Welcome to the district... Congratulations on choosing to live in this colourful, multi-cultural area of Auckland – the south is a diverse community with a wealth of amenities for every age group. From Manukau in the north, through to Papakura in the south, the region is enjoying a resurgence of growth as prospective homeowners discover affordable and attractive housing among a range of properties within new and existing suburbs.

At the other end of the road, so to speak, is Papakura, a district which has been welcoming settlers for 150 years. Now, 2019 sees much needed and diverse housing projects well underway with green spaces and shopping, attracting those wanting value without sacrificing lifestyle. With its proud heritage, Papakura is facing a vibrant future boosted by new neighbourhoods including those in Takanini, Karaka and Drury. At the centre of this population growth is its handy location, close to the Manukau Harbour, with easy access to the Southern Motorway, being a bonus.

At Manukau, new apartments and hotels are springing up in close proximity to its comprehensive and central shopping city. These are also close to the new train station and Manukau Technical Institute campus situated at Hayman Park (at the corner of Manukau Station Road and Davies Avenue), directly above Manukau Station.

The area’s amenities also offer lifestyle opportunities with key facilities such as Massey Park Stadium and Pools, McLennan Park and the world-class facilities at Bruce Pulman Park, all making Papakura the sporting hub of South Auckland.

Nearby is the Manukau District Court, the long-standing fun park, Rainbow’s End, the architecturally relevant, Vodafone Events Centre, the Vector Wero Whitewater Park and the Manukau SuperClinic which provides specialist outpatient appointments and day procedures.

New locals will find an excellent museum, library, art gallery, theatres, plenty of dining facilities and much more. With a train and bus station in the heart of Papakura, transport links to Auckland’s CBD and centres such as Manukau, Sylvia Park and Newmarket are excellent.

But the wonderful facilities of South Auckland go beyond central Manukau. To the east there still remains easy access to the countryside and facilities such as pony clubs and sports parks.

Shopping, schools, medical facilities and professional and trade services abound ensuring the many new developments are already served by essential amenities. Other residential suburbs, lying between Manukau and Papakura, all offer their own particular appeal.

As one heads further south, the magnificent Auckland Botanic Gardens at Manurewa is free to the public and offers many hectares of gardens, walks and recreational areas as well as cafe facilities.

Built on rich heritage Housing around Papakura, Takanini, Drury and surrounds continues to mushroom with thousands of new homes either underway or in the pipeline for completion in the next two to five years.

Umupuia in the east (sometimes called Duder’s Beach). That particular Marae is the Mana Whenua Marae of the Ngai Tai iwi of Umpuia and Tamaki Makaurau and it has a unique place in the area’s history.

While modern apartments, terrace houses and affordable housing together with attractive estates bring new life and wealth to the south, it is timely to remember the district has rich Maori and European settler histories.

In addition to the land’s cultural and economic value to tangata whenua, the area, particularly further south and to the west, has long been in agricultural and horticultural use especially as one draws closer to Bombay and Pukekohe before heading west.

The name, Papakura is a Maori word believed to have originated from ‘papa’, meaning earth or flat and ‘kura’ meaning red, reflecting the rich, fertile soil upon which the community was founded. The tangata whenua of the area dates back many centuries, before European colonisation and hapu can trace their whakapapa back to the Tainui waka. There was a time when several pa stood across the region including at the western end of the Paerata ridge, while another stood above the plain east of Papakura at Red Hill, strategically placed to control the inner reaches of the harbour and north-south routes east to the Clevedon area. Two other pa sites were at the mouth of Slippery Creek which was associated with settlements and cultivations. The influential Maori presence, includes the Marae at

Also an early frontier settlement, the first Europeans made their home in these southern reaches of Auckland some 150 years ago under what was then the Waikato Immigration Scheme. Many of those original 4000 immigrants, tempted by the offer of free land, settled in the wider Papakura area and also further south in the Franklin district. They came mostly from the United Kingdom and the Cape Colony, leaving behind families and everything familiar to them. After a long sea voyage, they then faced long delays before even setting foot on ‘their’ new land with most living in disused army barracks, tents, or shacks. In particular, Drury’s development as a colonial settlement focused on the Great South Road, accommodation and rural services while the Papakura area once featured coal, clay and kauri gum industries. Adjacent sources of employment, apart from Auckland city, included the former Kingseat

Aviation has roots in Papakura Few people know that the first controlled powered flight in New Zealand took place over Papakura in February 1911. Pioneering aviators, Vivian and his brother, Leo Walsh built a British-designed Howard Wright biplane from imported plans. When completed, a group of spectators watched Vivian fly the ‘Manurewa’ more than 350m at a height of 20m over Glencora Park – an amazing feat for that era.

Settling In 2019-20

The brothers went on to found the New Zealand Flying School, with Vivian becoming the first New Zealander to obtain an aviator’s certificate and, of course, today, Ardmore Airfield, which is home to the New Zealand Warbirds Association, and local flying clubs, continue the area’s long association with aviation.

Manurewa – a central hub and Ravensthorpe Hospitals, Middlemore Hospital, the freezing works at Otahuhu-Westfield and, later, the Glenbrook Steel Mill. The New Zealand War, principally in Waikato, impacted on the whole area and all peoples, but colonial and imperial camps and specific events were more localised. Military camps were also established in the district during the Second World War: these included the New Zealand military camp on the northeast side of Papakura and United States Army camps near Pukekohe. However, all this is but a snapshot of the district’s background, yet, hopefully, it forms a springboard for exploring further because, there is some fascinating reading for those who wish to delve into the past.

Lying between Manukau centre and Papakura is the suburb of Manurewa with its central town centre housing a number of professional services such as accountants, lawyers, physiotherapists and orthodontists. In addition there are essential services such as libraries, schools, and the Local Board office. Manurewa has a varied retail offering which includes a variety of cafés, and beauty services and the town centre itself has a large number of medical and personal services. In particular, Manurewa is well known for the Auckland Botanic Gardens and also the Nathan Homestead, home to the Manurewa Community Arts Centres, both on Hill Rd. With congestion a problem across Auckland, Manurewa’s centrally located train station is ideal for commuting to other parts of Auckland City. Visit www.manurewabusiness.co.nz where you will find an extensive community and business directory.

Peace tree still stands Schools may be places of formal learning but when the Reverend W.C. Wood planted an acorn in the Papakura School grounds on July 19, 1919, as a contribution to the local peace celebrations after the First World War, the school yard took on new meaning. This ‘peace oak’ was intended not so much as a war memorial but as a symbolic commemoration of peace and victory. The tree and accompanying plaque can still be seen near the north-western boundary of what is now Central Park, within view of the Papakura-Karaka First World War memorial.

Fresh flowers for that special occasion or person, gourmet foods to please the palate, large range of gorgeous giftwares to suit all budgets, balloons, Wild Ferns body products and a large range of luxury silk flowers.

READY TO GROW Identified as a future metropolitan centre in the Auckland Unitary Plan, Papakura offers much to people looking to work, live and play in south-east Auckland. With a vibrant shopping centre, wide range of public transport options, new supermarkets and service businesses and booming real estate that includes a new wave of apartment developments under construction, the district is attracting people and businesses from all over Auckland.

COMMUNITY

Manukau For many years the wider Manukau district was mostly rural with settlement escalating after the Second World War. The 50’s then the 60’s and 70’s saw development of suburbs such as Manurewa, Hillpark, Totara Heights and later The Gardens plus other new housing subdivisions. With the amalgamation of Manukau County and Manurewa Borough in 1965, Manukau City was formed but it wasn’t until New Zealand-wide reorganisation of local government took place in 1989 that Manukau City absorbed Papatoetoe City and Howick Borough too. However, it lost some land to the newly formed Papakura District. For the next 21 years it thrived and under progressive mayors saw burgeoning growth across its multi-cultural region especially in the east. But then, on November 1, 2010 Manukau City Council was abolished and the governed area was amalgamated into the Manukau, Howick, Manurewa-Papakura, and Franklin wards of the new Auckland ‘SuperCity’. New infrastructure has seen the completion of the southwestern motorway from Manukau to connect with the north-western motorway via the new Waterview tunnel. Continuing works on the Southern Motorway also sees the addition of a 4.5km cycle and pedestrian walkway between Papakura and Takanini. The name Manukau, from the Manukau Harbour west of the

city, is of Maori origin, and means ‘wading birds’ although it has been suggested that the name of the harbour was also sometimes rendered as Manuka, meaning a ‘marker post’ with which an early chief is said to have claimed the area. Settling In 2019-20

Auranga estate underway The Auranga estate encompassing two Special Housing Areas accessed from Bremner Rd, Drury is well underway with the first subdivision on 68ha expected to yield 1000-1500 new homes over seven to nine years. In late in 2017, Auranga’s managing director, Charles Ma, received Auckland Council planning committee’s approval to extend the initial subdivision. This involves rezoning the 84.6ha extension as mixed housing urban and mixed housing suburban to provide for about 1300 more homes.

In light of this thinking, the first stage of a new Auranga Coastal Walkway (bordering the residential development) has opened and will eventually cover five kilometres with a dog park and playground on route. Pre-school to high-school Education is one thing new South Auckland families don’t have to worry about. From childcare and pre-school facilities through to secondary college, as well as extracurricular activities and tuition, the district is well catered for. When it comes to pre-school care, parents can be confident they will find something to suit their personal needs. In addition to playcentres and kindergartens, there are numerous childcare centres which offer all day care for children from working families. Some of these cater for very young babies and some may take primary aged children after school has finished. Centres adhere to strict regulations and offer proper sleeping arrangements for young infants. Some provide hot meals during the day and most have excellent indoor/ outdoor facilities. All employ trained staff and work to government guidelines when it comes to teacher/child ratios, social programmes and developmental skills. Newcomers to South Auckland can be confident about local

schools too. The wider area is well endowed with quality primary and secondary schools, some in rural districts which offer a touch of country to their focus. While most secondary schools and many primary schools are subject to zoning, it is possible in some cases for out of zone pupils to be placed in a school of choice if there are unfilled places. Some have no zoning restrictions. Most local schools have an open door policy when it comes to community interest and parental enquiries are welcomed. When seeking an appropriate school enquire about special programmes such as music, drama, catering, science, environmental sustainability and sports programmes. As well as formal state and private education facilities, there are also opportunities to attend hobby classes and special interest groups with tuition on a variety of subjects. Without doubt, South Auckland offers people of all ages and cultures many exciting and satisfying ways of learning in a structured or informal environment.

Finding health professionals Health and wellbeing experts abound throughout South Auckland which means there’s no need to travel far for quality health providers such as dentists, doctors, podiatrists, optometrists, physiotherapists, dieticians, personal trainers or massage therapists. Of course, skin and hair care, inner health, sound feet, beautiful hands, a fit body and a pain-free existence are all part of general wellbeing and are also catered for. In addition, South Auckland is home to the Manukau Super Clinic offering an outpatient service and a wide range of day procedures. There is no emergency department at the Manuaku Super Clinic; rather this is located at Middlemore Hospital in Papatoetoe. Private hospital treatment is available at Ormiston Hospital and at its complementary Specialist Centre at Botany South. However, Awhinatu Health, in Papakura, provides a wide

In addition to regular medical and counselling services, there are, of course, pharmacies and various complementary and alternative health practitioners and therapists, including acupuncturists, naturopaths, chiropractors, herbalists and more. Whether seeking a relaxing massage, traditional Chinese medicine or a herbal supplement, there is plenty of choice. So, explore your local area and discover a wealth of health practitioners, across a broad spectrum, who make wellbeing their priority.

Dental health The impact of sugary foods and drinks on our oral health has been highlighted many times – most people know how these can accelerate tooth decay especially when teeth are not given regular attention. Yet, it is also acknowledged that many folk fail to make dental and oral health a priority and subsequently can suffer unpleasant consequences. Fortunately, there is an abundance of local dentists and orthodontists making access to proper dental care easy. Their job is to help clients maintain healthy teeth (and gums) and keep them functioning for a lifetime.

We make it... we fit it... we fix it...

The first step is to have a check which will detect decayed and/or cracked teeth or fillings and will also cover jaw joints, gum disease, wisdom teeth, bite and medications that affect your teeth. Diet and nutrition are other aspects of a dental check with X-rays showing what’s happening in the bone around the teeth. If your dental care has been neglected don’t waste a minute; organise a dental visit and, once any initial work has been completed, keep checks regular. This will likely save a lot of heart-ache – or should that be toothache – in the future. After all, prevention is better than cure!

Pet s

Settling in pets Pets love routine and stability in their lives, so moving home can be a stressful time for them (and you!) But there are some simple steps pet owners can take to help them adjust. n Be sure to microchip. It’s a great idea to microchip pets (your vet will do this for you), and update their details on the NZ Companion Animal Register (www.animalregister.co.nz). This will help find them if they wander from the new home. n Provide a refuge room. When your cats move to a new home, keep them confined indoors (with a litterbox) for at least a week. Also provide a quiet ‘refuge room’ where they can avoid the stress and noise of unpacking. n Explore slowly. Take your dog on regular walks around the new neighbourhood so it can identify smells and start learning where this new home is located. Don’t rush things with your cats – they will explore outside when they’re ready. n Be prepared. Register with your new veterinary clinic as soon as possible. Don’t wait for a medical problem to arise. Call in, have a look around, and register your pet’s details.

Furnishings New residents moving to the local district could be buying into long established areas dating back many decades or they could be starting life over in a new build nestled in one of the latest developments. Regardless of the type of home one is buying, there may well be a need for new furniture and fittings or, in older homes, a touch of TLC. Fortunately, the local district has a range of retail stores and interior designers well able to ensure your new home soon looks like a dream home. Whether you want to put down new flooring, paint and wallpaper, update drapes, replace appliances or add decks and new landscaping, there is no shortage of skills and products. If you’re looking for a new suite, dining table or just some cushions, curtains and an ornament or two to add pizzazz, the local district has them all. As well as major shopping centres, there are plenty of home decorating options in areas such as Westfield Manukau, Papakura and Botany South. You could be surprised by the diversity.

Renovations With house prices climbing dramatically in recent years, many local homeowners have opted to renovate their existing home rather than sell and buy again. Often the most important areas to update are bathrooms and kitchens. Fortunately the local district is well endowed with highly professional kitchen, bathroom and building companies staffed by experienced people. Before starting a renovation scour magazines for ideas. Be sure to get several quotes and be sure each company is quoting on a level playing field – the same materials and the same quality of fixtures and fittings. Allow for extras and price rises. Many local companies will provide a free measure and quote and most will be happy to assist with ideas and practicalities that might change your initial thinking to some degree. If a garden renovation is on the agenda, enjoy exploring local nurseries and garden centres where you are sure to find landscaping supplies and garden art as well as a plethora of plants to transform the outdoors.

Home décor Whether moving into an existing property or a new build, most new home owners will be thinking décor, furnishings and landscaping. For a lucky few everything will be perfect. But for most there will, at least, be a little (or a lot) of redecorating in store. It may just be a new carpet, a splash of paint or a change of drapes or it may be a total makeover – complete new bathroom and kitchen plus every room revamped. In a new house, the colour scheme may be in place or you may be in the throes of bringing it all together and need to use local suppliers. Whatever the case, South Auckland offers excellent home décor and maintenance shops and services for every need. Naturally, when everything is finally done, it is important to protect one’s investment with ongoing maintenance and refurbishment. What’s more, because the home revolves around individual family needs which will change with time, it may become necessary to make major changes.

Rumpus rooms and swimming pools, which seemed a good idea when children were young, may no longer be required when reaching retirement age? However, before undertaking major alterations, decide whether you can do the job yourself or really do need professional help. Whether recreating space for a new use, extending the home to accommodate a growing family or ageing parents, or remodelling, it pays to have a sound plan. Fortunately, South Auckland is blessed with tradespeople and companies who can assist. Most cater for various budgets and some will bring samples to the home.

Maintaining a lifestyle block For some people the move to South Auckland may also mean relocating to one of the area’s small blocks with enough land to keep a few animals or a large garden. But a small block of say, between two and 10 acres, still means work even if it isn’t big enough from which to make a living. There will be fences to build and maintain, hedges to cut and possibly hay to make. You may even have a small arena to maintain if a pony is part of the package. There could be a need for chicken coops or animal shelters as well as sheds to house specialist tools and equipment. Think about security, veterinary services and the many other jobs which come with owning a lifestyle property. Fortunately, the South Auckland area is home to many rural orientated businesses which can provide the proper advice,

Takanini Horse Feeds Quality Stock Feed

services and expertise needed to ensure small blocks and the animals they support, remain in peak condition. While some landowners are also able handypersons, others work during the week and may need to employ experts to do those ‘must not neglect’ jobs. Before starting out on any project, and certainly before bringing in animals you may know little about, ensure you are fully prepared. Seek the advice of knowledgeable and experienced local people. You’ll find everything you need nearby from experts on animal care and feed right through to a mountain of services to keep your property and equipment in good order.
