Mayoral debate just a damp squib

We’re getting closer to the end of mayoral debates and the city’s leading contenders Phil Goff and John Tamihere stepped out on Tuesday to a forum in Burswood. Times reporter Jim Birchall went along.

small, weather-beaten crowd gathered at East City Wesleyan Church in Burswood Drive on Tuesday to hear the opinions of incumbent Auckland Mayor Phil Goff and seasoned politician John Tamihere who is seeking a first term in office after this year’s Auckland mayoral election. The two combatants were introduced as “two real...heavyweight politicians” and added these “two guys will attract up to 80 per cent of the vote” by the evening’s modera-

tor Lloyd Wong, Tamihere started by detailing his upbringing, which he described as working class, adding this has aided him in developing a “strong social conscience”. Goff said being a born and bred Aucklander gave him extensive local knowledge and compassion of the demographic. Goff delivered a polished, measured response when asked about what he has achieved for the city during his tenure. He described Auckland as “a fantastic city to

live in”, but did concede transport woes do exist and are a result of infrastructure planning that badly misjudged the city’s population explosion. He championed the recently completed upgrades at Botany Town Centre, and stated the Reeves Road Flyover (slated for completion 2021) as examples of successful projects out east and highlighted the Supercity ‘s low rate increase when compared with similar urban areas. Tamihere came out swinging and

attacked Auckland council’s “fiscal blowouts”, labelling them an “out of control council which is running a regulatory monopoly” and invited residents to “challenge central government, challenge downtown Auckland” (a term he coined 'surrender mana') in regards to the regional fuel tax and on the back of figures that implied 93 per cent of taxes generated in Auckland are gobbled up by central government in Wellington. ➤ Turn to Page 14

A group of palaeontologists were on site digging for fossils and a number of dinosaur eggs were uncovered from the deep, sandy

fossil pits. The eggs were carefully distributed to each classroom and will be observed as they hatch out over the next week or so. Owairoa Primary School students participated in the Grand Parade with over 900 marching dinosaurs and then gathered together to give a huge dinosaur roar

that exceeded 180 decibels! The opening celebration concluded with a huge Dinosaur Stomp to dinosaur music. Students and their families then visited the Book Fair in the school hall to choose and purchase from a wide range of books. ■ The Book Fair is open all this week.

‘Development had supporters’

Property developer David Jans puts his case for a 71-unit residential development in Cockle Bay despite having been refused resource consent last month. The applicant Box Property Ltd has appealed the decision

O

ur proposal for this site was supported by a number of very experienced town planners and urban designers (from private practice and council). Within the council we are aware of only one urban designer who was steadfastly opposed to the development. Our planning and legal advisers do not believe the decision by the Independent Commissioners accurately reflects the intent of the integrated residential development provisions (IRD) within the unitary plan. The issues are complex and it is not our intention to litigate this through the media. What we will say however is that all Aucklanders are exposed to the rapid growth of the city’s population (50 per cent in the last 20 years). Currently the Auckland urban

area has a shortfall of 50,000 homes and projections are that a further 400,000 homes will be required over the next 20 years. The reality is no one likes the disruption of development in their neighbourhood, be it roading, infrastructure or housing. However the plan to accommodate the Auckland urban area’s rapid growth has been determined and it is towards a city with a quality compact urban form that allows opportunities for more intensive living and working environments and for more housing to be built around areas of activity and close to good transport options. Auckland Council has obligations to plan for this growth under the National Policy Statement on Urban Development Capacity. Local authorities are required to prepare a housing and business development capacity assessment

and to regularly monitor market indicators. What we are seeing come into play at Sandspit Rd is anticipated in the Policy Statement; Ideally, urban planning should enable people and communities to provide for their social, economic, cultural and environmental wellbeing through development while managing its effects. This is a challenging role, because cities are complex places; they develop as a result of numerous individual decisions, and this often involves conflict between diverse preferences. The Howick Ward is part of Auckland City and with its coastal setting, beaches, generous areas of parks and green space, good schools and community facilities, it is a desirable place to live. The idea that the Howick Ward is out of bounds for intensification is not equitable or sustainable. The concept of

IRD’s was born from the independent hearings panel in response to a submission by Ryman Healthcare for retirement villages to have special exemptions in order for retired people to be able to remain in their communities. The panel decided to broaden the definition, rather than hand retirement village developers a competitive advantage.

The Language Literature Challenge Team (seated) won in the Primary Division. The team – Sofia Forbes-Brown, Caleb McKay, Rachel Wagener, Daniel Loh, Euan Hooi and Seth Sabeta – moved on to the next level – the National Competition in Wellington.

his week saw the opening of New Zealand’s newest state-ofthe-art BMW and MINI dealership — located in east Auckland. Positioned between three thriving suburbs; Botany, Mount Wellington and Clevedon/Whitford, the new facility was designed to reinforce the high-quality service and unique retail experience BMW and MINI deliver to their customers. East Auckland BMW and MINI Garage is a “sister dealership” to New Zealand’s most popular and successful BMW and MINI Dealerships — Auckland City BMW and Auckland MINI Garage. “For a premium brand it’s not only about selling luxury cars, but ensuring that every link in the business chain focuses on putting the customer first. With this at the forefront of our new expansion, we have created positive and unique enhancements at each and every touch point of the customer journey with both BMW and MINI,” says Ian Gibson, Managing Director of Auckland City and East Auckland BMW and MINI Garage. “The opening couldn’t have come at a better time — it coincides with the BMW product renaissance we are currently experiencing - including the all-new X7, 3 Series, 7 Series, 8 Series and Z4. and MINI, with customers being able to experience over 100 vehicles.” Built on an 8,000-square-metre site, the magnificent building boasts almost 4,000 square metres of indoor space where customers can interact with more than 30 vehicles unaffected by weather. This includes a number of exclu-

sive showroom spaces for specialist BMW and MINI models including the high-performance M brand and John Cooper Works. The Service workshop alone is more than 1,000 square metres with 14 high-tech Workshop bays and will prepare and deliver over 1000 new BMW and MINI vehicles per annum.

Customers can relax in the new public cafe and lounge, or chat to a BMW or MINI Genius to become more familiar with their luxury vehicle — before, during and after their purchase. With plenty of customer parking on-site, the new Dealership provides a great opportunity for customers working or living in the local area to discover the great selection of products available across the BMW and MINI ranges. Customers will enjoy easy motorway access and convenience, as the dealership is only 10 minutes from Sylvia Park and less than 20 minutes from the city. A fully automated customer carwash which runs entirely on harvested rain water is an example of the technology and commitment to sustainability by both the BMW & MINI brands. Howick and Pakuranga Times, Thursday, September 26, 2019 — 5

Ho ho ho, here we go! A

s the weeks are creeping by the planning of the Howick Santa Parade continues to gain momentum! We are now only 11 weeks away from the big day! The Howick Santa Parade is run by The Howick Children’s Charitable Trust, originally setup and founded by Times’ managing director Reay Neben, now run by John Russell, Pip & her mum Bo Burns and their large team of merry helpers. Contrary to what many believe, the Santa Parade is not fully funded by the council. To get this incredible local event funded it takes a lot of hard work applying for grants, reaching out to local businesses, sponsorship packages and fundraising.

“This year we have launched our own fundraising initiatives, the first being The Santa Quiz night that was held at Bosun’s Bar. With a whopping turnout of 150 people, we raised $3400 on the night from ticket sales and raffles! A great night was had by all with the East FM radio team taking out the spot prize and winning the overall quiz,” she said. “The second fundraising campaign we have launched is selling ‘Live Cams’. These are similar to GoPros. They come with a full guarantee and warranty. They normally sell for $599. “We have managed to source these at a fantastic price which we can offer to you for just $150 each. They are a great idea for Christmas

gifts so get in early.” For the parade itself, Bo has some excellent judges lined up this year, with nearly all the float spots taken already. “We will have live entertainment on Moore Street, Uxbridge Street and the main stage is now booked and will be as great as ever,” she says. “Lastly but most importantly, we have had some fabulous sponsors come on board, with the exciting news that Barfoot & Thompson Howick have taken the Platinum sponsorship this year for the 2019 naming rights. “Alongside them, we have Galbraiths Legal Team and New World as our Gold Sponsors, with New World also recently donating $800

Bookarama is coming soon and Howick Rotary need lots more books. The signs are going up, the collectors are answering phone calls and the books are pouring in says Howick Rotarian John Osborne. He encourages all Howickians to clear out their bookshelves and books stored in their garages and donate them to this year’s Bookarama. “The more books we have for sale, the more Howick Rotary can fund to support local community activities,” says Osborne. It’s that time of year again when Howick Rotary is again collecting and sorting books for the 19th annual Bookarama, the club’s

main fundraiser. Proceeds go to a number of community projects in the Howick area. “Once again the response to the request for book donations is fantastic and Rotarians are busy sorting books in preparation for the big sale week in October,” Osborne says. This year there is a new venue for Bookarama which is to be held at Somerville Intermediate School in Somerville Road, Howick. This new venue provides a much larger hall where the books will be displayed over a greatly increased number of tables, allowing many more books to be displayed and reduce the need for booklovers to search through boxes underneath

sought after by the shoppers and donations of these will also be greatly received,” says Osborne. Howick Rotarians are now busy most days sorting books and, over the next few weeks, will spend hundreds of hours ensuring that quality books are ready for the sale, and those attending the book sale will also have the opportunity to search through many of the older books which may be of specific interest to those interested in classics. ■■ This year the doors will be open from Wednesday October 9 to Saturday October 12 from 9am to 6pm, and Sunday 13th from 9am to 3pm.

Howick treated to four authors Five New Zealand authors provided an entertaining morning at Classy Crafts Market on Saturday September 21 at the All Saints Community Centre, Howick. The first author to speak was Ruth Hammond who was inspired by her faith to write poetry, and later a book of prose, which ultimately led her to work with women in prisons. Her books were widely distributed throughout the prison system, resulting in some surprising and gratifying outcomes. Marilyn J Bakker, author of Danger at Devil’s Cove and The Mystery of the Missing Artefact, revealed that a third book of the trilogy would be released before Christmas and then gave a punchy motivational talk about how to start writing, encouraging interaction with the audience to create their own characters and write their own stories. Birthday boy and author Gavin Gosney had the audience chuckling with his irrepressible humour as he told of the journey of Howick’s iconic cat, Sammy Two Shoes. This large furry character made a star appearance, delighting the

children with his high-fives and basket of goodies. Gavin gave the welcome news that an additional Sammy Two Shoes book would be available before Christmas. First time author and illustrator Sharon Watson was up next with her fabulous wire-mesh sculptures of her book characters, Slinky the Skink and Benny the Dog, on display. She spoke of her highly creative grandparents, and the way in which they encouraged her creative endeavours. There are

five more exciting Slinky books on the drawing board. The audience remained firmly in their seats for the fifth author Dr Una Grieve who gave a summary of her fascinating memoirs and fielded many questions from the audience. Former Mayor of Howick Morrin Cooper acknowledged Dr Grieve’s considerable contribution to music and medicine in the Howick area and described her ‘as a doctor who always went the extra mile’. Pene Frost, Regional Manager, STAND, Pakuranga Health Camp, was also there in support of her doctor of many years. MC, Wally Rice, concluded this entertaining and informative event with appreciation to all concerned.

Mark Johnson (Labour Party) ■■ Standing for the Howick Local Board ■■ Botany Subdivision Mark has lived in east Auckland for 14 years with his wife and two children. He is a former high school teacher and currently works in publishing. Mark wishes to bring his experience and vision to the Howick Local Board so the community can grow into the best version of the richly diverse, vibrant community and commercial environment that it can be. Mark has the drive and vision for the Local Board to prosper and flourish as Auckland moves into a promising and challenging new era. He will seek practical and community-oriented solutions to the Botany Subdivision’s transport difficulties as well as the lack of clear community spaces and the best use of the ratepayer funding.

Sidhu Singh (Labour Party) ■■ Standing for the Howick Local Board ■■ Botany Subdivision For 22 years, Sidhu has been a local businessman and community leader. He is actively involved in a variety of projects and events in the Auckland Indian community and serves on the Counties Manukau Central Police Advisory Board and previously as treasurer of the Manukau Lions Club. As a small business owner, he has been a powerful voice for inter-community harmony and will continue to promote Indian representation and participation in politics on the Howick Local Board. Another priority will be ensuring law and order in the community. He has been a part of efforts to reduce robberies of small business owners and will drive political action on the Local Board to

prevent this. He is committed to working towards reducing traffic congestion, increasing housing affordability and making the community more environmentally friendly. Sidhu lives with his wife and two sons who attend Auckland University.

Lance Millward Labour Party) ■■ Standing for the Howick Local Board ■■ Botany Subdivision Lance is a highly experienced in landscape architecture – designing infrastructure, housing and open space throughout New Zealand. He and his wife moved to Highland Park from Ellerslie four years ago together with their two boys - 8 and 11. Lance has always been active in the communities he has lived in as a volunteer whether on a PTA, in the community organising working bees or collaborating to get things done. He manages a number of shopping centres in Auckland as a facilities manager. Lance will be pushing for Howick to get a share of the rates pie and use his skills to make sure ratepayers are consulted on projects that affect them. As our ward changes and grows and intensifies, there are opportunities to develop open space, enhance the environment and plan for infrastructure diversity.

Masooma Mehdi ■■ Standing for Howick Local Board ■■ Botany Subdivision Kia ora, my name is Masooma Mehdi. I am a business owner, a mother, and a proud New Zealander who has called this country home for the past 25 years. I am standing for the Howick Local Board in the upcoming elections because I have a great passion to serve this community and make Howick into a happier, healthier and safer place to live. I have 15 years of experience in community engagement and youth empowerment and have conducted all my work with integrity, compassion, respect and inclusivity. I also chair an active youth group based in east Auckland and officially represent a humanitarian global organisation. I am also the co-founder of a nationwide campaign called YouAreUS which was formed in the wake of March 15 incident to bring more awareness, understanding and aroha between people of all walks and faiths. My experience makes me wellequipped to be a strong voice for our diverse community as I can understand the issues and challenges faced by our society. Howick is a highly diverse community with its beautiful beaches, public facilities and, not to mention, great people! As your representative, I will work on developing positive relationships between people of all faiths and cultures. I will also be committed to resolve the most pressing issues faced by Howick. Our local public transport facilities are woefully underdeveloped, and our environment needs care and attention. Our country has a mental health crisis and there is an urgent need to raise awareness on mental health issues and care, with our teen suicide rate being the highest in the western world. I will make it a priority to engage our community in solving these issues and making Howick a better place. It’s about those two things that have a major effect in the enhancement of physical and mental wellness. Not just ourselves, but also those who may be less fortunate. It’s a lifestyle adjustment. One man made a major adjustment when he was 50 years of age. He quit smoking, lost some weight, started tramping, cycling, skiing and joined a gymnasium. The passion for this new lifestyle prompted him, at age 65, to qualify as a fitness instructor then personal trainer and a lifestyle coach; working with CLM, Les Mills and his own brand. In 2014, then aged 79, Terry Donovan started the unique and highly successful Howick Senior Cycling Club. Terry’s club motto was ‘exercise and socialise for wellness’ which signifies his belief in their equal importance. His next dimension was to include all cyclists of any age, and so the Howick Social Cycling Group came into existence. He says “It’s really nice to see the mums and dads, sons and daughters, all finding a place for themselves, and enjoying the full support of the group”. Terry says that the next move could be the most important of al, and it was sparked by his shock at our high suicide statistics. He strongly believes that the cycling community can play a part. Annually he would like to see all cyclists and cycling clubs get

Dancers head to Hollywood The Ruske Performing Arts studio has some exciting stuff happening this year and in just under a week they are undertaking the trip of a lifetime with 15 dancers heading to Disneyland and New York! This team of dancers range in age from 7 to 17 and have spent the last eight months rehearsing tirelessly for this trip. While in Los Angeles and Hollywood they have the opportunity to undertake workshops at some of the best studios in the city, as well perform at Disneyland,

Citadel Shopping Centre and Universal Studios! From there they are jumping on a plane and travelling over to New York where they get to take more workshops, take a tour of Amsterdam Theatre, the second oldest operating theatre in New York where they get to go backstage and try on costumes. To help get the kids here they have worked tirelessly doing sausage sizzles, car washes, movie nights, a disco and quiz night.

Balance needed in gun law reforms T

his week the Parliament began debating the second round of the Government’s proposed changes to New Zealand’s gun laws. These changes were drafted following the horrific terror attack at two Christchurch mosques on March 15 that resulted in the deaths of 51 Kiwi Muslims and a large number of injuries. The first round of changes to our gun laws received overwhelming support in the Parliament and came into force earlier this year. They included a ban on military-style semi-automatic firearms and assault rifles, certain firearm parts, magazines and ammunition and a gun buy-back scheme. It’s too soon to judge the longterm success of the buy-back but more than 15,000 firearms have been handed in so far.

Reducing the number of the types of firearms used in the Christchurch attack that are in circulation will hopefully lower the risk of these guns falling into the wrong hands. I struggle to see a place in our society for military-style weapons of war that can inflict horrific carnage in such a short space of time. The second round of the proposed gun law changes had its first reading in the Parliament on Tuesday. It includes the creation of a firearms registry, updated and new offences and penalties for gun-related crimes and increased oversight on firearm importation and sales. The length of validity of firearms licences would be reduced from 10 years to five and a licensing regime would be created for shooting clubs and ranges. Any changes to our gun laws

MP for Botany

Jami-Lee Ross must balance the rights of lawabiding gun owners with the need to increase public safety. Getting guns out of the hands of those who would misuse them, such as criminals and gang members, should be the priority. That’s especially the case given about 18,200 crimes involving firearms were committed in New Zealand between 2015 and 2018. The police should be given greater powers to crack down on armed criminals to better protect the public and remove dangerous firearms from the black market. I’m paying close attention to all sides of the debate around this issue and I’m keen to hear from a wide range of voices on it. This is a serious matter that demands thoughtful consideration.

Rotary trivia night a big success The Pakuranga Rotary Trivia Night with a Wearable Arts theme held at Edgewater College was a riot. Not only in terms of colours, ideas and fellowship but also with former president Duncan Loney going all out to entertain. He was an excellent MC and quite a showman with the outrageous change of costumes. It was a well-orchestrated event that raised a lot of money for the Life Education Trust. The auction was a big hit as it was not only the Rotarians but a lot of guests and friends of Rotary who generously put their hand up to make it a bidding success.

The challenger then aired his thoughts on the exclusion of right-wing Canadian’s Stefan Molyneux and Lauren Southern who were declined a chance to air their views at a cancelled event in 2018, declaring as mayor he would allow democracy and the principles of free speech to be upheld, even if he personally found the subject matter abhorrent. Main retires from competition A

quablack #243, Corey Main from Howick Pakuranga Swmming Club, has announced his retirement from competitive swimming to focus on other endeavours. Corey, who recently graduated from the University of Florida, swam for the University squad, the ‘Gators’ with coach Gregg Troy. Corey’s first international competition was the 2011 Youth Commonwealth Games in the Isle of Man. He made the finals in both the 100m and 200m Backstroke at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and followed this by finishing 7th in the 200m Backstroke at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships on the Gold Coast. The following year, Corey placed 16th in the 200m Backstroke at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan. In 2016 Corey qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, where he was a semi-finalist in both the 100m and 200m Backstroke and recorded personal bests for both events with a time of 53.99 and 1:57.51 respectively. Corey qualified for the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest at the New Zealand Open Championships in the 200m Backstroke with a time of 1:58.74 seconds and the 100m

Backstroke in 53.87s. At the 2017 FINA World Championships, Corey set two personal bests to qualify for the finals of the 100m Backstroke with a 53.76s effort in the semifinal. Corey finished 8th overall in the final. In his favoured event 200m Backstroke, Corey matched his 16th world ranking from two years ago. “Moving on from swimming was the hardest decision I’ve made but at this stage in my life, I’ve never been more happy and excited to start a new chapter in my life. Right now, I’m working on get-

ting my coaching certifications while actively seeking finance jobs in the States,” he said. “Swimming has given me the opportunity to meet extraordinary people who I wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity to meet otherwise. It’s allowed me to travel the globe and represent New Zealand. Every opportunity to wear the fern is an incredible honour. I’d just like to thank my parents Tracey and David who are incredible and have sacrificed so much for, family and friends, Swimming NZ, HPSNZ, and the University of Florida/Gator Swim Club.”

Worried about a mole map? You’re in safe hands here The team at New Zealand Skin Health understands that a mole map can be quite daunting, especially if it’s your first experience. The staff are all sensitive and caring professionals whose first priority is to make you feel comfortable and at ease. They will answer all questions beforehand and will explain the process and their findings in easy to understand language. Whilst they are all highly accomplished clinicians, they will never baffle a patient with medical terminology! On the other hand, if you’re keen to know the science, there’s certainly no shortage of it! The teams in both Howick

and Remuera clinics are made up of highly experienced dermoscopists, skin cancer experts and specialist surgeons. They have dedicated their careers to the detection and treatment of skin cancer, and are passionate practitioners of their skills. To support them, New Zealand Skin Health has invested in state of the art detection and diagnostic technology powered by the latest artificial intelligence, so they have all the best equipment at their fingertips. Here in New Zealand we are constantly at threat from harmful UV rays that penetrate the very thin ozone layer above us. Being vigilant about skin

health is vital, and that doesn’t just mean putting on a hat, some high factor sun cream and hoping it will all be fine (although both these things are a great first step)! True skin health means taking a proactive approach to wellbeing by trusting the experts and the science. So, no more delays. Book your molemap or skin consultation today with confidence that you are placing your vital skin health and wellbeing in the safest hands. NZ Skin Health is a Southern Cross Easy Claim provider. It also offers an annual payment plan to make regular skin checks affordable.

Regulations a big concern T

he issue that could have the greatest impact on the real estate profession over the next three years is changing government and local council regulations, according to research issued last week by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ). According to a survey of 1861 real estate professionals around the country, 59 per cent citied changing regulation as their top concern, whereas two years ago changing regulation was 6th on the list with 51 per cent citing it as having a great impact. Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “Given the pace of legislative change the real estate profession has had to deal with over the last two years, including anti-money laundering, changes to the Residential Tenancies Act, a ban on letting fees, negative gearing, asbestos, methamphetamine and a ban on foreign buyers, it’s not surprising that regulation is top of mind right now for the industry. “The real estate industry has had to deal with more legislative changes in the last two years than we’ve dealt with in the five years prior. This has involved a significant level of upskilling across the industry as well as the implementation of new technology systems and processes; all of which require an investment which comes at a cost.” Second on the list of issues that could have the greatest impact on the real estate industry is global eco-

Outdoor bliss at Shades Direct There’s no denying that even at the height of summer, Auckland weather is unpredictable. This is just one of the many reasons why protection from the sun, wind and rain is essential all year round. To prepare outdoor areas for every weather condition no matter how adverse, Shades Direct should be the first port of call as it specialises in outdoor awning solutions that add space, style and value to the home. Designed and engineered on New Zealand shores, Shades Direct’s range of quality and versatile outdoor products is suited to both commercial and residential applications. Shades Direct most popular products are the Outsider and the Clearspan Outsider awning systems.

Fabricated from a mixture of marine grade, structural RHS aluminium and polycarbonate roofing providing 99 per cent UV protection, it’s easy to see why so many people choose the extremely durable Outsider system for their home. Its frame can be powder coated in your colour of choice and when an Outsider awning is purchased from Shades Direct, clients can expect the same dedicated service from start to finish, dealing with the same person from the point of sale right through to installation in the home. If an Outsider or Clearspan Outsider awning doesn’t fit in with your home’s décor, you’re in luck because Shades Direct offers plenty of other outdoor shade solutions in a variety of colours and styles including outdoor screens (both clear

PVC and Mesh fabrics), shade sails and retractable folding arm awnings. The best part about the service at Shades Direct is that you’re dealing directly with the manufacturer and because of this, prices have never been better! The team also offer a FREE, no-obligation measure and quote and are happy to offer advice on the best outdoor solution for your home. By installing an awning from Shades Direct and enhancing the home, families will soon reap the benefits of having more space to do the outdoor things they love. Don’t wait, contact Shades Direct agent Scott on 021 957 535 or free phone 0800 SHADES (0800 742 337). For further information visit www.shadesdirect.co.nz

nomic conditions with 53 per cent of respondents citing this as a concern – up slightly from 52 per cent in 2017. This was followed closely with New Zealand’s the aging population (53 per cent - down from 57 per cent in 2017) and new legislation (50 per cent up from 39 per cent in 2017). Other trends viewed as having the greatest impact on the real estate industry are people moving from larger cities to small towns (50 per cent down from 52 per cent), immigration (39 per cent down significantly from 65 per cent in 2017) and more apartments/terraced houses being built (36 per cent down from 43 per cent). “When we last surveyed the profession back in 2017, the issue that the industry felt could have the greatest impact was interest rates with 69 per cent of respondents citing that as their top trend. As interest rates have continued to fall over the last two years, it’s now 9th on the list,” says Norwell.

Brown claims backto-back TRI-Factors A day after the All Blacks opened their Rugby World Cup campaign, 12-time New Zealand Ironman champion Cameron Brown, who performed the haka at the pre-race press conference, clinched a comfortable win at the inaugural TRI-Factor (TF) World Championship 2019 in Quzhou, China. In front of thousands of excited Chinese supporters, crowd favourite Brown – from Dannemora - won the TF Enduro (Elite) triathlon which consists of a 1.5km swim, 80km cycle and 20km run in 3:25:40 to take home the title. The 47-year-old exited the swim 55 seconds behind Irishman Colin O’Shea, but caught O’Shea early in the cycling leg and never looked back O’Shea (3:41:40) eventually finished 16minutes behind Brown while Rondina Leonard (3:45:40) of the Philippines was a further four minutes back in third position. “The city of Quzhou really got behind the race and the atmosphere on the entire race course was amazing,”

said Brown who also won TF Quzhou in 2017. “The marshalls and volunteers were fantastic and I’m not surprised that the race was sold-out. More and more people are learning about this race and will want to come to visit Quzhou. The start-finish line is pretty special and it’s not every day you get to finish in front of an ancient citygate as magnificient as Shui Ting Men. I really enjoy the mountains and scenery here and I’ll definitely come back here and try for a three-peat”. Tri-Factor Quzhou China is the season finale to the TRIFactor Asia Series.

t was a classic case of “he who dares wins” when the All Blacks overcame first quarter jitters to open their Rugby World Cup campaign in Japan with a thrilling 23-13 win against South Africa. Seventeen of those points were posted in a second quarter blink of an eye with Beauden Barrett sprinting through a narrow gap to provide George Bridge’s try under the posts and Anton Lienert-Brown splitting the Boks defence apart for Scott Barrett to gallop 40 metres for the second touchdown. Add a Richie Mo’unga penalty and the All Blacks led 17-3 at half-time, having broken the fierce, robust Boks’ early stranglehold when the fumbling champions treated the ball like a hot potato. Full marks to selectors Steve Hansen, Grant Fox and Ian Foster for sticking with the Mo’unga and Beauden Barrett twin playmaking roles at first-five

and fullback respectively. Both were simply too good not to start - Mo’unga’s crosskicks to lively right wing Sevu Reece sparking sharp attacks and Barrett’s lightning thrusts out wide causing havoc. There were other heroes, notably workaholic Scott Barrett who filled the big boots of the injured Brodie Retallick beyond everyone’s expectation and Ardie Savea who has become a fast and furious superstar. It was skipper Kieran Read whose firm chat calmed his players down after their nervous start and halfback Aaron Smith added an improved kicking game to his slick passing. While critics continue to criticise the muscular Boks for relying too much on their kicking game and physicality, they remain dangerous foes who cannot be under-estimated once they graduate from pool play. Nevertheless, this was

Agnew’s Angle

a timely psychological victory for the All Blacks and masterly head coach Hansen who has a happy knack of peaking his players when it counts most. Not that it was perfect. The scrum buckled when the starting front row of Joe Moody, Dane Coles and Nepo Laulala was replaced and there was some wonky throwing to the lineout. However there were also some wonderful moments, especially when Beaudy Barrett, Savea and Reece were in full flight - and some great tackling, none better than Mo’unga’s trysaver against little crackerjack wing Cheslin Kolbe. Full praise also to defence coach Scott McLeod who has done a good job since taking over the role of former maestro Wayne Smith. As backs coach, Foster also deserves credit although his Super Rugby history with the Chiefs wasn’t flash before Dave Rennie taught them how to win. The coaches would also

have been relieved Sonny Bill Williams survived his second half stint and played solidly upon replacing the ever reliable Ryan Crotty. With Ireland and Scotland favoured to qualify from Pool A they should play South Africa and New Zealand respectively in the quarter-finals provided Japan don’t upset the Scots on October 13. Ireland have started strongly with a 27-3 triumph over Scotland and England and France look favourites to graduate from Pool C. However England’s 35-3 win against Tonga didn’t set the Thames on fire compared with the All Blacks 93-7 pre-tournament walloping of the same opponents. Hopefully the All Blacks will stick with their “ he who dares wins” philosophy that has won them the Webb Ellis Trophy a record three times. Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer
