he Howick Historical Village has won a $500,000 grant. Marin Burgess, the president of the Howick & Districts Historical Society, told the Times the first payment of $250,000 has been received and if the society meets the expected targets they have set around sustainability, diversity and maintenance and environmental, two further payments are due – $125,000 in February 2021 and $125,000 in August 2021. “We were one of the fortunate few who attracted the Strategic Tourism Asset Protection Programme (STAPP ) funds recently and have been awarded the grant payable over a two-year period,” said Burgess. “In the face of a future with no tourists, the surety these funds and the recognition of our value as a tourism provider gave the Historical Village the necessary impetus to re-open which we did – very quietly – five weeks ago. “We must also acknowledge the support of the Howick Local Board who have been engaged and understanding of our plight. We have mostly new staff and took the opportunity to ensure we had all systems in place. “The future over the next few years is still extremely tense however we have been welcomed

by the locals who picked up on social media we had re-opened and came to visit our living history museum.” The schools programme is also up and running. “While closed we have not been idle – there is a new shop front and the heritage gardens at the moment are a treat to behold. The Village is a gem we hope will endure well into future,” said Burgess. “We are also very aware of the 175th anniversary [of the Howick and surrounding districts] coming up [in 2022] which has to be a major opportunity for the village and the district as a whole – so we’re optimistic.” Krissy Perrett, Howick Historical Village manager, said four objectives have been chosen to adhere to for the STAPP funding. ➤ Sustainability of infrastructure: Any maintenance of infrastructure or facilities uses sustainable construction and design methods to protect or restore the natural and cultural surroundings. ➤ Reducing our solid waste: A waste mitigation, reduction and management plan is developed and the business is actively measuring and monitoring against it. ➤ Diversity: Commitment to improving workforce diversity and or equity.

very few customers.” Libraries across the city are funded for standard hours and until now, the board has funded extended time at its libraries. Howick Local Board Chair Adele White says the board supported the recommendation to reduce hours as part of its annual work programme discussions with libraries. “We are really lucky to have four fantastic libraries in our area and this just standardises hours to

reflect when people are using them. “All library lovers can be assured that the same services and programmes offered today will continue and we are also delighted our valued library teams are not affected, “she says. Hours at the Botany Library are not changing as it is located within the Botany Town Centre which requires tenants to be open for certain hours so the board will continue to fund those hours.

Citizens Advice Bureau has initiated a petition to address digital exclusion. This campaign builds on the findings and recommendations of our report, ‘Face to Face with digital exclusion’. You can sign the petition at a CAB near you or visit our.actionstation.org.nz We are asking the community to pledge their commitment to the following:  1. Leave no-one behind: ensure that steps are taken to address digital exclusion and that no-one is left behind or left out because they can’t or don’t wish to engage online.   2. Public services accessible to all: implement accessibility and inclusion standards for the delivery of public services that include offline channels as part of the proactive design of government service delivery.  3. CAB compensated for cost-shifting: ensure that the Citizens Advice Bureau is properly funded to meet the demands and cost-shifting that has resulted from government services going online. This is really important because the digital-only or digital-first approach being embraced by government agencies is excluding some of Aotearoa’s most vulnerable people and communities. This is unacceptable. We want to see people’s needs put at the centre of public services and

TRANSPORT

History in the making with H & E’s first electric bus By FARIDA MASTER

I

t was a historic moment as the first, three-axle electric bus was launched at the Howick Historical Village. The choice of venue was interesting as the fist motorized bus was introduced in Howick area over 100 years ago! The one-of-its-kind, E13 threeaxle, extra-large bus geared to reduce the carbon footprint, will be on loan to operator, Howick & Eastern (H&E) and will be used on its routes from east Auckland to central city. At an event attended by Sheryll Otway, general manager H & E Buses; Wei Zhou, director JW Group that works in conjunction with Yutong (one of the largest bus manufacturers in the world); as well as Howick Local Board members Adele White, David Collings and Bruce Kendall, Auckland Transport’s manager of Bus Services, Darek Koper, said that Auckland Transport (AT) has launched its latest electric bus, as the next step towards reducing the city’s carbon emissions. The Yutong E13 is Auckland’s first electric ‘extra-large’ bus, which can carry 78 passengers and is designed specifically to meet New Zealand standards, can run over 400km at a single charge. “Trialling this bus on longer distance routes from east Auckland into the city centre will help us compare operational performance, power demand and costs alongside equivalent existing diesel buses and hydrogen fuel cell buses being manufactured for AT. This validates our case studies showing much lower impact from three-axle electric buses on road pavements, compared to standard e-buses.” Otway said that they are excited about having the first electric bus in the area on a six-month trial basis. “In 1906 we launched the first motorised bus to complement our horse drawn carriages and now 114 years later, in partnership with Auckland Transport and JW Diesel, we are again changing the way our

passengers travel. This is history in the making.” “Electric buses are a game-changer and we’re excited to support Auckland Transport’s vision for a full zero emission bus fleet by 2040. We can’t wait for our customers to get on board and experience the E13 for themselves and we look forward to the feedback of drivers and passengers.” Jo Crickett from JW Group said it has been a challenging year navigating Covid restrictions and disruptions but is now thrilled that the first E13 three-axle bus creating history in Australasia is launched. Director of JW Group, Wei Zhou said that during 2018 and 2019, a large two-axle EV bus was trialled by AT in partnership with Yutong. “During this testing, operators in Auckland have shown real world range exceeding 400km a day on a single charge. This builds

operational confidence in electric bus fleets to manage the rigorous demands of public transport right now.” JW Group is also bringing nine new electric buses for the AirportLink service, to be launched in January next year.

yman Healthcare has been voted the top operator in the retirement village sector in the Aged Advisor People’s Choice Awards for 2020. AgedAdvisor (www. agedadvisor.co.nz) provides a reviews and listings service similar to TripAdvisor, and has attracted almost 6000 independent reviews since it was set up five years ago. It is the third year in a row that Ryman Healthcare has been named Best Group Provider (nationwide) in the awards, and Ryman’s Margaret Stoddart Retirement Village in Christchurch was named Best Small Retirement or Lifestyle Village in the South Island for 2020. Ryman’s Diana Isaac, Ernest Rutherford and Charles Upham villages were also finalists in the best medium/large category in the South Island. And Kiri Te Kanawa, Bert Sutcliffe and Linda Jones villages were finalists in the best medium/large category in the North Island. In total Ryman accounted for eight of the 36 awards and finalist spots.

Fun times at the Bruce Mclaren Retirement Village in Howick, one of Ryman Healthcare’s very popular villages. Photo Aged Advisor

Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod said the award success was down to the commitment of the Ryman team of 6000. “The significant thing about these awards is that they are the result of honest opinions from people who have taken the time to review us based on their personal experience,’’ Gordon says. “It is the third year in a row that we have taken the top prize and that indicates that we are consistently doing the right thing – and that is entirely down to the hard work and high standards of our teams.’’ Overall, Ryman villages

have a 92 per cent positive rating from more than 880 reviewers. Aged Advisor’s ratings are based on almost 6000 in-depth reviews with ratings on seven key categories ranging from the care of staff through to entertainment and food. Covid-19 lockdowns delayed collection of reviews by three months this year. In addition to the AgedAdvisor recognition, Ryman Healthcare has also been named the Readers’ Digest Most Trusted Brand in the aged care and retirement sector in New Zealand six times.

New Cabinet focused on NZ’s Covid-19 recovery E

xperienced Ministers will hold key economic recovery and ongoing Covid response portfolios in the new Cabinet lineup announced by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern yesterday. “The next three years will be very challenging for New Zealand. With the global outlook worsening, we won’t be immune to the ongoing impact Covid is having around the world,” Ardern said in a media release. “With this in mind, the new Labour Government will have two overarching priorities: to drive our economic recovery from Covid19, and to continue our health response to keep New Zealanders safe from the virus. “In what will be a difficult environment, it’s critical we have our most experienced Ministers leading the ongoing Covid response to keep New Zealanders safe from the virus and to accelerate our plan for economic recovery. Grant Robertson will become Deputy Prime Minister, Finance Minister and Infrastructure Minister “drawing together the key portfolios central to that economic recovery”. “Our recovery plan includes $42

in the last term,” Ardern said. “I am excited by this team. They bring experience from the ground, and from within politics. But they also represent renewal and reflect the New Zealand we live in today. “We know we have a big job ahead of us, but the skills, experience and commitment this team brings to the task is invaluable.”

FREEMASONS

Masons mark major milestone By CHRIS HARROWELL

T

he leader of New Zealand’s Freemasons was on hand to help the Howick Masonic Lodge and its members mark a significant milestone. Grand Master Graham Wrigley travelled from his Christchurch home to the lodge in Highland Park Drive to attend its 75th anniversary celebrations on October 28. The occasion drew more than 100 Freemasons from across the Auckland region. Wrigley is only the third grand master to visit the east Auckland lodge in its history. “You get significant milestones in Freemasonry and 75 years is a very good record to achieve,” he told the Times. “It prepares you for the next 25 years when they will have their centenary, which is the next big affair. “It’s very doubtful any of the founding members are still here, but newer members feel some ownership that the lodge has achieved this milestone and it is acknowledged.” Freemasonry describes itself as a “brotherhood of good men meeting and working in harmony, teaching strong moral and ethical values in personal, family and community behaviour and a code of caring for others”. The organisation has been in existence internationally for hun-

dreds of years. New Zealand’s first lodge was formed in 1842. Wrigley says the celebration on October 28 was to include the unveiling of a plaque acknowledging the 75th anniversary, a talk on the lodge’s history, and a report on its activities and charitable projects. Several Freemasons were also scheduled to be promoted to higher ranks and the night was to end

with a shared meal. Wrigley says people often enquire about the “secrets” of Freemasonry. He takes it as an opportunity to discuss the organisation’s many charitable and philanthropic works. “We fund the Centre for Brain Research at the University of Auckland which does major research into Parkinson’s and

Huntington’s diseases. “We fund cancer research at the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research [in Wellington] and we fund child health fellowships at Otago University. “We’re very strong in philanthropic activities in this area and have done a lot of projects supporting the community. We do that under the radar.” Freemasons take part in rituals, which they are sworn to keep secret, behind closed doors at their lodge, Wrigley says, but it’s not involved in conspiracies, despite what Hollywood may depict. “The integrity of the Freemason is to take an obligation to obey the laws of the country. “They are there to uphold the laws of the land and the loyalty that goes with it. “The secrets tell other Freemasons what level you are in Masonry.” Wrigley says he became a Freemason as both his father,

grandfather, and uncles were also. “I took the view that if it is good enough for them then it’s got to be good enough [for me], so I came into the craft that way.” He’s got a lot out of belonging to the organisation over the years. “It’s the fraternal brotherhood and friendship you get when you meet like-minded people. “Freemasons don’t engage in politics or religion so you’re on neutral ground. “We have great respect for someone else who is a Freemason.” Howick Masonic Lodge Master Kerry Otto says with more than 200 lodges around New Zealand, it’s a “rare thing” to have a visit from the Grand Master, especially as Wrigley lives in the South Island. “This was his first visit to Auckland so it attracts a lot of attention amongst the Masonic community. Lodge Howick was in the spotlight and I think we showed what a strong lodge we are, even after 75 years.”

50 years marked for freemason

Freemason Ted Collett – of Masonic Lodge 55 Wairoa based at Highland Park - has been presented with a 50-year badge. It was resented by Mike Wyse, past District Grand Master, Auckland East District. Collett comes from a fam-

ily of Freemasonry. He joined on August 17, 197o at 23 years of age and has been an active member moving though the ranks and becoming a Master of the Lodge in 1985. “We are always interested in attracting new membership and,

if you are interested, e meet on the third Monday of the month,” Collett said. “There are daytime and evening meetings. Lodge room phone number is 535 4654.”

BEACHLANDS MARAETAI WHITFORD CLEVEDON

Ranked top garden of international significance Ayrlies Garden and Wetlands (ayrlies.co.nz) near Whitford is an iconic New Zealand garden yet locally is the best kept secret. It is better known outside New Zealand, thanks to thousands of overseas visitors flowing from a BBC documentary on the world’s best gardens. A letter from Lizzie in wintry Europe captures the experience: ‘It’s half past nine in the morning here in Northern France, a grey miserable day, and I have just watched a programme on the TV. It’s Monty Don and he’s visiting different gardens around the world. Wow, wow, wow what a truly wonderful garden, it’s a pity the programme wasn’t just

about yours. Thank you for being on the TV and allowing others to see the wonders of your planting.’ Over 55 years old, Ayrlies Garden overwhelms with its scale and intensity of plantings. An outstanding range of native and exotic plant species are effortlessly woven over a rolling landscape (some steep) linked by paths, large ponds and waterfalls. The gardenTHE has grown to cover six hectares, along with extended native valleys, and a further 20 hectares of restored wetland, a wildlife sanctuary to native and visiting birds. Currently there are six Spoonbills residing on the jetty. It has earned a reputation

among horticulturalists and gardening enthusiasts as one of the finest examples of gardening excellence. One of its charms is that rather than seeming commercial, Ayrlies retains the inspiration of its creator, Beverley McConnell that it is muchneeded ‘food for the soul’. A visionary plantswoman and landscaper, Ayrlies is ranked a top garden of international significance by the NZ Gardens Trust. To visit or to simply relax and be re-energised by the spirit of this unique place, check visitor details at ayrlies.co.nz Louisiana Iris (pictured) is a highlight of the early November garden followed closely by the roses.

COUNCIL

Goff: We’re in strong position of recovery A

uckland Council Group on Friday published its 2019/2020 Annual Report on the Auckland Council website. It reported 2019/2020 was the second year of the 10-year Budget 2018-2028, which pledged a $26 billion programme of capital investment to ensure infrastructure development keeps pace with demand. The group invested a record $2.6b in the city’s assets including $1.1b in transport infrastructure and $748 million in water infrastructure. Mayor Phil Goff said, “Auckland Council’s prudent and responsible approach to financial management over the past financial year has ensured that we are in a strong position to recover from the Covid-19 crisis. While this and the worst-ever drought in our region has put pressure on our finances, we will continue to deliver the essential services Aucklanders rely on and invest in the future of our region. “Our continuing investment in important transport projects such as the City Rail Link, the Eastern Busway and the Puhinui Station Interchange will help to reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions, while making it faster and more convenient to travel around our region. “We are continuing our work to substantially reduce wastewater overflows and improve water quality in our beaches, harbours and streams, with construction of the $1.2b Central Interceptor now underway and infrastructure work to reduce wastewater overflows to beaches in progress. “We are protecting our

natural environment and native species and have progressed development of our Climate Action Plan, which was adopted in July 2020. “We will continue to make important investments in our region to support Auckland and New Zealand’s recovery from the Covid-19 crisis through infrastructure-driven stimulus. This will also create a legacy for future generations and ensure that we deliver on our vision to create a city that is vibrant, inclusive and successful.” Finance and Performance Committee chair Desley Simpson said, “Reducing costs, including by controlling discretionary expenditure and removing duplication, has helped achieve $23m in savings for Aucklanders. “While our prudent fiscal management has ensured that we are well-placed to steer a course to recovery from the COVID-19 crisis and the drought, in the face of strong headwinds we will need continue to find economies and become a leaner, more agile organisation.” Auckland Council chief executive Jim Stabback said the results of the last financial year, and the measures the council has taken to address the financial impacts of Covid-19 through the Emergency Budget, has set the organisation up to manage the challenges ahead. “While we are progressing with our plans to become a more efficient organisation, we remain committed to ensuring our work programmes are targeted at the things that matter the most to the future growth and success of Auckland and its people,” he said. The group ended the

2019/2020 financial year with an operating surplus before gains and losses of $752m, reflecting the fact that the Covid-19 pandemic and the drought impacted council in the fourth quarter of the year. This positions the council strongly to respond to these crises, which are expected to pose a $690m challenge in the 2020/2021 financial year. Borrowing for capital investment increased by $1.3b as the council continued to ramp up delivery of much-needed infrastructure assets for the city. To facilitate this significant investment, the council has continued to take a prudent approach to managing debt and finances, keeping its net debt to revenue ratio under our policy limit of 270 per cent. This is reflected in credit ratings that were reaffirmed at AA from S&P Global Ratings and Aa2 from Moody’s Investors Services on September 28 and April 28, 2020 respectively. Both outlooks remain “stable”. Because of the ongoing financial challenges from the Covid-19 pandemic and the drought, Auckland Council expects its net debt to revenue ratio to increase to no higher than 290 per cent in the shortterm. “Council is committed to bringing this back to prudent and sustainable levels as soon as possible,” Stabback said. ➤ To find out more about the overview, service performance, local board performance, financial results and the group’s response to climate risks and opportunities, refer to the Auckland Council Annual Report 2019/2020 and the Auckland Council Summary Annual Report 2019/2020 available on aucklandcouncil.govt.nz.

Fitness and wellbeing activities in Botany from 4pm-5 pm, to yoga classes lead by experts every Sunday (free yoga lead by Nalin from 10am-11am and Yoga by Liz from 11am-12noon $2 per session) at the Botany Library – there is a lineup of talks and workshops in the offing. Starting off the Happy and Healthy Community talk was organiser of Howick Santa Parade, Bo Burns. An enterprising business woman and Howick Local Board member, Burns reached out to local ethnic leaders to encourage them to participate in Howick’s popular Santa Parade, making it a

more inclusive and diverse event. Young says that the Tai Chi classes hosted by the Botany and Flat Bush Ethnic Association have been so popular that the next 10 sessions have been fully booked and has a waiting list for a new class, since trainer Eleanor Mak from Hong Kong takes only 25 students per class. On Sunday, November 8, Diana Nicholson, Advanced Care Programme Lead, and Nivedita Sharma Vij, lead clinical head coach at Counties Manukau Health, will discuss Advanced Care Planning (ACP) at Botany Library,

11am. ACP involves thinking about what is important to you as you age, or develop a serious condition/situation – enduring power of attorney and advance directives, an opportunity to start your won ACP including your goals, values and preferences. Muskaan Care Trust NZ and Botany & Flat Bush Ethnic Association will help the audience identify things that matter the most. All are welcome. Conversations by experts on a variety of subjects at the Botany Library every week include deal-

ing with scammers, summer wellbeing; tips on maintaining healthy homes; a Chinese Tea introduction and the art of flower arrangement. Kiwi windsurfing legend, double Olympian Bruce Kendall, will also be sharing interesting nuggets of his life. Kendall’s talk will focus on his early success in water sport on Sunday, December 6. Madison Chang of Drowning Prevention Auckland will also round-up the session with tips on water safety and prevention of drowning through education and advocacy.

HANG ON A MINUTE

Marilyn Green asks why the government would deliberately create a health problem by legalising cannabis, and surmises it “needs the huge tax take”. On the contrary, the government has realised making criminals out of Kiwis for using a relatively harmless - compared with alcohol - drug has not reduced its widespread use, and offered society the opportunity to follow the nearunanimous advice of experts. I voted accordingly. Who knows, I might even try it. If it’s any good, I’ll let Marilyn know. We all need to relax and listen, instead of moralising and defending our personal prejudices. Then we might find a path to a future that does not include destroying the planet.

FINLAND NOT NIRVANA

Gary Hollis suggests that we should look to Finland as it claims the title of ‘happiest country on earth’ (Times October 20). With a suicide rate 30 per cent above that of New Zealand’s (Finland 15.9/100k vs NZ at 12.1/100k - Source: WHO 2018), how could Gary propose such an aspiration? We are often seduced by the temptation to selectively curate data in support of an ideology.

OUR KINGFISHER

All winter long we have enjoyed the company of our kingfisher. He would come early morning before the sun had reached the trees and perch on the bare branches of the fig tree. He would sit there very still then suddenly swoop on the lawn pick up a morsel and zoom back up to the high branches of the gleditsia. The cream-coloured breast shone out like a beacon against the darkened background. Then he’d flip turn and reveal the magnificent aqua blue feathers in the emerging sunlight. A sheer delight to any heart, a glimpse of the creator’s handiwork. Spring is here, the leaves have occupied the perch and our precious bird has gone. We feel a bit empty; the early morning search from the living room windows is habit now. But we know he’s gone. Gone to find new territory. Perhaps he’ll be back next winter.

While I applaud Hillary Barrie’s reply to Laura Ingram (Fox News), ‘the egg’, I wish she hadn’t. My concern is that increasingly we are responding to, and adopting, American political themes, themes inaccurately and deliberately misapplied to the NZ situation e.g. ‘slavery’. “Our slavery” was an institution ingrained long before colonialism and over decades the emancipation of Maori and Pakeha ensued due to enlightened policies and against local custom. Obviously different from America. In the US we see an embroilment of race, gender and culture - these frictions exist in the minority in NZ. We have made progress faster than the US - our country is smaller; our differences are smaller. We already have national and cohesive resolution policies in place e.g. the Treaty Tribunal. Some people adopt these American ideas and they want things to move “at pace, for their reasons” as if we were in an American proxy. Are US politics grafted onto the NZ situation really benefiting NZ? Are they better than the policies we have natively instituted? I don’t think so. Social action motivated by Americanised (or other) ideas, need not be ours. We should resist cultural hegemony and stay our own course. When the US election concludes - either way - don’t take to the streets or be keyboard warriors we, and Hillary, should not respond but rather reflect on the future of Aotearoa, because she deserves a

A reader suggests we look at POTUS and “his remarkable achievements for the US economy”.

TRUMP HAS DONE SO MUCH Where has the integrity of the journalists and cartoonists of our main paper gone? Sound judgment has gone out the door and been replaced with sloganeering, slick phrases and, of course, toeing the paymasters paradigm to keep the pay-packet flowing. This is so noticeable when reporting anything on President Donald Trump. The left wing media hate him. The Democrats hate him. Yet just look at his remarkable achievements for the US economy Abraham peace accords and standing up to Chinese expansionism, avoiding war by severe sanctions and draining the swamp of corruption. But we read nothing of these successes. The issue we are seeing here is liberals ideology verses conservatives ideology. The liberals own the media and

call themselves ‘progressive’. There is nothing progressive about them but plenty to do with socialism and moral decadence. The conservatives are more biblically guided and look past the present to the future and recognise that the moral decay in our culture aligns with our removal of the Bible from our public discourse, from our education, our sports fields, our universities, our judiciary, our legislative chambers and our businesses. Just look at history and teach its lesson - nations that uphold biblical virtues prosper. Those that do not, eventually succumb to wars, lawlessness, tyrants, injustice and bankruptcy. It is so plain to see.

‘DEVELOPMENT DOESN’T BELONG HERE’

RE: Atrocious Suggestion for Sandspit Road Development namely ‘Quarterdeck’ I’m writing in response to the one-page ad that the proposed developers of the above had printed in the October 13, Times. Nothing whatsoever about their ‘scaling back’ appeals in any way to anyone living in this vicinity including their terms of ‘helping to meet council goals in housing shortage’! The whole aim is based on greed, without a doubt, but it is ludicrous even to be considered in such an area. Apart from the main problem with (ancient) infrastructure as it stands at the present time; the overcrowding at any major school

opening/closing times or events at the already established two schools site is already more than enough. Apart from the disturbance that the proposed building site would bring about, it will be a future traffic hazard, not only to children but anyone in that area. The Council should never ever have accepted their proposal for consideration a second time around. We’re hoping someone uses common sense in this instance and the development goes elsewhere, certainly not between two over-filled schools!

Robert and Pamela French Very concerned long-standing residents Cockle Bay

RESPONSE TO REFERENDUM RESULTS We are proud of the work done by so many in highlighting the risks of the End of Life Choice Act. We are disappointed and saddened at the passing of a law which will compromise the ability of doctors and other health care professionals to show undivided care, kindness and compassion to those approaching the end of their lives. The lack of safeguards remains of great concern to us, particularly for people who already feel a burden to others. We also call upon the Government to fully fund palliative and hospice services so that intentionally ending the lives of some people in vulnerable circumstances becomes unnecessary.

BOOKARAMA 2020

Well the Rotary Club of Howick’s Bookarama is over for another year. To the community, a great big thank you for supporting our club’s major fundraising event. How amazing it was with huge numbers of quality books, games, puzzles, CDs, DVDs and LPs donated over several months and purchased on our sale days 13-18 October. This year’s event was by far the most successful in the 20 years we have been running Bookarama. The generous support of Somerville Intermediate School has been hugely appreciated as this has most certainly been our best and biggest venue yet. The funds raised have been especially pleasing and will allow us to support many areas of need in our community. If you would like to know more about Rotary or want to help with Bookarama next year, please send your contact details and we will be in touch Thank you from the Rotary Club of Howick. ART

New mural: Lisa’s dream comes true Rescare resident and art enthusiast Lisa Friedrich has always dreamed of painting a mural, but was not sure where to start. Arts Out East teamed up with Lisa to help make her dream a reality, right in the heart of Flatbush. Local mural artist Olive Breach joined the project to become Lisa’s mentor and to offer hands-on help, and Resene sponsored the project with a donation of paint. Over the period of one week during September, the team recreated an abstract painting of Lisa’s in the Flatbush Rescare site. The colourful mural is installed on a large wall at the residence

reception and welcomes all who visit. Lisa is elated at the result, “this feels like my dream has come true”, she says about creating her very first, large-scale mural. Arts Out East works with local artists to deliver communityfocussed projects and events. It is a Te Tuhi programme, funded by Howick Local Board.

Aladdin Jr works its magic N

ever has the saying ‘the show must go on’ resonated more than for the Elim Christian College production of Disney’s Aladdin Jr theatre musical adapted from the 1992 Walt Disney Animation Studios film Aladdin. After being forced to reschedule due to Auckland’s second lockdown just days before the opening night, it seemed that the school might never have the chance to make it to the stage, says production director Graeme Foster. “Despite all of the setbacks 2020 has thrown at us, Elim Christian

College students showed their true character in persevering all the way through to closing night.” The Hawkin’s Theatre was packed for a final performance as the audience took a magical ride through the streets of the fabled city of Agrabah through dazzling dances, set design and musical numbers. “The responses from attendees have been phenomenal - ‘the best Elim show yet’. “‘The [students] were fantastic. So hilarious.’ We could not have made it such a memorable night without the staff and the students,” he says.

OPINION

RESULTS

Mo’unga and Barrett are both champions I

t’s time to stop the debate as to whether Richie Mo’unga or Beauden Barrett is the All Blacks best first-five and acknowledge we are lucky to have two such talented players. On Saturday night in Sydney, Mo’unga’s tactical kicking in the wet was sublime when he also scored two snappy tries and managed 23 of his team’s points in their record 43-5 Bledisloe Cup win against Australia. Fullback Barrett contributed to one of those tries with a deft chip kick that Mo’unga regathered smartly. As former first-fives themselves, selectors Ian Foster and Grant Fox know a thing or two about what constitutes a champion No 10. And while Beauden is making a good fist of fullback, it was equally versatile brother Jordie who scored a stunning long range try from the same position when moved from the right wing late in the game. Six tries to one emphasied the All Blacks superiority upon winning their last two games after drawing the first against the Wallabies and giving Ian Foster crowing rights over Dave Rennie who unsuccessfully gambled on youth ahead of experience.

Richie Mo’unga, left, and Beauden Barrett and equally All Blacks best first-five. Photos supplied

In centre Jordan Petaia he has a beauty who beat Jack Goodhue, Mo’unga and Beauden Barrett in one scything run leading to Australia’s sole try. Strong in scrum and lineout and with a vastly superior rolling maul, the All Blacks dominated where it counted and allowed Mo’unga to dictate proceedings. Led by Caleb Clarke’s stunning test start at Eden Park, several new All Blacks have made impressive debuts in this series, emphasising the depth of talent available. Hopefully Will Jordon and Cullen Grace will get their chance in Brisbane on Saturday night.

Hoskins Sotutu didn’t reach his high Super Rugby standards but did a nice peel off the scrum to set up Rieko Ioane’s try. He looks to have a bright future and the selectors would also have been pleased with Shannon Frizzel’s development. Meanwhile goal shoot Maia Wilson has done a fantastic job in replacing the retired seemingly irreplaceable Maria Folau in the Silver Ferns. With a personal record equalling 44 goals from 47 attempts for a 94 per cent average, the unflappable Wilson was magnificent in the Ferns latest 62-47 win against brave England at Claudelands Stadium.

PREMIER MEN

Agnew’s Angle She combined sweetly with goal attack and captain Ameliaranne Ekenasio once again and the swift and accurate feeding of replacement midcourters Claire Kersten and Witney Sourness allowed the home team to pull away to a flattering win against a team that was forced to leave several of their best in Australia. Despite this, England’s shooters were also outstanding and it was also satisfying to see Jane Watson and Kelly Jury enjoy their best games of the series for New Zealand. Having survived a horrendous crash in the penultimate round of the season in Mantova when her handlebars bent, Courtney Duncan came back to score her fifth win of the world motocross championship on Sunday and finish third in her final race to retain her title. It was a thrilling finish by the courageous Kiwi who finished level on points with Nancy Van De Ven but took the title on a tiebreak by scoring the most wins. Rally drivers will be ready for Battle of Jacks Ridge By CHRIS HARROWELL

B

ragging rights within the Hawkeswood family will be on the line when some of the country’s top motorsport stars descend on rural east Auckland. The high-profile Repco Battle of Jacks Ridge rally competition is being hosted at Andrew Hawkeswood’s family property in Whitford on November 15. It will feature drivers including current New Zealand rally champion Ben Hunt, Hayden Paddon, Shane van Gisbergen, Greg Murphy, and Joe McAndrew, among others. Hawkeswood, a former national rally champion, is also taking part, as is his son Jack, for whom the property and event are named. The event will see competitors blast around a purpose-built gravel road at the property that features high speed jumps, sharp corners and close proximity to spectators. Andrew Hawkeswood plans to

take on the circuit behind the wheel of his Mazda 2 rally car, powered by a turbocharged 1800cc engine putting out about 310 horsepower. The track was initially designed to be used during the 2020 World

Rally Championship Rally New Zealand but the event was cancelled in May due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He says the event will be extremely competitive for the driv-

ers and exciting for spectators. “None of these guys like to get beaten, me especially. They’ll be putting everything on the line. “These rally sprints are a big pressure cooker to better yourself on every run.” Hawkeswood is no stranger to motorsport success within New Zealand and overseas. He’s the 2017 national rally champion, a former New Zealand hill climb champion, the runnerup in the 2019 Asia-Pacific Rally Championship and has competed at the famous Pikes Peak hill climb in the United States. He had a “five to eight year plan” to develop the rally circuit, but when the opportunity came up to host an event this year, he put his foot down. “The five-to-eight year plan turned into a five month plan. “Between December and March we did some pretty serious work in excess of 100-hour weeks for months.” Rival drivers may think his son

Jack Hawkeswood has a home track advantage, but he’s yet to do a full lap. “I’ll do a few laps of it so we can make sure the track is going to work alright,” Jack Hawkeswood says. “I don’t think I have too much of an advantage over anyone else.” Greg Murphy says he “can’t wait to get out and have a go”. “The road is just amazing. I am in awe of what the Hawkeswood team have managed to do. “I think our country is incredibly fortunate to have it and have a huge amount of fun and give the fans something to really enjoy.” Andrew Hawkeswood says he’s expecting the rally will draw a large crowd as many other motorsport events were impacted by Covid-19. “Everything else has been cancelled as far as motorsport goes. This is shaping up to be the biggest spectator event of the year.” ➤ The Battle of Jacks Ridge starts at 10am on November 15.
