Schools prepared for students after lockdown By FARIDA MASTER

S

ome parents are apprehensive about children returning to school after the second round of Alert Level 3 lockdown. Steven Hargreaves, principal of Macleans College and president of the Auckland

Association Principals Association (ASSPA), says it is understandable that some parents are nervous about sending their children to school while there is still some Covid-19 community transmission. “A few parents have contacted us directly with this concern. We have been able to reassure them that school is safe,” he told

the Times. “Schools are well prepared for the return of students. Sanitiser is available, hygiene protocols are reinforced and all schools have support structures to help students who may be feeling anxious. “We have observed very few absences today (Monday). “Students are pleased to be back – to

urphys Road in Flat Bush has now reopened as a four-lane road following improvements. Auckland Transport (AT) transformed a section of the rural road, between Ormiston and Flat Bush roads, to one that can cope with the 15,600 vehicles using it each day. The project, which started in 2017, recognised Flat Bush as an area that will experience significant development in the coming years. This growth needed to be supported by building or improving arterial roads, bus routes, pedestrian and cycling connection, AT said.. The $29.5 million project was built by Fulton Hogan. Howick Local Board chair Adele White said she is thrilled to see Murphys Road open again. “It is looking great and certainly provides easy access to the many new developments in the area.” The work included building new walking and cycling facilities, to provide safe pedestrian access across

Seismic shift as teachers emerge from lockdown As children have headed back to school in Alert Level 2 Ian Dickinson, principal of Pigeon Mountain Primary writes about teachers having done an amazing job over the most recent, and previous lockdown.

T

wice, at really short notice (which was totally understandable for obvious reasons), teachers across New Zealand have faced a seismic shift in their core roles owing to lockdowns. It’s important to stress how adaptable teachers have needed to be during their time connecting to students who are no longer present in the classroom. I know our teachers have worked incredibly hard to reshape their programmes, as well as focusing more intently on student wellbeing and I’m sure those working in other schools have faced similar challenges and worked tirelessly to overcome them. In talking to parents and the community in recent months, it is evident that great teachers have mitigated some of the potentially harmful impacts of the isolation that

Ian Dickinson, principal Pigeon Mountain School says notions of schools ‘reopening’ are not altogether accurate. Photo supplied

lockdowns could lead to. Our school has done this by breaking our challenge into three parts – we’ve strived

to maintain not only learning, but routines too, as well as the connections that exist between our students, families and teachers. These conversations with parents have also reinforced one widely-overlooked function of schooling, the social element and the need for students to exercise their social and emotional learning in the physical presence of classmates. I’ve lost track of the number of stories related to me about children feeling lonely, or missing friends from school. It was great to return to school on Monday, with our students and teachers. However, notions of schools ‘reopening’ are not altogether accurate-our buildings may have been closed for the second time in 2020 because of Covid-19 but our schools have very much remained open throughout.

Level 2.5 – this is the new normal

We are now back at level 2.5 and we welcome the new normal. Our offices are now open and, like all businesses at this level, we will restrict the number of visitors at any one time. We look forward to supporting our local businesses, many of whom have adapted well to the new norm. Our walkers have been doing a wonderful job each week getting the papers to you despite the most dreadful weather through this lockdown. Well done to them. Last Tuesday was particularly bad and I well remember when my children did paper rounds – we, as parents on bad weather days, were there delivering as well. We have had lots of calls and emails thanking us for continuing to publish. Always nice to hear. Here are a couple we received last week. ➤ A good effort to get a newspaper out yesterday – and it reads well too. Schools prepared for students after lockdown

“Around 767 of the 898 students [85 per cent of all students] returned to school. “This is a more positive return to school than after the previous lockdown,” he says. He was pleased with the fact that parents were abiding by the school’s health and safety protocol of not entering the school site – to

keep staff and students safe. The principal of the biggest primary school in east Auckland, McIntyre says that there appears to be a better trust model and confidence in the school being a safe place. “Parents were more inclined to let their children be independent and let their children enter from the school gate.

“All people onsite are required to sanitise. Face masks are optional but a number of staff and students are wearing masks which is totally acceptable,” he says. “We are managing the school in a responsible yet practical way to maintain some form of social distancing and top hygienic practices to lessen the anxiety of students, staff and parents.”

URGENT CARE

A letter to parents earlier in the week stated: ‘No parental access will be allowed onsite in the afternoon unless you have an exemption. Please note that the following procedures around pickup vary from the previous Alert Level 2 procedures we had in place. We will be having a staggered afternoon release of students to avoid congestion’.

FATHER’S DAY

Dad makes a difference!

TRIBUTE

By REV DR RICHARD WAUGH

By FARIDA MASTER

M

y Dad nearly died many times. He served as a RAF pilot during World War II when longevity was rare. Later, not long before I was born, he was badly injured in a civil air accident when his aircraft iced up. When I was three-years-old he had two engine failures in single engine aircraft but successfully landed on rugged South Island beaches. When I was 10-years-old, he was nearly killed with a double engine failure and crash landing into the Shotover River at Queenstown, close to our home. When I was 15-yearsold, he again nearly died from peritonitis. Suddenly, when I was 27-years-old my Dad did die, while I was in my first year of church and community ministry. I still miss him these 35 years on. My Dad – Captain Brian Waugh – made a big impression on me, not only his flying adventures, but because he was a good man. He gave us children time with a special focus for each of us; for me it was especially about cars; for my sister music and my brother rugby. In his younger days my Dad was not especially spiritual; yet he supported my Mum and

came to church when he was able. Later in life he made a more deliberate commitment to God, thankful for God’s protection over his life, and became an intentional and growing disciple of Jesus Christ, never missing a Sunday in worship. I cherish the memory of his prayers at family meal times and encouragement at key times in my early life; when I first started work as a 17-yearold in the motor industry, commending my ministry call and meeting my wife-to-be. All those memories mean a great deal to me.

Peterson: ‘My wife was born to be a teacher’

If your Dad is alive; cherish him, warts and all, as our earthly existence can be surprisingly short and the precious relationship of Father to children – and grandchildren – is so important and doesn’t last forever. From my own experience with my Dad and my own parenting. I continue to learn much. Especially about regularly praying for my adult children – and first grandchild; spending quality time with them; trusting them and listening to them; and helping them develop a good sense of faith and identity. In my life I have found, when we are willing, that even in times of trouble and adversity God strengthens us and enables us to have greater compassion and care for one another. This Father’s Day: Dads – please cherish your children and family – lockdown time together is building some unique memories – make them good ones! Children – cherish your Dads (and Mums), pray for them and listen to their wisdom. It is an invaluable gift. ➤ Rev Dr Richard Waugh is a long-time Church leader in east Auckland, a former Howick Citizen-of-the-Year and absolutely committed to strong family life. He is also an Aviation Chaplain, historian, author and spokesperson for the Erebus National Memorial

Remembering the time she taught at Cockle Bay Primary, Mr Peterson says, “She had the reputation at the school for being the quietest teacher. She was very quiet and determined. Every child in the school appreciated her quality and responded to it. The children respected her a lot.” To acknowledge the contribution that Dawn and Kevin Peterson made at Cockle Bay School, a new school block containing six classrooms and a multipurpose area was named the Peterson Block. “We would have celebrated our 60 years of marriage in December this year. I am 10 years older than her and she knew she had married an old man.... she has been a wonderful wife for 59 years,” he says.

Thousands of students will sorely miss a much-loved teacher who impacted lives for more than 43 years. Dawn Peterson, 85, is wife of the much-respected educator Kevin Peterson. She passed away peacefully on August 25 at Middlemore Hospital. Mr Peterson describes his wife of 59 years as a very gentle, kind, considerate and sympathetic person. The 94-year-old Howick local says his wife Dawn succumbed to a recurring chest infection, Bronchiectasis. The former headmaster of Cockle Bay Primary takes pride in the fact that between his late wife and him, the two of them taught for a century. “I taught for 58 years and she for 43 and together we made it to 101,” he says. “My wife was a wonderful class teacher. I have to say that she was born to be a teacher!” he says. “She has been a good mother to my sons David, who is 58 now, and Andrew, 56, who is a lawyer; and a loving mother-in-law of Natasha and Laetitia. My older son David lives in Australia and, unfortunately, is not allowed by the government to be here for his mother’s funeral due to Covid-19 restrictions. “Both my sons ring their mother twice or thrice a week to find out how she is doing. “Dawn was hospitalised twice before, due to the chest infection. The infection affected her heart and they couldn’t kill the bug this time. She tried very hard to survive but in the end it got to her.”

IN AND AROUND

HOWICK

Age-old craft continues to inspire East Auckland Embroiderers Guild (EAEG) is an incorporated society and a member of the Association of New Zealand Embroiders Guild (ANZEG). It was formed in 2004 and has a current membership of 60, meeting twice each month – one day meeting and one evening meeting. ANZEG’s overall aim is to encourage embroidery in all its forms, innovation in design, and excellence in stitching. The members of EAEG fulfil this aim, being involved in a wide range of embroidery techniques ranging from very old traditional forms of stitching from around the world through to modern creations and multi-media projects. Workshops are often held at meetings to teach new skills, utilising both guild members and outside tutors. In addition to this, members can attend regional and national workshops run by both excellent local and international tutors – some with training such as the Royal School of Needlework.

Members are encouraged to try a diversity of embroidery techniques and to also create their own designs which then get transformed into a unique finished item. The resulting projects cover a vast range including stitched art for hanging, ornaments, cushions and table mats etc. These works of art are of an extremely high quality, with some members receiving recognition awards at regional and national exhibitions. EAEG has run an exhibition open to the public every two years since its inception and has been pleased to be able to share this age-old craft, keeping these traditional skills alive. It continues to inspire new and younger members in their pursuit of the age-old craft. And while the embroidery exhibition is hosted every two years unfortunately due to Covid-19 the exhibition this year has been put on hold until 2021. ➤ For any further information please contact Carol Dewe (President) 021 115 4534. Pub owners coming out of lockdown T

he year 2020 has been a complete write-off for many local businesses as they reel under the devastating impact of coronavirus. Talking about how hard they have been hit, Clive Thompson, owner of the Barrel Inn, says his business has been impacted 100 per cent since it’s been closed over these two lockdowns. “2020 has been a complete non-starter for us. The money is gone, it’s lost. We can’t make up for it,” says the Irish pub owner. “The wage subsidy that the government is paying only helps to pay wages to the staff but doesn’t pay your bills, the power, rent or overheads.” Thompson says that businesses need lots of money to ride this out, “or you are in dire straits”. “Now in Alert Level 2.5 we have to comply by the rules and have seated table service. There’s no bar service. It means having more staff and less revenue. “If you have a magic wand to make the business miraculously

CHILDHOOD ASTHMA One in seven children in NZ have asthma. Just under fifteen percent of children! Of these children three quarters have intermittent wheezing which means the child may wheeze for a few days but have no wheeze for at least 6 to 8 weeks between attacks. Five to ten percent of children have a more persistent wheeze and this group of asthmatic children need to be on an asthma preventor medication (these children have symptoms most days). All patients with asthma ideally need to work out what their triggers to having asthma are. Common ones include exposure to cigarette smoke, being allergic to dust mites, cats, pollens, grass, upper respiratory tract infections, exposure to cold air or mould, exercise or childhood stress. Having a symptom diary is often a useful way of working out what one’s triggers are. Avoiding the triggers can help. In winter we see a surge in presentation of children with asthma. Knowing what symptom signs to look for if the asthma is getting worse is vital for the family. An asthma action plan is a good way to guide care in the individual. The flu vaccine is available and recommended for patients with asthma especially if the child or adult is on a preventor medication for their asthma. Discussion with your GP first would be advisable. Some helpful websites for asthma allergies include: • www.asthmafoundation.org.nz • www.allergy.org.nz At Crawford Medical Centre the Doctors and nurses are keen to help diagnose, prevent and manage asthma.

Praveen Dahiya, manager of restaurant and rooftop bar Basalt, says that this year has been the most challenging one in Basalt’s 17 years in business. “Trading down at least 30 per cent on the previous year, not accounting for the nine weeks we have been closed to date with no trade to cover overheads. “Moving to Alert Level 2.5, we now have no choice but to get better at adapting to change,” he says. “When we closed in March, we immediately implemented new business strategies which covered all alert levels which we hope puts us in a better position as we go through this once again.” “We don’t think we can make up for the loss until we are back to pre-Covid trading conditions, which is heavily reliant on borders re-opening and tourism resuming.”

AN OPEN LETTER TO MR TARRANT

The effects of your actions have not only shocked and horrified the peoples of Aotearoa New Zealand, they have caused particular offence to Maori, the indigenous peoples of this land. Maori are the traditional kaitiaki or caretakers of this land just as Aboriginal peoples are to your homeland. Maori are entrusted the responsibility of ensuring all who come upon our land are accorded hospitality and freedom to flourish. Your actions were an indescribable abuse of the hospitality you were accorded. You will have seen, however, that Maori were prominent in responding with unequivocal love toward those you deliberately harmed. Indeed the immediate effect of your unconstrained hatred was that virtually all New Zealanders reached out across the humanlycreated divisions of race, religion, gender and class to provide comfort, kindness and solace by way of showing the world that our shared humanity is far more precious than the differences which you are clearly so unable to reconcile. Your actions have exponentially increased respect and desire for diversity, especially racial and religious diversity to continue to grow and to flourish in this country. Your stated desire for health, prosperity, autonomy, protection of heritage and culture, rights for workers and a discrimination-free

civil society are very much the objectives shared by the world’s recognised faith communities. It may not have occurred to you that these are many of the hopes of most, if not all, human beings. The faith of the people you attacked is no exception. Their faith provided workers’ rights, abstention from addictions, protection of culture and an elaborate framework for health and prosperity many hundreds of years ago. For many of those hundreds of years, these principles have benefitted Christian and other communities. Today, Christians and Muslims are involved in interfaith and interreligious cooperation, fighting against many things you say you hate, such as abuse of workers, addiction, ethnic oppression. When you said ‘Why won’t somebody do something?’, you simply were not aware of how much is being done already.

Brenton Tarrant, 29, on Thursday was sentenced to jail for the rest of his life without the prospect of release on 51 charges of murder, 40 of attempted murder and one charge of terrorism following the March 15, 2019, Christchurch mosque shootings. He admitted all the charges. Photo RNZ

Christianity and Islam are inseparably bound by their theological commonalities.. The Quran and Bible share remarkably similar stories, lessons and injunctions throughout their pages, using the same personalities, from Adam to Mary, and the miraculous birth of Jesus. Your actions, being so far from your stated goals, only put you in a well-known class of people distinguished by their exploitation of history and irrational misunderstanding of the world and its people – of how human beings were made by God to live, coexist, and thrive. Your inability to recognise the human race’s efforts to cooperate, collaborate and coexist across ethnic and religious lines is fortunately a relatively rare illness.

What is an essential service? In these days of Covid-19 virus, Doctors medical/health staff, police, fire, air ambulance, transportation drivers, Food outlets, Pharmacists, and admin people in all areas are certainly candidates. When we regard the human being as body, soul and spirit, I’m going to suggest that all three are essential. We cannot separate the physical from the mental or the supernatural parts of our makeup. That’s the way we our designed. Should our churches and places of worship be regarded as essential services? They should be because they provide the balance that our physical human condition demands. When this aspect of our lives is ignored, we get an increase in hopelessness and depression. There seems no point to life if it has no purpose. This is the very opposite to what the churches teach and stand for; where life itself is upheld as unique sacred and precious. So here we are recording an increase in mental disorders, selfharm and drug use. We also record an increase in violent crime with knives the most available weapon – guns having been confiscated. Are we in danger of having it said that we’ve put the ambulance at the foot of the cliff and ignored the balanced wellbeing of our citizens?

The Church, for all its failings, needs to fulfil its function and be seen as an essential service.

Ian George, Howick

END OF LIFE CHOICE ACT I refer to Henock Kloosterboer’s (Votesafe.nz ) comments in the Times (August 18). I have some difficulty in thinking like a lawyer, as suggested by Mr Kloosterboer, however I am conversant with the subject Act and found it very clear, non-confusing and with safeguards to prevent coercion and hasty decisions. Moreover, one must be deemed mentally competent to make a request for assisted dying. I therefore consider that, given the eligibility process of the Act, it could hardly be deemed unsafe. Having further regard to Henock’s comments, the question arises why eligible citizens, who are suffering and have six months or less to live, and have a different view from Votesafe.nz members, should be denied the opportunity to die with dignity, at a time and place of their choice, in accordance with the process outlined in the EOLC Act? In conclusion, EOLC provides a choice desired by many New Zealanders. A Yes vote in the referendum provides choice and compassion.

SCIENCE V SCIENCE

What an interesting time we are living in. One climate scientist believes in climate warming; another believes we are in a cooling period. The health specialists are telling us that to control Covid-19, we have to wait for a vaccine. Others are telling us Covid-19 can be controlled by using the drugs already available. Food growers use CO2 pumped into their greenhouses to promote abundant plant growth while others think CO2 is responsible for global warming. The economic experts again are divided. Some are expecting a return to normal next year; others say the economy will never be the same. One part of the energy sector is promoting electrical generation from hydro wind and solar. The other sector is promoting coal, oil and gas as the cheapest option for our worldwide transportation of goods and services. We all have to sift through wads of information to find answers. Just when we have answers, new information comes along and makes the previous search obsolete. The hunt begins again. There is only one I know that is the same yesterday today and tomorrow. Not only does He give stability in this chaotic world but gives us hope for a better life tomorrow.

BUS SCHEDULING INEFFICIENT Auckland Council gets $1976 million in rates from the ratepayers. Of this, $919m is allocated to Auckland Transport which earns $214m giving a nett loss of $705m. This means that $1410 of each ratepayers’ rates goes to subsidise this inefficient organisation. Now instead of running empty buses, if some scheduling was done, this loss could be reduced. More often than not I see buses on Pakuranga Road that have only the driver and sometimes one or two passengers and never more than six so it is obvious that they are not needed and especially not as frequently. I spoke to a driver who told me that had no passengers on his run. So we need less buses, less often, less supervisors and hopefully less rates .

Arthur Moore, Pakuranga

I have an article you published in November 1998, “2000km cycle tour amazes”. It may be of interest to old readers to say my wife Lyn is in care at Ryman village, Chapel Road, Howick, and I am a resident at the same village. We are both well cared for. I still cycle suburbia, at age 83, gently. We remain members of Auckland Cycle Touring Association, and Lyn and I have benefited much by this sport.

Richard Hopper, Howick

RESIDENTS SHOULD BE FAVOURED Arthur Moore (Times, August 25) wants to know when his rates have increased by more than the claimed average 3.5 per cent, whose rates increases have been less than that average figure? Part of the answer could be that the Council has a policy of tweaking rates to give an advantage to businesses and to the detriment of residential ratepayers. I don’t believe there should be any tweaking, but if there has to be, it should be in favour of residents, because, unlike businesses, they cannot claim rate payments as a tax deduction.

Henry Perkins, Botany Downs

DOES CANNABIS IMPACT SUICIDE RATE? There is little consolation in the Chief Coroner’s announcement that suicides declined by 5 per cent from 685 in 2019. Sadly, suicides will increase dramatically in the event that cannabis is legalised in NZ following the upcoming referendum; as witnessed in jurisdictions following similar cannabis ‘reforms’. Andrew Little’s Cabinet Paper, released on 7 May 2019, warns that cannabis increases the risk of depression, psychosis, schizophrenia and dependence, frequently pre-conditions to suicide. WHO data records the rate of suicide in Portugal increased 50 per cent within four years of decriminalising marijuana in 2001. That rate doubled from 7.4 to 14 per 100,000 up to 2018, a period of 17 years. The Rocky Mountain Drug Trafficking Intelligence Unit reports Colorado suicide incidents, in which marijuana tests were positive, over the seven years from when marijuana was legalised in 2013 increased from 14 per cent to 23 per cent. Disappointingly, the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor’s Expert Panel report on cannabis overlooked these dreadful real lessons following many years of legalised and decriminalised cannabis. Unless NZ votes ‘no’ at the cannabis referendum, expect a significant jump in our suicide rate.

uckland Council has filed six charges under the Resource Management Act against Formosa (NZ) Limited, with the company pleading guilty to all counts. In a written ruling, Environment Court Judge David Kirkpatrick has sentenced Formosa to pay $86,250. He said that while he does not think that the defendant or its principals intended to discharge waste to the creek, he did find that the problems with the system were not given priority. “Accordingly, the offending was extremely careless,” he said. Auckland Mayor Phil Goff said, “This pollution resulted from repeated acts of negligence and caused serious damage to Auckland’s natural environment. “The offender was made aware of the problems, but deliberately chose to ignore them. “Had they chosen to engage with the council

when asked, the problems could have been resolved and further action avoided but, given their indifference, a punitive fine is entirely appropriate. Formosa was operating a resort complex in Beachlands, which included accommodation, an 18-hole golf course and club facilities, a restaurant and fitness centre. After previous notices and warnings, council inspections in 2019 found that Formosa’s wastewater treatment system had been

neglected and was seriously malfunctioning, discharging untreated, or partially treated, wastewater directly into the environment. The discharge was having a detrimental effect on the land and on nearby Waikopua Creek. Local mana whenua, Ngai Tai Ki Tamaki, provided a Cultural Impact Assessment which describes the discharge as a direct insult to their mana. Formosa no longer owns the property. The waste system was fixed prior to the sale.

hat are the chances of dancing on the same stage as superstars JLo and Shakira at a Super Bowl halftime show? Howick’s Shyvon Campbell had to pinch herself when she found herself on stage in front of 62,000 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, as part of Super Bowl LIV (54), reportedly the most viewed live event in the world. With so much adrenalin pumping, the closing ceremony was nothing less than spectacular, she says. And the NFL estimated the 2020 Super Bowl reached more than 100 million people worldwide. “Being from New Zealand I didn’t realise how big the Super Bowl is. It’s as if the whole of America stops to see it,” says the former Macleans College student who now lives in Los Angeles. Shyvon says another unforgettable moment was working with Rihanna for the Savage X Fenty lingerie show in September 2019. The runaway show featured a bevy of supermodels including Gigi and sister Bella Hadid and Cara Delevingne, as well as celebrities like actress Laverne Cox and singer

Shyvon Campbell had to pinch herself when she found herself on stage with JLo and Shakira in front of 62,000 people in Florida, also pictured in a show with Rihanna and Justin Bieber’s Sorry music video with Parris Goebel.

Normani; and performances by Halsey, DJ Khaleed and Migos. “It was the most overwhelming and scariest moment of my life,” she says about the precision of dance moves choreographed by the internationally known Kiwi queen of ‘Polyswagg’, Parris Goebel. “Rihanna is my favourite,” says Shyvon. “Her energy, aura, vibe is so natural. It is so cool to be around her,” she says about the Grammyaward winning singer, songwriter whose crew she was a part of at the Video Music Awards in 2016. “At that time I was in New Zealand and part of Parris Goebel’s Palace Dance Studio crew,” she says.

Shyvon, who was just five years old when she was introduced to dancing at Nicola Wheelers Dance Academy, gives due credit to Parris. “The Palace taught me very good work ethic. “I joined the company The Palace Dance Studio lead by Parris Goebel in 2011. I was in the first batch that competed at the HHI – World Hip Hop Dance Champs in USA winning two gold medals in my first year. Since then we have won four gold and two silver in total.” Shyvon’s first international job was as a part of the dance crew for JLo at the American Music Awards 2015. It was the same year Justin Bieber released Sorry, also choreographed by Parris. “It was a big year for me,” she says. Shyvon says she decided to come home from Los Angeles due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Now she can’t wait to get back to the world of glitz and glamour as the international stage beckons. “I am blessed as I get to do what I love on such a large platform and encourage those passionate enough to chase their wildest dreams no matter how large.” ➤ Watch the Super Bowl Halftime Show www.youtube. com/watch?v=pILCn6VO_RU

HISTORY

The tapu on Howick! As Howick and districts count down to the 175th anniversary, the Times continues its series by Alan La Roche giving readers a glimpse of life as it used to be. The countdown began at the 170th in 2017

T

here used to be a tapu (a forbidden area) on Howick that was created by Maori of Umupuia in the early years of European settlement. It was to prevent Maori trading or working in Howick and to stop them becoming infected with diseases such as influenza, measles, scarlet fever or chickenpox that had minor effects on European immigrants but could kill Maori who had no immunity. Maori willingly generally sold fruit, vegetables or pork to early settlers and willingly helped the new immigrants of Howick build their cottages. The tapu was not strictly enforced as there were Maori in all school classes and in church congregations. There were no racial conflicts but warm friendships. Miss E. M. Nixon (born 1870, died in 1962) dedicated her home, museum and garden “to the people of Howick” and encouraged a better understanding between settlers and Maori by researching their histories. Maori of New Zealand had negotiated a “treaty of coop-

ANNIVERSARY

eration” and, after the Treaty of Waitangi, Maori followed the principles of the treaty. The Government dishonoured these agreements. The “Fairburn Block” was the land missionary William Fairburn was asked to look after by a group of iwi (tribes) including Hauraki and Waikato to prevent inter-tribal warfare in 1836. All the land from the Tamaki River to the Wairoa River, Manukau Harbour to the Waitemata, (82,947 acres) “was to be left for Europeans only”. Maori were told to move onto a Maori reserve of 6000 acres at Umupuia, near Maraetai Beach. After the Treaty was signed, the Government took this land without payment. They subdivided it and sold it, to help pay for the Fencible immigration

Miss Nixon’s whare, where the tapu was lifted in October 1936. Photo supplied

scheme and development of roads and bridges. This was Maori land and they should have been paid for it. To demand that Maori living in Howick, Pakuranga or Whitford had to live at Umupuia was not following the Treaty of Waitangi. It was racial discrimination. There was a Maori family living by the stream at the end of Fisher Parade below Manor Park estate in 1900. Another group was also living in the Mangemangeroa. Maori used to help farmers especially, harvesting wheat, oats or hay. But as farms became more productive and mechanised, Maori families were forced to move on. Miss Nixon could see the unfair treatment of Maori. She had bought a section in

Uxbridge Road in 1925 and built a whare whakairo (a carved Maori house), a Pataka (food storage building) and a model Fencible’s cottage as part of her folk museum. In October 1936 she ceremoniously opened her garden with members of the Akarana Maori Association and Queen Victoria Girls College to witness the removal of the tapu on Howick. This was done by Maunui Kahiwera and Miss Ngeungeu Beamish (a descendant of Torere, a Ngai Tai ancestor) with members of Ngaitai. They were thanked by Archdeacon Hawkins of All Saints Church Howick, followed by waiata (songs) and dancing. There is no tapu on Howick today. Recently Ngai Tai Maori received a Treaty of Waitangi Settlement as part payment compensation for the misdeeds of our former governments. Alan La Roche, Howick Historian

COMMUNITY

Two lucky women win $5000 each from Botany Michelle Bailey says she was gobsmacked when she got a call from Botany Town Centre saying she had just won $5000 as part of their Spend and Win campaign. “I was having a coffee with my husband at home when I received the call from Botany Town Centre. I thought, oh my gosh, I’ve won! I then did a happy dance around the kitchen,” says the Cockle Bay resident. This month, Botany Town Centre has given Michelle Bailey and Shana Johnson $5000 each as part of their recent ‘Spend and Win’ campaign. Bailey says the money means an awful lot especially in the times we are facing. “It brings great happiness and a big sense of solace. When Auckland comes out of lockdown, we can go to the Botany Town Centre restaurants and book in a nice family dinner – a few treats and park some away for Christmas. The other lucky winner Shana Johnson says she feels incredibly grateful, “I thought it is a joke. The gift came at the best time, with growing children and renovations at home, it means we can get the things we need. “I will be spending the money on household things. I think this is such a wonderful and generous incentive. I know I’m certainly attracted to shop in a place with such awesome rewards” says Johnson. Kerrie Hughes, centre manager at Botany Town Centre, says, “At Botany, we are always looking for ways to give back to our community. We have received incredible support from our local shoppers, and this is just one way for us to give back to them.” To go into the draw to win one of two $5000 Botany Town Centre Gift Cards, shoppers who spend $100 or more at any store and present their receipts to any retailer or the Customer Services Desk.

Warriors all about guts T

he old adage “less haste, more speed” should apply to the decision of the NRL Warriors top brass to appoint Nathan Brown as head coach on a three-year deal starting from 2021. Describing Stephen Kearney’s harsh sacking in June “like a death in the family,” interim coach Todd Payton admitted the Warriors were “not tough enough for long enough”. That has changed dramatically in the last five games when they’ve won four of five games, the only loss being a brave one, 12-18 to NRL premier leaders, the Penrith Panthers. Wins include 26-20 West Tigers, 26-22 Manly Sea Eagles, 20-14 Canterbury Bulldogs and last Saturday, best of all, a 36-6 walloping of the Newcastle Knights. The bloke who has turned the Warriors around from a bunch of losers into a gutsy team whose defence has tightened and their attack sharpened, is interim coach Payton. This despite losing several homesick players who returned home to New Zealand to be with their families. Among those were champion

wings Ken Maumalo and David Fusitu’a. Nor did it help that they sacked experienced halfback Craig Green, probably the worst decision they’ve made since getting rid of the sometimes brilliant, sometimes brittle Sean Johnson who didn’t always back his attacking genius by kicking too deep too much. Interestingly, however, the new halves combination of Chanel Harris-Tavita and Kodi Nikorima is starting to gel nicely behind a hardworking pack of forwards who are not scared of hard graft. Harris-Tavita had a blinder against the Knights, as did fullback and skipper Roger Tuivasa-Sheck who scored a splendid double. On loan players have also done their bit with Jack Hetherington, who missed the Newcastle game because of suspension, a tough, strong-running prop who takes no prisoners. He’s one player definitely worth signing for 2021. Wings George Jennings and Adam Pompey have also been good value who have profited from some smart offloads from centre Peter Hiku. Meanwhile the players would

ing that of Casey Kopua and Maria Folau after last year’s World Cup means the Silver Ferns have lost their three Old Fossils. But what wonderful memories they have left behind. All three are netballing greats with the lively Langman a positive never-say-die leader. As champion centres go, she may not have had the natural athleticism of Sandra Edge but she compensated with her dedication, fitness and enthusiasm. Replacing her as captain is popular Pulse goal shoot Ameliaranne Ekenasio whose accuracy at the World Cup was on par with that of the brilliant Folau. With goal attack Maddy Gordon being promoted to the Ferns, competition between her, Gina Crampton, Shannon Saunders Claire Kersten and Kimiora Poi for midfield berths will be keen. With Bailey Mes and Te Paea Selby-Rickit retained as shooters along with Ekenasio and Maia Wilson, outstanding youngsters Aliyah Dunn and Grace Nweke have made the development squad. ➤ Ivan Agnew is an awardwinning sports writer and author
