With Christmas behind us, it’s wonderful to relax before the new working year begins in earnest.

Here’s hoping readers celebrated the arrival of 2019 in style and that the New Year brings health and happiness although I’m sure a little wealth wouldn’t go astray, either.

The holiday break means I can spend precious time with my grandsons – a few days in Wellington and a family outing to the musical, Aladdin! Of course, some folk will be busy making New Year resolutions and mine is to thank people and organisations when they give me pleasure.

For example, I love the VTNZ Mad Max-inspired advertisements. They make me smile but have I told VTNZ? No; I will now! When dining out and feeling replete, I also intend to commend the kitchen. A ‘thank-you chef’ is often called for but not delivered.

Recently, a spur of the moment handbag purchase had me beaming. Though keen to replace my very shabby bag I’d seen nothing suitable until I wandered into a Pukekohe shop and spotted three I liked. A most obliging young woman gave every assistance,

Wild west coast delivers on beauty Few would disagree that a fair weather drive from Wanaka to Frank Josef is one of the most beautiful in the world but HELEN PERRY discovered that even in the pouring rain this stretch of road is still stunning.

We know children can be full of surprises but, nevertheless, my husband were astonished by a birthday gift from son, daughter and son-in-law which gave him and I the makings of a six-day West Coast sojourn.

Son paid for flights in and out of the South Island and the other two, our rental car hire from Queenstown to Nelson. We booked overnight stays in Queenstown, Wanaka, Franz Josef and Greymouth with two nights in Nelson.

Although man about the house celebrated his significant birthday back in July, we took the trip in November, using it to also celebrate our wedding anniversary.

We were especially thrilled with the prospect of this journey because

it took in the one part of the South Island we have consistently missed – Wanaka to Franz Josef.

The last time we booked such a drive, summer of 1994, there was torrential rain with flooding in all directions. The road north of Wanaka was closed so bookings were cancelled and we remained in a very soggy Queenstown for the duration.

This time we made it through.

However, two days after arriving home, we heard the road between Wanaka and Fox Glacier had been closed, again because of washouts, so we timed it just right!

The rain set in after Wanaka but despite heavy downpours for this crucial leg, we were still in absolute awe. Waterfalls cascaded down

cliffs and hillsides, the flora was enchanting and it was a constant challenge for me, as driver, not to look this way and that as the everchanging view took our breath away.

While this part of the drive was exceptional, we were also captivated by the drive from Hokitika to Greymouth – huge waves and surf on this occasion was magnificent and, then, the wonderful scenery through Buller Gorge (including that scary swing bridge) was the kind to put on bucket lists.

Accommodation was pretty liberal along the route but as usual I opted for comfort – Novotel, Ramada, Scenic Hotel, Kingsgate, the Grand Mercure each offering a measure of individuality and charm. Novotel Queenstown has long been a favourite – on the lakefront, centre

of town, fabulous staff – love it.

Ramada was a pleasant surprise and while I thought the dining was limited we loved the outdoor pool area and setting. What’s more, we had planned to eat in town anyway so in-house dining wasn’t an issue.

Alchemy on the lakefront was our choice and it was indeed choice.

We splurged in Franz Josef and despite being damp and tired and arriving in yet another downpour, we loved this stopover. The alpinestyle lounge, with large open fire, charmed us immediately. Showered and changed we curled up on comfy armchairs with a wine and a book then later went up the few steps to the dining room for a delicious dinner. Our room was spacious, pristine and had a soft but not too soft bed – perfect.

I was sad to leave but it was onwards and upwards to Greymouth. On a Sunday afternoon all was quiet.…very, very quiet.

Booked at the Kingsgate on a great deal we knew the hotel had been there a good while so wondered what to expect.

Our room turned out to be extremely spacious and attractively furnished.

No, not five star, but quality carpet and very comfy. Upper level corridors were in need of paint and better lighting but refreshed public areas, including the bar, were welcoming.

Bar service was exemplary and the dining room cosy although, perhaps, the table and chairs could have done with an update. Nevertheless we enjoyed Kingsgate and would stay again.

Last stop was the Grand Mercure Monaco in Nelson where it was as if we had stepped into a charming English hamlet from yesteryear. A hand-crafted, character village of brick buildings, little lanes and lovely gardens it offered, one and two bedroom apartments many opening out onto the lawn and garden area.

The reception complex housed a lounge and the dining room adjacent to a lovely walled courtyard and overlooking a moat-style pond.

Unfortunately, there was no direct access through the building from the reception to the dining which might inconvenience some but didn’t worry us.

Just a 10-minute drive from town we loved the quieter location where we also passed some time at a similarly styled English pub, The Honest

Lawyer, just across the road with the sun having returned refreshments in the garden were perfect.

Nelson offered a multitude of fine places to eat, in fact so many came highly rated it was difficult to choose. As it turned out we discovered a little eatery gem out of town with indoor/outdoor flow and a covered verandah – the Sprig & Fern suited us to a tee…three times.

We first stopped for a cold craft beer then returned that same night for dinner – great choices such as whole flounder, salad and fries, $20 or burger and fries with either a beer or wine, $20 and other similarly priced options We both ordered the pork belly with salad, $19, and were

astonished at the generous serving.

We liked this little hideaway so much we went back the next day for bar snacks (shrimp popcorn $9) and a final wine, before heading for the airport and home.

Of course, the break wasn’t long enough. Ideally, I would have liked three days in Queenstown, and an extra night in both Wanaka and Franz Josef. Travelling early November meant there were good accommodation deals to be had and both airfares and our rental car from Omega in Queenstown were keenly priced.

We enjoyed a mix of upmarket and neighbourly dining venues and mostly ate breakfast at our accommodation. All up it’s a big thank you to our children for their thoughtfulness – we had a ball!

Cornwall coastal capers A 10-day walk along part of a well-trodden, historic and largely coastal track, the South West Coast Path, which starts at Minehead in Devon and ends at Poole in Dorset, was included in tramper JOHN SPILLER’S recent holiday to the United Kingdom. Here he outlines his 160 kilometre trek from St. Ives to Falmouth.

There was no way I could manage the greater coast path walk of 1013km in the time available when visiting the UK earlier this year – that would have taken about three months. Settling for a shorter option seemed a good compromise.

The journey didn’t start well. Four and a half hours by train from Paddington Station in London took my wife and I to Plymouth where we had to leave the train temporarily because thieves had stolen a section of electrical cabling from the line’s signalling system.

Train movements in and out of Cornwall came to a halt for three hours all because a scrap value of the copper was obviously seen as loot too good to forgo!

Underway again, we arrived in St Ives around 8pm where, on checking into the Queens Hotel, we had just enough time for a meal before climbing three flights of stairs to our room and plumping into bed, utterly exhausted.

London and I met up with six other Kiwis who had started walking the path a few days earlier, heading south from Padstow.

The group was led by John Dobbs, owner of Napier Travel and a wellknown trip leader working on behalf of the Federated Mountain Club’s travel club.

The next day was spent in St Ives where we visited the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden – amazing – then walked to the Tate Gallery on the other side of the peninsula. Both are ‘must dos’ if you’re remotely interested in modern British art.

The following day was warm and bright as we left St Ives and headed off around the coast. The sea glimmered under the sun and wild flowers, including bluebells and foxgloves, added colour to lush greenery all around us.

Walking was pleasant and after 11 kilometres, which included a small detour for a cold beer at the Tinners Arms, we arrived at our overnight

accommodation in Zennor.

The last couple of kilometres took us along a narrow country lane where every time a vehicle approached we had to press ourselves into hedgerows festooned with stinging nettles.

Even a gentle brush against one left a painful tingling for quite a few minutes.

Up early the next day we headed back to the nearby coastal path after an ample breakfast. The day promised much once the watery sun had filtered through a sea mist which had rolled in overnight.

As the day progressed, views along the coast were simply stunning with craggy headlands and interesting coves dotted along the route as we approached Pendeen Head.

From there we headed inland to Geevor, a noted tin mining region, and ended up at the tin mine café for lunch; it afforded patrons a superb ocean vista. Pressing on, we briefly explored some of the old tin mining ruins including

magnificent tall brick chimneys and an engine room under restoration.

The next landmark was Cape Cornwall, the most westerly part of Great Britain. It was too big a detour to the lookout so we headed for our next overnighter at Bosavern House, near St Just. A 17th century, two-storey house, Bosavern had been lovingly restored and it was there I had my best breakfast of the walk.

Setting out again next day, we traversed some paddocks to find the gently undulating track and then meandered towards Sennen Cove, a picturesque, sandy beach, popular in summer.

After lunch in a delightful waterfront café we passed the lifeboat station and made the gentle climb to Land’s End, one of the most visited spots in Cornwall. The promontory afforded a wonderful view to an offshore lighthouse and yachts plied the waters far below.

unaware that the rest of my group had stopped to explore an old lookout station. It was two hours before we met up again.

until we reached the causeway leading to St Michael’s Mount, an island separated from the town of Marazion by the sea.

That evening we reached Porthcurno after rounding the ‘toe’ of Cornwall, famous for its cable company and its communications links to other parts of the world.

On the high point there is a castle, which had its origins as a priory, and also a church dating back to 1135 ad. Two hours exploring the battlements and the chambers inside worked up an appetite so we headed back before the incoming tide could cut us off.

Day four dawned fine and the group assembled for a quick look around the famous Minack outdoor theatre, hewn spectacularly into the cliff face and which hosts open air performances of Shakespeare’s plays.

With time slipping away and 18kms to cover, we moved on, enjoying the wild flowers, sunshine and azure coastal waters from above. Passing through Lamorna and the charming boat harbour village of Mousehole (pronounced Mousel), we arrived in Penzance, famous for its pirates.

A Thai dinner brought our day to an end.

Feeling a bit weary, we opted to cut the afternoon walk to Porthleven and waited for a bus. Fish and chips by the boat harbour rounded off the day.

Next morning, we woke to bleak skies and a moderate onshore breeze. Jackets were necessary as we rounded the old church and headed south along Porthleven’s high, stone seawall which deflects the onslaught from Atlantic storm waves in winter.

This was our longest day’s walking covering 21kms. Passing monuments to shipwrecks, rugged

weather worn cliffs and Kynance Cove, where some parts of the TV series, Poldark were filmed, we arrived late afternoon at Lizard Point, the southern-most part of Great Britain where refreshments were in order.

An improvement in the weather next day saw us set off along the cliff tops passing through delightful Cadgwith Cove and Kennack Sands beach, eventually marching into coastal Coverack village.

Day eight was wet and our first damp day. We were due for another long walk as well as a ferry crossing but because of the uncertain weather, trip leader, John called on a shuttle and our friendly minibus driver soon had us at the ferry landing where the ferryman tore himself away from the hotel on the other side of the Herford River, to ensure we crossed safely.

Once across we walked the remaining nine kilometres to the quaint town of Mawnan Smith. I stayed at the Meudon Hotel (the others had booked a B&B) and,

after a shower, I took a short cut back, surprising a scavenging fox in a paddock. It disappeared quickly and I carried on to the Red Lion pub for dinner.

Our last day on the path was drizzly but luckily it was only nine kms to Falmouth, our final destination.

Emerging from the last section of overgrown path we crossed Swanpool Beach, passed a line of multi-coloured bathing sheds, and soon hit the footpath leading to Falmouth, a major maritime port with dry dock facilities.

The adventure was all but over apart from a celebratory dinner that evening and making arrangements to catch the train to St. Austel in the morning.

This trip was well planned by John who organised local company, Mac’s Transport to shuttle our overnight bags to each night’s accommodation, easing our load.

So, would I like to walk more of the South West Coast Path? You bet.

‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do.’ And yet, even if you’re living on the other side of the world, centuries since the sun set on one of history’s grandest empires, we should always be encouraged to Rome if we want to, JON RAWLINSON believes.

Tana Umaga coined the phrase that rugby is not tiddlywinks. However, compared to medieval competitive fighting, it might as well be!

Although Lachlan Matheson is relatively new to the sport of HMB (Historical Medieval Battle), the former ACG Strathallan student has already fallen foul of more than just a few educated blows.

“The best way to describe HMB is ‘competitive pushing over’,” he jokes. “But, seriously, it can get pretty vicious; it’s a very dangerous sport and I’ve seen some bad injuries.

“It’s one of just a few activities which are academic and fun but brutal at the same time – I can attest to that! There are rules to ensure safety and, although I’ve had some very bad bruising, I haven’t suffered any serious harm yet.”

Armed with an interest in history as well as martial arts (including Kyokushin karate, Wing Chun kung-fu) and Greco-Roman wrestling, Lachlan became involved with re-enactment clubs, ImperiumRomana and The Company of the Wolpertinger a few years ago (see secondary story). Now, he is taking his passion one step further, engaging in HMB and HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts).

“Re-enactments are games using traditional techniques, tactics and equipment, but HEMA and HMB are most definitely sports,” he

explains. “The weapons are blunt but they’re still heavy so, generally, there are weight limits in place.

They are designed to ensure they shouldn’t kill anyone but, pretty much, anything short of that is fair game.”

During medieval combat, the sharp end of a sword or axe could seriously ruin someone’s day but blunt force trauma often proved even more damaging.

Tournaments (with various disciplines and categories for individuals and teams, men and women) are held nationwide at such events as the Auckland Highland Games, the upcoming NZ Medieval Faire (Tauranga, January 19-20) and NAAMA (National Association of Ancient and Medieval Arts.

Rules can vary – some are more restrictive as to where and how an opponent may be struck – with safety precautions taken. However, injury is par for the course and accidents happen.

While Lachlan may not be quite ready to take part in HMB’s major annual event, he has designs on fighting for his country at the annual Battle of Nations in the future.

“My goal is to represent New Zealand and I’d love to be involved in the Battle of Nations. I think there were more than 30 countries competing last year. It’s highly

competitive; it’s intense. You have to be well prepared and don’t tend to walk away from it unscathed... if you’re still walking at all!”

At last year’s tournament in Rome, approximately 80 people were hospitalised. Russia claimed top honours overall followed by the Ukraine and Poland. Lachlan says American, British, French, German and even Australian teams also tend to perform reasonably well.

“The Russian team is excellent, they’re fierce! There’s a joke that they consider it practice for their national riot squad,” he laughs.

“Considering the size of the teams New Zealand can field, due to our population, we’re not one of the top nations but we’re getting there.”

Although being (literally) fighting fit and able to avoid blows altogether is ideal, effective armour is essential when engaged in the sport. Both weapons and armour are made (wherever possible) to be historically faithful but modern materials (including titanium) and techniques are used where appropriate.

“There are two vital pieces of equipment: a helmet and gloves.

Even a simple pair of leather gloves can help because swords and axes can do some gnarly damage to fingers. The helmet is most important, particularly in HMB fights where concussions are quite common.

“Layers of wool (gambeson) are worn underneath metal armour to provide additional protection.

These days, some guys wear motorbike armour underneath a thin layer of gambeson but that’s frowned upon; it will probably continue to be used in re-enactment (as long as it’s hidden from view) but will, most likely, be banned in competitive fights soon enough.”

Ironically, Lachlan has utilised modern technology to help him ‘suit up’ before he goes to ‘work.’

“You need some basic blacksmithing skills before you can learn how to make armour. I’m mostly self-taught and there’s a lot of trial and error involved. I’m building up my skills and improving all the time,” he says.

“There’s also heaps of information online, too, including Facebook groups I can connect with if I run into problems. The best armourers and smiths really don’t want to see their craft die out so they’ll do almost anything to help.”

I ask whether his unusual pastime worries his family.

“My dad, Phil, and Uncle Grant [Matheson] were into wrestling when they were younger so I don’t think they worry too much. Dad just rolls his eyes. Actually, I think he’s probably more worried about me when I’m out with my mates at night!” www.southmagazine.co.nz

RE-ENACTING UP – THE LIFE OF LACHLAN You won’t find a Biggus Dickus or Sillius Soddus in the Imperium Romana (aka Imperial Romans of NZ) but it’s clear there is a healthy sense of humour amid the ranks of this re-enactment club.

“But, during demonstrations, we make sure there’s no modern stuff showing and, for the most part, we try to keep things authentic. In the Roman camps, for example, all the commands are issued in Latin.”

“The amount of Monty Python quotes and references we use is insane! We have some guys with comic names but nothing quite so obvious as those,” club member, Lachlan Matheson laughs.

Lachlan is also a member of The Company of the Wolpertinger, modelled on German mercenaries from the late medieval period.

“There is a lot of fooling around and silly business. At the recent Armistice Day event in Cambridge, for example, we had a heap of re-enactors in gear from various periods, driving around in a World War Two bren gun carrier. That was a lot of fun.

Rather than faithfully re-creating specific historical battles, due to numbers, New Zealand’s re-enactment clubs mostly present skirmishes demonstrative of a particular era.

“There is a degree of structure but quite often people go ‘off script’ in the heat of combat. For example, when the New Zealand Norsemen Club is involved, it can

turn into a free-for-all,” Lachlan confirms. “Imperium-Romana is more about representing how the Roman army fought but we are aiming to do full scale re-enactments and, across New Zealand, more people are joining clubs.”

Originally from Dunedin, Lachlan is no stranger to adventure having spent much of his childhood travelling the world with his family on a yacht in the Pacific and in a motor home across the Americas. After the family returned and settled in Hunua – the wider Matheson family has farmed in the Hunua/Paparimu area for five generations – Lachlan attended ACG Strathallan.

“I was always interested in reading history and actually wanted to be a knight when I

was a kid,” he says. “I’ve also read plenty of books such as Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones, and I’m a massive fan of Shakespeare.”

Now, Lachlan works for his father’s business Out of the Dark Mushrooms, based in Takanini.

Although he’s yet to make firm career plans, his passion for history, combat sport and re-enactments could become aligned to form an interesting career path.

“At least half of the Imperial Romans Club worked [as extras] on the recent Roman Empire TV series,” he says. “I also have a mate who’s about to qualify as a medieval stunt actor through the New Zealand Stage Combat School so that’s something I’d be keen to look into.”

With long, hot days on the horizon here is a reminder of some safety tips to keep pets happy and healthy this summer.

Signs a dog is overheated include heavy panting, rapid heart rate, bright or dark red gums, excessive thirst, excessive drooling, lethargy, wobbliness/staggering, bloody diarrhoea, vomiting, seizures and unconsciousness. Dogs with heat stroke should be cooled by wetting down and providing cool water, and then need to see a vet.

If you can’t hold your hand on a surface for five seconds, then don’t expect your dog to walk on it.

Preventing heat stroke: • Don’t leave dogs in cars. Even with an outside temperature of 24°C, within 10 minutes the inside of a car can reach 38°C, and within 30 minutes 50°C. Recent changes to New Zealand’s Animal Welfare Law now allow Inspectors to issue fines to people who leave dogs in hot cars.

• Exercise dogs in the early morning or late evening.

• Provide plenty of fresh water and shade.

• Provide a paddling pool for dogs to cool down in.

Be especially aware of animals with predisposing conditions which are more prone to heat stress during hot weather. These include brachycephalic dogs (those with

Remove gently with tweezers.

in your house?

We can all say cheese… please! But who knows their soft cheese from hard cheese? To help you say more than just ‘cheese’, SOUTH has listed just a few varieties and how they are best appreciated.

BRIE: Most Kiwis love this French dessert cheese traditionally made using unpasteurised cow’s milk.

It has a slightly furry rind and the inside texture is smooth and creamy. Ideal on an antipasto platter or in the summer picnic basket, serve with crackers – try lavosh – crusty bread, a dash of relish, a slice of salami, a taste of sweet gherkin and a few grapes accompanied by a glass of bubbles or a sweet but cold dessert wine.

CHÈVRE: A deliciously smooth and creamy goat’s milk cheese from France, it is best eaten fresh and is often combined with herbs and garlic; adds a punchy element to salads and pasta. Enjoy with a glass of rosé.

EMMENTAL: A famous cheese, which originated in Switzerland but is made globally. It’s the one which is full of holes! Actually, the holes are gas bubbles formed by bacteria during the fermentation process! A medium hard cheese, it is popular in sauces, fondues and toasted sandwiches because it melts easily.

It is also great when paired with apples, grapes, peaches, and pears on a cheese tray. Enjoy with merlot,

reisling, beaujolais or bubbles. If you’re a beer drinker, try a Belgian beer, a light lager, or a stout to complement the slightly fruity taste of this cheese.

FETA: Originating from Greece and made from a combination of sheep and goat’s milk, feta cheese is generally stored in salty brine. The texture ranges from smooth and creamy to crumbly, dry and very salty – perfect for crumbling over salads, particularly Greek salads, as well as other vegetable dishes.

Great for dips and with fruit; a good match with merlot or reisling.

MOZZARELLA: Best known as topping on pizza, this stringy, white Italian cheese made from buffalo milk can be eaten fresh, added to lasagne, melted over meatballs and is also great in salads and sandwiches. It works as a stand in for Mexican cheese –enchiladas smothered in mozzarella – so good! Pinot Grigio pairs well with fresh mozzarella.

PARMIGIANO REGGIANO: Although most commonly referred to as Parmesan cheese, Parmigiano Reggiano is produced in select regions throughout Europe – the provinces of Parma, Reggio Emilia and Modena – and is the real deal.

Traditionally produced from cow’s milk, this popular cheese is hard, granulated and crumbly with a strong flavour. Shave or grate over pasta and salads, Parmigiano reggiano can also be stirred into sauces and soups or eaten as a snack – love that bite. It pairs well with everything from Italian dessert wines or sparkling wines, to fullbodied reds, softer merlots and Italian whites such as Pinot Grigio.

ROQUEFORT: Originating from France, Roquefort is traditionally made with sheep’s milk. It is sharp and tangy but also very creamy – a favourite for lovers of true blue cheese. Be warned though, this one has a pungent smell.

Enjoy alongside figs, nuts and quince paste or on some freshly baked crusty

bread – divine. Whether buying genuine Roquefort or another blue cheese variety don’t be off put by pungency or looks. Rich and creamy, blue cheeses can add salty and savoury depth to many dishes and even a hint of sweetness depending on the variety. They can cut the heat in a spicy dish, balance bitter greens in a salad, or enhance the natural sweetness of fruits and nuts. Acquire the taste and you’ll love them forever. Pair with cabernet sauvignon.

TALEGGIO: A semi-soft, washedrind Italian cheese made from cow’s milk. Despite its strong smell, the flavour is mild with a slight tang being rather fruity and buttery. The flavour becomes more pronounced as the cheese ages.

Taleggio also melts well and has more flavour than mozzarella.

Perfect when paired with a bold chardonnay.

Beef and mushroom ROLLS WITH RED WINE JUS (Makes 4 servings)

INGREDIENTS For the sauce: • 2 cups red wine • 1/2 cup demi-glace sauce • 2 shallots, finely chopped • 1 tbsp fresh thyme • 2 bay leaves • 4 tbsp cold unsalted butter • Salt and pepper, to taste For the rolls: • 450 g (1 lb.) mushrooms • 1 large onion • 3 shallots • 2 tbsps. butter • 2 tsps chopped fresh Italian parsley • Salt and pepper • 4 mild or spicy Italian or breakfast sausages • 4 slices sandwich or minute steak • 8 slices bacon • Fresh parsley

METHOD Finely chop the mushrooms, onion and shallots. Melt butter in a skillet placed on the barbecue grill and

sauté onions and shallots until translucent. Add mushrooms and cook over low heat for around 5 minutes, stirring often.

Incorporate the chopped parsley at the end of the cooking time.

Season with salt and pepper. Set aside. In the same skillet, sauté sausages until golden brown on all sides. Set aside.

Spread one-quarter of the mushroom mix over a slice of sandwich or minute steak. Roll around a sausage, then roll two slices of bacon over the steak.

Secure with butcher’s twine or toothpicks. Repeat for the three remaining servings. In the same skillet, brown the rolls on all sides and then cook, covered, for about 10 minutes. Set aside.

In the same skillet, sauté the shallots for the sauce. Deglaze with the red wine, scraping the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon.

Add the demi-glace sauce, thyme and bay leaves. Bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat and let it simmer until the liquid has reduced by half the original quanity.

cooks note Rather than make your own demi-glace sauce, buy a powder packet mix for a quick result.

Filter the mixture using a fine strainer and discard any remaining solids, keeping only the liquid portion. Pour liquid into a small preheated saucepan and gently add the cold butter. Stir constantly

until the sauce is smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Cut each roll into three slices and arrange on the plate. Drizzle with sauce and garnish with parsley.

DEVILLED EGGS AND AVOCADO Here a fresh take on a good old ‘bring a plate’ standby which is sure to have your guests asking for, “more, please!” As delicious as they are nutritious, they’ll add a colourful element to your party table or when hors d’ oeuvres and cocktails are called for.

(Makes 24 hors d’oeuvres)

While the eggs are boiling, prepare a large bowl of very cold water — make sure to add ice!

After 12 minutes, plunge eggs in the cold water. Once nice and cold, peel off the shell, cut the eggs in half (lengthwise) and remove the yolks.

While eggs are cooling in water, cook bacon in the microwave until crispy, and chop into smallish pieces; put to one side.

Mix the egg yolks, peeled avocadoes, lime juice, tabasco sauce and salt in a food processor until smooth and creamy. Use a small spoon or pastry bag to stuff the egg halves. You should have enough stuffing to make 24 nice mounds.

To finish, top stuffed eggs with bacon bits and either chopped or small sprig of Italian parsley, serve of tray decorated with a few parsley sprigs. south | january 2019 |

Street artists embrace Kiwi culture Making the leap from tagging buildings in south Auckland to becoming internationally-renowned street artists, husband-and-wife team Janine and Charles Williams are trail-blazers when it comes to art. ANGELA KEMP caught up with one half of this remarkable couple.

It was a typical busy day on Great South Road in Papatoetoe where Janine Williams was putting the finishing touches to a new mural on the frontage of Hunters Plaza. The cordoned off area where she was working alongside the artwork’s designer, Papatoetoe High School student, Saffire Moore, didn’t stop a steady stream of curious passers-by stopping to ask what they were doing.

There’s nothing Janine likes better than engaging with the public when she is transforming a bland concrete façade.

“Art and colour quickly change an environment and I think New Zealanders in particular are very hands on and creative,” she says.

“So when you have something like this [the Hunters Plaza mural] in your community, people respond very quickly and they keep stopping to talk and tell us how much they love it. I love the way art does that.”

The Williams’ have turned a passion for their art into a successful professional career with a large client list which includes several government departments and institutions, private commissions and festival projects.

Their distinctive style can be seen in urban landscapes across Auckland (such as a fantastic tui at Manukau Mall)and many other towns across New Zealand .They have achieved celebrity status in street art circles across the world and are renowned for their incorporation of Maori design and endemic birds in the colourful murals they create.

“Charles and I combine the different aesthetics of what we love to paint together. So, Charles paints the birds and I am really interested in the design and cultural background.

The couple draw their intricatelydesigned murals freehand, using aerosol cans and acrylic paint.

“We have always been bigger and more popular internationally than at home so we have travelled a fair bit and become established overseas.

Now, slowly back here, people are going, ‘oh, is that what you do!’.”

Janine grew up in Papatoetoe and went to Papatoetoe High School.

“I’ve always been really passionate about art but back then it was a bit different and art wasn’t a reality career choice. I was into fonts and calligraphy – graffiti just looked like a different working of that. I pretty much learned on the street which is where I met Charles – we were both graffiti artists and attended the same local church, Faith City in Manukau.”

Charles is a founding member of TMD (The Most Dedicated) and led the crew to international success winning the 2006 and 2008 International Graffiti Art competitions in Germany.

In 2010 the crew was invited to take part in street-art event in Florida where international artists were invited to paint murals across the US resort city.

It proved to be the tipping point for the Williams who paid for the trip from their first major commercial contract, painting murals for KiwiRail on Portacoms along the rail network. The murals combined native birds and contemporary Maori designs – imagery Charles and Janine have continued to include in their public exhibitions and private collections.

The couple and their four children aged 17, 15, 14 and 12, live on the Waimahia Inlet at Weymouth. Janine says the youngsters are creative but not into paint.

“They’re into building, making things, fashion and music, that sort of world. We try and limit the number of international trips we do together at the same time so one of www.southmagazine.co.nz

COLOURFUL MURAL BRIGHTENS STREETSCAPE us is home as often as possible.

“We say, ‘no’ to as many projects as we say, ‘yes’ just because of the whole balancing act. But our life has always been like this since they [the children] were born; they’re used to it.”

Janine says street art and murals have really taken off in the past couple of years.

“There are enough professional artists in New Zealand now to quickly change an environment on a budget that costs a whole lot less than maybe one bronze sculpture.”

The couple’s international recognition continues to grow.

In 2014 Charles was invited to participate in a Guinness World Records attempt, making the world’s longest graffiti scroll – a 2245-metre art work in Dubai. The following year, he took out top spot at the Ono’u Graffiti Festival in Tahiti. www.southmagazine.co.nz

He has even had a spray can named after him – Phat1 True Royal is on the range of global spray paint and art suppliers Ironlak.

Impressively, one mural by the couple featured alongside a collection of works by perhaps the most famous street artist of all, England-based global graffiti artist Banksy at the Tauranga Art Gallery.

Despite the accolades coming their way, Charles and Janine haven’t forgotten their roots. The couple are also passing on their knowledge and experience to new generations of budding street artists through workshops and school programmes and have helped develop a school tag-free scheme in conjunction with police.

Papatoetoe High School student Saffire Moore’s dream of becoming an artist took a big leap forward when she won a mural competition organised by Westfield’s Hunters Plaza late last year.

The 16-year-old beat 24 other entries to see her design re-created on the shopping mall’s façade by acclaimed street artists, Janine and Charles Williams.

Saffire (pictured below with Janine) said the brief was to design a mural which portrayed the diversity of Papatoetoe’s

Ultra violet Ultra violet was Pantone’s 2018 Colour of the Year and, in the company’s own words, this ‘dramatically provocative hue’ is both ingenious and visionary, a sentiment that clearly resonated with international fashion and interior designers.

Subsequently not only the purest form of ultra violet, but varying shades of purple, lavender and even mauve, emerged on runways and at design expos during the past year.

Long associated with royalty, a symbol of luxury and power, it has been the regal colour adopted by many nations and evident as far back as the Byzantine Empire when it was worn by rulers of that realm.

Over the years, it has been seen as erotic, seductive ad conjuring up the mysteries of the cosmos.

On the other hand, lavender fields are admired for their fragrance and beauty while the purple gemstone, amethyst is reputed to have calming properties.

More than one musician has had a love affair with purple – late greats, Prince sang Purple Rain while Jimi Hendrix sang Purple Haze, a reference to psychedelic drugs and forever linking the colour to an era of social, musical and artistic change starting in the mid 60’s.

Many a garden has also incorporated the beauty of purple – violets, pansies, wisteria, salvias, clematis, allium, not to mention lavender, and many more. While 2018 has come to an end, the Southerm Hemisphere is in the heart of summer and there is no time like now to acknowledge the power of purple.

But the past year saw the vibrancy of ultra violet dominate the European summer – Gucci, for example, took purple to new fashion heights while many bedrooms and bathrooms saw various shades of purple make a strong statement either as feature walls or accessories.

If you run a business, then unless you are very lucky, at some stage you will be chasing someone who owes you money. And, if you are unlucky you may find yourself in a significant dispute with another party. While there is no fixed rule which can apply in every situation, you can certainly help yourself by following some simple guidelines.

At the start of a new year, we tend to look for opportunities to wipe the proverbial slate clean and start again.

A few tips that might assist:

Do a yearly review Take stock of where you’ve been and appreciate all of the accomplishments you’ve made in the last year.

Finish what you started What projects, errands, and general list of to-do items do you have left over from the previous year which you can complete in two hours or less? Do them now to clear your mind of these old items.

Be realistic Dreaming is fabulous and highly recommended, but if you want to accomplish some improvements in your life, you need to be realistic.

Focus on what you really want Speaking of dreaming, ask yourself what your dream looks like. What are you doing in the dream? How are you living? Who is in the dream with you? What does a typical day entail?

These questions will help you define what lifestyle you really want and give you ideas about how you can achieve that lifestyle.

Put yourself at the top of the list Using the information you gained above by determining what you really want, put yourself at the top of the list this year. The old adage is true; we really can’t help others until we help ourselves.

A credit check can help identify potential clients who are less likely to pay, and once a client is late in paying, a simple and friendly reminder can have a positive effect.

Taking a reasoned and sensible approach to disagreements can also help with resolution of disputes rather than being too confrontational.

Having a well drafted contract with a client, supplier or customer is a good start. It will be much easier to get judgment in court if you have a comprehensive contract rather than simple handwritten terms recorded on an A4 piece of paper – something I still see to this day!

A well drafted contract, under which you supply goods or services and invoice for payment, should also contain some form of personal guarantee to offer additional protection if you are dealing with a company.

Another thing I recommend to clients is that they keep written records of important discussions.

In a world where everyone uses some form of written media such as email or texts, there is no reason why a dispute that ends up in Court should come down to a “he said she said” argument with the judge having to make an assessment of who should be believed.

It is much easier to point to an email confirming a discussion rather than trying to remember what was said face-to-face or during a telephone conversation which took place months or even years in the past. It takes only a couple of minutes to send an email confirming the conversation.

Some people access contracts available online for a fee or you may adapt a contract from a similar business and pick and choose clauses they think are important.

The danger with this approach is that contracts can sometimes be ineffective or plainly inappropriate.

Court is obviously the last choice when it comes to a dispute when all other reasonable options have been exhausted. While many people find court expensive and time consuming, it is also the most effective way to get an outcome. A court proceeding may also open up other forms of alternative disputes resolution such as mediation.

I have seen contracts obviously taken from the internet referring to legislation from overseas which has no application to New Zealand law.

Other things to look out for are ‘inclusions’ and ‘exclusions’ – what work will be done and what is left out. All quotes should have these and, if painting is excluded for example, you will need to factor that cost in at a later date.

PS and PC Sums. What are they and why are they on the quote? PC (Prime Cost) items are generally items you, the client, will need to choose and the builder is just putting in an estimated cost. These could be bathroom fittings, appliances or flooring for example.

PS (Provisional Sums) are cost estimates for materials and work where the extent can’t be specifically detailed. That would often include earthworks as you just don’t know what’s underneath!

By going through the quote in detail you may find that there are items missing, so it’s about making sure at the start everything is there that you are expecting.

If you are not sure, you will need to ask the builder to clarify the quote. We always like to sit down with our potential clients early on and walk through the quote, to make sure everyone fully understands everything.
