A STRATEGY to provide sports facilities for a growing population has been put together to help the Howick Local Board’s decision-making for sport and provision of active recreation facilities now and in the future. The Howick Ward’s population is expected to grow substantially over the next 15 years, from close to 140,000 people at present, reaching nearly 180,000 in 2030. In his 2014/2015 annual report, the board’s chairman, David Collings, says the focus has continued to be on completing sports field and infrastructure development at Barry Curtis and Lloyd Elsmore parks. Further planting and pedestrian

links to sports fields at Barry Curtis Park are progressing, and a community shelter was opened last February. Five kilometres of run/walk/cycle markers have been put in place. At Lloyd Elsmore Park, drainage and irrigation have been undertaken for the ‘top flat’ sports fields used by cricket and rugby, with ongoing work yet to be completed. Other sports field upgrades of irrigation and/or sand carpet and slitting was carried out at Howick and Paparoa Domains, Elm, Millhouse and Rogers parks. WE ALL want our Dad to come back from a great day of boating, boasting about his latest catch. But sometimes, if it’s a sunny day with calm water, water safety isn’t at the top of his priorities when he sets out – and we’ve seen the unexpected happen all too often. So this Father’s Day, help keep Dad safe and give him peace of mind by ensuring he has everything he needs, before he heads out on the water. • Life jackets. Boats, especially ones under 6m in length, can sink very quickly. Wearing a correctly-fitted life jacket will increase Dad’s survival time in the water, if he has an accident. • Communications. Being able to communicate on the water is vital – options should include having a Marine VHF radio as well as flares, a locator beacon and a cellphone. In addition, Dad should also complete the Coastguard Maritime VHF Radio Operator course, so he knows how to use the radio properly and legally. • The latest skills and training. Just because Dad owns a boat, doesn’t mean he can’t learn more about it – it may help him come home safe one day. The Coastguard ‘Day Skipper’ course will give him the perfect all-round grounding he needs to get maximum fun and safety from his chosen vessel. • Boatie’s best mate. A Coastguard membership will give Dad and the rest of the family peace of mind every time

he heads out on the water, with 24/7 search and rescue, boatie information, discounts on training courses and more. Dad always looks after you, now it’s your turn to help take care of him. This Father’s Day, get Dad a gift that shows you care – a Coastguard Voucher can be used on one of our popular Education Courses* or even a Coastguard Membership. From learning how to operate a Marine VHF radio or GPS unit, getting tips on engine maintenance, through to our popular and must-have Day Skipper Course, Coastguard education courses will help Dad have fun and stay safe on the water. If he is a practical man maybe he would like to do the training onboard his own boat. We have some great tutors who will come aboard and help fine tune skills or teach new ones. If Dad is already confident and trained up, how about upskilling other members of the crew? Coastguard also delivers a seminar for women called ‘Suddenly in Charge’, which covers key topics to keep safe should the skipper find themselves incapacitated. For information on any of these courses or to book, visit www. coastguard.org.nz or call Coastguard Northern Region on 0508 RESCUE (737 283).

Sports strategy

➤➤From page 19 the board’s decision-making for sport and active recreation provision in the area now and in the future. Implementation of the plan is underway, with funding allocated from its 2014/2015 discretionary budget to the following projects: ■■ Athletics: $130,000 to the Pakuranga Athletics Charitable Trust (PACT) towards construction of the pavillion at the 100-metre finish line of the athletics track at Lloyd Elsmore Park, on the condition that the funding will be released when PACT has secured the balance of the funds required to complete the pavilion project. Extension of a $100,000 Facility Partnership Grant from 2014/2015 was approved by the local board last June 15. ■■ BMX toilet: $125,000 to the Mountain Raiders BMX Club for a toilet facility at Lloyd Elsmore Park to be owned by the club, including ongoing responsibility for maintenance and cleaning. Priorities for 2015/2016 are: ■■ Football: Discussions with Macleans College about the possibility of community access and use of the new artificial turf by Bucklands Beach AFC, 10 hours a week over 40 weeks of the year. ■■ Gymsports: A feasibility study and business case for a new purpose-built building at Lloyd Elsmore Park with possible inclusion of martial arts, cheerleading and aerobics. ■■ Netball: Investigate a joint venture with Pakuranga College to develop two indoor courts. If not feasible, then

spatially plan to cover two courts at Lloyd Elsmore Park. The council says discussion is needed with Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre about its preferred location for the investment. ■■ Softball/squash: A feasibility study and business case for offices and a squash court at Meadowland Park, if required. If the documents are not required, then preparation of design plans, quantity survey, consents and project management would start for the planning of offices and squash court. ■■ Waka Ama: A boat storage and wash down area at Tiraumea Drive Reserve. Boats will last longer if they are stored securely and would help the club get adequate insurance for boats and equipment. Recommended projects, 2015/20162017/2018: ■■ Tennis/Football: A joint Howick Tennis Club/Bucklands Beach AFC development at Howick Domain. This option is recommended if there is no support for a shared clubroom development at Macleans College. Bucklands Beach AFC has advised council staff that Howick Domain is not the club’s preferred location, rather it prefers to be based at Lloyd Elsmore Park. ■■ Tennis: Convert a bowling green at Morrow Avenue Reserve to two tennis courts. One of two greens at Morrow Avenue Reserve is rarely used by the Bucklands Beach Bowling Club. Bucklands Beach and Eastern Tennis Club have requested more courts. Further discussion is planned.

www.times.co.nz

More than meets the eye PLAYING football – or soccer as it is also widely known - is a great exercise for improving cardiovascular fitness and endurance. But that’s not all. This sport is incredibly beneficial in that it promotes bone health and muscle tone. The repeated impact helps strengthen bones, a significant advantage when you consider that bone density diminishes with age. Serious soccer players have very well developed muscles because

they’re all put to use by the various manoeuvres required during training sessions or matches. This sport is also great for morale and helps players relax and release stress. Your health is not the only thing that benefits from playing soccer. Besides the incomparable pleasure of playing (and winning), it also allows players to develop their motor skills. And what could be better than a team sport for learning to work as a team?

Come and try it out!

IT HAS been a mixed season for the Macleans Girls 1st XI. With nine players leaving school last year, it has been a rebuilding year. The girls managed to win some pre-season games to gain entry to compete for the first time in the Auckland Secondary Schools APC Premier 2 League. Coached by Simon Richards and managed by Miss Martinique Glass, the girls

have had some mixed results. The girls now go into the Auckland-based secondary schools tournament to be held at the Western Springs football grounds, Seddon Fields, from Monday, August 31, to Friday, September 4. They have high hopes for the gruelling five day tournament and a finish in the top eight would be a great result.

some time alone or with friends. Sports should be all about fun! It is important to integrate sports into young people’s daily routines because physical activity is beneficial for their health, wellbeing and academic success. In addition to improving many aspects of fitness (motor skills, coordination, flexibility, etc), sports have positive effects on wellbeing and mental health. Being physically active improves mood, self-esteem and one’s quality of sleep. It also reduces stress and symptoms of depression. Physical activity also helps children develop social networks, self-confidence, a sense of responsibility and perseverance. Furthermore, when it comes to a healthy lifestyle, athletes are inclined to be more careful about eating well in order to perform better. At school, physical activity increases attention span, concentration and memory. That is why the academic results of active students tend to be better than those of inactive students. In fact, a love of sports can become a motivation that reduces dropout rates. School sports also create a sense of community belonging and loyalty. There’s no doubt about it: playing sports is more than just keeping fit.

DO YOUR children spend too much time watching TV? Do you have trouble getting them to play outside when they get home from school? Here are some tips to help you encourage them to be physically active. Limiting the time spent in front of the TV or computer is a great start, but it isn’t enough. The best way to get your kids moving is to set an example, such as getting around by foot or bike whenever possible, and by being active yourself. You might also think about participating in some of their activities. For example, instead of telling them to go outside and go biking, suggest a family expedition; a group activity is much more appealing. To truly motivate children, help them find a sport they like. If they express a desire to try a new sport next year, don’t insist that they continue in the same sport they’ve been playing for the last two years. Let them make their own choices, but make it clear that they are to commit for the duration of the activity. Keep in mind the importance of keeping a healthy balance between planned activities and free time. Children will start to see sports as an extra chore in their schedule if homework, extracurricular activities and family plans don’t leave them

Greats celebrate Sir John Walker A SPECIAL breakfast attended by more than 500, labelled ‘The Power of Dreams Breakfast’, was held in Auckland last Wednesday, August 12, exactly 40 years to the day that John Walker became the first athlete to run the mile under three minutes and 50 seconds. Sir Peter Snell and Rod Dixon spoke to the gathering via a satellite link, and Lord Sebastian Coe came in on a video. On that day, August 12, 1975, in Gothenburg, Sweden, Walker ran the mile in 3:49.4, breaking Filbert Bayi’s world record of 3:51.0 set just three months earlier in Kingston Jamaica. Australians Ken Hall and Graham Crouch were next at 3:55.2 and 3:56.4, respectively. At the finish, Rod Dixon and journalist Ivan Agnew raced over to him and hugged him, with Agnew thrusting a stopwatch so close under Walker’s nose that he could not read it. Walker said that Agnew seemed demented, shouting over and over “you’re under 3:50, you’re under 3:50”. Walker said that he thought for one awful moment that Agnew and Dixon might try and kiss him. Walker’s world record stood for four years until Sebastian Coe ran 3:49.0 in Oslo in July 1979. Sir Peter Snell said it was an outstanding memorable performance. It was another legacy in the New Zealand mile along with people like Jack Lovelock, Murray Halberg, Rod

Dixon, Nick Willis and so on. Rod Dixon said that when he first saw John run, he knew that there was something very special that was going to change the course of running. Lord Sebastian Coe said that he remembered the race very clearly. “It was a formidable performance. I can remember putting my training kit on the following day, and it was with added frequency and fresh determination to try and emulate everything that Walker had done that night which was a massive inspiration to every athlete of my generation. I’m not sure we would have done it in the way that we did if we had not had Walker to chase and been our role model.” John Walker spoke on life: “If you don’t have a dream, you don’t have life. Everyone should dream something, but you’ve got to make it come true.”
