Built on rich heritage Housing around Papakura, Takanini, Drury and surrounds continues to mushroom with thousands of new homes either underway or in the pipeline for completion in the next few years.

Umupuia in the east (sometimes called Duder’s Beach). That particular Marae is the Mana Whenua Marae of the Ngai Tai iwi of Umpuia and Tamaki Makaurau and it has a unique place in the area’s history.

While modern apartments, terrace houses and affordable housing together with attractive estates bring new life and wealth to the south, it is timely to remember the district has rich Maori and European settler histories.

In addition to the land’s cultural and economic value to tangata whenua, the area, particularly further south and to the west, has long been in agricultural and horticultural use especially as one draws closer to Bombay and Pukekohe before heading west.

The name, Papakura is a Maori word believed to have originated from ‘papa’, meaning earth or flat and ‘kura’ meaning red, reflecting the rich, fertile soil upon which the community was founded. The tangata whenua of the area dates back many centuries, before European colonisation and hapu can trace their whakapapa back to the Tainui waka. There was a time when several pa stood across the region including at the western end of the Paerata ridge, while another stood above the plain east of Papakura at Red Hill, strategically placed to control the inner reaches of the harbour and north-south routes east to the Clevedon area. Two other pa sites were at the mouth of Slippery Creek which was associated with settlements and cultivations. The influential Maori presence, includes the Marae at

Also an early frontier settlement, the first Europeans made their home in these southern reaches of Auckland some 150 years ago under what was then the Waikato Immigration Scheme. Many of those original 4000 immigrants, tempted by the offer of free land, settled in the wider Papakura area and also further south in the Franklin district. They came mostly from the United Kingdom and the Cape Colony, leaving behind families and everything familiar to them. After a long sea voyage, they then faced long delays before even setting foot on ‘their’ new land with most living in disused army barracks, tents, or shacks. In particular, Drury’s development as a colonial settlement focused on the Great South Road, accommodation and rural services while the Papakura area once featured coal, clay and kauri gum industries. Adjacent sources of employment, apart from Auckland city, included the former Kingseat

Aviation has roots in Papakura Few people know that the first controlled powered flight in New Zealand took place over Papakura in February 1911. Pioneering aviators, Vivian and his brother, Leo Walsh built a British-designed Howard Wright biplane from imported plans. When completed, a group of spectators watched Vivian fly the ‘Manurewa’ more than 350m at a height of 20m over Glencora Park – an amazing feat for that era.

The brothers went on to found the New Zealand Flying School, with Vivian becoming the first New Zealander to obtain an aviator’s certificate and, of course, today, Ardmore Airfield, which is home to the New Zealand Warbirds Association, and local flying clubs, continue the area’s long association with aviation.

Manurewa – a central hub and Ravensthorpe Hospitals, Middlemore Hospital, the freezing works at Otahuhu-Westfield and, later, the Glenbrook Steel Mill. The New Zealand War, principally in Waikato, impacted on the whole area and all peoples, but colonial and imperial camps and specific events were more localised. Military camps were also established in the district during the Second World War: these included the New Zealand military camp on the northeast side of Papakura and United States Army camps near Pukekohe. However, all this is but a snapshot of the district’s background, yet, hopefully, it forms a springboard for exploring further because, there is some fascinating reading for those who wish to delve into the past.

Lying between Manukau centre and Papakura is the suburb of Manurewa with its central town centre housing a number of professional services such as accountants, lawyers, physiotherapists and orthodontists. In addition there are essential services such as libraries, schools, and the Local Board office. Manurewa has a varied retail offering which includes a variety of cafés, and beauty services and the town centre itself has a large number of medical and personal services. In particular, Manurewa is well known for the Auckland Botanic Gardens and also the Nathan Homestead, home to the Manurewa Community Arts Centres, both on Hill Rd. With congestion a problem across Auckland, Manurewa’s centrally located train station is ideal for commuting to other parts of Auckland City. Peace tree still stands Schools may be places of formal learning but when the Reverend W.C. Wood planted an acorn in the Papakura School grounds on July 19, 1919, as a contribution to the local peace celebrations after the First World War, the school yard took on new meaning. This â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;peace oakâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; was intended not so much as a war memorial but as a symbolic commemoration of peace and victory. The tree and accompanying plaque can still be seen near the north-western boundary of what is now Central Park, within view of the Papakura-Karaka First World War memorial.

Manukau For many years the wider Manukau district was mostly rural with settlement escalating after the Second World War. The 50’s then the 60’s and 70’s saw development of suburbs such as Manurewa, Hillpark, Totara Heights and later The Gardens plus other new housing subdivisions. With the amalgamation of Manukau County and Manurewa Borough in 1965, Manukau City was formed but it wasn’t until New Zealand-wide reorganisation of local government took place in 1989 that Manukau City absorbed Papatoetoe City and Howick Borough too. However, it lost some land to the newly formed Papakura District. For the next 21 years it thrived and under progressive mayors saw burgeoning growth across its multi-cultural region especially in the east. But then, on November 1, 2010 Manukau City Council was abolished and the governed area was amalgamated into the Manukau, Howick, ManurewaPapakura, and Franklin wards of the new Auckland ‘SuperCity’. New infrastructure saw the completion of the southwestern motorway from Manukau to connect with the north-western motorway via the new Waterview tunnel. Continuing works on the Southern Motorway has seen changes at the Takanini junction with road widening between Takanini and Papakura. A 4.5km cycle and pedestrian walkway is being built between Papakura and Takanini.

The name Manukau, from the Manukau Harbour west of the city, is of Maori origin, and means ‘wading birds’ although it has been suggested that the name of the harbour was also sometimes rendered as Manuka, meaning a ‘marker post’. Settling In 2020-21

Auranga estate blossoms The new Auranga housing estate accessed from Bremner Rd, Drury is well underway and, in time, is expected to have 1000-1500 new homes.

In late in 2017, Auranga’s managing director, Charles Ma, received Auckland Council planning committee’s approval to extend the initial subdivision. This involved rezoning the 84.6ha extension as mixed housing urban and mixed housing suburban. Mr Ma says he is immensely proud that everyone has worked so hard and well together, resulting in the application to rezone the greenfields site for residential development being unanimously supported.

In light of this thinking, the Auranga Coastal Walkway (bordering the residential development) has opened and will cover five kilometres with a dog park and playground on route. Mr Ma and his team of urban designers and planners have taken a macro – ‘more than insulation’ – view of sustainability.

Homes within Auranga (meaning ‘a life force that sets progress in motion’) will include apartments, duplexes, terraced and stand-alone homes. At least 200 will be affordable homes. “Auranga is about people, community and providing the foundations for good living,” says Mr Ma. “Often developments try to create a sense of community, but end up being just rows of houses with no heart and little atmosphere. I love timeless, elegant aesthetics and beautiful outdoor spaces. Auranga will be a celebration of traditional architecture and visually stunning surroundings that will encourage people to connect.

“Sustainability has to be the whole picture. We have designed the street network to reduce vehicle kilometres travelled per household by up to 30 per cent. And, with the expansion of employment nodes in Auckland’s south we hope to achieve employment levels as high as 92 per cent self-sufficiency; that’s more local jobs than anywhere else in urban Auckland,” Mr Ma says.

For people wanting to work outside the area, the proposed new railway station at Drury and electrification of the existing rail line will help provide congestion-free connections north and south. The subdivision already has easy motorway access and a new town centre and hospital are likely outcomes in the future. About 30,000 native and eco-sourced plants are also being planted at Auranga, making its green spaces particularly attractive.

Pre-school to high-school Education is one thing new South Auckland families donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to worry about. From childcare and pre-school facilities through to secondary college, as well as extra-curricular activities and tuition, the district is well catered for with new schools planned in some areas. When it comes to pre-school care, parents can be confident they will find something to suit their personal needs. In addition to playcentres and kindergartens, there are numerous childcare centres which offer all day care for children from working families. Some of these cater for very young babies and some may take primary aged children after school has finished. Centres adhere to strict regulations and offer proper sleeping arrangements for young infants. Some provide hot meals during the day and most have excellent indoor/ outdoor facilities. All employ trained staff and work to government guidelines when it comes to teacher/child ratios, social programmes and developmental skills.

Newcomers to South Auckland can be confident about local schools too. The wider area is well endowed with quality primary and secondary schools, some in rural districts which offer a touch of country to their focus. While most secondary schools and many primary schools are subject to zoning, it is possible in some cases for out of zone pupils to be placed in a school of choice if there are unfilled places. Some have no zoning restrictions. Most local schools have an open door policy when it comes to community interest and parental enquiries are welcomed. When seeking an appropriate school enquire about special programmes such as music, drama, catering, science, environmental sustainability and sports programmes. As well as formal state and private education facilities, there are also opportunities to attend hobby classes and special interest groups with tuition on a variety of subjects. Settling in pets Pets love routine and stability in their lives, so moving home can be a stressful time for them (and you!) But there are some simple steps pet owners can take to help them adjust. n Be sure to microchip. It’s a great idea to microchip pets (your vet will do this for you), and update their details on the NZ Companion Animal Register (www.animalregister. co.nz). This will help find them if they wander from the new home. n Provide a refuge room. When your cats move to a new home, keep them confined indoors (with a litterbox) for at least a week. Also provide a quiet ‘refuge room’ where they can avoid the stress and noise of unpacking. n Explore slowly. Take your dog on regular walks around the new neighbourhood so it can identify smells and start learning where this new home is located. Don’t rush things with your cats – they will explore outside when they’re ready.
