‘Embrace and Educate’ was a powerful and moving student-led campaign against bullying held on Tuesday at Howick College. The theme of the assemblies was the impact of discrimination, hate speech and standing up against it. Special guest Toffazal Alam from Christchurch spoke of the time in the mosque where he witnessed the bloodbath during the Christchurch mosque shooting. More in next week’s Howick and Pakuranga Times. rthur Moore is 82, resilient and full of hope. The Pakuranga resident has bowel cancer and, for five weeks, took two buses every week day to Auckland Hospital for radiotherapy treatment. It was on one of those travel days into the city in June that he stumbled while trying to catch his bus, the city-bound Howick & Eastern 70x. It was a nasty fall and one which landed him in hospital for five days with a brain bleed. Despite the set-back, Arthur remains upbeat and is eternally grateful to the bus driver that day, and a couple of passengers who came to his rescue. After getting
him aboard the bus and patching him up, the bus driver made a diversion and dropped Arthur at Auckland hospital. Driver Sandeep Singh, 32, of Pakuranga, was at the wheel negotiating morning rush-hour and witnessed Arthur’s fall. “It was just a normal morning and I was travelling on Pakuranga Road in heavy traffic. As I moved off, I saw an old guy, in my left side mirror, lose his balance and fall down,” said Sandeep. “I parked and just went to him.” Two other passengers on the bus helped – a woman with bandages and a man who helped get Arthur on the bus. “There was a big cut on his eye socket and a lot of blood coming out.
I decided I couldn’t leave him. He told me he was on blood-thinning medication,” Sandeep said. “I offered to call him an ambulance but he said he was okay.” Getting Arthur to the hospital required some resourcefulness on Sandeep’s part given the hospital is not on his route. “The 72x goes down the motorway to Symonds Street, not Khyber Pass. I figured I could take Khyber Pass and still manage my first stop,” Sandeep said. He radioed Howick & Eastern Buses and got the go-ahead to change course. And he managed to make all his stops in time too. Arthur’s partner Sue Bentley was moved by Sandeep’s act of kindness. Arthur took two buses, one from
Pakuranga Road to Panmure and then a second bus from Panmure to the hospital. “While running to catch the bus at Pakuranga Road he fell over, hitting his head and hurting himself quite badly, he still got on the bus worrying he would miss his radiotherapy appointment,” Sue said. “Not only did the driver of this bus help look after him but instead of taking the direct route (which was his schedule) to Britomart, he made a detour and dropped him off at Auckland hospital. “This was extremely kind especially as when Arthur arrived at hospital they found he had a bleed to the brain.” ➤ Turn to Page 5

e all love garage sales! What if you could go to a giant garage sale and everything was free? Cession Community Trust has come up with an idea that, with a bit of “give and take”, puts a smile on everyone’s face. People are invited to bring their boxes and bags and come along to Cession Community’s Give & Take Second Hand Party which is happening this Saturday August 31 from 10am–2pm at the Depot in Lloyd Elsmore Park. It’s a unique community event where no money changes hands, but the wider community benefits. We all have valuable items that have some life left in them that we never get around to selling online – but it’s taking up space. And we all have things that we need that we just can’t afford. What if there was a place you could bring what you no longer need and take what would really make a difference for your life? That’s the Give and Take Party – people giving, people taking. While people are shopping for what they need, they’ll be able to purchase delicious treats from the bake sale fundraiser run by cession|community’s Cultivate Kids to the work of Humanity NZ with the homeless. There are some great partnerships on both sides of the “give and take”. A number of sponsors

have come to the party offering support for the event including Dress For Success Auckland. Cession Community Playgroup coordinator Katie Buckley describes the great fit. “Dress For Success is supporting over 1500 women each year to secure employment, allowing them to provide for their families and contribute positively to our communities. This is one of the primary needs Cession Community Trust identified in a recent survey of women in the community – it’s great to be partnering with Dress For Success with this year’s Give & Take Party and continuing to give families a hand up.” Moore Street Bakehouse has generously donated product to the bake sale which will directly benefit the homeless through Humanity NZ. of organisations are benefitting including Middlemore Kids’ First Unit which has a desperate need for books at the moment on the ward. Blankets and warm clothes will find a home through Humanity NZ. The Salvation Army will be receiving all the leftover items for sale through their opportunity shop in Botany for distribution to those in need. People with clothing or toys to donate can bring them to The Depot on Friday August 30 from 9.30-11am or on the day, Saturday August 31 from 9am onwards. The Give & Take Second Party would love to gift your men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, shoes, accessories, bags, toys of useable quality. They will not be able to take toiletries, cosmetics, electrical goods and bric-a-brac this time. Organisers are inviting people to come to receive regardless of whether they have anything to give. It’s people, helping people, help people.

Mayoral heavyweights to step up for local forum The two heavyweight favourites in the Auckland Mayoral contest will be in Botany next month. Mayoral frontrunners Phil Goff and John Tamihere will be hosted at the LifeGrowth Community Trust’s Meet the Auckland Mayoral Candidates Event on September 24. The candidates will be debating their vision and plans for Auckland and Aucklanders. Lloyd Wong the facilitator for the forum, says, “Both Goff and Tamihere are real politicians, clearly unafraid of a political scrap, who have honed their skills in central government and continuing to make a difference in Auckland local government affairs,” said Wong. “Everyone should come along to the Botany event, not only to listen to this intriguing heavyweight contest but to engage these well-known politicians with meaningful questions.

Measles spreads The ongoing spread of the highly contagious disease measles, which
has affected at least four local schools in recent weeks, appears to have hit NZ Post in Highbrook. A message on their 0800 number says their team is running at reduced capacity due to measles. The Auckland Regional Public Health Service told the Times: “With the volume of measles cases now in Auckland, we only find out about cases in schools or early childhood education centres, or if they have travelled out of Auckland. So we cannot confirm cases in workplaces.”

n elderly woman sustained serious injuries from a fall on a grass bank at Howick College on Saturday. The woman was attending Howick College to see her grandson play in an under-15 rugby semi-final against Pukekohe High School. After slipping down the grass bank, spectators and students came to her aid and an ambulance was called. The woman was transported
to Middlemore Hospital where she was diagnosed with a broken femur. In a second incident a man of advanced age also slipped on bank and the Times was informed he had suffered a concussion. A first responder who attended the incident, spoke with Times staff present at the game and said the injuries from slipping on the bank were not the first he had been called to. Deputy principal Dr Paul Bennett told the Times: “We are sorry
to hear about (the woman’s) injuries sustained at the weekend and we are grateful to the medical staff, parents and students who responded. “Recently, we have invested heavily in drainage for the fields and we try to ensure all visitors use the steps and gravel pathway. However, like all accidents, we will review this incident and consider if anything can be done to reduce the risk of this kind of accident re-occurring.”

apartment development on land zoned for only nine single houses as incompatible with the neighbourhood. It threatened the amenity values and strong community atmosphere they have developed, in particular in Reydon Place, he said. The decision followed two very intense days of public hearings in which local residents, with little familiarity with planning applications, found themselves face to face with an experienced developer and his supporting team, led by a barrister, and supported by planners, architects and other professional people. “When the notification was first published, our association had objected to the Council Planning Committee about the statements that there was no requirement for wider public notification because ‘there was nothing exceptional or unusual about the application, which had nothing out of the ordinary run of things’. “Our contention was that the proposed development application was potentially precedent-setting for the whole of Auckland, given that the classification used was a new one in the Auckland Unitary Plan. Council indicated that they could not quote precedents.” The association subsequently objected, unsuccessfully, to the offices of both the Ombuds-
Honouring and Celebrating Life Howick, Cnr Picton & Walter MacDonald Sts | Ph 533 7493 Manurewa, 88 Great South Rd | Ph 267 2530

man and the Auditor General, both of whom declined to become involved in the debate. One stated that the association (even though it was speaking on behalf of local residents), was not directly impacted and the other that this was a matter governed by the RMA. Apart from compliance with the definitions and objectives set out in the AUP, the proposed development raised many other points of debate, ranging from whether it met required environmental safeguards; traffic congestion; loss of amenity value and other topics. “Our associations are pleased to note that after an initial reluctance to be involved, the Howick Local Board provided feedback opposing the development,” said Slee. In their decision the commissioners supported the residents who maintained that the development was not a genuine IRD. “In what we regard as a tribute to the professionalism of the residents submissions, the Commissioners went so far as to quote a number of residents views on the definition of what constituted such a development,” Slee said. “The Commissioners also quoted one of the submitters conclusions, using words not dissimilar to those in the Howick and Pakuranga Times some months back, that it is important for public to be able to trust in the Auckland Unitary Plan and the safeguards it provides, and that without this trust the Plan ‘is not worth the paper it is written on’.” The association believes that the case establishes an important precedent for Auckland as a whole by preventing the proposal acting as a “Trojan Horse” that could be quoted in subsequent development applications. “We congratulate the commissioners, those council planners who expressed reservations about the development and the residents on a successful outcome.”

esident and ratepayer groups are ecstatic after commissioners refused resource consents to obuild a 71-unit residential development in Cockle Bay. Independent Hearing Commissioners last week refused consent for the proposed development at 30 and 40 Sandspit Road and 2 and 4 Reydon Place. The applicant Box Property Ltd sought resource consent for an integrated residential development (IRD) opposite Howick College and Cockle Bay School. The independent hearing commissioners highlighted the principal issues in contention are that the application – submitted by Box Property Ltd - is not for an integrated residential development but for a multiunit residential development; the proposal failed to satisfy the ‘gateway’ tests of the Resource Management Act (RMA); the effects of the proposal will be more than minor, particularly effects relating to the amenity of the area in general and on neighbouring residents; the proposal is contrary to the relevant objectives and policies of the Auckland Unitary Plan; there is a high potential for an undesirable precedent to be set if this consent was granted; and the proposal is not consistent with the purpose of the RMA. Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association (CBRRA), together with Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association, welcomed the decision of the commissioners. CBRRA chair Laurie Slee said the Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association had worked closely to support local residents opposed to the development. “They are equally delighted with the decision,” said Slee. “It follows many months of anxiety and concern for many of those adjacent to the proposed development. These people viewed the proposed 71

Mooi Skin wins in Australia Mooi Skin, an ultra-luxe skin clinic on Howick’s main street, has picked up a major award in Australia. Founder and director Haley Asbridge was in Sydney with her husband Mike last week. Mooi – which means beautiful in Dutch – was nominated by Advanced Skin technology for two awards. “It was fabulous to receive the win over in Sydney, we are over the moon,” said Haley. “The award we won was for “fastest growing business” with a company called Advanced Skin Technology who have over 3500 accounts in New Zealand and Australia. “This was an Australasian award and it was highly competitive so we were over the moon to even be nominated.

“We were also a finalist and runner-up for “a business most committed to training and education”. Mooi Skin opened its doors in August last year and it has been growing rapidly ever since. “We stock the best, most results-driven skincare on the market and have invested in top quality equipment and training for our staff,” said Haley, who has been in the beauty industry for 18 years. We have worked really hard over the past year and have had wonderful community support. This win is great to create more awareness of our business and it has been great to be recognised as one of the leaders in our industry. We hope that it will build trust and confidence with new clients that they are in safe and very experienced hands.”

he Children’s Corner Howick is planning to celebrate the 149th birthday of Maria Montessori the founder of the amazing, peace driven, educational philosophy. Born on the 31st August 1870 she was the first female medical doctor in Italy and a true pioneer in her field. She developed the Montessori approach to education based on; independence, respect, a love of learning and following the interests of the individual child. Dr Montessori created a carefully planned environment that allow the children’s natural abilities to flourish. Montessori schools exist around the world and her influence can still be strongly felt to this day.
Centre owner, Diane Cornelius, comments “Ahead of Maria Montessori’s birthday we thought it would be lovely for the children to plant some trees for our garden and in a nod to Dr Montessori’s Italian heritage we chose lemon trees. The Montessori philosophy encourages children to take care
of the world around them and our preschoolers will learn so much through nurturing these fruit trees and watching them grow.” These lucky Montessori preschoolers get the chance for real life learning experiences every day and thoroughly enjoyed getting their hands dirty planting these special trees! After giving the trees a drink of worm tea (made by their own preschool worms) these lemon trees are off to a great start – the Montessori way! To find out more about the Montessori style of education, pop along to see The Children’s Corner Howick on Tuesday 17th September 2019, 9.30am-11.30am for their open morning. Have a coffee and a chat with the team and we’re sure the children would love to update you on the progress of their lemon trees!

DAFFODIL DAY
Friday, August 30, 2019 New Zealand’s national stadium Eden Park will illuminate yellow and green in support of the important cause for a week from 26-30 August. Photos supplied
Landmarks light up in support of Daffodil Day T op Auckland landmarks will this week shine bright for Daffodil Day with the Vector Lights on the Auckland Harbour Bridge, Sky Tower and Eden Park supporting the Cancer Society. Vector Lights will turn the Auckland Harbour Bridge yellow to support Daffodil Day, symbolising hope for one in three New Zealanders affected by cancer. The static show will run from Wednesday August 28 to Friday August 30, 6pm to midnight. The Sky Tower will also be lit to celebrate Daffodil Day, from August 28 to 30 to become New Zealand’s largest daffodil, with a green stem and a bright yellow top. The new external signs at the SkyCity Auckland precinct will also be lit yellow for the first time in recognition. New Zealand’s national stadium Eden Park will illuminate yellow and green in support of the important cause for a week from 26-30 August. As the Cancer Society’s biggest annual appeal, Daffodil Day donations are vital to providing a wide range of supportive care services for people with cancer and their loved ones all around the country. The Cancer Society is asking people to dig deep to help Kiwis facing cancer when they donate on Daffodil Day, Friday 30 August. “We really appreciate the support of Auckland Council and Vector for selecting the Cancer Society and lighting this iconic landmark for Daffodil Day,” says Andrew Young, Cancer Society Auckland Northland CEO. “We also want to thank the teams at Sky City and Eden Park for supporting this important cause, with cancer affecting one in three New Zealanders.” “Like the bright lights on these landmarks, Daffodil Day donations will help make a brighter future for those living with cancer and for cancer prevention. Your generosity makes it possible for the Cancer Society to be a strong and independent voice for change to improve cancer outcomes in New Zealand,” says Mr Young. Every day the Cancer Society helps thousands of New Zealanders through the emotional, physical and practical challenges a cancer diagnosis brings. In the last year alone, the Cancer Society took more than 7000 calls to its 0800 CANCER information line, had more than 105,000 meetings, calls or messages with Kiwis dealing with cancer, provided nearly 48,000 nights of accommodation near a hospital and drove almost 105,000 kilometres to help people to and from treatment.

Vector’s GM public policy & regulatory counsel Mark Toner says, “So many New Zealanders are affected by cancer, so we are pleased to be able to support such an important cause, and to recognise the important and vital work of the Cancer Society.” Vector Lights is part of a smart energy partnership between Vector and Auckland Council, in collaboration with the NZ Transport Agency. Auckland Council’s commercial development manager Jo Hartley says, “We are proud to support Daffodil Day with a Vector Lights display in recognition of the outstanding work that the Cancer Society does to create a future with less cancer for all New Zealanders.” Eden Park chief executive officer Nick Sautner says the 116 year-old venue is committed to supporting the local and wider community and making a positive impact on our population. “We’re pleased the Park can help shine a light on the great work the Cancer Society does in our country of bringing awareness to this worthy cause,” says Sautner Brad Burnett, general manager SkyCity Hotels and Sky Tower, says, “For the second year running, SkyCity are honoured to light the Sky Tower as a daffodil and continue to support the Cancer Society, who provide much needed assistance and ongoing research in the battle to stop cancer. Donations can be made at www.daffodilday.org.nz, at any ANZ branch during August or during the street appeal on Friday August 30.

Damian Light (Independent) ■■ Standing for a Howick seat on Auckland Council Damian Light lives in Botany, having lived and worked in Auckland his entire life. Growing up in a large family he learned the value of hard work, honesty and respect. The son of a builder, Damian knows the value of practical solutions and getting stuck in. Damian has volunteered for community organisations across the city helping to fundraise, raise awareness and support those in need. From planting trees to community patrols, he works hard for the community. For more than a decade Damian has worked as a problem solver, helping large organisations improve their delivery and reduce costs. This means understanding the issues, exploring
options and working with people to take meaningful action. During this time he’s managed staff, led teams and delivered transformational change. Damian wants to see change at council, to ensure local voices are heard and get much needed investment. He’ll challenge reckless spending, put the handbrake on rates rises and ensure cost effective delivery. He’ll ensure the billions invested into transport delivers on reducing congestion, improving safety and making our transport fit for a growing city. Damian will ensure development doesn’t come at the cost of the environment, by investing in infrastructure, clean water and taking action on climate change. Damian will continue to be available in the community so issues like Stockade Hill don’t happen, ensuring that local voices are heard and

■■ Standing for a Howick seat on Auckland Council Sharon Stewart has lived most of her life in Howick and is passionate about serving the community. She has over the years been awarded two great honours, Howick Citizen of the Year and the Queen Service Medal for public service (1998). Sharon was very involved in petitioning to get better conditions in all public hospitals and fundraising for the IHC. Having a long family history within the district extending over more than 100 years, Sharon understands her community and is known to be passionate about the welfare and future of Howick. She feels strongly about saving the views over Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve and says that both she and the late Councillor Dick Quax didn’t support much
of the Unitary Plan especially in parts of Howick/Pakuranga. Sharon chairs Auckland Council’s Civil Defence and Emergency Management Committee and has been very involved in improving stormwater and flooding issues. “I would like AT to reconsider the T2 and bus lanes on Pakuranga Road and also make sure that the bus routes are more useful for the people of Howick/ Pakuranga and Botany,” she says. It’s all about working smarter Barry Wood (Independent) ■■ Standing for Howick Local Board ■■ Howick subdivision A resident of Cockle Bay for 27 years and being retired, I have the time and energy to represent you for better outcomes for our community and environment. I have volunteered for thousands of hours ensuring we have a sustainable fishery, clean environment, cleaning streams, beaches and planting trees in our reserves.
Some present board members have held their positions for many years and I believe we need change and new blood. Over the last year I reported to board and council many issues impacting on our local community and very few have been satisfactorily resolved. Our beaches, parks and reserves have been neglected by council over the years and I will work to resolve this. We need to have confidence in council services and it is clear there is a problem. By working smarter and cutting council waste we can keep rate increases to a rea-
sonable level. My promise to you if elected is not only to attend the normal council meetings but to be your representative out in the community. To me there appears to be a break down between council and our board getting this work done and I will make it my mission to resolve this by logging problems and reporting monthly on progress. I have a track record of getting things done and, when confronted with a problem, I am like a dog with a bone and will not let go till a solution has been found. My success is in your hands.

Transparency, communication Dale Smith ■■ Standing for Howick Local board ■■ Pakuranga Subdivision Public Servant Dale Smith has announced his candidacy for the Pakuranga subdivision of the Howick Local Board. Standing on a basis of more transparency and active communication around the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI) with residents not being asked to be proactive in their research. “I believe that it shouldn’t be the job of Howick residents to have to attend meetings and contact public officials
to simply be kept updated on key issues, including the massive AMETI project” says Dale. Having grown up and lived in Auckland all his life, Dale has a passion for the Auckland we live in and is a passionate believer in turning the SuperCity into the world’s most liveable city. He has worked with Auckland Transport and has been on multiple boards, including chairperson of the Kaipatiki Local Youth Board. Some of the key issues he finds in Howick relate to the lack of shades and maintained playgrounds around the area, continuing

and finishing the purposebuilt youth centre and continuing the support for our community groups to be listened to. “It’s not simply enough that residents, similar to those around Tarnica Park (in Northpark) are thrown money at and told to keep quiet. “A vote for change this election will see residents listened to and thriving. “You can be sure that the income provided from the position won’t mean, like the incumbents, that alternative employment will get in the way of an opportunity to represent the hard-working people of Howick.”

Students’ book on struggles of refugees By Farida Master
R Mike Turinsky acknowledges Ra and his wife Sopheara for serving the most delicious Cambodian food for the last 16 years. Times photo Farida Master
Big turnout for last supper at Cambodian Restaurant The appetising food served over the years by Sopheara Cambodian restaurant in Flat Bush must have made a lip-smacking impact for its loyal customers to turn up in large numbers on their last day of business. Both Sopheara and her chef husband Ra, the hardworking couple behind the Cambodian restaurant on Chapel Rd, were overwhelmed with the support they got on the eve of shutting shop. Local resident and artist Sher Bramwell invited a table of 20 to honour both Sopheara and hubby Ra. “They are so gracious and the food has been consistently good over the years. We are really going to miss them,” she said. Mike Turinsky who is close to the family and has mentored their son Prince at Botany Downs Secondary College, said, “It’s rare to find people who do the hard yards and do it without complaining. It’s both inspiring and
humbling.” The restaurant was packed to the capacity on Thursday night and there was not a single table or chair vacant. Extra chairs were added at every table as regulars flowed in to have their last supper cooked by chef Ra. They were surprised when they were called out from the kitchen to a round of applause. Unbeknown to them, Sher had arranged a bouquet of flowers and a card signed by their customers. Even Lee who waits tables was called centre stage and acknowledged for her excellent customer service and her cheekymonkey smile. And while everyone present wanted to know about Sopheara and Ra’s next foodie project, the couple said they would take a break after years of working long hours and then decide where or what they want to pursue.
efugees are vulnerable. Unlike immigrants they are “forcibly displaced” to another country, says Millard Rashidi, a Year 13 student at Ormiston Senior College. Millard arrived from Afghanistan under refugee status three years ago. As part of Lion’s Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme, where students demonstrate a sharp sense of enterprise, Millard formed a company called Atawhai (meaning kindness in Maori). He and five other students highlighted the struggles of a refugee in a children’s book. The multicultural group is keen to make a difference by publishing an illustrated book titled Ali’s First Day at School. The team sold 60 copies in the first two days of publication and claimed second place at the Dragons’ Den which is a competition within the Young Enterprise Scheme programme that marks students on the quality of their business pitches. They were funded $4000 from the Ministry of Youth Development. Back home in Afghanistan we dress differently, speak very basic English, have no technology and eat food with our hands,” says Millard, CEO of Atawhai. “The central character of our book Ali is very confused about everything on the first day at School,” says the 18-year-old. “He is invited to play footy and wonders why the ball is so odd shaped. He thinks he is playing football and gets startled when he’s tackled on the field. “As he is lying flat on the ground, Matthew steps in and helps Ali get back on his feet. Later he shows him around the school. The mes-
sage in the book is about being kind to one another.” Millard says that unlike Ali, he didn’t have people help him. And at the launch of the book when he asked other primary school students to define a refugee, a young student said, “they are uninvited guests to our country”. “She may have heard it from a grown-up at home and it would be sad if she grew up with that mentality,” he says, “Which is why we worked on a book that is not about aliens but real life experiences.” Hujat Mirzayi, also an Afghani, admits he was extremely confused when he first joined the college.
“Our accent is very different and all I said was `Yes’ because that was the only word I knew,” he says. “I couldn’t find my way around college and it was only when our learning advisor introduced me to two other Afghani boys that I was relieved that someone would understand me.” Krishan Reddy, marketing director of the project, says the plan is to work on an animated version with subtitles in different languages. “Refugees face similar experiences in different parts of the world and we hope to sell this book overseas,” he says.

Alan Ayckbourn’s 75th play is another black comedy gem from this prolific playwright, who has a reliable knack of getting to the truth of whatever he chooses to write about in a most entertaining manner. Another victory for people power Great things are possible when concerned residents band together to take action on behalf of their local community. We saw that recently when a group of Northpark residents I’m supporting obtained a commitment from the Howick Local Board to fund the installation of a light at Tarnica Park in an effort to make it safer at night. And we saw it again last week when, after months of work by a group of Cockle Bay residents, a resource consent for a proposed large-scale apartment block on the corner of Sandspit Road and Reydon Place was refused. The developers wanted to build a complex with more than 70 apartments that would have been wildly out of place in a quiet seaside community like Cockle Bay. That suburb was once part of the council heritage zone that protects residents from developments out of line with the community’s needs and expectations. Putting more than 70 apartments in that location would have caused a range of problems. Sandspit Road is a busy thoroughfare with four schools in close proximity and a large amount of pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Local opposition to this proposed development was loud and effective.
MP for Botany
Jami-Lee Ross Numerous locals and the Cockle Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association made it clear from the start this proposed apartment building was not welcome in their neighbourhood. As the local MP for Botany, I shared their concerns. According to the council, all 16 submissions received on the resource consent application were opposed to it. Submitters raised issues related to potential problems including traffic, stormwater and wastewater, privacy and construction and contamination effects. And an online petition against the development was signed by more than 2100 people, so clearly there was widespread community opposition to this project. We recognise that Auckland has a housing crisis and increasing density is one way to address this issue. But that doesn’t mean local residents aren’t right to stand up and make their voices heard when a development that would totally change the character of their community is proposed. People power can achieve great things and it should be celebrated when it does.
‘Several high calibre candidates interested in Botany seat’ By FARIDA MASTER
N
ever has there been such a huge turnout for National Party leader Simon Bridges in Howick. Parking was at a premium as were seats at the SuperBlues meeting at the Howick Bowling Club where local MP Simeon Brown introduced Bridges as “NZ’s next prime minister”. Rapturous applause welcomed the opposition leader. This time Bridges seems more confident and self-assured as he spoke of the controversial petrol tax and called Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern “fleecer-in-chief”. He had everyone’s attention as he spoke of the Government putting a stop to all roading projects “and not started anything new”. “Right now they have stopped the East-West project and yet they have increased fuel taxes by 12c. Sadly they are not even spending our tax money. So where is it going?” Bridges asked. “They don’t know where they are going-if they are Arthur or Martha. “This government has damaged the international education sector which is a $5 billion sector. Our business confidence is at an all time low. “The two biggest issues that have taken a hit is our economy and health sector. “The DHB (District Health Board)

deficits are at an all time low. This is a first in my lifetime that elective surgeries have gone down in numbers. Sadly, the Government got rid of all performance targets and no one is driving results or is accountable. “Unfortunately $300 million didn’t go to the health sector but to Shane Jones and Winston Peters,” he said. “There is an increase of 15,500 people on dole.” Later in the day after the National Party leader had visited GMP Pharmaceuticals, Macleans College, Greater East Tamaki Business Association, Pakuranga Retirement Village, HMI Technologies and the Citizen’s Advice Bureau— he looked a little worn out but insisted he was “fuelled by life”. There was a big coterie of National Party supporters waiting to receive him at Botany Town Centre. In between a maze of handshakes and reaching out to party workers, shop owners and locals, he grabbed a
quick cuppa with the Times. Talking about the Botany electorate and the huge interest in terms of a safe National seat that is up for grabs next year, he said that the potential candidates will be filtered down to five or less. With high profile names like Air New Zealand chief Christopher Luxor’s name popping up, he reasoned, “With Auckland having a third of our population, there are only a couple of seats up for grabs and a seat like that demands strong contenders. “The National membership in Botany has gone through the roof and there is no doubt the there will be a robust, strong contest—there are several high calibre candidates with a very strong track record interested in the seat,” he said. When asked if he is sorry about the fall out with former mate and National Party MP Jami-Lee Ross (now an independent MP for Botany after a public fall-out), he admitted, “It’s highly regrettable but we have to move on. I am focussed on the future and it’s great that we have a strong voice in Botany.” Bridges reveals that the last month or two has been a real mood-changer and as the gloss is wearing off, people are getting tired of the present Government. “Yes, I definitely feel very confident and positive now,” said Bridges
DECISION MAKING: WHO DECIDES WHEN YOU NO LONGER CAN? We spend the majority of our adult lives in charge of our own activities, and often we have responsibilities for other people, companies or trusts. What happens if you lose mental capacity (temporarily or permanently), and are no longer able to manage your own affairs? People of all ages should consider reviewing their affairs and putting in place a plan for somebody else to be able to handle their affairs. So, what sort of plan can you come up with? The key thing to remember is that a plan is best made before you lose mental capacity. If you lose mental capacity without having a plan in place it is likely your family will need to involve the courts to be able to assist you.

A dedicated day for your Dad Father’s Day in New Zealand comes on the first Sunday of September, which differs from the June date of Father’s Day in many other countries. This year it falls on Sunday September 1 and next year will be celebrated on Sunday September 6. Father’s Day is not a public holiday, but it is widely observed by much of New Zealand’s population. Father’s Day is traditionally a special time to recognise the unique and important role fathers fill in society, families, and individual lives. There’s not really much distinctive about Father’s Day in New Zealand compared to other countries. It’s a day to spend time with Dad, shout him a meal, and give him a card or gift. Father’s Day was first celebrated in the US in the early 20th Century. Over the decades it grew in popularity across the country and was exported across the world. Then as now, the holiday provided a special opportunity to honour fathers, while also providing a lucrative new
marketing and spending season for shops and restaurants.
How did Father’s Day start?
The history of Father’s Day, according to the website kwifamilies.co.nz, dates back to the early 1900s and was partly inspired by the unofficial Mother’s Day services which began in 1908. These Mother’s Day services prompted many people to arrange similar services to recognise fathers. While many services were arranged in the next couple of years, the most widely noted was organised in Washington, by Mrs Sonora Dodd. Mrs Dodd wanted to pay tribute to her late father, William Smart, who became a single parent when her mother died in childbirth. William Smart raised six children on his own, which was an unusual feat at that time. Originally Mrs Dodd wanted to hold the memorial service on the anniversary of her father’s death, June 5th 1910, however this did not leave organisers enough time to prepare a service.
Instead the service was arranged to be held on the June 19, and this has became known as the first Father’s Day. While services continued every year, it was not until 1924 that President Coolidge recommended Father’s Day as a national holiday. It took 48 years from that recommendation, before Father’s Day was officially recognised by President Nixon in 1972.
What day is Father’s Day in New Zealand?
Most countries follow the United States tradition and celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday in June however New Zealand and Australia celebrate Father’s Day on the first Sunday in September. Other cultures around the world coincide Father’s Day with other celebrations in their community. In Germany it is celebrated on Ascension Day (40 days after Easter), in the Roman Catholic tradition it is St Josephs Day (March 19), and in Thailand it is the king’s birthday (December 5)

ou would think it was the Queen of England coming out to lunch, quips Evelyn Elizabeth Robertson with a twinkle in her eyes. Beth, as she is known to her family, has turned 90 and is a bit amused with her daughter Jan Botherway who is running around to organise a high tea birthday celebration for more than 110 people at Our Lady Star of the Sea School. Five generations of Beth’s family have attended the school which was then at a different location at Granger Rd, Cockle Bay. “Wonder what my children are going to do for my 100th birthday? They may have to go through a lot more trouble to make it grander,” she says.. So what is she going to wear at the birthday party? “A garter and a smile,” she jokes. Her daughter promptly brings out a well-cut jacket and skirt that the birthday girl with 22 grandchildren and 16 great grand-children is going to wear on the big day. Mother of Stephen, Denise, Jan, Allan, Grant and Peter,
Beth Robertson celebrates her 90th with family and friends at Our Lady Star of the Sea School where five generations of her family studied. Photo supplied
Beth says she is bossed around by family and is fortunate to have them around to help at all times. Till recently she was actively involved with the Catholic Women’s League church group raising money, sending food packets to the islands and catering for funerals. Beth says her then future husband Roy bought the house (which sits behind her current home) when they were engaged. “The Star of the Sea Catholic Church was being built at that time and when he came home
from World War I, he bought the property next to the church. He organised to buy a section before he asked for my hand in marriage,” she recalls. “He saw me crossing the road and fell in love with me. I used to work at Rishworth, the haberdashery shop on Picton Street and he came there on the pretext of buying a baby dress for his niece. It was just an excuse to see me,” she smiles. Beth recalls that in those days no one had any money and all men helped each other to build a house. “Everyone was poor in Howick. Our house was the first to be built on the street,” she says. “My birthday is historically in Howick. “It’s wonderful that my family has grown up in Howick and my great grandmother Margaret Smyth lived in Howick all her life.” Her daughter Jan says that after the high tea with family and friends they continued the party at Howick Club. “Then mum came home and we stayed up till 3am reading all her beautiful cards. She has been inundated with visitors since.” Happy Birthday Beth!
Murray Lane of Howick spent years on his Heisler locomotive.

All aboard for Father’s Day One of the items in the model display at the East City Wesleyan Father’s Day display on Sunday is a 5 inch (12.7cm) scale Heisler logging locomotive. It was made over a period of 20 years by Murray Lane, a Howick resident who is one of New Zealand’s top model engineers. Lane said there were six small Heisler locomotives imported into New Zealand between 1902 and 1924 which were used by a number of logging companies around the country, several of which have been preserved. “These have a two cylinder vee engine mounted under the boiler and drive an axle on each bogie by a central shaft drive via a gearbox,’ said Lane. “The other axle is driven by coupling rods and the special suspension keeps all the wheels on the rails irrespective of the track condition. “Unlike other makes of geared engines, the transmission gearboxes were fully sealed and as a result they were often used in open cast mines. “This engine started off as a model of one of these but quickly grew into a larger engine based on the 90 ton Heisler West Coast Special, 10 of which were built between 1927 and 1939.
“The engine unit and basic layout were drawn using an old fashioned drawing board in the days before CAD drawing systems became available. “The total weight with the driver is around 200kg and with a 2 to 1 reduction through the gear boxes and with the small 3 ½ inch diameter wheels it has tremendous torque, it has pulled 1½ tons up a 1 in 100 grade for 500 metres with the boiler boiling 3 pints of water a minute,” said Lane. “The engine runs like a sewing machine up to 3000 revs per minute. Only the engine unit is displayed here but when coupled to the tenders with extra three bogies the unit is 2.58 metres long. “The engine has now been retired and a display case is being made and it will be shown in a private steam museum.” Organiser of the creative Father’s Day community event Rev Dr Richard Waugh says, “Murray Lane’s locomotive will be a centre piece of the hobby displays on the day. He is a master craftsman and the Father’s Day event will be showcasing a range of men’s talents, from cars and motorcycles to stamp collections and locally written books. Everyone is welcome.”

Rates reform required
The government’s announcement this week that they are reviewing the cumbersome planning rules for local government is a welcome move. However this needs to be backed up with greater support for local government including funding to deliver on the lofty promises. We must have reform of local government funding — the current model is unsustainable and is holding back our cities and regions. Being forced to beg for funding is demeaning and disincentivises councils. Returning the GST on rates would be a good, easy step that would boost council books while greater reforms take place.

It is unfortunate when our MP for Botany (Jami-Lee Ross, Times, August 22) weighed into the cockle debate when he only has half of the story. Of all our local beaches, Cockle Bay has been a success story since the introduction of a local management plan in July 2008 which included the seasonal closure of the shellfish beds for seven months of the year. This decision was able to be made due to the very good scientific data that had been gathered at the time by a Manukau City Chinese Community Trust. Prior to the introduction of this management plan the shellfish beds (cockles) were at risk of being driven to a level where we risked a potential collapse in this very valuable recreational fishery. Today, not only have the cockles rebuilt on this iconic beach, they have continued to give thousands of Aucklanders, many of them new New Zealanders, a chance to enjoy one of New Zealand’s treasured rights to take a feed for their family during the open season, May 1 to October, the winter months only. Yes there are many who abuse this national privilege but MPI with the support of many honorary fisheries officers (HFOs) spend hundreds of hours patrolling the beach at low water to ensure compliance with the rules and have done so since the introduction of the seasonal closures. The main problem is a lack of education amongst many in our diverse communities who continue to abuse the rules and try to take (steal) more than their daily limit

The upcoming local government elections should be a timely reminder of the challenges we face to uphold our democracy and the roll our community social media sites must play. Community Facebook sites are an encyclopaedia of helpful local information, however it’s important that we are alerted to the devious political side lurking beneath some of them that is undermining our democracy. There is no doubt that local politics is having a huge impact on our social and financial wellbeing and as voters we must arm ourselves with the knowledge to make informed and educated decisions about those who seek to govern our lives. This can only come from fair and robust debate along with policy from all candidates. Our democratic right to these balanced observations is being eroded by political candidates/ tickets who have taken “administrative” control of some large community Facebook sites. These candidates/tickets only seek to block and disable any competing candidates or members of our communities who challenge their views or policy. It is important that any political bias administrators of these community sites may hold be put aside to allow the voting public access to fair and transparent democratic process from all sides of the political spectrum. Respect for our democratic freedoms must be defended and “administrators” have a crucial role to play in this.

of 50. But the killer on the beds is those gatherers who use steel tools to dig cockles. These steel garden tools are killing the past summers spat fall of juvenile cockles when they are still very soft. The second killer is people once they have dug their cockles and sorted out the big ones, they then depart leaving the low graded remaining cockles in mounds where they die in the sun or remain exposed to predation on the next high tide. This must stop! Our Botany MP would be better serving his community if he got out in support of the local residents to better educate the visiting public to abide by the rules, use no steel garden tools and to cover and bury the low graded cockles being discarded, back under the sand. With this support and public education the cockles will look after themselves. Finally, if the science - not people’s opinions, prove that the cockle biomass is still falling, then the next tool is to reduce the bag limit and shorten the season. Total closure is the last and final tool to be used with care. Once closed, it will become a lost public treasure for all time. But the shellfish thieves will still come to plunder. Around Auckland we have many beaches closed to the taking of shell fish, including Eastern Beach. Let’s not make Cockle Bay another one, just because the local residents don’t like the nationality of the people visiting the beach.

Sandspit Road decision
Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross welcomes the refusal of resource consent for a large-scale apartment block on Sandspit Road, Cockle Bay. Sandspit Road is a busy thoroughfare with four schools in close proximity and busy traffic. Cockle Bay was also once part of the heritage zone that protects residents from development that is out of line with community needs and expectations. Cockle Bay residents galvanised together to fight the proposal for an apartment building with more than 70 apartments and limited parking. This result shows how local residents can protect their community through a resource consent process. But the real injustice through this process is that the application got as far as it did. There are clear problems with stormwater and wastewater infrastructure in Cockle Bay. Cockle Bay is not the right place for high-rise apartments. The Council and Local Board need to focus on infrastructure improvements to protect property owners and Cockle Bay Beach. We also need local officials to properly notify applications like this. The Council and Local Board allowed a limited notified application to proceed,

Can police sort this out
I’m sure I’m not the first person to raise this extremely annoying problem we face in our community. There is an individual who thinks it necessary, and okay, to blast his ‘music’ through a loudspeaker in his car around the neighbourhood at random hours of the day and night. I’m fairly certain devices like these aren’t allowed or legal in personal vehicles (unless someone can inform me otherwise). We have a sick toddler who, after many attempts, finally went to sleep tonight but was awoken by this inconsiderate a**hole. I have seen/heard ‘him’ driving through the Botany car park doing the same thing but also at 4:30am when going for my run! I’d love to know what the police can do (soon) to sort this out, to ensure someone else doesn’t deal with it.

Utmost in quality, service and on-time delivery Kitchen manufacturer Stewart Scott Cabinetry (SSC) was started in 1979 by Stewart Scott. Stewart had a vision to become one of New Zealand’s most respected kitchen cabinetry companies, and judging by the thousands of satisfied customers, they are well on their way. Their business has stood the test of time, and outlasted many fly-bynight operators. The business is now under the direction of his daughter Heather Wood, son Brian Scott, and helmed by engaging branch manager (and granddaughter) Rebecca Banks. “Grandad was always thought of as a bit of an entrepreneur” says Rebecca, “he was a pioneer in introducing the concept of face lifting, and back in the day he developed a brand of lovely flora and fauna inspired carved timber veneer doors he called `Aladdin doors’. The doors were considered a fashionable trend in the process of revamping old painted timber face frame kitchen’s from the 60’s into the groovy 70’s style. We now look at these and consider them gorgeous and charming with their vintage retro look!”
Above: left, the friendly staff at Stewart Scott Cabinetry in East Tamaki; right, one of their kitchen designs.
Stewart also had an eye for innovation, and a finger on the pulse of the industry. He would spend time overseas at trade shows looking into new and clever products, smarter production methods, and take inspiration from ideas that he would later introduce and integrate into New Zealand. Staying on-trend is uberimportant in the kitchen design game. SSC staff regularly continue Stewart’s journeys of discovery off-shore to keep them abreast of the latest advancements, and to acuminate their product knowledge.
Being a family business, you deal directly with the owners who are extremely passionate about who they are, and what they do. Many staff members have been with the company for extended periods and have become ‘part of the SSC family’. This integrity means their customers receive the utmost in quality, service and on-time delivery. Their longevity proves that keeping to these principles guarantees happy customers and staff! Celebrating their 40th birthday in 2019, SSC is a solid and well experienced cabinetry company that continues to provide mid-

level ‘Kiwi contemporary’ kitchen solutions for an affordable price. “We have seen lots of styles and trends come through over the years we have been in business, but what we have always stood true to is, New Zealand made kitchens,” says Rebecca. She adds, “We have always supported the New Zealand industry in terms of manufacturing, supply chain, networking, design and “have brought some real can do kiwi ingenuity to the development of our product & style “. So what makes them different? Stewart Scott Cabinetry
has in-house design expertise meaning full process control over your design from the outset. On-site fabrication means the customer deals direct with the manufacturer. They even have their own in-house brands Inside Vision and Facelifters, and cater to the extended trade and retail markets. Have a look at the great kitchen options on offer at www.stewart-scott.co.nz, or give them a call on 09 262 0806 or stop by their showroom at 1 Ron Driver Place, East Tamaki.

A year-on-year drop in the number of listings in Auckland hasn’t been seen for a while.
T
he total number of listings across New Zealand remains very low — even allowing for winter — and even Auckland is now showing early signs of a tightening in available stock. This low starting point, combined with the further growth in property values could mean that the spring uplift in the stock of total listings is a bit stronger than normal. However, any increase is unlikely to be massive, given that low interest rates and unemployment mean almost no forced pressure on anybody to sell, said CoreLogic senior
property economist Kelvin Davidson. “As winter starts to (hopefully) ease a little, now is about the time of the year when talk in the property market turns to the health of listings and what sort of pick up is likely as we get into spring,” he said. “After all, listings activity plays a key role in the number of actual sales that can be achieved. So what sort of base will the looming upturn for listings be starting from?” In Auckland, although listings are still quite a bit higher than they were at this time of year

back in 2015 and 2016, they are at least a fraction lower than they were this time in 2018. A year-on-year drop in the number of listings in Auckland hasn’t been seen for a while, but this is what you’d expect should be happening – i.e. with confidence subdued and property values gently declining, it makes sense that some vendors who may have just been testing the market would delist their properties, and that the normal flow of sales (albeit low) would outweigh any new listings and also help to gradually eat into the existing stock of listings.

preferred applicants. While this might slow the process down slightly if the preferred candidates credit checks are not satisfactory, the industry concedes that it is prudent to check preferred candidates rather than all candidates. “We also welcome clarity on issues such as income verification/employment, smoking, expenses, and will be working with our members to communicate these updated standards in a timely manner. “We absolutely agree with the Commission’s list of questions that should not be asked at any stage of the tenancy application including nationality, ethnicity, physical/ mental disability, gender, sexual orientation etc. These have no place in discussions about finding a tenant and could only be used to discriminate. We will also be reminding our members of their obligations under the Human Rights Act.”

this is certainly something the industry agrees with.” One concern initially raised by the industry was around being able to ask whether the applicant was over 18, however, the new guidelines clearly state this is something potential tenants can be asked from the outset in order to ensure landlords and property managers are complying with the requirements under the Residential Tenancies Act. “We’re delighted that the OPC has cleared up the issue around proof of age as this was a big concern to a number of our members when the guidelines initially came out, so we are really pleased the Commissioner has taken our feedback on board,” says Norwell. “Another area which has been clarified is around credit checks. The new guidelines outline that credit checks should only be carried out on

REINZ welcomes the new guidelines The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) has welcomed the new guidelines which have been released by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) as being much clearer and simpler for the industry to follow. Bindi Norwell, chief executive at REINZ says: “When the guidelines were initially released there was a lack of consistency and limited industry consultation in the development of the guidelines. However, today’s (August 19) guidelines are much clearer as they specify the type of information that should and should not be collected at various stages of the tenant selection process. We also welcome the collaborative approach the Commission has taken over the last few months. “In the Commission’s view, collecting certain information becomes more justifiable as the process progresses and

A part time position is available for approximately three days per week – one day on reception and two days as a dental chairside assistant. One of the days (Monday) involves late night surgery hours until 7.30pm. The other two days will be Thursday and Friday. We’re looking for someone who loves the health industry, with great people skills and can be highly organised. This is a long term job share position that relies on flexibility where we cover each other for annual leave, special days off, and short notice sick leave. So there will be times when you will be required to work a full week. Hence this ideally would suit someone with no other commitments. Please note you must be entitled to work in New Zealand. No experience is needed as full training will be given, a great attitude only is required! We’re a happy close knit group that love delivering excellent care for our patients. England flex muscles
I
t’s a funny old world when Six Nations champions Wales have broken New Zealand’s 509-week status as the world’s top rugby nation and England, fifth in last year’s Six Nations, beat 2018 champions Ireland 57-15 at Twickenham. That doesn’t make good reading for those of us who recall the Irish beat the All Blacks twice in their last three clashes, having never previously beaten them. But then the All Blacks looked creaky this winter when beating Argentina 20-16, drawing with South Africa 16-16 and losing to Australia 47-26 before avenging that defeat with an emphatic 36-0 triumph. What made that latest win so satisfying was the impact shown by the five replacements with Nepo Laulala and Patrick Tuipolotu adding grunt to the forwards, Sonny Bill Williams straightening the backline and busy new wings George Bridge and Sevu Reece showing a hunger and brilliance that Rieko Ioane and Ben Smith had failed to produce. In fairness to the latter pair, their forwards didn’t give them a platform to perform in earlier games and Smith had lost speed following a hamstring tear. At a time when the All Blacks have so many candidates for the midfield positions, I am sur-

prised most writers and commentators favour the SBW/ Jack Jack Goodhue pairing. While it was pleasing to see Williams perform well in the walloping of the Wallabies, injuries have plagued him since the 2016 Olympics. And while Goodhue has been solid, Anton Lienert-Brown’s ability to beat a man and pass in close quarters contact gives his wings more chances to score. None of the midfielders, however, are as prolific a try-scorer as powerful Ngani Laumape whose passing game requires more polish. But if you want to talk power, England can rejoice in the return to form of No 8 Billy

With George Ford and Owen Farrell combining sweetly in the five-eighths, juggernaut Tuilagi, speedy fullback Elliot Daly and wings Johnny May and Joe Cokanasiga are getting quick ball to sharpen their attacking skills. trusting their backs, so too have South Africa who pose the first hurdle for the All Blacks to overcome in the first game of the World Cup in Japan next month. Certainly the Boks won’t under-estimate anyone, having lost their pool opener to brave Japan in 2015. But they bounced back to just lose 20-18 to New Zealand in a nerve-tingling semi-final. It is also worth recalling that having won two World Cup finals in 1991 and 1999, Australia were the last losing finalists, having lost to the All Blacks 34-17 in 2015. Their form has since been patchy and sometimes poor. However they can still be dangerous as the All Blacks learned before avenging this year’s 47-26 humiliation. Having also won two in 1995 and 2007, the Boks will also be eager to equal the All Blacks record of three in what looks likely to be the closest fought World Cup to date. he Auckland NHL men’s and women’s teams will take on Canterbury at Lloyd Elsmore Park this weekend. “Come along and support our NHL teams in the annual Canterbury exchange where our teams play for the Tony Palmer Memorial trophy,” said Auckland Hockey general manager James Sutherland. “These are capped matches for players as they build up for the last edition of the NHL starting in Tauranga on Saturday 14 September. “Tony Palmer was the manager of the 1976 Gold Medal winning NZ Men’s Hockey Team and an Auckland administrator from the 1970s. In the Striking Gold book both Canterbury and Auckland players speak fondly of a well liked and popular manager and administrator. “The exchange and rivalry between Auckland and Canterbury teams that was strong throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s was reinstituted last year with Canterbury hosting Auckland NHL teams in Christchurch, with Canterbury taking the trophy over the four matches,” said Sutherland. “Let’s get behind our teams as we try to wrestle back the trophy from the Red and Blacks. Go the Blue and Whites!” The games for this weekend are: Saturday August 31 - Auckland Men vs Canterbury @ 2pm; Auckland Women vs Canterbury @ 4pm; Sunday September 1 - Auckland Men vs Canterbury @ 1pm; Auckland Women vs Canterbury @ 3pm
TEACHING STYLE: Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”
