More million dollar state homes built

lmost $30 million of state houses were built in the Howick Local Board area in 2018/2019. Figures obtained by the Times from Kainga Ora – formerly Housing NZ – under the Official Information Act (OIA) show 38 units were built in 2018/2019 in the local board area which includes Pakuranga, Howick, Botany, Flat Bush and East Tamaki. In total these cost $29.49m. Kainga Ora said the spreadsheet “shows the new state houses in the …Howick Local Board area with the associated costs. Note this excludes buy-ins – houses that have been lived in previously.” The Crown agency would not reveal the addresses. “Details of the property addresses have been withheld under section 9(2)(a) of the OIA to protect the privacy of our tenants,” Kainga Ora said. The Times did ask the agency for figures in the Pohutukawa Coast area too and was provided with broader Franklin Local Board statistics entitled Pukekohe which the Times is excluding due to potential confusion. Kainga Ora does state though: “There are 1005 state house units in the Franklin and Howick Local Board areas with a combined book value of $579.5 million.” Meanwhile Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown said the purchase of million-dollar state houses last year is public money badly spent. Confirmation from the Minister for Housing that her department bought five properties in Howick last year for nearly $1m each should anger hard-working taxpayers, he said. “The Government bought five properties in Nelson Street last year at a cost of almost $1m each. Why

the Government is spending up large on premium homes for their state housing portfolio is beyond me, and Kiwis shouldn’t have their hard-earned tax dollars spent so carelessly.” Brown acknowledged that everyone needed a roof over their heads and that many would like to live in million-dollar homes, but he believed the Government should be spending the money more effectively. “This money could have been used to buy more houses at a cheaper price elsewhere or used to develop Housing New Zealand land into many more properties for those in need,” said Brown. “The Pakuranga electorate is home to countless New Zealanders who have worked incredibly hard to save enough money to buy homes in these suburbs. “There are hundreds of thousands of Kiwis working hard to scrape together enough money to buy their own home, with budgets much lower than these million dollar homes.” He said just like families saving for their first home, the Government should be prudent with its resources to get the best bang for the taxpayers buck. “This once again shows that this Government has no plan on Housing. The Government came to office with a plan to build 100,000 houses over 10 years and has failed to deliver on this promise and is instead resorting to buying up houses on the open market,” Brown said. “New Zealand needs real solutions to fix our housing problems, such as fixing the Resource Management Act and supporting first home buyers, ssues which National will not be afraid to tackle if we win Government later this year.”

Historical Village turns 40 T

he Howick Historical Village is turning 40. The Howick and Districts Historical Society will celebrate four decades since the opening of the Howick Historical Village in 1980 with a series of themed events and activities. Society president Marin Burgess says an afternoon tea for all members, supporters and volunteers who have helped out so generously over the past forty years is planned along with a massive ‘Live

Day’ on March 15 to which the public are invited. A photo montage of how the village buildings looked before, and as they arrived – as well as how many arrived in the dead of night escorted by keen volunteers to ensure no damage occurred - will be on show in the cottages. There are now more than 35 buildings in the village which remains true to the original plans drawn up by the society with assistance from Manukau City’s Mayor of the time, Sir Lloyd Elsmore.

Burgess says the Howick Historical Village is now recognised as a respected living history museum in the tourism and education arenas of Auckland City. “This success is clearly a result of much hard work, support and encouragement from many people. Old library not required by AT By JIM BIRCHALL

T

he future of the site occupied by the old Howick library is uncertain after Auckland Transport (AT) advised they have no plans for the land parcel at 16 Fencible Drive. The library has sat unoccupied since 2011.Over that period it was used as a makeshift storage area for local market stall holders and has recently been closed to former community group key holders the Howick Village Association. The building is structurally unsafe and has had past issues with asbestos. It is derelict inside and showing signs of significant water damage and the air is thick with a pungent odour. Subsequently, The property has not been available for leasing purposes. Auckland Council’s development

arm Panuku stated in August 2019 that the “Potential to explore (sic) idea of developing hybrid commercial/community space, including residential housing outcomes” and added “further engagement with the board is dependent on AT (Auckland Transport) confirming transport infrastructure requirements for the property’. Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown had pushed for resolution on the matter prior to Christmas. However, in a letter dated 6 January of this year from AT Chief executive Shane Ellison to Mr Brown, Ellison stated AT has now concluded they have no use for the building and/or surrounding area. “Panuku (previously Auckland Council Property Limited) have managed this property since the establishment of Auckland Council. The property has been part

of Auckland Council’s property ‘rationalisation’ process since 2011 the aim of which is to decide if council should retain the property, or if it is suitable for sale. Part of this process involves discussion and integration of planning with Council Controlled Organisations. Since 2011, Auckland

Responses to English petition By JIM BIRCHALL The Times has been overwhelmed by responses to Gayleen Mackareth’s petition to make English an official language of New Zealand (December 19). The tone of most emails received from east Auckland residents was one of general disbelief that English does not hold official status. Many people were of the opinion English should be belatedly recognised, whilst others felt such action would be waste of taxpayers’ money. Several views were expressed that could be considered xenophobic. One reader wrote in to say they were “astounded to learn that English is no longer classified as an official language in New Zealand. I recall the Labour Government of the day granting official status to Maori and to Sign languages, but to declassify English which has been the official language since independence is unacceptable”. Another believes the Treaty of Waitangi “allows English to live alongside Maori and to learn from each other. In my opinion that constitutes that Te Reo and English are official languages (legally)”. Some people were unhappy with the prominence of Te Reo in modern society. “I am actually quite annoyed at the way the Maori language

is displayed before the English language on most official and Health Dept. publications. Also some Govt departments are now only using Maori names. Before the Colonists there was no written Maori language. It is totally unnecessary and irritating for TV presenters to keep using Maori in their everyday broadcasts.” “It disturbs me that current political efforts wants’ everyone to speak Maori and allows the teaching of that language to use it surreptitiously without translation or explanation. I am aware that the Maori language is very important to the Maori people and if other races wish to learn it then that’s their ambition. But in a complex world of races and languages where would Maori stand?” Others suggested Te Reo is not useful in a society dominated by immigrants from Asia, while some believe it makes better sense to promote English to a trading giant

such as China. “I am not trying to be a racist but cannot believe that Maori language would be beneficial to New Zealand’s trading efforts for a population that is made up of many migrants, of which the Chinese-speaking immigrants are quickly growing in numbers. We see Chinese newspapers, Chinese retail outlets, Chinese labelling of retail and professional occupations and we do not see this coming from the Maori population. I see Chinese applying themselves to learning English, so it must become an Official language.” “When the PC brigade brought in Maori as an official language (which I believe was a stupid move and which causes no end of problems and misunderstandings), it never dawned on me, or probably anyone else, that English was not an official language” A local resident tempered that English borrowed heavily from other languages and sees no reason to alter the status quo. “To begin with we should recognise that modern English is itself a mish-mash of numerous older languages such as Old English, Norse, Old French and the like, which has then been added to constantly over several centuries. So the idea that we need to italicise these words in text to protect the purity of English is nonsense”.

need land near Howick, Auckland Transport maintained its interest in 16 Fencible Drive. The most recent consideration was about whether bus network changes related to the Airport to Botany project will require supporting infrastructure that would need this land. At this time, the business case for the Airport to Botany project is near completion and although not finalised, Auckland Transport is able to confirm that the property is not required. This is the final project requiring consideration and Auckland Transport has advised Panuku that it does not have a transport requirement for this land.” So for the moment the building will remain, with the site ripe with development potential. ■■ What do you think should be done with the land? Metlifecare receives consent for golf course village Earthworks are underway for ‘Fairway Gardens’, Metlifecare’s newest retirement village development in Botany Downs. The resource consent covers all stages of the $180 million development, with the first 48 premium apartments expected to be completed mid-2021. Metlifecare CEO Glen Sowry says he is excited by the opportunity to build New Zealand’s first retirement village to be located on a golf course. “It’s a great milestone to break ground on what we believe will be a village unlike any other with unobstructed access to an outstanding golf course and real community integration that promotes wellness and social interaction,” he said. The site on Pakuranga Golf Course on the corner of Botany and Cascades Roads will deliver more than 200 independent and serviced apartments and 40 care beds on completion with no hard boundaries separating the village green from the 18-hole golf course. Careful design and planning ensures sweeping views over the greens and down the fairways, he said. The announcement of the name, Fairway Gardens, follows a well-attended community information event held at the golf course in mid-2019. Metlifecare shared the masterplan and architectural concept design followed by a feedback session on name, design and layout. “The village holds clear appeal for golf lovers – many of Pakuranga Golf Club’s members have already registered interest. The design includes amenities including outdoor covered lounge, bar and café, wellbeing space, beauty salon, swimming pool, gym, spa, in a sought-after location,” said Sowry.

Welcoming the God of Wealth on New Year By FARIDA MASTER

t this time of the year, educator and community worker Rosa Chow gets busy making around 250 auspicious red packets for the staff at Macleans College. On the board of trustees, Rosa initiated the idea of getting Asian parents to make and present teachers/staff of Macleans College with little red packets that bring good luck and prosperity during Chinese New Year. In Chinese culture, the tradition of gifting little red envelopes with money in it is a welcome ritual during Chinese New Year, weddings and family celebrations. Traditionally it is gifted by elders in the family to the young ones. “Instead of the customary money we pack just a chocolate coin for the staff in the red envelopes that are considered lucky,” says Rosa, who was born in Hong Kong and has lived in New Zealand for more than 23 years. “The Chinese love money so everything to do with New Year is connected to good fortune, prosperity and wealth,” she laughs. The envelopes are usually red or gold with a Chinese character that represents good

Yongjie is a Chinese opera amateur and has performed opera for the last 30 years. He says that it was the grandeur of elaborately embroi-

dered silken robes of the opera singers that dazzled him as a five-year-old. “I lived in the countryside in North East China and in those days we got to wear new clothes only during New Year. The rest of the year we wore old clothes with patches on it. For me, the costumes represented wealth, aristocracy and the vivid historic stories they enacted on stage were captivating, transporting me to another world.” He bemoans the fact that New Year which was once a very solemn and special occasion where women spent days in the kitchen cooking up a feast, has all changed.

Local resident Yongjie Li, a Chinophile says that at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve on January 24, his young family will be partaking in a meal of dumplings that are shaped like gold ingots, symbolising wealth. “There will be other traditional food too... we make around a hundred dumplings with sticky rice pastry, sugar and hide a coin in some of the dumplings. The person who finds a coin is said to be lucky. Also, sugar represents sweetness—sweet tidings and reminds one to speak well of others.” A specialist advisor, (com-

Employers are obliged to make sure that all employees have employment agreements (sometimes referred to as ‘contracts’). If they fail to do so, they can be fined $1000. We need more forests

Presumably pre-schoolers are taught to clean up their own mess so when you read that industrial nations are pumping a record 43.1 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide into the earth’s atmosphere this year, somewhere between becoming a world leader and politician, the pre-school message has been lost. Similarly one is taught in secondary school biology the importance of the balance of nature, a message reiterated many times over in David Attenborough’s wonderful Planet Earth series. Unless politicians revisit these vital lessons taught in schools and clean up the mess they have allowed to fester (which amounts to restoring balance of carbon in nature) climate Armageddon is an absolute certainty. The solution is as plain as the nose on your face. It has been spelled out by scientists. If all nations in cooperation plant or replant forests amounting to the size of Canada in addition to the present ones worldwide to take that carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, the balance of nature will be restored and an accelerating climate will resume some semblance of normality. As long as we rely on politicians, it’s not going to happen so it will take a major climate catastrophe for the peoples of the earth with a united voice to action the planting of such a forest and the other immediate action we can take and as is highly recommended by scientists to stem global warming is to paint our roofs white to reflect the sun’s heat away and could also serve as a tangible protest by today’s youth sending the message to world leaders to clean up their mess.

Bring our troops home

I do believe it’s time to withdraw our NZ troops from the Middle East, not just Iraq. It’s a worthless cause to massage the ego of the US, not a war that we should put our men’s lives on the line for! However, if NZ’s leaders are reluctant to withdraw our troops from the Middle East, then those leaders should go as replacements for all those NZ soldiers who have family here at home and would like to opt out of this insane predicament that the USA have put the

A reader writes: “My overall belief is that these cartridges are being used by young people as they hang out on Saturday nights in parks and on beaches because I never see them on the urban streets during the week when I walk around the area.” Photo The Conversation

It’s no laughing matter Over the last year or so, out on my runs, I have found the odd pile of two or three cartridges and wondered what they are being used for. Being a cynical older person I assumed it wasn’t for anything good. But I didn’t do anything about it until I found about 25 of them spread over a small area in the car park above Mellons Bay early morning on Sunday, January 5. I collected them all in a large Macdonald’s slushy container and tossed them into the bin. The next day I ‘phoned my doctor’s surgery and asked the nurse about them. She informed me that young people are sniffing/ huffing them because they are filled with nitrous oxide world into. Certainly lives are cheap for the sacrifice as long as it’s not yours and I bet all political leaders are of that mindset! I also believe that it’s time for NZ to pull out from the membership of the UN as it’s just the puppet for the whims and fancies of the Western World, especially the USA. It is a known fact that the USA has dropped thousands of bombs on any part of the world that it wants to control, yet the UN has been quiet about all the political meddling and interference, not peaceable mediation, those countries – Vietnam being one of them – have faced from the USA. Please bring our men home before it gets any worse and unnecessary lives are sacrificed.

Carpark accident

Recently I experienced a fall at the New World supermarket car park in Howick. I tripped over a judder bar, falling full force onto my face and sustaining injuries to the left side of my face, my knee and my shoulder and also breaking my glasses. A number of people came to my assistance including two New World employees. In particular I would like to give thanks to the ladies that were with me the entire time and also a special thank you to Barney who drove me home and to Carly who returned my car to my home address. Thank you all for your compassion and practical assistance. We are fortunate to have such helpful and caring people residing in our community.

– laughing gas. My overall belief is that these cartridges are being used by young people as they hang out on Saturday nights in parks and on beaches because I never see them on the urban streets during the week when I walk around the area. I’m sure the young would not be investing in them unless they are getting some kind of ‘high’ from them somehow. I’ve always found them in parks and on beaches which is where the young hang out to socialise and plot! I had planned to ask the police about it but it slipped my mind as I got busy with other things.

throughout the entire Bucklands Beach Peninsula. The project has allowed for all Bucklands Beach Primary School children to also receive a free rat trap (if they and their families wish to sign up to the project) to get them started with backyard trapping. Every household will soon receive more information on how they can collect free predator traps and become involved in this crucial effort to make Bucklands Beach Peninsula pest free and help to protect our environ-

Pakuranga needs transport certainty Happy New Year – I trust that you had a wonderful break and came back refreshed for 2020 and were able to enjoy some precious time with your family and friends. 2020 is shaping up to be a busy and exciting year. Not only is it an election year, but there are a number of significant issues which need addressing in Pakuranga and which I am looking forward to advocating for on your behalf. Transport will remain at the top of my list. Just this week I met with Mayor Phil Goff to discuss the AMETI/ Eastern Busway project which is currently under construction between Panmure in Pakuranga. The purpose of the

t’s a mammoth project that needs huge effort but looks like many service organisations and groups, including schools, have joined hands with the Local Board to help make Howick pest free. Pest Free Howick Ward is a Local Board-funded project that aims to free the entire Howick Ward (Pakuranga, Howick, Botany, Flat Bush and East Tamaki) from pests. Rotary Service Clubs, Lions and the Friends of Mangemangeroa have pitched in to achieve this goal. Bucklands Beach Peninsula’s unique positioning is similar to an island with water boundaries on three sides which makes it easier to create a predator trap boundary to stop pests getting through. Pest Free Howick Ward has been working closely with local communities to provide free rat traps and trapping advice to enthusiastic residents. A number of residents have already taken advantage of this offer and are actively involved in backyard trapping. To be even more effective, approximately one in every five households must be involved. A comprehensive trapping programme is being carried out at Musick Point by Ngai Tai ki Tamaki and the next phase is to extend the trapping network

ment. Trap Library East Auckland is supplying possum and mustelid traps for the project. For further information contact pestfreehowick@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz or phone 021 560 417.

meeting was to raise concerns about the timing of the project which east Auckland has been waiting for since 2006 when the project was first mooted the completion date still being 2025. Last year Auckland Transport said there would be another delay in the planning for the Busway between Pakuranga and Panmure and a delay in construction of the Reeves Road Flyover. My message to the Mayor was that the community needs certainty and wants to see action. 1. There is concern over Auckland Transports ability to deliver projects to announced time frames.

Alleged car thief nabbed in Howick Counties Manukau Police on night shift caught an offender who was breaking into a car in Howick on Monday. “Our officers who were on a patrol when they saw a man in the process of breaking into a car,” a spokesperson said. “They swiftly arrested the man and took him into custody. The man allegedly had a number of instruments and tools on him used to break into vehicles.” A 26-year-old faces multiple charges including attempted unlawful taking, theft ex-car and possession of instruments for conversion and was due to appear in the Manukau District Court this week.

2. The delay in construction of the Reeves Road Flyover could mean additional construction impacts on traffic as this will now likely be built at the same time as the Busway between Pakuranga and Botany. All through a busy transport corridor. 3. Landowners in Pakuranga affected by the Busway and Flyover need certainty so they can make development plans. With a delay of another 18 months for Auckland Transport to finally decide where the new busway and Reeves Road Flyover will go, this impacts on any plans these landowners may have and their ability to make final decisions. I also made it clear that the community expects better communication from Auckland Transport about this project going forward. Whilst the Mayor doesn’t have operational decision making over Auckland Transport, I hope my advocacy to him will ensure more accountability of the decisions Auckland Transport make in east Auckland and better engagement for our community in these decisions. As 2020 begins I will continue to advocate for better transport and more transport choice in Pakuranga and for certainty for the remaining stages of the Eastern Busway and Reeves Road Flyover. Own boat tuition given by Coastguard How does someone keen to get afloat but lacking boating experience gain the practical boating skills required to be both competent and confident? It’s common knowledge that to be a responsible boatie you need knowledge best gained from attending a course such as the Day Skipper. What’s not so commonly known is Coastguard can also assist with practical training on your own boat to compliment this. Coastguard instructors are boaties themselves. Own Boat Tuition is delivered in your familiar environment aboard your own vessel. Your session(s) will be totally customised to your specific areas of interest such as manoeuvring, anchoring, berthing, launching, retrieving, safety drills or rough water handling. Own Boat Tuition is a fantastic and effective option as it’s on your vessel and at your regular marina berth or boat ramp. Therefore the content is 100% relevant to you and those that crew and enjoy the

boat with you. • Our friendly yet professional instructors not only know the subject, they also know how to teach it. • The course is delivered at a time that suits you. • You and your crew (recommended maximum of 3 + instructor on board) can learn the exact same thing at the same time. • You can receive guidance and assistance with vessel setup and safety equipment.

ice as it was to see Serena Williams win her first tennis tournament in Auckland this month since the birth of her now two-year-old daughter Alexis Olympia, I always preferred her older sister Venus as a gracious personality. Certainly there have been times when Serena was a bad tempered, sore loser, possibly in part because it happened so seldom. But as a power player, she is in a class of her own and just one tantalising short of Australian Margaret Court’s 24 Grand Slam triumphs. In winning the ASB Classic final 6-3 6-4 over fellow American Jessica Pegul, Serena showed gradual improvement in every match since her errorprone first round doubles with good friend, the popular Caroline Wozniacki. The pair made the final but were comfortably beaten 6-4 6-4 by the much younger American pairing of Taylor Townsend and Asia Muhammed. Having donated her prize money to the Australian bush fires cause, Williams would love to emulate Court’s Grand Slam record in Melbourne and hope

the fitness she gained from her heavy Auckland programme will serve her well. However it shouldn’t be a walk in the park even if dangerous smoke doesn’t choke the event. Experience remains important but age takes its toll and she is not the nearinvincible player she was at her peak. Some would argue that is also true of such male stars as Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. But they would expect strong debate from the 220,000 fans who watched the first ATP Cup series in Australia when Serbia took the men’s final 2-1 from Davis Cup champions Spain. That just two months separated the two events deserved the criticism of Nadal who reasonably expects better from the world governing body. But what an enthralling spectacle it provided. Djokovic beat Nadal 6-2 7-6 in another epic singles clash in the final when the Serb showed he

had the iron will to match his ability. It wasn’t Nadal’s first loss in the men’s teams championship, having been beaten by Belgium’s David Goffin. With Roberto Bautista Agat winning the other singles for Spain, it was surprising Nadal didn’t contest the deciding doubles won by Serbia. Presumably he was too knackered after winning four of six singles and two doubles over 10 days. As a spectacle Djokovic’s semi-final singles win against

23-year-old 6ft 6in Daniil Medvedev was even better, ending a two-match losing streak against the gifted Russian. Bautista Agat had also performed outstandingly in Spain’s semi-final against Australia when he was quick to pounce on the Nick Kyrgios dangerous serve for a surprisingly easy 6-1 6-4 singles win. Alex De Minaur had played consistently well for Australia but fell 4-6 7-5 6-1 to Nadal. Meanwhile with Maria Folau and Casey Kopua retired and Laura Langman and Katrina Rore resting, the new look Silver Ferns will take confidence from their 64-48 triumph against England in the Netball Nations Cup in Nottingham. England were also missing Jo Harten, Geva Mentor, Helen Housby and Serena Guthrie. But with 21-year-old Maia Wilson combining well with Amaliaranne Ekenasio and slotting 27 goals from 29 attempts, the future looks bright for the Ferns. What made it so impressive was that coach Dame Noeline Taurua used all 11 players. ■■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer

Throwing a lifeline: Ben and Nick’s great sailing challenge N

ext month, former Howick college student and Beachlands resident Ben Beasley (19) and friend Nick Gardiner (20) will be sailing 1271 nautical miles around Te Ika A Maui in the ‘Round North Island race’. They are using the challenge to raise awareness and funds for the charity Lifeline. Sir Peter Blake and Graham Eder were first to the finish. Ben and Nick will be the youngest sailors to undertake the race, with the smallest boat. They estimate it should take them about two weeks to complete. They both started sailing at the age of 9 – learning to sail Optimists, then moving through youth sailing classes, competing in national and international regattas and crewing on keelboats in coastal races and regattas Both work in sailing-related industries – Ben is a trainee spar maker and Nick is a trainee sail maker. Evolution Sails is supporting them for the race. ■■ The boys’ Lifeline fundraising page is https://give. everydayhero.com/nz/sailing-
