga’s heart. Especially pleasing was the 13 tackles made by Akira Ioane in his first start of the season following the heroics of Hoskins Sotutu. Looking much fitter and hungrier than he did in last year’s Mitre 10 for Auckland, Ioane looked as though he wants to realise his enormous potential by increasing his workload. He’s a naturally-talented attacker but his laziness and failure to bend his back hurt his All Black prospects last year. Sotutu’s outstanding form appears to have motivated Ioane into becoming the best he can be. Along with electric wing Mark Telea he scored one of the Blues three tries, the third a penalty try which sealed the Hurricanes’ fate when Jordie Barrett was sin-binned for a premedicated knock-on. With prop Tyrel Lomax red-

carded after 47 minutes and Vaea Fifita also given a yellow, the Hurricanes indiscipline cost them dearly. However there was still much to like about the Blues’ resolve in containing the hosts’ renowned backline attack which had run riot in previous games. The lineout still needs work but the scrum is strong and halfback Sam Knox and first-five Otere Black
are providing the swift pass and tactical direction that the team has craved for too long. TJ Faiane is consistently outstanding and did a splendid job in containing menacing juggernaut Ngani Laumape. With Tom Robinson, Blake Gibson, Dalton Papalii and Tony Lamborn joining Ioane and Sotutu, there is genuine loose forward depth.
With Joe Marchant and Rieko Ioane capable of playing wing or centre, Telea and fullback Perofeta complete an outstanding backline which will welcome Beauden Barrett on April 11 for the return match against the Hurricanes. Four wins from six games is a proud record after kicking off the season with a narrow loss to the Chiefs. The Chiefs share four wins

Agnew’s Angle from five games with the Crusaders, who were flat in their 24-20 win against the Reds. In contrast, the Chiefs were devastating in thrashing the hapless Waratahs 51-14 with speedy halfback Brad Weber leading the charge by scoring two of their seven tries. Shaun Stevenson, Sean Wainui and Solomon Alaimalo also scored to emphasise the potency of their backline with champion flanker Lachlan Boshier notching the other. The impressive Sharks lead the South African conference with five wins from six games and the Brumbies head the Australians with four from five. With star fullback David Havili having had stomach surgery, the Crusaders have lost some of their sting and are no longer the force they were when they had All Blacks Kieran Read, Sam Whitelock, Matt Todd, Owen Franks and Ryan Crotty. However they should still remain a threat in what is shaping as a very even competition between the top eight teams, led by the Sharks on 20 points and the still dangerous Hurricanes eighth on 13. ■■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer
