Virus forces 14 day stand-down

S

tudents and teachers who have recently been in China where the Coronavirus has claimed more than 100 lives will not be allowed at school for two weeks.

Some local schools have confirmed they will be enacting strict stand-down periods in line with Ministry of Education advice this week.

The virus that causes respiratory difficulties originated in Wuhan China.

Macleans principal Steven Hargreaves said in a update on the school’s website that they are monitoring the situation regarding coronavirus and responding as more information is provided to the.

“The incubation period is currently considered to be 14 days,” said Hargreaves.

“All students arriving from China are requested to remain off school for two weeks following their date of arrival into New Zealand. This is

as per Ministry of Education advice issued yesterday (January 27).”

The school will remain open as normal for all other students.

“Any student who is unwell must not attend school and should seek medical advice through the normal channels,” Hargreaves said.

“Students and families are encouraged to follow the basic principles to reduce the risk of infection, such as washing hands frequently and covering coughs and sneezes

Adele White: the time is right Howick Local Board’s new chairperson Adele White has hit the ground running! White writes about her first month in the big chair of the Howick Local Board and what she hopes to achieve

W

ithin hours of my election at the Board’s Inauguration ceremony on November 4 I was leading a Citizenship Ceremony for 317 new New Zealanders at Manukau’s Vodafone Centre.

I feel proud and excited about my new role.

Eighteen years in local government and 33 years as a police officer in the area I grew up in has prepared me well.

Both these roles involved relationship-building, planning, troubleshooting and leadership – all of which are a huge part of being Local Board chairperson.

My first day in the chair’s chair at the Howick Local Board office in

Pakuranga was spent reading an influx of emails. There was a fleeting moment when I asked myself if I had made the right decision, but that quickly passed!

Amid invitations to attend events and letters from residents following up on issues, were emails sending words of congratulations and encouragement.

I must acknowledge the support I have received from the wider community and from our team of Local Board services staff who have been welcoming, helpful and are superefficient.

Subsequent days on the job have included chairing board workshops, attending meetings with council

staff and community groups, cultural celebrations, meeting with chairpersons from the other 20 Auckland local boards, and preparing for the three years ahead.

It was great to welcome John Spiller to the role of deputy chair in December. We have a board of experienced local people who want the very best for their communities.

My plan is to lead a focused, engaged and amicable board who carry out every aspect of their work with respect, timeliness and professionalism.

In addition to championing a number of significant projects in progress throughout our ward, we are about to prepare a draft Local

Board plan for the forthcoming term and look forward to gathering feedback from local residents.

Work-life balance is important.

I acknowledge that the frequent travel I enjoy may have to go on the back burner for a while!

I will continue to enjoy the outdoors, the arts and the company of family and friends – and I am excited at the pending arrival of our first grandchild.

Those who know me well are aware of the satisfaction I have had from a busy life and have asked many times in the past why I haven’t pursued the role of Local Board chairperson.

It now feels the time is right!

Coronavirus threat forces schools to issue warnings ➤➤From Page 1 “International agents in China have been contacted and anyone coming from there needs to have a health check before they leave for NZ, plus they must also stay in their accommodation for two weeks once they arrive, before starting school.”

Signs have been erected in Pakuranga College reception in both English and Mandarin asking people who have recently returned from China not to enter, but to contact the school via email or phone.

Saint Kentigern College has responded in a similar fashion.

“Families at each of our schools have been contacted prior to the start of term with general advice,” the school told the Times.

“We have requested that any student or staff member who may be at high risk of exposure because they have recently been to China or have been in close contact with someone confirmed with the virus, delay the start of their school year for 14 days.

“We also requested travel details from all students and staff who have travelled overseas in the last 14 days so we can assess any pos-

sible risk.”

Howick College is closely monitoring information provided by the Ministry of Health.

“The Ministry of Health currently advises that there are no cases of the virus in New Zealand and that the risk of an outbreak in New Zealand is low. They advise that there is no specific action to be taken at this time. Having said that, we have decided to impose a two-week quarantine period for every student who returns from the affected regions and will closely monitor the situation,” Howick Col-

Listening to Brian from Cockle Bay beach MP for Botany

A

bout a year ago local man Brian approached me, perplexed about why, over many years, no government department or minister has taken seriously the long-term environmental problems we face at Cockle Bay Beach.

Brian lives in Cockle Bay. He sees the beach every day from his home. He cares about his local community.

He wants his grandchildren and their grandchildren to be able to enjoy Cockle Bay as generations before have.

Cockle Bay Beach has one of the lowest numbers of cockles of all the beaches that have shellfish restrictions in place. Surveys that have been taken since 2011 have shown a marked downward trend in the number of cockles over the years.

While a 50-cockle seasonal limit is in place at the beach between May and September there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence that the limit is being ignored.

Brian challenged me to once again take up the effort of convincing the Minister of Fisheries to close Cockle Bay to all shellfish harvesting for at least five years, to allow the beach to recover.

I had walked that path before, unsuccessfully. When I was with the National Party, the National Minister of Fisheries at the time refused to act.

required back then to put the party first and support our minister. As an independent voice I can now properly stand up for Botany and achieve real results.

And so I took up Brian’s challenge.

After months of collecting signatures for a petition, both online and in person, as well as articles and billboards promoting the Cockle Bay cause, we delivered our petition before Christmas.

A few weeks ago the current Minister of Fisheries, Stuart Nash, called me. He had good news. Finally, some action was going to be taken.

The Minister let me know that, following our community efforts, he has ordered a new survey of the beach to take place in February.

Unless that survey shows an increase in the cockles at the beach, he said he will be taking serious management action.

This will likely see a rahui or ban placed on the collecting of all shellfish.

Cockle Bay is finally being taken seriously and we will now see change.

Howick needed a fire-brigade Local historian Alan La Roche continues his series marking the district’s 170th anniversary in 2018 and the countdown to the 175th celebrations.

In 1930 with the prospect of reticulated water, some thought of a fire-brigade.

In 1929 Canon Mason of Anglican All Saints Church was a well-known water-diviner having found good water at Otahuhu and Onehunga so he was asked to find water on Stockade Hill.

After drilling down 250 feet (76m) and finding no water, the Pigeon Mountain bore had to be used.

Even in the early Fencible period, James White organised a Howick co-operative insurance scheme to help those who had lost their raupo or wooden cottages due to fire. It was successful for a few years.

For several years Picton Street was called “a brick area”, to help prevent fires hence McInness’s Corner, Rice’s Bakery and the Prospect of Howick Hotel buildings.

Howick had experienced many major fires, each with its own tragic story.

In 1904 the Melanesian Mission Building relocated to Cook Street and burned.

Crawford’s Horse-bus stables at top of Picton Street were destroyed in 1906 Howick’s large grand wooden two storied Marine Hotel in Picton Street was burned down in February 1927 when electricity arrived, and a lady ironing did not know to turn it off after use.

The “perceived valuable” contents of the bar were carried to safety, plus some furniture and the day’s takings. The outbuildings and garage were saved by hauling up buckets of water from the well.

Of course, next morning the bar reopened in a make-do shelter for the thirsty community. But there was no fire-brigade then.

Alfred Gerring’s house caught fire in Uxbridge Road in March 1927 where his friend died.

convent and orphanage was burned.

The Thistle and Shamrock Hotel (on the site of Owairoa School today) in Nelson Street burned in 1932 George Wagstaff’s blacksmith shop burned down in 1937 Howick’s church bells were rung to bring out helpers for the bucket brigade.

The Howick Town Board thinking ahead bought a section at the corner of Wellington Street and Picton Street, for a proposed fire brigade.

In April 1931 once reticulated water was turned on coming from Ohuiarangi-Pigeon Mountain to the reservoir on Stockade Hill, volunteers were called for a fire brigade and 11 volunteers joined up. An old Reo car was bought and converted into a fire engine with no windscreen, support for a ladder, a seat for the driver and bell ringer all wearing brass helmets and black tunics. The post office telephone girls switched on the siren.

ANNIVERSARY By 1940 the volunteers had built a shed for the engine and someone slept on site. There was a longdrop toilet behind the shed.

If you were at the butchers and the siren went-off, Laurie White would drop what he was doing and run up Picton Street to the station. Dick Newton and Bob Steward would leave their cars anywhere nearby and jump onto the engine, into a tunic and off to the fire. Over the years fire engines have improved as well as uniforms and equipment.

These men have served our community well for more than 89 years.

Dog bites child on Eastern Beach A

local father is furious after his daughter was bitten by a Staffordshire bull terrier on Eastern Beach.

According to the Neal Holt, his 10-year-old daughter Christiana was sitting in shallow water at around 6:35pm on Tuesday January 21, when the unrestrained dog ran towards her aggressively and bit her on the ear.

After chasing the dog away, it approached another girl in shallow water and Mr Holt “advised that family to not let the dog get any closer to her”.

The dog’s owner came over and apologised and said he would come back to check on the girl once he had secured the animal in his car.

Mr Holt followed the man down the beach and saw him get into a waiting car and watched

him “doing a runner”.

Christiana was then taken to East Care Accident & Medical Clinic and then onto Midd-

lemore Hospital. Mr Holt would like to say “a big thank you to the staff there and to the people who assisted our family on the beach”.

Mr Holt said the incident could have been much worse.

“Christiana was very lucky that the dog only went for her ear... dogs are prohibited on the beach prior to 7pm.”

When asked if loose dogs were a problem at the beach, Mr Holt said, “ A lot of people manage their dogs well but in the sixand-a-half years that we have lived at Eastern Beach, my two children have been accosted four times (by dogs).

“I am pretty frustrated that this is occurring.”

Auckland Council’s Animal Management is investigating the incident.

State of footpaths a concern after fall

By JIM BIRCHALL A local mother, with her 12-week-old baby in a pushchair, fell on Whitford Rd whilst out walking, severely injuring both her knees.

Her first thought was with her baby and the possibility of the infant being injured or worse.

The baby was strapped in with a harness as the mother went flying.

The mother, whose identity the Times has chosen to protect, is angry people are being put at risk as a result of shoddy, unmaintained footpaths and walkways, and criticised the way Auckland Council dealt with the incident report.

“Today I reported the incident to the council and am very frustrated by their simplistic admin approach.

Thanks for letting us know, here’s a ref number, bye. It’s actually not good enough. We pay rates to ensure that basics such as safe paving is available to us. Who will be accountable?

Who will apologise? Who will ensure this doesn’t happen to another person?” she said.

“I guess ACC will pick up any medical fees for me and the council will be able to sweep it under the carpet. I’m angry and frustrated.”

Council contractor Fulton Hogan has since remedied the

affected area.

A Times source questioned whether Auckland Council is prioritising the improvement of footpaths; “Council is spending a lot of money on cycleways.

What about footpaths?”

After hearing of similar stories around Howick, the Times conducted a brief reconnaissance in the area and noted tree roots have overcome footpaths in many places, making them unstable and potentially dangerous.

Young fan meets sporting idols A local Pakuranga cricket fan was excited to meet his heroes on Sunday (26 January) when he joined Captains Kane Williamson and Virat Kohli for the pre-match coin toss on the pitch prior to the Blackcaps vs India match.

Eight-year-old Sachetan Ippa, who attends Pakuranga Heights School and plays for Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club, won the ANZ competition to be the Coin Toss Kid which involved joining the two team captains on the pitch before the match. Sachetan said, “I started playing cricket when I was about one so I have always

loved cricket.

“I felt so lucky to be chosen as a Coin Toss Kid and be able to meet my two favourite cricket players. I practice all the time because I want to be a Blackcap when I’m older.”

ANZ Pakuranga branch manager Natalie Wang said Sachetan was one of 28 young cricketers selected to take part in the pre-match ritual this cricket season.

“Young Kiwi cricket players are often inspired by New Zealand’s professional players, so we wanted to give them an opportunity to meet their sporting heroes. We hope

Sachetan and all the Coin Toss Kids winners have fun, enjoy the experience and are inspired to continue to play the game,” she said.

The Coin Toss competition is one part of ANZ’s long-standing support of Kiwi cricketers.

iwi-born artist Ant Utama, a former resident of Cockle Bay who now lives in Germany, has just released a song in partnership with Lifeline Aotearoa.

It is aptly called ‘I Got Your Back’ and is inspired by the unfortunate suicide statistics in New Zealand. 685 people passed away in the 12 months prior to June 30th 2019. Males are among those at the highest risk with 72 per cent or 498 deaths this past year.

The song’s message is to encourage people to be more open and look at each other more closely and 100 per cent of the proceeds from the song are going to Lifeline.

“After moving to Germany a 12 months ago, I was surprised to see how appalled Europeans were when they heard about these statistics. They imagine a green Lord of the Rings-esque landscape and an entire population that is high on life. This is sadly not the case for many people,” says Ant. Police are appealing for members of the public to speak up if they have been victim to a home maintenance scam in recent weeks.

Acting Superintendent Dave Glossop, Tamaki Makaurau deployment manager, says police have recently been made aware that there may be small groups of individuals committing these sorts of scams.

Bill would allow for emergency priority A

Members Bill to allow lines companies to use flashing lights which require traffic to give them priority when responding to electrical emergencies has been lodged by Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown.

Brown says that congestion in Auckland and across New Zealand is making it more difficult for lines companies to respond to electrical emergencies where someone’s life is in danger in a timely manner.

“In an incident where the power lines have been brought down by a car crash, fire and ambulance responders can arrive quickly using their lights and sirens, but often cannot assist until the lines company turn up and turn the power off.

Frequently, the line company is stuck on the motorway or in traffic caused by the accident such as where power has been cut to traffic lights, he points out.

“In Auckland a car accident involving a power pole will take place every day on average. There are also cases of people dependent on electricity for medical machines which keep them alive. The sooner these vehicles can turn up to get the power back on – the better the outcome,” he says.

Kids give it a try

Hundreds of East Auckland children will swim, cycle & run their way to the finish line as part of the upcoming Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon.

The popular kids’ event is being held at Pt England Reserve on Sunday February 9 with the TRYathlon starting at 9am.

Participants will swim, cycle & run their way to the finish line to receive a medal from some of New Zealand’s leading sporting stars.

Since the very first TRYathlon event in 1992 (which boasted just 800 entrants) more than 400,000 Kiwi kids have given it a try. The triathlon, which is now in its 28th year, expects more than 35,000 participants to take part from across the country, making it the world’s largest U16 triathlon series.

The iconic sporting event introduces thousands of New Zealand children to organised sport, in a positive environment which encourages them to lead active lifestyles. This year the company has created a new introductory event for six-year-olds, who are too young to take part in the TRYathlon. The new Splash & Dash event will be run at 16 TRYathlon events this summer - including the East Auckland event - and will see budding TRYathletes, complete a 50-metre swim followed by a 1500 metre run.

The Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon events are running throughout New Zealand until March 29.

cannot think of any time when women’s sport in New Zealand has been as strong as it is now.

In netball, rugby, sevens, kayaking and rowing, Kiwi women are world-beaters.

What makes it so special in netball and sevens is the joyous sense of unity which blends brilliant individuals into an indomitable team.

Only one point separated the Silver Ferns from the Australian Diamonds at the World Cup final thriller in Liverpool last year. But it was beautiful to behold with the three veteran fossils Maria Folau, Casey Kopu and Laura Langman capping outstanding careers with a world crown.

Some interesting facts about the growth in women’s rugby were released in an excellent article written by LockerRoom editor Suzanne McFadden last year.

In 2018 an extra six million women joined World Rugby’s fan base and 40 per cent of the total 400 million were female.

These figures are not reflected in crowd numbers attending women’s matches compared with those for men. However the standard has risen remarkably and deserves greater support.

TEACHING STYLE:

Our first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don’t forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class we can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques.

We use the “Socratic” method of teaching wherein we mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (We love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and we know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: “Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!”
