What is an ERO evaluation? T he purpose of EROs external evaluation is to give parents and the wider school community assurance about the quality of education children receive. ERO reports on the equity and excellence of learning outcomes for all students and for specific groups including Maori students,
Pacific students and students with additional learning needs. This includes a focus on accelerating learning for students. ERO also reports on the quality and effectiveness of the school’s processes and practices for continuing and sustaining improvements.
Strong leadership combined with pastoral care
L
ong-serving Principal Alan McIntyre is ably supported by a senior leadership team at the school, with a roll of 916 students – a rich multicultural mix of over 57 different cultures. The school leadership team works collaboratively to provide an ideal place for learners, as it offers many opportunities encouraging students to participate in a variety of valuable leadership activities. Being an inclusive place of learning, an absolute standout is the strong ethos of the Owairoa ‘family’. A sense of caring and a family feeling amongst teachers, staff, Board of Trustees and Parent Teacher Association permeates into the values system of the school. Strong pastoral care combined with leadership development
provides an environment for children to work in a settled, attractive and supportive learning environment, characterised by respectful teacher-student relationships. International Students are integrated well within the school community. They can access quality pastoral care and education and the school monitors and supports their well-being, progress and achievement. Parents of International Students participate well in the school’s ‘Parent Class’ programme, which further supports their children’s integration into the school. Making the school a very special and safe place is the school’s focus, promoting student, staff and family’s positive well-being, which is an integral part of the school culture.
Equitable and excellent outcomes
O
wairoa Primary School, catering for students from Years 1-6, shows consistency in achieving equitable and excellent outcomes for students. Most achieve at or above the school’s expectations in reading and mathematics and a large
majority in writing. Teachers provide a professional learning journey and create memories as they implement well-planned and richly resourced learning programmes that respond to students’ strengths and needs. There is a huge focus
on supporting students to become independent and inquiring. A rich curriculum and responsive teaching styles are the key practices enabling the school to achieve equity and excellence, that assists students to cope with a fast-changing world.

MP Simeon Brown congratulates Owairoa Primary School
P
akuranga is home to some of the best schools in the country through Primary level, Intermediate and College. I am proud of the hard work our local teachers put in every day to ensuring our children receive a world class education. Owairoa Primary’s positive recent ERO report is evi-
dence of the strength of our local education network and I extend my congratulations to the School Board, Principal, teachers, parents, and of course, the students. We are fortunate in Pakuranga to have access to schools like Owairoa, and I know they will continue to offer a top notch primary education into the future.
Education Minister’s endorsement
Celebrating achievement
K
ey strengths of the school include a rich, broad, localised and inclusive curriculum which is well monitored and tracked for consistency and high quality. Partnership with parents, a buddy system for new students,
a bullying hotline email and daily mindfulness exercises prioritise student well-being and provide pathways to stimulating and quality education that creates lifelong learners. A family/whanau partnership together with a strong focus on
student well-being and teacher’s deep knowledge of students and their families contributes greatly towards the success of the school. Students’ high achievement and the individualised strategies teachers implement support and accelerate their learning progress.

Hope for Erebus Memorial
T
he Howick-based spokesperson for the Erebus National Memorial proposed for a Parnell park is hopeful the plan gets the go-ahead next week. Rev Dr Richard Waugh, who is also an aviation chaplain and historian, is keenly awaiting a decision by the Waitemata Local Board next Tuesday. It follows a lengthy advocacy campaign for a national memorial which began in early 2016 to commemorate those who died on November 28, 1979 when their plane flew into Mt Erebus. It is New Zealand’s worst peacetime accident and still the worst air accident in the Southern Hemisphere. The National Erebus Memorial is proposed
to be erected at Dove-Meyer Robinson Park (Parnell Rose Gardens). The problem is a group of Parnell residents oppose the plan. The Parnell group is against the construction of a memorial to the 257 people who died when Air New Zealand flight 901 crashed into Erebus Radio NZ reported that two residents – one whose husband lost his father in the crash – say the park is too small and the memorial too big. “They say earthworks will damage the roots of a nearby pohutukawa tree whose swooping branches local children love to climb. They say the lawn the structure is proposed for is a picnic spot, a happy place, a destination for canoodling young lovers, for
eating fish and chips and drinking a glass of wine, for kids to play with a ball. The memorial will ruin all that, they say,” RNZ reported. But Rev Waugh said that, from the outset, they had always encountered positive support for the Erebus National Memorial. “In fact it was frequently mentioned by others that such a memorial was long overdue and that Erebus families have been pastorally neglected for many years,” he said. “While there are smaller memorials at various sites for the unidentified, people who were never found, and crew, there has never been any significant public place where all 257 names are displayed, where families can gather to remember and have special times of prayer and reflection – and where our nation
can appropriately commemorate the tragedy. “Parnell is one of New Zealand’s most historic and beautiful suburbs. Residents have the privilege of embracing the Erebus families with the Erebus National Memorial, on behalf of the whole country.” Dove-Meyer Park is ideal, he said, in fulfilling what the families asked for; a central accessible site, with historical – including aviation – relevance, a beautifully creative designed memorial – and not placed in a cemetery. “I would say to the people of Parnell, don’t be put off by negative nay-sayers; instead you are privileged to host have one of New Zealand’s very special memorials.” ■■ Visit www.erebusnationalmemoral.nz

ehind every good man there’s a great woman, the old saying goes and Santa Claus couldn’t do all the good deeds without his number one supporter and helper. Mrs Claus isn’t usually publicly acknowledged, known for her extensive work behind the scenes as she makes sure Santa has all the presents he needs for his marathon gift-giving delivery run on the night of Christmas Eve. But this Christmas, for the Howick Santa Parade on Sunday, December 8, Mrs Claus is making a special rare public appearance. It’s the 66th running of the parade and Mrs Claus is taking her place in it alongside the elves before her headlineact husband, Santa, makes his entrance at the end of what will be a colourful display of all that is good in the East Auckland community. Chief parade organising elf and event manager Bo Burns, of the Howick Children’s Charitable Trust, is thrilled so many local groups want to march in the Santa parade. “Christmas is for everyone,

but especially for the children, that’s why it’s so pleasing to have most of the groups involving our wonderful young people,” she says. “It gives them an opportunity to show the community their talents and commitment. We have 60 groups marching in the parade including six schools, as well as sports, recreation, dance, activity and service organisations, and local businesses. It will be a wonderful show of our community.” Burns is encouraging families and friends to make a day of it by enjoying the pre-parade entertainment in Picton Street that starts from 11am, before the parade rolls at 2.30pm. “We’re creating a carnival atmosphere that will have something to enjoy for people of all ages,” she says. The official opening for the Howick Santa Parade event is at 11am, followed by entertaining performances by Legacy Studios, a K-Pop dance crew, Red Dance, Cockle Bay School’s kapa haka Christmas, the Eastern Stars band and the Alan Watson magic show. Parading groups start
lining up in Fencible Drive and adjacent car parks from 12.15pm, before marching on the route of Wellington Street, Picton Street and Cook Street from 2.30pm. For those people who cannot attend the parade in person, they can watch it online. Sponsors and facilitators of the Howick Santa Parade include the Howick Children’s Charitable Trust, Barfoot and Thompson, Andrew Simms, the Howick Local Board, Lion Foundation, the Howick Club, New World, Galbraiths Law, Howick & Pakuranga Times and many smaller donations and help from supportive local businesses.

MP aims to axe fuel tax
Injury following accident
Police were called to reports of a single vehicle crash Ti Rakau Drive, Pakuranga, about 6pm on Monday. One person was taken to Middlemore Hospital in serious condition. It is understood the person had to be removed from the vehicle via cutting equipment.
Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross has put together a Members’ Bill that would repeal the Auckland regional fuel tax. It would also remove the ability for the Government to roll out such taxes across New Zealand. The tax was implemented in July 2018 to fund Auckland Council transport projects. Ross says the Government has increased fuel taxes in Auckland by about 25 cents a litre overall.

The Grants each face four charges of ‘Obtaining by deception’ and one charge of ‘Attempted obtaining by deception’. The four defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges and have been remanded on bail to reappear in the Auckland District Court on February 18.

Free fares on Go Bus Go Bus drivers in south and east Auckland will continue their strike action over a “bitter” employment dispute with the company by offering free fares to passengers from this morning until Christmas Eve, FIRST Union said today. More than 110 FIRST Union members at several Go Bus depots
(East Tamaki, Mangere/Airport) went on strike over a month ago following a long-awaited bargaining meeting that the company used to signal their intention to cancel future negotiations with the union. Since that meeting, bus drivers have held both partial strike actions like offering free fares as well as full
withdrawals of labour that have seen relations with the company deteriorate, the union said. “The drivers are tired and frustrated but are standing strong,” said Jared Abbott, FIRST Union Secretary for Transport, Logistics and Manufacturing. A free fares protest is a great way for bus drivers to continue the strike in a non-disruptive fashion while engaging with their passengers and communities.”
ineteen thousand kilometres is a long way to travel for truffles, but for Farm Cove local Jasbir Kaur it’s all in a day’s work. The general manager of Manukau private training provider Ignite Colleges, Jasbir is also an award-winning chef and president of the Auckland branch of the NZChefs Association. And if that’s not enough, she’s made it her lifework to promote New Zealand cuisine on the world stage and bring international flavour Down Under. Tomorrow Jasbir boards a flight to Spain where she’ll be one of 10 internationally-acclaimed chefs selected to judge the world truffles competition, Cocinando Con Trufa (Cooking with Truffle). Now in its second year, the event takes place in Soria from December 2-4 and draws competitors from all over the world keen to showcase their culinary prowess. “Global cooking competitions are breaking down boundaries, enabling chefs to build their reputations internationally and gain exposure to different cuisines and cooking styles,” says Jasbir. “While I’m there I’ll also be working hard to promote New Zealand cuisine and will bring back lots of fresh ideas to share with my cookery students at Ignite Colleges.” Ignite’s state-of-the-art cookery school is a launchpad for New Zealand’s next generation of top chefs, thanks in part to Jasbir’s innova-

Earlier this month she was flown to Valladolid, Spain, the only international judge on a panel of eight top chefs tasked with selecting Spain’s national tapas champion. Together with her fellow judges – all renowned Michelin starred chefs – Jasbir rated contestants across a range of categories including flavour, presentation and commercial viability. “The level of creativity and amazing combination of flavours we saw in these competition dishes were extraordinary and among the best I’ve ever experienced.” And she has certainly experienced plenty. Not only was Jasbir a competitor in the 2017 World Tapas Championships, she is also the driving force behind the Australasian Tapas Championships, an annual competition hosted by Ignite Colleges which sees leading chefs from Australia and New Zealand battle it out for a spot at the World Champs.

Very few downsides to downsizing say local seniors. And they’re off – the start of the Sea-Doo King of Adventure Fishing at Eastern Beach. Photo supplied
Jetski fishing taking off T
he sport of Jetski fishing is growing massively throughout the world and east Auckland is witnessing its strongest growth internationally with the Sea-Doo Global Brand Ambassador (Andrew Hill) being based in Auckland and event organiser of New Zealand’s biggest jet-ski only fishing competition. This year’s event had 120 anglers registered, all leaving from Eastern Beach bright and early to head out fishing in search of their fish for weigh-in. The event encourages responsible riding and is a familyfriendly day with plenty of riders taking their children or partners. With a $16,000 Prize pool, the event was an enjoyable day for all, said Hill.
Results for major prizes:
■■ Woman’s heaviest snapper, Andrea Ungerer 4.75kg ■■ Kids’ heaviest snapper, Milan Wilson 1.80kg ■■ Heaviest Kahawai, Mark Greenfield 1.45kg ■■ Heaviest “other’ species, Mark Greenfield 3.35kg (Trevally) ■■ Legend of Adventure Fishing (most species) x 3, Mark Greenfield ■■ Heaviest snapper. For some seniors, the idea of downsizing from a family home to a smaller apartment can be overwhelming. For many, it’s a catalyst to move forward and start really enjoying life. It’s no surprise that many seniors choose to stay in their own home for as long as they can. That’s where the memories are – where you’ve lived, loved and raised a family. But eventually, that large family home can become a burden, with high maintenance, large power and rates bills – and it can be expensive to ‘future-proof’ as you get older or need assistance. Conversely, for many, downsizing into an apartment is a chance for a fresh start – to be part of a community, meet new people, travel more and enjoy a ‘lock-up and leave’ lifestyle. Moving into one of HBH Senior Living’s modern, low-maintenance apartments was the biggest – and best – decision Joyce Kraak ever made. “I was reluctant to move out of my family home, but I just wasn’t keeping up with
the maintenance,” she says. “Here, the building is modern and warm, so I have smaller power bills. And HBH takes care of the maintenance, so I’m getting out and enjoying life a lot more.” A recent survey showed that 95% of HBH’s apartment residents wish they’d made the move earlier and Joyce is certainly one of these happy residents. “I love it here,” she exclaims. “It’s a small, friendly, inclusive community with shops and everything else I need nearby. I have a better social life than I’ve had in years!”
Downsizing – where to start? Reducing your possessions can feel like it’s just too big a task to even get started. So
we’ve put together a few pointers:
A little bit of magic
1. Start small. Choose a small area within a room or even a drawer that needs sorting out and make a start.
Midnight Madness, the massive, magical night when the street is closed off and families and friends flock into Howick’s closed-off mainstreet for a night of shopping, eating and fun, was another big hit on Friday. Times photographer Wayne Martin was there. More on page 7.
3. Create a list and tick it off as you go. You’ll soon see that you’re making progress.
2. Do a little bit often. Put aside a morning, a day, or a week for ‘project downsize’.
4. Enlist help! Ask a family member or friend to lend a hand. There are also many downsizing experts who can help you make objective decisions. 5. Don’t get too precious. Think carefully about each item. When was the last time you used it? Does it have sentimental value? Do you love it or need it? 6. Re-purpose the things you don’t need. Is there someone else who would use it? Can you sell it, give it away, or take it to a local charity? As they say, someone’s trash is always someone else’s treasure.
How much do our apartment residents love living here? Well, 95% wish they’d made the move earlier. HBH’s apartments offer the freedom of independent living, with help on hand if you need it. So why not make the move? Like our other residents, you may just love it.

Over the past months Howick Valley has seen a number of changes with relocating businesses, new businesses and new business owners in to the Valley. Howick Auto Electrical moved a few blocks up the road (same side but closer to Union road) to bigger premises and is now a one stop shop for your car and Marine requirements.
Manager, Dion heads up a team of six. Chapman Collision Repair in Wellington street has a new owner Brad Jackson with the day to day running left in the capable hands of Manager Greg Du Preez. These guys work with most major insurers so if your car body needs work give them a buzz. George VacullkHamilton of AGG Motor
Cycles moved from Union Road to Elliot Street. George, who has loads of experience, does basic bike repairs through to a full bike rebuild, he also stocks clothing and bike accessories which could make an ideal Christmas gift. Jayes Dance is now in Moore street and is looking great with its new makeover, which was once
Mobile Ceramics for many years. Stacy is still creating amazing talented dancers from this studio. Lucky’s Barcade & Social has taken over the Dart club in Elliot street and B.K Sharma tells me they have one of the largest LED screens in the country, and the longest Happy hour in town. So you can see just from these changes Howick Valley has plenty to offer.
From Howick to Warsaw The Polish Museum in Howick was part of an official exhibition, ‘Journey of Hope 75 Years Pahiatua Children in New Zealand’, which was open on Krakowskie Przedmiescie Street in Warsaw, near the presidential palace. The exhibition, under the patronage of the President of Poland, was launched at an official function hosted by the New Zealand
Embassy in Poland. One of the large street side panels features stunning photographs of Polish museum staff and founders, taken in Howick by Howick and Pakuranga Times photographer, Wayne Martin. The Polish Museum celebrated 75 Years of the Polish children in New Zealand with the annual afternoon tea for
families, including singing of the national anthems of Poland and New Zealand and a slideshow of images collected of the children’s arrival in 1944 with their caregivers, plus snapshots of their lives in New Zealand.

Midnight Madness magic! H
owick Village celebrated the start of the Christmas season on Friday with our annual event – Midnight Madness. There was an array of music and dance entertainment, great shopping promotions, market stalls, elves, butterflies, Kombi train rides and our first ever Children’s Zone, to entertain the younger generation in our community. Santa’s new Grotto in Central Terrace had a steady stream of visitors to meet the ‘man in red’. The event was vibrant and alive and we welcomed some special ‘ladies’ who enjoyed mixing and mingling with the crowds and endured endless photo requests. The Village’s annual ‘Shop and Win’ promotion started at Midnight Madness and will continue through to December 20 – shop in the Village and be in to win some fabulous prizes. Check out our Facebook pages for a selection of images from the night –
howickvillageshopping/midnightmadness It was disappointing however, to see the large amount of unsupervised youth who took the opportunity to create mischief without any parental or adult supervision. The extra Police staff, security and community patrols kept these groups in their sights and dealt with any unwelcomed issues as they arose. Sadly, this anti-social, unsupervised behaviour may jeopardise future events in the Village. Howick Village Association would like to thank the Howick community for coming along to support Midnight Madness 2019. Jane Newbury, Manager Howick Village Association

hirty-five per cent of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence. As part of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence—an international campaign that aims to inspire action and end violence against women and girls around the world—the Zonta Club of east Auckland, along with members of Shakti raised awareness of the International campaign in Howick recently. The 2018 Zonta Says No to Violence Against Women campaign will match Zonta International’s efforts to help end child marriage which, this year alone, will affect more than 12 million girls worldwide, according to Girls Not Brides. At the local level, Zonta clubs across the world have organised activities and events as part of the Zonta Says No to Violence Against Women campaign, which focuses on the service and advocacy actions of Zonta clubs and districts to prevent and end violence against women and girls in their local communities. “Early marriage is probably the most appalling act of violence against girls. It is closely associated with and often triggers other forms of violence,” says Zonta International President Susanne von Bassewitz.

“Under the umbrella of Zonta Says No, Zonta members and clubs around the world will not only provide funding, but engage in advocacy activities as well to end child marriage.” Each year during the 16 Days of Activism campaign, which runs from November 25 to December 10, Zonta International encourages its clubs to participate in advocacy efforts that focus on prevention, protection and prosecution. This year, the Zonta Club of East Auckland is focusing on ending child marriage, a national and global human right’s violation as the centerpiece. A display highlighting the
issues was showcased recently at the Howick Library. A speaker from Shakti also made a presentation. Shakti is a Women’s Refuge associate member that provides culturally appropriate domestic violence intervention services to women of Asian, African and Middle Eastern origin and their children regardless of age, immigration status, religion and sexual orientation. Zonta East Auckland meets monthly, for fellowship with a purpose – the purpose being improving the status of women and girls on a local level, nationally and internationally through service and advocacy.
More than 9000 people at Cherry Blossom Festival
NEW FREE FAMILY EVENT
By FARIDA MASTER Not many are aware that Sir Barry Curtis (pictured, bottom left at right of shot) former mayor of Manukau for 24 years, had a big role to play in the building of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple at Stancombe Rd. “I had the pleasure of joining the most Venerable Hsin Ting, the Abbot of Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order headquarters to officiate at the sod turning ceremony to celebrate the commencement of construction of this magnificent temple,” he said at the formal ceremony of the Cherry Blossom Festival held along with the Art Salon Finale at the temple. The event was attended by special guests including top ranking police, the Race Relations Commissioner, diplomats, councillors and Howick Local Board members. “Before 1999, a decision had been taken by the temple Trust Committee to purchase a large area of land to accommodate the proposed temple complex some 1000 metres to the east. I advised the committee that the Manukau City Council was completing the acquisition of 290 acres of rural land at the Southern Eastern intersection of Stancombe Rd and Chapel Rd to create a large park for recreational use to cater to the fast expanding population in the proposed Howick-Wiri
along Queens Rd

Corridor,” he said. “I expressed the view that the Trust Committee should abandon the purchase entered into and rather acquire land at the strategic location at the entry to the park and a magnificent outlook over a beautiful public open space.” Sir Barry also acknowledged Dolly Tsai and her husband Ming Tai Huang who donated the first 4.5 acres (1.82ha) of
land with the Trust purchasing a further 4.5 acres. He gave credit to Abbess Manshin and her team as he presented her with a plaque to record the creation of the tranquil gardens. On last count, the Cherry Blossom Festival that hosted an awe-inspiring art exhibition and had a variety of stalls on the forecourt was attended by more than 9000 people on Sunday.

National to invest in quality education MP for Pakuranga
Simeon Brown
A
s the MP for Pakuranga, an electorate with some of the best schools in the country, I know just how a good education can transform lives. With the right education we can overcome the challenges some children face purely because of the circumstances they were born into. That’s why education is one of National’s core investment priorities. National’s Education Discussion Document outlines many proposals we want your feedback on, and reconfirms our commitments. As National’s Associate Spokesperson for Education I have been heavily involved in this document and am looking forward to your feedback. In Early Childhood Education (ECE) we continue to focus on the quality of education and care our children receive in those foundation years, so we’re proposing spot checks on ECE services to ensure they are meeting the required standards. National will also support teachers so they can spend more time actually teaching.
Last year Simon Bridges announced a National Government would reduce class sizes at primary level. We are committed to this policy and have now released draft student-teacher ratios for feedback. More time with a teacher means more opportunities for children to ask questions and get answers, and for teachers to focus on areas where a child may be struggling. But smaller class sizes also means a need for more teachers. National is proposing a number of ways, including financial incentives, to attract more people to the profession, or to get people to return to teaching. We’re also considering changes to initial teacher training, which include strengthening practicum requirements, accredited schools involved in teacher training and more support for teachers who mentor new ones. A quality education comes
from our teachers, but it also comes from a strong curriculum. We want local curriculum to thrive and teachers to have world class curriculum resources. Children must leave school with firm foundations in core areas of reading, writing and maths. National also wants your feedback on tertiary education, like first year Fees Free, which has been an expensive failure and whether we should scrap it or replace it with an alternative. Our Education Discussion Document is part of the biggest policy development process undertaken by an Opposition ever. We’re doing the work now so we’re ready to hit the ground running in 2020. You can view and document and submit your thoughts at www.national.org.nz/education. Simeon Brown MP for Pakuranga

Wills and enduring powers of attorney SOLUTIONS, with the CITIZENS ADVICE BUREAU
assistance to become active. Your family lawyer knows how to put your needs into words. The critical thing is to do this while you still have the capacity to do so; a lawyer will not set in place an EPA for someone thought to be incapable. In that case time and money must be spent to have the Court appoint attorneys all of which might well have been avoided. A property EPA can come into effect before you lose mental capacity but a Personal Care and Welfare EPA can only be actioned if a medical professional decides you have become ‘mentally incapable’. This Solutions Column has been compiled by Graeme and is a regular editorial from the Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau. Visit us at the Library Building, Pakuranga, Phone 576 8331 or at Botany Citizens Advice Bureau, rear Food Court Entrance, Botany Town Centre, Phone 271 5382 or 0800 267 222 for free, confidential and informative help.
A
re you thinking of setting up or updating your Will? A do-it-yourself Will may suit simple family circumstances. A family lawyer will offer more certainty in ensuring your final wishes are carried out, which can extend to preparing documents to be used in Court if your will is contested, and the cost is less than the costs incurred in having the will validated by the Court. Such documents are likely more secure if held by the lawyer. At the same time think about setting up an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA). Most of us think we will be fit and well until the moment we die, however, this may not always be the case. There are two sorts of EPAs: Personal Care and Welfare or Property (money and assets). We could become physically or mentally incapacitated and need help in managing one, or both, of
these areas of our lives. This is where your nominated attorney, a person or people you can trust to do things for you, comes in. There are many ways to define who the attorneys are, when they can act, what limitations you want on what they can do, etc. You may want to consider “successor” attorneys to ensure continuity of the document if an attorney is not able to continue for any reason. Many retirement or health care organisations insist on EPA being in place before they offer their services. Although there are ways to create a document yourself, it will still need legal
MECOSS looking for volunteers If you’re interested in paying forward, here is an opportunity. Manukau East Council of Social Services (MECOSS) is seeking volunteer drivers and companions for its shopping shuttle. Every Thursday, the shuttle takes people, who often live alone or and no longer drive to Botany Town Centre or Pakuranga Plaza for shopping and a cuppa. They have a chance to talk, ask questions, walk around and form friendships. Drivers are mainly responsible for arranging the times and routes for pick-ups and delivering their passengers safely. Companion’s help clients get into and out of the vehicle and assist with seatbelts. They can also book a walker or scooter for passengers to use at the shopping centres if required. ■■ If you are interested phone Maureen on 0800 632 677.

Watling, Santner show true grit H
aving completed their first double century and century respectively in the first cricket test against England at Tauranga’s Bay Oval on Sunday, BJ Watling and Mitchell Santner epitomised true grit. It is that special quality that has enabled the Black Caps to perform beyond expectations on the world stage in a sport which has glorified the feats of Australia, India, the West Indies, England, Pakistan and South Africa over the years. West Indies no longer have the feared pace bowling attack nor destructive batsmen like Viv Richards and Brian Lara they once did and South Africa’s form has diminished too. Now with India, Australia and England regarded as the game’s heavyweights, New Zealand have
punched well above their weight, finishing runner-up in the last two ODI World Cups to Australia and England respectively. Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Neil Wagner combine to add swing, seam and bounce to the pace attack and 150km per hour speedster Lockie Ferguson adds menace at ODI and T20 level. Hard-hitting allrounder Colin de Grandhomme offers guile with his medium pace and although no spinner of Daniel Vettori’s class has emerged, Santner is being rewarded for tossing the ball up with his variable flight. Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor are truly world class batsmen. The admirable Guptill was at ODI level and Henry Nicholls and Tom Latham have developed nicely. Add the power play of Colin
Munro, Jimmy Neesham and de Grandhomme and the potential for fast scoring is there although all three can be a bit reckless. Not so No 7 and 8 batsmen Watling and Santner, who showed with their remarkable 206 not out and unbeaten 105 on Sunday a maturity that bodes well for the future. That astonishing innings and 65-run victory gave the Black Caps their seventh series triumph in an unbeaten run over 32 months and they have lost just one of 16 at home. Up until now I had thought Ian Smith the best wicket keeper/batsman NZ has produced. But having taken his test average over 40 to become his country’s ninth most successful test batsman, Watling has surpassed him with the willow.
Watling has a happy habit of digging in and producing his best when his team most needs him. It’s a knack fellow South African-born Neil Wagner also possesses when asked to bowl. Wagner was outstanding once more in taking five wickets for 44 runs before England’s second innings folded for 197. Left arm spinner Santner grabbed three for 53 but it was flying right hand catch of Ollie Pope off Wagner that will live longest in the memory. Other nations can and do produce more glittering stars. But when you add the excellence of New Zealand’s fielding, a champion team can beat a team of champions, especially when it has a captain of Williamson’s superb temperament. He and the swashbuckling Brendan McCullum are like chalk
Agnew’s Angle and cheese but very effective, as was Stephen Fleming before them. Martin Crowe favourite Ross Taylor didn’t last long as skipper but, with Williamson, became the batting anchor and a major contributor to the team’s success. Santner’s first test ton will hopefully be the first of many. A single handicap golfer, he’s capable of hitting boundaries with consummate ease and ensure the tail wags happily. Ivan Agnew is an award-winning sports writer

‘Trashmagination’ wows at Riverhills
S
MoleMap ‘on the spot’ in Pakuranga MoleMap has opened a modern, new clinic at Pakuranga Medical Centre in Cortina Place, so that locals can have regular, thorough skin and mole checks without having to leave East Auckland. MoleMap offers a thorough skin check for every body and budget, whether you want the total reassurance of their most comprehensive service – a Full Body MoleMap – or the peace of mind of a one-off skin check. The biggest benefit of MoleMap over self-checking or seeing your GP is that they don’t just check skin, they spot change. They do this by combining their proven skin-mapping system with skin cancer expertise to track changes in the skin over time. It’s an effective way to detect melanoma early, when it’s most treatable. “We’re thrilled to be right here in the heart of Pakuranga,” says Juanita Stulich, MoleMap’s Clinical OperaHP_MAZDA_251119-howpak.pdf 2 25/11/19
tions Manager. “Regular Full Body MoleMaps are essential to reducing the risk of melanoma, so we encourage our patients to have their skin professionally checked every year. We thoroughly check every spot from head to toe, plus our skin-mapping system monitors even the smallest changes to your skin and moles over time.” Open 5 days a week from 9am to 5pm (bookings essential), you’ll find MoleMap’s new clinic at Pakuranga Medical Centre, 11-13 Cortina Place, Pakuranga. Book online at www.molemap.co.nz, or call their friendly support team on 0800 665 362. 3:16 PM
tudents from Riverhills School have been using their imaginations to create outfits out of unwanted materials for their show ‘Trashmagination’. After months of work carefully designing and constructing extraordinary outfits, the students were excited to share their creations with friends and whanau last week. “They worked collaboratively in groups to create their outfits and compose digital music tracks to accompany their look on the stage,” says Riverhills principal, Sarah Allen. “It was a real team effort that required perseverance, problem solving and a ‘can-do’ attitude.” ‘Trashmagination’ was presented in three sections - diversity, nature and future. Each group took inspiration from one of these themes and worked with a selection of materials in their construction. Year 4 student Ailey Hay said that her group was motivated to make a dress out of chip packets to protect sea creatures, who eat plastics that end up in the ocean. ‘Te Fiti’ was modelled by Annabel Huang and created by her Year 0/1 classmates out of wood sacks, wallpaper, plastic cups and

The children also made paper flowers, grass and leaves for the outfit. As an Enviroschool, Riverhills has been focusing on reducing the waste they are sending to landfill. Classes have led to a number of waste reduction initiatives resulting in litter-free lunches, increased composting and worm farming and streamlined systems for sorting waste. ‘Trashmagination’ brought the community together to celebrate the children in their endeavours to be kaitiaki of the environment.

When we first opened our business, we started advertising with Times Media. We had a lot of response which boosted our practice, getting people through the door. Advertising in the Times newspapers is a really great way of maintaining continuity and having a presence in our community.
Society, like a business, has a reserve of good will and it is undesirable to undermine such goodwill. Recently the “Equal Pay Awards” were celebrated and the “Gender Pay Gap” was highlighted – if only it were an ethical representation; and I suspect the overall winner, Chorus, knows this. If I have a large room of workers and I sort them into part time workers (left) and full time workers (right) then I will have more women on the left – by the Gender Pay Gap calculation a disparity occurs against women; because more women work part time. Another room, this time of women only, and sort them into ‘gay’ and ‘straight’ - by the Gender Pay Gap calculation a disparity occurs against straight women; gay women generally earn more than straight women. Another room of people, male and female, sort them into those over 6’ tall - by the Gender Pay Gap calculation, a disparity occurs in favour of tall people. Constantly dividing society by arbitrary ‘identities’ undermines social cohesion and makes some people wrongfully feel victimised. The crudely calculated Gender Pay Gap is one such narrative. If the Equal Pay Awards was one of progress in addressing Discriminatory Pay Gaps then I would be happy but instead it focuses on a deliberately false narrative to push an ideological agenda. Our society is not perfect and gender pay inequalities need to be addressed but not within a false premise that erodes societal goodwill.

Protect our kerb stones
The old basalt kerb-stones in upper Moore Street have recently been replaced with new concrete kerbing. The kerb stones in Picton Street have considerable historical and aesthetic value. They were laid in 1931 when the concrete road was officially opened joining Howick to Auckland City. The basalt kerb-stones were made by Dalmatians in the Penrose quarry. We should all try to maintain these important links with our past, and I am sorry to see these hand-crafted kerb blocks removed. The remaining kerb stones must be protected.

Many weeks ago Auckland Transport dug up the road outside the Howick and Eastern bus depot on Ti Rakau Drive to create turning lanes and install traffic signals. The lanes were created and the traffic lights were installed. That work finished about a month ago. The lights were not made to work. Since that time the lovely new lanes have been blocked by orange cones. This means that buses wanting to go right out of the depot must go left, right at the Botany Rd lights and go through the shopping centre to u-turn at the roundabout, leave the shopping precinct, go right onto Botany

Love in the air: Tale of a high flying clandestine romance Guy Clapshaw and his wife have recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Guy, 82, a former Air New Zealand pilot and well known aviation author, met his wife Colleen when she was employed by the airline as a flight attendant. Back in 1969, Guy was an Air New Zealand DC-8 co-pilot and Colleen Simkin (as she was then) was a stewardess, both based in Los Angeles, California for two years. Air NZ regarded their young stewardesses as ambassadors to our country, they were handpicked to represent New Zealand, enjoying a status somewhere between film stars and fashion models, and male aircrew were forbidden to socialise with them off duty! Guy and Colleen often flew together, spending several days every month in Tahiti or Honolulu, and Guy
Rd and left onto Ti Rakau to commence their trip towards Pakuranga. If the bus is coming from the south, they must go around the block making more congestion on the Harris Rd area. This ridiculous situation is wasting time and fuel, not to mention the extra wear and tear on the precinct and local roads. Please, can your worthy newspaper find out why we cannot turn right out of and right into the depot, a manoeuvre the drivers have been doing without the benefit of the newly-created lanes since the depot was built all those years ago?

Climate is changing naturally Congratulations Celia Martin on your published letter of November 14. It sums up the ‘Climate Warming Hoax’ very clearly. As you comment, the science reveals no CO2 heating effect on the air temperatures. We need to encourage all our politicians to put a stop to their misinformation. The best way to achieve that is at the ballot box at election time. NZers respect informed people in parliament, not flakey conformists.

fell under Colleen’s spell. They began a secret romance, in contravention of company regulations, never being seen in public together. They even sat apart on the crew bus or when dining with other crew members on night stops to avoid suspicion. Based in Los Angeles in 1965, they played a game of cloak and dagger when confronted by the exacting moral standards of the time. An air hostess dating a captain would have ended in instant dismissal, but as their two year overseas assignment was about to end, so the lovebirds threw caution to the wind and announced they were getting married at the end of the contract. 50 years, and two grown up sons later, the couple are flying to Tahiti to celebrate their golden anniversary, and plan for the next 50!
Hot air extinction
The Extinction Rebellion protesters who harassed the Gas Industry Forum in Christchurch seem not to have read my prior published Letters to the Editor revealing the facts that we are not going to starve, due to vertical farming, and we can improve the ability of each citizen to contribute to renewable resources if we addressed related NZ power grid issues. Recently a massive improvement to the sustainability of gas power generation has been achieved. The fundamental process behind this is called the Allam Cycle and it can burn natural gas while capturing 100 per cent of CO2. A pilot plant is proposed, located in New Plymouth. Further improvements can be made and stakeholders such as those at the Gas Industry Forum can contribute as could a stream of graduates in chemistry – assuming they finish school instead of taking days off to protest. To the activists, if you are not part of the solution then you are part of the problem. Instead of taking kids out of school to protest, go back to school, stop being such alarmist Luddites and low information people.

Alpacas dig deep to beat Papatoetoe Marie Raos Ray White HPCC Premier Men vs Papatoetoe By JIM ALLNATT The two clubs have a long history with many players from both sides having played in the Manukau Junior tournaments and Auckland age grades. In the early days our best players played for Papatoetoe as part of a district side so there is a real rivalry between the clubs and the matches at Premier level are always close. Now the teams play for the Hellaby Hunt Cup in the two day match so it was all on. It was a drama-filled two days’ play with both sides batting well below par in the first innings. Papatoetoe struggled to 144 against Grobbelaar 2/35, Jolley 2/31 Botadra 4/21 and Blandford 2/32. The Alpacas looked good with 59 on the board and only two wickets down but after Walshy went for 31 and Dan for 23 the boys failed to capitalise and finished the day seven wickets down and about 70 runs short. Day 2 saw the Alpacas put another 50 runs on the board and were bowled out 23 runs short at 121. Papatoetoe bowled really well, backed it up with good fielding and appealed regularly and earned the lead. However a good team always finds a way to win and as the deficit was only 23 and 81 overs were left in the day, the opportunity was there to win if we were good enough. The visitors put up stiff resistance. In the end Papatoetoe was bowled out for 161 in 37 overs. McEwen 2/49, Grobbelaar 2/18, Brown 2/36 and Jones 3/36 took wickets. That left a target of 186 to win in 41 overs. A pretty tough task but fair. The side had earned the chance by dismissing the opposition - no declaration. The run chase was nearly always on target but wickets fell at awkward times. Bill Walsh set a platform with 38 and Barnard, David Winn and Grobbelaar with 44, 37 and 26 respectively set the run chase up. With four overs to go HPCC was 167/7 and it was knife edge time again. Matt McEwan 17* and Adam Jones 7* held their nerve and with only three balls to go Macca drove the winning four.

Finn smashes a ton vs touring English By JIM BIRCHALL
all of that went out the window as soon as I looked up to see Jofra Archer steaming in at the top of his mark. I was definitely nervous to face him, especially watching him bowl before I walked out. However I found the longer I got to face him, the more comfortable I felt (although it’s never comfortable having the ball fizz past your grill every third delivery).”
L
ocal resident and former Saint Kentigern College student Finn Allen announced his arrival to international opposition with an impressive 104 (retired) versus the touring England team, when playing for a New Zealand XI in Whangarei recently. Allen unleashed a boundaryblitzkreig 10 fours and two sixes in a 130-ball stay against an attack that contained test regulars Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes, World Cup hero Ben Stokes and new pace sensation Jofra Archer. The innings was the next stage of development for the talented 20-year-old who has long been tipped for higher honours and is a current member of the Auckland Ace’s squad. The Times caught up with Finn this week and started by asking him how he found it facing Archer and Broad. “Challenging to say the least, the consistency and skill they have with the ball was probably the toughest part. I’ve also never faced a spell of bowling where I did more ducking and swaying than putting bat to ball, which was pretty cool to face but quite scary at the same time.”
What games do you have for Auckland coming up?
Finn Allen will be a pivotal part of the Auckland Aces in years to come. Photo: Auckland cricket
What was your mindset when you went out to bat? Play your natural game or dig in for a bit? “I tried my hardest to just focus on watching the ball, as opposed to who was delivering it which meant I could just stick to playing my natural game. However

“Currently the Ford Trophy (oneday) competition is underway in which we have a ridiculously good squad so I haven’t been able to crack the side to play yet, but fingers crossed I get an opportunity at some stage. Until then I’ve got plenty of cricket to play with Auckland A and for Suburbs New Lynn.”
Who are your favourite players? Who have you modelled your game after? “I’ve always loved watching Kevin Pietersen play, the way he went about his batting by taking it to the opposition and expressing himself was awesome to watch. Goodbye Nissan, hello Mustang The final round of the 2019 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship in Newcastle has brought to a close the ‘Nissan era’ for Kelly Racing and also for Andre Heimgartner. Next year will not only see the Dannemora driver continue on with the Kelly Racing team for a third year and on a new multiyear contract; he will also be steering one of the team’s brand new Ford Mustangs with the Altimas officially now retired from the main game. “It is sad to see the Datsun farewell tour now officially draw to a close,” Heimgartner said. “I have really enjoyed driving the Nissans with Kelly Racing over the past two years and doing all we could to get every inch of performance from them even when the odds were stacked against us; securing two podiums and five top 10 finishes along the way. “It was definitely a bit emotional out there today, knowing it was the last time I would be driving the old Nissan. It was a fun day out too. We didn’t quite have the speed to hang on to a top 10 result but we had a good start and some great battles; it was an enjoyable race to round out 2019 and now we leave Newcastle with a real fire in the belly for 2020.

“We have a lot of work to do between now and the test day in February but we are all very excited and I can’t wait to take those first laps in the Mustang at The Bend and to see what we can do across the 2020 season.” In Newcastle, Heimgartner and the #7 Plus Fitness Nissan Altima brought home 18th in Saturday’s race as the team struggled with set-up while on Sunday he ran within the top 10 for a large portion of the race before having to settle for 12th at the end of the 95 lap race. Heimgartner and Kelly Racing will next be on-track for the 2020 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship Official Test Day at The Bend Motorsport Park on February 18 before the race season opens at the Superloop Adelaide 500 across February 21-23.

he Pakuranga Choral Society, which began 45 years ago and is led this year by dynamic young local baritone Ben Kubiak, is preparing for its Christmas Variety Show. The show, on Sunday December 8, will have something for everyone and includes arrangements by Gustav Holst, Malcolm Sargent, John Rutter and David Hamilton plus popular WWII nostalgia as well as sing-along carols. Kubiak, who went to Macleans College, is the Pakuranga Choral Society’s conductor and is at present performing in Les Miserables at the Civic Theatre. He is in his second year studying for a PhD in musicology at the University of Auckland. He completed the Honours year of his Bachelor of Music degree in 2017, graduating with first class honours and winning the Drake medal for his dissertation, and as an undergraduate completed a BMus majoring in classical voice. He balances his academic work with a busy performance life. His highlights include performing as a soloist with groups including the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, the Nelson Philharmonia,
Ben Kubiak, a former Macleans College student, shouldn’t be missed in the Pakuranga Choral Society’s Christmas Variety Show on December 8. He made his debut in a full operatic role in 2017 in La Serva Padrona with the Dante Alighieri Society. He has also sung in ensembles including the Auckland Chamber Choir and the St Patrick’s

He also works extensively as an accompanist including accompanying for the Auckland Boys’ Choir who have also performed compositions written by him, Harbour Voices, and the Royal New Zealand Navy Band. In 2017, for his work with brass musicians, he was awarded the Accompanist of the Year award by the Brass Band Association of New Zealand. He is a sought-after repetiteur, frequently accompanying for classes and recitals at the University of Auckland and is often engaged to accompany singers in competitions and recitals. Ben’s performing work spans both classical and musical theatre repertoire having in 2016 been awarded first prize in the Graham Allen Music Theatre Competition. ✦ The Pakuranga Choral Society Christmas Variety Show is on Sunday, December 8 at 5pm at East City Wesleyan Church, 219 Burswood Drive, East Tamaki.

Times Newspapers Christmas Supplement — 3
Simon Gault, one of New Zealand’s favourite chefs, has released his latest cookbook just in time for Christmas. We’ll feature a couple of his recipes each week right up until Christmas.
Tamarind ginger Christmas ham TAMARIND GINGER GLAZE
the reaction from some was as if they had been subjected to some bizarre form of Christmas abuse. I will be cooking Tamarind Ginger Ham this coming Christmas. The tamarind and candied ginger with the clover honey is sensational and should satisfy even the most critical, who should, by year’s end, have recovered from the pizza affront.
►2 00ml coconut nectar ► 1 tbsp red wine vinegar ► 1 00ml ginger beer ► 1 tbsp tamarind paste
HAM
► 1 Christmas ham, skin on ►½ cup candied (crystallised) ginger, cut into matchstick-size pieces ►¼ cup whole cloves
TAMARIND GINGER GLAZE Place all the ingredients in a saucepan and simmer gently for 5 minutes or until the glaze has reduced to a consistency thick enough to coat the back of the spoon.
Serves: Plenty
T
o make a perfect glazed ham: add water to the baking tray to stop the glaze from burning on the base of the ham; allow time for each layer of glaze to set before basting with another; and if your ham is beginning to colour too much during the cooking process, cover loosely with tinfoil. If there is any leftover ham, try it with some watermelon — it’s delicious! Wrap any leftover ham in a clean tea towel soaked in a mix of water and malt vinegar to keep it fresh.

HAM
I decided last Christmas to ignore tradition by making use of my much-loved pizza oven to produce my best examples of the famous Neapolitan pizza, which I adore. To say this was an error in judgment is like saying Tiger Woods is a reasonably good golfer. I thought it all went well but
Preheat oven to 180°C. Remove the ham from the fridge well in advance of cooking, allowing the ham to reach room temperature. Peel off the skin, being careful not to tear the fat and leaving as much of the fat layer intact as possible. Use a sharp knife to score the fat diagonally to make diamond shapes (this is a two-person job as it helps to have someone holding the ham). Stud with
pieces of candied ginger, submerging them into the ham fat, then stud with cloves. Place the ham in a large roasting dish, cover with tinfoil and cook for 30 minutes, then remove from the oven and discard the tinfoil. Add a little water to the bottom of the pan, then baste the ham with a generous coating of the Tamarind Ginger Glaze and return it to the oven. Baste the ham frequently. After being in the oven for 1 hour 15 minutes, it will be sticky and golden. (Cooking time is 45–55 minutes per kg. Ideal finished internal temperature is 62°C.) Remove the ham from the oven and allow to rest before carving. ► Extracted from Summer with Simon Gault, published by Penguin Random House NZ, RRP $50. Text © Simon Gault, 2019. Simon Gault, one of New Zealand’s favourite chefs, has released his latest cookbook just in time for Christmas. We’ll feature a couple of his recipes each week right up until Christmas.

Then add a layer of fresh berries, then another layer of the rum sauce mix, then more berries. Dip a savoiardi biscuit into the berry purée and place on top of the berries. Repeat until the berries are covered. Finish with another layer of the remaining rum sauce mix. Garnish the top with extra fresh berries. Refrigerate until you are ready to serve.

his is a stunner — it’s a perfect summertime Christmas Day pudding. It features my famous Rum Sauce; if you’re not so keen on rum, swap it out for brandy. Place 2 cups of the berries in a blender and purée. Pour the purée into a large flat dish and add the limoncello to thin the purée. Set aside. In a bowl, fold together the Rum (or
In a small saucepan, heat 1 cup cream until small bubbles appear. In a separate glass bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until pale and fluffy. Pour the cream over the egg mixture, whisking constantly. Return this to the saucepan and cook over a very low heat, stirring with a wooden spoon until the sauce coats the back of the spoon (or it reaches 82°C). Add the rum or brandy. Cool the pan in a bowl of ice and once chilled fold in the whipped cream.

hildren throughout Aotearoa have the opportunity to revisit one of those special Christmas traditions – writing to Santa with NZ Post. This time of year is all about little traditions, spending time with whanau and reflecting on the year that’s been, and Writing to Santa is just one of the ways that young Kiwis can participate in this. NZ Post general manager of consumer marketing and brand, Sarah Sandoval, says, “The people at NZ Post love being able to bring the magic of Writing to Santa to young Kiwis. “It’s a very special thing that we’re able to use our mail network for and our posties particularly enjoy delivering these types of letters – knowing they will be making a young person’s day when they see Santa’s reply in the letterbox.” “Last year NZ Post responded to 90,000 letters to Santa and we’re looking forward to helping tens of thousands of children send off their wishlist this year.

Its latest ad pushes the boundaries in highlighting the challenges of workplace gatherings, including Santa’s that get a bit too touchy-feely and colleagues that say incredibly inappropriate things. The advertisement and offer to help with Human Resource issues is part of the EMA’s ongoing SleepEasy campaign, aimed at taking the nightmares away from businesses by giving them the tools to be prepared to deal with any issues. It has also produced a free Social Events Action Guide so employers know how to keep themselves and their people safe. Without putting a damper on the celebration, tips include everything from reminding people what the alcohol policy is before the event, to making sure there is a

It’s not okay when Santas that get a bit too touchy-feely and colleagues say incredibly inappropriate things. And while most gatherings pass without incident, unfortunately from time-to-time - issues do arise that need to be addressed. The key is knowing what needs to be considered before taking action, and this is where the EMA can help. Depending on the circumstance
and the impact of an incident on the workplace, that might range from having a quiet word with an employee about their behaviour to a formal disciplinary action including dismissal.
