ast Auckland residents will soon have the chance to share their views on the design of the latest stage of a major infrastructure project. Auckland Transport (AT) says the next phase of the Eastern Busway to be constructed runs from Pakuranga to Botany and has a budget of $867 million. Additional funding has been assigned to prioritise the project’s delivery. The busway is part of the region’s rapid transport network and will create separate lanes for buses to connect commuters from Botany, Pakuranga and surrounding suburbs with the rail network in Panmure.

It includes cycling and walking paths, safety, environment and roading improvements, and the Reeves Road flyover. Consultation with property owners and the community will soon begin on the current design of the busway from Pakuranga to Botany and will continue in early 2022. Feedback will help the project team better understand the “local context, the needs of the diverse and growing east Auckland population and the impact of the proposed changes”, AT says. Meanwhile, the Panmure to Pakuranga section of the busway is almost complete, with its opening planned for mid-December 2021. ➤ Turn to page 3

P
roud Howickian Keith Marwood Boles, one of the few remaining New Zealanders who served in RAF Bomber Command in World War II, has died. His family said he passed away peacefully on October 24, three months short of his 101st birthday. Daughter Sue Popping said Boles welcomed his newest great-grandson just before his death. “We are so sad to lose such a wonderful father who was an inspirational leader of our family,” Popping said. “He was also such a courageous, dignified and respected man, a Howick identity and revered by his old and new air-force friends and all who knew him. He will be dearly missed. “I was able to tell my father of the birth of his newest great-grandson just four days before he died, so we are looking at Dad’s passing as a time to celebrate two lives over 100 years apart. “The whole family sincerely thank all the staff at Ambridge Rose Manor in Pakuranga for the amazing care they gave to Dad during his time there.”

ber of the Pathfinders Association and The New Zealand Bomber Command Association where he served a period as vice president. Boles and his late wife Margaret moved to Howick in 1958, first residing in Kelsey’s Fencible Cottage while building their forever home in Mellons Bay. Their son and two daughters grew up in idyllic surroundings and all attended Mellons Bay School where Boles, as a founding parent, pitched in with parent-led work including helping build the school’s swimming pool. A mechanical engineer, Boles worked until his mid-80s, running his own light engineering business. Boles was a regular shopper, driving his white Holden Commodore through Howick and parking in the disabled spaces to run his errands. “His car boasted personalised plates reflecting his beloved RAF 109 Squadron in which he served during the war as squadron leader,” said Popping. “Keith was a much-loved figure in the Howick businesses and banks he frequented and was missed after his necessary move to a rest home. ➤ Turn to page 3

They located and marked targets with flares, which a main bomber force would aim at, increasing the accuracy of the bombing missions. Flying De Havilland Mosquitos, Boles – from Mellons Bay – was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). His citation read: “Acting Squadron Leader Boles as Pilot, has completed numerous operations against the enemy, in the course of which he has invariably shown the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty”. About 6000 young New Zealanders served in RAF Bomber Command in WWII. Of these, around 2000 did not return, almost one in three. Almost half of all the aircrew who served in Bomber Command, nearly 56,000, were killed. At the time of his birthday last year, there were fewer than 20 known surviving Bomber Command veterans in New Zealand and the New Zealand Bomber Command Association is aware of just five surviving pilots. ‘He’s flying his Mosquito again’ ➤ From page 2 “Commemorating Anzac Days on Stockade Hill were one of the highlights of his year and he only missed a few due to his reduced mobility.” His death notice reads: “Much loved husband of the late Margaret Boles and companion of the late Sheila Austin. Cherished father of Peter, Sue and Sally and father-in-law of Lynda, Andries and David. Adored Grandfather of Sarah, Alex, Emma, and Jeremy and their partners Alex, Tayla, Tim and Cara. Loving Great Grandfather
(GGPa) of Chloe, Frieda, Ted, Isla and Sadie. Former Vice-President of the New Zealand Bomber Command Assn. He is flying his Mosquito again. Keith will be dearly missed by all those who were part of his incredible life. Given the current settings, a private cremation will be held. When allowed, a memorial service will be held for our wonderful Dad, Father-in-law, Grandpa, GGPa, friend and highly-esteemed war veteran. Our sincere thanks to the loving staff and Dr Wong of Ambridge Rose Manor.”
Auckland mayor Phil Goff says the busway’s benefits will be “wide-ranging”. “As well as enabling people to get around more quickly via public transport, it will increase access to jobs and education, attract investment and growth and enable urban development. “The Eastern Busway project will also help address traffic congestion and reduce carbon emissions helping us to achieve our climate change goals and contributing to improved air quality in our region.” AT says the busway’s Panmure to Pakuranga section is almost complete with its opening planned for mid-December. When the entire project is finished it will provide 7km of free-flowing busway from the Panmure train station to Botany, AT chief executive Shane Ellison says. “This ‘turn-up-and-go’ rapid transport service along with safe, separated walking and cycling routes, will make it easier to connect with the wider Auckland region and enable people to get to school, work and the shops.”
Once completed, the Eastern Busway project will provide 7km of freeflowing bus travel from the Panmure train station to Botany. Times photo Wayne Martin
More than 10km of protected cycleways and footpaths will run alongside the busway. Parts of Ti Rakau Drive will be widened to make space for the busway and five bus stations. The station designs include parking for scooters and bikes and green roofs that will collect solar energy and rainwater. “We’re working together with mana whenua so when the new bus lanes are built we’ll restore and enhance the landscape with more trees, planting and rain gardens that capture and reuse storm water,” Ellison says. Site investigation work is taking place to help planners understand the ground conditions and locations of underground services including water, electricity and gas pipes.
The information being gathered is critical to support development of the design, AT says. Construction is expected to start in 2022 and to be completed in 2026 subject to consent approvals and the easing of current pandemic restrictions. The announcement the project is back on track is “welcome news for east Auckland”, Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown and Botany MP Christopher Luxon say. “The Eastern Busway and Reeves Road flyover have been talked about for too long and the time now is for action. “We’ll be working closely with AT to ensure this project fits the needs of people in east Auckland and ensuring everyone has their say in the final design phase.”

Save your backyard birdsong I
f you are running out of activities to keep the kids busy during this lockdown, Pest Free Howick Ward (PFHW) might have some ideas for you. The team at PFHW is encouraging locals to get involved with backyard trapping over the spring and upcoming summer season. It’s a risky business for our native birds to move about the region but there is a plan to make it safer, and you can help with it. PFHW coordinator Lorelle Stranaghan shares some tips to get started. “Take a look around your garden - do you have a citrus tree with the rind nibbled off the fruit? Chances are this could be a rat enjoying a midnight feast. “There are traps available to borrow if you want to get started. We also provide guidance on using the traps. “A lot of locals are already practising backyard trapping, and we can see their work paying off as we

Vaccine mandates on the way By CHRIS HARROWELL
A
uckland Mayor Phil Goff says the Government’s decision to require at-risk businesses to ensure their staff are vaccinated against Covid-19 is a practical step. The move will help keep the community safe as the city begins to open up under the new Covid19 protection framework, he says. “Under the ‘red’ setting, businesses such as bars, cafes, restaurants and gyms will be able to open for up to 100 people only if all customers have vaccination certificates, so it makes sense to require staff to also be vaccinated. “This provides certainty for these businesses which have been seeking clarity on this matter, will help ensure staff are safe at work and will give Aucklanders confidence to shop, dine out and enjoy all the things that make our city such a great place to live.” Goff says the requirement will effectively mandate vaccination for about 40 per cent of Auckland’s workforce. That will help to increase the vaccine’s uptake as the Government aims to reach 90 per cent of the eligible population getting their second dose. “A highly vaccinated population is the key to keeping people safe and will allow us to further reopen

our community and return to life with fewer restrictions on businesses, gatherings and events,” Goff says. “To those who are not yet vaccinated, I urge you to get it done now. “It will protect your family,
friends and loved ones from the virus and will ensure we can all move to a lower level of restrictions in time to enjoy festivals, concerts, sports and other events this summer.” The Government announced on October 26 that it plans to intro-

duce measures to “help protect workplaces and workers from Covid-19”. Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Michael Wood said vaccination will be required for all workers where customers need to show Covid-19 vaccination cer-
tificates, such as hospitality and close-contact businesses. The new law will introduce a clearer and simplified risk-assessment process for employers to follow when deciding whether they can require vaccination for different types of work, he says. Non-vaccinated workers in roles requiring vaccination will be given a new four-week notice period to get vaccinated before their employment can be terminated. Employers will be required to provide paid time off for workers to get vaccinated and will need to keep records about workers’ vaccination status. “The timing of this coming into force will depend on when we move to the Covid-19 protection framework,” Wood says. “We’re working with the CTU (Council of Trade Unions) and BusinessNZ to make sure we will have robust guidance for businesses ready well in advance.” Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown says once the vaccine targets are reached “it doesn’t make sense to require people to show proof of vaccination everywhere they go in New Zealand”. “National will allow people and businesses to decide when they can be used rather than imposing more restrictions on New Zealanders.”

nificant amounts has been poor quality or unrelated to Covid-19 such as the $710 million being spent so far on the Government’s
ideological Three Waters plans. The Government also needs to consider the impact its increased taxes is having on the cost of living. Auckland motorists should remember every time that they fill up their car, that this Government not only increased petrol taxes by 12c per litre in petrol excise since they came to office, but also gave Aucklanders the Auckland Regional Fuel Tax which amounts to 11.5c per litre. Without these taxes, the price of a litre of 91 would be much closer to $2.30. Still high, but not at the record prices we are currently experiencing. Whether it is higher taxes, or wasteful spending, the Government needs to urgently consider how its decisions are impacting on those who are working hard to support their families and must do everything it can to bring these cost-of-living pressures under control.

etrol prices have hit record highs in recent weeks putting additional pressure on families who are already facing rapid increases in the cost of living. The price of a litre of 91 is now around $2.58 and is adding to the most significant inflationary pressure we have seen in the economy since the 1980s, with inflation now at 4.9 per cent. Higher inflation means higher costs for families living in the Pakuranga Electorate who are trying to get by and pay their bills. This increased inflation will soon lead to higher interest rates and higher costs, meaning families are left working harder for less in their back pockets. Rebels busted over drugs, firearms and ammunition: Police P
olice have arrested and charged six people as part of a crackdown on a motorcycle gang with an east Auckland address among those targeted. Auckland City Police’s organised crime unit carried out search warrants on members of the Rebels MC gang on October 29. Detective Inspector Aaron Pascoe says ‘Operation Ryleigh’ began in July after tensions between the Rebels and King Cobra gangs saw a series of arsons carried out in Auckland earlier this year.
Police have since identified further alleged serious criminal offending, including possession and supply of methamphetamine and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. Six addresses including in East Tamaki and four suburbs across south Auckland were subject to search warrants on October 29. Police arrested and charged six males. A 34-year-old man is charged with participating in an organised criminal group and possession of methamphetamine for supply.
Five other males ranging in age from 25-39 years old are charged with participating in an organised criminal group. All six men were scheduled to appear in the Manukau District Court on October 29. Pascoe says police cannot rule out the possibility of more charges being laid. “In addition to the six arrested today, two 27-yearolds, who were already before the courts on related offending, will also be facing additional charges of participating in an organised criminal group.” Pascoe says another
Zhong’s alleged killer has been named The man charged with murdering east Auckland businesswoman Elizabeth (Ying) Zhong can now be named. He is 48-year-old Fang Sun. Sun has denied murdering Zhong and is scheduled to stand trial for the crime in April next year. Zhong, 55, was found dead inside her vehicle on November 28 last year. Her Land Rover had been parked in Roadley Avenue, Sunnyhills, a short distance from her three-storey Suzetta Place home. The last confirmed sighting of the businesswoman was at about 4.30pm on November 27. On February 12 this year Counties Manukau Police publicly announced the arrest of a man in relation to Zhong’s death.

All the gangs are interested in are the profits so
they can lead an outwardly lavish style. “They have no interest in the damage left behind by this drug they continue to peddle.” Pascoe says over the course of the investigation police have seized firearms, ammunition and methamphetamine.

male will face further additional charges relating to the alleged unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and supplying methamphetamine. A fourth male faces two further additional charges of supplying methamphetamine, offering to supply methamphetamine and supplying a cannabis plant. While the investigation into the series of arsons is ongoing, the arrests show the police’s commitment to stamp out criminal offending by organised crime groups, Pascoe says. “We will ensure they are held accountable for the
That man, now identified as Sun, appeared in the Manukau District Court the same day and was remanded in custody. Sun pleaded not guilty to murder during an appearance in the Auckland High Court in March and was granted name suppression, which has since been discontinued. A court charging document previously seen by the Times states police believe Sun killed Zhong in Sunnyhills between November 27 and November 28 last year. His occupation was not stated on the document. Police have described Zhong’s family as being “devastated” by her death. She was the director of the company Digital Post Limited, which is based in Epsom, central Auckland.

Let’s not mince words – it’s been a tough couple of months for east Auckland. But with the success of Super Sunday, we can begin to look ahead to a real Kiwi summer. A few weeks ago, the Government set out the new Covid-19 Protection Framework. This will help protect New Zealanders into the future, while providing a pathway out of lockdowns, offering certainty to businesses and giving vaccinated people more options. The framework will also allow businesses to fully open to vaccinated customers at green and orange and continue to operate with some restrictions at red. Businesses that choose to open to unvaccinated customers will face restrictions and, in some cases, won’t be able to open. We’re mandating vaccination for workers at businesses where customers need to show Covid-19 Vaccination Certificates to make those workplaces as safe as possible and give confidence to staff and customers. However, that all depends on our vaccination rates. Auckland will transition into this new framework once 90 per cent of eligible people in each of Auckland’s three DHBs are fully vaccinated, so if you haven’t already, it’s critical you get your first dose soon. To help our businesses make it through, we’ve also doubled the

Naisi Chen Resurgence Support Payment so that businesses can access up to $43,000 every fortnight. Last week the Government also announced the next steps for our Three Waters reform. Despite the rhetoric, Auckland Council’s own plan is to double your water bill to $2261 on average by 2031. In contrast, we decrease projected costs to just $800 per household and deliver you $1000 per year in savings! Part of this is because Auckland Council is near its debt capacity. Watercare remains constrained by Auckland Council’s balance sheet, limiting the ability to invest in this infrastructure. Plus as a bonus, the Government’s ‘better off’ package will also provide $507 million for Auckland Council to invest in community wellbeing. Opposing this policy is taking money out of your back pocket and saddling the next generation with avoidable debt. Instead of politicking, the opposition needs to look at the numbers and get on board with a policy that will save money and allow more investment in vital water infrastructure. Naisi Chen is a Labour List MP based in Botany

A relaxing 30 minute drive from east Auckland sits a new eatery offering a range of mouth-watering treats at affordable prices and surrounded by rolling farmland and bush. Hunua Falls Cafe and Bar opened its doors about a fortnight prior to the current Covid-19 lockdown. Manager Varun Gajani says the cafe’s customers come from far and wide and comprise a mix of locals and people visiting the famous scenic Hunua Falls. It serves a wide range of food and drink to suit all dietary requirements and tastes and including numerous popular beers on tap and delicious culinary delights. “We make pizzas, burgers, fish and chips, and steaks,” Varun says. “It is a pretty standard menu but it’s what the market here needs and what people in Hunua want.” There are also bar snacks available and a kids’ menu. Hungry diners in the mood for pizza should try the popular Chef’s Special tandoori chicken pizza, or the Garden pizza for vegetarians. There are also common pizza choices such as Pepperoni and Hawaiian. “Our pizzas are freshly made and we make our own bases,” Varun says. “It tastes much better when it’s fresh.” The prices are affordable and the cafe’s staff go

We make them feel comfortable and ensure they’re having the best time. “Our chefs prepare the food according to what the customer needs, no matter what allergies they may have. We want customers to have the best experience in our cafe.” The cafe is doing contactless sales during lockdown and is open from 12pm-7pm Wednesday to Sunday at present. “People are ordering takeaway food such as pizzas, burgers, and fish and chips,” Varun says. “We’ve been selling a lot of those during Covid. “For the first week of the ‘Red Light Rule’, all our customers with vaccination certificate/cards will get a free coffee and we have a combo offer of any doughnut with a large coffee for $8.” About 80 per cent of the cafe’s customers during the week are locals but on weekends it sees more people coming to the area to visit the falls. And the cafe’s food and drink is just as attractive as the area’s stunning scenery.

HISTORY
The Howick Coat of Arms T
he Howick Borough Council Coat of Arms was designed by Hilda Wiseman and was presented to the Howick Borough Council in October 1953, a year after the Council was established. The Howick Progressive Association, later called the Howick Residents and Ratepayers Association Inc, offered and advertised a New Zealand-wide competition with a prize of thirty pounds ($60). Miss EM Nixon had suggested that Howick should have a coat of arms when it became a Borough Council in 1952. She entered the competition but was not successful. The judges were the director of Auckland Art Gallery, the representative from the New Zealand Heraldic Authority, the mayor of Howick Borough and a representative from the Howick Progressive Association. One of the advertised rules was “that the judge’s decision was final”. Miss Nixon and another Howick resident objected strongly and made repeated complaints to Council. Miss Nixon wanted a realistic representation of the sailing ship “Minerva”, not a Phoenician vessel as an image of the immigrant ship. The images were similar to heraldic designs. Finally, in 1955, after long arguments, Hilda Wiseman’s design was accepted. The Borough

Council made enquiries at the College of Heraldry Arms in London, England, but the fees were considered an unnecessary expense for Howick ratepayers, so it was not formally approved. The Howick Borough Coat of Arms includes a scallop shell, the emblem of Saint James, the badge of pilgrims or immigrants from another country. All New Zealanders are immigrants or have forebear immigrants. The image of a well represents
the early settlers who had a well for their cottages as well as one for cattle or horses. The artillery cannon represents the military settlement of Howick. Howick Fencible pensioner-soldier-settlers never had cannons and the stockade saw no action and was an unnecessary political activity. The majority of Fencibles came from Ireland, escaping during the Irish Potato Famine. They were pensioners who had served for about 20 years in the British Army in India, China, Afghanistan
and other countries. The “Greek sailing ship” represents the “Minerva” and other Fencible ships that brought the immigrants from Britain between 1847 to 1852. The motto to “Serve with Goodwill” is based on the motto of the Third Earl Grey, formerly Lord Howick, Secretary of State and Colonies in the British Parliament. He was responsible for sending army pensioner Fencibles to Auckland. Howick is named after him. Many older Howick residents remember the Howick District
High School mantra “Service Before Self” above the main entrance to the school offices. This was ingrained into our minds with excellent results. Most local schools now have their own mantras and coats of arms. Miss Nixon was a generous benefactor for many Howick facilities and her museum and research into the Māori and European settlement enhanced our understanding of our history. She donated her property and buildings to the people of Howick when she died in 1962. The Howick Coat of Arms symbolises part of the history of Howick and is recognised with considerable pride on the Picton Street Bus shelter, on Howick Local Board letterheaded notices, at the Howick Information Centre, Howick Residents and Ratepayers Association notices and on many sports clubs’ uniforms and especially on our Howick Town Crier’s costume. COMMENT
Don’t just embrace the grey, embrace the humanity: CEO By BONNIE ROBINSON With lockdowns across the world and no one going anywhere much, media beauty pages have struggled for relevance. One topic they have been focusing on is the reality that for lockdown, mid-life women (and I guess a few men), the decision about whether and when to go grey has become a moot point. Headlines like ‘grey renaissance’, ‘embrace the grey’ and ‘XYZ (insert celebrity of choice) relishes their new grey look’ abound. Now you might think that, as CEO of an organisation that provides services to older people and promotes positive ageing, I’d welcome this focus on greying hair. Yes and no. While it’s great to see some grey hair in the media, you only have to read the first one or two paragraphs of most articles to see that this is generally not about embracing ageing – it’s just another way to let people, especially women, know, that looking older is not a good thing. Articles begin with the “embrace it” language but quickly move on to show how you can ensure your grey hair looks good so that it doesn’t ‘age you’. Personal stories often talk about how much older they looked once they went grey and what they did to overcome it. Sure, there are a few ‘I now feel amazing’ comments, but there would be at least two negative comments for one positive comment.
Getting older is a natural and normal part of human existence. We are lucky in Aotearoa New Zealand that we live in a society where most people have a Photo supplied chance to get older.
You might say, “it’s just an article about hair, trying to sell products, don’t worry about it.” But every time older people read something that tells them they have to look younger, the message is that they are not okay. And these articles also tell younger people that people who look older (whatever that means) are not okay. If you think I’m exaggerating, just think for a minute about the compliments we tend to give older people about their appearance. We often say things like “You look
great for your age,” “She doesn’t look her age,” or “You don’t look that old”. Meant in kindness, mostly, but the underlying message is ‘don’t look old’. These subtle undercurrents not only result in people feeling negative about getting older, but also in discrimination. Because if being older is not okay, then maybe I don’t want to socialise with you, employ you, or treat you like an equal human being who continues to have the same hopes, dreams, joys and sorrows as any human being of any age. Research has reported high rates of people over 55 experiencing ageism, especially in employment, but also in access to services and in how they get treated generally. Getting older is a natural and normal part of human existence. We are lucky in Aotearoa New Zealand that we live in a society where most people have a chance to get older. If this ‘grey renaissance’ is to be a good thing for older people, we need to not just embrace the grey but embrace humanity in all its diversity, which includes our age and how we look. So, next time you compliment an older person (grey-haired or not), compliment them on how wonderful they are, not how wonderful they look for their age. Let’s all do our bit to embrace ageing and celebrate this natural part of being human. Bonnie Robinson is the CEO of HBH Senior Living

RECYCLING
Free contactless e-waste drop-off events are here Auckland-based company Computer Recycling is hosting free contactless electronic waste drop-off days on Saturdays at their site based in Penrose. Computer Recycling says it is providing a safe and ethical way to dispose of e-waste for the public during alert level 3 dubbed “CR E-days”. The events were primarily run-in local communities around Auckland but due to the current restrictions in Auckland, the events will be held at the company’s site and be made free for members of the public. The events are staged to be contactless, with separate
bays to drop-off in to maintain social distancing, safeguarding staff and members of the public. The company has already run four successful events in October, generating more than 40,000kg of e-waste collected and helping more than 1400 households get rid of difficult-to-recycle items. Some of the most common e-waste items are computers, computer components, laptops, televisions, cell phones, printers, and fax machines. ➤ The next confirmed events for November will be held on Saturday November 6, 13, 20 and 27 at Computer Recycling, 5 Southpark Place, Penrose.

CHRISTMAS CAKE SALES UNDERWAY This month we have our Christmas Cake sales and, with many of our corporate customers who purchase bulk cakes shut down, we need help in selling our supply of cakes. The profit from these goes towards our support of local community projects including our Lions Eye Glass Fund which provides prescription glasses for young people through the Middlemore Kidz First hospital as well as many others. Please contact me if you would like some cakes – phone 027 245 4966.

HOMELESS POLICE
I think that the Howick Police should be encouraged to take over the Howick Information Centre along with the Howick

and Pakuranga Community Patrol group. It is clear that the Information Centre will no longer serve the community because the Auckland Council and Howick Local Board have given any attempts to get it going little-to-no support. That would put the police right on ‘main street’ and, thus, easily accessible to the public instead of being hidden down a back street. As for the security of their cars, there are already four car parks beside the old library building dedicated to ‘authorised vehicles’. It wouldn’t take much investment to build an extended and secure compound for the Police cars and for the Howick and Pakuranga Community Patrol cars.

GOOD TO HAVE TIMES BACK
When the lockdown came, the Times ceased to be delivered. Indeed, it ceased to be printed and we then understood how much we depended on it for our local and other news. Social events, special buys at retail level, yes it really was a lockdown. So, many thanks for bringing it back to life again. We know that it must have been a very demanding time for the owners, editor, journos, printers, delivery people, the list goes on. We will have missed some but thanks Times. Welcome back

REACH OUT CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED
‘GREENING’ OF THE PLANET CONTINUES
The Reach Out Campaign has been launched by Pakuranga Counselling Centre to reach out to those in need in our community during these difficult times. ➤ Impact The Covid-19 Pandemic is impacting our community mentally and is testing us beyond our normal limits. It is harder for those who were struggling before. Over the last 18 months, our highly trained counsellors have seen an increase in: • Anxiety and worries with finances and work security • Pressure on relationships • Home-schooling stresses • Young people not able to access their social networks. • Impact on mental health and ability to cope. ➤ How we can help • Counsellors, who can help with main counselling needs • Telehealth appointments – video or telephone • $75 for first session, $95 after. • Access to partially or free subsidised counselling ➤ How to access • Ask your GP about the Wellness Programme (if available), where you may be able to access up to 6 free counselling sessions • Self-referral – we will check to see if you are eligible for free counselling Appointment within 2 weeks, or sometimes sooner. ➤ Contact Call 576 4248 or 027 717 8715 Email reception@pakcc.org.nz
This is to address your correspondent’s note recently on the positive notion of the earth’s greening and other attributes that are actually contained in the latest IPCC report – but which are selectively not reported in the media. I have made no claims other than those noted in the IPCC report, a report which your correspondent presumably accepts. Your correspondent is right that the ‘greening’ effect of warming and associated longer growing season is not just related to food per se, and includes weeds and scrub. Of course, concomitant with this phenomenon we are fortunately witnessing substantial increases in crop productivity globally. The earth’s population has increased 145 per cent over the past 60 years. United Nations FAO records that over that same timeframe, while the average global temperature has increased by 0.60C, productivity of the dominant crops has increased substantially: Wheat 200% increase Maze 200% + increase Rice 150% increase Soya Bean 150% increase Interestingly, with warming climate crops are now being grown at higher altitudes and latitudes where previously poor germination and growth rates were uneconomic.
UN CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE HYPOCRISY It is hard to imagine anything more hypocritical than sending greenies and assorted politicians, supposedly champions of the environment and climate change, via 500 private planes and 747s from all corners of the globe to Glascow. The most eco-friendly system ever devised by man, video conferencing, is freely available and currently employed by climatechange conscience companies around the globe on a regular basis. To make matters worse, [it’s at] a time when all countries are in lockdown to prevent the spread of the Covid virus. As they sit in the 747s burning 4 litres of fossil fuels a second, to and from Glascow, one wonders if they have even a modicum of conscience or even the remotest idea of what hypocrisy – with regards to accelerating climate change – is all about.

ENVIRONMENT
New name and new pilot for coastal management plans A
uckland Council’s second Shoreline Adaptation Plan (SAP) pilot – which targets Beachlands and the eastern coast – has been launched with a focus on Auckland’s south-eastern coastline. Previously known as Coastal Management Plans, SAPs explore how Auckland Council-owned coastal land and assets can be adapted to manage the impacts of natural hazards, including erosion, coastal inundation, flooding, and climate change, while considering the needs and values of mana whenua and the local community. Recognising the environmental and landscape value of the shoreline, SAPs also work to promote the preservation and restoration of the coastal environment for future generations. Once completed, SAPs will provide site-specific adaptation strategies that will outline the preferred management response for each coastal area over the next 100 years. Together, all SAPs will help inform the sustainable management of council’s assets along the coast including the development
says Klinac. The “Beachlands and East” SAP will cover the shoreline area between Pine Harbour Marina and the Auckland Council boundary just south of Matingarahi near Orere Point.

of a regional prioritisation process for funding. This will ensure cost-effective management of new and existing structures and the development of a resilient future shoreline. Auckland Council’s general manager resilient land and coasts, Paul Klinac, says Auckland has more than 3200km of diverse coastline that is much-loved by
residents and visitors alike. “But the coast also presents a range of issues and hazards that we need to better understand and plan for. Issues like complex coastal processes and the impacts of coastal hazards, climate change, and the need to adapt are just some of the challenges we want to discuss further with mana whenua and our coastal communities,”
The pilot will run from lateOctober to mid-February 2022 and public engagement will take place both online and (alert level permitting) in person. In addition to the South-East pilot, the council has commenced the Te Waimanawa (Little Shoal Bay just over the Auckland Harbour Bridge) Shoreline Adaptation ‘Concept’ Plan. The plan will follow the established Shoreline Adaptation Plan technical and community engagement framework but will take high level adaptation strategies down to detailed options for implementation. As a concept plan, results will
be focused on the discrete area of Little Shoal Bay. However, to ensure a holistic approach, results will (at a later date) be aligned within the wider Kaipātiki Shoreline Adaptation Plan as an ‘area of interest’. Chair of the Environment and Climate Change Committee, Councillor Richard Hills, says it’s fantastic to see this crucial work ramping up across Auckland. “The two large pilot areas and one discrete concept plan will build a great foundation to build upon as we begin the complex yet important process of adapting our coast as we begin to see the impacts of climate change,”says Hills. “This work will also support mana whenua and local residents to help shape the future, armed with accurate data, while protecting our environment and prevent us making kneejerk decisions that can lead to poor outcomes for our coastal environments and waterways “This work will be funded regionally as part of the climate initiatives in our recently approved 10-year Budget.”

Heimgartner speedy in Sydney D
annemora’s Andre Heimgartner drove to a top 10 finish amidst some serious on-track action as Supercars returned for Round 8 of the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship. The Bunnings Trade Sydney SuperNight saw Heimgartner, who is Melbourne-based, battle hard throughout the event, the first of four weekends in a row at Sydney Motorsport Park where grip and tyre life are more critical than at any other circuit on the Supercars calendar. “Positive overall – it wasn’t amazing, it wasn’t a disaster but a good solid weekend overall,” said the Kelly Grove Racing driver. “Some good learnings to come from it, which was the main thing and we should be able to take a couple of steps forwards, which should be good in the coming rounds.” Races 20, 21 and 22 of the 2021 season saw three 32-lap races around the 3.93-kilometre Grand Prix, with the #7 Ned Racing Mustang coming home 14th, 9th and 13th respectively as choosing when to manage tyres and when to attack presented a serious chal-

lenge to the entire field. Qualifying for Race 20 saw Heimgarter just outside the top 10, with a tight midfield battle seeing the Ned Whisky Mustang line up 12th for Saturday evening’s night race. Heimgarter rolled out with a 1:29.2779 lap, which he set early on and saw him park the #7 Ned Racing Mustang in seventh place for the start of Race 21. “Nice to string it together” said Heimgartner in between two qualifying sessions. “We have extra tyres obviously from yesterday, so
we were able to take advantage of that. Good to be back. There have been a few rounds where we’ve been struggling, so good to have some consistency and a good car.” Race 21 saw Heimgarter rocket off his starting grid to be in an arm wrestle with pole sitter Anton DePasquale, who’d slid back after a poor start. Pitting from fifth place on lap 18, the Ned Racing Mustang rejoined in 15th position and began a charge on fresh rubber to be 12th one lap later. With all pit stops complete, Heimgartner
had pushed back into the top 10, passing Will Brown on lap 24 to come home in ninth place, before a post-race disqualification of Anton DePasquale elevated the #7 Ned Racing Mustang into eighth. Race 22 saw Heimgartner start 14th and drive superbly to maintain the result as the field struggled with limited tyres. An intense opening set of laps saw Heimgarter rise to 11th place at the end of the first lap, driving around the outside of a stoush unscathed at the hairpin that saw Todd Hazelwood
pit with damage. “It was cool – a lot of action going on, a lot of biff and barging everywhere, so it was pretty cool to be involved,” said Heimgartner. “I just love racing and especially when you come out on the right side, it’s even more enjoyable.” The #7 Ned Racing Mustang crossed the line three-wide into the third lap, as the tussles continued, Heimgartner seventh on the road when he made his compulsory pit stop on Lap 12. Back in 16th, Heimgartner pushed hard, overtaking Kelly Grove Racing team mate Reynolds for 12th place along the way on Lap 15. With all compulsory pit stops completed, Heimgarter had made his way to an excellent 10th place, before fresher-tyred rivals including Cam Waters and Jack Le Brocq saw Heimgarter finish one-spot better than his starting position in 13th. The #7 Ned Racing Mustang will race this coming weekend, November 6-7, for Round 9 of the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship, The Armor All Sydney SuperNight, at Sydney Motorsport Park.
