A
spate of car break-ins in Howick has brought a rebuke from police about people leaving valuables in their cars. Chris Barry, Counties Manukau East Area Prevention Manager told the Times police are disappointed and concerned that “many people in the community” are not taking responsibility for vehicle crime prevention. “Many of the crimes that are being reported could be avoided if people removed valuables and locked their cars securely,” he said. “When a thief breaks into a vehicle and steals something valuable it creates incentive for them to return and keep offending in the area. "We have seen some significant spates of thefts from vehicles
recently including three offences in the vicinity of Fencible Drive last week.” In an unrelated incident police arrested a 25-year-old female and have charged her with unlawful taking and burglary after a vehicle was reported stolen from Cook Street, Howick, over the weekend. “The disappointing aspect is that many of the vehicle offences could be prevented if car owners removed all valuables, ensured their car was secure and used a steering lock or alarm on older model vehicles,” Barry said. This is aggravated by the fact that offenders will often return to areas they know to be “easy targets” to reoffend. As a result of vehicle offending,
victims have had to replace cars and possessions, cancel bank cards and driver licences, repair damaged windows and ignitions and make police reports and insurance claims. “Victims of vehicle crime experience significant cost and inconvenience so we want to prevent this crime being from committed or enabled through poor security,” Barry said. “Police are working hard to prevent victimisation and we have increased patrols in crime locations and are following leads to apprehend offenders who have committed offences. However we need the community’s help to keep them safe.” Tradies such as builders and electricians need to utilise secure
parking or have a quality car alarm fitted, he said. “It is also essential that tradies lock their vehicles securely when working on jobs or sites as their vehicles are a magnet for offenders,” said Barry. Police are asking the public to be vigilant and take the time to increase security at their property and keep a lookout for any suspicious activity. “If someone sees someone behaving suspiciously they should phone 111 immediately.” ■ Information regarding vehicle related offending or people receiving or offering to sell stolen property should be reported to their local Police Station. Alternatively information can be reported anonymously on Crimestoppers 0800 555-111.

controversial sculpture erected to mark the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage has been vandalised for the second time in three months, with a pillager making off with an arm from the artwork. The crime places considerable strain on council resources due to its $55,000 replacement cost. The sculpture named ‘Kid Justice’ by artist Erin Forsyth, had a foot damaged in March and was subjected to three weeks repair work. Kid Justice rests on a plinth which has been designed to be a permanent foundation on which to install a changing collection of art that responds to both contemporary and historical themes. The artwork was met with derision from some quarters upon unveiling in December 2018, but is expected to remain at the site until at least 2022.
Far from ‘armless: Crawford Reserve’s ‘Kid Justice ‘ has had an arm removed. Ogiti syookued
When approached for comment, Auckland Council art collection manager Peter Tilley said “We are aware that Kid Justice has been damaged and are investigating the cause of the damage.
“In the meantime, we are working with our maintenance team to repair the artwork as soon as possible.” The sculpture has been removed from the reserve as of August 20.

Bridges won’t do deal with Greens

N
ational Party leader Simon Bridges has slapped down a potential alliance with the Greens and derided the growing number of people on unemployment benefit. Bridges shared his views at a public meeting chaired by National MP for Hunua Andrew Bayly, which was held at Maraetai Bowling Club recently. The leader of the opposition held forum with the about 120 locals who braved a wet and wintery east Auckland night. Bridges started by re-enforcing party policy on business growth and confidence, the proposed establishment of a national cancer agency, the government’s neglect of dairy farmers, red tape in the construction and building industries (which he took almost a libertarian stance of suggesting “less government”, and the downward trend in international student arrivals. After hearing from local figures in the education and business sectors, the floor was opened to questions. Bridges took a pro stance on immigration when quizzed, but emphasised putting New Zealanders first when it came to employment opportunities. He conceded unemployment figures were at their lowest (3.9

per cent down from 4.2 per cent in March) but tempered that by stating “there are now 15,500 more people on the dole “owing to a net migration rate of 58,400 people as of February this year”. He also said he was a big believer that those who “can work, should work”. The local hot-button topic of a new high school was raised and awakened the floor. Residents bemoaned their current predicament of having to send their children to high school in Papakura, due to its low decile status. The presence of a couple of detractors kept the debate lively. When asked if his party would ever consider forming an alliance with the Green party, Bridge’s comically suggested National were not a party interested in promoting “trendy, woke, cool causes” and referred to the Green’s “watermelon sta-

tus” being “green on the outside, and red on the inside”. Bridges emphasised National’s core ethos of investing in infrastructure and education by stating he wanted New Zealand children “to be the best in the world” and passed on the new school inquiry to Bayly who could not give a start date for the proposed, but unconfirmed project. The questioning ended with clarification sought on repair and replacement of Siberia Hill’s notoriously dangerous road seal and passing lane. Bill Cashmore, deputy mayor of Auckland, and Franklin ward representative, offered assurance that the project was “top of the list” which was met by general scepticism by the crowd, with one humorous quip of “you said that last year” coming from the backbenches.

Winning team at International Aerobics Championship By Farida Master Howick locals Abbey Bolton, Neela Patel and Madi Taylor couldn’t believe their ears when their team clinched second place out of 17 countries participating at the 30th Annual International Aerobics Championship in the US. The ecstatic 14-yearolds were part of a team of five. Participating at an international level in the US – hosted by the Association of National Aerobics Championship (ANAC) in Phoenix Arizona – was a first for all of them. And to make podium was a huge achievement. The girls competed in individual routines and achieved fantastic results in a category featuring more than 60 athletes, with three of the local contestants placing in the top half of the competition.

and has been sketching and painting most of his adult life. As a school boy at intermediate school age he attended the Elam School of Art on Saturdays. The view of Picton Street from the Wellington Street/
Picton Street roundabout Picton Street is always a busy village scene with one of the few crimson and cream Howick and Eastern buses coming up the street. evelopment could be coming for the old Howick Library after all. In the latest agenda from the Howick Local Board, the site of the former Howick library, located at 16 Fencible Drive is “under review for future uses according to Auckland Council’s development arm Panuku. The old Howick library has sat derelict for the best part of a decade and has recently been closed to former community group key holders the Howick Village Association, which was using the dilapidated building for storage of stalls and associated equipment for the Howick Market. The building is structurally

unsafe and has had past issues with asbestos. It is derelict inside and showing signs of significant water damage and the air is think with a pungent odour. The property is not available for leasing purposes. Panuku stated in the agenda that there is “Potential to explore (sic) idea of developing hybrid commercial/commu-
nity space, including residential housing outcomes” and added “further engagement with the board is dependent on AT (Auckland Transport) confirming transport infrastructure requirements for the property’. Howick Local Board Chairman David Collings told the Times his preferred option
would be for the building to be administered by a trust or community partnership and HE was confident the responsibility of building maintenance would be taken up by said trust. Panuku also noted in the agenda that the property at 34 Moore Street Howick (the old council chambers) will stay empty and unused for the time being. Panuku responded to a presentation from the Howick Local Board by resolving “to retain the property for 12 months to allow further use investigations”. “Panuku is continuing to work with the council’s departments and engage with the board as part of the rationalisation process.”

Man arrested outside mosque The police arrest of a wanted man outside a Pakuranga mosque last Friday initially caused alarm about a possible shooter. Media initially reported shots had been fired outside Masjid Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq just before 2pm at the Cortina Place mosque. Inspector Wendy Spiller,
Counties Manukau Police, very swiftly issued a statement on Friday saying “that at no point were shots fired during this arrest”. “Any other reporting of the sort is scaremongering and adds unnecessary alarm to members of our community,” she said. The arrest was not related
to the mosque. Police, with the assistance of the Armed Offenders Squad (AOS), arrested a 40-year-old man. The man had a warrant for his arrest for wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm relating to an incident in New Lynn from July 25.

Balancing motorists and public transport L
ast week I launched a petition calling on Auckland Transport (AT) to remove the T2/Bus lane on Pakuranga Road and restore its use to everyday motorists. Many of you have been in touch since to share your views and it seems the vast majority of you agree with this stance. I launched the petition in large part because members of the community were complaining about the lane and now the goal is to encourage as many people as we can to sign. I want to be clear that my issue is not with finding ways to improve the patronage on public transport; I fully support this goal. My concern all along has been with a poorly thought through solution, that in its current form will make no positive difference. This is a concern that I, along with hundreds of local residents, tried to share with AT at a public meeting earlier this year. Most of those who attended did not oppose the idea of improving public transport but knew from experience that the proposed T2/Bus lane would not achieve this aim.
Dedicated busways are only effective when they are built alongside existing roads, instead of replacing them. The fact is that over 90 per cent of people in Pakuranga travelling to work do so by private vehicle, and while I support the goal of reducing that number, it is not going to happen without real and efficient solutions. This is why I support the AMETI/Eastern Busway project. I’m disappointed that Lagoon Drive will lose a lane, but overall the project will help buses run efficiently and, thus, encourage more people to use them. The Reeves Road Flyover is another important piece to this puzzle, however it has recently become apparent that Auckland Transport will be delaying this project from a completion date of 2022, to one now of 2025. I am strongly of the view that the key to unlocking the congestion issues around Pakuranga is not one or the other when it comes to roads or public transport, but a careful balance between the two. It’s precisely why the Eastern Busway and Reeves Road Flyover are so important, with
the Flyover complementing the Busway by allowing it to run smoothly underneath without competing traffic flows. The current council and government are far too focused on just the one transport solution, public transport and don’t seem to care about the majority of people who use their own vehicles. We all know transport is not

hen life gets blurry, adjust your focus. For those ‘easties’ who have always wanted to try their hand at photo-graphy, or those amateur shutterbugs who already have armed themselves with an SLR, the Howick Photographic Society (HPS) is a great place to meet other photophiles and immerse yourself into a creative hub. The incorporated society boasts 75 paid up members and has been snapping pictures of the local environment and capturing the zeitgeist of east Auckland for the past 63 years. Its core role is to teach the art of photography, educating its members on the pros and cons of image creation, post-processing techniques and everything in between. Recently, club members entered the Bowron Landscape Projected Digital Images Competition. This is a competition for sets of four landscape digitally projected images, one image per club member, to be submitted by member clubs of the Photographic Society of New Zealand (PSNZ). MP: Time to ban cockle gathering A
popular east Auckland beach should be closed to shellfish gathering so its cockle population can recover from over-harvesting. That’s the view of Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross, who says the step needs to be taken at Cockle Bay Beach to stop cockles from being wiped out. Ross is working with a group of Cockle Bay residents on the issue and recently directed written and oral questions on it to Fisheries Minister Stuart Nash in Parliament. “At least three New Zealand beaches are currently closed entirely that have a larger cockle population than Cockle Bay Beach does,” said Ross. “A 50-cockle seasonal limit is in place at the beach but there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence that limit is being ignored by many people. “Cockle Bay Beach has one of the lowest numbers of cockles of all the beaches that have shellfish restrictions in place.” Local residents publicly expressed concern earlier this year that the beach may one day run out of cockles. The seasonal limit of 50 cockles per person per day is in place at the beach between May 1 and September 30, but there’s no limit to how many people can harvest cockles there each day. Ross asked Nash in Parliament

why Cockle Bay Beach is only subject to a seasonal ban when three other beaches with higher cockle densities are closed. He also asked whether Nash was confident the seasonal ban is sufficient to protect its cockle fishery. Nash said that unlike the other beaches, the cockle population at Cockle Bay Beach does not show a downward trend. “However, if the scientific evidence does begin to show such a downward trend, then we will take the appropriate sustainability measures,” he said. In a written answer to one of Mr Ross’s questions, Nash said scientific surveys found the number
Howick College and Cockle Bay School will come together to host the 28th annual Koanga Festival. The festival, on Friday, August 30, was first established to strengthen and maintain the importance of kaupapa Maori in the Eastern suburbs and celebrates tikanga Maori through kapa haka performance. Both schools are excited by the opportunity to strengthen and build lasting ties with their community and local iwi, and to showcase the talents of their own kapa haka groups alongside more than forty other groups from primary, intermediate and high schools in the Howick and Pakuranga area.
of cockles at Cockle Bay Beach fell between 2011 and 2016, but then rose in 2018. Ross says he questions the reliability of that survey, given the cockle population had been steadily declining prior to last year. After he raised the issue in Parliament, Nash offered to arrange a briefing for him and the group of Cockle Bay residents with officials from the Ministry of Fisheries. That briefing will take place in east Auckland at the end of this month. Ross says he will keep pressure on the Government to ensure Cockle Bay Beach’s cockle population is protected.
The festival, which represents hours of dedicated practice and hard work, will run across three venues: the Howick College gymnasium, the Bill Dimery Performing Arts Centre (Howick College) and the Cockle Bay School Hall. Parents, friends and whanau are warmly invited to come along and support their tamariki. The opening powhiri will be held at 10am in the main Howick College gymnasium followed by the first performances on each of the stages at 11am. The day ends at 3pm. Entry is by koha and there will be food and drink for sale on site. Eftpos will also be available.

Another crash on Aviemore Drive A
second serious accident in just over a week happened again on Aviemore Drive. On Monday night a vehicle travelling north on Aviemore Drive struck a parked car and flipped on to its side. The driver was uninjured, but was in some distress. He had apparently not been drinking, but witnesses suggested he had been inattentive. A witness to the crash, Liz Li, was
waiting to turn left out of a nearby business when she saw a Volvo clip a parked car and flip on its side. The young male driver was going “not too fast” but was “not focused on the road”. Li left the incident soon after giving her details, as she had a baby in the car. Fiona He, who owns a business opposite the accident scene, went outside when she heard an employee’s car had been damaged by the
colliding vehicle. He praised members of the public for comforting the driver. “It’s so nice to see people helping out people in shock.” The last accident was a fatality on August 9. Police have confirmed 37-year-old Mark John Siviter died at the scene on Aviemore Drive and another person was admitted to Middlemore Hospital with serious injuries. The Serious Crash Unit investigation is ongoing.
Monday’s crash is the second in a little over a week.

Ashton finds place as young artist in Switzerland When Saint Kentigern College year 13 student and aspiring actor Sam Ashton stumbled online across a young artist programme in Geneva, Switzerland, run by the prestigious Juilliard School, he set his sights on gaining a place. The Juilliard School in New York is a world leader in performing arts education. Their mission is to provide the highest calibre of artistic education for gifted musicians, dancers, and actors from around the world so that they may achieve their fullest potential as artists, leaders, and global citizens.’ What followed was an exhaustive process of submissions detailing Sam’s abilities as a thespian. Audition tapes included
three-and-a-half-hour class in the morning which touched on different aspects of drama such as improvisation, stage-fighting and team-building exercises. The afternoon was devoted to preparing monologues, and in-depth script analysis which was a new experience for Sam, as he says “I had never done that kind of scrutiny of a text to that extent before and it is something that I will regularly put into my acting work from now on.” At times the experience seemed surreal. “Here I am, in Switzerland, being taught by teachers from Juilliard itself and professional actors alike. I am the luckiest person in the world!”

Likewise, stirring the young Chinese in HK into civil unrest against their Motherland China and egging them on and funding the protestors with US financial aid is so unprincipled, unethical and immoral. The US used to despise the cheap labour and child labour in the Asian countries, China being one of them. However the US is one of the first countries to capitalise on the ‘cheap’ labour from China and the Asian countries to fatten the purses of the business people in the US. Don’t forget that if not for China a lot of their ‘branded labels’ would not have made it on the world market. The US is throwing the biggest tantrum ever for fear of being overtaken by China. Kicking up a worldwide stink doesn’t do much to impress others that you are a world leader, rather that you are a loser. In fact it actually puts people off whereas taking on the role of a peacemaker bringing reconciliation makes a world of difference. The question is, would the US be able to take on such a role?

Mayoral race gets dirty
It looks like a two horse race for mayor and things have got off to a fiery start. It is not surprising things got heated but both need to read the Defamation Act 1992. Keep it clean guys and may the best man win. Campaign on your strengths, not on the weakness of your opponent.

Stop messing with China’s sovereignty A video of the young Hong Kong protesters singing the US national anthem was sent to me. So why is the US involved in the HK protest against China? I am not surprised that the US is interfering in the politics of another country and it’s about time that they stop this interference. Take a look at the civil unrest in Venezuela and Guatemala, let alone in the Middle East after the US poked

My impractical suggestion is that all of our Auckland Transport employees as well as their spouses (and politicians) be required to only use public transport Monday to Friday all weather, all hours, for a full year. This way they would receive real
honest feedback on how their transport initiatives are working. Public Transport needs to be either convenient (and reliable) or real cheap to make people use it. Catching trains to the city for work and back from the Panmure station is great — when they have enough trains on and no hiccups. Parking is terrible — it needs a free multi-level car park.

Flex your numeric muscles for Matific games The popular maths competition, the Matific games is gearing up to return for the third year from August 13-15 and is set to be bigger than ever with even more schools due to compete across Australia and New Zealand. Thousands of pupils in years K–6 will battle it out to showcase their maths skills using Matific’s suite of online maths resources, earning points for themselves as individuals, their classes and their schools. Last year New Zealand students outsmarted those from Australia with seven schools finishing in the top ten. The top place as well as the second and third place for the 2018 Games was also awarded to NZ schools with Mission Heights Primary School taking second place. With the prize pool set at $25,000 in cash and prizes to be awarded to winning schools, classrooms and students this year, the Australian schools competing are keen to flex their numerical muscle to beat their Kiwi counterparts this year. ■ More letters page 15

OCR cut ill-considered, unscrupulous The latest cut in the official cash rate (OCR) to 1 per cent is ill-considered. How can this rate be lower than inflation at 1.5 per cent? What must savers who need this income do? And they still have to pay tax on this small income. Households and the young should be encouraged to save in bank deposits and instruments such as the Kiwi Saver with some exposure to bonds. This cut is a complete disincentive. Instead, (Reserve Bank Governor) Adrian Orr wants us to buy more shares (and houses) in a risky and overvalued stock market. And the effect of the cut makes foreign currencies more expensive – the NZD immediately dropped 2 per cent against the AUD. So our imports and cost of oil will be more expensive. It makes no sense to me.

unevenness and have been told it meets specifications. All I can say is the specifications must be sadly lacking if traffic is “forced “ to change lanes to avoid the unevenness caused by the road surface slumping. The speed limit of 60 km cannot be maintained with a loaded trailer or truck or bus in the LH lane. Please, Auckland City Council get this dangerous matter it fixed.

Keeping up with the Times The expected and taken-forgranted regular delivery of the Howick and Pakuranga Times seems now to be a thing of the past, so it is pleasing to see the pop-up baskets and trays with current copies available in local businesses and libraries. Great move. How much information is contained in just one edition - the life and times of our neck of the woods in all its diversity, outrage, hilarity and awesomeness is so brightly presented. Who knew so much goes on around us. A nod to the many advertisers too - they help support the essential spirit of community a newspaper provides. Please keep reporting.
Travelling along Chapel road between the BP service station and Kilkenny Drive in the left-hand lane has become an experience not to be savoured due to the unevenness of the left-hand tyre tracks. I travel along there frequently Marin Burgess with a large heavily loaded trailer and now resort to travelling out in ■■ EDITOR’S NOTE: We are the right-hand lane because of the extremely concerned and frusnumber of times I have nearly lost trated with continuing reports of non-delivery. Please help us resolve my load due to the unevenness. I have noticed trucks and buses this by contacting Ovato Residenall resort to the RH lane for the tial Distribution with your details at same reason. Supporting KidzFirst with their Jammies for June Appeal When the Middlemore Foundation – the support Foundation for KidzFirst and South Auckland Health – approached our Lions Club for help to collect 40,000 pairs of pyjamas for those kids in need, we came up with the plan to promote this with our “Stuff a Campervan with Jammies” campaign. Member Clayton had a big campervan and a quick approach to the people who control that parking space at the Botany Town Centre provided us with a great central collection place. Support from our local
Howick & Pakuranga Times got us a good write-up and when District Governor Wendy found out she said – “send it out to the clubs in the district”. For the two days in June we set up camp in the Botany Town Carpark and over these days collected 245 pairs of jammies – not only from the general public but with great support from other clubs. Many thanks to Remuera, Pukekohe, PakurangaPanmure and Eden Epsom who dropped off big bags of jammies. Also thanks to Kamo Club who couriered a bag full to us.
The Bills currently before our New Zealand Parliament are some of the most serious, when it comes to life and death. Often sold on emotive cases, the Bill to take abortion out of the Crimes Act means that those who perform abortions are no longer able to be held accountable. It also means vulnerable people in the womb of their mother are in great danger. Likewise, when it comes to David Seymour’s Bill, it also is dealing in death. We as a country need to find life-giving solutions and not be swayed into thinking that killing is the answer. Often these Bills are a foot in the door, to an absolute landslide of killing...as with Roe versus Wade (this 1973 US Supreme Court case affirmed that access to safe and legal abortion is a constitutional right). The extent of death through abortion far exceeds death by any other means, i.e. cancer, road accidents, smoking and even natural disasters. We need to protect, nurture and grow New Zealanders and, at the end of their days, we need to treat them with respect and give them the best palliative care money can buy. It is encouraging to see that politicians are now wanting to increase care for those with cancer. Our Prime Minister cares for children. Hopefully she knows they originate in the womb - and need every protection from then on.

FLAT BUSH OFFICE
Howick Brass are in the process of forming an academy band and various brass ensembles. The Howick Brass teachers have experience from professional orchestras. As well as ensemble activities, including performing together with the students, they also participate in research and development projects at the academy. We offer free lessons and can arrange instrument hire for new players without access to instruments. The main instruments are cornet/trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, baritone and tuba, although students may also choose to specialise in certain period instruments. The academy has a senior band that has won the NZ C grade title on three occasions finishing 1st in 2018 and second at the 2019 national contest. Alternative teaching models and methods are trialled alongside traditional tuition. Workshops and projects challenge both students and teachers to succeed in an ever changing music industry. Lessons are Wednesday night 6pm to 7pm at the Howick Band Room, Howick Domain, 90R Wellington Street, Howick.

Changes worked wonders Agnew’s Angle
F
ive player changes and a much better attitude reaped its reward when the All Blacks avenged their 47-26 Perth rugby defeat with a 36-0 whitewash of the Wallabies at Eden Park last Saturday night. In doing so they maintained their grip on the prized Bledisloe Cup which head coach Steve Hansen rates second only to the Webb Ellis Cup, the prize for winning the World Cup. Whether they can retain that trophy in Tokyo remains a moot point given the improvement made by South Africa, Wales, England, Ireland and Australia. But it was easily their best performance of a jitterey Rugby Championship and a much needed confidence boost. Lock Patrick Tuipulotu and prop Nepo Laulala added grunt to the forward pack. highlighted by a sevenman scrum twice shunting the Wallabies backwards when Dane Coles was sinbinned for a stupid offence. It was easily the powerful Tuipulotu’s best game of the season, having disappointed earlier in the Rugby Championship won by the much improved Springboks. Having been promoted at the expense of Rieko Ioane and Ben Smith, workaholic wings George Bridge and Sevu Reece booked their
tickets to Tokyo with outstanding performances, Bridge setting up two tries with sharp breaks and scoring one himself. Reece is a speedy crackerjack who punches way above his weight and could star at the World Cup in much the same way Nehe Milner-Skudder did in 2015. With Sonny Bill Williams running hard and straight and combining nicely in the centres with the excellent Anton Lienert-Brown, the backline prospered from the improved platform set by the forwards and the slick services of Aaron Smith and Richie Mo’unga. Thankfully, selectors Steve Hansen, Ian Foster and Grant Fox have ignored calls from some critics to return Beauden Barrett to firstfive after Mo’unga failed to deliver in the Perth test his brilliant Super Rugby form for the Crusaders. What the naysayers failed to take into account was that in that test, Barrett was first receiver 23 times from fullback, the same as Mo’unga, behind an outclassed pack that failed to deliver quality ball. Barrett has consistently performed well at fullback and remains most dangerous when he strikes out wide where he has more space to utilise his speed. He is an exceptional tal-

Saint Kentigern College’s 1st XV is through to the Auckland 1A final with a great win over old rivals Sacred Heart on Saturday winning 29-15 in front of a huge crowd. St Kents lead from start to finish and showed some clinical rugby, with two tries to captain Cameron Church and some accurate kicking from Jona Mataiciwa securing the win. St Kents will take on Kings College in the final at Eden Park on Saturday at 3pm. Saint Kentigern’s Tiann Tauakipulu punches through the Sacred Heart line on Saturday backed up by Will Bason. ent but so is Mo’unga who has been a major contributor to the Crusaders three consecutive Super Rugby titles. Hopefully the shoulder injury he sustained last Saturday will heal quickly, as does that suffered by champion lock Brodie Retallick in the 16-all draw against new Rugby Championship winners South Africa. In retaining the Bledisloe Cup in his 100th test as head coach, the laconic Hansen will have been delighted with the leadership shown by No 8 and captain Kieran Read whose form made a mockery of those critics who claimed he was a spent force. Along with lock Sam Whitelock and fellow loosies Sam Cane and Ardie Savea, Read’s defence was superb. He doesn’t make the breaks he once did but still contributes to lineouts and kick-offs and still has a good draw and pass. The fearless Cane’s return after a broken neck has been remarkable and what the team loses in the lineout with Savea’s promotion to No 6, it gains in sharpening the attack. He and Coles are the team’s best attacking forwards although the latter needs to control his temper to ensure the All Blacks keep 15 men on the park. ■ Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer
