Endeavour retraces old passage The replica of the Endeavour sailed into Maraetai On Tuesday as part of the Tuia250 commemorations which mark 250 years since the arrival to New Zealand of Captain James Cook and the Endeavour in 1769. Accompanied by the Spirit of New Zealand and other vessels, the flotilla landed on the beach at Magazine Bay, adjacent to Umupuia Marae. Due to channel restrictions the tall ships dropped anchor about 1km offshore. Beachlands local Steve Lucas has sailed on the leg from Gisborne to Maraetai, where the Endeavour replica is now moored. This Labour Weekend there will be open vessel days for the Tuia 250 Flotilla, entertainment, kai and fireworks on the Auckland waterfront. The vessels sail past Queens Wharf. A haka powhiri will also take place on Friday October 25, 12pm-2pm at Queens Wharf (south end). It is a free event. Go to ourauckland. nz/tuia250 for more event details and updates.

Mary: inorganic policy is rubbish By JIM BIRCHALL

B

uckland’s beach local, 79 year old Mary Wilton is fed up with Auckland Council’s inorganic collection policy. The current system, allows for a ratepayer to have one annual pickup of inorganic items. After booking an appointment two months in advance, Mary was disappointed to see her refuse had been rejected by collectors and a card left by pickup contractors detailing what items were not accepted. Mary believes the list of prohibited items is too restrictive and expects more from council, particularly when coupled with “regular rate rises”. Mayor Phil Goff recently

announced of an average general rates increase of 2.5 per cent for the 2019/20 financial year. Defeated Auckland mayoral candidate John Tamihere vowed to bring back collections on a two week cycle if he had been elected. Council stipulates a property with goods for collection must be accessible to the contractors and refuse must not be left on the road under any circumstances. Mary points out that this is impracticable as many homeowners have pets and children that need to be secured in by a locked gate. As a result, many Bucklands Beach residents have taken to leaving their unwanted items out on berms and areas outside their properties creating an unsightly

environment. The collection rules were changed in 2015 in response to council concerns over safety. However Mary believes the old system wasn’t broke and says “at least it all got picked up” when a foraging free-for-all saw some people comb the suburbs for goods fit for repurpose. Auckland Council’s website has all the guidelines. Here’s a snapshot:

First place was awarded to Mo Stewart whose personal artwork will feature in Malcolm Smith Gallery in October. Briana’s art work Te Wai o Taiki is an illustrative work bringing together poetic text and textiles. “Poetry was used as a form to consider the shifting ecologies of the estuary as a response to human urbanisation,” she says. Briana was presented the award by Wally Rice and Marilyn Bakker of the Rice Family Partnership at Malcolm Smith Gallery. The Estuary Art and Ecology Award brings focus to the plights and delights of the Tamaki Estuary and is now in its 13th year. Family and friends can follow the race on Friday morning from 9:30am with live streaming online the PIC Coastal Classic Facebook.

The second calendar celebrates the area’s 171-year history and was very carefully produced with the guidance of Howick historian and author Alan La Roche. It epitomises the character of the district and harkens back to times of pioneers and the building of Howick and Pakuranga and surrounding districts.

be asked who they think will be their best champion on the ground in their patch. They will also be asked whether or not the recreational use of cannabis should be legalised. I favour the use of medicinal cannabis where appropriate but based on the current available evidence, I oppose legalising the recreational use of cannabis. This is also what I hear regularly when I talk to locals every week at their homes. The various arguments in favour of legalisation include that it will reduce the power and wealth of criminal gangs and that legal cannabis products sold to the public will be regulated and therefore less powerful and harmful. However, if cannabis is legalised, gangs that deal in it will

simply move on to something else, such as cocaine or methamphetamine, so their power and wealth will not be impacted. If legal and regulated cannabis products aren’t delivering the high that consumers want, users will go to black-market dealers to obtain products that will. The arguments against the legalisation of recreational cannabis use are compelling. Legalising cannabis will make it more available to more people and it will also send the dangerous message that it’s just another product to be consumed. A landmark New Zealand health and development study quoted in the NZ Medical Journal earlier this year found cannabis use associated with major depression, educational delay, welfare dependency, as well as

MP for Botany

Jami-Lee Ross increased risks of motor vehicle accidents, tobacco use, psychotic symptoms and other illicit drug use. I am currently running an electorate survey in Botany. While it is early days, people saying they oppose the legalisation of recreational use of cannabis are leading by a ratio of 15 to 1. Legalising the recreational use of cannabis will not help to address New Zealand’s mental health crisis or prevent vulnerable young people from making the mistake of becoming a regular user of such drugs. Governments rightly have the power to prohibit the public sale and use of products that would cause harm to society. This is one such instance where a product that is already illegal should stay illegal.

man who asked youths at a neighbouring property to turn music down in the early hours of Saturday morning, was allegedly assaulted by up to five individuals, one of whom was armed with a fence paling. a serious assault that occurred on Shandon Street, Flat Bush at around 1am on Saturday. The victim suffered a number of facial injuries as a result of the incident. Police have been conducting a number of inquiries throughout the weekend. Last night, Police arrested and charged an 18-year-old male with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Very few downsides to downsizing say local seniors. For some seniors, the idea of downsizing from a family home to a smaller apartment can be overwhelming. For many, it’s a catalyst to move forward and start really enjoying life. It’s no surprise that many seniors choose to stay in their own home for as long as they can. That’s where the memories are – where you’ve lived, loved and raised a family. But eventually, that large family home can become a burden, with high maintenance, large power and rates bills – and it can be expensive to ‘future-proof’ as you get older or need assistance. Conversely, for many, downsizing into an apartment is a chance for a fresh start – to be part of a community, meet new people, travel more and enjoy a ‘lock-up and leave’ lifestyle. Moving into one of HBH Senior Living’s modern, low-maintenance apartments was the biggest – and best – decision Joyce Kraak ever made. “I was reluctant to move out of my family home, but I just wasn’t keeping up with

the maintenance,” she says. “Here, the building is modern and warm, so I have smaller power bills. And HBH takes care of the maintenance, so I’m getting out and enjoying life a lot more.” A recent survey showed that 95% of HBH’s apartment residents wish they’d made the move earlier and Joyce is certainly one of these happy residents. “I love it here,” she exclaims. “It’s a small, friendly, inclusive community with shops and everything else I need nearby. I have a better social life than I’ve had in years!”

Downsizing – where to start? Reducing your possessions can feel like it’s just too big a task to even get started. So

we’ve put together a few pointers: 1. Start small. Choose a small area within a room or even a drawer that needs sorting out and make a start. 2. Do a little bit often. Put aside a morning, a day, or a week for ‘project downsize’. Tens of thousands of books were purchased at this year’s Bookarama organised by Howick Rotary. Photo supplied

Bookarama delivers By JOHN OSBORNE

4. Enlist help! Ask a family member or friend to lend a hand. There are also many downsizing experts who can help you make objective decisions. 5. Don’t get too precious. Think carefully about each item. When was the last time you used it? Does it have sentimental value? Do you love it or need it? 6. Re-purpose the things you don’t need. Is there someone else who would use it? Can you sell it, give it away, or take it to a local charity? As they say, someone’s trash is always someone else’s treasure.

How much do our apartment residents love living here? Well, 95% wish they’d made the move earlier. HBH’s apartments offer the freedom of independent living, with help on hand if you need it. So why not make the move? Like our other residents, you may just love it.

From small beginnings in 2000 in the old Wes Burns shop in Howick, transitioning through the Old Howick Library, Howick Intermediate School Hall, The RSA basement and now having just finished our most recent sale in the large Somerville Intermediate School Gym, The Rotary Club of Howick Bookarama continues to grow each year. Bookarama is now recognised as one of Auckland’s leading book fairs with an amazing and extensive range of books. The new location at Somerville Intermediate proved to be most successful. The large, well-lit and roomy gym provided those coming to purchase books, puzzles and games a great selection from which to choose. The ample car parking available on site meant easier access for those attending the book fair and an even easier task in taking the heavy purchases back to their cars. The public attended in droves over the six days that Bookarama was open and around 30,000 books were sold. The quality of books provided by the public to Howick Rotary for sale improves every year and this year the quality was outstanding. Those attending the sale commented on the well-laid out tables, with ample room between the rows allowing room to move about freely and to peruse the thousands of books on sale. One feature of Bookarama is the early bird sale held on the first Tuesday evening, where - for a small door charge - the public

can enter and have the pick of the best books on sale. This year it was pleasing to see a large increase in the number of local residents taking this opportunity to purchase those books. We would recommend in future years that more of our public take up this opportunity, as for the price of one book bought at retail price, they can obtain many books which may only have been read once and look as if this is the first time they have been opened. Bookarama is only successful because of the huge support Howick Rotary receives from the public in the donation of books, the businesses that are depots for book drop-off, the businesses that support in so many other ways and most especially Somerville Intermediate School for the generous provision of the use of their gymnasium for two weeks during the school holidays. With the funds raised from Bookarama, Howick Rotary is able to support financially many local community activities, including the Howick Historical Village, Howick Coastguard, Annual scholarships to Howick College, tree planting at Mangemangeroa Nature Reserve, provision of defibrillators around Howick, numerous youth activities and programmes with local schools, the donation of emergency response kits to assist people in disaster areas and Rotary International youth exchange programmes. Howick Rotary would like to thank all those in our local community who continue to support Bookarama and make it the eagerly awaited annual event. ■■ John Osborne is Howick Rotary’s Bookarama soksman

Poppies celebrates NZ Bookshop Day easy listening CD’s for sale, selected by MARBECKS

Saturday 26th October is NZ Bookshop Day A nationwide celebration supporting independent bookshops throughout New Zealand. Having a bookshop in your community gives it a heart, a true third place in your busy life where you can meet friends, relax, browse peacefully. You can also talk to our knowledgeable staff about

your favourite books and check out their recommendations. It’s all about sharing the passion for great books. This year, Poppies is delighted to kick off NZ Bookshop Day celebrations with an event on Thursday 24th at 5.30 - 7.00pm with author Helen Brown and illustrator Phoebe Morris, launching the wonderful new children’s edition of Helen’s bestselling memoir “Cleo”, titled “Cleo & Rob”. Please join us for nibbles

and insights into their work. Throughout the year Poppies hosts book groups, teacher evenings, author talks and book launches. If your school or book group would like to make a booking, please come in and talk to us. And there’s more to come: in November we’re looking forward presenting several performances in store by students and tutors of Howick’s Auckland Guitar School. Watch this space!

One Door Opens Art Competition Prizes:

This is an art competition with a twist! All artwork must be created using a base, which we supply. The base is a door – the kind you find inside your house. There are various door sizes available, but it will be a case of first in, first served. The door can be used in any way you see fit, to create your artwork. Each entry for the competition is $15 and that includes a new door.

Paint it, decoupage it, cut it up, sculpt it ... There are many things you can create with this base – the only limit is your imagination. The competition is open to all creatively minded people over the age of 13 years with wonderful prizes available.

• 13-18 years old category 1st $500, 2nd $250, 3rd $150. • 19 years and older category 1st $750, 2nd $500, 3rd $250. Plus spot prizes of art goodies! We will also be offering the option of exhibiting and selling your art piece. If you choose to do this, there will be a commission fee of 20% payable to Howick Village Business Assocation. n Art pieces to be completed by December 6, 2019 for judging.

Spring clean your car It’s the season of rebirth and regeneration. It’s also a good time to check out your car and get it ready for summer. Your car has probably suffered more than most over the colder months and chances are you will soon be packing it up and heading for the beach.

So here are a few tips to get it ready Clean it Simple but effective. Give your car a good clean inside and out especially if you live in a part of New Zealand that had a cold, damp winter, (which is pretty much everywhere). Outside your car could be caked in mud or salt if you live in a part where it snows. Inside it has had wet clothes and muddy feet all over it. Clean it out and give it a good airing.

Keep cool It’s going to get hot and if you are joining the great

Christmas exodus to the beach you are likely to hit traffic at some point. To avoid your engine overheating check your cooling system for leaks and make sure hoses are secure and in good condition. It’s a good idea to drain, flush and refill the coolant system every two years.

EXPERT SERVICE AIR CONDITIONING FOR YOUR CAR – ALL WORK GUARANTEED COME IN NOW FOR A FREE AIR-CONDITIONING CHECK: PH 274 4609

COOLCAR AIR-CONDITIONING CENTRE

Engine oil You should check the engine oil level regularly but this time make sure there are no leaks. If you haven’t already done it this year then get the oil and oil filter changed.

Check your belts Cambelt and fanbelt failure is not cheap to sort out, so it is worth checking these in your spring clean. Most Japanese vehicle cambelts should be changed at 100,000 kms or every five years. Many European vehicles have change times between 40,000 and 60,000 kms. It should tell you under the bonnet when it was last checked.

Engine spark Another thing worth checking is your spark plugs. Worn spark plugs can lead to engine misfiring and the eventual breakdown

of the high tension leads - so check and replace if necessary.

Tyres should be checked regularly and not just at WOF time. Check the tread and tyre pressure are both correct. Make sure you check the spare tyre if your car has one as well. Have tyres checked for excessive or unusual wear patterns and for any lumps or tread distortion. As tyres roll along the road they generate heat, especially on hot days. If tyre pressures are low, the combination of heat and excessive movement of the tyre sidewall can lead to a blow-out. Source: www.aa.co.nz

Auckland Council blunder

By George, don’t blame God

Poor God, getting the blame again. We can excuse insurance companies, which after all don’t like paying up, but why is Ian George blaming God for global warming when we have a perfectly good explanation: more greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. Does he expect God to change the laws of physics for him? That’s a big ask. Perhaps he should settle for God explaining radiative physics to him then he might understand why increasing the atmospheric level of CO2 45 per cent has caused Earth to retain more energy, disturbing the

That could just be an electric bus but the ART (Autonomous-Rail Rapid Transit) is much more than that. It has all the speed (70km/h), capacity and ride quality of light rail with its autonomous optical guidance system, train-like bogies with double axles and special hydraulics and tyres. The standard ART system is three carriages that can carry 300 people but it can take five carriages and 500 people if needed. In three years of trials, no impact on road surfaces has been found. The trackless tram costs around $6-$8 million per kilometre, sure beats the spiralling-out-of-cost CRL which has already doubled in cost to $6 billion and it can be put into a road system over a

weekend. Cities across the world are lining up to trial these trackless tram systems. So far, Australian cities moving to use them are Townsville, Hobart, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth – where five separate corridors are competing to run the first ART trial. Cars could be moved from Queen Street and the trackless trams could run from Britomart to Mt Eden instead of the CRL and anywhere else in Auckland once established. Passengers can change from rail to tram inside, out of the weather and it would not be an experiment as they are already in use in China. Time to wake up guys and admit you have not done your homework.

You saved my life!

I am writing to express my heartfelt thanks to those people who saw me fall off my bike near my home in Baird Street, Howick, soon after noon on Saturday September 28 after my regular Saturday morning bike ride. Their quick action to begin CPR and call for an ambulance, without a doubt, saved my life. I have no recollection of the whole day but have heard that

After seeing the item on TV news Tuesday night (October 8) explaining trackless trams, it would appear that Auckland Council / Auckland Transport have made an enormous blunder proceeding with the CRL (City Rail Link) and the cost of billions of dollars and major inconvenience to a large part of the city. Trackless trams are neither a tram nor a bus, though they have rubber wheels and run on streets. The high-speed rail innovations have transformed a bus into something with all the best features of light rail and none of its worst features. It replaces the noise and emissions of buses with electric traction from batteries recharged at stations in 30 seconds or at the end of the line in 10 minutes.

many others also helped, managing the scene and directing traffic until the police, fire service and ambulance arrived. I need to also extend my thanks to the St John ambulance officers who defibrillated and restarted my heart. I would like to personally thank those who gave me CPR and so I would be very pleased if they would contact me by email (choney@orcon. net.nz). My experience reinforces the importance of knowledge and skill in performing CPR and a community who work together and care for each other. I guess you never know when those CPR skills will be needed!

Road would fare. “When the T2 Lane was installed at the beginning of June it became quite clear early on that AT had failed in Churchand Services its objectives had simply made the journey worse for motorists, without any 0.5 x 1 significant benefit for those using public transport,” he says. “This is what projects like the Eastern Busway are designed to solve, by making public transport more reliable and convenient for Pakuranga but until it’s ready, there is simply no point in implementing halfbaked ideas like this T2 Lane. “Our congestion issues are made even worse by the fact that another key piece of the overall AMETI project, the Reeves Road Flyover was

recently delayed. The AMETI project , he says, was designed to be staged, with the Reeves Road Flyover to be built prior to the Botany to Pakuranga stage of the Busway. This work will now take place together, meaning more congestion for Pakuranga motorists. “As a result, my petition not only calls for the removal of the T2 Lane but urges AT to start construction on the Reeves Road Flyover as soon as possible and stop the continued delays,” says Brown. “Pakuranga has waited over a decade for this project and now that the Eastern Busway is finally underway, we cannot afford to see the rest of it pushed back.”

Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown has delivered a petition of 1553 signatures to Auckland Transport calling on AT to remove the T2 Lane from Pakuranga Road. The petition wants AT to focus their time and resources on the completion of the Eastern Busway and Reeves Road Flyover. ”When AT first proposed the idea of a T2 Lane on Pakuranga Road at the beginning of this year, the local community expressed their concern that such a move would actually make things worse for the majority of commuters in our area,” says Brown. “As the local MP I hosted a public meeting in February where around 200 locals

Times are a changing By ALISTAIR DAVIDSON

Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, October 24, 2019 — 19

Hot rod happiness Southside Streeters’ Hot Rods in Howick proved a big hit (Times, October 17). Here are a few more photos – taken by Wayne Martin – that we wanted to share.

B

ack in 1989 my wife Sharron and I road tested Mazda’s sixth generation 323 GLX sedan. This mainstream four-door with a boot was an extremely good car but what made it memorable was that it was our first new-car report for Times Newspapers. The column had a unique ‘His and Hers’ format. I’d write about the car’s performance and styling, while Sharron would concern herself with how easy (or hard) it was to put a child’s safety seat in, and how many bags of groceries would fit in the boot. Sharron stopped writing 10 years ago, when life got in the way. And now, 30 years after being handed the keys to Mazda NZ’s press car, it feels like the right time to put away my ballpoint pen and box Brownie. The motoring media landscape has changed, partly due to the growth in digital advertising and advertorial content. But the catalyst for my ‘retirement’ was a phone call from Maria Tsao, Mazda’s NZ’s long-serving and awesome PR person, offering a drive of the latest version of that first test car: a Mazda3 sedan. Sure, I could have wrapped up my association with the Times by reviewing some exotic supercar and go out in a blaze of tyre smoke, but as appealing as that sounds, the three decade Mazda thing just works.

Same place, different times: the Mazda 3 photographed 30 years ago on Ilford 35mm print film, and the new Mazda3 in glorious full colour megapixels. Photos Alistair Davidson

I could wax lyrically about all the improvements in active and passive safety, performance, fuel efficiency and specification, but hey, that’s a given. What really matters when comparing the two is that although small sedans are well and truly on the way out, Mazda is persevering with one And it has done much more than persevere. Considering a sedan’s aging target market and that Mazda also offers a sporty-looking Mazda3 hatch at the same $48,795 price, it should be all conservative and boring. But it most definitely isn’t. There’s a willing and composed chassis under the sleek sheetmetal, one that encourages you to press on and attack corners. Yet it’s comfortable enough to not alienate those who just like to amble along. With the 2.5-litre engine’s 139kW

of power and 252Nm of torque, it has ample grunt but two-cylinder deactivation provides excellent fuel efficiency on the open road. A dark-toned leather interior oozes class and being the top-spec Limited model it boasts an impressive array of safety, and comfort and convenience, features. It’s roomy too with more space than that old Mazda 323’s big brother, the 626. What I can’t tell you is how a child’s safety seat fit. The infant that Sharron was strapping into the 323 sedan is now 33-years-old, and his younger brother and his wife are expecting our first grandson. No doubt Sharron and I will be strapping the young fella into a car seat or two but we won’t be writing about it. There will be plenty of newfangled digital photos taken though. Gymnast makes NZ squad Thirteen-year-old local gymnast Bethany Hyde has made the New Zealand gymnastics team. The Bucklands Beach Intermediate School student — and former Maraetai Beach School student – will be representing New Zealand for the first time internationally at the Steps Tour in Hawaii next year. Bethany started gymnastics when she was 7-years-old. Her mum Kirsten said Bethany was a little uncoordinated and would trip over herself running down the corridor. “I thought it would be great to help her balance. She now does back tucks on a beam, her balance is amazing, but she is still the kid that can trip over herself running down a corridor.” Bethany is so dedicated to her sport, training at Eastern Suburbs Gymnastics Club in Glen Innes over 20 hours a week. Her passion and work ethic allow her to

still manage to find time to balance school, home and gym life, said Kirsten, allowing Bethany to work towards her dream of competing for her country. When most people will be relaxing and enjoying some time off over Christmas, Bethany will be training hard getting ready to leave for Hawaii at the beginning of January. “With gymnastics being entirely self-funded, Bethany would welcome any sponsors to aid with her continued growth as a New Zealand athlete,” Kirsten said. A Givealittle page has been set up to raise funds for Bethany’s trip www. givealittle.co.nz/cause/ representing-nz-at-thegymnastics-2020-hawaiitour.

arely has a Rugby World Cup match promised such excitement as Saturday’s eagerly anticipated semi-final in which the English rose will seek to wound All Blacks’ pride at Yokohama. Both rivals were in devastating quarterfinals form last weekend with England’s confidence soaring upon overwhelming Australia 40-16 before the All Blacks blitzed Ireland 46-14. Under coach Eddie Jones, England are no longer a boring one-dimensional team who rely on forward power to allow their halves to play a kicking territorial game, Their tight forwards are stronger than ever and loosies Billy Vunipola, Sam Underhill and Tom Curry have the speed, skill and strength to severely test the in-form Kieran Read, Sam Cane and Ardie Savea. While kicking does play a huge part in the role of halves Ben Youngs and Owen Farrell, captain Farrell is also capable of igniting his backline with sweetly timed

passes to juggernaut secondfive Manu Tuilagi who takes some stopping. In Johnny May and Anthony Watson, they have two fast, try-scoring wings just as New Zealand does with unpredictable crackerjack Sevu Reece and George Bridge. To summarise, the English rose has sharp thorns intent on wounding the All Blacks in much the same way as a Trojan arrow struck Greek hero Achilles’ heel. They should not be underestimated, especially if it turns out to be a tightly fought contest where Farrell’s superior goal-kicking boot could counter balance the All Blacks greater flair. One of the greatest gifts of athletics guru Arthur Lydiard beyond instilling confidence in champion runners like Peter Snell and Murray Halberg, was his ability to peak them at the right time. All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has the same knack, though he justifiably seeks to share the kudos with fellow coaches Ian Foster, Mike Cron and Scott McLeod.

Just as an injury ridden Dan Carter peaked at the 2015 World Cup where he was named player of the tournament, so too has skipper Kieran Read after having undergone back surgery last year. Joe Moody had his best game against Ireland and it was particularly pleasing to see Brodie Retallick, Jack Goodhue and replacement Sonny Bill Williams perform so well after long injury breaks. Meanwhile sprightly halfback Aaron Smith had his best game of the year, scored the first two tries and combined sweetly with Richie Mo’unga who varied his play cleverly. Brilliant Beauden Barrett won man of the match honours for the second time in this tournament and made 21 carries to pass the previous World Cup record of 20 shared by John Kirwan and Buck Shelford in 1987. Especially pleasing was the binding and low body position of the lively forwards against a famed, experienced

Agnew’s Angle Irish pack who began to show their age. Meanwhile having conquered brave Japan 26-3, South Africa should account for a Welsh team that scraped home 20-19 against 14-man France after lock Sébastien Vahaamahina was red-carded in the 49th minute for an elbow to Aaron Wainwright’s head. But for Vahaamahina’s stupidity, unpredictable France would have won. Predictably the Springboks had too much power for brave, adventuresome Japan who were eventually overcome in the second half. That should give them confidence against Six Nations champions Wales on Sunday while All Blacks and Englishmen recover from wounds suffered in what should be a bruising Saturday clash. ■■ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer
