NEW Zealand’s greatest endurance athlete Cameron Brown has been appointed as an ambassador for Ironman in the Asia Pacific region. Brown, of Botany, has been the face of Ironman in New Zealand for more than a decade, and his success will be leveraged to promote the development of the multi sport. The 42-year-old’s a four-time podium finisher at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, is the only person to win the same Ironman event 10 times, and recently became the oldest person to win an Ironman race on the back of a two-hour, 44-minute marathon run at Cairns. He kicked off his ambassadorship with a third place in the Ironman 70.3 in the Philippines earlier this month, and he’ll also line up in 70.3 events in Malaysia next month and Taiwan in November. “For me it’s the perfect scenario, says Brown. “I’m racing well and still love this sport. “Ironman has been such a big part of my life and the opportunity to take on this role as ambassador for the Asia Pacific region is an honour. “I no longer want to be away from my family for long periods, so the expansion of Ironman and Ironman 70.3 races in Asia especially allows me to continue to compete and be based at home with my wife and two boys. “That was not really an option earlier in my career. When I was young it was very
hard financially to base yourself in Europe or America for long periods. “Now young athletes can base themselves at home and work their way into the sport by competing basically all-year round in Asia Pacific without such financial pressures, which can seriously affect their development. Brown spent much of his early career racing in Asia and is impressed with the rapid development of Ironman events in the region. “It seems people in Japan, Philippines, Malaysia and Korea just can’t get enough and races fill so quickly. “It’s going to be great to play a part in promoting the Ironman brand to everyone. Ironman Asia Pacific chief executive Geoff Meyer is thrilled to have Brown on board as an official ambassador. “Cameron is an absolute role model for our sport and brand. He has been the complete professional throughout his career and is still competing at the highest level. “We know he will be a real asset and someone that any Ironman competitor can learn from. As part of his ambassador role, Brown will conduct pre-race seminars with local athletes, give advice and nutritional information, host a special breakfast with training tips and race week activities, and play a lead role with government and key partners.

Old test adversaries face-to-face on stage TWO protagonists from the test rugby match dubbed The Game of the Century will relive the famous fixture later this month, ahead of their former teams taking the field. Former All Black Pita Alatini and his Wallaby counterpart Owen Finegan are the guest speakers at Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s annual Bledisloe Luncheon. The pair featured in the New Zealand v Australia Tri-Nations clash at Sydney’s Stadium Australia in 2000, which had everything a rugby fan could wish for in one match. The game was already a memorable one for Alatini, who was making his All Blacks debut at second-five after starring for the Highlanders in Super Rugby. “It’s a topic that everyone always asks me about, how that game went, says Alatini, Pakuranga’s director of rugby and premier head coach. “It was one of those games that will never be forgotten. It was right up there for me as one of the top games of my career. Alatini crossed for a try in a mesmerizing opening spell in which the All Blacks raced to 24-0 lead within 10 minutes. Then, in an amazing turnaround, the scores were level at 24-24 by halftime, as Australia, in front of a record rugby crowd of 109,874 people, surged back into the contest. Attendees at the luncheon will get to hear what the opposition thought of the test match, from one of the Wallabies’ all-time great enforcers. Finegan, a flanker or lock in 56 appearances for Australia, was a thorn

Gregan to Owen Finegan was a classic combination and hard to stop. “He was such a big man, had good pace and a lot of skill, so he was the complete player.
“He was a dominant force for the Brumbies and Wallabies through that era. “It’s always awesome to hear the other side of the story and how they felt about that game. The audience at the luncheon will be treated to what it was like to be in the middle of ‘that’ match, as well as behind-the-scenes anecdotes. “At the end of the game I could barely move, it took its toll, says Alatini. “Before you knew it, the 80 minutes were gone. “Most of the guys were completely silent. There was happiness that we had won [39-35], but we couldn’t celebrate because we were that buggered. With a Kiwi and Aussie on stage together at Pakuranga, there is bound to be plenty of banter, with varying degrees of truth. “I’m getting a bit nervous, says Alatini, laughing. “I’m pretty sure there’re not too many skeletons in there, but you never know. “I might have forgotten, but Owen might still have something in his little book. The Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s Bledisloe Luncheon is from 12.30pm on Friday, August 22, ahead of the All Blacks v Australia test match at Eden Park the following day. Corporate tables of 10 people cost $1200 and individual tickets are $120, with a two-course meal and most drinks included. New Zealand Rugby League chief executive Phil Holden, Fiona Kingsford of Competenz, and Lance Riesterer of The Skills Organisation, have agreed Photo supplied / Photosport to work together to train young players for off-pitch careers.
Got a trade? You got it made PROVIDING youngsters with a secure future is a goal that the New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL), The Skills Organisation and Competenz all share, so it’s logical that they join forces to deliver that message. The two industry training organisations have signed on as official sponsors of the NZRL Youth Elite development programme until the end of next year, and are also naming-rights partners of the NZRL National Youth Tournament, now powered by Got a Trade? Got it Made! “More and more, we are focusing on our young players’ future beyond the game of rugby
league,” says NZRL chief executive Phil Holden. “While a long and successful professional and international career is every player’s dream, the reality is that they can’t afford to rely on football for their future. “We recognise they need to make alternative plans, and The Skills Organisation and Competenz are ideal partners to help us drive this message. “It’s exciting to have these leading industry training organisations on board, as we begin to gather a strong group of partners around our joint NZRL Youth Elite programme.” The Skills Organisation has

Paying homage to world famous venues A PIECE of one of the most famous sports stadiums in the world has been recreated in Pakuranga. Andrew Marck, owner of The Fieldhouse indoor training facilities, has installed a life-size replica of part of the scoreboard from Boston’s Fenway Park, home of the 2013 World Series champions the Boston Red Sox, at his Pakuranga location. Fenway Park is the oldest baseball stadium in the United States, having opened in 1912. A unique and instantly recognisable part of the ground is the 11-metre high left-field wall nicknamed The Green Monster. Part of The Green Monster holds the Fenway Park scoreboard, which Marck commissioned an imitation of, to the exact size, for The Fieldhouse East, in Pakuranga. Marck took over The Fieldhouse West, in Avondale, earlier this year and added The Fieldhouse East, formerly The Batter’s Box, last month. The Fieldhouse West has features from the New York Yankees’ stadium, which means both sides of one of the oldest and fiercest rivalries in sport are represented at Marck’s premises. “The guy who set up The Fieldhouse West was a huge Yankees fan, so we have measurements on the wall of the home-run distance at Yankee Stadium,” says Marck. The 24-year-old was inspired to pay

Using right gear WHEN taking up a new sport, having the right equipment is crucial to ensuring you make progress and enjoy yourself. Whether it be rugby boots or a surfing wetsuit, making sure your gear fits properly is just as important. However, when people start to play golf they often ignore these two steps, much to their detriment. Sam Thomas, the head professional at Pakuranga Golf Club, has seen it all too often: the beginner golfer battling with a set of hand-me-down or off-the-rack clubs that haven’t been fitted and are not suited to their swing. “Often beginners go into a big retailer and buy a cheap set of sticks to get them under way,” says Thomas. “It’s a good way to start, but they won’t improve because those clubs aren’t necessarily right for them. “It can harm their results and affects them wanting to play.” Thomas says people are often put off getting fitted because they perceive it as an extra cost in an already expensive sport. “We do a lot of beginner fittings. Usually the beginner wants a cheaper package to start off with, and if someone comes in with a budget in mind we can usually work within that. “The fitting always starts with the cus-
tomer hitting their own clubs, if they have some. “If the current set is good for them after being compared to what we have in the studio, then they are better off spending money on lessons.” At Pakuranga’s high-performance studio, Thomas has installed the latest technology to provide a fitting experience unavailable anywhere else in New Zealand. One of the many tools he uses is a lie board to see where the club face makes contact with the ball, and where a club’s sole strikes the ground, allowing Thomas to make incremental adjustments until the right set-up is found. Having an incorrect lie angle will influence where the ball will travel and will result in many wayward hits. Another trap beginners fall into is spending all their time on the course, and not doing enough training on the practise range or on and around practise greens. “Get some coaching before your mistakes get too ingrained,” says Thomas. “If your bad habits start to get entrenched, it can be harder to get rid of them. “When you get someone new along to a sport, you want to make sure they like it and are getting good results. “I like helping beginners improve because they are the future of golf.”

Footwear is vitally important for runners of all ages and fitness levels, and for the surfaces they’re used on. Here, Zane Powell surges to the finish line for Pakuranga Athletic Club in cross-country. Photo supplied starting their next season’s training. The injury may have left some scar tissue, reduced range of movement, or caused muscle weakness that will greatly increase injury risk once training resumes. If you come to BodyFit for a check-up, we can assess your risk of any injury reoccurring, and help you to minimise that risk over the coming season. n Alex Blazhevskyiy is director/physiotherapist at BodyFit Physiotherapy Group, at Howick Recreation Centre, 563 Pakuranga Road; or CLM Fitness, 45C Mt Wellington Highway. MANY of you enjoy running as an effective way of keeping fit and healthy. However, running exposes you to a number of potential injuries, especially those involving the lower limbs. To help you stay moving and injury-free, here are four tips from the team at BodyFit Physiotherapy: n Increase slowly: Many people get excited by the start of a new active sports season. However, they get so impatient at their slow progress that they go from three months on the couch to attempting a marathon in four weeks. This is a recipe for disaster. Make sure you increase your running and training times by small increments only. A 5-10 per cent increase in either distance or time each week is plenty and will more likely keep you pain-free. One of the biggest predictors of injury in runners is rapidly increasing training volume – the more training you do, the greater the risk. It’s simple maths. n Check your shoes: Many people also get excited about starting a new training programme. However, they make the mistake of grabbing their favourite pair of sandshoes (also a favourite worn by roof tilers – not marathoners) and then wonder why they get foot, knee and leg pain two weeks into their programme. Make sure you get a good pair of running shoes before you start your training regime. Unfortunately for your bank balance, you do get what you pay for when it comes to running shoes. n Watch out for hills: Many new runners get injuries due to following a route that has too many hills in it. Hill running is a great training tool, but hills also place incredible demands on the joints of the lower body, and can accelerate injury risk in certain people. Try to stay on the flat for the first few months, and then add some hills in as your fitness improves. It’s better to be running on the flat than not running at all. n Get a check-up: I mentioned earlier that one of the biggest predictors of injury is training volume. The other biggest predictor is past injury history. At BodyFit, we’re amazed at the number of previously-injured people who do not have any treatment or assessment before

vessel overseas. So how does it work? Our experienced team will have a chat about your situation and what you’d like to achieve. We’ll also discuss things like are we training one person or are there other members of the crew who would benefit? Will we use your vessel or one of ours? Then we’ll put a plan together and match you with a suitable instructor. On the day your friendly instructor will go through things in a structured and a relaxed manner with a total focus on your small group and individual objectives. All our professional instructors are highly experienced and not only do they know their stuff, they know what you need to know AND how to teach it. Most are also active Search and Rescue volunteers. They won’t bore you with war stories but their local real world experience can add immense value and interest. Professional tuition is widely regarded as the norm for learning to fly an aircraft or drive a car. We believe we should now be adding boats to the list. To find out more about training options, give Coastguard a call on 0508 Rescue (737 283).

You don’t have to spend much time around a marina or a boat ramp to spot someone who could benefit greatly from some professional boat handling tuition. The key things to look out for are: • Crew desperately fending a heavy boat off fixed objects or other vessels • Engine revs increasing with every failed manoeuvring attempt • Crew trying to act as though everything is under control when their faces say otherwise • Raised voices, bad language and graunching fibreglass or timber are some other key indicators. It is hard to believe they’re there for enjoyment! Okay so traditionally Kiwis have learnt their boat handling skills from books, the school of hard (and sometimes expensive) knocks, a friend with a bit more experience or a combination of all three. Is there a better way? Coastguard believes there is. We can provide quality tuition for virtually any craft from a 3.5m trailer boat through to a large launch. We can deliver a tailored casual session covering specific areas of interest or a structured course that will provide an internationally recognised RYA qualification – very handy if you’re planning to hire a
