Cops put foot down, bust car thieves C

ounties Manukau East Police apprehended two youths after a vehicle stolen from Highland Park was spotted by officers in Howick this morning. The police Eagle helicopter assisted in the apprehension after the vehicle failed to stop for police and road spikes were deployed to bring the situation to a safe conclusion, Inspector Chris Barry, Area Prevention Manager for Counties Manukau East Police, told the Times. A 15-year-old has been arrested and will appear in the Manukau Youth Court. A 14-year-old is being dealt with by Counties Manukau East Police Youth Aid Services. Earlier the same morning Counties Manukau East Police recovered

a stolen vehicle that was spotted at a local petrol station. “Identifying features of the car didn’t match and further examination revealed the true identity of the car which had undergone significant modifications to conceal the fact it had been stolen,” Inspector Barry said. Enquiries are continuing to identify the offenders responsible for the theft of the vehicle. During the early hours of Monday (September 9), Counties Manukau East Police spotted another car at a local fast food outlet which turned out to be stolen. Police followed the car and apprehended the two occupants at a residential address.

A 36-year-old female is appearing at the Manukau District Court charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and a 30-year-old male is appearing on a charge of unlawfully getting into a vehicle. On Monday afternoon, the owner of a car parked outside a Howick gym saw a group of young males breaking into his car. The males ran off followed by the car owner who immediately phoned police on 111. Although the owner lost sight of the offenders, police arrived and located one of the suspects and took him into custody. He has been referred to Counties Manukau East Police Youth Aid Services. “Police greatly appreciate the assistance of the public in appre-

hending vehicle crime and burglary offenders and are asking the community to be vigilant and phone 111 immediately if they observe suspicious activity,” Inspector Barry said. He emphasised that many vehiclerelated crimes could be prevented if people removed all valuables including wallets and any electronic accessories and locked their cars securely. “Pre-2005 cars that don’t have an ignition immobiliser should be secured using a steering wheel lock to reduce the risk of it being stolen,” he said. “These can be purchased at automotive retailers for much less than the cost of an insurance excess or replacing the vehicle’s ignition.” ➤ Turn to Page 3

■ Howick Little Theatre, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga ■ 7th-28th September 2019 ■ Directed by Penelope Keegan ■ By Erina Smythe

“F

irst Tea, then War” could almost be the title of Howick Little Theatre’s latest play by renowned British playwright, Alan Ayckbourn. A black comedy, cum morality play, Ayckbourn again turns the ordinary into the extraordinary as he brilliantly tackles the idea of a local middle-class, but somehow broken community, taking the law into its own hands, consumed by dogma. Penelope Keegan is an instinctive and astute director, and in her capable hands the actors throughout have embraced their characters “ordinariness” and brought each to life, no mean feat. These are the sort of people we might meet on a daily basis; a cross-section of our society in fact. Anna Baird and Matthew van den Berg, the devoutly Christian siblings, the catalysts for the whole situation, both give superb performances, from the impecable Britishness to their finely-tuned intense sibling relationship. They work

seamlessly together. Peter Webster’s blustery, stolid Midlander, Matthew Cousin’s rather tragic neighbour loving his wife in spite of everything and Linda Kerfoot, the gossip, all contribute greatly to the truth of the piece. Madeleine Potter gives a very sincere performance as the young badly-treated wife, her bullying husband played with bravado by Zac Clarke. Victoria Jowers-Wilding gave us the femme fatale with absolute relish. The set by Beck Longbottom was ideal in its simplicity with the clever pink rug, and motifs absolutely perfect. Costumes, lighting and sound as usual were spot-on. However on Sunday afternoon the front door bell seemed to have a life of it’s own. Alan Ayckbourn throughout his long career has always had his finger firmly on the pulse of the nation and again in one of his darkest comedies to date he has certainly kept it there. Very relevant.

ew Zealanders have the right to go about their lives free from harm. That’s one reason why there’s pressure on all governments to keep crime rates low and to help Kiwis feel safe and be safe. When I’m out on doorsteps talking to residents in our Botany community, law and order issues are one of the most common subjects people want to discuss. People want to be able to park their vehicle in their driveway or on the road without it being broken into or stolen. They want to be able to be at home with their family without fearing someone may break in and steal their possessions. And they absolutely do not want to become the victim of a violent crime. Local residents are well served

MP for Botany

by our outstanding Counties Manukau East Police, but the number of people living in this area is growing and we need more Police on our streets to keep us all safe. The current Government came to power promising an extra 1800 police over three years and so far it’s delivered 1524. It recently announced the deployment of 78 new Police Constables around New Zealand, including 19 to our local Counties Manukau area. That’s a good start but we need even more new police. NZ Police are under tremendous pressure in their day to day duties, and add to that the need to run the gun buy-back properly in the wake of the March 15 Christchurch mosque shootings. Our local police put themselves

Jami-Lee Ross

in harm’s way each and every day. The least we can do is to ensure they have the training and equipment they need to help them deal with a wide range of situations. We must also ensure they’re supported by a sufficient number of fellow frontline officers. That means investing more money in recruiting extra police, accelerating the process of training them at the Royal NZ Police College, and deploying them to areas where they’re most needed. We must hold the Government to account on its promises when it comes to law and order. Community safety should always be a priority for our elected representatives.

Local companies raise more than $20k at Brave the Shave The annual ‘Brave the Shave’ was a massive success again this year, with a total of $22,981.51 being raised by United Industries Limited in partnership with Fletchers. Staff were asked to shave their heads or beards to raise money and awareness for cancer research.

United Industries’ Ben Hammond co-ordinated the event, and said that “It was really great having the challenge aspect this year and Fletcher doing it with us, I am keen to do this again with Fletcher with a new bunch of staff” “Our Staff also had a lot of fun, we had a large bbq, friends,

family&kids, and company directors were all in attendance.” Ben also wanted to acknowledge Cut Above Academy who provided 15 trainee hair dressers who volunteered to shave people heads& beards at the United Steel, Harris Road event on August 30.

Cook Street crash By JIM BIRCHALL

T

wo people were hospitalised after an accident on Cook St on Sunday morning. In a statement received by the

Times, police advised they were notified of a single vehicle crash on Cook Street in the early hours of Sunday morning. A member of the public reported the incident at 12.50am where it

appeared the car had collided with a wall. The two occupants were taken to Middlemore Hospital, though their injuries not thought to be serious. Police enquiries into the crash are continuing.

Police bust car thieves ➤➤From Page 1 Meanwhile, Counties Manukau East Police have received several reports of vehicle break-ins around the Howick Village area over recent months. Police are currently liaising with the council around whether further measures could be taken to reduce vehicle crime in the area, such as installing CCTV cameras. In general, police find that shopping areas and town centres are often targets for vehicle crime. “These crimes are opportunistic in nature and can be prevented by vehicle owners taking simple precautionary measures,” Inspector Barry said. “Always ensure your vehicle is locked and secure and never leave valuables in your vehicle. “While these steps seem straightforward, unfortunately police are finding most of these cases could have been prevented and vehicles that were broken into contained valuables

that were stolen by the offender. We also encourage the community to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police at the time by phoning 111 so we can respond as soon as possible.” Inspector Barry also offered comment following an apparent incident at Muzza’s Pies on Howick Village main street yesterday afternoon. The owners told the Times two teens with faces covered stole pies and drinks before running off while the owners were near the counter. On Monday a person attempted to steal the charity box there but dropped it on their way out. They had not called police. “Police urge anyone who is the victim of a crime or who witnesses offending taking place to report it to police immediately by phoning 111,” Inspector Barry said. “We also ask anyone who witnesses suspicious activity to contact

police immediately. Police are happy to visit store owners who are victims of crime to provide prevention advice and tips around how they can reduce their risk of being targeted by offenders. “In general, we also encourage store owners to consider preventative measures such as CCTV cameras. “Any store owners who have concerns are asked to contact their local police station. If store owners would prefer to speak to an officer in another language, we have a range of Ethnic liaison officers who are fluent in a number of different languages and are available to provide assistance.” ■■ Information regarding vehicle-related offending or people receiving or offering to sell stolen property should be reported to their local Police Station. Alternatively information can be reported anonymously on Crimestoppers 0800 555-111.

any people take in boarders either for company or to help pay the bills. But is it a rental or flatting or boarding situation? A flatmate is someone who shares a house with others, contributing to expenses and chores; at least one flatmate is also tenant i.e. their name is on the tenancy agreement. A tenant is a person who rents a property from a landlord, and has a written tenancy agreement signed by both the landlord and the tenant. Tenants have rights and obligations under the Residential Tenancies Act 1986. A boarder is someone who rents a room in a private home. [There are different requirements for boarding houses of six or more boarders.] Having a boarder in your home is similar to having a flatmate. You should look at your family situation and work and social life, and think about what you would need to provide for the boarder. For example, your boarder would probably be sharing

Ask yourself things like; whether you want the boarder to be male or female, a student, a child or adult; how long would you expect the boarder to stay for; whether you will provide meals; whether you will offer room-cleaning and bed-making; whether you will do washing and ironing, etc. You will need to decide whether the rent will include telephone, power and food, or whether you will require the boarder to pay for these separately. A Boarding Agreement identifying the particular details from these considerations is recommended for the benefit of both you and your boarder, because it will provide clarity to prevent disputes, or, if necessary, help any dispute process. The agreement will include things such as the rental amount and frequency, the bond and its repayment, and notice period. There is a template at www. tenancy.govt.nz/assets/Formstemplates/Flat-house-sharingagreement.pdf If you do have a dispute that

you cannot resolve by discussion with your boarder you can apply to the Disputes Tribunal. Another option is mediation. You will need to comply with any Inland Revenue Department regulations regarding tax liability. This information is available at www.ird.govt.nz You should check insurance, both your home owner insurance policy, and also your contents policy. By preparing carefully you can then look to enjoy the benefits of having a boarder in your home. Feel free to contact your local CAB if you need further advice. ■■ This Solutions Column has been compiled by Graeme, and is a regular editorial from the Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau. Big win for East FM The winning East FM Quiz team is all smiles after a great win at last Thursday’s Howick Santa Parade Quiz Night at Bosuns Bar at the Good Home in Howick. All proceeds will go to the Howick Santa Parade. A very good time was had by all in the name of the Howick Santa Parade. Photo supplied

All 49 international games will be broadcast live during the tournament’s six weeks, from the opening match on Photo supplied Friday, September 20.

Barrel Inn rolls out friendly Rugby World Cup The Barrel Inn will be the Howick venue to watch all the action of Rugby World Cup 2019, with every test match in the tournament televised live at the popular pub and eatery in Cook Street. And if you fancy being in a crowd to catch the excitement of rugby’s premier four-yearly global tournament, instead of viewing from the couch at home, then the Barrel Inn is the place to be. Clive Thomson, the manager at the Barrel Inn, says all 48 international games will be broadcast live during the tournament’s six weeks, from the opening match on Friday, September 20, when Rugby World Cup 2019 host nation Japan tackles Russia in Pool A. Thomson is expecting a big crowd the next day, when New Zealand faces up to old rivals South Africa in their first Pool B test. “We always have great crowds for All Blacks matches and this one against the

Springboks has added interest being the World Cup and with the sides evenly matched,” Thomson says. “We invite everyone to come to the Barrel Inn and enjoy our well-known, welcoming hospitality, top-quality beverages and delicious meals. “It’s going to be a very exciting and competitive Rugby World Cup, with many countries in with a chance of winning the William Webb Ellis Cup on November 2. “So come and relax and absorb the atmosphere at the Barrel Inn as we cheer on the All Blacks, hopefully to their fourth Rugby World Cup tournament victory and their third in a row.”

Murphy’s the law on Pukekohe track Editor Nick Krause has tumbled from a plane in a static parachute jump, been white water rafting, skied some dodgy terrain, scuba dived and goes bush a lot but he wasn’t really prepared for a Hot Lap.

Greg Murphy (left) and editor Nick Krause. The GoPro footage is on the Times Facebook page.

My senses were annihilated. They couldn’t register what he was doing with this (pretty fancy and very quick) street car. I tried to look cool. I failed. The video doesn’t lie. Murph chats with me at various points in this Hot Lap. Like you would at 50km/h around town. At one point as he’s accelerating way too much toward another bend, he chirps up that we just hit 188 km/h. My brain explodes. Can you ask a race car driver to take it easy? I didn’t. Is the car supposed to shudder violently and the tyres screech like they’re going to pop right off the rims at every bend? Murph wasn’t even phased. He even had his hands off the wheel a couple of times as he explained something I couldn’t quite comprehend. I wasn’t listening.

You’re invited to our Dream Cruise Evening! Join us over drinks and nibbles to hear about Dream Cruises the newest cruise line to come to New Zealand waters, offering Auckland return itineraries. We have guest speaker Aaron Eilers from Dream Cruises, who will provide first-hand knowledge on the Explorer Dream ship and all there is to know about what the Dream experience is like. Our Dream Cruise Evening will take place on Wednesday, 18 September at 7pm, Sutton & Turner Travel Associates, 16 Moore St, Howick, Auckland. If you would like to attend, please RSVP by Monday 16th September by calling us on 0800 224 694 or us email us at suttonandturner@travelassociates.co.nz Hope to see you there! cars drivers Fabian Coulthard and Jamie Whincup. I digress. Murph (as I like to call him – and I did) set up the GoPro cam on the dash, posed for an incar photo with me then headed out onto the race track proper. Dear Lord. I think I said that a few times. I may have sworn too. Several times. Looking back at the GoPro footage I’m amazed at how many times I looked genuinely horrified. Murph is all coolness and control, hitting bends and bumps. I’m talking about those black and white raised strips bordering the track that resemble rumble strips but are the size of judder bars. He didn’t blink as our car flew over them and screeched in protest as he accelerated hard into another tight bend.

Go Pink for a day Businesses and workplaces around New Zealand are turning Pink for a Day in October, raising much-needed funds for breast cancer research, education and patient support. More than 600 workplaces, schools and community groups took part last year. Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s chief executive Evangelia Henderson urges people to get involved again this year - in any way they like to acknowledge Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “It’s a great way to have some fun while focusing on wellbeing in the workplace,” says Mrs Henderson. “You’ll receive a pack of breast health information

Murphy makes racing round the Pukekohe Park Raceway look so easy! A four-time winner of the Bathurst 1000, he was on hand at the track on August 29 for an ITM Auckland Supersprint Drive Day – set up for sponsors, media and other guests. The Drive Day was a prelude to the return of Supercars to Pukekohe Park Raceway on September 13-15 for the ITM Auckland SuperSprint. It featured hot laps for those keen to experience the track with a professional driver. The Hot Laps were in spanking new street cars representing the current Supercars rivals – a McLaughlin Mustang which was driven by two-time World Touring Car Champion, Paul Radisich and the Commodore VXR by Murphy, aka the King of Pukekohe. The oldest law firm in Howick, James Gavin Donovan has seen many a Howick resident pass through its doors, as with any rite of passage. James always wanted to be a lawyer. He was interested in the way the legal system operated but more importantly, it was the daily interaction with people that he enjoyed and assisting clients to solve their problems. And now, many years on, it is the interaction with locals that keeps him going. After so many years of being immersed in legal matters, James has become well-versed in the many nuances of his profession and knows exactly which loopholes to avoid. Citing family law as something of a specialty, the proudly local Cockle Bay resident says he derives great satisfaction from resolving and overcoming what most perceive as difficult or insurmountable. “People need to be able to rely on the law as a method of resolving Page the 1 difficulties they may have with property, family

ver been blindsided on a blind date? I have. Years ago, I was asked to pull up my shirt by a young woman who declared that she ‘usually only went out with guys with sixpacks’. I replied that, had I known this was a prerequisite, I would have stopped off at a bottle store on my way over. Needless to say, the evening went downhill from there. By contrast, when taking my long-time partner to Silo Theatre’s The Blind Date Project for our anniversary recently, I was a little more confident of what to expect – in some respects at least. Set in an off-beat karaoke bar, this show sees its central character, Anna (Natalie Medlock) on a blind date with various guest stars. During the performance, both actors are fed lines or situations

On the night we attended Anna’s blind date was a nervous, bookish teacher, played by Danielle Cormack – former star of TV’s Wentworth. As the drinks flowed, and the two bonded, it became apparent that, despite her demeanour, Anna’s date had spent more time behind ‘bars’ than one might expect. While both seemed to shoot from the hip more commonly than Clint Eastwood, often enough it was hard to tell where the script stopped and improvisation began, leaving the audience to speculate. As an added bonus, this type of freestyle theatre ensures no two shows will ever be identical, so those who just can’t get enough of ‘people watching’ (or a theatre version of ‘car-crash TV’) can return night after night for fresh experiences. A tribute to the unpredictability and (at times) outright insanity of blind dates, this show will leave some nostalgic for their single days and others grateful that such disastrous dates are behind them – ironically, as one actually would expect from an encounter in a karaoke bar, it’s sure to strike a chord (or discord) with almost anyone. ■■ The Blind Date Project wraps on September 21 – see qtheatre. co.nz/blind-date-project for tickets or more information.

Upcoming local body elections In a recent article the New Zealand Herald published (August 31) a rating of all Auckland City Councillors. Unfortunately both Sharon Stewart and Paul Young, who represent our area, came in equal last with one other councillor with a rating of 30 per cent. That has to be a worry and it got me thinking. Perhaps the Times should conduct a similar rating for the current Local Board Members. This could help electors decide whether to re elect current members or try someone else.

I wanted to send a big thank you to all the generous people who donated to Daffodil Day last week. Unfortunately cancer has impacted so many but it was heart-warming to see the community come together to help support those who need it. We had over 100 volunteers out in the Botany area and they did an amazing job giving out more than 3000 daffodils over Friday and Saturday. Thank you for giving up your time to help. Climate positives

Why all this uproar about climate? Climates of the world have always changed and always will. As for global warming and CO2 heating of the planet, there are equal and opposite views. Research would indicate that we are in a cooling period with intermittent warm spots. CO2 emitted by human activity is small at 400p/million and has a minuscule effect on any planet warming. What we are not being told by the media and vested scientific interests, is that CO2 is a necessary ingredient for healthy plant growth. In our agricultural country, this should ring some bells! More CO2 the better for our agricultural industry. We now have

school children being indoctrinated in this ‘climate change religion’ and scientists scared of losing their job or financial grants if they do not toe the political line. It has become a religion just like other man-made religions. It’s the old story of man trying to control that which he never can and never will. Basically it is not his to control. There are far more destructive human events about to unfold on planet earth which few are prepared for and climate change is not one of them, but that is another story.

Ian George Howick

Reduce salaries of parliamentarians It is a good idea to reduce the salaries of the members of parliament to one third or half. That would help to not only reduce the tax burden but also reduce society’s problems such as suicide, cause it will work towards a fair and good society.

I want to commend the people who look after the gardens around Howick Village. They always look very attractive and right now there is a beautiful display of Iceland poppies along the walkway between Picton St and Howick Library. Thank you to everyone involved.

Kids helping kids! I

n a world where there is often great focus on difference dividing us, local Howick children teamed up with their families and the local business community to make a difference. The second annual cession|community Quiz Night was recently held at the Depot in Lloyd Elsmore Park as an allage event with a difference – the organisers were children. Children from cession|community church decided to run a Quiz Night Fundraiser to raise money to support Seuly, a girl from Bangladesh, who they got to know through a child sponsorship overseen by Tearfund. They created the questions, came up with a plan for food and with some help from their adults obtained sponsorships for prizes and a silent auction. When the big night came the kids bravely presented the event, each taking responsibility for their areas of expertise as they asked the questions and provided the answers. “He worked on those questions for three weeks!”, exclaimed Sarah, proud mother of Elijah who created the Literature questions that stumped many of the adults. The children worked with event organiser Kristen Jones over a period of two months to plan the details of the event including making the flyers and advertising posters as well as bravely fronting up to sponsors. Raegan, aged 12, recalls, “We were at the movies at the

Elijah Johnson Quiz Master for Photo supplied Literature questions.

Monterey over the holidays and came up with the idea to ask for sponsorship. The manager was very kind in the way she responded and I was excited that we had prizes for our Quiz Night.” Local businesses rallied around the event with the help of cession community trust administrator Debbie Hyland. Bike Barn provided some great cycling products that attracted auction bids from both kids and adults. Lush provided an amazing bath bomb pack that was won by two sisters pooling their

pocket money. One of the parent organisers won a much needed package from local naturopath Caitlyn Ward. Prizes from Book Barn, Wild Wheat and SASS Nails were snapped up at the auction. The children greeted guests as they arrived, sold food and drinks and MCed the event. For many it was their first time being involved in something like this. Organiser Kristen Jones reflected on the quiz night, “I couldn’t be prouder of our kids the way they are learning to focus on the needs of others. They raised nearly $550 in a single evening and they showed courage, compassion and creativity in the way they approached it. It’s all part of creating a kinder community and we’re so delighted with the way local families, the community and businesses were able to partner to achieve something together.” Local resident and chairperson of the Tearfund Board, Gary Agnew, attended the event for the second year running. “Our family loves attending this local event together and it’s great from a Tearfund perspective to see the way Kiwi children are actively getting involved in child sponsorship and partnering with the wider community including local businesses.” The kids are already planning for next year’s event!

Triathlete Thorpe picks up gold Howick local Ainsley Thorpe has picked up gold and bronze medals in Europe and Canada as part of the New Zealand Triathlon team. The 20-year-old is born and bred in east Auckland and has been competing in triathlons for almost five years. She competed in her first local triathlon when she was 16. She was recently involved as part of a New Zealand relay team at an ITU event in Edmonton on July 22. The team, comprising Ainsley, Tayler Reid, Nicole Van der

Kay, Hayden Wilde, won gold, giving Ainsley her first win on the international stage. She repeated the alchemy again in Lausanne on September 2 as part of a different relay team. To cap it off she also won an individual bronze in Antwerp on June 24. Ainsley became involved with the endurance sport after following her brother. “When starting triathlon I didn’t know much about the sport I really only got into it because of my brother and always copied what he did.

I always wanted to go to the Olympics from a young age and I loved watching Valerie Adams and seeing her win gold” “Obviously I knew I wasn’t built for shot-put but it was the gold medal that inspired me.” The lure of the Tokyo is omnipresent for Ainsley, “my main focus for next year is getting selected for the Olympics, a few World Series and a few World Cup races at the beginning of the year will be crucial to put myself in the best possible position (for selection).”

Auckland market remains quiet T

he national housing market remained firm in August, following on from the steady July result. According to the CoreLogic QV House Price Index, average property values rose by 0.2 per cent from July to August, lifting the annual growth rate a touch from 2.2 per cent to 2.3 per cent. A good way to characterise the August figures is, ‘business as usual’, and with sales activity still subdued (albeit showing slightly more encouraging signs of a pickup) and affordability stretched, a solid but unspectacular result for values is no surprise. The market in Auckland remains quiet in terms of activity, with neither sellers nor buyers generally in any rush to strike a deal. Of course, there are always some people who have to sell their property for family or job reasons and they’re likely to be feeling a bit of downwards price pressure. Indeed, although Auckland average property values were flat from July to August, the latest figure ($1,025,193) was still -2.3 per cent (or $23,981) lower than a year earlier. Within the Auckland region, Franklin (0.3 per cent annual

change in average property values in August) is the only area yet to see any real downwards price pressure, although the falls to date in Papakura and Waitakere have also only been modest. The greater weakness is still concentrated in Auckland City (-2.3 per cent in year to August) and North Shore (-3.4 per cent) – although there were at least better results for the Auckland City Central and North Shore Coastal sub-areas in August. CoreLogic senior property economist Kelvin Davidson said, “It’s largely been another steady-as-she-goes month for the housing market in August. The sluggishness of Auckland is weighing on the national picture, but away from our largest city,

there are still many areas seeing consistent growth in average property values. Although the Reserve Bank delivered a shock 0.5 per cent official cash rate cut on August 7, the fact that fixed mortgage rates didn’t really budge meant that the immediate impulse for property values was always likely to be fairly muted.” Around the remaining of the main centres, values ticked along in August. Dunedin is still a consistently strong performer, with growth in average property values of 11.9 per cent in the year to August. The average value in Dunedin now stands at $465,457, almost $166,000 higher than four years ago. Wellington continues to climb steadily higher too (growth of 8.3 per cent in the year to August), while Hamilton and Tauranga are churning away in the background with consistent annual growth in values of about 5 per cent. In regards to Christchurch, Davidson said “The ‘mood music’ around the garden city seems to have become a bit more optimistic in recent months, although it’s yet to show through clearly in the hard data – values only edged up by 0.4 per cent in the year to August.”

All Blacks are near perfect T

he All Blacks were near perfection in their 92-7 thrashing of under strength Tonga at Hamilton last Saturday - but South Africa will pose a far greater threat in their first pool game of the 2019 Rugby World Cup. However the Tongan game was a massive confidence booster for Ben Smith and Ryan Crotty who have returned from injury and played beautifully, Smith reminding us that he was, and may still be, the best fullback in the world. Two tries was just reward for his brilliance on a day the All Blacks scored 14, with classy left wing George Bridge grabbing four as the back three prospered through the quicksilver hands of Crotty and Anton Lienert-Brown. It wasn’t that long ago that it seemed the selectors regarded Sonny Bill Williams and Jack Goodhue as their best centre combination before they got injured. He and Goodhue are not alone with Richie Mo’unga, Rieko Ioane, Sam Cane and Dane Coles not risked against Tonga. All should be fit for World Cup action although Ioane, still only 22 and regarded the world’s best wing last year, is unlikely to supplant Bridge in the starting 15 against the Springboks. With Beauden and Jordie Barrett, Crotty, Lienert-Brown, Smith and Bridge all capable of playing multiple positions, the All Blacks are well served for

If Mo’unga’s shoulder is not fully recovered, Barrett and Smith could remain at firstfive and fullback for the Boks match, allowing the electrifying Sevu Reece to remain on the right wing. Certainly having won the Rugby Championship, the powerful Boks will present a much tougher forward pack and won’t allow the All Black backs anywhere near the same latitude they enjoyed against Tonga. Nevertheless it was pleasing to see loosies Kieran Read, Ardie Savea and Matt Todd thrive on the strong platform set by the tight forwards with Nepo Laulala and Patrick Tuipuloto justifying their promotion to the starting pack. Laulala has the mobility the deposed Owen Franks lacked and Tuipulotu is thriving on his new diet with bonecrunching tackles. The speedy Savea has been outstanding all season and captain Read is back to his best and leading by example. With PJ Perenara and

Sideline abuse never okay

Beauden Barrett content to provide quick service to their outside backs, Barrett’s replacement Josh Ioane enjoyed a spectacular start to his test career when from his second half kickoff, Bridge took the ball on the full to score in 7.4 seconds. Despite taking a few heavy tackles, the young Highlander also completed a splendid debut by providing the perfect grubber for another Bridge try and demonstrated a fast pair of hands. Meanwhile having announced her arrival on the world tennis scene by beating Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki on her way to the ASB women’s final, Auckland fans would have delighted in Bianca Andreescu’s 6-3, 7-5 United States Open triumph against Serena Williams. The 19-year-old Canadian has every shot in the book including a blistering forehand and is a firm believer in attack being the best means of defence. Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer

Over the weekend during the finals of a kids’ soccer tournament, my nineyear-old son Cailean was subjected to verbal abuse from two parents of a member of the opposing team. We believe this was an attempt to intimidate my Cailean Hamilton. son and the other players on his team so that their son’s team could win. In spite of my husband’s best efforts (as both father and team coach) to raise the young Fencibles team’s (Fencibles United Hamilton 10th grade rep team) morale, the damage had already been done and the boys were so badly scared by these “adults’” outbursts that they didn’t play as they usually did and lost. After the game, the father “apologised” but in such a way as to actually attack my son again. Normally, I would let it go as yet another display of poor parental sportsmanship, having witnessed this too many times before. However, my son is doing speeches for his school work and had already produced a heartfelt speech outlining the effects of negative sideline behaviour. We asked him to record it and I uploaded it to YouTube so that others (especially those parents who feel that their child’s team must win at all costs) could see it. I thought it might be something you would be interested in sharing with your readers. https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=CevdaYnO4ig&t=19s Katie Hamilton Sunnyhills
