sion with Luxon he would withdraw from the race and back the Botany MP. Wellington-based National Party MP Nicola Willis will serve as deputy-leader, replacing Dr Shane Reti. Luxon says it’s a “tremendous privilege to lead our great party” and he thanks his colleagues for the confidence they’ve placed in him. “The unified National Party that Nicola and I lead will work every day to represent all New Zealanders, earn back their trust and confidence and deliver for them,” he says. “Now, more than ever, New Zealand needs the National Party to offer them hope, ambition and drive to meet the challenges of the com-
ing decade. We believe New Zealanders need a Government of action, not rhetoric. “I came to politics because I know how to solve problems and get things done. I have built a career out of reversing the fortunes of underperforming companies and I’ll bring that real-world experience to this role. “We are the new National Party that New Zealand needs.” Prior to entering politics, Luxon ran Air NZ for seven years. He and his wife Amanda have two children. Luxon was born in Christchurch and grew up in Howick. ➤ Turn to page 5

ince Labour first took power in 2017, the number of assaults on corrections officers by prisoners has nearly doubled, from 463 in the 2016/17 financial year to over 900 in the 2020/21 financial year. This is a disgrace and clearly shows that the Government is more invested in the criminals than in their victims or those whose job it is to keep them locked up. Corrections officers have one of the toughest jobs in the country and put themselves in harm’s way every day, something many of us could never do. It is the Government’s responsibility to ensure they are as safe as they can be and these statistics show that Labour is failing in their duty to our corrections staff. Sadly, this is not particularly surprising and is just one of dozens of statistical indicators that Labour’s soft-on-crime approach doesn’t work. Criminals are taking our justice system less seriously each day,

realising they can get away with more under this Government than they could before. Gang numbers are out of control and gang members are responsible for about three-quarters of the assaults reported above. I hear it regularly from our frontline police and corrections officers – they are feeling less supported and resourced than they have in a long time. I know you feel it too, with public surveys over the last couple of years reporting that New Zealanders are feeling less safe in their own communities and homes than they used to. Just this week we saw yet another tragic firearms incident

where police were shot at and forced to return fire, resulting in injuries to several officers. I am deeply worried that these types of incidents are on the rise. It is obvious by every measure that crime is worsening under Labour and the worst part is that it isn’t because of any specific policy or decision, but instead a complete lack of interest and total inaction by the Government. Our frontline officers in police and corrections do a fantastic job and continue to perform at a high level despite the often-limited support they get from their government. Something has to change. We need to get tougher on crime and do a whole lot more to ensure those responsible for keeping us safe have the tools they need to do so and, most importantly, are themselves kept safe.

The online album contains artwork that would have been featured in Ringa Toi, an annual exhibition showcasing student artwork with a focus on Toi Māori. The 2021 exhibition _ which was to have been held at Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington _ was cancelled due to Covid -19. The album features artwork from students working towards NCEA at Macleans College [Year 13 student Bobbi Passau’s artwork Exploring

he defendants charged over election donations to New Zealand’s two major political parties will now be tried together. A ruling by Auckland High Court Justice Ian Gault on November 29 granted an application by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) to combine two cases involving donations to the National Party and Labour Party in one single trial set down to take 10 weeks. The SFO laid charges against disgraced former Independent Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross and businessmen Yikun Zhang, Shijia Zheng, and Hengjia Zhen in January 2020 over two large donations made to the National Party. A donation of $100,000 was made in June 2017 and one of $100,050 in June 2018. The Crown alleges the two donations were split into smaller amounts so the identity of the donor or donors was not disclosed in the National Party’s annual return of party donations. Ross, Zhang, and Shijia Zheng each face two charges of obtaining by deception. Hengjia Zheng faces one charge of obtaining by deception and one charge of providing false or misleading information. The Crimes Act 1961 states the charge of obtaining by deception

carries a punishment of up to three years in prison. The four defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges in February 2020. The High Court initially set a trial date of September 6 this year but it was adjourned without explanation or comment from the SFO. A new trial date has since been set of July 25 next year. In May this year the SFO laid criminal charges against six people, all of whom have name suppression, in relation to election donations made to the Labour Party in 2017. The legal saga in the National Party case began in late 2018 during Ross’s falling out with and subsequent expulsion from the National Party. Then-National Party deputy leader Paula Bennett said at the time she’d raised issues with Ross about him
engaging in inappropriate behaviour as a “married Member of Parliament”. Ross accused then-party leader Simon Bridges of breaching the Electoral Act in relation to a large donation made to the party. Bridges denied any wrongdoing and said Ross was a “terrible person”. “He [Ross] defamed me and he is a liar,” Bridges said. Ross released recordings he had secretly made of his private phone conversations with Bridges, in which they discussed potential future National Party candidates. “Two Chinese would be more valuable than two Indians, I have to say,” Ross told Bridges. Ross was also accused at the time of leaking Bridges’ travel expenses to the news media. He denied the allegation, but an independent report by PricewaterhouseCoopers stated that while it did not identify the leaker of the expense documents with certainty, “the evidence we have identified points to Mr Ross”. Bridges said Ross should take the allegations he had publicly made over election donations to police, which he then did in October 2018. Police investigated the matter before handing it to the SFO in March 2019, with criminal charges being laid against Ross and the three businessmen in January 2020.

he Chorus cabinet at the Cook Street and Minerva Terrace intersection is to be repainted after it was hit by a vehicle. Telecommunications provider Chorus and the Beautification Trust teamed up to design eight cabinets in south Auckland to be painted by local artists. One mural cabinet, on the Cook Street roundabout, was originally painted by Tamara Kogler in 2017. The beautifully painted and bee-themed piece was focused on how food is grown and cycled back into the environment. Unfortunately, it was damaged by a vehicle in 2019, says Beautification Trust community manager Dawn Crispe. “One of the panels was damaged,” Crispe says. Crispe says it will be repainted, hopefully, over Christmas. The artist engaged in the repainting will be XiXi Lin. “She’s redoing the honeycomb shapes on the mural,” Crispe says. “She’s also going to be putting in little illustrations within each shape.” If any locals artists are interested in doing murals within their communities, Dawn Crispe can be contacted at dawn.crispe@beautification.org.nz

WI S HI N G YO U AL L A
Merry christmas S U P P O R T L OC AL W H EN SH OPPI N G TH IS CHRISTM AS CHRISTMAS APPEAL
Council supports City Mission’s Auckland Angels initiative A
uckland Council is throwing its support behind Auckland City Mission’s ‘Auckland Angels’ appeal, helping to ensure Aucklanders in greatest need can celebrate Christmas after a particularly tough year. Collection points for food and gift donations will be set up at the council’s service centres and libraries until Saturday December 11, between 9am and 4pm. Donations can also be dropped at the council’s pool and leisure centres once they reopen under the Covid-19 Protection ‘Red’ stage. Please do not leave donations outside. Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says some Aucklanders will be finding this Christmas season particularly
difficult after the extended Covid19 lockdown. “After a tough year with more than 100 days of lockdown in our
city, Aucklanders will be looking forward to spending Christmas with friends and loved ones,” he says.
“Unfortunately, for some in our communities, Christmas can cause additional strain and pressure on household finances, and this will only have been exacerbated by the lockdowns. We want every Aucklander to be able to celebrate this special time of year, which is why this Auckland City Mission initiative is so essential – and why we are proud to support it. “I encourage everyone who is in a position to do so to give what they can to ensure the year ends on a happier note for the families who have done it tough over the past four months.” Latest numbers from the Mission show that, along with their partners, they are giving out
more than 1600 parcels a week, up from around 450 per week pre-covid. Missioner Helen Robinson is expecting increased need this summer and says the mission is grateful for the council’s support. “Not only are more people struggling, but the lockdown means that the people who usually collect food and gifts to help haven’t been able to do that. “That’s why we so appreciate the support of organisations such as the council that not only help us to raise awareness of the campaign, but also put measures in place to enable Aucklanders to easily donate wherever they are in the region. ➤ Turn to page 10

Santa has sent more responses in Te Reo Māori than last year NZ Post has been working closely this Christmas with Santa and his elves to ensure Kiwi kids receive a response to their letters, and this year Santa has replied to more letters in Te Reo Māori than in 2020. “Once again, NZ Post is offering the magical connection of Writing to Santa and for Kiwi kids to receive a response in Te Reo Māori. This year, we’re proud to say that we have already sent more responses in Te Reo than in 2020 and we still have four weeks to go” says Sarah Sandoval, NZ Post general manager of consumer marketing and brand. Popular items on Kiwi kids’ wish lists were remote control cars, unicorns and books. While these were still high on the list for many, this year Santa also received some quirky requests, including pleas for llamas, for loved ones to be home for Christmas, for confidence head-

ing into a new school in 2022, and even baby siblings. NZ Post has also recently launched a new interactive website, where kids can send Santa an online letter – as well as having special access to Santa’s Ho Ho Homepage. “Over 40,000 kids visited Santa’s Ho Ho Homepage last year and read Santa’s emails, browsed holiday snaps and played games,” says Sarah. While the deadline has
passed to have physical postcard responses received in the mail from Santa, Kiwi kids can still send Santa an online message up until 5pm, Wednesday December 22 and will receive an email response. Email responses take 24 hours from when your online letter is sent, and you can choose to have your reply in Te Reo Māori or English. ➤ To make and send a digital postcard, visit www.nzpost. co.nz/writetosanta

The three golden rules for Christmas shopping this year C
hristmas might look a little different this year, particularly if you don’t plan ahead to make sure the gifts you want are under the tree come Christmas Eve. Over the last year, global supply chains have come under significant pressure. We’ve seen shortages pop up all over the world and it’s taking longer for things to get to New Zealand. When ships arrive in our waters they must contend with congestion at our major ports, which means they’re unable to unload when they need to or are continuing to other ports without stopping. And the ongoing industrial action in Australia is also having an impact. All of this means that there is a very real possibility that you might not have everything you want or need to celebrate the holi-
getting what they want in time for Christmas. They’re also planning to support local and are choosing to shop in store so that they can be certain that products are in stock and available now.
SHOP EARLY
days if you leave your shopping too late. The Warehouse reported a run-on wrapping paper in October and there has already been early demand for particular toys and tech. Accenture’s Manging Director Australia New Zealand Retail, Michelle Grujin, says that she expects our Christmas shopping
habits to follow what they’ve seen globally as part of Accenture’s annual holiday shopping research. “With pandemic shipping delays dominating headlines in 2021, we’re expecting Kiwis to shop differently this year. Our global research showed that people will be shopping earlier than normal because they are worried about not
Christmas is a little over three weeks away and if you were thinking that you still had plenty of time to get your presents sorted, then you should think again. The internal border around Auckland has increased shipping times. If you want to ship presents directly to friends or family, you need to put your order in as soon as possible. Don’t wait until the week before Christmas and still expect your parcel to arrive at the front door in time for the big day.
SHOP LOCAL
It’s likely that there may be gaps
on the shelves closer to Christmas that would normally be filled by speciality, imported products. This is the perfect year for Kiwi alternatives to take centre stage at your Christmas celebrations – you’ll make sure you don’t get caught out waiting for something to arrive that you need, and your money will go toward a Kiwi business owner who could do with a boost right now.
SHOP IN-STORE
While we have all grown accustomed to that familiar knock on the door that signals the arrival of our newest online purchase, this year will be the year to shop in store if you can. A present in your hand is worth more than a present in your online basket this year, and you won’t have to navigate the inevitable postal delays.

a former director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, now Professor of Energy and Climate Change at Manchester, we need to go onto a war footing. Dennis Horne, Howick
WE MUST REMEMBER THEM
In response to Barry Dreyer’s letter (Times, November 17) asking if Armistice Day or Remembrance Day has been forgotten in New Zealand, the official answer is ‘yes’. Apparently, during the 1950s, the November 11 commemoration for the many fallen soldiers since 1918 to the present day, which is practised across the world and in most Commonwealth countries, was dropped in New Zealand in favour of Anzac Day on April 25. I think it’s a shame we can’t have both days as Australia does. With more than 18,000 New Zealand Servicemen and women killed in WWI and nearly 12,000 in WWII, as well as many more in later wars, it is appropriate that we join in the global Remembrance Day on November 11. Family members in Australia inform us that, although not a public holiday, Remembrance Day is well observed in schools, churches and the government.
A mark of respect of 2 minutes’ silence is held across the nation, with the Last Post sounding out on radio, tv, shopping malls and street corners. The history of Remembrance Day is well documented on Wikipedia.
Helen Hammond, Pakuranga Park Village
GLOBAL WARMING THE BEGINNING OF THE END
Malcolm Hayward targets me for something I did not say, but of course he is entitled to go off halfcocked – as long as he doesn’t hit anyone. My comment was, “Let us pray Trump falls foul of a caring god...” But I would be quite happy to surrender judgment of anti-vaxxers and climate deniers to God too, providing God allows me my opinion, which Mr Hayward does not. SARS-CoV-2 will kill maybe 50 – 100 million, but manmade global warming is the beginning of the end of civilisation. According to Kevin Anderson,
IS IT A FOOTPATH OR WHEELPATH?
Now and then my wife and I are given a fright by sudden loud ringing of bike bells behind us when strolling on the footpath. By instinct, we leap to the left side of footpath, giving way to the energetic cyclist who flashes past like a gust of wind, leaving us behind, startled with our hearts beating faster from the sudden shock. That sort of unpleasant occurrence has happened to us many times. Dear cyclists, please be aware the route that strollers are walking on is footpath, not a wheelpath. It is common sense cyclists should give way to walkers on a footpath when coming across each other. The correct and decent approach is to refrain from ringing your loud bell suddenly from behind a walker’s back and quietly riding onto the grass strip alongside the footpath and riding back onto the footpath after passing walkers.
Are you with me? Everybody in our society is supposed to be kind, considerate and respectful to all the people around us. Your elegant and decent manner will make our beautiful living environment more harmonious and enjoyable.
Jabert Hou, Dannemora
WHERE, PRAY TELL, IS THAT BELL?
I remember as a wee nipper, scampering out from beneath the covers, up under the bright curtains and crouching at the edge of my bed, elbows on the sill, thrilling to the joyful chime coming through my window. Looking up into the boundless perfection of that flawless morning, the firmament was a gigantic deep blue crystal ringing in harmony with the little bell of that tiny Howick church the Fencibles had long ago built down the road. I don’t remember when life became such that its gleaming call to the faithful became a wakeful nuisance; an offence to sullen heathen. I missed the day when fell silent its weekly peel that crossed the village stillness of my childhood Sundays. I can’t say whence, hearts that once rang to their Saviour’s unction to love their neighbour as purely as rang that bell, did succumb to the deadening guile of television, consumerism, celebrity, media, politicians, public relations, science and the lie. Neither can I pinpoint the
Dream Season.
shameful hour hearts did fall to fear such that they now have learned to haughtily divide brothers and sisters into the vaxxed and unvaxxed: friend and foe. Was it at the ceasing of that bell?
Rees Sutcliffe, East Tamaki Heights
WE STAND STRONG WHEN WE’RE UNITED
The truth is everyone who has been vaccinated can still get infected with Covid. By the time they show symptoms, they have potentially infected everyone they had contact with. In turn, those people have potentially infected everyone they had contact with. Is vaccine really the solution? Is it worth tearing families, friends, and businesses apart? Does everyone have the right to be respected as equals? ‘It is self-evident that a community of healthy, economically stable and happy people can withstand the onslaught of a pandemic better than a group of sick and sad people. Successful communities achieve longer life expectancy and a lower all-cause mortality by pursuing healthier lifestyles together.’ (Dr Allen Weiss, CEO National Blue Zones Project). Would you feel empowered by reminding the government that our team of five million stands strong when we’re united? If so, please let your voice be heard.

ARTS
‘Biggest challenge yet’ By ZOE GARDEN
A
talented local artist is showcasing her latest works at an exhibition this weekend. Katie Blundell, 43, spent the winter in her Clevedon studio working on her newest project ‘Farm Girl’. She told the imes she was inspired by the tractor outside her studio window. “Heavy machinery is powerful, dominant and masculine,” Blundell says. “As a woman artist, to me these ideas seem both confrontational and inspiring.” This inspiration resulted in 29 different and creative pieces of art that will be shown at her gallery in Clevedon on December 4 and 5 from 10am-4pm. “I’d say I’m an abstract expressionist,” Blundell says. “I’m always speaking from my own personal experiences and heart. I find it really fascinating how that often links in with the collective, universal experiences of being human. It’s quite wonderful.” Blundell has always loved art. She enjoyed making signs in the orchard shop she worked at. Post high-school, where she continued to excel in art, Blundell completed a Bachelors and Masters of Fine Arts at Elam with printmaking being the focus of her Masters. She then trained as a teacher. “I

was art teacher at Onehunga High School and Diocesan School for Girls,” she says. “I taught for around 10 years.” Seven years ago Blundell moved to Clevedon to focus on her family and her art. She also, along with exhibitions and art projects, hosts art classes for children and adults. Her gallery and studio will be a part of the 2021 Clevedon Art Trail Open Studio Event on January 29-31. Blundell describes herself as a multi-media artist. Depending on the ideas, it will dictate which medium she uses for her artwork.
“Sometimes I make drawings or prints or sculptures,” Blundell says. Her art, she says, has evolved. “I think, when you look at art, it should have strong ideas and be technically strong too,” Blundell says. “I like to think I have a lot of interesting ideas. I also like to challenge myself.” In her project ‘Farm Girl’, Blundell faced her most difficult challenge yet. She painted and carved a tractor on a woodblock, then used her cousin’s large industrial roller to print as was it was too big for her mangle press. She worked on it for four months. The result was six limited edition pieces that will be featured in her exhibition this weekend. “I was inspired by noticing super large black and white prints on social media,” Blundell says. “A seed was planted and I wondered if I could pull off a super big reduction woodcut print.” Blundell is also a finalist in the 2021 Walker and Hall Waiheke Art Award. “It’s great to be a finalist,” she says. “I’m very excited.” On Auckland Anniversary Weekend, January 29-31, the Blundell family will hold the Riverhaven Artland Sculpture Park fundraiser for Franklin Hospice. The charity event will feature a tour through the park of more than 40 acres (16ha) with a growing collection of permanent works by New Zealand Sculptors, including Blundell herself.

Pest Free Howick cadetship kudos By ZOE GARDEN Pest Free Howick’s Ward cadetship programme has been recognised for its work and excellence in conservation. The cadetship was a nominated 2021 Mayoral Conservation Awards finalist in the Schools/Youth category on November 5. Its aim is to encourage young people to get involved and create pathways within Pest Free Howick Ward (PFHW) for learning, work experience and leadership opportunities, PFHW’s co-ordinator Lorelle Stranaghan says. Ethan McCormick, PFHW’s conservation assistant, successfully delivered the pilot in 2021 to Somerville Intermediate students, progressed through

He is now sharing this knowledge with the younger generations around the framework of the cadetship programme. Fellow finalists Aotea/Great Barrier Island schools marine project were declared the winners of the schools/youth category. “We were very happy to have made it through to the finals,” McCormick says. Pest Free Howick has recently welcomed two new conservation assistants to its team. “We hope to be able to offer the cadetship programme to more Howick ward schools in 2022,” Stranaghan says.

Multiple sclerosis does not define me: Stratton Multiple sclerosis is a disease of the brain and spinal cord in which the immune system eats away at the protective covering of the nerves. Local woman Gaye Stratton talks frankly about MS – and a new calendar raising funds for MS. By GAYE STRATTON
O
n an ordinary day just before Christmas 20 years ago, I was diagnosed with remitting relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS). I had two young daughters, a sixweek-old Dalmatian puppy (who did chew the ‘newly diagnosed with MS’ booklet) and ran my own human resources company. MS was clearly not detailed in my strategic plan. I knew nothing about MS or anyone with MS. Mr Google gave a timeframe of how long before I would need to use a wheelchair. It was a shocking revelation and a time of quite a few “Oh s… and
why me” moments. Despite the calming influence of Dr Ernie Willoughby who did a great job of explaining the different types of MS, a short time later I had a major relapse. I had very limited movement in my right arm and leg. I went on a course of steroids and my main worry about that was that I would get a round, steroidal-looking face. It was a time of turmoil and many unknowns. I remember during this relapse my younger daughter asked me to drive to the video store for her. I tried to explain I couldn’t even try. She responded with “can you maybe just try a bit harder”. That was when I did think that physically I might not to be
able to try harder, but I could try harder with my attitude to life with MS. Over the next 15 years I did have some smaller relapses but nothing too major. I stopped worrying that every strange feeling in my body was MS-related and I was going to have a relapse. Family life carried on along its busy track, my business grew, I focused on my fitness and ran a few half marathons. I didn’t forget about having MS but it wasn’t the first thing on my mind. Five years ago, the MS changed direction. I now have secondary progressive. Running isn’t on the agenda anymore and, like most women
